A magnitude 6 earthquake might have hit Canterbury yesterday morning, but the shaky start to the day didn’t rattle the nerves of people in the Ashburton District. The quake, centred near Arthurs Pass, was just over 5 kilometres deep and was ranked as severe on the Geonet website. It is reported to have been felt around New Zealand, but closer to home it barely raised a flicker of alarm. The quake became top national news early yesterday, but around the Ashburton District the community divided neatly into those who had felt a small tremor and those who had

not, with many wondering what the rest of the country was getting excited about. Many said what was ranked as a severe quake had been more like one of the mild after shocks that followed the September 2010 and February 2011 quakes. Initially the quake was reported as centred 35 kilometres north of Methven, at Lake Coleridge. Its intensity was rated at 6.4 and it was listed as occurring at a depth of 10 kilometres. The statistics changed during the day as Geonet seismologists collated data from recording devices located around New Zealand. Initial readings were taken from seismometers across the country, seismologist John Ristau said, but when staff focused on South Island recorders closer to the epicentre a much more accurate picture of the quake was revealed resulting in a dramatic change in data. continued P3

The hit fantasy film The Hobbit has fallen victim to technical problems on the West Coast which have closed Westport’s main movie theatre until further notice. The NBS Theatre’s Bill Moffitt Cinema has cancelled all screenings. The LPSU power supply on its projector failed on December 28 and its QUBE server, which houses all the content for screening in the cinema, packed up on January 2, said manager Debbie Crackett. Dalai Lama ‘to appear’ at Glastonbury Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama appears to be an unlikely booking for the bill of this year’s Glastonbury Festival. The 79-year-old’s website has announced he will be attending the event in Somerset, although the entry was later removed from his online schedule. The line-up for the event is not expected to be confirmed until around April with organisers usually keen to keep the full list of names under wraps. The message to website visitors, listing his engagement for June 28, said: “His Holiness will give a talk at the Glastonbury Festival in the morning.” A message about him appearing at Kempton Park racetrack the following day to give a talk about Buddhism in the 21st Century remains on the site. The Dalai Lama has lived in exile in Dharamsala, northern India, after fleeing Tibet in 1959 due to upheaval in his homeland. Cooper uses subway Hollywood actor Bradley Cooper is shunning luxury limousines during his stint on stage in New York and taking the subway to work instead. The Hangover star is currently appearing in The Elephant Man on Broadway and he has been spotted taking a train to the Booth Theatre in Manhattan. When asked about his decision to use public transport, Cooper told America’s Nightline TV show that it feels normal to him. “It doesn’t feel crazy. I always take the subway here (in New York). I guess given the fact that I’m someone who gets photographed, it’s a crazy notion. But there’s millions of people who do it every day,” Cooper said. Yesterday morning’s magnitude 6 quake left many people, including Lake Coleridge resident Toni Barlow, wondering what all the fuss was about. She described the quake as “very minor”, and said she was surprised that it was being reported nationally. “It seems ridiculous to us, because seriously, not a single thing fell over, and everyone in the village is saying the same thing. There was a jolt that woke us up and there was a bit of sound before the jolt, and the house sort of rolled for maximum two seconds, so it really was very minor,” she said. Miss Barlow said the aftershocks from the Christchurch

earthquakes felt worse than yesterday’s tremor. “So while we were close in proximity, I think we felt it less strongly than some of the reports I’ve seen other people saying.” However, Lake Coleridge Village Homestay owner Peter Low said while it was not to the same scale as previous earthquakes, it still shook his whole house. “This one was more of a shake, it was more of a rumble, it just went on a lot longer,” he said. “It was a good one.” Staff at the Coleridge Power Station kicked into gear after the quake to ensure there was no damage. TrustPower community relation co-ordinator Suzi Luff said staff undertook an earthquake inspection, which included

checks for physical or layered damage, and to see if any extra work needed to be completed. Ms Luff said she had not received any reports of damage at the power station. In Methven people were talking about the shake but just as many were saying they had either slept through the biggest quake at 6.48am; for most the greatest concern was that the quake might be followed by a significant aftershock. “It brings back the memories of what happened in Christchurch and we’re hoping that this is it,” one woman said. “It’s a bit close to home for comfort,” another said. At Café 131, staff said people were talking over coffee about the shake and were saying it wasn’t like the shakes they’d be-

come accustomed to – this one had no noise. On the street, one person described the earthquake as ‘more like an aftershock” Martin Nordqvist was sitting at his kitchen table reading the paper when the quake struck. “It was a good shake. I had a funny feeling and the next thing there was a rocking and rolling. We haven’t taken down our Christmas tree and the decorations were moving.” Methven police Senior Constable Aaron Tapp said he had received no reports of any damage in the area. “I felt it, it woke me up, but I haven’t heard of anything major,” he said. Ashburton police had also received no reports of earthquake related damage yesterday.

Quake a good test for museum’s seismometer By sue newman

A seismometer recently installed at Ashburton’s new museum had its first test in yesterday’s magnitude 6 earthquake. The machine clearly showed the severe quake and the myriad of aftershocks. Ashburton is the only museum in the country to house one of the TCI seismometers that are being rolled out nationwide as part of a seismometer in schools project. Museum manager Michael Hanrahan said the seismometer will be sited in the public area where its recordings can be openly viewed. Scoring one for the museum was something of a coup, he said, with just four others, all in schools, in the South Island. Museum volunteer, retired teacher Glen Vallender master-minded the project and has been trained in the seismometer’s operation, Mr Hanrahan said. “I’ve always wanted one of these for the museum and we’re lucky, cost wise all it’s cost is the price of a shelf to put it on, it’s been sponsored by six organisations.” It is possible for anyone with a password to be able to access data recorded by the machine and it has a QR code that can be scanned.

from P1 He believes that in spite of the severity of the quake, its physical nature and its isolated location were key factors in making it seem a relatively low-key event. “With the Christchurch earthquakes there were other factors that ramped up the intensity, this one didn’t have those factors it was a strikeslip quake where one side of the fault moves past the other,” he said. The strike-slip quake is one of the most common shallow quakes, and was followed by a string of aftershocks, some more than magnitude 5. A large aftershock could still occur, Mr Ristau said. While the quake was close to the Southern Alps, it did not occur on the Alpine Fault. “We haven’t had any reports of damage come in but we have had a lot of fault reports, he said. By late afternoon the earthquake had been followed by more than 20 aftershocks, ranging in intensity from magnitude 3.3 to 4.2. All were centred between 25 and 35 kilometres from the quake’s original epicentre. There were no reports of damage to properties around the Ashburton District. In the wake of the quake, train services were suspended between Christchurch and Greymouth and Christchurch and Oamaru while KiwiRail staff checked tracks. State Highway 77 near Methven and State Highways 73 and 6 through to the West Coast were also checked for damage. None was found.

Beware the summer slump By Daisy HuDson

Children across Mid Canterbury may be enjoying their summer break, but parents are being warned not to let education fall by the wayside during the holidays. According to a local principal, pupils who do not continue reading and learning in the school holidays are at risk of falling behind when school resumes. A 2012 New Zealand research project headed by Stuart McNaughton on the issue, dubbed the “summer learning effect”, found that it was a “major barrier to ongoing achievement”, and the gains made during the school year disappeared. For Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy, the issue was a familiar one. “It’s known as the summer slump,” he said. “Generally we factor that in, that kids will need a hand, most kids will have slipped back over summer.” For Mr Murphy, parent engagement and effort was a major factor

in encouraging children to continue with their learning outside of school. “It’s about finding opportunities, and not thinking ‘oh, I have to go and get a level 17 reading book and sit and read with my child every night’,” he said. “It’s trying to build it into the things you’re doing anyway.” Mr Murphy said it would be “great to hit the ground running” and pick up from when school finished at the end of last year. The drop in children reading over summer had not gone unnoticed at the Ashburton Public Library. Children’s librarian Adrienne Moodie said the number of children visiting the library during the holidays had decreased overall, which she attributed to a rise in the use of Ebooks. However, the library was making an effort to encourage children to read more over the summer, with its Read and Grow programme offering prizes for children who borrowed 20 books from the library over the summer break.

Climbers rescued Two climbers have been plucked from the Bryant Glacier in Otago after becoming disoriented in low cloud. A 23-year-old Australian national and Department of Conservation employee and a 32-year-old Chilean man were airlifted from the glacier, near Kinloch, by strop about 3pm on Monday, five hours after activating an emergency beacon. Senior Constable Julian Cahill, of Queenstown police, said the pair entered the area on Saturday with the intention of climbing Mt Bonpland the next day before returning to their vehicle at the Glacier Burn car park. However, they became “disorientated in the cloud on the ascent”. - NZME

Fire suspicious A “suspicious and dangerous” fire was raging at a car wrecking yard in Invercargill last evening. Members of the public were asked to stay away from the scene of the blaze in Otepuni Ave in the city, as it is giving off toxic smoke and fumes, and a number of LPG cylinders could also be in the yard, police said. Both police and the Fire Service were at the scene, with several fire trucks attempting to douse the flames. The fire was “suspicious and dangerous”, police said. Council underground infrastructure intact Ashburton’s underground infrastructure has been given the all-clear following yesterday’s magnitude 6 earthquake. Ashburton District Council staff have taken a long, hard look at the district’s water networks, including pipes and pumps and have not found any damage and staff are following up with a thorough investigation with contractors to identify if there were any minor leaks. The earthquake caused no damage to any of the council’s buildings. While the district may have

escaped the quake unscathed, council acting emergency manager Rick Catchpowle said it was a timely reminder for people to be prepared for emergencies. “Leaving it until an emergency strikes may be too late so it is important to be prepared at all times,” he said. People should have an emergency plan and kit with supplies that would last at least three days in the event of a disaster, Mr Catchpowle said. Tramper ‘swept away’ A tramper who went missing in a remote and rugged part of the South Island is likely to have been swept away by strong currents before drowning in a gorge, searchers say. Police yesterday named the missing tramper as 41-year-old Wellington man Scott Oliver, also known as Brock. He was last seen in Mt Aspiring National Park at 6.30pm on Sunday, when he separated from the rest of his party to attempt a shortcut through a gorge into the upper reaches of the Wilkin River. - NZME

Dead man shot A man who was found dead at a Manawatu house on Sunday was shot, police confirmed yesterday as they released his name. James Whatuira, 49, from Pahiatua, was discovered at the property on Ormond St around 3pm on January 4. He did not live at that address, police said. The death of an Ashburton man in a motorcycle crash last weekend is a huge loss for the entire Ashburton community, his grieving wife said yesterday. Clifford Anthony Sparrow, known as Tony or Hoover, died when his motorcycle left the road on State Highway 73, near Porters Pass, on Saturday. Mr Sparrow’s wife of three years, Kiley Sparrow, said her motorcycle enthusiast husband and his friends had organised the trip just hours before they set out. “I knew that he was going to go, because that was just Tony, he loved doing it,” she said. However, an eerie omen preceded the tragedy, and Mrs Sparrow said she knew something was not right when the couple left home before the trip. “As we left, my veil usually hangs on a nail on the wall, when we came in here to get our leathers before we left, my veil fell, and has stayed there ever since.” The couple had been together for nine years, and met at a party Mrs Sparrow had organised after a band set to play at the event pulled out. “So I did some ringing around Ashburton and said we need a really easy going, mid-

dle of the road rock band, who would be able to do it, and they said Hoover.” According to his wife, music was a big part of Mr Sparrow’s life, and he had played in bands for more than 20 years. The couple had only recently moved into their new home. “It’s unfortunate, I had everything I could’ve asked for – I had a lovely man who treated me like a princess, we had a

lovely home, we were financially secure, we had it all,” Mrs Sparrow said. “I’d say ‘look, we’ve done it babe’, and he’d just sit there with a smile on his face.” Mr Sparrow worked as an assistant manager at Mico Plumbing in Ashburton, a job his wife said he “lived for”. For Mrs Sparrow, the death of her “quick-witted” husband was a huge loss.

“He had an awesome sense of humour and would never ever say a bad thing about anyone.” “Honestly, he was just loved by so many people.” Mr Sparrow was one of nine people to die on South Island roads over the holiday period, with 17 fatalities recorded in total. A service to celebrate his life will be held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Friday.

The chips are down in Otago – and, in some cases, out. A lack of potatoes due to poor weather in spring has resulted in a shortage of potato chips on some supermarket shelves. Visits by the Otago Daily Times showed displays of New Zealand’s favourite salty treats were depleted in some Dunedin supermarkets. However, raw potatoes were still found to be in supply. A Countdown spokeswoman said the supermarket giant was “working directly with our potato suppliers to help make sure we have potatoes and potato chips available for our customers”. Foodstuffs New Zealand said stock of all chip brands was available, but suppliers were “managing supply due to challenging growing and harvesting conditions”. New Zealand’s two largest chip producers – Eta Snack Foods and Bluebird Foods – were unavailable for comment when contacted this week. But Blair Harris, production manager for Timaru-based chip producer Heartland Potato Chips, said the company had struggled to keep up with demand as a result of other producers struggling to source potatoes. “Really for us, we physically can’t make enough potato chips to supply,” he said. The mercury might have dipped yesterday but that hasn’t lessened the need for people across the Ashburton District to keep a close eye on their water consumption, council staff say. On Monday the council imposed level two restrictions on all of its water supplies, putting residents on to an alternate day hosing regime between the hours of 6pm and midnight only. The restrictions helped even out demand and allowed residents to keep on using water for essential and non-essential purposes, council service delivery manager Neil McCann said. “They apply to any use of water from a hose connected to a council water supply, including garden irrigation schemes.” Mt Somers village is on level five restrictions which limits water use to drinking, cooking and bathing only. It moved to this level on Friday after a heavy draw down on

the supply saw the gravity fed tanks virtually empty. People with private wells are exempt from the council’s hosing restrictions. The council has 150 properties on its register where residents have requested a Private Well sign.

There are, however, other properties with wells that are not on the council register. To help conserve water over the summer when using their hoses, the council is encouraging residents to: ■ Fill a paddling pool for children rather than squirting

a hose (squirting can waste up to 1000 litres per hour). ■ Use a timer on sprinklers and a trigger hose to avoid water waste ■ Water the roots of plants rather than the leaves ■ Remove weeds as they compete with plants for water

Turn off the tap while you are brushing your teeth and you will save 10 litres of water a minute. Rinse, don’t soak – take a short shower instead of a bath and you will save up to 70 litres of water. Every time you flush the toilet you use 13 to 20 litres of water, so make sure you only flush when you need to. Do not switch on the dishwasher or washing machine until you have a full load ready to go. Rinse and peel vegetables in a bowl or sink instead of running them under the tap – you could save up to 10 litres every minute.

Change, growth and controversy – all words that could apply to a tumultuous year for education in Mid Canterbury. Booming rolls have caused headaches for schools as they tried to cope with logistical issues, leading to a series of meetings between principals and Ministry of Education officials. The spike in student numbers will see a bevy of changes in 2015, with increased staff-

ing appointments and multiple building projects on the cards. Mid Canterbury Principals Association president Chris Murphy praised the collaborative approach local educators took to the issue, which he believed had led to a lot of “unease and uncertainty”. “We’ve all got different situations and we’re all doing the best thing possible for our own school, but to take time to step back and look at the district as a whole, and education in the district as a whole, there was a

level of selflessness I suppose,” he said. On top of the roll growth challenges, some principals faced major funding changes in November after the Ministry of Education released the first changes to school decile ratings in seven years. Rakaia School principal Mark Ellis was left fuming after his school jumped from a decile four to a six, resulting in a loss of thousands of dollars of funding. Mr Ellis labelled the change,

which was the biggest in the district, a “joke”. The changes are set to continue in the new year, with the roll out of the government’s flagship education policy, Investing in Educational Success (IES). The programme, which Mr Murphy believed would be “massive” for the district, will see a cluster of schools in the district working collaboratively on a range of issues. “It’s going to be a huge thing,” Mr Murphy said.

High achieving young people can be found all over the district and former Netherby School pupils Mahina Edwards, 11, and Gemma Taylor, 11, are no exception. Mahina loves her sport, she plays netball and her favourite positions are goal shoot and goal attack. She is also talented at athletics, and represented Netherby School at the counties in high jump – although she admits her favourite event is long jump. Sport was not the only aspect at school Mahina was involved in – she was also a Kapa Haka leader and practised every Friday night during the school year, she was a part of the school choir and was also chief librarian. She said she was busy during the year but enjoyed it. Achieving well in school was another thing that Mahina said was important to her. She said she does well in reading and maths but said her favourite subject was writing. Last year she sat two International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) tests, one for reading and another for maths. She did so well, she was awarded merit and got the highest score in the school for the reading test. Another achievement that Mahina is proud of is her Diploma in Deejayology which she received when she went on Hokonui radio. When asked what her fa-

House set on fire A Bay of Plenty house was saved from being engulfed in flames by “pure luck” after it was broken in to, police said. Police said a person, or number of people, unlawfully entered the house on Kauri St in Edgecumbe on Sunday night or Monday morning. Once inside the house, they caused damage to a number of different areas and a fire was deliberately started in one of the bedrooms. Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Darren Thomas said: “This is a particularly concerning situation, as many houses are completely destroyed when fires are lit in this way. It is only by pure luck that the entire house was not engulfed in flames.” - NZME

Deaths referred An investigation into the deaths of an elderly couple whose bodies were found in their Dunedin home has been completed. Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis said post-mortem examinations were done yesterday. The results will form part of a coronial hearing. The couple in their 80s, who had been married for 62 years, were found in their Brockville home on Sunday. The family had asked for privacy. - NZME

Pines Beach fire A plantation fire that blazed through Pines Beach in north Canterbury on Monday is being treated as suspicious. Police are now asking anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area to come forward. The blaze began in a plantation forest area 300m north of the car park at Pines Beach, 4km east of Kaiapoi, just before 2pm on Monday. vourite part about school was she said she enjoyed seeing her friends and also loved netball. “Netball runs in my family,” she said. She pins herself as outgoing too. “Anything that includes doing something in front of people, I love,” she said. She entered a poetry competition at school, and said she also really enjoys giving speeches. When she grows up her ambition is to be a doctor. “I had aplastic anaemia and want to help people the way

they helped me,” she said. Aplastic anaemia is a rare condition where the number of red and white cells, as well as platelets are depleted. Gemma has also been very busy, last year she was a part of the Youth Council and was a part of the choir, the Kapa Haka group, was a librarian and on the Student Council. Outside of school she was a part of the Cactus Youth Group, which is run by Safer Ashburton and was a Patrol Leader in Scouts. She played a variety of sports too, from miniball to

rippa rugby to soccer and tennis, and netball too. Like Mahina she also represented Netherby School at the athletics counties. On top of this, she went to swimming and cross country counties too. Gemma does well in school, and achieved the highest stanine level (stanine nine) in reading and maths in the school. And although she isn’t looking too far ahead and doesn’t quite know what she wants to be when she grows up, she does know she wants to work hard at Ashburton Intermediate School this year.

Two injured in crash Two people were injured in a head-on collision near Waitomo yesterday. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to transport two injured people to Waikato Hospital. An Auckland woman, who was the sole occupant in one of the cars, suffered a hip injury. A man in the other car was taken away with chest injuries. The crash happened about 10.30am. - NZME

Motorbike, car collide A Whangarei man died on Monday when his motorbike and a car collided. Karlton Hughes, 50, died at the scene of the crash on Murrays Rd, west of Whangarei. Police said the crash happened about 2.45pm when two motorcyclists were travelling towards Mangakahia Rd. Hughes’ bike and an oncoming car collided and he died at the scene. - NZME

Owners of huts in the second row of the Hakatere settlement have spent their first Christmas with an unimpeded view of the Pacific Ocean. This time last year their view was not of the sea, it was of the six, much loved homes of their neighbours that were slowly slipping into the sea as the coast beneath them was eroded. In November those six baches were demolished and the face of Hakatere changed forever. And that meant when the hut holders’ association held its annual meeting on Sunday, it was a bitter-sweet occasion, chairman Ross Lithgow said. It might be a new year with a new beginning, but a fair bit of history disappeared over the past year, he said. “But people have moved on, they’ve accepted what has happened. The land is starting to grass over and in a year’s time you’ll never know what’s happened,” he said. An order to demolish was placed on the six baches in May last year by the Ashburton District Council because ero-

sion of the cliffs on which they were built made them unsafe. For the six bach owners, two of whom were permanent residents, that meant finding alternative accommodation. Several years ago the hut holders’ association, aware that the front row baches were on borrowed time, made land available at the rear of the settlement where those owners could rebuild. Two are considering that option, four have chosen not to, Mr Lithgow said. “They’ve been given a rates holiday until the end of March and then they have to decide, we’ll have to know their intentions.” If the displaced hut owners take up the option of building, they will have no chance to gain a view of the sea as hut holders’ association rules state all buildings must be single storey only. If they choose not to build, the rear sections will remain vacant. “Those rules are there to protect everyone and I guess the second row hut owners have become the beneficiaries of an unfortunate situation,” Mr Lithgow said.

Mid Canterbury GPs were kept busy over the Christmas and New Year period, tending to ailments ranging from rashes to stomach bugs, and even a few stitch-ups. Allenton Medical Centre provided duty doctor services on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and were kept busy. Practice manager Nicky Webb said 14 patients were seen on Christmas Day and 51 on Boxing Day – 31 in the morning and 20 in the afternoon. “It’s a high number, obviously Christmas was cruisy but it was made up for on Boxing Day.” In between Christmas and New Year, Moore Street Medical Centre took over the duty doctor service. Receptionist Sharon Robin said Saturday, December 27 was a very busy day for the practice. There were no patients with any complaints that were out of the ordinary she said, just general bugs and sickness. Tinwald Medical Centre then operated over the New Year. The acting office manager said the centre was very busy on Friday, January 2, so much so, that a

second doctor had to be called in. “It was absolutely frantic, morning and night,” she said. The centre was open from 10am until 3pm and then again from 6pm until 9pm. The office manager called it “one of the busiest days the medical centre had ever experienced”. The Sealy Street Medical Centre receptionist said Sunday, January 4 was also an exceptionally busy day. She said the patients that were seen by the duty doctor were mostly affected by sickness or bugs, but there were also a few accidents that had to be attended to. All the patients seen in the morning session on the Sunday lived within Mid Canterbury she said, there were no people from out of town. Methven and Rakaia medical centres also operated a Christmas and New Year duty roster. Dr Gayle O’Duffy of Methven said Christmas Day and Boxing Day were quiet, which is rather typical, but the period from January 1 to January 4 was busy. In Rakaia, the weekend following Christmas was “pretty busy”, receptionist Karen Langdon said.

Shaken to remember Stu Oldham

t was an early-morning earthquake that rattled nerves but which ultimately left many Mid Cantabrians wondering what all the fuss was about. It was also a rude reminder for people to be emergency-prepared just two-and-a-half weeks from the anniversary of the deadly Christchurch earthquake. The earthquake rolled through the district at 6.48am yesterday, as many townies made their breakfast and many farmers hosed-down their milking sheds. Items rattled on shop shelves, lights and clothes hangers became pendulums and spooked animals jumped, mooed, whinnied and barked. Programmes were interrupted with breaking news of an earthquake near Arthur’s Pass. Soon, GeoNet reported the 6.4 quake was near Lake Coleridge. Reports focused on Methven and across the district, people wondered whether they were alone in feeling a tremor that felt less intense than the magnitude 6.3 Christchurch earthquake. They were not. Mid-morning – long after surprised Lake Coleridge and Methven residents told media about a big but not frightening shake – GeoNet said the quake was magnitude 6 and near Arthur’s Pass. Cantabrians know enough about earthquakes to know it takes time to accurately pinpoint and measure them. They also know, from sometimes horrifying and bitter experience, what it is like when a big one hits. Many people compared yesterday to the devastating 2011 earthquake and, for many, this made yesterday’s quake relatively inconsequential. But it should not be written-off as unimportant. Instead, it should prompt us all to make sure we are ready for whatever nature throws at us; to check – or even create – our emergency survival kits and make sure they are ready and useable, and to revise their plans for if a big one hits. Emergency preparedness is a hot topic when Canterbury pauses to remember the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Preparing now means we can mark this month’s anniversary knowing we have tried to prepare for the unimaginable.

he main purpose of year-end reviews, of course, is to hold the ads apart. But they can also serve as a kind of annual check-up on the political health – and also on the economic, demographic and even physical health – of the planet and its teeming human population. So imagine that we are a panel of high-priced medicos reviewing the health status of our most important client, the human race. The first thing to note is that the client is still piling on weight at an alarming rate – up from two billion units to seven billion in the past seventy-five years – but continues to thrive, for the most part. And most of the ailments that it worries about are mere hypochondria. Take, for example, the widespread concern (at least in the media and among what Bob Fisk calls the “think-tank mountebanks”) that the emergence of the so-called Islamic State in the no-man’s land between Iraq and Syria will lead to catastrophe. There will allegedly be a surge in terrorist attacks around the world, a Sunni-Shia religious war spanning the entire Middle East, or even a global religious war between Muslims and everybody else. The Sunni fanatics and the Shia fanatics are far too busy trying to kill each other to have time to spare for attacking non-Muslims. (Besides, most Muslims don’t want to attack anybody; they just want to be left in peace.) Quite a lot of the slaughter in Iraq and Syria is driven by religion, but we are still a long way from a religious conflict that directly involves the really important states of the Middle East:

Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Iran. Even the anticipated surge in terrorist attacks outside the region is not likely to come to pass. The only strategic purpose for such attacks by any organised group of Islamist extremists is to gain support and recruits within their own region. If they can lure Western powers into killing lots of Muslims in their region, then their cause will prosper locally. As it turns out, Islamic State has not even needed to carry out terrorist attacks in the West to achieve this goal. Videos of Western hostages being beheaded have been enough to get the bombing going again, and Western governments are no more troubled by the sheer pointlessness of the bombing than they were in the past. Both sides are playing for the home audience and really don’t care much about the impact of their actions on the alleged enemy. The whole “Islamic State” panic is a tempest in a fairly small teacup. The casualties are small, and the entire region matters little economically or strategically except to its own inhabitants. Even in the unlikely event that a Sunni-Shia religious war should engulf the whole of the Middle East, it would have no more effect

on the rest of the planet than the European wars of religion four centuries ago had on the Middle East. That is to say, hardly any. The other great shock of 2014 was a war in Europe. The Ukrainian revolution of last February was a messy and complicated business, but it need not have ended in Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and in a Russian-backed separatist war in Ukraine’s two eastern-most provinces. We owe that mainly to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s world-view as a former agent of the KGB, the Soviet secret police, which (as the old saying had it) thwarted 10 anti-Soviet plots for every one that actually existed. There was no Western plot, but Putin is driven by the belief that there was. He has taken Russia into a confrontation with the West that it cannot win, and the country’s economy is already crumbling under the twin strains of coping with Western sanctions and the collapse of the oil price. He is finding it almost impossible to back away without losing face, but he has nothing to gain by continuing the conflict either. Risk of a new Cold War: minimal. The only big worry the doctors have is the same one that

has bothered them for the past 25 years: the patient simply won’t stop smoking. Their increasingly grave warnings are met with empty promises to cut back or quit entirely, but not right now, just some time far in the future. Maybe. The news flows in endlessly and some of it has significant impact on many people’s lives – a billion people’s lives when India elects a new prime minister or China gets an (unelected) new president, both of which happened this year. But truly fundamental change is much rarer than people think (and than the media encourage them to think). Now that the threat of large-scale nuclear war has died down, only one thing qualifies. Climate change is the spectre at every feast, the unstoppable rot that undermines every positive development. The failure at Copenhagen in 2009 bleeds indistinguishably into the fudge at Durban in 2011 and on into the feeble compromise in Lima in 2014, which sets us up for the bigger disappointment of Paris in 2015. And even if by some miracle we get a useful agreement in Paris next year, nothing will actually be done until 2020. The patient thinks there’s still plenty of time to quit. There isn’t.

Sex claim ‘not a fantasy’ By Jenny CoCkerell A mother-of-three who moved from the NSW Central Coast back to Florida in the US appeared to be living the dream. But despite the happy veneer, Virginia Roberts claims she was used as an underage sex slave by a number of powerful men, including Britain’s Prince Andrew. Her allegations, which are laid out in a US lawsuit, have sent shockwaves around the world and could prove devastating for the royal family if found to be true. American-born Ms Roberts is understood to have lived in the Central Coast suburb of Glenning Valley with her Australian husband for 11 years. The couple, who settled in NSW after meeting in Thailand, moved to Florida with their three young children at the end of 2013 where they have been spending idyllic days swimming in the sea and visiting theme parks. Back in NSW, friends of the 31-year-old say they had no idea about her past life, but have no reason not to believe her. “The fact that she never boasted or talked about it to any of us to my knowledge lends credibility to what she went through in my estima-

tion,” Kate Kirton told Daily Mail Australia. “There is no way she could be regarded as a fantasist or anything like that. She was the kind of person who told things as they were.” Ms Roberts is now said to be writing a tell-all book detailing how she was allegedly trafficked by billionaire and convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein to a number of rich and powerful men. She says she had sex with Prince Andrew on three occasions, claims that are vehemently denied by the royal family and which have led it to break with its usual protocol to issue a series of stronglyworded statements of denial. Her accusations are part of a lawsuit over how US federal prosecutors handled the case of Mr Epstein - a former close friend of the prince - who was jailed for 18 months in 2008 for soliciting a minor for prostitution. Ms Roberts claims Mr Epstein kept her as a sex slave between 1999 and 2002, when she was aged between 15 and 17, after he recruited her as a masseuse. In the newly-filed court documents, she says she was paid $US15,000 to have sex with the prince in London, New York

and on Mr Epstein’s private island in the Caribbean. She originally waived her right to anonymity in an interview she gave to Britain’s Mail on Sunday in 2011. At the time, the paper reported that Ms Roberts was 17 or older when she met the prince and there was no suggestion of any sexual relations between the pair. The new claims have led to the royal family issuing a number of statements in support of the prince. A Buckingham Palace spokes-

man said over the weekend: “It is emphatically denied that the Duke of York had any form of sexual contact or relationship with Virginia Roberts. “The allegations made are false and without any foundation.” Andrew, 54, flew back to the UK from a skiing holiday in the ritzy Swiss resort of Verbier after the reports emerged. His friendship with Mr Epstein has already caused controversy with the prince stepping down from his role as the UK’s business ambassador after he was accused of a lack of judgment about his links with the American billionaire following his trial. Despite the strong denials, Ms Roberts continues to stand by her claims and says she won’t be “bullied back into silence”. “These types of aggressive attacks on me are exactly the reason why sexual abuse victims typically remain silent and the reason why I did for a long time,” she said in a statement released through her lawyers. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and police commissioner Bill Bratton have criticised dozens of officers for turning their backs on the mayor at the funeral of a murdered policeman. De Blasio said the action by “some individual officers” disrespected the families of Detectives Wenjian Liu, 32, and Rafael Ramos, 40, who were shot dead on December 20. “I cannot understand why anyone would do such a thing in a context like that,” he told a news conference a day after Liu’s funeral. “They were disrespectful to the people of this city who in fact honour the work of the NYPD,” he added.

Tens of thousands of police officers attended funerals a week apart for Liu and Ramos, who were killed by a black gunman claiming to be avenging the deaths of African-Americans during recent confrontations with police. At Ramos’s funeral last week, hundreds of officers turned away from the mayor and a small number defied instructions from Bratton by repeating the action at Liu’s funeral on Sunday. Alleged abuser in NZ Tasmanian detectives are preparing a case for prosecutors after interviewing a former teacher accused of sexually abusing boys in the 1960s. Ronald Thomas was named during a public hearing in Hobart of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Former students of the city’s exclusive Hutchins boys’ school gave evidence that the 1960s music teacher had abused them. The hearing was told Mr Thomas was dead. However, now aged 77, Mr Thomas is living in a rural part of New Zealand’s North Island. - AAP

A study of fit amateur cyclists aged 55 to 79 found that many were physically and biologically much younger than most people of the same age. Canterbury is on the verge of a 20th century-style drought with the southern region the driest it has been in a decade, forcing farmers to sell surplus stock and leading to restrictions on irrigation as the area waits for rain. Soil moisture in eastern and southern Canterbury is between severely and extremely drier than normal, while the outlook for rain remains light, according to data from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa). The region, which suffered crippling droughts through the 1970s to 1990s, is the driest it has been in a decade, Ivon Hurst, Federated Farmers’ South Canterbury president, told BusinessDesk. “We are in what you would call a drought - not an emergency, official drought where the government has to come in and give assistance, but there is no moisture in the ground, we have a consistently dry weather pattern,” Hurst said. “If we do get rain at this stage then we’re saved and we’ll have a good season, but I very much doubt that - the weather pattern is too stable. “It’s got the same feel as the big droughts we had in the last century.” The New Zealand government declares droughts on the advice from the Ministry for Primary

Auckland’s average house sale price rose to a new record in December as sales volumes for the month surged to a 12-year high amid tight supply, according to the city’s largest real estate agency. House sales climbed 28.5 per cent to 1050 in December from the year earlier month, their highest level for the typically shorter December trading month since 2002, according to Auckland real estate agency Barfoot & Thompson.

The housing market in New Zealand’s largest city has been gathering steam following a soft patch around last year’s September general election. December’s average price increased 8.4 per cent to a record $758,891 from the year earlier month while the number of properties on Barfoot & Thompson’s books at the end of the month declined 16 per cent to a decade low of 2500, the agency said. “It was our busiest December in the last 10 years with demand never being higher,

New Zealand Oil & Gas, the exploration company, says the Pateke4H well in the Tui oilfield off the Taranaki coast will boost the field’s reserves by less than initially thought. The Wellington-based company and partners AWE and Pan Pacific Petroleum expect the well to lift Tui’s recoverable reserves by 2.4 million barrels gross, of which a net 660,000 barrels are attributable to NZOG, it said in a statement. Of that, 1.9 million barrels come from Pateke-4H itself and an additional 500,000 barrels from other Tui areas as a result of extending the field’s life. The initial evaluation of the resource estimated 2.5 million barrels, of which NZOG’s share would have been 687,500 barrels. Global oil prices have plunged in recent months, exacerbated by OPEC resisting calls to reduce their supply. - NZME

Press to seal. ■ Cut the rolls into thirds or quarters with a sharp knife and place seamside down on the baking tray, a few centimetres apart. Repeat with remaining pastry and mince. ■ Brush the rolls all over with the egg wash, and prick the tops a few times with a fork to let the steam escape during cooking. Sprinkle with seeds. There’s more to salad than lettuce

ummer means salads, but there’s a lot more to a bowl of salad than the traditional lettuce-based mix. Living on lettuce might be fine, but if you want to boost your daily intake of vegetables, there’s nothing easier in the summer than turning those vegetables into a salad – with or without meat.

Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/2 C olive oil 125g feta cheese, diced Toasted pita bread, for serving ■ Place salad ingredients in bowl. ■ In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the lemon juice, garlic, 1t salt and 1t pepper. ■ Slowly whisk in the olive oil to make an emulsion. ■ Pour the dressing over the salad, tossing gently to coat all the vegetables. ■ Add the feta, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and toss gently. ■ Serve the salad with the toasted pita bread.

Surimi pasta salad 1C cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 C kalamata olives 1 handful rocket leaves Zest and juice of 1 large lemon Salt Black pepper, freshly ground to taste 3 spring onions, thinly sliced 1/2 C roasted almonds, chopped 200g penne pasta 250g surimi mix ■ Boil the pasta until al dente in plenty of well-salted boiling water. ■ Drain and toss with 4T of lemonflavoured olive oil. Cool ■ Combine with surimi and toss well. Season.

Lentil, beetroot and feta salad

■ Combine all ingredients except salad greens. ■ Arrange alternate layers of salad greens and bean mixture on a platter. ■ Scatter with fresh basil or parsley. Serve with crusty bread.

Bean and ham salad 250g green beans, trimmed 425g can four-bean mix, well drained 100g feta, diced 1C cooked diced ham or cooked chicken 1/2 C cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 red onion, finely sliced 3C salad leaves 1T fresh basil or parsley leaves 1/2 C vinaigrette

2 carrots, peeled and sliced into fine ribbons using a vegetable peeler 1 can chickpeas, 390g, drained 1 red onion, peeled and diced 1/2 telegraph cucumber, cut into long julienne slices 3/4 C fresh coriander red pepper Dressing 2t sesame oil 2T mint sauce 3T fish sauce 2T lime juice 1 red chilli, finely chopped with seeds

■ Place all the salad ingredients into a large bowl and mix well. ■ Drizzle the dressing over the ingredients.

Cous cous, pumpkin and cashew nut salad 1C cous cous 1/2 C corn kernels 1 red capsicum, finely chopped 600g pumpkin, chopped into small chunks 1 red onion, sliced 6T orange juice 2T lime juice 1T balsamic vinegar 2T olive oil 2T cashew nuts, toasted

■ Roast pumpkin and onion slices for about 30 minutes, until soft and tender. ■ Combine juices, vinegar and oil to make the dressing. ■ Combine all other ingredients in a large bowl, add the dressing and toss well to combine. ■ Eat warm or chilled.

Middle Eastern salad 4 spring onions, white and green parts, thinly sliced 450g ripe tomatoes, seeded, cored and diced 1 cucumber, halved lengthwise, seeded and diced 390g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1/3 C chopped fresh parsley 1/3 C chopped fresh mint leaves 1/3 C torn fresh basil leaves 1/4 C freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 large cloves garlic, minced

2C organic brown lentils 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed 4T extra virgin olive oil 2T root ginger, chopped 2t cumin seeds 2t turmeric 2t mild curry powder 3/4 C red wine vinegar 4 spring onions, sliced 1C celery, diced 450g roasted baby beetroot, chopped 250g feta, diced 1/2 C fresh coriander, chopped ■ Cook the lentils in boiling water until tender, allow 30 to 40 minutes. ■ Drain and place in a large bowl to cool. ■ Saute the onion and garlic in olive oil for three minutes. ■ Add the ginger, spices and curry powder. Stir in the vinegar and boil. ■ Pour the hot vinegar mixture over the cooled lentils. Mix well.

Midweek Munchies

■ Blanch green beans by plunging into boiling water for 2-3 minutes ■ Drain and cool quickly by rinsing in cold water.

■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Cover cous cous with an equal quantity of boiling water or stock in a bowl. ■ Cover and leave for five minutes, before fluffing with a fork.

Seeds crash at Classic A third seed has fallen at the ASB Classic, continuing the run of upsets at the Auckland tournament. Former world No2 Svetlana Kuznetsova has been beaten by Czech qualifier Lucie Hradecka 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 in a match lasting almost two and a half hours. Hradecka was good value for the win, overcoming a bright start by Kuznetsova to record the second win by a qualifier yesterday. The 153-ranked Czech will face popular Auckland visitor Julia Goerges in the second round. Meanwhile, 2009 ASB Classic finalist Elena Vesnina has also progressed to the next round, beating France’s Kristina Mladenovic 7-6 6-2. In brief Kane Williamson’s 242 not out against Sri Lanka is his first test double century. He is the 14th New Zealander to achieve the feat. It is his ninth test ton. Only Martin Crowe (17 centuries), John Wright and Ross Taylor (12 each), Nathan Astle and Brendon McCullum (11 each) have scored more. Williamson has the highest test average, 45.96, of any New Zealand batsman with a minimum of 20 innings. At 208, Williamson became the fastest New Zealand batsman to 3000 test runs (71 innings) eclipsing Martin Crowe (73 innings) and Ross Taylor (75). Williamson’s partnership with BJ Watling of 365 unbroken is the world record for the sixth wicket, eclipsing the 352 of Watling and Brendon McCullum against India last year on the same ground. Watling’s 142 not out is his fourth test century, and his highest. Only McCullum, with five, has scored more test centuries for New Zealand as a specialist wicketkeeper. - NZME

Bill Allnut hits towards a hoop as the Waireka Croquet Club got back on the lawn for the second half of the summer yesterday. It’s set to be a big few months for one of the club’s youngest members, Methven teenager Edmund Fordyce. He is busy contesting the New Zealand National Golf Croquet Tournament in Christchurch this week. The youngster teamed up with 24-year-old Duncan Dixon to win the doubles plate after the pair narrowly missed the semifinals. In the singles he finished fifth out of 10 in his pool and is set to play in the plate from today. Fordyce has a wild card entry to represent New Zealand at the World Under 21 Golf Croquet Championships in Christchurch in February – along with Waireka club mate Andrew Hawthorne, who was given one of New Zealand’s Membership nominations before he defends his Arthur Ross Association Croquet Title in March in Wellington.

WATER CONSERVATION CHANGES

In summer, exceptional demand for water can sometimes limit the ability of our schemes to consistently deliver water to all properties at the required pressure. Water conservation measures are used to even out demand and enable residents to continue to enjoy reasonable use of water for essential and nonessential purposes. Ashburton District Council advises those residents connected to Council water schemes that time restricted water measures are now in place until further notice. You can now only use your hose between 6.00pm and midnight on alternate days. Mount Somers is on emergency water management and water usage is only permitted for essential use. Hosing is not permitted at any time on the Dromore, Methven Springfield & Montalto water schemes. For more information about water conservation measures visit www.ashburtondc.govt.nz.

You might notice some road works when you’re out on the road this holiday season. This is because summer is the time of year when conditions are right for upgrading roads. We have the fourth largest road network in the country and Council is committed to ensuring all roads are maintained to the right standard. $6 million has been approved this year for resurfacing and rehabilitation projects on the districts roading network.

HAVE YOUR SAY Ashburton District Council’s draft Development & Financial Contributions Policy is now available for community consultation. The policy details the approach Council will take to ensure developers pay a fair share of the costs associated with providing additional infrastructure capacity specifically to cater for future new development. Council wants to hear what you think of the proposed policy. The policy and accompanying information can be found on Council’s website, the Ashburton Library, or the Council Office. Submissions close at 5.00pm on Friday 16 January 2015.

Some plumbing fittings have potential for minute traces of metals to accumulate in water that has been in the fitting for several hours.

Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends you run a mugful of water through your drinking water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissolved from plumbing fittings.

Mid Canterbury are hoping for clear skies for the South Island Primary Schools’ Tournament in Blenheim next week. Archie Redfern will play in his third primary tournament and captain a balanced team capable of making the most of a friend-

ly draw if the weather allows. They meet the hosts Marlborough on opening day – a team they have already convincingly beaten this summer. Dunedin Metro pose a big challenge on day two before matches against Nelson, Buller and Otago Country. Redfern is the only returning

player from last year when rain washed out two days’ play. The team has produced some solid results to date and with a final training session tomorrow before a warm-up game against South Canterbury at the Ashburton Domain Oval on Friday they should be ready to fire on Monday, with a strong start to

Unless Sri Lanka pull off what would be the highest successful fourth innings run chase in the Basin Reserve’s history, New Zealand will have completed six successive test series either won or drawn.
