Church to benefit from private tractor collection opening

Vintage tractor enthusiast Richard Bateman is opening his private collection to the public on Sunday to help the Rakaia Anglican Parish raise funds for the restoration of its church.

The collection includes some real gems, such as a 1917 Overtime and a 1937 Ferguson Brown.

“It’s not a museum, it’s just my private collection, but we started opening it up to visitors a few years ago,” he said.

“I’ve just got a real passion for them.

“The first thing I do is get them back to running order, then I start working on painting and stuff.”

The church in need of restoration is the St Mark’s historic Mountfort church in Rakaia.

The church, constructed in 1877, suffered earthquake damage with a repair bill far greater than can be covered by the church’s current funds.

Work is required on the walls and windows, and a full rewiring of the church is also needed.

The collection will be open from 11am to 4pm, with an entry fee of $10 per person (children under 14 enter free) and food will be available for purchase.

Pipe upgrade to affect road users Negotiating Ashburton’s Walnut Avenue and State Highway One intersection next week will require extra care as work continues on the town’s wastewater pipe renewals project.

The Ashburton District Council is encouraging motorists to avoid the intersection where possible from Monday night as contractors dig under the road and through the intersection’s roundabout on the final leg of a project that has been under way since early March.

Highway traffic, contractors will work from 7pm until 6am from Monday with council operations and projects manager Viv Eyberg anticipating the work will be completed by Friday morning.

Once work is completed at the intersection it will continue a short distance up Walnut Avenue to enable the newly laid pipes to be connected to the existing network.

“We are about to begin one of the final legs of the project and would greatly appreciate the community’s continued support.”

Over the past few weeks work has been completed under the central town railway line. This involved driving a metal sleeve under the tracks to allow the waste water pipe to be laid without digging up the tracks.

Trustpower community awards to be announced

Winners of the Trustpower Ashburton District Community Awards will be announced on Monday night, with organisers saying they are thrilled with the high calibre of entries.

To be held at the Hotel Ashburton from 5.30pm, category winners will be presented, as well as the 2017 supreme winner.

The supreme winner organisation will take home $1500, a trophy and an all-expenses paid trip to the Trustpower National Community Awards, being held in Queenstown in April 2018.

Trustpower Community Relations Representative Abbie Siely said they had received about 30 per cent more entries this year

than the previous year.

“This includes quite a few groups who are newly formed or entering for the first time,” she said.

“The calibre of entries has been really high, and the judges have had a tough time choosing just one winner for each of the five categories.”

She said it would be a great evening for learning about – and celebrating – the work of volunteers in the district.

“We’re really delighted that Ashburton continues to produce such generous and enthusiastic volunteers, and that the community is getting in behind the Trustpower Community Awards programme to celebrate their efforts,” she said.

Need for teen support strategies

Finding ways to deal with social media and Facebook bullying will be a hot topic when Ashburton College holds a community meeting to discuss ways of supporting youth through their teenage years.

College councillors, senior staff and community agency representatives will be joined by a Ministry of Education representative for a meeting principal Ross Preece anticipates will provide solutions to problems many families of teenagers face.

While there will be speakers, the meeting will be focused on the issues people want answers to, he said.

“I want to start the meeting by asking people for some of the questions they want to have answered by the time the meeting ends.”

The disciplinary actions open to schools will be explained and senior staff will talk about the restorative practices used within school to deal with student problems, Preece said.

“I’ll also be talking about the legislation we’re bound by in the processes of suspension, exclusion or suspension.”

It became clear after a recent bullying incident at the college that many parents did not fully understand that those options were bound up in some pretty tight parameters, he said.

The college’s senior counsellor will talk about one of the most contentious topics the community was facing with teenagers – bullying on social media.

“The issue here is they can’t access Facebook at school, it’s blocked. They can if they use their own data, but most of this bullying is happening after school or at the weekend,” Preece said.

The results of that out of school activity, however, was spilling over onto the campus.

“One of the questions we’ll be asking is how much parents monitor their child’s Facebook posts.

We only have students for around six hours a day; their parents have them for the rest of the time.”

Preece anticipates the meeting will be a good forum for airing concerns and finding answers to help ensure young people were well supported as they moved through their teenage years.

The community meeting will be held in the Ashburton College Auditorium from 7pm – 8.30pm on Wednesday.

Human remains found next to cemetery Human remains have been found next to Ngati Whatua Orakei’s cemetery in Auckland by a council contractor.

Ngati Whatua representative Sharon Hawke could not be contacted, but told Stuff that council archaeological investigators estimated the remains predated the installation of Tamaki Drive in 1932.

The remains were found during repair work on Okahu Bay’s pump station. Work stopped immediately.

Hawke praised Auckland Council for contacting Ngati Whatua swiftly following the find.

After a site visit and archaeological assessments, it was established that the remains were historic.

Wheels Week events ready to roll

The Wheels Week Plus committee is all set for things to roll in to action this weekend.

Wheels Week Committee president Tony Dawson said they were excited to have some new events in the calendar, such as the mud plug and tractor display, plus the usual popular events, such as the swap meet.

“It all started when it was realised that all these motoring events were happening at roughly the same time, so they were put all under one umbrella and now we have something that attracts a lot of people to the region and something that has lots of community benefits,” he said.

The two weeks of activities kicked off last night with a motoring-themed quiz, held at the

Ashburton Fire Station.

Saturday will see a collection of stalls containing all things motoring at the Ashburton Vintage Car Club swap meet at 86 Maronan Road, which begins at 7.30am and will run through until 2.30pm.

Three New Zealand Speedway titles will be contested at the Ashburton Speedway adjacent to the Ashburton Airport on Seafield Road, starting at 12.30pm and running until 4pm.

The Plains Vintage Railway and Historical Museum will be open for viewing from 11am to 4pm, with vintage railcar rides operating.

The Devon Tavern will be hosting its Show and Shine Motorcycle Show from 11am to 4pm, with all makes and models free to be shown.

At the Americar’s clubrooms

on Maronan Road, the Americar Rod and Custom Club along with Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade will have all types of vehicles on display from hot rods to fire trucks.

On Sunday the Ashburton Plains Rotary Club will be hosting its 25th Classic Car Run, departing the Ashburton Showgrounds at 10.15am.

The Ashburton Car Club will be hosting a sealed motorkhana in the Spraymarks yard on Dobson Street, while the mud will be flying in Alford Forest at the Mid Canterbury 4X4 Mud Plug, which begins at 9am rain or shine.

A variety of models will be on display at Tinwald School between 10am and 3pm, while more than 100 vintage tractors will be on display at 440 Corbetts Road, beginning at 11am and finishing at 4pm.

Ducks beware – duck shooting season opens today

In a tradition that’s lasted longer than quarter of a decade, Shane Mcallister and Stu Isherwood will be up at the crack of dawn this morning like thousands of others around the country in the search of one thing, ducks.

The long-time friends have been duck shooting together for longer than they both care to remember and go to a lot of effort each year in preparation for opening day of the duck shooting season.

Plenty of man hours are put in in the lead-up to the event.

“It’s a bit of a tradition for us,” Mcallister said.

“There’s a lot of rubbish talked, but we have a lot of fun too.”

The pair this year have managed to secure the use of a new location to ply their trade, thanks to sheer luck.

They’ve set up shop on a farm near the Ashburton River which was previously owned by a relative of Isherwood’s and there was no debating whether or not to

claim the quiet setting when it became available.

“As soon as he was gone we swooped,” Isherwood said.

“It’s a bloody great wee spot.”

The pair will be joined this morning by Isherwood’s three sons and one of their cousins and while the introduction of the youngsters probably curbs some of the usual enthusiasm, it’s still a great occasion to enjoy with family.

“They boys are all right into it, they’ve got their own gear and are probably more excited about it than what we are to be honest.”

Hammering home the need for safety when shooting is one thing the boys the boys have heard a lot about.

The group was excited on Thursday night when they arrived to make the final touches to their maimai and lay decoys to see that there was already a good population of ducks on the pond.

“That’s encouraging, hopefully there will be a few more there by Saturday morning,” Isherwood said.

ADC to keep trying for road funding

The Ashburton District Council will continue applying to the NZ Transport Agency for extra funding for a project to upgrade Thompsons Track.

The council has clarified that while some councillors would like to see Thompsons Track reclassified as a state highway, there has never been a formal approach to the agency in this respect.

Roading manager Brian Fauth said the council made a request to NZTA for a project to upgrade Thompsons Track during its 2012-2025 long term plan review as a once-off project.

The project would have started at Rakaia and finished at Tramway Road.

This was declined by the agency and the council instead reverted to upgrading sections of the road.

Fauth said the council was aware that none of the district’s major roads would meet the criteria for a highway at this particular time.

“While we realise Thompsons Track does not meet the criteria to be classified as a state highway, council will continue applying to NZTA for extra funding for a project to upgrade the road,” he said.

Dairy awards D-Day

Data released by the council shows average daily traffic on Thompsons Track is 1259 vehicles per day, with heavy commercial vehicles 214 per day, according to measurements in 2016 near the Tramway Road intersection.

The figures represent a 20 and 166 per cent increase respectively since 2008.

NZTA says a road like Thompsons Track would need to have more than 3000 vehicles per day or 400 heavy commercial vehicles per day, to be considered for reclassification as a state highway.

Mid Canterbury 50:50 sharemilkers Christopher and Siobhan O’Malley, representing the Canterbury North Otago region, will contest the share farmer of the year title, while fellow Mid Cantabrian Ben Haley has his sights set on the dairy trainee award.

The O’Malleys milk 515 cows on Graham Brooker’s Thompsons Track farm and say their ultimate goal is to buy a dairy farm in the Murchison area. Both 34, the career-changing couple opted out of adventure tourism and teaching, respectively, to take up dairying eight years ago.

Twenty-four-year-old Haley, 24, farm assistant, works on John and Michelle O’Donnell’s 1100-cow farm at Eiffelton and is the Canterbury-North Otago Dairy Trainee of the Year. He is up against the top trainees from 10 other areas for the national title.

The trainee of the year finalists have just completed a three-day study tour during which they visited award-winning farmers, Fonterra headquarters in Auckland and the Tip Top factory.

Kerry Higgins, of Hororata, will represent the region in the dairy manger of the year contest.

In total 33 finalists representing 11 regions and will compete for prizes worth more than $190,000 and the honour of winning either the share farmer of the year, dairy manager of the year or the dairy trainee of the year title.

One of life’s quiet achievers John Kieran Turton September 8, 1950, to April 23, 2017

B

usinessman John Turton was one of life’s quiet achievers.

From humble beginnings in a small shed on Alford Forest Road John started a bus building business.

That was in 1985 and over the next 21 years the business, Designline, grew to become an international success story.

Over that time Designline grew from employing four staff to one that employed hundreds.

He broke new ground in bus design, not only becoming the supplier of choice for many national companies, but he also earned a reputation as the international expert on the development of electric buses.

Vehicles built by the Designline company made their way into the transportation networks of many countries.

John was like many school leavers of his generation, keen to leave school and learn a trade.

He was employed by Mid Canterbury Transport and took up

an engineering apprenticeship, following that up with a second apprenticeship as a mechanic.

While he had a secure future as an employee, John had a dream.

He saw a gap in the bus manufacturing industry and knew that was a business opportunity in-waiting.

With friend Lester Hobbs he decided to take the plunge, setting up a business they knew would take time to turn a dollar.

They dreamed, designed and took whatever work they could against the day their first order arrived.

The first Designline coach rolled out the door of their factory in April l986. It took four months to build; by the time John sold his business it took just 19 days to take a coach from a sheet of metal to roadworthy.

As the years ticked by Designline’s reputation grew, orders flowed in and staff numbers built. And as the business grew the company moved to larger premises and, again, to even larger premises.

Staff numbers continued to grow, moving to more than 150 with skilled employees brought in from overseas, many from

John Turton China and Romania who have now become New Zealand residents.

While John’s reputation was established on building high quality buses, it grew on his belief that electric hybrid buses were the way of the future. His development work was to take him around the world, including time spent at the US space research base Nasa.

With Designline’s reputation established as an industry leader,

it was inevitable it would attract the attention of overseas buyers.

In 2006 the company was sold to American interests, but John remained at the helm and his staff at the plant.

One year later he took up a position as senior executive vicepresident of Designline International, relocating for part of the year to a base in Charlottesville, North Carolina.

He continued to divide his time between Ashburton and Charlottesville for the next two years.

In 2009 John decided it was time to retire and that coincided with the company’s move from Ashburton to Rolleston’s Izone.

John might not have been an enthusiastic student, but he proved himself an accomplished athlete, holding the Ashburton College mile record for many years and achieving his Duke of Edinburgh Award and his Queen’s Scouting honour.

While his business became his life, John still found time to travel, play golf and to indulge his passion for trap and skeet shooting.

He won champion of champion awards in Ashburton, took

titles at regional and South Island championships as well as a bronze in the National Australian Skeet Shooting Championships.

His was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2008 for his contribution to business.

His employees described him as a firm but fair boss who enjoyed mentoring his staff to achieve their personal and professional goals.

They said he was an employer who was a true entrepreneur and for whom nothing was impossible, no idea too big. There was always a way to make it happen.

To his friends he was a generous man and a fun friend, a man who achieved more by the time he hit 40 than many people did in a lifetime.

And to Bev, his wife of 43 years, John was a man who had a strong focus and commitment to whatever he did – his business, his friends and his marriage.

He embraced opportunities and made the best of every situation, including the years during which Alzheimer’s took over his life.

John Turton died on April 23, at the age of 66.

The Ashburton Youth Council (AYC) has teamed up with Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury (VMSC) to help get the word out, and students of all ages are urged to give volunteering a go. To celebrate our young people dedicating their time and service to the cause, the Guardian will run a profile each day highlighting their efforts.

Ben Wakelin’s contribution to the community has helped paved the way for his future career.

The 18-year-old has been volunteering for Ashburton Scouts since he started high school and has also helped to run the lighting and sound side of things at many school and community events.

Now he is working towards a career in lighting after his interest in it developed through volunteering.

“I have found that I love spending time looking for solutions to making events work well when lighting issues arise, and this has led me to the decision to make this a career,” he said.

“Working towards the community service section of my Queen Scout Award got me motivated and my parents have always en-

couraged me to be giving of my time.

“I really enjoy setting lighting plans and running them and love to make events special for people.”

With scouts, Ben has helped with the redevelopment of the grounds around the scout park and was recently awarded the Totara Award from Rotary.

He’s on the Staveley Camp committee as well, helping prepare for a large upcoming Scouts and Venturers’ event.

He also spends time helping elderly people with jobs around the home.

“I really enjoy working with other people – both my peers and older people,” he said.

“I love the fact that people are surprised by how well I can do the

job and how much difference I can make to their event.

“I have enjoyed seeing the scout park getting finished and trying to make it a great place for more scouts to enjoy – a chance to give back to scouts has been great.”

He said while volunteering makes you quite busy, he would definitely recommend it to other students because you’ll always be surprised what you can gain from it.

“I am hoping my interest and the knowledge I have gained will lead to a professional career in lighting, but at the same time I can imagine myself always volunteering in some form,” he said.

“It’s something that gives me enjoyment and scouts has been so amazing for me that I will always want to give back to them.”

Farming Mums NZ is teaming up with the Agri-Women’s Development Trust to deliver a Girls on Fire seminar at Lake Hood next week.

The event is designed to inspire confidence, encourage connections and to celebrate young women and their contribution to primary industry.

Farming Mums NZ (FMNZ) facilitator Chanelle O’Sullivan said the fully-funded and catered seminar will feature a team of industry experts, including Lindy Nelson MNZM, who received her Order of Merit this year for services to women and agriculture.

O’Sullivan and KPMG’s Julia Jones will also speak at the event.

“The trust wanted to do something with us and our members specifically requested the three Cs theme – confidence, how do we get it? Connections – how do we get involved in our communities and contribution – how do we utilise our individual skills to support our communities,” O’Sullivan said.

The inaugural event will coincide with FMNZ’s fourth birthday and plans are afoot to celebrate with a bubbles and a cake later in the afternoon.

Girls on Fire will be held at the Lake House restaurant at Lake Hood on Friday, May 12, from 9am to 3pm and is open to 60 women.

A similar event will be held at Woodside Estate in Hamilton the following week (May 19).

Whyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mid Canty having Mid Canterbury has been invaded by fungi ranging from super-sized to miniature this autumn and residents have captured some amazing specimens with their cameras. Susan Sandys takes a looks at the science behind the explosion.

S

udden wet weather after a dry period is the cause behind an explosion of mushrooms and toadstools in Mid Canterbury this autumn.

Residents have been out with their cameras and have captured a wide range of specimens ranging from a huge horse mushroom to

delicate ink caps.

One species, orange pore fungus, captured in Geraldine may even be a newcomer, with experts saying it is rarely spotted south of Christchurch.

Landcare Research fungi taxonomy expert Peter Johnston has provided information on the fungi

flourishing in the district, based on the photos.

He said a wide variety of species were generally always there if one looked, but people were noticing them moreso this autumn due to what was likely a higher concentration after a burst of wet weather.

FLY AGARIC Fly agaric along the entrance to Mt Harding Racecourse Methven, an exotic fungus found on soil under oaks, pines and other trees. It is an ectomycorrhizal fungus meaning it lives in symbiotic association with the roots of trees, helping the tree to obtain nutrients from the soil. This species has become naturalised in native beech forests, much like a weed, and perhaps displacing the native mushrooms naturally found in these forests.

This small cluster of mushrooms was in the rhododendron area near the oval pavilion of the Ashburton Domain. It is unidentifiable from the photo due to being over mature.

HORSE MUSHROOM This monster mushroom on Pannetts Road may be a horse mushroom. Horse mushrooms are among many species in the agaricus genus, the same genus as the field mushroom. Some agaricus are good to eat, but some can make people sick, especially those species where the flesh inside the stalk turns yellow when bruised by rubbing with the fingers. Gills when mature are always very dark.

There are other mushrooms that can look similar but with white gills; these are likely to be poisonous, sometimes deadly.

a fungi invasion? in New Zealand still did not have names. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are thousands and thousands of species in native forests that are undescribed, and probably always will be,â&#x20AC;? Johnston said.

Some were undiscovered species but even many known samples had not been formally named, due to

few people having worked in the area in New Zealand.

Much of the fungi out in the forest had not been studied scientifically, and therefore had not been formally described.

He said the best resource for identifying mushrooms in New Zealand was NatureWatch, ac-

cessed by following a link from funnz.org.nz.

Canterbury professional forager Peter Langlands, who runs the national wild foods database, said this autumn had been one of the best mushroom foraging seasons on record.

The birch bolete, which grew off

silver birch tree roots, had been bountiful for the first time.

There were about 15 different varieties of mushroom which people could cook and eat within the Canterbury area, ranging from giant puffballs to the relatively common field mushrooms.

However, it was important people

knew what they were looking for, because some fungi were deadly.

The most common toadstool in New Zealand, the fly agaric, was mildly toxic, but at the same time a good indicator species, showing soil conditions were right for the growth of other species, and therefore for foraging.

INK CAP FUNGI An ink cap fungi on Main Street Methven. Ink caps are very delicate and last only a few hours before the caps break down to a slimy black mass of spores. They are found all over the world and are probably exotic in New Zealand.

Place a coriander sprig in the centre, top with about 2T of chopped chicken and a teaspoon of Asian pesto. Fold up the sides of the wrapper to form a square. Place on a piece of baking paper, seam side down. Repeat with remaining rice paper wrappers and filling.

■ Heat about 1cm of oil in a frying

pan over medium heat. Cook the parcels in batches for about three to four minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and cooked through.

Drain on paper towels and serve immediately with the dipping sauce.

■ Dipping sauce: Combine all ingredients.

Delhi pull off great win Delhi Daredevils pulled off the second highest successful run chase in Indian Premier League history when they overhauled Gujarat Lions’ 208 with 15 balls to spare on Thursday.

Rishabh Pant, with 97 off 43 balls, and opener Sanju Samson, with 61 off 31, combined for a staggering 143 runs in less than 11 overs for the second wicket. “You can’t have a plan when chasing that much,” Delhi captain Karun Nair said.

“We spoke about having to play with freedom. I’m glad we’re going out there and executing it.”

Pant and Samson hit 16, 24, 16 and 12 off overs 10-13 as Delhi zoomed from 97-1 to 165-1.

Pant was particularly destructive, hitting nine sixes, starting with the second ball he faced.

He hit James Faulkner for three sixes in the 11th over.

He was out, with victory well in sight, when he edged Basil Thampi behind in the 15th over, to a collective groan from the home crowd.

Delhi finished on 214-3 after Gujarat posted 208-7 with Suresh Raina run out

by Kagiso Rabada for 77 off 43, and Dinesh Karthik dismissed for 65 off 34, including five sixes.

Karthik’s lofted shot off Pat Cummins was brilliantly plucked high and one-

handed by Corey Anderson.

Anderson also had the final say in the match, smashing Faulkner for six over long-on.

Delhi remained at sixth place but still in contention for the top-four play-offs.

Gujarat’s play-off hopes have all but died.

Last-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore were due to play fifth-placed Kings XI Punjab in Bangalore.

Celtic overcome fancied Lincoln Celtic are quickly becoming title contenders for this year’s premier netball competition after beating the high flying Lincoln University team on Thursday night at the EA Networks Centre.

It was close throughout the game and was even at both quarter time and half time. A strong third quarter had Celtic up by three points, a lead which they protected to win 42-39 over their much fancied rivals.

They now sit in a three-way tie at the top of the table in the six week inter-centre competition.

Coach Ange Leadley said the team scored off their turnovers and kept their composure for the whole game.

“Their heads stayed in the game for the full 60 minutes and they worked really well as a unit.

We made a number of changes by running our full bench and we just never let them get too far ahead of us,” she said.

Up against Southern next week, it will be a good chance to see how they stacked up against another local team, Leadley said.

Ashburton College also scored a win in the local derby of the round, eventually triumphing over Methven who continued to battle throughout the game.

A strong final quarter from the secondary schoolgirls clinched the 44-35 victory, after Methven fought back from a poor first quarter to be within 2 goals at three-quarter time.

For United, it was a case of their own mistakes costing them in their game against Saints.

Despite a close start, it was a combination of unforced errors and some pin-point shooting from their competitors which saw them eventually go down 49-31.

Coach Anne Gilbert said it wasn’t the strongest game they’ve had but there were still positives to take from the game.

just not as consistent as we needed. We have a number of new players this year and we’re still trying to find the best combinations, particularly in the shooting circle.

“We’re learning our strengths and are starting to gel as a team.

It’s a great bunch of girls to work with so we will continue to build on the positives each week,” she said.

They face their first local derby

next week when they take on Ashburton College.

Hampstead had a tough game against defending Christchurch premier champs Kereru, who notched up over 70 goals for the second week in a row.

The game featured sharp shooting from both teams and while Hampstead continued to fight hard, they eventually went down 76-24.

Halfway through the first round, Celtic are still the only local team to have beaten a competitor outside of Mid Canterbury, after they also won over Kaiapoi last week.

It was Southern’s turn to take on Kaiapoi in the away game but the North Canterbury team had regrouped after their loss last week and put in a stronger performance to win 49-42.

All teams are back in Ashburton

next week with the two local derbies, while Hampstead will face Halswall and Methven will come up against St Nicholas.

In Premier 2, Rakaia continued their good form after a win over Ashburton College B 30-22 and Hampstead B also had a strong win over Celtic C 43-31. It was a close battle between Allenton A and Celtic B, with Celtic clinching it in the last few minutes 32-30.

Gatland teases All Blacks as injuries mount Lions head coach Warren Gatland twisted a knife in fresh Kiwi wounds by suggesting that there will be growing ‘concern’ in New Zealand about the All Blacks’ mounting injury problems.

With just 25 days to go until the British and Irish squad depart for their 10-match tour, their own casualties are recovering well, just as Steve Hansen’s world champions are being struck down by a series of medical setbacks.

New Zealand captain Kieran Read is out of action with a broken thumb and veteran flanker Jerome Kaino has had knee surgery, while outstanding hooker Dane Coles and full-back Ben Smith are struggling with concussion.

Warren Gatland These are all key men for the All Blacks and Gatland can sense the magnitude of the situation – especially as Coles had already been sidelined since March 18 with an unrelated leg injury.

“They (Read and Coles injuries) are quite significant I think, Ben Smith as well,” he told Sky Sports News.

“With Kieran Read, they are saying he’s going to be back in time but he won’t have had a lot of rugby under his belt potentially before the first Test. Coles seems to have quite a niggling injury that’s been going on for a while. It’s one of those injuries that is hard to get confidence from and you have to be careful about not coming back too early, so that will be a bit of a concern for them.”

In contrast, the out-look for the Lions is improving, with positive bulletins on a trio of likely Test starters, led by the captain, Sam Warburton, who damaged knee

ligaments last month.

“He’s good,” said Gatland. “I spoke to Sam yesterday and he feels he could play now. He’s made some really good progress and is really happy with how he’s responded to treatment. I expect him to play before he goes to New Zealand.

“Alun Wyn Jones (shoulder) is making good progress as well.

He’s confident that he’s going to be okay as well. It looks like the Ospreys are going to be involved in the semi-finals of the Pro12 and that would give him an opportunity to get some rugby under his belt.

“The prognosis with Conor Murray (shoulder) looks positive in terms of hopefully getting a game for Munster (before the

tour). It’ll be good for him over the next few weeks if he can get a game.”

In addition to these up-beat updates, Northampton are understood to be confident that England lock Courtney Lawes will have recovered from a head injury sustained at Exeter last weekend, in time to feature against Harlequins at Franklin’s Gardens on Sunday NZT. Wasps wing Christian Wade has been nominated for the RPA’s Players’ Player of the Year award, despite remaining out of favour with England. The prolific tryscorer is joined on the shortlist by club-mates Elliot Daly and Jimmy Gopperth, along with Owen Farrell and Louis Picamoles.

Weather tests runners Mount Hutt College students took to the roads this week for the annual Cross Country Championships.

With the weather consisting of rain and wind, the championships were run in true cross

country style and participation was excellent across the categories.

The most competitive race of the day came in the Year 9 Boys Championship in which just three seconds split first, second

and third with Charles Brown taking the honours.

Brea Roderick and George Seque produced the most dominant efforts of the day winning their titles by more than two minutes.

Team NZ still awaiting equipment Team New Zealand are still waiting on a key piece of equipment, on which their America’s Cup hopes may hinge, to arrive in Bermuda.

Just three weeks out from the opening race of the America’s Cup qualifiers, the Kiwi team are sweating on the arrival of their final set of race daggerboards.

With many components of the America’s Cup Class race boats being one-design, the daggerboards – or foils – that lift the boats out of the water are a critical design differentiator between the teams.

As the daggerboards have a major impact on the performance of the boats and a significant chunk of the design and engineering effort for this America’s Cup has gone into this area.

Since hitting the water in Bermuda for the first time two weeks ago, Emirates Team New Zealand has been testing several new pieces of hardware on their boat, but they are yet to unveil the final key piece of the puzzle – their second set of daggerboards.

“We’ve still got plenty of new stuff coming, we’re slowly getting bits and pieces arriving from NZ and I think once we get those daggerboards it will put us in a lot better position than we are right now and that’s something that really excites us,” said Burling.

“We’ve had a lot of new gear online over this period and I think how quickly we’ve been able to

adapt is really a credit to the base we laid in NZ, getting a lot of our systems going so when we came up [to Bermuda] we could develop really quickly.”

Burling said Team NZ aren’t alone in leaving the launch of key design elements to the last minute. Several other teams are also making tweaks to their boats with the development race set to go right down to the wire before racing begins on May 27.

In brief Nanai in doubt Auckland schoolboy sensation Etene Nanai may not be rugby league and Warriors-bound after all. On Wednesday, it was revealed that the Warriors had the 17-yearold St Kentigern outside back contracted until the end of 2019.

But though he trained with the Warriors in the off-season, his heart is with rugby and that strong interest shown from the Chiefs and New Zealand sevens powerbrokers is causing a rethink on his future.

Further muddying the waters for the Warriors is that any contract signed by a minor (anybody under 18), as per the Minors’ Contract Act, is legally unenforceable.

McLaughlin improving

Anton Lienert-Brown will be hoping Charlie Ngatai’s return will be the catalyst he needs to lift his game to previous heights.

Lienert-Brown hopes to spark With all the attention on one Chiefs midfielder today, the other will be hoping his season can also kick into gear.

Charlie Ngatai has understandably hogged the headlines as he returns from a year-long absence to face the Reds in New Plymouth but, of all the benefits he will add to the Chiefs, perhaps his partner has the most to gain.

Anton Lienert-Brown has so far been a solid if unspectacular member of his side’s backline, playing in a succession of different midfield combinations while failing to attain the heights of his breakthrough campaign.

Last year saw Lienert-Brown

and Ngatai link well for the Chiefs before the latter was struck down by concussion. And, in many ways, Lienert-Brown was a beneficiary of his teammate’s misfortune, making the most of a spate of midfield injuries to earn an All Black call-up.

Once on the international stage, Lienert-Brown out-performed expectations and retained his place for the end-of-season tour. But, currently the incumbent, his quiet form has left him a questionable starter for the Lions tour.

In 643 minutes for the Chiefs this season, the 22-year-old has recorded two try assists and 10 offloads, the same numbers he

managed in less than half the playing time on All Blacks duty last year.

According to coach Dave Rennie, he has been a victim of the Chiefs’ attacking struggles as a unit. And tonight, with what Rennie described as “as good a backline as we can put on the park”, would be a good time for LienertBrown to rediscover his spark.

“I think, attack-wise, he’s battled because our attack has battled,” Rennie said. “He’s still going pretty well but, like a few others, I know he’s keen to get a bit more ball in his hands.”

But the limited ball LienertBrown has enjoyed tells only part

of the story. Of the 24 midfielders in Super Rugby who have made at least 50 carries this season, just two players have a worse average gain than Lienert-Brown’s 3.39 metres.

There is another side to his game, however. Of the 21 midfielders have attempted at least 50 tackles, only four have a better success rate than Lienert-Brown’s 86 per cent.

“His defensive game’s been really strong, and we know he’s got a huge defensive workrate and is a very good tackler,” Rennie said.

“He’s part of our defensive group, so he delivers a lot of stuff there.”

Kiwis star arrested for drug possession Sydney Roosters and Kiwis NRL star Shaun Kenny-Dowall has been charged with drug possession after he was allegedly caught with just under half a gram of cocaine at a Sydney nightclub.

Police said a 29-year-old man was searched at the Ivy nightclub on George St about 1am yesterday and officers allegedly found 0.46g of the drug in a small resealable bag.

“The man was issued with field court attendance notice for possessing prohibited drugs and he’s expected to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on June 21,” a police spokeswoman said.

The Kiwi national was last year acquitted of domestic violence after he was accused of headbutting, pushing and putting his

former girlfriend Jessica Peris in a headlock. A magistrate found Peris, the daughter of former senator Nova Peris, was an unreliable witness.

The 29-year-old Kenny-Dowall always maintained his innocence and said he was a stronger person for having been through the ordeal.

“You don’t know how good you’ve got it until it’s that close to being taken away from you,” he said at the time.

After the acquittal, Roosters coach Trent Robinson said KennyDowall was in “a better place” than the previous year and needed his rugby league routine to continue.

“He just wants to play footy and he wants to get back to things the way they were before,” Robinson said.

Kiwi Supercars driver Scott McLaughlin is hoping to take full advantage of his Ford’s undoubted speed at this weekend’s Supercars round at Barbagallo Raceway north of Perth. McLaughlin and Kiwi teammate Fabian Coulthard appear to have the fastest cars in the field at present but didn’t maxmimise that edge at Phillip Island a fortnight ago. The 23-yearold lies fifth in the standings at the moment while Coulthard holds a narrow seven-point lead atop the leaderboard. “We’ve got a really good package under us and we are starting to understand it a lot more,” McLaughlin said.

Strong start by Todd Four times champion Sir Mark Todd has made a strong start to the Badminton Horse Trials in England. Joseph Parker’s new bespoke ring gear featuring python skin and clear crystals has arrived in the nick of time for his fight against Razvan Cojano tonight. The robe and shorts, which cost nearly $10,000, were being held at New Zealand Customs since last week after arriving from the United Kingdom, but have been released on the payment of a customs duty.

“It cost some good money, I’m not sure how much it cost but it cost quite a bit,” Parker said.

Prom Queen lined up for Guineas Dashing juvenile filly Prom Queen (right) has made her mark at Riccarton this season and her connections are keen on a Group One return to the South Island’s principal track next term.

She is unbeaten in four appearances on the Christchurch course, including the Listed Welcome Stakes, and co-trainer Kenny Rae sees no reason why she won’t cope with a mile as a three-yearold in the New Zealand 1000 Guineas.

“She’s got a lot of improvement in her and I’ve said all along the Guineas will be the target for her,” said Rae, who prepares the youngster with his wife Lisa and their daughter Krystal Williams.

“We never have to slow her down in her work and she goes along at whatever speed you want.

titude – she doesn’t care about anything.” Prom Queen’s first preparation is almost certain to conclude with an appearance in Saturday’s Listed Berkley Stud Champagne Stakes, again at Riccarton.

“I’ll probably give her a spell after that – people have said go to Australia and if she won very impressively we may think about that, but I don’t want to be greedy,” Rae said.

Beaten only once in five starts, the daughter of Super Easy gave her rivals a thumping at her most recent start.

“She may have only beaten small fields, but it takes a good horse to win by nine and a half lengths – I was speechless after that,” Rae said.

“She’s really smart and I don’t know how good she really is yet. She’s only 14 hands, she’s a midget and there’s still improvement to come.”

Obamacare ‘is dead’ President Donald Trump has declared Obamacare “dead” after the Republican healthcare bill was narrowly passed by the lower chamber of Congress.

The 217-213 vote marked his first legislative victory and goes some way to keeping a key campaign promise to roll back his predecessor’s law.

Democrats say the American Health Care Act will leave millions uninsured.

The bill now heads to the Senate, where Republicans have indicated they will cast it aside and write a new law.

Protesters shouted “Shame on you!” as lawmakers left Capitol Hill after the knifeedge vote.

But there were celebrations moments later on the White House lawn, where the president laid on a reception for Republicans in the House of Representatives.

Six weeks ago, their healthcare attempts appeared doomed when they did not have enough support to have a vote.

But that bill has undergone several revisions to satisfy both the conservative and moderate wings of the Republican party.

The Democrats think the effect of this bill would be

the opposite, stripping insurance from the poor, giving tax breaks to the wealthy and casting doubt on health provisions for the chronically sick.

“Thousands of Americans would die because they would no longer have access to care,” said Senator Bernie Sanders.

Groups representing hospitals and doctors have also

expressed concerns about the Republican plan, which they say has yet to be properly assessed.

The ill-fated Republican bill in March would result in 24 million more Americans losing insurance within a decade, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said at the time.

Prince Philip retiring from royal duties For decades, he has stood loyally at the side of Queen Elizabeth II and made thousands of solo appearances as well.

He calls himself the world’s most experienced unveiler of plaques.

He has been eligible for a government pension since June 10, 1986, yet still soldiered on.

Now, at age 95, Prince Philip says he is retiring from royal duties.

The queen’s husband said Thursday he will carry out scheduled engagements for the next few months but won’t take on new ones starting in the fall.

His retirement announcement followed a night of frenzied speculation caused by

Prince Philip news reports about an “emergency” palace meeting Thursday.

Buckingham Palace said Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, made the decision to retire with the full support of the queen.

Tall, craggy-faced and al-

ways elegantly dressed, Philip is as famous for his occasional off-color gaffes and one-liners as he is for his devotion to the monarch, and he joked about his retirement at an Order of Merit reception at St. James’s Palace.

“I’m sorry to hear you’re standing down,” said 88-yearold mathematician Michael Atiyah said, using the British expression for retirement.

“Well, I can’t stand up much longer,” Philip replied. He walked with his head held high, despite his self-deprecating claim.

Harvey Oyer, a Florida attorney who was invited to a Buckingham Palace lunch reception, told The Associated Press

that Philip looked remarkably well.

“The big takeaway is there was no indication that this was a farewell,” Oyer said. “He did not look unhealthy in any way.

He was as spry and humourous and engaging as he has always been.”

Philip has made earlier concessions to age, announcing when he turned 90 in 2011 that he was “winding down” his official duties. He said at the time that he felt he had “done my bit”.

Since then, he’s had some serious health issues, including a blocked heart artery, and has been hospitalised several tim es.

Playboy’s Hugh Hefner has been told he has just weeks to live as he struggles to battle cancer, according to reports.

The National Enquirer magazine claim the 91-year-old Playboy founder has only three weeks to live. It is understood Hefner has been hiding the news for some time as he allegedly battles the deadly disease. “Hef is deteriorating rapidly. He’s also stopped eating, which is a sure sign the end is near,” the magazine’s source alleged. Hefner didn’t show up to the last Playboy party, raising concerns over his health. It is not known what kind of cancer Hefner has.

Hawking: We must leave Earth in 100 years Humans must leave Earth within 100 years if we want to survive, Professor Stephen Hawking has warned.

The renowned theoretical physicist believes that life on Earth is at an ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as asteroid strikes, epidemics, over-population and climate change.

Adele’s personal fortune increased by £40 million ($NZ75 million) last year. The Hello hitmaker’s bank balance swelled by an eye-watering amount thanks to her global arena tour and additional sales of her 25 album, with her personal fortune going from £85 million ($NZ160 million ) to £125 million ($NZ235 million) over a 12-month period. As our world becomes less suitable for life over the next century, Professor Hawking will warn in a new documentary that future generations must forge a new existence in space, according to the Daily Mail.

As part of a new documentary, Expedition New Earth, which is part of BBC’s Tomorrow’s World starting in June,

Professor Hawking will travel around the world to find out how we might exist in outer space.

In the documentary, airing on BBC 2, he will claim that time is running out for human existence on Earth and we must carve our future elsewhere.

The season will also try to

find Britain’s best invention, by asking the public to vote on the innovation which has been the most influential in their lives.

In November last year, Professor Hawking was more conservative in his estimates.

He warned that humans could not survive another 1000 years on “fragile” Earth.

“It is easily the phone that’s pre-sold the most of any devices we’ve ever had and it’s three times any other Samsung device we’ve sold,” Paris said.

“There’s a real trend towards premium devices now so anytime a new premium device comes out from Apple or Samsung it’s bigger than the last,” he said.

“The quality of the devices are extraordinary now in terms of what you can do with them.”

Paris said he could not give specifics on how many devices had been sold, but said the company had guaranteed pre-sale customers would be the first to receive the devices before it went on sale to the public yesterday.

It had also allowed pre-orders through online, in store and its call centre, providing a greater opportunity for customers to prepurchase the device.

“There has also been a lot of hype around this device internationally – people are genuinely excited about what the device could do for them,” Paris said.

Samsung has also launched a number of additional products to pair with the Galaxy S8`s including new virtual reality gear and the Samsung DeX – allowing the phone to be used like a desktop computer.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ will feature larger 5.8 and 6.2-inch screens with a water-resistant body, improved selfie camera, and a smart assistant named Bixby that takes voice commands, although this isn’t fully functional in the phones yet.

Farmers hold back wool in weak market Less wool than forecast was offered at New Zealand’s weekly auction as farmers held back bales from sale in a weak market.

Just 6821 bales were put up for sale at yesterday’s South Island auction after 11 per cent of the expected bales were withdrawn before the sale started, according to AgriHQ. Even with the low number of bales on offer, the clearance rate fell 2 percentage points from last week’s auction to 73 per cent, lagging behind last year’s levels, AgriHQ said.

New Zealand is the world’s largest exporter of crossbred wool and weak demand for the fibre, which makes up about 80 per cent of the national clip, has weighed on prices this season. Wool export

volumes were down 20 per cent in the first quarter of this year, with exports to China down 34 per cent.

The Ministry for Primary Industries noted in its latest quarterly outlook that wool export prices may remain subdued until inventory is worked through and demand from China returns. That’s prompted some farmers to hold back bales from sale in anticipation prices may lift in the future.

The gap between North Island prices and South Island prices closed at this week’s sale. Normally a premium is achieved in the South Island. Compared to last week’s sale in the North Island crossbred wool remained steady with 35-micron wool remaining at $3.85 per kilogram and 37-micron

wool at $3.80/kg. Still, 30-micron lamb wool improved by 20 cents/ kg to $3.70/kg, AgriHQ said.

Compared to the last South Island sale two weeks ago, prices were fairly steady with 35-micron and 37-micron crossbred wool both up 5 cents/kg. Still, 35-micron crossbred wool remains 22 per cent below the same time last year. Lamb wool was unchanged compared to the last South Island sale, but a large fall occurred for 37-micron second-shear crossbred wool, which was down 20 cents/kg to $3.70/kg, AgriHQ said.

Some 5500 bales are expected to be offered at next week’s North Island sale, 11 per cent below the last sale in the North Island, AgriHQ said.

Samsung’s comeback device the Galaxy S8 and S8+ is officially on sale nationwide yesterday, with pre-sales exceeding any other phone sold in the country.

According to Samsung New Zealand, the hype around new smartphone devices was continuing to grow, with 62 per cent of the mobile market made up of devices worth more than $1000.

Samsung’s S8 and S8+ cost $1299 and $1499 respectively.

The latest model in its flagship S series passed first day pre-sales of the S7 model by almost 10 times.

“The pre-order demand for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ in New Zealand has surpassed all expectations,” head of mobile portfolio Todd Selwyn said.

“We have seen over 400 per cent year on year growth, which is our largest pre-order ever.”

The S8 model is the first from the company since its disastrous flammable Note 7 model which saw the company recall millions of devices, wiping billions off its market cap.

New Zealand’s best number crunchers have come up with four rules of thumb to help people stretch their savings out in retirement.

With people living longer there are growing concerns about how people will make their nest egg last until they die.

But the New Zealand Society of Actuaries has put forward a guidance plan to the government to assist Kiwis decide how much of their retirement savings to spend each year.

ews that an emergency meeting had been called at Buckingham Palace this week reverberated around the world at breakneck speed.

And speculation rode hard on its heels.

In no time flat hordes of reporters, photographers and camera operators had gathered at the palace gates waiting to pick over the details like vultures. Ironically, a group of vultures feeding on a carcass is known as “a wake”.

It didn’t take long for someone to join imaginary dots and pronounce Prince Philip dead.

British tabloid The Sun went so far as to post an online story – one prepared earlier – under the banner: Prince Philip dead at 95, despite assurances from palace aides that there was “no concern for alarm” about the Queen’s or the Duke of Edinburgh’s health.

French media outlets followed suit in announcing Prince Philip dead, as did an Australian news channel.

All were swiftly removed from websites. A Sun spokesperson said a reporter had been asked to update an obituary for Prince Philip – which was “accidently published” online.

Amy Adams ... where is the accountability from the minister responsible?

How to win by losing S

o, in this day of accountability, transparency, trickledown economics and other populist words thrown around by politicians comes this lesson in how to win by losing.

Now our third-term-lucky-toget-in-minority-vote government decided a while ago to have a policy called Better Public Services. Of course education was included and this is where reporting progress against national standards sits.

I’ve written before about the difficulty of making judgements against the standards, what would happen if schools have a decline in standards and how these standards are not attached to a national vision for education – which still does not exist 18 months after the latest education act review.

But nowhere have I ever said, let’s give up on the targets set by the standards. The target of 85 per cent of all students, every year meeting standards in maths, reading and writing is aspirational and has helped schools examine their practice and ask “how can we do better?”

If we don’t meet the targets, we are required to report on why

and what plans we have to try to meet it.

What we are not allowed to do is give up. We have had six years of standards and we have never been able to opt out or give up. It is a constant goal that has remained unwavering, not because we choose to, because the Government says this is a priority.

When we do make progress as a set of schools, our minister heralds the success of having these public targets and standards to try to achieve. There are even comments that go as far as saying – “National Standards lift achievement”.

So then comes this bombshell in the past week. The target to reduce reoffending by 25 per cent by 2017, has been dropped because of the minimal progress towards meeting it. It has been dropped by the Government

because they couldn’t make an impact.

The minister responsible is Amy Adams. If you search the state services website it will list why reducing is so important and the actions the ministry will take to meet this target. All of the actions will require taxpayer funding.

Nowhere can I find the minister responsible fronting up and taking responsibility. The Prime Minister has muttered a few words, but seriously, where is the accountability from the minister responsible? The only quotes are excuses and this gem – “Whether you measure it in a percentage or as a real number, I think sometimes a real number is actually more tangible to understand” – Amy Adams, May 3, 2017, newsroom.co.nz Of course! That’s it! We don’t understand percentages. We need real numbers, silly Kiwis.

Let’s talk in simple words because we just don’t get it because we haven’t got the brains of politicians.

so decided to drop the target altogether, what would you think of me if I didn’t take responsibility for it?

You wouldn’t say I was a good principal, you might pressure my board to say it was time I moved on and some of you might even move your children elsewhere.

As public servants we are under pressure to improve the outcomes of the public we are responsible for.

I’m fine with that, if it applies to all of us in the public service.

But it seriously stinks when a major policy of the Government is failing, no senior politician takes responsibility and in order to deal with the issue, the Government simply removes it altogether.

That is arrogant behaviour by a third term government hoping you will not remember how they intend to win, by losing targets they couldn’t obtain.
