Ashburton could be in for its biggest January on record when it comes to building consents for new homes issued by the Ashburton District Council.

On his first day back at work for the new year, building services manager Michael Wong was looking at an in-box that already held consent applications for 31 new house builds with more to come.

And if most of those were cleared inside the statutory 20 working days, 2016 would be off to a flying start, he said.

Total values for January are also likely to be a record breaker with consents valued at just under $3 million each for

the Allens Road medical centre and for living apartments in Lochlea, likely to be issued during the month.

“It’s looking huge at this stage and we also have a few classrooms in there,” Mr Wong said.

The school building consents include Borough School, $1 million, Dorie, $750,000 and Methven Primary, $60,000.

Last year was the busiest January on record for new dwelling consents with 25 issued. In January 2014 there were 20, 2013, 21; 2012, 13 and 2011 just eight.

During 2015, 213 consents for new homes were issued by the council, down from 233 in 2014, 234, 2013; 208, 2012 and 144, 2011.

While the number of new dwelling consents dropped 8 per cent, the value of those consents rose by $2.4 million to $78.671 million.

Across all categories, consent numbers declined 11 per cent and values by 10 per cent. The 1091 consents issued during 2015 had a total value of $137.238 million.

These were issued 98.1 per cent within the statutory time frame of 20 working days with codes of compliance issued 99.5 per cent on time.

The girl behind a vegan pie that has been flying off the shelves at petrol stations across the country says she’s been unable to get her hands on one herself. Auckland teen Gemma McLeod is “pretty stoked” by the response to her Mexican vegan creation, thousands of which have been sold in just a few days from Z pie warmers up and down the country. Some stations have even sold out since they hit the shelves on December 28, forcing the pie bakers to get a second batch in the ovens. Gemma said it was “great” to see how popular her healthy take on the humble Kiwi pie had been. And while her mum has missed the phenomenon by being on holiday over Christmas, her dad has been popping down to his local Z to buy them, Gemma said.

“He’s been really loving it, but apparently he’s had a few vegans fight him for the last one,” she laughed.

Motorhead could hit the top of the UK singles chart following the shock death of frontman Lemmy. The band’s song Ace Of Spades has moved up 94 places into ninth spot just midway through the week, according to the Official Charts Company.

Lemmy, real name Ian Kilmister, died just two days after being diagnosed with an “extremely aggressive cancer”. He had received the diagnosis on Boxing Day, just days after he had celebrated his 70th birthday. The track was first released in 1980, and hit No. 15 on the charts on its release. It was last in the top 40 charts 22 years ago.

Smell like a Russian president If your man smells of blackcurrant and fir cones, it is possible he could be wearing a new scent dedicated to Russian president Vladimir Putin. Leaders Number One, a perfume inspired by Putin, went on sale in Moscow just in time for Russians to pick them up as presents ahead of New Year’s Eve, the major festive occasion there. The perfume costs around 6000 roubles ($NZ122) for a 100ml bottle. It comes in a sleek black bottle featuring a profile of the Russian president’s head and the words “Inspired by Vladimir Putin” in English. “It’s a warm scent, a textured scent. It’s soft but at the same time it’s very firm,” said Vladislav Rekunov, the Belarus-born perfumer who came up with the scent. A British employee of Kyrgyzstan’s biggest gold mine, detained by police after comparing a national dish to a horse penis, was told to leave the country within 24 hours for working without an official permit.

Michael Mcfeat posted a comment on Facebook saying that his Kyrgyz colleagues were queuing for their “special delicacy, the horse’s penis” at New Year celebrations, sparking a brief strike at the Kumtor mine as well as calls for criminal prosecution.

The dish in question, chuchuk, is a sausage made from horse meat and intestines.

Police detained Mcfeat for questioning but the state security service only gave him a warning despite workers insisting that his actions constituted inciting hatred, a crime punishable by three to five years in prison.

A local court found that Mcfeat, who worked as a welder for a contractor at Kumtor, had no work permit and ruled that he must be deported within 24 hours.

Summer School opens for classes at Methven

All the makeup in the world can’t compete with the glow of confidence.

So says professional makeup artist Briar Howard, whose CV boasts such highs as Dancing with the Stars and World of Wearable Arts.

This week she is in Methven, one of many tutors leading about 25 courses at the weeklong Methven Summer School.

Miss Howard is currently teaching six students in her Makeup For All Occasions for Young Women, a new addition to the summer school programme.

She will later this week teach a similar course for mature women, which has attracted about 15 pupils.

She said she had been surprised by the high enrolments for the older group, and had expected more for the younger one.

“I thought it would be the other way around, maybe they have been stuck in routine for a long time and they are looking for a new approach,” Miss Howard said.

“Makeup in the past five years has literally transformed,” Miss Howard said. There were new technologies and many new products. She is teaching tips and tricks for a day look and glamorous night look, and she said generally at least seven products including a couple of eye shadows would be employed

Nine still in hospital Nine people are still in hospital, one in a serious condition, five days after a bus collided with a van and rolled near the bottom of the Otira Gorge, near Arthurs Pass.

St John territory manager and incident commander Kerry Mitchell said the injuries included “broken bones, soft tissue injuries, crush injuries, partial traumatic amputations and head injuries”.

All other passengers were treated at the scene, then taken by bus to the Holy Trinity Church in Greymouth, while the tour company arranged overnight accommodation.

Five patients admitted to Grey Base Hospital have now been discharged. Of the nine still in Christchurch Hospital, one is in a serious condition, and the others are stable.

“You just need to apply it properly,” she said.

And there was little difference between the makeup routine for older and younger women, only in the style, such as younger women may prefer darker makeup around the eyes.

“I always say to the girls to not compare themselves to social media because it’s edited, confidence is better,” Miss Howard

said. “As long as they are confident in themselves they are beautiful, you don’t have to put on piles of makeup to do that.”

About 300 students, mainly from throughout the South Island, are attending the summer school this week, a slight increase in enrolments compared to last year.

“It’s been pretty consistent from 2012 and if those numbers were dropping, then I’d be worried,” he said.

In October 2013, values were boosted by the EA Networks Centre consent, $32 million and in October 2014 by $8.7 million for the Ashburton Hospital build.

Looking ahead, Mr Wong said there were strong indications that consent values would be high for 2016 with the new Countdown supermarket, Eastfields, a proposed goat milk processing facility and possibly the Ashburton Arcade rebuild all likely to come on stream.

Somerset Grocer tops the polls

When it comes to cafes, size doesn’t matter; it’s all about what you do and how you do it says Nicky Milmine.

Her café, Somerset Grocer has just been awarded the Taste Most top café award for 2015, beating off competitors from around New Zealand.

The award involves a café’s sternest critics, its customers, and the Grocer’s patrons voted in sufficient numbers to see the café take out the South Island title in November. It then went up against three North Island winners in the chase for the top prize.

When the votes were counted, the Grocer topped the polls and yesterday Mrs Milmine couldn’t stop smiling.

“I don’t think they expected a little café in Ashburton to win. I guess this shows we’re giving people what they want from a café,” she said. The Grocer will celebrate its sixth birthday in March and over those years, Mrs Milmine said she’d watched people’s tastes in food change.

“We change our cabinet food

regularly as people’s tastes change and we’re selling more chai and decaf coffees now too. There’s also a big swing to organic juices away from things like coke,” she said.

The greatest change, however, had been in the deli area with demand now for a wider range of spices, herbs and gourmet type products, Mrs Milmine said.

“I’m always looking for new ideas and new trends and I try to go to trade shows.

“I hope to get to Melbourne this year because we have to keep up with what people are wanting, to keep it interesting for our customers,” she said.

The Taste and Most Organic Juice best café award was for the business as a whole.

Over the past six years, the business has grown phenomenally and now has four cooks, seven front-of-house staff and six parttime students on the pay roll.

What hasn’t changed over those years is the staff’s enthusiasm, she said. “I still love the business, still get a buzz out of it. Good staff make such a difference, this award is all down to them, they’re part of it too.”

Greenstreet rabbit’s fiery end a disappointment

In a relatively short time the blue rabbit of Greenstreet has become something of a legend.

It’s put a smile on thousands of faces and was snapped hundreds of times by travellers – but vandals have put paid to that, and left a handful of plastic baby rabbits delivered just before Christmas orphaned.

In the early hours of Monday morning the gigantic rabbit which has guarded Peter and Lois Etheridge’s mailbox on the Ashburton Staveley Road was torched.

It was there when the couple arrived home at about 11pm on

Sunday, but when Mr Etheridge took his grandson to collect the mail on Monday morning all that remained was a melted pool of plastic.

He doesn’t have words harsh enough to describe his feelings toward those responsible, but he knows what he would like to do if he was able to get his hands on them, and it’s not pleasant.

“The bloody idiots – what’s wrong with them?” he said.

“It’s just pathetic – it’s the same with all these burnt out cars. We were going to put a camera up but we hadn’t got around to it, now it’s too late.”

blue plastic barrels by Mr Etheridge’s hunting mate, Lowcliff farmer Kevin Jackson, who is also responsible for the buzzy bee and Snoopy aeroplanes which have been longtime favourites in the Ashburton Christmas parade.

For years the two men have shot rabbits together in the Mackenzie Basin and Mr Etheridge reckons they have probably bagged upward of 100,000.

He knew nothing of his mate’s latest project until the rabbit mysteriously appeared at his gate one morning a few months ago, munching on a road-cone carrot.

In recent weeks it has worn a Santa hat, and sported some tin-

sel in the spirit of Christmas.

Mr Jackson has offered to make a replacement but the jury is still out on that.

Mr Etheridge fears it may meet the same fate as the original rabbit.

On top of the wanton destruction of what was essentially a piece of public art, the fire could have easily set the nearby shelter hedge alight, he said.

Mr Jackson is equally disappointed. The rabbit took several weekends to create but that’s not the point.

It’s the fact people genuinely enjoyed it that mattered most to him.

Hundreds of teachers are expected to converge on Ashburton to gain new skills on how to educate in the 21st century and listen to top international speakers in April.

The Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association (MCPA) will be holding a two-day conference at the Hotel Ashburton on April 28 and 29.

President Chris Murphy said there were 400 places at the “Energise” conference and 250 had already been filled by Mid Canterbury teachers.

St John and the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to an incident involving a young man at Argyle Park on Middle Road about 9.10am on Monday.

“Unfortunately the patient was deceased at the scene,” St John said in its daily incident report.

Police would say only that the matter was in the hands of the coroner.

A 22-year-old Ashburton man was arrested yesterday for breach of bail, and on Monday night a 21-yearold man was arrested for disorderly behaviour after police callouts for disorder to Grove Street, Tinwald.

A black cloud might be hanging over the future of Dick Smith Holdings, but it was still business as usual in the company’s Ashburton store yesterday.

The Australian company owns 393 electronics stores across Australia and New Zealand and has been put into receivership.

The receivers, however, have made it clear they hope to sell the chain rather than close it down.

Jim Sarantinos, Ryan Eagle and James Stewart of Ferrier Hodgson were appointed as receivers by the retailer’s banking syndicate after it appointed McGrathNicol as voluntary administrator and say they will look at all business and restructuring and realisation options.

While the receivers are telling customers it will be business as usual, they have made it clear that outstanding gift vouchers won’t be honoured and deposits won’t be refunded.

Affected customers would become unsecured creditors of the group.

Mr Stewart said it was “too early to clearly identify the primary causes of the company’s

Ken Honeycutt, from the United States, is a technology integrationist and staff developer who spent 13 years teaching K-12 (a private online inter-

national academy) art and now travels the world sharing ideas with educators.

Vietnamese-born Khoa Do, who now lives in Australia, is a humanitarian, filmmaker and speaker who was awarded the 2005 Young Australian of the Year for his leadership, compassion and will to inspire and inform Australians on issues that affect their communities.

“We won’t see the likes of those speakers together in Mid Canterbury again,” Mr Murphy said.

With an ICT focus the conference would be beneficial for all

teachers in the 21st century, he said.

“We’ve worked really hard to make sure there’s something in there for both primary and secondary teachers.

“I’m really looking forward to it happening.”

The MCPA offered a similar conference every few years and has always had a good turnout with the last, about three years ago, attracting a crowd of 315.

The association would be making a small profit from the conference which would go back into helping organise other events like this, he said.

Yesterday the Westpac rescue helicopter airlifted a girl under five from the Methven Medical Centre to Christchurch Hospital emergency department. The child was reported to have a serious medical condition, and St John sent the helicopter with a paramedic on board after being alerted at 12.10pm.

Car accident Yesterday about 10am the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a single vehicle crash on the Rakaia Gorge Road about two kilometres north of the gorge bridges. Two people with what were believed to be minor injuries were transported to the Methven Medical Centre.

Multiple vehicle crash One person is dead and five are injured after a multiple vehicle crash in Rotorua yesterday. The crash, involving three cars and a truck, happened on State Highway 5, at Tarukenga. One person died at the scene, one person suffered serious injuries, one moderate injuries and three had minor injuries, police said.

Critical condition A Cobden man remains in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital after he was attacked at a party in Greymouth on New Year’s Eve. The 59-year-old was admitted to hospital the following day. His alleged attacker, Dennis Bernard Crozier, is in custody and has been remanded to appear in the Christchurch District Court today.

■ YOUNG ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR

Softball still a big part of life The Rotary Club of Ashburton’s Young Achiever of the Year Award recognised some of the district’s biggest talents in years gone by, but where are they now, and what are they doing? The Guardian’s Erin Tasker decided to track some of them down. Today we catch up with 1999 winner Suzy De Lautour (Truman).

here was always a fair chance Suzy De Lautour would play softball.

Her dad played for Canterbury, and her older sisters Kaye and Claire played, so as a youngster Suzie (nee Truman) would trot around softball diamonds after them, trying to keep up.

When it came time for a six or sevenyear-old Suzy to give it a go, she showed some natural flair for the game; flair that would one day see her represent her country for a number of years as a pitcher.

It’s been 15 years since she retired from the New Zealand women’s team – the White Sox – but softball is still very much a big part of her life.

Suzy now lives in Christchurch, and 10 years ago she married Paul De Lautour – a Black Sox and New Zealand Maori representative softballer himself – and they have two children who, naturally, took up the game that has given their parents so much.

Dru is 12 and is a member of the Canterbury under-15 development squad, and Shyla is 8 and plays under-9 tee-ball.

After years of playing for her country, Suzy is now giving back to the game that gave her so much. She’s involved in coaching a number of different teams and young pitchers, and loves nothing more than watching her own children play.

In some ways, her days spent travelling the world – including two women’s world series, in Canada in 1994 and Japan in 1998 – with the White Sox seem like just yesterday, but in others, it seems a lifetime ago.

As a youngster, Suzy made Mid Canterbury representative teams, but her big breakthrough came as a 15-year-old, when she made the New Zealand under-19 squad.

When she was about 19, Suzy moved to Christchurch and started playing premier softball, and a couple of years later she made her first White Sox team – a team which travelled to China to play.

“From there it just sort of carried on and I had a tour pretty much every year from there,” she said.

That was in 1992, and after a few full-on years Suzy “sort of retired”, before deciding to make a comeback in 1998.

Like most sportspeople who compete in Olympic sports, Suzy’s dream was to one day make it to the Olympics, but the team didn’t qualify in 1996 so Suzy eyed up the 2000 Games in Sydney.

“I played for another couple of years and was in the squad for the Olympic team for Sydney, but I didn’t make it, so decided that was it,” she said. It was time to start living a ‘normal’ life. Making money out of softball was difficult. It was played professionally overseas and Suzy spent a few months playing professionally in Italy in 1996, but playing for her country didn’t pay.

In all of her years representing New Zealand, Suzy was also working full-time in administration and secretarial type roles. But playing softball hadn’t come cheap.

“When I finished up I had some funds to catch up on, but they are experiences that I will never, ever regret.”

Today, she works as a customer relations manager for a business and life coach – a job she’s had for about 15 years now, and one she loves.

Much of her spare time is still spent on softball though. She’s coach of her daughter’s under-9 tee-ball team – which she said was an absolute delight – and is assistant coach of her son’s under-13 team, co-coach of a premier reserve grade women’s team, and assistant coach of the Canterbury under-15 girls’ development team, as well as personally coaching a couple of young pitchers.

“It’s funny, I coach now and I coach some young pitchers, and that gives me great pride when I watch them,” she said.

“The pride you get watching your own children, or children you’ve put a lot of time and effort into, it’s just a great feeling.”

She hopes that some of the young people coming through the ranks now, will go on to bigger and better things. She’s been there, done that, and loved every minute of it.

“There wasn’t many places I didn’t go with softball, and going to Italy I got to see places I hadn’t seen before,” she said.

“If you don’t play sport, sometimes these opportunities aren’t there, but these days you can certainly go places with softball.”

She doesn’t miss the three-times a day trainings she had to endure when she was trying to get to the Olympics though, and admits she’s far from as fit as she once was.

Today, her fitness regime is a lot simpler, and far more enjoyable.

“Last year I played in a social team and that was an absolute blast, and it was like riding a bike … it was pretty easy, although the body’s not the same as it used to be.

“There is certainly injuries that stay with you because it’s a really hard sport on your body, because it’s very stop and start.”

It’s a tough sport, but it’s also one that’s on the rise in New Zealand – Ashburton included – and Suzy said today there were plenty of opportunities for people to play professionally overseas and gain scholarships in the USA. A number of New Zealand women are currently on softball scholarships to America.

As with many sports though, too many players were lost around the 17-19 age range as life took over and they stopped playing.

“What we would like to do is try and negate that by trying to keep them playing as much as possible and giving them more challenges and more passion for going up to the next level.”

And with softball and baseball due to make Olympics comebacks in Japan in 2020 Suzy said it was a great time to be a young person playing the game she loves.

Not playing at the Olympics was the one regret she had.

“I was really, really gutted when I didn’t make the Olympic team, but I didn’t have that crash hot a season so it wasn’t a complete surprise to me, but it was one of my main regrets,” she said.

On the other side of the coin, there were too many highlights to single out just one.

But one of the career highlights up there with the rest, was winning the Ashburton Young Achiever Award 18 years ago.

“There was lots of highlights, but actually one was being named that Young Achiever in Ashburton because that was really something.”

The 32-page copy marking the anniversary of the January 7 attack on the paper’s staff accuses Islamic fundamentalists, organised religion, an irresolute government and intelligence failures for the 2015 violence in France by Muslim extremists that started with that day.

Seventeen people died at Charlie Hebdo and at a kosher supermarket two days later.

They were among the first victims of a string of attacks by Islamic fundamentalists in France last year that ultimately left at least 147 people dead and hundreds of others injured.

Louis Dreyfus Commodities has said that its 53-year-old Swiss billionaire chair is pregnant with twin girls. The conglomerate said in a statement that Margarita LouisDreyfus is due in early April and will only take a “brief break” from working before returning full-time later that month.

Russian-born Louis-Dreyfus became one of the richest women in the world in the years after she married famous French businessman Robert Louis-Dreyfus in 1992.

She subsequently took over his company and the Olympique de Marseille football team on his death from leukaemia in 2009.

Louis-Dreyfus’ current partner is 52-year-old businessman Philipp Hildebrand.

Sunnis cut ties with Tehran Saudi Arabia’s Sunni allies are rallying behind the kingdom and several have joined Riyadh in severing or downgrading diplomatic relations with Tehran, deepening a sectarian split across the Middle East.

Bahrain and Sudan cut all ties with Iran, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), home to hundreds of thousands of Iranians, downgraded its relations. Saudi Arabia broke off relations after a mob stormed its embassy in Tehran.

Shi’ite power Iran accused Saudi Arabia of using the attack on the embassy as an “excuse” to sever ties and further increase sectarian tensions, after Shi’ites across the world denounced Saudi Arabia’s execution of Shi’ite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

A man was shot dead in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province and two Sunni mosques

in Iraq’s Shi’ite-majority Hilla province were bombed in the fallout from the dispute between the Middle East’s top Sunni and Shi’ite powers.

Oil prices rose more than two per cent, overcoming economic weakness in Asia, as the two big petroleum exporters traded insults and tensions spilled into other crude producers such as Iraq.

Crude importer China declared itself “highly concerned” with the developments, in a rare foray into Middle East diplomacy.

The United States and Germany called for restraint, while Russia offered to mediate an end to the dispute.

The row threatened to derail efforts to end Syria’s five-year-old civil war, where Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Arab powers support rebel groups against Iran-backed

President Bashar al-Assad.

In neighbouring Lebanon, newspapers said the spat had clouded the hopes of filling the vacant presidency that had been raised last month after Iran and Saudi Arabia both voiced support for a power-sharing deal.

After a furious response in Shi’ite communities worldwide to the Sunni kingdom’s execution of Shi’ite Muslim cleric Nimr al-Nimr, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel alJubeir said Iran was creating “terrorist cells” among the kingdom’s Shi’ite minority.

Saudi Arabia executed Nimr and three other Shi’ites on terrorism charges on Saturday, alongside dozens of Sunni jihadists.

Shi’ite Iran hailed him as a “martyr” and warned Saudi Arabia’s ruling Al Saud family of “divine revenge”.

Fourteen die in bus fire A fire on a bus in northern China yesterday killed 14 people and injured more than 30, and police were hunting for a suspect, authorities said. The incident happened in Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia region, at about 7am, said a press officer at the Ningxia fire department. Police were hunting a suspect named as Ma Yongping in relation to a “major crime,” state broadcaster CCTV reported a few hours later. A press officer at Yinchuan Public Security Bureau, who gave his surname, Ding, confirmed the notice to local police authorities and said police were still investigating.

Licence checks in Obama’s gun rules “These are not only recommendations that are well within my legal authority and the executive branch, but they’re also ones that the overwhelming majority of the American people, including gun owners, support,” Obama said during a meeting with Attorney-General Loretta Lynch and other advisers.

Obama is igniting a political firestorm by bypassing congress with the measures, which could spark legal challenges.

Republicans say Obama is misusing his powers.

Stymied by congress’ inaction on gun control, the president asked his advisers in recent months to examine new ways he could use his executive authority to tighten gun rules unilaterally after multiple mass shootings generated outrage nationwide.

The White House had drafted a proposal on licences previously but was con-

cerned it could be challenged in court and hard to enforce.

The president’s use of executive action launches his final year with a move that Republicans say exemplifies misuse of his powers. Congress, which is controlled

by Republicans, rejected Obama’s proposals for legislation to tighten gun rules in 2013.

“The president is at minimum subverting the legislative branch, and potentially overturning its will,” Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan said in a statement before the White House announcement.

Republicans have called for more focus on mental health care rather than measures to restrict gun ownership. The White House said it would ask congress for $US500 million in its 2017 budget to boost access to mental health care.

The White House has unveiled gun control measures that require more gun sellers to get licences and more gun buyers to undergo background checks.

They are moves President Barack Obama said were well within his authority to implement without congressional approval.

The US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives now will require that people who sell guns at stores, at gun shows or over the Internet be licensed and conduct checks, officials said.

The ATF was finalising a rule requiring background checks for buyers of dangerous weapons from a trust, corporation or other legal entity as well.

Obama, speaking to reporters before the measures were made public, said they were consistent with the US Constitution’s Second Amendment, which protects the right to bear arms.

Welfare filled with cracks Sue Newman

here’s something very wrong with the way we care about children if two Christchurch youngsters could be neglected to a point where they were found malnourished and covered in sores.

Questions need to be asked about a system that has allowed the seven and eight-year-old to fall through the care cracks to such a degree.

Those kids attended school, obviously were part of their community and yet no one appears to have noticed their appalling physical and probably emotional condition.

The situation came to light by chance after a previous carer was asked to collect the youngsters from school. She cleaned the youngsters up, had them checked by a doctor, took them to CYPS and of course they were returned to their family.

There’s something seriously wrong with a system that returns neglected children to a home and an individual who is obviously lacking in the most basic understanding of the word care. Family is important, but not when that family is clearly dysfunctional, clearly lacking in the most basic understanding of care and nurturing.

Poverty is not an excuse. There are thousands of adults around New Zealand providing a loving, supportive and healthy environment for the children in their care in spite of having very little money.

We constantly talk about the importance of children living in a safe and healthy environment but we continue to have an appallingly high level of child abuse. We’re told the number of reported cases is dropping, but the horror stories that surface often belie that claim.

As long as our system allows people who should never have the right to parent to have children in their care, then child abuse – physical, emotional, sexual and neglect – will continue to be part of the Kiwi lifestyle.

Is it over work, understaffing, lack of knowledge or simple political correctness that sees us sticking with the belief that children should be with family, that we must keep trying to fix unfixable families.

We’re failing large numbers of young New Zealanders, allowing them to be damaged by the people who should be their strongest advocates, their families, but sometimes family just isn’t enough.

Holiday period a time for self-reflection and goal-setting “It’s not enough to be busy. So are the ants. The question is – what are we busy about?”

T

his holiday period, if you have some downtime, I recommend seizing the opportunity for a bit of self-reflection and goal-setting.

I was lucky enough to spend some time at the Melbourne Business School recently, where I attended a leadership training course with a difference.

All participants had permission to be selfish and spend some time thinking about ourselves and where we want to be. It was a unique and extremely rewarding experience.

How often do we take the time to pull back from the stresses of our daily lives, to consider all of the events and moments that are now behind us, that shaped who we are today?

How often do we stop to think about the lessons we have learned along the way, and how we can use those lessons to keep shaping ourselves for the future?

We are all busy being busy.

But this holiday period offers a perfect opportunity for us to reflect. To look back at 2015, or

Jeremy Adamson beyond, and reflect on the things we have achieved – our choices, successes, failures, opportunities for improvement.

All it takes is time, and only you can do it.

The catch is that self-reflection doesn’t work with a smartphone in our left hand and a TV remote in our right. We need to disengage properly, completely unplug.

Hiking alone in the hills? Definitely. Gardening? Sure. Star Wars Episode 7? Mmm, maybe not.

The key is to clear your head, avoid distractions and think.

“Don’t mistake movement for achievement.”

But what to do with all of this insightful self-reflection? The key is in turning our musings into positive future steps.

We need to take active steps to spring forward and proactively consider how we will take our learnings and make changes.

Just two or three changes will do – but be proactive.

Set some goals – not the usual New Year’s resolutions, but some real, tangible goals – and work at them.

Research shows that if you set a goal, you have a 6 to 8 per cent chance of success. If you set a goal and write it down, your odds climb to 25 to 30 per cent.

But if you set a goal, write it down, share it with others and have someone check your progress, your chance of success hits 85 per cent.

If only Lotto worked that way!

We all have busy lives, full of distraction.

During this holiday season take some time out, be selfish and reflect. Think about what your priorities are, where you need to be heading next.

Ensure that out of all that movement, some of it is heading towards the achievement of your goals.

Oh, and when you’re finished?

Watch Star Wars Episode 7. It’s bloody good!

Rather than seeing a fall in the share market as a negative he said KiwiSaver investors could also benefit from it.

“The one thing to remember with KiwiSaver is it is a regular contribution.

“Markets going down are not the end of the world as you can buy more units for the same money.”

Binu said savers should expect volatility in the markets to continue this year on the back of global geopolitical concerns.

Investors who switched from a growth fund to a conservative fund in the down time would have crystallised their losses and missed out on the recovery.

Binu said those who avoided growth investments such as shares also risked having the value of their investment eaten away by inflation over time.

“Once you move the bar in wages, that bar does tend to stay there. There is a lot of competition for good quality farm managers.”

Hoggard said farm workers could get up to that level with as little as four to six years’ work on the job.

Many came straight from school with little more than NCEA qualifications. But the right attitude was more important, he said.

“To me attitude is everything.”

Hoggard said tougher times in the dairy industry did not mean pay rates would fall as there could be fewer jobs as herd numbers were cut back.

“There may be a few less positions advertised. But there will still be positions out there.”

KiwiSaver members are being urged not to panic after share markets around the world tumbled over concerns about China and the Middle East.

New Zealand’s benchmark index the S&P/NZX50 was down 1.1 per cent just after lunch yesterday, and Wall St was described as having the worst start to the year since 2001.

But Binu Paul, managing director of KiwiSaver comparison tool SavvyKiwi, said a negative start to the year did not predict the rest of 2016.

“That is just a statistic. It really doesn’t reflect how the rest of the year will look.”

Paul said if KiwiSaver members believed they were in the right fund they should stick with it.

“If you are investing for the longer term ... if you believe you are in the right fund stick to it.

The proviso is you are in the right fund.”

Add the chicken to the pan and simmer for 4 to 5 minutes or until the chicken is just cooked.

Spread some of the reserved sauce onto each tortilla then place 2 to 3 tablespoons of the chicken mixture on one end.

Roll up and place in a lightly greased oven proof dish. Pour the remaining sauce on the top of the enchiladas then sprinkle with the grated cheese.

Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until the top is golden and the enchiladas are heated through.

Spicy steak with Mexican style salad 2 t ground cumin 2 t ground chilli powder 450g sirloin steak Salad: 1 can black beans rinsed and drained 3 C corn 1 large red pepper, finely diced 1-2 chillies 3 spring onions, very finely sliced 4 large tomatoes, diced 1 avocado, diced Juice of 1 lemon or lime.

■ Mix spices and rub quarter over each piece of steak.

■ Set a side to allow spices to infuse meat ■ In large bowl combine salad ingredients. Season and cover ■ Spray pan with oil and cook steaks to your liking.

■ Rest for a few minutes then slice thinly ■ Place slices over salad and sprinkle with coriander.

■ Combine all salad ingredients and season well ■ Sprinkle skewers with extra sumac and serve with salad.

Salad: 1/4 C basil leaves 1/2 C sliced roasted red pepper 1 small red onion thinly sliced 3 C baby rocket 1/2 C drained marinated olives, pitted 40g crumbled feta 1 1/2T balsamic vinegar 1 medium baguette, torn into pieces ■ Lay one chicken fillet on a piece of cling-film top with another piece ■ Beat with meat mallet until 1cm thick ■ Peel off film and discard ■ Top with quarter of the feta, basil leaves and roasted red pepper ■ Roll up to enclose filling ■ Tie with string at even intervals ■ Repeat process with other fillets ■ Oil barbecue grill plate and heat ■ Cook chicken and egg plant rounds in batches ■ Turn every 12 mins until chicken is cooked through ■ Roughly chop eggplant ■ Combine all salad ingredients ■ Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and toss ■ Remove string from involtini and slice chicken ■ Serve with baguettes.

Peppy pineapple salsa 1 C diced pineapple 1 red chilli, finely diced Juice of 1 lime 1 t fish sauce 1 t sesame oil ■ Toss all ingredients and chill.

Cucumber and corn salsa 1/2 C corn 1/2 C cucumber finely diced 1/4 C red pepper finely diced 1 handful of basil, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 1T white wine vinegar 1t olive oil.

■ Toss all together.

Turmeric, herb and chicken kebabs 600g skinless, boneless chicken thighs 2t ground turmeric 2T olive oil 3T lemon juice Pinch of salt 3T fresh oregano, chopped Spinach wraps Hummus, lettuce and tomatoes Turmeric, herb and chicken kebabs

Persian beef skewers with chopped tomato and mint salad

8 short bamboo skewers 2 medium red peppers in 2cm pieces 4 large tomatoes, chopped 1 Lebanese cucumber trimmed and chopped 400g cannellini beans rinsed and drained 1/2 C mint leaves, roughly chopped Freshly ground black pepper Lemon wedges to serve.

■ Combine yoghurt, 1T lemon juice, turmeric, sumac and garlic in shallow glass dish ■ Add beef and stir to coat. Cover and let marinade at least one hour ■ Soak skewers in cold water at least 20 mins ■ Drain beef and thread with capsicum onto skewers ■ Heat grill pan and spray with oil ■ Grill skewers 5-6 mins, turning.

■ Cut chicken into thin strips ■ Mix turmeric, oil, lemonjuice, salt and oregano ■ Add chicken and marinate at least one hour or overnight ■ Thread onto skewers ■ Cook under medium grill, brushing with marinade and turning once until cooked ■ Warm wraps ■ Spread with hummus ■ Add lettuce and tomatoes and chicken skewers.

The World Buskers’ Festival is coming to Ashburton courtesy of a new roadshow on January 19.

The Christchurch-based annual festival started from a small group of humble street performers in 1994.

While the 2016 edition will feature a range of genres – from circus to cabaret, burlesque to theatre, and music to aerial acrobatics – it will also have its very own roadshow for the first time.

Other stops on the roadshow tour are Timaru, Lincoln, Rangiora, Kaiapoi, New Brighton and Lyttelton.

Those who will take the stage in Ashburton, at Baring Square East, include Australian acts ADDJ and Hula Queen, Sharon Mahoney from Canada, New Zealand’s Biggest Little Circus and other Kiwi performers.

Dubbed Australia’s acro-brat, ADDJ will bring a wild ride of adrenalin-fuelled gags and punk-rock antics.

Acrobat and comedian Eloise Green will bring contrast with her Hula Queen, sure to dazzle with death-defying moves and multiple hula hoops.

Actress Sharon Mahoney performs as Tallulah, who pushes the boundaries of social inter-

action and comic possibility.

Biggest Little Circus involves a cast of three who performs everything from high-skilled juggling, aerial acrobatics and even a human-changing room.

The Baring Square East road will close for the day and night, creating an extended performance and viewing area around a large trailer stage. The roadshow will run in the day, midday to 5pm, followed by an evening variety show from 6pm to 8pm.

The World Buskers Festival annually attracts about 250,000 people over 11 days and nights in Christchurch, featuring 67 performers from 13 countries.

It will run this year from January 14 to 24.

Festival director Glen Pickering said the aim this year had been to move the festival back into the streets of Christchurch after it was forced to pull most events into Hagley Park postearthquake, but also to make sure that the event’s entertainment could be shared further afield.

The 52 acts this year include finalists from America’s Got Talent, a dozen world record holders from the Guinness Book of Records, award-winning comedians and the top four burlesque performers in the world.

Stacey McKerchar (nee Carr) with baby Jack: Adjusting to life after hockey has made her a more organised person.

Black Stick a home town girl Mid Canterbury has produced some sporting superstars in recent years. Many are still in the news, but some you don’t hear about so often any more. So where are they now? The Guardian’s Erin Tasker found out. Today she catches up with former Black Stick Stacey McKerchar.

R

upturing her ACL and missing the Black Sticks’ trip to South Africa for the Champions Trophy proved to be a blessing in disguise for Stacey Carr.

Had it not happened, she wouldn’t have been in a Christchurch pub one night in 2009 meeting a young man called Charlie McKerchar.

Today, Stacey and Charlie have been married for two years and have a one-year-old son Jack.

It’s been four years since Stacey retired from the New Zealand women’s hockey side as a 27-year-old, and life has changed immensely in that time.

She’s got an everyday job, has a home in the town where she grew up, and she’s a wife and a mum.

Stacey works part-time in marketing and HR support for Carrfields Ltd. It involves putting together employment contracts, health and safety and organising company events like customer days, staff events, group sponsorship, A&P shows and field days.

Before marrying, Stacey was a Carr, and Carrfields is a longstanding family business.

When she retired from hockey, she wanted to come back to that

family business and back to the town she hadn’t lived in full-time since going to boarding school in Christchurch at age 12.

It’s a decision she doesn’t regret.

“I love living in Ashburton, after living in big cities for 10 years it definitely makes you appreciate home.

“It is so easy to get places and I love being close to my family.

“There is a great group of young people in Ashburton that I either went to school with or have met since returning home.”

Looking back on her years away from Ashburton, Stacey said she loved every minute of her hockey career.

She spent eight years playing for the Black Sticks and struggled to pinpoint just one career highlight.

There was her first cap in Japan in 2003, the Athens Olympics in 2004 where they finished sixth, and the Commonwealth Games in India in 2010 where they won silver.

“Obviously the team had some up and down performances at major tournaments but it was a great way to see the world playing with 18 other girls who shared the same passion and commitment.

“It was tough financially as

hockey is not professional in New Zealand so you played for the love of the game, not the money.

“But I was lucky enough to have a very supportive family who helped me achieve my goals and dreams.”

Being a Black Stick meant following a full-time training programme which meant anywhere from 20 to 25 hours of hockey or fitness sessions each week.

“Obviously there was a lot of fitness testing, interval training, long distance running, speed sessions, agility sessions as well as weights and core training.”

Being fit was an integral part of the athlete lifestyle, and one she likes to maintain today, although not to the same extent.

“Since retiring I still like to keep myself fit by running, walking, swimming and the odd gym class when I can fit it in with being a mum and working.

“I have also entered in a few events like the 6-hour Spring Challenge race and the Muddy Good Run as a bit of fun and motivation to stay fit.”

She doesn’t miss the intense training regime or the injuries that are part and parcel with sport – she ruptured her ACL twice - but she does miss the

girls she played with.

“One good thing is we still remain in contact with each other and always make an effort to catch up throughout the year when we can at certain events or occasions.”

She misses playing in international fixtures too, and can say that she got to see the world as a hockey player.

“I would have to say Holland was my favourite country that I played in because they are the best country in the world for hockey and the atmosphere at every tournament was amazing.

“It is a clean country, with a great lifestyle and night life.”

After years of top level hockey, Stacey has no regrets and is still involved with the sport that has given her so much.

Last year, along with her mum Glenys, she coached a Mayfield School team of 5-7 year olds, and played the odd game for her club side HSOB Burnside when they were short.

Like any working mother though, life is a juggling act.

Fortunately, Stacey isn’t one to sit still for long.

“I have really enjoyed the balance of working and being a mother.

“I am not someone who can just sit around home all day so getting out and going to work for three mornings a week is refreshing and definitely keeps my mind active.

“I am lucky to have such a great nanny who comes in home to look after Jack while I work.

“I work anywhere between 20 to 30 hours a week and I do 12 hours where I go into the office and the rest I do at home when Jack is asleep either in the afternoon or at night.”

Jack turned one in November.

“He is a great wee boy who is very busy and loves attention,” Stacey said.

“I have always liked children, but when they are your own it is so much more special.

“The first year has gone very quickly and it is amazing to see how much they grow and change month by month. Both Charlie and I love being parents.”

She’s adjusted well to the life of a mum, and a working mum.

“The only thing I find is there is not only you to think about anymore, and you cannot just run out the door.

“But you soon adjust to this and I think it has made me more organised if anything.”

Almost 100 golfers chose to walk off the excess of Christmas and New Year on Saturday when they took part in the Tinwald Golf Club’s New Year tournament.

In almost perfect playing conditions, club members were joined by players from around Canterbury to vie for prizes

in the stableford competition.

Chris Hart won the men’s senior section with 43 stableford points on countback from Robin Sim, Guy Wetere won the junior section with 43 on countback from John Schofield while Sue Newman won the women’s section on 41 on countback from Leen Bell.

Wozniacki into second round Caroline Wozniacki - one of the ASB Classic’s key drawcards - has endured a few early scares before advancing through to the second round of the Auckland tournament yesterday.

The Danish third seed was forced to do it tough in her opening round match, overcoming a gutsy effort from world number 57 Danka Kovinic of Montenegro.

Wozniacki, the first of the “big three” in action on centre court yesterday, looked in all sorts of trouble early on, dropping the first four games.

But just when it looked as though Kovinic was taking control, Wozniacki reeled off six straight games to take the first set 6-4.

The second set went more to plan for Wozniacki, with the star finding more consistency with her ground strokes.

The only hiccup for Wozniacki came late in the set, when, at 5-3 up at serving for the match, she let Kovinic back in with

a sniff with a couple of unforced errors.

But just as the crowd were beginning to prepare themselves for another lengthy arm wrestle, following a marathon threesetter between Francesca Schiavone and Tamira Paszek in the opening match of the day, Wozniacki immediately broke back to seal the match.

Schiavone, the former French Open champion, was a surprise first round exit after falling to Paszek 7-6(4) 4-6 6-3.

Meanwhile, one of the top seeds at the ASB Classic has likened the on court experience to playing “in a bar”, due to a new entertainment facility set up behind the centre court and the noisy court side dining.

Fourth seed and former Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was left frustrated after her first round win over Mona Barthel yesterday, claiming it was difficult to concentrate.

corporate boxes, claiming they were moving between the first and second serves.

“With the music behind [the court] it was like a bar,” said Kuznetsova. “ It’s not good for players and there is no way to play with it.”

Organisers have erected a temporary bar and entertainment facility behind the Robinson stand (In the previous years it was located out near the practice courts).

There’s a big screen to watch the action, a couple of bars and a DJ. But the music - and the ill timed waiters - irked Kuznetsova.

“I talked to the umpire during the match and I think they turned it off,” said Kuznetsova.”

The world No25 also spoke with tournament director Karl Budge about the court side food service after the match.

Budge confirmed that music is played between matches and during the warmup, but turned right down during matches.
