Charlottes meet Olivias meet Oliver Olivia and Oliver have topped the Kiwi baby name sweepstakes for the second year running. The Department of Internal Affairs released the official list of top 100 names for girls and boys born last year yesterday and traditional names remained favourites. Charlotte and Jack also retained their places on the ladder, coming in at number two for the second time. Similarly, William held on to the third spot for the top boys’

names. Leo enjoyed a resurgence jumping 15 rungs up the ladder to number nine this year. On the girls’ list Isla came in third favourite, up from seventh spot last year and bumping Harper, Emily and Ella down the list. Ava made the top 10 for the first time, coming in at number nine. Ashburton mother Tania Lebiedieva chose Olivia for her daughter’s name. “We have chosen this name

because it sounds lovely and very feminine,” she said. “We believe that the name influences the character and life of the person, and all the Olivias who I know in person are smart and lovely people, so I believe that it’s a great name for our little girl.” Olivia and Oliver were also the favourite names in the UK, however while Oliver held the number one spot in Australia the feminine version of the name was bumped off by Charlotte.

Two shot at with a BB gun; youths apprehended BY MICHELLE NELSON

Two teenage boys have reported being shot at with a BB gun in the Ashburton riverbed yesterday. A number of police officers responded to the allegation at about 2.15pm. The officers were observed speaking to several youths on the northern bank adjacent to the bridge. One of the boys who was shot at told the Guardian he and four

friends were at the river when they observed a group of teenage boys carrying what appeared to be a handgun. “They were heading toward the endangered birds (nesting black billed gulls),” he said. Three of his friends left the scene on bikes, while he and another mate walked away on foot. Through a clearing in the trees they saw one of the other group raise what appeared to be a nine millimetre pistol.

“He aimed it at us and fired three times,” the boy said. “It (the gun) looked very realistic.” The two boys ducked down and hastily left the area via another track back to the main road and called police. While they calmed down on discovering it was in fact a pellet gun, they were afraid during the incident. “I’ve never been shot at before – it was quite scary at the time.”

There were also reports of a fire having been lit in the area and Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade dispatched an appliance to the scene. Police confirmed the matter was under investigation but could provide no further details. It was the second such incident in recent weeks. Two weeks ago police and ambulance officers dealt with an incident in the Ashburton Domain, in which a child was alleged to have shot a man in

the eye using a plastic soft air gun. Ashburton police attended an incident in Methven at around the same time yesterday. Soon after emergency services were dispatched to a three-vehicle collision on the Rakaia Overbridge. No one was injured, however the road was temporarily closed while tow trucks removed the vehicles and road cleared of debris. Motorists experienced delays until the road reopened at 4pm.

One of the busiest places in Ashburton after the new year break has been the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park. Celebrations over the Christmas and New Year period meant there has been a steady stream of customers dropping off empty bottles at the facility. In December the resource park shipped out 169 tonnes of glass and just days into January it has already collected about another 80 tonnes. Ashburton has a long history of proactive glass recycling, says recycling expert Sheryl Stivens. The district was the first in the South Island to take part in bottle to bottle recycling, a process where glass is used again in the

production of glass products. This is a far more environmentally friendly and efficient process than just using raw materials, making it one of the most sustainable products in the world, Stivens said. The glass is sorted into different colours to be sent away and processed. It is important also that there are no contaminants in the glass as it may be rejected when it reaches the Auckland processing facility, she said. Items such as light bulbs and glass kitchenware have different chemicals in them that make them unsuitable for the bottle to bottle process. Ashburton has one of the highest recycle counts in the world, Stivens said.

Shocking act of animal cruelty Merger highlights By michelle NelsoN

Visitors and residents at Hakatere Beach witnessed a shocking act of animal cruelty this week. Two young men, described as in their mid-twenties, rounded up a number of Canada geese at the lagoon and proceeded to stone the birds, leaving several dead. Wakanui Beach resident Molly Blain said the culprits rode offroad bikes along the coast from Wakanui Beach down to the Hakatere settlement on Thursday. At least four people witnessed the attack and attempted to get the men to stop torturing the

birds. A number of photos were taken and police notified. Blain said one of the men wore a lime green helmet and shorts and the other wore a black helmet and black clothes. She thinks they may be local to the coastal area and wants people to report them to avoid a repeat. According to the Department of Conservation Canada geese are not protected and can be killed year-round without the need for a game licence. While hunters are not required to comply with game hunting regulations such as having to shoot while the bird is in flight, killing must be done humanely.

Mid Canterbury SPCA inspector John Keeley said stoning did not fit the description of humane killing under the Animal Welfare Act. He intends to investigate the matter when he returns to Ashburton next week. The geese were killed less than a week after 34 seabirds, including critically endangered black billed gulls, were shot at Ashton Beach. Forest and Bird Ashburton branch president Edith Smith also contacted the Department of Conservation after discovering a black billed gull with an arrow through its body in Timaru last weekend.

permit differences The merger of rural and urban fire services is taking local authorities into new territory when it comes fire permits. Ashburton has merged with South Canterbury to become part of a larger Mid-South Canterbury Fire Authority and already differences in practices are showing between the rural authorities in the new entity, says Ashburton District Council environmental services manager Jane Donaldson. South Canterbury councils have always issued fire permits, but this has not been the practice in Ashburton and it’s one

neither the council nor Federated Farmers wish to engage in, Donaldson said. Rather than following the southern practice, Ashburton will retain the status quo while a round of consultations gets under way on the fire permitting process. One option would be for permit applications to be made online. The council will receive a document outlining issues, with questions on different ways to regulate for fire permitting and will have until January 26 to respond.

Scouting is in Jim Anderson’s blood. His mother was a district cub leader, he joined the organisation as a youngster and it was natural he’d continue that involvement into adulthood, becoming a leader himself. Jim took that one step further and carried his involvement with the organisation on into married life – wife Irene is also involved as a Kea zone leader. When the time came to step back from active involvement in the movement, Jim couldn’t walk away; he’s now the volunteer who ensures the Mania-o-Roto grounds and buildings are kept in tip-top order. Recently his years of dedication were recognised when he was made a life member of the Mania-o-Roto zone. And no one is more embarrassed than Jim at being pushed into the limelight. “I don’t do this for the awards; I do it for the kids. There’s nothing better than when a big, burly guy comes up to you on the street and says ‘remember me’,” he said. Scouting is an organisation that’s stood the test of time and is

as relevant today as it was when it was first founded. It’s about making a difference in kids’ lives, giving them something to work towards and instilling a sense of pride in what they do, Jim said. “You only need to change one life and you’re happy.” Like all good things, playing a key role in the scouting movement has to end. For 67-year-old Jim, work commitments and a lack of time were the two kickers that saw him step down and take over the caretaking and maintenance role for the park. “With the new building it’s used a lot and it’s important things are kept up to scratch.” Receiving a life membership might not sit easily with Jim, but he admits he’s pretty proud to be a recipient. “I didn’t do this for the award though; I do things because I like to do them; if I didn’t want to do it I wouldn’t. That’s my philosophy.” Zone leader Lori Rusbatch described Jim as “a very humble man, a person who does not like to be acknowledged for his service”. “He’s one of the nicest and most genuine people around;

everything he does, he does for the kids.” But when you’ve given decades of your life to the movement, the time comes when you have to

accept a big vote of thanks for your hard work, she said. Jim was involved with the Methven, Allenton and Red Shield scout troops and for many

years was an organiser of the district expedition for senior scouts. He was awarded the Bronze Tiki for services to scouting. Life memberships for the zone are a relatively new affair. The first was awarded in 2011 and Jim is the ninth to earn the honour. There is a national honour system but that’s capped at 50 – someone has to die before a new life member is made. And given that made it difficult to make it on to the honour roll, Ashburton asked permission from the national body to be able to recognise its own heroes at a local level.

Wild West - Auckland s tyle T

here’s something about the smell of New Zealand bush that fires the imagination. A gentle rot of leaves and soil, carried to the nostrils on tendrils of damp air, the scent readily transforms into memories of walks past, and cements the imagery of scenery present. It can transport you up into the hills, to the midst of the rainforest, or even to the outskirts of Auckland. The big smoke may be better known for cafes and traffic jams, but head to the west as far as you can go, along the winding curves of Scenic Drive and you’ll soon find a playground of green, where the scent of bush is spiked with salt, liberally applied by the onshore breeze. From Whatipu in the south to Muriwai in the north, bush frames the west coast beaches – wide expanses of black sand, bordering on the crashing waves of the Tasman Sea. There’s a reason it’s called the ‘wild west’, and in Auckland’s case, the designation has nothing to do with cowboys. The coastline reached international fame when it starred in Jane Campion’s film The Piano, and – more recently – Taylor Swift’s music video Out of the Woods. Black sand beaches such as Piha are favourites with surfers, and no Auckland summer would be complete without a mad dash in jandals across the hot sand into the sea to swim between the flags.

The breakers are refreshing, but the best way to experience the coastline is on foot. The Hillary Trail makes this possible. Named after Sir Ed, the 80km track winds through the Waitakere Ranges, following both beaches and cliff tops along the way. The track can be walked in its entirety, but each segment makes for an ideal day trip, with options to suit anyone from beach strollers to the most strident of hikers. Gannets, kereru, dotterels, and the odd (endangered) native leech are all part of the wildlife mix along the way. By summer the trails offer shaded refuge from the beating sun. A stroll through groves of ferns, nikau, and pohutukawa provides the perfect antidote to the scorching concrete of the city. In winter the routes provide front-seat viewing for the violence of the ocean as it arrives on New Zeakabd shores – standing atop the cliffs, rain and salt mingle and defy gravity as torrents of water are blown up from below by powerful winds. They also offer the opportunity to practice one’s mud-sliding skills – don’t expect to come home clean. Mud, sand, rain, or sun, the wild west coast has ways of making you feel alive in a way that wakes up all the senses. Next time you’re up that way, it’s worth a visit; there’s more to Auckland than initially meets the eye – or nostrils.

iwi scientists are exploring the mysterious role the bugs inside us play in regulating our diet and metabolism, in a new study revealing bacterial changes in diabetes patients who have undergone weight loss surgery. The new project, led by University of Auckland researchers, is part of wider efforts that could potentially point the way to a new generation of probiotics replacing the need for bariatric surgery – one of the few ways severely obese people currently have to achieve longterm weight loss and prevent or recover from type 2 diabetes. In New Zealand, there is a pressing need to tackle diabetes, which has now reached epidemic proportions, with a reported prevalence at seven per cent of Kiwi adults. Today, the most improved chances of diabetes remission are seen in patients receiving two types of bariatric surgery: sleeve gastrectomy, where a portion of the stomach is removed, and gastric bypass surgery, where the small intestine and majority of the stomach is disconnected from the passage of food.

Associate Professor Rinki Murphy But less clear is the underlying influences that surgery has on gut hormones and gut bacteria, which are potentially important mediators of obesity and type 2 diabetes. These microscopic communities, which live inside all of us,

play a crucial role in extracting energy from our diets, stimulating hunger and improving our metabolism. “My work is about looking at the bacteria living inside our gut and find out to what extent and how they signal when we feel

full and what we actually want to eat,” said Associate Professor Rinki Murphy, who is leading the new study. She said this might be seen as a radical concept, as we think we’re in charge of our bodies and decide what we eat. “But if there are bugs living in our intestines, they may actually influence that – and it’s hard to tell because when people radically change their diet, their bacteria changes, but to what extent they can maintain that change in diet may actually be determined to some extent by bacteria already there.” Gaining a clear picture of how bacteria adapted to their new environments after surgery – as well as the dramatically different diet that followed procedures – had been particularly challenging for scientists. But Murphy and her colleagues expected to gain these insights by comparing the results of blood, faecal samples and food records the study’s 114 patients had kept themselves before and after surgery. Being able to pinpoint the genetic functions of different bacterial communities, and expose beneficial ones, could reveal novel probiotics, or open the door to new gut microbiota

transplant strategies for obese patients with type 2 diabetes that could complement, or even replace, surgery. “One of the tantalising concepts is that from this study, we could inform the next generation of probiotics that people might use to supplement their diet and displace some of the obesogenic factors that we have today,” Murphy said. The ultimate hope was to remove the need for weight-loss surgery, although Murphy said there were still many hurdles keeping that from becoming reality. The new study is supported by a $96,000 grant from the Auckland Medical Research Foundation, and by additional funding from the Maurice Wilkins Centre. * People interested in taking part in another study, investigating probiotic and intermittent fasting to prevent type 2 diabetes, can email profast.bcu@ gmail.com. Sport Petanque a

Helping to grow the local petanque community is something that is important for Richard Browne. Being a top player at the national level, he loves the sport and wants to see it grow locally. The MSA has only operated a petanque club for five years but in that time it has grown and performed extremely well. Richard believes that one of the strengths of the local club is that everyone helps to play their part. The club has hosted South Island tournaments as well as Canterbury championships. The club gets a good turnout on their club days, averaging around 20 players in both the summer and the winter, however due to these days being on weekdays it limits the players to mainly retirees.

To help with this a Sunday morning session is run to allow people to play that can’t make it on the weekdays. Richard spreads his petanque time between Ashburton and Christchurch. Playing time in Christchurch is important as it allows him to practice against some of the best in the country. Having already travelled to Christchurch twice this week, the costs can begin to add up. Competing at a high level means not only having to travel for practice but a lot of travelling for competitions as well. “One weekend you can be in Auckland and the next in Alexandra,” said Richard. Once Richard had to catch the midnight flight to Christchurch from Auckland to ensure he could get all the petanque in on the Sunday and still make it to work on the Monday. For a few months in a row last year,

every weekend Richard was competing at events. Not only can the travel be taxing but the actual competing requires a high level of fitness. Socially games are quite relaxed and only three are played, however competition games are considerably more intense and take up a lot of time. Richard once played in a final that lasted for two and half hours. During some competitions players can walk nearly eight kilometres. On top of this Richard crouches down low to take his shots, meaning he is essentially squatting every two minutes which just adds another level to the strain. The mixture in the way the game can played is something Richard loves. He has a great passion for the close, intense competitive games but also loves how it can be played casually while enjoying a glass of wine.

Crisis time for Wellington sevens tournament The national sport has got out the begging bowl to save what used to be a jewel in the crown – the annual Wellington sevens tournament. And Wellington’s deputy mayor Paul Eagle, who is publicly leading a desperate rearguard action, has admitted it was only a matter of time before the media started

reporting that “sales are grim, the event is dead”. “Look, it’s grim reading,” Eagle said, with the two-day tournament just three weeks away. “But I still think there is an opportunity for repositioning the event. I’m not prepared to let it die just yet.” While NZ Rugby owns the tour-

nament, and the city council has drastically reduced its financial commitment, it appears that the local body is leading the fightback. But a once-booming event looks close to broken beyond repair, its mojo gone and the glory days consigned to history. Tickets for the two day extravaganza used to be the hottest ticket

in town, but Stuff reported that by mid-December, only 1300 tickets were sold for the 34,500 stadium. Suggestions the failing tournament might have to be moved or scrapped were met by New Zealand Rugby defiance last year, with the March announcement that it would remain in the capital for three more years even though

the latest tournament was understood to have lost $300,000. Crowds had dropped to 15,000 a day. “I know Wellingtonians have mixed views on it (but) there are Wellingtonians who are saying we don’t want this to die, and that’s the audience I’m trying to tap into,” he said. - NZME

Tech Stags who are currently the cellar-dwellers at the bottom of the points table with just one win from their six matches. Struggling for numbers, there is no doubt that the Tech side have the ability to beat any side on their day but captain Callum Gallagher will be crying out for some dedication from his squad if they are to revitalise their season. Warner hits lightning fifty

Munro ton gets NZ home By DaviD Leggat Buccaneering hitter Colin Munro became just the third New Zealander to hit an international T20 century at Bay Oval in the second match of the series against Bangladesh yesterday. Lefthander Munro joined Brendon McCullum (twice) and Martin Guptill as New Zealanders with a century to their name. He got to his mark off just 52 balls, the equal 12th fastest to his century. Munro struck seven sixes and seven fours in his belligerent innings which propelled New Zealand to 195 for seven, their seventh best T20 total. That was too much for Bangladesh, whose chase got off to a bad start and ended at 148, giving New Zealand a 47-run victory. The win gives New Zealand the T20 series with one match to play, at the same venue, tomorrow. It also extends to 18 the number of matches lost by Bangladesh against New Zealand in all forms in New Zealand. The only resistance came in an entertaining 68-run stand for the fourth wicket in just 6.4 overs from Sabbir Rahman (48) and Soumya Sarkar (39) but that was Bangladesh’s lot.

Colin Munro was in blazing form for the Black Caps yesterday. The innings was highlighted by a spectacular diving catch by Mitchell Santner at long on, running and hurling himself to his right to dismiss Mossadek Hossain. Kane Williamson served up a half tracker and should be buying his young allrounder a meal for his troubles.

It was a bad day for New Zealand wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi. He was out first ball of the match, spearing a catch to backward point, then strained a groin muscle early in Bangladesh’s innings and had to be replaced. Earlier, man of the match Munro and newbie Tom Bruce shared an innings-reviving

stand of 123 in just 11.1 overs after Bangladesh had done a good early job, having won the toss and sent New Zealand in to bat first. It is the second best fourth wicket stand in T20 cricket, behind Glenn Maxwell and David Warner’s 161 against South Africa. New Zealand lost Ronchi, captain Kane Williamson and Corey Anderson in quick order, to be 48 for three. However Munro went on the offensive and found a good ally in the tall, muscular Bruce, who finished on an impressive unbeaten 59 off 39 balls. Bangladesh were unable to stem the run flow and the batsmen went on a tear. At one point, Munro scored 39 runs in just nine balls in the course of the 12th and 13th overs. His century means New Zealand have scored more international T20 hundreds than any other country. Bangladesh’s fielding got ragged as the runs piled on. Fast-medium Rubel Hossain was the most successful of the tourists’ bowlers with three for 37, while Shakib al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman were the pick of the rest. - NZME

Defending champ Price crashes out of Dakar Reigning champion Toby Price is out of the Dakar Rally after suffering a broken leg in a motorcycle crash. The Australian Red Bull racer fell off his motorcycle during the fourth stage and was airlifted to hospital before being diagnosed with a fractured left thigh bone. The 29-year-old, who became the first Australian to win the two-week race in any category last year, headed into last night’s stage in fifth place overall.

Price was reportedly leading the 416km stage between San Salvador de Jujuy in northern Argentina and Bolivian city of Tupiza when he crashed 50km from the finish line. He was discovered injured on the ground by Portugese rider Paulo Goncalves, who lost time to alert race officials of his status. “In Bolivia, in the final part of the special I stopped to help Toby Price, who was ahead of me and I found that he had been injured,”

Goncalves said. “I called and waited for the helicopter and I am confident that they will reinstate me with the time lost.” Price started his title defence brightly by winning the second stage to claim the overall lead. Having fallen 16 minutes off the pace with an error-ridden third stage, he was attempting to make up ground when he crashed on Thursday. In 2016’s Dakar Rally, Price won the gruelling race almost 40 min-

utes ahead of his nearest rival. It is not his first major crash, having broken his neck and back during a race four years ago. Spaniard Joan Barreda, who retained the overall race lead after coming second in the fourth stage, expressed sympathy for Price. “It is a shame what has happened to Toby Price,” he said. “Hopefully it’s nothing too serious and he will get over it soon and be back at full speed on the track soon.” - AAP

David Warner continues to rewrite the records books, this time blasting the second-fastest halfcentury in the third test against Pakistan. Warner smashed three sixes and seven fours in a 23-ball halfcentury yesterday, an Australian record, falling two balls shy of beating Misbah-ul-Huq’s record set in 2014-15. Warner’s latest achievement comes after becoming just the fifth batsman in test history to hit a century before lunch in his first innings knock at the SCG. Warner appeared on track to threaten Brendon McCullum’s record for fastest century in 54 balls, however he was bowled trying to slog Wahab Riaz for 55. Earlier, Pakistan veteran Younis Khan moved to within 36 runs of becoming the 13th batsman to score 10,000 runs in test cricket history. Khan was left stranded on 175 after running out of partners in their first innings. The tourists were all out for 315 in reply to the hosts’ 538. Australia then embarrassed Pakistan’s patched-up attack, declaring at 2-241 after bludgeoning their way to a 464-run lead. Quick runs were the order of the day after Steve Smith opted against enforcing the follow-on in Sydney, where the morning session was washed out for the second day in a row. Smith, David Warner, Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb didn’t disappoint, feasting on the many loose balls dished up by the tourists. Skipper Steve Smith joined Don Bradman as one of four players to average more than 60 through 50 tests. On a record-breaking fourth day against Pakistan, Smith took a giant step towards batting immortality with another half-century in the second innings. He was eventually brought undone by Yasir Shah after a 43-ball 59 that included eight boundaries and a six, leaving him with a series-high 441 runs, and his average remained above the 60-run mark at 60.15. - AAP

Filly on track for Guineas Capable filly Dontpokethetiger will return to stakes company when she makes her next appearance. “She’ll run in the Gore Guineas and hopefully the next two in the series after that,” trainer Peter Rudkin (right) said. Bash Brothers rule the roost

t’s hard to imagine how the anti-McCullum brigade can still manage to put pen to paper, finger to keyboard and mouthpiece to Radio Sport. He’s this year’s skipper of the red-hot Heat in the Big Bash, and they’re red-hot because, well, he’s the skipper. In the last few seasons Chris Lynn has been almost a one-man band for the Heat, scoring a lot of runs at the top of the innings, but often throwing away his wicket as he felt the pressure of having to keep up the scoring pace, or just running out of capable partners. Now he’s joined by one of the world’s premier batsmen (and that’s an undeniable fact for the harshest of critics – Baz is the leading scorer in T20 international cricket, the only player with two T20 centuries, and right at the other end of the scale he’s notched up a test triple century, not sure what else he could do to impress), and the newly-christened Bash Brothers are suddenly top of the tree. On Thursday night the Scorchers put up a more-than respectable total of 173 for the Heat to chase; the average winning total over there is 170. The West Australian side has a bowling attack that’s far from the worst in the comp, you may have heard of the likes of Mitchell Johnson, Mitch Marsh, Ashton Agar and English import David Willey. But while McCullum was travelling at a sedate 50 runs off 31 balls, his partner-incrime with his new-found freedom to play his natural game was flaying the bowling to all parts, so much so that when, on 98, he strolled down the wicket to chat to Baz about the next ball, his skipper told him “Mate, that’s it, game over!’ That was with an unheard-of five overs yet to be bowled. Chris Gayle has definitely lost the Big Bash master blaster crown. The critics still insist on referring to that now-ancient World Cup final, where Baz applied the only method that could possibly beat the Aussies and attacked them head on; he crashed and burned, as even superstars do sometimes, and that was the end for the Black Caps. Those self-same critics are obviously quick to forget that without Baz’ pyrotechnics in the quarters and semis the Black Caps wouldn’t have even been in the final. But being a whizz-bang batting maestro is far from McCullum’s only card to play. His sometimes unorthodox captaincy skills, recognised world-wide over recent seasons, are also the reason the Heat are sitting atop the Big Bash rankings. In several games his adept field placements and tactics have won his team games that were hanging precariously in the balance. And for a man who has had more than his fair share of back issues, his fielding is nothing short of superb. It’s also hard to please the Aussie commentators if you’re not from their shores, so the high praise heaped on McCullum from that quarter speaks volumes indeed. So, is it time for Black Caps’ supporters to fetch out the ‘Bring Back Baz’ posters then?

Lagging behind on punctuality Less than 80 per cent of Air New Zealand’s flights were on-schedule in 2016, according to a study by air travel intelligence company OAG. The national carrier came in as the eighth most punctual airline in the Asia Pacific region with an on-time performance (OTP) of 79.2 per cent. That compares with first-placed Qantas Airways’ 87.6 per cent. Air NZ didn’t make the top 20 list for the most punctual airlines in the world, which placed Qantas as fourth and Virgin Australia 14th with an OTP of 84.5 per cent. In the low-cost carriers category, Jetstar Airways was ranked 19th globally with 73.7 per cent of its flights running on time. The study was based on some

NZ firm buys French company CBL Corporation has completed its 94.5 million euro ($142.7m) purchase of its biggest customer. The deal will see the company take over France’s Securities and Financial Solutions Europe SA (SFS), in a move the credit and financial risk insurer expects to lift earnings. The Auckland-based company closed the deal in Luxembourg on January 5, after receiving approval from Luxembourg’s Commissariat aux Assurances in October 2016. SFS is France’s biggest specialist producer of construction sector insurance and, with the IMS claims management operation which CBL has also bought, generated normalised operating earnings of 8.2 million euros on revenue of 41 million euros in 2015. “The acquisition of SFS is expected to provide important strategic benefits for CBL,” managing director Peter Harris said. “[This includes] the removal of distribution concentration risk that SFS represented being CBL’s

That added momentum to a drop in the US dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a basket of currencies, as investors reassessed the outlook for Fed rate hikes after minutes to last month’s policy meeting showed officials were unsure what level of stimulus president-elect Donald Trump’s spending programme and tax reform would inject into the world’s biggest economy. “The Chinese government have been trying to stem the flow

Price of a bad decision is high Sue Newman

t takes a man with a big heart to forgive the person responsible for killing his daughter. But that’s what Marcus Moore has done and you can’t help but admire his ability to look beyond the tragedy, put aside the natural need to cast blame and to extend the hand of forgiveness. His daughter Lily and two other teens were killed when a car driven by a 14-year-old, crashed near Leeston on Boxing Day night. The driver might have been injured, but he survived and will recover – physically. Emotionally he’s scarred for life. Teenage years are fraught with danger and temptation fuelled by hormones and a belief that bad things never happen to the young. Throw cars into the mix and there are a dozen recipes for disaster at every turn. Those years are tough going for parents as they balance the need to protect their teens against the need to let them take fledgling steps towards independence. Inevitably they’ll make mistakes and unfortunately some of those mistakes are fatal. It’s every parent’s nightmare, the midnight door knock with a cop on the other side. Inevitably that means trouble, it’s just a question of how bad. For the parents of the five teens involved in the Leeston smash, it was the worst kind of news; three young lives ended before those teens had really started to live. Alongside absolute grief it’s understandable that anger, bitterness and blame are in the emotional mix. But it’s less often that there’s forgiveness. In offering to forgive the driver, Marcus Moore is showing a huge understanding of just how much the tragedy will have a lifelong impact on the young man. He’ll carry with him for the rest of his life the knowledge that he was the person behind the wheel, the person who elected to take a car and who lost control of that car. His punishment is lifelong. But his four passengers also made decisions that night. They decided to climb into the car and take a ride with a driver they knew was unlicensed and all but one of them decided not to buckle up their seat belt. Three of them paid with their lives.

Third of escapees caught More than 50 of the 158 inmates who escaped in the biggest jailbreak ever in the Philippines have been caught or killed, officials said yesterday, with a manhunt underway for the others. Of the prisoners who escaped after suspected heavily armed Muslim rebels stormed a jail in the country’s south, 43 have been recaptured and eight were killed. Two others are being treated in hospital for injuries, said Maria Joyce Birrey, the Cotabato provincial police spokeswoman. As well, a jail guard died in the attack on the jail and a village official who allegedly drew a gun when encountered by police was killed. The breakout from the jail in Kidapawan took place before dawn when more than 100 gunmen attacked the facility. Kidapawan city is about 930 kilometres southeast of the capital, Manila, in a restive region when Muslim rebels have been active for generations. The revelation comes from a new documentary, David Bowie: The last five years, which airs in the UK this weekend to mark what would have been the music pioneer’s 70th birthday. Severe winter weather 12 dead in batters part of Europe Chinese Parts of Europe are facing chaotic travel conditions as temperatures across the region plunged below zero amid heavy snowfalls, blocked roads, dozens of accidents and the worst coastal storms in a decade. A 20-year-old man died and his passenger was severely injured after he lost control of his vehicle on an icy road in western Germany. Two lorries collided on a snow-covered highway in the southern part of the country resulting in damage costing about 500,000 euros ($NZ754,438). Meanwhile in northern Sweden, about 100 rail passengers were stranded overnight after a train engine broke down near the small northern village of Nattavaara, 50km south of Gallivare. Passengers told local newspaper NSD that they huddled together to keep warm before villagers took them to the local parish hall and also opened a little convenience store. Strong winds unleashed by a cold front dubbed Axel and a surge in water levels battered northeastern coastal areas in Germany and Scandinavia with parts of Europe

Seven miners were confirmed dead after a falling roof triggered a gas outburst in a central Chinese coal mine, bringing the death toll to 12, state media said Friday. The outburst occurred Wednesday night when 51 workers were underground at the mine in the city of Dengfeng in Henan province, state broadcaster CCTV said. Thirty-nine workers rose to safety while five others were killed and another seven had been trapped, the report said. Workers were doing maintenance work in a pump room when the roof fell, causing the outburst of gas, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. Some reports said three rescuers were among those who died, but that could not immediately be confirmed. The mine company could not be reached. A city government official declined to comment. China’s mining industry has long been among the world’s deadliest, and top work safety regulators have acknowledged that some mines cut corners on safety standards due to financial pressure. -AP

Comedian Dan Nainan scored personal endorsements from a range of respected public figures, including Barack Obama. He makes frequent media appearances providing a millennial voice in articles about everything from young Trump voters to youth attitudes to porn. There’s just one problem: Nainan is 55 years old. A November interview left some readers puzzled as it had a feature-sized picture of Nainan looking far older than his claimed 35 years.

Four charged with hate crimes Four black people were charged with hate crimes in connection with a video broadcast live on Facebook that showed a mentally disabled white man being beaten and taunted, threatened with a knife and forced to drink from a toilet. The assault went on for hours, until Chicago police found the disoriented victim walking along a street, authorities said. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said investigators initially concluded that the 18-yearold man was singled out because he has “special needs,” not because he was white. But authorities later said the charges resulted from both the suspects’ use of racial slurs and their references to the victim’s disability. The victim was a classmate of one of the attackers and initially went with that person voluntarily, police said. “He’s traumatised by the incident, and it’s very tough to communicate with him at this point,” police Cmdr. Kevin Duffin said. Excerpts of the video posted by Chicago media outlets show the victim with his mouth taped shut and slumped in a corner of a room. At least two assailants are seen cutting off his sweatshirt, and others taunt him off camera. The video shows a wound on the top of the man’s head. One person pushes the man’s head with his or her foot. A red band also appears to be around the victim’s hands. He was tied up for four to five hours, authorities said. Indonesia softens Alleged Isis fighter suspension stance on trial in Berlin Indonesia has softened its suspension of military co-operation with Australia. Senior cabinet minister Wiranto told reporters in Jakarta the suspension only applied to language lessons at special forces academies. Less than 48 hours earlier it was revealed the Indonesian military had suspended all defence cooperation with Australia. The suspension was triggered following an incident last November involving teaching materials causing offence to a special forces trainer at a Perth military academy. The matter has been under investigation in Australia. It’s understood Army Chief Angus Campbell is being dispatched to Jakarta in coming days. Indonesian President Joko Widodo said his country’s relationship with Australia is in good shape. “Indonesia and Australia have both agreed to respect one an-

other and not to interfere in each other’s domestic affairs,” he told reporters in Jakarta. “Although the issue lies at the operational level, this is a matter of principle.” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he looked forward to the issue being resolved as soon as possible. Labor MP Luke Gosling who spent 13 years in the army said it was sad news Indonesia was suspending the language training cooperation with Australia’s defence force. “My experience of Perth program was excellent & respectful,” Mr Gosling tweeted. The trial of an alleged Islamic State fighter accused of scouting for potential terrorist targets in Berlin has opened in the German capital under heavy security. Prosecutors say the 19-yearold Syrian-born man, identified as Shaas Al M, examined sites such as the major shopping district of Alexanderplatz, the German capital’s landmark Brandenburg Gate and the area near the Reichstag parliamentary building. All three sites are also major tourist magnets. The man, who has been in detention since March, is charged with being a member of a foreign terrorist organisation as well as the violation of war weapons laws. Prosecutors said there was no evidence of any concrete plans or preparations for an attack. However, Al M “informed

his contacts in Islamic State about the potential targets,” according to a court statement. “Furthermore, he had arranged to send at least one person to Syria as a fighter and offered himself as contact person for possible attackers in Germany,” the court said. The accused arrived in Germany in 2015 amid a surge of refugees fleeing conflict in Syria and elsewhere. Prior to his arrival in Germany, the defendant participated in Isis military operations in Syria, the court said. In addition, he was responsible for supplying food to the group’s troops. His trial comes two weeks after an attack on a crowded Berlin Christmas market in which 12 people were killed and about 50 were injured. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack. - DPA

Overseas tourists landing in Adelaide yesterday were being offered advice on safely dealing with the extreme heat the city will be sweltering through. The Bureau of Meteorology expects Adelaide will reach tops of 40°C yesterday and 41°C today, followed by a cooler peak of 30°C tomorrow. State duty officer Brenton Clarke said the SES is approaching overseas visitors as they can be vulnerable in extreme heat when they have not experienced it back home. “It’s about trying to minimise the risk to anybody who is arriving into SA,” he said. The advice from the service includes staying hydrated, avoiding going outside during the hottest part of the day and dressing appropriately for the weather. - AAP

11 die in minibus crash At least 11 people have been killed after a minibus plunged into a ditch in western Kenya. The driver lost control of the vehicle near the city of Kisumu, local police commander Henry Maloba said. The accident comes as Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority confirmed that 67 people died in road accidents during the Christmas period. Most of the accidents were due to speeding. The Daily Nation newspaper quoted an official as saying the minibus was overloaded. The fatalities reportedly included three members of the same family. Seven people were seriously injured. - DPA

Bangalore arrests Four people have been arrested in connection with sexual assaults on women during New Year’s Eve revelry in the southern Indian city of Bangalore. “Bangalore is a modern city, we will make it safer,” Karnataka state Home Minister G Parameshwar said. There was widespread outrage after female partygoers complained they were groped and assaulted by a mob of men in the city centre. In response to the reported abuse on New Year’s Eve, Parameshwar said a slew of measures including additional streetlights, new closed circuit television cameras and additional emergency telephone lines to police - all to be put in place within two months. - DPA
