Office layout ‘put Winz staff at risk’ The Ministry of Social Development has been convicted for failing to take all practicable steps to protect its staff – a matter which came to light after the double-murder in 2014.

The prosecution was brought by WorkSafe which began investigating the ministry after double murderer Russell John Tully stormed Ashburton’s Work and Income office on September 1, 2014, fatally shooting 67-year-old receptionist Peggy Noble and 55-year-old case manager Susan Leigh Cleveland as she begged for her life.

Tully, 50, was also earlier this year found guilty of attempting to murder

case manager Lindy Curtis.

He is currently serving at least 27 years in prison.

Chief District Court Judge Jan-Marie Doogue held a sentencing hearing in the Wellington District Court on Monday but reserved her decision until yesterday.

She entered a conviction against the ministry but said a fine could not be imposed as it was a Crown organisation.

If she had been able to impose a fine, it would have been $16,000 to reflect the “lower band of culpability”.

The ministry pleaded guilty earlier this year to breaching the Health and

Safety Act, but disputed some allegations.

It accepted five of the six practicable steps which WorkSafe alleged it failed to take, but did not accept the first step, which was ensuring there was no physically unrestricted access by clients to the staff working area.

The ministry did not agree with WorkSafe’s interpretation of what a safe office layout should be.

The Little Match Girl to light up the stage

About 200 DanceWorx Ashburton pupils aged from three to 19 are gearing up for their major 2016 production, to stage this weekend.

Among them is 10-year-old Hayley Nolan, who is playing the lead character and show’s namesake of The Little Match Girl.

Hayley has been a DanceWorx pupil for two years, and has been highland dancing since the age of four.

Ballet is her favourite, and mum Janene said her daughter had been so happy to get the match girl role that she cried.

“She had tears in her eyes,” Janene said.

Sneak thief steals pastor’s laptop

Salvation Army Captain Ken Smith’s personal photos were taken from him when a thief took his laptop in a brazen daylight robbery on Sunday.

The pastor of the Salvation Army in Ashburton returned to his office just after midday on Sunday to find his laptop and hard drive missing.

He said the Dell laptop is password protected so wouldn’t be of much use to anyone else.

It also has a sticker that identifies it to the Salvation Army, but

that could be easily peeled off, he said. However, it contains a lot of his work and his hard drive has a lot of personal photos he didn’t have saved anywhere else.

The laptop was stolen between 8.30am and 12.30pm while Smith was running the service.

He had locked the door into his office, but it appears the thief pushed a second door open to gain access.

The second door doesn’t have a lock, but Smith said his work desk is pressed up against it to prevent it from opening.

He said the application failed at balancing the gravity of the offending with the consequences of a conviction, and that a conviction would not affect the ministry in any practical way.

La Hood said the hazard with the office layout was “obvious”, there had been “sustained client violence” over a period of time, and in ministry chief executive Brendan Boyle’s words, client initiated violence was “inevitable”.

“The ministry’s own experience told it that clients with weapons posed a great risk of serious harm,” he said.

The sadness of the story is offset by the joy of dance, and Hayley herself can not wait to perform in the show, to stage on Friday and Saturday at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

She said she loved the creativity of dance.

“The movements and what you can do to express yourself,” Hayley said.

DanceWorx spokesperson Charmaine Quaid has been teaching in Ashburton for 47 years, and is onto her third generation of pupils.

“The Ashburton public have always been very supportive,” she said.

She generally put on a major show every second year, and this was her 37th show.



Conditions of bail ignored A man booked for drink driving while on orders not to consume alcohol appeared in the Ashburton District Court for sentencing on Monday.

Eneliko Crawley, 25, of Tinwald, was awaiting sentencing on an assault charge when he was caught driving with an excess breath alcohol level of 679 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath on October 10.

Not consuming alcohol was a condition of his bail, the court was told.

The assault charge came about after Crawley intervened in a road side assault which started after a chance meeting on a roadside, spurred by a comment about a rival rugby team.

Crawley had landed a single punch, hitting the victim in the neck while he lay defenceless on the ground. He sustained serious injuries at the hands of another offender, who has yet to be sentenced, however Judge Joanna Maze accepted Crawley’s action had not resulted in any injuries.

He also pulled the other man off the unconscious victim.

Crawley had offered $1000 in reparations at an earlier hearing, but had since spent the money on airfares for family members to come to New Zealand for Christmas, his lawyer Michelle Barrell said.

Judge Maze stood the matter down to enable Barrell to ascertain Crawley’s motivation to make good the reparations, before convicting him and ordering him to pay $200 to the victim within two weeks, and the remainder of the $1000 in hundred dollar instalments over time.

He was further sentenced to six months supervision and disqualified from driving for six months on the drink driving matter.

Cemetery ‘a rubbish dump’

Methven Community Board members are blaming the Ashburton District Council for making their town cemetery look like a greenwaste dumping ground.

But the council says it is only the grave tailings which are causing the issue, and it is working on a long-term solution.

Members are frustrated the council has used a forested area framing the graveyard to place

tree clippings, large piles of dirt and piles of shingle.

“It’s starting to look like a place where you dump rubbish,” member Ron Smith said at the board’s six-weekly meeting on Monday.

Members attended the meeting after taking a bus tour of the town, undertaken annually to identify areas of concern.

“The Methven Cemetery used to be really nice, it’s just ruined the whole look of it,” Smith said following the meeting.

Tree trimming had earlier

been identified as an issue, and that work was under way, however, instead of the cemetery beginning to look better it was getting worse.

Chairman Dan McLaughlin said the council had been saying it would clean up the mess for about 14 months. However, it had not been done, and it could encourage others to dump their green waste there.

It was unknown where the council was getting the material it was storing or dumping there, and it appeared to be more ma-

terial than what could come from preparing grave sites.

However, council open spaces spokesperson Rhonda Gallagher said the material was cemetery tailings from the graves, known as spoil.

The cemetery’s sexton did not have the equipment necessary to take the spoil elsewhere, and there was no other designated area for it to go.

“Staff are working on a longterm solution … this would include investigating where the current spoil would be taken.”

I need my garden tamed

Among those wanting a helping hand this Christmas is Heather Price, who would love someone to help her tame her vegetable garden.

“It’s absolutely out of control,” she said.

Life’s not easy for Heather. She might be fit and able, but when you’re a grandmother raising three pre-schoolers, finding the time – or the energy – to dig, plant and weed a vegetable garden is almost impossible.

Heather knows that getting the garden under control and being able to grow most of her own vegetables would make a big difference to her family budget. When you’re a nana, and you’re full time carer for three pre-schoolers, gardening is not high on the priority list, however.

“I’d just love for someone to come along and help me get the garden sorted. In the past I’ve had a vegetable garden, but with three wee ones it’s not so easy,” she said.

Heather’s already raised two grandchildren, but when the need is there, you don’t turn family away, she said.

She’s lived in Ashburton since the February 2011 earthquakes and said she’s been overwhelmed by the kindness and the willingness of local organisations who are prepared to help people in need.

“It’s amazing here the help I’ve had since I’ve had my grandchildren living with me. Seeds, Birthright, Presbyterian Support, I can’t speak highly enough of them.”

Now knowing that the community’s newspaper, the Guardian, was prepared to encourage people to help those who needed a helping hand at Christmas time was the icing on the cake, she said.

Initially Heather was reluctant to put her name forward, but now she’s taken the step of asking for help, she’s looking forward to having a much tidier backyard for Christmas.

And she’s already planning to buy vegetable seeds and plants to ensure her family can enjoy picking vegetables fresh from their own garden.

If the true spirit of Christmas is in the giving, then Ashburton’s elderly have created an opportunity for the community to show how much it cares. When the Guardian asked the district’s older residents if they had a Christmas wish they’d love to have granted, they responded in large numbers, with more than 60 people asking for help that ranged from gardening and window cleaning to baking and a special outing. The challenge for the community is now to ensure those wishes are met.

In brief Charge dismissed A WorkSafe NZ charge laid against Ashburton vegetable processor Talleys has been dismissed by a district court judge. Talleys was charged with failing to take all practicable steps to ensure safety after an employee was injured in an incident involving a forklift.

Judge Joanna Maze heard legal arguments pertaining to the matter in the Ashburton District Court last month, with Jonathon Eaton QC representing Talleys.

Yesterday, Judge Maze delivered her findings. She said the charge was not a nullity, but lacked compliance with the Criminal Procedures Act and required amendment. As the charging document was incapable of remedy, she said there was no option but to dismiss the charge.

Flow plan praised Ashburton District Councillor Liz McMillan has praised Methven Primary School pupils for a trafficflow improvement idea which has now become reality. McMillan is one of two council representatives on the Methven Community Board, which had its six-weekly meeting on Monday. Council reported to the meeting that a new McDonald Street school pupil drop-off zone was completed in September.

McMillan said it was working well for parents of children at the school. And she thought it was “fantastic” that it was pupils at the school which had come up with the drop-off zone idea in the first place. Students last year investigated traffic improvement options and presented a report to the board.

At least 13,000 salmon died on Saturday night, after their water supply was shut off by intruders on a salmon farm.

Police are investigating the incident that occurred at the Paringa Salmon Farm Café, South Westland. Overnight on December 3, important machinery was tampered with; the alleged offenders shutting off the water supply to the salmon rearing tanks, causing the fish to suffocate due to lack of oxygen. Haast police station’s senior constable Paul Gurney said it had caused thousands of dollars of loss for the business.

The following people appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court this week: Matthew Richard Baxter, 21, of Mayfield, admitted charges of possessing cannabis for supply and possessing a firearm without holding a gun licence.

He was remanded at large for sentencing on January 30.

The court was told police uncovered 112 grams of cannabis in Baxter’s home after St John ambulance officers called to request assistance at the address.

During the search police also discovered a .22 rifle and $380 in cash in a wardrobe.

Baxter said his mates chipped in to buy the cannabis and he divvied it up between them. The rifle was used for shooting rabbits, he said.

Judge Maze said there was no mention of the quality or value of the cannabis.

She declined to enter a conviction but said that was no indication of the sentencing outcome.

Karlia Mae Unahi, of Hampstead, admitted charges of obtaining money by deception and dishonestly using a document.

The court was told Unahi had defrauded the Ministry of Social Development to the tune of $45,000 over a three year period, during which she received a sole parent benefit but failed to disclose her relationship status.

She was convicted and remanded at large for sentencing on January 30, when an electronically monitored sentence will be on the table.

Julie Marie Cain, of Timaru, was convicted and remanded at large on a charge of shoplifting. The matter was referred to restorative justice ahead of Cain’s sentencing on February 7.

Elvis Purua of Hampstead, was sentenced to 80 hours of community work and ordered to pay reparations of $660, on three counts of shoplifting.

Hayden Johnston, 18, of Rakaia, appeared for sentencing on charges of assault, threatening behaviour, breaching a community work sentence and two of driving while forbidden.

He was remanded on bail for sentencing on January 10 to enable probation services to ascertain the suitability of a proposed address for an electronically monitored sentence.

Jessica Jeni Sutherland, 23, of Ashburton, was convicted of offering to supply methamphetamine and cannabis, possessing utensils and dishonestly taking a motor vehicle. She will be sentenced on January 14.

Judge Maze requested the presentence report include options for an electronically monitored sentence.

Tyler Daniel Croll-Davis, 21, of Allenton, admitted assaulting a woman, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and failing to stop for police signals. He was remanded in custody for sentencing on December 19.

Justice Kauwere Grant, 19, of Netherby, appeared on charges of assaulting a woman, dangerous driving, failing to stop to ascertain injury, driving while his licence was suspended, twice breaching bail conditions and intentional damage.

Grant’s troubles began when the vehicle he was driving collided with another vehicle on Thompsons Track on July 16, causing it to careen across the road into a third vehicle halted at a giveway sign. All the vehicles were extensively damaged.

Grant then flagged down another motorist and decamped. He walked into the Ashburton Police Station to fess up four days later.

The assault charges came about after Grant visited a former partner uninvited and refused to leave the property on July 24. The victim eventually went to bed, leaving him to sleep on the couch. She later awoke to find Grant in her bed.

The ensuing argument escalated into punching, pushing and slapping. Damage to the tune of $445 was caused to the Housing New Zealand property.

Grant was convicted and remanded on bail for sentencing on February 7. The matter was referred to restorative justice.

Sandra Elaine Southby, 43, of Christchurch was disqualified from driving for six months and sentenced to nine months’ supervision for driving with an excess breath alcohol level of 907 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath (EBA 907mcg/l).

Police were alerted to Southby’s erratic driving on Thompsons Track by another motorist on November 5, after which an officer observed her driving on the roadside verge for 20 metres.

Donald Lawrence Finch, 48, of Ashburton, admitted his fifth drink driving charge (EBA 821mcg/l). He was further convicted of driving while disqualified.

He was sentenced to six months’ community detention and nine months’ supervision, and disqualified from driving for 12 months and one day, after which he must obtain and use a zero alcohol licence.

Judge Maze declined Finch permission to apply for an alcohol interlock licence in the interests of public safety.

Cody Elvy, 19, of Rakaia, appeared to face two counts of drink driving – both incurred on the same day, topping off another drink driving conviction last year.

Elvy was booked in Rakaia at about 9.30am on November 11, where an evidential breath test revealed a level of 483 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

He was ordered not to drive for 24 hours.

However, by his own admission, he continued to drink and police stopped him in Ashburton 12 hours later – this time with a breath alcohol level of 392mcg/1, putting him well above the limit for an under 20-year-old driver.

Offending ‘odd, very silly’ A teenager who spent a night fetching wooden pallets from Mitre 10 Mega and stole electronic equipment from The Warehouse was sentenced in the Ashburton District Court this week.

Royce Cole-Taylor Morgans, 18, of Ashburton, had earlier admitted two charges of burglary, incurred after he twice broke into a gardening centre, once

stealing biscuits.

Overnight on August 3-4, Morgan used a tractor with forks on the front to collect 71 pallets from Mitre 10 Mega, requiring 15 trips. Only six of the pallets were not damaged, resulting in a reparation bill of $2200.

Morgan said he stole them to use for firewood.

On August 8, he removed a television set and a stereo unit

valued at $869, from The Warehouse in Ashburton.

After putting the items in his vehicle he returned to the store to buy a drink.

When spoken to, Morgans told police he stole the equipment to repay a debt.

His lawyer, Michelle Barrell described the offending as “odd, spontaneous and very silly”.

She had earlier asked for a re-

port to ascertain his fitness to stand trial.

Judge Joanna Maze sentenced Morgans to 12 months supervision, to include counselling and courses, and 100 hours of community work.

He must also make good $2200 in reparations for the damaged pallets and $1450 for the damage caused when he broke into the gardening centre.

Guilty plea to driving while suspended From P6 Stacey May Cunningham, 33, of Allenton, admitted a charge of driving while suspended.

She was convicted, disqualified from driving for six months and fined $200.

Jason Henry Forsyth, 33, of Allenton, admitted a charge of driving while his licence was suspended.

He was disqualified from

driving for six months and fined $400.

Kadsan Molino Gasper, 38, of Hororata, admitted charges of drink driving, careless use of a motor vehicle and driving alone on a learner’s licence.

Gasper’s vehicle failed to negotiate a bend and drove through a fence on the Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road.

He was taken to hospital where an evidential blood test

revealed he had been driving with a blood alcohol level of 134 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

He was convicted, disqualified from driving for six months, fined $850 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Josiah Dolalar Tagicakubau, of Ilam, was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $650 and ordered to pay court

costs of $130 on a charge of drink driving, with a blood alcohol level of 87 millilitres per litre of blood.

He was convicted and discharged on charges of careless use of a motor vehicle and driving without the correct licence.

Arrest warrants were issued for Nicholas Joseph Chapman, Ayden Noel Hill, Natasha Christine Ranson, Joshua Caleb Clark and Adrian Tumai.

Gang members appear in court Patched members and associates of the Head Hunters gang arrested in a series of armed raids across Christchurch yesterday have appeared in court.

After a four-month police probe, search warrants were carried out on a number of properties yesterday, including the gang’s alleged headquarters at Vickerys Road in the Sockburn area of the city.

Several members and associates of gang members have been arrested and charged with offences ranging from participation in an organised crime group to supplying the Class A controlled drug methamphetamine.

Three men appeared from custody at Christchurch District Court yesterday afternoon.

Judge Paul Kellar granted them all interim name suppression after lawyers argued that it was required at this early stage to preserve fair trial rights.

The men will be back in court later this month.

“This action is a clear signal to the gang and organised crime in general that the police will take action to dismantle and disrupt gang crime and the impact of drug dealing in our communities,” Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney said.

London flooding ‘severe’

BY JAMIE JOHNSON More than 100 people were evacuated from an affluent area of north London after a burst water main caused severe flooding.

The neighbourhood of Islington – home to Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary – suffered widespread damage, with trees uprooted by water that left a sodden mass of mud and debris.

Six fire engines and three fire units from neighbouring boroughs were called to Upper Street at 5am after Carl Hufton, a pub owner, spotted the burst pipe while waiting for deliveries.

Thousands of gallons of water gushed into nearby properties, breaking basement windows and causing potentially hundreds of thousands of pounds of damage.

The London Fire Brigade said that, at its peak, the water was two metres high in some basements.

Residents and shopworkers took refuge at the Steam Passage Tavern pub, which was offering soft drinks and cups of tea to those affected.

Upper Street and some surrounding streets remained closed at 1pm and the fire brigade warned road users to avoid the area.

“We are in no doubt that this has caused a huge amount of damage and upset to people’s lives as they prepare for Christmas.”

Earlier this year, the world misread another kangaroo-based scenario, when we all thought a male kangaroo was grasping his

dying mate for one last family hug with their joey.

Oh how wrong we were.

Rather than trying to cradle the dying partner, the male kangaroo was trying to mate with her one last time.

“The male is clearly highly

stressed and agitated, his forearms are very wet from him licking himself to cool down,” Dr Eldridge said at the time.

“He is also sexually aroused: The evidence is here sticking out from behind the scrotum (yes, in marsupials the penis is located behind the scrotum).”

But in this case, it looks like no love was shared between the two animals – perhaps just a little bit of confusion.

“The kangaroo didn’t seem to be biting the dog, I think he was pretty confused,” Dr Eldridge said.

“Maybe the kangaroo was just having a hold of the dog and didn’t know what to do next, because normally it would use his legs to kick in a fight.

“Male kangaroos will try to scratch and wrestle before sometimes putting an opponent in a headlock.

“It’s a tactic when bucks fight.

“The kangaroo could’ve potentially choked the dog, but it was wearing armour so that may have protected it from the full force.”

Goat goes on rampage An escaped goat has caused havoc after being denied entry to a shop in Northern Ireland. The animal charged towards a pensioner, named Billy, and jumped on cars and devoured pot plants during a half-hour rampage. Shop manager Jonathan Smyth said he initially mistook the sound of the goat head-butting the window for a bread delivery. He said: “I thought it was the bread man but when I turned around I just saw this massive goat standing on its two hind legs. It seemed like it wanted to come into the shop and was looking straight at me.”

House of horrors sold The liquidator of Josef Fritzl’s estate says the house where the Austrian kept his daughter captive for 24 years and fathered seven of her children has been sold.

Walter Anzboeck says the house in Amstetten, west of Vienna, was sold for €160,000. State broadcaster ORF cites innkeeper Herbert Hauska as saying his wife Ingrid and a business partner bought the building and will turn it into apartment units. He said today that it is time “to bring down the curtain” on the house’s past.

Hauska said: “It can’t stay empty for ever. We need to bring life into it. In two years it will be a house like any other.”

Take one look at the headlock, and you’d agree that Max the hunting dog is pretty lucky to be alive.

Earlier this week, footage of zookeeper Greig Tonkins sent the world into meltdown after he went toe-to-toe with an Eastern Grey kangaroo during a hunting trip in June.

Mr Tonkins, who struck the roo in the face with a right hook, did so to protect his beloved dog Max, who had just been released from a headlock seconds earlier.

Typically, according to kangaroo expert Dr Mark Eldridge from the Australian Museum, kangaroos usually flee when they spot a dog or dingo.

So what was this buck thinking?

T

he year may be winding down but its capability to stun us is certainly burning as brightly as ever.

In a recent Guardian editorial some of 2016’s highlights and lowlights were discussed.

From celebrity deaths like Prince, Bowie and Rickman, to name a few, to the Brits voting for Brexit and Trump not only shocking the United States, but the world, with his victory in the race to the White House over Hillary Clinton.

Now New Zealand politics has joined the party, albeit in a more modest and less dramatic way, but you can bet it will spark plenty of debate.

Since John Key’s shock announcement, naturally we’ve asked - who’s going to take the big job?

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman, Treasurer and Finance Minister Bill English and now, to make it a three horse race, Corrections and Police Minister Judith Collins has confirmed she will run as National Party leader to replace John Key. Collins threw her hat in the ring after English and Coleman announced their ambitions.

They all have history, some good, and some quite the opposite.

Coleman is selling himself as the candidate for change.

Collins simply as the right person for the job.

While English, who has been endorsed by Key, is insistent that the hiding National received at the polls while under his leadership in 2002 would not happen again due to him being older and wiser. There will be much discussion in living rooms, universities, schools and even bars across New Zealand concerning who would be best to lead our country.

Discussion, debate, conversation, whatever you want to call it, there’s been plenty of that this year and it’s been tiring to say the least!

But we should do our best not to get too caught up in the passion our opinions evoke.

Whatever the outcome, English, Coleman or Collins, we can be sure that animated discussion will rattle on for a long time.

The freedom to question and query is our right, but we should also be considerate towards those with differing views.

Debate is great, but only with respect.

Laying strong foundations Donna Favel

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

I

t’s been an amazingly busy start to the new Ashburton District council term. But I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

With a new mayor and seven new councillors, we have needed to get to know each other and lay the foundations for strong working relationships in the years ahead.

Our new councillors have also had to get their heads around council processes, the planning and work that is needed before meetings, and the many ongoing issues in our district.

As elected members, it is an important part of our role, to respond to issues that are concerning people in our community.

Since I became mayor, I have certainly noticed an increase in the number of people bringing their concerns to me.

It is a privilege and one of the best aspects of my job to listen to them and help them find solutions to problems.

I have noticed that some of the unexpected issues that come across my desk are purely council related; others are community-based, where I can play a small part; and a small number are outside of my area of responsibility, involving other agencies and other ways of finding resolutions.

The published increase in crime statistics and police resourcing in the Ashburton District is one community concern that I think deserves a strong response from your mayor and the wider council.

At the moment, the number of police in our district seems to be below the national recommended level of one to every 500 people.

This does not mean that our district is unsafe, or that our

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel presides over her first council meeting as mayor. policing team is doing a bad job, but we simply could have a better service for local residents and the police that work here.

Our local police are under a lot of pressure and we could have a much better response time when we need them.

The geography of our district does the police no favours. Travelling long distances between incidents means that they can quickly become stretched, if numbers are insufficient.

As well as talking to our local

head of police senior sergeant Scott Banfield, I have begun speaking to our MP Jo Goodhew and am raising my concerns with the Minister of Police about this issue and will keep you informed through this column.

Another pressing issue for our council is to decide on the best place for our civic centre and library rebuild.

Opus is expected to provide us with a summary of feedback from community consultation and a recommended final site

Cat videos rule on the net

BY NICHOLAS JONES Whether Facebook’s sucking up of advertising revenue will lead to more cat videos on news websites has been a talking point at a hearing into a proposed media merger.

The Commerce Commission is holding a two-day conference at its Wellington offices to hear submissions on the proposed merger of New Zealand’s two largest newspaper and online news publishers, NZME and Fairfax.

NZME owns major brands including the New Zealand Herald and Newstalk ZB, while Fairfax owns the Stuff website and papers the Dominion Post, the Press and others.

Yesterday’s discussion concerned online news and reader-

ship. The commission’s view is the merger would substantially lessen competition, and affect the quality of journalism.

The companies argued they were not each other’s major competition, and other organisations including TVNZ, Radio NZ and Mediaworks were strong competitors in a “digital first” environment where traditional print and broadcast boundaries were broken down.

But another organisation that loomed larger over the discussion was Facebook, which takes a growing share of advertising, despite not producing news content.

Fairfax executive editor Sinead Boucher said Facebook was an “enormous competitor”.

Customers ‘don’t care’ Netflix has addressed why its movie library is often deemed to be so mediocre, and the reason is because the company just doesn’t think it matters.

Speaking at the UBS Global Media and Communications conference in New York this week, the company’s head of content Ted Sarandos explained why the streaming giant isn’t that fussed about filling its platform full of top-notch flicks.

Apparently, customers just don’t care that much.

According to the Netflix exec, subscribers spend about the same time watching movies on the service regardless of the depth or perceived quality of the movie library.

“No matter what, we end up with about one-third of our watching being movies,” he told the audience.

According to Business Insider, Mr Sarandos cited two contrasting examples of the United States and Canada as proof of such behaviour.

In Canada Netflix has five major deals with movie studios to use their content while in the US the company basically has none, with the exception of the recently signed Disney deal.

Despite US subscribers having far less access to movies from big studios, both countries spend roughly the same proportion of their time on the service watching movies.

Netflix believes that by the time many blockbuster movies make it onto the platform – many months after being released in the cinema – a majority of fans have already seen them.

“If you were passionate (about a movie), you’ve already seen it,” he said.

While he added that Netflix is definitely “happy to have” those sorts of blockbuster movies, having all the big hits won’t necessarily increase participation on the service.

The family that owns the Bluebridge Cook Strait ferry service has sold the bulk of its transport business to an Australian equity company. Champ Private Equity has agreed to buy Strait Shipping, owner of Bluebridge, and Freight Lines from the Barker family, it was announced yesterday.

No price was mentioned in the announcement.

In 2016 it pledged $US5 billion ($A6.49 billion) for producing original content and earmarked another $US6 billion ($A7.78 billion) for the same purpose in 2017.

A vast majority of that has gone into creating originals TV series such as House of Cards, The Crown, Barry, Narcos, The Get Down and Stranger Things.

During the New York conference, Sarandos also spoke of Netflix’s intention to significantly boost its non-scripted offerings by releasing 20 unscripted series next year, referring to the genre as “a very interesting business.”

He believes the company’s strong suit when it comes to the genre is its ability to syndicate its shows worldwide.

Foreign ownership of companies listed on the New Zealand sharemarket has risen to 36.3 per cent, its highest level since June 2010, according to JBWere’s Foreign Ownership Survey.

However, ownership by local retail investors fell 4 per cent, hitting 23.2 per cent, its lowest level in four years. Bernard Doyle, head of JB Were’s investment strategy, said the increase in foreign ownership in recent years has been driven by institutional fund managers hunting for yield in a global low-interest rate environment.

Beef shin ragu with fresh pappardelle Serves 4-6 800g Quality Mark beef shin 2T butter 1 large onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed 2 sticks celery, finely chopped 2 carrots, finely chopped 2T fresh oregano leaves, chopped (or use 2t dried) 3T tomato paste 2 anchovy fillets, chopped 1C red wine (or use extra stock) 2C Campbell’s Real Stock – No Added Salt Beef 1 bay leaf Cooked pappardelle (or tagliatelle) Fresh Parmesan, grated ■ Preheat the oven to 150°C. ■ Season the beef with a little salt and pepper. Heat a dash of oil in a large frying pan over a very high heat and sear the beef to brown all over (you may need to do this in two batches).

■ Set the beef aside. Reduce the heat to medium, add the butter and another dash of oil to the pan and cook the onion, garlic, celery, carrot and oregano for about 7-10 minutes until the vegetables are soft. Add the tomato paste and anchovies and cook for another few minutes.

■ Add the wine, turn up the heat and let it bubble for 30 seconds. Add the stock and the bay leaf. If your pan is ovenproof, add the beef and its juices back to the pan and cover

with the lid or transfer everything to a covered casserole dish.

Bake in the oven for three hours, stirring a couple of times to ensure the beef stays mostly covered with liquid.

Remove the meat with tongs and place on a clean board. Remove and discard the bones and pull the beef into chunks with two forks.

If necessary, at this point you can simmer the sauce in a saucepan on the stovetop to reduce and thicken it. Add the meat back into the sauce, taste and season as required.

Spoon the meat sauce on to the hot pasta and sprinkle with grated Parmesan and chopped parsley. Serve with a side of green salad.

Good honest tucker from Farming Mums W

hen it comes to good, honest cooking it takes a lot to go past the skills of rural women.

Providing good meals for large numbers is often just part of rural life and generations of rural youngsters have learned great skills in farm kitchens often more by necessity than desire.

Over generations it’s become something of a Kiwi tradition that farming mums can be counted on to turn on a great meal or great baking.

And recognising that a group of modern day rural women launched a Facebook page Farming mums NZ that united like-minded women and from that group a cookbook, Farming Mums NZ was born.

Quick bacon pasta bake 2T oil 1 onion, chopped 250g bacon, sliced 500g packet of pasta 1C frozen peas 1C frozen corn 1/2 C cream 2 eggs 1C cheese, grated 1/2 C water from pasta Salt and pepper

■ ■ ■ ■

Vegetable balti 1T oil 1/4 pumpkin, peeled and cubed 1 diced onion 1t crushed garlic 2t crushed ginger 1 can drained and rinsed chickpeas 1t dried coriander 1/2 t cumin 1/4 t turmeric 1/4 t cinnamon Salt and pepper 1/2 C vegetable stock 1T tomato paste 1C frozen peas Spicy tomato soup.

■ Season with salt and pepper.

Roastie cous cous salad

■ Cook pasta according to pack directions.

■ When pasta is almost cooked add peas and corn. Cook until al dente.

■ Drain, reserving 1/2 C water.

■ Add oil to pan and lightly fry bacon and onion.

■ In bowl mix cream and eggs.

■ Add pasta water and half the cheese. Mix well.

■ Add pasta, peas and corn to pan with bacon and onions.

■ Pour cream mixture over and stir well.

■ Add remaining cheese and cook until thickened.

Sprinkle one flake over berries.

Cover with custard.

Top with whipped cream.

Sprinkle with second flake.

2C vegetables of your choosing, to roast Drizzle of olive oil Drizzle of balsamic vinegar 1T crushed garlic 410g tin chickpeas, drained 1/2 preserved lemon, finely chopped 1C couscous 1/2 bag spinach 1/2 block feta ■ Prepare vegetables and cut into small dice.

■ Place in roasting dish with oil and balsamic.

■ Dot with garlic and half preserved lemon.

■ Bake until tender but not falling apart.

■ Add chickpeas and cook another

5 mins.

■ Put couscous in bowl and season.

■ Add remaining preserved lemon.

■ Cover with boiling water and place plate on top.

■ Stand five minutes.

■ Fluff with fork.

■ Place spinach and feta in large bowl.

■ Add roasted vegetables.

■ Then add couscous and mix well with fork.

■ If too dry add a little oil.

Spicy tomato soup 2 tins chopped tomatoes 1 tin chilli beans 1 red onion, chopped 1 red pepper, chopped 2 chorizo sausages, sliced Salt and pepper Chilli powder

■ Heat a dash of oil in a pan and saute onions and pepper.

■ Add tomatoes and chilli beans and a little water if needed.

■ Stir well and simmer 30 mins, stirring occasionally.

■ Season with salt and pepper.

■ Add chopped chorizo and a pinch of chilli powder.

■ Simmer 5 mins.

Baileys trifle 400g sponge cake 4T Baileys Irish Cream (or more) 410g tin boysenberries, drained 500ml custard 300ml whipped cream 2 flake bars

■ Heat oil in large pan.

■ Saute onion, garlic and ginger.

■ Add pumpkin and chickpeas and stir.

■ Add remaining spices and stir well.

■ Add stock and tomato paste and stir through.

■ Add peas and cook 3 minutes.

■ Serve with rice and green vegetables.

Beer bread 3C flour 3t baking powder 1t salt 400ml beer 1/2 C grated cheese ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Mix baking powder, flour, salt and beer in large bowl.

■ Tip into greased 21 x 12cm loaf tin.

■ Sprinkle with cheese.

■ Bake 50-60 minutes.

■ Leave to cool in tin before turning on to wire rack.

Midweek Munchies ■ Break sponge into pieces and place in serving dish.

■ Pour Baileys over the sponge.

■ Add drained boysenberries and spread evenly.

Ashburton College’s Year 9/10 cricket team’s fine run of form continued at Rangiora’s Dudley Park at the weekend with a convincing 65-run victory over the Rangiora Gold side.

The College batsmen posted 170 for 9 off their allotted 40 overs.

Liam Sullivan (43), Jonty Small (27) and Tom Middleton (26) were all in fine form with the bat.

The Rangiora boys could only muster 105 all out in the 30th over as James Medlock played the role of chief destroyer, taking three for one in a fine display with the ball.

U17s’ tail wags Mid Canterbury Cricket’s under 17 rep side went down to Canterbury Country in the first of their 60-over games at Mandeville yesterday, but a last-wicket partnership caused plenty of excitement. Country were all out for 176. Mid Canterbury opener Tom Ravenscroft put on 42 to help the chase but it was not looking good at 98-9 when Richard Turpie joined Gareth Hunt at the crease. The pair dug in and had built a 46-run partnership when Turpie was caught behind in the 52nd over; the side all out for 144.

Head ‘thriving’ In South Australian cricket’s darkest hour Travis Head accepted a role that belied his first-class experience. Rich Hill Mile on the agenda Tim and Margaret Carter are regrouping with Battle Time after a reversal of fortune last time out at Trentham.

The Cambridge trainers produced the four-year-old for an all the way win in last month’s Gr.2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile before he faded out of contention in the Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes after being taken on in front.

“We’ve dissected the race a 100 times and we’re thinking we shouldn’t have gone forward now, but hindsight’s a great thing,” Tim Carter said.

“He got taken on by Julinsky Prince a bit and when Aide Memoire came up he just didn’t kick and got unbalanced.

“It was another learning curve for the horse and the trainers.

“He’s as good as gold and straight after the race he was eating and since he’s come home he hasn’t left an oat.

“We’ll set him for the Rich Hill Mile and that will be back to handicap and he’ll still get in quite well.”

The stable could be in line for a change of luck in the meantime with Autumn Wind looking a strong chance today in the opening event at Ellerslie, the

Currie, Middaugh team up Red Bull Defiance has attracted one of the finest elite multisport fields with course designer Braden Currie making up one half of a formidable partnership.

Methven’s Currie and American athlete Josiah Middaugh are the fiercest adversaries on the XTERRA circuit, but, for the first time, they will be racing together on January 21 and 22.

Currie said he is pleased to combine forces with Middaugh, and is looking forward to the challenging event.

“It will be awesome that Josiah will have my back for this epic, two-day race, rather than be on my back chasing me down,” said Currie.

“Josiah is such a strong athlete and we have had some massive battles recently.”

Middaugh hasn’t visited New Zealand before and is in for a treat as he joins a sold-out field of 70 teams stage-racing across eight private country stations over 150km by mountain bike, on foot and in kayaks.

“Braden and I have become pretty intense rivals in the sport of XTERRA, so it will be great to team up with him and work together instead of against,” said Middaugh.

“We have similar strengths and I like his attitude, so I think we will make a good team.”

The women’s category features two impressive adventure racing champions who have teamed up

again. Wanaka’s Jo Williams, who was in the Adventure Racing World Championships-winning Team Seagate this month, will race with Christchurch athlete Sia Svendsen.

The newly-launched 43km Minaret Burn Mountain Bike race will be held on January 21, offering a rare opportunity to ride through one of New Zealand’s most iconic high country stations.

The 28km Skyline Traverse mountain run will be held on January 22, and is a true highlight of Red Bull Defiance.

Veteran Melbourne fullback Billy Slater says there’s no guarantee he will play next year with his shoulder still not back to full strength. The 33-year-old, who had a second reconstruction after round one in March, is back in pre-season training with the grand finalists. But he says he won’t play again in the NRL if he’s not comfortable with how the injury has recovered.

Sport Tiger Killer at Millbrook Korea’s YE Yang, the first Asian-born male golfer to win a major, will play at the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open in Queenstown in March. Yang, known as The Tiger Killer after his victory over Tiger Woods at the 2009 US PGA Championship, will compete at the Open at Millbrook Resort and The Hills on March 9-12. Yang, who has had 11 victories as a professional over the past two decades, has amassed more than $15 million in prizemoney around the globe, having played on the PGA Tour, the European Tour, the Japan Golf Tour and the Asian Tour.

Water Ski Lake Hood hosted its annual Pick & Choose tournament on Saturday as the skiers dusted off the cobwebs ahead of the new season.

A number of skiers attended ski schools overseas throughout the winter, and also at Lake Karapiro.

Unfortunately the blustery weather didn’t help their goals

of achieving personal bests, but the northerlies did ease off to allow for some good slalom results in round two.

Local skier Emily Milner scored personal bests in all three events in the junior girls’ section, with a slalom score of 3.5 buoys at 52k, 770 points in tricks, and a 12m jump.

Water Ski Lake Hood secretary Janeen Donaldson said Milner’s progression has been impres-

sive after just one season of competitive action.

“Emily just started skiing competitively last season, and she has a great can-do attitude,” she said.

“This is her first competition score performing tricks with the rope on her toes.”

Sam Bainbridge, from the Northbrooke Waters club in Rangiora, travelled south for three rounds of slalom for a

crack at the New Zealand sub juniors’ record.

Twice he scored on the record 16m rope shortening pass at 49k, with scores of one and two buoys, but the record still stands at 5.25 buoys.

Lake Hood’s Gavin Green was also pleased with his fine second round display after reaching his existing NZ record of 12m pass at 55k, scoring 0.25 buoys.

Cook Ashes skipper?

Coach Trevor Bayliss expects Alastair Cook to lead England into next year’s Ashes. Cook, who has captained his country more times than anyone else, recently admitted he did not know how long he would remain in the job, suggesting it could be as little as two months.
