Hotel plan boost for sports centre BY LINDA CLARKE

Farewell to a legend P11
A new hotel block in Ashburton’s central business district will help attract more regional and national events to the EA Networks Centre. Centre manager Steve Prescott said the lack of accommodation in Ashburton town was a negative for tournament and event organisers if it meant athletes had to stay in Timaru, Methven or Rakaia. But a proposed 70-80 bed hotel in the new Eastfield precinct could now be a selling point. There is no immediate timeframe for the project, which is part of a $40 million redevelopment of land bounded by Burnett, Cass and Tancred streets, and developers are undertaking financial mod-
elling before approaching investors and service providers. The hotel complex would include rooms and dining facilities and back onto a common internal sheltered courtyard space. Mr Prescott said the hotel couldn’t be built fast enough. “This is fantastic news and not just for EA. It means when we pitch for tournaments it gives us the opportunity to say there is another accommodation block in town and that means they don’t have to then book as far away as Timaru and Rakaia.” Sports teams and athletes had special requirements and did not want performance affected by having to allow up to an hour for travel, he said. The sports centre has hosted swim meets with 450 swimmers and support-
ing parents, and basketball and netball tournaments over several days since it opened a year ago, with some athletes having to stay in Methven and Rakaia when beds in Ashburton were snapped up. Mr Prescott said some athletes had not come to events in Ashburton because accommodation was too hard to find. “They spend too much time travelling and it becomes quite a burden. It has an impact on performance.” The sports centre will host a four-day secondary schools’ basketball tournament later this year, with 22 senior boys’ teams expected from all over the South Island. On the long-term radar could be the 2018 indoor bowls New Zealand championships.
