Hinds dairy farmer Matt Bell joined an impressive line-up of Mid Canterbury winners of the ANZ Young Farmer Contest when he took the 2015 title on Saturday night.

In a contest that went down to the wire, Mr Bell snatched the title from Sully Alsop by a mere two points on a countback.

“It was pretty tense, Sully and I tied at the end, so it went to a countback on the practical component,” Mr Bell

said. It’s been a long slog for the Hinds Young Farmers Club member, and his second crack at grand final level.

He freely admits he would never have stood on the winner’s podium without the support of his fiancée Samantha.

“Realistically it’s been three years of build-up to this – when I made grand finals the first time it was very much a learning curve, but this time we were there to win and we did it,” he said.

“It’s very much a ‘we’ thing – we won the contest, not I won – it’s been

a huge team effort. Samantha’s been phenomenal in supporting me for the last three or four years, I’ve no doubt I couldn’t have done it without her.”

Mr Bell said he was “over-run with emotion” in the moments after he realised he had won the contest, but it really hit home when last year’s winner David Kidd bestowed him the cloak of honour.

Affleck and Garner present united front Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have put on a united front since going public with their divorce news by jetting off for a family holiday in the Bahamas. The Hollywood couple announced their split last week, revealing they have separated and are planning to divorce, but they insisted they remain on good terms for the sake of their children. After the news was announced, Affleck and Garner appeared to prove they are still amicable by jetting off on a family holiday together with their children, Violet, nine, Seraphina, six, and Samuel, three. The family has been spotted soaking up the sun in the Bahamas, according to People.com. A source tells the publication, “They were together as a family that day (the news was announced). The family felt it was important to be together and they were together. The family is united and, no matter what, will protect the kids.”

Bringing fairytale romance to life A Kiwi and an Aussie have been tasked with bringing the fairytale romance of Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark to life in a new TV movie. New Zealand actor Ryan O’Kane is set to play Denmark’s dashing crown prince, who met his Aussie love in a Sydney pub during the 2000 Summer Olympics. Australian actor Emma Hamilton will star as Tasmanian-born Mary Donaldson in Network Ten’s Mary, The Making of a Princess. Filming for the biopic is scheduled to kick off from July 20.

Champ dethroned at hot dog contest Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, who for eight straight years gobbled up all comers in the famed Nathan’s hot dog eating contest in New York, has finally met his match. Chestnut, 31, was defeated by Matt Stonie, 23, his longtime rival in the niche competitive eating circuit. Stonie devoured 62 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, two more than Chestnut at the hugely popular July 4 contest, held each year on the boardwalk of Brooklyn’s Coney Island and broadcast live on television. It was ketchup-flavoured revenge for Stonie, who was runnerup to Chestnut in last year’s showdown. The women’s contest was won by veteran competitive eater Miki Sudo, who wolfed down 38 hot dogs. That was seven more than secondplaced finisher Sonya Thomas, a former champ with multiple records under her belt.

Hunt for the best burgers The best burgers in New Zealand are mainly found in the South Island, say travellers in a recent poll. TripAdvisor travellers voted the top 10 burgers around the country, but only two North Island burger joints made the list. Coming in at number one was Fat Tui Burger Kitchen & Bar in Alexandra. Fat Tui is a seasonal establishment operating from a converted old bus serving up “off the hook” burgers. “Off the hook, seriously fantastic burgers and fish and chips. You can’t go past this place.

The historic vineyards, wine cellars and champagne houses where the world’s most famous sparking wines are produced have been listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO. In a double victory for French wine, the vineyards of Burgundy were crowned with the same prestigious distinction on Saturday by the UN cultural body in the German city of Bonn. UNESCO said the champagne’s world heritage status covers “the places sparkling wine was developed using a second fermentation method in the bottle from the beginning of the 17th century until its early industrialisation in the 19th century.”

Body found in harbour

By John Weekes A man’s body was found floating in Wellington Harbour yesterday near a popular waterfront dining spot.

Members of the public saw the body near Queens Wharf and alerted emergency services about 10.40am.

The police maritime unit helped recover the body.

Eyewitness Emma Pigou said she saw police earlier attempting to retrieve the body from the harbour.

“I saw the cops pulling him out, or trying to,” she said.

Ms Pigou said the man was wearing blue jeans and a red fleece jersey with some blue colouring.

“Last time I saw, he was lying on the concrete,” she said.

“There were a lot of people on the wharf having a look.”

Part of the wharf beside Wagamama restaurant was cor-

doned off. It appeared the man’s body was brought onto the wharf before being taken to the nearby police maritime unit and national dive squad building.

Police were still at the scene after midday and the cordon remained in place.

Ms Pigou said ambulance staff were also at the scene earlier.

The cordon was immediately beside part of yesterday’s marathon route.

Police said the body was that of “an older male”.

The man’s identity and the reason or reasons for his death were not yet known.

In March, 20 year-old man Jamie Gibbon died after jumping some 45m off the nearby Hikitia waterfront crane after a night with friends in the city.

Mr Gibbon’s death has sparked calls for tighter security in the area.

■ NELSON DEATH

Community devastated A man killed at the weekend and those arrested in connection with his death all lived at the same hostel.

Bruce Andrew Mortimer, 46, died on Saturday night from injuries he sustained in an incident in Nelson’s Franklyn Village residential units about 2.30am.

Franklyn Village owner Liz Harris said staff and residents were devastated after Mr Mortimer’s death.

“This is a dreadful thing to

happen for our community.”

Ms Harris said the village’s manager was away at the weekend so she flew up from Christchurch to support staff.

She said she did not know Mr Mortimer personally but some staff members did.

Police arrested two local men aged 17 and 27. The two were charged with assault with intent to injure. They will appear in Nelson District Court today.

Prayer, help for George family

Support is pouring in for the family and friends of Cindy George and her three children who were found dead in a house in Thomson Street on Thursday.

Ms George along with Pio, 5, Teuruaa, 3, and Telyzshaun, 2, were thought to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning up to a week earlier. Fumes from a car left running to keep the battery “ticking over” in an adjourning garage were understood to have entered the house.

The Mid Canterbury Cook Islands community has spent the weekend preparing for the arrival of family from the Cook Islands, Australia and other parts of New Zealand.

They have set up base in the Tinwald Scout Hall, where a steady stream of visitors have been dropping off food and bedding.

Ms George’s aunt Ann Kiria said the final preparations for the tumatetenga (funeral) would be made today, when the pathology examination is completed.

The service will be held at the Tinwald War Memorial Hall, however Ms George and the children will first be taken to the scout hall where members of the Tiare Maori cultural group will form a guard

Ms George’s parents arrived in Ashburton from the Cook Islands last night to join her two older sisters from Auckland who have spent the weekend in Ashburton.

“We don’t know how many people we will be catering for at this stage, or for how long,”Mrs Kiria said.

“We are really grateful for all the help and support we are re-

ceiving.”

Bishop Pongia from Ashburton’s Church of the Latter Day Saints where Ms George and her children worshipped said yesterday’s service had been emotionally charged as the congregation shared memories and prayed for the family.

“Cindy has been coming to our church for five or six years,” he said.

“The children also came along – they were a beautiful

family.”

Bishop Pongia has been supporting Ms George’s family since the deaths were discovered. “I’ve been with them since day one and we will be there for them as long as they need support,” he said.

Vaccination call before flu season peaks The Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) is urging people to get vaccinated before the worst of the flu season hits.

Canterbury medical officer of health Dr Ramon Pink said Canterbury’s flu numbers typically peaked around September, so it was important people were

vaccinated quickly.

“It takes up to two weeks to develop immunity, so it is best to get vaccinated before influenza spreads,” he said.

“Tiredness and fatigue compromise people’s ability to fight infection, making getting a flu vaccine even more important,” Dr Pink said.

Up until the end of May this year, more than 163,000 influenza vaccines had been distributed in Canterbury.

As well as getting the vaccine, eating well and getting plenty of rest and exercise are also key to staying well overwinter.

Influenza vaccinations are

free for people aged 65 or over, pregnant or have long-term health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease (including asthma), kidney disease and most cancers, until the end of this month. Flu jabs are also available at a small cost from GPs or pharmacies.

Deaths highly unusual – expert A poisons expert says people are frequently exposed to carbon monoxide but the public can be assured the George family tragedy was a highly unusual accident.

Ashburton woman Cindy George died alongside her three children, 5-year-old Pio Scarlet Jetejura Raukete, 3-year-old Teuruaa Junior George, and 2-year-old Telyzshaun Gordon Ricardo Nelder Kruz George.

Their bodies were found on Thursday and a car was believed to have been left running in an internal garage.

National Poisons Centre Toxicologist Dr Leo Schep said carbon monoxide could be an “insidious” killer, leaving its victims little or no time to act.

Apart from symptoms of drowsiness or headaches, people may not know they were being poisoned.

When air was not rapidly replenished with enough oxygen, carbon monoxide could kill.

Dr Schep said any investigation into the Ashburton deaths would need to determine how long the car was left on for and how much fuel was in the car’s tank before more definitive statements could be made.

But he said it was immediately clear “an unusual situation” was behind the deaths.

Dr Schep said people frequently exposed themselves to carbon monoxide but in most cases the environment only had low doses of the gas.

“When we’re walking down the street we’re exposed to it.

When you smoke cigarettes you’re exposed to carbon monoxide and your levels will be higher.”

Building code failures dropping

Ashburton tradies have been given a pat on the back by the Ashburton District Council for their efforts in lifting the standard of their work.

Over the past year the number of building inspection failures has halved and that has everything to do with the willingness of builders and tradespeople to

understand what was needed in terms of building code compliance requirements.

During the year to June 30, the council carried out 5051 inspections. Just 8.8 per cent of those inspections resulted in a failure.

The previous year the failure rate was 16.4 per cent and the year before, 16.7 per cent.

Council building services manager Michael Wong said

the failure rate had improved because of a better relationship and better communication between council and tradespeople.

“We have a group of about 20 to 30 builders who come along to our bi-monthly meetings.

We’ve had good feedback from them and they appreciate our inspectors taking the time to talk to them.”

Failures were for minor issues

such as smoke alarms not being fitted or unfinished front doorsteps.

It was heartening to see a growing number of tradespeople wanting to improve their skills and services, and approaching council for the latest compliance requirements, Mr Wong said.

“We’re working well together.”

Ashburton’s experience is in sharp contrast to that of the Auckland City Council where inspectors are failing about a third of inspections because of shoddy work.

The high number of failures has been put down to builders with varying skills flooding the city’s market and to project managers that were trying to oversee multiple jobs at once.

In brief Ayla out of hospital Jerry Collins’ baby daughter is finally well enough to leave the hospital in France where she has been fighting for life since her parents were killed in a car crash last month. The former All Black and his partner Alana Madill died last month when their car was struck by a bus on a French motorway. Their only child Ayla, now three months’ old, suffered life threatening injuries and has undergone a number of emergency surgeries. Ms Madill’s sister Nora revealed that the baby was recovering well and would be taken to Canada, where her mother was from.

The Highlanders’ Super Rugby success will be celebrated with a street parade in Dunedin today.

The parade, organised by the Dunedin City Council, will start at midday. Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull urged the public to get behind this event. “This is a chance to be part of history and show the team how proud we are of them,” he said.

“This is the first time the Highlanders have won this competition and it means a huge amount to the team, the people of Otago and Southland and fans further afield.” After speeches, members of the public will have the opportunity to take photos with the players and the trophy.

Fans were at Dunedin International Airport when the team arrived home yesterday.

Patient not happy with complaint process

Six weeks ago, Ashburton woman Kathy Jack lodged a complaint with the Health and Disability Commissioner against an Ashburton medical practitioner; today she says she feels let down by the complaints process and believes concerns over her treatment have been dismissed as trivial.

Ms Jack visited a weekend doctor in mid-May and was appalled at the doctor’s manner.

She was made to feel she had

wasted the doctor’s time and was told she would be charged extra for the consultation because of this.

Her health issue, however, proved to be serious.

Ms Jack felt she had been so badly treated she complained to the Health and Disability Commissioner. The complaint was then referred back to the medical practice concerned and that is where the system failed, Ms Jack said.

She received a letter from the practice manager who offered

her an opportunity to discuss the concerns in person.

Yes, there was an apology in the letter but the writer went to considerable length to make it clear the doctor in question did not believe they had been rude.

It concluded by saying the doctor was well regarded by their patients and colleagues.

The explanations offered were simply excuses and the offer of a face-to-face meeting with the doctor in question would have put her in an untenable position, she said.

“I feel pretty let down, I’m pretty annoyed about this.

When I read the letter I thought it was a joke. They’re making excuses and it’s clear they don’t really care,” she said.

Since she went public with her complaint, Ms Jack said she had received strong community support for speaking out.

“They’ve (the medical practice) thrown the ball back to me, so I’ll now go back to the Health and Disability Commissioner and say I’m not happy with the outcome.”

A man has been charged with murder after a young woman was killed in Dunedin. Police said the 22-year-old man was also charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after the death of Vicki Lee Warrington in Waldronville on Friday evening.

When police arrived at a Brighton Road house, they found Ms Warrington dead and another man outside the address with injuries.

The 22 year-old was arrested shortly afterwards. He will appear in Dunedin District Court today.

Tough line on air pollution

Ashburton property owners have been put on notice - air pollution officers will be patrolling the town’s streets over the next two weeks, looking for smoky chimneys.

Better burning is the focus of Environment Canterbury’s clean air drive this winter and already the clean up has begun in Christchurch. Lower Cashmere and St Albans were hit earlier this week by inspectors and nine offence notices were issued. Both Ashburton and Timaru are on the visit list for the next two weeks.

ECan clean air spokesperson Nadeine Dommisse said the inspections would be undertaken at a range of days and times to ensure a good cross section of burning patterns was observed.

While ECan requires all logburners over 15 years of age to be replaced with new, low-emission models, it recognises that new burners can still emit smoke and is also working to improve burning

habits, Ms Dommisse said.

A chimney can have visible smoke for up to 15 minutes after it is first lit but then smoke should be invisible. Offenders are warned, given advice on clean burning and rechecked. If smoke is visible after a second warning, a $750 fine can be imposed.

Since the awareness campaign around smoking chimneys had begun, there appeared to be a greater awareness of the need to burn cleanly, Ms Dommisse said.

ECan’s website www.letscleartheair. co.nz had received thousands of hits this winter as had its smokefree burning video, she said.

“All of this shows we’re making progress slowly with households to improve air quality.”

Airsheds must have no more than three high pollution nights by 2016 and no more than one by 2020.

This winter Ashburton has logged just one night over the 50 microgram limit, the best record in Canterbury.

■ ROTARY CLUB OF ASHBURTON

Hard work rewarded Phil Godfrey has become the most recent recipient of one of Rotary’s most prestigious awards.

The Paul Harris Fellowship Sapphire Pin was awarded to the Ashburton Rotarian earlier this week.

The club rarely awards Sapphire Pins, other than this there are only two others in the 70-strong club who have them.

Club president John Leadley presented Mr Godfrey with the award last week, saying there were few Rotarians who had contributed more to the club and community than he had.

Mr Leadley introduced Mr Godfrey, stating he joined the Rotary Club of Ashburton in August 1982 and has been the director of every committee – some multiple times.

Mr Godfrey was club presi-

dent for a number of years and has taken on other roles including secretary, bulletin editor, programme director, sergeant and Bookarama convenor.

Outside of the club Mr Godfrey kept busy too. He was a surgeon at Ashburton Hospital for many years and also took up the role of medical director.

He, together with John MacDonald, came up with a plan for the future direction of the hospital which in turn helped to save the hospital, Mr Leadley said.

Mr Godfrey’s list of extracurricular achievements go on and on. He was the chair of Ashburton St John from 1984 to 2014 and in 2012 was made a commander of the Order of St John, and worked tirelessly as the president of Birthright Ashburton for 30 years.

Family need time to grieve in peace Michelle Nelson RURAL REPORTER

G

rief brings out the best and worst in people.

The outpouring of support for the family of Cindy George and her three young children bears testimony to the way the Mid Canterbury community can step up to the plate in the face of tragedy.

It also shows the strength of the Cook Islands community, who are quietly and graciously preparing to bury four of their own later in the week.

The Tinwald Scout Hall has become the hub for those gathering to mourn and mattresses line the walls, waiting for family members to arrive.

They will stick together over the next few days, supporting each other.

Others have not been so benevolent.

The gossip and innuendo which continues to swirl is destructive and salacious. It causes distress to the family and friends of the victims of this tragedy.

It’s high time to put a lid on the speculation and stick to the facts – this was a terrible accident, which cost four lives.

Ms George was well supported and well-loved in her family and her community.

She was a member of the Latter Day Saints church, and a valued performer of the Tiare Maori cultural group, which practised in the same hall her family are gathering in to mourn the untimely deaths.

Outside media has also played a part in making life difficult for the family. Few if any of us can understand the enormity of the loss this family is suffering, it is incomprehensible and devastating.

First they were blindsided by waves of inaccurate and sensationalised reporting, before the hounding for the inside story began.

Their requests for privacy should be respected and they should be left in peace to grieve.

ften in all the media focus about rising house prices in Auckland and the rebuild in Christchurch, it can seem that the rest of New Zealand is forgotten. However, that is not the case. This Government is well aware that for New Zealand to build a more productive and competitive economy we need all our regions to be achieving their potential.

That’s why we’re working across the country doing things like building the Roads of National Significance and accelerating regional roading projects, putting in ultra-fast and rural broadband, and encouraging irrigation projects. National cycle trails around the country are helping boost our tourism industry.

We’re also working alongside business to invest in primary growth partnership projects to get a better return from what we sell to the world.

This year’s Budget included a number of initiatives to support the regions.

We’re investing $25 million over three years for new Regional Research Institutes to support innovation in the regions. And there’s an $80m boost over four years for grants to support innovative Kiwi businesses around New Zealand carrying out research and development.

The Budget also allocated $97m for improvements to five regional highways in Northland, the East Coast, Taranaki, the West Coast, and Queenstown. This is part of a $212m package for 14 regionally important state highway projects.

seven new schools, expand four existing schools, and add another 241 classrooms across the country.

The new schools are in Whakatane, Gisborne, Hastings, Rolleston, and Hamilton, with significant school expansions in Papamoa and Queenstown.

Investment to boost worldclass internet connectivity includes $100m to bring fast, reliable broadband to more regions and a $50m fund to extend mobile coverage in black spot areas such as along main highways and in popular tourist destinations.

ACC is on track to provide further levy cuts of $500m, bringing total annual savings since 2012 for businesses, workers, vehicle owners, and families to $2 billion. The average ACC motor vehicle levy will fall from around $330 to $195 from next month with a further drop to $120 from 2016.

There is support for housing in the regions with Housing Accords with local councils in Tauranga, Western Bay of Plenty, Queenstown Lakes, Tasman, and Nelson.

And 90,000 people are set to benefit from the new KiwiSaver HomeStart scheme – the most

generous support package in a generation to help first-home buyers.

Budget 2015 continues our programme of helping families with a $790m package to support children living in some of New Zealand’s poorest families.

This includes children living in beneficiary and low-income households in the regions. And from July 1 all children under 13 will have access to free GP visits and free prescriptions.

These and other initiatives are a continuation of the Government’s strong programme to build a brighter future across regional New Zealand.

Mass execution in Syria The Islamic State group has released a video showing 25 Syrian government soldiers being executed by teenagers in the ancient amphitheatre in the city of Palmyra.

The video released yesterday documents an execution that reportedly happened shortly after the jihadist group captured the city on May 21.

It shows the soldiers in green and brown military uniforms being shot dead on the amphitheatre’s stage in front of an enormous version of the group’s black and white flag.

The executioners all appear to be children or teenagers and are wearing desert camouflage and brown bandanas.

The killings are carried out in front of a relatively sparse crowd of men and some children watching from the ancient theatre’s seats.

IS reportedly carried out more than 200 executions, including of civilians, in and around Palmyra in the period when it captured the city.

The executions in the Palmyra amphitheatre were first reported on May 27 by

the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, less than a week after IS captured the city.

At the time, Syria’s antiquities director Mamoun Abdelkarim said he feared the killings could signal the start of “the group’s barbarism and savagery against the ancient monuments of Palmyra”.

“Using the Roman theatre to execute people proves that these people are against humanity,” he said.

The Greco-Roman ruins at Palmyra are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city’s capture by IS prompted international concerns for the fate of its spectacular ancient treasures.

So far, IS is not reported to have damaged the actual ruins, although it has blown up and desecrated Muslim graves in the city and destroyed a statue outside the Palmyra Museum.

IS has regularly released videos of its mass executions, with slick production and gruesome violence that experts say is a key propaganda tool for the group.

Airstrikes hit IS targets in Syria US-led coalition forces say they have carried out a series of 16 airstrikes on the Islamic State group in the extremists’ Syrian stronghold of Raqqa.

“This was one of the largest deliberate engagements we have conducted to date in Syria and it will have debilitating effects on Daesh’s (IS) ability to move from Raqqa,” spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Gilleran said.

“The significant airstrikes tonight were executed to deny Daesh the ability to move military capabilities throughout Syria and into Iraq.”

Coalition forces “successfully engaged multiple targets” throughout Raqqa - the extremists’ de facto capital - the statement said, destroying IS structures and transit routes.

State of Panicked Greeks stock up on food emergency in Tunisia Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi has declared a state of emergency following last week’s beach massacre claimed by jihadists that he says leaves Tunisia facing a “special type of war”.

In another firm response to the June 26 attack claimed by the Islamic State group that killed 38 foreign tourists, several officials have been sacked including the governor of the Sousse region where it took place. The North African state, which has seen an exodus of tourists, has admitted its security services were unprepared for the seaside attack in Port El Kantaoui and that police were too slow to respond.

In a televised address at the weekend, Essebsi said the state of emergency, effective from Saturday for a 30-day period, was decided on after consultations with the parliament speaker and prime minister.

The measure was adopted because of “the exceptional situation which the country is going through after the latest terrorist attack and the persistent threats which place the country in a special type of war”, he said.

A state of emergency grants special powers to the police and army and allows the authorities to carry out raids on homes at any time of the day.

Greeks are hoarding cash and food amid mounting fears the economy could collapse, cracking open their wallets only to stock up on essentials and stripping supermarket shelves in the process.

Mothers, elderly men and university students were spotted at the weekend pushing heavily overloaded trolleys or coming out of shops weighed down by bags of food, with essentials such as sugar, flour and pasta top of the list.

In the well-off area of Glyfada in Athens residents appeared to have panicked, thrusting everything from vast rolls of toilet paper to multiple packs of lentils into their carts.

“Most people are buying food now because they fear the worst,” said Andreas Koutras, a 51-year old who works in finance, referring to a referendum on Greece’s bailout which could seal its financial fate.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has urged people to vote ‘No’, insisting that rejecting a bailout deal offered by the austerity-hit country’s international creditors will put it in a stronger negotiating position.

His right-hand man, Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, has promised banks will re-open after the vote - but with so much uncertainty surrounding Greece’s future, many doubt him.

Teens marry fighters Two of three teenage girls who travelled from Britain to Syria sparking criticism of the police response have married Islamic State (IS) group fighters, the lawyer for their families says.

Kadiza Sultana, 16, and 15-yearolds Shamima Begum and Amira Abase left their homes in February and flew to Istanbul before crossing into Syria. Two of the trio have been in touch with their families to say they have married men in ceremonies approved by IS and are living in and around the Syrian city of Raqqa, the group’s stronghold, the Guardian has reported. The paper reported that the two teenagers were given a “catalogue” of men to choose from and that their husbands were in their 20s.

Several female suicide bombers have blown themselves up amid panicked villagers fleeing a Boko Haram attack in a northeast Nigerian village, killing scores, the army and witnesses say. The latest carnage in a series of attacks that have claimed more than 200 lives in just three days happened on Friday night in Zabarmari village, 10km from the city of Maiduguri, the birthplace of the jihadist group.

Local resident Haladu Musa said “large numbers” of fighters poured into the village, overpowering government forces deployed to prevent the insurgents reaching Maiduguri. Then, as people began to flee, female suicide bombers started blowing themselves up, killing large numbers of people, he said.

A yummy winter dish.

Serves 4

500g yams 2 Tbsp vegetable oil 2 Tbsp runny honey 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar Preheat oven to 180°C. Slice yams in half if necessary.

Toss all ingredients together in a baking dish until yams are well coated.

Bake in preheated oven for 3035 minutes, or until tender.

Place in serving dish and serve hot.

Alternatively, allow to cool, then toss through leafy greens to make a salad.

Variations: Use swedes, parsnips or turnips.

Add a little crushed pineapple to the finished dish.

Kamchatka: A world of volcanoes T

hose wanting the niceties of civilisation are best warned to keep their distance from the Tolbachik volcanic complex, a landmark on the Kamchatka Peninsula in east Russia.

With an eruptive history dating back thousands of years, the complex’s most recent eruption started in 2012 and is still continuing.

Yet, though the roads into the Kluchevskoy Nature Park leading to this unique volcanic landscape are arduous, the journey to view Tolbachik and its countless mini volcanoes is well worth the trouble.

Arriving at a high plateau requires at the minimum cutting across country in an off-road vehicle, and traversing dried river beds, flowing streams and muddy forest trails. The scene upon arrival is like something from a lunar landscape where

“A lot of people come here in a helicopter for a very quick tour,” says tour guide Valeri, who takes his groups on a three-day camping trip through the park.

It is almost impossible to avoid the Kamchatka bear on any trip to the region, as the peninsula is home to Russia’s bear population.

There are camping areas throughout the park although it advisable to pack warm clothing as the nights are cold, even in summer.

Some of the villages in the peninsula’s lowland area offer very rudimentary accommoda-

tion as well as the chance to experience a banja - a Russian steam bath.

There is very little life to be seen in the volcano park itself as all plant life in a radius of 400 square kilometres was wiped out following a massive eruption in 1975.

Situated on Russia’s Pacific coast, the Kamchatka Peninsula was a virtual no-go zone for strangers during the Soviet era, with access permitted only by special permission of the KGB. However, the area has become a popular tourist destination since the collapse of communism, especially for Japanese visitors.

larger volcanoes are active, a unique concentration, not surprisingly making the peninsula with its rich plant and animal life a UNESCO heritage site.

The rivers of Kamchatka boast 11 different species of salmon, more than anywhere else on the planet, and the locally sourced red caviar is a much sought after delicacy across the whole of Russia.

The unpredictable and untamed Kamchatka wilderness brings with it many dangers.

Every year, numerous Russians pay for underestimating its risks with their lives. Any form of help is often far away and since mobile phone signals are extremely unreliable in the

wilderness, tour guides generally carry satellite phones.

Even a picnic carries dangers as the smell of food can attract hungry brown bears, found throughout the peninsula. They normally live on a diet of fish, mushrooms and berries.

Kamchatka’s tourism infrastructure has developed only over the past two decades and flight prices are still high, but visitors accept this to enjoy the region’s thermal baths.

Flight prices are much lower in winter when tour operators offer ski and sled tours.

The route back to civilisation involves travelling through the Taiga before finally taking a ferry across the Kamchatka, the peninsula’s largest river.

Standing on the river’s sandy bank it is possible to cast one last glance at the snow-covered volcanic peaks in the Kluchevskoy Nature Park.

Comeback complete

By Kris shannon In an alternate rugby world, maybe one in which the Hurricanes weren’t the only Kiwi team without a Super Rugby title, Jamie Joseph would have been out of a job.

He would have received his marching orders shortly after piloting the Highlanders to 14th place in the 2013 season, having won only three of 16.

The southern side would have been forced to start over, to recruit a new coach with a new plan and head down a new path that never would have culminated in Saturday’s stunning win over the Hurricanes in the Super Rugby final.

Instead, though, Joseph was retained, and the two years later the Highlanders reaped the rewards.

Climbing so quickly from second-bottom to the top of the pile is an impressive feat on pa-

per. It would seem to speak of a rag-tag bunch rallying around their under-fire coach and somehow rousing themselves into championship form.

But Joseph insisted that 2013 team had very little relation to what went on at the Cake Tin on Saturday night.

In fact, only Ben Smith and Aaron Smith started both the Highlanders’ last game of the 2013 season and the 2015 final.

“There’s been a lot of things, really, but in short it’s a different team,” Joseph said of the catalyst for the turnaround.

“In hindsight, I made some calls [in 2013] that I thought were going to be better for the Highlanders and clearly they weren’t. But we managed to turn it around.”

The other thing about that 2013 season was its peculiarity.

After all, the groundwork for this year’s side was laid with Joseph’s appointment in 2011,

with the former All Black rapidly improving a side without a playoff appearance in a decade.

And, even before Joseph arrived, the franchise had already been overhauled, with the financial situation improved and recruitment enhanced.

In turn, slow but steady progress towards relevance continued in Joseph’s first couple of campaigns. The annus horribilis of two years ago appears, in hindsight, nothing more than an aberration.

The Highlanders already possessed players like Lima Sopoaga, Elliot Dixon and Joe Wheeler - it was just a matter of introducing the young talent into the side and surrounding them with a quality coaching staff led by Joseph and Tony Brown.

Brown, of course, was part of the Highlanders side who had their party pooped in 1999, a team that reached the semi-

finals four times in five seasons without breaking the duck.

And now, in the 20th year of Super Rugby, Joseph knew how the drought-snapping win would be received.

“It’s been a long time since there’s been some real success in the deep south,” he said.

“I think it’ll mean a hell of a lot to the region.”

One man well aware of the significance was Ben Smith, who was born in Dunedin and watched on as a teenager as the Highlanders continually fell near the final hurdle.

And having cleared it at last, after suffering defeat after defeat two seasons ago, Smith struggled to express the emotions of being part of such an historic side.

“I don’t know how to describe it, really,” he said.

“We created something special this year and I just really enjoyed being a part of it.”

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd believes the television match official made the wrong call when he awarded Highlanders forward Elliot Dixon a try during the Super Rugby final. Dixon produced a moment of magic, powering through four defenders to put his side 13-5 up.

Referee Jaco Peyper referred the grounding to TMO Ben Skeen. The player himself looked far from convinced, while Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd, unsurprisingly, believed an error was made. “I actually thought he lost the ball,” Boyd said.

“But we tend to look at those things out of our own eyes. The TMO and the referees were confident that he’d scored so it’s in the book, isn’t it?” However, Boyd made it clear he didn’t think Dixon’s try was the difference - instead pointing to his own team’s costly errors.

Fans out in force More than 2000 fans descended on Dunedin Airport yesterday to welcome home their heroes. Those heroes, of course, were the Highlanders, returning from Wellington with the Super Rugby trophy in tow after the side’s 21-14 win over the Hurricanes. The team gathered on the tarmac before entering the terminal to a tremendous welcome from a crowd that covered much of the ground floor and snaked its way up the stairs to the first floor.

Midfielder Richard Buckman said the team’s achievement still hadn’t sunk in. “The Dunedin public’s got in behind the team all season so it’s pretty awesome to bring the trophy back for them.”

But his side went down 21-14 in the capital and Smith, 33, will leave for France with something missing on his impressive rugby resume. Rakaia, Methven eye Cup final

Methven and Rakaia both delivered strong second half performances to collect bonus point wins in round three of Mid Canterbury rugby’s Watters Cup on Saturday.

Methven had to come from behind to beat Hampstead 24-13 while Rakaia converted a 14-0 halftime lead into a 36-21 win over Southern.

Rakaia banked another five points to be one win away from a third straight final after the defending champions fronted up from the get go to dominate the first half.

“We muscled up a bit which was pleasing as it was a bit of a plan to really front up,” Rakaia coach Wayne Foxcroft said.

They certainly did that, pushing Southern off the ball, winning the breakdown battle or forcing the mistake more often than not, and then converted their opportunities into points.

In the second half Rakaia’s big ‘x-factor’ Seta Koroitamana delivered another immense performance at number eight, including a stunning solo try to seal the win.

Andrew Letham kicked an early penalty goal before a deflected chip kick fell straight into the path of wing Richard Burns for a simple try and an 8-0 lead.

Southern’s James Miller missed an early penalty - which appeared to knock his confidence - while up the other end Letham showed how it was done with his second successful penalty goal.

Rakaia’s ill-discipline gifted both Miller and fullback Ewan Scott chances to put Southern on the board but both failed, while Letham landed his third penalty goal of the half for a 14-0 lead.

then went close to scoring a try prior to halftime, but his closedfisted fend instead allowed Rakaia to escape unscathed.

After a sloppy first half, the visitors finally got something going that they were able to finish off as a quick tap had Scott Vessey barge over and Miller converted.

Rakaia hit straight back.

Koroitamana burst through down the blind for the first of his two tries and Letham’s conversion re-instated a 14-point margin.

A well worked backline move and a strong angled run from Scott looked to have Southern’s second try in the offing until Rakaia’s Leps Seitava nearly took off Scott’s head.

For the high shot Seitava had a sit down for 10 minutes and referee Kevin Opele awarded the penalty try, and Miller ‘s conversion made it 14-28.

Letham landed another penalty as Southern watched flanker Eric Duff and Scott both come off injured.

However, Southern rallied again as Miller grubbed ahead

close to the line and flanker Will Veint won the race to the ball for the visitor’s third try, and Miller’s conversion closed the gap to 10.

Southern then made the mistake of kicking to Koroitamana and the Fijian proved unstoppable, running 60 metres through and around the Southern defence for his second try to put the game beyond doubt.

Southern went chasing a crucial bonus point from a fourth try.

From the lineout - where Southern would typically go for the rolling maul - they went wide and with the try line begging Josh McAtamney dropped

the ball, and with the knock on the bonus point slipped from Southern’s grasp.

“We got bullied in the first half,” Southern coach Jason Rickard said. “We were running sideways too often and not supporting each other and Rakaia just took it to us.

“Too often we were panicked and flustered, and then made some bad decisions that proved costly. That could be our season over.”

Southern have the week off on the bye hoping results can go their way to leave the door ajar for a shot at the final while Rakaia rolls on – with the Max Gilbert in tow - to face Methven.

In brief Southern back on top Southern has regained top billing in Mid Canterbury senior B rugby.

In round seven of the Centennial Mug, Southern’s bonus point 56-10 away win over Rakaia put them back on top spot as the only unbeaten team in round two after Celtic crashed at home to Tinwald.

Tinwald’s 15-12 win has them move into second equal with Celtic with two rounds top play before the semi-finals, but Tinwald have the bye this weekend. Hampstead held onto fourth spot with a bonus point 32-28 win over Methven, but a consolation point keeps fifth placed Methven in the hunt, as Hampstead are away to Celtic in round eight.

Collegiate recorded just their second win of the round with a 29-17 win at home over Mt Somers.

Allenton had the bye.

Big finish gets Methven home

The combined champions Methven overcame a slow start to score three unanswered tries in the second half for a bonus point win over Hampstead on Saturday.

“We didn’t quite string things together like we should have but we got there,” Methven coach Dale Palmer said.

“We couldn’t put anything together, looked tired and couldn’t keep hold of the ball in the first half.

“In the second half we were a bit better and managed to score some good tries to get the bonus point, but Hampstead kept coming at us until the end.”

Methven made a strong start

but missed an early penalty shot, while Hampstead’s Toafa Touli didn’t miss his opportunity for a 3-0 lead.

Hampstead then harassed the host for half an hour with neither side able to add to the scoreboard.

Two minutes from halftime Methven finally put something together to crack Hampstead’s defence through second five Andy Hamilton.

However, from the kick-off Hampstead hit straight back with Sia Fifita - in his 149th game for the club - going over for the try out wide and Touli slotted the conversion to take a 10-5 lead into halftime.

Hampstead then scored first after the break as Touli kicked

a second penalty, but then Methven regained the momentum.

“Methven just ran us off the park,” Hampstead’s Regan Broker said.

“Sweeping the same way, putting pressure around the rucks and when we tightened up they went wide.

“Just very smart rugby.”

Methven halfback Chris Lock scored the first of his sides three quick tries which fullback Nick Wackwitz converted to close the gap back to one.

Methven centre Fa’aitu Tuamoheloa marked his return to action since the combined final with a try that put the host back in front.

After some sustained pres-

sure lock Sam Grant went over for the all-important bonus point try, which was converted

by Dan Maw to open up an 11-point lead.

Hampstead continued to pester the hosts up until the last minute but again they came away second, their 15th straight loss to Methven.

Although still an outside chance at scraping into the final, Broker’s main goal is to end their winless run in the Watters Cup round robin that stretches back to 2009.

However, Broker has eight starters away and several injury concerns from the loss to Methven, meaning he may only have a bare 15 for the clash with Celtic.

How Andy Ellis has held it all together these past four years is a miracle. His career hasn’t gone the way he wanted since he booted the ball into the crowd to close the 2011 World Cup final. That moment appeared to have triggered something within Ellis because, when he returned to action with the Crusaders, he was a different player. All the component parts of his game came together and he played better than ever. But when the shakedown came and there was room for only two halfbacks, Weepu and Smith were named. However his perseverance will finally be rewarded this week.

His story will finally have a new chapter - one which proves the door is never closed. Ellis is almost certain to start against Samoa on Wednesday.

A-League clubs have savaged player representatives for their conduct during pay negotiations and pledged to implement their offer anyway. Professional Footballers Australia rejected the final pay deal put by A-League clubs and FFA last week, leading to the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement on June 30. Tutaia still the go-to girl for the Silver Ferns

By Michael Burgess Whatever happens to the Silver Ferns at the World Cup, one irrefutable truth remains - the performance of Maria Tutaia is still the critical success factor.

She’s the go-to girl, as she has been for much of the past five years, and especially since the retirement of Irene van Dyk. That feeling has been amplified since last week’s selection of the World Cup squad.

The inexperience of shooters Bailey Mes and Malia Paseka, added to the fact Jodi Brown is more a provider than a plunderer, means Tutaia becomes the key attacking weapon.

When on song, she’s almost undefendable.

Across her 11-year Silver Ferns career, she has maintained a shooting percentage close to 80 per cent, despite taking more chances than most.

“I would argue Maria is the

only true long-range shooter in the game,” says Ferns assistant coach Vicki Wilson.

“The next closest might be Erin Bell [Thunderbirds] but they would be the only two who actually have a crack at it.

“You see defenders rolling their eyes. When Maria is on song, she is very difficult to contain because of her height and mobility.”

Brown also recognises that.

“She is super important,” she says.

“On court, she is almost emotionless, very steady, very calm.

The way she conducts herself - it gives you confidence to give her the ball. She is a big-time player and has been the difference in the past.”

It’s easy to recall the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, when after two extra-time periods against Australia, Tutaia slotted the winning shot from distance to seal a precious gold medal.

That was possibly her finest performance in the black dress, with 41 goals from 50 attempts across 80 minutes of excruciating pressure.

There was almost a repeat at the 2011 world championships in Singapore, but a late attempt from Tutaia lipped out before Caitlin Bassett sealed the match for the Diamonds, after Australia had trailed by six goals.

“Singapore was gutting,” said Tutaia.

“But it shows what netball is like. You can be up by five or six goals and it can turn in the last quarter.

“In tournaments, it is the team who turns up on the day and that is the key focus for us. If you turn up on the day with any doubt in your mind ... you can’t afford that.”

Tutaia is a much more rounded player than she was at the last world tournament.

The 28-year-old has added a

considerable defensive workrate and remains an under-rated feeder.

But it is her shooting ability that will be under the spotlight in Sydney.

For all of their struggles over the past two years against the Diamonds, the Ferns have often competed well at the defensive

end of the court, especially when Casey Kopua is in the game.

Bassett is an intimidating presence, but she can be contained. Unfortunately, the Ferns have not always capitalised on turnovers and possession at the other end of the court.

Tutaia often finds her best form for the national team.

“My season was a bit up and down,” she said. “I was consistent during pool play but I let myself down come finals time [and] had a few niggles here and there.

“But I’m a very confident person and back myself 100 per cent. Everybody knows I will just turn and shoot when I am on.

“There have been times when I haven’t been the match winner but, as a shooter, you need to take that responsibility.

“It’s true that as a shooter if you are hot, the Silver Ferns will be hot.”

In brief Aussie quick retires Fast bowler Ryan Harris has retired due to his chronic knee injury, ending the career of one of Australia’s most-resilient cricketers.

Harris suffered a setback after bowling 30 overs against Kent last week and decided his body could offer no more to the national side.

The 35-year-old was Australia’s leading wicket-taker in the 2013 Ashes. The news comes as a major blow to their hopes of retaining the urn. Pat Cummins, who hasn’t played first-class cricket in almost two years, will join the squad in Cardiff before the first Test starts on Wednesday.

Wakanui Blue broke out of their funk with a 4-1 win over Mid-South Canterbury men’s hockey competition leaders Tainui in Oamaru on Saturday.

Tainui took the lead early on and a third straight loss began to loom over Blue heads as they went to half-time down 1-0.

Instead they found some form in the second spell to come storming back for a big win.

Thomas White got things going before Scott Marshall scored a hat-trick to return home with a bonus point win.

The news wasn’t so good for three-time defending champions Wakanui Black, as they were comprehensively thrashed 7-2

by a resurgent Northern Hearts.

In what was only Hearts’ third win of the season they handed Black a second successive loss to sit with a five-win five-loss record on third - one point behind Blue, with Tainui a further four points ahead.

The tide may have turned in Blue’s favour when the two sides meet for the second time

this season this Saturday - after Blue won their last meeting.

In the women’s competition Hampstead held on for a hardfought 1-0 win over Geraldine in Timaru and Hampstead-Collegians were held to a 2-2 draw with Craighead.

The Hampstead sides go head-to-head for a third time this Saturday.

Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray remain on course for the Wimbledon semi-finals. Six of the top 10 seeds are safely through to the business end after a first week that included defeats for seventh seed Milos Raonic and 10th-seeded Rafael Nadal. Fifth seed Kei Nishikori withdrew with a calf injury, while eighth-seeded David Ferrer pulled out before the first round. Dennis takes first stage Australian Rohan Dennis has set a new record for the highest average speed in a Tour de France time trial as he won the opening stage of the 2015 edition. In heatwave conditions, the 25-year-old scorched around the 13.8km course in just 14min 56sec. “I’ve broken a dry spell of wins and what a way to do it,” said Dennis. He was the only rider to break the 15min mark and set a new Tour record of 55.446kph on average for a time trial, beating the 21-yearold mark set by Chris Boardman over a course that was just over half the length. Dennis had said before the Tour began that his whole season had been built around training for this time trial and that should he win, it would be “the happiest day” of his “life as a cyclist”.

Rio berth proving elusive for Black Sticks The Black Sticks Women have finished fourth after being defeated 4-2 by Australia in the bronze medal match at the FIH World League Semi-Final in Antwerp yesterday.

The result sees the Kiwis miss out on a top three placing and automatic qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics, with the Hockeyroos having now booked their tickets to Brazil.

New Zealand’s next shot at Olympic qualification is at October’s Oceania Cup in Stratford, where they can claim a spot by winning the Oceania title.

The top four finish has however earned them the right to compete at the FIH World

League Final in Rosario, Argentina from 5-13 December.

At the conclusion of the tournament the New Zealanders come away with a record of five wins and two losses, along with 29 goals scored for and six against.

Captain Anita Punt said it was disappointing to allow Australia to take hold of the game in the first quarter and a gutting result.

“It was a really disappointing performance from us today. We didn’t start the way we wanted to and that had us on the back foot,” she said.

“We will go home, regroup and come back fighting harder.”

Sticks rattled early thanks to two goals in the first five minutes, with Emily Smith and Jane Claxton both capitalising on loose balls in the circle and beating goalkeeper Sally Rutherford.

Mariah Williams added to the tally late in the period to give Australia a daunting 3-0 advantage after the opening quarter.

It was a much more balanced second quarter with the best chance coming just out from halftime when Gemma Flynn dove onto a hard cross from Punt but her deflection went just wide.

Stacey Michelsen sparked some magic in the 34th minute

with a brilliant solo run, dribbling side to side and beating six defenders before slipping the ball past the keeper.

But the Hockeyroos kept the pressure on and delivered a fourth goal just seconds out from three quarter time through a strong shot at the top of the circle from Georgia Nanscawen.

Punt pulled another goal back for the Black Sticks early in the fourth quarter when she rocketed a penalty corner drag flick into the top of the net.

New Zealand fought desperately in the dying minutes but couldn’t find the two goals they needed to force a shoot-out.

Aussie raider set to hit and run Former Gr. 1 Queensland Derby winner Sonntag is gearing up for a tilt at the signature event during New Zealand Cup Week in Christchurch this November.

The Henry Dwyer-trained stayer has returned to work following a four week break and will be prepared for an attempt at the Gr. 3 Christchurch Casino 152nd New Zealand Cup run at Riccarton on November 14.

The rising five-year-old son of Teofilo has won five races from a 17 start career to date and numbers the Listed Sale Cup (1600m) along with the Queensland Derby amongst his major triumphs.

Described by his trainer as a ‘deadset stayer’ Sonntag has shown the 3200 metre distance of the New Zealand Cup should be right to his liking.

“He is probably not quite at the top level amongst the staying ranks in Australia but he is pretty capable on his day,” noted Dwyer.

“He won a reasonably weak Queensland Derby but showed staying is his game with a win over 2800 metres at Flemington two starts ago before finishing a nice second in the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes over two miles after that.

“He went out for a break after that run and in the meantime we have been looking at the options for him during the spring. The New Zealand Cup fits the bill so we’ve decided to have a shot at it provided we can get all of the logistics worked out.”

Sonntag may be making an appearance at the New Zealand Cup this year.

Dwyer has been in contact with the Canterbury Jockey Club regarding the race and is currently assessing the options around getting the horse to Christchurch.

“Unfortunately there is no direct flight from Melbourne to Christchurch so we are looking at what is available,” he said.

“There is a flight from Sydney to Christchurch so we are exploring that and what opportunities there are for him in Sydney before he would come across to New Zealand.

“There aren’t any suitable races for him in New Zealand before the Cup so it is most likely going to be a one race campaign there.

“I had thought he might strike a wet track which would suit him well but I’ve been told it’s more likely to be a firm surface. That won’t matter to him as he’s pretty versatile and goes on all tracks.”

Dwyer is also hopeful to have former New Zealand apprentice Michael Dee confirmed to ride the horse if he does make the trip.

Dagg determined to take his chances

BY GREGOR PAUL Israel Dagg has been around for long enough to know that fortune can change in a jiffy when it comes to the All Blacks and that he’s got ample time to stake his claim for a World Cup berth.

The 27-year-old only managed five games for the Crusaders before a calf strain flared not once, but twice, to leave him desperately short of the game time required to prove his form.

While he has spent the last 10 weeks trying to rehabilitate, he’s seen Waisake Naholo, Nehe Mil-

ner-Skudder, Ben Smith and Julian Savea put down significant markers about their respective form and abilities.

It’s been frustrating for Dagg - a player who has shown since 2010 that he’s got the temperament and skills to shine in test football, but who also has a pressing need to reiterate that point having not quite been at this sharpest throughout 2014.

Dagg to deliver a convincing performance in Apia.

“I try not to think about it too much because I think when you do, that’s when it all goes pearshaped,” he says.

“I’ll just back myself and be confident - confident that I am good enough to be here.

“For me I can’t control any of that [form of the other selected back three players].

“They are playing great rugby and that’s awesome that they are playing outstanding. They deserve all the opportunities they get but I can’t control that.

“I was pretty disappointed that I got injured, but it happened and now I have an opportunity to be part of this campaign.”

Dagg, of course, knows from first-hand experience that the situation in July can look a lot different by August.

He suffered a remarkably similar fate in 2011 when he ripped his groin playing for the Crusaders and only managed a game and a half before the World Cup squad was named.

A virtuoso performance in Port Elizabeth won him his place and his form kicked on so

well from there that he kept Mils Muliaina out of the starting XV. He’s been the beneficiary of the volatile nature of test football once before, which is why he’s focusing no further ahead than Apia and nailing his core roles once he gets there.

“You never have a foot in the door with this team,” he says.

“You can be in the starting team one week and then boom, straight out of it. You don’t want to be comfortable. You want to be vying for the jersey. I have come back in with a lot of energy and - NZME willing to learn.”
