Farm crash kills one By Susan Sandys

One person has died following a freak car accident on an Ealing Road, Coldstream, dairy farm on Saturday. Emergency services were called to the scene about 1.10pm. Police confirmed yesterday there were two people in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and the driver was killed.
The Serious Crash Unit and WorkSafe were advised. The Guardian understands the two occupants were farm workers who were heading up the farm’s laneway to the cow shed when the accident occurred. St John said two ambulances and a helicopter responded, and one person was transported by road in a moderate condition to Ashburton Hospital.
Hinds Volunteer Rural Fire Force chief Dave Kingsbury said a car had rolled in what he described as a freak accident. The fire force were first responders on the scene, attending in a medical-assist capacity prior to the arrival of St John. Kingsbury said it was only a matter of minutes before the first of two St John ambulances arrived following the Hinds brigade.
“We do what we can to sustain life or minimise more damage, until more experienced help gets on the scene,” Kingsbury said. Kingsbury said he felt not only for the deceased victim’s family in the wake of the accident, but also the person’s colleagues on the farm. “It’s just one of those tragic things we have to deal with,” he said.
