Many Ashburton schools are opting to bypass government attendance services and follow up unjustified school absences with faster and more personal methods. Despite Ministry of Education support in the form of an Ashburton attendance advisor, a number of principals say they would rather deal with problematic students themselves. Allenton School principal Graham Smith said the government system is slow and “clunky”. “I’ve given up on them,” he said. The system might work well in cities,
but it’s quite clunky in Mid Canterbury.” The attendance service is run by the Ministry of Education, who contract providers around the country. Safer Ashburton are in charge of delivering the service in the Mid Canterbury district, and employ an attendance advisor to work with students who are persistently not attending. However, the choice to work with the attendance service is optional, and Smith says too much paperwork and time is required. “We have to fill in forms and send in letters and proof that we’ve tried to manage the absence.” “It should be as simple as just sending
in the student’s [Ministry of Education] number and leaving them to access the information and get in touch.” However, the Ministry of Education said that in order to look at all the factors contributing to a student’s unjustifiable absence, and prevent them “coming back through the system time and time again,” sufficient engagement is required from both the attendance service and other agencies like the schools.
