The Ashburton District Council is not taking advantage of a growth in tourism to boost visitor numbers to Mid Canterbury, a national tourism body suggests.

Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) said the number of guest nights in the district grew by just 0.2 per cent last year, while other regions boomed, and it is concerned tourism may not receive the profile it warrants here.

TIA represents 1500 members around the country involved in hospitality, accommodation, adventure activities, attractions, transport operators and other tourism services.

It says visitor spend from both

international and domestic visitors for the district was $171 million for the year ended February 2018.

Beloved Kosmo on the mend

Methven Primary School pupils are relieved their four-legged friend Kosmo has survived a vicious attack.

They have a special association with the Canterbury police dog, after his handler once worked as a teacher in the town and took Kosmo as a puppy to visit pupils.

Constable Regan Turner formerly worked as a physical education teacher at neighbouring Mount Hutt College.

After joining the police force and becoming a dog handler, he visited Methven Primary School to show them his new police dog who was in training.

Teacher Jo Spittal said Kosmo was a hit with pupils right from the start and they had been even more excited after the dog returned last year to give a tactics demonstration.

“They loved it and they especially loved it when he chased

principal Chris Murphy down the field. They were amazed at his speed and how he had his special toy and he would do anything for that toy.

“As Regan was talking to us, Kosmo was trying to get the toy off him.”

Kosmo was attacked on the job late last week and students were having their first day back at school yesterday since hearing about the incident.

Due to the talks Constable Turner had given them while visiting, they knew such injuries were possible in his dangerous line of work, but nevertheless were very concerned.

“They are so relieved he is okay, and we will be sending Kosmo a card to wish him a speedy recovery,” Spittal said.

Two of the school’s pupils whose family are close friends with Turner visited Kosmo at the weekend.

College. His wife Bronwyn said yesterday she and Glen and their three boys Mackenzie, 8, Tom, 6, and Nixon, 3, were happy to see Kosmo back home and on his feet.

“He was having a play with baby toys, he’s feeling better in himself,” she said.

Four-year-old Kosmo received a life-saving blood transfusion following a cut to his jugular, after being deployed in pursuit of an alleged offender through rural property.

Turner recalled he knew something had happened when he could not find his canine colleague.

“He doesn’t run away from me.

I knew he was lying somewhere, it was just a matter of getting to him,” Turner said.

It took 20 to 25 minutes to locate Kosmo and administer first aid.

“Kosmo’s saved me on a few occasions and I can’t thank him enough for what he did.”

Airbnb not a problem here: CEO

The Ashburton District Council is keeping an eye on online accommodation and Airbnb providers in the district.

There are 155 active rentals in the district and the number is predicted to grow.

The issue of how to rate the online accommodation providers will be the subject of a report to council in the next financial year and was raised by Hospitality New Zealand as part of council’s long-term planning recently.

Hospitality NZ said the Airbnb market was of considerable concern to its members and the 155 currently in the district would grow. The organisation suggested council ask the online providers to pay some sort of commercial rate.

“This isn’t necessarily going to generate extra revenue for the council, but it would spread the rate cost of those operating like a commercial accommodation property but only paying residential rates.”

The concept would create a

more level playing field in the accommodation sector, the organisation said.

Commercial operators were facing large and increasing fixed costs while non-regulated online businesses entered the market with little or no compliance requirements or costs.

A two-bedroomed Ashburton house advertised on Airbnb yesterday was being rented at $120 a night. If the house was rented for 365 nights, it would earn a gross total of $43,800.

Hospitality NZ said it did not

begrudge property owners from capitalising on the online accommodation opportunity, but businesses should be treated as businesses.

“A resource consent and building warrant of fitness is required by all hospitality providers and traditional commercial accommodation operators, so there should be no reason why this should not apply to online accommodation providers of private rooms, or entire residences.”

Council acting CEO Jane Donaldson told councillors at the

long-term plan hearing that the growth of online accommodation providers had not been a problem in Ashburton.

“But in Queenstown it is huge because you have streets that were residential streets suddenly have a lot of rented places. We are not quite the swinging centre Queenstown is.

“From a planning point of view we don’t think we have a problem, but if you are looking at revenue and level playing fields, some accommodation providers could get away with low overheads.”

Be aware of impact on children – principal

An Ashburton school principal is warning that mycoplasma bovis could take a serious emotional toll on children from dairy farming families.

As farmers face a challenging and stressful time, Ashburton Borough School principal Sam Winterbourn is urging people to think about the children living under the same roof.

Children could pick up stress from their parents or through their own relationships with other children, he said, risking behavioural changes or mental health issues further down the track.

“It’s obviously an extremely stressful time economically, but we need to think about the emotional effects … and I think we ignore the fact that children tend to pick up the vibe at home, at our peril,” he said.

With mycoplasma bovis now a “significant issue” in Mid Canterbury, he said he can’t help but think of the problems which could result for children – be it in behavioural changes like undue aggression, not eating properly, or otherwise.

“And when kids get stroppy, it puts our own relationships un-

der stress.”

Winterbourn was encouraging families with any concerns to contact the school.

“I want to recognise the fact it can be stressful for families and we are here to help should they have any concerns,” he said.

At a mycoplasma bovis meeting held in Ashburton last Thursday, Ministry of Primary Industries director-general Martyn Dunne brought up the issue of bullying in schools.

Dunne, based in Wellington, said he intended to investigate one incident he had heard of where a child was bullied for their dairy farming background.

However, Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Tim Kuipers said he was not aware of any similar bullying incidents here.

He had not been contacted by any local principals and had not heard anything within his own school, the Ashburton Christian School.

“In our school, half our families are involved in the farming industry and a high percentage actually live on farms. I do hope it’s not a problem,” he said.

He hoped parents with any concerns would contact the school to resolve them.

Methven board applies for funds

The Methven Community Board has asked the Ashburton District Council for $32,000 to progress with a long-term plan to promote the greater Methven area.

The community board already has a plan, Igniting Change, which has led to ideas and preliminary discussions for a brewery and distillery, an agricultural training college and a boutique butter plant.

The plan had wide community input and has already led to one property owner spending $1 million on rejuvenating town centre assets and the development of the Hive co-share business hub.

The next step includes the introduction of professional services in Methven like legal, accounting and technology, and targeting companies to have their regional or national headquarters in the

town. The community board’s request for money will be dealt with by council’s finance and business support committee under economic development.

Presenting the request to councillors at their long-term plan hearing recently, community board chairman Dan McLaughlin said there was a perceived divide in Methven between the community and council.

“Over the last 18 months we have come a long way with council in fixing some of that, people thought not a lot of stuff was being done in the rural areas.”

He said some bright ideas were received during the development of the Igniting Change document, based around Methven and the wider foothills area, which could be branded as a national food bowl. Methven town could also develop a sports academy or hospitality college.

The board had formally adopted eight key priorities for the next year, including developing and implementing a plan to manage and promote the Methven area, support the rejuvenation of the commercial precinct and facilitate the development of an annual event that would provide long-term economic benefit to the area.

It would also talk with tertiary institutions, government and private sector companies about other projects.

The plan was about trying to shift the community’s sentiment from one of despondence and blame, to one of vision and optimism.

“The level of commercial interest being shown in the Methven township and the sense of positivity amongst stakeholders has not been witnessed for almost a decade.”

TIA said tourism should feature more prominently in council’s economic development strategy and action plan.

Moffat said Experience Mid Canterbury had been working within the industry to get tour companies, wholesalers and travel agents to think outside the square when it came to new itineraries.

“Instead of getting people to jump off an aeroplane in Christchurch and head straight to the hot spots such as Lake Tekapo, we are encouraging them to stay and play more in our district by using Mid Canterbury like the airline hub and spoke concept, staying longer in our region and venturing out from Ashburton or Methven on daily journeys within an hour or two from the hub, so people are staying longer and experiencing more.”

He said 2018-19 was shaping up as even more successful with the new initiatives in play.

In brief Smoke-spotters out Smoke-spotters from Environment Canterbury will be on Ashburton streets from now until July 27 looking for smoky woodburners causing air pollution problems.

The spotters will work in teams of two, carry identification and have information flyers to share with residents. There are no plans to issue fines to people with smoky chimneys; the programme is about education and how to produce more heat while reducing smoke.

Heavy snow was forecast from last night through until this morning. “We advise that if you don’t need to travel, please try and stay off the roads tonight and tomorrow morning when the snow is expected to hit. If you must drive, please take extra care and drive to the conditions,” Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said.

New building accepting its first tenants A joint venture development in central Ashburton saw its first occupants move in over the weekend, ready for business yesterday.

Staff from Tavendale and Partners Ashburton office will be the first to move into the Tavendale and Partners Centre on Cass Street, which has been developed by the law firm and leading Mid Canterburybased family agribusiness Carrfields Investments.

Tavendale and Partners will occupy two-thirds of the top floor of the two storey building which will include a client centre with meeting/function rooms and facilities that can be utilised by their clients and will also be able to be used by other groups.

It’s part of a general philosophy that underpins the development – two local businesses investing in the local community, which will benefit everyone and kick start an inner town rebuild that caters for the local community’s growth and needs.

Work began on the 2915 square metre mixed use office and retail building about a year ago and agreements are in place to ensure it is already 76 per cent tenanted.

Other companies moving into the building, whose tenants are agri-professional service related, are irrigation scheme administration service Irrigo Centre, accounting and business consultancy specialists BDO Christchurch, commercial real estate company Colliers and

Leeston-based accountancy firm Lay and Associates.

The way the building has been configured means there are still three available tenancies, including versatile office space upstairs and an area downstairs which includes office/retail space as well as an area that has been designed with hospitality in mind.

There is also plenty of carparking at the back of the building.

An important part of the overall concept has been to involve local businesses in the development, which was designed by local architectural firm Chilton + Mayne Architecture.

Canterbury construction firm Bradford Building was the lead contractor, while as much as possible of the sub-contracting work has been done by Mid Canterbury businesses. The development is an investment in the town’s future, those behind it said, and it will complement the development of the Eastfield Precinct, which together is a major step forward in a growing Mid Canterbury economy.

Companies urged to reduce plastic

Mid Canterbury businesses are being encouraged to follow the lead of large companies which have committed to action to reduce plastic waste.

At an event in Auckland on World Environment Day yesterday, 12 local and international businesses committed to a declaration to tackle plastic waste, and committed to using 100 per cent reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging in their New Zealand operations by 2025 or earlier.

New Zealand-based businesses signing the NZ Plastic Packaging Declaration were Foodstuffs, Countdown, New Zealand Post and Frucor Suntory.

Other businesses include multinationals Amcor, Danone, L’Oréal, Mars, PepsiCo, The Coca-Cola Company, Unilever and Nestlé, which by signing reaffirmed a pledge made earlier this year.

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon applauded the joint governmental and commercial action.

Skifield ready for opening

Mt Hutt is gearing up for one of its best openings in many years with snow due to fall this week.

The skifield begins its 2018 ski season on Friday, and staff are expecting 30 to 60 centimetres of fresh snow will greet skiers and snowboarders.

“It’s going to be a game changer,” said spokesperson James Urquhart of the snow forecast for this week.

“Friday, Saturday and Sunday are set to be magic days, we are really excited about it.”

Currently the skifield base on main trails was about 35 centimetres.

Last week more than 200 staff from around the world converged on the mountain for pre-season training.

“With plenty of changes and improvements made over the summer, including a big upgrade to our Sky High Café, 1610 Coffee Bar and doubling our snowmaking capacity, there was plenty to see for both new and returning staff,” Urquhart said.

Check gates are shut Ashburton district farmers and lifestyle block holders are being reminded to check their fences and gates are secure, following three call-outs for wandering stock in the past month.

Ashburton District Council has the authority to impound wandering stock and owners may face fees and charges for sustenance and transport before they can claim the stock back.

“Wandering stock can be a dangerous hazard for traffic, particularly at night, and it’s irresponsible to let them roam off your property,” council environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle said.

“For cattle in particular, make sure that they have a NAIT tag and records are up-to-date and current. This helps us to notify stock owners and enable stock to be returned. This legal responsibility cannot be underestimated.”

Under the Impounding Act 1955, council can impound any wandering stock, which includes horses, cattle, deer, sheep, donkeys, mules, pigs, goats, chickens and other livestock.

Eight pregnant cows were killed or euthanised because of injury when they were hit by a heavy truck and trailer unit near Hinds last weekend.

They were part of a herd that escaped a paddock, wandered across the main trunk railway line and onto State Highway One.

Company keen to identify skidders

The grounds around Highbank Power Station on the Rakaia River are viewed by some as a nice picnic spot, others the perfect racetrack – and now its managers have had enough.

Trustpower are appealing for any information that could help them identify the culprits who left tyre tracks and skid marks right across the grass over Queen’s Birthday weekend.

KT’s Contracting, who manage the area, arrived on Tuesday to find the mess.

While the problem has been occurring regularly for the past few years, they said it is the worst incident to date.

Regularly fixing the lawn is not some-

thing Trustpower staff particularly want to focus on, Technical Team Leader Chris Sharpe said.

“But because it’s wet and damp on this occasion, the cars have left big deep ruts, and the grass will have to be resowed.”

While the road leading down to the power station is private, Trustpower acknowledge that the area provides a good picnic spot and angling access.

Trustpower were yesterday reviewing CCTV footage and piecing together the “who, what, when, where and why,” he said.

NZ cancer statistics ‘dismal’ New Zealand’s dismal cancer statistics have been highlighted in a global index, putting the country proportionally second worst for new cases.

A new study showed New Zealand’s rate of new cancer cases per 100,000 people – age-adjusted and as at 2016 – stood at 542.8.

That was behind only Australia (at 743.8) and worse than the US (532.9), the Netherlands (477.3) and Luxembourg (455.4).

The study was published as part of the ongoing Global Burden of Disease study – the most comprehensive analysis of cancer-related health outcomes and patterns ever conducted.

It also showed how New Zealand also stood out for having the world’s worst rate of deaths from malignant skin melanoma, along with the worst rate of new cases of leukaemia.

Our rates of the former cancer was 6.6 per 100,000 people – around six times the global average – while rates of the latter were 20.3 per 100,000 people, or three times the global average.

Cancer remained New Zealand’s number one killer, with more than 23,000 people diagnosed every year.

Figures released by the Ministry of Health last month showed more than 9500 people died from cancer each year, representing 31 per cent of all deaths recorded in New Zealand.

The number of people affected by cancer was also expected to increase by 50 per cent by 2035.

Responding to that report, Cancer Society medical director Dr Chris Jackson called for increased government investment to support for people with cancer.

Meanwhile, the new study, just published in the journal JAMA Oncology, found lifestyle-related cancers, such as lung, colorectal and skin cancers, had increased worldwide over the past decade.

“While the increase in lung, colorectal and skin cancers over the past decade is concerning, the prevention potential is substantial,” said Dr Christina Fitzmaurice of the University of Washington, which led the study.

“Vital prevention efforts such as tobacco control, dietary interventions and broader health promotion campaigns need to be scaled up in response to this rise in lifestylerelated cancers.”

It’s time to pay the right price T

here’s not much enticement to be a nurse or a school teacher in New Zealand at the moment and when you break down the numbers around average salaries in this country, it’s not hard to see why things are in such turmoil.

Wage brackets for both occupations have come under heavy scrutiny in the past few months as industries try to battle for higher pay rates for those in the roles.

The numbers paint a reasonably grim picture, considering the magnitude of the respective roles.

One is there to nurture life through learning and the other there to maintain and mend life through medicine.

Yet they both sit well below the national average for salaries paid

in this country. Well below.

A beginning teacher with a Bachelor of Teaching sits around $48,000, while the average salary for a graduate nurse is $47,000.

Admittedly, both look decent wages on paper – and comparative to other roles within the country, they sit even higher.

But at what price should we put on future generations of New Zealanders and at what cost do we value the need for quality care? Both roles effectively see

them with people’s lives in their hands.

I’ve always battled with the misconception that teaching is one of the best jobs in the world.

Paid holidays at four times during the year, as well as a 9-5 working day.

But that couldn’t be any further from the truth.

Teachers work just as hard and for just as long as anyone I know – their dedication to children and encouraging their learning is quite remarkable and the role is nothing like a stroll in the park.

Not only are they asked to teach, they are in short also playing the role of counsellor, doctor and, in some cases, parent.

It’s no longer a case of rocking up at five to nine, writing things on the chalkboard for the day and

then packing up and going home when the school bell rings.

And for nurses, it’s just as tough.

They deal with and see some of the most mentally challenging images on a daily basis. There’s grief and emotion to deal with too.

Too often now we hear about the latest CEO to snare themselves a huge six-figure pay packet, and it’s largely the reason why the national average salary sits so high at around the $74,000 mark.

It’s time we started looking at what is more important in our lives – at what means more and paying those who are providing that service at a much higher rate.

With our cost of living so high,

to get ahead and move forward in life, in most cases it’s nigh on impossible to do it alone.

And the more we devalue some of the most critical and important roles in society – the harder it is going to get.

No-one gets anywhere in life without the services of a school teacher, they are the first boss and often one of the most influential.

We’ve all been under the supervision or guidance of a nurse at some point too and their input into our lives is often just as important.

So let’s start treating those two roles, and others like them, with the respect they deserve and give them the financial reward for their efforts that befits what they do.

A eulogy to my favourite Uber drivers

I

n the spirit of Queen’s Birthday Honours, I would like to bestow my own recognition on some kind civilians of New Zealand.

The men and women who come racing to the rescue when everyone else says “nah, I want to stay on for the maccas”.

The people that prove that not all heroes wear capes, but they definitely wear seatbelts. Those who forgive me my flaws, and rate me a generous 4.76 out of 5.

Introducing my all-time favourite Uber drivers.

Ants Ants escorted myself and my Wellington flatmate to a screening of Conjuring 2, so it’s little wonder I remember his car far more fondly than the 134-minute experience that proceeded. Uber driver by day and DJ by night, the feedback on Ant’s profile promised a “lit ride”, and that it sure was. Ants had a matte black Subaru Impreza which was definitely 5 inches closer to the ground than it should be. In the back was a whopping great sub-woofer and perched atop it

Mark Mark is a middle-aged Christchurch dad who drives an electric Nissan Leaf and really wants everyone to know he drives an electric Nissan Leaf.

Did I mention Mark drives a Nissan Leaf? It’s electric.

There are three comments on Mark’s Uber profile and each compliment him on his electric car. Because, I’ll tell you what, Mark isn’t afraid to show you that his Nissan Leaf can do 0-100km/ h in about 11.3 seconds. Even if that means slowing to a crawl in the middle of Deans Avenue in the middle of the day, and then absolutely fricken flooring it.

Weeehooooooo. Mark’s a legend.

Baby G The question my friend blurted out upon entering Baby G’s car in Christchurch was probably the same one he gets asked about 157 times a day, but he took it remarkably well. “Yes, I am sure that Baby is my real first name.

George is my last name, but I like shortening it to G,” he clarified to our collective relief. “Like the shockproof Casio watch?” we ask.

“Yes, like the shockproof Casio watch.”

Five stars for this man’s instant street cred.

Barbs If you’ve ever watched Mean Girls (if you haven’t spent your life nestled under a big boulder on Castle Hill), you’ll know that the world has both regular mums and then “cool mums”. Barbara – or Barbs as she is affectionately known – is absolutely, unequivocally, one of the latter.

I first laid eyes on Barbs and her Chrysler 300 (yes!), outside a chaotic flat party on Creyk Road, Christchurch. It was less of a regular Uber pick-up and more of a rescue mission, as my relatively

sober friends and I were aggressively pestered by some drunk chick pleading for us to please throw eggs at her neighbour’s house for her.

As we scrambled into the safety of Barb’s car (excuse the egg pun), our intentions were to venture home, curl up in bed and call it a night.

But Barb worked some sort of high volume sing-along magic and turned our night right around. Next thing we knew, we were standing in the wine aisle of Countdown, readying for round two.

As I firmly and enthusiastically placed my firm, five-star feedback, a read through the comments reaffirmed what a gem I’d found in Barbs.

“Barb is legitimately my favourite Uber driver of all time.

She helped me through a breakup and I got to help her. Absolutely brilliant,” said one.

“I am so happy that she was our driver! The best service ever, and so relatable and amazing!” said another.

Bless you Barbs.

Volcano toll up to 69 Rescuers pulled survivors and bodies from the charred aftermath of the powerful eruption of Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire, as the death toll rose to 69 yesterday and was expected to go higher from a disaster that caught residents of remote mountain hamlets off guard, with little or no time to flee to safety.

Using shovels and backhoes, emergency workers dug through the debris and mud, perilous labour on smouldering terrain still hot enough to melt shoe soles a day after the volcano exploded in a hail of ash, smoke and molten rock.

Bodies were so thickly coated with ash that they looked like statues, and rescuers were forced to use sledgehammers to break through the roofs of houses buried in debris up to their rooflines to try to see if anyone was trapped inside.

Fanuel Garcia, director of the National Institute of Forensic Sciences, said 69 bodies had been recovered and 17 of those had been identified. “It is very difficult for us to identify them because some of the dead lost their features or their finger-

Trump says he has right to pardon himself

Barr ‘deeply prejudiced’ Tom Arnold has branded his ex-wife Roseanne Barr a racist conspiracy theorist. Trump’s comments on Twitter came a day after attorney Rudy Giuliani played down the possibility that the president could pardon himself, suggesting he might have that authority but would be unwise to use it.

“It’s likely most people will hold a house for 3-4 years at least.

So even if prices stay flat for the next 6-12 months, they’ve had

those previous 3-4 years to build up their gains and when a sale is made, there’ll probably be some sort of profit.”

But not everyone was a winner.

CoreLogic NZ’s first Pain and Gain report for the year shows to-

tal losses from resales where sellers onsold for less than their original purchase price were $27.2m.

This was down from $36.6m, indicating that few people were concerned enough about the market outlook to push through quick sales for a lower price.

Queenstown, which Davidson described as a “property microclimate”, recorded the next highest median profits per resale after Auckland, at $337,000, followed

by Tauranga ($236,500), Wellington ($227,400) and Hamilton ($195,000).

One sign of market fatigue is in apartments, CoreLogic figures suggest, where the proportion of loss-making resales increased from 8.7 per cent to 11.2 per cent – the highest figure in two years, with sellers who took a hit making a median loss of $33,000.

The kiwifruit industry has offered an interesting insight into how labour markets actually function.

A spokesman from the industry was adamant – the shortage of workers willing to pick and pack kiwifruit was due to the sad welfare mentality of some Kiwis.

Beneficiaries were unwilling to do hard physical work of up to 10 hours a day for the minimum wage. That was why the industry is reliant on temporary migrants and backpackers to cover their annual labour shortage. This was why migrant worker rules need to be eased to ensure this sad work ethic doesn’t penalise this lucrative export industry.

Government welfarism is very corrosive. The kiwifruit industry received over $25 million of taxpayer money to combat the PSA virus several years ago.

Classical economists from the 19th century, such as Adam Smith and David Ricardo and unsurprisingly Karl Marx, were more dubious about how wages were determined in the real world.

They believed there would always be tension between the share of business revenue that went to profit versus wages. The split between profits and wages would be largely determined by the relative bargaining power of workers compared to employers rather than the magical impartiality of free markets and competition.

Recent evidence suggests the classical economists may have been more accurate than the dogma taught to young students in Economics 101.

Some of the most profitable industries in New Zealand have paid the most miserly wages to their rank and file workers. They include the big rest home operators, supermarkets, fast food chains, petrol companies and parts of the agriculture and horticulture sector.

Wages for low income jobs are largely determined by the relative bargaining power of workers versus employers. Power imbalances in labour markets are the norm.

local workers. He replied that this would reduce the number of workers available to other kiwifruit growers in the area. They would end up competing with each other for workers. They would all end up having to pay higher wages.

The kiwifruit industry has bounced back from the PSA scare.

It has innovated in developing and adopting new strains of kiwifruit that are resistant to the PSA virus. It is a great comeback story.

It is a credit to its resilience and enterprise and government assistance.

A hectare of kiwifruit farm around Te Puke can sell for up to $1 million. Recent returns for orchards are between $50,000 and $100,000 per hectare. Kiwifruit are once again a very profitable crop.

Yet they can’t afford to pay their pickers and packers above the minimum wage. They need Government assistance to increase the supply of migrant workers.

It is an interesting insight into how some labour markets work in New Zealand, especially for low income jobs. It helps explain some of the huge increase in income equalities in recent decades.

Economics 101 teaches that wage rates in most occupations are ultimately determined by supply and demand for workers in that occupation. It teaches that workers will tend to be paid according to their productivity due

Why our most profitable industries pay miserable wages

Across the main centres, Wellington and Dunedin continued to stand out as the strongest markets overall.

In the Capital, low levels of listings and strong upward pressure on prices meant just 1.2 per cent of sales were made at a loss, while in Dunedin the number was even lower at 1 per cent.

By contrast, Auckland saw an increase in the proportion of loss making resales, up from 3.3 per cent to 3.7 per cent. Hamilton and Tauranga also experienced slight increases, while Christchurch city had the highest proportion at 9.9 per cent, up from 8.8 per cent in the last three months of 2017.

Owner occupiers fared better than investors during the first quarter of the year, with just 2.6 per cent of their sales being made at a loss, down from 3.2 per cent in the last three months of 2017.

Investors faced more pain, with 5.1 per cent of their sales generating a loss, up from 4.7 per cent.

House sellers across New Zealand are still cashing in despite some markets cooling off, pocketing $3.1 billion in profit during the first three months of 2018, new figures show.

The remarkable money being made in Kiwi property – even in Auckland where prices have flattened – shows just how big the country’s housing boom has been, property experts say.

The median profit for each property sold in Auckland during the first quarter of the year was $352,000, accounting for nearly $1.2b in gross profit, data from property information company CoreLogic NZ shows. The median profit is down from $390,000 for the last three months of 2017.

CoreLogic senior research analyst Kelvin Davidson predicts “more of the same” for the rest of 2018, especially with little prospect of mortgage rate rises.

“Big picture: Wherever you’re selling, provided you’ve held for a normal period of time, you will be seeing a gain,” Davidson said.

“Certainly in the case of Auckland, because prices have been flat there for the last 12 or 18

A good Kiwi burger S

ometimes fancy food just doesn’t cut the mustard, all you want is a good, honest, Kiwi burger.

There’s a whole lot more to burgers than the basic version dished out at takeaway bars. Nothing wrong with those when it’s cold and you’re hungry, but the homemade version takes burger eating to a whole new level.

Saucy cheeseburger 600g beef mince 1/2 large onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 T fresh breadcrumbs 1/2 C chives, finely chopped 1/2 C parsley, finely chopped 1/2 C grated cheese 2 T tomato paste 1 T oil Few drops worcestershire sauce 8 slices cheddar cheese Halved hamburger buns Lettuce Thinly sliced red onion rings Sauce: 3/4 C mayonnaise 1 shallot, peeled and finely chopped 3 gherkins, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 1/2 T Dijon mustard 1 T tomato paste ■ Preheat the oven to grill.

■ Place all the patty ingredients in a bowl, season and combine.

■ Shape into four patties, cover and refrigerate for 15 minutes.

■ Preheat fry pan.

■ Brush the patties with a little oil and cook for a few minutes until crunchy and brown on one side.

■ Turn patties, reduce the heat to mediumlow and cook for another 8-10 minutes until cooked through.

■ Transfer the patties to a roasting dish or oven tray and lay a slice or two of cheese on top of each one.

■ Cook under the grill for a minute or so until the cheese starts to melt over the patties.

■ Combine sauce ingredients.

■ Spread the bottom bun with sauce. Place a patty on top then add the lettuce leaves and slices of red onion.

Giant lamb burger 600g lamb mince 1/2 large onion, very finely chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 egg, lightly beaten 1T fresh breadcrumbs 1/2 C feta, crumbled 1/2 C mint leaves, chopped 1T rosemary leaves, finely chopped 1T tomato paste 1T oil Zest of 1 lemon 4-5 burger buns, halved Tomato relish or sauce Lettuce leaves Thinly sliced red onion 4 eggs, fried 2-3 ripe tomatoes, sliced 1/2 C mayonnaise Your choice of buns, halved ■ Place all the patty ingredients in a bowl, season and combine.

■ Shape into 4 patties, cover and refrigerate for 15 minutes.

■ Preheat a frying pan to a medium heat ■ Brush the patties with a little oil and cook for a few minutes until crunchy and brown on one side ■ Turn patties, reduce the heat to medium low and cook for another 8-10 minutes until cooked through.

■ Layer other ingredients with patties between buns and spread with mayonnaise

Bacon and egg burger 1T olive oil 6 pieces rindless bacon 6 ciabatta rolls 6 eggs 1/2 C mayonnaise 1T chives, 1 clove crushed garlic 1t wholegrain mustard Lettuce ■ Heat oil in a large frying pan and cook bacon for 3-4 minutes until crispy, and set aside.

■ Cut buns in half horizontally and sear the cut sides in the bacon pan until golden and toasted.

■ Set aside.

■ Crack the eggs into the frying pan and fry for 1 minute.

■ Then cover and cook for a further 1 minute

or until the yolks are just starting to set.

■ Remove the pan from heat.

■ Combine mayonnaise, garlic, chives and mustard, and season.

■ Spread each toasted bun with mayonnaise and top each with bacon, egg and lettuce.

■ Add extra mayonnaise and sandwich with the top-toasted bun.

Blue cheese lover’s burger 600g beef mince 4t olive oil 250g mushrooms, sliced 100g blue cheese, sliced 4 ciabatta rolls Mayonnaise Lettuce leaves Fruity chutney ■ Combine the mince with some salt and pepper in a bowl mixing with your hands.

■ Form into 4 patties.

■ Flatten the patties and make a small well in the middle of each.

■ Set aside.

■ Heat the oven to 180ºC and warm the buns.

■ Heat most of the oil in a frying pan and sauté the mushrooms with a little salt for about 5 minutes and set aside.

■ Heat a little more oil in the frying pan over a medium/high heat.

■ Add the patties and cook, turning once to desired doneness.

■ When you have turned the patty the first time, top with the cheese and it will melt as you finish cooking.

■ Spread the warm buns with chutney then mayonnaise.

■ top with lettuce then the patty and then the mushrooms and finally top with the bun.

Salt and freshly ground pepper, to season 4 burger buns, cut in half 1T plain flour, to form patties 2 tomatoes, large, sliced 1T chutney, to serve 1C baby spinach 1/4 telegraph cucumber ■ Blend chickpeas, chilli sauce and egg to form a smooth paste.

■ Stir in breadcrumbs, spring onions and coriander or parsley.

■ Season with salt and pepper to taste.

■ With floured hands, form the mixture into four flat, even-sized patties.

■ Heat oil in a non-stick frying pan and cook patties for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until golden brown.

■ Toast the burger buns under a hot grill.

■ Arrange spinach leaves on the bun bases.

■ Place patties on top, then add tomato, cucumber and chutney. Serve immediately.

QUICK RECIPE

Mini lemon and blueberry muffins 1¼ C self-raising flour ½ C sugar 1/3 C canola oil 1/3 C sour cream 1/3 C milk 1 egg grated zest of ½ lemon ¾ C blueberries (fresh or frozen) ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fanforced). Spray 2 x 12-hole mini muffin pans generously with oil.

■ Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl. Stir in the sugar.

■ In a separate bowl, mix together the oil, sour cream, milk, egg and lemon zest and pour into the dry mixture.

■ Use a spatula or large spoon to mix the ingredients gently and quickly until just combined.

■ Fold in the blueberries.

■ Spoon the muffin mixture into the prepared pans. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Thorpe speaks out Ian Thorpe has called for change with how sporting bodies approach major competitions like the Olympics in a bid to ease the burden on athletes. The Australian swimming legend believes there is too much pressure placed on competitors when organisations set medal targets for events.

Instead of being ambitious in setting high goals, Thorpe says it’s only having a detrimental effect on athletes’ performances. “We know the athletes represent our communities, they’ll represent the diversity of this country and they’re going to represent it well to the best of our ability and that will lead to gold medals.”

Rolling over the plains

Racing was fierce across the grades when the Tinwald Cycling Club’s Rolling Plains Mini Tour hit the roads around Mt Somers on Saturday.

A field of 66 riders aged from under 11 through to under 17 contested the annual mini tour and although it was cold, the weather largely played ball, with drizzle only starting to fall during the day’s final stage.

Stage one was an out-and-back

race from Mt Somers towards Lake Clearwater, while stage two was a time trial on Tramway Road, and stage three took riders down Valetta Westerfield Road to Tinwald.

Racing was particularly tight in the under 17 boys’ grade, with James Corry taking out the first two stages and finishing third in the third stage, which was enough for him to take the overall win ahead of second placed Luke Price and third placed Hunter Gough.

In the under 17 girls’ grade Ashburton’s Caitlin Titheridge won all three stages to claim the title ahead of Meg Barnes and Sian Morgan, while in the under 15 girls’ section Jaz McLeod came out on top.

Sarah Ford and Maddi Lowry were tied for second on points for the under-15 girls meaning it had to go back to who had the superior time trial time, which saw Ford take second.

The under 15 boys’ tour was won by Jaxson Whyte, who took

out all three stages, while Jonathan Fish was second and Ronan Shearing third.

For the under 13s, Noah Hollamby took out the boys’ title with Jack McLeod second and Luca Sanders third, while Emily Toomey won the girls’ title, with Alice Barnes second and Ella Turnbull third.

A field of under 11 boys also took part, with Zach Brookland winning, and Austin Earl and Armani McLennan taking second and third respectively.

Fox secures US Open berth Ryan Fox has added to his already successful weekend by qualifying for the 2018 US Open Championship at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club yesterday.

With rounds of 65 and 71 at the Open Sectional Qualifying at Walton Heath Golf Club, Fox continued his form from the European Tour to secure a place in his fourth major championship which commences on June 13.

After playing two Open Championships and one PGA Championship, this will be his first US Open as he looks to join fellow Kiwi and 2005 US Open champion, Michael Campbell in the history books.

“Massively excited to qualify

for my fourth major, I have never played the US Open before, so to get to play one in New York at Shinnecock at one of the most iconic US Open venues is going to be pretty special, I can’t wait,” said Fox. The unique thing about his qualification is that Campbell qualified for the US Open through the same sectional qualifying.

The USGA introduced European qualifying for the first time in 2005, which took place at the exact same destination, Walton Heath.

The eventual US Open champion had to sink a six-foot birdie putt on the last hole of qualifying to secure his place in the US

Open and the rest is history.

Fox has enjoyed a great few weeks on the European Tours Rolex Series with his form continuing to go from strength to strength, so he will have high hopes and a positive mindset entering one of the globe’s biggest events.

“It’s been a pretty surreal four days, obviously finishing with a top 10 in Italy with a great last round and doing a lot to secure my card for next year, then hightail it back to London for 36 holes today.

“I’m just very happy and hopefully it can continue for another week or so entering the US Open,” said Fox. - NZME

The AFL has announced it will revisit its experiment with four field umpires during the coming bye rounds. The league has undertaken limited trials with an extra umpire on the field in recent years but hasn’t seen enough evidence to make the move permanent. AFL football chief Steve Hocking has told reporters the trial will take place in all games during rounds 13 and 14 but ruled out implementing a four-umpire system this season.

Scott keeps streak alive Adam Scott has vowed to make the most of a late reprieve after keeping his super golf majors streak alive by earning a US Open berth at a qualifying event. The former world No.1 has not missed a major in almost 17 years, with his 67 straight appearances since the 2001 British Open second only to Sergio Garcia’s sequence of 75.

But Jutanugarn regrouped to claim her second major championship title with a par save from a bunker at the fourth hole of their playoff.

Time for the Blues to shine - surely!

W

hen two rugby league teams run out on to the field in Melbourne tonight, I’ll be firmly standing in the blue corner.

Why? To be honest, I’m not too sure. But what I do know is that after years of hurt and pain, this could finally be the year that the momentum starts swinging in favour of New South Wales.

Rugby league’s State of Origin is a sporting occasion that divides two nations.

In Australia, it’s understandable – it’s Queensland versus New South Wales, the boys in blue versus the maroons.

But why is it that New Zealand, like me, gets so involved in the hype, too?

I’m a New South Wales supporter and I don’t really know how I came to be one.

The closest I’ve ever even come to New South Wales soil was a stopover at Sydney Airport more than 20 years ago.

Maybe my brother supported the maroons while we were growing up, so I – as you do –

decided to go the other way.

Or maybe it’s because for the last goodness-knows how many years New South Wales have been the underdogs?

It’s always nice to see the underdogs coming through, and you don’t get a much bigger underdog than New South Wales – they’ve only won the series once in the past 11 years.

Or maybe it’s because of my strong dislike for a few players who have been key figures in Queensland’s success in recent years – Billy Slater, Johnathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith.

Off the field they may well be lovely blokes, but on the field they have never endeared themselves to me.

I’m sure maroons’ supporters have said the same about the likes of Paul Gallen over the years. That’s just how State of Origin rolls.

But just how Origin 2018 will roll out is anyone’s guess.

footy, many are picking 2018 to be the best chance for New South Wales to win in many, many years.

Origin is funny though.

It’s hard to pick.

A three-game series, since 2001 there has only been one 3-0 series win.

However clear-cut it may look on paper, players just seem to rise to another level for Origin.

New South Wales may look to have the edge on paper this year, but Queensland have the history on their side.

As always, my money is on blue and hopefully they get on top early.

It’s easier to stay awake watching until midnight when your team’s winning.

Even if they do get out to a good lead I may not make it right to the end though – I don’t think I’ve managed to stay awake until full time for the past five years, strangely coinciding with the time I became a mum and sleep became a very precious resource – but I will do my best because like all Origin games that have gone before it, it’ll be a great game.

There’s just something about State of Origin that makes it hard not to get wrapped up in it. The passion from the players, the commentators and the crowd just draw you in.

And these days there’s the added bonus of social media, too.

As today goes on I guarantee that a number of my Facebook friends will change their profile photos to something State of Origin related and 90 per cent of them will have a maroon tinge to them.

They’ve had plenty to crow about in recent years and have not hesitated to do so.

Hopefully this year they’ll be silenced.

Inglis the man for Maroons

By Laine CLark An emotional Queensland coach Kevin Walters says he “wouldn’t want anyone else in charge” than Greg Inglis as the Maroons look to begin a new era in tonight’s State of Origin opener in Melbourne.

Walters at one stage looked like he was fighting back tears as he passionately backed new skipper Inglis to step up in the absence of retired greats, ex-captain Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Johnathan Thurston.

And that was before veteran fullback Billy Slater was added to that list after making a shock withdrawal on Monday due to a hamstring injury.

The Maroons were already without 151 Origin games’ worth of experience after the Big Three’s representative retirement and selectors overlooked veterans Matt Scott and Darius Boyd for game one.

After Slater’s stunning withdrawal, Inglis, 31, is now the sole remaining survivor of Queensland’s 2006 team that began their dominant run of 11 series wins in the last 12 years.

“I wouldn’t want anyone else in charge of this team than Greg right now for the situation we have found ourselves in,” Walters said.

“Greg does a lot with his actions and we will see that on Wednesday night.”

Walters reckoned naming Inglis – a veteran of 30 Origins – as captain was a no-brainer.

Baabaas bow to Rams It’s been a rollercoaster couple of weeks for the Ashburton Barbarians rugby league team. They headed to Christchurch to take on the Woolston Rams on Saturday and came away with a 30-20 loss. It was only their second loss of the season. That first loss was two rounds ago at the hands of competition leaders the Burnham Chevaliers, but they bounced back from that to record a resounding 42-4 win over Marist Saints a week later. Saturday’s loss meant they were now second on the table, tied with Woolston.

Gagai may be in doubt Queensland are reeling after reports winger Dane Gagai suffered a finger injury at yesterday’s closed Maroons training session at the MCG. Gagai is believed to be in major doubt for tonight’s State of Origin opener after reportedly going down with a compound finger dislocation that usually sidelines players for a month.

Brisbane’s Anthony Milford and Newcastle’s Kalyn Ponga flew into the Queensland camp on Monday night as cover for the injury-hit Maroons.

A generation of pain They’re the generation of NSW players with fewer mental scars yet every reason to have the State of Origin blues. There’s 16 of them who, if it wasn’t for one Trent Hodkinson show-and-go in 2014, wouldn’t have witnessed Origin success for the whole of their adult lives. But they’re a team all about the future. The past doesn’t rate a mention. “Our young guys don’t have those scars from years gone by,” Blues captain Boyd Cordner said. “We can take some lessons from the past but we are more so looking forward.”

Overseas Origin backed NSW coach Brad Fittler says the sport has a duty to take State of Origin to new and overseas markets in a bid to grow the game.

Tonight’s series opener at the MCG kicks off at least a four-year run where one game of the threematch series will be taken to a neutral venue. Perth will host a match in 2019, as will Adelaide in 2020 before the series returns to Melbourne in 2021 and 2025. There has been some suggestion in the past Origin clashes could be taken to New Zealand or even further abroad.

Salford releases Vatuvei Greg Inglis has had 30 Origin games to think about becoming the skipper.

“From when he came into the side as an 18 or 19-year-old, he has grown and matured so much,” he said.

‘I see the respect he has from the playing group.

“And I can sit here today knowing how Greg is going to play.

“He will lead from the front and if he does that, I will be very comfortable sitting in the (coach’s) box.”

Inglis was humbled to be making his debut as Maroons captain at Melbourne – where he began his glittering career in 2005 with NRL club the Storm as a teenager.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for myself.

He was contracted to the end of the year but has now agreed to an early release.

Dream weekend on the mat Ashburton bowlers, Michael Lawson and Grant Wilson have readied themselves for the New Zealand Indoor Bowls Nationals which begin in Ashburton this weekend with success in Rotorua.

The duo combined with Otago players, Daniel French and Keri Te Tamaki to win the North Island Championship Fours on Sunday, producing a massive comeback to claim the title.

Well down on the scorecard at the half-way point through the final, French led his team right

back into the contest – forcing an extra end with the scores all tied after the allotted amount of ends.

They managed to grab shot and hold onto it for the entire final end to claim the victory.

It’s good form for the Ashburton duo ahead of this week’s National Championships at the EA Networks Centre.

Lawson, French and Matt Markham will be out to go one better in the Fours Championship this year after they finished runner-up in Taupo 12 months

ago. Te Tamaki joins them in the side, replacing Chris McAdam who played last year.

Lawson and Markham finished runner-up in the event in 2016 as well.

Meanwhile, in Christchurch, two former Ashburton players have grabbed themselves a national title at the Catholic Nationals at the Hornby Workingmen’s Club.

He finished runner-up in the singles on Saturday, won the fours on Sunday and then combined with Sullivan to win the pairs on Monday – earning him the title of Player of the Tournament.

United machine continues to roll on A 6-3 victory over Burnham on Queen’s Birthday Monday ensured Mid Canterbury United’s unbeaten run in this year’s Mainland Football division two competition continued.

The win at Burnham topped off a good long weekend for the Mid Canterbury United senior men’s team, after they also picked up a 4-2 win over the FC Twenty 11 Bombers in Ashburton on Saturday.

Mid Canterbury United were top of the table after nine rounds.

The only unbeaten team so far, they had notched up an incredible record of 51 goals for and just eight against.

There were five games left to be played this season and Mid Canterbury United needed to win at least three of those to be

sure of taking out the competition.

But with winter weather well and truly setting in now and meaning wet pitches, it threw every game open, coach Marty Fitzgerald said.

Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury United FC’s women took on the Halswell United Women at the Ashburton Domain on Sunday and came away with a 4-0 loss.

Halswell United were the top team on the division one leaderboard along with Western AFC Rebels, with Mid Canterbury second after three wins, two draws and a loss from their six games so far.

The Mid Canterbury women are on the road to Nomads United AFC Ladies this weekend.

Williams on Pick Me Up Pick Me Up In Rio will close out an encouraging first campaign at Riccarton today.

The filly has made a bright start to her career and will head for a winter spell following her appearance in the El Doute At Stud 2YO (1200m).

“This will be her last run, she’s still developing and growing, and she’ll go out for five weeks,” said owner-trainer Kevin James.

Pick Me Up In Rio finished in the money in her first two starts before she collected black type at her most recent outing when she was third behind the northerners Secret Allure and Peaceful in the Listed Champagne Stakes (1200m).

“She’s never been a problem.

“All she wants to do is run so she’s

been an easy horse to train,” James said.

“I’m pleased with her condition.”

The only query he has with Pick Me Up in Rio is the heavy going, but instinct is telling him that the daughter of Captain Rio will cope.

“I don’t work her on the grass much, I work her at home and on the beach, but my feeling is that she will handle it,” James said.

The experienced Kylie Williams (right) rode the filly last time out and will again take the reins.

James bred Pick Me Up In Rio and he has high hopes for an unraced juvenile filly, also by Captain Rio. “She’ll probably go to the trials at Rangiora next week, she might be as good as this one,” he said.

Ashburton College’s A netball side will host Rangi Ruru Girls’ School in the Canterbury secondary schools’ SuperNet competition tonight.

The game will be played at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre at 4.45pm and would see Ashburton College looking to notch up their second win of the competition.

After starting with a big 45-17 defeat to the powerful Christchurch Girls’ High School (CGHS) in round one, Ashburton College lost to Kaiapoi High School 38-34 before picking up their first win of the competition against St Andrew’s.

They won 26-25 after heading into the final quarter trailing 21-19.

The Ashburton College girls headed into round four sitting at the bottom of the table, but they were one of five teams tied with one win.

Rangi Ruru was one of the others.

CGHS remained unbeaten at the top of the table.

Steve Smith has opened up about the personal lows that followed Australia’s cheating scandal in Cape Town, saying he spent four days in tears.

Smith and David Warner were among the players snapped up in the inaugural draft for the Global T20 Canada, a tournament that will be hosted entirely at a ground on the outskirts of Toronto.

The Twenty20 event, which runs June 28-July 15, will be Warner and Smith’s first taste of competitive cricket since the balltampering saga derailed their careers.

Smith continues to train in private, doing some work in the nets with the help of his dad. The former skipper spoke to students at Sydney’s Knox Grammar School on Monday as part of his charity work with the Gotcha 4 Life Foundation.

“I probably spent four days in tears. I was really struggling mentally,” Smith told the assembled crowd during a discussion about mental health.

“It certainly was the toughest thing that I’ve had to do.”

Smith and Warner, both stripped of their leadership positions and estimated to have lost at least $5 million each in sponsorship and playing contracts, remain banned from international cricket until March.

The suspensions also cover domestic T20, one-day and firstclass cricket in Australia but the disgraced duo, along with Cameron Bancroft, are free to play in leagues around the world.

Warner will hit the track, gym and nets this month during some sessions with NSW, who returned to work on Monday following their off-season break.

“Thanks to the Winnipeg Hawks for selecting me to play in what will be a really competitive tournament. Prep steps up this week in the nets,” Warner posted on Twitter shortly after completing a 2km time trial with some NSW team-mates.

There could potentially be some awkward SCG catch-ups for the opener, who declared earlier this year he will do everything he can to “earn back the respect of the Australian public”.

Test quicks Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will soon ramp up their rehabilitation from injuries in Sydney.

Warner’s relationship with his test team-mates was strained during the ball-tampering scandal and ensuing fallout, in which Cricket Australia fingered the 31-year-old as the architect of a premeditated plan to cheat by using sandpaper to scuff the ball.

However, captain Tim Paine has repeatedly rubbished claims that members of the team told CA they never wanted to play in the same XI as Warner again.

Midfield still a puzzle

By GreGor Paul Having been passed fit, Ryan Crotty will now almost certainly start in the All Blacks midfield this weekend against France.

But as to which position he’ll be in and who will be alongside him, that still remains educated guesswork.

If Sonny Bill Williams hadn’t suffered a knee injury last week, there would have been no mystery.

Williams at second-five and Crotty at centre – that would have been the All Blacks’ midfield selection and it wouldn’t have taken them overly long to make it either.

But no Williams means a host of permutations are now possible because Crotty has a genuine capacity to play in either midfield berth.

Since making his debut in 2013, Crotty has split his test career between second-five and centre.

When he’s been partnered with Williams, as happened in nine tests last year, he’s played exclusively at centre.

But in 2016 Crotty formed a brief but encouraging combination with Anton Lienert-Brown, with the latter at centre.

Given those two have test history playing with one another and are the two most experienced midfielders in the squad, there is a solid argument to be made they should be the starting combination to play France at Eden Park.

There is, however, an equally good argument that says if Crotty is almost certain to return to centre once Williams recovers – at the end of the month – then the better long-term option is to keep him at No. 13 in June and promote the hard-running, spe-

The Hurricanes second-five has been in bruising form in Super Rugby and in one aspect – he takes the line on in with a direct running game and looks to offload out of contact – is a similar player to Williams.

A Laumape-Crotty combination seems to make as much sense as a Crotty-Lienert-Brown combination, but assistant coach Ian Foster wasn’t providing any clues as to which way the selectors are thinking.

“Not really,” Foster said when asked if there was a view about which of the two roles Crotty was better suited to. “I think we probably play a game where they can interchange.

“If you ask him he is probably erring towards No. 12 I think because he gets in pretty well in the first receiver role and our 12 does that a little bit more for us.

“Whenever he is 13 it is just a matter of rearranging a couple of things so it is not too hard.

“We have got a whole lot of different types of midfielders and I like that because I think you need that.

“But the things that are nonnegotiable about the midfield regardless of your skill-set, you have got to be a great communicator, you have got to run good lines, you have to be able to throw short passes and wide passes under pressure and I guess add to that, some of the kicking options.

“If you look at Ryan he ticks most of those boxes and his ability to run nice lines is one of his biggest strengths so if you get those things right and make good decisions at the end of it then you don’t always have to be the fastest or strongest.

“He is calm but he works his butt off to get into the right position to be able to see what he needs to see.”

Whichever combination is selected, the key challenge will be to deliver an attacking game that breaks one of the best defensive sides in the world game.

The French conceded the least tries in the Six Nations and had the highest successful tackle rate.

The sun came out just in time for the best young cross country runners in Mid Canterbury to battle it out at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds yesterday. The county cross country races for Year 5 and 6, and Year 7 and 8 students were conducted around a 1km track at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds. Year 5 and 6 raced two laps for a 2km race, and Year 7 and 8 raced three laps for a 3km race.

Rookies tackling Origin

BY SCOTT BAILEY History is kind to the future of NSW. Armed with the most rookies in State of Origin history, the Blues will run out onto the MCG tonight with a record 11 debutants in their squad.

Of the seven teams to have debuted eight or more players in one game in State of Origin, four have won.

Two of the losers also took it to the wire.

NSW had eight new players in both 1995 – against an even less experienced Queensland – and lost by two, while in 1999 nine Blues debutants went down to a field goal.

Only the Blues of 1989 – who had eight rookies – have imploded, thumped 36-6.

“Sometimes it’s easier to go in when there are a lot of new faces,” Ryan Girdler, who was one of the 1999 debutants, said.

“I remember going into my first Australian side and there wasn’t a lot of debutants.

You can sort of fall into the background, you don’t feel like part of the group.

“With 11 new faces and the other guys only being at the start of their Origin careers, I think it will be a good thing for integration.”

The challenge though comes in terms of experience.

When Girdler debuted in 1999, he had the likes of Brad Fittler and Laurie Daley in his side for guidance and calming.

a player with more than 10 Origins under their belt.

“The fact the players don’t have that to fall back on will be a bit of a concern,” Girdler said.

“With so many debutants not knowing what to expect they’re going to have to make sure they’re in the contest and in the game.

“Even though Queensland have a different side they’ve still got a lot more experience and senior players who have played 30 games.

“GI (Greg Inglis) and (Will) Chambers will be able to provide that guidance to younger players.”

Girdler was part of one of the great Ori-

gin attacking sides alongside Fittler in 2000, when they piled on a record 104 points.

But the former Blues centre warned Fittler’s men they couldn’t just take an all-out attack approach into tonight.

“You’ve got to earn the right in Origin,” Triple M’s Girdler, who will call the game live from the MCG, said.

“They would be crazy to go there and try and play sideline to sideline without trying to bust them through the middle.

“Because I personally think our forward pack is a dominant forward pack, and I think we would be silly not to try and go through the middle and then try to use those guys on the edges once we’ve got momentum.”
