On budget, but spend lags

Halfway through its financial year, the Ashburton District Council is almost bang on budget with its income and expenditure.

It has gathered $41.65 million in income, 47 per cent of the total budget and has spent 51 per cent of budget, $41.57 million.

Hidden in those figures, however, are wide variations in

spending in a number of areas, a report to the council’s audit, risk and finance committee shows.

Five big ticket capital development items in the budget will not be completed this year and are likely to see more than $17 million carried over into the 2021/2022 year.

The council had planned to spend more than $2.5 million this year on remedial work on Ashburton’s art gallery and mu-

seum building but just $200,000 of this is likely to be spent in the current year. Design of the requirements for this work has taken longer than expected and ordering new air conditioning systems has seen a delay of 22 weeks.

More than $12 million has been budgeted as capital expenditure on roading and footpaths, but to date just 28 per cent of this, $3.4

million, has been spent.

A significant portion of footpath expenditure has been delayed until towards the end of the financial year because of work on Ashburton’s central business district.

Waitangi Day festivities draw crowds The sounds, smells and tastes of the world were on offer yesterday in Ashburton as thousands flocked to the central township for the Multi Cultural Bite and Waitangi on East celebrations.

The annual events saw the CBD decorated in a swathe of different colours and nationalities highlighting an otherwise glum and cool Waitangi Day afternoon after a south-west wind took over from the earlier perfect morning weather.

Despite the coolness, the crowds didn’t keep away with growing numbers throughout the morning after things began around 10am and at 2pm, there were still plenty of people making their way around the streets, taking in all that was on offer.

Making the trek up from Timaru for the day was 32-year-old, Kirsty Shaw who brought along her mother, and two children

Jaxon, 6, and Lacey, 2, for the day.

“We come up each year for Boulevard Day, but heard about this and decided to see what it was all about,” she said.

“I’m really impressed, there’s something for everyone with the stalls and then on the other side all of the international things looking at the different cultures as well as the entertainment, we’ll definitely be coming back, that’s for sure.”

Run as two separate events, they both work perfectly alongside each other, offering different things and experiences for attendees and plenty of products appeared to be making their way to new homes from the various stores on East Street while equally as much food was being consumed from around Baring Square East where a number of food stalls of different cultures were set up.

Final touches soon for Chalmers Avenue ​​ Final touches to a stretch of Chalmers Avenue in Ashburton, where a new sewer main was installed last year, will get under way this month and will improve the road surface for drivers.

The last topcoat to seal the road on Chalmers Avenue between Grey Street and the Netherby roundabout at Walnut Avenue will begin on February 24, while rehabilitation work at the roundabout will also be completed.

The work will mean that the section of road will be closed for one week, and a detour will be in place.

The council installed a new sewer main three metres under the road in 2019, and with sufficient time now passed for the ground to settle, council service delivery

group manager Neil McCann said the final road surface was now ready to be applied.​ “Our contractors will chipseal the road which will provide the final top layer that we’ve been waiting for. In addition, the road around the roundabout will be dug up, strengthened and sealed,” he said.

“Generally with these types of projects, where the road is dug up, we need the ground to properly settle over a period of time so that the infill has had to time compact. We then come back and apply the top surface.

“Once completed, this section of road should be a more pleasurable experience for drivers.”

The work is expected to be finished by March 1.

Royston handed fundraising reins

Methven Care Trust will soon be adding a new face to their website in the fundraising co-ordinator’s spot.

When Sue van den Heuvel resigned from the position in 2019, trust chairperson Jo Suyker knew the next person would have big shoes to fill.

“Sue was Methven Care Trust’s first fundraising co-ordinator and did an outstanding job. The board all knew it would take somebody pretty special to replace her,” Suyker said.

Thankfully, local woman Henrietta Royston, known as Hen, saw the position advertised and didn’t hesitate in sending in her résumé.

Suyker and fellow board member, Janine Holland, were given the task of interviewing applicants. According to Suyker, Royston was a standout candidate from the beginning.

Following modern interview techniques, the pair asked Royston to tell them about a time she worked under pressure.

Royston didn’t hesitate to recant how she recently organised a big fundraising quiz night for Our Lady of the Snows Primary School, all while she was nine months’ pregnant .

At that stage of the pregnancy game most expectant mothers would be at home dealing with swollen ankles and feeling fed-up by it all.

Not Royston though, she was there on the night helping out and overseeing the event.

With another successful fundraising quiz under her belt, she calmly headed off to hospital the next morning to deliver her, and husband Michael’s, youngest son Max. “So obviously I passed that question,” Royston said.

Five-month-old Max could have vouched for his Mum, as he came along to the interview too.

Royston, farming husband Michael and their three boys, Oliver, 4, Edward, 2, and the very social five-month-old Max are popular Methven locals.

As the position involves co-ordinating fundraising efforts for the new Methven House build, the trust were looking for someone who understood how the community works and what had been tried on the fundraising front previously.

Suyker said Hen fitted the brief perfectly.

“She’s a delightful woman to work with and came to the table with an understanding of what Methven Care Trust are working towards.”

The interview clincher came when Royton admitted she loved fundraising.

“You need to bottle comments like that,” Suyker said.

Royston is looking forward to picking up the reins of her new job later in the month.

“I love a fundraising challenge along with a good list,” she said.

Methven Care Trust is charged with fundraising for the new Methven House build, they will also oversee the development of the build.

The trust’s goal is to raise the five to six million dollars needed to build a twenty bed aged-care facility focusing on rest home level care.

It is hoped this will be achieved through personal donations or legacies, fundraising efforts of the trust itself and local groups gathering funds on their behalf, plus grant applications.

Thinking outside the fundraising square, the trust built new a house on Camrose Estate in Methven. The deadline sale for the house closes on the 21st of this month.

The house is described as a four bedroom Stonewood home, with the interior design having been done by local interior design company Country by Design.

“We try to do something big each year to raise funds,” Suyker said.

Pharmacy, post in one shop

Postal habits are about to change in Methven, with the town’s postal services on the move to Methven Pharmacy.

The change of partner came after the agent of about 11 years, Callie McAndrew from Gifts Galore, announced in December that her business would close at the end of January. She has continued to operate Methven’s mail delivery and courier run.

The town’s post boxes are still at the Gifts Galore premises but they will also relocate to the new pharmacy site. Normal service will continue until this occurs and NZPost will communicate directly with box holders about the change.

For the pharmacy team a fair bit of thought went into making the decision to pick up the agency, pharmacist Peter Wadea said.

“We think it is a good thing to keep this in town, especially for a lot of our older people,” he said.

A man returning home from a nightshift crashed into a power

Fatal crash A motorcyclist died following a crash on SH3 about 2km south of Mokau, in Taranaki yesterday.

The crash, between a car and a motorcycle, was reported to police about 10am. Police said the road was closed at the time and motorists had experienced delays.

Pharmacist Peter Wadea and pharmacy technician Angie Gutschlag will be adding postal services to their workload from February 17 when the Methven Pharmacy becomes Methven’s new postal agency.

In a statement NZPost said that the change was part of its ongoing commitment to providing postal services where its cus-

tomers were going.

Ashburton’s postal service changed last year from a standalone business to an agency in Ashburton’s Paper Plus.

Court hears crash, speeding cases A man who crashed into a bridge admitted to a charge of careless driving in front of the Justices of the Peace Eric Weir and Steve Wise in the Ashburton District Court on Wednesday.

Bevan John Knighton was driving along State Highway 1 near Hinds at around 8.40am when he swerved left on to a section of gravel then back on to the road.

He swerved to the left a second time, crashing into the side of the Hinds River bridge.

He told police he had not been driving fast and had swerved around something on the road that he could not identify which led to the crash.

He was fined $200 on the careless driving charge and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

William Leonard Walls pleaded guilty to one charge of careless driving in the Ashburton District Court on Wednesday following a crash in the Hinds township on December 17 last year.

He drifted left off the road in to a power pole, which caused wires to fall on a following truck, before crashing on to a property.

He told police at the scene that he had fallen asleep behind the wheel while driving home.

Walls told the court that he had enjoyed working nightshifts when he was younger and had only recently returned to working them but found them more tiring than before.

He said the truck that the power lines fell on had been follow-

ing closely behind him, and that he did not feel it would be safe to pull over to the side of the road to ring his wife to come and pick him up, which he was planning on doing at the time of the crash.

He was fined $400 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

A man who claims he could not see temporary speed limit signs at roadworks he travelled through at more than 50km/h above the speed limit on Seafield Road has been convicted but not fined.

Martyn Victor Baker was stopped by police on November 12 after he was recorded travelling at 81km/h through a temporary 30km/h speed limit zone.

He did not dispute that he was speeding, but told police he could not see the temporary speed limit signs which were displayed.

Had he been travelling 1km/h slower he would have incurred a $630 fine, but by exceeding the speed limit by 51km/h or above his licence was automatically suspended for 28 days.

Baker’s lawyer Jane Argyle-Reed told the court her client had an outstanding driving history and that he had been driving for more than 50 years.

Now retired, the 28 day licence suspension had already served a significant penalty by restricting his travel from his Rakaia Huts home.

JP Eric Weir said they accounted for the mitigating circumstances in their sentence, including the fact he had no previous history and had suffered from the 28 day suspension.

He imposed no fine, but ordered Baker to pay court costs of $130.

Neighbours of the Mt Eden villa where human bones were discovered have described the previous tenants as nice, but said the situation was unusual. Malcolm, who did not want to use his last name, said the police activity was a stark contrast to the normallypeaceful atmosphere on the street.

Acting legend dies Hollywood acting legend Kirk Douglas has died aged 103. The Spartacus star died on Wednesday and is survived by his wife of 65 years Anne Buydens and his three sons Michael, Joel, and Eric. His son Michael Douglas, an acting icon in his own right, revealed the news of his father’s death in an emotional statement. “It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103,” Michael said. “To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband.”

Kiwi on cruise ship tests positive for coronavirus RNZ

Nearly 4000 passengers and crew on board the Diamond Princess have been put into mandatory quarantine for two weeks.

and there are a total of 223 Australians on the ship.

On Wednesday there were a total of 10 confirmed cases of coronavirus on the ship, half of the confirmed cases were Japanese citizens aged between 50 and 80 and none were in serious condition.

There are 2666 guests and 1045 crew on board the ship.

The coronavirus epidemic, which originated in China’s Hubei province, has killed hundreds of people and infected more than 20,000 so far.

The death toll in China stood at 560 yesterday afternoon.

Campervan life for Wuhan evacuees NZME New Zealanders who have been evacuated from Wuhan say they are grateful for the help they are receiving from the government and each other.

Fifty-four New Zealand citizens and 44 permanent residents on Chinese passports arrived at a navy base in Whangaparaoa, north of Auckland, just after midnight and started their 14-day quarantine.

Their Air New Zealand flight was arranged by the New Zealand government in the wake of the coronavirus that originated in Wuhan.

Families and individuals have been assigned a campervan with a number on each of them, according to people RNZ spoke to.

An Auckland woman, who did not want her name used, said she felt lucky that the family, including her husband and two young children, were able to stay together in this special experience.

“There’s a dining hall that we can go to and get food. Then you

take the food back and eat it in the campervan,” she said.

“We got lots of options for breakfast, including yogurt, egg, sausage and bread. Last night, we were also given fruit, chips, juice, water and even a hat. We were provided with a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and all that.”

She said they were exhausted yesterday and would like to find out more regarding how relatives and friends can drop off some goods for them.

“All the staff members who have been involved in this evacuation are very kind and nice to us. I felt very touched,” she said.

Auckland man Mr Li, who did not wish to use his full name and who has been in New Zealand, was excited to be reunited with his sixyear-old son who went to Wuhan alone for a holiday.

Li, who is now staying in quarantine with his son, said he was appreciative of a family who helped

bring his son back.

“Not only did they help bringing my son back, they also helped other people. Another evacuee has two kids and a few suitcases, and this family helped them with the luggage all the way,” he said.

Li said staff told them there will be children’s activities as well.

He said they were asked to stay in their campervan as much as possible, and put a mask on whenever they go outside and wash their hands after they came back to the campervan.

People were also asked not to visit each other, and stay at least an arm’s length apart when talking to each other outside the campervan and no longer than 15 minutes every time, he said.

What is

Understanding the different kinds of home ownership in New Zealand can be confusing.

Buying a unit title property, such as an apartment or townhouse, means you automatically become part of a body corporate, but what does this mean for you?

What is a unit title?

Unit title ownership, also known as a strata title or stratum estate, is most common in a building where there are multiple owners, like townhouses, units or apartments.

As a unit title owner, you own your apartment or unit outright and anything else listed in the record of title, such as garages, car parks and private outdoor areas. You also have an undivided share of the common property, such as lifts, lobby areas, driveways and shared gardens.

Owning a unit title means there are different obligations to your standard house and land ownership. They are governed by the Unit Titles Act 2010, which sets out the rights and responsibilities of a unit title owner, so that the group of units can be managed effectively.

What is a body corporate?

When you buy a unit title, you automatically become a member of the body corporate, which is made up of all the unit owners acting as a group.

What does a body corporate do?

Body corporates handle the management and maintenance of the building and property. Most day-to-day decisions of the body corporate can be made by a body corporate committee or with the agreement of 50 per cent

or more of the unit owners. Some decisions will require the agreement of 75 per cent or more of the unit owners.

The body corporate must hold an AGM (annual general meeting) at least once a year to discuss issues and vote on them.

What does it cost to be a member of a body corporate?

You will usually pay an annual fee (a levy) to the body corporate, which will go towards budgeted body corporate expenses.

The fee will include costs like insurance and management expenses (by an external contractor), contributing to a long-term maintenance fund (LTMF) and any services the body corporate arranges for its members (for example, rubbish collection and cleaning communal areas).

Any body corporate costs that have not been included in the budget are also payable by the unit owners, usually by way of a special levy.

What should I know about a unit title before I buy?

When buying a unit title, the seller must give you the following information about the unit and the body corporate before you buy: • A pre-contract disclosure statement,

which the seller provides before entering into an agreement for sale and purchase.

• A pre-settlement disclosure statement, which the seller provides after entering the agreement for sale and purchase, but before settlement of the sale.

• Any additional information you request about the body corporate.

Additional information could include the insurance policy for the property and information about any other liabilities, such as repair bills and maintenance fees.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment have a site called unittitles.govt.nz , which covers everything you need to know about unit titles, including unit owners’ responsibilities, how body corporates work, money and maintenance and a short guide to unit titles.

Real Estate Authority (REA) chief executive, Kevin Lampen-Smith says: “As with any property purchase, it’s wise to seek legal advice. Your lawyer or conveyancer can help you understand the body corporate rules – your obligations and what you can and can’t do with your apartment or townhouse.”

Talk to the neighbours Chatting to other unit, apartment or townhouse owners can be beneficial.

Not only will they be able to give you their opinion on what it’s like to live at the property, but they will also be able to give you an owner’s perspective on how the body corporate functions – if it has been working well, if any works are outstanding or if there are matters that have not been logged in the body corporate meeting minutes.

Things to think about before you buy a unit title property When buying any property, it’s important that you do your homework.

Here are some questions you may wish to ask when buying a unit title: • Can I have a copy of the body

corporate’s rules?

• Can I get copies of the minutes from

the body corporate’s meetings?

• How are the body corporate’s finances managed?

• Can I see the financial reports and budgets from the previous years?

• Are there regular fees I need to pay?

If so, how are these collected?

• Are all the owners’ levies up to date?

• Does the body corporate have a long-term maintenance fund?

• What is the body corporate’s longterm maintenance plan? What does it cover?

• Does the long-term maintenance fund have enough money in it to pay for the repairs and maintenance detailed in the plan?

• Is there any major maintenance due and are there funds to complete it?

• What is the building’s insurance policy?

• How many units or apartments are owner-occupied?

• Of the tenanted properties, are the rentals long or short-term?

• How much soundproofing does the unit have?

• How are disputes handled?

• Does my unit or apartment come with a parking spot or do I need to purchase a separate title?

• Is there any visitor parking?

“When buying a unit title property, it’s important that you have a clear understanding of what you’re committing to. Remember that you will be sharing common property and responsibilities with those around you,” says Lampen-Smith.

Number of driving charges a concern R

eaders of news from out of the Ashburton District Courthouse this week would have noticed an alarmingly growing trend among the charges, sentences and penalties handed down throughout the course of a busy week.

While the usual cases appeared, they were all usurped by an incredibly large number of driving offences, from speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs right through to the extremely concerning notion of fleeing from police.

The latter is of big concern and events of the past 12 months around the country, particularly up the road near Christchurch in which a number

of fatal crashes have occurred during police chases, have obviously done nothing to deter drivers from abiding by the laws of the road and pulling over when requested to do so by police.

There are a couple of logical explanations for why there seems to be an increased amount of driving offences, more than a dozen drink driving

charges in particular and that’s that it had been quite some time since a court sitting and it also took into account the festive season when people are more likely to get behind the wheel having had a few drinks.

But one drink driving charge is one too many, and it’s the same for the raft of other types of offences we have seen during the week.

As a society we should be demanding more of ourselves, our peers and our community when it comes to how we operate motor vehicles or, most specifically, why we handle motor vehicles while under the influence.

We’ve had a reasonably safe start to the year on our roads, and it would be nice to keep it

that way for the remainder of 2020, but the cold hard facts and statistics suggest that, if these sorts of numbers keep cropping up in our court news each time the doors open, then the chances of more fatalities and injuries is greater perhaps than ever.

New Zealand’s got a bad record for road deaths, far more than we should endure and while nationally it’s a problem, the responsibility probably sits more within our communities to try and curb the growing numbers.

How that’s done, is a bit of a moving beast in many senses.

It’s not going to happen over night, but with a concerted effort by everyone to make use of the various options available,

other than getting into the car when you’ve had a few drinks, or thinking you’re invincible when you sit behind the wheel, then things will become a lot safer.

I was asked this week why we seemed to enjoy producing court news and I can assure you there is no enjoyment from filling so much space with such a sad state of affairs.

We’d be a lot happier if we didn’t have to write about another drink driver being caught over the legal limit, or another story about someone who fled from police or who was caught travelling at some ridiculous speed around the district.

That’d mean that the roads are a much safer place, and that’s all everybody wants.

In 1991, Jean-Bertrand Aristide was inaugurated as the first democratically elected president of Haiti (he was overthrown by the military the following September).

In 1998, the Winter Olympic Games were opened in Nagano, Japan, by Emperor Akihito.

In 1999, Jordan’s King Hussein died of cancer at age 63; he was succeeded by his eldest son, Abdullah.

Ten years ago: A nearly completed Kleen Energy Systems power plant in Middletown,

Connecticut, exploded, killing six people and injuring 50. ProRussian opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych declared victory in Ukraine’s presidential runoff, but his opponents rejected the claim, saying the vote was too close to call. (Yanukovych was inaugurated February 25.)

Five years ago: Olympic gold medallist Bruce (now Caitlyn) Jenner was involved in a fatal multiple-vehicle crash on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California, that left one woman dead and several others injured.

One year ago: Democrats launched a sweeping plan to transform the US economy to combat climate change and create thousands of jobs in renewable energy; at least six senators running for president or considering White House bids backed the Green New Deal.

People still quackers for the duck race O

ne of the best feelings in the world is knowing that someone is happy because of you.

That was my thought for the day on Wednesday last week. I can’t claim ownership of that wee gem but it really hit a note with me.

I think it was the timing of it, more than anything.

Just a few hours before I read it, I was chatting with my local farming correspondent, Enda on the radio.

Although he has the title of farming correspondent we actually don’t talk a whole heap about farming.

Last week, we covered his family trip to Kaikoura, where they were lucky enough to encounter some whales while out on a whale watching trip.

He also wanted to see firsthand the changes to the drive into the town caused by the earthquake.

We also discussed Kobe Bryant’s passing and talked about how crazy things were around Hokonui at the moment with the looming Duck Race.

Enda’s family have won a duck, but he said they would have been there if they hadn’t been lucky enough to win a duck.

“It’s such a fun night Hoops.”

This is the bit that really hit home for me. He went on to say,

one of his workers had been lucky enough to win a duck also.

“She must have texted me a dozen times the day she won it to tell me how excited she was to have a duck.

“You have made her so happy Hoops.”

How cool is that? I don’t mind taking the credit for making her so happy, but it’s more about the night itself.

I’m not sure what it is exactly about the duck race that creates the buzz.

I think it’s a combination of things.

It’s a super location.

A creek beside a pub, perfect for a duck race.

Great hosts! It wouldn’t be the same without Skippy and Amanda.

Great prizes certainly helps.

Everything from skydiving jumps to e-scooters will be won on the night.

Hopefully the team at Hokonui plays a part in making it such a success too.

As Skippy said to me on air last week, it’s more than just a duck race, it’s a catch-up night.

It really has taken over from the Boxing Day races from back in the day when you’d see people there, that you hadn’t seen for donkeys.

It’s the wonderful part of this job of mine, driving a vehicle that can do some good for people and make people happy.

From helping to promote a fundraiser to giving away ducks, it can be very satisfying at times.

So after 12 runnings of the duck race has the interest died down any?

Absolutely not!

If anything I’d say this year, the buzz around the race is bigger than I’ve experienced before.

People have been setting their phone redials from 4.30am.

I have well over 300 entries for each duck on my Facebook page and the text machine has been going nuts as well.

Love will be in the air this Valentine’s Day. Duck Race love at the Phat Duck.

The question will be asked W

hat is it?

That’s the question from most people as any CanAm Ryker pulls up to the pump.

A loaded question for sure and, if a rider decides to answer, he or she will surely spend the next five minutes explaining just what this three-wheeled wonder is.

Because, if there is one thing people need to know about the Can-Am Ryker, it’s that it doesn’t fly under the radar.

Neither a car nor a motorcycle, the Ryker sits at an interesting crossroads within the automotive industry.

It offers open-air freedom – normally associated only with a motorcycle – combined with the ease of use of a car.

It is one of the most innovative vehicles in recent years thanks to a few clever features built into the design.

Can-Am has been rolling to this different take on the three-wheeler for a while. It entered the market with the Can-Am Spyder in 2007, from a history in snowmobiles.

This is apparent when you look at the Ryker’s wheels. Unlike traditional threewheeled motorcycles, the Ryker features a solo rear wheel with two front wheels riding outset on double-wishbone suspension.

Wheels are turned with a handlebar that is adjustable for reach with an easy clamp system.

This allows the rider to shift it forward or backwards on its sliding mount.

Just like a more conventional trike, there is no countersteering involved in steering the Ryker.

Handlebars are pointed in the direction the rider wants to go – and he or she will want to hold on tight.

A 900cc Rotax three-cylinder engine produces 61.1kW and 71Nm, with drive making its way to the rear wheel via a CVT gearbox and shaft final drive.

Though a manual gearbox might sound appealing for shifting enthusiasts, that • Latest facelift option would vastly overcomplicate the • 15,000km simple riding dynamics.

• 2.8L Turbo Diesel That’s because turning those two front wheels with their car-sized rubber takes a decent amount of heft.

Adding a clutch to modulate into the mix adds complexity the rider doesn’t need. As it stands, the CVT has two “gears” with its forward gear and reverse gear accessed by a lever on the left side of the Ryker.

While it may sound paltry power for a 285kg vehicle, it allows for a fun package, with few vehicles giving the same feedback on what the front wheels are doing at any given time.

The Ryker has some big names as competitors – the Harley-Davidson Freewheeler or the modern take Yamaha Niken – but those require a full motorcycle licence.

Riding the Ryker requires only a car licence, skipping years stuck in the sub660cc LAMS category in the process.

The Ryker has the market cornered with its low entry point. With a parallel-twin powered base model retailing from $15,499 the three-model range tops out with the $19,999 rally version. So it’s accessible, affordable and eye-catching.

Its 1509mm width does mean there’s no lane-splitting action to be had in heavy traffic.

And you’ll be asked the same question.

Colin spoilt for choice M

y mate Colin Gilbert recently celebrated a significant birthday (LXXX in Roman numerals).

Such number which is almost matched by the variety of Ford product he has owned over those many years.

But herein lies a problem, for after a successive number of Falcons in more recent years (which have all been coloured white and mostly traded in on the next latest model and soon to be available before the first set of tyres needed replacing), the demise of the Falcon range a means a challenge of just what to do about a replacement.

Especially as said gentleman’s reaction to SUV-type vehicles, as well as those with front-wheel-drive and/or hybrid systems remains lukewarm, at best.

Then as well, reasonably frequent drives to Queenstown need to be factored in.

So what amongst the current Ford lineup might I suggest?

Well, maybe for a start, how about the Fiesta ST, which, for $35,490 will put a smile on most peoples faces?

Especially as it’s 1.5-litre, three cylinder turbo-petrol comes up with 147kW and 290Nm of torque.

It has a six-speed manual and Normal-Sport-Track (complete with

Launch Control) drive modes.

Accordingly it can scamper from 0-100km/h in 6.5seconds.

But it’s front-wheel-drive!

Not that one will probably notice, for Ford Performance have modified the chassis and there’s a limited-slip-differential.

All of which you enjoy from the front Recaro seats.

It’s practical as well with four doors and good luggage space.

Next up in size, price ($58,990) and setup to provide the next level of driving enjoyment is the soon-to-be-available Focus ST ( NB – it’s very different to the ST-Line).

For the ST has a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, producing 206kW and 420Nm, together with a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission.

It’s also front-wheel-drive, with an electronic limited-slip-diff, has lots of selectable drive modes as well as adaptive suspension and 19-inch alloys with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres.

Recaro seats of course, but complete with a10-speaker sound system, dual zone climate-air it will also fit into the role of being a practical four door hatch – albeit undoubtedly, a seriously fast one!

That’s all very fine, but where’s the rearwheel-drive drive cars?

Well, how about one of the recently-enhanced Mustangs, either in EcoBoost

(from $65,990) or GT (from $89,990).

The former’s 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine now produces 236kW and 448Nm, while the GT’s V8 does 339kW/556Nm. While both will certainly continue the smile-on-the-face theme, they probably may not meet the practicality side.

They would definitely be a delight for the drives to Queenstown, but then unfortunately be a bit limited for driving the family about once there.

Which brings up the question of SUVs, and in particular the impressively comfortable Endura, for when spacious transport for four, or five adults is required.

And yes, this $69,990 Titanium version of the diesel-only Endura range also covers the rear-wheel-drive situation, because it has all-wheel-drive.

Inside it’s wide, spacious and comfortable, both front and back.

With all seats occupied there’s up to 800

litres of luggage space (1688 litres with rear seats folded).

Power of 140kW and 400Nm (from 20003000rpm) is delivered by the quiet (you can easily think it’s a petrol from within) 2-litre, single-scroll diesel.

As well there’s an eight-speed auto (whose rotary controller takes a bit of getting used to).

Zero to 100km/h can happen in 8.8 seconds, while the claimed overall diesel consumption figure is 6.7L/100Km. At a 100km/h cruise the rev counter sits at just 1500rpm.

With its combination of a nicely balanced chassis and responsive steering there’s reassuringly predictable and safe feel on both on seal and shingle, where on both the ride comfort was excellent.

It’s also packed with safety and driver technology including adaptive cruise, as well Ford’s latest infotainment system.

To keep kids (big and small) entertained in the back seats there’s screens on the back of the front seats.

There’s five year unlimited warranty and three year Roadside assistance programmes for these new Fords.

In closing, perhaps the easiest way for solving this particular replacement vehicle puzzle will be to choose one closest in price to that LXXX birthday - such as an $84,990 Ranger Raptor or the Mustang GT!

Taylor: How we turned it around

“Sometimes the results go your way, sometimes they don’t, but as long as you’re playing good cricket, and you’re in the game all the time – that’s what matters.”

India captain Virat Kohli cut a content figure when offering that quote after his side’s four-wicket defeat to New Zealand at Seddon Park on Wednesday night, and while he was reflecting on his own side’s performance, the Black Caps would be unlikely to disagree with his opinion.

After three last-gasp defeats in the Twenty20 series where they were not only in the game, but in control of it until some late-game catastrophes, the Black Caps finally saw the results go their way, and in doing so, once again displayed just how slim the margins are between glory and despair.

Ross Taylor was the Black Caps’ hero, with a masterful unbeaten 109 from 84 balls as the Black Caps chased down 348 to record their largest run chase in ODI history.

It was a significant turnaround from the Twenty20 series, where Taylor had helped guide the Black Caps to the brink of victory, only to get out late in the piece on three occasions.

One of those saw him dismissed on the last ball with the scores tied, and Taylor – who was also dropped on 10 on Wednesday, reflected on how luck can be such a factor in the shorter formats.

It could have been totally two different results, but that’s cricket, and I guess that’s why we love the game, but those little things probably just went our way, when it didn’t in the Twenty20s.”

That perspective is valuable, and possibly offers an insight into just how the Black Caps managed to bounce back. While some observers outside the camp were

irate over their late-game meltdowns, the Black Caps argued that their defeats – the two Super Overs losses, especially – were largely the result of bad luck, and that once that luck turned, they’d be able to get across the line.

While Taylor admitted the thought of another last-gasp dire defeat crossed his mind – how could it not – when Colin de Grandhomme was run out, leaving the Black Caps needing 17

runs from 24 balls with four wickets in hand, he never believed that there would be a long-lasting effect from the bizarre scenes in the Twenty20 series.

“All we talked about was that there were new personnel coming in, and there was no hangover for them. I’m sure it must play on your mind a little bit, you’re a human, and towards the end there we lost a couple of wickets, but at the same time – our last

[ODI] game was the World Cup final, a lot of guys have played in a lot of pressure situations. There was probably a little bit more experience in this side than in the Twenty20 side, and I think that showed.”

Two of those players who weren’t in the Twenty20 side also shone for the Black Caps. Henry Nicholls set the tone at the top of the order with 78 from 82 balls, before stand-in skipper Tom Latham blasted 69 from 48 balls as part of a 138-run stand from a mere 80 balls.

Taylor credited both with putting him in a position to play the ultimately match-winning hand.

“I had a lot of help out there – the way Henry Nicholls and [Martin Guptill] started, Tom Latham – it’s not easy to come out at five, and if anything, what made that chase a little easier for us was right/left hand combinations, we knew there was one short boundary and I thought we were able to access and use that to our advantage. There were a lot of cameos and it was nice to finish it early and not take it into that last over.”

Kohli was left with few complaints, acknowledging that the Black Caps were the better side.

“I think they batted outstandingly well, we thought [347] was good enough, especially with the start we got with the ball. We were patient enough to get a couple of wickets and got a run out in there as well, but Ross is the most experienced batsman they have, and Tom’s innings is something I think took the game away from us.

“Those two in the middle overs were simply unstoppable.”

Scott McLaughlin set to test Indycar waters NZME Kiwi motorsport ace Scott McLaughlin is ready to explore a new avenue.

The two-time Supercars title winner will make his IndyCar debut in May, taking part in the GMR Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

McLaughlin, who will take part in next week’s IndyCar Series preseason open test in Texas, won’t be leaving the Supercars domain however, with Team Penske confirming the 26-year-old will attempt to win his third straight title this year.

“This is an amazing opportunity – to race against some of the best open wheel drivers in the world on one of the most historic tracks in motorsports,” McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin drove an openwheel car for the first time last month during a rookie evaluation test in Florida, which he said was an opportunity to learn a bit more about a different style of racing.

“It’s a driver’s dream to get a

chance to race an Indy car for Team Penske. With the experience I gained at the test in Sebring, I know a little bit more about what to expect when I get back into the car (in Texas).

“I just want to learn as much as I can every time I’m in the car so I can make the most of the opportunity to race with the team at the Grand Prix in Indianapolis.”

Speaking on McLaughlin’s upcoming venture into the IndyCar circuit, team owner Roger Penske said the team believed the Kiwi would continue to find success behind the wheel even in a relatively unfamiliar series.

“We believe his talent and his drive will continue to shine behind the wheel of an Indy car,” Penske said.

“It will be interesting to see how he continues to develop as we work up to his first race at the Indianapolis Grand Prix. We know Scott will work hard to improve with every lap and he will represent Team Penske well as he gets acclimated to the IndyCar Series.”

Lowry Cup journey begins The quest to claim one of Mid Canterbury Bowls most illustrious titles begins this weekend when 26 players will hit the greens for the qualifying stages of the Lowry Cup singles.

The annual fixture, which is played over two weekends with qualifying tomorrow prior to the knockout stages being held next Sunday, at which an overall winner will be found.

Tomorrow’s play will be conducted on the Methven and Ash-

burton MSA Bowling greens with 14 players in action at Methven and 12 playing on the MSA green.

The field contains three players who have won the event within the past eight seasons, Bruce White (2011-2012 season), Jeff Nowell (2013-2014) and Brentton Donaldson (2017-2018).

Last year’s winner, Brent Mayson doesn’t feature in the list of entries for this season.

Some interesting fixtures in the four rounds of qualifying across

both greens tomorrow will determine how many gain the necessary points to be a part of the knockout stage eight days later.

In particular, Donaldson has a tough four matches to tackle if he’s to try and grab his second title. He plays well established players, Dan Hopkins, Graeme Clark, Bruce White and Simon Fleetwood on the Ashburton MSA green which will make for interesting viewing.

Meanwhile it will be a busy

weekend on the greens around the district and further afield.

On the other side of the Southern Alps, a number of players will do battle in the annual Men’s West Coast open while back on this side of the hills, today will see Friday Triples in action at the Ashburton Bowling Club before Sunday’s big day of action for the Green Keepers Triples.

Played at both the Ashburton and Allenton greens, 32 teams will take part in the competition.

Drysdale confident on Tokyo Olympics prospects

After last year’s rowing World Championships, Mahe Drysdale took some time to ponder his future as an Olympic year approached.

The double-Olympic champion assessed his options and what the year ahead had in store, before deciding to have one last shot at securing the single scull seat for the 2020 Games.

New Zealand rowing rival Robbie Manson held the seat for the past three seasons, but disappointed at last year’s World Championships with a seventh-place finish. With Manson selected in the double scull for two World Cup regattas in May, Drysdale will man the single.

The move comes as a big surprise, after the 41-year-old failed to qualify for the men’s

single scull final at the North Island club championships at Lake Karapiro last month while Manson took out the title. Drysdale later revealed he had been hampered by a minor shoulder injury during the regatta which impacted his performance.

“I made my intentions clear that I wanted to go in the single,” Drysalde told the Herald.

“Basically I knew it was going to be touch and go to put the programme in place within a 10-month period, but I was confident I could do it. I’ve had some time in the single during the last four years and felt like I was making progress every year.”

Despite regularly struggling for form in the single scull since the 2016 Games in Brazil, the three-time Olympic medallist admitted he felt like he had been

counted out by many for a spot in 2020.

“If you look at the results I don’t blame them,” he said.

“There’s even been some doubts in my mind at times but throughout the last four years I’ve had enough little glimpses that I’m confident I can perform and get the result for myself and for the country at Tokyo.

“I’m pretty confident in where my training is at at the moment that it’s not just a pipe dream.

That’s something I’ve always prided myself on in my career – the best I ever am is when we hit those big races – Olympics, World Champs – and unfortunately I haven’t had that opportunity in the last four years in the single for various reasons.

This is my opportunity now, at the World Cups I’ve got to prove myself and if I get a run through

to that Olympics I’m confident I can go and do it again.”

Before he gets to that point, Drysdale will have to prove to the selectors he is the best option for the Tokyo Games later in the year.

Drysdale has been working alongside the women’s double to gauge his improvement and despite some minor injuries slowing his progress down, he said he was happy with the results.

Returning to the water for his first full week of training this week after a minor shoulder niggle, Drysdale said the lead-in to the World Cups, in Italy and Switzerland, would give him a better idea of the targets he needs to hit in order to proven himself as the top candidate for the seat at the Olympics.

“Exactly what that result is, I’m not sure,” he said.

Rugby Australia could find themselves in unfamiliar territory with Fox Sports ready to walk away from a 25-year broadcasting partnership.

The relationship has been in place since the game turned professional and the most recent deal, signed in 2015 and ending at the end of this year, was worth $A285 million ($297 million) and gave Rugby Australia $A57 million ($59 million).

However, the Daily Telegraph reports discussions about extending the long-standing partnership between the two parties came to a halt this week, putting additional pressure on the struggling code.

Should Fox be well and truly out, Rugby Australia would likely look to sign a deal with Ten and Optus, who would show Super Rugby on subscription, the Telegraph reports.

Rugby Australia is expected to take its package to the open market within a fortnight.

“Rugby Australia’s preparations for the next five year rights period have led to a key focus on creating alignment across the rugby competitions in Australia,” a spokesman said.

“Our strategy is to provide an integrated whole of rugby presentation to our fans and, importantly, we are confident that there is real interest from the market in this content.”

New Zealand and South Africa confirmed their respective broadcasting partnerships through 2025 last year.

New Zealand Rugby signed back on with Sky in a deal which will see All Blacks tests (excluding the World Cup), Super Rugby matches, Mitre10 Cup and other domestic competitions televised on the platform. NZR became a five per cent shareholder in the company as part of the deal.

Australia failed to do so follow suit, with Rugby Australia boss Raelene Castle knocking back Fox’s original offer.

Fox has indicated it would be moving on from rugby, sacking highly respected rugby commentator Nick McArdle and former Wallaby Drew Mitchell from their roster as well as cutting their weekly rugby show.

The Telegraph reports the first round matches averaged just 33,000 viewers last weekend, down 19 per cent on round one last year and more worryingly, games with Australian teams were down 35 per cent.

Aaron Cruden made an immediate impact in his return for the Chiefs. virtual trial matches where outplaying opposites bank double points.

The difference separating the Chiefs and Crusaders from their New Zealand counterparts this season is the strength of their respective spines – positions 2, 8, 9, 10, 15. And, more specifically, their favoured directors.

Starting rookie first five-eighth Kaleb Trask and bringing Cruden off the bench was a masterstroke from the Chiefs last week.

Cruden orchestrated the second half comeback from 19-5 down – setting up the match-winning try with his casual, ghosting run where he beat one defender, sucked in another then offloaded to Shaun Stevenson who put Solomon Alaimalo in at the corner.

It was classic Cruden, highlighting the immense value he will bring throughout this campaign. Imagine his influence over a full 80 minutes.

Give him this much time and space and he will burn you every time. Just as important, though, is the way Weber inside him skipped forward runners to pick the right option.

By Liam Napier Predictions one week into the Super Rugby season are doomed but at the risk of writing the Highlanders off before their season begins, it already appears evident two New Zealand sides are in a different class to their compatriots.

Upsets are inevitable in the New Zealand conference but anything other than the Crusaders and Chiefs contesting pole position seems about as likely as Eddie Jones ever biting his tongue.

One outing from the Crusaders was enough to confirm their favouritism for a fourth straight title and while the Chiefs battled to overcome the competitive Blues at Eden Park, they did so bringing many dead-cert starters – Atu Moli, Angus Ta’avao, Aaron Cruden, Brad Weber, Anton Lienert-Brown – off the bench.

Longer term this season, there’s plenty more to come from the Chiefs. Wait until Damian McKenzie eventually takes the field.

Scroll through the respective rosters of the Crusaders and Chiefs and you can pick out any number of contributing factors for their projected supremacy this season.

For the Chiefs, Lachlan Boshier’s relentless work-rate dominated the loose forward scrap against the Blues and hooker Samisoni Taukei’aho proved he is ready to assume responsibility in Nathan Harris’ absence with destructive carries, four tackle breaks, two tries and nine of 10 lineout throws.

The Stormers and Jaguares, after their loss in last year’s final, seem best placed of the overseas challengers but it’s already impossible to overlook the Crusaders and Chiefs from New Zealand.

It’s why their match in Hamilton this week offers an early gauge as to not only who leads this year’s title charge, but which individuals will kick on and force their way into Ian Foster’s maiden All Blacks squad.

Mo problem for mo bros

A local pair are set to compliment each other’s skills when they tackle the Coast to Coast today.

The Methven Mo Bros, comprising of Stephen “Blackie” Blackwell and Jarrod Coutts, will have a ying and yang approach to proceedings as they bring their contrasting sporting skill-sets to the table as a tandem team.

The duo have known each other for four years after Coutts arrived in Methven where he initally worked at the gym.

“We just became mates through that,” Coutts said.

“We then did a few races together ... I wanted to enjoy the team aspect of this (Coast), as I find it much better to do things in a group.

“If there was anyone I was wanting to do it with in Methven, Blackie was the number one target.”

Blackwell is an accomplished long distance runner having completed dozens of half marathons.

In 2018, he came third in the gruelling 84km Molesworth Run. He returned in November as part of the two-person team The Crazy Ks where he and teammate

Klaartje van Schie won their category in a time of 6hrs 37mins.

“I’d consider him to be the fittest man in Methven,” Coutts said.

“He’s a machine, he’s helped my running big time this year.”

Coutts, who is head of outdoor education at Mount Hutt College, brings the experience of the 2019 Coast to Coast to the equation.

Last year he completed the two-day individual in a time of 14hrs 56min.

He said the experience was “pretty overwhelming”.

“It’s pretty fascinating to see what your body can actually do.

“I just wanted to do the event this year with a mate.”

Blackwell, however, took some persuading due to his limited experience in both cycling and in the kayak.

“I suppose I had never done any cycling or kayaking before,” he said.

“With running you just have your shoes, with kayaking you need all your gear and with cycling you have to buy a bike.

“We talked about doing the two-day individual each and then we thought maybe the tandem would be a good idea.”

set to hare off across the 243km course from Kumara Beach this morning.

Feeling like they’ve got their bases covered collectively, the pair are targeting a top 10 finish and a time of around 14hrs 30mins.

“If we manage to finish in the top 5 it’ll be above expectations,” Coutts said.

“It’s all about communication while we’re paddling and talking to each other.

“And Blackie is going to be an absolute workhorse, I’ll be tapped out during the run, and he’ll be hardly breaking a sweat.”
