Ocean Waitokia is used to winning at the Gold Guitars, but this year she won bigger than ever.

The 16-year-old Ashburton College student took out the intermediate section at New Zealand’s renowned country music awards in Gore at the weekend.

“I was really, really shocked at the start,” she said.

“I’m still on cloud nine, my feet have barely touched the ground.”

What made the win even more special was having it awarded to her for her cover of Palomino Moon, written by fellow Mid Cantabrian Lynda Topp.

“It’s just really mellow and I like the

flow of it.”

The love song includes a melancholic yodel and yodelling is a skill both she and the Topp Twins excel at.

Ocean has competed at the Gold Guitars since the age of about 10 and previously won the vocal solo and open yodelling.

This time round she entered five intermediate sections, making the finals for all of them and winning four – vocal solo, country rock, traditional and New Zealand song.

It was in the latter section she sang Palomino Moon, her rendition captivating judges and earning her the overall intermediate title.

The prize package will see her wing-

ing her way to the country music mecca of Australia,Tamworth, for its annual awards, for which her airfares and accommodation are all covered. She has also been presented with a new Crafter guitar and awarded a recording contract.

She said her focus now will be fundraising so she can take her mentor and grandmother Linda Waitokia with her.

“She’s always been my number one supporter.”

Ocean is now waiting to see where her music takes her. She plans to study dentistry after leaving school, but is not discounting a career in performing.

“After Tamworth, I will see what happens,” she said.

Double fatal crash enquiries ongoing

Investigations are ongoing into a crash that claimed the lives of two people near Methven on Tuesday.

Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins said it was believed that the two people killed were originally from outside of the district and had recently moved into the area, Yesterday afternoon police were yet to release the names of the deceased, but it is understood that the next of kin have been notified.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of the Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road and Waimarama Road after a serious crash between a car and a truck at around 11.15am on Tuesday.

The two vehicles had come to rest further down the road from the intersection, but Jenkins said the crash occurred at the intersection.

“There was a bit of force involved in the accident,” he said.

“It will be up to the serious crash unit to determine the causes and what happened.”

The two people killed were travelling in the car, while the truck driver was transported to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said fire crews from Methven and Alford Forest spent two hours cutting the man out of the truck after he had be-

come heavily entrapped after the truck and trailer had come to a rest on its side.

and the Westpac rescue helicopter attended the scene, which later transported the truck driver to hospital.

Several police cars were seen

leaving Ashburton heading towards Methven with their lights and sirens activated, while Methven residents took to social media in an attempt to find out why a large number of police cars, ambulances and fire trucks were travelling through the town.

The crash brings the Ashburton District’s road toll for 2019 to seven.

On April 1, 30-year-old Chante Alissa Harmer, 19-month-old Te Awanuiarangi Shayelous-Jay Matenga Tapiata-Harmer and eight-month-old Wysdom Amara Francis Tony Jane Tapiata-Harmer were killed after the green Holden Astra they were travelling north along Hepburns Road was involved in a collision with a white Ford Ranger, which was heading west along Mitcham Road.

In March, 82-year-old Mary Rose Ashfield passed away in hospital from her injuries sustained in a two-car crash that occurred on the intersection of Coldstream Road and Junction Road.

On February 15, 79-year-old Ray Harraway was killed after the fertiliser truck he was driving crashed off the side of the Maronan Road bridge over the Hinds River.

■■POWER OUTAGE

Dark start to Wednesday for many in Ashburton

For thousands of people 10 minutes of their early morning rush to work or school was spent in darkness as power supplies were cut to Tinwald and parts of Ashburton.

The outage was caused by an unknown fault at the Kermode Street sub-station which is fed by a 66kv line. Power to the town is also supplied by two 33kv lines from the Elgin sub-station and if a fault occurs on the 66kv line

supply switches over to one of the Elgin lines.

Yesterday, however, Transpower was undertaking work on the grid exit point at Elgin where another 66kv line feeds into the two 33kv lines. To allow that routine maintenance work to be undertaken, one of the 33kv lines was taken out of service, EA Networks commercial manager Jeremy Adamson said.

Power was then supplied through one 33kv line and the 66kv line into Kermode Street,

but when the fault occurred at Kermode Street sub-station there was no spare line to pick up the feed, Adamson said.

Power was cut for three minutes – just after 7.30am and for seven minutes shortly before 8am.

In normal circumstances where all lines are available, there would have been an automatic switchover of supply if a fault occurred at Kermode Street, he said.

Because the cause of the outage was unknown, lines staff

had to physically check aboveground lines to make sure none were down and that the streets were safe before they restored supply.

The second outage was caused by an overload as supply was restored.

Work at the Elgin station has now been suspended until the cause of the Kermode sub-station fault is identified and repaired.

The power outages meant swimmers in the EA Networks pools had an interrupted exercise

session, with lifeguards asking everyone to leave the pools when the lights went out.

Visibility in the pool area became very poor and, as a matter of community safety, the right course of action was to clear the pools, council service delivery manager Neil McCann said.

It was a commonsense move, he said, because it was unclear how long the power would be out and for staff it would have been very difficult to see if anyone got into difficulties in the water.

Paula Bennett visits Mid Canty

Deputy leader of the National Party, Paula Bennett, tested out her sweet-tooth at the start of a whirlwind 24-hour visit to Mid Canterbury.

Bennett arrived in Ashburton with Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon on Wednesday, visiting a number of community organisations and local businesses ahead of further engagements today.

Bennett visited the Ashburton Work and Income office, Community House, and the community organisations working from there, and the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service.

The two MPs also visited New Zealand Dairy Collaborative’s canning plant in Ashburton, be-

fore heading to Midlands Apiaries.

Bennett was given a tour of the factory, her first time visiting a honey factory, before sampling some flavoured honeys and discussing trade and business.

This morning the Upper Harbour MP will host a women in business breakfast meeting with a number of local business owners at the Hotel Ashburton.

Bennett and Falloon will then be launching SuperBlues, a regular get-together for over 60s to hear from National MPs and other speakers.

Ashburton Trust looking for new leader

The Ashburton Trust will be looking for a new leader come October, with long serving board member and current chair Fay Watson signalling she will be standing down come local body election day.

After 22 years as part of the trust team as finance manager, board member and finally the trust’s chair, Watson said it was time to step aside.

“I’m pleased with where we’ve got to and I feel another three years isn’t for me. We have some great skills around the board table and I know others will step in with different skills,” she said.

Watson said she had seen the trust as an organisation, change significantly over the years as it reshaped and changed its business model.

Over the past two terms the board had developed a new business plan that saw it change from being both a landlord and the owner of several hospitality businesses to lease out those

Fay Watson businesses and become a landlord only. What had not changed, however, was its focus on returning money to the community, Watson said.

“It’s been quite a journey but I’m very happy with where it is at the moment and there are good

people around the board table to see it through.”

Watson joined the trust in 1986 as its financial adviser and said that had put her in the unique position of having seen the business from both sides, as an employee and as a board member.

In total she has spent 22 years with the trust, taking a several year break between her role as an employee and being elected to the board. In October she will have completed three terms as a board member and one as its chair.

Looking at the team of younger faces now around the board table Watson said she was confident the trust would be in good hands for the future.

Veteran board member Roger Paterson is unsure whether he will be seeking re-election.

“I’m in two minds, I haven’t made my decision, but my name will probably be there,” he said.

Paterson has been on the trust board 18 years and was first elected in 2001.

board deputy chair and will wrap up his second term in October.

He will be seeking another term around the board table and said he was committed to seeing through the major changes the organisation had been working through over the past six years.

“We’re 80-90 per cent there.

Change was necessary but it’s been a big learning curve for me,” he said.

After several years where the trust did not have the funds to complete maintenance work on its properties, it was good to see it in a position now where catch-up work from the past 10 years was being completed, Robertson said.

Rob Harnett will complete his first term as a board member in October and will probably be seeking re-election.

He said he’d particularly enjoyed the community side of the trust’s work and knowing that the money it gave in grants was making a difference to the many groups that benefited.

Volunteers did some great work in the community and in spots

clubs and it was good to be part of an organisation that gave money in grants to help with that work.

Kieran Breakwell was another new board member at the last election and said he’d enjoyed his first term and was committed to seeking re-election.

He applauded the previous board for having the foresight to develop the trust’s new business model and said it was a good and positive experience to be part of a team working to see this through.

“It all looks very positive, all credit to them.”

The current board worked well as a team, Breakwell said.

Tim Silva is the trust board’s newest member, and was nominated to take the place of Jim Lischner who retired one year into this term.

Silva said he had enjoyed his time on the board and was committed to seeking re-electon in October.

“We’re in an exciting, transitional phase and we’re only partway through, there’s still plenty of work to do,” he said.

Fresh faces join young professionals group

Are you a young professional stuck trying to find like-minded people in Mid Canterbury? Look no further than the Mid Canterbury Young Professionals.

President Sam Ruck said the group was still going strong, with a few fresh-faced new members joining the committee to take the group forward.

“A lot of people from the founding committee have moved on, so we have some new people onboard now,” he said.

The group has a committee of six, with a membership of between 60 and 70.

Ruck said the group holds regular social and business development events for the group which is mainly comprised of young professionals who work in the agricultural sector.

“We have one this weekend with a young guy who has a farm out Hinds way and he has a paddock racer, so we are going to take everyone out for a spin and then have a barbecue afterwards,” he said.

“We try to run a couple of social events and business development events where we might try and talk about something like resilience.

“If we get someone in, like a multi-sport athlete to talk about that, it might only apply to some of the group, but the social

Ruck said the group was a great place for young professionals who were moving into the district to find their feet and make connections within the community, even if they moved on from the group after a couple of years once they felt settled.

The group’s events are also open to non-members, though anyone wishing to take part would have an increased charge.

Ruck said many of the social events had people that would come along, despite not being a member of the group, which was not an issue.

EMC under no pressure to move

With Ashburton’s town centre i-SITE building now on borrowed time, the future location of two businesses hoping to call it home hangs in the balance.

One of those is an information hub that planned to establish a base in the building and the other its current tenant Experience Mid Canterbury.

Negotiations wound on for some time between the building’s owner, the Ashburton District Council and the two parties. Two decisions have now been made – the building will be sold and

moved and the two groups will not be working side by side in that building.

Last week district councillors agreed they should only offer the hub group a one-plus-one lease on the building rather than the longer lease the group had requested. After that decision for the group Tony Todd said the oneplus-one lease and the council’s planned information centre in the new civic centre could make the hub’s plans untenable.

The council is now in the process of arranging a meeting with the information hub team, to see whether they still wanted the

building with a shorter lease in place, chief executive Hamish Riach said.

While there had been discussions about the two groups working collaboratively in the i-SITE building an agreed position could not be reached, he said.

The hub group had indicated it was not aware the council would be establishing an information centre in the new civic centre and library, but this had been made clear from last year, Riach said.

“It should not come as a surprise to anyone.”

Experience Mid Canterbury board chairman James Urquhart

said his organisation had been happy to work with the hub group, but said the co-operative arrangement had come unstuck when the group opted not to show its business plan to the council.

“We tried to work alongside them and they were kind enough to let us stay in the building, but they still didn’t show their cards.

There’s no point in having two businesses trying to grab the same money, it just wouldn’t work.

“We made a decision as a board for them to have the building and we’d find somewhere else to move to.”

That the council intended to establish an information centre in its new building was no secret, Urquhart said, it had been part of the plan from day one.

With the i-SITE building having only a short-term life on its East Street site, Experience Mid Canterbury would be looking for a new home, however, it will be under no pressure from the council to move if the information hub does not proceed with its plans to lease the building.

The building will be sold and moved off site as part of the council’s plans for the redevelopment of Ashburton’s town centre.

Caught driving while disqualified A driver caught an hour after having his licence taken off him had his disqualification extended further in the Ashburton District Court this week.

Stephen Francis Osullivan, 23, was caught driving while disqualified on Cox Street just one hour after the court ordered his disqualification period.

“So you completely disregarded the court and now you are facing almost 12 months without your licence,” judge Sally O’Brien said.

She convicted and fined Osullivan $400, ordered him to pay court costs of $130, and disqualified him for six months.

Others to appear in front of Judge O’Brien: Julianna Mary Coldicott, 44, was fined $430 and ordered to pay court costs of $130 and disqualified from driving for six months after pleading guilty to drink driving.

Coldicott returned a level of 478 micrograms per litre of breath after being stopped on Forest Drive, Methven, on May 3.

Abbey Taukamo was fined $430 and ordered to pay court costs of $130 and disqualified from driving for six months, after pleading guilty to an alcohol breath level

of 477 micrograms per litre of breath.

Matangaro Tuaine was fined $520 ordered to pay court costs of $130 and disqualified from driving for six months after being caught at a routine stop by police with an alcohol breath level of 574 micrograms per litre of breath.

Christopher Michael Poole, 28, pleaded guilty to driving while his licence was suspended on May 22. He was fined $350, ordered to pay court costs of $130, and disqualified from driving for six months, with his disqualification period to begin following the suspension period.

Benjamin Galland, 22, was fined $300 and ordered to pay court costs of $130 and disqualified for six months after pleading guilty to driving while suspended on April 25 on Princes Street.

Billie Devene Smith, 24, was suspended from driving on April 30, but then caught driving on May 1.

“So you clearly took no notice of the suspension that was served on you,” Judge O’Brien said.

Smith was convicted and fined $200, ordered to pay court costs of $130 and disqualified for six months.

Far north battered by wild weather NZME Two tornadoes – one strong enough to rip off the roof of a home – hit properties north of Auckland yesterday.

A Fire & Emergency NZ (FENZ) spokesman said fire crews had discovered 20 homes in the Coopers Beach area have been damaged, mostly superficially. Two homes closest to State Highway 10 had been badly damaged with roofs torn off and multiple windows smashed.

They have been declared uninhabitable by a Far North District Council building inspector.

Their occupants were packing up what they can and security guards were to be posted until the properties could be made secure.

A second “mini tornado” struck a shed in Kaiwaka, in the Kaipara area, emptying the shed’s contents.

Civil Defence officials are going door to door to check everyone is okay.

At least two people had been injured.

A mini tornado has also hit Kaiwaka, about 100km north of Auckland.

Truck driver Craig says he witnessed the event, after first noticing a flash of lightning.

“I just saw this big tree go across the road in front of me.

It was literally a flying tree that landed in the middle of the road,” he said.

He said the local fire brigade cleared the debris from the road.

Bad weather is battering much of the North Island and Air New Zealand also warned travellers there were likely to be disruptions to flights in and out of Wellington yesterday afternoon.

The live lightning tracker on weatherwatch.co.nz recorded hundreds of strikes, from Northland through to Auckland and around the Hauraki, Thames-Coromandel area and the Bay of Plenty.

Police praise community NZME Members of the public, including one who allowed a woman and her children to hide in his property from an aggressive man, have been praised by police.

Police received several 111 calls from witnesses reporting an aggressive man threatening a mother and children on Monday in Maoribank, Upper Hutt.

One man allowed them into his property to keep them safe.

The callers described what was happening and where, which helped police get there quickly, Upper Hutt public safety team Sergeant Sam Mercer said.

“When police arrived the man continued to act aggressively, then proceeded to resist arrest.

“During this time several members of the public offered assistance to the police staff who were arresting the man.

“This included neighbours, and a rubbish-truckie who was driving by.

“While no physical assistance was required, the officers appreciated that the community had their backs, and were prepared to step up if needed.”

More police were quickly on the scene, and the man was taken into custody safely.

Mercer said this was a great example of the public standing up for vulnerable members of the community.

“It’s great to see the community stepping up and saying that family harm is not okay,” he said.

“It’s also a great reminder for our police staff that our community supports us in our efforts to keep people safe.”

The man has been charged with threatening behaviour and resisting arrest and appeared in the Hutt Valley District Court this week.

She said no one was in the house at the time and believed it was a holiday home.

She described the house as having “major” roof damage.

Since the storm, police had driven around to affected areas to make sure all the residents were okay, including herself.

Another resident said the winds had since dropped and there was blue sky. “[It’s] blue sky at the moment and as still as anything,” she said.

One resident said: “Roof off.

Decking rails come off. Tramp upside down. Bushes ripped out.”

Another resident wrote on Facebook that their neighbour’s caravan had been flipped by the tornado.

MetService had earlier warned of tornadoes in northern and eastern areas and squally thunderstorms were expected across Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula.

According to MetService, if any tornadoes do occur, they would be localised.

Bennett calls for Makhlouf stand down NZME National deputy leader Paula Bennett is calling for Treasury Secretary Gabriel Makhlouf to be stood down while he is being investigated over whether he misled the Government.

But State Service Commissioner Peter Hughes has rejected that, saying this is not a situation that warrants that.

On Tuesday Hughes announced an inquiry into Makhlouf’s advice to Finance Minister Grant Robertson, the basis for the advice, and his decision to refer the unauthorised access to Treasury’s website to the police.

Deputy State Services Commissioner John Ombler will lead the investigation, and Makhlouf will continue to work while it was being carried out. Bennett said that was “extraordinary”.

“They’re serious allegations and serious issues, and in such circumstances one would normally be stood down while that investigation takes place.

The GCSB advice to the Treasury was that its computer system had not been compromised, and this was provided before the police were called in and before Makhlouf released a statement saying the Treasury had been “hacked”.

In brief Bumpy BOP Bay of Plenty residents got a shaky start to winter with just under 100 earthquakes around north Taupo since Tuesday afternoon. Between 4.30pm and 9.30pm on Tuesday, just under 100 earthquakes were registered in a swarm about 2530km north of Taupo. The largest of these quakes was magnitude 3.1 at a depth of 4km which was felt and reported 181 times. A swarm is a sequence of earthquakes which strike in a short period of time, located close to each other.

Flight delays Some regional flights around the country were delayed yesterday due to bad weather. At least one flight to Great Barrier Island was delayed yesterday morning. Air New Zealand also issued warnings to travellers flying to Rotorua and Tauranga yesterday, saying they could face disruptions due to the weather conditions.

Teen, dog mauled A teenage girl has been injured and a small dog mauled in alleged attacks by a large dog in a suburban Napier street on Tuesday afternoon. Emily Kelly-Lowe, 15, was taken to a medical centre for treatment and 13-year-old family jack russell-corgi Mozart was taken to the vet for likely surgery. The offending dog was impounded.

Emily returned home later in the afternoon with medication to prevent infection to a bite on her leg, but Mozart remained at the vet with bites and tears about the stomach area, King said. – NZME

Sky Tower hit Yesterday’s stormy weather produced a strike of lightning that managed to hit the tip of Auckland’s Sky Tower. The lightning strike was caught on camera by Linley Kerr at Alaska Construction in Freemans Bay just before 1pm yesterday. As the rain pours, video shows the lightning lighting up the sky and projecting straight down on the tower. Straight after the strike, a massive thunder clap can be heard booming through the sky. – NZME

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment website says that an employee can be stood down if their presence at work could compromise an investigation by, for example, tampering with evidence.

Another reason is for health and safety, such as if the employee was alleged to have bullied someone.

National Party leader Simon Bridges has called for Makhlouf to resign for implying that the party had hacked into the Treasury’s website to obtain confidential Budget 2019 information.

National staffers had simply used the website’s search function, and police have said that nothing illegal appeared to have taken place.

iHeartMedia has announced the line-up for the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Festival. Alicia Keys, Chance The Rapper and Miley Cyrus are just some of the stars joining the jam-packed line-up of the Las Vegas festival in September.

Taking place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 20 and 21, the festival will be broadcast live on iHeartMedia radio stations.

In August, listeners who download the iHeartRadio app will have the chance to win a trip to Las Vegas to attend the festival.

Golfers shot at Whangaparaoa Golf Club members are on high alert after four players were shot at while on the course last Friday afternoon.

Numerous shots were fired at the foursome while they were out on the fourth hole at around 4pm.

Nobody was hurt but the men were “a bit shocked”. Pellet holes were visible in the sign for the fifth hole. More than 30 shots were fired.

Pell appeals convictions

The most senior Roman Catholic found guilty of child sex abuse began his court appeal yesterday against his convictions on charges of molesting two choirboys in an Australian cathedral more than 20 years ago.

Cardinal George Pell, 77, wore a cleric’s collar as he appeared for the Victoria state Court of Appeal hearing being heard by three judges yesterday and today.

A jury unanimously convicted Pell in December of orally raping a 13-year-old choirboy and indecently dealing with the boy and the boy’s 13-yearold friend in Melbourne’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral in the late 1990s. Pell had become archbishop of Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city, only months before.

Court orders for months had prevented publication of the details of that trial and an earlier trial on similar charges that had ended in September with a deadlocked jury.

Pell was sentenced in March to six years in prison. He is held in special protective custody because paedophiles are regarded as being at higher risk of harm from other prisoners.

While Pell remains Australia’s highest-ranking Catholic, the Vatican is conducting its own investigation into the convictions of Pope Francis’ former finance minister.

In a little more than a year, the pope has admitted he made “grave errors” in Chile’s worst case of cover-up, Pell was convicted of abuse, a French cardinal was convicted of failing to report a pedophile, and a third cardinal, former US church leader Theodore McCarrick, was defrocked after a Vatican investigation determined he molested children and adults.

Pell’s lawyer Bret Walker told the three judges the main ground for appeal was that the jury could not have found Pell guilty beyond reasonable

doubt on the evidence.

In written submissions, Pell’s lawyers argue that more than 20 prosecution witnesses who had an official role in the Sunday Mass in 1996, after which the then-Archbishop Pell molested the boys in a rear room over five or six minutes, gave evidence that the offences did not or could not have occurred.

“This evidence constituted a catalogue of at least 13 solid obstacles in the path of a conviction,” the submissions said.

“No matter what view was taken of the complainant as a witness, it was simply not open to a jury to accept his words beyond reasonable doubt,” they added.

Professor Jeremy Gans, who heads Melbourne Law School and is an expert on Victoria criminal law, said Pell had a strong chance of winning the appeal on the ground that the verdicts were “unreasonable”.

One of Pell’s victims died of a heroin overdose in 2014 at the age of 31, apparently without making any accusation of abuse. State law prevents victims of sexual assault from being publicly identified.

If the appeal judges rule that the verdict is unsafe on the evidence, Pell would be acquitted and would not have to be retried. But Gans suspects the case could end up in the High Court, Australia’s final appeals court.

“I think he’s likely to win on the unsafe verdict ground,” Gans said.

Pell’s lawyers have also said they will argue that the trial judge erred in not allowing them to use a video graphic in their closing address.

They said the graphic would demonstrate that the crimes that were alleged would have been impossible.

A third ground details an alleged “fundamental irregularity” in the trial in that Pell was not arraigned – asked if he pleaded guilty or not guilty – in front of the chosen jury.

A victory on either of those grounds could result in Pell being retried. But he would likely be freed on bail until his third trial.

“I can imagine you in the garden having tea with Janey and Anne getting ready to put them to bed,” wrote Skinner, who was killed the day after D-Day.

“Although I would give anything to be back with you, I have not yet had any wish at all to back down from the job we have to do.”

The observances will conclude President Donald Trump’s state visit to Britain, which the 93-year-old queen hosted. Elizabeth will be accompanied by her son, Prince Charles, at the event.

The focus shifts to France, where commemorations will be held at simple military cemeteries near the Normandy beaches where Allied troops landed and died.

Surviving the death of technology F

or most people their relationship with technology is a bit like a relationship with their significant other – when it’s good, life is easy; when it’s not, it feels like your world’s falling down around your ears.

And, like a good and long standing relationship, it’s easy to take your until-death-do-us part partnership with technology for granted. Until it goes horribly wrong, and then you feel let down, your world stops turning and it becomes impossible to do the most ordinary of jobs.

Yesterday technology and the Ashburton Guardian came close to divorce.

It was about to be death to what, until early yesterday

morning, had been a happy and harmonious coupling. Sure there were moments over the years where the technology side of the partnership let the human side down, but those failings were usually small and quickly repaired. It was easy to forgive.

Until yesterday.

Imagine arriving in a workplace only to find your tools of trade had been rendered unusa-

ble, where something as simple as making a landline phone call was impossible, where all of your contacts were locked in your computer – which was unable to access the company’s server, and where the internet no longer ruled.

It’s a test many human-technology relationships have faced and after a short time peace – and service – have been restored. Not so at the Guardian.

Early morning, staff arrived to a technology-free zone. Early afternoon it was still that way.

Landlines had been restored, cellphones were running red hot but the internet and our in-house server were missing in action.

It’s a story that had a somewhat happy ending. Service resumed mid-afternoon but the relationship is still somewhat strained. Forgiveness will be some time in coming.

What the sad saga of the technology-less Guardian offices does, is highlight just how much technology now rules our lives.

We take it for granted that whatever we want will be available at our fingertips. And when it’s not, we’re stumped, we’re lost, we simply cease to function.

Life when technology is doing what it should is simple. We know where to go to find the information we need, we flick off emails at will, text or use Facebook, Snapchat or Insta-

gram to communicate.

Voice-to-voice, face-to-face communication is out of vogue.

Phone numbers in an index book, paper clippings, making notes in a diary, writing appointments on a calendar, they’re part of the past. But those simple, old fashioned ways of doing things never failed. They were – and still are – beyond the reach of the technology gremlins.

If yesterday’s nightmare on Burnett Street did anything, except fray tempers, it did hammer home how important it is that, no matter how much you embrace technology, the stuff that’s been consigned to the past can still save the day.

ast week marked the first Wellbeing Budget, and this government placed the wellbeing of New Zealanders firmly at the heart of what we do.

We’d already seen some prebudget announcements; investments in the eradication of domestic violence, more support available for children growing up in State care, and changes to NCEA – including the scrapping of the fees – which will ease living costs for many Mid Canterbury parents.

Fixing long term problems needs fresh thinking and energy.

Under Jacinda Adern’s leadership we’re running surpluses, paying off debt, and addressing critical problems.

We have a clear plan and we are getting on with the job. The Wellbeing Budget has shown that.

Everyone knows somebody who’s affected by mental health challenges. If someone needs help, they should get help.

That’s why we’re taking mental health seriously in the Wellbeing Budget, by investing

in much-needed support for mental health and addiction issues in every community across New Zealand.

This is vital here in Ashburton.

I receive emails and phone calls from farmers affected by mycoplasma bovis and parents concerned about their children.

We have fantastic people and local agencies helping our people, but the truth is that there just hasn’t been enough funding for them to keep up.

This new support means every New Zealander can access free and immediate help, when and where they need it.

For some, it might mean telling their GP about having a tough time or feeling depressed, then getting help from a mental

health worker right there at the GP’s clinic, at your local community health centre, or elsewhere.

For people with greater needs, it might mean a series of appointments with a mental health worker, an ongoing relationship with a support worker, and introductions to specialist services as a person needs them.

We’re doing things differently, because everyone knows that preventing a crisis is better than cleaning up after one.

This budget invests in early intervention, because in the long run it saves people pain, and saves the public money.

Of course, it takes time to roll out a programme this transformative.

We need to train and hire the medical professionals who’ll do the work, we need to make sure the facilities are available, and we need to let everyone know where to come for help.

That’s why this programme will be expanded, region by region, over the next few years until it covers everyone.

The government’s investment in mental health, and also the changes we’re making to make schooling cheaper, and helping the homeless, are only part of what the government is doing for people right here in Mid Canterbury.

With this government, Mid Canterbury is on the move. By taking mental health seriously, we’ll unlock even more potential right here in our region.

And we’re doing it all while managing the books responsibly, growing the economy and creating jobs across the country.

I’m proud to be part of Jacinda Ardern’s government, which is tackling New Zealand’s longterm challenges, including the huge challenge of protecting our mental health.

Farmers under pressure – Feds leader

Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers new president David Clark says the district’s farmers are under huge pressure from mycoplasma bovis.

Clark was amongst district leaders to meet yesterday with Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor.

As at yesterday morning, there were six active infected properties in the district, with 17 under a notice of direction restricting movement and 72 under surveillance. Nineteen properties that have had the cattle disease have been cleared and 67 notices of direction have been revoked.

Clark said Federated Farmers was working hard locally to bring about improvements in the way MPI was dealing with farmers. It was a very stressful time for the farmers involved.

MPI’s response initially had been a shambles, he said, though he did agree with the decision to eradicate.

He said farmers were also worried about impending changes in the national policy statement for freshwater and how it would impact them. They were already improving their operations to reduce the amount of nitrates that could leach into waterways and using water more efficiently.

Farmers felt like the environmental goal posts were continually moving.

“It is a bit daunting, the importance of the role, but it is an opportunity to give back to an industry that I love.”

The Clarks grow cereal crops, herbage seed, vegetable seeds and run 1000 breeding ewes, and last year finished 10,000 lambs.”

Embracing technology and being prepared to change has been a central theme in their lives.

“We are very self-contained and do everything ourselves.”

Clark said he was looking forward to a more balanced debate about farming and its impact on the environment. New Zealand farmers ran some of the most sustainable operations in the world and were leading operators, so they needed to make sure their stories were heard.

A recent trip to Oregon for an international herbage conference had confirmed those beliefs, especially after seeing the environmental impact of continuously growing nuts, rice and tomatoes in naturally dry valleys.

By contrast, New Zealand arable farmers grew crops in rotation and used livestock as part of a holistic system.

“It is my belief our sustainability, our agronomy and our use of technology is as good as anyone in the world. Can we do better?

Absolutely we can and that is what we are doing.”

With winter now starting to bite, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is reminding pastoral livestock farmers of their animal welfare responsibilities, whether animals are kept at home or sent off-farm to graze.

“This time of year can be challenging for farmers, with wet and muddy conditions increasing risks to the welfare of their livestock,” Kate Littin, manager animal welfare said.

“Many farmers, particularly in Southland and Otago, choose to break feed stock on crops over the winter months. It’s a great way to provide food for animals and protect pastures but does require careful planning and good stockmanship to avoid welfare risks that wet weather can bring.

“New Zealand’s codes of animal welfare require livestock to have access to areas free of surface water and mud, and appropriate shelter from adverse weather.

“Animals will refuse to lie down on wet ground and can then become stressed, stop eating, and are more susceptible to lameness.”

There are a number of ways farmers can mitigate risks to animal welfare over winter.

“If there is a spell of extreme weather or prolonged wet conditions, you may need to move your stock off the crop to drier land, and you should plan for this possibility – having a ‘plan B’ is the key.

“Clean drinking water must be available for animals at all times. Owners are still responsible for the welfare of their stock while they are off-farm for winter grazing and should check on the conditions, including their access to shelter and water.

“When transitioning from pasture to crop, and back again, stock can be negatively affected. Ensuring you follow a gradual transition plan when moving your animals will prevent issues.”

MPI recommends talking to your vet for help with planning and any animal health concerns. Resources to help farmers with their winter grazing management are available online from DairyNZ and Beef+Lamb New Zealand.

Consent given for farm sale

A $413.3m deal to sell 155ha of Canterbury farmland to a co-operative of about 3000 Danish seed growers has got state consent.

The Overseas Investment Office has released its decisions for April and in that is clearance for Denmark’s DLF Seeds to buy the rural land from 50 per cent-Singaporean-owned PGG Wrightson.

The deal would see the introduction of “genomic screening technology into New Zealand”.

“This will allow grasses to be screened on the basis of their genetic potential and means that grasses that are likely to have desirable traits can be selected before field trials are carried out. This may save years carrying out field trials on grasses that are unlikely to perform well,” the office said.

The Danish seeds and plant breeding company owned by the co-operative has a small presence in New Zealand through its subsidiary DLF Seeds, the clearance said.

PGW Seeds is the seeds business of local agricultural company PGG Wrightson and its PGW Seeds is involved in developing, growing and distributing proprietary and non-proprietary grass, forage seeds and other seeds, it said.

Scholarships for Kiwi farmers to work on Danish farms, around $12.5m in extra exports, investments in special harvesters to measure quality and yield and the establishment of a new seeds multiplication business in New Zealand were benefits cited.

The land is on Bennets and Springs roads in the Selwyn District.

Global food and beverage business Danone Asia Pacific Holdings [44 per cent American and 20 per cent French] can buy 49 per cent of Yashili New Zealand Dairy Co which has a Pokeno operation. Danone already has about 30 per cent of Yashili, the OIO said. The amount of money involved was suppressed.

An iconic Arthur’s Pass station got consent for another deal with a neighbouring and equally famous place: American-owned Flock Hill Holdings can buy 135ha of adjacent land from two New Zealanders for $400,000.

“Flock Hill Holdings seeks to acquire a leasehold interest in approximately 135ha of adjacent land through a boundary adjustment. Flock Hill Holdings has an existing leasehold interest in approximately 14,000ha of land on Flock Hill Station. The adjacent land that it seeks to acquire is part of Craigieburn Station, another high country station,” the decision said.

CDL Land New Zealand, 53 per cent Singaporean-owned, got consent to buy 8.4ha of land at Arataki Road for a secret sum from Kiwis Carolyn Wallis, Christine and James Hawley and Martin Speeden. CDL plans to develop about 120 sections, then sell them.

Crush protection a worthwhile option Federated Farmers is on board with WorkSafe’s decision to “strongly recommend” installation of a crush protection device (CPD) on quad bikes used for work purposes.

“We support WorkSafe’s policy clarification. For some time Federated Farmers has been saying CPDs, or roll over protection as it used to be called, can be a very useful injury prevention option in many – but not all – farm settings,” Feds President Katie Milne said.

“There is still some debate about CPDs, including from quad bike manufacturers who say they are unsafe, and those who say the device itself can cause injury in some circumstances.

“But, like WorkSafe, Federated Farmers believes there is now enough evidence from credible sources to say that farmers should at least be considering Crush Protection Devices.

“Of all quad deaths about 90 per centre are the result of asphyxiation as a result of the bike pinning the rider in a roll over incident. The net result of greater use of CPDs is likely to be positive,” Milne said.

Quad bikes are vital tools on farms and in many situations they are either the only, or the safest, vehicle for the job, she said.

Stats NZ decision stuns tourist groups NZME Tourist groups are stunned by Stats NZ’s decision to ditch monthly accommodation figures and say the decision could harm the industry.

Stats has announced that the Commercial Accommodation Monitor (CAM) will be stopped from September due to cost pressure.

One tourism industry leader puts the decision down to a dispute between two government agencies.

Regional Tourism NZ says it is “shocked’’ at the news its main source of tourism numbers data is to be scrapped just weeks after the government announced a commitment to better research for the industry.

“It is unbelievable that only weeks after Ministers Kelvin Davis and Eugene Sage announced a strong commitment to improving an understanding of the industry through data, MBIE is ditching a key source of information without offering an immediate replacement,” said the organisation’s chief executive, Charlie Ives.

His group represents 30 tourism regions and said while the monitor wasn’t perfect it has been the only information the industry has on

the volume of both domestic and international visitors around the country.

He said the government had said it wanted to deepen understanding of regional tourism.

“Instead they’ve done the opposite. And what is even more distressing is that a number of tourism industry organisations put considerable resource into supporting a comprehensive review of the CAM in 2015, which came up with some

NZME Vodafone NZ is increasing the daily cost of its roaming plan from $5 a day to $7 a day from July 11.

The telco said that, at the same time, it is increasing the number of countries covered by the deal from 70 to more than 100.

The move follows a $3 price rise across all of Vodafone’s broadband plans in the New Year, which it said was the result of accumulated price rises by wholesaler Chorus.

Some customers will also be able to get a refund if they don’t like the roaming increase.

A statement on Vodafone NZ’s website says, “If you are on a mobile plan governed by the Consumer Terms, and believe that Daily Roaming for $7 a day has a detrimental impact on you, you are entitled to cancel your contract without incurring an early termination charge. If you are paying off a device on an Interest Free Payment, that device will still need to be repaid as per your Interest Free terms.

“If you are on any other plan and

believe Daily Roaming for $7 a day has a material detrimental impact on you, you are entitled to cancel your contract but you must pay an early termination charge. You are also required to pay the outstanding amount on any device you are paying off on Interest Free as per your Interest Free terms.”

Vodafone is in the process of selling its New Zealand operations to Infratil and Brookfield.

The telco said last month that its branding and global roaming and other perks of being part of an international group would remain under its new ownership through a licence fee arrangement.

Roaming will now cost more from around the time the deal is expected to close, but a spokeswoman told media the price rise is not related to the sale in any way.

So why the price increase?

The spokeswoman said, “Vodafone launched Daily Roaming over five years ago and since then have made numerous improvements to the service, including expanding it from 23 destinations to now over 100. Included in the latest round of new destinations are Vietnam and Cambodia, which are hugely popular with Kiwis.

“We have not increased the price since launching the service despite mobile data usage having tripled and the costs to Vodafone being widely variable across regions. We have retained one fixed price for every destination for the sheer simplicity of it for customers. They don’t have any set-up hassles and don’t need to try to predict their usage by buying bundles. We believe our roaming offer provides an easy-touse, highly competitive service for our customers.”

Dairy product prices fell at the Global Dairy Trade auction, sliding a second consecutive time, as whole milk powder continued its retreat.

The GDT price index dropped 3.4 per cent from the previous auction two weeks ago. The average price was $US3,423 a tonne, compared with $US3,414 a tonne two weeks ago. Some 19,874 tonnes of product was sold, up from 15,510 tonnes two weeks ago.

Whole milk powder fell 1.5 per cent to $US3,138 a tonne.

At the latest GDT auction, cheddar plunged 14 per cent to $US3,950 a tonne, while butter sank 10.3 per cent to $US4,805 a tonne.

Butter milk powder dropped 10.1 per cent to $US2,807 a tonne, while anhydrous milk fat retreated 5.7 per cent to $US5,752 a tonne.

Skim milk powder gave up 4 per cent to $US2,436 a tonne. Bucking the trend, rennet casein climbed 4.2 per cent to $US7,201 a tonne, while lactose added 0.4 per cent

to $US897 a tonne.

For sweet whey powder, no product was offered or sold, or no price was published for the last event, or on both of the two previous events.

The New Zealand dollar last traded at 66.14 US cents as of 3.15pm in New York, compared with 65.98 US cents at the previous close in Wellington.

There were 107 winning bidders out of 148 participating at the 13-round auction. The number of registered bidders was 526, up from 524 at the previous auction.

■■ Fry the bacon until it is slightly brown. Add the whole shallots, baby potatoes, bay leaves and fry off until everything is coating in the bacon fat.

■■ De-glaze with white wine. Place the chicken to the middle of the casserole dish making sure shallots and potatoes aren’t under the chicken so they can get

golden and crispy while roasting. Dot in herbs, lemon and garlic.

■■ Cover with the lid and transfer to the oven. Cook for 1 hour.

■■ Take the lid off and cook uncovered for a further 30 minutes or until the chicken and vegetables are golden.

■■ Sprinkle with salt and pepper and serve with salad greens.

Simon has been contributing to the public understanding of science through writing, exhibitions, lectures and advising on natural history documentaries for almost 30 years.

Writing about things that creep and crawl has long been a passion, his popular children’s book titles include I Am An Insect; Biggest Littlest Spiders, his latest book aimed at 9-12 year-old readers Why Is That Lake So Blue? a guide to New Zealand’s natural world was recently named as one of Storylines Notable Books of 2019.

His books make science fun .... absolutely alive.

Simon firmly believes that people should follow their passion in life.

At the age of 7 he knew he wanted to be a zoologist, and was encouraged by his parents to pursue a bug’s eye view of the world.

An uncle inspired him in his passion too “and from him I learned that bees don’t think in English, when I thought they did”.

With exuberance, wit and humour, and much passion, his illustrations and cartoons Simon took his audience along on the subject Science, Junk Science and How to tell the Difference.

Hinds Women’s Institute The Hinds WI met for their May meeting in the Hinds Co-operating Church Hall on a sunny Mid Canterbury winter’s afternoon.

President Rosa welcomed everyone to the meeting and this was followed by the Aspirations and the Ode. The usual practice of apologies received, previous minutes read and confirmed, financial report read, correspondence received, and general business discussed, followed.

Our guest speaker for the afternoon, Carol Gunn, was then introduced.

What a busy and amazing woman Carol is not only a teacher, polytech instructor, commercial grower (along with her husband) of daffodils and peony roses, musical choir conductor and singer but also a JP, a funeral celebrant and a marriage celebrant.

Weddings are special and personalised to the couple’s wishes, be it the venue, the style of service or any of the other important marriage arrangements.

Through her celebrant work she has met many interesting people, seen many beautiful gardens, churches, venues and landscapes.

A funeral service is one she is also honoured to conduct to help a family in their time of grief.

Services may have a religious content – or no religious content – and she will guide a family if it is needed.

Carol gave us an interesting and informative talk; she answered questions freely and was sincerely thanked and presented with a gift voucher.

Run and Walk Ashburton Members were busy both walking and running in the evenings during the week.

Tuesday evening five runners and two walkers set a good pace covering just over 6km.

Rob Beale is walking very strongly which tempted Alison Conway to walk the first 3km lap with him; starting off ahead of the runners making them work hard to catch them. Whether trying to catch or chase it sets a good challenge to all.

Three walkers ventured out on Wednesday evening on their customary town route all walking strongly, and then on Thursday evening three runners did a VO2 max session of 6 x 1km repeats with impressive times 4:06, 4:06, 4:03, 3:56, 3:59, and 4:01.

No planned weekend club event with Queen’s Birthday, however we did have members competing near and far in events.

Winter certainly made its arrival felt for those competing at the Christchurch Marathon.

Judith Crozier is one amazing walker taking out second place in her age group, and second female home in the Half Marathon Walk in a time of 2:45:03.

The runners results were: Marathon (42km) Graeme Wall 4:00:26; Half Marathon (21km) Brian Goodes 1:45:43; 10km Run: Tam Grant 50:49; Ian Broadbelt 48:37; Sarah Hewson 45:32.

Across the Tasman where temperatures were slightly warmer, Lori Rusbatch competed in the Brisbane Half Marathon Walk finishing third in her age category in a very impressive time of 2:48:53 - well done to all of you.

Target Shooting Mid Canterbury Queen’s Birthday is supposed to be a holiday but the number of open cham-

pionships made it otherwise for target rifle shooters.

This last weekend we had representatives at Marlborough, Nelson, Saxton and North Otago champs.

Shania Harrison-Lee and Sandy Bennett were both worthy reps with Shania 3rd in the Master Grade, 3rd in the top 10 at Marlborough, 3rd Master and 2nd in top 10 at Nelson and then 2nd Master grade at Saxton.

Sandy picked up 5th Master grade at Nelson.

Meanwhile to the south Bill Rankin 1st C grade Andrew McKenzie 3rd C grade and Charlotte McKenzie 1st D grade both Bill and Charlotte picking up marksman badges.

On the home front a lot has been happening as well, attendances were down while members travelled home from other parts and sickness seems to be rife among younger members.

However Nina McKenzie asserted her dominance at Coronation with a 195.6, closely followed by our most southerly member Graham Hunter on 194.6.

Big pluses this week for the Phoenix club where a number of personal bests were recorded and some very solid scoring from senior members of this club.

Special reference to Madison Tourle, Aimee Harris, Katie Ellis, Amelia Swan, Fiona McFall and Jack McIntosh.

Aimee, Katie and Fiona are all new seniors who have settled into a patch of very steady scores while Madison, Amelia and Jack are very rapidly improving juniors.

It was a pleasure for me this week to attend the Phoenix club night and see the hard working team of T.J. Stewart, Andrew McKenzie, Michaela and Emma Smith and Bill Rankin overseeing a very smooth operation.

Help from an interested parent Sharon Tourle in organising equipment was evident as well.

The relationship between Coronation and Phoenix showed a huge benefit in the number of coaches present from Coronation.

Keith Bonnington, Sandy Bennett, Colin Taylor and Kevin Hooper are all interested and developing coaches.

A perfect relationship between the two clubs which benefits all.

Folau likely to lodge legal challenge NZME Israel Folau will challenge his sacking by Rugby Australia, according to a report.

The Australian Financial Review reports the former Wallabies star has hired commercial law firm Macpherson Kelley to lodge a legal challenge after he was fired for saying homosexuals will go to hell in an April 10 Instagram post.

The firm’s head of employment George Haros said they believe Rugby Australia acted “unlawfully”.

“We believe Rugby Australia and the Waratahs have acted unfairly and unlawfully in their treatment of Israel,” Haros told the AFR. “Israel has several options available to him at this point, and we are considering his next steps.”

Haros will work closely with Melbourne-based silk Stuart Wood QC, a leading lawyer in unlawful termination cases where free speech is a central issue, on a case likely involving claims of unlawful termination and breach of contract under the Fair Work Act, the AFR reports.

The Fair Work Act protects employees from unlawful dismissal on religious grounds.

Folau was sacked on May 20 and has until Monday to begin that process with the Fair Work Commission, which is where he is expected to take up the legal fight.

Israel Folau The 30-year-old decided not to appeal through Rugby Australia’s internal channels, saying that he feared he would receive unfair treatment during the process.

Steve Tew standing down NZME New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew announced yesterday he will stand down from his role at the end of this year.

His departure will bring the curtain down on a 25-year long career in rugby administration, including the iast 12 years as NZ Rugby CEO. Tew has worked at NZ Rugby since 2001 and will leave in December.

“After much reflection, I’ve decided that this is the best time for me to make way for someone else to lead New Zealand Rugby into the future and a new phase for our national game,” Tew said.

“There are new and exciting changes coming as a result of the upcoming, new international calendar; a changing broadcast environment; as well as a new All Blacks head coach to be appointed; so it’s the right time for me.”

“It’s been an enormous privilege to hold this post. I’ve worked with this organisation coming up to 18 years and every day, while there has been some significant challenges, has been an enormous privilege.”

Tew said there were a number of things that he’s built on since taking on the role.

“We’ve built on and done better or bigger things. If you think about Cardiff in 2007, which was not long after I’d been appointed, we went home a bit early than we’d anticipated, that could have been a really significant moment for us if we didn’t take the lessons out of it and learn them. And I think we did. And that’s why we sit here having won the last two World Cups.

“People will no doubt go back to 2016, where we had player behaviour issues. Again, not what we wanted in our game. But we took that as an opportunity. We set up a very thorough independent review and now we have a programme in work, that if we carry it on, I think will change this country for the better. and keeping New Zealand Rugby fresh and invigorated, whilst always encouraging our people to grow and extend themselves. I believe the time is right for someone else to lead the organisation.

“It has been a great privilege to hold this position and I’m grateful for every day that I have experienced.

“My wife, Michele, and I have been talking for some time about the best time for us to move on to some new challenges. Our chair

Brent Impey and I also discussed when the best time would be to introduce some new blood and new leadership, to keep New Zealand Rugby at the top of our game.

“I’ve not made this decision lightly – it’s a job I love and I consider it an absolute privilege – but it is for those reasons, that I believe the time is right to step down.

“I am immensely grateful to the board for their ongoing support. I also want to pay particular thanks

to New Zealand Rugby’s staff.

They are an incredibly hard-working, passionate group of people and it has been an absolute pleasure and privilege leading them.

Baby Blacks dispatch Georgia at World Cup opener NZME The New Zealand Under 20s opened their 2019 account with a 45-13 win over Georgia at the World Rugby Under 20 Championships in Argentina yesterday.

Billed to be a fierce forward encounter the New Zealand team stood up to their powerful opponents, absorbing plenty of early pressure.

While Georgia opened the scoring with a penalty, it was New Zealand lock Taine Plumtree who crossed the stripe first.

An acrobatic effort from Kohan Herbert and strong showing from Dallas McLeod added two further tries to the score card and saw the New Zealand side lead 19-6 at the break.

Georgia got within six points of the lead when going over for the opening try of the second spell but it was one-way traffic after that point.

New Zealand ran in four second half tries; Leicester Faingaanuku, Quinn Tupaea, George Dyer and Jeriah Mua all crossing

for five pointers.

Captain Kianu Kereru Symes paid credit to the hard working Georgian side.

“We knew they were going to bring it and they definitely did.

We kept our intensity up and stepped it up another level when our replacements came on and that’s a real positive for us.

A Wellington and former Hurricanes rugby player has been disciplined by New Zealand Rugby after allegedly admitting taking an illicit substance.

The player was found guilty of serious misconduct after he admitted using an illicit substance in late May at a Hutt Old Boys’ Marist event.

The Wellington and New Zealand unions were made aware of the alleged incident due to a video being circulated on social media. The video appeared to show two club players with what was later confirmed to be an illicit substance.

The player has represented the Hurricanes at Super Rugby level.

Wellington Rugby didn’t name the player in a statement but did confirm that the case had been handed to police.

“The player admitted his actions in a misconduct meeting,” the Wellington union said in a statement.

“The player was remorseful and volunteered to undertake counselling and volunteer time at his club. He was warned and was suspended for two weeks from all rugby including games and training meaning he is only available after Monday June 10.

He will miss one club game and one pre-season game for Wellington.”

The union said he had now also been placed in the targeted pool of the illicit drug testing programme.

Wellington Rugby Union chief executive Matt Evans said they were also talking to Hutt Old Boys Marist about the actions of club players also in the video.

“There is no place for illicit substances in rugby. We are incredibly disappointed this has happened. With regard to this player we have accepted his remorse, he has now put his career in jeopardy but he is a young man who we believe is entitled to make amends.”

Hutt Old Boys Marist chairman Phil Saxton said the players’ actions were unacceptable and in a clear breach of its code of conduct.

“The club has taken the opportunity to initiate a significant education exercise around alcohol and illicit substances for all players, not just the ones involved in this incident.

“The players in the video are also taking an active lead in the process and working hard to provide reparation on a meaningful level.”

Time runs out on Blues’ season NZME Sonny Bill Williams was close to a return for the Blues for their match against the Reds in Brisbane on Friday but has ruled himself out after the team’s training run in Auckland yesterday.

The midfielder had been bracketed in the team alongside Ma’a Nonu and he appeared to get through a practice session held in stormy conditions at the team’s Alexandra Park headquarters satisfactorily but his troublesome knee, which has kept him on the sidelines since the win over the Stormers on March 30, is not quite 100 per cent.

“He’s made big progress,” coach Leon MacDonald said after he received the news from Williams.

“We always knew it was going to be a stretch target to make the game considering where he was at [following surgery]. He didn’t quite make it through training today so we’ll give him another week.

“It’s just not quite there; he can’t push off it the way he would like.”

Given the Blues are unlikely to make the playoffs – they need two big wins from their final two games and hope other results go their way – their last match of the season will probably be against the Hurricanes in Wellington a week on Saturday.

If fit, that’s also likely to be Williams’ final match for the franchise and probably in Super Rug-

“There’s always a frustration when you know you’re letting other teams in through your own mistakes,” MacDonald said. “It’s something we’ve addressed a lot throughout the week.

“We’ve challenged the group this week to bring a bit more steel around their personal preparation; just little things like the handling and nailing your roles are critical to winning these games and we have to be better this week at that.

“We’re only four points away from everyone else … our only option is to play like we can make it. But we also want to show everyone how good a team we can be and go away on the road and put in a performance we can be proud of.”

New Zealand wronged by bizarre decision

There’s something a little bit sour in the way the Junior All Whites were eliminated from the Fifa Under-20 World Cup. It feels like New Zealand were wronged, and football fans in this country will be feeling a bit sick.

From some quarters there will be the inevitable reaction “that’s sport” or “that’s what happens in football”, but actually it doesn’t. It never has before.

The penalty shootout, which is already a lottery, turned on the unprecedented intervention of the VAR assistant referee, who was implementing a new Fifa rule change around penalty kicks.

That tweak to the laws, which mandates that goal keepers must have at least one foot touching the goal line when the kick is taken, officially came into force on June 1, part of a series of amendments for the upcoming season.

That’s just a couple of days before New Zealand’s second round match, although teams were briefed before the Under-20 tournament.

New Zealand goalkeeper Michael Woud appeared in the zone, saving the first two Colombian attempts. Sarpreet Singh buried his kick, while skipper Joe Bell’s weak effort was saved by the South American stopper.

But at 1-2 it was advantage New Zealand, and close to checkmate

when Woud produced a superb reaction stop to knock Colombia’s third penalty attempt up and over the bar.

The referee and the assistant referee saw nothing wrong and at that stage it was game over.

Few, if any teams at elite level, have come back in a penalty contest after failing with their first

three attempts.

Colombia’s subsequent takers would have been in sudden death, with New Zealand holding all the aces.

But it wasn’t to be. The intervention of Spanish video assistant referee Alejandro Jose Hernandez Hernandez persuaded match referee Ahmed Al Kaf (Oman) to order a retake, as Woud had apparently moved early.

Really?

On watching multiple replays many times, it is impossible to discern Woud’s foot leaving the line prematurely.

It certainly wasn’t picked up by the assistant referee, who was standing only a few metres away on the byline. If he can’t, who can?

Apparently Senor Hernandez Hernandez, presumably with the benefit of enhanced technology in the VAR bunker.

To compound matters, Woud, also received a yellow card for his “offence”.

He was now handicapped, knowing that one more alleged tiny misstep and he would be sent off.

The bizarre decision played havoc with his focus and rhythm, and he didn’t come close again to

saving another kick.

It was a scenario wrong on so many levels.

The amended rule was designed to stop keepers crabbing forward to narrow the angle — a la Liverpool’s Jerzy Dudek in the famous 2005 Champions League final shootout, as well other examples, most recently at last year’s World Cup in Russia.

It was never meant to be so microscopic in it’s prescription.

Secondly, goalkeepers already have the odds stacked royally against them in the contest from 12 yards, especially as kickers are allowed to stutter in their run-up.

Sharrock on a winter mission NZ Racing Desk

“From the two barrier, I’d say Madan (Singh, jockey) would have her in the first four or five.

“Chilli Jean will benefit greatly from the run. Probably another jumpout would have helped us, but they are local owners and she has run a few placings at recent jumpouts, so she is forward enough to race, but whatever she does she will improve greatly with.”

Another filly heading into Thursday in a fresh state is La Feelya, who will resume in the Zed at Grangewilliam Stud 1100.

“Her jumpout form has been very strong,” Sharrock said. “I thought it was a field that had a little bit of form in it as well.

“I rate her right up there with the form in the race. Going on her last jumpout, she was very impressive, so I expect her to race really well. I think the loose conditions shouldn’t worry her too much either.”

Sharrock is looking forward to lining up three-year-old debutant Come Sei in the Stable Books Supporting NZ Trainers (1400m) after his impressive trial win at Foxton in April.

“It was a terrific trial,” he said.

“There were three other winners that came out of that trial meeting, so going off the form on that day I am expecting him to race very well. He was very strong in his trial and he seems very adept

New Plymouth trainer Allan Sharrock currently sits on 30 wins for the season and he is on a mission to equal his previous best tally of 40 wins set in the 2001/02 season.

The Taranaki horseman has just under two months to secure 10 wins, but he believes he is taking enough firepower into the winter months to achieve his target.

“The team is going really well,” Sharrock said. “I’d love to get 40 (wins). I think 40 was my best year.

“We have got a bit of work to do, we have go to get 10 in the next two months, but I have got a little bit of fire power, so hopefully we can get somewhere near that.”

Sharrock will be hoping to add to his winning tally at his home track today where he will line up six runners.

Debutant Chilli Jean and a fresh Beckidboo will compete in the NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1200m). While he isn’t expecting a lot from Chilli Jean, he believes Beckidboo will thrive in the heavy track conditions.

“She’s (Beckidboo) had the benefit of two or three jumpouts and she is a mare that relishes bad ground,” he said.

“Her run in December (unplaced run last-start) might have been disappointing to look at, but she felt the ground and I put her aside for the autumn. I think she

“He’s a half-brother to a nice horse who raced a few years back called Puttanesca. I like his chances tomorrow.”

Sharrock has more conservative expectations with five-yearold mare Belle Tem who will lineup in the Stable Books 1400 after finishing unplaced when freshup over 1400m at Hawera last month. “She’s not that flash in wet ground,” he said. “It was a pass mark for me (last start) because she had only one quiet jumpout going into it.

“She’ll improve greatly with the run and she looked that way on Saturday when galloping on a loose track, she galloped quite well. She’ll be at longer odds, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see her running in the money.”

Sharrock’s final runner on the card is three-year-old Reliable Man filly Sister Monica and he is expecting another strong showing from the diminutive threeyear-old when she competes in the Stable Books Remembering Harold Tuson Maiden 1400.

“She’s a nice filly,” he said. “She’s only a pony, but is tough as teak and is out of a good race mare.”

Sharrock is pleased with all six runners heading into today, but has highlighted debutant Come Sei as his best winning chance.

“Come Sei, he’s quite a nice horse and is very progressive,” he said.

Group One treble on the cards for The Bostonian NZ Racing Desk The Tony Pike-trained The Bostonian will be attempting to keep his unbeaten Queensland streak alive when he contests the Gr.1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The four-year-old son of Jimmy Choux has won all five of his starts in the Sunshine State, including two successive Group Ones this campaign and Pike is hopeful for a third this weekend.

as a $41-shot when fresh-up last month, before showing his class when backing-up a fortnight later to win the Gr.1 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm.

He will return to that track on Saturday where he will aim to be the first horse to win all three features in the one season.

“He just loves the Queensland environment,” Pike said. “It would be fantastic if we could pull off the treble.

“He’s got no pressure on him, he has already won two Group One races this preparation, so there is definitely no pressure heading into

Saturday. “It’s more hoping he can just get the job done. It will be fantastic for the horse if he could.”

The Bostonian has drawn barrier 10, but is likely to jump from gate six on Saturday alongside stablemate Endless Drama, who has drawn barrier eight.

“It has ended up working out perfectly,” Pike said. “There are four on the ballot that won’t probably get a start, so it looks like they will be drawn alongside each other in five and six, so it couldn’t be any better.

“There looks to be plenty of speed in the race. If you had drawn

one he (The Bostonian) could possibly have been shuffled back a little bit further than you wanted.

“He will be positive as per usual and it will be completely up to Michael (Cahill, jockey), depending on the tempo of the race.

“You would think he is going to land somewhere in the first six or eight runners in the run.”

Pike is heading into Saturday with confidence after The Bostonian’s track work on Tuesday.

“I can’t fault him, he’s pretty much exactly the same as he was before the Kingston-Smith,” Pike said.

“His work on Tuesday was very solid. He is bright and well, and hasn’t left any feed through the week and he’s a really happy racehorse at the moment.”

Meanwhile, Pike is excited about the prospects of stablemate Endless Drama in the race and expects an improved performance from the seven-year-old after his last start sixth-placing in the Kingsford-Smith.

“He had no option from the gate but to go all the way back and ride for luck,” Pike said. “He just got held up a touch and really flew late, which was encouraging.”

United A head into tonight’s round of the Mid Canterbury Netball premier grade competition eager to keep their winning return to the top grade going.

After an unbeaten round one in the premier two grade – which they were disappointingly relegated to last season – United A were promoted to premier one where they started round two with a good win over Mt Somers last week, 32-18.

It was a great first game back,

but United A could find they have a job keeping that winning run going with a gritty young College A side standing in their way tonight.

When round one of premier one wrapped up a couple of weeks ago, College A were third on the table with three wins, a loss and a draw to their names, and last week they came from behind to beat Hampstead A to make a winning start to round two.

Hampstead A picked up the first bonus point (for finishing within three goals) of the premier one

season in that game, with College A winning 38-35.

But, it wasn’t the result the Janene McDowell-coached side was looking for and probably a disappointing outcome given they led the young College side for most of the match.

Tonight, Hampstead A would need to be in top form to take their first win of round two, as they are set to come up against defending champions Celtic A. Celtic A were a team coming off a mixed couple of weeks, though.

Two weeks ago they finished

round one with a draw with College A to ensure their unbeaten run from the past couple of seasons remained intact, just, and last week they notched up a convincing win over the team they beat in last year’s final, Methven A, despite being down on numbers and having players playing out of position.

That wasn’t the result Methven A wanted to start round two, so they will be determined to make amends when they take to the court tonight against Mt Somers.

Methven A and Mt Somers, and

College A and United A, are set to play in the 6.30pm round tonight, with Celtic A and Hampstead A to follow at 7.30pm.

Meanwhile, Southern A looked to again be one of the teams to beat in premier two, after beating Celtic B – the team relegated from premier one after round one – to start round two last week.

Southern A will be looking to keep that form up against Hampstead B tonight, while Celtic B will play Methven B and Ashburton College A will take on the newly promoted Hampstead C.
