Dance teacher Julie Hawke has been recognised as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to Highland dancing in yesterday’s Queen’s Birthday Honours line-up. Now based in Christchurch, Mrs Hawke lived in Ashburton for about 16 years from 1990, where she established the highly successful Julie Hawke School of Dance. Mrs Hawke had never heard the bagpipes or seen Highland dancing when she took her first steps at seven years of age, under the guidance of well-known teacher, the late Muriel Waugh, in

She was hooked from the onset, and her involvement with the Highland dancing community now spans decades. While she is not aware of any Scottish heritage, the whole family is now immersed in the Celtic culture. Just on 100 students are enrolled across the two studios, making Julie Hawke School of Dance the largest Highland dancing school in New Zealand. Mrs Hawke’s passion for Highland dancing has never waned. “It is such a wonderful supportive community and I feel very honoured to accept this award on behalf of the community,” she said.
