Arrest tally now three BY ERIN TASKER
ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A 26-year-old Ashburton man will appear in court this morning charged with assaulting AJ Gairns, taking the total number of arrests in the unexplained death case to three. Mr Gairns’ body was found in a drainage run-off area behind a commercial premises on West Street on Sunday afternoon, but the three people now charged with assaulting him with intent to rob him are alleged to have committed the crime early Saturday morning. The 26-year-old Ashburton
man was arrested yesterday, just hours after police announced they’d arrested a 24-year-old Ashburton man overnight on Tuesday. Those arrests followed the arrest of a 26-year-old Wellington woman the night before. All three are facing a charge of assaulting Mr Gairns with intent to rob. The first two people arrested have now both appeared in the Timaru District Court. Neither entered a plea and both were remanded on bail. The third person will also appear in the Timaru District Court this morning. Police said they believed Mr
Gairns was the subject of an attempted robbery prior to 4am on Saturday. Mr Gairns went missing after going to visit a friend at around 3am on Saturday. Police yesterday returned to the area where Mr Gairns’ body was located by members of the public, behind the Bunnings complex on West Street, to complete additional forensic examination, Mid-South Canterbury Police Detective Senior Sergeant Marion Neill said. They’re also continuing to speak to persons of interest in relation to the events leading up to Mr Gairns’ death, which
they’re continuing to treat as unexplained. When the Guardian asked yesterday whether more serious charges were likely and what had occurred between the alleged attempted robbery, police would not be drawn, saying that formed part of the investigation. On Tuesday police said there was no evidence of suspicious circumstances around Mr Gairns’ death and while they were aware of speculation surrounding the case, they hoped that information may help stop rumours circulating in Ashburton.
