International act’s popularity necessitates extra show

An unusual combination of Irish dancing and magic has proven so popular with locals that an international act has had to add a second show to their stop-off while touring the country.

Tickets flew out the door for the first Celtic Illusion show at Ashburton Trust Event Centre on September 15 and now a matinee will be held on the same day.

The show, which first premiered in Australia in 2011, brings together mind-bending magic tricks, an enthralling soundtrack and some of the fastest tap dancing in the world.

Casey Rose at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre said since tickets hit the market last month, the first show had sparked so much interest that they were hoping for another sell-out.

Two New Zealand dancers have recently joined the international line-up.

Samantha Tait, a 19-year-old dancer from Wellington and Shimna Higgins, a 19-year-old violinist and fiddler from Auckland will join performers from Rhythms of Ireland, Riverdance and Lord of the Dance.

The show is led by acclaimed performer Anthony Street and includes music produced by Angela Little, who co-composed Baz Luhrman’s film Australia and Steve Skinner who has arranged and produced for artists like Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder and the Broadway Musical Rent.

The show first premiered in Australia 2011 and has made its way around the world.The first leg of their New Zealand tour in Tauranga, Hamilton and Taupo had already been a big success, Rose said.

It is the first time the performers have come to Ashburton.

He believes changing the right and left turn options in and out of some side streets is key in improving traffic flows and access to the highway.

He’s keen to make significant changes at the Melcombe Street

viaduct, wanting to can a righthand turn from the State Highway and to have a left turn only from the viaduct onto the highway heading into Ashburton.

Compton Street would be the first right turn opportunity for southbound traffic wanting to access Tinwald west.

“Yes, it’s a lot further south, but it’s a much safer option and there’s more area for stacking traffic in the flush median,” Fauth said.

He’s also keen to remove the

left-hand turn option into Carters Terrace, making Wilkins Street the first option for traffic wanting to access Tinwald’s east from the state highway.

Northbound traffic wanting to turn right would use Manchester rather than Wilkins Street.

Fauth also wants to relocate both cycle lanes – the eastern lane onto the footpath and the western onto Melcombe Street and that would provide extra width for the central flush median.

A traffic management plan was

prepared for the Tinwald corridor in 2015, it was considered at government level but was not given priority funding.

There was still some call for traffic lights in Tinwald, but these had been discussed and they were the first solution discarded in the original plan and that was by all stakeholders, Fauth said.

A combination of smaller changes, rather than traffic lights or roundabout that were on the original wish list would make a significant difference to traffic

flows, but even though they came at a much lower cost, the projects would still have to climb the NZTA approval hurdle, he said.

“Whether we have any success is anyone’s guess. It’s NZTA’s road and anything that happens on it has to be done by them.”

Fauth said his sole objective was to make the highway as safe as possible for all users.

“We’re arguing the case with them and we are getting some traction at the bottom end, but we need a whole lot more.”

Open to farm plastic waste

Bale wrap, silage covers and other plastic waste generated on farms is the product that no one wants, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be left lying around on farms, an Ashburton recycling expert says.

Overseas markets for the waste product have all but closed, but Ashburton District Council resource recovery manager Craig Goodwin says the material still needs to be collected, baled and stored against the day when an on-shore processing plant opens.

Until the end of last month balewrap and other farm plastics were collected by a private operator for Wastebusters but that service ceased on August 31.

The collection job is not something the council will pick up; it’s an opportunity for a private operator, Goodwin said, but the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park will accept waste that farmers or their private contractors deliver.

“We’re basically waiting to see what happens. It’s a self funding scheme so there is an opportunity for a local business.”

The important thing is that the

product is not left lying around on farms, he said.

“Unfortunately there’s no market for this material at the moment, but we’ve always received it and will continue to receive it and we’ll bale it and store it on site. This is not an insurmountable problem.”

The park had plenty of space to store bales of plastic wrap and while the perception was that there was a sea of the material generated each year, the resource recovery park has the capacity to bale and store this, Goodwin said.

“We want farmers to know that if they’ve got any of this material around they should bring it in.

Wastebusters have given us a list of 235 farms they collect from but that includes the Selwyn District and we’d need to look whether we spent ratepayers’ money on another baler to do all of this.”

There were on-shore processing options under discussion but it could take a year or so before a solution was found, Goodwin said.

“We have to move away from the idea of shifting our rubbish across the ocean to recycle. We need to take responsibility for this and do it here.”

The event was organised by the New Zealand Chess Federation, and saw trophies handed out for the top primary, intermediate and secondary competitors.

Ashburton Chess Club’s Ken Pow said it was around the eighth time Ashburton Intermediate had hosted the championship.

The standard of play was high, as all competitors had already qualified for the national championships, he said.

Police latest in major pay negotiations Police officers have “totally” rejected the latest pay offer, reigniting concerns about senior, experienced officers leaving in droves.

The organisation is the latest to be involved in major pay negotiations after teachers and nurses recently took part in strikes nationwide.

Sworn police officers can’t legally strike, where as nonsworn staff can.

Police Association president Chris Cahill said the two per cent rise offered over three years fell “well short” of what they had asked for.

He says their 8500 sworn officer members are calling for not only better pay but paid overtime and better recognition of shift work disruption and the increasing risks of the job itself.

And of those set to leave the force if a better offer isn’t made, many of them are experienced officers, he said. “They’re the ones we need the most if we are going to get the best of these new young officers coming through.”

Cahill said they’ve told Police to come back with a far better offer.

“And if that means talking to the Government for more money, then so be it.”

A woman has had a conviction thrown out almost 30 years after she falsely admitted to killing her baby daughter.

In 1989 Terri Louise Friesen, then 21, was found guilty of the manslaughter of her 7-week-old baby, Chantelle, at the conclusion of a jury trial.

The Court of Appeal yesterday quashed Friesen’s conviction.

Outside the courtroom, Friesen told the Herald she was “just overwhelmed, relieved and thankful”.

Law student Kelly Phillips told media she first became aware of Friesen’s case after watching a TVNZ programme called I Am Innocent.

She called Friesen to discuss the case and managed to get private investigator Tim McKinnel on board to get the conviction quashed.

Phillips said she was “shaking” throughout the brief court hearing yesterday.

“I can only imagine what it’s been like for Terri to sit through 30 years of wrongful conviction,” she said.

“Hopefully this is the last time that this painful, horrible memory will be thrown up in her face in the pursuit of justice.”

McKinnel was also present in court and spoke to media outside.

“She’s as innocent as you and I to any offences,” he said.

“Without Kelly, she would still be convicted of killing her own child.”

Phillips said if the criminal justice system was working the way it was supposed to, Friesen’s name would have been cleared long ago.

Friesen falsely confessed to the crime to protect her then-partner, Brownie Walter Broughton. She was sentenced to six months’ supervision.

Thirteen years after taking the fall for a crime she didn’t commit, Friesen was proven innocent when Broughton walked into a Christchurch police station, admitted it was him and begged to be charged with manslaughter.

He confessed to shaking his infant daughter to death and letting his de facto partner take the blame.

Broughton said he had found God and wanted to atone for his sins.

He had earlier approached police in New Plymouth and tried to confess, but no action was taken.

Broughton was eventually convicted in relation to Chantelle’s death – but Friesen’s conviction was never expunged.

After Broughton confessed, Friesen told a court that she falsely admitted shaking the baby because she did not think the baby’s father could handle spending time in jail.

She claimed the police also threatened that if one of them did not own up, her other daughter would be taken into Social Welfare care.

Traffic flow a local work in progress F

or as long as there’s been a main road running from one end of Ashburton to the other, there’s been traffic through Tinwald. And for as long as there’s been traffic, there’s been problems.

Some days it runs like a dream.

There’s very little holdup or need for frustration.

But those occasions aren’t the moments that stick out.

Many will remember the night that the offal spill happened on the Ashburton River bridge, or the various accidents over the years that have brought traffic to a halt through one of the busiest roads

in the district.

There’s also been the recent spike in traffic when big events have been held further south.

And largely it hasn’t been until recently that problems seem to have really escalated to frustratingly high points with residents growing more and more con-

cerned about a lack of attention or care from the New Zealand Transport Authority on the main highway which links the rest of the South Island with the heart of Ashburton.

It’s a kick in the guts that the agency charged with looking after the welfare and safety of people using roads are turning a seemingly blind eye to such a contentious and serious issue for a major township on the Mainland, but luckily for us we have those who are willing to roll their sleeves up and go outside the square to try and make things better.

yesterday at a local roading group makes a whole lot of sense and just goes to show that even though the big corporates might not be interested in helping with the plight, there’s nothing wrong with the smaller cousins rolling their sleeves up and trying to get things sorted themselves.

Traffic lights and roundabouts might be off the table, but the idea of trying to implement some low-cost initiatives might just be what the doctor has ordered.

Earlier this week we published a letter regarding the Tinwald corridor from Brian Goodwin and his concerns around the number of

people trying to cheat the system by sneaking up a side road to re-join the traffic at a later point – which only congests things more.

Improvements in ensuring driving behaviour like that is reduced will undoubtedly help when traffic is at an absolute peak.

As a district it’s really disappointing not to have the support of the NZTA on putting some certainty in place, but it is encouraging to see that our local council is being proactive in its effort to help sort out some of the concerns residents in the region are having with the traffic flow through Tinwald.

acinda Ardern’s Government is making the laws about renting a home fairer and more modern and we want to hear what the people of Ashburton think.

The Government is committed to addressing the country’s current housing crisis on several fronts. We’re building affordable KiwiBuild starter homes for first home buyers. We’re building more state houses, with work already started here in Ashburton.

We’re stopping overseas speculators from purchasing existing homes in New Zealand. And we’re closing tax loopholes that speculators exploit.

Making life better for renters is another important part of our housing plan. And that means making life better for Mid Cantabrians.

Renting has become a life-long reality for many individuals and families. More than a third of all New Zealanders live in rental homes.

Our laws around renters’ rights haven’t kept up. They are still designed around the idea that renting is a short-term arrangement for people without children, and that renters will move frequently rather than set down roots in their community.

We are changing the law to make sure rental houses are warm and dry and also to make renting more stable and secure.

In December 2017, we passed the Healthy Homes Guarantee Act, setting healthy homes standards for rental properties.

And we recently introduced a law to ban letting fees, which will help reduce the cost of securing a rental home.

The next step is to update the Residential Tenancies Act, which is the law that sets the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants.

The changes the Government is looking at include: ■ Limiting rent increases to once a year, and requiring the formula for any rent increases to be included in the tenancy agreement.

■ Stopping rent bidding and making it easier to challenge rents when they are excessive.

■ Making renting more stable by removing no cause terminations and lengthening notice periods for other

terminations by landlords, while also making it easier for landlords to evict antisocial tenants.

■ Giving tenants more ability to make a rental their family home, by making it easier for tenants to have pets and make minor alterations, like hanging pictures.

■ Setting higher standards for boarding houses, and checking that they meet those standards, either through self-certification or a warrant of fitness We want to hear your views.

Chair Watson states it is a nobrainer not to change to the new name as there are no downsides to Braided Rivers Community Trust.

Unfortunately, the business of the trust is a shell of its past when it made a major contribution to our business community and then distributed profits back to the community.

It is still in the trust’s interests to see a vibrant hospitality industry in our district and one that is well respected beyond Ashburton.

To me it is a worrying trend in that several organisations are taking the name Ashburton out and replacing it with Mid Canterbury when promoting our district. This is especially so the Ashburton District Council spending ratepayer money promoting Mid Canterbury.

I will continue to use the word Ashburton with pride.

Trust name. The word licensing must come out. A suggestion for the new name, Ashburton Community Trust.

Slow start for irrigator water

Irrigation users are reducing their water take from Opuha Dam to 75 per cent of their consented volumes as part of a water shortage direction by Environment Canterbury.

A mild winter and low snow levels on the mountain tops led to the direction for the South Canterbury dam from the official start of the irrigation season on Saturday (September 1).

The direction over two weeks was based on advice from the Opihi Environmental Flow Release Advisory Group (OEFRAG), which oversees the lake levels.

Minimum flows have been reduced at the Sale Yard Bridge flow monitoring site from six cubic metres to 5.2m3 for two weeks.

The lake is at 90 per cent capacity which is below historical levels and the snow pack is close to 33 per cent less than the same time during the 2014/15 season.

Leading up to Monday’s good rain of 18.5 millimetres, the rain gauge at the dam had only recorded 42.5mm since June 1.

OEFRAG has taken early steps with water restrictions after the drought of 2014-15 put the lake under pressure.

Restrictions were not put in place until December 1 and the lake and river flows reached low levels with a complete stop to irrigation.

Andrew Mockford said it was likely a similar depth of snow arrived at Fox Peak and Dobson as the 18.5mm of rainfall which was recorded at the dam site so that would help lake levels when it came off the hills. ”It will help, but we are not out of the woods at this stage and we

will have to see what Mother Nature brings to the table.’’

He said the lessons of 2014-15 had been learned and it paid to make early decisions for intervention to be meaningful for the health of the river as there was less leeway in the summer when minimum flows were lower.

Mockford said it was still worthwhile putting in the direction even though the Monday rain increased the flow to 10.4m3 as it would tail off.

tors would start up this month because soil moisture levels were high.

Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation general manager John Wright said it was early days yet for water supply and the scheme had commercial arrangements in place to ensure good supply.

“It doesn’t take too much rain to top things up as we have seen [on Monday] and particularly the upper Plains will be comfortable with what we have got.’’

The scheme took water from alpine-fed Rakaia River and had commercial arrangements with Rangitata Diversion Race Management and TrustPower for other water.

When the Rakaia River gets down to minimum levels its arrangement with TrustPower allows it access to water released from Lake Coleridge.

“That means our reliability is close to 100 per cent including during the summer,’’ said Wright.

The scheme’s ponds, including a new larger pond near Methven due to be operational soon, allows it to deliver water in peak demand. Shareholders include a lot of arable farmers and their peak demand is usually December and January.

Dairy product prices fell at the Global Dairy Trade auction, led by unexpected slides in whole milk powder and butter.

The GDT price index slipped 0.7 per cent from the previous auction two weeks ago.

The average price was $US2980 a tonne, compared with $US3044 a tonne two weeks ago.

Some 38,811 tonnes of product was sold, up from 32,041 tonnes two weeks ago.

Whole milk powder fell 2.2 per cent to $US2821 a tonne.

“There was a greater volume of whole

milk powder sold at this event,” AgriHQ dairy analyst Amy Castleton said in a note, adding that it marked a 33 per cent increase from the August 21 event and 29 per cent climb from the year-earlier event on September 5, 2017.

At the latest GDT auction, butter dropped 2.8 per cent to $US4271 a tonne.

“Butter prices again saw the largest fall,” according to Castleton. “Oceania butter prices are currently the lowest globally, so the market had been anticipating that they would find some support.”

Lactose slipped 0.5 per cent to $US917 a tonne.

Carters Creek to undergo testing

A water sampling regime has begun on Carters Creek in Tinwald to pinpoint possible sources of faecal contamination in the waterway that eventually discharges into Lake Hood.

The creek has been a source of concern for years due to poor water quality, flooding issues and rubbish in it.

The Ashburton Water Zone Committee was told recently that six sites along Carters Creek had been set up to be sampled on a monthly basis from August to January next year.

In addition to the sampling, which will comply with standard Environment Canterbury sampling procedures, Ashburton zone staff will conduct stream walks to identify any obvious sources of contamination.

The investigation will be analysed and compiled in a report to the committee in January or February.

Zone facilitator Dave Moore said in a report that the sampling was being conducted to primarily increase the understanding and address the degree of faecal contamination of the creek.

The sampling will also address other environmental attributes previously investigated, including water clarity (turbidity) and soluble nutrient load (nitrogen and phosphorus) as these were elevated and contributed to eutrophication of Lake Hood.

The relative proportions of the soluble nutrients would assist in identifying potential faecal sources.

Earlier this year, ECan cleared willows above Lake Hood, removed a substantial amount of rubbish from the creek and undertook chemical weed control, with a long-term goal of making it easier to maintain.

Nait calls for 30 new compliance officers By yvonne o’Hara Thirty new compliance officers are being sought nationally to further boost the Ministry of Primary Industries’ (MPI) enforcement and farmer education components of the National Animal Identification and Tracing (Nait) scheme.

The vacancies were advertised last week, with some of the officers to be based in Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill.

A MPI spokesman said the ministry had already significantly stepped up its enforcement of Nait.

“However, this will be further boosted with the introduction of 30 new compliance officer positions in November,’’ he said.

“These officers are currently being recruited and trained.’’

He said the new officers’ key roles would include farmer education and non-compliance detection.

“The role is to educate farmers about complying with Nait.

“But where needed, infringements and prosecutions will occur.’’

The advertisements said the officers’ primary role was to “detect and investigate non-compliance within the Nait scheme’’ as well as monitoring and enforcing animal welfare compliance.

MPI is looking for people who understood the Nait scheme and the NAIT Act, had experience with animal production systems and hold a firearms licence, as part of their role as enforcers of the Animal Welfare Act. “On occasion, to prevent animal suffering, inspectors may be required to euthanise an animal with a firearm.

“In order to be in lawful possession of a firearm, a firearms licence is required.’’

Federated Farmers Southland dairy chairman Hadleigh Germann said it was important that MPI and Nait were effectively resourced, particularly given how important their biosecurity role was.

“Obviously farmers, as taxpay-

“From what I understand other agencies have supported MPI with secondments of staff once the M. bovis situation escalated.

“Federated Farmers views Nait compliance as mandatory.

“While it’s too late for M bovis, having a robust and well utilised Nait system in the future could prove invaluable if we have a similar disease outbreak.

“An easy-to-use Nait system that integrates with other farm management software such as MINDA should not impair dairy farm operations,’’ he said.

North Otago Federated Farmers president and national high country industry group chairman Simon Williamson said Nait needed to “sharpen up’’.

Other aspects of tracing animal movements also had to be improved – including at saleyards and from farm to farm, he said.

He was concerned that lifestyle block owners with small numbers of cattle were not Nait registered, so all their stock movements would go unrecorded.

Williamson believed most farmers complied with Nait.

Wellbeing focus a ‘work in progress’

By Pattrick Smellie The future of work, climate change and inequality are the “defining economic and social issues” for the Labour-led government, Finance Minister Grant Robertson told a three-day international conference on wellbeing economics, but the wellbeing focus it brings to those challenges remains a work in progress.

Opening the conference at Parliament yesterday morning, Robertson said the Government’s determination to use a wellbeing focus in tackling those problems reflected its belief that “we cannot hope to make the best choices for future generations about mitigating climate change or ensuring a just transition to a low carbon world if we do not look at environmental, social and economic implications together”.

“The complex, messy problems that create poverty and inequality require us to look beyond basic economic issues, as essential as they are to solving them, to the wellbeing of our wider communities, the impacts of cultural alienation and our understanding of what makes for security and hope,” he said. However, he indi-

“A common criticism of the framework is that it does not encapsulate a world view that is more collectivist and where concepts of value are not so easily separated into clearly defined capitals or disaggregated wellbeing domains,” he said.

“Some interesting ideas are emerging that actually help to draw together the notion of wellbeing. One example draws on a tikanga Maori concepts such as manaakitanga (care/respect), kaitiakitanga (guardianship or stewardship) and whanaungatanga (connectedness and relationships) to draw together into waiora or wellbeing.”

Among the issues Robertson said needed further exploration were: how to weight the relative merits of each of the four sources of capital – natural, social, environmental and economic; how to

“The word ‘capital’ itself is so value-laden that even used in its literal form (an accumulation of value) it causes concerns,” he said. “But it is important that the framework is rigorous and grounded.”

There were also questions about the “underlying assumptions within the measurement of capitals”.

“For example, the continued use of the System of National Accounts and its undervaluing of so-called ‘unpaid work’. Can the framework truly provide an adequate gender analysis in this respect?” Robertson said.

“It is clear that there are information gaps and there will be proxy indicators or, indeed in some cases, no indicators at all while better data is identified or created. The framework and our wellbeing approach must continue to evolve.

“There are significant challenges. The biggest among those for me is making sure that the approach genuinely reflects Aotearoa New Zealand and our values.”

That meant including a Maori world view and taking into account the values of the substantial New Zealand Pasifika community.

Chronic under-investment, a lack of understanding of what customers want and seriously deficient IT systems were just some of the criticisms laid by incoming Smiths City chairman Alastair Kerr on his predecessors at the company’s annual meeting yesterday.

Kerr said the furniture and appliance retailer’s shocking 2018 result – a $7.2 million after-tax loss in the year to April 2018, compared with a $2.4 million profit the previous year – came off the back of under-investment in information systems and in the store network, and in some areas from losing touch with its customers.

“Many of our stores have not kept pace with expectations on how products should be displayed and sold,” Kerr told investors in Christchurch yesterday.

“We have not been selling the products customers want and we have not been making the most of the customers that walk in the door.

“Our patchwork of legacy systems at best results in delays in answering customer queries and processing transactions. At worst, it disappoints them with inaccurate information, or results in poor customer fulfilment.

“Our current systems also give us little insight into what is driving customer behaviour.”

Smiths City was founded in Christchurch in 1918 by Henry Cooper Smith as an auction house for grain and produce, and Smith later branched into auctioning livestock and reconditioned farm

But the centenary has brought little joy for the retailer, apart from a shindig in Christchurch. Revenue for the 2018 year was down 5.1 per cent to $215.9 million from $227.4 million, and pre-tax earnings slumped from a $2 million profit in the 2017 financial year to a loss of $9.9 million this year.

The company took a $4.9 million hit for leases on unprofitable stores it had to close, including all the appliance-only stores. And it was stung for $1.5 million by an Employment Court decision in May that staff attending so-called “voluntary” morning meetings, held in all stores before they open

each day at 9am, must be paid for being there.

The retailer also announced in July this year that as part of a renewed commitment to staff, it would be paying at least the living wage of $20.55 in 2018 to all employees from the beginning of October.

In a frank new-broom-sweepsclean speech at the AGM, Kerr pointed to significant board changes.

In May, Kerr replaced former chair Craig Boyce, who had spent 30 years with Smiths City.

Kerr has experience with retailers Marks and Spencer, Mothercare, Virgin and The Body Shop.

Two other new-ish board members, Ben Powles and Tony Karp, replace Gary Rohloff and Sheena Henderson.

But turning around the retailer wouldn’t be easy, Kerr said.

“What I want to make clear is that this is not going to be a quick fix, nor is it going to come cheap.

Significant investment in the basic infrastructure of the business is required. We need to continue to refresh our store formats and implement modern information systems ... We also need to continue to invest in the product range and the training and development of our people.”

Only when the company “is growing and sustainably and generating cash in excess of its investment requirements” will it start paying a dividend again, Kerr said.

Dividends were suspended in June.

The shares were unchanged at 34.5 cents, having slumped 43 per cent so far this year.

■ Lightly flour the bench. Roll one sheet of pastry out a little more until 3mm in thickness.

Place on a lamb rump (cut the pastry so it is square, ensuring you have enough to cover the lamb). Bring 2 opposite corners together, brush the edges with egg wash and crimp together.

Repeat on the other side until the lamb rump is completely enclosed in the pastry. Place on the prepared tray. Repeat with remaining lamb rump. Brush the pastry well with the egg wash and make small slits in the top of the pastry, for the steam to escape. Place in the fridge to rest and firm for 30 minutes.

■ Remove from the fridge, brush with the remaining egg wash and sprinkle with a little flaky sea salt and a few sesame seeds.

20 minutes, then remove from the oven and rest for 8-10 minutes before slicing.

Preheat the oven to 190°C. Cut potatoes into even-sized pieces. Place in a saucepan with cold water to just cover, lightly salt and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and cook for 5 minutes. Drain and dry off over the heat. Place into a roasting dish, toss with the oil and thyme and season. Place in the oven and roast for 30 minutes until golden and crisp.

In a wide saucepan, heat the red wine and reduce by half. Add the beef stock and reduce by half again. Add the butter and swirl until glossy. Season.

Slice each Lamb Wellington in half and serve with the sauce, potatoes and steamed green vegetables.

Oz slippers recovered

A tanker slammed into the side of a bridge connecting the airport to the mainland, during a powerful typhoon, damaging part of the bridge and the vessel in Osaka, western Japan.

A rare pair of red sequined slippers that Judy Garland wore in the classic film The Wizard of Oz have been found, the FBI announced yesterday, nearly 13 years after the iconic shoes were stolen from the actress’ birthplace. The shoes, estimated to be worth at least $1 million, had been kept in a Plexiglass case atop a podium inside the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. On August 28, 2005, burglars (or a burglar) broke into the museum and smashed the case.

Investigators estimated that the heist took only seconds. At a news conference yesterday, investigators unveiled the once-missing shoes.

Jebi batters mainland People stranded at a flooded offshore airport overnight returned by boat and bus to the Japanese mainland yesterday after a typhoon swept across part of Japan’s main island.

Japanese broadcaster NHK showed aerial footage of the boat and a caravan of buses transporting about 3000 people from Kansai International Airport across a partially damaged bridge under sunny skies. The airport that serves Osaka, one of Japan’s largest cities, remains closed.

Typhoon Jebi peeled roofs off buildings, toppled power poles and damaged businesses as it crossed Japan’s main island on Tuesday. Japanese media tallied at least nine deaths, and the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said more than 200 people

were injured.

More than 1 million households remained without power yesterday morning.

Jebi, reportedly the strongest typhoon to make landfall in Japan since 1993, has been downgraded to a tropical storm and is heading north of Japan.

Kansai International Airport is built on artificial islands in Osaka Bay, and the high seas flooded one of its two runways, cargo storage and other facilities, said the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

One passenger was slightly injured by shards from a window shattered by the storm.

A tanker that was mooring slammed into the side of a bridge connecting the airport to the mainland, damaging

the bridge and leaving people stranded overnight, transport ministry official Mitsuo Nakao said.

The tanker was also damaged, but its 11 crew members were not injured, according to the coast guard.

The heavily damaged ship has been pulled away from the bridge into nearby open waters.

The deaths included a man in his 70s who was blown to the ground from his apartment in Osaka prefecture.

Police said five others died elsewhere in the prefecture after being hit by flying objects or falling from their apartments.

In nearby Shiga prefecture, a 71-year-old man died when a storage building collapsed on him, and a man in his 70s

died after falling from a roof in Mie, officials said.

Daihatsu Motor Co. stopped production at its Kyoto and Osaka factories, while Panasonic halted work at its air conditioning and refrigerator factory in Shiga. Major beverage maker Kirin Co. suspended production at its brewery in Kobe, according to Kyodo News agency.

In nearby Nishinomiya in Hyogo prefecture, about 100 cars at a seaside dealership burned after their electrical systems were shorted out by sea water, fire officials and news reports said.

In Osaka, the Universal Studios Japan theme park remained closed for a second straight day. A news release said it would open again today.

Spacey, Seagal won’t be facing charges Kevin Spacey and Steven Seagal won’t face charges for alleged sexual assaults that took place more than 25 years ago, according to the Los Angeles County DA’s office.

Legal documents from the L.A. County District Attorney state that neither will be charged in cases that stem from allegations from the early 90s.

For both cases, the statutes of limitation expired in the late 1990s.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department had been investigation allegations

made in 1992 against Spacey related to sex-crimes, the Daily Mail reports.

A man claimed that Spacey forced himself onto him in West Hollywood and raped him, according to the District Attorney’s worksheet.

“The reporting party alleged that he was the victim of a sexual assault by the suspect in 1992,” the worksheet explained.

“The allegation is outside the statute of limitations, therefore, an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence is not warranted

and prosecutor is declined.”

Spacey is still under investigation for a case prosecutors brought forth last month.

The Oscar winning actor was said to have sexually assaulted a man in Malibu two years ago, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

In the Seagal case that was dropped, an alleged victim claimed that she was raped by the actor in 1993 when she was just 18.

“The statute of limitations expired in 1999.

“Therefore, an analysis

of the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence is not warranted and the matter is declined,” the worksheet explained.

The DA’s office also has one more case to review that involves Seagal.

Most of the allegations brought forth by the plethora of Hollywood sexual abuse cases have been dropped by the specially created task force.

For most of the allegations, they fall outside of the statute of limitations.

Ashburton Golf Club A couple of bunnies showed their teeth and nipped the big scary tigers on their backsides last Saturday. Well done to Tufuga Sa and Josh Ackerley in beating much higher ranked opponents in the Seniors first round.

Charlie Alexander re-lived the glory years with a very good hard fought win. Joining these three chaps in the quarter-finals are Blair Franklin, Jordy Green, Robbie Bell, Owen Miller and Peter Walker.

Some great games look in store with young Josh having a crack at reigning champ Jordan. Sa will need to bring his A game again to match Robbie.

Blair and Owen will have a good slug fest, and Peter will have his hands full against the living legend, Charlie. Should be a great day.

In the Inters, Sean Strange cruised through the first round and now faces a much sterner game against Dylan Stoddart, Arkright and Tim Newton will be a cracker, Grant Smith and Chris Lovelock may well go extra holes, and the big hitting Chris Ralston will see if he can intimidate straight and sure Paul Greer.

Junior A sees Chris Robertson play Dave Hewitt, Bevan Rickerby against the inform Phil Kerr, Ryan Stoddart pitching his wits against a matchplay professional in Jeff Williamson, and the game of the round with two big hitting bucks locking horns when Matt Tait takes on Braydon Wood. Having played with them both recently, the course may need to be lengthened, and on a few holes widened! Junior B we have only two games with George Brown and Pat Turton waiting for the winners. Jamie Stone will need to be at his best against the ever steady Peter Bain, and Robert Pawsey will have great fun battling with the effervescent Wilson Hii. The first round of the plate has some great games and a stableford round is also being played for those not in the club champs. Get on down and have a go.

On Sunday we have the Aorangi pennants semis and finals taking place on our course with 96 players teeing off from multiple tees from 11.15am.

These games will take precedent over anybody else on the course. It really is a showpiece for our club and a great thumbs up from Aorangi about the presentation of our course, well done to Ben and his team. Get on down and watch some great games, even with no Ashburton teams in the matches, we still have local representation, with club members Jeff Hewitt and Owen Miller turning out for the Tinwald Holmes Cup team in the final.

Ashburton Photographic Society The first meeting in August saw members working on Depth of Field. Bill Cabout gave a great description about how this works. Depth of field is how to make your subject the focus and the rest of the image blurry.

For our field trip, Members participated in a Car Trial that had been designed by Gaylene Smith.

This challenge set members around town to various check points and photo points. Because the field trip also had the Margret Clifford Cup at stakes, Gaylene had also carefully worked in taking us past Margaret’s old house.

Just over 30 members, partners and children met at the MSA to celebrate the 85th Birthday of the Club. This is quite an achievement to reach and could not have been done without the support of current and past members.

Our last meeting of the month was to have the Results of Natural History. This is never my favourite time as I have to read out the titles of the Photographs. They have to be titled with the correct botanical name where possible and when I got to school Latin was not on the curriculum!

Tinwald Branch Red Cross On Tuesday September 4 the Tinwald Branch hosted members of the Foundation of the Blind held in the Tinwald Hall. Everyone was welcomed by Branch President Pat O’Brien and the afternoon began with Rose Stead and 14 musicians entertaining with songs and music. They sang familiar songs that had everyone singing or toe tapping or hand clapping. It was just the thing to warm us all up on such a cold and wet day that it was.

Cavendish Club Recently at Cavendish Club we had a very interesting and informative speaker when Karen Hall spoke to us about Hospice in Ashburton. Most of us thought a Hospice was where we spent our final days being looked after and being made very comfortable by extremely caring nurses. This is correct – but, we were then made to realise that was only a small part of a much larger picture.

There are so many groups now belonging to the Hospice movement that the care has extended far out into the community and helps so many more people who need assistance, but are not ready for ultimate care. Money is short and the opening of the Hospice Shop in Tancred Street is well worth a visit – or a place to add to their interesting array of goods for sale.

This was a very interesting talk which opened many people’s eyes. It gave us plenty to think about and admire the passion Karen has for her job. It is a wonderful cause. Karen was sincerely thanked.

Plains Ladies Friendship Club Val welcomed everyone to our birthday celebration on a chilly morning.

Our first speaker was Lois Ranson who spoke to us about the joys, challenges and absolute fun of bringing up a child with profound deafness. Their first child born 50 years ago grew up apparently normally but did not talk. He was tested by the Plunket Nurse and then referred to a specialist who told them that their son was profoundly deaf.

His advice — take him home and treat him as normal. He did prescribe hearing aids which in those days were very cumbersome and had to be worn in a harness which was worn like a vest.

Even though there were many challenges along the way their son was included in all the usual school activities and learning experiences including being the Christmas tree in a school play. The family moved to Timaru so their son could attend the deaf unit and they learnt a little sign language.

After two years the family moved back to Ashburton for Intermediate and College. As he became older the deafness became more isolating but sign language became invaluable. Sign language is one of the official languages of New Zealand and we can see evidence of this at gatherings etc where the commentary is signed for the deaf community.

Her son has had a great life, has married and has four children and seven grandchildren who are a great joy. Lois gave us some sign language sheets so we could learn to sign our names.

The raffles were won by May Sanford and Joyce Chambers.

Our main speaker for the day was Jenny Swan who told us with a lovely photographic presentation how she and her daughter, who wanted to do something significant for her 40th birthday, decided to go to The Royal Wedding. Both were ardent Royalists and they decided it would be great fun.

They had a great spot on the Long Walk and were thoroughly caught up in the magic and excitement of the occasion.

Run and Walk Ashburton Two groups met on Tuesday evening catering to different needs. A small group of four turned out for sprints of a 400m circuit, racing and improving themselves against their own watch, whilst the other group of five were running at the lac-

The Early Birds on Saturday had a group of nine; one walker, two hybrids and six runners. It was just 2 degrees at 7.30am but this didn’t deter those who attended. Congratulations to runner Nicole Jackson who won a Karaoke competition, her prize being free entry into the Kepler Challenge in December! A great performance.

Club Road Championship took place on Saturday afternoon. It was a lovely sunny day with a light breeze, excellent conditions for those competing.

Our venue, the Ashburton Industrial Park starting from Ashford Avenue. A 2km circuit was set which takes in the walkway making for a safe course for walkers and runners alike, also great for our spectators to offer support as they complete each round. Walkers, female and 65+ runners complete 6km and male runners 8km. The walkers had a great turnout of 17 competing, whilst there were eight runners. Numbers were down a little due to sickness. A big shout out to our time keepers and marshal, Gordon Clinton, Johnny McGrath and Debra Curtain.

U3A Hakatere Ashburton About 80 U3A members and visitors had a most interesting talk given to them by Nicola Atwool, who is an Associate Professor in Social Work at the University of Otago. She has had 40 years’ experience as a practitioner, educator and advocate in social work, and was in the Office of the Children’s Commissioner for six years from 2006 to 2012.

Nicola has worked in child psychotherapy and has a long-standing interest in advocacy for children and young people. Her talk was titled The State of the Nation’s Children – What makes a difference?

We learnt that 1 in 4 children live with material hardship with 27 per cent in a poverty environment, and 3 out of 5 stay in a life with persistent poverty, creating the effects of poor nutrition, housing and health, generating poor educational and financial outcomes. It was sobering to see 160,000 notifications in 2017 to CYF, now called Oranga Tamariki, and almost 40,000 needing intervention. Nicola outlined the consequences and negative impacts on their lives.

On the positive side she discussed how strong role models, good schooling and community support targeting whole families can and do make a difference. Government policies over the last 10 years, especially emphasising both parents needing to work have actually increased poverty levels and she advocates a change to a system where more mothers can stay at home until children reach school age, as happens successfully in some places overseas. Every good idea, however, requires considerable resources.

Nicola’s talk opened up our eyes and minds to the significant social issues confronting our society in the way it is bringing up children in New Zealand.

We felt both informed but concerned about how to make the improvements needed.

Next month’s speaker on September 25 is Dr Ruth Savage, who is undertaking research into adverse drug reaction monitoring (pharmacovigilance).

Pitching for a travelling team

Mid Canterbury Softball is trying to get a team together to play in Christchurch’s under-18 softball competition this season.

A meeting had been held and while there was some interest, they didn’t quite have enough committed players to make the dream a reality at this stage, Mid Canterbury Softball vice-president Ritchie Johnstone said.

The original cut-off date for entries was earlier this week but it had been extended and it was hoped that in the coming days a few more players would come out of the woodwork to allow Mid Canterbury to be represented, Johnstone said.

“We’ve got 11 players committed at the moment, but realistically we need 14 or 15,” he said.

It has been four or five years since Mid Canterbury last sent a team to Christchurch and that was an under-19 side.

Johnstone said the current group of players was keen, but before making a final decision on whether to send a team to Christchurch there were other factors to consider too, like ensuring it wouldn’t have a detrimental effect on the local competition.

It was yet to be determined whether the Christchurch under-18 competition would be played on a Monday night or a Saturday and if it was a Saturday,

Heraf’s bizarre claims Controversial Football Ferns’ coach Andreas Heraf has made claims on Austrian television that New Zealand media compared him to Adolf Hitler. Heraf resigned as Technical Director and Football Ferns coach in July following an investigation into the Football Ferns environment and culture.

“From the beginning, you have felt this resistance to foreigners throughout the country. I have to say that very clearly,” Heraf told Sky Sport Austria. “I can prove it and that was the reason why I left the country. The newspapers that massively attacked me compared me to Adolf Hitler, the Austrian dictator. These are things that go too far,” he said.

Juniors work on form in nets

With the cricket season just around the corner, many of Mid Canterbury’s promising future stars have headed back to the nets.

Mid Canterbury Cricket began its winter coaching programme on Monday at the indoor nets at the Ashburton Domain, with around 30 youngsters making the most of the opportunity to begin refining their skills ahead of the 2018-19 cricket season.

Mid Canterbury Cricket development officer Mark Reid said the winter coaching ran for six weeks and involved four onehour sessions per group each week. It was aimed at juniors from around eight years up and youth players from around under-13 through to under-18.

Reid said numbers were slightly down for the winter coaching this year, possibly due to the Ashburton College first XI having a pre-season tour of Australia coming up, which they were already training separately for.

But they had a few girls signed up for the coaching this season, which was great as there were hopes that the Ashburton College girls’ first XI could be resurrected in the future, Reid said.

The college boys are due to start their competition – alongside schools from around Christchurch – on October 13, but they have the bye in round

Kiwis-Tonga rematch A World Cup re-match between the Kiwis and Tonga will go ahead in New Zealand next year, with the controversial Denver test all but dead and buried. The New Zealand Rugby League and NRL confirmed Mate Ma’a will play Australia at Mt Smart Stadium on October 20, while the Kiwis will host the Pacific Island side next June with the venue and date still to be confirmed. The Kangaroos-Tonga test will be played a week after the Kiwis also host Australia at Mt Smart in the end of year transTasman fixture on October 13.

Next year’s Kiwis-Tonga match will replace the Denver test between the Kiwis and England during the midseason stand-alone representative weekend. - NZME

Netballers pushed hard for top 8 finish

A top eight finish was on the minds of Ashburton College’s netballers on day three of the South Island Secondary Schools’ Netball Championships in Dunedin yesterday.

They knew they’d be up against it though, needing to beat Christchurch’s Villa Maria to do that, and they were right. Villa won the match 49-26.

But College A coach Kaye Kennedy said she was happy with her team’s performances so far, having achieved a goal set at the start of the season of making the top 16 in the South Island.

On day two, Ashburton College secured themselves that top 16 finish and second place in their pool despite starting the day with a loss to Nelson Girls’ College, and played Rangiora High School in their first cross-pool game.

They’d taken on Rangiora twice this season already and lost both times and they were unable to turn the tables, going down 4025 despite putting them under a lot of pressure in the second half and only narrowly losing the third and fourth quarters.

Yesterday afternoon they took on Blue Mountain and lost 38-32.

Also in Invercargill, the Ashburton College girls’ first XI hockey team has had a tough week, with their latest result being a 2-0 loss to Epsom Girls, at the Audrey Timlin Memorial tournament.

In Queenstown at the Rural Livestock Junior Rugby tournament, Ashburton College lost another nail-biter, going down to Timaru’s Roncalli in the final play of the game 22-21. That left them with a good win and three narrow losses from the first two days of competition.

Meanwhile in Ashburton, the Schick Southern Cup basketball tournament – featuring the Ashburton College senior boys’ team – gets under way at the EA Networks Centre today.

At the Ashburton hockey turf by late yesterday, St Cuthbert’s College and St Margaret’s College continued to be the teams to beat at the Chris Arthur tournament for second XI girls’ hockey teams.

Anthony Mundine could be slugged with more than $1 million in fines if he fails to make weight for his mooted showdown with Jeff Horn. The fight, Horn’s first since losing his world title to Terence Crawford, is all but locked in for November 30 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane and is expected to be officially confirmed in the coming days. A verbal agreement has finally been reached between the two camps over the weight limit with heavy financial penalties to be imposed if Mundine balloons out on fight night. After weeks of negotiations, a catchweight of 71kg has been settled upon.

Wallabies to atone Drew Mitchell says its up to Australia’s players, not the coach, to prove themselves after admitting they weren’t up to the task in back-to-back Bledisloe Cup losses. The former Wallabies winger described critics of Michael Cheika as short-sighted, backing the coach to lead the side to next year’s World Cup. He said Saturday’s clash with South Africa in Brisbane would be a chance to atone following players’ comments this week that their attitude and application had been lacking against the All Blacks.

AIS still relevant?

The AIS will still play a vital role in Australian sport even after the Canberra campus is redeveloped, according to director Peter Conde.

A business case for the redevelopment of the ageing facility is expected to be presented to the federal government later this month. While marathon legend and former AIS director Robert de Castella has concerns about the new era for the sporting body, Conde insists there is no reason to panic about the future of the campus. Gymnastics and basketball are two sports considering moving their bases away from the capital.

Pitman holds strong hand Iffraaj mare Elfee is heading into Saturday’s Christchurch Casino Open Handicap (1600m) at Riccarton in good form, having run in the money on all but one occasion this preparation.

Her trainer Michael Pitman, who prepares the seven-yearold mare with son Matthew, said punters can discount that run in the Gr.3 Winter Cup (1600m) two starts back where she finished tenth, and believes his mare is a solid chance in Saturday’s feature.

“In the Winter Cup, the track bias fully favoured those horses racing on the speed,” Pitman said. “She went a really good race in the Winter Cup considering and she closed quite well in the last 100m.

“She got beaten by two really good horses at her last start (Dez and Platinum Command) in the Winter Classic and it looks a nice

race for her. With Nashville in the race it sort of pushes the weights down for her.”

The Oamaru Cup (1600m) winner will carry 57.5kg with Chris Johnson aboard and has drawn barrier five in the six horse field, which poses no concern for Pitman.

“Her barrier won’t bother her, Chris (Johnson, jockey) will find a slot somewhere. She’s better off just sitting back a fraction anyway.”

Elfee ran second in the Gr.3 South Island Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) earlier this year and Pitman is hoping she can go one better in October where she is set to start in the Listed Christchurch Casino Spring Classic (2000m) at Riccarton.

Loved mother and mother-inlaw of Christine and Graham, Doug and Misao, Marilyn and Mark, Yvette and Grant, Lloyd and Miya; and loved stepmother of Peter, the late Keith, Susan, Wayne, and Nigel. Loved Gran and Grandma to her 17 grandchildren and loved Gran Gran to her 22 greatgrandchildren. In lieu of flowers donations to St John Ambulance would be appreciated and may be left in the Chapel Atrium. Villa Maria and St Matthew’s went head-to-head in a clash at the Chris Arthur Cup secondary schools’ hockey tournament in Ashburton yesterday, with Villa Maria coming out on top 3-0. Ashburton College doesn’t have a team on the turf at Ashburton, but their various sporting sides are at other tournaments around the South Island. See the full winter tournament report on page 17.

Breakers sign former NBA big man The New Zealand Breakers didn’t take long to lock in their new import.

After releasing centre Jerrelle Benimon due to family issues earlier this week, the Breakers have instead signed former Philadelphia 76ers big man Shawn Long on a one-year deal.

Long is of a similar – if not higher – calibre than Benimon, and will possibly even be a smoother fit for the Breakers, a side for whom rebounding could be a struggle this season.

The 6’9” Long should be able to help out there, having posted im-

pressive rebounding rates in most of his professional stops, and while he won’t have the passing touch promised by Benimon, he profiles as a more athletic option at the centre position.

Long can also spread the floor if required, being just enough of a threat to be respected from beyond the arc, and has the resume to potentially be the Breakers’ best player. (So did Rakeem Christmas though, so who the hell really knows).

Breakers coach Kevin Braswell is touting Long’s all-round ability as a key reason why he was signed.

“Shawn is someone who we saw early and thought damn, he is super talented. I know that he will help us on both sides of the ball – he is a great scorer and versatile on offence, and on defence he will alter shots and help us to throw different looks at teams. I know he is very excited to get to work and we are excited to have him.”

Long, who played 18 games for the 76ers in 2017 and has spent the last season playing in the NBA development league and top Chinese league, will join the Breakers this week.

“I had a number of options on

the table but after speaking to the Breakers I felt as though they’d provide the best situation for me to improve all around as a player, but most importantly a chance to win a championship,” Long said.

“I look forward to making the best of it and filling whatever role the team needs”.

The Breakers are currently preparing for the NBL Blitz next fortnight, before their pre-season game against the Phoenix Suns on October 3.

Their regular season tips off against the Brisbane Bullets on October 11.
