Staff at the Tinwald Domain’s heated outdoor swimming pool will be battening down the hatches for an influx of swimmers this week as doors close for two weeks on the EA Networks Centre pool complex.

The centre’s four pools will be off limits to the public until 5.45am on January 21 while routine maintenance works, including grouting and sealant replacement, is carried out on three of the four pools. Maintenance work will also be carried out in changing rooms.

While some might question the timing of the closure, Ashburton District Council service delivery

group manager Neil McCann said data on swimmer numbers collected over past years indicated this was the quietest period of the year.

“While it might seem contradictory, the height of summer and the school holidays, this time does not appear to attract more visitors or even sustain the same number we usually see at other times of the year,” he said.

Learning new skills at summer school

Methven has become New Zealand’s adult education hot spot this week with the annual Methven Summer School attracting students from around the country.

Across 20 subjects, hundreds of people are spending their summer break learning new skills ranging from beekeeping and bread making to photography and painting.

For the organising committee, it’s always a big moment when the first classes start, it means the months of planning have done their job, said chairwoman Sandy Redmond.

“We’ve got all the systems in place and it’s all rolling nicely and that’s always a good feeling. Every one seems to be really positive and happy,” she said.

Virtually every class is full and some were fully subscribed within a few days of registrations opening, Redmond said.

Home cured meats tutor Paddy Kennedy had a full class for his two days at the school and said not only did his students enjoy learning new skills, he was also enjoying learning from them, he said.

Over their two days in the classroom, his students had cured five different flavours of bacon, made pickled pork and yesterday were looking forward to making sausages.

“I’m picking there will be a few barbecues when this is finished,” he said.

A no-holds-barred session where the pantry was wide open, saw some exciting ideas that Kennedy admits he might be using in his shop.

“It’s things like this the good ideas come from.”

Oamaru stone carving tutor Peter Green said he’d been impressed by the creativity of his students, all but one of whom were new to the

craft. “I’m really pleased with their progress,” he said.

Oamaru stone was his medium of choice because students did not require any special equipment, they could use tools usually found in a home workshop.

A small koru was created by each student during the first morning to try out basic carving skills and from there they were able to create something of their own design, Green said.

“I said to them, explore your creative ideas.”

Each finished piece was sealed to ensure it was waterproof.

Green works full time as a sculptor and creates trophies for sports awards and other events. He said there is also a growing market for Oamaru stone carvings as memorial stones in the Ashburton cemetery.

Providing these are properly sealed they will last for many years, he said.

A young man had a lucky escape on Friday afternoon when a load of hay on his truck and trailer unit burst into flames.

The Ryal Bush truck driver was travelling on State Highway One near Fairton when he noticed smoke. He pulled off the road, stopped and grabbed a fire extinguisher, but the hay was well alight, said the company’s Ashburton manager Chad Stewart.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but an investigation will get under way today, Stewart said.

“There could be a few different reasons so it’s all speculation at the moment.”

The truck and trailer unit was

destroyed and that cuts fleet numbers as the cartage business is about to hit peak season.

A replacement vehicle will be drawn from the company’s southern pool, he said.

What was more important, Stewart said, was that the driver, who’d been with the company since he left school, had escaped unhurt.

“The truck’s replaceable, our driver is not. We’re just glad he got out of it. He’s a young guy and it’s really thrown him; it’ll take him a few days to get past this,” he said.

In his years in the transport industry, Stewart said this was the first time he’d seen a fire start in a truck load of hay.

State Highway 1 was closed for a short time during the incident.

Lifelong learning taking Greta to Jerusalem

Tinwald pool braces for influx of swimmers

Greta Hampton is passionate about lifelong learning and is heading to Israel this month to the International School for Holocaust studies. She shares with reporter Sue Newman her desire to ensure her Ashburton College history students understand the impact of the Holocaust on the modern world.

W

hen an opportunity comes along to chase a dream, you have to grab it with both hands, says Greta Hampton.

The Ashburton College social science and history teacher will shortly be winging her way to Israel where she will spend three weeks as part of a group study programme on the Holocaust and its impact on the modern world.

She’s been fascinated by that dark period in modern history for many years and this year introduced the Holocaust into her Year 11 history programme. She believes that history cannot be a subject that is seen as something unrelated to students’ lives, instead it must also be relevant and be something they can understand in context of their own lives.

To add the personal touch to their Holocaust studies, she brought several second generation holocaust survivors to school to talk to students.

Largely it’s a topic for Year 11, but this year she’s hoping to introduce an element of the Holocaust into her programme for Year 9.

She hopes the three-week study course in Jerusalem will provide her with new skills she can use to teach the topic.

“History always needs to be taught in a way that’s meaningful, it’s just not about the facts and figures, it’s about the people and the stories about the people.

The Jews refused to give up and that’s important to understand.

Greta gained her place on the study programme through the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand.

She is one of 27 Kiwi teachers who will be part of the programme, chosen from 180 who applied for a place.

While there might be a few opportunities to be a tourist, she knows the days will be long, with many lectures as well as visits to some of the most important sites, such as Schindler’s Grave and the

Holocaust Museum.

“I know this will be life-changing personally and professionally. I’ll be coming back with knowledge I can pass on to my students, knowledge that’s so important and knowledge that’s still relevant today,” she said.

Greta has been interested in the Holocaust since she was young. Teaching saw that passion grow and having her own children saw it ignite.

“It’s about the people, the children and what they went through, I want my children to

grow up in a world without prejudice,” she said.

She is no stranger to overseas study programmes, having travelled to Korea in 2016 through the Asia Foundation New Zealand to study the culture and history of the country.

While she’s the one who’ll be studying over summer, Greta said the knowledge she gains will be of huge benefit to her students.

In addition, she said it was good for students to see their teachers taking opportunities to extend their own learning.

“I’m passionate about lifelong learning and about being the best teacher I can be.”

She wants to be a changemaker in the lives of her students.

“If I can inspire one person to learn a bit more about the Holocaust then I’m doing something right.”

She’s been a member of the college’s staff for 10 years and said she is always looking for opportunities to improve her knowledge and upskill as a teacher.

“I’m trying to build the history programmes to include topics that are enjoyable, relevant and meaningful for the kids and the Holocaust definitely fits that brief.”

Winning a place on the study trip saw Greta sign on for hours of background reading.

“Some of that is pretty heavy but I’m also watching a lot of films and documentaries based around the Holocaust. I want to be in a position to get the best out of this as I can.”



From P1 Closing at this time also meant the heated outdoor pool in the Tinwald Domain was a good alternative for people wanting to swim, McCann said.

“If we’d scheduled this work for winter months, then swimmers would have had no alternative options and a number of swimming programmes would have to have been cancelled.”

During the closure, the Tinwald Pool will open for longer hours, from 9am to 7pm. Learn to swim classes will also operate from that pool during that time.

Maintenance work will not affect the complex’s main pool but this cannot be used because pool changing facilities will be closed.

This pool, however, has been hired to a Christchurch swim squad for training, but they will not have access to changing facilities and no lifeguards will be on duty.

Holders of EA Networks silver pool memberships will not be charged for that membership during the closure and those with a gold or platinum membership will receive a credit on their membership fee in the following cycle.

The centre’s gym and café facilities will not be affected. The stadium area will close later in the month for a short time for maintenance.



Walkers on track for record The Mid Canterbury section of the Te Araroa Trail will host some special visitors in the new year as a Dunedin family walks the length of New Zealand.

T

wo Dunedin children who are nearing the halfway point of New Zealand’s national Te Araroa Trail are on track to become the youngest ever to walk the length of the country.

Jonathan, 6, and Elizabeth, 9, set out from Cape Reinga with their parents Chris and Jorinde Rapsey in October, and expect to complete the epic 3000km walking journey down to Bluff in March. The family were planning to spend Christmas Day on the Queen Charlotte section of the track.

“At the start the children were tired and found some parts hard but now they are loving it,” Jorinde Rapsey said. “It amazes me that at the end of a long day Jonathan still jumps around full of energy.”

The family was averaging around 2km a day and had even clocked up more than 30km on a few occasions, she said. Both children began the journey without a pack, but by the time they reached Auckland Elizabeth was adamant she should have one, so they purchased a pack for her and she has carried it ever since.

At one point, in Northland, the family accepted a short ride along a road section from Puhoi to Wenderholm after a local stopped to pick them up. However, the children complained afterwards that the drive would mean they hadn’t walked the whole trail once they got to the end, so the family retraced their steps and did the kilometre again on foot.

Rapsey said the trip had gone smoothly and joked that deciding which flavour of muesli bar to eat each day had proven to be the only contentious issue.

She said Chris and her were inspired to walk the trail after

venturing into Fiordland with the children twice in the first half of the year and being amazed at how well they did on the Hollyford Pyke Loop and a five-day return tramp to Monowai Hut. The family are renting out their house to help fund the trip, and the children have been able to keep up their home schooling while on the trail.

“We’ve been doing a lot of maths problems for fun to work out how much of the track is left, how far we’ve come, and how much further we’ve got to go each day. It’s amazing the questions we get,” Rapsey said.

She was confident they would complete the trail and was looking forward to spending Christmas Day on the Queen Charlotte Track, “with some extra yummy food”.

“thrilled” to hear of the Rapsey family’s journey and commended them for showing other people what was possible.

“If these guys can do it then so many other Kiwis can do it too.

Whether it’s just walking a section of the trail on the weekend or walking the length of the country in one go, age is no barrier.”

Weatherall said the number of people expected to walk the full length of the trail this summer was likely to exceed 1000 for the first time, with hundreds of thousands more walking individual sections in their weekends, after work, or during their holiday break.

The number of Kiwis walking the trail is on the rise, with around a third of all through-walkers coming from New Zealand, compared to around one in five in 2016/2017.

Some of the most popular sections this summer would be the

Tongariro Crossing in the central North Island, the Paekakariki Escarpment Loop on the Kapiti Coast, the Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds and the Motatapu Alpine Track near Wanaka.

Weatherall’s advice to anybody walking the trail this year was to enjoy it, wear high visibility vests when walking on road sections, and to be respectful of others by taking home rubbish and camping in permitted areas. He urged all walkers to take a hard-copy paper map with them, rather than relying solely on their phones or an app, and to be prepared for changing weather conditions.

“Te Araroa is our national trail and it’s there for all New Zealanders. It’s a great way of connecting with our country, seeing the landscape, and reflecting on the outdoor culture and lifestyle we are so lucky to enjoy as Kiwis.”

Object thought to be satellite Was it a comet, UFO, space junk, meteor or burning plane?

According to a local expert the object seen flying through our sky on Saturday night was probably the remains of a Russian satellite – and it there’s a chance a small part of it might be sitting in someone’s backyard.

Thousands of excited Kiwis from Whangarei to Nelson quickly took to social media on Saturday night to post pictures and video of the bright object that streaked through our dusk sky, and then seemed to disappear.

There’s been much speculation since then about what the object was – and what happened to it once it vanished from view – but

according to a leading space expert it was almost certainly the remains of an out-of-control Russian missile defence satellite.

Theoretical cosmologist Professor Richard Easther, the head of physics at the University of Auckland, said he was 99 per cent certain that it was the Russian Kosmos 2430 satellite – and that the Russians appear to have lost control of it.

He said it was among several satellites sent up to Earth orbit by Russia to protect against missile attacks, primarily by the United States.

“The US has a similar constellation of satellites.”

Easther said it conceivable that

some of the satellite, which had weighed nearly two tonnes, had survived the intense heat of its dive through the atmosphere and landed in someone’s backyard.

The kinds of debris to look for would be large chunks of glass or scorched metal.

Easther said several satellites returned to Earth each year. Notable ones included the US Skylab and a Russian satellite that contaminated part of Canada.

Debris from Skylab was found in Western Australia after the US space station crashed back to Earth in 1979.

The previous year, the Soviet reconnaissance satellite Kosmos 954 scattered radioactive debris

over northern Canada when it re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere.

A fault before re-entry had prevented the safe separation of its onboard nuclear reactor.

Easther said Kosmos 2430 was known to be passing over New Zealand at the time of the bright object last night. The proof that it was the cause would be in sky watchers reporting its absence.

If it had been a controlled descent, it would have been manoeuvred to splash into the Southern Ocean.

The fact its re-entry occurred over New Zealand implied that “the Russians lost control of it”.

2018 road toll rises to 382 A second passenger has died after a crash last month – taking last year’s road toll up to 382.

The 29-year-old man died at Wellington Regional Hospital on Saturday after being seriously injured in a car crash on December 20 in Nelson.

The mother of the victim, who did not want to be identified, told the NZ Herald her son was a passenger and was thrown out of the back of the vehicle after it reportedly lost control, left the road and rolled.

“We’re all just devastated by this,” she said through tears.

“He was not the driver – he was a victim.”

Last year’s road toll is the deadliest on our roads since 2009, when 384 people lost their lives.

The death toll is taken according to when a crash or accident occurred, not when the person died.

The young man was one of several people injured in the crash in the early hours of that Thursday on Whakatu Drive, in Stoke, Nelson.

Those injured were aged in their 20s and 30s, authorities said at the time.

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 12.30am.

He is the second person to have died in the same crash; after a 25-year-old woman from the West Coast was killed.

She was one of three passengers thrown from the vehicle after it reportedly lost control, left the road and rolled. The driver received serious injuries.

About half an hour before that crash, just after midnight in Auckland, a person was killed after a car hit a power pole in Green Bay. A second person was critically injured in the crash.

An Ashburton justice of the peace has been recognised for his 40 years of service to the district.

Angus Johnson was sworn in as a JP on November 20, 1978 at the Ashburton District Courthouse, and has held many roles in his time.

He served as president of the Ashburton Justice of the Peace Association, later taking up the role of training officer for new JPs. Johnson was recently presented with a certificate from the chief executive secretary of the justice, Andrew Bridgman.

The certificate was presented on his behalf by assistant registrar Noel Lowe.

Johnson has now accepted the status of JP retired.

District swelters The Ashburton District has been on a weather rollercoaster over the first six days of the new year. While day one logged a modest summer maximum of 24.2°C, on three days the mercury surged over the 30°C, topped by yesterday’s scorcher.

Graham’s Weather Station in Ashburton recorded the day’s high of 34.7°C a 3.45pm. That eclipsed the 30.8°C recorded on January 2 and 30.1°C on January 3.

Yesterday’s high was significantly lower, at just 21.9°C.

Man missing The family of a man last seen on New Year’s Eve has made a public appeal to help find him. The last time anyone saw Theon Vernon was midday on Monday in Waihi.

Police have confirmed a missing person’s report was received yesterday. Police have described Vernon, 23, as Caucasian and of slim build. He also has one stretched ear.

Baking a popular request

Pauline Woolley is an excellent baker, so when several requests for home baking made their way onto the Christmas Wishes for the Elderly List, she didn’t hesitate to whip out her cake mixer and get started.

Once the baking was completed and beautifully wrapped, Pauline’s grandaughters Lucy and Greta were only too happy to help her deliver the homemade goodies to four local recipients.

Making Estelle’s wish come true

By HeatHer Mackenzie Although Ashburton Guardian staff member Cushla Harborne had never met Merv and Estelle Jones before, she was more than happy to go around to their house and wash windows for them.

“I was involved in granting Christmas Wishes for the Elderly last year and enjoyed it, so I volunteered again this year.” Cushla said.

As they worked together the conversation flowed easily creating a lovely working atmosphere, she said.

“They are such a lovely couple, I liked chatting to them. Mr Jones told me he was turning 90 soon, I hope he has a fantastic birthday and many more to come.”

Thanks to some hard work by Katelyn Hogg, Ashburton’s Graham Gunn has super-clean gutters on his home.

In the past Graham Gunn had thought about putting his name forward for a Christmas wish, but didn’t want to bother anyone.

However, after yet another rainy day with his gutters overflowing, he changed his mind and asked for help.

“I’m really pleased I did. I will admit I thought that no one will want to come and clean out my gutters It’s such a dirty mucky job,” he said.

No sooner had he put his name forward when he was phoned to say someone would be there the next day.

“The morning dawned overcast, dull and a bit rainy, so I thought she would wait for a better day, but no, there she was at 11.30am sharp as planned, bucket in hand and a smile on her face. She had it all done in under an hour. She even got my oven going again. Somehow I had changed the setting on it, so she switched it back to where it should be, it’s going perfectly now.”

Graham said he would be putting his name forward for help again next year.

Three die in shooting Three men have been fatally shot and four injured when a brawl at a popular Los Angeles-area bowling alley and karaoke bar erupted into gunfire that had terrified patrons running for their lives.

Police in the coastal city of Torrance responded at the weekend to calls of shots fired at the Gable House Bowl, which offers bowling, laser tag and an arcade. They found seven people with gunshot wounds.

Three men were pronounced dead at the scene and two were taken to a hospital, Sgt Ronald Harris said. Two other men were struck by gunfire but “opted to seek their own medical attention”.

Authorities have not identified the victims nor suspects or released details about what led to the shooting. But witnesses said it stemmed from a fight between two large groups.

Dwayne Edwards, 60, of Los Angeles, said he received a call from his nephew that his 28-year-old son, Astin Edwards, was one of those killed.

His nephew told him his son was attempting to break up a fight when a gunman “just started unloading”.

“I’m thinking this is a dream and I’ll wake up,” Edwards said. “He was a good kid. I don’t understand it.”

A grieving mother said her 28-year-old son, Robert Meekins, was also trying to break up the fight and that Meekins and Astin Edwards were friends.

“They were friends so I know he probably jumped in and helped Astin and whoever he was with ... but I don’t think my son deserves to die,” Anglean Hubbard said.

The chase is over for Paul The Chase is over for quiz star Paul Sinha, after he proposed to his partner Oliver this week, according to the Daily Mail.

Announcing the news on Twitter, the quiz master wrote: “’I proposed today. He said yes. Thus starts yet another diet.” But he later deleted the Tweet in an apparent bid to keep his partner’s identity secret.

Sinha has previously revealed his partner is a fellow quizzer called Oliver and they are in an open relationship – but little else is known about him. According to Sinha, he has always been openly gay, however, Chase viewers only picked up on the fact two years ago.

“I grabbed my niece and started running toward the far end of the bowling alley,” he said. “As we were running, we heard 15 shots.”

Gas leak blamed for fire A gas leak in a heating system at an Escape Room has been blamed for a fire that killed five teenage girls and injured a man in Poland.

The bodies of the 15-year-old victims were found in Koszalin, northern Poland, after firefighters extinguished a blaze in an adjacent room.

Prosecutors said carbon monoxide inhalation was the likely cause of the deaths.

A 26-year-old man employed at the location was hospitalised with burns.

Koszalin prosecutor Ryszard Gasiorowski said a leak in the bottled gas heating system probably caused the fire.

Earlier, firefighters blamed faulty electric wiring and substandard security pro-

cedures. Gasiorowski said the fire probably broke out in the reception room and blocked the employee’s way to evacuate the girls.

Autopsies will be carried out to confirm the cause of their deaths.

The Escape Room game sees players locked inside a room or building and they must find clues that help them get out.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has sent condolences to the victims’ relatives.

The school that the teenagers attended was extending counselling and support to their friends and colleagues.

The girls, friends from one school class, were celebrating one of their birthdays.

A woman said to have been in a vegetative state for at least a decade at a private health facility in the US is reported to have recently given birth, sparking a police investigation.

Reports first emerged last week that a woman gave birth on December 29 at a Hacienda HealthCare facility in Phoenix where staff were unaware she was pregnant. It is understood the woman, who has not been identified, was the victim of a near-drowning more than 10 years ago.

Reports said she was heard to be moaning and the baby’s head was starting to emerge when a nurse came in.

It is believed that the baby is in good health.

“None of the staff were aware that she was pregnant until she was pretty much giving birth,” a source said.

Following the initial reports, Hacienda HealthCare and state officials issued brief statements about the situation, expressing concern and describing reviews being conducted and steps being taken.

But they did not specifically confirm the reported pregnancy and birth.

Phoenix Police Department spokesman Sergeant Tommy Thompson said only that the “matter is under investigation”.

He declined to confirm whether the investigation involved a possible sex crime.

Award for Kidman Nicole Kidman has won an Australian Academy Cinema Television Arts international supporting actress award in what could be an omen ahead of the Golden Globes. Kidman won for her performance in Boy Erased and paid tribute to the film’s Australian director Joel Edgerton. Kidman is a dual threat this Hollywood awards season with Boy Erased and her stunning lead performance in Destroyer receiving nods at numerous awards shows. Kidman is nominated for a Golden Globe today for Destroyer, although Lady Gaga, for A Star Is Born, is expected to win the best actress in a drama Globe.

Ed Sheeran

Sheeran set to face trial Ed Sheeran’s fate is in the hands of a jury after a US judge ruled there were “substantial similarities” between his song and a Marvin Gaye soul classic.

Sheeran looks set to face trial in New York over accusations that he copied the 1973 Gaye Let’s Get it On, hit in his own 2014 song, Thinking Out Loud. The 27-year-old Yorkshireman was sued in June by Kathryn Townsend Griffin, who claims to own a partial copyright in Gaye’s song, as an heir of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote it. Sheeran asked Judge Louis Stanton to rule on the issue without trial, arguing that the two songs were not substantially similar.

KIWI LIFE AND ITS PERKS

W

hile life is getting tougher now each day due to winter season, chilly morning and early sunsets, we might as well keep that aside and enjoy the bright side of life in the Kiwi land.

New Zealand is an amazing country that leaves you in of its beauty, lush green mountains, prestine landscapes, magical lakes and clever sheep to name a few.

Blending into Kiwi life is rather interesting each day and it is fascinating to learn more as you grow mentally and emotionally in the country.

Driving on the left side of the road, with the steering wheel on the right, is one of the more obvious things which is opposite of the Philippines life that I grew up with or in Dubai, UAE where I have worked and lived for the past nine years.

Kiwis have a very big heart for sports and as a newcomer, I do find that amazing!

In a relatively small country, it feels like half of the four million people in the country, or probably more, are active into sports.

Whenever I watch the television, half an hour of the news is about the international sports games that Kiwis are involved in.

Not only does that promote good health physically and mentally, but Kiwis definitely have the winning attitude.

Now, sport is not the icing of the cake but rather their unique “team sports names” which all revolves around black, white, silver, caps, sox or ferns such as the country’s national sports – rugby and it’s called the All Blacks and some other teams like Black Ferns, Silver Ferns, Black Caps, Black Sox, IronBlacks, All Whites, Ice Ferns and many more. It is very uniform indeed!

In addition, Kiwis have a few more perks that newcomers may find intriguing: * Mailbox – New Zealand is one of the few countries that I am aware of which still embraces the old style mailing system, although most establishments like banks or mobile companies have now started charging customers for paper bills, but still no one can beat this old but good way. * Honesty box – some farmers sell their crops like eggs or fruit outside farms or their houses and leave a box there where buyers can just drop the cash inside while picking up the items. A bit of a gamble but amazingly some Kiwis are still doing it. * Volunteering – there are thousands of volunteering groups in all industries around New Zealand alone and it is fascinating that heaps of people have a great heart to help other people (especially newcomers), communities or neighboring countries who are in need. It could be an advantage for newcomers in their job search if they are a member of any of these volunteering groups, so jump in! * 4WD/ute/trucks – Many of the cars you see on the road are 4WD. That is because the main industry in New Zealand is farming and these vehicles are handy when they are carting firewood, farm/construction materials

or small machinery or towing a trailer, also outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, etc. * One-way bridge – I believe most tourists are used to two-way roads or bridges. * Raising up the point finger while driving – I find that engaging because I’ve seen many locals do that on the road or on your street. It just means “hello” to you while they are continously driving. * Kind strangers – I have bumped into many strangers along the way in our trips to the North Island or in town. One instance is a kind grandpa in Wellington. We stayed for a night near the beach and while cooking breakfast the next morning, a local talked to us briefly. When he realised we were struggling to find a holiday park where they allowed campers to just use their paid showers for a bath, he immediately offered his house so we can have a shower before going back on the road to Auckland.

Not very often you meet someone like him offering his shower to a stranger, is it? * Drive-thru for construction materials - how cool is that! You can just drive through Mitre10 and buy your materials for your DIY construction project. * DIY house projects – most Kiwis prefer to build their own projects like sheds, fence, etc. On television, most of the shows are about building or designing your own house. * Mancave – Kiwi men often have a mancave so if you hear

that for the first time, do not enter into their sacred room – just kidding! A mancave is like their workshop, games room or drinking room. * Mature workers in supermarkets – I am amazed and salute the companies who hire mature locals in the supermarkets or shops eg Bunnings Warehouse, Warehouse, Countdown, New World, etc. So retirement isn’t in their vocabulary after all. * Shops close at 4-5pm – there are many small towns within the country and 95 per cent of the shops close around 4-5pm, totally different from I grew up and last worked (Dubai) where those times are just the beginning of a lively, fun night. * Moving houses – houses literally can move from one location to another, being transported by a big truck occupying the entire road, so if you happen to encounter one, make sure you are as far as left or right as possible to let them pass. * Buy and sell groups – Kiwis move apartments often due to work relocation locally and overseas or a change in personal circumstances. You can find heaps of items (clothing or households) for sale on Facebook and TradeMe. So if you are new and bought few clothes when you moved here, it won’t hurt buying from any of them for a starter. * Second-hand shops for a cause – in Ashburton alone there are about five shops (Red Cross, Salvation Army, Hospice, St John, St Vincent de Paul) where you can

purchase clothing or household items for a reasonable price plus the proceeds go to charity, so I do recommed that to all newcomers! * Bonfire during outdoor parties – for most celebrations held in rural areas where paddocks are big enough, Kiwis tend to have a bonfire which I find really cool actually, saving energy at night plus it creates a romantic and cozy atmosphere * Paying for your meal – often when Kiwis invites you to a gathering or celebration being held in a restaurant, do not expect that the head of the party will take care of your bill, so be prepared.

In Philippines we call this KKB (kanya kanyang bayad). Being practical is the word! * Education – in Philippines, we believe in education. Even though life is tougher, as soon as the teens have finished high school, the parents expect and support their kids straight away to university no matter what the financial status is because they believe that that is the only treasure they can give to them. Over here, teens often find work straight away after high school, earn and save money then explore the world. * Freedom camping/rest areas – there are heaps of them around New Zealand, especially in the touristic locations. What’s cool about it is you can camp for the night for free after a long drive. * Campervans/house bus as home and holiday parks – there are heaps of holiday parks around NZ too, that is because renting or buying your own house is expen-

sive. Many families live in their campervans or house buses. * Weekly salaries or rents – Kiwis receives their salaries or pay their house rents per week or fortnightly. It is a bit faster here as compared to Philippines or Dubai where mostly people are paid monthly. * Pedestrian lane – Kiwis are courteous in giving way to pedestrians. * Musicians – listening to RadioNZ they feature heaps of New Zealand musicians in different genre, the only challenge is, way too many so I can’t remember a particular song or singer. * Duck shooting – during the first Saturday of the month of May I believe, the duck shooting begins, thus the Fish and Game rangers are out in the force. You have to ensure that you comply to the rules and have a gun licence.

It seems fun, as you shoot, you can cook it straight away! How cool is that! * Food or craft market – head down to these food or craft markets if you would like to find some reasonably priced items (free range eggs, jams) and unique home-made crafts by local artists. * Mince pies, fish and chips - Kiwis do love fish and chips and mince pies. I can call it one of their snack delicacies, and you can find the shops in every town as you pass by.

e all love fireworks, but apparently some countries love them more than

others.

In Holland the Dutch people celebrate the new year by launching multiple fireworks from their homes, parks and the streets.

While this is done to some degree in other countries (in New Zealand as well), the quantity is very different.

Amsterdam, the capital, looks from the sky like a war zone during that time.

The sky is lit for thousands of fireworks.

For them it’s about entire neighborhoods are coming together, wishing each other a happy and healthy new year while sharing oliebollen (Dutch Doughnuts).

Staring up at the sky and seeing fireworks everywhere you look, all promising an amazing year ahead.

It’s their way of saying goodbye to the year that’s just passed, and welcome to the new year coming in.

Young people doing what’s right T

here’s nothing more uplifting than a little unexpected human kindness or thoughtfulness.

Too often what we experience is exactly the opposite, people out for themselves, people making sure if there’s any advantage to be gained it’s theirs.

But a simple experience yesterday brought home to me just how lucky we are to live in a place where people still know right from wrong.

There’s always an uncomfortable moment for most people when they come across

money that appears to have no home. If it’s the odd coin, then most of us would look around to make sure it hadn’t dropped out of the pocket or wallet of someone nearby, and odds on, most of us would pick those few coins up and count ourselves lucky to have an unexpected dollar to two as a windfall.

We’d all like to think if it was anything more than $5 or so, we’d act differently, that we’d try to find the owner.

That might not always be possible. If the lost cash was lying on an empty street how would you reunite it with its owner, who could you leave it with in anticipation of the owner coming back to look for it?

If the amount was large, then the police station’s the obvious answer, but otherwise, what to do?

It’s heartwarming when you’re the person who’s lost the cash to find the person who found that cash did the right thing.

It might have been $40 but when that’s all that’s left in your wallet until pay day and suddenly it’s gone, then it’s a heart-sinking moment.

A round of applause to the staff at my local coffee shop. I left $40 change on the counter and when I went back several hours later it had been put aside with a note.

Three ways with trifle

■ Place 200g of the berries into a food processor with the icing sugar and blitz. Strain through a sieve to remove the pips.

■ Line a 20cm tin with plastic wrap.

■ Thinly slice (1/2 cm) a bakery jam roll, lining the bottom and sides of the tin and reserving some for the top.

■ Puree berries with icing sugar, then put through a sieve to remove the pips.

■ Fold whipped cream and puree into the custard.

■ Sprinkle the sherry over the sponge. Pour the custard mixture into the tin. Carefully place the remaining jam roll on top and freeze for 7 hours/overnight.

■ Garnish with berries and mint leaves.

lips and landslides following the devastating Kaikoura earthquake two years ago buried the Coastal Pacific track at 100 different locations along the track – some slips were so immense that the track was literally swept into the sea.

Just south of Clarence, seismic forces shifted the track by a staggering 20 metres.

After tootling through the line’s longest tunnel at Amuri Bluff, 975 metres, two hours of ever-changing and expansive shoreline vistas reveal their full glory, south and north of Kaikoura, hemmed in by sheer hillsides and the ocean’s deep azure. I was sharing the train with a diverse of mix of proud locals and wideeyed internationals, yet we were all transfixed by the seabed uplift all along the coast- some of the newest land in the world.

One-hundred-and-20 kilometres of the Kaikoura Coast was shunted up out of the ocean by between one to six metres.

In some pockets, the uplift seems subtle, as if the shoreline has been pimped up with a sweeping ornamental rock garden. Yet in other parts, like Ohau Point, Waipapa Bay and Half Moon Bay, the immensity of seismic power has profoundly reshaped the landscape.

Vast coastal rock platforms now rise above the shoreline, underwater worlds that were abruptly and violently thrust into the full above-water view.

They look other-worldly, startling, imposing – even intimidating.

The 5.5 metre uplift of such a monstrous block of underwater rock at Waipapa Bay was so

immense, that this new shelf has created its own lagoon. It’s an exposition of grand-scale natural wonder, beauty and brutality, all in one.

On the upside, the sheer scale of area-wide uplift means that sea level rise is one potential problem that Kaikoura residents no longer need to worry about.

The old adage that you see so much more by train couldn’t be more applicable to the Kaikoura Coast.

Not only does the open-air carriage give you a wrap-around perspective on the curving coast and the staggering rock formations, but the ongoing reconstruction of State Highway 1.

Even though it was reopened a year ago, major work projects continue in a bid to enhance its safety and resilience for the future.

The immensity of the challenge and the herculean achievements to date are laid bare on the train.

You could not wish for a more intimate perspective.

The cheerful spirit of being all in this together is powerfully pervasive, with motorists, train passengers and road workers routinely offering each other a friendly wave.

A new bridge on State Highway 1.

A glorious new highway makes travel easier.

shuffles past a project site at such a slow crawl, that trackside workers and Stop/Go controllers happily pose for photos and exchange a few fleeting words with passing passengers. They’ve become a tourist novelty in their own right.

The ongoing road work between Oaro and Clarence is a compelling sight, particularly around Ohau Point– where mountains have been “moved” to resurrect the highway. Part of the Seaward Kaikoura Ranges inherent charm is the fact that they seemingly explode from the ocean, soaring to a height of over 2500 metres.

The land was pushed up by seven metres here and the new road was rebuilt on new terrain, protected by a seawall.

You’ll still see abseiling teams dangling from precipitous cliff faces as they stabilise slopes.

Ohau Point now sports a brandnew safe stopping area where you can ogle the hundreds of protected fur seals draped across the rocks.

Also taking shape is the Great Wall of Ohau, a 515 metre bund that will protect road and rail traffic from rock face debris, just north of Ohau Point.

This monumental bund is taking the place of that towering

wall of shipping containers that has provided temporary protection.

Beyond admiring the natural theatre and the epic engineering prowess, another rewarding aspect to my Coastal Pacific experience was laying eyes on vast tracts of the Canterbury High Country that you don’t see from the road.

Throughout the trip, there are substantial chunks of countryside where the railway charts a very different course to the highway.

We shadowed the Hurunui River through a steep and narrow valley before spilling out close to the highway by Domett. We tootled through the gorgeous Ethelton Gorge, as the serpentine curves of the Hurunui River shimmered in the sun.

Another revelation was the bucolic charm of the Scargill Valley, picture—postcard rolling hinterland. It’s where the train line reaches its highest point, topping out at 562 metres.

Cocooned in the comfort of my brightly patterned, climate-controlled carriage with panoramic windows, I plugged in the headphones and thoroughly enjoyed the on-demand audio commentary.

The nuggets of knowledge

about passing points of interest ran the gamut from the grand and historic to the quirky bites of trivia beloved by trainspotters.

It took 70 years for the Christchurch to Picton railway line to be fully completed, with the Amuri Bluff Tunnel the final assignment to seal the deal in 1945.

Two years after one of New Zealand’s most powerful ever earthquakes, the reinstatement of the railway line for passenger trains is an equal if not greater triumph.

Revel in our nation’s guts and glory determination to stand up to and problem-solve nature’s nastiest punches, to dust ourselves off and bask in the unbridled raw beauty of the Coastal Pacific.

It’s a blessed rail journey to make the heart sing. Fairway divots fly

The first day of Saturday golf for 2019 was met by incredibly warm conditions across Mid Canterbury, making sunscreen and sunhats an absolute must. Saturday’s golf at the Ashburton Golf Club was part of their summer stableford competition and another qualifying round for their Property Brokers Shootout.

Long does it again for Breakers For the second time in three days, Shawn Long’s explosive form has led the New Zealand Breakers to a crucial 97-84 win over NBL-leading Perth in Auckland.

American centre Long poured in 33 points yesterday as the home side roared back from a narrow halftime deficit to keep themselves firmly in the playoff picture and heap more misery on the faltering Wildcats.

The Breakers dug deep to produce a dominant second half after Friday’s 104-96 defeat of the 36ers in Adelaide.

Long also starred in that game, tallying 28 points and 18 rebounds.

The powerhouse centre is a key figure if the Kiwi club are to push this season for a fifth title, having been described recently as the best big man in the NBL by Breakers coach Kevin Braswell.

An athletic presence inside, it was a rare Long three-pointer which effectively sealed the match, opening the margin to nine points with less than two minutes remaining as Perth threatened a fightback.

Long and power forward Tai Wesley were key for the Breakers when they went on a 15-point unbroken run late in the third quarter to swing the contest.

Wesley mixed 20 points with 10 rebounds to continue his fine form while American guard Patrick Richard sank 14 points.

The visitors managed just 37 per cent shooting from the field, while the Breakers shot at 50 per cent and, crucially, avoided the series of foul problems that have been plaguing them in three losses earlier this season to Perth.

Thunder score vital win over Blazers The Oklahoma City Thunder had a six-game overall losing streak to the Trail Blazers, and they had lost their last eight at the Moda Center, a streak dating back to 2014.

Proclaiming a “new year, new team,” Paul George scored 37 points as the Thunder beat the Blazers 111-109.

“We came here, we told ourselves we need to change it – and we got it done,” George said.

Russell Westbrook added 31 points for Kiwi Steven Adams’ Thunder, who held off a furious

last-minute rally by the Blazers that fell short.

Damian Lillard led Portland with 23 points and eight assists.

“I was thinking about it when I landed yesterday,” Westbrook said about the long drought.

“For me, this was personal. I wanted the streak to end.”

The Thunder trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half but pulled in front late in the third quarter and pushed the lead to 107-97 with just over 4 minutes to go on a basket by Westbrook, who

Oklahoma City, sitting in second place in the Western Conference behind the Nuggets, has won three straight, including a 107-100 victory over the Lakers on Wednesday.

The Thunder rose to 12 games over .500 for the first time this season.

Celtic’s droughtbreaker

Celtic’s Danny Hurley was the captain who had the honour of lifting Mid Canterbury Rugby’s Watters Cup in 2018.

For the Celtic Rugby Club, 2018 was one for the history books.

It was the year that they finally got their hands, and their hands alone, on Mid Canterbury Rugby’s showpiece – the Watters Cup. It had been a long 18 years since the club had last held the cup aloft as the sole winners, and 12 years since a drawn final with Southern saw the two sides share the prize.

But in 2018, it was all Celtic’s, and after such a long wait the smile on the club’s member’s faces stretched a mile wide and lasted for days afterwards.

When the final whistle went on their 28-24 win over Southern in the 2018 final, a scene many of the older members of the Mid Canterbury rugby community reported never having seen before, played out.

A massive swarm of kids dressed top to toe in green ran onto the field to congratulate their team.

For the majority of the 80 minutes before that, those kids had been in full voice, chanting and singing and cheering their team on, and if you asked some of the players after the game what sort of impact it had on them, they’d tell you it was big.

They could hear all the noise, and it spurred them on.

Having headed into the match light on experience and as the clear underdogs, Celtic started the game as anything but, scoring first and gaining the early upper hand.

But Southern were a team very

heavy on experience, with plenty of finals footy exposure in recent seasons, and they were never going to lie down.

Southern came back at Celtic to hold a narrow lead at half-time, but Celtic were hungry for the win, and came back at the Southern men to regain the lead and hold onto it until the end.

So, after the final whistle had been blown and the speeches had been listened to, it was Celtic’s curly-haired captain Danny Hurley who was the one to hold the cup proudly high above his head, with a sea of green surrounding him savouring every moment.

It was a big moment for Celtic, but it actually formed just part of what was a huge year for the club.

Celtic’s under-18 side also had a season to remember, moving to the top of the pack after years of finishing as bridesmaids.

Celtic won both the local competition and the Mid Canterbury/ South Canterbury/Ellesmere competition, going through unbeaten to topple Prebbleton in the combined competition final, and Southern in the local competition final.

The efforts of the club’s senior and under-18 teams meant that when it came to the Mid Canterbury Rugby Awards night for 2018, Celtic scooped a fair number of the awards on offer, including the teenage grade coach of the year title for the coaches of the under-18 team, Mati Morrison and Brentton Donaldson.

It had been nine years since Hampstead had last won a Watters Cup game, and after finishing the

Celtic first-five Nathan McCloy also received the MB Roulston Cup for scoring the most points in senior rugby, after a break-out season in the pivotal position, which also saw him rewarded with a spot in the Mid Canterbury rugby Heartland team.

A number of Celtic players made the Heartland cut in 2018, but those honours were relatively evenly shared amongst the clubs, with the exception of Hampstead.

But it was Hampstead that provided the other talking point in club rugby in 2018, despite only winning a couple of games.

Hampstead weren’t eyeing up a win in the Watters Cup final, they just wanted to win a round robin game, and they came agonisingly close to doing just that.

After giving Celtic a run for their money in the first half of their opening game, the score got away from them a bit, but in the games that followed the Hampstead boys really started to find their rhythm.

ing minutes. Both Methven and Rakaia had to throw everything they had at the team that had been underdogs for so long, with both teams only winning thanks to tries right on full time.

It was heartbreak for Hampstead, but at the same time it gave them hope.

They’d made such good strides in 2018 that they were keen to keep that momentum going, so weeks before Christmas Hampstead started their pre-season training for 2019.

With good numbers, and a positive feeling in the camp, hopes were high that 2019 might be the year they finally break that Watters Cup drought.

This year it would be 10 years since Hampstead last won a Watters Cup game, and players, coaches, management and anyone involved in the club were hopeful that 2019 would be their year.

Holding the Watters Cup aloft at the end of the season was every Mid Canterbury senior rugby club’s dream, and it was something that Celtic, Southern, Rakaia and Methven had all done in the past few years.

To go from not winning a game in 10 years, to holding that cup at the end of the season was probably a bridge too far in 2019 for Hampstead, but if they could notch up a win in the round robin in 2019 you could guarantee the reaction would be one to rival that of any competition winning team.

Fouche a future star

By Niall aNdersoN One of New Zealand’s most promising riders is now the national champion.

Twenty-year-old James Fouche has produced a stunning ride to crush all comers in the men’s road race, storming to victory by a remarkable three minutes and 14 seconds on the 166km Napier course.

Fouche won the Under-23 road race title last year, and claimed the Under-23 time trial championship on Friday, but yesterday took the biggest prize of his career to date, trouncing a field of experienced riders to claim the black and white national jersey.

The Team Wiggins rider spent last year racing in Europe’s top age-group races – competing in the Under-23 versions of the Giro d’Italia, Paris Roubaix, LiegeBastogne-Liege and Ronde van Vlaanderen – but yesterday he smoked riders of all ages.

“It means heaps – this is my first road elite win.

“I wanted to thank Team Wiggins for re-signing me, I wanted to give back to them – it will be cool to bring the jersey back to them,” said Fouche.

Fouche was part of an initial 12-man breakaway, and as is often the case in national championships, the early escapees proved hard to peg back.

With most competitors riding for themselves, and smaller groups clustered across the road, it meant that co-operation behind the breakaway was minimal, allowing the 12 riders to take a three and a half minute lead.

“I find this race is all about getting in the early break.

“I was gunning for that. I went right from the start,” said Fouche.

As it turned out, giving him such a gap was a mistake.

With the likes of George Bennett, Patrick Bevin, Michael Vink and Hayden McCormick making up the remnants of the peloton at three minutes down, Fouche pushed on from the remaining five members of the breakaway.

Two-time champion Joseph Cooper was left behind, while World Tour rider Tom Scully was the only one who could keep him in sight, 27 seconds behind with two laps to go.

“I was a bit sceptical about going with three laps to go, but I just did it anyway,” recalled Fouche.

“I was definitely surprised [at leaving everyone behind] – I wanted to test it, to see who could follow.

“I was stoked to be able to gap everyone, but I wasn’t too sure if I could hold it or not – it played into my hands well.”

There seemed to be a chance that Scully could reel Fouche back in, but the youngster was in another dimension.

With over 140 kilometres of racing already in his legs, he pro-

duced the back-to-back fastest laps of the race, by some margin.

Suddenly, as he took the bell for the final lap, he had a lead of 1.58 on the despairing chasers, and he only extended that advantage to ride into Napier with nobody in sight.

Kees Duyvesteyn beat Scully in a sprint to claim an impressive second, while the World Tour duo of Bevin and Bennett finished fifth and seventh respectively.

They were solid performances from the current stars of the sport, but the day belonged to a future star.

Ellyse Perry has produced a stunning all-round captain’s display to pilot the Sydney Sixers to a convincing 32-run away victory over Perth in their WBBL clash.

After winning the toss and batting first yesterday, Perry was dominant with the bat, ball and in the field.

Taylor’s stellar career just keeps on going

By Niall aNdersoN It’s rare for a New Zealand cricketer to get better in their mid-30s, but Ross Taylor proved long ago that he’s not your usual cricketer.

Taylor turns 35 in March, yet his last two years of ODI cricket have been the best of his career, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

Since the start of 2017, Taylor is averaging 70.04 in the 50-over format – an absurd record which has only increased of late.

In 2018, Taylor averaged 91.28 in ODIs, and New Zealand’s second highest one-day runs scorer has started the new year in similarly superb fashion.

After grafting 80 and 86 against

Pakistan on low and slow tracks in the United Arab Emirates, he’s proven just as potent on the batsman-friendly conditions, carving innings of 54 and 90 against Sri Lanka to begin 2019.

It’s the continuation of a stellar run which has seen him smack fifties in five consecutive innings – one short of the New Zealand ODI record – and in seven of the last eight.

That run has seen Taylor move to the top of New Zealand’s alltime ODI averages list, with a stellar average of 47.35 – one of just four New Zealanders to hold an average over 40, and the ninth best all-time of batsmen to have played at least 100 ODIs. His innings on Saturday was an

important one, having come in with the Black Caps in a spot of bother at 39-2 after Taylor’s two current compatriots in the 40plus club failed to make their usual impact.

After combining for 214 runs in the opening ODI, Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson could only muster 14 together, leaving Taylor and Colin Munro with plenty of work to do to.

As he has done so many times in the past, Taylor played the anchoring role, with his 90 off 105 balls consisting of just five boundaries, but rarely playing a loose stroke.

He added a 112-run stand with Munro, 57 with Henry Nicholls and 54 with Jimmy Neesham, all who were granted the ability to at-

Sometimes criticised for operating too slowly in the middle order, Taylor did have a patch after the dismissal of Munro where his innings slowed, but the Black Caps were never in trouble of posting a below-par total.

One particular nine-over period in conjunction with Nicholls saw no boundaries hit, but the hosts still eked out 38 runs – battling through a tricky period with acceptable accumulation, and setting a platform to push on from.

It’s all part of a role from which Taylor has produced plenty of dividends, in a batting lineup which is starting to click into gear as the World Cup looms.

Deja vu for Hanrahan There was a distinct case of déjà vu when Ultimate Rocker downed more favoured stablemate Strong Enough in the Remembering Boomer Bailey maiden pace at Washdyke on Saturday.

The only previous occasion that trainer Laurence Hanrahan has posted the quinella in a race was three years ago at Washdyke when Stephen McNally won with Pocket Of Jewels over the favourite Cullen Keefe and Ricky May. May opted to drive Strong Enough on this occasion and he was the odds on favourite after winning his two trials last month, with Ultimate Rocker chasing him home on both occasions.

But, when the three-year-old geldings both made their debuts at the Timaru meeting, it was Ultimate Rocker and McNally who prevailed off a slightly better trip.

“There’s not much between them to be fair, although Strong Enough can do a bit more work,” Hanrahan said. “He had to do that after being left parked but Ultimate Rocker was also a lot closer to him on the turn today compared to their trials.”

The result should have come as no great surprise as Ultimate Rocker and Strong Enough have been literally matching strides for the last two years.

Novak man to beat

By Justin ChadwiCk Roger Federer has nominated Novak Djokovic as the man to beat at the Australian Open, but the Swiss maestro looms as a major threat himself following his near-perfect Hopman Cup campaign.

Federer won all four of his singles matches in straight sets at the mixed teams event, helping propel Switzerland to a second straight title.

The 37-year-old is now aiming to snare a third straight Australian Open crown, but Djokovic looms as his major obstacle.

Djokovic regained his mojo last year, winning the US Open and Wimbledon on the way to reclaiming the No.1 world ranking.

The 31-year-old’s Australian Open preparations suffered a slight blip on Saturday when he lost 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 to Roberto Bautista Agut in the Qatar Open semi-finals.

But he is a hot favourite to win a seventh Australian Open title, which would take his career grand slam tally to 15.

Federer still leads the way with 20 majors, but knows he faces a massive challenge to get past Djokovic at the Australian Open.

“No doubt about it.

“I think he’s the favourite,” Federer said.

“Regardless of what happened in Doha, the guy had a super strong last five, six months of the year.

“He struggled early, but with his class and once he gets his groove back, he’s very tough to beat.

“People always doubt, always wonder if he’s ever really going to come back.

“But he knows how to hit a tennis ball.

“It’s all in the body.

“It’s the same with Rafa – we know when he’s 100 per cent how tough he is to beat.

“The moment these guys show up on the court 100 per cent, they’re always going to be the favourites.”

Federer’s career looked to be on the wane when his 2016 campaign was ruined by a knee injury.

But the world No.3 surprised even himself by his strong return, adding two more Australian Open crowns and a Wimbledon title to his bulging trophy cabinet.

“Winning back-to-back Aussie Opens in the my mid 30s, it was one of the favourite things I’d look back on in my career,” Federer said.

“I didn’t think it was going to happen.”

Federer will fine-tune his preparations in Melbourne before the Australian Open begins.

Rafael Nadal’s fitness is under a cloud after he was forced to pull out of the Brisbane International with a thigh injury.

DEATHS MILNER, Sally Joanne Rosevear – Peacefully at Ashburton Hospital on Sunday, January 6, 2019 aged 48 years. Dearly loved wife of Mark, cherished and adored Mum of Emily, and Sam, and Mark’s daughter Courtney. At rest after a courageous battle with cancer.

Croquet returned to the grass at the Waireka Croquet Club for the first time in 2019 on Saturday, and Pauline Scott was among those who braved the sweltering conditions to play. While plenty of players turned out at Waireka on Saturday, some of their members were away and in action elsewhere. In Oamaru Bill Allnutt was playing in the Don Reyland competition play-off, trying to earn the right to be the South Canterbury representative at the national Don Reyland finals in the Thames Valley, but he finished third. And in Tauranga, three of the club’s youngest members – Edmund Fordyce, Logan McCorkindale and Kaleb Small – were playing at the Croquet New Zealand Association Croquet Championship, where McCorkindale and Fordyce had both made the doubles finals with their playing partners.

Hourigan pipped in doubles thriller There was no fairytale finish in the ASB Classic doubles final yesterday, with Kiwi Paige Hourigan and her American opponent Taylor Townsend defeated in a truly bizarre match.

Hourigan and Townsend took the first set in just 18 minutes, but couldn’t keep up the momentum, with Eugenie Bouchard and Sofia

Kenin prevailing 1-6 6-1 10-7.

Bouchard and Kenin were more composed in the super tiebreak, especially in the latter stages, and that was ultimately the difference.

Hourigan was aiming to become the first New Zealand woman since 1987 to take out a doubles title in Auckland, after Marina Erakovic (2011) and Leanne Baker

(2005) fell at the final hurdle.

The final was a strange match.

Bouchard and Kenin had trained in an extended session in the afternoon, but started like they had left all their energy on court. The Canadian-American duo were listless from the beginning while Hourigan and Townsend were like energiser bunnies.

But Bouchard and Kenin found their game in the second set, while the levels of Townsend, and in particular Hourigan, dropped markedly.

The young Kiwi saved three set points at 1-5, but couldn’t save a fourth as Bouchard and Kenin tied up the match.

The tiebreak was a tight af-

fair. Neither team could gain an advantage until the latter stages, when a couple of errors from Hourigan gave the North American duo a match point at 9-7.

After a tense rally, Townsend netted a cross court backhand to hand Bouchard and Kenin the trophy, in their first WTA tournament together.
