The Ashburton District Council is not taking advantage of a growth in tourism to boost visitor numbers to Mid Canterbury, a national tourism body suggests.

Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) said the number of guest nights in the district grew by just 0.2 per cent last year, while other regions boomed, and it is concerned tourism may not receive the profile it warrants here.
TIA represents 1500 members around the country involved in hospitality, accommodation, adventure activities, attractions, transport operators and other tourism services. It says visitor spend from both
