Mt Hutt’s fresh snow dump a ‘game-changer’

In brief Second hottest day Ashburton was the hottest place in the country on Wednesday.

Temperatures reached 21.6°C. This was the second hottest day for the town in July since records began in 1928, according to the MetService. The hottest day in July was in 1998, when the mercury reached 21.9°C.

Fourteen centimetres of fresh powder snow covered brown mountain ridges and turned Mt Hutt back into a white paradise.

It lifted the morale of skiers and snowboarders, topped up main trails and opened up new off-trail terrain.

Manager James McKenzie said yesterday was the best day so far this month, following the snowfall overnight Thursday which was the first since opening on June 7. “It’s a game-changer for us leading into the school holidays,” he said.

Snowmaking is now back in full swing, following warmer temperatures earlier this week, and is set to continue full speed ahead in coming days with frosty conditions forecast.

Rugby spectator banned for six months A local rugby supporter who has given both extensive and lengthy voluntary time to the sport was handed a six-month ban from all rugby at a judicial hearing on Wednesday night.

In a statement to the Guardian, the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union judicial committee confirmed that Denise Willetts had been found guilty of misconduct, in the form of referee abuse, while a spectator at a Watters Cup match between Hampstead and Celtic recently.

The panel found that the abuse was deliberate and sustained, having occurred at the end of the match when the referee was making his way to the changing rooms.

In reaching their decision, the panel heard submissions from Willetts, the referee, his assistant and from a member of the team management from each team, who were in close proximity to

the incident.

A deduction was made from the penalty for the extensive and length voluntary work she has undertaken at the Hampstead Rugby Club and the remorse shown at the hearing.

Willetts had previously appeared before a rugby judicial panel in Canterbury in 2015 for a similar misconduct incident which also involved a referee.

On that occasion she received a suspended fine – the previous offence was taken into account in determining the sanction for the most recent incident.

The judicial panel were clear in their summation that there is no place for any form of abuse at rugby matches. Referees at this particular level are volunteers and are entitled to respect from all persons participating in or attending matches.

“We’ve made great strides in the last few years with the way people are behaving on the sidelines at rugby matches,” he said.

“Initiatives like the Zip It campaign and others have seen significant improvements.

“So, to have a situation like this where someone who has clearly given so much time to the sport at a club level up in front of the judiciary for misconduct is extremely disappointing.”

A Hampstead Rugby Club spokesperson agreed with Patterson’s sentiments around the contribution that Willetts had made to rugby in the district.

“We are immensely proud of what she has given to the club, the community and the game of rugby over many years,” they said.

“It’s a shame that an incident like this has occurred because rugby really is her life.

“We feel that as an organisation

we have made massive in-roads into improving the etiquette and behaviour of the people on our sidelines and we continue to actively promote the right kind of behaviour.

“We understand that passion and emotion can be high on the sidelines, but equally understand that there is need to be aware of the potential damage comments can make.

“We will be doing everything we can to ensure that as a club we are supporting all our members, supporters, players and parents to be better people in regard to their actions while enjoying rugby.”

The ban is effective immediately and covers all matches under the governance of the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union and New Zealand Rugby.

All parties involved have seven days to appeal the penalty handed down.

Water plea Auckland’s Watercare Services has repeated its plea to residents to shorten their showers to help save water.

Water supply dams in the Hūnua and Waitākere ranges are down to about 60 per cent of their capacity. The historic average for June is 84 per cent. International medal haul for Ashburton’s Arnica

Arnica Copland might be just 10, but already she’s making a name for herself internationally in the world of rhythmic gymnastics.

She’s recently home from competing in Italy where she earned herself bronze and silver medals and where she caught the eye of international coaches.

With her Olympia Ashburton team-mates Maisy Bowan, Madison Townshend and Marama Harrison, Arnica headed to Italy, testing their skills against competitors from several European countries including Russia, Lithuania and the Ukraine.

Coach, Michelle Smith-Copland said the competition was an opportunity for the young gymnasts to experience an international competition, medals were a bonus.

“We weren’t too sure what to expect and it was a huge learning experience for the girls. We were just there to do the best we could.

Winning medals was a huge surprise,” she said.

The gymnasts competed in age groups and Arnica won a silver medal in the freestyle section and a bronze for her ball routine.

After the competitions wrapped up the gymnasts attended a training camp where they worked with several European coaches.

While her students attended several training sessions each week at her school, that fell well short of the work expected of young gymnasts in many Euro-

pean countries, Smith-Copland said.

“It’s a sport that takes so much time because repetition is necessary to become good at routines.”

Second chance for water sculpture

Community anger and the determination of a handful of Ashburton District councillors may save the day for Ashburton’s town centre water feature.

At last week’s district council meeting when his fellow councillors voted to move the feature to the Ashburton Domain, Neil Brown objected. The feature belonged in the town centre, it was part of the townscape and told the story of the district’s relation-

ship with water, he said.

He was supported by councillors Russell Ellis, Mark Malcolm and Selwyn Price but they did not have the numbers to carry the day.

Brown was determined not to give up and immediately set about gathering enough support to have that decision put on hold and for the issue to come back to the council table.

He got the numbers. Russell Ellis and Mark Malcom were clear supporters, but two who initially

supported the relocation, Leen Braam and Stuart Wilson jumped ship and supported Brown. Price elected not to add his name.

Those five councillors have now signed a notice of motion to revoke the council decision on June 27 to move the sculpture to the Ashburton Domain.

No less than one third of elected members must sign a notice of motion to overturn all or parts of a previous council resolution.

council’s August meeting, but the draft Ashburton Domain Development Plan will still be considered by the council’s service delivery committee in an open meeting on July 25.

A recommendation on that plan will go to the August 15 meeting.

This will enable the draft development plan to take into account the future of the water sculpture before it goes out for public consultation.

Overturning the council resolution was a win for democra-

cy, Brown said, and councillors could now back up, take a pause and discuss the options in an informed way.

When plans for the town centre were consulted on there was no suggestion the water feature would be removed, that document talked about what should be in there not what should be taken out, Brown said.

“The council has moved faster than the public wanted. We haven’t taken the public with us on this.”

Demolition to start on Monday

Baring Square east might be the most popular spot in town over the next few weeks as demolition crews begin the deconstruction of Ashburton’s County Council building and Methodist church hall.

The start to the demolition won’t see bricks and mortar tumbling from day one, however.

Frews Contracting staff will be on site on Monday morning to begin the removal of a small amount of asbestos, then items the council wants will be taken out before salvagable materials from the old county building are taken.

One of the first tasks will be to locate and remove the building’s foundation plaque and time capsule and once found, they will be handed over to the council, assistant project manager Hayden Shivers said.

The demolition of buildings to clear the way for the new complex will be a staged project. The interior of the county building will be stripped first and while it is being demolished, the Methodist Hall will be stripped out and then demolished, he said.

There will be two diggers on site for the demolition, and once they start, progress will be swift.

“They’ll be on the ground in two or three days,” Shivers said.

The demolition and site clearance will be completed in September, and while it’s a big job, it lines up with a large number of similar projects Frews have completed.

Reinforced concrete from the building will be crushed to be used later on in the rebuild project.

Work on the district’s new civic centre and library to be built on the site will begin next year and is likely to take two years to complete.

For decades the old County Council building has been a landmark on the corner of Baring Square east and Havelock Street, but demolition is about to start on this building and the Methodist Church hall to the left to make way for a new Ashburton District administration centre and district library.

“It creates a whole of town activity and provides a great chance to get out and experience the great things that are going on in Ashburton,” he said.

New challenges have been added to this year’s challenge card, ensuring returning participants have new activities to complete. Cards can be collected from council reception, the museum, library or EA Networks Centre.

The challenge runs until July 21.

Hospice moving to new home orry for Mid Canty

Hospice Mid Canterbury is on the move, across town to a new home where it will be able to expand the range of services it offers to its clients and their families.

From early September hospice will be operating from rooms in St Stephen’s Church complex, rooms previously home to Park Street Daycare.

This week Christine Wilson, manager of volunteer services was starting the hard task of packing up three years of business in Community House, ready for the move.

As demand for Hospice services grew so too did the need for more space, Wilson said.

And in their new home, likely to open in early September, Hospice will be able to offer an increasing range of services that will make life easier for both people with life limiting illnesses and for their carers and families.

“This place is a great fit for us.

It’ll allow us to expand what we do. Our client base is growing and we’re now supporting about 48 clients and their families as well,” she said.

With its new centre covering several rooms, there will be space dedicated to massage therapy

It will provide an opportunity for people to view videos and listen to speakers so they can go on holiday without leaving their armchair, Wilson said.

Music, art and pet therapy sessions are also planned and wellbeing and exercise classes will also become part of the services programme.

Education will continue to be a big part of the Hospice service, she said.

“It’s about making people aware of death and dying, of understanding how much a natural part of life it is and that it’s something you have to accept.”

The additional services will be made available over the coming months and will provide yet another level of support.

The move to Park Street will also bring with it a change of name, with the new centre to be known as Hospice Base. The move has been supported by the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust and an open day will be held once the new centre is open.

Hospice Mid Canterbury was established in 2015, its Community House office opened in 2016 and its growing client numbers indicated how much awareness of the group had grown in the community, Wilson said.

“We’re very careful not to be in people’s faces, but we want people to know we’re here if they need us. You often don’t know you need support but you can be as involved with our services as much or as little as you need.”

Apart from two paid staff and contract therapists, Hospice is run with a large team of volunteers.

“They are very special, an amazing group,” she said.

Ruralco’s in-store days get the big tick

An overflowing sales book and plenty of positive feedback has delighted Ruralco staff as they celebrate 25 years of their in-store days.

Ruralco CEO Robert Sharkie said sales had been beyond expectations.

“Yesterday (Thursday) the sales figures exceeded all expectations, and we had really good feedback from customers,” he said.

“We also had the awards evening for the suppliers and that was really well received and we got really good feedback there as well.”

Sharkie said around 900 people were there for lunch on Thursday, and that the number would reach around 1000 on Friday.

Three suppliers received awards for their stalls at the event, and more than 50 received special recognition awards for contributing to the event for more than 10 years.

Committed to living wage

Ashburton business, Real Estate New Zealand has joined the growing number of companies around New Zealand who have committed to paying their staff a living wage.

The living wage rate is voluntary and for 2019 has been calculated to be $21.15 per hour, $3.45 more than the minimum wage set by the Government and currently $17.70.

Company owner/director Trevor Hurley said the living wage concept fitted nicely with his company’s drive towards being socially responsible.

We decided at the start of the year to apply to be accredited un-

der the Living Wage Aotearoa New Zealand Incorporated movement because of our social responsibility stance and we wanted to give our employees a better deal than what the minimum wage provides, Hurley said.

“The response from our employees has been amazing. I feel they, themselves, feel better appreciated from an employee/employer point of view and most of all from the personal and family perspective.”

A side benefit of adopting the living wage rate was a better mutual relationship of trust and general workplace efficiency, he said.

“They all feel part of a company that has their back and therefore a family type of relationship has

formed which is great for all concerned.”

As a company RENZ supported numerous local and national organisations and events and for several years had been donating to the Heart Foundation of New Zealand from every property deal it clinched.

The first living wage campaign was launched in 2012 in Auckland and in Wellington followed by other local networks around the country.

A living wage is defined as he income necessary to provide workers and their families with the basic necessities of life and enable them to live with dignity and to participate as active citizens in society.

In April 2013 an incorporated society was formed called Living Wage Movement Aotearoa NZ with a governance body and membership. It is not affiliated to any political party .

The first living wage rate for New Zealand was $18.40 per hour.

This was updated the following February 2014 to $18.80 per hour, in February 2016 to $19.80, in February 2017 to $20.20 and in April 2018 to $20.55.

RENZ may be only the second business in the Ashburton District to officially declare itself committed to paying staff a living wage. Labour List MP Jo Luxton, previously owner of Hinds Headstart Pre-School, made that commitment in 2016.

Dismantling and reassembling Ashburton’s town centre water feature is likely to be a far more complex job than the Ashburton District Council anticipates, says an ex-staff member who was involved in its construction.

Paul Hefford was the council’s services engineer in the 1990s when the council decided to install the sculpture. He was involved in design work on the concrete and steel structures in which the precast pieces were installed.

This was a significant piece of work, he said and he believes the cost involved in dismantling the sculpture and then recreating the base will be considerably higher than the council’s $40,000 to $50,000 estimate.

Taking the individual parts of the sculpture off the base may not be as easy as anticipated, either, Hefford said.

The forms are joined to the base with epoxy cement and it’s anyone’s guess how easily they can be lifted without damage.

There would also be a reasonable expense involved in recreating the pumping and filtration system, he said.

While he’s not supporting its removal, Hefford said if the council did take this option, he would be disappointed if it was tossed on the back of a truck and dumped.

“The million dollar question is, can it be taken out, can it be rebuilt,” he said.

The water feature’s creator Ian Trousdell is unsure how well the cast pieces that make up the water feature will survive removal and relocation. If any are broken, the moulds used to create these are no longer in New Zealand.

Removal of the water feature is on the council’s radar to clear the way for the redevelopment of Ashburton’s town centre and the creation of unimpeded pedestrian and cycleways along the East Street green.

Working dogs still in demand The face of farming in Mid Canterbury might be changing as dairy cattle overtake sheep as the district’s number one livestock, but that change has had little impact on the need for good farm dogs.

This week’s 63rd PGG Wrightson dog sale, held in the Mayfield Showgrounds saw the highest ever price fetched, $10,000.

This was paid for a heading dog, twoyear-old Jack, sold to Joe Catherwood of Charing Cross. Jack was sold by South Canterbury retired farmer Peter Boys.

Prices generally were described as strong by sale organiser Greg Cook.

The average across the sale was $3900.

Both the number of dogs entered in the sale and the number of registered buyers was up on last year and the overall quality of the dogs was very good, Cook said.

Only three out of the 43 dogs entered were passed in, failing to meet reserve and one of those was a top dog, he said.

Sellers came from across the South Island with one buyer from Hawke’s Bay.

Bank moves will sting dairy farmers

come at a time when farmers are already struggling with non-debt related costs, reduced access to capital and rising interest rates.

“Some farmers are at risk of becoming financially unviable and may eventually be forced to exit dairying.”

This impacts regional economies and puts Fonterra at risk of reduced milk supply and underused and/or stranded assets, it said.

The proposed five-year implementation period is also extremely short, it said.

Fonterra-commissioned research showing the extra cost to the average farm would be $50,794, based on interest rates being 125 basis points higher.

Because most farms pay interest only, if they shifted to include principal repayments, the extra cost would jump to $155,558 per farm.

Dairy Holdings, which operates 75 farms in the South Island, said some trading banks are already hiking interest rates by up to 50 basis points on fixed-term loans and margins above wholesale floating rates when existing debt matures.

The same cannot be said for New Zealand’s two biggest cities.

Auckland’s regional fuel tax kept even the cheapest stations above $2 and Wellington’s much anticipated Waitomo self-service station failed to push prices as low as was hoped.

While the stations selling fuel at under $2 per litre are quite spread out, the citizens of Rotorua have six to choose from.

In what has been a long-term trend, overall prices remain higher in the South Island, where only two stations have dipped below the $2 mark.

These low prices come about a year after New Zealanders faced rapidly rising prices.

Between May and October last year, fuel prices rose steadily and sparked concerns among some commentators that they could breach the $3 mark.

This did not, however, come to fruition. Fuel prices trended downward from October through January, lifting the growing concerns in a nation still overly dependent on their cars.

Following the international price of oil, the average petrol price has grown by nearly 20 cents a litre since January but this is still down from the record highs of 2018.

International data out yesterday indicated that Kiwis could be in line for further drops in the cost of petrol as oil prices declined off the back of growing economic woes.

increase in oil prices due to the standoff with Iran, but the market has instead responded more markedly to signs of slowing global growth.

On Thursday, British special forces seized a super tanker off Gibraltar carrying Iranian oil to Syria, triggering a diplomatic row, but the tensions weren’t enough to lift prices.

Oil was instead down for the week after plunging 4.8 per cent on Tuesday, its worst decline right after an OPEC meeting in more than four years.

While the group’s Secretary-General Mohammad Barkindo described the drop as an “anomaly”, Bank of England Governor Mark Carney warned of dangers from rising protectionism around the world and said there could be a “widespread slowdown” that may

require a major economic-policy response.

“You have these very real concerns that demand growth is weakening,” Daniel Ghali, a TD Securities commodities strategist, said by phone from Toronto.

“We do think there is still a significant amount of upside risk in prices considering that Iran-US tensions are at a boil.”

A decline in global oil prices should have the local impact of a drop in petrol prices. And this will have broader economic impacts.

Falling fuel prices reduce transport costs on almost all consumer goods, as well as air travel and production costs for anything made of plastic or synthetic materials.

Lower fuel prices also mean that more money is left in consumers’ pockets for other spending, often stimulating the economy.

“Our initial estimates are that the proposals could – at least in the short term – result in approximately a 10 per cent decrease in profit for the agriculture sector,” Rabobank New Zealand said in its submission.

The Reserve Bank this week released almost all of the 161 written submissions on proposals requiring lenders to hold more high-quality capital to mitigate the impact of a severe financial crisis. It plans to publish a response and the final decisions on the proposals in November.

The central bank wants to set a tier 1 capital requirement equal to 16 per cent of a lender’s risk-weighted assets for the big four and 15 per cent for all other lenders.

As a child Simon O’Neill played rugby and would not have been caught dead singing. But his doctor’s advice to improve his lung capacity set him on a new path. Susan Sandys reports.

pera star Simon O’Neill was back where it all began this week, at his home in Ashburton.

The 47-year-old tenor had an almost sell-out crowd in awe at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Thursday night, as the venue reverberated with his powerful voice, bringing classics to life such as selections from Pearl Fishers, Madame Butterfly, Don Carlo, Otello and Tosca, and one of the best-known arias of all time, Nessun Dorma.

O’Neill was in his element, doing something he wishes he had done more of in recent times – performing in front of a home crowd, including his old school friends, family and many acquaintances from his years growing up.

Simon O’Neill in Concert is on tour throughout New Zealand and Ashburton was the premier event, representing the first time he has performed in the town for about four years.

O’Neill’s path to becoming an opera star started when he was just nine, when he visited the doctor for asthma.

Dr Munns told his mother Gabrielle that her son should swim and take up a wind instrument.

He soon joined the Ashburton Silver Band, learning the baritone and euphonium.

It instilled in him a love of music and he also took up piano.

His parents always thought he had a good boy soprano voice, but he generally shied away from performances.

“I played rugby, I wouldn’t have been caught dead singing,” he said.

He started to get over that as he got into high school at Ashburton College. While in the First XV and a cricketer and basketball player, he became a keen participant in musicals written and directed by music teacher Gordon McGee and English teacher Roderick Lonsdale.

Teacher Robert Aburn soon came on board to lead the music department.

Aburn had a great influence on O’Neill, inspiring him in his singing. At the age of about 15 he joined the Phoenix Choir and an acapella group called Steve and the Fat Boys.

In 1989 he auditioned for the New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir and got in, all of a sudden finding himself among the best young singers from high schools throughout New Zealand.

“It put me into a new echelon of music making, particularly singing.”

Music was always going to be his career path, but he had intended to follow in his mother’s footsteps, and those of his “heroes” Aburn and McGee, and become a teacher.

“I had no idea I would be travelling the world singing in all these places, my dream was to be a high school music teacher.”

He aimed to study classical singing at the University of Otago or the University of Canterbury, but he did not get in on auditions.

One of the panel he was auditioning in front of at Otago was renowned pianist Terrence Dennis, who is now accompanying O’Neill for the Kiwi concert tour, alongside fellow famous opera star Ian Paterson.

“Now we perform all around the world together,” O’Neill said of Dennis.

“And I always remind him how he didn’t take me into singing in 1990, and he laughs.”

But O’Neill has no hard feelings

on the matter.

“I’m sure I did a very, very poor audition,” he said.

He decided to study music instead, but was able to change to singing as his major in the second year. He worked his way through Otago with holiday jobs in Ashburton at the local freezing works, where he would sing along as he worked on the chain.

Developing his opera voice became his main goal, as he revelled in compositions from the greats such as Handel and Mozart.

O’Neill went on to complete an honours degree at Victoria University in Wellington, where he worked as a singing waiter at a restaurant in the capital. He would get $50 extra each night for adding his vocals to the hospitality role.

In 1995 he was invited to sing at Auckland Opera in the Park, a performance which put him on the opera industry radar.

Before tens of thousands of

people he stunned crowds alongside Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and his parents were there. “It was magic,” recalls Gabrielle today.

The same year New Zealand Post featured him on the $1 stamp and O’Neill’s proud dad Brian bought 100 of them and had them framed.

Shortly after O’Neill won a Fullbright scholarship and went to New York to train at the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School of Music.

He grew to love the city and was devastated on 9/11, when he watched from a nearby high-rise building as the twin towers crumbled to the ground.

Classes were cancelled that day, but the next day he went to a singing lesson with a Juilliard teacher, despite the smell of burning drifting up throughout Manhattan.

“We couldn’t really concentrate, but we did it anyway.”

He was in young artists’ programmes and performed in small

opera companies, before getting his big break in 2004.

After an audition at the Metropolitan Opera in New York he became the understudy to Placido Domingo.

“From then my life just took off, I have been so grateful for my whole life with music.”

O’Neill is now based in Auckland and tours around the world, entertaining audiences of thousands, including royalty and celebrities, in some of the most magnificent opera houses and theatres.

Renowned internationally as the Wagnerian tenor of his generation, he is a vehicle for the magic of opera, an art form which has the power to move hearts and souls, if not heaven and earth.

But it is not applause or plaudits which inspire O’Neill, rather it is getting his performance right every time. “It’s just about the music for me. It moves me and I love it to move the listener as well,” he said.

Water feature TELLS

Ashburton’s town centre Three Rivers water feature tells the story of water and its importance to the district, but the feature could soon be dismantled and moved to the Ashburton Domain. Inset – The original design concept sketch.

When the Ashburton District Council decided it would relocate Ashburton’s town centre water feature to the Ashburton Domain, there was an outpouring of community concern.

Also concerned about the relocation is its designer Iain Trousdell. He tells reporter Sue Newman the story behind the hotly debated water sculpture.

A

shburton’s controversial town centre water feature owes its life to the determination of one man – David Askin.

When he arrived in town more than 30 years ago, he brought with him the experience of installing a similar feature in Cambridge. With Ashburton’s town centre up for a revitalisation project, David believed the townscape would benefit from having a similar feature and in late 1993, he asked artist Iain Trousdell to present ideas at an Ashburton District Council meeting.

Iain was happy to oblige but he knew how difficult it would be to get councillors to commit to spending money on something that would have aesthetic rather than practical use.

“I didn’t have any real brief but David persuaded the councillors to give me half an hour at a meeting.

“I walked into the council meeting room to conservative and sceptical councillors and told

them I wasn’t doing this for me, I was doing it for Ashburton,” he said.

While he didn’t have a fixed idea on what the water feature would look like, Iain managed to convince those 12 men and women that through his water sculpture he could bring all the qualities of the district into one small space.

“I outlined this to them as the mountains, the three rivers, the sea and the plains. I did a sketch and waved it around and asked them what they thought.”

Somewhat to his surprise, Iain found the councillors were enthusiastic and rather than sending him on his way with vague comments about discussing the idea and getting in touch, they took him out to Ashburton Airport, put him in a small plane and had him flown around the district.

“That gave me a good overview of the district, I said I could do a detailed plan and they said, ‘let’s do it’.”

They had a site at the head of Burnett Street in mind, seeing the water fountain as a way to close a dangerous intersection and a way to disguise the town centre railway line.

The concept was to create a sculpture that would represent the district, its mountains and rivers, one that would show the land with moving water sustaining it and ending with the coastal cliffs and the sea.

His design concept was based on relating the importance of water to the geographical and social environment as well as to the economy. The design was unique to the Ashburton District in that it showed its three rivers with exposed aggregate to show a shingle effect.

At the top of the feature the humped mound would bring in the Southern Alps as a water source. The flowing water was designed to range from vigorous to delicate swirls and eddies.

That the council now wanted

to relocate the sculpture came as a surprise to Iain. And when he heard the estimated cost of dismantling and reassembling the structure – up to $50,000 – he shook his head.

“I know enough to laugh about that. They need an engineer who knows exactly what’s involved to do a costing on it. I know what it costs to do a new kitchen and this is 20 times bigger than that.”

If the council was hell-bent on moving the sculpture, they would need to find the original engineering documents. While he created the forms and his staff provided measurements and requirements, council staff were the installers and builders of the foundations.

There is also a pumphouse with three pumps and electrics at the rear that would be part of the relocation.

The components for the water feature were created in the Hawke’s Bay and trucked to Ashburton. The moulds used for each piece are no longer in New

Zealand and that in itself creates an issue if any pieces are broken in the shift, Iain said.

Once the foundations were created Iain and his team were on site to install the heavy water design items and glue them in place.

Shifting the sculpture would require basically a redo of the whole project, except for casting, he said.

He was heartened to hear that there was strong community objections to shifting the fountain.

“They’re looking at the story of their district,” he said.

Foundations for the feature were dug in July, 1994, and it was completed in December that year.

It came with a $120,000 price tag.

The water feature was the first in a series of improvements in the town centre that included the chess board area alongside the information centre building. Both of these are tipped to disappear when the town centre revitalisation project is carried out over the next two years.

It’s election time, let the games begin I

n two weeks’ time we’ll get the first look at who our candidates in this year’s local body elections will be.

Nominations open on July 19 and the gamesmanship will now begin. Some will want their names in the ring early, others will hold off until the last minute.

Whichever way candidates play it, when they declare themselves as a candidate will have every thing to do with playing politics.

That game is all a bit ridiculous really. You’re either standing or you’re not and there’s not a lot of point in holding off until the last minute to lodge a nomination.

If anything late lodging puts a question mark over the integrity of your intention.

A last-minute bid can be

seen as holding off until you see what the opposition might be or it could be the old political trick of trying to fool your enemy – let them think you’re not standing until you drop the last-minute bombshell.

A good candidate is a considered candidate, one who has thought long and hard about what they’re doing and why. It’s not a last-minute decision.

It’s a big call putting your name in the election basket. It

means you are up there for public scrutiny and if elected, you know that the decisions you make the contributions you make – or not – to debate will be public fodder.

Anyone who stands for any local authority deserves commendation. And those who’re standing for all the right reasons – doing their best for their district rather than for self-glory, deserve a huge bouquet.

The tough part of an election is that not everyone wins a seat.

Sometimes the good people, the ones who understand their district and understand their community, miss out. It’s a game of chance in many ways or a game of how well your name is known.

Post election it becomes clear

who has done their homework and who has not. Just because there’a new team of elected members doesn’t mean the business of a board or council hits pause. Where one team signs off, the next must pick up – and quickly.

To help potential councillors come up to speed, council chief executive Hamish Riach has prepared a pre-election report. It’s a long document but it contains every bit of knowledge a new councillor will need to ensure they hit the ground running. It makes great and informative reading.

Coming up to speed is always a challenge for new councillors.

Some know exactly what they’re signing on for and they come well

prepared, they’ve followed issues, attended meetings, read copious quantities of council documents.

Others do not and that becomes quite clear very quickly as they struggle to keep up. Most of those eventually get there.

Unfortunately, there are always one or two who never quite hit the mark, who’re always a beat or three behind.

Just who’s up to the challenge and who is not, unfortunately, is never clear until after the votes are cast and the successful candidates sworn in. Then it’s too late.

However, if every candidate for council reads, digests and understands Riach’s report, they’ll be a long way down the track come the first council meeting in October.

Nature vs nurture Pt 1

H

is grandfather couldn’t quite understand why the school was saying it was having problems with his grandson.

To him, William was a friendly, boisterous nine-year-old – although at times he was a bit too talkative, he really enjoyed the holidays when William joined him in the truck and the chats they would have.

The school said William was abusive towards other kids, both verbally and physically, and he had even shouted at his teachers.

Grandad’s own opinion was that they couldn’t handle him and thought he would do better if he had a male teacher.

William’s mum was starting to say that William wouldn’t listen to her and was answering back more and more.

That’s why he offered to have William join him in the truck.

Nothing better than keeping a boy occupied is what he reckoned.

The above scenario is fiction, made up from real world situations I have come across in schools. It is not uncommon though.

When we hear of the ongoing tragic domestic violence this country carries as a sordid badge of shame, when we read and are exposed to horrific stories of women being abused by men, we always ask – how does this come to be?

One of the biggest theories that people have grappled with is nature verses nurture. I am firmly in the nurture camp. I believe there are many conscious decisions made that create an environment that leads to the rise of abusive males.

I am privileged to work with young children and their families. Most of this work is about positive events in a child’s life, however there are times when

I am involved with families in regards to negative events.

In this column I will outline the most common factors I have come across in those negative situations. These factors are a blend of many families and children. They are not based on just one or two experiences I have had and by sharing them it is not my intention to rip into parents and families.

I am simply stating what I have observed and the common factors from those observances.

Let’s start with the parents’ skillset, particularly the mother’s. Parenting is complex, what works for one child doesn’t necessarily work for another, even in the same family.

Here are some common factors around boys that could lead to them being abusive towards women.

■■ A mother wanting to be her son’s friend.

■■ A difference in discipline approaches between a mother and a father towards their son – traditionally she is more wanting to sort the problem, he is more wanting to eradicate the problem.

■■ A mother having only one or two responses to any negative behaviour.

■■ A mother giving in to what her son is asking for (outside of the necessities).

■■ A mother believing everything her son says.

■■ A son seeing his mother abused.

All of these factors are ones that the parents make a conscious decision about. They

Other common factors are: ■■ Changed family structure – at some point there is a significant change in the structure such as a partner leaving or a new one arriving. There could be the addition of other children or the boy becomes separated from his biological parents and raised by another family member.

■■ Yo-yo lifestyle – the home lifestyle has dramatic shifts in terms of work hours, income, eating and sleeping patterns (it is not uncommon for mothers to be dropping their children off to friends or family before six in the morning so that they can be at work), and many and then few extra adults involved in the family. In other words the daily life surrounding the boy is constantly changing.

■■ Addictions – we may think we know what drug and alcohol addictions are like but we only have a small idea of the impact they have on children. Addictions require money to feed them, which in terms drives adults to abnormal behaviours. Erratic behaviour, mood swings, egocentric behaviour

from the adult and abuse towards a child all severely impact their development.

■■ A mother who is addicted is one of the most tragic and saddest stories to know. They will go to great lengths to hide their addiction and lying and dishonest behaviour is simply part of how they operate.

Some other common factors I have seen that you may not think could contribute are: ■■ A dominant but absent father.

■■ An arrogant father who has a dismissive attitude towards women and teachers.

■■ Extra marital affairs and would you believe it partner swapping that is done with consent from the adults, (I’m not kidding, this happens more than you think!)

When a number of these factors are present in a boy’s life, I believe it raises the chances that a boy will develop abusive behaviours towards women, beginning with his mother.

The place of immigrants in our society hen thinking about this topic it is helpful to think about the society we hope to see in 50 years.

Just one culture would make life more simple. Having several cultures living in Ashburton increases the potential for misunderstanding. However it seems clear that many immigrants have excellent attitudes and values that enrich New Zealand.

The small number of problems, that the news media focus on, should not obscure a bigger positive picture. When people

get to know immigrants more closely they always speak very positively. Ignorance is bliss so they say.

So WWJD? This stands for What Would Jesus Do? When he walked on the earth he went to the outcasts, prostitutes and tax collecters for example. He was accused of being

their friend.

He sat beside a well and spoke to a woman of a hated race and told her some amazing things.

The heart of Jesus was and is for all people.

In the Old Testament speaking of people from other countries, they were told to “love them as yourselves” and the reason was that the Israelites had been foreigners in Egypt.

The New Zealand that we hope to see in 50 years is a country of harmony where everyone is respected. There will be different

values, lifestyles, religions and attitudes.

Difference is no threat to us, maybe just a challenge. Maybe an opportunity. The New Zealand of the future will not just depend on money. We see overseas some rich countries with shameful attitudes to groups of people.

Hopefully we will be doing well economically and hopefully we will be treating all people well.

Quake rattles California AP An earthquake that struck Thursday morning in the Mojave Desert rattling a large swath of Southern California was also felt in neighbouring Nevada.

There have been reports of minor cracks in buildings, power lines down, broken water mains, rock slides and fires in some areas. And at least one major highway in San Bernardino County has a 100mm crack, according to local fire department spokesman Jeremy Kern.

The quake measured with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 struck near the town of Ridgecrest, California, about 240 kilometres northeast of Los Angeles.

The quake was the largest in Southern California since the 7.1 Hector Mine quake struck the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base in 1999. The National Weather Service tweeted

Don’t call for questions please,” the LAPD said in a statement published on Twitter.

People from the desert to the Pacific coast in southern California reported feeling the tremor, including several Hollywood figures including Dwayne The Rock Johnson, talk show host Trevor Noah and film director Ava DuVernary.

“Been living in Los Angeles all my life. That was the longest earthquake I’ve ever experienced. Not jerky. Smooth and rolling. But it was loooong. It was so long I thought for the first time ever ‘Is this the big one?’” DuVernay tweeted.

“Damn. Respect Mother Nature. She’s the boss.”

MAD to limit production MAD, the long-running satirical magazine that influenced everyone from Weird Al Yankovic to the writers of The Simpsons, will be leaving newsstands after its August issue. Really. The illustrated humour magazine – instantly recognisable by the gap-toothed smiling face of mascot Alfred E Neuman – will still be available in comic shops and through mail to subscribers. But after its fall issue it will just reprint previously published material. The only new material will come in special editions at the end of the year. MAD will pull from nostalgic cartoons and parodies published over the magazine’s 67-year run.

Trump celebrates ‘greatest political journey’ AP President Donald Trump celebrated the story of America as “the greatest political journey in human history” in a Fourth of July commemoration before a soggy but cheering crowd of spectators, many of them invited, on the grounds of the Lincoln Memorial.

Supporters welcomed his tribute to the US military while protesters assailed him for putting himself centre stage on a holiday devoted to unity.

As rain fell on him, Trump called on Americans to “stay true to our cause” during a

programme that adhered to patriotic themes and hailed an eclectic mix of history’s heroes, from the armed forces, space, civil rights and other endeavours of American life.

He largely stuck to his script, avoiding diversions into his agenda or re-election campaign. But in one exception, he vowed, “Very soon, we will plant the American flag on Mars,” actually a distant goal not likely to be achieved until late in the 2020s if even then.

A late afternoon downpour drenched the capital’s Independence Day crowds and Trump’s speech unfolded in occasional rain.

The warplanes and presidential aircraft he had summoned conducted their flyovers as planned, capped by the Navy Blue Angels aerobatics team.

By adding his own, onehour Salute to America production to capital festivities that typically draw hundreds of thousands anyway, Trump became the first president in nearly seven decades to address a crowd at the National Mall on the Fourth of July.

Protesters objecting to what they saw as his co-opting of the holiday inflated a roly-poly balloon depicting Trump as an angry, diaper-clad baby.

Trump set aside a historic piece of real estate – a stretch of the Mall from the Lincoln Monument to the midpoint of the reflecting pool – for a mix of invited military members, Republican and Trump campaign donors and other bigwigs.

It’s where Martin Luther King Jr gave his “I have a dream” speech, where Barack Obama and Trump held inaugural concerts and where protesters swarmed into the water when supporters of Richard Nixon put on a July 4, 1970, celebration, with the president sending taped remarks from California.

Kanye to launch church Kanye West wants to set up his own church. The Bound 2 rapper is keen to launch his own religious organisation based on his weekly concerts, which he calls Sunday Service, and has reportedly bought a plot of land near his home in Los Angeles so that he can build pods for his followers to stay in for a few weeks at a time while they focus on his new modern faith. A source said: “Kanye wants to develop a church which introduces a new way to celebrate faith, bringing religion into the 21st century. His faith is massively important to him and he thinks this is the way to engage young people.”

Freed Australian quiet on detention details AP An Australian student on Friday thanked Swedish and his country’s diplomats for securing his release in North Korea but kept mum about what led to his week-long detention.

“I intend now to return to normal life but wanted to first publicly thank everyone who worked to ensure I was safe and well,” Alek Sigley said in a statement released by his family’s spokeswoman in Australia, a day after he flew from Pyongyang to Beijing and then Tokyo to be reunited with his Japanese wife.

He asked media to respect his privacy and said he has no plans to hold a news conference.

I’m very happy to be back with my wife, Yuka, and to have spoken with my family in Perth to reassure them I’m well,” he said in the statement.

He specifically thanked Sweden’s special envoy to North Korea, Kent Rolf Magnus Harstedt, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne for his release.

Swedish diplomats had raised concerns about Sigley with North Korean authorities in Pyongyang, where Australia

does not have an embassy.

In an interview with Swedish public radio, Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom said that Harstedt “raised the issue of this case at highest level” in North Korea and the release happened during his visit there.

Sigley’s father, Gary Sigley, a professor of Asian studies at the University of Western Australia, said that his son had been treated well in North Korea.

It was a much happier outcome than the case of American college student Otto Warmbier, who was convicted of attempting to steal a propaganda poster and imprisoned in North Korea. Warmbier died shortly after being sent back home to the US in a vegetative state in June 2017.

Stone deported from Iran Joss Stone has been deported from Iran on suspicion of attempting to sing in the strictly Islamic nation. The You Had Me singer has been on a quest to play gigs in every country in the world, and after unlikely shows in locations including North Korea and Saudi Arabia, only had Iran to tick off the list. However, her plans were scuppered by officials, who enforced Iran’s law that women cannot perform public concerts, and was ordered to leave after trying to enter the country. “Well, we went to Iran, we got detained and then we got deported,” the 32-year-old said in a video posted on Instagram.

■■ Pour into the paper cases and bake for 25 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from the tin.

Tick off the bucket list Braden Currie will be able to check something off his bucket list tomorrow.

It’s an event like no other, and one where he and his fellow triathletes will be cheered on by up to 260,000 spectators lining the roadsides from start to finish.

Currie is about to line up at the start of Challenge Roth, an 180km bike ride, 3.8km swim and 42km marathon in Germany known as the biggest triathlon in the world.

With a one-to-fifty ratio of athletes to spectators, Challenge Roth is regarded as the biggest and most coveted triathlon event in the world, and it’s a race that Methven’s Currie has always had

“The energy of this event for an athlete is second to none and a once in a lifetime experience that I have always wanted to experience,” he said.

Currie has stacked podium after podium results in 2019 and believes the crowds of Roth will only aid him in maintaining this consistency.

“I really enjoy that kind of stimulation around me, as long as I keep it in check and don’t over-do myself, this is a new sensory factor that will push me that little bit harder.”

It’s been a relatively quick turnaround for Currie after winning Ironman Asia-Pacific in Cairns last month.

Since then Currie and his family have been based in Fuschl, Austria preparing for Challenge Roth, which Currie reckons is one of the best training bases he’s ever experienced.

“Austria is incredible.

“All the training facilities are world class, including some of the best cycling I have ever experienced and a lakeside 25 metre stainless steel pool with an onsite gym,” Currie said.

“Our base-town of Fuschl is on the doorstep to endless trail running and the people and culture have made the experience unforgettable for my family and I.” Currie said his training has been going really well and he’s looking forward to the race.

“My main focus is still Ironman World Champs in October, but Challenge Roth has provided a great opportunity to get to Europe and race.

“I feel really lucky to have this opportunity and intend to make the most of it.”

race well and believes that his overall consistency as an athlete is the key reason for being able to work with a tight four-week turnaround since lronman Asia-Pacific, and still build on his performance.

“The biggest achievement for me over the last 12 months is the consistency I have been able to achieve in my training. The beauty of having this foundation behind me is that I know that if I plan the year well and I’m feeling good, that I’ll be there, in the mix.

“If I have a blinder of a day, I’ll be on the podium or at the top.”

Third straight loss for Celtic A

Defending champions Celtic A have fallen to their third straight loss in the Mid Canterbury Netball premier one competition, with Hampstead A landing a buzzer-beater to beat them 31-30 on Thursday night.

It was the biggest upset on the first night of the competition’s third and final championship round, and one that had Hampstead coach Janene McDowell jumping for joy.

In both round one and round two Hampstead A finished fourth on the six-team competition leaderboard, so to start the round that really mattered with a win like that was huge.

“We had a really solid game throughout the court, playing with structure, which was really important to see come together for the team,” McDowell said.

“Our mid-court worked hard throughout the game which linked both ends on attack and defence.”

Hampstead A held a handy lead for most of the game, but all teams knew Celtic A were never a team to be written off, and in the final quarter they stormed back to almost break Hampstead’s hearts.

Hampstead A led 25-18 at three quarter time, but made what seemed like a nervy start to the final quarter against a determined Celtic A side which was capable of making any team pay for the slightest mistake.

With only a couple of minutes to go and Hampstead supporters’ fingernails rapidly disappearing, Celtic A drew level at 29-all, having outscored Hampstead A 11-4 in eight minutes to do it.

Traded goals then made it 30all and Hampstead had the centre pass with just 16 seconds on the clock.

They quickly got the ball to shooter Georgia Burrows, who didn’t even have time to think about it.

The College A girls were in their best form on Thursday night, toppling Methven 41-23. through the hoop to give her side the win in the most dramatic of circumstances.

Things weren’t quite as dramatic in the night’s other two premier one games, with College A easily getting past Methven A, the team that only assured their future in premier one with a dramatic onegoal win in a promotion/relegation match on Tuesday night.

College A brought Methven A crashing back down to earth with a 41-23 win, while surprise frontrunners thanks to finishing on top in round two – United A – beat Mt Somers 29-22.

United A coach Claire Tappin said her side played well below what they put out on court the week before, when they beat Celtic A.

She said her side didn’t get the basics right when it came to things like passing and discipline.

She gave credit to Mt Somers though, saying their circle defence made life hard for her shooters, while down the other end Becky Marrett had a strong game, particularly shining in the final quarter, which Mt Somers won.

In premier two action on Thursday night, the team that lost that promotion/relegation game to Methven A – Southern A – lost their second game of the week, beaten by a determined Celtic B 32-25.

Methven B also picked up a win, beating Celtic C 32-29, while College B beat Hampstead B 3626.

■■BASKETBALL

Depleted squads not stopping great action Despite several teams being short of players, there was still plenty of exciting action on the court in the Mid Canterbury senior men’s basketball competition on Wednesday night.

In the first game Ashburton College faced off against Nomads.

A College lineup of six players took on Nomads in the first game of the evening, and the game started off with a hiss and a roar as both teams went basket for basket.

Mikal Johnston started hot, hitting four 3-pointers in the quarter.

However it was College that was able to take control and get

their fast break going, to lead 2717 after the first quarter.

College’s defence in the second quarter nullified the Nomads offence, who once again struggled to finish off opportunities, whereas College took theirs, extending the lead to 52-34 at the break.

From there College simply outpaced the Nomads team and by the end of the third quarter, the game was pretty much over as College were ahead 75-48.

The fourth quarter became loose as Nomads looked for ways to close the gap. It didn’t happen and College ran out comfortable winners 91-67.

The second game of the night

was another match-up between last year’s finalists Newlands and Team Donkey.

Once again Newlands went in with a depleted line-up due to injury, sickness and unavailability as opposed to Team Donkey’s large bench.

The game was hard-fought as both teams worked hard to wrestle control, with both teams going on mini runs only for the other team to come back at them.

After the first quarter, Newlands held a slender 20-19 lead.

In the second period they were able to stretch that lead to six points, 44-38 with a more controlled offence.

However like the good team that they are, Team Donkey forced their way back into the game.

Newlands were hampered by a couple of players picking up injuries making them more susceptible to Team Donkey’s ability on the break.

They intensified their defence and managed the 7-foot threat of Jason Greig well.

By the end of the third quarter they held a 62-61 lead.

After the break they managed to get on a roll and extended their lead to six points.

Every time Newlands came back, Team Donkey countered.

By then, Newlands had lost an-

other with an injury, so finished the game with four fit players and one not-so-fit player.

Team Donkey finished the stronger and ran out deserved winners 93-84.

Pip Johnston was excellent from the arc as he racked up 41 points for Team Donkey.

He was well supported by Cam Butler working hard with 12 points.

For Newlands, Marc Juntilla had another good game with his driving and long range shooting, and he was well supported

by Liam O’Connor who turned in yet another good all-round game.

All to play for at Mayfield

Methven have unexpectedly found themselves heading straight to the 2019 Watters Cup rugby final without even having to lift a finger today.

They were due to play Hampstead in today’s final round, where a win would have ensured a top-of-the-table finish and an easy ride through to the final, but a lack of players had resulted in Hampstead being forced to default.

That decision on Thursday night handed maximum points to Methven, resulting in them leapfrogging over Rakaia into first place, and sending Rakaia – the side which has the bye today – into the semi-finals to play the winner of what would now be the only senior rugby match played today, between Southern and Celtic.

The way things had panned out so far this season, it meant that the game between Southern and Celtic at Mayfield today is effectively a quarter-final.

For both teams it is a case of win and you were in the semi-finals, or lose and your season is over.

Heading into the match Southern are third on the points table on eight points courtesy of their win over Hampstead and bonus points picked up in their losses to both Rakaia and Methven, while Celtic are fourth on five points also thanks to a win over Hampstead and the one bonus point.

For both teams, being in a must-win situation today is not ideal, but it was a reality.

For Southern, it comes just weeks after they made the final of the combined competition, which they drew with Glen-

Mixed emotions filled the Methven senior rugby team’s changing rooms at the end of training on Thursday night, when they found out they were into the Watters Cup final.

Making the 2019 Mid Canterbury Rugby showpiece final was what they’d been aiming for, but they’d wanted to do it under their own steam and with some top performances, not through their opposition defaulting.

But that was what had happened.

Hampstead being forced to default their final round Watters Cup match today pushed Methven to the top of the table ahead of Rakaia, putting the Methven side straight through to the final on July 20, and leaving Rakaia to play in a semi-final against either Southern or Celtic.

“We need to hold onto the ball and starve them of the ball, and when they do get the ball we have to have good line speed and create mistakes,” Carr said.

Southern have the experience to get the job done, and while other teams have struggled with

injuries and sickness in recent weeks, they have been one of the more fortunate sides.

Last weekend’s game against Hampstead was the first where they’d had to bring in a senior B player.

For Celtic, it was a different story.

They’d entered this season with a squad light on experience, missing a lot of key players from their 2018 squad which lifted the Watters Cup for the first time in a number of years.

But one thing they weren’t light on was drive and they would not

be letting go of the Watters Cup willingly this season, so will head to Mayfield today ready to fight to stay alive in the competition.

Today’s match will kick off at the Mayfield Domain at 2.45pm, with the Dave White Memorial Cup also going on the line in the game.

The Max Gilbert Challenge Trophy, which Methven won off Celtic earlier in the competition, was also due to be put up for grabs in Methven’s game against Hampstead today, but it will now stay in Methven’s trophy cabinet for the winter.

Methven had been the form team of the Watters Cup, starting with a win over defending champions Celtic, before grabbing a last-gasp one point win over Southern, and last weekend downing Rakaia in a game where, had Rakaia won, they would have gone straight through to the final instead.

But, not playing today and then having to wait to find out the outcome of next weekend’s semi-final meant Methven now had two weekends of no game time heading into the biggest game of their season, and that wasn’t ideal, Kjestrup said.

“We had to announce to the guys at the end of training on Thursday night that the good news was they were going to be playing in the final, but the bad news was there’s no game this weekend, and they were pretty disappointed.

“It’s not how we wanted to go through to the final.

“We wanted to show everyone what we could do on the field, and

win each round,” Kjestrup said.

Today was meant to be sponsors day and ladies day at the Methven Domain, but with no senior rugby now set to be played, they’d had to postpone that, too.

“They would’ve put on a good display, so it’s a bit frustrating,” Kjestrup said.

The team will still head along to the Methven Domain today and have a bit of a run around with the Methven Bs, who were also not playing today as the draw had them playing Hampstead today too, but the Hampstead Bs were withdrawn from the competition a few weeks ago, turning that game in each round into a bye.

The Methven seniors would also take the opportunity to spend some time with Methven’s JAB teams today, and a camera person from The All Blacks Experience – a new partnership between New Zealand Rugby and Ngai Tahu Tourism which is set to open at Auckland’s SkyCity in May next year – will be on site filming what action was on.

Matt Groom – a prop who was also the team’s leading try scorer this year with 14 tries – today’s game no longer going ahead was extra disappointing.

Today’s game was due to be his 99th for the club, which, had Methven won and gone straight through to the final, would have made the final his 100th game.

But, now, the final would be his 99th game.

Today’s Methven team had a few players remaining from the side which lost the Watters Cup final in 2015, including Groom, and Kjestrup said they’d look to take some learnings from that campaign.

In that year, Methven also went straight through to the final and had the bye in the last round, meaning they had two weeks off heading into the final, like they would have this year.

Kjestrup said the feeling was that the two week break cost them in 2015, and they were determined the outcome would be different this time, whoever they played.

Finishing his time as Hampstead’s senior rugby coach with a default was not the way Shaun Bovey wanted to go out.

But that’s the way it had ended up, and no-one is more disappointed about it than him.

Bovey had planned on telling his team that he had resigned at the end of their final game of the season today, their last-round Watters Cup clash against Methven.

But, at training on Thursday night it became clear that Hampstead wouldn’t have enough players to field a team to face the black-and-whites.

Bovey said they knew they had a few players away, but heading into Thursday night training they thought they had 19 players.

That number wasn’t enough to be competitive, but enough to scrape by.

As the evening progressed, though, they realised they only had two front rowers, and some of the other players they had would have been playing while injured.

Bovey said defaulting was not an easy decision to come to, but they’d tried everything.

“We certainly tried every avenue, but there is a point where you can’t physically do any more,” Bovey said.

Bovey had spent two years coaching Hampstead with cocoach Craig Dwyer, and while they’d this year taken them to their best result in the combined competition in recent seasons – 16th spot – they hadn’t been able to break their now 10-year Watters Cup game losing streak.

Today’s game against Methven would have given Bovey and his boys one last shot at breaking the drought before it became 11 years, but instead they were finishing by notching up their second default of the season.

“It’s a pretty disappointing way to finish your tenure,” Bovey said.

Coaching Hampstead had been a great experience, though.

“As much as it’s been challenging, it’s also been rewarding, too.

“Once you get on the inside and you actually meet the players and give them the time of day and help them, they are a hell of a bunch of boys,” Bovey said.

He’d miss it, but said the time was right to move on.

And while he had another challenge in mind, he wasn’t yet able to confirm what that was.

He wished Hampstead all the best, and hoped whoever took his spot alongside Dwyer would continue to help the club move forward.

Crusaders eye threepeat

By Christopher Reive There’s been a buzz around the Crusaders’ camp this week with their eyes on a third consecutive title and a couple of freshly minted All Blacks in the squad.

Impressive backline duo Braydon Ennor and Sevu Reece were among the 39 players named in the first All Blacks squad of the year, hearing their names called out for the first time.

But while excitement levels were high, coach Scott Robertson has implored them to keep their eyes on the prize.

“The old Whatsapp groups have been fired up; love hearts and fist pumps over the last few days,” Robertson told Radio Sport’s D’Arcy Waldegrave. “[But] we moved on pretty quickly because we’ve got a job to do.”

The Crusaders will welcome the Jaguares to OrangeTheory Stadium in Christchurch tonight as they look to lock away the Super Rugby title for another year.

It’s a match-up that Robertson admits he didn’t expect when the season started, but one that is likely to be a very physical encounter.

The Jaguares impressed all season to finish on top of a tightly contested South African conference and showed they were more than capable of getting the job done at home or on the road.

“There aren’t many guys who would have said you’d be playing them [in the final] at the start of the season.

“You’ve got to give it to them.

“You’ve got the ability to front up when they do travel,” Robertson said of the Jaguares.

“We’re really impressed with them.

“It’s going to take all of, probably more, effort than against the Hurricanes.”

Robertson described last weekend’s semi-final thriller against the Hurricanes as “anything but a final”, with the high-intensity affair going down to the wire.

The side will be without star duo Ryan Crotty and Scott Barrett for the final, with Ennor replacing Crotty in the midfield and Mitchell Dunshea deputising for Barrett at lock alongside Sam Whitelock.

Exciting young outside back Will Jordan joins the bench for the final tonight.

Frustrating loss for AshHutt rugby girls AshHutt girls’ rugby coach Grant Elvines had just one word to sum up his side’s latest loss in the Aoraki secondary schools girls’ rugby competition, and that was frustration.

It was the most appropriate word to sum up his side’s 49-24 loss to Timaru Girls’ High School (TGHS) at Celtic on Wednesday evening, Elvines said.

TGHS came to town as the competition’s top-of-the-table side, and they showed why they are where they are, pouncing every time the AshHutt girls

made a mistake and scoring.

The combination Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College side simply gave away too much ball, and every time they did it cost them both when it came to focus, and points on the board.

Elvines said that in defence AshHutt produced a number of periods of play where he thought they might have been able to produce a comeback, but TGHS were quick to snuff out any opportunities that AshHutt might have created.

“The forwards ran with a lot of

endeavour and the backs threw it about a bit, but we were guilty of too many basic errors, and of missing far too many tackles,” Elvines said.

But, the AshHutt girls did manage to put together four pretty good tries to Emma Rollinson, Tara Mellish, and two to Madison Trusler-Clark.

“Ultimately though, we got outplayed, and the final score of 49-24 was a fair indication of the game,” Elvines said.

The girls’ competition will now be taking a break for two weeks

for the school holidays.

When it returns on July 24 AshHutt will be off to Timaru for a clash with Waitaki Girls’ High School, the team currently bottom of the table without a win to their names.

Meanwhile, that’s the position the Mid Canterbury Combined boys’ first XV find themselves in today, still bottom of the table in the Crusaders region secondary schools’ rugby competition, the UC Championship.

They are heading off to Christchurch today looking to

change that, but their opposition this week – Shirley Boys’ High School – are likely to pose another tough challenge.

The Shirley boys are currently sitting in 10th spot on the table with three wins from their nine games.

The UC Championship will also take a break over the holidays, and return on July 27 when Mid Canterbury Combined will again be on the road, this time to Rangiora High School, a team sixth on the table heading into this round.

In brief Hampstead on the up In their past two games, the Hampstead senior women’s hockey players have sent 19 goals crashing into the back of the net. They’ve hit a rich vein of form in round two which they hope will continue when they take on Craighead in Timaru today, in the Mid/South Canterbury senior women’s hockey competition.

Meanwhile the Wakanui men are on home turf today in the Mid/ South Canterbury senior men’s competition, playing Northern Hearts in what will be a top-of-the-table clash at the Ashburton hockey turf at 2.40pm.

Collegiate Squash Open A capacity field of 76 is battling it out on court at the Ashburton Collegiate Squash Club this weekend at the annual Collegiate Squash Open.

It was big improvement from last year, where the Collegiate tournament attracted disappointing entries due to being the last tournament on the Midlands calendar, club captain Kelly Wing said. So they’d brought it forward, and it had done the trick. Top seed in the men’s open grade draw is Geraldine’s Patrick Mulvihill, while ladies’ top seed is Christina Lima. Play got under way on Thursday night and continued last night, with games at both Collegiate and Celtic today, before finals tonight at Collegiate.

Ferguson vital for NZ

By Niall Anderson He was sorely missed against England, but Lockie Ferguson is set to make a timely return for the Black Caps’ semi-final at the Cricket World Cup. Ferguson was a late withdrawal from New Zealand’s 119-run defeat to England with a tight hamstring suffered in training, but Black Caps coach Gary Stead confirmed he was kept out of the clash more as a precaution, knowing that – miracle aside – a semi-final was already confirmed.

“Lockie will be fine – if it was a final or semi-final yesterday we possibly could have played him,” said Stead.

“He had a little bit of a hamstring niggle.

“It was very minor.

“We’ve had it all checked out, so are very confident he’ll be right to play.”

Ferguson has claimed the second-most wickets at the tournament, with 17 scalps at an average of 18.6, and a solid economy rate a tick under five an over.

His presence will be crucial for a Black Caps bowling attack which, without him, conceded their largest total of the World Cup against England at Chesterle-Street.

Without the mustachioed fast bowler whistling his rockets down, the New Zealand attack was carted all over the park by

England openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow.

The pair added 123 in just 18.4 overs – the first opening pair to blunt New Zealand’s new ball efforts – as the Black Caps had to utilise six bowlers before they finally got the breakthrough.

Tim Southee, playing in his first ODI since February, was understandably rusty in his return of 1-70, while the pace-bowling trio of Southee, Trent Boult and Matt Henry were arguably too similar in style, without the differentiator of Ferguson’s express pace.

Black Caps captain Kane Williamson acknowledged that his side missed the diversity Ferguson provides to the seam attack.

“He’s been outstanding throughout this whole tournament and a real point of difference for us in terms of the way he complements our bowling attack and coming in and bowling at 150km/h naturally is a great weapon to have. ‘“So did we miss him?

“Yes, he’s been so successful in the last eight games but, saying that, potentially we’d miss him more if we didn’t have him hopefully in another game’s time.”

So while England’s batsmen could breathe a sigh of relief at avoiding Ferguson’s examination, the Black Caps’ semi-final opponents – either Australia or India – will still need to prepare for his treacherous test.

Gayle leads Windies to victory in last match AP Chris Gayle failed with the bat but took a pivotal wicket in his disciplined bowling spell to help West Indies beat Afghanistan by 23 runs in his final Cricket World Cup match.

Afghanistan was on track to chase down a target of 312 when the 39-year-old Gayle, with his occasional offspin, trapped 18-year-old batsman Ikram Ali Khil in front of his stumps and

took out Afghanistan’s key man for 86.

It sparked a mini-collapse by the Afghans, who lost two more wickets in the next 13 balls to slip from 189-2 to 201-5.

They were dismissed for 288 on the last ball of the match, their highest total at a World Cup but still not enough to avoid returning home with a sweep of nine losses.

Gayle – making his record-tying 295th ODI appearance for

the Windies and last in World Cups – had bowling figures of 1-28 off his six overs to make up for only getting 7 off 18 balls with the bat. Gayle had needed 18 runs to top Brian Lara (10,348) as West Indies’ leading scorer in ODIs. Next-to-last West Indies ended the World Cup with two victories – from their first and last games – and moved level on five points with South Africa, which still has a match to play against Australia.

Junior league on again The Ashburton Barbarians are back on the hunt for some junior rugby league players, ahead of the start of the Aoraki Junior Rugby League competition. The Barbarians entered teams in the competition for the first time last year and found that rugby league was popular among Mid Canterbury kids, with a number of junior Barbarians teams taking to the field. The grades contested would be under-8, under-10 and under-12, and a meeting for anyone interested would be held at the Devon Tavern on July 16 at 7pm. Meanwhile, the Ashburton Barbarians seniors are at home today, playing the Halswell Hornets at Robilliard Park.

Table topping clash Mid Canterbury United are off to Christchurch today for a top-ofthe-table clash against the Halswell United 1964s in the Mainland Football division one competition.

MCUFC are unbeaten at the top, while the 1964s are second with MCUFC having handed them their one and only loss earlier this season.

Meanwhile the MCUFC division five team is also in Christchurch today, taking on Universities AFC Lincoln, as are the Methven FC Reserves, against Universities AFC Burgundy Beavers in division six. The Methven FC Seniors are at the Methven Domain today, hosting the Coastal Spirits D3s.

Netball team named The Mid Canterbury senior A netball team for 2019 has been named.

Coach Claire Tappin named her team late this week, following trials on Sunday, and the team will now start preparing for a Selwyn field days event on July 28, and the Hanan Shield tournament in Waimate on August 4. Lucky loser ousts Kerber AP Lauren Davis wasn’t even supposed to be playing in Wimbledon’s main draw, let alone upsetting defending champion Angelique Kerber in the second round.

It’s been quite a week.

The 95th-ranked Davis lost in the last round of qualifying and figured that was that.

But then another player withdrew from the tournament, opening up a spot, and the 25-year-old American got in – a “lucky loser” in tennis parlance.

Yesterday, Davis turned things around after a poor start and knocked off the No. 5-seeded Kerber 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 to get to the third round and equal her best showing at any Grand Slam tournament.

“I wouldn’t say that I was surprised, because I always believe in myself.

“She’s obviously an incredible champion; I have immense respect for her,” Davis said.

“I definitely believe in myself and believe that I can hang with these girls and beat them.”

She seemed to move around just fine despite a heavily wrapped left knee.

“The tape is a lot worse than it looks.

“It’s just a little soreness with my meniscus on my left side,” Davis said.

“It’s really just prevention at this point, especially on the grass where it can be slippery potentially.”

Davis was by far the more aggressive player, compiling a hard-to-believe edge of 45-13 in total winners against Kerber, whom Davis called “a human backboard.”

This continues what’s been an up-and-down season for Kerber, who won her third career major championship a year ago at the All England Club by beating Serena Williams in the final.

Kerber hasn’t won a title since.

“I’m disappointed.

“Of course it’s not the way I would like to finish here or to play here,” the German said.

“But you sometimes have days like that.

“You have to accept it. You have to learn from it”.

Just a couple of other ways in which 15-year-old sensation Coco Gauff is gaining attention at Wimbledon: Her third-round match overnight against another unseeded

player was scheduled for Centre Court, and she was picked to play mixed doubles by someone who dumped his original partner in that event.

First, Gauff was the youngest player to qualify for Wimbledon in the professional era.

Then the American went out on No. 1 Court and beat Venus Williams, who is 24 years older and had won four Grand Slam titles before Gauff was born.

And then she beat 2017 semi-finalist Magdalena Rybarikova, again on No. 1 Court, and again in straight sets.

Now she’ll face 60th-ranked Polona Hercog at the most hallowed tennis arena anywhere.

Gauff is entered in the mixed doubles tournament with Jay Clarke, who explained after losing to Roger Federer in singles on Wednesday that he switched things up after initially planning to play with fellow Brit Harriet Dart.

“I made the decision a few days ago now to play with Coco, because ... you play with a big name or a past champion,” Clarke said.

With the Knights missing halfback Mitchell Pearce and prop Daniel Saifiti (State of Origin) and fullback Kalyn Ponga (injury), the Warriors will look to take advantage of a weakened Newcastle side to try and keep even a glimmer of hope in their season.

“We’ve got to get these points,” Tuivasa-Sheck said.

“We’ve got to get a run going.”

The Warriors go into a period on their schedule where they will be away from Mt Smart Stadium for the best part of a month, with their next four games being away to Newcastle and the Brisbane Broncos, in Wellington against the Cronulla Sharks, and away to the Parramatta Eels.

It’s not necessarily the worst thing for the Warriors, who have not won at Mt Smart Stadium in their past five matches at the venue, winning just two of seven this season at what used to be their fortress.

On the whole, they’ve performed better this season when on the road, with three wins and some agonisingly close defeats to some of the league’s top teams.

“On the road, we need to start making it happen,” Tuivasa-Sheck said.

A ridge of high pressure builds over New Zealand.

Unsettled southwesterlies develop over New Zealand tomorrow, then winds turn northwest over the South Island on Tuesday as a front approaches from the Tasman Sea. The front is expected to slowly move north across the South Island on Wednesday.
