Threat closes Winz offices across Canty Police have arrested the man whose threatening behaviour resulted in the closure of Work and Income offices across Canterbury yesterday morning.

The 50-year-old is accused of making verbal threats to security staff outside the Work and Income office in Linwood.

It was alleged he had threatened to fetch a gun and return to the premises.

Police were alerted to the inci-

dent shortly before midday.

Acting District Commander, detective superintendent Peter Read said the man had left the scene before police officers arrived, however he was soon tracked down.

“Police spoke to the man on the phone and met with him shortly after 1.30pm,” Mr Read said.

The man was formally interviewed and charged yesterday afternoon.

“Police would like to reassure members of the public that no firearm was sighted by the security staff and nor was one located during a search of a residential property,” he said.

The man is due to appear in Christchurch District Court on February 11.

In response to the threat, the Ministry of Social Development shut Winz offices across the Canterbury region, including the

Ashburton office on Cass Street, where a sign was posted on the front door, advising clients of the unexpected closure and asking them to make new appointments. The office was reopened later in the afternoon.

Young at heart: This weekend Gwen and Frank Emery will celebrate their 90th birthdays in style.

Together since they were teens, this weekend Gwen and Frank Emery will celebrate their 90th birthdays together.

An inseparable couple, Mr and Mrs Emery met while working in different departments at Farmers in Timaru in the 1940s, Mr Emery was an apprentice mechanic while Mrs Emery worked in the furnishing department.

The got on like a house on fire and have been together ever since.

With birthdays only weeks apart, the couple are no strangers to joint celebrations – ringing in their 60th, 70th and 80th years together – and this year is no exception.

Family from all over Australia and New Zealand will descend on Ashburton tomorrow for a celebratory shindig.

With six children, 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, it’s likely to be a large affair.

While neither know much about exactly what was happening this weekend, both were look-

ing forward to it. “[We’re] excited, oh yes, but scared too,” Mrs Emery joked.

Still living together in their own home, the pair are fiercely independent, relying only on one family member to help with the lawns.

The couple also love to get out and about, they used to do a lot of walking – especially in the bush – and Mrs Emery was a keen Mahjong player.

Now though, they opt for a more relaxed lifestyle and are keen gardeners.

Admirers of New Zealand’s beautiful surroundings they still take regular drives together and holiday as often as they can – one of their current favourite destinations is the West Coast.

As for what has kept the couple so young at heart Mr Emery said it was nothing out of the ordinary.

“We’ve looked after ourselves, nothing crazy,” he said.

“We just get on together, we never argue,” Mrs Emery said.

As for tips to other young couples, Mrs Emery offers up a simple tip – “just be happy together, take things in your stride”.

When Bruce Argyle woke up yesterday morning he had no idea he was minutes away from being targeted by a scam artist.

The Mid Canterbury man was phoned early yesterday by a man purporting to be from “the government department of Prime Minister John Key’s office”.

The man then proceeded to tell Mr Argyle that due to the fact he was of “good character, was good with money and had never been to jail” he was entered in a draw for a large sum of cash.

To Mr Argyle’s surprise he was told he had won and was the recipient of $6300.

To “prove” he was legitimate the man told Mr Argyle he knew where he lived and his full name – although he did ask him to clarify the spelling.

As the conversation progressed, Mr Argyle was given an international phone number and told to call it, provide the person on the other end with his bank account details and the money would be his.

Thankfully, Mr Argyle didn’t bother with the phone number and hung up the phone.

“I do like a bit of spice, and my favourite food in the whole world would have to be Italian – but I’m not sure if there’s an Italian stall at the festival or not,” she said.

Mrs Quinn has a word of advice for festival-goers: “You’ve got to get in early because the stalls sell out fast.”

The Waitangi on East festival will also run today, offering a wide range of arts, crafts and brica-brac for sale.

Ashburton man Bruce Argyle was the recipient of an odd phone call yesterday morning.

Francoise and Alain Belpadrome will bring a taste of New Caledonia to today’s Multicultural Bite Festival.

For the sixth year running the Ashburton couple will be manning a stall at the festival selling pineapple cake, which is a national favourite in their home country.

“It’s very popular in New Caledonia because it’s quick and easy to make,” Mrs Belpadrome said.

And it appears to have gained the same appeal in Ashburton, prompting the Belpadromes to up production to cater for the growing demand.

Crepes will also be on their menu today, and together with their 10-year-old grandson Hurley Mafutuna, the Belpadromes will be up bright and early to set up their stall on East Street in time for the festival’s 11am start.

Local chef Chantelle Quinn will also be on site early in the day to sample the range of delicacies on

‘Hooligans’ rob tourists

When Jane Presto arrived in Mt Somers in early January the last thing she expected was to be aggressively bailed up and robbed by a group of “hooligans”.

A Wanaka native, Ms Presto and a friend were trekking the Mt Somers Track when the weather turned.

Instead of making the journey home, the pair decided to head back to the car park area and pitch their tent before heading off for Wanaka in the morning.

However, after a few hours they were awoken by the revving of a truck.

lieved to be young men jumped out and began making a ruckus, shouting and yelling.

“There were three to four guys yahooing, I was quite scared [it] was really crazy out there,” Ms Presto said.

With the truck lights on full the group then began making threats. “‘There’s going to be a couple of bodies out here in the morning’, that type of thing,” she said.

“I think they had done it before, they were well versed on scaring the shit out of tourists.”

When the men finally left the campsite, Ms Presto’s companion checked the surrounding area, thinking all was okay.

Unfortunately when she awoke Ms Presto discovered her backpack, which had been sitting outside the tent and contained car keys, her wallet and a considerable sum of cash, had been taken.

Distressed, the pair began combing the roadside with the help of locals in the hope of finding the bag.

Finding nothing they hitched a ride back to Wanaka to pick up a set of spare keys before making their way back to Staveley to retrieve the vehicle.

On the way they reported the incident to Geraldine Police but were told there was not a lot that could be done as the pair did not have a number plate or any other

identifying information.

Confused, Ms Presto said there was no way she nor her friend would have “risked their wellbeing” to get out of the tent.

While she has little hope her belongings will be retrieved, Ms Presto said the incident should not have happened in the first place and wants to raise awareness about the group who robbed her.

Police confirmed they were aware of the incident but could provide no further information on the matter.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact either the Ashburton or Geraldine Police Station.

In brief NZ flying champs here New Zealand’s top amateur pilots will go head-to-head with Australia’s best later this month when Ashburton hosts the Flying NZ National championships.

Winners over a range of categories from five regional rallies will compete for national honours, with several Ashburton pilots winning their way into the event at October’s Alpine region event, also hosted by Ashburton. In conjunction with the national event, Ashburton will be hosting The Wings International competition between New Zealand and Australia. An Ashburton team of Ian Begbie, Nicholas Tait and Grant Hopewell will represent New Zealand in the three man formation flying team.

The Aussie-Kiwi challenge will take place on February 24 and will start with a welcome by mayor Angus McKay and a flag raising ceremony before the teams start the battle of the skies for trans-Tasman honours.

The national competition will run from February 25 to 27.

Cars collide on West St St John Ashburton attended a vehicle collision between two cars on West Street at 5.41pm on Thursday. Two people were assessed at the scene but were uninjured.

Charge related to death A woman has been charged in relation to the death of Te Atatu pensioner Cun Xiu Tian, police say.

The 43-year-old woman has been charged with accessory after the fact to burglary. She will appear in the Waitakere District Court on Wednesday next week. A 19-yearold man previously charged with murder and sexual violation in relation to Ms Tian’s death is due to reappear in the High Court at Auckland the same day.

A drunk 14-year-old boy spent the night in the care of the Greymouth police after they found him in a “very intoxicated” state in Cobden.

Sergeant Brent Cook said police were alerted by a concerned member of the public. Officers caught up with the “extremely drunk” boy in Bright St. “If we find out who supplied the lad with the alcohol, they will be prosecuted,” Mr Cook said.

Police are urging motorists to drive carefully and be patient on Mid Canterbury roads over the long weekend.

Road policing units and highway patrol will be out in force to monitor drivers from Friday until Monday.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield, of Ashburton, said there will be more people on the roads this weekend and people need to be patient.

Anyone travelling this weekend needs to make sure they leave with enough time to account for traffic delays.

Many vehicles will also be slower on the road because they will be towing caravans and boats.

People also need to make sure they have plenty of rest and that their vehicles are safe and up to scratch, he said.

Drummer finds new rhythm

As the drummer in a band, Simon Christensen knows his music.

But a career change means he’s having to learn about a whole new world of music – the world of nursery rhymes.

Simon, 32, has packed in his job of nine years – at Harvey Norman – and is about to hit the books again and become a qualified preschool teacher.

It’s an industry dominated by women, it’s believed Vincent Brierly at the Baptist Preschool is currently Ashburton’s only male preschool teacher. But Simon can’t understand why more men don’t do it.

“I thought there’s a calling for it, and there’s a lot of men that should be doing it.

“It’s not seen as much of a manly job I guess, but it kinda is, because you just get to run around and play.”

Simon knew little about preschools until his own daughter, and her sisters, started at preschool.

“The girls went to Baptist with Vince, and they just loved Vince,” Simon said.

Simon – who has a mix of dyslexia and ADHD called Irlen Syndrome – found preschool to be a perfect environment for him. He has lots of energy to burn, and so do the kids. Simon loves music, and so do the kids.

Simon has been in bands since he left school. As part of Doppler, he toured the country and got a song on the radio, and for the past three years he’s been the drummer for Couger Lounge.

Music is his passion and always will be, and he can’t wait to bring that passion to his new career, with music playing a big role in preschools; albeit vastly different music from that he’s used to.

Thanks to five-year-old daughter Lily, his knowledge of kids’ music is growing, he knows the popular movie Frozen inside out, and he’s had plenty of dressups practise.

PM’s plans The Prime Minister will mark Waitangi Day by attending the NRL Auckland Nines tournament at Eden Park and other events in Auckland. John Key had no official engagements yesterday, as other politicians braved wet weather to attend Te Tii Marae at Waitangi.

A spokeswoman for Mr Key said he would spend today in Auckland.

“The Prime Minister will celebrate Waitangi Day in Auckland where he will attend a couple of events, including the NRL Auckland Nines.” On Thursday Mr Key announced he would not go to Waitangi this weekend – the first time he has not done so since his first Waitangi Day as National Party leader in 2007, when he committed to return every year if he became Prime Minister. - NZME

GCSB head named A new head of New Zealand’s foreign intelligence agency has been named. The Government Communications Security Bureau’s chief legal adviser Lisa Fong will become the agency’s acting director from February 15. Ms Fong will replace current acting director Una Jagose, who is leaving the GCSB to become Solicitor-General.

Minister Responsible for the GCSB Christopher Finlayson said Ms Fong was a capable leader, and he was pleased she had agreed to take the role. Ms Fong has been the agency’s chief legal adviser since April 2013, and was previously employed by Crown Law for eight years.

lenge. “I worked at Harvey Norman and I played the drums, but I wanted a career change, something I had to study for,” he said.

He learnt massage as part of his studies at the New Zealand Institute of Sport when he first left school, and was tossing up between massage, and preschool teaching. Preschool won.

He’d spent nine years with Harvey Norman, both in Ashburton and Auckland, starting off in senior sales in the electrical department, before moving on to the role of manager at their warehouse, and then taking on

the running of the South Island distribution centre for furniture.

He finished at Harvey Norman in December and has been enjoying spending time with Lily before the study life begins.

He’ll study through the Open Polytechnic, and already has study groups planned with two local women who have been accepted for the same course.

Childs Play Preschool, in Tinwald, have taken him under their wing, giving him work and offering to help him through his studies, which Simon is grateful for.

to start interacting with the district’s pre-schoolers.

He is a fun guy and plans to have fun, but he knows there will be plenty of times he’ll need to be strict and serious too, and he can do that – just ask his daughter.

He hopes Lily will benefit from his career change too. He’s picking he’ll learn skills to make him a better dad, and Lily’s very excited for him.

“My daughter is very proud of me, she’s prouder that I’m going to be a preschool teacher, than she is about my drumming.”

Joyce cops sex toy A protester at Te Tii Marae has thrown a sex toy at Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce.

Labour leader Andrew Little said it was “a creative item” to have thrown at a politician, but it was not rare for politicians to have objects thrown at them, such as “vegetable matter, clods of dirt, here at Waitangi actually”.

“It’s a matter of historical record. Things get thrown at politicians, not just insults.

“It is a creative item, I guess, to throw at a politician and perhaps the person throwing it thought there was a message in it. I can’t imagine what that could be.”

Told the woman had referred to taking away sovereignty, Mr Little said, “right”. “The connection between sexual devices and sovereignty is not immediately apparent to me, but I think we should not underestimate the fact people are very hot under the collar about TPP.” - NZME

Teen farewelled Police were on hand at the funeral service for Pacer Willacy-Scott, which drew about 200 people to Anzac Hall in Featherston and concluded with a haka send-off.

Pacer, 15, was a passenger in a stolen car that crashed into a power pole on Sunday, which also killed Featherston teenager and fellow passenger Hoani Korewha, 15. The driver, aged 14 or 15, has appeared in court on a raft of driving charges, while a fourth teenager has been referred to Youth Aid. Pacer’s casket, plain and adorned with flowers and messages of farewell inked on the side, was carried into the hall by bearers young and old.

Bus crashes into ditch A coach carrying overseas tourists has crashed into a ditch on State Highway 27 in the Hauraki Plains.

Police said the bus was carrying 15 passengers when the accident happened north of Patetonga yesterday. One woman suffered a minor shoulder or rib injury.

People travelling along the Waikato highway reported seeing dazed passengers standing on the roadside waiting for help.

Four buses burnt Four buses were damaged by fire at a Wellington bus depot yesterday. Fire Service shift manager Jan Wills said firefighters were called to Go Wellington Kilbirnie’s terminal in Onepu Road at 2.10am to find four buses on fire.

One passenger bus was well ablaze when the first crew arrived at the scene, she said. Three more buses were discovered burning at the Kilbirnie bus workshops and bus sheds.

Harvest under way at last

The ryegrass harvest is under way on Ian Mackenzie’s farm at Eiffelton.

Every combine harvester in Mid Canterbury is hard at work making the most of the hot weather to get crops in this week.

While the recent rain was a blessing for some, many farmers have been watching the weather forecast looking for an opportu-

nity to get back into the harvest – especially those who had seed crops on the ground.

New Zealand Grain and Seed Trade Association manager Thomas Chin said the cold spring had delayed crop development, in some cases up to two weeks. As a result those crops were only becoming fit for harvest now.

“Peas and grass seed are a good eight to 10 days behind schedule, but everyone will be making up for lost time now,” he said.

Early reports are indicating good average yields in grass seed and winter cereal crops, much on a par with last year, Mr Chin said.

inroads into their crops on Tuesday, starting with a plantain seed crop mowed three weeks earlier.

Other than presenting “a bit of a challenge” for the harvester to pick up, the crop had held up well.

“That’s about how long plantain usually sits there so it was okay,” Mrs Mackenzie said.

While a change in the weather is forecast for the long weekend, arable farmers are hoping it stays dry, at least until the end of the month.

Social Development Minister’s office firebombed An attempt to firebomb Social Development Minister Anne Tolley’s office to protest the TPP is likely to result in arrests, she says.

Early yesterday morning a hole was smashed in reinforced glass at the front of her Whakatane office and two Molotov cocktails thrown inside.

The tiled floor in the office prevented fire taking hold but the

building has suffered extensive smoke damage. Graffiti was also scrawled on the wall outside.

Police were alerted to the damage just after 6am, and Ms Tolley visited the office with staff. She said the concerted attack meant the culprits were in the area for some time.

“Police are still here gathering evidence ... they have got quite a lot of evidence ... they are check-

ing things like CCTV. They seem quite hopeful that they might get some good leads.

“We were saved really by a tiled foyer area ... there was nothing to catch alight.

“It is pretty disturbing, and when the police tell you it was a very determined attack, it does shake you up a bit.”

The graffiti said: “F*** TPPA & John Key”, but the spelling of

the Prime Minister’s name was incorrect.

The attack comes amid high tensions for the Government over the signing of the TPP and Waitangi protests.

National ministers Gerry Brownlee and Nikki Kaye have also had their offices attacked by those opposed to the TPP. There was a peaceful anti-TPP protest in Whakatane on Thurs-

day. Ms Tolley, who has four offices in the region, said some of those protesters had been in touch to voice their disgust at the attack.

“No one condones this sort of violence.

“One of the local kaumatua has come in and blessed the office ... communities do not like those sorts of violent and extreme acti ons.”

Warriors star Shaun Johnson has finally admitted what we’ve all suspected for some time – he and Silver Fern Kayla Cullen are an item.

The sporting couple have long raised eyebrows with their various social media posts about each other, but have always previously refused to comment on the nature of their relationship.

Even when snapped cuddling at a Six60 concert last month, Cullen would only tell media “We’re great friends and enjoy spending time together like all friends do. I’ve got nothing more to say.”

But Johnson had something to say about Cullen yesterday during a radio interview.

When asked by Mai FM’s Nickson, Nate and Lily who he was sharing a bed with these days, Johnson came clean.

“Me and Kayla are together,” he said. “We’re just having some fun and seeing how it goes.”

And no doubt Cullen will be in the stands at Eden Park this weekend, as her beau takes to the field for the Warriors at the NRL Nines.

■ RIZALMAN IMMUNITY FIASCO

Email at the heart of the case revealed By isaac davison The single email at the heart of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ bungling of a Malaysian diplomat’s immunity case has been revealed.

In a report released yesterday, the email by a mid-ranking foreign affairs official was blamed for a crucial misunderstanding between New Zealand and Malaysian officials.

It gave the Malaysian High Commission the impression that defence attache Muhammad Rizalman bin Ismail, who had been charged with sexual offending, could return to Malaysia with diplomatic immunity.

An hour after Rizalman was charged by police with burglary and assault to commit rape on May 10, 2014, an official in MFAT’s Protocol Division told Malaysian officials that he was due to appear in court on May 30.

The official’s email said: “If he were to complete his posting prior to 30 May and return to Malaysia with his family, that would be the end of the matter”.

Rizalman returned to Malaysia on May 22, against the wishes of the Government, police and his victim, Tania Billingsley.

The report’s author, John Whitehead, said he accepted the MFAT official’s assurance that she was not intending to suggest that the New Zealand Government was seeking anything other than a waiver of immunity.

“However, on the basis of a straightforward reading, the email does not clearly explain that ‘the matter’ relates only to the court fixture and not the incident as a whole, as the protocol officer stated was her intention.

“I consider, therefore, that inadvertently the email provided scope for the Malaysian authorities to misunderstand the intent, as subsequently proved to be the

Muhammad Rizalman bin Ismail case.” The issue was made worse by the fact that the email was not distributed to other ministry staff, and therefore they were unaware of the official’s comments.

Attached to the official’s email was a formal note, which included the ministry’s official position that it wanted immunity to be waived.

The protocol officer who sent the email resigned from MFAT last year, but has picked up another government job.

In his report, Mr Whitehead said there was “definite evidence” that the protocol officer “clearly regarded the incident itself as a very serious matter”.

He said the staff member had a history of “zero tolerance for even minor misdemeanours by foreign diplomats, let alone for crimes at the more serious end”.

At the time of the incident, Prime Minister John Key criticised the MFAT official.

“If that person doesn’t have clarity about that position then they need to think very strongly about whether they’re in the right job,” he said.

Hampstead School will now be able to prove how sun smart they are with new hats for all students and a trophy.

Mid Canterbury Cancer Society health promoter Mandy Casey visited the school yesterday during assembly to present a tro-

phy which will be given out each week to the class deemed the most sun smart.

Mrs Casey had organised hats to be donated by a local business to all students with the school’s logo on to help keep them safe in terms 1 and 4.

Principal Peter Melrose said it has been great to work with Mrs

Casey to give the students an opportunity to “hat up”, look smart and be safe.

Tubes of sunscreen were also given out to each student.

During assembly Mr Melrose presented a $65 cheque to the Cancer Society which had been raised by a student selling loom bands last year.

Crash victim’s mother’s wailing echoes through court

By RoB Kidd A mother’s uncontrollable wailing for the loss of her daughter echoed through Pukekohe District Court yesterday.

Ten months ago, Te-Tauvira Tearii crashed head-on into a car driven by 23-year-old Huan Na. Na was killed, as was her friend, Zhuangya Xu. Zhentai Qi was severely injured but survived.

Yesterday Tearii was sentenced to 250 hours’ community work, three months’ community detention and was disqualified from driving for a year.

Twenty members of the defendant’s family sat in silence as Judge Gregory Hikaka passed sentence, as did a dozen relations of the victims.

But moments later, Ms Na’s mother, Meng Gen, could not contain her grief and broke down as others tried to console her.

“It is not fair. This is not fair,” she shouted in Mandarin.

A serious crash unit report said Tearii crossed the centre line of Karaka Road in rural South Auckland for 22m, hitting the yellow Toyota in the middle of its lane.

Driving at 100km/h, his lawyer Surendra Bennett said, would

have seen him in the opposing lane for about 0.82 seconds.

“It can be considered a moment; a moment my client will regret for a long time,” she said.

Police prosecutor Geoffrey Bardsley said there were only two explanations for the lapse.

Either Tearii fell asleep or that he was so distracted by something that he did not notice he was heading into oncoming traffic.

Whatever the reason, Judge Hikaka said his culpability was “serious to very serious”.

He received documents from the victims’ families from a Bei-

jing-based lawyer who said the equivalent crime committed in China would see an offender jailed for up to five years and ordered to pay all relevant compensation.

But the judge went into detail explaining to the family how New Zealand law differed.

The two counts of careless driving causing death and one of careless driving causing injury, to which Tearii pleaded guilty, carry a maximum jail term of three months.

Judge Hikaka awarded $1000 reparation to the family of each victim but acknowledged they

could reject the cash if they deemed it “insulting”.

Ms Gen said the loss of her daughter had stripped her life of meaning.

“It’s the end of my own dream, and the happiness of the whole family,” she said.

Ms Na, an architecture student, was a keen photographer and came to New Zealand to find inspiration to fuel her design.

She and her friends were in the country on working visas.

In a statement, Tearii’s family said he was “extremely distraught” by what had happened.

Social isolation and the elderly, The social isolation of New Zealand’s elderly is a topic that pops up time and time again in the media.

The Guardian’s Caitlin Porter decided to take a closer look at social isolation in Mid Canterbury, chatting to organisations, volunteers and the elderly.

S

ocial isolation or a lack of social interaction, contact or communication is a problem.

Not just internationally, or even in remote areas of New Zealand.

It’s a problem here.

Age Concern Canterbury chief executive Simon Templeton said about 10 per cent of New Zealand’s older population were either severely or “very severely” lonely.

In Mid Canterbury he estimates there were around 400 or so lonely, isolated elderly people back in 2013, but expects this figure would have increased further in the past three years.

Not only is Mid Canterbury’s ageing population to blame, so is a change in lifestyle.

“We no longer live in villages and family can be spread across the country or the globe,” Mr Templeton explained. “And the earthquakes have also had an impact as people have moved away from their communities.”

While social isolation was prevalent in Mid Canterbury, Mr Templeton said Age Concern found people in rural areas were, in fact, very good at taking care of their own.

The most important thing when it came to managing loneliness in any area was to provide individualised support.

Ashburton is lucky in the fact it has multiple organisations and services who aim to minimise so-

cial isolation, but the hard part is getting people along to the events organised.

One of these services is Home Share. Whether you want to gather around a dinner table for a hearty meal, watch a movie or just have a cuppa and a chat, Home Share covers it all.

Home Share started in Ashburton 10 years ago and since then has spread to communities all over New Zealand.

Designed to minimise social isolation for the elderly, the service is co-ordinated by Dianne Smith.

Contractors opt to have up to four of Mid Canterbury’s elderly come to their house once a week for a good meal and a natter.

Mrs Smith said the feedback she received from the service is inherently positive.

However, while the service was a necessity, Mrs Smith said it could be hard to get new clients interested.

Currently the service has three vacancies, one in Rakaia and two in town.

“It can be hard for people to go,” she said.

“Some people are just not ready.”

Park Street Day Care co-ordinator Sue Hopkins agreed that social isolation was a problem all over the country, including in Mid Canterbury, and combating the issue was important.

The centre offers a range of

services for the elderly who are referred to Mrs Hopkins by their GP. The main focus of Park Street was socialisation and there are many activities for attendees to enjoy, including knitting, in-house entertainment, guest speakers and outings.

Mrs Hopkins said some people attend Park Street up to five days a week, while others pop in now and again. However, numbers remain strong and there are at least 20 people who turn up for the activities, as well as a hot meal, each day.

Over the years numbers have increased, but that was most likely due to Mid Canterbury’s ageing population.

A similar service, operated by Age Concern, is the 206 Club – a group for “the young at heart” who want to meet new people, socialise and take part in various activities.

Operated by Mary Harrison, the programme runs three days a week from the Seniors Centre and caters to an average of 56 people.

“Older people have lives too and I think people forget that.”

However, some people do have an issue with finding the confidence to come.

“But once people are here we have very few that don’t settle.”

For people less mobile, another way to fend off loneliness is with a regular yarn on the telephone.

Caring Callers is a service provided by St John and, while active

in Mid Canterbury, it is not highly publicised.

According to figures provided

by South Island community care manager Pam Hall, there are currently seven callers, one team leader and 10 clients who are phoned on a regular basis in Mid Canterbury.

Because the best client/caller fit is needed, often callers are matched to people from different areas which is why there are more clients than callers, she said.

A highly confidential service, Caring Callers can be tailored to individuals.

St John Ashburton area executive officer Elaine Vallender said some people prefer to be called once or twice a week for a longer period of time, while others would rather shorter calls each day.

A worthwhile service, Mrs Vallender said it did help to combat social isolation.

“Social isolation is probably the biggest killer for older people.”

St John’s health shuttle also helps to bring people together.

The shuttle operates daily, transporting people with healthrelated appointments to and from Christchurch Hospital.

The social element is also important, Mrs Vallender said often if people have had their appointments early they will catch up for a coffee or even head out to Sumner for a walk on the beach and ice cream.

o gauge what it was like to live alone Caitlin talked to three of Ashburton’s elderly.

Betty Beck Living on her own for “20-odd years” Betty Beck doesn’t see herself as “lonely”.

Not only does she enjoy being on her own she has two lovable creatures to keep her company, Louie an eight-year-old bichon maltese and Milly, a six-year-old feline she adopted off a friend.

To keep busy Betty volunteers at Age Concern and is also a keen bowler and golf croquet player.

Both sports have a great social aspect, she said.

When she was working Betty said it was much easier to combat the loneliness, but as she moved into retirement she needed to be more proactive about keeping busy.

After downsizing to a smaller home, Betty found herself surrounded by friendly neighbours.

Lucky that she is able to drive, Betty said it would be much trickier if she was not mobile.

With several friends in the same situation and family on hand, Betty has plenty to keep herself occupied.

She also keeps in touch with family in Australia and Ireland via texting, but isn’t quite ready yet to dive into the social media realm.

Helen Richards

Retired butcher and bachelor Colin Brawley has lived on his own for over 40 years, but is another person who does not define himself as “lonely”.

To bide his time and fill in his days 83-year-old Colin attends the 206 Club and enjoys buzzing around town on his mobility scooter.

A lover of the retirement lifestyle, he also has a computer and television and said he would be interested in doing something similar to Home Share. A nephew who lives locally also stops in now and then and his neighbours are also pretty alright, he said.

206 Club regular Helen Richards has lived alone for more than 20 years and said not only does she enjoy the company, she is also a fan of the delicious food.

A volunteer herself, Helen spends one day every few weeks helping to run the club.

Helen is a keen gardener, but is also a whiz inside the house too, whipping up batches of baking any chance she gets.

While she chooses to stay in at night, Helen is mobile and gets about visiting friends and family during the day.

My job? I’m an artist Former Mount Hutt College head girl Rachael Dewhirst is back in Mid Canterbury and earning her living as an artist. Susan Sandys reports.

“T

hat seems like a lifetime ago,” says 24-year-old Rachael Dewhirst, recalling the year she was head girl at Mount Hutt College.

It was in fact just eight years ago, in 2008, but in the time since Rachael has completed a fine arts degree with honours at the University of Canterbury, featured in solo exhibitions, sold many a work and travelled extensively.

Rachael does not pretend that choosing art as a career has been an easy ride, but it is one that has worked out for her.

She said she had been lucky to have parents who believed in her dreams to become an artist.

“I know at uni, there were people in the halls whose parents would not have supported them to do anything in the arts, people whose parents would prefer them to do something more practical,” she said.

“That’s not stupid, but if it’s not for you, there’s no reason why you can’t try something different. My parents never pushed me into doing anything that I wasn’t passionate about.”

She herself had received negative comments on her career choice, but said most people thought it was “awesome” that she was following what she wanted to do. And while at school she had had a “wonderful art teacher”, and was encouraged to pursue the arts.

“I have been fortunate through university as well to have inspiring lecturers which impacted [on] me hugely.”

Rachael is back home in Mid Canterbury using her parents’ garage as a studio.

“It’s perfect, I’m lucky to have the space. In return I keep the home well decorated,” Rachael said.

She has recently been to Wellington for the launch of her solo exhibition Bon appetit! at Bowen Galleries. She has also exhibited in Auckland and Christchurch, and her street art became well known in Christchurch throughout her time at university.

Rachael completed her fine arts degree with honours in 2013, and has work in the collections of the James Wallace Trust and the University of Canterbury.

Studying for five years gave Rachael itchy feet and she has managed to combine work and travel ever since, although her painting is what she earns the bulk of her income from, with her

works selling for up to $4000. She also picks up other work when it suits her and has worked as an au pair overseas and is working parttime in Ashburton.

Her travels also enriched her art, as she is inspired by her surroundings and the work of other artists.

She has travelled to the United Kingdom, Malta, Spain and Ber-

lin, and her current Bon appetit! series is a reflection of her journey in France, where she learned to speak conversational French.

Rachael describes her work as hovering between abstract and figurative, with work from the series taking a more figurative approach, “integrating forms from markets, villages and new landscape”.

Recognition of modernist artists such as Matisse, Hodgkins and Stellar were present, coupled with new references to more surrealist tendencies seen in the bizarre placement of food within the landscape.

In the work, In Croissant la plage, for instance, glazed croissants march across the canvas

and stacked baguettes form the frame of a pier.

Rachael’s goals were to continue painting, travelling and, ideally, exhibiting overseas at some point.

“I love painting and I’m really lucky to be able to do what I’m passionate about,” she said.

Boost for palliative care team Ashburton’s Palliative Care Trust has benefited from the kindness of the people of Mid Canterbury.

The group was presented with a cheque for $1100 with the money raised from the Altrusa International Remembrance Tree.

Situated in the Ashburton Arcade for the month of December, the tree gave people a chance to remember loved ones by writing a message on a star.

Remembrance tree convener Elaine Ford said the group was fearful donations would not be on par with other years due to a lack of people out and about but generosity prevailed.

Hampstead School are hoping to get a new, exciting piece of playground equipment this year.

The school is working hard to raise funds for a 5.1 metre Midi Birds Nest Tree, which is a climbing structure with baskets suspended at different heights.

Principal Peter Melrose said the climbing frame will be a great addition to their already varied playground.

“We work hard to provide a range of equipment within our playground.

“We’re trying to make it a hub

for the community and provide experiences for our students.

This new structure will provide height and climbing opportunities, he said.

“Each piece of equipment is designed to offer a different challenge.”

To raise money for the $30,000 fixture the school is part of The Warehouse’s token programme and the PTA has been running various fundraising activities including sausage sizzles.

They hope to be able to have raised enough money to have the Midi Birds Nest Tree in six months’ time.

Ashburton people planning to use the main entrance of Christchurch Hospital over the weekend will have to use an alternative entrance through Christchurch Women’s Hospital.

The main entrance and dropoff zone are closed until further notice because of the potential risk of further panes of glass falling from the canopy as occurred yesterday.

One pane of glass shattered and fell from the canopy without warning yesterday. No one was injured as the safety glass shattered into small pieces, rather than sharp shards.

David Meates, Canterbury DHB chief executive, said it was unknown what caused the pane of glass to shatter and fall but until the DHB could guarantee a similar incident would not happen again, Christchurch Hospital’s main entrance and covered drop-off zone area will remain closed.

“We apologise for any inconvenience but we hope to have a large container put in place over the weekend underneath the canopy so we can reopen the entrance to pedestrians as soon as possible.”

Security staff will be available over the weekend to help people find their way, he said.

Ashburton’s Mick Hooper has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Masters Hockey World Cup in Canberra next month.

Hooper was picked for the New Zealand men’s 55+ team following two successful trials.

The 55-year-old was one of 40 trialists at Auckland’s North Harbour Stadium last month before the group was cut down to 26 for a second trial in Palmerston North.

The Ashburton forward impressed selectors again and was named in the squad of 18 to don the black of New Zealand on the world stage.

Hooper said there was a high level of competition at both trials, and was unsure if he would make the final cut.

“It felt really good.

“It was worth the effort to go there and trial, then to trial again and get in, was great,” he said.

The World Cup will host 70 teams and run from March 29 to April 6, and Hooper, who can op-

erate as a striker and in midfield, will be in tip-top shape.

“I’ve been having games in Ashburton every Thursday and then practice games with my Canterbury masters team on Sundays and a game of squash a week,” he said.

The forward took up hockey as an eight-year-old, playing on grass at the domain under the watchful eye of coach Ray King, and went on to represent Ashburton for 15 years before moving on to the masters grade.

After playing in Mid Can-

terbury for almost half a century, Hooper believes that local hockey is in good health, with plenty of promising young players rising through the ranks, but insisted there’s room for all age groups.

“It’s good, there’s a lot of younger kids taking it up because the turf’s here.

“It’s exciting and good for hockey,” he said.

“But you can get in at any age, there’s plenty of opportunity to go as far as you like, you’ve just got to be keen.”

Australian selectors bow to pressure Australia have selected Usman Khawaja to replace Shaun Marsh for the second Chappell-Hadlee one day international in Wellington today.

Khawaja was a surprise omission from the opening ODI in Auckland.

Marsh contributed five in the 159-run loss.

In the other change, leg spinner Adam Zampa will make his international debut, after James Faulkner was ruled out injured.

It will be Khawaja’s first ODI appearance in three years.

His recent Big Bash League form steered the Sydney Thunder to the title.

In his last four T20 innings Khawaja made 345 runs, including two centuries and two fifties.

He averaged 115 with a strike rate of 164.

“I’m not a big believer in form, to be honest,” Khawaja said.

“This is a new challenge. Nothing I did previously has any effect on what I do tomorrow.”

What about the crowds though, with their ‘colourful’ banter?

“It seems the go here, but that’s part of the game. When we play domestically in Perth or Adelaide they can be pretty rowdy, too, but the accents here are kind of funny, so I enjoy it.”

Khawaja’s only previous New Zealand experience came during a schools carnival in Christchurch.

“We played against some school called St Andrew’s where we got bullied by some guy who was about six-foot-six. Another guy hit about 36 off four balls.

“That’s not even possible, but I think he did it. It was good fun.”

He said playing at Westpac Stadium marked a change from Eden Park.

“When guys chip it over your head for a six, it’s bizarre.”

Australia must win today’s match to keep the three-match series alive.

Usman Khawaja gets a run

A week of one-on-ones held in hushed tones, dinners on corporate credit cards and board meetings in Dubai has resulted in a partial back-down on the unpopular 2014 moves that effectively handed cricket to the Big Three.

And, as expected, New Zealand Cricket has backed the changes, a volte-face on their position in 2014 when they sided with India, England and Australia - the selfstyled Big Three - as they made a land grab for control of the ICC and the lion’s share of revenues.

A board meeting of the full member nations in Dubai agreed to implement a steering committee that will decide what the new ICC structure will look like.

In the meantime, the chairmanship of the ICC will return to an independent position and the two major committees - financial and commercial affairs, and executive committee - will also be restructured so they are not necessarily controlled by the Big Three.

Greg Barclay, NZC’s representative on the ICC, defended NZC’s apparent flip-flop.

“We weren’t that unpopular,” he said of their decision to originally back the Big Three.

“Everyone made that decision knowing that India had the influence to affect their tour programmes.

“We had to look at it from a pragmatic and commercial perspective.

“From our point of view, nothing stays as it is. There was always going to be changes.”

Submissions to the steering committee close at the end of April and the proposed new structure will be voted on at the AGM in June.

“It is politics.

“You know you’ve got to change,” Barclay said.

“There’s no point taking India on head on; it’s just not going to work. They make the money along with, to a lesser extent, England and Australia.”

South Africa Cricket, under the leadership of Haroon Lorgat, know the cost of taking on the BCCI, India’s controlling body, head on.

In 12013, a two-month inbound tour from India was truncated to a two-test tour - at an estimated to cost South Africa close to US$20 million.

In that regard, NZC’s realpolitik approach is understandable, if somewhat short of admirable.

Cricket is also unique in that it is still the international game that spins the wheel, though that might be slowly changing with the proliferation of franchisebased T20 tournaments.

For countries who don’t have monstrously lucrative domestic T20 tournaments or huge broadcast deals, the risk of international isolation is acute.

“Matt also comes back into the squad after some really strong performances throughout the summer and with Corey’s return we now have a number of seam bowling options to consider.”

The two-match series begins in Wellington next Friday, which will also represent Brendon McCullum’s world record 100th consecutive test since debut.

Crowd abuse ‘water off a duck’s back’ He’s not exactly puritanical after being involved in a series of ugly incidents but the level of abuse directed at David Warner at Eden Park on Wednesday has prompted some to question which country has the most feral fans.

Aggressive and incessant chants of “wanker”, “you f***ed up” and “kill him” were among the least vulgar phrases hurled at the Aussies in the field.

“I think, whilst it’s not overly clever some of the stuff we come out with, a lot of the time it’s in pretty good jest,” New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum told NZME. “I don’t think Davey [Warner] will worry too much about it.”

Australian bowler John Hastings told Sydney’s Daily Telegraph that it was water of a duck’s back.

“We haven’t really spoken about it,” said.

“We go over and play in WA and that can be a bad crowd as well.

“It’s part and parcel about what you do as professional sportsmen. There’s nothing we’ve spoken about.”

It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last and it happens on both sides of the Tasman.

The “Hadlee’s a wanker’’ chant really took off in 1987-88 tour there, when Richard Hadlee dominated the Australian batsmen.

Hobart was the first place where the abuse exploded with reports of virtually the whole ground taking part.

Eden Park cricket fans: Are they the worst in the world?

Southee was also on the receiving end of a stream of verbal sprays from Australian fans at the Waca last year.

There were allegations that the abuse may have been of a racial nature and ground staff and Cricket Australia launched an immediate investigation.

But an investigation into the incident has deemed it was not racist.

In Adelaide in 2002, the Beige Brigade were held back by police for an hour after the game “for our own safety” and then walked with the New Zealand fans to avoid any potential “issues” with Aussie fans.

During the one-dayer in Melbourne in the 2004/05 season, Mathew Sinclair took an incredible one-handed catch on the boundary and immediately

turned to the crowd and pointed at them after having copped plenty of abuse throughout the match.

The Aussies have certainly copped their fair share in New Zealand.

Back in 1998, Mark Waugh had golf balls thrown at him and a glass sauce bottle was hurled at Stuart Law. Seven years later at Westpac stadium Simon Katich had a beer tipped on him fielding in the outer and Matthew Hayden was spat on.

Five fans and five streakers were arrested and another 40 were ejected from Eden Park.

Glenn McGrath was also subjected to serious levels of abuse during the 2005 tour and was peppered with tennis balls, beer cups, a cigarette lighter and a half

bottle of lemonade, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The Aussies certainly have a longer history of it, even against the own team.

In 1982, 19-year-old Gary Donnison ran onto the field and hit Australian fast bowler Terry Alderman in the face.

Alderman chased Donnison before trying to tackle him and ended up with a dislocated shoulder.

Team-mates Dennis Lillee and Allan Border tripped up Donnison and pinned him to the ground until police and security arrived.

Donnison and another 25 fans were arrested, and a further 150 were ejected.

Maybe an Englishman can settle the debate.

Former England cricket captain Mike Atherton recently rated the Eden Park crowd and the Melbourne Cricket Ground, along with Sabina Park in Jamaica, as the world’s most notorious when it comes to crowd abuse.

“New Zealand is a gentle country, its people are lovely, but during a one-day international, Eden Park is transformed into a bear pit,” he said.

“Once, I found myself fielding down at third man and the abuse I received was worse than anywhere else (captains, of course, have the luxury of not fielding on the boundary, a benefit I availed myself of next time we visited).

“I also had a pint of something wet (dare not think what was in it) thrown at me.”

All eyes on T20 World Cup after surgery Mitch McClenaghan reckons his wrecked batting helmet could make an ideal mantelpiece souvenir as he sets his sights on getting back up to speed in time for next month’s world T20 cricket tournament.

His left eye remains bloodied after surgery to have two metal plates inserted in his head after being struck just above the eye by a short ball during the ODI against Pakistan in Wellington last week.

He’s had time to absorb the sobering news that the injury was close to being far more serious.

“It was very close to going into my brain,” the big fast bowler said yesterday.

“There were fragments in the sinus cavity so two plates were put in to reinforce the orbital bone and they took out a few fragments they couldn’t fix to the plates.”

McClenaghan’s memory of the moment is clear.

“As soon as I got hit, I thought ‘why didn’t I hit it?’

“Then when I was trying to get the ball out of my helmet [it had lodged between the peak and top of the grille] my conscious thought was ‘can I see?’

“The impact was above the eye and we’ve seen a few cases where people haven’t made a comeback from that.”

The 29-year-old has received encouraging medical advice, firstly that he can start light exercise in a couple of days then, with luck, be bowling in the nets in about a week.

McClenaghan knows the key moment will be how he handles the next short-pitched flier when the brain may send messages he mightn’t fancy hearing.

“When it comes to batting, the boys will tell you I’m pretty confident throwing the willow around.

“I know it’s going to be hard.

The brain works in funny ways in letting you do these things but I’m pretty confident I can overcome them.”

He was chuffed to see the quality of New Zealand’s bowling display in the 159-run beating of Australia on Wednesday.

“It was just phenomenal to see how the guys are stepping up.”

The clock is now ticking for the lively left-armer with the world T20 coming up.

More importantly, he’s come through a physical injury which could have been disastrous.

“I haven’t even looked at it yet,” he said of the bashed-in helmet, which is still sitting in his bag at Eden Park.

“It might be one of those things you put up on the mantelpiece as a constant reminder of, A: how much it hurt and, B: how lucky I am to be able to come back and play this game again.”

Bailey O’Donnell and Jessie Banks have been selected to the Cycling New Zealand Under-17 Development Programme on February 13 and 14 in Christchurch.

The pair will be under the watchful eye of under 17 junior development coach Mark Prut-

ton, who will be offering guidance in all aspects of the sport.

“It’s not just about riding, it focuses on developing the person and the rider,” said Prutton.

“We work on professionalism, riding skills as well as nutrition and team work.”

O’Donnell’s involvement in the programme will be limited by his injured wrist.

The 15-year-old fell off his long board a month ago and broke his scaphoid, but is eager to get started.

“I was really happy to be selected.

“This is my first time so I’m really looking forward to it,” said O’Donnell.

“The nutrition part of the programme will be good be-

cause I’m not really very good with that.”

At 15, the College duo will be younger than their elite agegroup counterparts, but will be intent on soaking up as much information as possible in preparation for the upcoming Track and Road National Championships to be held in Invercargill and Alexandra.

What are the rules?

Manning in elite company The last time the world saw John Elway in a Broncos uniform, he was facing the stands, both hands aloft, holding his helmet in his left hand, and his right hand clenched into a tight, celebratory fist.

He flashed that toothy smile, knowing that a few minutes later, he would be cradling his second Super Bowl trophy.

He went out on top.

No matter what happened after that – and Elway has gone on to accomplish plenty – his last meaningful moments on a football field had resulted in a victory in the biggest game of all.

“It’s a very nice thing to have,” Elway said this week, “knowing you can always look back and have a real positive thought.”

Now, Elway runs the team he used to play for.

In 2012 he signed Peyton Manning, who, at 39, is even older than Elway was when he played his last game in 1999.

And now, it’s Manning who could be taking that same walk into the sunset as Elway did.

He has a chance to win his second Super Bowl, peel off his Broncos jersey and never come back.

By the accounts of both men, the topic of Manning’s retirement has not been broached.

It’s hard to think those conversations won’t pick up steam

over the next few weeks.

Manning has already told Patriots coach Bill Belichick, in a not-so-private exchange at midfield two weeks ago, that this might be his last rodeo.

He has refused to expand on that, keeping with the theme that he’s soaking in every moment, and he’ll worry about tomorrow when tomorrow comes.

“We haven’t talked about anything past Sunday,” said Manning’s brother, Eli. “We kept it on this week, the last few weeks, but nothing past the game.”

When the game is over, Peyton will have an all-star lineup from which to glean advice.

It includes Eli, of course; their father, Archie, who spent 14 years in the NFL; their brother, Cooper, who has long been one of Peyton’s best sounding boards.

And Elway.

Chances are, Manning will be seeking what Elway sought when he went to his father, Jack, a longtime scout and personnel man, after the second Super Bowl title.

“I was fortunate to be able to talk to my dad about what he thought,” Elway said.

“Because I didn’t want it to be different than what I was seeing and what I was feeling.”

The signs of Elway’s slowdown toward the end were visible – he missed four starts in 1998 with

hamstring, rib and other injuries.

“Physically, I was breaking down a little bit,” Elway said.

But the ravages of age on him weren’t as glaring as what Manning has displayed at times this season.

His 17 interceptions before going to the sideline with a foot injury in November were hard to watch.

That he has rebounded and guided the Broncos to the Super Bowl (And yes, there was that remarkable 12-yard run against the Patriots) is a testament to his guile and smarts more than any physical prowess.

“I feel I can still move the chains,” Manning said.

“Maybe in different ways. It’s being able to adjust.”

If he leads Denver to a victory against Carolina on Monday, Manning’s ability to set aside the glow of winning the title, and to listen to candid advice, will set the framework for his decision.

His inner-circle’s ability to give it to him straight will be every bit as important for the quarterback, whose contract extends through next year.

Sacrilege I know but during last year’s Rugby World Cup I fell in love with NFL football.

A friend had alerted me to a new free-to-air TVNZ pop-up channel that was showing live NFL (National Football League) games.

There were no free-to-air RWC games at that stage so in lieu of watching the All Blacks preliminary rounds I tuned into NFL and I haven’t looked back. (The ABs did ok without me right?).

Previously the only thing I knew about gridiron was what I’d gleaned watching box sets of Friday Night Lights.

I had a rough idea of what a quarterback did (and wasn’t one of them married to Giselle?), but the other positions and the actual rules of the game (why are they stopping all the time?) remained a mystery.

But after watching a couple of games I was up with the play.

Despite the seven officiating refs, a myriad of on-screen stats, flags, playbooks and in-helmet radios - boil it down and the game is a simple one - the ball-carrying team (the offence) get four chances to advance 10 yards (just over nine metres).

The opposing team (the defence) has to stop them.

The best thing one of these guys can do - short of intercepting a pass and running in a touchdown (worth six points which you don’t actually have to touch down by the way) - is sack the quarterback.

That is pummel him into the ground with ball in hand while he’s behind the line of scrimmage.

That’s the blue line on your screen, the yellow one is the one they have to get to.

If the team with the ball doesn’t get 10 yards in four attempts (or downs) they usually kick it as far as they can down field on the fourth down (think rugby league with helmets and forward passes).

If they do get the 10 it’s first down again and the drive continues till they score a touchdown, get in range for a field goal, lose the ball or are stopped inside of the four by the defence.

Newbies note - each team is really two teams - an offence and a defence (let’s not get into special teams just yet), which are sent on the field as required.

Up to 46 players can dress out for a game and - unlike league or rugby - unlimited substitutions are allowed.

That said - only 11 players are allowed on the field at any one time.

And the truth is no sport is better suited to TV than the NFL. The game is a gladiatorial spectacle, beautiful and brutal - giving young men from (often) America’s poorest communities the chance to lay body and brain on the line for the glory of the franchise and millions of dollars.

Each season over 17 million fans pour through the mostly franchise-owned stadium gates, and that’s not even getting into the enormous sponsorship and screening rights deals.

JT backs Johnson North Queensland Cowboys captain Johnathan Thurston believes Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson will return a better and stronger player after recovering from last year’s season-ending ankle injury.

Thurston’s body has taken a battering throughout a 268-game 15-year career, but the 32-yearold veteran halfback has learned to overcome the physical and psychological trauma after suffering serious knocks and says those experiences toughened him up in both body and mind.

After six months on the sidelines, Johnson will make his much anticipated playing return when he captains the Warriors at this weekend’s Downer NRL Auckland Nines, and despite the expected nerves surrounding his comeback, Thurston is confident he’ll come back better than before.

“It (injuries) tests you mentally as well as physically,” said Thurston.

“He’ll be better for it during the season obviously once he’s had a few runs under his belt.

“There’s always that little voice inside your head that takes you back to that injury but you’ve just got to

push past it and no doubt he will.

“He looks like a really professional kid and does work really hard and I’m sure he’ll be back bigger than ever.”

With concerns over player burnout and injury, Thurston has sat out the last two Nines and his involvement this year will be limited to tomorrow’s charity goal-kicking showdown against league immortal Andrew Johns, superboot Darryl Halli-

gan and former All Blacks and Blues great Carlos Spencer.

The jury is out on whether the Warriors are wise in fielding Johnson in the short-form preseason competition, but despite wrapping himself in cotton wool, Thurston insists the Nines is worthy of every club’s full attention.

“Injuries are a part of the game so some people do get injured at these types of events.

“But it’s a great spectacle for fans and I know the boys love playing in it that’s for sure,” he said.

“It would have been nice (to play) but I’ve just got to prepare for the World Club Challenge (against UK Super League champions Leeds), which we leave for next week.

“But we’ve fielded a pretty strong side so we’ve done well.

“We won it the first year (2014) and then we made the quarterfinals last year.

“There’s a fair few of our boys from the grand final that are playing in the Nines so it should be fun.”

Thurston acknowledged expectations are high that the Warriors will perform this season, after recruiting marquee signings Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Issac Luke, but he believes Johnson’s game will flourish further thanks to the arrival of tough and reliable former Cronulla No7 Jeff Robson. “(Robson will add) a lot of stability, he just gets the job done,” he said.

“He’ll take a lot of pressure off Shaun.

“He’s had so much pressure on him with that team and obviously having Roger and Issac Luke that they’ve recruited that will take so much pressure off Johnson.

“He’ll be able to just play his natural game and that’s what they need.

“They need the rest of the boys to do their job so he can do his.

“They’re going to be a very strong side.”

Tait, Cockburn break Otago Country record

They may not have known it at the time, but Matt Tait and Ryan Cockburn broke Mid Canterbury’s Otago Country partnership record with 165 during last weekend’s first innings victory at Molyneux Park.

The two sides first met in 1957, when Otago Country played under the banner of Central Otago.

Tait and Cockburn’s sixth wicket partnership surpassed the fixture’s

previous record of 104, which was set at Molyneux Park in 2012, and fell just five runs short of the overall sixth wicket partnership record set by Jason Overend and Corey Hastie against West Coast in 2005.

Tait was in inspirational form, posting 153 while being superbly supported by Cockburn (103 not out), but neither man will be in action in week two of the Muirhead Rosebowl today.

Twenty two-year-old Tait is in the capital to watch the Black Caps

take on Australia at the Cake Tin, while Cockburn’s Lauriston have the bye.

“I was pretty pleased, it’s always good to get runs for Mid Canterbury and hopefully the (Allenton) boys get a win,” said Tait.

Cockburn said he was pleased to have secured a small place in Mid Canterbury’s cricketing history.

“It’s good to have, you don’t really think about it at the time, but it’s good to be part of the history book,” he said.

ver a number of articles we will cover the basics of investing and how to get started. The articles will include types of investments to consider, asset classes, ways to invest, principal risks of investing and creating a portfolio of investments.

Today we are covering things to consider before getting started in investing.

Investment is a lifelong journey — poor decisions at the start may cause disappointment.

Before jumping in, carefully consider your options. You are not alone in this journey— help is available from many sources.

Make sure you talk to friends, family and industry professionals before making any investment decisions.

Today’s investor faces many choices. Investments can be in shares, bonds, property, bank deposits, domestic or international assets, directly invested or via managed funds. Investors should also consider superannuation. A further complication is the question of leverage and derivatives.

Before making any investment it is best that you undertake a thorough enough review and analysis of your goals and circumstances. Take some time to think about and note down the following:

Investment goals: What goals do you have? Why do you want to invest? Are you saving for retirement, do you want to be mortgage free, have you planned an international holiday, or are you saving for your child’s education or to pass on to your heirs?

Income needs: Given these goals, what are your estimated current and future income needs?

You need to consider your age and also your dependents’ ages.

How long do you plan to be working? What other things need to be considered: mortgage payments, annual holiday, a new car?

Your income needs will be the prime input into an investment strategy makeup.

Timeframe: Over what timeframe are your goals planned?

When do you need to withdraw money? Do you need a regular income flow over a set timeframe or do you need a lump sum on a specific date? Generally, longer term investments are able to ride

out the usual fluctuations in market and investment values.

Risk appetite: Honestly review your appetite for risk—the ‘sleep at night’ factor. Very few investments are guaranteed. Would you be prepared to lose a large proportion of the funds invested?

Could you lose some if you knew a percentage was guaranteed? Do you need instant access to your investments?

Investment structures: Is the investment personal or for a family trust? Do you wish to take a hands-on approach or would you like someone else to manage the process for you? Do you have any existing investments, for example an employee KiwiSaver scheme?

These are just some of the issues to consider before investing.

Once this analysis process is complete, you will need to consider what types of investment best suit your circumstances.

Auckland has been ranked 20th in a survey of cities on the move by global commercial real estate firm JLL. It’s the first time the City of Sails has landed in the top 20 since JLL published the City Momentum Index for the first time two years ago.

The index tracks the speed of change of a city’s economy and commercial real estate market and covers 120 established and emerging business hubs around the world.

It identifies cities adapting fastest to technological and infrastructural change, according to a report attached to the index.

“The current cycle of globalisation, urbanisation and technological advancement is leading to a shake-up of the global urban hierarchy and creating sweeping changes to the geography of commercial real estate opportunity. In this new era of city competition, success is no longer purely about size or inherited attributes, but revolves around innovation, liveability and a city’s ability to transform and adapt to a constantly changing socio-economic landscape.”

shburton’s Work and Income tragedy is now almost 18 months distant, but it is still very much alive in the hearts and minds of the people of Ashburton.

And yesterday, it was very clear that that tragedy is still alive in the minds of the Ministry of Social Development as well. A threat to staff at a Christchurch office saw MSD take immediate action, locking down all of its Canterbury offices until the issue was resolved. The world of Work and Income (Winz) staff around New Zealand changed that day. It was a day that started out like any other but that within a few hours ended up with two people dead and another injured. The tragedy rocked New Zealand and plunged MSD staff into a work environment where security became the number one priority.

For the Winz-using public, that also meant change. No longer could they make an appointment – or not – and walk into their nearest office. Security guards and locked doors became the new norm.

Staff in those offices work with a wide range of people, but many of those they deal with daily are people for whom life has been anything but easy. Finding affordable accommodation, paying bills and simply getting by, for many is a struggle. They rely on government support just to get by.

The ride through the Winz system is not always easy and not everyone is happy with or grateful for the help they receive.

Frustration levels are often high and while staff do their absolute best to ensure everyone gets the level of assistance they need, the end result is not always what the client wants.

For some frustration boils over into anger and violence. The threat of this is something Winz staff live with daily.

They don’t design the system but as the front-liners they’re the people the disenfranchised see, they’re the ones they blame, the ones who are at risk.

There’s nothing simple, nothing straightforward about dealings with Winz. It’s the system we’ve got, but you have to ask if there’s a better way of providing the people who need it with the help they need.

his is about cricket, so let’s start with tennis. Recently in the Australian Open, American tennis player Jack Sock lost to Aussie hero Leyton Hewitt.

During that match, Sock had a better angle on a Hewitt serve that was called out, so the American suggested Hewitt, this being his final Aussie Open, challenge the call because it was in.

Hewitt, somewhat in disbelief, challenged and Hawkeye confirmed what Sock knew - the ball was in.

In a few months, Brendon McCullum will give the annual Spirit of Cricket speech at Lord’s for the MCC Cowdrey Lecture which was inaugurated in 2001 in memory of the late Lord Cowdrey of Tonbridge.

The “spirit” in which cricket is played is always up for debate when Australia are involved and the shock Sock call is relevant to the Eden Park ODI on Wednesday night.

Imagine the outpouring of angst and praise if McCullum had suggested to David Warner, “Mate, you should check that lbw decision because you were jumping and it hit you high up on the pad ...”

George Bailey, who was at the non-striker’s end, told an Australian radio station yesterday he tried to convince the most dangerous, destructive and confident batsman in the team to challenge but Warner walked off. The rest is history.

The point is - there’s being helpful and then there’s scuppering your team’s chances of winning a series against a fierce rival.

Warner was the key wicket.

What we don’t need is to show them too many favours. Let us watch them melt down. Let us savour the victory.

During McCullum’s career, there have been times when the Black Caps have been caught out in the spirit of the game.

There were over-exuberant celebration scenes in England on the balcony after a tense finish over the hosts.

There was also the stumping of Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan who had left his crease to congratulate Kumar Sangakkara on a century, a decision which skipper Stephen Fleming defended to the nth degree, insisting the ball wasn’t dead.

The Black Caps aren’t perfect but the way they now play feels

like a direct result of the team finding themselves on the right or wrong side of popular opinion.

They’ve learned from their mistakes, and maybe the Aussies should, too.

There is no overt sledging from New Zealand (Virat Kohli is a master at winding up the Aus-

This is good news because it follows the New Zealand Government decision to increase the number of refugees who can be hosted and sheltered in the “land of the long white cloud,” particularly from Syria, where there has been violence and a lot of people have lost their lives and families have been separated.

With New Zealand’s rich Christian heritage, welcoming strangers is a response to the teachings of Christian faith. Our Lord Jesus Christ experienced what it means to be a refugee and teaches us to take care of one

another, especially the “least of these”.

Welcoming refugees in our communities is not just an expression of our Christian heritage; it is also an expression of what it means to be human. In Southern Africa, (Where I come from) we use the term “Ubuntu” which is the essence of being human.

We can’t exist as human beings in isolation and our interconnectedness calls for us to be hospitable and generous towards

the “least of these”.

As a follower of Jesus Christ and a minister of the church (St David’s in Allenton), it is my prayer that the community of Ashburton will participate in being hospitable to refugees when we are called upon. I am positive that Ashburton will continue to be a welcoming place as it has been.

I wish you a fruitful year.

World pledges $10b for Syria World leaders pledged more than $10 billion yesterday to help fund schools, shelter and jobs for refugees from Syria’s civil war, money that British Prime Minister David Cameron said “will save lives, will give hope, will give people the chance of a future”.

But participants at the aid conference in London acknowledged that prospects for ending the conflict have rarely been worse: Peace talks are suspended, fighting is intensifying, Russia and the West are at odds, and millions of Syrians are suffering from bombardment, homelessness and hunger.

“The situation in Syria is as close to hell as we are likely to find on this Earth,” said United Nations Secretary-General Ban Kimoon.

US Secretary of State John Kerry was no more upbeat.

“After almost five years of fighting, it’s pretty incredible that as we come here in London in 2016, the situation on the ground is actually worse,” he said.

The one-day meeting, held under tight security at a conference centre near Parliament, aspired to bring new urgency to the effort to help the 4.6 million Syrians who have sought refuge in neighbouring countries including Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. Another 6 million people or more are displaced within Syria, and a quarter of a million have been killed.

Previous calls for international donations have come up short, and the fiveyear war has driven a chaotic exodus of hundreds of thousands of desperate refugees to Europe. Yesterday’s pledges are intended to slow that migration, by creating school places and secure jobs for Syr-

ian refugees in the Middle East, and economic support for the overburdened host nations.

Cameron said participants had pledged almost $6 billion for 2016, and another $5 billion by 2020.

The British leader called the conference — hosted by Britain, Germany, Norway, Kuwait and the UN — “a real break-

through, not just in terms of money but in terms of how we handle these refugee crises.”

The tally falls short of the $9 billion the UN and regional countries said was needed for 2016 alone, but it was a significant improvement on half-hearted previous fundraising efforts. Last year’s conference, in Kuwait, raised just half its $7 billion target, forcing cuts to programmes such as refugee food aid.

Aid groups welcomed the money, but slammed the international community for allowing the war to go on. Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, said the world had shown a “lack of political action and ambition to resolve the crisis”.

“Humanitarian aid is always just a quick fix, and never enough,” he said.

Cameron told reporters that the international community would stand with Syrians for “as long as it takes to secure peace,” acknowledging that the goals of a cease-fire followed by a transitional government remained distant.

Yesterday’s meeting opened hours after the latest UN-led bid to start peace talks in Geneva was suspended for three weeks — a sign of major difficulties.

Kerry blamed Syria’s government and Russia for the peace talks stalling. He said he and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had spoken by phone Thursday and agreed to continue discussing “how to implement the cease-fire”. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said the two had also agreed to try to ensure the pause in the talks was as short as possible.

Neither statement mentioned any concrete measures.

No plans to cancel Rio games Brazil’s sports minister said yesterday that a cancellation of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics because of the outbreak of the Zika virus “is not in discussion”.

Sports Minister George Hilton issued a statement saying he “lamented material and opinions in the press” speculating that South America’s first games might be called off.

“The Brazilian government is fully committed to ensure that the 2016 Rio games take place in an atmosphere of security and tranquility,” Hilton wrote.

Brazil is the epicentre of an outbreak of the mosquito-borne Zika virus, which the World Health Organisation has called “an extraordinary event and public health threat”.

Health officials are investigating whether there is a link between Zika infections in pregnant women and a rare birth defect.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said this week he was “very confident” the games would take place. And Rio organisers have repeatedly said there is no talk of calling off the games.

Hilton said the WHO had not banned travel because of Zika, though pregnant women have been advised not to travel to Zika areas.

Hilton also noted the cooler, drier Brazilian weather in the South American winter when the games open August 5 will drive down the mosquito count.

Prince coming Down Under Prince is coming to Australia and New Zealand. Very few details have been released about the music star’s tour except for the title, which implies it will be an intimate solo concert series. Entitled the Piano & A Microphone tour, Prince’s show could be coming Down Under as soon as this month according to a statement released by promoters. Details are expected to be announced soon. Prince dropped his 39th studio album in December called Hit n Run Phase Two with no forewarning. The artist last came to Australia on an arena tour in 2012, playing Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
