Luxton to speak at House opening BY COLIN WILLISCROFT

Honoured but more than a little nervous – that’s been Jo Luxton’s lot over the past few days after being chosen to give her maiden speech at the opening of Parliament tomorrow. The Hinds-based Labour List MP will join another first-term Labour MP, Tamati Coffey, in the Address in Reply debate, Coffey being the mover and Luxton the seconder. “It’s very exciting but pretty nerveracking,” Luxton said of being given the honour of speaking at Parliament’s 52nd opening. “I was originally going to speak on the 15th (of November) but then I got an email to say that the Prime Minister
would like myself and Tamati Coffey to make our maiden speeches at the opening. “I’m really honoured to be asked.” It meant she was very busy working on her speech over the weekend. “It’s been good though. I’ve had great support from my mentor, Maryan Street, and I’ve also had a phone call from Annette King. “It’s very nice to have support from those who know what it’s like,” Luxton said of the advice she’s received from the two former Labour MPs. The only public speaking Luxton has done in the past was on the recent campaign trail, so it’s all a bit new to her. “It doesn’t come easily,” she said. “I do get nervous but I guess it will get better.”
Don’t get
She expects the audience on Wednesday to be supportive, although there will be plenty of pressure “because everyone will be focused on what we’re saying,” she said. Luxton said before she sat down to write her speech she thought carefully about the things that were important to her, and although the 15-minute time allocation initially looked daunting, that feeling didn’t last long. “At the start I thought 15 minutes was going to be really hard but in the end I could have written more.”
