Emotional farewell to school’s ‘rock’

For 28 years, she’s been the friendly face behind the desk at the Netherby School office.

But yesterday marked the final school bell for Annette Hunt, as she said goodbye to her office administration job and hello to her retirement.

Principal Phil Wheeler said it was with great sorrow and joy she was leaving – sorrow because she would be missed, but joy because she was heading into the golden years of retirement.

He described how she has been pretty unflappable despite being expected to fit everything and know everything – and having everyone constantly dump their documents and yoghurt containers on her desk.

Teachers and students have come and gone, but she has been the rock of the school, Wheeler said.

At a special assembly yesterday Hunt was given a luxury throne to sit on, while being indulged with cards, performances, hugs and messages of gratitude and love from students.

“You’re truly, thoroughly totally awesome – two thumbs up,” Wheeler told Hunt.

Annette Hunt was swept up into dozens of bear hugs as she departed Netherby School yesterday.

New entrants put pressure on schools

Surging numbers of new entrants are putting the squeeze on Ashburton primary schools.

Ashburton Borough School, Hampstead School and Netherby School are among those having to start new classes for their new entrants next term and seeking extra space and teachers to do so.

One class were having to take their lessons in the library at Netherby School due to the growth and principal Phil Wheeler said it had been challenging to find a new teacher.

While his school’s new class-

room was only temporary – for terms 2 and 3 – the school roll was “way up” on its normal level, Wheeler said.

Additionally, the school had a population bulge of Year 2 students, he said.

Allenton School had seen steady growth in both their new entrant classes and throughout other year levels.

“We’re about 20 up on this time last year … pretty close to 400 students altogether,” principal Bruce Tilby said.

While they were equipped to deal with the growth in terms of resourcing, he said the school is beginning to run out of space.

There are plans currently in place to replace five classrooms and build another, but it could take up to three years to complete, Tilby said.

“If we had to add another classroom now, we’d be putting them in the library.”

Tilby said the school could always do with more staffing, but that was an ongoing problem for many schools.

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said they were okay for space and were fortunate to have known an available teacher for their new classroom, but agreed getting anyone from outside was difficult.

“The teachers are just not there at the moment.”

Meanwhile over at Methven Primary School, a new entrant classroom was due to be established in term 4 – but that was “pretty standard,” acting principal Keryn Hooker said.

The school usually have to add an additional classroom around that time of year, and no significant growth had been observed across the year levels, she said.

The population of the Ashburton District had increased by over 13 per cent during the last census period, compared to just over five per cent nationwide.

Three new members on EMC board There are three new faces sitting on the board of Experience Mid Canterbury.

Earlier this week, the Ashburton District Council announced the appointment of Sarah Jones, Gareth Reed and Bevan Rickerby to the Experience Mid Canterbury board.

Applications were sought to fill three vacancies on the board of Experience Mid Canterbury in May. Candidates were shortlisted and interviewed by Council and Experience Mid Canterbury last month.

Mayor Donna Favel said that each of the successful applicants were of a high calibre and would bring particular skillsets to the Board which would be of great benefit to Experience Mid Canterbury.

“It was impressive meeting and interviewing Sarah, Gareth and Bevan for the Board appointments,” Favel said.

“They each bring valuable experience, knowledge and skills.”

“I look forward to seeing them make a positive contribution to promoting our district as a great place to visit”.

Experience Mid Canterbury is a Council-Controlled Organisation (CCO) whose role is to ensure the greater Mid-Canterbury region is marketed as a visitor destination to maximise the long-term benefits of the district’s economy.

EMC Chairman James Urquhart was delighted in the high calibre of applicants who applied.

“We have a strong passion for tourism in our region and the wealth of experience our new board members will bring to our district will only see Mid Canterbury become a stronger and more vibrant region for tourists to visit,” he said.

The new board members will start immediately and have been appointed for three years.

With term 2 officially ticked off, organisations across the district are gearing up for school holidays and preparing their very best winter entertainment.

More than 40 activities are now listed on the Ashburton App Kids Events Button – with swimming to soap-making, dancing to mug-decorating – and something for every age, interest and budget.

One destination catering for learning-based activities is the Ashburton Museum, with dropin hat-making (Project Tekau), a Make Your Own Wiggle-bot class on July 17, and a Teddy Bears Sleepover on July 10, to celebrate World Teddy bears day.

Museum Director Tanya Robinson the latter will be a “big night” of adventure and mischief for any teddy ready to spend a night without their human.

The museum are also encouraging families and kids to get out and make the most of Ashburton’s fabulous facilities and experiences with their “Burty challenge”, Robinson said.

Participants can complete a mission to collect stamps at the Ashburton Museum, EA Networks Centre, Ashburton Library and Ashburton Domain, with all answers added to their MidWinter Burty Challenge Passport.

Once all four activities are completed, the cards go in the draw for a prize.

“This is a fun way to get out of the house these holidays,” Robinson said.

If getting moving’s your thing, the EA Networks Centre and Ashburton Collegiate Squash Club are two go-to destinations.

Local company wins Civil Defence build

Newspaper ad scam

Des Millar Construction has been appointed to build the temporary Civil Defence headquarters.

Ashburton District Council announced the appointment yesterday afternoon.

Council received five tenders through a selected tender list process, after design and plans for a relocatable building had been completed by Blue Print Architectural Services.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said it was important that the work is completed as soon as pos-

sible to provide council with a Civil Defence headquarters that meets the IL4 standards.

“It is pleasing for the project to reach this milestone,” she said.

“While it is a temporary measure until the new administration and library building is completed, this will ensure that council has an operational Civil Defence headquarters in the meantime.

“By moving meeting room space into this temporary location, work will progress on clearing the former County Council

building to allow for the administration and library project to proceed as quickly as possible.”

The temporary Civil Defence headquarters will be located at 137 Havelock Street, where the old villa building formerly sat.

The building is expected to be completed by December this year.

Once the administration and library building is completed council will consider options to sell or re-use the temporary Civil Defence headquarters.

Allen’s Ashburton offer a great service

A new scam involving newspaper advertisements is predicted to potentially leave people thousands of dollars out of pocket.

Police have been alerted to a scam that involves newspaper advertisements offering to pay £500 a week to anyone willing to have their vehicle wrapped in branding for an energy drink.

Police understand the scammers send a cheque for £6500 ($12,647), along with instructions for the recipient to bank it, keep £500 and transfer the remaining amount – before the cheque clears – to another account to pay for the vehicle wrapping.

The cheque will then bounce,

leaving the recipient out of pocket.

“While we’re not aware of anyone falling for the scam, it has been reported to us, and it’s a reminder to be extra vigilant – if something seems too good to be true, it probably is,” Stratford Public Safety Team Constable Cameron Hunt said.

“The ads ran in newspapers about mid-June and the cheques are now arriving from the United Kingdom.

“Anyone who has received one of these cheques is urged not to bank it.”

Anyone who believes they are a victim of the scam should report the matter to their local police.

Hundreds gather to celebrate YF contest Mid Canterbury was well represented at the 50th anniversary celebration dinner of the Young Farmer of the Year competition, held in Invercargill on Thursday night.

Former winners and finalists were among a 400-strong crowd which gathered to mark the milestone, including Pendarves farmer Tim Porter, a winner in 2002, and Dromore’s Denise Clemens, who as Denise Brown was the competition’s first woman finalist in 1981.

“This is the first time we’ve had so many grand finalists in one room,” said NZ Young Farmers chief executive Terry Copeland.

Guests entered the venue through a corridor lined with contest memorabilia, including trophies and winners’ cloaks.

Porter’s victory in the competition came in dramatic fashion in his second attempt at the national final.

“I ended up in a dead heat and they had to do a countback which took five to 10 minutes,” he recalled.

“It was a nervous wait for my family, but I was just happy to be finished.”

Porter said he always had a desire to follow in the footsteps of Catto twins Warwick and Grant – who both took out the title.

“I used to shear with Grant. I remember he’d sit there studying the Lincoln Farm Technical Manual during smoko breaks,” he said.

“It was a goal of mine since I was a teenager to win the FMG Young Farmer of the Year contest.”

Clemens said she really admired the women who make it through to the grand final today because the contest has a much larger practical component than it did when she competed.

“I don’t think it will be long until we have a female grand champion. Women can do anything.”

Thursday’s night’s event was punctuated by handshakes, laughter and reminiscing as former contestants and organisers celebrated five decades of winners.

“It’s amazing. It’s just like a school reunion isn’t it,” said Levin farmer Geoff Kane, 66, who won the national final in 1981.

with the contest at the same time I was,” said Dannevirke’s Nolan Williams, who was 27 years old when he took out the national final in 1973. Back then the contest was still a radio quiz.

“There were no practical elements like there are today,” said the retired sheep and beef farmer.

“I think it’s much better having a mix of theory and practical challenges.

“In 1973 there were only four grand finalists – two from the North Island and two from the South Island. It was quite different to what it is now,” he said.

The inaugural television broadcast was in 1981.

“We were all pretty green about what was required for television,” Kane said.

“We were extremely dressed up and serious. Today the contest is more entertaining and has a bit more audience appeal.”

still recalls the modules finalists had to tackle.

“Horticulture was just coming into its own in the 80s, so we had to plant and prune a few trees,” he said.

“We also had to hang gates, fix a water pump, repair the chain on a motorbike and deal with a tractor that had run out of diesel.”

The winner’s prize pool has varied over the years, but often included farm machinery and overseas travel.

“My prize included a ute, a motorbike and an Air New Zealand travel package,” Porter said.

“I won a 21-day trip around Hawaii in the United States and a new tractor,” added Kane.

“But most importantly I won the esteem of winning the Young Farmer of the Year which has been great throughout my whole life.”

This year’s grand final winds up in Invercargill tonight with a quiz and awards evening at Stadium Southland.

Teacher grabs pupil’s face, twists nose

By Sadie Beckman A Horowhenua primary school teacher has been stripped of her teaching registration after grabbing the face and twisting the nose of a student with Down syndrome, and causing scratches to the child’s face and neck.

Yvonne Horohau Te Peeti was struck off in a decision released this week by the New Zealand Teachers’ Disciplinary Tribunal for the incident, which is not the first time she has been investigated for using force against students in her care.

Two other incidents in 2003 and 2008 were investigated by her school’s board of trustees, where she allegedly punched a pupil and claimed it was a push, and also hit another student on top of the head and kicked him on the backside.

The most recent incident occurred in November 2016, when Te Peeti became frustrated with a Down syndrome student who had not followed instructions to clean up the classroom.

She reacted by grabbing and pulling the child by the face, twisting the child’s nose as well as causing scratches to the neck.

Te Peeti did not report the incident, but instead another child who witnessed it told the victim’s mother, the tribunal report said.

The child cried and remained upset for some time after the incident and the face and neck injuries were visible for at least four

hours after the incident.

When confronted by the mother and school principal, Te Peeti acknowledged her conduct.

Later that day she wrote a statement saying she knew what she had done was wrong and that she was apologetic, however, the tribunal said there was no evidence she had apologised to the child

concerned.

The child’s mother made a police complaint. However, after investigating, the police decided not to take the matter further, although noted Te Peeti’s behaviour was unacceptable.

The teachers’ disciplinary tribunal’s decision stated the physical force used was a clear-cut case of

herself “unfairly targeted”.

In a written statement to the tribunal, which it called “vitriolic in tone”, Te Peeti said she was “willing to step up to the crime that I committed (as you see it from your point of view)”, but the possibility that she will lose the right to teach constitutes the council “[spitting] in her face again”.

In the statement Te Peeti focused on the possibility of losing her ability to teach te reo Maori to adults because of the decision.

“Is there to be no mana left for me, or are you all trying to strip me of the lot,” she wrote.

However, the tribunal stated the incident was an assault, with an element of violence, triggered by Te Peeti’s loss of composure when faced with supposedly challenging behaviour on the part of the child.

“It should almost go without saying that [the child] is an inherently vulnerable child and there was no basis whatsoever for Ms Te Peeti to use force in response to the trivial transgression she described,” the report said.

“Also, it is an aggravating factor that the respondent targeted [the child]’s head. When these features are considered together, we are left in no doubt that the threshold that must be met for an act to amount to physical abuse is reached in the respondent’s case.”

As well as having her registration cancelled, Te Peeti was ordered to pay costs of $1428.76.

Landlord boots pregnant woman out of home A heavily pregnant woman has won compensation after her landlord booted her out of her home because he didn’t want to be woken by a crying baby.

Jelena Pavic was 33 weeks pregnant when she was ordered out of her rental home at short notice by landlord Christopher Norton Bradfield.

The Tenancy Tribunal ordered Bradfield to pay $2500 to Pavic for unfairly discriminating on the basis of pregnancy – as part of a total compensation payout of $6061.43.

The full payout also included refunded rent and bond payments after Bradfield increased Pavic’s rent with one day’s notice, failed to lodge a bond and issued an unlawful termination notice.

His termination notice to Pavic came in January after she had been living in the property in Browns Bay in Auckland’s North Shore with her husband Milos for 18 months.

But while Bradfield was required by law to give the couple 90 days notice to vacate, he instead

gave them only 30 days.

In his termination notice he claimed the apartment was not “designed” for three people.

“Furthermore, as you are aware our bedroom is right next to your lounge, and that we do not see our way fit to maybe have interrupted sleep due to the new baby,” he wrote.

In addition to being discriminatory, Pavic told the Tenancy Tribunal the stress of Bradfield’s short notice put her into a “desperate and hopeless situation”.

Pavic then wrote to Bradfield to say she had found a new apartment but would need to move out within four days to accept it so she could be ready to give birth within four weeks.

Weather to be changeable After a scorching, record-breaking summer the winter chill has arrived, and it may take a while to warm up again.

The first six months of the year are a story of warm and wet, while the latter half is predicted to be cooler and more “changeable”.

Figures from Niwa showed between January and June, record or near-record high mean monthly temperatures were reached 163 times.

Conversely, there were just three record or near-record low mean monthly temperatures.

“In other words, for every record or near-record cold temperature, there have been about 54 warm ones,” Niwa meteorologist Ben Noll said.

Those temperatures made it the fifth warmest start to any year on record, sitting behind only 1998, 1937, 1999 and 2016.

From January-June 2018, record or near-record high mean monthly temps were reached a staggering 163 times. During the same period, there were just 3 record or near-record low mean monthly temps. That’s a ratio of 1 cold extreme for every 54 warm ones.

The warmest months were January to March, while April to June were near average.

January was the country’s warmest month on record at 3.1C above average.

Noll said the high temperatures were pushed along by the Tasman Sea and New Zealand coastal marine heatwave, and La Niña’s north-easterly winds.

“The marine heatwave represented one of the largest ocean temperature anomalies in the world. As an island nation where the seas go we go. If there are above-average temperatures in the water, we get that on land.

“Combine that with La Niña driving warm winds from the tropics and it is almost the perfect storm for abnormal warmth.”

Parents complain at ‘crazy’ supermarket alcohol rules

BY MEGHAN LAWRENCE Dozens of parents have shared tales of supermarkets refusing to sell them alcohol when their children are with them.

This week the Herald told the story of a mother who was stopped from buying alcohol at a supermarket because she had her children with her. The resulting media attention led to Countdown NZ apologising to her for being “overcautious”.

However, many others have come forward sharing similar stories and hundreds more have contested current selling practices.

Ken Emmens, of East Auckland, said he had a similar experience shopping at Countdown Highland Park with his 17-year-old daughter.

“We bought some booze – a box of beer and a couple of bottles of wine – plus other groceries and we got to the counter and they asked whether it was for my daughter, but I told them it was for me,” the middle-aged father said.

“She looked at me and said they couldn’t sell it to me because they weren’t sure if it was for me or my daughter.”

Emmens said the whole experience was frustrating and bizarre.

“It was crazy. So stupid. Who are they to decide who the alcohol is for?

“It was impossible to prove that the alcohol was for me and my wife and not my daughter, but they wouldn’t relent,” he said.

“I suppose they were being super cautious but where do they draw the line on what is exceptable for the kids age to be with you?”

Shoppers shared their tales in dozens of post on the Herald’s Facebook page.

“I’ve been refused ... my son’s 14. I was refused when my 17-year-old nephew was standing behind me too. I’ve even been refused because my partner didn’t have his ID. “I had a 10 second conversa-

tion with someone I bumped into while shopping at Countdown and was denied service 10 minutes later. I barely even knew the guy,” another reader wrote.

In a similar vein another reader said: “Some supermarkets definitely take it too far. There was a young couple in the checkout line behind me at Pak n Save once and I got refused because the checkout lady thought they were with me. Even after both me and the couple said we don’t even know each other – I still got refused!

Stupid.”

So when it comes to buying alcohol with, or for your children, what are the laws?

NZ Alcohol Law states that it is illegal to supply alcohol to someone under the age of 18 unless the person supplying the alcohol is the parent or legal guardian and the alcohol is supplied in a responsible manner.

“Parent” means natural, adoptive or foster parent, while “Guardian” means a person who has all the duties, powers, rights and responsibilities that a parent has in bringing up their child, as detailed in the Care of Children Act 2004.

The only other legal ways to supply a minor with alcohol are if you have express consent from their parent or legal guardian; or the young person is married, in a civil union or living with a de facto partner.

Express consent may include a personal conversation, an email or a text message that you have good reason to believe is genuine.

Paul Radich, Countdown’s alcohol responsibility manager, said the supermarket policy is that where there’s a person in a group who looks under 25, and staff have reason to believe alcohol is going to be supplied to a minor, they reserve the right to ask for ID or to refuse the sale.

“Our team has to make a lot of judgment calls every day and we’re always trying to get the right balance between adhering to the law and making sure customers can safely access the products they want at our stores,” he said.

On the other side of Auckland, in Silverdale, 64-year-old Mark Burt was denied alcohol while shopping with his 27-year-old boarder. “He pushed the trolley into the counter and was putting the goods, including wine and

beer, on to the conveyor ... when the supervisor then approached [him] asking for ID,” Burt said.

“He is from Colombia and admittedly looks a little younger than his 27 years and said he didn’t have it on him. I stated that he is 27 years old and actually does not drink, smoke or do drugs of any kind.

“The supervisor then said they would not sell alcohol to us. I stated that it was purely for me. ‘Not good enough’ she said! I saw red!”

The boarder was advised he needed to carry a passport, so the pair decided to leave the supermarket without their $270 worth of shopping.

Supermarket liquor ruling an ass N

ew Zealand’s current alcohol selling practices came under the spotlight this week through pure chance after a rather forgettable shopping experience for one Kiwi this week.

A mother was stopped purchasing alcohol at the supermarket because she had her children with her.

The mother had no problems with her shopping experience at a Countdown store in Northcote last Saturday until it came time for a bottle of wine which was in the middle of her groceries was swiped through the checkout.

She was then asked to prove that the bottle of wine was for her and not for the children who were accompanying her.

Understandably she couldn’t

prove that it was only for her – how could anyone? – so she left the store, without her bottle of wine, but with a pretty sour taste in her mouth.

That lone story has brought forward hundreds of others like it – all detailing similar experiences, including a local mother who, while shopping with her 10-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter, was refused service on two bottles of wine from the

supermarket for the very same reasons.

There’s a couple of major concerns here – that actually pull right at the very heart strings of everyday New Zealanders.

One is the instant inference and judgement that we are bad people and that because we actually enjoy a glass of wine with our dinner at night time, we are automatically actually supplying that very same alcohol to minors.

But the major concern is that a parent can’t purchase a bottle of wine in amongst their grocery shopping.

I’ll never admit to spending much time at the supermarket, I like to get in and out of there as quickly as I possibly can, but every time I do stick my head in

the door I’m usually met with parents, mainly mothers, battling with children who want to buy something from the lolly aisle, or screaming because they don’t like that new healthy version of breakfast cereal.

So, the question begs, if you’re going to put that kind of questioning towards parents, what’s the point in selling alcohol in the first place?

Some will question whether this needs to be brought to the public attention through the media, but it actually is a subject that is worth talking about.

How many of you would be frustrated if, while purchasing your vegetables and fruit for the week, decided on a few beers or a bottle of wine to take home

as well only to be refused when you got to the checkout because you’ve got your son or daughter with you?

I know I’d be fuming.

There’s not much point in blaming the supermarket though, after all they’re only doing what they are told to do by the liquor licence laws enforcement team who seem hell-bent on actually ensuring that no one is allowed to enjoy a drink without frustration.

There might be a bit of an issue in this country with alcohol at times, there’s no real hiding from that fact – but you’d struggle to find the root of those problems standing in the line at the supermarket with a full trolley of groceries in front of them.

While Jacinda’s away how are the mice getting on?

e facto PM, The Right Honourable, Winston Peters, has begun his time at the top in suitably Churchillian manner.

In an approach strongly reminiscent of the inspirational leader and unconquerable warrior, (after whom he is named) he has taken on the Australian PM, the elegant, highly-heeled, Malcolm Turnbull, over the little matter of a young New Zealander incarcerated in an adult Melbourne jail since March.

The crime the boy committed was of a minor, non-violent nature, but as an “immigrant” almost from birth he is a victim of Australia’s cruel attitude to such people.

Our acting PM has bravely accused the Aussies of breaking international protocol regarding the Rights of the Child and called for the youngster’s instant release into the arms of his parents.

Australia’s bullet-headed Minister of Home Affairs, the ultra aggressive, Peter Dutton, will not have a bar of such an argument and claims, mysteriously, that Australian national security is at stake.

So, Winston is standing foursquare behind an ill-used young Kiwi. Well done, Winnie; shame on you Malcolm. Remember Warner and Smith.

Not all the mice are faring as well. For example, Chris “Hoppy” Hipkins is having to face the full fury of 50 secondary school principals over his determination to find an alternative to our current education system, of which NCEA is the lynchpin.

are describing as, “a mere four months”, consultation period, has put academic noses out of joint and raised bushy eyebrows to new heights. Many of the irate pedagogues seem particularly incensed by what they claim is the pejorative sense in which “Hippy” has used the word “traditional” in his thrust for change.

“Hippy” has, thus, hurriedly, had to issue a “correction” saying there is nothing wrong with traditional methods but he is keen also to look at more modern systems of learning. The Sunday Star Times was the newspaper to benefit from the full-page advertisement in which the academic fraternity expressed its displeasure with the minister.

Since the very public clash of minds, Hipkins has made several significant attempts to put out the fire before it gets entirely out of hand so has shown a worthy degree of calm as well as a determination not to be blown off course. (A hitherto always “reliable source” in the Ministry of Education has informed me that Hippy has always had a love of metaphors so I thought now might be the moment to pander to it!)

And then there’s dear old Phil “Bubbles” Twyford; his problem – as it has been for other Housing Ministers who have sat in his chair before him – is that

the dreaded word, “affordable” means so many different things to so many different people.

Therefore Phil’s dilemma involves his generous income cap for the new houses, which will make them available to genuinely well-off people who never thought they would come within cooee of a governmentsubsidised house. Thus, those “in poverty” are hardly dancing in the streets at the prospect of finding an “affordable” dwelling they can actually afford.

What’s more, while demand continues to outstrip supply – and is likely to continue so doing for some little while yet – the poor – whom, we are told in the Bible are “always with us” – will remain in that condition. To give him his due, Phil’s daily demeanour is one of confidence and joviality which can wash off on the media men and women whom he often finds himself addressing.

From time to time, though, his irrepressible enthusiasm can run away with him and he suddenly realises he is a statistic – or two – short of a policy and has to rely on the intervention of a wide-awake aide, who supplies instantly – seamlessly really – the numbers his master needs.

I guess Jacinda is moderately pleased with the efforts of her two colleagues discussed above but will, nevertheless, be unimpressed by headlines such as, “Why Twyford is letting the rich buy KiwiBuild homes”. Some on-the-mat explanation will be needed there.

Meanwhile, Kelvin Davis is finding the physical proximity of the microphone difficult to handle. His confidence seems to

shrink in the face of this unforgiving piece of technology which, in turn, leads to his forgetting his words and even, one sometimes feels, where he actually is.

It would be a good idea if Labour’s back-up boffins put Kelvin through a crash, presentation course which might help him to lose his fear.

Back at home base, Jacinda may be wincing at the activities of “Bull in the Proverbial” Shane Jones, but that has been the experience of leaders down the ages who have had even a passing relationship with this “Get off the Couch”, Jumbo politician.

He means well but leaves few prisoners when achieving his ambitious goals. Jacinda will, no doubt, have him eating out of her hand when she returns with the First Baby.

Finally, the earnest James Shaw – and other Greens – are doing the hard yards to counter the ravages of climate change both here and world-wide.

One can’t help wondering – in secret – whether the threatened dire consequences of climate change might turn out to be as inconsequential as the “contamination” of homes suffered through the use of methamphetamine within their walls. How much simpler that would be.

This story “to be continued “ as the months go by and the next election approaches.

Great to see good news take centre stage

D

isaster, violence, tragedy, abuse, loss and grief.

These seem to be the headlines that sell papers, catch attention on the TV and ramp up the number of views on social media.

It made a nice change yesterday to see good news take centre stage. Twelve boys and their football coach found alive in the Thai cave. Hungry and weak it was marvellous to see how well they had survived.

Their difficulties are not over yet, with some real challenges facing the rescuers as they seek to establish the best way to get them out. Forecasted heavy rain,

muddy waters and narrow passages won’t make it easy. Still, there is rejoicing that what was appearing to be a total disaster has turned out to be a discovery of hope.

Good news can be seen most clearly against a backdrop of bad news. The contrast is striking.

It is the same with the original Good News. That is, the really Good News against the backdrop of the really Bad News.

The Bad News is that people are lost and in danger. Lost because they are separated from God who is light and life. In danger because the consequences of staying lost is death.

The Good News is that a rescue mission has been undertaken.

God has sent the ultimate rescuer – His own Son Jesus. It cost an awful lot – not money, but in order to achieve a successful rescue, the rescuer had to sacrifice his own life to rescue those who are lost.

What makes the Good News really good, is that no one is too lost to be rescued. Better still, the rescue isn’t something you

have to deserve, or even work for. It comes as a gift. Mind you, as a gift it has to be received.

That is what faith is about – not wishful thinking, but trusting in Jesus Christ to save you from the lostness of your sin and all the consequences it brings. When the Rescuer holds out his hand – would you turn away or take it thankfully, trusting in Him to bring you home?

Support for reigniting Mid Canterbury farmers, environmentalists and politicians are open to renewed debate on New Zealand using genetic modification (GM) in crops and livestock. Susan Sandys reports.

t is time for New Zealand to restart the debate on GM, says the Prime Minister’s former science adviser Sir Peter Gluckman.

Sir Peter told TVNZ’s Q + A this week that the science “s as settled as it will be. “That is, it’s safe, that there are no significant ecological or health concerns associated with the use of advanced genetic technologies”.

It had been almost 20 years since there had been nationwide debate on gene-editing technologies which could help New Zealand become predator free and fight the environmental impact of greenhouse gases and declined water quality.

Sir Peter’s call follows the release of a persuasive book, Seeds of Science, supporting GM crops, by former anti-GM fanatic and British journalist Mark Lynas.

Lynas now supports the weight of scientific opinion which suggests GM is not only safe, but can also help save the environment by cutting back on pesticides and feed the world by increasing food production.

Speaking to Radio New Zealand last month, Lynas said rejecting GMO based on the basis of a gut feeling was foolish.

“You might as well go back to believing in witchcraft … In Australia and New Zealand, you even have policy based on these anti-science fears,” he said.

“It’s almost like the Greens are on the same side as climate change deniers when it comes to the GMO issue.”

However, the New Zealand Government has no plans to change the country’s precautionary approach. And Labour’s confidence and supply partner, the Green Party, is against the use of gene testing for pest control.

For instance, Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage, a Green MP, has forbidden the use of

genetic modification or geneediting as part of the goal to wipe out predators by 2050.

Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers’ president Michael Salvesen said New Zealanders should “keep talking” when it comes to using GM. He referred to the potential benefits of modifying genes, exemplified by Roslin Institute researchers removing a small section of one gene responsible for enabling infection with the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus. The virus causes breathing problems and deaths in young animals, and costs the pig industry billions in lost revenue.

“So there’s all sorts of clever stuff going on around the world, and we should not block ourselves from it,” Salvesen said.

Ashburton environmentalist Edith Smith agreed with Sir Peter that debate should be reignited, however, she supported a precautionary approach, particularly around the potential for GM to lend itself to large corporations gaining monopolies on food technologies.

New Zealand had a trade advantage by being GM-free at the moment, Smith said.

Some arguing for the benefits of GM promoted its use in the development of medicines, however this was an emotive argument and did not relate to using GM in large-scale crop production.

Opposition and Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon said there were clear potential opportunities associated with greater use of genetic modification, and becoming predator free was one of them.

“When National were in Government we gave approval for the development of new cancer treatments using genetic material from goats. It’s appropriate that we continue to assess those sorts of activities that have the potential to help a great number of people,” he said.

At the same time potential risks needed to be mitigated.

“Nobody wants something to get out of the lab that isn’t safe or that would put our primary sector in danger,” Falloon said.

gun The chance to play international rugby awaits Nicole Purdom, but who she pledges her allegiance to is proving a bit of a headache. Erin Tasker caught up with the local lass recently.

W

hat was meant to be a few months’ playing rugby and getting life experience in Ireland has left Nicole Purdom with a massive decision to make.

Purdom, 21, had played rugby since she was five years old and the dream had always been to play for the Black Ferns.

But this week the Ashburton woman will head back to Ireland knowing that if all goes well, she has every chance of running out on to the paddock for Ireland in the next Women’s Rugby World Cup. “But the moment I play for Ireland, I can’t play for New Zealand,” Purdom said.

If she pulled on the green jersey of Ireland, she’d be kissing goodbye to any hope she had of one day playing for the country she’d always call home and it was a decision Purdom wouldn’t be making lightly.

A firm fixture in the Canterbury women’s side in recent seasons, the number eight’s last game in New Zealand was the 2017 Farah Palmer Cup women’s provincial final, where Canterbury claimed their first national title.

A week later, Purdom was on a plane bound for Ireland for what she thought would only be an eightmonth visit to play some rugby and get a taste of what the rest of the world was about.

“I left the week after I graduated from uni and I just went for the life experience, because I always said I wanted to go somewhere overseas and play rugby,” Purdom said.

She had options throughout Europe, but many clubs wanted her there earlier than she could manage. She wanted to finish her sport coaching and management degree at university first, so Ireland was the option that suited her the best, and it turned out to have been the right move.

There she played for the Suttonians club in Dublin and Purdom helped to take them from cellar-dwellers, to a team that was beating teams they weren’t expected to.

“It was amazing, because our team was so bad when I first got there, and by the end of it we had won the competition,” Purdom said.

A young team of players no older than 22, Suttonians earned themselves promotion to division one.

“The girls just needed someone to motivate them and lead them on the field. They didn’t have that leader on the field before I got there and I talk a lot on the field so I basically just told them where to go,” Purdom said.

From there she was asked to play for Leinster – the top Irish side and the equivalent of playing for Canterbury in New Zealand – so after a five-week break in New Zealand, she was this week heading back to start training with the side ahead of their provincial competition starting in September.

Leinster were paying for her to head back over and she’d also been short-listed for a job as the club’s community development officer.

Women’s rugby was booming in Ireland, something that was in part due to the last women’s world cup being held in Ireland.

“It’s crazy. Here in New Zealand there’s one division with eight teams, whereas in Ireland there’s five divisions with like at least 10 teams in each division,” Purdom said.

The numbers were bigger, but the quality of women’s rugby in New Zealand was higher. The only way to bring that level up in Ireland was by attracting better coaches and better players, so Ireland appeared keen to keep hold of Purdom.

She had already been in talks with the Irish women’s coach, Kiwi Adam Griggs, who wanted her to be involved with training and camps with the national side with an eye to the next women’s world cup.

While Purdom had Irish roots, they were too far back for her to qualify to play for Ireland straight away, so she’d have to play three years in Ireland in order to qualify.

“There’s definitely going to be a point later on in my life where I’m going to have to decide where I want to settle,” she said.

New Zealand would always be home, but at the moment, Ireland was where the best opportunities were on offer.

Cave rescue claims life A former Thai Navy SEAL has died during the rescue operation to save 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped inside a flooded cave.

Authorities have confirmed the diver’s death was caused by lack of oxygen, and the man died while making his way out of the cave complex where the group is trapped.

The man has been identified as retired Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Saman Kunan who volunteered for the operation after having left his post.

The rescuer lost consciousness after placing oxygen tanks in the cave and could not be revived despite first-aid attempts by his dive partner.

Authorities say the cave system, Mae Sai, northern Thailand, is losing oxygen as they continue to try and deliver air supplies to the kids and coach through a pipe.

They say the ventilation pipe is urgent.

“It was sad news, a former SEAL who volunteered to help died last night about 2am,” Chiang Rai deputy governor Passakorn Boonyaluck told reporters yesterday. “His job was to deliver oxygen (in the cave).

He did not have enough on his way back.”

Rescuers are working day and night to save the boys before it’s too late, but some may be too weak to complete the terrifying mission.

Two of the boys and their football coach are suffering from exhaustion through malnutrition, which could make it almost impossible for them to attempt the perilous journey, a navy source told CNN. The lack of oxygen and the approaching torrential rains also threaten to derail the risky plan.

They are trapped three kilometres into a system of linked chambers as their frightened families wait at the cave en-

trance. It is believed they may have entered as part of an initiation rite, although two mothers came forward to say they did not blame coach Ekkapol Chantawong for their boys’ desperate circumstances.

The 25-year-old coach and former monk is struggling after selflessly sacrificing his share of food, reported the ABC. But it is still possible he could be charged over the crisis.

Dad found dead after his two teens killed The father of two teens shot dead in their bedrooms has been found dead.

The mother arrived home to find her two children murdered in a suburban Sydney home on Thursday afternoon.

Police had been hunting the 50-year-old father of the children after a boy, 15, and a girl, 13, were killed around 5.20pm last night at the house, in the northwestern Sydney suburb of West Pennant Hills.

However, yesterday NSW police confirmed officers found the suspect dead at a home in Normanhurst, just a few kilometres from the West Pennant Hills address.

Forensic teams and homicide investigators have been combing the home all night for evidence, while the mother is recovering with friends after being treated for severe shock.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden told reporters it appeared to be a “targeted incident” related to domestic violence. He said the victims were found dead by officers called to the “horrific scene” following reports of gunshots.

“It was a very harrowing experience for the emergency services who responded,” he said.

“You’ve got a family that is going to struggle to come to terms with it and emergency responders will struggle to come to terms with what they have seen.”

The victims’ mother, aged in her 30s, arrived at the scene after police and was treated for severe shock.

A man known to the family was on Thursday night being sought as a “person of interest”.

“At this stage, the person of interest we are looking for is still at large but we believe this to be a targeted incident and there are no risks to the com-

munity at this time,” Acting Assistant Commissioner McFadden said.

“It is what can only be described as a tragic set of circumstances for the whole family,” he added.

The mother was being treated by paramedics at the scene more than two hours after the fatal incident, but was later with friends away from the crime scene.

The bloody attack took place in the house on Hull Road, just off the Cumberland Highway.

At the scene on Thursday evening, forensic investigators wearing white protective suits could be seen walking up and down the street with torches and cameras.

About 150m of the road was blocked off, with witches hats stopping cars from entering one end, and uniformed police officers standing guard on both. Some residents who lived in the exclusion zone were escorted back inside their houses upon arriving late to the horror that, on this occasion, had come too close to home.

Fireworks blasts claim 24 lives First a horrific blast rocked the town of Tultepec, a place already notorious for deadly fireworks accidents, and emergency workers rushed in to rescue the injured.

Then, 20 minutes later, a new series of other explosions erupted around them, killing at least four firefighters, two police officers and a civil defence worker. In all, at least 24 people died and at least 49 were injured, according to the government of the State of Mexico.

“They wanted to save lives without knowing that the same thing was going to happen to them,” said Teresa Gonzalez, who heard the nearby blasts that began at 9.40am.

Tultepec, a municipality of about 130,000 people roughly an hour’s drive north of Mexico City, is famed for small workshops that produce many of the fireworks used throughout the region – and for repeated accidents that have killed at least 70 people in less than two years.

Search for survivors Thailand navy divers prepared yesterday to search for 56 mostly Chinese tourists missing after a storm capsized their diving boat off the resort island of Phuket. The commander of Phuket Provincial Police, Teerapol Tipcharoen, said the sea had calmed since Thursday evening’s accident and the search was ongoing. A navy deputy commander, Charoenpol Kumrasri, said they hope survivors can be found in the boat, which sits about 30 metres below the surface. He said about 30 navy divers would be sent to take part.

Heatwave kills 33 in Quebec Health authorities in the Canadian province of Quebec said yesterday that 33 people have died from heat-related complications in the last few days.

Eighteen of those deaths have come in Montreal, where humid temperatures climbed past 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius).

Many of the victims were men over the age of 50 living alone in private apartments and seniors’ residences, according to Dr. David Kaiser with Montreal’s public health department. None of the victims had air conditioning and Kaiser said most of them died inside of their homes.

“It’s not surprising,” he said. “Heat risk in an urban setting is a combination of medical, social and environmental exposures. The elderly, people with chronic

diseases and people with mental health problems are more at risk.”

Kaiser said the social aspect – living alone and not having another place to go to cool down – typically plays a major role in heat-related deaths in the city.

“Montreal is a gigantic heat island,” he said, referring to an environmental phenomenon caused by a lack of vegetation and an abundance of concrete. There are also micro heat islands throughout the city, particularly in some of the poorer areas, he added.

This, too, played a factor in the current heat wave, which began June 29.

Heat warnings were in effect across southern Quebec, Ontario and the Atlantic region of the country, but temperatures were expected to drop overnight.

Cult leaders, followers executed Doomsday cult leader Shoko Asahara and six of his followers were executed yesterday for their roles in a deadly 1995 gas attack on the Tokyo subways and other crimes, Japan’s Justice Ministry said.

The hanging of Asahara, 63, closes a chapter on one of Japan’s most shocking crimes in the 20th century. During the morning rush hour of March 20, 1995, members of the his Aum Shinrikyo cult punctured plastic bags to release sarin nerve gas inside subway cars, killing 13 people and sickening more than 6000.

“This gave me a piece of mind,” Kiyoe Iwata, who lost her daughter in the subway attack, told Japanese broadcaster NHK. “I have always been wondering why it had to be my daughter and why she had to be killed. Now, I can pay a visit to her grave and tell her of this.”

Asahara and five of the six executed were

implicated in the subway attack. The cult also carried out other crimes that together with the subway attack killed 27 people in total. Six other followers remain on death row.

The others hanged yesterday included two scientists who led the production of the sarin gas and one of the men who carried carried out the actual attack on the subway.

Asahara, whose original name was Chizuo Matsumoto, founded Aum Shinrikyo, or Supreme Truth, in 1984. The cult attracted many young people, even graduates of top universities, some of whom Asahara hand-picked as close aides.

The group amassed an arsenal of chemical, biological and conventional weapons to carry out Asahara’s escalating criminal orders in anticipation of an apocalyptic showdown with the government.

Human remains have been discovered in the Toronto ravine behind a home that alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur used as storage for his landscaping business. Detective Sgt. Hank Idsinga told reporters the remains were found with the help of K-9 units and have been sent to forensic authorities. “We haven’t identified what the remains are or who they belonged to,” Idsinga said. The 66-year-old McArthur is accused of killing eight men.

Police have found the remains of seven of the men inside planters at the property. McArthur is believed to have targeted men he met on gay dating apps. Police have searched more than 100 sites throughout the city.

China vows to counter-attack President Donald Trump has pulled the trigger on a trade war with China – which immediately plans to launch a counter-attack.

Yesterday, tariffs of $US34 billion came in to force on Chinese goods.

Beijing immediately vowed to retaliate – without being specific about its response.

China is expected to hit back with taxes on an equal amount of US products, including soybeans, lobsters, sport-utility vehicles and whiskey.

Earlier Trump upped his threat to go further – saying he’d target up to $US500 billion of Chinese goods if they do retaliate.

Trump said the US is ready to target an additional $US200 billion in Chinese imports – and then $US300 billion more – if Beijing refuses to yield to US demands and continues to retaliate.

That would bring the total of targeted Chinese goods to potentially $US550 billion – more than the $US506 billion in goods that China actually shipped to the United States last year.

While China has signalled a willingness to buy more American goods to balance out the deficit, it has refused to trade away what it views as an essential part of its economic future.

Adding to concerns this week was a leaked report suggesting Trump had asked his officials to look at pulling the US out of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) altogether.

“This discussion is very worrying,” Jacobi said. “To depart from the WTO would be a shocking blow to the global economy.”

Pulling out of the WTO was not something a president could do unilaterally and any move would require approval from the US congress.

But it was a worrying signal, Jacobi sad.

“And signals matter.”

The US was already undermining the WTO’s trade disputes process by stalling on the appointment of new judges, he said.

That was system that small countries like New Zealand relied to resolve issues of trade conflict.

“Generally speaking we’re not going to get caught up in the tariffs the US is applying to China because we have a different export profile,” said Jacobi, who is executive director of the NZ International Business Forum.

But if the scope of the tariffs widened then New Zealand could be affected – either through intermediary goods sold into the US or China for further processing or because markets were disrupted more broadly.

Perversely if China’s retaliation included tariffs on US dairy, meat and wine then we could actually get a bit of a trade boost.

Longer term though a trade war posed a risk to the recovery of the whole global economy, he said.

“We want more trade, more business, more investment to be done.”

Bloomberg news reports that talks to avoid a trade war have stalled in part over US demands that China reduce state support for high-tech industries.

New Zealand’s benchmark stock index rose to a record, with Fletcher Building and Sky Network Television gaining while Scales and NZX dropped.

The S&P/NZX 50 Index gained 21.19 points, or 0.2 per cent, to an all-time high of 9,084.04.

Within the index, 22 stocks rose, 18 fell and 10 were unchanged.

Turnover was $108.4 million.

“The market is pretty flat on light volume as a few participants start to head off on holiday,” said Shane Solly, director, portfolio manager & research analyst at Harbour Asset Management.

“We do see a relatively strong global economy in the scheme of things, and the New Zealand economy is strong even though it’s slowing – we need to be careful about getting too negative about the series of events that’s out there.”

“Our market has been globally strong, and we’ve seen a lot of capital come in, and we seem to have paused – there’s nothing unusual or wrong about that,” he said. Fletcher rose 3.4 per cent to $7.08. The embattled stock is

Scales Corp was the worst performer, down 2.1 per cent to $4.70. NZX fell 1.8 per cent to $1.11 and Restaurant Brands New Zealand declined 1.3 per cent to $7.73.

Top chef sentenced to home detention Top Christchurch restaurateur Jonny Schwass will serve six months’ home detention for using his employees’ tax payments to keep his business afloat.

Schwass has been in the restaurant trade for decades and has won numerous awards, including being named Cuisine magazine’s Restaurant Personality of The Year in 2011.

But IRD said that Schwass failed to pay it $265,689 in tax,

child support, student loan and KiwiSaver deductions.

He was sentenced to home detention in Christchurch District Court yesterday.

Schwass had used the money to pay creditors in order to keep trading, Inland Revenue spokesman Tony Morris said.

“Mr Schwass was effectively using money that should have gone towards paying for important social services as a free loan

to keep his business afloat,” Morris said.

“That’s completely unacceptable – the money employers deduct from staff wages is held in trust on behalf of the Crown. It’s not theirs to use, because it belongs to taxpayers.”

Schwass was also ordered to pay $130,000 in reparation, including $13,870 to his former employees’ KiwiSaver accounts.

Heat the oil in a non-stick frypan and add 2 tablespoons of batter for each fritter.

Cook for 2 minutes each side or until golden brown and cooked through.

Drain on paper towel.

Repeat until all the batter is used.

■ Heat the butter in a non-stick frypan until foaming.

Women’s seedings decimated Garbine Muguruza insisted she wasn’t thinking about attempting to collect a second consecutive Wimbledon championship.

She was adamant that she was not focusing on defending her title.

“It doesn’t really matter,” she said, “what happened in 2017.”

Well, it seems safe to say she’ll really want to forget what happened at the All England Club in 2018.

Muguruza was stunned in the second round 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 by 47th-ranked Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium, the latest upset in a series of them at the grass-court major tournament.

“It’s a little bit sad,” Muguruza said. “But today didn’t go my way.”

That’s become a familiar refrain for prominent women at this topsy-turvy Wimbledon.

Only two of the top eight seeded women are still in the field after four days of action.

Van Uytvanck, meanwhile, began this week with a 1-4 record at Wimbledon and only one Grand Slam quarter-final appearance to her name.

Muguruza, meanwhile, owns two major titles, including the 2016 French Open, and was the runner-up at the All England Club in 2015.

But that didn’t matter on this

day. Van Uytvanck was aggressive from the baseline, compiling a 29-18 advantage in winners, and broke in seven of Muguruza’s 13 service games.

Still, it was not easy finishing off the most significant victory of her career.

“Inside,” the 24-year-old Belgian said, “I was, like, dying.”

The No. 3-seeded Muguruza joined No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki, No. 4 Sloane Stephens, No. 5 Elina Svitolina, No. 6 Caroline Garcia and No. 8 Petra Kvitova on the way out so far, along with five-time major champion Maria Sharapova.

Those departures leave No. 1

Simona Halep, the French Open champion who won in straight sets yesterday, and No. 7 Karolina Pliskova in the field, along with seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams, who is seeded 25th, and five-time champ Venus Williams, who is No. 9.

In brief Wilding victory A young Mid Canterbury tennis team has taken out the Canterbury Tennis Wilding Challenge competition. For players aged 10 and under, the Wilding Challenge has been running for seven years and sees teams from around Canterbury compete during the second school term. This year there were five teams playing in a round robin format with the top two then playing off in a final. Mid Canterbury’s team called Murray made the final of the competition late last month and beat a team called Williams (from the Southern region) to take it out 7-5. The team was Wynter Copland, Jake Parsons, Joshua Gilbert and Drew Gilbert, while the development coaches for the seven-weekend event were Rubin McNab and Jack Tiller, while the young Murray team was coached by Mid Canterbury Tennis head coach Andre van Rooyen.

Lowndes to retire Supercars veteran Craig Lowndes’ decision to announce his retirement from full time driving has surprised some of his greatest rivals. The six-time Bathurst champion announced yesterday before the Townsville 400 that the 2018 championship would be his 21st and final season of full time racing. The news sparked tributes from across pitlane for the 44-year-old, who claimed his 106th career win earlier this year in Tasmania and is currently fourth in the championship.

Bowlers eye national glory Ashburton bowlers will today head to Geraldine with a shot at national glory on the line in two separate competitions.

The New Zealand Mixed Fours and the New Zealand Mixed Pairs have reached the zone qualifying stage of their respective competitions with the next step the national finals in Wellington later in the season.

Ashburton will have teams in both competitions competing against sides from Canterbury, South Canterbury and North Otago.

Both competitions will be held at the Timaru Town and Country Club with the pairs in the morning and the fours in the afternoon.

Last weekend’s Jim Patterson singles winner, Grant Wilson will combine with Chris Talbot to form a strong combination in the pairs.

In the first two weeks of Mid Canterbury Rugby’s Watters Cup competition, Hampstead have made a statement.

And it’s a statement not many people would’ve expected them to make.

After nine years of failing to pick up a single Watters Cup win, Hampstead came agonisingly close to tipping up Rakaia on Saturday, a week after being competitive for a fair chunk of their game against Celtic.

Hampstead won just two games in the Combined Country Cup, and they came in the final two weeks against fellow cellardwellers Hurunui and Hornby.

But a win was a win, and they gave Hampstead a much needed confidence boost heading into the local competition.

In round one of the Watters Cup, Hampstead started strong against Celtic and were only behind 7-3 at half-time, but their lack of depth off the bench hurt them in the second half and Celtic ran out 29-3 winners.

Round two saw them take on Rakaia, the team that came runners up to Waihora in the combined competition, and even Hampstead coach Shaun Bovey didn’t think his side winning was a realistic possibility.

He just wanted them to build

on what they’d achieved against Celtic the week before.

They did better than that though, leading Rakaia 14-12 with just a minute to go, with Rakaia scoring a try in the last minute of the game to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Bovey said his side had demanded attention and respect in the past couple of weeks, and he could not be prouder.

The feeling in his side’s changing room after their loss to Rakaia was one he had not been expecting.

Bovey wasn’t disappointed – they’d done far better than even he had expected.

“But the boys were just gutted because they could have won it.

“The hurt they felt for that game, you know you’ve got a good team that actually want to win, and want to turn Hampstead around.”

With just Southern and Methven left to play before the finals, Bovey was excited to see what his side could achieve.

Hampstead face Southern today, and having not played them this season yet, Bovey didn’t really know what to expect from them.

But with two wins from two outings so far, and the fact that they won the title last year, he knew Southern were going to be another tough ask.

“You’re never ever going to take the Watters Cup champions lightly are you? Especially when you’re the team that hasn’t won a game in nine years and two weeks,” Bovey said.

But the past couple of weeks have shown that other teams shouldn’t take them lightly, either.

A couple of weeks ago, Hampstead’s focus had been on defence and trying to keep other teams out.

But against Rakaia on Saturday they also showed they had a bit to offer on attack, so they’d be keen to test out Southern’s defence on Saturday.

Southern had recovered from the disappointment of narrowly missing out on the combined competition finals, and proven to be the form team of the Watters Cup so far, but their coach Andrew Carr said there was still work to be done.

Carr said the key to his side’s success was minimising mistakes. In the past two weeks his side had started well, but let the opposition back in.

“We are just going out to win it. We are going to play to our strengths,” Carr said.

“Obviously we respect every team and obviously Hampstead have been the big improvers.

“Just because they haven’t won a Watters Cup game in nine

years … we’ve still got to go out there full of respect for them, but focus on the job we have to do.”

Rakaia will also be focusing on the job at hand and moving on from a not-so-good three weeks when they take on Methven in round three.

Rakaia were missing three of their key players – Seta Koroitamana, Nete Caucau and Timoci Nabakeke – against Hampstead but were hoping to have all three back for the Methven game.

But, they would be without another key player, first-five Tom Hanham-Carter, who suffered a potentially season-ending knee injury against Hampstead.

Injuries have also been hampering Methven in recent weeks and they were hopeful a week off with the bye last week would give some of those injuries time to heal.

Methven had just 19 players heading into their round one clash with Southern and had to call up some former senior players from the club’s senior B side to fill some holes.

After a slow start, Methven clawed their way back into that game in the second half and outscored Southern, scoring three ties.

But Southern held on to win.

Celtic have the bye in round three.

Almost a week after hosting the biggest Kiwi basketball attendance ever, when 8431 people packed Spark Arena to watch the MBO Tall Blacks play China, Basketball New Zealand is announcing the next venues for the FIBA World Cup Qualifying series. In co-operation with the Christchurch City Council, the Tall Blacks will play Jordan at Horncastle Arena, Christchurch, on Thursday November 29. Basketball New Zealands Chief Executive, Iain Potter, says the team have been eager to play in Christchurch for some time.

Bangladesh crumbles Bangladesh’s batsmen failed for a second time in the first cricket test against West Indies in North Sound as the home side closed in on a three-day victory. The tourists ended day two on Thursday on 6-62 in 18 overs – after their firstinnings of 43, the lowest score ever for Bangladesh – to trail West Indies by 301 runs with only four second-innings wickets left.

West Indies resumed on 2-201 and went on to 406 all out, with Kraigg Brathwaite scoring 121.

West Indies had taken complete control after Kemar Roach claimed a remarkable five wickets in 12 balls and Bangladesh posted the second shortest test first innings of all time, lasting just 18.4 overs. - PA

Celtic back on track

Celtic A were back to their clinical best, beating Ashburton College A 35-15 in Mid Canterbury Netball’s ACL premier one competition on Thursday night.

Unbeaten this season, Celtic A were always in control against College A in what was the first game of the third and final round, but the night’s other winners – Mt Somers and Methven A – were made to fight tooth and nail for their results.

Mt Somers had to claw back a big deficit to down the side which beat United A to earn promotion to premier one earlier in the week – Celtic B – while Methven A had to see off a late surge from Hampstead A. Mt Somers snuck home 29-26, while Methven won 29-27.

Of the three wins, Celtic A’s sent the biggest warning to other sides.

They were looking to bounce back from a couple of games where they were really pushed for the first time this season and shot out to a commanding lead early on against College A, leading 7-2 at the first break, and extending that to 17-6 at half-time.

Celtic A’s speed through the court and strong defence made life difficult for the young College side, and by three quarter time the result wasn’t in doubt, with Celtic A out to a 27-11 lead, and they won the final quarter 8-4 to seal the deal 35-15.

Celtic A coach Angela Leadley said it was a much more complete performance from her side, compared to the previous couple of weeks.

“We had a strong game on defence, and we were a lot more dominant in our attack, especially in the second half,” Leadley said.

College A coach Kaye Kennedy felt the score didn’t reflect the game.

“I thought we did some really good things.

“We actually created a lot of turnovers but we just couldn’t finish it off,” Kennedy said.

Mt Somers also struggled with finishing off early in their match against Celtic B, and the newest team to premier one capitalised on that and led 12-6 at the first break.

Celtic B contested everything and made it difficult for Mt Somers to get the ball to their tall timber under the hoop, and by halftime they had a seven-goal lead, 18-11.

But in the words of Celtic B’s own coaches Di Ness and Marie Kennedy, the wheels fell off in the second half.

They got rattled and panicked, pushing things that weren’t on, and struggled to get the basics right.

Mt Somers also upped their game on defence, and by three quarter time had clawed their way back into the game, down by just

three 22-19. By mid-way through the final quarter, Mt Somers had drawn level at 23-all and had just hit the lead at 27-26 when one of their players – wing attack Becky Marrett – went down injured.

She hobbled off the court with only 90 seconds remaining, but the late change didn’t hamper them.

Mt Somers captain Kate Oliver said it was good to get back in the winner’s circle.

Mt Somers were the team automatically promoted from premier two after round one and won their first game in premier one against Ashburton College A, but hadn’t won since.

Oliver said she was proud of the way her side fought back, but gave

full credit to Celtic B, who she said played superbly.

The night’s other game followed a similar pattern to that of Mt Somers and Celtic B, with Methven A getting out to a big lead which they then had to defend.

But unlike Mt Somers, Hampstead A couldn’t quite pull it back.

Methven A led 10-6 at quarter time, 18-11 at half-time and still had a good lead at three quarter time, 25-18.

Hampstead A threw everything at them in the final quarter and managed to get back to two before time ran out.

With a couple of players away, Hampstead A pulled a couple of players up from their club’s so-

cial side for the match – Makayla Cromie and Hannah Spence – and coach Janene McDowell put Spence on at goal keep in the second half, adding much needed height to her side.

It was a move which paid off, with Hampstead’s defence picking up a number of tips and turnovers in the second half, but they weren’t always able to turn those turnovers into points at the other end.

“We made hard work of it.

“That was the most bad passes we have ever done in a game,” McDowell said.

Methven coach Marie Firth said that she always knew the Hampstead girls would come back at them, and she was happy her side

had got off to such a good start and were able to hold on in the end.

Both Hampstead A and Celtic B finished close enough to pick up what could end up being vital bonus points from their games.

Down in premier two, the team that was relegated after losing to Celtic B earlier in the week – United A – made a strong start to their premier two campaign, beating Ashburton College B 42-16.

The night’s other games saw Methven B pick up a good win against Rakaia A 32-25 just a couple of days after having to come from seven points down against Allenton A to avoid relegation, while Southern A were too good for Celtic C, winning 43-26.

In brief

■ OPINION

Something different on the telly I have a new favourite TV programme.

Which in is itself is hardly earth-shattering news, even for oneself, as over the years interest tends to wax and wane over such things; such is the nature of the whole process.

The interesting part is that the programme ticks lots of boxes – but boxes that are usually the wrong criteria for must-watching.

It’s American.

That’s usually a red flag/negative right there.

It’s an American talk show.

Double (triple?) negative.

It’s way too long.

The presenters repeat the same subjects, just with slightly different stances.

And it repeats (thrashes) the same ads, a lot.

But, somehow this one snuck under the radar, and it has me, hook line and sinker.

It’s called Get Up!, and you might not even have seen it, perched away on ESPN2, at an hour that only the night owls would recognise as any sort of time for a programme to be beginning, let along one that goes for three hours.

Yes, three hours!

So, who are the people driving

this thing, a thing that has caught my limited attention span so comprehensively?

There’s Mike Greenberg, who I had never heard of, the front man holding things together. He’s been a top sports radio guy for 30 years in the States, and he knows his stuff.

Then there’s Michelle Beadle.

Easy to describe; blonde, sassy, funny, and with brains – think Hayley Holt x 10. Or 20.

That’s not any criticism of Ms Holt; I think she’s built herself up over many years with The Crowd Goes Wild to be a fine sports broadcaster/entertainer (and politician?).

It’s just that Beadle nails it, all the time, fantastically well.

The really sharp-eyed trainspotter will have noted that she turned up in that, er, remarkable movie series Sharknado.

The third cog in the wheel is the most intriguing.

I remember Jalen Rose from his NBA days; he wasn’t quite an All Star, but was right on the fringe of that for many years.

In Kiwi terms he was that brilliant Super Rugby player who couldn’t quite nail down a spot in the ABs – in the NBA that equates to several years pounding the

courts – for $16 million a year.

Rose was one of many explayers who has ventured into the media world, a place where many have foundered, and he could have been just another brash loudmouth who eventually annoyed too many people and sank without a trace.

Wrong, wrong wrong.

This fella is seriously clever, articulate and extremely confident without being over-the-top pushy. He has strong opinions and always backs them up with lucid, well-thought and reasoned arguments – while all the time remaining very much the supercool guy of the trio.

The programme is weighted towards basketball, as it might be with an ex-superstar on the roster, but Beadle knows plenty about the subject too – in the last three weeks I’ve learnt more about the goings-on in the NBA that I have in a lifetime.

I’ve listened with interest to hear Steven Adams’ name mentioned – several times they’ve had in-depth discussions that included OKC, and in three weeks Adams has been mentioned just twice. The second time it was ‘he tries as hard as anyone’.

But there’s more, plenty more, and it has the magic that Sports Cafe once had, and CGW did too for a few years.

It’s all a seismic shift from Sky’s seemingly interminable offerings of more talking heads on rugby shows. For a start you just don’t watch anything that Jeff Wilson is associated with, and then there’s the ones that have recent ex-players shoe-horned into suitand-tie, fed dolly questions they can answer with a barrowload of rugby cliches – yeah, you know who we’re talking about.

Surely even the most die-hard fans must be tiring of that stuff.

So, Greeny, Beadle and Jalen – you take a massively difficult job, talking almost constantly for three hours while keeping your audience consistently engaged, as if we were having a ‘friendly’ (read robust) discussion about sport in our living room and do it with polish and panache.

Love it. Try it!

Thaiday calls time Veteran Brisbane forward Sam Thaiday has announced he will retire at the end of the 2018 season – as only he can. Dressed as an elderly man, Thaiday, 33, called a press conference outside a Brisbane retirement home yesterday to confirm he will draw the curtain on his 16-season career. Thaiday was told

by Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett last year that he did not fit in the Broncos’ future plans.

Boost for local track The Ashburton harness racing training ranks received a big boost this week with strike-rate trainer, Brent White relocating from Temuka to the Ashburton Racecourse.

The winner of over 100 races as a trainer and one of New Zealand’s most renowned trainers for turning a horse’s form around, White’s addition to the local scene is a welcome boost with a dwindling number of horse trainers residing in the Mid Canterbury region compared to the golden days of years gone by.

White signed off on his time as a South Canterbury trainer with a local victory last Sunday at Timaru when Tokyo Joe was victorious – his final act before packing everything up and trekking it 45 minutes up the road.

It’s been a lengthy process just to get to this point, with his Temuka property taking its time to sell, but White is excited to get things going from new quarters.

“Both myself and my partner, Alanna have family in the Ashburton area, so it makes sense to be here closer to them,” White said.

“Temuka has been very good to me though, we’ve trained a lot of winners from there – but I just felt like we needed to be a bit more central to everything and when the opportunity came up to rent at the Ashburton Racecourse, it was too good to resist.”

Initially the plan is to have close to 20 boxes rented at the

racecourse to ensure that things don’t get too out of control and White can look at focusing on a quality team when the new season rolls around – but he’s never shy about the hope of picking up new owners too.

“That possibility is always there, and I’d never say no to anyone unless there was a pretty good reason,” he said.

“Ashburton, the track, should be good for us.

“Things got really wet down in Temuka and having to do the

during the summer months.

“We seem to be able to start with a hiss and a roar and tick the winners up through the winter and into the spring, but really struggle with things during the summer months.

“I don’t know if the feed buckets are too big for that time of the year, or what, but we will be looking at that next season.

“Last season I had 29 and that was just fantastic, this year we might struggle to get to 20, but I’m not complaining.

I’m not exactly sure I know what I’m doing most of the time anyway, so we should be all right

maintenance on the track as well as train the horses was a big job.

“We are sort of going to be learning as we go a bit with a new environment, but I’m not exactly sure I know what I’m doing most of the time anyway, so we should be all right.”

With 18 winners on the board for the season, it’s been another good 12 months for White on the track.

But he also knows it could have been better and has taken some key learnings this time around about what he’s doing

“It’s still been good.”

Sunday’s winner, Tokyo Joe, could be the horse to ensure that White does get close to that 20win mark before the end of the month.

He was rather impressive winning his maiden on Sunday in the hands of Stephen McNally, but is still very much the raw product.

“I like him, I like him a lot – but he’s got a bit of developing and things to do.

“He’s not quite fluent in the back yet, but he’s doing a lot on raw talent.

“Stephen said he could have gone past them on Sunday if he’d wanted too, but he was just as happy nursing him to the line and letting him get there himself.”

A three-year-old gelding by under-rated trotting sire The Pres, Tokyo Joe is the third foal of unraced mare, Friecynet.

A Continentalman mare, she was the final foal of handy broodmare, Eve’s Temptation who left multiple race winners including Adam’s First who won three for Methven trainer, Carl Markham.

While he was rapt with the winner, White was smiling about the effort of stablemate, Rogie Falls who finished third in the same race and is owned by Ashburton locals, Dave and Gaye Luke.

“He’s a very good horse I think, but he too has a lot to learn.

“At the moment he’s got a lot of weight on in front and I think experience is going to be key with him.

“He’s good enough to win one quickly though.”

One of the highlights of the past 12 months for White came with One Apollo’s victory in the Listed Yearling Sales 2YO Trot – White’s biggest win as a trainer.

The son of One Over Da Moon is still in the paddock for another month and will be given a slow and gradual build up with a view to resuming racing around Christmas time to prepare for the rich three-year-old features on offer.

Tarissa Mitchell has enjoyed past success at Riccarton with her boutique team and she is making plans for a permanent move south.

The Cambridge horsewoman has had discussions with the Canterbury Jockey Club about the availability of stables and is hopeful of relocating in the spring.

“I’ve spoken with (chief executive) Tim Mills about stabling and I’ve been looking at properties as well,” Mitchell said.

“I haven’t sold my own place yet, a few people have been looking privately so there’s no rush at this stage.

“Hopefully, we can be there around September.

“I enjoy it down there and we feel it is the right thing to do.

“My partner Carl is a builder and he’s from Christchurch.”

Mitchell had made her mark at Riccarton, producing Irish Call to win four races there and Call Me Royal has also been successful on the South Island’s premier course.

The stablemates will make the move later in the year with the former about to return to work while Call Me Royal stepped out over ground for the first time this preparation at Hastings last Saturday and dead-heated for second in the open handicap.

“He went really well and he’s a great stayer,” Mitchell said.

“We targeted the New Zealand Cup with him last year, but it didn’t go to plan.

“The tracks were a bit firm and he’s had a tendon issue.”

Going one better than Call Me Royal at Hawke’s Bay was Akoya Pearl, who provided Mitchell with a memorable result as she also co-bred and owns the Civics filly.

“It’s special when you’ve had them for so long,” she said.

“I was going to turn her out for three weeks and get her ready for Cup week at Riccarton, but she’s bouncing around so we might carry on.”

A work in progress Brendon Hill knows he’s still in ‘bonus time’ with promising pacer Cullenburn, but he also knows it’s time for the well-bred three-year-old to stand up and be counted.

The brother to former open class star Locharburn made relatively light work of his resuming run at Addington on Thursday night, winning in the hands of Tim Williams.

And, while winning is always nice, especially when you are carrying the weight of money he did, for Hill the biggest success came after the race.

“Plugs still in, not taxed at all and did it under his own steam, perfect,” Hill said yesterday.

“I gave him a pretty hard run at the trials and he probably didn’t need that first up so it was good to see he did it pretty easily.

“He loves being in front and rolling along, that’s really his go.”

Hill has forever said that the best of the son of Christian Cullen won’t come until he’s four, but there’s enough in there at the moment to suggest that they can put a bit more pressure on his big frame and that means he will return to Addington next week for a heat of the Australasian Breeders Crown.

The heat will feature Think About Me, so it is going to be no walk in the park, but Hill is keen to get the win to ensure the trip across the Tasman is as stress free as possible.

“Winning next week is the difference between racing three times and only racing twice as well as being over there for an extra 10 days, so there’s a bit of importance on it.

“At the end of the day, it’s not the be all and end all of it, but it

would give us that little bit more breathing room to work with.”

A big-figure purchase by Ian Dobson as a yearling, Cullenburn was good enough to finish third in the Sires’ Stakes Final on Cup Day, so the rigours of Group One racing should prove to be no problem for him.

The colt will have the next couple of days off before preparing for next week’s assignment and Hill is excited about the future, even further ahead that Australia.

“Give him another 12 months and he’s going to be an even better horse, I think.

“I’ve always said that.

“Right now, though, he’s going great so we have to make the most of that.”

Cullenburn was one half of a winning double for Williams on Thursday night with Cash N Flow winning the feature pacing event later in the night as well for Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen.
