Red letter day for historic buildings BY SUE NEWMAN

A deal that will see Ashburton’s Methodist Church saved from a date with the bulldozer is a red letter day for the preservation of Ashburton’s older buildings, says Historic Places Mid Canterbury chairwoman Julie Luxton. The church was handed a lifeline last week when Ashburton District councillors voted to build the new civic centre and library in Baring Square east on two sections owned by the church, land on which the old county council building is sited and privately owned land to the
rear of the county building. This deal spared the church and at the same time will free up money for its restoration from the sale of the two sections the Methodist community owns. “It’s a good solution, a good result for the church,” Luxton said. The chosen site, however, was not without a downside, as it would mean the county building would be demolished, she said. “But we are very happy about the church’s future.” Historic Places had offered the services of one of its members, an urban
designer, free of charge to the church to help in whatever way it could with the restoration, Luxton said. “Any help we can give we’ll be happy to give.” The site chosen for the complex includes an historic brick building on Havelock Street currently home to Historic Places Mid Canterbury. It will be incorporated in some way into the new build.
