Civic build back in council hands BY SUE NEWMAN

The future of Ashburton’s new civic centre and library could be heading into murky water, with no clear land deals done on the Baring Square sites tagged for construction. In June nine district councillors and Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel agreed the civic centre should be built on the first-choice site in Baring Square east. This required land deals to be struck with the Methodist Church and private landowner Paul May.
That September 30 deadline has passed and with nothing signed off, councillors will head back into whereto-now discussions on Tuesday. This meeting will be closed to the public. The original recommendation was that if the land needed had not been signed off by September 30, councillors would review all options for the project, including extending the purchase deadline. Council business support group manager Paul Brake yesterday confirmed that there was “paperwork to
consider” in relation to the land deals, but said whether or not that paperwork was ticked off would be in the hands of councillors. “The project control group will meet on Tuesday. They’ll review where we’re at and a recommendation will come to council. They will decide whether they want to proceed with this option or not,” he said.
