The big dry is starting to bite across the Ashburton District with taps close to running dry in Mt Somers during the weekend and water restrictions, district wide, stepping up to a new level. For Mt Somers residents, a population surge over the new year period meant extreme pressure was put on the village’s water supply.
On Friday the alarm sounded when the supply was almost exhausted and that meant the Ashburton District Council was forced to implement emergency restrictions, limiting residents use of water to drinking, cooking and bathing only.
