Meetings of the Ashburton District Council might not be officially live streamed, but there’s nothing to stop individuals turning up and recording proceedings, says council chief executive Andrew Dalziel. Many local authorities now record meetings and make these available for viewing on their websites, but the Ashburton council has not gone down that path – yet, Dalziel said. Several members of the Ashburton Citizens’ Association have said they’re keen to see the council meetings recorded and made available for anyone to watch away from the council table. Co-secretary Kate White said she knew

of many people who were unable to attend meetings but who were keen to follow council debate. “It’s a great way to break down barriers and particularly in the lead up to an election it would allow people to get an idea how councillors perform,” she said. When live streaming was used with the Waiheke community board, it attracted 400 viewers of its first session, White said. “They used a tripod and a cellphone that’s all that was needed so the cost has to be minimal, the council could easily set this up.” While the council wasn’t recording meetings, that didn’t stop anyone else stepping up and filling the recording gap, Dalziel said.

“There’s nothing stopping anyone approaching the chairperson of a committee if they want to live stream a meeting. We’re not set up to do it and there’s a cost; we’d rather an outside party did it. It’s just a courtesy that they ask, but I don’t think there’s any valid reason to object.” Currently the council did not have the budget to record and download meetings onto its website, but any member of the public could set up a tripod and using a smart phone could record and replay meetings, he said.
