Last year’s community response to Toot for Tucker was the best ever, and organisers are hoping Ashburton residents will be just as generous this year. There will be a noisy onslaught of vehicles taking to the streets on the evening of November 19, picking up donations of nonperishable food items. “It gives us a real boost, especially with Christmas around the corner,” said St Vin-
cent de Paul president Mike Hanham. St Vinnies runs a foodbank for needy families, and supplies are always in danger of dipping to low levels. At the community foodbank, spokesperson Judith Lilley from the Salvation Army is facing a similar problem. “It’s really needing Toot for Tucker,” she said, adding supplies were getting “a bit low”. bank and St Vinnies, and has its own backup food cupboard for needy families. Family Start worker Jo Nicholas echoed Lilley’s and Hanham’s comments, saying the need was high, particularly leading into Christmas. The three services are grateful to organisers Ashburton County Lions and Property Brokers who are providing plastic Toot for Tucker bags which will be delivered with a community newspaper. More than 20 vehicles will hit the streets of
urban Ashburton, Tinwald, Hinds and Lake Hood, and in addition there will be community collections in Fairton and Chertsey. People can fill the bags with items and leave them out for Toot for Tucker volunteers to pick up when the event is held. Ashburton County Lions won a Trustpower community award this year and has been staging Toot for Tucker since 2000. The event has grown beyond all expectations and last year items collected filled more than 430 banana boxes.
