Firearms were seized from duck hunters shooting without a licence at a Rangitata irrigation pond on the opening day of the duck hunting season on Saturday.

Rangers were out in force over the weekend, checking hunters were following the rules.

Central South Island Fish and Game officer Rhys Adams said the four hunters found without a licence were issued

offence notices. Two other hunters at a different Rangitata pond were also found illegally using lead shot. Others at a South Canterbury lagoon were in breach of decoy rules.

Adams said the number of breaches was disappointing and the hunters could face criminal prosecution.

A Mid South Canterbury police spokesperson said no incidences of illegal or irresponsible behaviour around gun use had been reported over the weekend around

Ashburton. Police had been pleased with the behaviour and manner of the hunters and there had been no issues.

Aside from the Wildlife Act rule-breakers, hunters were generally happy and enjoying opening weekend with their mates or family members, Adams said.

Many had gone to some effort to create maimais and there were also junior hunters at several locations.

Adams said there were plenty of ducks to be harvested.

Landowners’ input needed on CBD

Ashburton’s town centre land and building owners are being asked to crystal ball gaze and decide how they plan to develop their properties in the future.

It might be a tough call, but a bit of forethought today could save those landowners money in the future, Ashburton District Council senior planner Ian Hyde said.

With a major redevelopment of the town’s CBD on the drawing board, the council’s planning team are keen to involve town centre landowners in the redevelopment process, Hyde told councillors at Thursday’s service delivery meeting.

Work on the redevelopment would be under way by the end of the year, Hyde said, with the first stage seeing streets opened up as work began on underground services. And that was the stage where it was critical for private landowners to have input, he said.

“We’re hoping those private building owners can tell us any extra services they will need so we can do this as part of the town centre work. If that doesn’t happen we could end up with a situation where people may later want to dig up the newly laid road surface.”

Commitment still on to reopen information centre

Ashburton’s empty town centre information building faces an uncertain future.

It has been largely unused since the town’s i-SITE closed in spring 2017 and it’s owner, the Ashburton District Council, is no closer to deciding its fate today than it was 18 months ago.

For several months the council has been in discussions with a group of locals who wanted to use the building for a business that included providing information for locals and the travelling public. This deal has yet to be signed off.

Tony Todd, a spokesperson for the business group, said it was still their focus to get the information service up and running.

“We’re at a stage where we’ll shortly be looking for support from the community and it’s fair to say we’d love to have something up and running in the spring,” Todd said.

A new information base in the centre of town, however, could only have a short shelf life with an information centre included in the district’s new civic centre to be built in Baring Square east.

That doesn’t change the busi-

ness group’s plans, Todd said and he anticipates that once work on the new complex is under way his group would have discussions with the council about what would happen to the central town base in the future.

When the future of the town centre information building was discussed at Thursday’s council environmental services meeting Mayor Donna Favel cautioned councillors that they needed to make sure they understood how the building had been gifted to the community and the consents that were in place around its use.

“We want to make sure we don’t make any mis-steps on this,” she said.

At a recent town centre working group meeting, there was a suggestion the East Street building would look dated if it was retained and became part of the new townscape. That could see it moved off site.

Council chief executive Hamish Riach said he was still working through potential for the building to be utilised and it was correct that some commitment had been made in good faith, to a business group, but discussions were not concluded.

He confirmed that any use as

an information centre would only be until the new civic centre opened.

Council staff are working on a

report that will include options for the building and this is likely to be presented at the next council committee meeting.

The i-SITE building closure in 2018 was not without protest.

Swap meet kicks off Wheels Week

The Ashburton Vintage Car Club’s swap meet kicked off Wheels Week on Saturday with the annual sale of everything from car parts to Matchbox toys attracting almost 350 stallholders and thousands of visitors.

The swap meet started more than 40 years ago as a low-key way for car enthusiasts to network, sell and buy car parts for their restoration projects and it has grown to become a key event on the motoring calendar and the perfect start to Wheels Week.

A host of wheels-related activities and events will take place between the weekend and May 19, including the Ashburton Car Club’s annual street sprints held on a short circuit within the Riverside Industrial Estate.

Swap meet bookings officer Karen Bell said several stallholders were already waiting at the vintage car club’s gates on Maronan Road at 6.15am when she arrived on Saturday.

The meet got under way at 7.30am, with a bit of fog giving way to a sunny day that encouraged many potential buyers over to Tinwald.

Stallholders were selling all things related to motoring, as well as crafts and bric-a-brac.

Bell, who drives a 1965 Ford Mustang to car club events, said there were 343 stalls, making it one of the bigger swap meets.

She said it was popular with both buyers and sellers and around half the stallholders had rebooked for the 2020 meet.

“We sold all our sites and put a few extra in on the day to accommodate stallholders who just turned up. It was a pretty busy day.”

The Americar Rod and Custom Club car show was also held on Saturday with displays and competitions at their rooms.

The East Street green will host displays of cars this week and the streets sprints will feature this weekend, with the finals late Sunday.

Next week’s events will include a night car trial and more displays on East Street, including Smallbones’ 100-year celebrations.

The street parade will wrap Wheels Week up on Sunday, March 19.

2019 duck season under way in Mid Canterbury From P1 Hunters spoken to by rangers reported good tallies. Three hunters on the Rangitata River reported a combined bag of 100 birds – the limit is 50 mallards and 25 shelduck paradise birds per hunters.

“So that wasn’t even close to the limit but it is an indication of good hunting and good numbers.

Wherever we went, there was no

shortage of ducks.”

Adams said the number of ducks harvested during the opening weekend would be calculated during a survey of hunters later this month.

Licence-holders would be contacted individually.

He is expecting numbers to be a little down on last year, when tallies were very high.

In the 2018 opening weekend,

some 25,500 mallard and 5500 shelduck were harvested. Similar numbers were harvested over the remaining three months of the game bird season, which ends on the last Sunday in July.

“For the hunters that we spoke to this weekend, I would estimate they harvested between 5 and 40 birds each.”

He said it was generally younger birds harvested during the sea-

son, with older birds who had survived previous seasons heading to safer spots.

Methven hunter Matt Hood said his party of eight shot about 100 ducks all up on an irrigation pond near Methven on opening morning.

The group was up about 4.30am, shared a hearty breakfast of bacon, eggs and venison, then went to the pond so they could begin

shooting at 6.45am. The weather was clear and all the hunters had “at least one good shot at something”.

Hood said his group were all mates who enjoyed the camaraderie of the occasion. Some of the group had been shooting together for the past decade.

He said the duck harvest would be turned into roasts, salami and duck nuggets.

Family struggles to find home for war medals

A development plan for the Ashburton Domain has been several years in the making but it will finally make its way to a council committee meeting next month.

For many families war medals are treasured reminders of the past, of the war efforts of their fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers.

Some families store those medals away, others have them framed where they take pride of place on a wall.

And some want to place those medals in places of safekeeping, but finding public places for private medal collections is not easy as Nancy Christey and Joe Whiting discovered.

Their father Clifford Whiting went to hell and back during the Gallipolli campaign in World War One, but unlike almost 3000 New Zealand soldiers, he survived to fight on other battlefields during that war.

His war service earned him a number of medals, among those the bronze Gallipoli medallion, instituted in 1967 for Australian and New Zealand personnel who participated in that campaign.

The siblings are two of a family of 12 children and hoped their father’s medals could become part of the Ashburton Museum’s war memorabilia collection.

In that way they would be preserved and they would be accessible for family members to view in years to come.

Whiting said they were surprised to find that when they approached museum staff the medals were not wanted.

“They had to go to a meeting to see if they could be accepted but eventually we had to take them back because they already had some the same,” Whiting said.

Christey said it was disappointing that no one seemed to

want their family medals, but accepted that there had to be a limit to the material any collection could contain.

“I guess it’s frustrating because he was an Ashburton man but no one in Ashburton seems to want

his war medals.”

Their failure to have their father’s medals accepted for a collection highlighted what could be a problem for other families as well, she said.

Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach said the museum had a collections policy that it used whenever items were offered by the community.

“While our museum appreciates and values all donation offers, we are governed by somewhat strict collection policies that considers the suitability, commitment and resource to manage these items in our inventory for many years into the future,” he said.

Two key determining factors consistent with how most major museums operate, were that of legal clarity on the transfer of title for an item and/or ownership, and condition of an item and whether we already have similar items in our collection, Riach said.

In the case where the museum did not accept a gifted item, donors were encouraged to find other ways to share their valued items and these could include framing, auctioning or passing collections on to their family or next generation.

Whiting was among the first wave of soldiers to leave New Zealand for Europe, sailing on August 14, 1914 as a 24-year-old soldier.

He fought in the Balkans and Egypt as well as the Dardenelles and at the war’s end returned home to begin civlilian life as a farmer, first at Mayfield and later at Hinds.

New home builds on the rise in Mid Canty

The number of new homes being constructed in the Ashburton District is slowly rising after a two-year slump, but it still falls well short of the numbers built in the years immediately after the Canterbury earthquakes.

Pre-earthquake fewer than 100 new homes were consented each year, but the number hit a high of 230 in the 2013-2014 financial year.

Numbers then started falling for a couple of years, and dropped to 158 in 2016/2017 before starting to climb again in the 2017/2018 year with 164 homes built, Ashburton District Council building services manager Michael Wong said.

Numbers were solid for the current year, he said.

The value of house consents was increasing each year, Wong said, with

$154 million worth of homes built in the last financial year compared to $80 million pre-earthquakes.

Over all categories, consent numbers were down for the currrent financial year, but values were significantly up on the back of two large projects consented for Eastfield and the East Street Murney building, he said.

He anticipates another large surge in values as consents for three school rebuilds begin filtering through the system. Ashburton Intermediate, Allenton and Ashburton College have all been approved for significant work over the next three years.

The college will be completely rebuilt with that project approved to $50 million. This build will run from 2020 to 2025 with the intermediate and Allenton expected to be completed in 2020. Planning for all three projects has started.

The development of the Ashburton Cemetery extension is almost completed, with just final landscaping and path gravelling to be completed before it is ready for use. Open spaces manager David Askin won’t be opening the new area up for burials, however, until the final few plots in the existing cemetery are used.

Museum collections To ensure it has better processes in place to prevent damage to collections, Ashburton museum staff are undertaking an assessment of pest management procedures and protocols to ensure items are free from insects and their larvae at the time they are donated.

Wastewater service A 40 hectare block of land bordered by Farm, Racecourse and Allens roads and Mill Creek will soon be connected to Ashburton’s wastewater service. The area is zoned residential C which provides for urban level residential development which means the council is obliged to provide access to this service for future development. The work is likely to be completed in 2020/2021.

LED lights The council’s drive to install LED street lights in Ashburton and rural village streets is just 24 lights away from completion.

Minor crash Police were called to a minor crash on Melcombe Street at 12.35pm yesterday. No injuries or road blockages resulted. Firefighters in Methven also spent nearly half an hour yesterday morning putting out a small property fire.

Rock climber falls 7m A rock climber is in a serious condition after falling 7m at Tongariro National Park yesterday morning. The woman, in her early 20s, was with her climbing partner in the popular climbing spot in the Mangatepopo Valley when she fell at about 10.30am. She was flown to Rotorua Hospital.

Darfield crash One person has died following a crash on Old West Coast Road, Darfield on Friday. Emergency services attended following a report that a single car had gone off the road at around 10.50pm.

Two other occupants of the car were taken to hospital, one with serious injuries and one with moderate injuries.

Mother’s courage praised

NZer detained in UAE prison

NZME Distraught relatives of a Kiwi man shot dead by Panama pirates have praised his wife’s courage, saying her quick thinking and bravery saved the lives of her two young children.

Alan Culverwell, 60, died after being shot at close range with a shot gun after pirates boarded his family’s boat under the cover of darkness.

Despite suffering a machete-blow to the shoulder, Derryn Culverwell battled to lock herself and their twin children in the boat’s cabin and make an

emergency call to New Zealand to raise the alarm.

“She’s a very brave woman. We are so grateful that she found that strength,” her sister-in-law Derryn Hughes told the Herald.

Three people have now been charged in connection with Culverwell’s murder.

Even with a horrific machete-injury, she had kept fighting, Hughes said.

“She was fighting for her children’s lives. I don’t know what to say to her to thank her. This could have been so much worse.”

Three people have now been arrested in connection with Cul-

verwell’s killing. Leandro Herrera and Avelino Arosemena appeared in court today, the Guardian reported. The are charged with aggravated homicide, robbery, criminal association and mistreatment of a minor.

A third suspect, a 17-year-old minor, earlier appeared in court in connection with the case.

Derryn Culverwell was at court for the hearings and was photographed outside today.

She has been discharged from hospital and is now recovering from her injuries. One of her children also received minor injuries during he incident.

The family were on a dream trip having sold their Marlborough Sounds property and bought a 65-foot launch. They had travelled to Florida to pick it up and were on the journey of a lifetime home when terror struck.

Culverwell had awoken in the early hours after hearing a noise on the boat’s roof. He was killed when he went to investigate.

The family had been so meticulous with their preparations but nothing could prepare anyone for this, Hughes said.

“They were very diligent with things like security and safety,” Hughes said.

■■HATEPE CRASH

Three killed in crash Police have confirmed the three people killed after a crash at Hatepe, south of Taupo on Saturday, were all in a van.

It collided with a truck about 4.15am on Saturday on State Highway 1.

St John sent two ambulances to the scene, and staff treated all three people but they died at the scene. The truck driver was taken to Taupo Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A New Zealand Police spokeswoman yesterday said the Serious Crash Unit had finished its investigation at the scene, between Rotongaio Road and Hinemaiaia Access Road.

“However, the police investigation will take some time. We will not know what the contributing factors were until that investigation is complete, which usually takes some months.”

The highway was partially closed on Saturday morning, which caused some delays.

However, the scene was cleared by 11.20am.

NZME A New Zealander has been detained in a United Arab Emirates prison.

Maria Morehu, 60, was jailed this week in Abu Dhabi after failing to pay back bank loans, her family said.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman confirmed that Morehu had been detained, but could not confirm details around why she was arrested or whether she had be charged.

Morehu, a mother of five, was being given consular assistance, the spokeswoman said.

A Givealittle page set up to help clear Morehu’s debts said she had moved to the country in 2009 to work as an English language teacher.

In 2014, she had time off work because she broke both ankles in an accident and subsequently could not pay off loans she had taken out in the country, the Givealittle page said.

It is not known what the loans were for. Morehu’s family said she owed $40,000 to $50,000. She was unable to secure new work because of the outstanding police cases and she was in a battle with her insurance company over her income insurance.

The details around her arrest and detention could not be verified. Ruby Pitiroi, who is Morehu’s niece, did not return requests for comment. The Givealittle page said Morehu had heart problems and the family was concerned about her health in jail.

“She was fearful that she wouldn’t survive the harsh conditions in prison with her heart complications and pleaded with us to find a way to bring her home.”

Jet plunges into river AP A military-chartered jet carrying 143 people landed hard, then bounced and swerved as the pilot struggled to control it amid thunder and lightning.

The plane ultimately skidded off the runway and came to a crashing halt in a river at Naval Air Station Jacksonville.

It meant chaos and terror for passengers in the Boeing 737 as the plane jolted back and forth and oxygen masks deployed, then overhead bins opened, sending contents spilling out.

But authorities said all the people onboard emerged without critical injuries, lining up on the wings as they waited to be rescued.

Only a 3-month-old baby was hospitalised, and that was done out of an abundance of caution, officials said.

“I think it is a miracle,” said Captain Michael Connor, the base’s commanding officer, hours after the plane landed.

The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team of investigators to the crash site in the St Johns River in north Florida, where the aircraft was still partially submerged in shallow water and its nose cone was sliced off, apparently from the impact.

Members of the 16-person NTSB team recovered the plane’s flight data recorder.

Investigators will examine the aircraft, the environment and human factors in trying to discover why the plane rolled into the river. The pavement on the runway wasn’t grooved, and Landsberg said grooves can help the water flow off the pavement more quickly. He said investigators will examine what role that may have, with reported heavy rain during the landing.

The flight took off from the US military base in Cuba with 136 passengers and seven crew members. It was a regular charter run by Miami Air International, which has many military contracts, including weekly flights between the Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the Jacksonville air station as well as Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. The company didn’t immediately respond to messages from AP. The aircraft had no prior history of accidents, said NTSB vice-chairman Bruce Landsberg.

Among those onboard was Cheryl Bormann, a defence lawyer, who described the chaotic landing.

The plane “literally hit the ground and then it bounced. It was clear that the pilot did not have complete control of the plane

because it bounced some more, it swerved and tilted left and right,” she said. “The pilot was trying to control it but couldn’t, and then all of a sudden it smashed into something.”

Bormann said people weren’t screaming because the flight staff worked quickly to give direction. Everyone onboard helped one another to put on their life vests and then evacuated to safety.

A veteran death penalty lawyer from Chicago, Bormann has been defending Walid bin Attash, who is charged with helping to train some of the 9/11 hijackers.

The US holds 40 men at the detention centre at Guantanamo Bay. It has been prosecuting some of them by military commissions, including five charged with planning and aiding the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Their cases have been in the pretrial stage since May 2012 and no trial has been scheduled.

Authorities say everyone onboard the flight was alive and accounted for, but nearly two dozen people sought medical attention.

The passengers were a mix of military personnel and families, and a few civilians. While some were staying in the area, others planned to fly on to other parts of the country, Connor said.

The announcement that Peter Mayhew, the British-born actor who originally played Chewbacca in the Star Wars franchise, had died shook up the science fiction and cinema worlds. The first on-screen Wookiee died last week at 74.

Mayhew’s passing reignited one of the great debates in Star Wars lore: Why didn’t Chewbacca get a medal after the destruction of the first Death Star? At the end of 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope, the film’s final moments show the Rebel Alliance celebrating a big victory. Luke Skywalker just took the Empire’s worlddestroying superweapon – the Death Star – and turned it into space dust.

Are you invested in staying alive?

A

light blue car that pulled out in front of me at an intersection this weekend created one of those moments when life slowed down to a frame-by-frame shot, ending with the rear of the car flashing clear just centimetres from my bonnet.

We both carried on, but things could have been very different had I not slammed on the brakes.

I didn’t report the bad driving (the other car was on a give way) and it occurs to me now that maybe I have become used to seeing such behaviour on our roads.

The driver who can’t wait for a safe gap, or the one who must pass everyone in the passing lane at breakneck speed, or the driver

whose car runs out of petrol on a motorway and stops in the middle of the lane, causing a four-car pile-up.

Our roads are littered with drivers making bad decisions.

Their actions cause grief, harm and worse; some of it short-term, some of it forever.

Some bad drivers end up in court and, increasingly, the police summary of facts includes the

fact that bad driving has been reported by a member of the public, another road user who has watched a car swerve in its lane, speed up or slow down suddenly, and even cross the centre line.

Most times these drivers turn out to be under the influence of alcohol and, horrifyingly, they have sometimes already driven long distances before the law catches up with them.

Police have a couple of options for reporting bad drivers – the first is by dialling *555 from a mobile phone for events that are urgent but not life-threatening.

These are things that also include traffic congestion, breakdowns and obstructions on the road.

You can also report non-urgent

incidents of poor driving where you do not wish the offender to be prosecuted.

You need to provide a registration plate number and make or colour of the vehicle you are reporting, and fill out a Community Roadwatch form online.

These reports are confidential and after police have assessed your complaint, they will ring the owner of the vehicle and talk about what about expected standards of driver behaviour.

So, be patient on the road.

Expect drivers to make a mistake or behave badly, and if you feel strongly enough, report them. I will continue to drive as if everyone else on the road is an idiot, no doubt many others will be

doing the same.

Wheels Week, on the other hand, is a great chance to see some good drivers in action, from the street sprints to the speedway and motorcycle events, and more sedate rallies. These are people who know how to handle a vehicle and have a great deal of passion and respect for their machines.

These are people who enthusiastically talked to our photographer this weekend and posed for pictures while telling her what they love about the thrill of motorsport, about the vintage car they restored and drove because it reminded them of Sunday drives with the family. These are drivers invested in their vehicles.

Telling Roslyn’s story R

ecently I made the decision to support the second reading of the End of Life Choice Bill which would provide a legal path to euthanasia.

I’ve given it much thought, held two public meetings, read and responded to 5000 of you who’ve written to me, and met with more than 200 people who’ve asked to meet through my Ashburton and Timaru offices.

It was not an easy decision to make, and I recognise not everyone will agree.

I do want to share with you the story of a woman I met with recently. She’s isn’t from Ashburton, but I think the discussion we had is one of many worthy of repeating.

It’s not pleasant, and if it’s upsetting to you my advice is to read no further.

Her name is Roslyn, and her sister Gina died after 12 years of suffering from a rare and debilitating illness. It robbed Gina of everything she enjoyed.

She was bedridden and lost the ability to speak. Gina could tolerate no light, and very little sound. She took to wearing an

eye mask taped to her face, and earplugs to dull the sounds that we treat as normal but she described as a screaming siren going non-stop all day and night for months on end, preventing her from sleeping.

She could swallow only thin liquids. Even pureed food was too difficult to handle.

The pressure all over her emaciated body meant that she rolled herself from side to side all day and all night in a ceaseless attempt to escape pain.

But there was no escaping her painful pressure areas caused by muscle wasting, leaving her bones protruding all down her spine, hips, joints, and limbs.

In Gina’s care facility she had access to expert palliative specialists, dedicated medical professionals, and a loving family and friends.

Yet her suffering continued to grow daily.

Morphine was completely ineffective for pressure pain, as were all other medications and attempts to palliate her agony.

Gina was in irreversible decline, but knew she might live for decades in unrelenting pain. And so eventually she found a way to end her suffering, alone and unsupported.

Not all of these are my words.

I met with Roslyn earlier this year and repeat them now only because she cannot.

Roslyn, like her sister Gina, has been diagnosed with the same illness.

She cannot speak, and like Gina can now only communicate through written word or touch screen. When we met she wore earplugs. I could do nothing more than wince every time a door slammed down the hallway or a car drove past loudly, and I saw the pain on her face.

She knows her condition will continue to decline, and she too will end up bedridden like Gina was for so long.

Roslyn is not ready to die yet.

Despite her pain and worsening

condition she still gets some joy out of life, and is determined to see through what Gina could not: a change in the law.

I understand the objections, and have spoken to David Seymour, the sponsor of the Bill about some changes. Three of the four amendments he’s agreed to satisfy many of those concerns.

I agree that euthanasia should never become common practice, and that vulnerable people must be protected. We have excellent palliative care that works for most people, and we can improve it even more.

But I cannot in good conscience force people like Roslyn to go through the same tortured existence that her sister Gina suffered.

Flores de Mayo Flores de Mayo (Spanish for Flowers of May) is a festival held in the Philippines in the month of May, celebrated in honour of the blessed Virgin Mary.

Introduced by the Spaniards, this festival has since become part of Filipino traditions identified with youth, love and romance.

This year the festival will be held in Ashburton on May 18.

By Adi Avnit Following the horrific terror attack in Christchurch I was approached by leaders of the Ashburton Muslim community to help facilitate an open day at their masjid (mosque).

I worked alongside Ilana Bachelor, the welcoming communities programme co-ordinator for the Ashburton District.

The open day was organised in conjunction with MP Andrew Falloon’s planned planting of a new garden at the masjid.

The masjid is beautifully decorated with a carpet which was especially imported to New Zea-

land, decorated with patterns (Islamic art mostly avoids figurative images to avoid becoming objects of worship, causing a general aesthetic shift toward mathematically-based decoration).

People might have noticed the carpet was not aligned with the walls, and the reason for that is it’s facing Mecca, a holy city to the Islam, located in Saudi Arabia. Muslims pray five times a day.

After promoting the event and helping organise it we worried about numbers, especially since the weather turned out to be cold and windy.

Luckily the weather didn’t stop

hundreds of people showing up, enjoying food and camaraderie, and even viewing the prayer, which was held at 12.30pm.

It had encouraged the community to ask any questions, however sensitive they were, and members of the Muslim community were there to answer anything.

Overall the day was a big success, helping to further build relationships with the community and to break down barriers.

The month of Ramadan, in which Muslims fast during daytime, is nearly upon us, and hopefully we’ll get another chance to interact with the Muslim community when it’s over.

We have a mixed group this time with participants from The Philippines, Samoa, Columbia, New Zealand and India.

We are really pleased to welcome our first man on the course and look forward to having more men join us in the future.

The ladies out on the road are going really well. Confidence is

building and a couple more ladies are booked to sit the test later in the month.

Our mentors are doing a great job and it sounds like they are really enjoying what they do.

It’s so empowering for the women to learn new skills while having what has become a social outing.

We are so thankful to have a wonderful group of volunteers, both driving mentors and child minders who are so generous with their time. They make such a difference to the lives

of the students.

Sah wah dee pee mai ka – Happy New Year Thai While the Kiwi English group still haven’t started regular meetings this year, with some of our members working hard, we do keep in touch.

We had a pot-luck dinner celebrating the Songkran, Thai new year (April 15), and played some games at Fiona’s place at Lake Hood, and enjoyed the hospitality and friends that have developed in the group over time through our meetings.

During the pot-luck dinner we enjoyed Thai green curry (made from coconut milk and fresh green chillies).

We’ll probably go back to doing monthly outings later this year (for example, last year we went out to pick wild blackberries near the Ashburton river).

Being a Bahá’í

By Diane Candy The Bahá’í Faith is a religion teaching the essential worth of all religions, and the unity and equality of all people. Established by Bahá’u’lláh in 1863, it initially grew in Persia and parts of the Middle East, where it has faced ongoing persecution since its inception.

It is estimated to have between five and eight million adherents, known as Bahá’ís, spread out into most of the world’s countries.

Bahá’í teachings are in some ways similar to other monotheistic faiths: God is considered single and all-powerful.

However, Bahá’u’lláh taught that religion is orderly and progressively revealed by one God through manifestations of God who are the founders of major world religions throughout history; Buddha, Jesus, and Muhammad being the most recent in the period before the Báb and Bahá’u’lláh. Bahá’í’s regard the major religions as fundamentally unified in purpose, though varied in social practices and interpretations.

There is a similar emphasis on the unity of all people, openly rejecting notions of racism and nationalism.

At the heart of Bahá’í teachings is the goal of a unified world order that ensures the prosperity of all nations, races, creeds, and classes.

The following are a few examples from Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings on personal conduct that are prohibited or discouraged: • Backbiting and gossip are prohibited and denounced.

• Drinking or selling alcohol is forbidden.

• Sexual intercourse is only permitted between a husband and wife, and thus premarital, extramarital, or homosexual intercourse are forbidden. (The Bahá’í faith, however, leaves the

• Begging as a profession is forbidden.

The Bahá’í International Community has offices at the United Nations in New York and Geneva and representations to United Nations regional commissions and other offices in Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Nairobi, Rome, Santiago, and Vienna.

In recent years an Office of the Environment and an Office for the Advancement of Women were established as part of its United Nations Office.

The Bahá’í faith has also undertaken joint development programmes with various other United Nations agencies. In the 2000 Millennium Forum of the United Nations a Bahá’í was invited as the only non-governmental speaker during the summit.

Diane Candy is an Ashburtonian Baha’i, and this is her story.

I had a dream when I was 8 years old. Little did I realise the significance of that dream, nor where it would lead me over the following years.

I became a Baha’i at 20 years of age. What attracted me to the Baha’is was their belief of all mankind as one family.

The love and unity in their spirit and behaviour convinced me. I attended several youth conferences and offered to do service in the Solomon Islands at their national Baha’i Centre in Honiara, to do office work. Never having gone overseas before, this was both exciting and a little daunting.

Questions I asked myself as I made my way to the Solomon Islands – Did I have enough faith?

Will I be able to adapt, adjust to another culture? How will I fit in?

What do I need to know?

Immediately when I arrived, I was immersed in the work to be done, which was not office work, but travelling to many islands and villages.

One had to be flexible. There was a team of youth always willing to accompany me, as was the custom.

Together we made much music and merriment, sharing of stories and many hours of walking to remote bush villages and travelling in small canoes, visiting ‘the friendly isles’, often in adverse weather conditions.

I had to learn quickly the customs, because each village had different rules of conduct. Pidgin English was the language to communicate, because there were about 60 different dialects within the 200 islands.

It was fun and interesting, often a challenge of one sort or another.

During these youth meetings, I met my husband to be and after about a year, we married and had four children.

I lived 10 years in the Solomon Islands, before returning to New Zealand.

Our family has been living in Ashburton ever since. I nursed here for 20 years, then for the last 18 years, I have been a counsellor.

Over this last year I have been learning to cook for youth camps and family camps. These have been fun days, as we can learn so much from each other.

I have often found youth fun to be with, as I enjoy their energy and activities. The love and acceptance I met at these camps was encouraging and gave me hope for the future.

During my time back in New Zealand, one of the highlights has been learning about the Virtue Project. Learning how to practice different virtues to help my life and the life of my children, has been an interesting journey.

I would encourage any and every individual on the planet, to learn more about the Virtues Project, as we learn to live amongst each other and need to adjust, as conditions change.

Every day I reflect on a virtue, which helps me at any given moment or with any activity in my life. I would be interested in teaching the foundation principles and the ‘how to’ of the Virtues Project, within a group of the Newcomers’ Network.

Lately I have been studying with a small group of friends from mixed ethnicities, discussing our own moral views, our understanding, experiences and choices.

I find these discussions very interesting as we all walk together and problem solve along the way.

Different cultures have different ideas towards activities of daily living, eg food, health, social events.

I also joined the Mid Canterbury Timebank a year ago and this has allowed me to meet people from all walks of life in Ashburton.

We have had some fun activities. I have offered some tutorials on making kombucha, as a health support.

An adventurous spirit, building resiliency and adaptation are necessary in our changing world.

Learning from each other is a way to survive.

I like to help people learn about themselves and finding ways which they can adjust in their lifestyle, eg recipes or learning about our environment here in New Zealand.

Sharing ideas regards this culture, like the rules for child discipline, or writing your stories, so you can pass on to your children.

I would be happy to meet you. I do not meet online and only work face-to-face in a home environment.

Being a Bahá’í has helped me to meet new people from various backgrounds and in an endeavour to gain an understanding of their living and an opportunity to love and harmonise, connect with folk from all walks of life and from various countries of the world and fulfil the dream that I had as a young child.

Some principles of the Bahá’í faith that I believe would help humanity, include universal education – where every girl, boy and adult can receive an education, a universal language in addition to our mother tongue, so we can communicate fully with people of diverse backgrounds, the equality of men and women, allowing us to respect and appreciate all, work as a form of worship, and a universal monetary system, so regardless of which country we visit would make for ease of life.

The Bahá’í Gardens in Haifa (Israel) is the place that I dreamed of when I was a child. Haifa is one place on earth where people from many different backgrounds and languages, live and work in harmony and happiness.

ASA exhibition entries open

Calling all Mid Canterbury painters, sculptors, ceramicists, jewellers and photographers – entries have opened for the Ashburton Society of Arts annual exhibition.

Organisers are excited leading up to their 55th annual exhibition, set to be a crowd puller after last year drawing some of the largest flocks of art lovers the Ashburton Art Gallery has seen.

The exhibition is a calendar highlight in the Mid Canterbury art scene, and kicks off with an awards evening on July 1. It will run until July 26.

Publicity officer Mandy Casey said it was fantastic each year to see the outstanding quality of work produced.

It was a highlight for Mid Canterbury artists to see their work displayed alongside fellow artists and guest artists, as well as the many entries which came from throughout New Zealand.

Last year more than 400 works filled exhibition spaces, and this year is set to be just

What do you like about playing this character?

Playing Tina is a challenge. This will be my first year performing for Variety Theatre Ashburton where I am not part of the children’s ensemble.

The challenge is what makes it so exciting. Tina is a show girl and can be super over-the-top with her moves. It’s a very exciting charac-

ter to be able to play.

Are there any similarities between yourself and your character?

To be fair, there aren’t many similarities apart from the couple of blond comments she makes. She loves to dance, sing and perform, and I have always loved to do that.

What have been the highlights and lowlights, challenges and achievements, of rehearsals so far?

So many challenges during rehearsals, including multiple dances to learn, as well as the singing, and making sure it is in part. And then, when I am Tina, there is a three-part harmony, with just three actors on stage.

I have really enjoyed the challenges. The best achievement so far is getting the thumb’s-up from musical director Jo Castelow when we nail our harmonies.

What are you looking forward to most about bringing Sister Act to the stage?

I am so looking forward to Ashburton seeing once again the incredible talent we have here in Canterbury.

I am extremely looking forward to getting back on that stage, alongside this amazing cast. The show will definitely be one not to be missed.

Barbarians miss chance to go top

Marist Saints downed the Ashburton Barbarians 34-20 on Saturday to ensure the Christchurch side finished round one of the Canterbury Rugby League division one competition at the top of the pack.

Heading into the big match in Ashburton the two sides were tied at the top of the table with a loss to each of their names.

The Barbarians’ loss came in round one against the defending champion Burnham Chevaliers, while Marist’s was actually a big win over the Halswell Hornets, but it officially went down in the history books as a loss after Marist were found to have fielded an ineligible player.

So although they had a loss on paper, Marist were effectively the competition’s only unbeaten side, and the Ashburton Barbarians knew they were going to be in for a battle.

But, the Ashburton side had put more than 60 points on two different teams in the past couple of weeks, so their tails were up and they were eager to upset the apple cart.

It wasn’t to be though, and while the Barbarians coach Steve Gamble said any loss was disappointing, he was happy with the way his side played.

“To be fair, it was a game that could have gone either way and it was their day and not ours,” Gamble said.

“It was just one of those things.

“It wasn’t through a lack of trying.”

He said that a couple of mistakes at vital times made a big difference, because you couldn’t afford to give a side like Marist a sniff.

“That could have been the difference between winning and

losing but we will take those things back to the drawing board and learn from them,” Gamble said.

This season’s competition is decided over three rounds, leading into finals, and Saturday’s games

were the final acts of round one.

The defending champion Chevaliers, after starting with a win, hadn’t had their best season so far.

In recent weeks they’d had a loss and a draw, but took full ad-

vantage of the easy points on Saturday after Shirley defaulted to them.

Round two would follow the same path as round one, meaning the Chevaliers were the Barbarians’ next up opposition.

Warriors’ losing streak goes to four after lacklustre loss

By Michael Burgess The Warriors’ 2019 season needs a major rebuilding job.

It’s only May, but already a long way back, after this 36-18 loss to the Knights, their fourth defeat on the bounce.

The home side should have been desperate for the result, especially after coming so close in Melbourne, but the Knights always looked more likely.

They had more power, more passion, more pace and more precision.

The Warriors had no real answer; the Knights took control from the onset, and the Warriors were never able to gain any dominance.

The result continues the Warriors’ poor start to 2019.

The situation is not irretrievable – and the acquisition of Kodi Nikorima will make a difference but the pressure grows with each week.

It was a patchy effort.

Adam Blair Some good moments, but not nearly enough of them. The Warriors were flat from the start as the Knights took the initiative, and the Warriors weren’t quite good enough to win it back.

David Klemmer was an almost unstoppable force in the middle of the park, and his ‘follow

me’ effort gave the Knights great momentum. And Newcastle had more intensity, more desire and more people willing to do the one percenters, while the Warriors seemed to look for team-mates to do the dirty work.

Adam Blair did nothing to lift the doubt around him – giving away two cheap penalties that resulted in points, while as a pack the forwards were outpointed.

The Warriors reshuffled backline saw Gerard Beale start on the right wing (for David Fusitu’a) with Patrick Herbert inside him.

Hayze Perham came onto the bench.

The Warriors made a slow start.

An early penalty was converted

by Kalyn Ponga, before another one saw Lachlan Burr placed on report for a dangerous tackle on David Klemmer, as the Kangaroos forward was lifted above the horizontal.

From the ensuing set Mitchell Pearce sliced through from close range; everyone in the stadium

knew he would try it – it was a carbon copy of his effort against the Eels last week – but the Warriors were unable to stop it.

Ten minutes had elapsed before the Warriors had even entered the Knights half, but they made an immediate impact, with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck creating a hole for Patrick Herbert, who produced a huge swan dive to celebrate his first try at Mt Smart.

The Warriors were back in the contest, but Pearce was in control, playing the game in a dinner suit.

The lack of kick pressure allowed the pinpoint bomb for the Knights second try, reeled in by a leaping Shaun Kenny-Dowall ahead of Ken Maumalo.

Stephen Kearney’s men had their opportunities, but they was spoilt by clunky execution, before Maumalo’s try finally turned some pressure into points, after Hiku did well to knock back a Green bomb. The big winger drew the Warriors level early in the second half – after a show and go from

Tohu Harris created space.

But the Knights always looked more likely, though they were fortunate that a blatant James Gavet shoulder charge that took Burr out of the match for a time went unpunished.

The Knights third try summed up the Warriors day; their defensive line was stationary as Newcastle went from side to side in the shadow of the Warriors’ goalposts, before Sione Mata’utia busted two tackles to score.

That put the Knights six points ahead, with plenty of time on the clock, but the Warriors seemed to panic; pushing the pass on early tackles, instead of making the terrority first.

The visitors looked more dangerous, and were rewarded with Hymel Hunt’s try, after Edrick Lee soared above the pack to grab a Pearce bomb.

A special Ponga effort – after he ran a great line off Pearce –rubbed salt into the Warriors’ gaping wound.

Down to the wire AP The English Premier League’s thrilling title race is going down to the final day after yet another late winner from Liverpool.

With Mohamed Salah back in the locker room, shaken by a heavy knock to the head, it fell to his replacement to score the crucial goal.

Divock Origi glanced home a deflected 86th-minute header to earn Liverpool a 3-2 win at Newcastle yesterday, lifting Juergen Klopp’s side back above Manchester City and into the lead by two points.

The pressure is back on the champions, who host in-form Leicester overnight needing a victory to keep the destiny of the title in their own hands heading into the last weekend.

“Unbelievable,” Klopp said, after uttering an expletive live on British television.

With shows of resilience seemingly every week, Liverpool and City are bringing the best out of each other in a title race neither team deserves to lose.

Liverpool has 94 points, a tally that would have been good enough to win the title in all but two seasons since the introduction of the Premier League in 1992.

The Reds have lost just once in the league, 2-1 at City in January.

It still might not be enough, though.

If City wins its last two games – it finishes the season with a match at lowly Brighton – the league trophy will be staying at Etihad Stadium.

It remains to be seen if Salah is in good enough shape to play Liverpool’s final match, at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers, though the early indications are encouraging.

The Egypt forward, one of Liverpool’s first-half scorers, was carried off on a stretcher in the 73rd minute after smashing the back of his head on the ground following a collision with Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Salah appeared to be in tears at one point and covered his face with his hands as he was taken off the field.

Klopp said after the game, however, that Salah watched the end of the match and was “OK,” despite receiving a “proper knock to the head.”

“We have to see,” Klopp added about the league’s top scorer on 22, two more than team-mate Sadio Mane and Man City striker Sergio Aguero.

At the other end of the Premier League ladder, there’ll be no last-day battle for survival this season, with Cardiff becoming the third and final team to be

relegated after losing to Crystal Palace 3-2.

What looks to be going to the wire – just like the title race – is the fight for Champions League qualification behind Liverpool and City.

Tottenham had two men sent off and conceded an injury-time goal in losing at Bournemouth 1-0.

The defeat kept Spurs in third place, two points ahead of Chelsea, four ahead of Arsenal, and five clear of Manchester United.

Despite its courage and grit, there was an element of luck to Liverpool’s latest win.

The team could easily have been forced to play the majority of the game against Newcastle with 10 men.

Right back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who set up both the opening goal for Virgil van Dijk and also Salah’s goal which made it 2-1, blocked the ball with his elbow on his own goal line moments before Christian Atsu made it 1-1 in the 20th minute.

The referee could have given a penalty and red card, but instead awarded Newcastle the goal.

In other games, Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Fulham 1-0 to virtually seal a seventh-place finish, which could earn a berth in next season’s Europa League, and West Ham eased past Southampton 3-0.

Big season on the greens for Allenton

They’re a small club in the grand scheme of things, but that didn’t stop the Allenton Bowling Club from achieving something big at the recent Canterbury Champion of Champion bowls tournament.

Those representing the club produced what was believed to have been Allenton’s best ever showing at the event, which pitted champions from clubs around Canterbury against each other over two weekends.

Leading the way was Rodney Greaney, who not only took out Canterbury’s champion of champion singles title, but also skipped the club’s triples to a spot in the final, where they came runners up.

Peter Woodham and Tom Sutton rounded out the triples team.

But Allenton’s success didn’t end there – the club’s ladies also got in on the action.

Allenton’s ladies pair of Sandra Holdom and Annette Sargisson won the champion of champions title, while Holdom made the singles final which she lost narrowly, 21-19.

Played over two weekends, the Canterbury Champion of Champions competition took in clubs from as far south as Hinds and

as far north as Cheviot, and the finals day was played at the Woolston Park Bowling Club.

For Greaney, taking out the champion of champion singles title formed just part of what was a pretty good summer on the greens for him.

Greaney lives in Ashburton and plays out of the Allenton Bowling Club, but also travels to Christchurch to play out of the Elmwood Park club, and a top season with both clubs meant he had a decision to make as to which he’d represent for the Canterbury champion competition.

Earlier in the season, playing for Elmwood Park, he won a centre triples title, and he also skipped the pair and the fours in the Canterbury Premier League competition.

With a new set of bowls this season, Greaney said he’d played more over this summer, than he had in recent years.

He said that before this season, it had been eight or nine years since he’d played singles in local events.

It paid off, but a modest Greaney wasn’t shouting about it from the rooftops.

“A bit of luck goes a long way,” he said.

Blues finding new ways to lose away from home

By Patrick McKendry Physically dominated by the Brumbies and still yet to win an away game this season, the Blues have slipped to 13th on the Super Rugby ladder but remarkably are still in with a shot of making the playoffs due to the unpredictability of this competition.

And while their 26-21 defeat in Canberra might not necessarily have been a huge surprise given the Blues’ inconsistency over the

past month, the manner of it will.

Their scrum was in near disarray at the end and their lineout maul defence similarly shambolic although despite all of that and the near constant pressure the Brumbies put them under in the second half, the Blues could have got something more out of it had Otere Black kicked two regulation penalties in the first half.

It will be Groundhog Day again for coach Leon MacDonald who will be frustrated that the lessons

aren’t being learned and with the added twist that their next three opponents, the Hurricanes, Chiefs and Crusaders will be gunning for them up front.

The Blues’ pack was in penalty trouble for the majority of the match at GIO Stadium, with props Alex Hodgman and Ofa Tuungafasi shown yellow cards and the home side made a mockery of the recent improvements to the Blues’ scrum and mauling.

There are still six rounds to go

but the Blues need to start winning in order to get back into the top eight.

It appears beyond them because while they are only three competition points from the eighth-placed Stormers, the Brumbies, Reds, Lions and Waratahs are ahead of them and have similar ambitions.

The good news is the Blues are back at Eden Park for the next fortnight, the bad is that their opposition are the Hurricanes on Friday and the Chiefs eight days later.

Neither of those two Kiwi teams will have missed the fact the Brumbies too easily starved the Blues of territory and possession after a bright first 10 minutes during which they shot to a 12-0 lead.

Given the quality on their reserves bench, the Blues would have been positive at halftime given they were still leading 1512 but in the end they had few answers, with Brumbies hooker Folau Fainga’a scoring a hat-trick of tries from lineout drives.

Basketballers hit the road

Ashburton College’s senior basketball sides will both head to Christchurch tomorrow night for the start of their respective Canterbury secondary school competitions.

The Ashburton College girls play for the Whelan Trophy and they’re seeded sixth heading into this season’s competition, while the boys play in the Thomson Trophy, for which they’re this year seeded 10th.

In the 2019 season the Thomson Trophy division one teams will be split into two even pools where they will play five other teams, with the top three from each pool moving on to cement their seed in the quarter-finals.

It won’t be all over for the other teams though, as the top two teams from their pool of six will be given a chance to prove they belong in the same quarter-final round – but they will have to face the toughest two opponents when they get there.

Cashmere High School top the seedings for the boys, followed

by St Andrew’s College, while for the girls Christchurch Girls’ High School and Rangi Ruru are the top two seeds in the Whelan Trophy competition.

Each team will play all eight others, with quarter-finals in round 11.

Tomorrow night’s opening round of the competition sees the Ashburton College senior boys hit the road to play the Shirley Boys’ High School Spartans, with tip off at 7pm.

Meanwhile the girls have a little bit further to travel, with their first-up opposition being Kaiapoi High School at home.

Tip off in that game will be at 5.15pm.

Next week in round two both of the Ashburton College sides

will be at home, with both teams playing Rangiora High School at the Oxford Street stadium.

The boys will play at 5.15pm

followed by the girls’ game at 7pm.

The 2019 finals night will be on August 27 at Cowles Stadium.

Exhaustion a factor as playoffs heat up AP Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets could use the kind of break everybody else is getting in the second round of the NBA playoffs.

If anybody deserved some time off, it’s the All-Star centre who just played 65 minutes in a game.

But there’s no rest for the weary now.

The Nuggets and Trail Blazers will be back on the court today for Game 4, surely a little low on

“As far as the minutes, everybody’s tired. Were built for what’s happening right now. That’s what we had to do to win the game,” Portland’s Damian Lillard said.

Southern back in winning form

Some dreams stayed alive, while others came crashing down, in a dramatic penultimate round of the Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Cup rugby competition on Saturday.

Southern picked up a big win over Hornby at Hinds, 62-17, which put them back at the top of the pool A leaderboard, meaning that when the play-offs picture emerged this weekend, they should be well and truly in the mix.

But the news wasn’t so good for some others, including Rakaia, with a surprise 24-15 loss to Ohoka meaning they will need to beat Southbridge with a bonus point in the final round, and for other results to go their way, to be a chance of grabbing one of two wildcard entries to the finals.

The new three-pool system meant that at the end of Saturday’s round the top two teams from each pool, and the next two best placed teams on a combined points table, will go through to the next weekend’s quarter-finals.

With one round to go, it was now likely Southern would be Mid Canterbury’s sole side to make it through, and if their win over Hornby on Saturday was anything to go by, they could well be title contenders.

They’d only lost one game so far this season, to the team level with them at the top of the pool A leaderboard, Darfield.

That loss was last weekend, and Southern well and truly put that behind them against Hornby on Saturday.

Five first-half tries put them out to a 29-7 lead at half time, and they picked up where they’d left off when Brian Hazel fended off the Hornby defence to score his second early in the second half.

by Jon Dampney’s second for the home side, Hornby soon struck back with their third.

From there though, it was all Southern.

scoring doubles, and Josh McAtamney, James Hastings, Aaron Chudleigh, Ben Naylor, Will MacKenzie and Gus McKenzie adding one each.

Southern coach Andrew Carr said his side made a few mistakes, but largely he was happy.

“We weren’t polished, but we still got a reasonably good win,” Carr said.

For Rakaia coach Terry Murray, it was a different story.

A win over Ohoka in pool B would have put his side in a position where, had they won their final round match, they’d potentially have made the finals and had a chance to make up for last year’s defeat in the final to Waihora.

Ohoka had only won one game before Saturday, but made it two

against a Rakaia side that played much of the game with only 14 men due to a red card 15 minutes in for a dangerous tackle.

A yellow card in the second half meant Rakaia were down to 13 for 10 minutes, but Murray said those 10 minutes didn’t have a huge impact on the result.

“To be fair they probably outplayed us, they out-passioned us, and we didn’t play a very good brand of footy.

“It was one of those games where we got beaten by a better side,” Murray said.

Murray said Rakaia didn’t take Ohoka lightly. They trained well during the week and were in a good space heading into the match, but things just didn’t come together against an Ohoka side with nothing to lose.

The loss put Rakaia in a position where, mathematically, they could still make the finals if they beat Southbridge this week, and other results went their way.

It’s a similar story for Celtic, whose 62-28 win over Oxford in pool C meant that they were still an outside chance of making the top eight.

Tololima Savaiinaea scored a hat-trick and kicked six conversions, while Elyh McKibbin, Shepherd Mhembere, David Morrison and Leauma Tu’uga scored a try each.

Celtic coach Shane Enright said his side played well, and the win was a good confidence booster.

Celtic are now fourth in pool C with one round to go, while Rakaia are fourth in pool B. Mid Canterbury’s remaining

sides – Methven and Hampstead – have no show of making the top eight though, after both fell to losses on Saturday.

In pool B Methven fell behind early against Saracens in Rangiora, and although they fought their way back into the match, a late Saracens try sealed it for the home side, 27-22.

In pool A, Hampstead were at home on their club day to defending champions Waihora and lost 42-7.

Hampstead coach Shaun Bovey said his side knew they were in for a hard day at the office, but they were far from blown off the park.

“We actually stuck with them for most of the game, it didn’t really blow out until the very end,” Bovey said.

Game of the round Usually I’d agree with Steve Hansen that a draw is like kissing your sister, but the 31-all draw the Chiefs and the Highlanders fought out in Dunedin was so dramatic, dynamic, and gutsy, it was exhausting just to watch. Laumape on the burst is a sight for the ages.

A pity referee Damon Murphy missed it. In the course of awarding 11 consecutive penalties to the Brumbies late in the first half, rookie ref Murphy believed Blake Gibson had made a high tackle, when he was actually stripping a ball. The penalty led to a crucial try to James Slipper.

The people who run Sanzaar need to loosen the damn purse strings

Man plans, the gods laugh The prospect of checking out the combination of Jack Goodhue and Braydon Ennor in the midfield for the Crusaders was one of the most fascinating elements in the weekend. In reality, we only got a scratchy glimpse before Will Jordan had to leave the field injured, and the duo were back to playing at centre and wing. If they get a start against the Bulls in Pretoria next weekend, it may then be a case of being able to say we have seen the future of the All Black backline.

Four straight for He Kin Fly Well-travelled galloper He Kin Fly continued his recent purple patch of form when he notched his fourth win on end when taking out the Listed Daphne Bannan Memorial Great Easter Stakes (1400m) at Riccarton.

The Darci Brahma six-yearolds first two wins were recorded out of the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman stable in New Zealand before being sold to Hong Kong interests in 2016.

He Kin Fly raced five times in Hong Kong, recording a win in Class 3 company, before injury resulted in his return to New Zealand in 2018 where he made his way to South Island-based trainer, Neill Ridley.

Ridley has worked the oracle with the head-strong individual who has now won five times since joining his stable, with the promise of more to come based on Saturday’s showing.

Settled in a handy position by rider Lee Callaway, He Kin Fly travelled sweetly throughout as he cruised into contention approaching the home bend.

Callaway drove his mount to the front at the 150m and withstood the challenges of Prosecco and Kiwi Ida to register his eighth career victory.

Part-owner Bruce Harvey watched the race with wife Maureen at home and was delighted with both the performance and the ride of Callaway.

“That was a top ride as he had him in just the right place and made his run at just the right moment,” he said.

“He can be a hard horse to get to grips with and Lee has really formed a terrific association with him.

“We actually were underbidders on him as a weanling when Mark and Sarah Devcich bought him,” he said.

“We kept an eye on him through his early starts and when he went up to Hong Kong.

“I don’t think he was suited

by the harder tracks up there so when his connections retired him and were looking for a home we asked if we could take him and try him if he was sound and they agreed.

“We got him back, got him going and then sent him down to Neill.

“We thought the South Island tracks might suit him and that has proven correct as he has been going super ever since he went down there.”

Harvey admits his only regret was not being on-track to witness

Comeback unlikely

By Paul Lewis Ironic that celebrated swing coach David Leadbetter said this week that too many changes was the cause of Lydia Ko’s fall in form.

He should know. He engineered one of them.

To be fair to Leadbetter, his re-structuring of Ko’s swing to get more distance – is it really that necessary? – worked for quite some time as she strung together impressive results: World No 1 85 weeks in a row, two majors and 14 LPGA tournament wins.

So he has a platform of some stability from which to point out that, since then, Ko has won only a third of her earnings from the 2014-2016 period when Leadbetter was in charge of her swing.

Thing is, it didn’t last.

Her ball-striking fell away in 2016.

She decided to ditch Leadbetter and go to new coach Gary Gilchrist (replaced by the latest sacked coach, Ted Oh); Gilchrist came on board to re-engineer her swing closer to the one she started her career with, honed by her original coach, Guy Wilson.

At that time, she also changed clubs, from Callaway to PXG, with the new clubs producing a higher ball flight. She fired her new caddie. In six years, she’s had 11 in total.

So Leadbetter is undeniably right – too many changes.

But he was also part of that.

Certainly she hasn’t righted matters. In 2017, Ko was ranked 128th on the LPGA tour for driving distance. In 2019, she is in exactly the same spot – 128th (though she has been as high as 60).

Power isn’t the be-all and end-all, as all golfers know. But when Ko first came on the scene, only one opponent was hitting it past 270 yards off the tee. Now many fly it miles further than her. Even Ko’s legendary unflappability must be a bit messed up by that.

As Leadbetter pointed out, her greens-in-regulation stats have suffered.

In 2015, she was second on the LPGA tour;

in 2016 - 31st; in 2017- 48th and so far in 2019, 52nd.

That is a consistent decline; you can be 90th in driving accuracy but still have the talent to get the ball to the green even from tee shots that don’t find the fairway.

But Ko’s radar has been fuzzy for a while now; golf, the ultimate head game, may be messing with that head.

She has gone from No 1 in the world in 2016 to No 17 today, hardly a disaster, but a worrying path. She still has some good stats – she is 10th in the world at putting, a vital skill, and 14th in top 10s so far this year. So there is still hope, even if she had a poor first round this week in her first tournament since waving bye-bye to Oh. Perhaps the best analysis of swing changes comes from Brandel Chamblee, a former US PGA journeyman who won just one PGA tournament and is now a commentator on the Golf Channel.

He told the story of how the great Tom Watson (8 majors, 39 PGA tournament wins) successfully tweaked his swing to rid himself of problems that had plagued him for years. “…when players’ games sour, the deterioration happens not instantly but slowly and painfully. Ralph Guldahl won the US Open in 1937 and ‘38 and the Masters in 1939. By 1941, he had retired from the Tour. Guldahl, it is said, analysed away the magic while deconstructing his swing for an instruction book.”

He told the tale of a friend, a doctor and good golfer, who pestered him for tips on how to get better. Chamblee sent him to the best swing coach he knew. The coach watched the friend hit 10 shots, then said: “You can beat 99 per cent of the doctors in this world and that’s as good as you need to be.” Lesson over.

The friend was furious. He had driven 80 miles to be blown off, he felt. In fact, said Chamblee, one of the greatest teaching techniques had been employed: knowing when to leave well enough alone.

Will Ko regain former glories, a la Tiger Woods? Possibly – but the signs are not promising.

Wakanui back in action with commanding victory A disjointed start to the season didn’t impact on the Wakanui senior men’s hockey team on Saturday, as they came home from Timaru with a 6-1 win over Tainui to their names.

Sporting a flash new strip and happy to be back on the turf after two weekends of no hockey, Wakanui had a job to do early on, defending a couple of early Tainui penalty corners before really settling into the game.

Wakanui opened the scoring,

with Sam Moore putting the final Wakanui touch to the ball before Tainui finished it off, to make it 1-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Wakanui then went 2-0 up thanks to a Tim Groves wide angle shot that went across the goalie and into the far corner, before Tainui set about trying to get one back through some sustained periods of attack, but Wakanui’s Brad Going and Mitch Moore were up to the task on defence.

A late second quarter penalty corner for Wakanui was converted with a Hayden Sinclair drag flick, putting his side up at the break 3-0, and an early third quarter attack and a good Steve Blain cross found Scott Marshall on the left corner post to guide it in and make it 4-0.

Consistent pressure followed and after a failed penalty corner and a quick turnover to regain possession, a Jeremy Moore cross found Marshall on the left post

again, who happily made it 5-0.

Sam Bennett dragged in Wakanui’s sixth of the afternoon to end the third quarter, and while Wakanui spent more time on attack in the last quarter, they couldn’t convert a couple of late penalty corners awarded to them.

The final say in the game ended up going to Tainui.

As both teams began to tire, Tainui finally managed to find the back of the goal to see it end

6-1 in Wakanui’s favour.

Wakanui player/coach Sam Moore said it was a good win given Wakanui had started the game a bit slowly, possibly due in part to a few players having been up early in order to go duck shooting on the opening day of the season.

But, eventually they found their rhythm and picked up a good win heading into what was likely to be a much tougher battle against Cambridge in Ashburton this weekend.
