A looming crisis in rural women’s mental and social health and gaps in care is being highlighted by the co-ordinator of a 6000 strong social media group for rural farming mothers.

Farming Mums NZ Facebook facilitator Chanelle O’Sullivan said while there had been a “much-needed” emphasis on men struggling with depression, she believed rural women had been forgotten.

Mrs O’Sullivan has been dealing with the stress women have been enduring since the downturn first-hand on the private section of the page where significant problems were being highlighted

on a regular basis. “Just this morning I had a woman whose husband had been hearing voices and was under the care of a psychiatric team and she wasn’t sure who she could turn to. The fact that she had to come to an online forum to get help shows there should be more support.”

While women might not commit suicide in the same numbers as men, Mrs O’Sullivan said many were still struggling, miserable, isolated and unhappy.

Mrs O’Sullivan was discussing hiring a counsellor full-time because the need was so great, but was uncertain how to fund the service.

While Rural Support Trusts offered professional support for adverse events

and other organisations like the Rural Health Alliance and Rural Women New Zealand had some services available, many of the women on the Facebook page did not perceive they were helpful to their situation and were using the forum to communicate and seek advice.

“People don’t realise how dire the situation is and how many people are on edge.”

Dairy Women’s Network Chief Executive Officer Zelda de Villiers said the dairy industry was “often focused” on men’s wellbeing.

Move fast approaching

Health crisis looms

In just a few days Community House’s new premises will be brimming with tenants.

The renovation of Community House Mid Canterbury’s Cass Street premises, once home to Work and Income New Zealand, is now just a week away.

Early last year the Community House Mid Canterbury Trust raised the last of the money needed to buy the building and now the refurbishment work is complete, the designated move in date is creeping closer.

Trust board chairman John Driscoll said work was tracking well with only a few technical issues to sort out.

The move in process will begin on Friday and Community House will be closed for a short period with the first official trading day set down for March 14.

“Everything has come together nicely,” he said. “Virtually the inside is finished. There is just little bits getting done.”

Externally, all that is left is the last of the painting.

The building will be blessed on the first day of business but the

official opening will take place in April, Mr Driscoll said.

By that time the building’s primary feature – a memorial to the victims of the Winz tragedy – will be finished.

Late last year Mr Driscoll called for donations for the memorial and the community rallied in support.

Individuals as well as community groups, gardening groups, service clubs and local firms had all come to the party, he said.

The anchor tenant for the rental is Safer Ashburton but already 19 other tenants have signed on,

both permanent and temporary.

Safer Ashburton manager Kevin Clifford said his team would be moving in from March 14 and have set aside a week to get everything back up and running.

Safer Ashburton will be closed over this period but will be back in action, operating from their new home as of March 21.

“It will be a fantastic environment that will allow many organisations to work collectively which can only result in better outcomes for all our clients and the community,” Mr Clifford said.

Hunting for treasure at antiques show By ruBy Harfield

The Ashburton Rotary Club raised more than $3700 for the community from their annual Antique and Collectables show on Saturday.

More than 600 people attended the show, which was held at the Sports Hall on Tancred Street.

Organiser Sharyn Amos said all the money raised would go back into the community.

“It’s a good Rotary project.”

The crowd was slightly down from previous years but the ones who went enjoyed the bargain hunting and displays.

There were more than 50 stallholders from as far away as Nelson and Dunedin and 15 more people who created displays for the event.

“The stallholders were happy with how it went.”

The event would not have been able to be held without the help of Barry and Adrienne Stephen and their involvement with the Christchurch Antique Bottle and Collectables Club, she said.

Ms de Villiers said women often held their families and communities together and they should not be forgotten about.

Stress levels had definitely risen in the face of the downturn with the mindset of women particularly changing after the last pay-out announcement.

The network relies on volunteers to run event days where women can get together and share their stories but this was proving difficult in the current climate as more women worked off farm or for longer periods on farm to alleviate financial stress.

She said the network could look into helping the situation if it had funding to do so.

“But we are a very small nonprofit group reliant on funding.

In tough times our funding goes down. It’s not just about knowing what needs to be done, but having the funding to do it.”

Rural Women New Zealand president Wendy McGowan said the federation was aware of the issue but didn’t have any specific initiatives to meet the needs of women who were struggling.

Having suffered similar conditions as a rural wife during the 1980s downturn, Mrs McGowan understood the consequences of the current situation.

“We do have to look at what we can do . . . we need to look at who is looking after the carer.”

Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand acting CEO Hugh Norriss said while it’s acknowledged that rural women had traditionally stronger social networks than males, there came a point where they were going to need extra help as well.

“It sounds like there could be room for a programme that gets women involved as well.”

Plenty of interest in businesses

There might still be two weeks left before potential purchasers for a large slice of the Ashburton Trust’s business empire is found, but that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been plenty of buyer interest, says business investment consultant, Philip Cooper.

“We’ve had a lot of inquiry considering there is still quite a long way to go. It’s a normal sales process, but perhaps better than normal because we have three businesses in the mix,” he said.

The Ashburton Trust is selling three businesses – Somerset Grocer, Speights Alehouse and the Tinwald Tavern and Motels complex.

It plans to put the Hotel Ashburton on the market in April.

The businesses are being sold by deadline private treaty (unless sold prior). Achieving an early sale, however, is most unlikely, Mr Cooper said.

“For us to be interested in taking an offer prior to the closing date it would have to be an un-

conditional offer and for a very significant amount.”

Interest had been expressed across all businesses and prospective buyers have viewed the Tinwald complex.

“We’ve also got pre-inquiry interest in the Hotel Ashburton although it’s not on the market yet,” Mr Cooper said.

Parties expressing an interest in both the alehouse and the café had not yet viewed these but appeared to be familiar with the businesses, he said.

Regardless of the level of interest in any business, no sale was guaranteed until all the offers were on the table, Mr Cooper said.

“We’ll just have to see how it pans out at the end, the trust is certainly not having a fire sale.”

The trust decided to divest itself of its business interests but to remain as a landlord, believing that this will generate better returns for the community from its community owned assets.

Deadline sale for the three businesses is March 22.

Weekend to pamper mums

Ten Mid Canterbury mothers were treated to a weekend of pampering thanks to Altrusa’s biennial event, Magic Mums.

The event has been running every two years since 2000 to give something back to mothers who are parenting in difficult situations, for example having a child with a disability.

Organising committee member Alison Quinn said the women were nominated last year and spent the weekend doing different activities.

They had facials and manicures, went for a flight around the district, went go-carting, made jewellery, tried their hand at archery and stayed the night in Pudding Hill. “The weekend went really well.”

It was originally started after an Altrusa member visited her daughter in Australia who had a child with disabilities and realised how difficult and time-consuming it was.

“She couldn’t believe the demand on the mother.”

Altrusa holds the event every two years and feels honoured to be able to give mothers a weekend away, she said.

New Zealand Chiropractors’ Association vice-president Dr Hayden Thomas is aware of users

of bamboo pillows who have experienced problems.

“What we’ve found with the bamboo pillows specifically is that some people find it sometimes forces their spine into a position

they’re not quite ready for, and that can aggravate symptoms with neck pain and stiffness and sometimes headaches.”

He also said people should continue to use them if they feel they

work for them. “On the other side of that I’ve had some people who it’s been really good for. It’s like any kind of device or support, some people it suits and some people it doesn’t.”

Women from all over Ashburton were treated to an “inspirational” breakfast to celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday.

International Women’s Day is actually tomorrow but was celebrated a few days early by Zonta Ashburton during their annual breakfast at the Hotel Ashburton.

Organiser Viv Williams said guest speaker Billie Jordan, founder of The Hip Operation Crew, was entertaining and extremely thought-provoking.

“She gave us all goals to go out and make the best funeral stories ever.

“Ageing shouldn’t be a slowing down process. We should be pushing the boundaries when we’re physically able.”

Ms Jordan was the first guest speaker in the breakfast’s 20-year history to receive a standing ovation.

Mid Canterbury has an abundance of good quality teacher aides.

Teacher aides in New Zealand are hired to help out teachers in a classroom usually on a oneto-one basis with children who have special learning needs.

In Mid Canterbury, and nationally, schools have had a shortage of science, maths and technology teachers as well as relief teachers but this is not the same for teacher aides.

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said his school has 10 teacher aides who usually stay within the school rather than moving with specific students.

“We try to put kids with a number of teacher aides.”

There is no shortage of teacher aides in Mid Canterbury and

Firefighters from Lauriston Rural Fire Force, Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade and Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade spent three hours battling a 650m2 blaze on Orrs Road, Lauriston, which started at 1.02pm yesterday. Ashburton District Council rural fire officer Charlie Tomlin said the fire was caused by a spark from a log splitter but did not cause too much damage.

Bodies recovered Two bodies have been recovered off Great Barrier Island following a diving accident. Police said the men were thought to be aged 31 and 55. They were a part of a group of five when the accident happened yesterday.

The three other men were still on Great Barrier Island, police said. The bodies have not been formally identified, but authorities have notified next of kin. “Our sympathies are with the families at this tragic time,’’ police said. - NZH people to tears.

Schools say no shortage of teacher aides

Carew Peel Forest School principal Kay Ward said while they only had two teacher aides, and one who works on a very part time basis, this was enough for them.

They had always had a lot of good quality applicants for any vacancies in the past, she said.

This is the same for St Joseph’s School which has three, acting principal Cath Blacklow said.

Dorie School principal Antony Dorreen said they have two teacher aides with one just starting this year.

Former Dorie School student Olivia Stewart started as Dorie School’s new teacher aide at the beginning of Term 1 this year.

Miss Stewart said she finished her schooling at Ashburton College last year and chose this year to take a gap year to decide what she wanted to study.

She was pleased to be offered the job because she had considered studying teaching and this was a good opportunity to experience a school environment.

It also meant she could spend time in her former school again and give something back to it.

The 17-year-old said she had been really enjoying the job so far, each day is different.

She likes being able to support and teachers and she loves the kids.

“It’s lots of fun.”

The school has changed a bit since she started 13 years ago, with more students, building changes and completely new teachers.

A three-year-old boy has died after a log fell on him in Timaru yesterday afternoon. The boy died at a business address in Washdyke after a log rolled onto him about 3pm. A police spokeswoman said police and Worksafe are conducting an investigation into the incident.

Companionship is sustained through happy hours and pot luck meals in the lodge or entertaining in our own home making Lochlea an independent, safe and very happy place to live.

David & Nikki Copland: Barbara’s (Mrs C’s) time at Lochlea was short but in that time she embraced life, took part in, and did so much more than she would have had she stayed at her house on Beach Road.

Mrs C’s last surviving months were fulfilled and she loved her new life. The care and support given to Mrs C from Tony, Sue and the residents at Lochlea was outstanding. The only regret we could have was that Mrs C didn’t get to enjoy her villa longer.

Stuart Lovett & Family: Stuart & Nola moved into their villa in January 2014. They made new friends while still enjoying visits from family and friends outside the Resort. They were made to feel welcome and any requests or concerns were addressed promptly by Tony. They enjoyed many Friday get togethers and happy hours at the Lodge. Being able to live independently and knowing our parents were safe is a big plus. When Nola’s health deteriorated the ongoing support from staff and residents was much appreciated and a special service was held in the Lochlea Chapel for residents who were unable to attend Nola’s funeral. Stuart is adjusting to life on his own now. He goes to the gym every morning with his mates and plays petanque regularly each week. He has enjoyed organised trips in the van which is also available to take him to the supermarket now that he is unable to drive. The facilities and gardens are a credit to all and being able to use the Lodge to celebrate Stuart’s birthday was appreciated. Stuart feels very fortunate to be able to be part of the friendly, caring community at “Lochlea”.

Minister orders balcony collapse probe Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith has ordered an investigation into the collapse of a balcony during a Six60 concert which injured 18 university students.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has been asked to prepare a report on the incident at the Castle Street townhouse on

Friday night which will look at whether the balcony was up to the standards required by law under the Building Code.

“Structural failure of buildings are rare in New Zealand but every incident of this sort needs to be thoroughly investigated to establish whether there were failings and whether our building systems are working as they

should,” he said.

“The investigation needs to look into whether the design, construction and maintenance of the balcony was up to the required standard, and to establish why it collapsed.”

Dr Smith said it may have been possible that the balcony did meet standards but that the loading from the large number

of students on it was in excess of what the Building Code required.

“I am open to all possibilities but want to ensure we do everything possible to avoid these sorts of building accidents.”

A preliminary report on the balcony collapse is expected to be complete by the end of this month.

More than 25,000 people turned up for the 44th annual Ports of Auckland Round the Bays, which runs 8.4km from the CBD to St Heliers. The fastest man across the line was five-time winner Jonathan Jackson with a time of 26 minutes, and the fastest female finisher was Olivia Burne in 28 minutes. Lee Warn was the fastest wheelchair athlete, finishing the course in 36 minutes dressed in a panda suit.

Gashed by prop A man has suffered a nasty gash from a boat propeller after falling out of a vessel at Muriwai Beach yesterday. The man, in his 20s, had taken out a mini thundercat inflatable vessel with two others when the accident happened about 1.45pm. A spokesman for the Muriwai Volunteer Lifeguard Service said the victim had suffered “quite a deep cut” from his upper thigh to his abdomen.

“They were taking a small inflatable out and they managed to flip it. [The cut] was deep and it was large. It cut through the abdominal.” The spokesman said the vessel did not have a prop guard – which could have prevented the accident.

Straw builders test out new skills

More than 200 people from all over the world have been learning about straw building in Methven during an international conference.

New Zealand is hosting the International Straw Building Conference for the first time; the event started last Thursday

and ends on Wednesday at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall.

One of the organisers, Sarah Johnston, who built a straw-bale house in Geraldine, said she has been pleased with the event so far.

“It’s going really, really well.”

People have been able to listen to speakers, presentations and attend workshops.

An open day was held yesterday and on Wednesday people will be able to take tours to straw houses around Canterbury.

Delegates from all over the world including the United States, South America, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom as well as many from New Zealand have been able to share their expertise, she said.

The aim of the conference is to get more people involved in the straw building world.

Methven was chosen for the four-yearly conference due to it being the heart of the graingrowing region, having great facilities and accommodation, Mrs Johnston said.

The conference have a fun straw-bale Olympics on Tuesday.

Runner shares porn addiction Olympian Nick Willis says he has no regrets over breaking his silence about his pornography addiction.

Willis took to Facebook yesterday to react to the publicity around his revelation.

“I guess I never realised how much interest the media would have in my Facebook post, but I want to affirm that breaking the silence is worth it if even only one person succeeds in winning his/her battle,” he said.

Friends and family commented, commending him on his admission.

One person wrote; “Good on you ... takes a lot of courage. Doesn’t change my view on you. Go hard and keep chasing your dreams.”

Another person wrote; “Very brave and I’m sure it will make an impact in more than one life”.

The Herald can reveal that the search began late on Wayne Drive on Friday night. It is understood a resident was taken away from the house by police on Friday night and officers arrived soon after.

A resident on the street told the Herald that the owner of the house was in Gisborne and her son had been living there. She believed they were a Thai family. She said the house has been under police guard for most of the weekend and officers are stopping all cars that approach the address.

However, police will not say why they are at the house.

Stressed out rural mums need help too Ruby Harfield

s it time to help our rural mums? We have lots of them out there and they sure do a lot of work behind the scenes of every farm.

A 6000-strong Facebook page has recently highlighted the dire situation of a large proportion of the rural community who are essentially being forgotten about.

The Farming Mums NZ page was created for farming mums to share their experiences, questions and thoughts to help each other and facilitator Chanelle O’Sullivan has been dealing with women who have had to endure terrible situations following the dairy downturn.

Just recently she was talking to one mum dealing with an overstressed husband who is under the care of a psychiatric team.

There has been emphasis aimed at rural men struggling with depression and while this is much-needed, why are our women not getting the same support?

There are different organisations such as Rural Support Trusts, the Rural Health Alliance and Rural Women New Zealand who are able to offer some services but many women do not feel they are able to offer the support they need.

In the past men have been targeted to be helped because they often find it more difficult to talk about worries as well as having less social networks.

But women still need all the help they can get. Being stressed, lonely and isolated on a farm is not healthy.

Our district relies on agriculture. We rely on our farms and we rely on both the men and women who keep them going.

Rural organisations all over the country including Rural Women New Zealand, Dairy Women’s Network and the Mental Health Foundation have recognised a need to help our farming women.

Let’s hope that they take heed of this and put their money where their mouth is.

However, instead of just relying on others to help out, why can’t we band together and look after the women in our district who need help?

e all know when kids are healthy and active they are better equipped to succeed at school.

That’s why the Government has a number of initiatives in place to help our children get the best possible start in life. Around 780,000 children aged under 13 are benefitting from free GP visits and prescriptions thanks to the $90 million invested over three years in the 2014 Budget.

Latest figures show the rate of children under 13 visiting their GP is 23 per cent higher when compared to the same quarter last year. So far 99 per cent of GPs around New Zealand are offering free GP visits for under 13s.

Results have been particularly good for Maori and Pacific children. There was a 25 per cent increase in the number of Maori, and a 21 per cent increase in the number of Pacific children being seen by their GP. With more children starting school for the first time this year, we’re already on track to exceed last year’s number of B4 School Checks carried out. In 2014/15 the programme reached a record 92 per cent.

This figure represents over 58,000 pre-schoolers across the country – the highest rate since the programme began back in 2008.

It has been particularly encouraging to see an increase for Maori and Pacific four-year-olds, with 87 per cent of Maori children and 88 per cent of Pacific children getting their B4 School Check last year.

The B4 School Check includes hearing, eyesight, height, weight, and oral health assessments, as well as comprehensive health and development questionnaires. Checks are provided free through a range of community health services.

On July 1 this year a new childhood obesity health target will come into force. Under the target, 95 per cent of children identified as obese in the B4 School Check will be referred to a health professional for assessment and

For children who have lost their parents, or are unable to live with them, there are special grants available for caregivers to help cover uniforms, stationery,

and other back to school costs.

Across New Zealand there are 13,500 children being looked after by family carers due to relationship breakdowns or the death of a parent or parents.

Through the School and Year Start Up Payments the Government helps to ensure that children being looked after by family carers are provided with the tools they need to make the most of their education.

Police fire tear gas Turkish police have fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters outside the country’s biggest newspaper after authorities seized control of it in a crackdown on a religious group whose leader the government accuses of treason.

A court on Friday appointed an administrator to run the flagship Zaman, English-language Today’s Zaman and Cihan agency, linked to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who President Tayyip Erdogan says was plotting a coup.

Rights groups and European officials condemned the takeover, seeing it as proof that Turkey’s government silences dissident views.

Other media outlets affiliated with Gulen’s movement were taken over in October, and companies including a bank have been seized, wiping out billions of dollars in valuations.

“Turkey has the right to question those who take part in a clear coup attempt, whether economic or journalistic, against an elected government,” Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said while on a trip to Tehran.

Erdogan has repeatedly pledged to crush Gulen’s conservative religious movement, which he said has infiltrated the police,

Fossilised Call to speed up migrant efforts lizard reptile ‘missing link’ A fossilised lizard found in Southeast Asia preserved in amber dates back some 99 million years, Florida scientists have determined, making it the oldest specimen of its kind and a “missing link” for reptile researchers.

The lizard is some 75 million years older than the previous record holder, according to researchers at the Florida Museum of Natural History, who announced the finding this week.

It was found decades ago in a mine along with other ancient, well-preserved reptile fossils, but the US scientists were able to analyse the finds only recently.

“It was incredibly exciting to see these animals for the first time,” Edward Stanley, a member of the research team, said yesterday.

Scientists believe the chameleon-like creature was an infant when it was trapped in a gush of sticky resin while darting through a tropical forest in what is now Myanmar, in Southeast Asia.

The creature’s entire body, including its eyes and colourful scales, is unusually well-preserved, Stanley said.

The other reptiles trapped in the amber, including a gecko and an arctic lizard, were also largely intact.

Small reptiles have delicate bodies and typically deteriorate quickly, he said.

Being encased in solid amber helped to lock the specimen together.

Greece needs to deliver quickly on its promise to provide accommodation for 50,000 refugees and the European Union should help Athens with this task, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said.

Austria, one of the last stepping stones to Germany for hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants, recently imposed border restrictions, setting off a domino effect in Europe and leaving tens of thousands stranded in poor conditions in Greece.

“Originally, Greece should have created 50,000 accommodation places for refugees by the end of 2015,” Merkel told German tabloid Bild am Sonntag in an interview.

“The backlog must be resolved now at lightning speed because the Greek govern-

ment has to guarantee decent accommodation.”

Merkel, under pressure to reduce the number of new arrivals after more than one million migrants entered Germany last year, said Greece could count on more help from other EU states.

“I know from my talks with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras that he wants to do this, but that he needs our help, and that’s why the EU must and will support Greece in solidarity.”

She also said that Austria and Balkan countries were largely to blame for the changed situation in Greece by deciding unilaterally to impose borders controls.

Cruz beats Trump in Kansas US Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz has won a nominating contest in Kansas and was leading in Maine, denting frontrunner Donald Trump’s momentum and bolstering Cruz’s case that he is the best alternative for those bent on stopping Trump.

Kansas was one of five states holding nominating contests at the weekend, and Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton were looking to strengthen their leads in the battle to pick Donald nominees for the November 8 presidential election to succeed President Barack Obama.

Republicans in Louisiana, Kentucky and Maine also were voting yesterday.

Cruz led in very early results in Maine; results in the other states were expected later.

Cruz, a US senator from Texas who has promoted himself to voters as a true conserva-

tive, in contrast to Trump, also won a non-binding “straw poll” of activists at the Conservative Political Action Conference near Washington, DC. “What we saw in Kansas is a manifestation of a real shift in momentum,” Cruz said in Idaho. Trump has a substantial lead in the delegates needed to secure the nomination at the Republican National Convention, but has come under a barrage of blistering attacks from his party’s establishTrump ment.

The four Republican contests at the weekend together account for just 155 delegates.

Mission statement on culinary cool

Like cheese accompanied by complementary beers? Then San Francisco’s Mission Cheese is where to head to.

I

n San Francisco, where eating badly is difficult, the Mission District is enjoying its moment at the city’s summit of culinary cool.

To get a flavour of San Francisco’s oldest neighbourhood with its distinctly Latino roots, I’m in the hands of Corinne from Avital Tours who is guiding our group through a four-course progressive dinner – two appetisers, one entree and dessert – while detailing the district’s history and gastronomic evolution.

First stop is Mission Cheese on Valencia Street and like the influx of techies now muscling into the area, this cosy cheese cave is keen on some innovation of its own: matching American artisan cheese with US craft beers.

Over several tasting flights, our tastebuds are pushed out of their usual comfort zones thanks to host Alex’s selection of cheeses from Colorado and Indiana.

A standout is the salty/nuttiness of Queso de Mano from Canon City’s Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy enhanced by the floral, Belgian-style pale ale of Lost Abbey, San Diego.

It’s also hard to dislike a place where a bag at the door makes a cheese pun out of a David Bowie song: “Ground control to major

As we walk to the next stop we’re told about many of the Mission’s 600 vibrant murals. They detail the area’s social and political struggles and act as an arresting outdoor canvas as we graze and imbibe.

Corinne also explains how the Mission became San Francisco’s edgy eating epicentre thanks to an Italian restaurant and a much praised pastry paradise.

“Delfina Italian restaurant opened (in 1998) and it’s still considered one of San Francisco’s best Italian restaurants ... and then in 2002 Tartine Bakery opened up on the same corner, so that block become this powerhouse of food ... and that’s when the area started to become affectionately known as San Francisco’s gourmet ghetto.

“The area has blossomed into so much more of a cornucopia of restaurants since then.”

No visit to the Mission would be complete without a taste of Mexican and so we head to Gra-

cias Madre on Mission Street.

Carnivores be warned, this is Mexican you may struggle to recognise: a vegan Mexican restaurant. Like so many of the area’s eateries it seriously challenges traditional ideas.

For example, Gracias Madre serves up a Quesadillas de Calabaza stuffed with caramelised onion and butternut squash seasoned with cayenne pepper and topped with vegan nacho cheese which is more runny and fluid than normal. If nothing else I admire the venture’s commitment to veganism and organics.

In contrast we arrive at Taqueria La Cumbre, a local institution, which is credited as creating the Mission-style or San Francisco burrito in 1972. How does this burrito differ? Largely via a combination of size, extra rice, the freshest ingredients and steaming the wheat flour to increase the tortilla’s flexibility.

this established taqueria which next year notches up 50 years.

Part of the appeal must be Ed’s entertaining delivery which is equal parts quiz master, talk show host and raconteur as he barely pauses for breath to peel off facts and fire questions at our group.

and fennel pollen, champagne fizz, Amaretto and porter beer.

I try the whisky neat with dark chocolate, a gloriously indulgent pleasure.

As if that’s not enough we’re offered a pick of the gourmet gelato popsicles, selecting from flavours like Valrhona chocolate, Mexican hot chocolate, coffee and biscotti and even French toast.

Sated and satisfied we finish our eating odyssey and are left to drift off into the San Francisco night on a sweet, sweet high.

Swimmers off to Splash Palace

Five Jennian Homes Ashburton swimmers will be Invercargillbound tomorrow to compete at the Division II competition at Splash Palace.

Sixteen-year-old Katelyn Hogg, 15-year-old Andrew Peel, 14-yearold Jared Scammell and 13-yearolds Courtney Elliott and Isabelle Wilson will travel the six-hour journey by van before competing over eight sessions in four days.

Hogg is the only swimmer of the local contingent to have competed at the Division II meet before, winning three medals in butterfly last year, and will be hoping to produce another fine performance this week.

The Division II competitors will be gunning to make qualifying times for the elite competition of National Age Groups in Wellington in April.

The competition will end on Saturday.

Podium eludes gold medal star Webster Hopes of a second visit to the podium at the world track cycling championships for Sam Webster were dashed in London yesterday.

Already a gold medallist from his team sprint performance, alongside Eddie Dawkins and Ethan Mitchell, Aucklander Webster was hoping to back that with a strong result in the individual

sprint. However he had to settle for seventh after losing his bestof-three quarter-final against Britain’s outstanding Jason Kenny, the rider Webster beat to win the Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow two years ago.

Kenny, a triple Olympic gold medallist, was in fine form, winning the matchup in two straight rides.

Webster finished third in the ride-off for fifth to eighth behind winner Fabian Puerta Zapata of Colombia, a world championship medallist, and nine-time world champion Gregory Bauge of France.

However, Natasha Hansen remains alive in the women’s sprint, having produced her best international performance.

Eliza McCartney stole the limelight on day two of the Lion Foundation New Zealand Track and Field championships in Dunedin on Saturday, setting a New Zealand record of 4.80m in the pole vault.

The clearance in the Bluebridge Ferries sponsored event bettered the national, resident, allcomers and under 20 records as well as the Oceania record and takes the Auckland 19-year-old to the top of the world outdoor rankings for 2016, although four athletes have vaulted higher indoors this year.

McCartney is now forcing herself into the early reckoning for medals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games if she can continue her recent improvements. But before Rio, the Halberg Emerging talent award winner will contest the World Indoor Championships in under two weeks in the US city of Portland, Oregon.

The best track race of the day was the women’s 100m hurdles which turned into a titanic battle between 100m champion Rochelle Coster and previous hurdles champion Fiona Morrison.

Coster started well but Morrison finished faster to take the title by just 0.02.

Josh Hawkins repeated his Otago Polytechnic 110m hurdles title win from last season in 14.25.

The middle distance 800m titles had a symmetry about them with training partners Brad Mathas and Angie Petty, both coached

by Maria Hassan and both taking their fifth consecutive titles.

Petty ran from the front all the way to win in a season’s best of 2:02.08 while Mathas faced more of a challenge before winning in 1:50.47.

Andrew Whyte won back his men’s title in 46.70 while women’s champion Louise Jones collected her fifth title with 54.05, both in dominant displays.

Omnium rider Aaron Gate was 17th in the 1000m time trial, 16th in the flying lap and 19th in the points race to finish 19th overall in the six-discipline event.

In brief Sevens crash out The All Blacks Sevens will be anxious to erase yesterday in Las Vegas from the memory banks after they crashed out of Cup contention and lost Sonny Bill Williams from next weekend’s tournament in Vancouver. So slick on day one, New Zealand scored only one try in two games in one of their darkest days on the circuit. Kenya whitewashed them 22-0 in their final pool match, one of the flattest New Zealand displays in many moons.

There was a clear improvement and more commitment in the quarter-final against South Africa, but there were still far too many errors. Tim Mikkelson’s men could not consistently threaten the line and were beaten 14-7.

Timaru Celtic 27-13 in their opening tie to progress to the tournament’s final, but narrowly lost out to Nelson Marist 29-25.

Meanwhile, Ashburton Celtic’s B team fell to two defeats, 45-0 to Marist Albion B and 35-5 against Wests Hokitika.

Lauriston, Coldstream to clash

Coldstream and Lauriston will contest this year’s Muirhead Rosebowl final after winning their respective semi-finals on Saturday.

Coldstream took a six-wicket win over Allenton while Lauriston downed Methven by eight wickets.

Saturday’s win marked a dramatic turnaround for Coldstream following an inconsistent Pritchard Shield campaign, in which they finished in fourth place on the ladder.

Coldstream won the toss and elected to field on Saturday, which proved a good decision.

Allenton’s openers Josh Worsfold and skipper Jeff Naish got off to an unconvincing start.

Worsfold (1) could only muster a solitary run before being run out by Deon Biggs while Naish posted six and was also dismissed by Biggs.

Jordan Bird (23) and Lyall Jemmett (63) set about steadying the ship with the latter in fine form.

The middlemen also delivered

The Chiefs departed yesterday for South Africa for the first leg of their two-week international tour without Brodie Retallick after he broke his ribs yesterday against the Lions at Waikato Stadium.

Retallick suffered the rib injury early in the second half and will be out for about 4-6 weeks. The Chiefs play the Southern Kings at Port Elizabeth next Saturday on March 12 and then fly to Argentina to take on the Jaguares in Buenos Aires on March 19.

Jono recorded 67 not out, but Richard picked up the much-deserved man of the match award after firing 92 off 62 balls, including nine fours and six sixes to chase down the target in the 36th

Allenton will take some solace from the rapid development of young spinner Scott Punselie, who took three for 26 of his nine overs.

In the opposite semi-final, Lauriston kept their hunt for silverware alive with a dominant performance at the Methven Domain.

The home side chose to bat after winning the toss and were all out in the 42nd over for 165 runs.

Dave Maw (33) and Mitchell Sim (27) got Methven off to a solid start before Englishman Sam Medhurst recorded 25, but there was little more of note.

Ryan Cockburn had a good day with the ball, taking three for 23 off eight overs, while Mid Canterbury skipper Bevan Ravenscroft returned from injury to take three for 40 off his six overs. Lauriston were two down when they surpassed Methven’s total with fine knocks from Bevan Richan (71) and Nick Gilbert (51).

Lauriston and Coldstream will lock horns in the Rosebowl final on Saturday at 12.30pm.

The pressure on Queensland Super Rugby coach Richard Graham has intensified after a disastrous 22-3 defeat to the Western Force at Suncorp Stadium. It continued an abysmal start to the season by the inexperienced Reds, who again failed to fire a real shot in attack and showed little to suggest they weren’t in for a long, tough year ahead. The Force held a small lead for most of Saturday night’s match but broke away late, and sealed the win through the game’s sole try from winger Luke Morahan on the fulltime siren.

Dangers of rugby A baffling new format and the addition of two hapless new teams is the least of Super Rugby’s worries. What’s becoming a much bigger danger to the game is an increasingly vocal lobby that believes the sport has become too extreme - and that children who play the game are almost certainly running an unjustifiably high risk of being injured and that the sport is too big a financial burden on public health systems. More than 70 doctors and other health professionals in the UK have written an open letter to the Government urging them to ban tackling in schoolboy rugby.

Final replay a thriller

By GreGor Paul The Hurricanes and Highlanders just don’t do boring.

It was as if last year’s final never ended as they hammered away at each other for 80 minutes in a game that was a bit loose at times but always compelling.

Just like the last time they met, it was the Highlanders who were just that bit more clinical and composed in those critical moments.

Games between these two rarely move beyond a sevenpoint margin so it was always going to come down to taking the chances when they came.

Jason Woodward’s crazy decision to kick - direct into touch as it happened - when the Hurricanes had a last chance, illustrated the difference between the two teams.

When it is a thriller - calm heads win the day.

And it was a thriller.

The pace was predictably frenetic.

The ball was dry, the ground was firm and the crowd were there to be entertained so it all made sense.

Then of course there was the strengths of the respective teams.

Neither are predisposed to conservatism: they both made the final last year on the back of their ambition, relentless desire to keep the ball moving and hunt for space.

In short, they both love playing rugby and that’s understandable.

They both have the players for it.

Aaron Smith was at his best guiding the Highlanders around the paddock on Saturday night.

When he invites a runner - any runner - to pick an angle and crash into the opposition midfield, that’s when the Highlanders were so good.

That was the way the opening try was created - a Smith long ball that Malakai Fekitoa came back

against hard before straightening up and powering through a huge hole.

Early in the second half there was almost an identical play where Jason Emery stormed through a hole from a similarly flat pass.

It was a strong reminder why the Highlanders are the defending champions and how much danger they pose when they keep

recycling quickly and probing.

That continual desire to move the point of attack is what makes them so hard to contain.

They didn’t let the Hurricanes settle or have a moment’s piece and it looked as if the visitor’s unravelled a little because of the pace.

They were much improved from their first outing - but then they could hardly have been any worse - but they were still guilty, for too long, of making unforced errors and occasional poor decisions that prevented them from building pressure and points.

By the final quarter they were flowing better and were more certain about where they were attacking.

Beauden Barrett stepped up, took control and used his running game to find holes and play others into them.

His pace is such a weapon - it stretches and breaks defences and the Highlanders couldn’t always scramble fast enough to close him down.

He also seemed to be everywhere. One minute he’s be running at the line, the next he was fielding a high kick in the backfield and launching a counter attack from deep.

As he ran the game for the Hurricanes and Smith shaped it for the Highlanders, it was hard not to drift ahead and start thinking if these could form a stunning combination at a higher level.

Flyhalf Joe Pietersen kicked 14 points as South Africa’s Sharks defeated the Jaguares of Argentina 19-15 in their Super Rugby clash at King’s Park yesterday.

Pietersen, deputising for injured Sharks skipper Pat Lambie, put in a fine all-round performance with ball in hand and from the boot as he landed four penalties and converted a try from flanker Marcell Coetzee.

The Jaguares looked to run at every opportunity but lacked possession and territory.

They scored first-half tries through winger Emiliano Boffelli and fullback Santiago Cordero, while flyhalf Nicolas Sanchez kicked a conversion and a penalty.

The Sharks have started with back-to-back wins, while the Jaguares tasted defeat for the first time in their Super Rugby history after debuting in the competition this season.

Despite not having much of the ball it was the visitors who led early on with some incisive attacks.

Boffelli raced clear on the left wing to dot down, but an unstoppable maul from the home side saw them hit back three minutes later when Coetzee barged over.

For the second week in a row the Jaguares were reduced to 13 men as both loose-forwards, Pablo Matera and Rodrigo Baez, were sent to the sin-bin just past the half-hour mark.

Yet it was the Argentine side who scored next when Cordero chased down a grubber to cross the tryline for the only points claimed by either side during their numerical disadvantage.

That gave the visitors a 15-13 halftime lead, but the Sharks edged ahead again when Pietersen landed a penalty as the Jaguares slowed the ball down at the breakdown.

The Sharks’ dominance at the scrum showed when they won a penalty with 12 minutes remaining and Pietersen opened up a four-point lead that proved decisive.

Meanwhile winger Leolin Zas scored his first try in Super Rug-

by as the Stormers edged fellow South African team the Cheetahs 20-10 at Free State Stadium yesterday.

Flanker Sikhumbuzo Notshe added another score in the second half to edge the visitors in front after the sides were locked at 7-7 at halftime of the bruising encounter.

The Stormers, last season’s South Africa Conference winners, have now won their opening two matches of the new campaign but for the Cheetahs it’s back-to-back home defeats.

The Melbourne Rebels have slumped to their 11th successive Super Rugby loss in South Africa, going down 45-25 to the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

The defeat means the Rebels have never won in South Africa and it was a disappointing display on the back of last week’s encouraging round one win over the Western Force.

Foxes go clear again Leicester City took advantage of a draw between challengers Tottenham and Arsenal yesterday to open up a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League as one of sport’s most unlikely stories moved another step closer to reality.

Leicester’s 1-0 win at Watford, sealed with a Riyad Mahrez goal, put them five points clear of Tottenham and eight ahead of third-placed Arsenal after the two north London sides drew 2-2 at White Hart Lane.

Punter cashes in Leicester-supporting punter Jon Prycke has taken Ladbrokes for £29,000 after deciding to cash in his 5000/1 £20 title bet – despite being adamant he would never take the money early and run. The 59-year-old would have been in for a £100,000 windfall should they have won, but the fear of other sides ‘parking the bus’ has led to him cashing out his bet. “It’s been a crazy season, I’d be silly not to take my money and run.” he said.

City back on the board Manchester City returned to winning ways yesterday with a 4-0 trouncing of bottom side Aston Villa, who are nine points from safety. Sergio Aguero scored twice and missed a penalty for his hattrick while Yaya Toure and Raheem Sterling got the others to move City within two points of Arsenal.

West Ham moved above Manchester United into fifth after a stunning 3-2 win at Everton, scoring all three of their goals in the last 12 minutes.

The South Canterbury golf croquet silver badges finals were held at the Waireka greens on Saturday in fine weather.

The competition pitted the champions of four grades - premier, senior, intermediate and primary - from seven clubs

Australian Brad Kennedy has claimed the New Zealand PGA golf Championship in Auckland. A fiveunder par final round yesterday has given Kennedy a two-shot win to finish on 22 under-par. Josh Geary was the leading Kiwi tied for second, while Ryan Fox finished fourth.

Geraldine’s Brent Cleveland came out on top of the premier grade while Jason Hodgett of Timaru picked up the senior grade honours.

Competition manager Raylene Phillips said the day was enjoyed by all, with a high level of play on show.

“It went very well, it was very busy and was all go all day but everyone enjoyed it and the weather was good,” she said.

The main race at the Clipsal 500 began in absolute farce yesterday, with organisers, broadcasters and teams at odds as to whether it was happening. Storms lashed the Adelaide street circuit, bringing chaos. Pit-teams ran onto the track to equip their cars with wet-weather tyres, with some cars missing out and completing the formation lap in slicks. It made for uncomfortable viewing, with commentators on Fox Sports unable to discern whether the race had started until the second lap.

Derby crowns campaign Serial thriller Rangipo saved his best for last when he closed out a remarkable campaign with a thrilling victory in the Gr.1 BMW New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie.

It was the seventh success of his three-year-old preparation, which featured Group Two wins in the Great Northern, Waikato and Avondale Guineas and a Group One placing in the Levin Classic in the lead-up to Saturday’s classic triumph.

“It’s a great thrill – it’s one of the classics and I’ve won a 2000 Guineas (Sacred Falls), an Oaks (More Than Sacred) and now the Derby so I’ve got the treble,” trainer Tony Pike said.

“It’s such a hard race to win and you’ve got to keep them sound while giving them a fair bit of racing.”

While it was a first Derby for Pike, Rangipo credited his regular rider Vinnie Colgan with his sixth after past wins with Roysyn (1995), Zonda (1997), Hades (1999), Redoute’s Dancer (2007) and Habibi (2013).

Colgan kept the gelding within easy reach of the pace and, as has been a trademark of his performances, he hit the front in the run home and wasn’t to be denied.

Warriors passive’

By DaviD Skipwith Warriors coach Andrew McFadden was at a loss to explain his side’s “passive” start in Saturday’s ugly 34-26 loss to Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium but credited a change in mindset for an improved second-half.

A lack of mental application continues to trouble the Warriors who conceded five first half tries to trail 28-4 at the break, before piling on the points in a more committed second-half that saw them fall narrowly short of completing a remarkable comeback.

McFadden admitted his side failed to match the Tigers’ physicality up front in a disorganised first 40 marred by defensive blunders and disjointed attacking play.

“We were really passive in the first half,” said McFadden.

“They won the physical battle and they had a fair bit of decent skill on the back of it.

“They’ve got a skilful side and we didn’t match up with them there and that was the result.”

The Warriors new-look spine looked unfamiliar and uncertain with high profile signings Issac Luke and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck unable to get into the first half, and new halves pairing Jeff Robson and Shaun Johnson struggled with little go-forward to work off.

Coach Andrew McFadden It will take some time for those combinations to gel but the absence of energy and cohesion throughout the side was alarming and some basic errors at crucial times were unforgivable.

The tone was set when fiveeighth Johnson failed to find touch from a penalty in the opening minute and despite showing spirit and glimpses of their potential in an improved second-half, they lacked the composure, accuracy and steel to snatch the result when it was on offer.

The Warriors forwards found some muscle after the halftime break, with new signing James Gavet, Bodene Thompson, Sam Lisone and Simon Mannering making their presence felt, and rookie hooker Nathaniel Roache added

some spark off the bench.

That momentum allowed Johnson’s attacking flair to come into play and three tries in eight minutes gave them some hope, however Jason Taylor’s men were good enough to hang on before James Tedesco’s 79th minute match-winner.

“I just felt like we were waiting for someone else to do it,” McFadden said.

“And maybe that’s just the combinations and where we are as a team at the moment.

“It’s hard for your halves to do anything when they’re not winning the physical battle.

“Once they started to do that you saw what they can do.

“We’ve obviously got some new faces but I think we realised in the second-half that it takes a team effort and far more purpose with what you do.

“It’s a mindset thing, just a more aggressive approach.

“If it wasn’t for a couple of pretty poor errors at the end we might have been able to sneak home with it.

“But it wasn’t to be and we’ve got to learn from it.”

It doesn’t get any easier for the Warriors, who have a short turnaround before meeting last year’s grand finalists the Broncos at Suncorp on Friday night.

Gallen injury rubs salt in for Cronulla Cronulla face a nervous wait over the next couple of days as the severity of captain Paul Gallen’s knee injury is assessed.

Gallen was taking a hit-up when he slowed into contact 16 minutes from fulltime in the Sharks’ 20-14 first-round loss to North Queensland in Townsville on Saturday.

The injury forced Gallen from the field and Sharks coach Shane Flanagan said the 34-year-old forward will have scans on his right knee.

“He’s pretty dejected in the dressing rooms,” said Flanagan.

“We won’t know (the seriousness) until he has scans.”

A high-level ligament strain for Gallen would make for a horror start to the season for Cronulla, who pushed the premiers hard at home with only a 74th-minute Ethan Lowe try sealing the Cowboys victory.

This season is expected to be Gallen’s last in the NRL after the NSW and Kangaroos veteran signed a one-year extension last year.

Meanwhile Aidan Sezer couldn’t see out his left eye with a suspected

broken cheekbone or eyesocket, but his Canberra team-mates didn’t hear a peep - other than an apology - from their new halfback.

Sezer starred on debut in the Raiders’ 30-22 round-one NRL win on Saturday over Penrith. He sported a plum over his eye after the game and could barely talk.

“Mate, he was great for us,” said fullback Jack Wighton. “It’s just in Sezer (to play on). If you know him as a bloke, and his fitness all preseason - every run, every effort - he’s always up the front.”

The EA Networks Centre Stadium hosted an action-packed weekend of netball, beginning with a skills session for players from eight to

12 years with the Mainland Tactix on Saturday morning.

Rickard was pleased by the girls’ rapid improvement.

“It was fantastic.

“The girls thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a lot throughout the session,” she said.

The Tactix and Southern Steel then took on the Canterbury men’s team, but both fell to defeats in their respective fixtures.

In the afternoon the Tactix and Steel locked horns in their first of

two scheduled fixtures.

The Southerners ran out 64-47 winners on Saturday but the Tactix hit back yesterday with a tightly contested 60-54 win to level proceedings at one match each.
