Local farmers are being reminded to put safety first following two serious incidents last week.

Both Federated Farmers and WorkSafe are urging farmers to think about winter conditions and risks, after two Mid Canterbury farms were the scenes of serious machinery accidents and subsequent Westpac Rescue Helicopter visits last Friday.

Price hike likely to put pressure on Mt Somers Track

Mt Somers Walkway Society president Barry Austin is calling for prioritisation of a planned extension to Pinnacles Hut. The call comes in the wake of Minister of Conservation Eugenie Sage announcing a doubling of hut fees for international visitors on four of New Zealand’s most popular Great Walks.

The price hike is likely to lead to increased tramper traffic on the Mt Somers Track, Austin says, and makes the hut extension all the more important.

Pinnacles Hut was funded and built by the public and later gifted to DOC. A hut upgrade would improve the existing facilities and increase its sleeping capacity from 19 to 26.

Austin said the rock formations around the hut made it an attractive overnight spot for climbing groups, which could stay two to three nights and leave little room for trampers.

Already the Woolshed Creek Hut was often overflowing in peak season, and the Great Walk charges would just make it and

the nearby Pinnacles all the more attractive.

DOC operations manager Dave Winterburn said the changes in pricing on Great Walks had no influence on the timeframe of a potential upgrade. However, in the next 12 months the department would be undertaking feasibility work on the project.

“This includes hut upgrade options, potential build costs, and what other ongoing cost increases might need to be allowed for, for example, potentially more toilet waste to be disposed of,” Winterburn said.

Costs could potentially be high due to the requirements of building in remote locations, such as the need to fly in building materials.

“The feasibility work will give us an indication of potential costs and affordability,” Winterburn said.

“The department is always looking to provide a better experience for Mt Somers visitors.

Meanwhile, the society is continuing improvements on the walkway, and is grateful for a recent donation from a Mid Canterbury family.

both ends of the Mt Somers Track and at the Woolshed Creek Hut. In addition, locals and a contractor had installed culverts on Jig Road and re-established shingle following damage which occurred in April.

A recently established trust is buying Cameron Courts Retirement Village to provide social housing for those aged 60 and over.

The Ashburton Housing and Support Trust (AHST) has bought the village land, and it will gradually purchase the village’s nine villas from each individual owner/ occupier as they leave.

The process is expected to take at least several years, with only two of the villas currently in the process of being sold to the trust.

Spokesperson Jackie Girvan said Cameron Courts was a wellmaintained and designed complex, and as such was well-suited

‘Just another day on the job’

A nine-and-a-half hour rescue mission undertaken by Methven LandSAR volunteers on Sunday has been described as just another day on the job.

After a tramper slipped and severely broke her ankle on Little Mt Peel and other emergency services were unable to reach her, 14 Methven LandSAR volunteers took on the lengthy retrieval task.

The injured woman, from Timaru, had been tramping with her sister near the summit when the incident occurred.

The pair called emergency services at 1pm and a helicopter from Otago managed to dispatch a paramedic to the scene near the summit, but a change in weather conditions prevented the helicopter from getting close enough to retrieve the injured woman.

Two Timaru Police officers and 14 Methven LandSAR volunteers instead headed up the mountain on foot for the rescue mission that took until around 10.30pm.

LandSAR volunteer co-ordinator Russell Currie said the trip up and down the mountain was done in complete darkness.

A total of 17 people took turns carrying the stretcher during the “long, slow” retrieval process.

“It took us about 45 minutes to get up the mountain, and about three and a half, four hours back down. We had to

be very careful carrying the stretcher, with rocks and sharp drops to watch for.

There’s some bits where you had to hold on to the stretcher pretty tight, and of course we didn’t want to bump the patient around too much,” he said.

Paramedics had given the woman medication to help with the pain, and the throng of volunteers helped to keep spirits up during the journey.

“But it’s an awful long time for someone to spend lying on a stretcher. I think she was very relieved when we got to the bottom and we popped her in the ambulance,” Currie said.

The woman’s friend coped well with the walk down but was also “getting a bit exhausted” by the end of the rescue mission, he said.

“It had been a very long day.”

Currie praised the quick response of the Methven volunteers, despite the incident occurring on a long weekend where many would have been away.

Along with the 14 who attended, there were another six or seven on standby.

He also said the two women had done nothing wrong, and the incident was merely an unfortunate turn of events.

“It had been a good day to start with, and sometimes this kind of thing happens.

“You put your foot in the wrong place and down you go,” he said.

“But it was good to see people out there enjoying a bit of tramping and fresh air.”

Farmers given safety warning following accidents From P1 Through the Safer Vehicles, Safer Farms programme, WorkSafe said it will be focusing strongly on reducing the critical risk of working in and around farm vehicles.

Research carried out by the organisation shows there is almost

always a vehicle involved when someone dies as a result of a farm workplace accident.

Almost 90 per cent of farm fatalities involve working in and around vehicles and machinery.

Al McCone, WorkSafe’s sector lead for agriculture, said farmers need to always consider if their

vehicle is the right one for the job.

Using the safety mechanisms provided with those vehicles is also essential.

“This focus isn’t about telling farmers how to farm but helping them make the right decisions when using vehicles, so they can

go home to their families safe and well at the end of every day,” he said.

Milne said safety considerations can also be the key to making a job easier, more efficient and safe.

“Any time a vehicle is involved in the work we do, we need to

be aware of the elevated level of risk,” she said.

“Vehicles are part of everyday farm work but the numbers show that they are the biggest risk to our safety, and the safety of our staff and family, so it’s crucially important we don’t get complacent or lose focus.”

Generosity ‘overwhelming’

Mid Canterbury people who contributed $265,000 to help pay for a roof-top helipad at Christchurch Hospital won high praise yesterday from the group aiming to fundraise $2.1 million for the project, which will deliver critical patients into care earlier.

The 13 Minutes fundraising campaign was based around the 13 minutes it takes for patients to be transported from Hagley Park to the hospital when they arrive in the city by helicopter.

Around 25 per cent of helicopter admissions come from the Mid Canterbury area, according to Michael Flatman, chief executive of the Maia Health Foundation that is running the fundraising campaign.

tions included $150,000 from the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation and $50,000 from Advance Ashburton Community Foundation.

Flatman was in Ashburton with Maia board chairman Garth Galloway yesterday to say thank you at a special morning tea hosted by Kate and Hank Murney and their family.

The Murneys are founding champions of the Maia foundation, which has also just paid for 60 new beds in Christchurch Hospital’s children’s area so parents can sleep beside their sick children.

“This is really an opportunity for us to say thank you to the good folk of Mid Canterbury and Ashburton,” Flatman said.

“Being from Ashburton I always knew what a great community it was but we were

overwhelmed with the amazing generosity.

“We simply couldn’t have achieved such an incredible outcome without this level of support.”

Advance Ashburton trustee Elizabeth Ashford said the helipad project would benefit Mid Canterbury’s rural community significantly.

“Critically-ill or injured patients from Mid Canterbury, who are often first assessed and stabilised at Ashburton Hospital, need to be transferred to the trauma centre in Christchurch as quickly as possible.”

Air retrieval services have increased by around 40 per cent over the past three years and the roof-top helipad will cope with future demands.

Mackenzie Charitable Foundation trustee Don Church said

the helipad was a natural cause for the foundation, which was set up by farming brothers Alan and Don Mackenzie in 1976.

The group makes annual grants of $750,000 to support health, agriculture and children less fortunate than others.

The Canterbury Orthopaedic Services Trust also gave $150,000 to the helipad project.

Mid Canterbury people will have another chance to support the helipad project when a Mid Canterbury-based Maia support group called Club 98 holds a Spring Indulgence feast on October 13.

The foundation still needs to raise $600,000 to reach its $2.1m target by December 2018.

Christchurch Hospital is New Zealand’s busiest trauma centre and the only major hospital without a helipad on site.

A vehicle fire at a car dealership may have started because the wrong gas was used to fill up the tank. Firefighters were called to GWD Motors, in Queenstown, around lunchtime yesterday after reports that a car was on fire. Video footage shows the front of the vehicle completely engulfed. Fire and Emergency NZ senior station officer Mike Ide, of Frankton, said: “The engine compartment and the front of the car were fully involved in flames.

“They just started it up and basically, it ignited.” Ide said the car had been at the garage for repairs.

Missing girl found A missing Blenheim schoolgirl who was missing overnight on Tuesday in freezing conditions has been found safe and well at a friend’s house, police have confirmed.

Faith Vincent, 13, ran away from Marlborough Girls’ College on Tuesday morning. Her mother reported her daughter missing to police on Tuesday night. Just after 3pm yesterday, a friend said the search was over. “She’s been found, thanks guys,” she said on the Facebook page.

Gang associate arrested over meth seizure An associate of Australian gang the Comancheros has been found hiding out in the Far North after avoiding police for three months over $6 million of methamphetamine found at Auckland Airport.

Police said a significant National Organised Crime Group (NOCG) operation in the Far North yesterday has led to the arrest of a senior associate of the Comancheros gang.

The arrest is in relation to Operation Gegenees, which saw 13.5 kilograms of methamphetamine seized at Auckland International Airport in March, which was brought into New Zealand concealed within heavy steel machinery.

Police said the drugs had an estimated street value of at least $6 million.

“Our Special Tactics Group, NOCG, and local Northland staff assisted in the arrest early this morning of a 37-year-old male in Ngataki, who allegedly had been actively avoiding police since March,’’ Detective Senior Sergeant Lloyd Schmid said.

The man, along with four other

people who have been previously arrested, are now jointly charged with Importation of the Class A drug methamphetamine. He is expected to appear in the Manukau District Court today.

Schmid said importing methamphetamine is an extremely serious crime for which the penalty can be life imprisonment.

“Today’s arrest sends a strong message to all organised crime gangs operating in New Zealand – you will be held accountable.

Organised crime gangs are bringing methamphetamine into the country with absolutely no regard for the significant harm it causes in our communities,’’ he said. ‘’We continue to work with our partners to stop this from happening and once again acknowledge Customs for the role they played in this seizure.”

Golden girls farewelled Auckland Zoo staff made the “incredibly difficult” decision to put down their last two lions yesterday.

The elderly pair, 19-year-old Kura and her 17-year-old daughter Amira, were put down for their own welfare, a zoo spokesperson said in a statement.

The upper end of life expectancy for female lions in the wild was 15 years, and 17 years in zoos.

Calling the pair’s euthanasia a “tough goodbye”, the spokesperson said the lions were much loved at the zoo. “It is with great sadness we said goodbye to our two remaining ‘golden girls’.” Carnivore

In a complete turnaround in policy, Housing New Zealand is now not only tolerating illegal drug use in its properties, it is referring tenants to addiction services and other agencies that will help them get their lives back on track.

Yesterday, Housing New Zealand (HNZ) chief executive Andrew McKenzie confirmed that where illegal drug use took place in its properties, the tenants would not be evicted or referred to police, it would instead help them to access the help they needed.

“At the end of last year we’ve moved to a no-eviction policy.

The circumstances in which we will tell people they can’t live in a house are very rare.”

Housing Minister Phil Twyford flagged the change in policy in December and it was now being finalised.

“Housing New Zealand has stopped ending tenancies for methamphetamine contamination and not initiated any new action since November 2017 or ended a tenancy since January

2018,” McKenzie said.

“It’s a dramatically different approach. We’re a social housing landlord. Success for us is keeping somebody in a house and supporting all those other agencies who are trying to help people, that’s the change.

“These tenants are part of society and the best thing that society can do is embrace them and work out how it can help them to be stable.”

All the experts HNZ had consulted on the issue had said a stable home was critical to helping people with issues such as mental health and drug problems.

“We’ll find the agencies that can support you to try to help you cope with it and move away from those issues if possible rather than put you out with nowhere to live,” McKenzie said.

HNZ was working with agencies such as the Ministry of Social Development, district health boards, addiction services, Oranga Tamariki, Corrections, Police and Women’s Refuge.

drug manufacture. “We’d obviously refer that to police,” McKenzie said.

Housing New Zealand has been in the spotlight since Chief Science Advisor Sir Peter Gluckman released a report last week which showed meth residue in homes was not a danger to health.

HNZ’s previous zero tolerance approach resulted in about 300 state housing tenants being evicted in three years for methrelated reasons, with some forced to repay costs for methtesting and remediation.

McKenzie yesterday apologised for that.

He said HNZ had immediately adopted the new higher meth residue levels recommended in the Gluckman report.

“We’re going to adopt it now.

The organisation has to use the best possible advice it has available to it. In the case of methamphetamine contamination it’s been a bit of a moving goal post.

But this is the latest advice and we’re happy to accept that.”

A report released yesterday has revealed EQC issues with staffing levels, data quality, recordkeeping and organisational culture and structure when it comes to settling earthquake claims.

Budget 2018 provided $8 million to establish an independent insurance tribunal to resolve outstanding EQC and insurance claims and $3.3m for a public inquiry to probe the performance of EQC following the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes.

The inquiry will inform legislative changes to the Earthquake Commission Act 1993 and to EQC, and a planned review of insurance contract law.

On the day Woods announced the review, EQC chairman Sir Maarten Wevers resigned.

The EQC received more than 770,000 individual claims for damage to about 168,000 residential buildings as a result of the Canterbury earthquakes.

EQC staff should manually go through all 2600 remaining Canterbury earthquake claims in a bid to finally settle them, some seven years after the quakes, an independent report has recommended.

EQC should also hire more staff to deal with the claims, said the report, by independent advisor Christine Stevenson.

Stevenson, acting chief executive of Customs and a former Corrections deputy chief executive, was enlisted by EQC Minister Megan Woods in February to look at ways the EQC process for Canterbury people could be sped up.

“There is a high personal and financial toll on a number of Canterbury residents with open claims. Woods said the report revealed issues with staffing levels, data quality, record-keeping and organisational culture and structure.

“I have asked Dame Annette King, the interim board chair, to consider these recommendations right away and to swiftly implement appropriate measures,” she said.

The report recommended a team of experienced EQC staff should pull out all the physical files relating to remaining claims and go through them to ensure key data was correct.

Whole families wiped out Lilian Hernandez wept as she spoke the names of aunts, uncles, cousins, her grandmother and two great-grandchildren – 36 family members in all – missing and presumed dead in the explosion of Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire.

“My cousins Ingrid, Yomira, Paola, Jennifer, Michael, Andrea and Silvia, who was just 2-years-old,” the distraught woman said – a litany that brought into sharp relief the scope of a disaster for which the final death toll is far from clear.

What was once a collection of verdant canyons, hillsides and farms resembled a moonscape of ash, rock and debris in the aftermath of the fast-moving avalanche of super-heated muck that roared into the tightly knit villages on the mountain’s flanks, devastating entire families.

Two days after the eruption, the terrain was still too hot in many places for rescue crews to search for bodies or – increasingly unlikely with each passing day – survivors.

A new column of smoke was rising from the mountain and Guatemala’s disaster agency said volcanic material was descending its south side, prompting an evacuation order and the closure of a nearby national highway.

Mum starved her autistic son to death A Connecticut mother who withheld food from her autistic teenage son until he died weighing just 38 kilograms was sentenced yesterday to 11 years in prison.

Katiria Tirado, 34, of Hartford, was also sentenced to five years of probation by a judge who said the mother “failed to provide her son with the basics necessary for life”.

Tirado pleaded guilty in March to manslaughter under the Alford doctrine, meaning while she doesn’t agree with all the state’s evidence she acknowledges there is enough for a conviction.

Her nonverbal son, Matthew, had been vomiting for several days when Tirado sent a text to her sister in the early morning hours of February 14, 2017, that

Matthew was taken to a hospital where he died hours later. He was 1.75 metres tall, weighed 84 pounds and had cuts and bruises on his body,

according to authorities.

The medical examiner said the cause of death was “fatal child abuse syndrome with dehydration and malnutrition”.

His 34-year-old mother screwed cabinets shut and locked the refrigerator, po-

lice said. Matthew had to dig through the trash for food and drank oils and condiments, according to an investigation by state Child Advocate Sarah Eagan.

The family was being monitored by the state Department of Children and Families, but Tirado refused the department’s help and barred anyone from seeing her son, and under state law the agency lacked the authority to force her to cooperate.

Tirado was struggling with her own mental health issues, her lawyer, William O’Connor said.

Tirado turned down an opportunity to address the court.

“She is very remorseful. She does grieve,” O’Connor said.

The new pariahs of NZ society I

t’s hard not to feel like an outsider sometimes, but then again maybe that’s exactly what I am.

You see, I’m one of the minority of New Zealanders who partake in something that is fast becoming one of the most frowned upon things in this country – smoking.

I’m not ashamed to be one. It’s my choice to do it and I’m sure one day, many moons from now most likely, I’ll quit.

But that time is not now and what I choose to do with my life is no-one else’s business but my own.

Yet it seems like that right, which I am entitled to as a taxpaying and law-abiding citizen of this country, is being taken away

from me faster than traffic builds up on the Tinwald bridge on a public holiday long weekend.

So, I’m going to speak up for the minority.

Don’t worry good people of Ashburton, we see the way you look at us.

We note how quickly you pass judgement and how quickly you see us as nothing more than that bit of chewing gum you get stuck on the bottom of your

shoe when you walk around the Ashburton CBD. We get it. We’re not welcome.

Not only is there the everpresent threat of further tax hikes from government, but the public pressure and attitude towards the habit has certainly intensified with the increased media speculation around the subject.

I pay health insurance at higher premiums because of my habit. I’m ok with that.

But being charged through the pocket for it over the counter too? Seriously?

Yes, there are associated health risks with being a smoker, but are those health risks any further advanced or more intense than the frequent intake of alcohol?

If not, then why stick one neck

out for the guillotine and not the other?

What was once an acceptable pastime in New Zealand is now all but banished from social situations.

And, we have to admit to the fact that at some point in the future, this country will become smoke free – but the question is, what does that mean for those of us who still wish to smoke?

Will we be locked away out of sight – away from everyday people who no longer wish to associate with us mere criminals?

It certainly is going to be an interesting time.

The debate has raged for many years now with those who smoke sticking firm to the belief that they are being hard done-by

for making a life choice that so many people around the world make on a daily basis.

And although my judgement might be clouded by some form of bias, I find it hard to disagree.

Stopping smoking altogether in this country may reduce some forms of illness and health problems, but it’s merely a sticky plaster – put in place to keep things happy until the next problem comes along.

What I’ve said above won’t exactly resonate with everyone who reads it, I’m sure of it.

But it’s the honest opinion of someone on the other side of the fence.

The side that’s face down in the dirt and being stepped on at every possible chance.

I

t was the morning after the long, wet Queen’s Birthday weekend.

I peeked out from the curtains after 7am and it was black outside, absolutely pitch!

Already four cups of tea into the day (the first around 5am ... old breakfast show habits die hard), I showered and dressed and prepared to write this column.

“You’ve got a nicer shirt than that,” proffered the contralto voice from the warmth of a nearby duvet.

“This IS one of my new ones,” I replied indignantly, in an instant knowing I had yet another fail on the fashion scoreboard.

“I only got it from the House of Steins a week ago.” (*House of Steins – my euphemism for a reasonably well-known national menswear chain.)

And yet again I reinforced something I have known for virtually my entire life.

I have absolutely no fashion sense. I don’t get it. I don’t understand it.

Others get it, instinctively apparently ... but alas it is all lost on me.

To put it into easily relatable terms, imagine you take the stage to sit down and play second viola with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

The lights dim, the crowd hushes, the conductor raises his baton and the first flourishes of sound fill the venue from talented and skilled musicians with whom you share the stage.

But you ... you suddenly realise not only can you not read a note of the music in front of you, but you have never actually really played the viola.

You thought it’d be a good thing to do once, but when you looked into it, you couldn’t understand it.

It didn’t make one jot of sense.

It was lost on you completely and here you were embarrassingly surrounded by others who were “all over it”.

Well, that’s me when it comes to fashion sense.

As far as fashion goes, Peter Mac reckons he’s got something genetically missing. So, because at 61 he feels that pulling chicks is out of the question, he’s dressing for comfort from now on.

A try-hard, but in reality, no clue.

When I reflect there are many factors. Why can something so “yes” two seasons ago be so “no” now. Who are these people that make the rules, these selfappointed arbiters of sartorial taste?

I want names and I want to sort it out now.

A lot of it, I admit, is entirely my own fault.

Genetically I have something missing which makes me absolutely useless at mathematics, sports and fashion.

I can’t help it, I was born this way.

We’ve made a space in the world for people with all sorts of other kinds of kinks and bends, so I try to just sort of fit in and fudge it.

I always shower at least once a day, brush my teeth and wear clean clothes.

But for the fashion police (read “wife”), that clearly isn’t a big enough effort.

I also like to think of myself as practical. Why have multiple pairs of shoes when a pair of black hikers fits most occasions?

Except weddings. When my

son got married back in 2009, I splashed out on a $20 pair of ex-rental black shoes from a menswear hire outfit.

After all, they’d been flash enough for the last bloke who hired them so good enough for me. And the sucker probably paid more to hire them than I paid to own them!

And now on the mercifully rare occasion when I have to “shift it up a level”, I still press them into service. $10 per shoe over almost 10 years. Or a dollar per year per foot. Great value.

I tell you, if governments and local bodies applied that level of fiscal prudency we’d have a second bridge, four lanes to Christchurch and first-world hospitals everywhere.

But there’s an inexplicable element to it too.

I hope he won’t mind me using him as an example, but how come Tony Todd always looks like his clothes are no more than two hours old, when the reality is he may have had them much longer ... like for almost a full week!

Me on the other hand, I buy something new, looks pretty

good in the big mirror in the shop, but get it home and instantly it’s “haven’t you got something nicer than that” material.

I somehow manage to have the whole business hopelessly out of step. I am the fashion equivalent of David Seymour on Dancing With The Stars. Not an effing clue in the world – but somehow, cruelly, still caught up in the game.

As I stood there contemplating the removal and replacement of my warm, fleecy, long-sleeved comfortable blue check shirt with ... I don’t know what, I gazed semi-glazedly back at my beloved and uttered ...

“I’m nearly 61, pulling chicks is out of the question, what’s the point – I’m dressing for comfort.”

Some causes are indeed, lost.

Tide turning for affected farmers – Guy

Opposition Agriculture spokesman Nathan Guy was in Mid Canterbury yesterday finding out more about how farmers in the region are dealing with mycoplasma bovis.

Guy, who was here at the request of Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon, used the day to catch up with representatives from the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust, Federated Farmers and three different farming families whose herds have tested positive for M. bovis.

He said the feeling he got from farmers was that there had been shortcomings in terms of communication from the Ministry for Primary Industries and compensation, but that a corner had been turned in the past week. That had led to more engagement and certainty going forward.

The Rural Support Trust had been doing very good work providing farmers with psycho-social support, Guy said.

Affected farmers were getting through the situation as best they could, he said, so that they could get back to what they knew best, which was farming.

Guy said despite being in opposition there was an open line to the Government and Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor, which was constructive and solutions-focused, adding that the situation was too important to let politics get in the way.

Water quality action plan launched

MPI releases grazing advice

Agriculture industry groups are among those welcoming this week’s launch of the Good Farming Practice Action Plan for Water Quality.

DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, Federated Farmers and Irrigation New Zealand were among the industry bodies that worked with central and regional government, including ECan, to develop the plan, which aims to accelerate the uptake of good farming practices for improving water quality, to measure and demonstrate this uptake, to assess the impact and benefit of those farming practices, and to communicate progress to the wider public.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand CEO Sam McIvor said that the launch of the plan was an exciting opportunity for New Zealand’s agricultural sector.

“This is the first time that farming and horticulture leaders, regional councils, and central government have come together and agreed to a set of good practice principles, and actions to implement those across the country,” McIvor said.

The 21 principles cover nutrient levels, waterways, land and soil health, effluent management, and water and irrigation

Sam McIvor systems, and these principles build on the work already being done in the sector.

“As an industry, we see the aims of the Good Farming Practice Action Plan as completely achievable.

“At Beef + Lamb New Zealand, we launched our Environmental Strategy and Implementation Plan last month. It’s aligned with the Good Farming Practice Action Plan and will support its achievement.”

strategy and investment leader – responsible dairy said many farmers had already undertaken a huge amount of work to improve their farm environmental practices over the last decade, including stock exclusion from waterways, effluent management and nutrient management, and the action plan will build on that.

“Farm plans will continue to have practical, specific actions for each property, taking into consideration climate, soil and the farm system,” he said.

“But those actions will align with the national set of principles set out by this action plan and be targeted toward the key things which will make the biggest difference in each catchment and across all land users.”

The action plan’s principles build on previous work led by farmers and industry, and allow each region or catchment to prioritise and target the key actions most likely to make a difference to local water quality.

“This new action plan cements the ongoing importance of this work, and our commitment to achieve good farming practices across all farms,” Burger said.

In Mid Canterbury during winter cows have to be moved to feed, and crops to be eaten. But hungry cows and graziers aren’t hooking up as freely as usual with the concerns around sharing the mycoplasma bovis bacteria.

The Ministry for Primary Industries has released advice to clear up any confusion farmers may be having around winter feeding.

Cattle that have undergone “surveillance testing” are very low risk for spreading the disease and so are free to move.

They can be managed on a grazing block just like any other cattle group – separately, with secure fencing, and prevention of mixing with cattle from other sources. However, MPI said avoid grazing on adjacent paddocks or use double fencing.

For those properties under a Notice of Direction (NOD), restricted movement, such as to a grazing block, is possible but a permit is required. Each ICP manager will help their farmers to do this.

A grazing block that takes cattle from a NOD will become a NOD

itself, but there are options to limit the NOD to parts of a grazing block; and to get back to normal quickly.

MPI said any farm under a NOD will not be financially disadvantaged by it.

However, it stressed that for all movements, Nait must be used correctly.

The ministry said any beef farmers who agree to take on NODs and adhere to MPI’s rules, will not find themselves under restrictions after the NOD herd leaves, adding that graziers who agree to take on NOD herd(s) and follow MPIs protocols can expect to have the NOD lifted and be back to business as usual after the NOD herd departs.

“In the very unlikely event that a NOD herd is elevated to an RP (restricted property) or IP (infected property) while on the grazier’s property, or in the spring after departing, as long as the grazier has complied with all requirements and the NOD cattle have been isolated from the rest of the property, the grazier’s remaining property will be unaffected,” the ministry said.

Fonterra signs on to e-commerce

Study to give new welfare insights New research exploring the moods and personalities of farm animals is being seen as an opportunity to better understand and enhance their welfare.

The research looks at how animals respond in new and different situations. It is the latest work by AgResearch’s animal welfare team helping to expand the knowledge of livestock behaviour, at a time of growing consumer demand for strong welfare standards.

The work is being supported by DairyNZ as part of its ongoing focus on enhancing animal care for cows.

“We can’t directly measure how individual animals are feeling, so there is a need

to find indirect measures and that’s what we are seeking to do here,” AgResearch scientist Dr Gosia Zobel said.

“Once we have those measures, we can use them to better understand how personality also contributes to an animal’s welfare. It is important that these measures can distinguish between different personalities in a range of situations, where animals are feeling either positive or negative.”

The first farm animals being studied are goats, as they are easy to work with, adaptable to human contact and there is good evidence for what goats find positive and negative.

Fonterra has signed a deal with Lazada, southeast Asia’s leading online shopping destination.

It’s Fonterra’s first partnership with an ecommerce company in south-east Asia and will see the dairy co-operative’s products, such as Anmum, Fernleaf and Anchor, made available through Lazada to 560 million consumers in six countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The collaboration includes an agreement for Lazada to be the exclusive online distributor of Anchor full cream milk powder in Indonesia, marking Anchor milk’s debut in the market.

Anindya Dasgupta, Fonterra’s global chief marketing and sales officer, said “our relationship with Lazada is a key milestone in our journey to share the goodness of dairy with more people around the world and grow dairy consumption across south-east Asia”.

“Consumers in south-east Asia are becoming more discerning as their incomes grow, demanding more nutritious and high-quality foods and using technology more widely in their daily lives. This means more consumers are shopping online for essentials such as dairy.”

Is this the next step in air travel technology?

BY GRANT BRADLEY Battery-powered airplanes suited to carrying passengers on regional routes or on charter flights are being developed and could be flying around New Zealand within the next decade.

Air New Zealand boss Christopher Luxon said this country would be ideal for the new technology because of its energy mix.

Boeing-backed Zunum aims to have its first hybrid-electric aircraft delivered to a charter airline in 2022. The aircraft will fly up to 12 passengers more than 1000km and the United States company wants to build larger planes with greater range.

The new aircraft is powered by twin fans attached to the rear of its fuselage. The covered fans will be driven by battery-powered electric motors. A conventional fuelpowered motor will initially serve as a back-up system.

Battery packs will be housed in the aircraft’s wings. Battery technology is advancing rapidly with the power-to-weight ratio improving and new materials making aircraft lighter.

Waitaki gets geopark nod from Unesco The New Zealand National Commission for Unesco has given the Waitaki District Council the nod to go ahead with its bid to establish the country’s first Unesco Global Geopark.

The commission called for submissions for New Zealand Unesco geoparks for the first time this year.

Independent geoparks expert advisory panel chairman, the commission’s natural sciences commissioner, Dr Geoff Hicks, said the council’s 152-page proposal was the commission’s preferred candidate, being already in an “advanced stage of development”.

The bid, which includes 101 sites of geological interest throughout the Waitaki District – from Palmerston, north along the coast to the Waitaki River mouth, and up the Waitaki Valley – has been called Waitaki Whitestone Geopark.

“We were impressed by Waitaki Whitestone’s well-considered, high-quality application,” Dr Hicks said.

Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher called the decision “big news” for the district.

A lot of work would be done before the end of November to put together a complete application to Unesco.

“The rubber hits the road now.

And we’ve got over the next six months to put that together, the comprehensive application. We’re looking to the Government for assistance to do that, but we think we’ve got a very good story to tell

The council was “aware of the costs” of a bid “and they are not unreasonable”.

“As far as the opportunities, they are considerable and it’s a matter of making sure we build a good business case, which actually looks at that side of things,” Kircher said.

Tourism Waitaki general manager Margaret Munro has travelled to Greece for a geoparks course.

She would also visit Unesco Global Geoparks in China before returning to New Zealand.

Council chief executive Fergus Power, who led the project team that developed the expression of interest document earlier this month, said if the bid was advanced by the commission a “full dossier” would need to be with the Unesco panel by November 30.

While the project had not yet been expensive, a yet-to-beformed trust would have to secure external investment.

There are 140 Unesco Global Geoparks in 38 countries. If Waitaki Whitestone is ultimately successful, it will be the first in Australasia and would most likely gain Unesco status next year.

Ashburton County Lions On Wednesday May 23 the Lions Club of Ashburton County welcomed two new members with the induction of Janette Andrews and Pauline Paterson. Long service chevrons were presented to Janette Early for 15 years and Jan Stonyer for 10 years of service.

Following our recent Mother’s Day raffle the club was pleased to present $2250 to the Mid-South Canterbury Women’s Refuge and we would like to thank the community for supporting this event.

Donations were also made to Mid Canterbury Rural Driver scheme and the Ashburton Rowing Club to help support Mollie Gibson to attend the Junior World Rowing Championship.

It was great to hear that Faith Faelili our sponsored participant won the young speech makers contest held recently in Oamaru and that the young people we supported to attend the Berwick Outdoor Experience benefited greatly from this opportunity.

Our speaker for the night was Jane Wright from the Mid Canterbury Hospice.

Jane spoke of the work the hospice does in and around Ashburton to support people with life limiting conditions. This support is not just for the person with the illness but also their families and care givers.

She explained the wide range of services available and thanked the club for its support over the years which helped make it possible for these services to be provided free to all those in need.

The next meeting will be our change-over when we thank the out-going committee for all their hard work and welcome our new committee for the year ahead.

Ashburton Golf Club The course is looking beautiful as we move through autumn into winter. The greens staff and committee have really put in a lot of work this year and it is shining through.

The tee signs and ball washer areas are getting lots of wonderful comments, well done to everyone involved, please keep up the great work.

The course did bare its teeth though one recent Saturday, it was playing its longest off the blue tees, and it took some taming.

Young Jordy Bird came out on top that day with a strong game, and is looking like a good bet for this year’s intermediate champs. There were quite a few other good scores on the day, and the senior grade is looking like it’s going to be a really strong field when the knockout stages come round.

You will have last year’s finalist in Jordan and Robbie, Lefty is finding a bit of form, Jeff Hewitt has joined the throng, then Blair, Hamish and Hoppy, and don’t forget semi pro Spud. It’s going to be a humdinger of a champs, when they kick off in September.

We have got a lot of new faces around the club, which is absolutely wonderful. If you do spot a new player who you don’t recognise, introduce yourself, and welcome then.

I know how it can be, joining a new club, it can seem daunting on club day when everyone is chatting to their friends. Especially if they are a bit of a shy introvert like myself.

On that note, the match committee has decided, that moving forward, drawn fours are going to be the norm on Saturday afternoons.

If you go and play golf around the country, most club days are played like this. When you turn up on Saturday, fill your card in and hand it to the starter with your entry fee. These will then be shuffled and picked into groups to play.

I do know some people love playing with their own mates each week, but as mum always said, be nice now and share your toys, let someone else play with them.

I mean I’m not over the moon about it, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will get drawn with Bruce, still it will be a free beer.

We should all have a contact plan with who we are going to talk to and where we can get help if we need it. We need to have a written contact list near the phone not just cell phone contacts and we need to let others; Family, friends and neighbours know what our plans are.

James gave us a good idea of what emergency supplies, for 3-5 days, to put in a container to have ready when such an event occurs. Pasta and pasta sauces are good and VIP not to forget the can opener if you have tinned food. These should be regularly checked to see they are up to date.

For storing water 1 tsp of bleach in 10 litres of water will keep for a year. Our evacuation plan should include a change of clothes and sturdy walking shoes just in case.

James gave us all a wakeup call as some of us were not at all ready. He was thanked with a fruit tray and a round of applause.

Our guest speaker Samantha Trott from Samantha Rose Florist spoke of her training at Christchurch Academy of Floristry in 2006, working as a junior florist and working in Australia.

In 2013 Samantha returned to Ashburton and was working from home before opening her shop on Burnett Street 12 months ago.

Samantha demonstrated the art of putting together a bouquet of flowers and the tricks of wiring & taping flowers. During the summer they prepare flowers for 2–3 weddings per weekend.

Flowers are purchased from the Christchurch United Flower Growers Auction which is run Monday, Wednesday, Friday; Samantha has a wholesaler purchase flowers on her behalf but would like to get back to the auction as she enjoys the thrill of bidding.

Ashburton Photographic Society Our first evening in May saw us out in the Domain with tutor Clair Freil-King from Timaru for our night photography evening. Using her hi-tech method for creating moving light got some excellent shots of the sparks moving in the darkness.

This is definitely something that I am going to try again!

We did not have a Field Trip this month because with Wheels Week Plus, there was just too many options to choose from. We are going to have an internal competition that will be due in July.

Plains Ladies Friendship Club The May meeting of the Plains Ladies Friendship Club was held in the Doris Linton lounge at the RSA rooms on Monday May 28 at 9:45am. Val welcomed everyone. There were 10 apologies. Condolences were given to three members who had lost loved ones and Birthdays and Anniversaries acknowledged.

Two resignations were accepted and the newsletter ‘Highlights’ was available for perusal. The treasurer reported that subs are now due.

Aine Whiting entertained with a few stories before we were introduced to our guest speaker James Lamb who is The Emergency Management Officer for the Ashburton District Council and also their Safety Officer. He told us briefly of his previous 24 years as a Radio Officer for Maritime NZ covering 50 million square miles of ocean from the equator to Antarctica.

Now he is working in the area of Civil Defence, a Government Department run under the Civil Defence Act 2002. It covers Govt and Local Authorities and plans for how to deal with major catastrophes.

There are 16 regions in provincial New Zealand.

Canterbury stretches from Kaikoura to Waimate and we have nine territorial authorities. Our Emergency Ops centre is at Baring Square.

Civil defence is all about resilience planning for major events like Earthquakes, Fire, Floods, Snow and winds. How they will impact us and how we take care of ourselves over the first 3-5 days of a disaster when we may be on our own and have to look after ourselves.

Eight walkers gathered for the afternoon social meet on Saturday June 2 at a hosted run from Milton Road. They walked between 5.5km and 8.5 km in thick cloudy cool 9 degrees and a light easterly wind.

Afternoon tea was enjoyed by all who attended and everyone went home happy. Two Early Bird runners ventured out around the outskirts of Tinwald for a very enjoyable 90-minute run.

Sunday June 3 we had a number of our members compete in the Christchurch ASB Half Marathon and 10km both running and walking categories.

Congratulations to all our members who participated.

Target Shooting Mid Canterbury After a break of two weeks it is hard to know where to start so much has happened.

The highlight of the club’s activities must be the completion of the College 12 PE shooting unit.

A total of 45 students completed the three day programme with a record number achieving the “Excellence” level.

The Coronation club members who assisted in this programme were effusive in their praise of the effort, attitude and friendliness of the students taking part. A credit to their school and to themselves.

Continuing on the theme of young shooters our top juniors have carried the flag all over the South Island. Lanelle McArthur finished second Master Grade and top Junior in Dunedin, Emma Smith cleaned up at the Ashley/North Canterbury championships and on Queen’s Birthday Shania Harrison-Lee became B grade champion at Nelson winning also the top junior award and top B grade shooter for the “top of the South” circuit.

Our senior shooters also were not left out with Nick Stewart winning A Grade at Nelson, Sandy Bennett winning Master Grade at North Otago, Nina McKenzie third in A grade at North Otago, Michaela Smith performed well at North Canterbury finishing only a point or two behind daughter Emma.

This week at Phoenix club the coaching team were feeling the pressure of the significant number of shooters progressing from shooting with a rest to full competition mode. By my count 16 shooters have made this great leap forward and I see another 4 or 5 ready soon.

Many of these are juniors so the future of junior shooting in the area seems to be assured. It would be remiss if I didn’t recognise the quality of coaching and commitment of the entire coaching team from Coronation to this success.

The attention of club members is now turning toward the South Island teams championship (The Andrews and Faulkner) being held in Nelson late July. The rep team is due to be announced soon and team training will start soon after.

Warriors, Cavaliers won’t go Stephen Curry and LeBron James spoke their minds last year. They have not changed their minds this year.

No matter whose team wins the NBA championship, neither superstar will be at the White House anytime soon.

On the day when the Philadelphia Eagles were supposed to be there to commemorate winning the Super Bowl — a visit that was cancelled by President Donald Trump and had the White House accusing players who weren’t planning on attending of abandoning their fans — Curry and James were among those speaking out at the NBA Finals in support of the Eagles.

“I’m not surprised. It’s typical of him,” James, the Cleveland star, said of Trump’s decision to cancel. “I know no matter who wins this series, no one wants the invite anyway. So it won’t be Golden State or Cleveland going.”

On the eve of Game 3 of the Warriors-Cavaliers series, politics dominated the conversation.

Curry raised Trump’s ire last year when he said he wouldn’t go to the White House, prompting the President to disinvite him and the champion Golden State Warriors.

Curry said he spoke with a current Eagles player about the team’s decision-making process and how it went deeper than disagreeing with Trump policies and the ongoing issue of some NFL

people of our country.”

No Eagles players kneeled during the anthem last season.

“Instead the decision was made to lie, and paint the picture that these players are anti-America, anti-flag and anti-military,” the Eagles’ Malcolm Jenkins said on social media.

The Warriors, in lieu of going to the White House, spent that day taking a group of children to the National Museum of African American History and Culture a few miles away.

“I think the President has made it pretty clear he’s going to try to divide us, all of us in this country, for political gain,” said Golden State coach Steve Kerr.

Embattled Cricket Australia CEO quits James Sutherland has announced he’s quitting as Cricket Australia’s chief executive two months after a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa resulted in suspensions for the test captain and vice-captain and the resignation of coach Darren Lehmann.

Sutherland, who confirmed his departure at a news conference yesterday, has given 12 months’ notice and will continue in his position until a replacement is

found.

A former first-class cricketer with Victoria state, Sutherland was appointed in 2001 to replace Malcolm Speed. Participation in the sport grew under his leadership but his tenure was punctuated by some controversies.

In March, captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and opening batsman Cameron Bancroft were caught up in a plot to tamper with the match ball during the third test against South

Africa in Cape Town.

Smith and Warner were subsequently banned by Cricket Australia from international and domestic first-class cricket for 12 months, and Bancroft for nine months. The sanctions were significantly harsher than any imposed by the International Cricket Council for similar offences.

Lehmann quit as national coach less than a week later, after being cleared of any involvement in the ball-tampering incident.

Smith has been replaced as captain by Tim Paine. Justin Langer has since taken over for Lehmann as national coach.

There were five Australian coaches during Sutherland’s tenure. John Buchanan took over in 1999 before Sutherland began as chief executive, was replaced by Tim Nielsen (2007-2011), Mickey Arthur (2011-13) and Lehmann (2013) before Langer was appointed last month.

ABs’ plan of attack secret It’s funny how rugby teams talk about their constant need to innovate and evolve and yet there is now a uniform desire among leading international sides to defend the same way.

The All Blacks are not expecting to encounter much variation this year – they believe every team they play will come at them with a rush defence.

Generating linespeed has become the main focus for all international teams, the thinking being that a defensive blitz can not only shut down the opposition’s attacking space, it can be an effective weapon in forcing turnovers and winning penalties.

The British and Irish Lions used a rush defence masterfully last year. They showed how much pressure can be induced by a fastmoving wall that demands the opposition decision-makers have to think and act quickly on attack and then execute with pin-point accuracy. And so, having seen how the Lions made it work for them, most other international sides have decided to borrow and adapt much of what they did.

The All Blacks saw that last year.

The Australians stormed them in Brisbane with a super fast defensive plan.

It was a constant struggle for the All Blacks last year dealing with teams that used their defence as an attacking weapon and their whole thinking this year is built on finding ways to effectively counter rushing teams.

“The biggest trend is being able to deal with all the linespeed and what variations you can put into your attack to punish that,” says All Blacks coach Steve Hansen.

“We’ve talked about having a triple-threat game [run-catchkick], and it’s having the ability to make good decisions with highend skills.

“More and more teams are doing it, and they’ve been effective.

The good thing is it’s starting to happen here and we’re having to adapt and adjust every day, rather than just every now and again.”

Hansen won’t give away how they intend to adapt their attacking style but the answers will be evident against France. - NZME

Tight tussles on premier card

The last time they played, only one goal separated United A and College A. Tonight, they’re set to meet each other again in Mid Canterbury Netball’s ACL premier one competition and chances are it’s going to be just as tight again.

College A won that last encounter 25-24, keeping cool and calm against a much more experienced side to land the winning goal with the clock winding down.

United A know that things can change though. A few weeks ago, United A beat Hampstead A in round one, only to have Hampstead A turn that result around and win when they next met in round two a couple of weeks later.

Previous results don’t always count for much, particularly when they’re close, and United A has had the slightly better start to the second round. They’re one win from two so far, while College A is none from two and bottom of the table.

One opposition they’ve had in common in the past two weeks has been the premier one newcomers, Mt Somers. It’s the first time Mt Somers has entered a team in premier and they started the season off in premier two but won that and earned themselves automatic promotion to premier one.

It’s been a mixed start for Mt Somers though. Last week they went down to United A by 31-24, while the week before that they gave College A a taste of their own medicine, beating them by one goal just a week after their own last-minute one goal win over United A. Close results have been a feature of the past few rounds, particularly for College A. As well as their two in a row in the premier competition, last week they fought out yet another thriller, beating St Andrews College by one goal in a Canterbury secondary school netball SuperNet match.

Breakers sign Moore The New Zealand Breakers have locked in their first import for the upcoming season, signing 24-yearold American small forward Armani Moore on a one year deal.

Moore spent four years at Tennessee before beginning his professional career in Poland and Germany, and profiles as a defensive specialist. In his senior year in Tennessee, he averaged 12.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.6 blocks, and Moore hopes to bring that versatility to the Australian league.

Strong 3x3 squad New Zealand has named a strong men’s squad ahead of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup in the Philippines, which tips off tomorrow. Karl Noyer, the number one FIBA ranked player in New Zealand, and Aaron Bailey-Nowell are back after finishing fourth at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup in China in May this year.

Everard Bartlett joins the squad after suiting up for the Taylor Bay Hawks in the Sals NBL. He’s also a 3x3 player, having represented New Zealand in 2017 when he was part of the team that won silver at the 3x3 Asia Cup in Mongolia.

The fourth player to be named is former Under 18 World 3x3 Champion, Sam Timmins, who has made himself available during a break from his US College duties.

That game was last week’s clash between Methven A and Hampstead A which finished in a draw thanks to a final quarter comeback from Hampstead A. They’ll need plenty of that fighting spirit tonight, too, with the unbeaten Celtic A their next opposition.

Celtic A head into the match off a nine-goal win over College A last week, but they didn’t have it all their own way. It was the first time this season Celtic A have been kept below 30 goals.

That game between Celtic A and Hampstead A will be the feature match at 7.30pm tonight at the EA Networks Centre, following the match between United A

and College A, and the one between Mt Somers A and Methven A at 6.30pm.

In tonight’s premier two action Celtic tC will take on College B, before Celtic B play Rakaia A, and Methven B takes on the Southern side which has won one from two matches since being relegated from premier one to premier two at the end of round one.

All Whites win The All Whites took a small step forward yesterday in Mumbai.

After disappointing losses to Canada and Kenya in the first two matches of the Fritz Schmid era, they finally got a result, with a 1-0 win over Chinese Taipei. It was a sometimes untidy display in a scrappy game, but in such situations the score line is all that matters.

row night, before a massive day on the court on Saturday culminating in finals on Saturday night.

“The numbers are bloody good, to be honest, we’ve had to turn a few people away,” Robinson said.

Around 60 per cent of the field was Methven locals, while the remainder was made up of players from around the Midlands

squash district and a couple from Christchurch.

One of those Christchurch entries was Simon Slade and Robinson said he’d be the one to beat in the top men’s grade.

He entered the Methven tournament last year and had such a good time, he had come back, Robinson said.

“He couldn’t believe how tournaments like this existed in the rural communities.”

A tournament also being held in Christchurch this weekend meant the Methven tournament hadn’t been on the radar of many city players, so it was great to have Slade back for another crack, Robinson said.

Captain in doubt Warriors captain Roger TuivasaSheck is in major doubt for Saturday’s NRL clash against Manly in Christchurch. The 24-yearold fullback took limited part in training this afternoon on a cold and wet day at Mt Smart Stadium, after exiting the field with an ankle injury late in the Warriors’ 30-10 loss to South Sydney 11 days ago.

The problem was not initially believed to be serious but TuivasaSheck has been on restricted duties and only managed to get through some light running away from the rest of the side with the rehab group before finishing yesterday’s session early. Backline utility Peta Hiku ran in his place at fullback after being named to play at centre and it remains to be seen whether the former Kiwi test fullback has to cover the No 1 role at AMI Stadium.

Almost 30 girls turned up to last month’s Mid Canterbury Rugby Union-run have-a-go day for girls.

Fern power helps girls gain traction The success of a have-a-go day organised by the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union (MCRU) for girls last month has led to a further three free sessions specifically for girls being planned.

The next will take place tomorrow at the Ashburton Showgrounds from 4pm until 5pm and it is open mainly to Year 5 and Year 6 girls, but also to stronger and older Year 4s, MCRU rugby development officer Jason Ree said.

It was the first time a session specifically aimed at that nine

and 10 year old bracket had been held in Mid Canterbury and it was part of building towards a future where the MCRU hoped to one day be able to field a women’s representative team.

Ree said 27 girls went along to the first have-a-go day and he was hoping to see even more tomorrow.

The New Zealand Rugby Union had an ongoing focus on getting more girls into rugby and the have-a-go sessions were part of that, giving girls an opportunity to learn skills in a safe and con-

trolled environment.

Ree said the majority of the girls who took part in the first session were from Methven Primary School, where former-Canterbury women’s rugby player Milly Deans was a teacher.

Her former team mate and Black Fern Kendra Cocksedge was currently the women’s rugby co-ordinator for the Crusaders rugby region, and Ree hoped to get her down to Ashburton for one of the sessions to help out.

During the first have-a-go session the girls were taken through

a tackle clinic, which they’d finish off tomorrow night and look at the breakdown area, before having a go actually tackling each other.

Ree said hopefully if the numbers remained strong they’d be able to play some actual games amongst each other in the other two sessions.

The other two have-a-go sessions will be on June 22 and July 6. The sessions are free and mouthguards are essential.

Mouthguards would be available for those who don’t have one.

Taranaki will not play at their home ground of Yarrow Stadium this Mitre 10 Cup season due to safety reasons. Stadium owners Taranaki Stadium Trust say a safety-first approach is behind the reason to make the stadium unavailable in 2018, after geotechnical testing on the stadium’s West Stand showed that it was a significant earthquake risk. Reports into the West Stand were commissioned after a November report found the stadium’s East Stand was earthquake-prone. “It’s a real blow and we apologise to everyone involved. The Trust informed key partners, including the TRFU, of the report’s findings yesterday,” says trustee Mike Nield.

Fourth AM challenger A fourth syndicate has announced it will challenge for the America’s Cup in 2021. Sailing website Scuttlebutt reports Italian syndicate Sardinia Challenge will join Challenger of Record Luna Rossa (Italy), Ineos Team UK (Great Britain) and American Magic (US) for the Auckland event.

Cup bid on Daytona Red’s radar A trip to Riccarton is the longterm plan for the progressive stayer Daytona Red. The four-year-old won three races during his last campaign and was turned out after an impressive performance to claim top honours at the expense of the highly-regarded Felaar in the Listed New Zealand St Leger (2500m) at Trentham.

“He’s been back in work for a week and his main goal will be the New Zealand Cup,” trainer Shaune Ritchie said.

“He can handle some wet tracks so that makes it easier to get him ready.”

Ritchie has also welcomed another promising stayer back into the fold with Excalibur in light work.

“He doesn’t handle wet ground so we’ll potter along with him and go along slowly,” he said.

Shez All Rock breaks drought Those on course at the 2018 edition of the Harness Jewels at Cambridge were treated to something special in the 3YO Diamond when Australian filly Shez All Rock secured victory.

It was a brilliant front-running performance, one in which she stopped the clock at 1.51.9 with a five-length margin to her contemporaries.

Significantly, it signalLed the end of an 11-year drought for Australians at the Harness Jewels.

Yes, she won in the name of Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen, but she wore the green colours of her homeland and will head back across the Tasman to former trainer Mark Pitt almost immediately.

Purdon, usually reserved, was in raptures post-race and gave the daughter of Rock N Roll Heaven a significant rap.

“She was just beautiful today and it was just brilliant the way she did it today.

“She could have gone a second quicker if I asked her to.”

Purdon picked out Shez All Rock, the Victorian and New South Wales Oaks winner, for good friend Chris Ryder, a former Kiwi based in New Jersey who was on the lookout for a good

Demonetization back Demonetization, one of this season’s most promising threeyear-olds, has returned to the Pukekohe barn of trainer Nigel Tiley in preparation for a race day return. The son of All Too Hard won three of his four starts in his classic season, including a laststart victory in the Gr.2 Auckland Guineas (1600m), and was runnerup in the Listed Eagle Memorial 3YO (1500m) in his only defeat.

Tiley is excited to have Demonetization back in the stable, but is in no rush with the colt.

“We’ll just give him a nice, long slow build-up and hopefully have him going again in the spring.

“He’s had an injury, so at this stage the most important thing to concentrate on is his rehab. Once we have got him through his first couple of months of long steady work then we will start to look at some targets for him.”

She cost a pretty penny, but it looks cheap now after she won the New Zealand Oaks and now the Diamond in her first two starts since acquisition.

Could she be the buy of the decade?

“I think Mark (Pitt) was in a position where he wanted to buy a house and once he thought about it, figured it was better to have the money in the hand.

“Tony Parker once said money doesn’t go sore,” said Purdon with a chuckle.

Parker was the original coowner of Auckland Reactor and sold him for in excess of $3 Million as a three-year-old.

Just as quickly as Purdon and an adoring New Zealand public fell in love with Shez All Rock, they will have to say goodbye – she’s off to Australia next week and, eventually, America.

“She’ll go back across to Mark now and contest the Vicbred and Breeders Crown before heading to America.”

Last year’s Diamond winner from this crop, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, put in arguably her best run of this season for second while the winner’s stablemate, Elle Mac, made ground for third after being three-wide for most of the race.

Beltoy is forward to resume in today’s New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Pearl Series Race (1200m) at New Plymouth. “She won a trial nicely and a jumpout so we expect a bit from her,” trainer Kylie Little said. The Per Incanto three-year-old placed twice last season and also finished fourth behind the now Hong Kongbased Waldorf in the Listed Ryder Stakes (1200m).

BOWLERS TO THE CORE

There wouldn’t be much Roger and Diane Gutberlet don’t know about bowls.

Between them they’ve held most of the offices at the Ashburton Bowling Club, have won countless club, sub-centre and wider titles, and together they’re charged with ensuring the club’s greens are in tip-top shape.

That’s why the club decided to add one more title to their long lists of achievements recently, by making the husband and wife duo life members of the Ashburton Bowling Club.

They were titles which came as a surprise to the couple; they said they did what they did purely for the love of it, not the accolades, and they both plan to keep doing

what they do for as long as they possibly can.

Roger – a sworn police officer for 32 years – was the first of the two to start playing bowls, joining the Ashburton Bowling Club in 1986.

“I took it up mainly because of Brian Goodwin, he was the senior sergeant here at the time, and he was a very good bowler. He won the club singles about 10 years in a row and the guy who he beat in the final about half those times, was me,” Roger said.

Roger credits his former boss for getting him – and half the police officers at the Ashburton Police Station around that time – started in the sport that has become a huge part of his life.

In 1987, he talked Diane into joining him.

“I said come down and play bowls and she said bowls was a game for little old ladies in long skirts,” Roger said.

For Diane, who attended two Commonwealth Games in athletics, it was a vastly different sport than she was used to, but she decided to give it a go.

“And within a few years she was playing for New Zealand,” Roger said.

On the greens, Diane has won three New Zealand titles, she played in a trans-Tasman test against Australia in 1999, and has won 11 Canterbury centre titles, as well as more than 70 championship titles. Off the green she’s been president, vice-president, bar convenor, cards convenor, selector, newsletter editor and has been on the match and tourna-

ment committees.

Roger has won 36 club championship titles, 27 club titles and eight sub-centre titles, and his biggest contribution when not playing has involved making sure the club’s actually got somewhere to play.

Between the two of them, the Gutberlets keep the club’s greens in the best shape possible. Since 1999, Roger has been the greenkeeper.

He’s got a good boss – Diane is the greens superintendent.

They put in a lot of time and effort, but to them it’s not really work – it’s what they love doing.

So being made life members has been a bit overwhelming, the couple said.

It’s not likely to be the last title they receive though, there’s plenty

still up for offer on the greens over the next few years which should see them again add their names to a championship board in the clubrooms which already has their names dotted all over it.

In fact, that board is one place where Roger reckons he’s got one up on Diane.

He’s got his name on every column of that board, coming back and playing lead in the triples just to get his name in that last column where he didn’t feature, about 15 years ago.

Diane has won all the titles – singles, pairs, triples and fours – but not from every position. For the majority of hers, she’s been skip, so has not won the fours or the triples from every position.

There’s plenty of time for that to change, though.
