Drink-driving and binge-drinking by young people are the biggest areas of concern for the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (Acads).

General manager Chris Clark said alcohol use, followed by cannabis and methamphetamine use, were the main issues for the

470 people who used their services in the 12 months to the end of July this year.

A similar number of people needed help in the previous year. “Alcohol by far is still the biggest concern, especially around harm, but we only see the tip of the iceberg. The community sees a lot of harm that does not get to our books.�

Clark said the largest age-group seeking help was in the 21-30 years, and the next largest group people aged 20 and under.

Her comments follow the release of a Government report this week into mental health and addiction to alcohol and other drugs.

The report has 40 recommendations, including the setting up of a Mental Health and Wellbeing

Commission, reform of the Mental Health Act, to begin considering illegal drug use a health and social issue and to set a target of reducing suicide rates by 20 per cent by 2030.

Clark said Mid Canterbury was uniquely served by Acads, which was a non-government service funded by the Canterbury District Health Board, Ministry of Health

and community grants. It was set up in 1988 by locals concerned about the lack of drug and alcohol services in the district; it now has a staff of nine.

She said people needing help did not have to travel out of town.

Strong feedback on state highway safety changes

Hundreds turned out to open days, hundreds more are choosing to make comments online and the message that’s emerging loud and clear is that something must be done to improve the safety of State Highway One between Selwyn and Ashburton.

There’s a huge gap, however, between what road users want and what is currently on the drawing board, says New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) manager system management central South Island, Pete Connors.

Last month the agency unveiled a proposal that included a raft of safety measures for the highway.

Among those were a flexible central barrier, turning bays and the closure of some side road access.

Open days for the public to view the proposals, ask questions and make comments were held in Dunsandel, Rakaia and Ashburton while online feedback is on-going.

There are some clear messages emerging, with a four-lane highway topping the list, but that, Connors said is not part of the interim safety plan for the stretch of highway from the Selwyn River to Ashburton.

“Eventually this will happen but it’s not on the radar now.

We’re looking at an interim measure until we get there,” he said.

been considered yet for physical work, Connors said.

Many of those responding say anything other than a four lane highway would not achieve the safety improvements required.

While the flexible median barrier was designed to prevent head on crashes, it would remove any overtaking options outside passing lanes and that would effectively create log jams of vehicles behind slow moving traffic, many responders said.

“The entire state highway from Ashburton to Christchurch should be four lanes (two in each direction) including any bridges.

“Only then would I install median barriers. Otherwise all your median barriers are going to achieve, apart from minimising the risk of accident from head-on collisions, is increase congestion and create some very frustrated motorists. Imagine not being able to pass a camper van or heavy farm equipment, you’re stuck

there until you get to a passing lane …” one responder said.

If a four lane highway was not an option and a central barrier was erected, there would need to be many more – and longer – passing lanes created, many said.

Heavy traffic volumes and a large number of slower vehicles and agricultural vehicles meant there were few passing opportunities outside passing lanes, but once a central barrier was erected, any opportunities would go

and that would put extra pressure on passing lanes, they said.

“State Highway One is used daily, by slow moving agricultural vehicles. The proposed medium barriers will cause huge delays to traffic, as they will not be able to overtake for many kilometres, thus causing driver frustration . . . median barrier would double the death rate because the time you follow three trucks to passing lanes impatient drivers will take risks. This will make the passing lanes a real racetrack. People pull out to pass now with nowhere to get back in. This will make it worse.”

Other submitters were concerned that, without an efficient connection to Christchurch for workers commuting both ways, and family travel etc, Ashburton would become a less attractive place to live or work.

There were suggestions that four-laning could start at Ashburton and progressively move towards Fairton and then Rakaia.

All comments received online and at open days would be considered and then transport experts would prepare a draft plan that would be taken back to affected communities, Connors said.

People needed to accept that a four-lane highway would not be part of that plan, he said.

“It will happen but it’s not on the horizon we’re looking at. The physical work for this is not yet funded and it will be in there with a lot of demand on funding, but the job is on the move.”

Other rural areas around the country say access to services is a major problem.

The Government report also recommends more regulation around the supply and sale of alcohol, which could include raising the legal drinking age to 20.

Clark said Acads worked with local police, local bars and res-

taurants as part of a commitment to the Ashburton Alcohol Accord, to promote safe and responsible practices.

There was ongoing work to do around drink driving and binge drinking by young people.

“It is not about teaching responsible drinking. The longer you can delay people starting to

drink, the better off for them it will be in terms of brain development.”

Research pointed to brains developing until the age of 25, she said.

“Binge drinking is a cause for concern. That is when things can happen.”

Acads runs a programme for re-

cidivist drink drivers that she says can help turn around some entrenched rural attitudes towards drinking and driving.

“Parents should not stop asking their young people how they are going to get home if they have been drinking. Cars don’t know their own way home, they have to be driven.”

Electricity loading control urged

Mid Canterbury farmers asked to reduce irrigation on weekdays to lower electricity transmission costs in the future have been helped by a wet November.

EA Networks had asked irrigators to voluntarily manage their electricity load by irrigating at night or at the weekend, when they could; the local lines company is trying to reduce the number of summer peaks which lead to higher transmission charges from Transpower.

Transpower charges are based on 100 peaks of electricity use over a 12-month period. The last 12-month measurement period recorded 75 summer peaks and 25 in winter and resulted in transmission charges jumping from $4.3 million to $14.5m.

The charges relate to building and maintaining its national grid of pylons and cables.

EA Networks commercial manager Jeremy Adamson said the $10.2m in extra charges would be

passed on to all EA Networks’ Mid Canterbury customers.

Residential line charges are estimated to rise by an average $70 while farmers who irrigate face increases of about 40 per cent ($5000 per 100kW).

The new charges will apply from April 1 next year but farmers can help reduce charges for the following year by reducing irrigation on weekdays this summer.

Adamson said the crucial periods for managing peak load were November-December and February-March. Many farmers had already indicated they didn’t need to irrigate in the next few weeks thanks to the recent wet weather.

Adamson said the increased Transpower charges would see $10.2m leave the Ashburton economy, but farmers could help reduce that, and their own electricity costs, in future years by controlling peak loads.

winter, because of irrigation – 100 summer peaks could result in transmission costs of $20m.

If all the peaks were in winter, the charge would be $4m.

EA Networks expects transmission costs will be fixed in the future but is trying to combat the current volatility by working with the farming community, for the benefit of the whole district.

Farmers would still be able to irrigate critical crops when needed, but some resilient pasture could be irrigated strategically to avoid peak times. The main electricity use comes from pumps that draw irrigation water from deep wells.

Farmers are being asked to reduce irrigation as much as possible between 8am and 8pm on weekdays, when there is also peak demand from industry in Christchurch. They could irrigate as much as possible on weekends and overnight with little risk of creating energy peaks.

EA Networks has been working with Federated Farmers on the is-

sue and did a presentation about voluntary load control to about 50 members recently. At the same time they sent a letter to all farmers on their customer base.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president Mike Salvesen said irrigation was more critical for cropping farmers but some dairy farmers irrigating pasture would be able to irrigate less at peak times on weekdays.

That could be enough to reduce the summer peaks and keep millions of dollars in the local economy, he said.

The company is looking into financial incentives for farmers who take up voluntary load control in future years.

“But it will be a great benefit to the whole district if we can get our transmission costs down. It’s money that stays in our local economy.”

He said EA Networks could look at new technology, possibly grid-scale batteries or local generation, to mitigate the issue if the national Electricity Authority did

not change the current allocation method.

His biggest concern is farmers turning to alternative energy sources, like diesel and solar, which had issues of their own.

“Many people don’t realise you have to disconnect from the grid altogether to have no line charges.

However, most still want the electricity grid as a back-up even after they have spent thousands of dollars on solar panels. People need to take care before making major investment decisions based on short-term cost increases.”

Adamson said EA Networks was a community-owned co-operative and had put a lot of time and effort into infrastructure for the benefit of the community.

“Transmission cost volatility is unwelcome, but there is a solution – either through regulatory change or by smarter management of energy demand in our region. We need to work together to solve the issue from a community perspective.”

Women helping women to get on the road

Thanks to the efforts of more than 20 Ashburton women, another 12 women are well on the way to earning their status as restricted drivers.

The mentors and new drivers are part of the Safer Ashburton rural licensing scheme that aims to give women a new freedom in their life by gaining their driver’s’ licence.

Co-ordinator Wendy Hewitt is the driving force behind the programme, along with her mentors and tutors from Ashburton’s Learning Centre, and the first group of new drivers have achieved their learner driver status and are well on the way to sitting a driving test to gain restricted driver status.

Another group of 12 is now working towards becoming learner drivers.

Without the willingness of mentors, who spend time on the road with those learner drivers as they put theory into practice, the programme simply wouldn’t work, Hewitt said.

While the programme is aimed at migrants, it is open to any newcomers to the district who want to become licensed drivers.

For many rural women, their inability to drive meant isolation from their own community as they became reliant on others to take them to school and commu-

A wide range of nationalities are represented in Ashburton’s two driver courses – Ukraine, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Philippines, Brazil, South Africa, Indo-Fiji and New Zealand.

Hewitt said she was grateful to have a strong pool of volunteers who worked one-on-one with women to develop skills and confidence behind the wheel.

“This programme simply wouldn’t work without those

mentors or without the great women who take on the job of child minders while mothers are studying,” she said.

Among the mentors’ team there are several people who understand first-hand what it’s like to

be a stranger in a new community.

“They know what it’s like to come to a new country and they’ve experienced the challenges that brings.”

The programme is funded through the Lotteries Commission, Advance Ashburton, COGs, The Lion Foundation, Community Trust Mid and South Canterbury, Ashburton District Road Safety Council and the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust.

Mentor Donna Harvey said that after a little initial nervousness she was enjoying her role as a driving mentor.

She works with her student for one hour, twice a week “I’ve said to my student that I’ll go as often as she needs and as often as I can fit it in.”

The role of mentor was incredibly rewarding as you watched a new driver gain confidence, she said.

For her one of the side benefits of being part of the scheme was that as part of her training she underwent a refresher on her own understanding of the rules of the road.

With a new team of learner drivers likely to be ready for the road early next year, Hewitt is looking for additional mentors.

A third intake for the learner driver study course will start in March and registrations of interest are open now at Community House.

Skatepark 10 years in making

It has been 10 years in the making, and finally it is within reach – a skatepark for Methven.

Kidzmethven volunteers announced yesterday they had received resource consent to build the $300,000 facility, on leased council land at the corner of Bank Street and McMillan Street.

Kircher said she and fellow members were proud of the design and ecstatic about the resource consent being approved.

“This week Kidzmethven received the news they had been waiting for,” Kircher said.

She and fellow members would launch plans to the public at the Night Market tonight at Mt Hutt Memorial Hall in Methven.

Their resource consent applica-

tion was submitted in September this year after months of working on the design and plans, completed by Methven’s Sam Kircher.

Kidzmethven has been busy fundraising over the years and so far raised around 10 per cent of the total $300,000 required.

It has also received two grants from the Ashburton District Council, which have been spent on work to date, including

design and marketing.

The organisation’s last fundraiser for the year is the Night Market.

It will then take a break and start again in the New Year.

“We have a great marketing plan which can be tweaked to apply for corporate or community funds,” Kircher said.

In the meantime a plywood ramp was installed at Chambers Park. It soared in popularity and new efforts began to establish a skatepark, leading to choice of the current site.

Disguised as Sister Mary Clarence, Deloris finds herself stifled by the rigid lifestyle but soon inspires her fellow nuns to create a more contemporary choir.

Authorities tackle Mafia Italian authorities said they had dismantled the rebuilt upper echelons of the Mafia in the Sicilian capital by arresting 46 people, including the man presumed to have taken over as provincial kingpin after the death of “boss of bosses” Salvatore “Toto” Riina.

Based on wiretaps, police determined that Settimo Mineo was elected head of a reconstructed “cupola,” or provincial mob commission, during a May 29 meeting of clan leaders in Palermo. It was the first time clan leaders had gathered in such a forum for years, and followed Riina’s November 2017 death, prosecutors said.

Italy’s chief anti-Mafia prosecutor, Federico Cafiero de Raho, said the election of Mineo, 80, was significant because it showed that the centre of power of Cosa Nostra had shifted to Palermo. Under Riina, its longtime base was Corleone, the Sicilian town made famous by writer Mario Puzo when he used Corleone as the main character’s name in his 1969 novel The Godfather.

PHOTO AP vincial commission” structure was created in the 1950s as the decision-making forum for Sicilian and US Mafia families. During the 1980s, it became less collegial under Riina’s domination and effectively ceased to function after his 1993 arrest.

Prosecutors say Mineo effectively tried to resurrect the structure in the province of Palermo and return to the rules governing territory and communication that had previously dictated dealings

among mob clans.

Palermo prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi said Mineo had already served a lengthy prison sentence for Mafia association and other crimes after he was swept up in the maxi-trials against the Sicilian Mafia in the 1980s and ’90s. As the eldest of the local clan leaders, he enjoyed particular respect, he said.

“This is a sign that Cosa Nostra doesn’t abandon its rules,” Lo Voi told a press conference.

“And that despite the convic-

tions, despite the trials, important people can take over the most important roles once they’re back in play.”

Those arrested are suspected of mafia association, extortion, weapons violations and other charges, police said.

After Riina’s 1993 arrest, the Sicilian Mafia saw a degree of marginalisation compared with the Calabrian-based ‘ndrangheta organised crime syndicate or the Neapolitan Camorra. But Italian officials said it nevertheless continued increasing its financial and business activities, and even started doing deals with the other southern syndicates.

“This is what emerges from the other investigations, that apparently facing this kind of situation, Palermo could not stay behind and not share with all the bosses what was to be the plan,” Cafiero De Raho said.

Interior Minister Matteo Salvini called the sweep in Palermo an “extraordinary operation”. Salvini said in a tweet that it had “dismantled the new ‘cupola’ of Cosa Nostra”. – AP

Ryan, Mellencamp engaged Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp spent part of their Monday strolling the New York City streets together. The newly engaged couple were spotted out for the first time since they broke the news last month, as they ran errands in the Big Apple. Ryan, 57, wore a buttoned-up wool green trench coat with green pants and black sneakers. The actress carried a cross-strap bag and accessorised her look with gold sunglasses. The pair began dating in 2011 after Mellencamp ended his 18-year marriage to model Elaine Irwin, and were together for three years before calling it quits in August 2014.

Israelis protests over violence against women Tens of thousands of protesters marched in Tel Aviv on Tuesday against what they see as the Israeli government’s inadequate response to violence against women.

Red-capped demonstrators called for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “wake up” and carried signs reading “Women’s blood is not cheap” and “We are killed and the government is silent”.

Organisers of the nationwide protests want the government to implement a $67 million plan it promised last year to combat violence against women.

At least 24 women were killed in Israel this year, most of whom notified the police prior to their deaths that they were concerned for their safety.

“We had to do something radical, to make sure that women in Israel show the government that we are not going to take this anymore,” said Ruti Klein, a protest organiser.

Netanyahu came under fire last week after a visit to a women’s shelter where he demanded the government act.

He was called out for voting against a proposal to establish a parliamentary commis-

sion of inquiry into violence against women.

Dozens of major Israeli corporations and municipalities supported Tuesday’s strike by paying women who took leave.

The protests cut across Israeli society’s many divides.

Religious and secular Israelis, both Arabs and Jews alike, attended protests in every major city across the country.

In Jerusalem, protesters splattered red paint on a street littered with signs bearing the names of dozens of women killed.

Activists filled a Tel Aviv square with some 200 dyed-

red shoes meant to symbolise violence against women.

Kefaia, 42, an Israeli Arab woman who joined the protests, said her husband was sentenced to only five months in prison for trying to kill her with a knife, and that she fears for her safety when he is released next week.

She declined to give her last name for fear he would retaliate against her.

“I’ve been scared to talk for so long, because these topics are really sensitive in the Arab community,” she said.

“But I can’t be silent anymore.”

Video wins Turner Prize British artist Charlotte Prodger has won the prestigious Turner Prize for art with a video shot on an iPhone. Prodger was announced as winner of the 25,000 pound prize, which often sparks debate about the value of modern art. The 44-year-old artist was nominated for two videos, including a meditation on identity and the Scottish landscape Prodger shot over the course of a year on her iPhone.

Jurors praised the way Prodger “explores lived experience as mediated through technologies and histories.” Founded in 1984, the Turner Prize is awarded annually to a UK-based artist.

Plastic in turtles widespread First fire, then flooding Plastic particles and manmade fibres have been found in the guts of more than 100 sea turtles from around the world.

Scientists carried out tests on turtles that had died after becoming stranded or caught in fishing nets.

The animals spanned three oceans, the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean, and included members of every known sea turtle species.

The researchers looked for synthetic particles less than 5mm in length and found them in every one of the 102 turtles studied.

Fibres from sources such as clothing, tyres, cigarette filters, ropes and fishing nets were the most common types of particle discovered.

In total, 800 individual parti-

cles were recovered.

But since only part of each animal’s gut was studied, the true number ingested could be 20 times higher, the researchers said.

Likely sources of the particles are thought to be polluted seawater and sediments, or consumption of prey or plants.

“At the moment, this is not the main threat to this species group but it is a clear sign that we need to act to better govern global waste,” Senior author Professor Brendan Godley, also from the University of Exeter, said.

The worst affected turtles were from the Mediterranean, the study found.

The Exeter team worked in collaboration with Greenpeace scientists.

Parts of Queensland which have endured nearly a fortnight of bushfires are now having to deal with flooding rains, as residents return to find out whether their homes made it through the blazes.

On Tuesday afternoon severe storms were dumping heavy rain and large hail on many parts of central Queensland.

It’s hoped the rain will help to douse many of the fires still lingering around the affected areas, however authorities issued a warning on Tuesday for potential flash flooding, in an ironic turnaround to the last few days of scorching conditions.

More rain and storms had been expected yesterday in many areas.

Despite the rains, fire crews

are still battling more than 100 fires across the state, but conditions have eased enough to allow them to get the upper hand and allow residents back into the area south of Gladstone.

Those who fled Deepwater, Rules Beach, Oyster Creek and Baffle Creek were allowed to go home from midday on Tuesday.

Authorities continue to monitor several of the most serious fires including one on North Stradbroke Island, off Brisbane, and another at Lowmead in central Queensland.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Deputy Commissioner Mark Roche warned the danger wasn’t yet over and asked evacuees to be patient.

Hart 2019 Oscars host Kevin Hart has a new job — he will host the 2019 Academy Awards, a role the prolific actor-comedian says fulfils a longtime dream. Hart announced his selection for the 91st Oscars in an Instagram statement. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences followed up with a tweet that welcomed him “to the family”. The announcement came hours after trade publication The Hollywood Reporter posted a story calling the Oscars host position “the least wanted job in Hollywood”. Hart clearly doesn’t feel that way, writing on Instagram that it has been on his list of dream jobs for years.

Know your limit – know theirs too E

very Friday night John sits down with his workmates to enjoy a few beers to celebrate the end of the week.

He’s done it for more than 20 years, it’s become a tradition and it takes a pretty special occasion for him to miss the weekly debrief of the week that was and the discussions around what the weekend might have in store.

John knows that four beers is his limit. Anymore and he’s likely to be over the limit and on Friday nights, when there aren’t a few bags of potato chips or something to nibble on in the smoko room, he knows he can only have three – anymore means he can’t get behind the wheel.

Sitting across the room from

John is Alex, he’s the young buck of the business – the whippersnapper, desperate to impress his workmates and show that he deserves their respect, both socially and on the workshop floor.

So, when John and the others sit down on a Friday night, Alex makes sure he’s there with them.

He wants to be included, to feel like he’s a real part of the team. And when John has four

beers, Alex makes sure he has four as well.

He wants to show he can match it with the old guys, he wants to earn his stripes.

But there is a difference.

When John goes to get into his car having had his four beers, he does so knowing that he’s not over the legal limit. For Alex it’s a different story. Because he’s still young, he’s on a zero-alcohol limit and shouldn’t be having any beers after work on a Friday night.

John gets home safely and thinks nothing much of his weekly ritual. Alex however, gets pulled over by police a few blocks from his flat. He fails the breathalyser and ends up in court where

he loses his licence and becomes just another statistic in a growing number of young drink drivers from within our district.

And all because he saw someone else doing it, and so believed it must have been the right thing to do.

Yesterday’s news, from the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service, that drink driving and binge-drinking among young people in our district is still of major concern, won’t stop being a concern until we get right down to the crux of the problem.

What has been the normal for so many people, for such a long time in their lives, is now more heavily watched and enforced than ever before for the next

generation.

And as impressionable people, it’s not hard to see where young people get themselves in hot water.

Yes, not every incident relates to the case like John and Alex, but the number of drink-drivers appearing in our court news who are caught on their way home from work having enjoyed a beer or two at the end of the week would suggest it is.

It’s not an excuse and by no means should after work drinks be cancelled, but a bit more alertness to what is going around the room might be a really good step to bringing down those drink drive statistics in the future.

PETE’S PERSPECTIVE

Editor, PO Box 77 (well most of them.) There have been some priceless moments and treasured memories made.

But looking ahead there’s a reasonably intensive period through until we get the Fire Museum officially opened in April, but beyond that, I am keeping the diary clear.

Absolutely and utterly clear.

Apart from my jobs.

Just committing this to paper makes me excited.

My resolve started with removing myself from the commentary tower at Classic Fighters Air Show next Easter at Omaka.

I have done it for yonks, it’s a world class and spectacular show held every two years and I wouldn’t swap having had that experience for anything.

But the urge to do any of it has dried up. Well, for now anyway.

A sabbatical is called for.

I’m excited about going to that compartment every man has in his head.

There’s the family box.

The work box.

The hobby box.

The mate’s box.

And the most special box of all in a man’s head, . . . the empty one.

I want to live in that box for a whole year!

I am at that point where the prospect of total and complete boredom is seducing me like a voluptuous temptress.

It is said that the truly special moments in life are often the simplest yet, in our strive to achieve anything and everything, the true meaning often gets lost in the white noise.

Some will find solace in their beliefs and their god, and if that’s their thing, good on them.

For me, I expect nothing beyond this life at all and providing I manage a relatively clean exit when my time comes around, that’s cool with me.

So for now, and it could be an age thing . . . I don’t know, I want to experience calm, control, peace and solitude.

The ability to head away somewhere nice occasionally for a simple drive, (no I am not walking to Wanaka), and other than that, tend the property, enjoy the native bush and birds chirping in our backyard whilst supping on my third cuppa for the morning.

That’s living.

I have arrived at an age where a lot of things are a stretch to believe in. Politicians of all colours, social engineers, you get my drift.

I have also arrived at a point

where Santa is one of my few real truths.

So, to have his very essence vandalised by a social engineer masquerading as a parade organiser in Nelson this year was, for this writer, the lowest form of cultural desecration.

Santa is my one great hope, and although this is true today, there was that time back in the sixties when I temporarily suspended belief.

You know, one of those young, rebellious, know-it-all phases.

I remember locking my young next-door-neighbour in our lounge and not letting him go home until he agreed there was no Father Christmas.

“Course there is, where do the presents come from????”

In this age of “Me Too” and anti-bullying it is important to own your past.

What the hell have you done with 2018?

It was Christmas and now it’s Christmas. Again.

This year truly has been one that, for this scribe, has passed at hypersonic speed.

I think it’s something to do with being consumed by projects and commitments that causes you to put your head down and bum up and just go for it.

And then when you do surface you find that another year has gone by.

I managed a few off-shore excursions this year too, which was very, very nice, but I have something quite special planned for next year.

Practically nothing.

Well, that’s the theory anyway.

Different things spin your wheels at different stages of your life.

Since my youth it has been one big thing after another. Diverse stuff too.

From running an Audio Visual Expo at school to introduce colour television to Ashburton, single-handedly running Rodger Fox Big Band Concerts in the North Island – to help fundraise to get his band to perform in Montreux, (I sold the tickets, built the stage and rigged the lighting all on my own whilst I was crook as a dog), to building the Dunedin Santa Parade from scratch, helping take the Aviation Museum from 80 members to over 500 members, restoring cars to give away as door prizes for a car show, starting a vintage collection that has grown into a business, joining the small team redeveloping the Fire Museum at Tinwald, . . . it has all been a helluva ride.

I have loved every minute,

Eradication cost ratio sorted

Dairy and beef farmers will fund nearly one-third of the eradication programme for mycoplasma bovis via their industry groups.

After much negotiation DairyNZ and Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) have agreed on the split of their share of the 32 per cent cost of the 10-year programme.

The Government is funding 68 per cent of overall costs.

The dairy sector will pay most of the farmer share – meeting 94 per cent of the costs of the programme, which would be about $272 million, and beef 6 per cent – $17.4m An independent panel came up with the industry split based on economic size of the sectors, the risk of infection and the estimated impacts on the farm-gate revenue for milk and beef.

DairyNZ chairman Jim van der Poel said the funding split was reached after a “robust’’ process.

He said farmers would be disappointed that the costs of system changes was not factored in, but understood the difficulties of doing this, and accepted the recommendations and need to move forward.

“We are very grateful for the public support and the support of the Government to assist

However, the boards of the industry groups adjusted this slightly to more accurately reflect the shared costs.

Van der Poel said DairyNZ would fund its costs by a separate biosecurity levy in consultation

with farmers with information to be sent to them early next year.

“We argued strongly that the cost split should also include the costs that would be associated with changes to farming systems in both sectors if M. bovis was not controlled and eradicated.

“However, the panel felt it was

too difficult to determine these costs and settled on likely clinical impacts instead.’’

Dairy cull cows will not be subject to the M. bovis beef levy.

B+LNZ chairman Andrew Morrison said beef cattle farmers now had some certainty of their costs of the phased eradication response.

“Our farmers are supportive of the phased eradication response, but one of their areas of concern is not knowing what the cost of their individual contributions to the response would be which will be $17.4m over the 10 years of the response.’’

He said the final cost had yet to be played out, but the industries had at least settled on a split and could work with farmers on calculating possible levy rates.

For beef cattle farmers, the contribution will be collected through a separate biosecurity levy at the point of slaughter.

The Ministry for Primary Industries says the total number of infected properties so far is 75, with 33 of them still active and their herds yet to be culled.

So far the spring bulk milk testing is three-quarters through and only found three farms confirmed with M. bovis, which were already part of MPI’s tracing programme with known links to the disease.

After seven consecutive falls global dairy commodity prices finally lifted 2.2 per cent at the Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction.

This is the first increase since prices started their decline in May. Prices rose for all commodities except cheddar at the December 4 auction, compared with the last event two weeks ago.

Buttermilk powder jumped 16.9 per cent for an average price of $US2973 a tonne.

The key ingredient of whole milk powder was up 2.5 per cent at $US2667/t.

NZX analyst Amy Castleton said there was likely increased demand for whole milk powder because of lower volumes on offer compared with the previous auction “WMP offer volumes are coming back off their peak at the previous GDT event which is in line with normal seasonal trends.’’

The rise was in line with market expectations, she said.

Prices for anhydrous milkfat (AMF) rose 3.9 per cent at $US4755 and butter 2.7 per cent at $US3745.

“Ahead of the event, the derivatives market had expected lifts for these grades and contracts of each of these products,’’ said Castleton.

Compared with the last GDT auction slightly more AMF was sold, but less butter.

Last week Fonterra made the call to remove 2000 tonnes each of butter and AMF from its GDT offer over the next few months.

Lower volumes are likely to have spurred some demand for milkfats.

Skim milk powder rose slightly at $US1970.

Yesterday’s auction ended with 178 bidders buying 36,450 tonnes of dairy product, compared with 42,966t at the last event.

Farmers flock to FAR field day

Australasian “doom and gloom’’ about herbicide resistance among arable growers appears to have lifted, says a South Australia expert.

University of Adelaide’s Dr Peter Boutsalis gave a grim portrayal of weeds developing resistance to herbicides in Australia as the international speaker for the Foundation of Arable Research (FAR) field day, Crops, at Chertsey yesterday.

Australia was ahead of New Zealand with herbicide resistance, he said.

“We have had resistance for a long time. It’s been dominated by continuous cropping, single crops per year and over-use of herbicides, especially in the

1990s and early 2000s which has now caused widespread resistance around the major cropping zones.’’

Australian resistance had accelerated because of its large properties and the need to cover the ground more quickly for weed control.

Australian growers had fewer crop rotations which reduced their range of tactics and a tighter reliance on herbicides for the main weed of annual ryegrass.

But his talk was not without hope.

Boutsalis said Australian weed surveys showed resistance had plateaued in some cases and was even going down sometimes.

“When I was giving presentations to farmers 10 years ago it was actually a doom and gloom

story with no new herbicides coming.

“Since then we have started conducting random weed surveys in Australia and identified the problems. “[The industry] has put in hundreds of thousands of dollars in the surveys and that has raised awareness with the chemical companies and they have responded by investing and producing new modes of herbicides that are helping growers tackle the multiple resistance weeds that exist today.’’

Over the past five years ago new mode of action herbicides have come on the market with more to follow the next few years.

Growers have added tactics such as seed capture techniques to try to remove ryegrass and

other weeds that have survived herbicides.

Glyphosate is the most common herbicide to kill weeds, but growers were over reliant on the effective herbicide and plants survived because they were resistant and caused problems when allowed to set seed.

Boutsalis said FAR leaders were planning to introduce random weed surveys and that would give a more accurate picture of the resistance gap between the two countries.

He said growers could follow the lessons Australian farmers had learned and use multiple tactics including residual herbicides with different modes of action than in-crop herbicides.

Resistance testing would help them find which herbicides were

working and failing.

Boutsalis said growers should not cut costs with herbicides and use top label products which had quality ingredients.

Often resistance would start with plants which initially had weak resistance mechanisms and they would go unnoticed, slowly building survivors and catching growers by surprise.

FAR chief executive Alison Stewart said about 400 growers and industry people attended the event with perhaps more coming and going during the day.

Speaker topics reflected the complexity of crop growing and included the sector’s environmental footprint, aerial imagery, greenhouse gases and herbicide resistance as well as crop performance and profitability, she said.

When is it going to stop raining?

Mid Canterbury farmers are wondering when it’s going to stop raining after getting through one of the wettest Novembers in some areas for about 150 years.

At Winchmore there were rain days for half the month and records show it was the second wettest November since 1867.

There have only been a couple more Novembers with higher rainfalls – in 1952 268mm of rain was recorded and in 1967 there was 163mm. Longer records show 154mm of rain was measured that month in 1882 and 139mm in 1896.

Showing the fickleness of weather, Winchmore’s 184mm

was recorded in November compared with 2.8mm for the whole of November 2017.

HydroServices managing director Dr Anthony Davoren said he had not seen as much rainfall for November since beginning measurement of soil moisture levels in 1983.

He said it might have seemed to people that it rained every day last month, but rainfall records showed this was not the case.

Ashburton had 194mm, Methven 173mm, Chertsey 142mm, Wakanui 155mm and Geraldine 280mm. Dorie was recorded to have received 60mm, but the accuracy of the rain gauge is being questioned.

There was less rain north of

the Rakaia River at 123 to 140mm and into North Canterbury.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president Michael Salvesen said his family had rainfall records going back to when Wakare was first settled and it looked like the last time it was this wet for November was in 1952.

“Apart from the really old fellas who were kids then this would be the wettest November in living memory.’’

He said farmers were looking forward to higher sunshine hours.

“Some people would say we have had more than our fair share of rain. We had just under 270mm for November and last year we got 40mm for the first

week which was 38mm more than other people on the Plains when it was very dry and very hot. You couldn’t get much more of a greater contrast.’’

Farmers on lighter soils were feeling the inconvenience of so much rain. On heavier and siltier land such as Methven, Eiffelton and along the foothills crops were struggling with the high water table.

Salvesen said the wet conditions underfoot could remain for some time yet as rain passed through the aquifers to springs in the lower Plains.

“The soil moisture levels could stay high for a long time [which might be good] unless it is too wet, which it is at the moment.’’

Fodder beet crops were looking “pretty sad’’ and farmers were starting to worry about in-calf rates over the mating period and delayed lamb growth. Farmers were getting behind with spraying, tailing, calf marking and other stock work as it was too wet to bring animals into the yards.

“But on the plus side when it does clear up a bit there will be plenty of grass around for a while.’’

Even if it suddenly turned dry farms would have enough soil moisture to keep them going for at least three weeks. Farms on heavier soils would need even less rain, Salvesen said the rain had followed mild conditions.

Vineyard owner must pay $3.3m

By HamisH FletcHer The owner of a Nelson vineyard has been ordered to pay $US2.3 million ($3.3m) to two Las Vegas executives.

Glenn Schaeffer, an Americanborn hotelier who formerly headed the Mandalay Resort group in the US, is the majority shareholder of Mahana Estates – one of New Zealand’s biggest winery-based tourism and hospitality operations.

For the past three years Schaeffer – who has given substantially to the arts in New Zealand – has been battling a High Court lawsuit brought against him by James Murren and Daniel Lee. Murren is chief executive of MGM Resorts International, a multi-billion dollar Las Vegas hospitality business, while Lee is also the boss of a casino company in the same city.

Murren and Lee said they and others discussed forming a partnership with Schaeffer that would own a vineyard and winery.

After a 2008 approach from Schaeffer, Murren said he and his trust had personally paid Schaeffer $US1.6 million ($NZ2.3m) and

Lee said he paid $US700,406. The pair allege false representations were made to them that they would be part owners of the vineyard In a just-released judgment, Justice David Collins ruled Schaeffer made negligent misstatements to Murren and Lee and is liable for them.

US private equity player Hellman & Friedman has bid $6.45 a share for Trade Me, valuing the ASX/ NZX-listed company at $2.56 billion.

The bid trumps an earlier $6.40 a share ($2.54b) offer from British PE outfit Apax Partners, which was revealed on November 22.

Neither offer is binding at this point. Both are subject to due diligence. Apax is set to make a binding offer on December 12.

As with the Apax offer, Trade Me’s board has given itself legal wiggle room to field other bids as it mulls Hellman’s alternative non-binding offer.

Hellman has previously invested in similar companies, and has recently raised a $US15b fund. Its dealmakers are said to have been recently in New Zealand.

Craigs Investment Partners deputy head of institutional research, Stephen Ridgewell, noted the Apax offer was 25 per cent above Trade Me’s pre-offer close, and a 26 per cent premium on the company’s average post-IPO forward price/earnings ratio.

But last week he also saw a scenario where a higher bid emerged.

“We see potential for a competing bid to emerge, including potentially from cashed-up trade buyers who could add value to Trade Me’s platform,” he said.

As the Apax offer came in, Devon Funds Management chief investment officer Mark Brown also saw room for some sweetening, given Trade Me’s market power as an incumbent and because it’s attractive as “enormously cash gen-

erative and has very little debt”.

And he says that beyond the potential bidding war between rival private equity players Apax and Hellman, it’s possible that a trade buyer like Alibaba could place a bid.

The Chinese giant “has bought players in other parts of the world rather than start from scratch. You could see someone in the industry making that play”, he says.

Trade Me investors have not been entirely convinced. Shares have jumped from $5.10 to a recent $6.05 since the Apax bid was made public, but are still shy of its $6.40 indicative offer or Hellman’s $6.45.

Brown doesn’t want to speculate how high bidding for Trade Me could go, but thinks it will be a good result for shareholders – if not so much for the NZX or the country.

“In some respects, it’s sad because we’re losing another excellent New Zealand business off the bourse. It’s bittersweet. We’re getting an excellent outcome for our investors but the long-term outcome for capital markets in New Zealand is not good.”

Meanwhile, Morningstar analyst Gareth James says if Apax or one of its peers is the successful buyer, Trade Me could be about to be saddled with a ton of debt in the grand tradition of private equity companies.

The average leverage among Apax companies at March 2017 was 4.5 times, meaning Trade Me could be saddled with about $738 million.

The company’s net debt was $64m as at June 30, although that increased in September when Trade Me paid a special dividend funded through debt.

On August 22, Trade Me said it was distributing $100m via a 22 cents per share special dividend, as the online auction company announced it turned over more than $250m for the first time to deliver a 3.9 per cent increase in net profit for the year to June 30 of $96.6m.

The company was founded by Sam Morgan in 1999.

Morgan sold it to Fairfax in 2006 for $700m. The Australian publisher, in turn, floated Trade Me in late 2011 at a $1.07b valuation.

Scallop balls 200g scallops 200g white fish fillet 1T pickled pink ginger, finely chopped 1/2 t salt 1/2 C panko breadcrumbs 2T sesame seeds Mayonnaise (preferably the Japanese brand Kyupi) Tonkatsu sauce (I used the Bulldog brand) Oil for frying ■ Divide the scallops in half. Place half in the bowl of a food processor with the fish, ginger and salt, process to a fine paste; it turns a beautiful apricot colour because of the scallop roe. Using a flexible spatula, scrape the scallop paste into a small bowl.

■ Finely chop the remaining half of the scallop, add to the scallop paste and mix through. If you have time, cover the bowl and put in the fridge for half an hour

■ Place Panko crumbs and sesame seeds into a small bowl and mix thoroughly.

■ Take a tablespoon of the paste and roll it into a ball in your hands. Place it into the bowl

Heat about three cm of oil in a saucepan or pan, use a deep fryer if you have one. If you are using a thermometer, the oil should be between 180°C and 200°C. If not when the surface is shimmering and a cube of dry bread takes about 30 seconds to brown. It is important that the oil is hot enough otherwise the end result will be very greasy.

Fry the scallop balls until golden.

Drain well and serve with mayonnaise and Tonkatsu sauce while hot.

Heather Goodall winning the Snr. Ladies singles at the club beating Barbara Ewan 21-16 over a close fought game.

In the Juniors Laraine Mills winning over Ann Gibson. At the Hampstead Rose bowl on Monday the team of Jo Dennis, Ollie Collins, Relda Prendergast & Barbara Ewan were placed 3rd.

Congratulations to all those ladies for their achievements. In the mid-week men’s interclub the number 1 team losing to Methven 1-2 and the number 2 team losing to Allenton 1-2 after an extra end.

Saturday Roll Overs, Alison Gibbs & Charlie Rooke coming out the winners, 2 wins and a loss.

Ashburton Golf Club Well that’s the 2018 season all closed and sorted.

A good field on Closing Day saw the Smallbone Trophy lifted by the lovely Kay Fox partnered by the equally lovely Paul May. Now, one of two things must have happened here. Either Lefty found a bit of form and worked in tandem, dovetailing with the ever steady Kay, or Mrs Fox played out of her skin, kept him well hydrated, massaged his ego and sank all the putts!

Well I know where I would be putting my money.

After chatting with a few people, it seems I missed a good night at the

presentation evening. Another great success on the social side.

Well done to the organisers and all the trophy winners.

We are now supposed to be in the off season, but try telling that to the calendar. This Saturday we kick off the Summer Stablefords, which means its shootout time again.

The next six Saturdays are all Stableford rounds and all are qualifiers for the Property Brokers Shootout. You only need to have two good rounds to get into the final, normally around 77 or 78 points gets you in, but obviously the more times you play the more chances of a good round you get.

All you have to do, is pay the starter $10 and tell them that you would like to enter, don’t worry if you can’t make it this week, entries are open right up to round 5.

The last couple of years we have been a bit light from the ladies side. I’m sure we can pencil young Bev Chinn in for a finals berth and Liz Cabout always gives it a nudge, but we would love to see more ladies take part and emulate exchamp Hilary Lovett.

The top 19 qualifiers will fight it out in the final which is always a great spectacle and wonderful fun. This will be held on Sunday January 27, with the winner again picking up a club sub thanks to the brilliant team at Property Brokers.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club A successful weekend for the Ashburton MSA Petanque Club with Jan Guilford and Marion Harrison being the runners up in the National Senior Women’s Championships played in Christchuch last weekend.

This is a first for our club. These two were third in the South Island Senior womens doubles two weekends ago.

There were 30 teams taking part in this tournament, including players who represent New Zealand, so competition was tough.

Jan Guilford and Marion Harrison beat last year’s Trophy holders in the semifinals and put up a good contest in the final.

Karen Bensdorp and partner Ron Paterson from Papanui who also played in the South Island Doubles, took part in this tournament and were runners-up in the Plate.

Rewa Kyle and Ellen Pithie from Ashburton, playing together for the first time, and playing in this type of tournament for the first time played off in the Bowl.

Ashburton can be proud of their representatives and how well they performed.

We have our break-up day on Sunday 16 where we will play for the Une Deux Trois Trophy. For this we play two games each of doubles, triples, and singles, and this will be followed by afternoon tea.

The year has been busy for several of our players, who have had many successful events along the way, and it has been great to see the progress in the playing ability of our social players, without who, our club would be very small.

Hinds Women’s Institute The Hinds Women’s Institute met for their November meeting at the Hinds Community Centre.

Considering the recent inclement weather a pleasing number of members were able to attend.

The Ode and Aspirations were led by Rosa in the absence of President Betty.

The usual business meeting matters with much discussion followed.

Thanks were extended to Betty and Valmai for taking ownership of the Ashburton A&P Show Tray and Bay, to those who made and delivered flower posies to patients in the Hospital’s Ward 6, to those who knitted one, or some, of the

70 beanies for the Christchurch Neonatal babies and to those who made the emergency patient kits for the Ashburton Hospital’s A&E Unit. These kits included a toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, comb and shampoo.

A welcome gift to those in need.

Notices were given for the various 2018 Ashburton Federation meetings and these were dutifully recorded.

After all the business had been attended to, the members enjoyed making a Christmas “Santa” gift tag and constructing colourful pages of interesting pictures for a child’s scrapbook which we will present to the Ashburton Hospital’s Children’s Ward.

It was an enjoyable afternoon and altogether we have had a busy year.

We will meet for our Christmas outing at the Ashburton Hotel on December 10.

Tinwald Branch New Zealand Red Cross The final meeting of 2018 was held December 4.

Members gathered at The Stables Tinwald for a lovely lunch and then went to the Tinwald Hall for a short meeting.

President Pat O’Brien welcomed everyone and a new member Val was also welcomed.

The meeting began with a Remembrance to the many Red Cross personnel who have lost their lives while working for the Red Cross throughout the world.

This also includes three New Zealand Red Cross Aid Delegates – Mac Riding who died in Vietnam in 1975, Doctor Jock Sutherland who was killed while working in a hospital in Pakistan in 1993 and Sheryl Thayer who was killed while working as a nurse in a hospital in Chechnya in 1996.

Three candles were lit in their memory by our Patroness Mary Miles as their names were read, followed by a poem

by Bob McKerrow, himself a Red Cross Aid Delegate from New Zealand.

A minute’s silence was held followed by all saying the Red Cross Principles.

Members were reminded of the function to recognise volunteers on December 5 which is International Volunteers Day. Information was received about the New Zealand Red Cross National Youth Forum to be held next March.

Members were thanked for all their work during the year and were wished a Happy Christmas … Meeting was closed and gifts were exchanged with many smiles as each gift was opened.

U3A November Meeting This November meeting was held five years to the day since U3A Hakatere Ashburton was initiated.

Approximately 70 people attended to enjoy a talk by Jeffrey Paparoa Holman who writes poetry, memoir and history.

Realising that as an adult he felt incomplete, and recognising how his New Zealand heritage was so much part of him, he became a fluent Te Reo speaker and adopted Paparoa as his middle name as this was the mountain range between his beloved Blackball and Runanga.

Jeffrey explained how memoirs are developed and structured. They are written as a perilous journey where the writer is the subject and the subject is the writer so the potential for self-indulgence and narcissism is obvious. But history is not made up of great men and women; rather by you and me, those unseen in the public sphere, with apparently invisible, inconsequential lives.

His memoir writing was inspired by his life – his social history varied and interesting.

Born in England, growing up on the West Coast of New Zealand in Blackball and Runanga then having forty plus jobs including going to university to gain a Phd in Maori studies.

A memoir is a memory, not an autobiography or a biography but a record of oneself important for its content.

The presentation of his most recent publication of Now When It Rains was aimed to open up discussion on the process of life writing, its values and its pitfalls.

Writing of interesting experiences, being aware that each chapter has a rhythm, the language is instinct, not grammar, is poetry.

The chapters are kept short, images and photographs are relevant to the text and not in the middle of the book.

Deciding where to finish a chapter and how to start a new one is necessary so the poetry flows.

Jeffrey read a couple of chapters of the book so one could get a feel for the book and what he had been explaining.

This was a presentation enjoyed by all present and many of those present were inspired to go home and start on their memoirs.

The next meeting is February 26, 2019.

Poaching claims: School kicked out St Kentigern College has reacted to the decision to exclude them from Auckland’s top First XV rugby competition – by launching a stunning counter-attack against rival schools.

The Herald revealed yesterday St Kents have been effectively kicked out of next year’s 1A First XV competition after a coalition of rival schools agreed to boycott the school because of their recruitment policy, which they deem to be morally and ethically reprehensible.

St Kents revealed a few weeks ago that they have taken on five boys on full scholarships, all of whom played for first XVs at schools outside the Auckland area.

Although there are no rules regarding how many students can be introduced from outside of Auckland, other schools felt this was a step too far.

As a result, 10 schools in the 1A competition where St Kents play are refusing to play the school in next year’s competition.

The Auckland schools have since created a document about rules and conduct they’ve all had

to agree to regarding poaching and welfare.

St Kents refused to sign it, and

therefore were informed no other school will honour their fixture against them in 2019.

The Herald understands St Kents have requested College Sport Auckland, the governing body of secondary schools sport, to investigate the recruitment of “several other schools” in the competition.

“A school has asked me to investigate that’s all I can say on the matter,” Jim Lonergan, chief executive of College Sport Auckland, told the Herald.

The Herald understands Kings College were also in the firing line for boycotts but have agreed to enact changes to their rugby programme.

Last year, King’s College won a partial victory in a legal fight to allow new female students to play for its elite sports teams, a saga that cost College Sport more than $100,000.

King’s College objected to a rule drawn up by College Sport designed to prevent wealthy schools stacking their top sports

teams with talent poached from other colleges and encourage fair competition between teams in premier sport.

King’s lodged High Court proceedings against College Sport in November of 2016 after the body removed exemptions allowing King’s to bypass the “New to School” rule a month earlier.

Prominent lawyer Mai Chen wrote a letter to College Sport in September 2016 suggesting the proposed removal of King’s exemption may be in breach of the Bill of Rights Act. After a series of mediation meetings, a compromise was reached, which saw girls who enrol at King’s in Year 11 considered new to school for one year instead of the usual two.

Girls new to King’s had been exempt to the restrictions because the school has admitted girls only in Years 12 and 13 since 1980.

But after King’s decided to allow Year 11 girls to enrol last year, their exemption was scrapped by College Sport.

Thirteen in court to face charges A driver has been charged after a horse was allegedly drugged before a harness race earlier this year as the police probe into racefixing in New Zealand continues.

The new allegations emerged yesterday as 13 harness racing figures appeared at Christchurch District Court after being caught up in the 18-month Operation Inca investigation by the National Organised Crime Group.

Many of the racing identities still cannot be named for legal reasons while they deny the match-fixing and other charges.

They are awaiting a High Court hearing in February for name suppression to be argued.

The charges came after raids on multiple stables and properties in Canterbury, Invercargill and Manawatu in September.

The court heard that a male driver in his 50s has been charged with conspiring with another person to manipulate a race result earlier this year by “administering a substance” to a horse before the race “in order to gain a pecuniary advantage, namely the winning stakes”.

the man denied the charge and would elect trial by jury.

Judge Raoul Neave granted him interim name suppression which will be reviewed when he comes back to court – along with many of the others charged over Operation Inca – on March 25 next year.

drew Douglas Stuart, 42, who has previously entered not guilty pleas to three race-fixing allegations, now faces a fourth fixing charge.

It’s alleged that with another man he “manipulated the overall result” of a race earlier this year by deception and without claim

of right. A 40-year old Canterbury man who denies three race-fixing charges and who is yet to enter pleas on two unrelated drugs charges had another drugs charge laid yesterday.

Graham Henry Beirne, a 71-year-old Christchurch man, previously denied two race fix-

ing charges, and yesterday faced a third charge.

Defence counsel Richard Raymond QC asked for no plea to be entered on the new charge, and Judge Neave remanded him to come back to court on March 25.

Three other men – aged 50, 35 and 26 – deny race-fixing allegations, as does Palmerston North man Brent Stephen Wall, 47, and 44-year-old Rolleston-based horse trainer Nigel Raymond McGrath.

Others face drugs charges that their lawyers say are unconnected to the horse racing investigation, including Elie Sawma, a 42-year-old Christchurch hairdresser charged with supplying the Class B controlled drug MDMA, possession of MDMA, and offering to supply the Class A drug cocaine.

Another accused, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, is also yet to enter pleas.

Some of the accused were remanded by Judge Raoul Neave to a Crown case review hearing on March 25 next year, while others will be back in court on January 29.

In brief Sevens dominate noms The national sevens teams dominate nominations for the Team of the Year at the New Zealand Rugby Awards. Back-toback Rugby World Cup Sevens champions and Commonwealth Games gold medallists the Black Ferns head the nominations for the awards to be held in Auckland on December 13. The All Blacks Sevens and All Blacks are also nominated for the New Zealand Team of the Year. Car park climb tests cyclists’ stamina the Car Park Cannon Ball, a cycle race up the eight-floor Innovation parking building in Christchurch.

The event took the form of one-on-one elimination races up the car parking building until there was only one rider left.

Ashburton multisporter Matthew Clough headed to Christchurch at the weekend to compete in an event with a difference, which was all about raising money for a good cause.

Clough was the sole Mid Canterbury rider who took part in

Clough made it through to the quarter-finals, with 16-year-old mountain biker Jacob Turner winning the men’s geared grade and James Knudsen winning the men’s fixie category, after competing in a leather jacket and jeans.

He wasn’t the only one to have a bit of fun along the way, with Peter McLeod incredibly tackling the eight stories on a penny farthing. For the women, Donna Head and Josie Shum defended their women’s geared and fixie titles from last year.

Wilder reveals arm injury

Deontay Wilder has revealed preparations for his WBC heavyweight title defence against Tyson Fury were derailed before they had even begun.

Wilder and Fury fought to a controversial draw in Los Angeles on Sunday (NZ time), with a late knockdown helping Wilder retain his belt.

In the aftermath of the bout, Wilder has revealed he suffered a broken arm in a sparring session 12 weeks out from training camp.

“We kept that a secret,” Wilder told a group of media in LA. “I had surgery and everything.

I broke my arm from right here all the way to up here,” he said, gesturing to indicate an area inside of his right arm from just above his wrist to just below the elbow.

Fury started the bout with a flourish but

Wilder, who was at times hesitant to throw his right hand, was able to knock the “Gypsy King” down in the ninth and 12th rounds which helped his claim for the win.

However, the controversy in the result stemmed from the scorecards with one of the three judges giving the first four rounds to Wilder. The other two judges agreed Wilder won the first, but gave rounds two, three and four to Fury.

The final scorecards read 115-111 to Wilder, 114-112 to Fury, and a 113-113 draw.

Wilder has already said he’s hoping for a rematch against Fury, while Fury’s camp will reportedly lodge a complaint over the judge’s scorecards. Anthony Joshua has also put a call out to both fighters, saying he’d be happy to meet either in the ring.

The subject of one of the most viewed harness racing photos in the world this year is already eyeing up a comeback to the race track in the very near future.

Well respected horseman and former Mid Canterbury man, Terry Chmiel has been on a rest and recuperation regime since a fall on Show Day at Addington that saw a photo of him flying through the air shared around the world.

Chmiel’s drive Divinia Bellezza crashed into the back of a rival runner, who incidentally also happened to be her stablemate, and her driver was catapulted into the air before he came crashing back onto the track.

“I can remember seeing Robbie’s (Robbie Close) horse going rough in front of me and thinking that I needed to get out of his way,” Chmiel said.

“But there wasn’t anywhere to go and the next minute I was flying through the air.

“I can remember the pain when I hit the ground, but other than that there’s not much more I can remember.”

Chmiel was taken to hospital where it was revealed he had broken his ankle and heel in the fall.

“The pain told me it was something serious, but I was also worried about where the horses behind me were too, that’s why I dragged myself onto the inside of the track.

“I didn’t know there’d been a fall further back in the field, so it actually probably worked out OK for me in that sense.”

Chmiel has had a plate and screws inserted into his foot and is heading back to the doctors this week for a progress report to hopefully get a timeline on when he might be able to get back into things properly.

“Initially the hope was that I might be getting back on track by the end of December, but we’ll just have to wait and see what they say this week.”

It wasn’t until much later that Chmiel first saw the image which was captured by renowned racing photographer, Ajay Berry.

“When I first saw it, I couldn’t believe how high I had got in the air, it was pretty incredible to see that perspective.”

Being stuck on crutches with a cast hasn’t been a whole lot of fun, especially at this time of the year when he’d normally be busy driving at race meetings around Canterbury and further afield.

“We’ve got a nice wee team of horses at home too which doesn’t make it any easier, it’s been a little frustrating.

“But hopefully we can get a goal to work towards this week which will help a lot.”

Chmiel was the only driver injured in the incident and all horses involved were treated for minor abrasions but other than that came through the incident unscathed.
