Bus bay plan shot down

The Ashburton District Council has said no to a bus bay being constructed outside the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall and Heritage Centre.

Methven Community Board members sought a report on the proposal, and yesterday received the council’s feedback.

Community relations manager Vincie Billante spoke to the report presented at the meeting.

The proposal was not supported by council staff due to there already being ample provision for parking adjacent to the site, both on the road and in a parking area adjoining the property to its north.

Additionally, it would require removal of accessibility car parks and landscaping, and reconfiguration of the site to replace the accessibility parking. This would reduce the amenity value of the site, and its vista.

“It’s not based on evidence of need, we don’t have the numbers and the figures to justify it,” Billante said.

The proposal had been considered by various divisions of council, including roading, parks and open spaces, commercial, building and planning. It appeared the initial request came from a subtenant of the council which operated a bus tourist business from within the heritage centre.

However, following the meeting, board chairman Dan McLaughlin clarified the initial request had in fact come from the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall and Heritage Centre committee, of which he was formerly chairman.

road, and double parking was not ideal.

McLaughlin was disappointed at the bus bay refusal, but satisfied with a council suggestion to instead look at dedicating space on the road outside, and discuss this with NZTA which administered the road network at the location.

“At least if they can go down that road, that’s something. If that falls over then I think we will have to go and look at it again.”

Resignation shocks

For two late night workers, taking the stairs rather than the lift at the end of their shift was a choice they’ve lived to regret.

Multi-storey buildings might be few and far between in Ashburton, lifts a novelty, but they’re a novelty Steve Devereux and Mandy Woods won’t be trying again after spending two hours on Sunday night trapped between floors in central town Somerset House.

The pair finished their Sunday shift at the Ashburton Guardian and left the office together. Mandy headed for the lift and Steve, a regular stair climber, debated – lift or stairs. He chose the lift.

“Sunday’s the only night I might use the lift if Mandy and I leave at the same time. I stood there tossing up, do I run down the stairs or escort Mandy out.”

They got in, pressed the button and the lift descended. A couple of feet from the bottom there was a clunk, it stopped and the lights on the control panel went out.

Mandy and Steve looked at one another, joked and decided the lift would kick itself back into life in a minute or two. It didn’t.

They pressed the alarm bell and a voice came back - “hold and we’ll see who’s available. Call back in three or four minutes…” They waited and called and called and called. Finally someone answered and said a technician would be

Deputy Prime Minister Bill English has been suggested to take over, with Key saying he will vote for English if he choose to step forward.

National Party Rangitata Electorate chair Mark Oldfield it was totally unexpected but showed Key’s integrity and honesty.

“We can be very proud of where he’s led the country to as a Prime Minister and the huge integrity and respect he has throughout the country and not just the party,” he said.

The Ashburton Trust owns Somerset House but its property agent is Hamish Niles. He says he’s already asked the lift company Otis for a key so there is help close to hand if a situation such as Sunday night occurred. He’s still waiting for that key but said yesterday that chasing it up is his top priority.

As a result he was charged with two more counts of assaulting a woman, assault with a blunt instrument, assault with intent to injure, threatening to kill, resisting police and intentional damage. He has denied all the fresh charges and has elected trial by jury.

Yesterday defence lawyer Roz Burnside petitioned the court to allow Haynes to be released on electronically monitored bail to an Invercargill address, on the

grounds it would take some time to get the jury trial to court.

Burnside also said the nominated address was “at the other end of the country” from where the victim resided.

However, police opposed the bail application, citing Haynes’ previous breaching of court orders.

Judge Maze said the proposed address was technically suitable but agreed Haynes had an extensive record of breaching court orders.

“Electronically monitored bail is not an absolute guarantee of community safety or obedience,” she said.

“The risk of offending on bail is unacceptable – I’m not satisfied he could be relied on to comply.”

Haynes was returned to custody. He will be sentenced on the earlier assault charge on December 12, and will next appear for a case review hearing on the outstanding matters on February 28.

Garden club developing green fingers

From carrots to bok choy, Hampstead School students have a passion for growing food.

Since the start of spring the school runs the Hampstead Garden Club which encourages the students to plant and cater to the needs of various vegetables.

Last week the club decided their garden patch needed to be a colour and so each of the 22 students decorated stones which will be placed in the garden.

The school was donated an array of seeds from Ashburton Rotary Club and included corn, beetroot, carrot, lettuce, radish, peas, potatoes, spinach, bok choy and tubers.

Hampstead School student and club member Will Rollinson, 10, enjoys taking part in the club.

“It’s really fun.

“We get to watch the plants grow up.”

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said it was a great way to teach the students about sustainability and selfreliance.

Rakaia man denied bail A Rakaia man facing a raft of domestic assault charges was denied bail during an appearance in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Michael Bruce Haynes, 28, had been in custody for several weeks pending yesterday’s appearance before Judge Joanna Maze.

Fire in domain A flaming tree caught the attention of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade yesterday morning.

The fire is being treated a suspicious and has been referred to Ashburton Police. The tree, located in the domain on the field near Ashburton College, was found on fire and the fire brigade was notified just after 10.30am. A single crew worked to extinguish the flames which had travelled to the top of the almost 3 metre trunk.

Building front quiet Methven Community Board chairman Dan McLaughlin hopes quiet times on the Methven building front do not continue.

He was commenting on building consent data before the board’s six-weekly meeting yesterday. It showed the Ashburton District Council had issued consents representing $18,500 worth of building work for the month of October, and $3800 worth in September. This compared to $349,082 to $1,036,000 for each month in earlier months this year.

Altogether $4.8 million of consents had been issued up to October for the year. “Hopefully it’s not a trend,” McLaughlin said.

Community relations manager Vincie Billante said cumulatively the value of the work was ahead on last year. Board members needed to look at the big picture, she said.

Registrations needed The organisers of this year’s Christmas Community Lunch have the menu planned, the donations coming and all they need are people to register so they know how many people they need to cater for. Registration forms are available at the Ashburton Guardian and from Community House and Presbyterian Support.

These should be returned to the organising team by December 16.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after a spate of arsons in Hastings. Fires were lit in skip bins behind retail premises overnight from November 28-29. Attending officers spoke to a person of interest during the night and CCTV was analysed the following day.

As a result, the teenager was arrested and charged.

Church rolls out welcome mat

When Ashburton’s Church of the Latter-day Saints threw open its doors to the public on Saturday, people flocked to find out what lay behind those doors in a temple most knew little about.

The Racecourse Road church was under construction for most of this year and welcomed its congregation to their new home about two months ago and an open day where non-members could walk through the complex and talk to church members was always on the drawing board.

And the support for the weekend’s event was overwhelming, said public affairs director Jenafor Rollins.

“It was an absolute success, we were very pleased with the community support and turnout. We were able to explain to people about our temple and to correct some misconceptions,” she said.

Many visitors were surprised when they were told about the church, that it wasn’t a closed place, that it was an open church, Rollins said.

Among those keen to find out a little more about the Latter-

day Saints were employers and school principals whose workforce and student body had a growing number of members of the congregation.

Over the past seven years the church’s membership has grown from about 30 at gatherings to more than 175 and some of that growth was on the back of immigrants from the Pacific Islands, particularly Samoa and Tonga, Rollins said.

The Samoan Church minister was among those attending and during his visit there were discussions about the two churches working together on community and youth ministries and that was a real achievement as in Samoa the two were quite separate, she said.

“Fundamentally our churches are the same; we just do things a little differently.

“I’m so glad people took the time to come and meet us, to find out we’re not scary, we’re just people and we want to work with everyone, work together for the strength of our community.

The new complex includes a church, cultural centre and classroom block.

Gifts donated to families in need In the lead up to Christmas Ashburton has opened its heart to families in need.

When the Cadbury Christmas Truck rolled into town on Saturday, locals turned up with gifts in hand.

Donations were made at New World supermarkets in both Ashburton and Timaru and between the two centres more than 350 gifts were given for clients at Family Works.

Cadbury Country Head James Kane said the company was delighted to be able to partner with New World to bring the Christmas spirit to families going through a difficult time this festive season.

Sheep and beef clouds outlook positive outlook for the dairy and horticulture sectors had kept overall confidence in the agricultural economy high.

“The prospects for the dairy and horticultural sectors are good for 2017 and, while overall confidence has come back slightly from last quarter, it’s still significantly higher than the levels recorded throughout 2015 and early 2016,” she said in a statement.

Moynihan said the main driver of the fall in overall confidence was reduced optimism in the sheep and beef sector sectors, which were both likely to face a tough season.

“Lamb prices have reached the seasonal peak, with the lucrative United Kingdom and European Union Christmas trade now finished, and returns have been around 10 per cent lower than last year,” she said. On the beef side, global prices are under pressure – and the beef schedule was likely to weaken in 2017, Moynihan said.

Auckland property market ‘turning’ The Auckland property market appears to be “turning” after seven years of constant price rises, says the city’s biggest real estate agency.

“Signs the rate of price increase has been slowing have been there for some months but November’s sales data confirms that for the time being at least, Auckland prices have stopped rising,” said Barfoot & Thompson managing director Peter Thompson.

“Both the average sales price and the median price in November were down on those for October,” he said.

“The average sales price in November at $933,130 was down 1.1 per cent on October’s and only 1.1 per cent higher than the average price for the previous three months. “The median price at $850,000 was down 1.7 per cent on October’s and down 0.6 per cent on the median price for the previous three months,” Thompson said.

Strengthening dairy prices have helped keep New Zealand farmer confidence levels at high levels but overall sentiment has been dented by a worsening outlook for sheep and beef, rural lending specialist Rabobank said in its latest rural confidence survey.

The survey, completed in early November, recorded a small decline in sentiment among farmers after a surge higher – driven by stronger dairy prices – in the previous quarter.

The overall net confidence reading fell to plus 25 per cent, down from plus 35 per cent last quarter, but remained at net positive levels for the third consecutive quarter, the bank said.

The survey found the number of farmers expecting the rural economy to improve in the next 12 months had fallen to 39 per cent per cent – down from 48 per cent in the previous quarter – while the number expecting it to worsen rose a percentage point to 14 per cent.

W

hen a prime minister announces he’s stepping down the country might not stop in its tracks, but it certainly pauses.

John Key’s surprise announcement yesterday that he would step down from the country’s top job on Monday would have stunned many but with hindsight, the signs have been there for a while that the pressure of being public property day after day, month after month and year after year were starting to show.

It’s a remarkable innings in modern day politics to stay at the helm for more than three terms, but it’s an even more remarkable achievement to know when the time is right to step aside.

And that’s what Key has done.

He’s shown his mettle as a prime minister who will go down in history for all the right reasons, not least his innate sense of good timing.

If National had won the next election, chances are he’d have been given the nod again as PM, but four terms has to be one term too long in anyone’s books.

Apart from Richard Seddon (13 years) William Massey (12) and Keith Holyoake (11), the 38 prime ministers have usually been fairly short on tenure in the big office.

Only 11 have served more than two terms. It’s not a job with longevity. If you don’t fall out with your own players you fall out with the public or as John Key has done, know that you’ll fall out with your self and your own life if you don’t make the call.

After eight years, the normally suave and unruffled Key has begun to look a little frayed around the edges, a little tired, a little strained. Time in the job was starting to show.

He’s done the right thing for himself, his family and for his party.

In stepping back he’s allowed a reforming of the ranks well out from next year’s election. There’s time for the dust to settle, for new allegiances and alliances to be formed and there’s time for a gentle transition to take place.

Whether he’s on your team or not, no one can criticise Key for not having given his all to the job.

He’s been ours for a long time; now it’s time to return him to his family.

Fencing off waterways to stock is one way to reduce pollution, but there are other causes of pollution.

Local values should drive waterways debate S

tock access can be an emotive issue that sparks strong reactions. It is critical in the debate about water quality and the agricultural sector’s impact.

As part of the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme, I undertook research earlier this year on the topic.

It became strikingly clear during interviews that debate becomes heated not so much over whether stock should be able to access waterways for drinking or to cross to other land – often critical to farming operations – but over community expectations.

Balancing differing values is a delicate and difficult task at times.

problems. Dairy experience is colouring community perceptions on what should be expected of sheep and beef farmers.

A Marlborough case study described in my report noted that water quality in that region is very good.

Most rivers are in the ‘A’ national objectives band, with a few in the ‘B’ band. Yet, Marlborough’s recently notified Environment Plan will prohibit access by intensively farmed stock to waterways, which will capture high country farmers taking in

dairy grazing, and some beef and deer farmers.

Study interviewees frequently cited absence of knowledge. One reflected on his 20 years of work with DOC and Fish & Game in the Top of the South region, noting “dairy farmers I’ve worked with over the last decade want to do the right thing. There has just been a bit of an information deficit”.

Council officers suggested better communication between farm staff, and riparian planting and fencing, would solve things easily. But farmers with experience of planting and fencing braided streams pointed out there were numerous other difficulties.

Critically, what appeared initially to be stock access issues on further examination turned out to be concerns with other

environmental problems, such as protection of bird nesting sites and pest management. Stock access was the proxy for dealing with this, whether effective or not.

While current regulation is focused on fencing off waterways, a scientist interviewed said runoff from stock camping near streams and rivers was a bigger issue.

Sound management practices were needed.

My report concluded we need to develop good frameworks to ensure environmental problems are well defined. Local communities need to be empowered to determine their desired water quality outcomes and to have ongoing input.

dock animals are in, and types of fences required. We are about to determine how we want our landscape to look, and will hand the cost burden to farmers. Have we lost sight of the real issues confronting us?

Fundamentally, the stock access debate is about values. It is unlikely national regulation will address community values held at the local level.

It is local partnerships between community organisations, industry, council and farmers that have the greatest potential to deliver on these community values.

We have to get this right. As one farmer told me: “This is hugely important because it will affect the future of farming as we know it in New Zealand.”

Amy the new Barbie Funny girl Amy Schumer seems to be going from strength to strength after it was revealed she’s currently in talks to be the star of the next Barbie movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Schumer will star as Barbie in their newest live-action movie which is slated for release in 2018. Deadline reported back in April, 2014 that Sony Pictures and Mattel had made a deal to create a new global franchise – a live action comedy built on the world’s top selling doll. The film will try to put a “contemporary spin on beauty, feminism and identity.”

The toy has come under fire recently as thousands of little girls attempt to be like the thin, blonde doll and use her as a role model.

Dakota pipeline blocked The Dakota Access Pipeline will not go ahead at the Standing Rock Indian reservation.

Cheyenne river Sioux Tribal Council chairman Harold Frazier told DailyMail.com that he was “shocked” by the news, which he’d received from JoEllen Darcy, United States Assistant Secretary of the Army.

The camp erupted into cheers as the news spread that the US Army Corps of engineers would not enforce an easement that would have allowed a pipeline to run under Lake Oahe, potentially affecting the tribe’s drinking water and infringing on land rights.

Areas including what was believed to be a native burial site had already been affected.

Faith Spotted Eagle, an elder of the Ihanktonwan tribe, said: “The easement has been denied. We have all come to this gathering being hosted by Mother Earth. I love you all.”

Shailene Woodley, star of the Divergent movies and The Fault in Our Stars, who had previously been arrested while protesting told a huge crowd: ‘We feel so honoured to have been a small part of this movement.”

In a statement, Standing Rock tribal chairman Dave Archambault II said: “Today, the

US Army Corps of engineers announced that it will not be granting the easement to cross Lake Oahe for the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline.

“Instead, the Corps will be undertaking an environmental impact statement to look at possible alternate routes.

“We wholeheartedly support the decision of the administration and commend with the utmost gratitude the courage it took on the part of President Obama, the Army Corps, the Department of Justice and the Department of the Interior to take steps to correct the course of history and do the right thing.

“The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe will forever be grateful to the Obama administration for this historic decision.”

He went on to thank all of those who had given moral, physical and financial support from around the globe, and in particular thanked those who had joined the protest at Standing Rock.

‘We hope that [Energy Transfer Partner CEO] Kelcy Warren, [Governor Jack] Dalrymple and the incoming Trump administration respect this decision and understand the complex process that led us to this point”, he added.

Racist rants on Black Santa A Minnesota mall’s decision to hire its first-ever black Santa has resulted in an appalling racist backlash.

This week Mall of America announced that it had hired professional Father Christmas Larry Jefferson to bring gifts and good cheer to the children of Bloomington and the surrounding area.

But that announcement has been met with disgusting invective online, including some who have spoke openly about “black genocide”, Raw Story reported.

Speaking to WCCO yesterday, Jefferson said that his four-day run at the appointment-only Santa Experience was “no big deal”, explaining: “I’m still Santa, I just happen to be a Santa of Color”.

“Santa is still just Santa. Kids are very innocent, they just love Santa,” added the former army vet, who has been a professional Santa for 17 years.

The reaction from some adults has been anything but innocent, however.

Negative comments on the WCCO website run the gamut from confused to outright hateful.

“Santa is NOT black!! that is a nasty lie and horrible thing to subject children to!” John Armstrong posted. ‘My god people! ..holycow thank god I DO NOT go to malls anymore.”

In brief Italian PM steps down Matteo Renzi, the Italian prime minister, resigned yesterday after losing a constitutional referendum.

He conceded defeat before official results were announced as polls showed he was heading for a heavy defeat. Speaking in Rome, the Italian prime minister conceded defeat after an “extraordinarily clear” referendum result. “My experience of government finishes here,” Mr Renzi told a press conference after the No campaign won what he described as an “extraordinarily clear” victory in the referendum on which he had staked his future.

Trump attacks China

Larry Jefferson is the first black Santa to be hired by the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota – but his appointment has inspired racist remarks.

Even more shocking remarks came from Peter Morgan, who said “Santa is WHITE. BOYCOTT Mall of America. Maybe they should change their name to MALL of RAGHEAD LAND.” And a poster under the name Laquisha Reynolds made a series of vicious remarks, referring to Jefferson’s hiring as “an atrocity” and claiming that “blacks [ate] each other in Africa”.

She also said that if Martin Luther King Jr were to be played by a white man “blacks would try to kill him”.

The Star Tribune shut down its comments on the page about

Jefferson, according to an editor there. The writer of the article later said “We routinely turn off comments on articles involving racial issues”.

Twitter saw complaints from many too. @Brad_D80 replied to a CNN report about Jefferson’s appointment with: “Oh boy racial racist identity politics reporting from CNN.Only you racist lefty types actually care.”

But @HiHoney333 was outright venomous, saying a black Santa shows “there’s nothing too sacred to muddy up” and called for “black genocide”.

The user apparently later deleted that remark.

And user @tlange92 called Jefferson’s hire a “catastrophe” and made a series of racist black Santa jokes, including: “why were black Santas reindeer tired? the reindeer had a tough time pulling his stolen hummer”.

Thankfully, there were plenty of positive remarks to balance out the relentless racism and negativity.

Several people pointed out that St Nicholas was born in the fourth century in what is now Turkey, and was shown to have dark skin.

Twitter user @levantina joked: “White people are offended at a black Santa...y’all gonna be blown away when you find out where Jesus is from...’”

US President-elect Donald Trump has gone on the offensive against China, days after a call with Taiwan’s leader broke tradition and caused a stir among foreign policy experts. Taking to his favourite communication medium, Twitter, Trump said: “Did China ask us if it was OK to devalue their currency (making it hard for our companies to compete), heavily tax our products going into their country (the US doesn’t tax them) or to build a massive military complex in the middle of the South China Sea? I don’t think so!”

Hawking hospitalised British physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking has been hospitalised in Rome for checks after not feeling well but his condition is not believed to be serious, a spokesman said.

Professor Hawking, 74, who was in Rome to attend a conference at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and met Pope Francis on Monday, was taken to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Thursday night.

People ‘beaten to death’ by Fijian authorities Amnesty International has claimed Fiji’s police, corrections officers and military use torture against people accused of crimes or in custody.

In a report, Beating Justice: How Fiji’s Security Forces Get

Away with Torture, Amnesty has detailed beatings, rape, attacks by police dogs and murder.

“An ingrained culture of torture take root among its security forces”, says the Amnesty report.

The report details five cases

where people have been beaten to death in police or military custody in Fiji since the 2006 military coup.

Amnesty says Sakiusa Rabaka, 19, was beaten, sexually assaulted and forced to perform mili-

tary exercises in January 2007. He died from his injuries. The report says eight police officers and one military officer were ultimately convicted over his death and sentenced to prison terms. All were released within a month.

Fifty years after Tasmania’s worst bushfire emergency, which claimed 62 lives, the island state is experiencing virtually an exact repeat of those conditions leading into the high-risk season, a senior fire-fighter says. The ‘Black Tuesday’ fires which raged on February 7, 1967 saw 110 blazes ravage southern Tasmania killing scores of people, leaving more than 900 injured, and destroying entire townships.

‘Fantastic’ entry numbers for NZ dairy awards Hundreds of farmers are expected at FAR’s Chertsey site tomorrow.

Hundreds expected at FAR big crops expo Help with farming compliance issues will be on hand at the Foundation for Arable Research’s big crops expo tomorrow.

More than 600 people are expected to attend the field day, held at FAR’s Chertsey arable site on State Highway 1. CROPS 2016 will be the country’s biggest oneday outdoor agricultural extension event, with irrigation, cultivation and pollination just three of the topics on the programme.

With Canterbury farmers dealing with nutrient compliance issues, FAR has organised a tent where farmers will be able to access information around farm compliance, including data recording.

“FAR, ECan and Irrigation NZ staff will be on hand to discuss issues such as how to develop Farm Environment Plans and the process for resource consent ap-

plications, which, for many Canterbury farms, are due in the next few months,” said FAR CEO Nick Pyke.

The same tent will have information on the Ashburton Groundwater Project, which is monitoring nitrate levels in farm wells, and about how ProductionWise, FAR’s farm recording system can be used to speed up compliance applications.

Pyke said the programme had been designed to ensure that there is something relevant for all cropping farmers, whether they specialise in grain and seed production or fodder crops.

“The programme features 12 research presentations looking at the key issues influencing profitability and sustainability on cropping farms. There will also be demonstrations from our eight Platinum sponsors, Adama, Bal-

lance Agri-Nutrients, BASF, Bayer, DOW, John Deere, PGGW Grain & Seeds and Syngenta. Gold and Silver sponsors will also be on site for attendees to visit throughout the day. These companies add value to CROPS by featuring new products, cultivars, technology and machinery, specifically for cropping farmers.”

International guest speaker this year is Extension Specialist Nicole Anderson from Oregon State University, who will outline some of the issues being faced by seed producers in Oregon and how they match up to and differ from those being faced by growers here.

“Anderson is well known to New Zealand seed researchers and also to many seed growers who have met her on previous trips.”

The field day runs from 9am until 5.30pm and concludes with dinner.

A total of 424 entries have been received in the 2017 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards, a result general manager Chris Keeping says is fantastic given the economic climate in the industry over the past few years.

“To achieve this number of entries, on the back of a low payout for the second year in a row, is a superb result and we are pleased with the high calibre of entries across the three competitions,” Keeping said.

There are 103 entered in the Share Farmer of the Year competition, 170 entered in the Dairy Manager of the Year competition and 151 entered in the Dairy Trainee of the Year competition.

Keeping said the regions had worked hard to attract the entries and are rapt with the quality of entrants and that all three competitions will be run in all 11 regions.

“We are lucky to have enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers who are at the heart of the regional competitions.

“The regional managers and their committees have all

worked incredibly hard over the past six weeks to ensure as many people as possible have the chance to challenge themselves, earn a regional or national title and have a chance to share in the substantial regional and national prize pools.”

Entrants will first compete in one of 11 regional competitions being held throughout the country in February and March next year.

The 33 winners of those competitions will progress to the national finals in May next year.

The regional managers for the Canterbury/North Otago competition are Justin and Melissa Slattery of Culverden. They will be organising an entrant and sponsor event at the Hotel Ashburton on January 10.

Judging for the dairy trainee of the year begins first on February 14, with finalists in all three categories decided after another round of judging ending March 10.

The regional winners will be announced at a function on March 22.

Baleage volumes are strong as farmers harvest the surplus feed, some to boost supplement reserves, others because stock shortages for grazing options are limited and this is the only option.

Growing use of beef bulls, mainly hereford, is being seen for the non-replacement side of the dairy herd, as demand grows for dairy beef bulls and heifers for finishing.

The $6 forecast by Fonterra has been followed by Synlait, but Westland and Open Country lag behind by 25-50c/kg ms, as Chinese milk powder imports lift by 15 per cent as their stocks get low.

The Dutch look to a big reduction of dairy cow numbers to meet the EU phosphate and nitrogen leaching obligations from 2017, and this could be a stark warning for NZ farmers how environmental regulations could restrict farm production in the future.

The EU sells 22,500 tonnes of skim milk powder out of its intervention stocks and the release of this product may put a handbrake on future price increases.

The Westland Milk Products AGM was filled with a very big crowd of angry shareholders disappointed in the poor performance of their company. They listened as the new leadership reported confidence in the strategy but stated there is no shortterm fix to the company’s present position.

The wool price indicators did lift however on last week’s NI sale, and merino wools continue to shine with a high of 1648c/kg not exceeded since 2012, on the back of a very strong Melbourne sale.

Beef Another mainly stable week for beef schedules as chilled markets are all short of product, and Asian demand remains strong.

Beef farmers are still struggling in the US, with very cheaply priced poultry and pork and high domestic cattle kills ruling the market, but low processing numbers in NZ have minimised the effect here.

Weaner dairy bulls are selling for $4/kg/lwt plus in the province well below NI returns, but saleyard prime steers are trading about 20c/kg lwt stronger in the south.

Deer

Lamb Weaning is now well under way and returns off the early drafts continue to disappoint even for heavy lambs.

The plentiful feed has kept processing volumes low and kept schedules from adjusting down as fast as early market indications suggested they would.

There are however just some small signs of recovery, led by lifting demand in most markets except the UK, and slow production out of Australia.

The summer venison schedule fall seems to be stalling as the frozen negotiations close and with good demand keeping prices strong, and reports of successful sales of chilled product off season lows may be ahead of last year.

The velvet market has reached an impasse with buyers wanting a 20 per cent reduction, while sellers are prepared to ease about 10 per cent, to reflect the negative currency movements.

Buyers have taken advantage of this, and are offering $100-$105/kg to those who need a quick sale.

■ Heat the oil in a large heavy-based saucepan or deep frying pan and sauté the onion, garlic and ginger for 2 minutes until softened and fragrant. Add the spices and cook a further 2 minutes stirring until combined. Add the diced chicken and potatoes and toss well to combine.

■ Add the stock and sauce and simmer for 30-40 minutes until the potatoes are tender and chicken cooked. Combine the cornflour and water and stir into the curry. Simmer 1 minute then add the green beans and cook until tender and bright green.

■ Serve over white rice with fresh coriander to garnish.

An editor’s Christmas at war

t Ashburton Museum we are proud purveyors of stories past. World War One, known at the time as the Great War, was a time of unparalleled suffering and loss of life.

We are all familiar with the stories of the brave men from the battlefields of Europe, but lesser known are the tales of those at the home front, who experienced the war in totally different ways.

One unique lens we can use to see what the people at home felt, are the Christmas messages authored by Ashburton Guardian editor, Thomas David Taylor. We can look back at changes in the way he approached his annual Christmas message over the span of the war fought over 100 years ago.

A hopeful Christmas We start the story on December 24, 1914. The war has just begun and Mr Taylor writes a decidedly upbeat and hopeful Christmas editorial, wishing his readers a “bright and happy Christmas and a prosperous new year”.

He also toes the official government line. He writes patriotically of how, “The war is progressing along the lines that the Allies’ military leaders planned it should follow, and it is merely a matter of time – almost any day during the coming months that may see its achievement – when the enemy in France and Belgium will be hunted across the Rhine”. Mr Taylor’s thoughts were widespread at the time, as the phrase ‘over by Christmas’ came in to the popular vernacular.

Mr Taylor encouraged readers to make Christmas brighter and infuse it with more joyousness than usual. He insisted that, “we in this distant portion of the empire are enjoying unexampled prosperity and freedom from the dreadful effects of wars ...

Trade and industries at home and throughout the empire are flourishing. And in our own Dominion there is every prospect of a good harvest and record exports during this coming season”.

On the same page is a section dedicated to the ‘tasteful’ Christmas decorations at the Ashburton Hospital. These consisted of flowers, evergreens and Chinese lanterns. All inpatients were given a stocking, presents and a good Christmas meal of poultry – a luxury at the time.

For the rest of the community it was business as usual with a film screening at His Majesty’s Theatre, a tennis tournament in the domain and an Ashburton bowling club tournament on the green.

Christmas comfort 1915 1915’s Christmas message brims with hope for peace by the next Christmas but is tinged with the sadness of those who have already lost their lives. Mr Taylor tries to comfort those who have already lost loved ones by writing, “Christmas will be chastened with the most sorrowful recollections of dear ones who have passed forever from the pale of mundane affairs. But the sorrow will be less acute because of the noble cause for which the sacrifices have been

Above – The linotype room with staff from the Ashburton Guardian, 1910. made, and if in their grief the bereaved ones can in time, think impersonally of their losses, they may find consolation in the philosophy that teaches that though Nature is careless of a single life she is jealous in the preservation of the race”.

Mr Taylor then wishes his readers a “pleasant and profitable Christmas and an Enjoyable New Year”. There is no further mention of the festive hospital or Christmas sporting activities, his thoughts have turned elsewhere.

Advertising too, is more subdued and about more practical gifts, such as clothes.

Christmas misery

By December 23, 1916, the world has slumped into its third Christmas at war. Mr Taylor’s editorial writes about the war’s progress in a despondent tone, with little mention of Christmas.

The abject horror of what is happening in the world seeps through the lines on the page, “Two new belligerents – Italy and Romania – have since that time become involved in the terrible maelstrom of shot and shell and flashing bayonets. It is a mockery, under such conditions to speak of the message of peace and goodwill. The best we can hope for is a speedy termination of the war and a peace under conditions that will for centuries prevent a repetition of the misery, bloodshed and awful waste of human effort which the world has witnessed for nearly 30 months.”

A determined Christmas December 24, 1917, the fourth Christmas editorial at war. The toll of the bloody and drawn-out war is expressed in a change in

Mr Taylor’s focus and wording. He seems to have moved from horror to numbness and gritted determination. As he writes, “[unlike] 1914 and 1915 the world has become accustomed to the stupendous changes that have taken place in our customs and habits”.

Mr Taylor was now talking about how the world has become accustomed to war. Significantly, he writes this message just weeks after the dreadful Battle of Passchendaele (July 31 to November 10, 1917), where on October 12, New Zealand had suffered its greatest loss of life on any one day in its history.

Mr Taylor patriotically continued, “the present xmas season finds the British Empire … united and … resolute in determination to crush the German Military menace”.

He closes his final Christmas editorial with, “There appears to be a general agreement that there can be no peace till at least the middle of 1919, but it is better to continue fighting for a decade in order to completely overthrow the Germans, than to give up now because of the present sacrifices the war is entailing, and thus ensure a harvest of sorrow for our children’s children”.

The following year his hope would be fulfilled – at last a peaceful Christmas to celebrate.

In brief Speedster cramped up New ODI bowler Lockie Ferguson found himself welcomed to a special club after his entry to international cricket. The speedster took a wicket in his first over, but also copped some punishment from Australia’s batsmen during the hosts’ 68-run win at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

His nine overs cost 73 and he suffered a bout of cramp, which according to coach Mike Hesson he’d never suffered before. But the big positive was his pace.

Ferguson was quickly up to 150kmh, and five of his deliveries in his second over reached that benchmark point.

Tough start to cup campaign

Mid Canterbury’s cricketers are licking their wounds after losing by an innings and 45 runs in their two-day game against South Canterbury in the weekend.

The first innings for Mid Canterbury in the Hawke Cup did not start well as they won the toss and chose to bat first at the Ashburton Domain Oval, but were quickly dismissed for 79 runs in the 48th over.

Opener James Southby topscored for the home side with 17 off 57 balls.

South Canterbury came in to bat and things did not start well for them as Mid Canterbury’s Bevan Ravenscroft hit the pads of opener Adam Beck third ball of the innings to dismiss him for a duck.

However, strong third fourth and fifth partnerships steadied the innings for South Canterbury.

South Canterbury’s Prabodha Athavidu struck a solid 80 off 183 balls to help his side reach 211 from 71 overs but Mid Canterbury bounced back as Jason Morrison and Kieran Hunt took the last six wickets for four runs.

Mid Canterbury were 132 runs behind and had a mountain to climb if they were to stay in the match.

They battled for just over 32 overs before they were dismissed for 87 all out.

Ryan Cockburn and Des Kruger were the only batsmen to show resistance with their 30 and 32 against South Canterbury’s Stanley Mair who bagged seven wickets from 18 runs.

South Canterbury were happy to get their revenge after Mid Canterbury claimed the Ron Biggar Trophy in their 28-run win last month.

Mid Canterbury will continue their Hawke Cup efforts next month.

Australian skipper Steve Smith insists Glenn Maxwell remains available for the second onedayer against New Zealand and he wasn’t demoted to carrying the water because of his loose lips.

Maxwell was controversially looked over for the Chappell-Hadlee series opener at the SCG on Sunday, just three days after his public criticism of Matthew Wade. There was an awkward moment when Maxwell was made to run out the water to Wade during the wicketkeeper’s slashing of 38 off 22.

Rennie linked to Boks Dave Rennie has emerged as a shock candidate to become coach of the Springboks. Leading South African news outlet Rapport is reporting that South African Rugby is considering Rennie to replace current coach Allister Coetzee who has overseen the worst Springbok season in history. Coetzee is already on record as saying he expects to be sacked after losing nine tests this year. According to Rapport, South African officials have already begun work behind the scenes to secure Rennie.

Poor fielding effort costs Black Caps New Zealand’s clumsy effort in the field opened the door for Australia to claim first blood in the one-day series, in-form opener Martin Guptill says.

Loose bowling, spilled chances and imprecise use of their reviews helped the hosts reach 325 at the SCG on Sunday, leaving the Black Caps with a tall order.

Guptill’s masterful 114 off 102 balls kept the game in the balance until his dismissal in the 33rd over, triggering a slump to 256 all out.

Australia wouldn’t have envisaged a 68-run win when they were reduced to 92-4 but New Zealand’s profligacy in the field helped them clamber back.

Captain Steve Smith dominated the recovery with a ground ODI record 164, supported by Travis Head (52) and Matthew Wade (38).

“We probably didn’t bowl as well as we could have in the middle stages and at the end,” Guptill said.

“It is a bit disappointing.

“We know we’re better than that. We’re going to do our best in a couple of days if we have them

in that situation again to really put the foot down.”

Despite satisfaction at reaching an 11th ODI century, Guptill was disappointed not to complete the job. None of his teammates passed 50.

Guptill will be a key wicket for game two of the three-match series at Canberra’s Manuka Oval today.

Dropped from the test squad following the tour of India, the free-hitting opener has scored tons in his last three innings.

He reached 128 not out and 151 in the Plunket Shield for Auckland.

He has northern features on the programmes of three members of his Awapuni stable, the exciting youngster Hard Merchandize, the highly-regarded three-year-old Leading Role and the consistent short course performer Miss Appleton.

“The Karaka Million is the main goal for Hard Merchandize,” said Vile, who celebrated a winning hat-trick at Trentham on Saturday with Jacksstar, Leading Role and Abbey Road.

“He’ll have a run over 1100 metres here at Awapuni on December 17 and then we’ll give him a look around Ellerslie before the Million.

“He’s quite professional and he won’t have any problems going right-handed.”

The Oaks Stud’s Darci Brahma three-yearold won for the second time in her three start career when she beat the older horses at Trentham on Saturday. “I really love this filly,” trainer Shaune Ritchie said.

“I don’t know if she’s as good as Zurella, but she has got a better attitude. We were keen to take her to Trentham as we think she’s an Oaks filly so we’ll make a plan of attack for that.”

Ellis claims overdue victory Brian Ellis recorded his first victory after many years of trying in Tinwald Cycling Club’s 48 km handicap event around the Grahams Road block on Sunday.

With a large field exceeding 60 riders, there were plenty of chances.

Ellis and his co-markers worked hard to keep the chasing riders at bay before he and Kerry Clough made the decisive break, riding clear of the group, and chasing down the front marker in the shadow of the finish line.

Ellis had the final say in the sprint to take the spoils, with Kerry Clough deservedly securing second place after producing his best performance of the season.

Limit rider Helen Bancroft bravely held on to claim the final podium position.

Meanwhile back in the field the scratch markers were fighting out for fastest time and the honour of lifting the Aaron Stewart Me-

morial Trophy for the first time.

It was his friend and fellow bike rider Darryl Kircher, who found the line the strongest to claim the honours, riding the distance in 66 minutes 12 seconds.

Stu Lowe and Tony Ward took second and third time.

The juniors competed over 16km.

Maddi Lowry had a super race to find the front and finish strongly to take the win. Lily Davidson continued her good season with a solid second place.

Ethan Titheridge stormed into third and in doing so also took second fastest time honours.

Oliver Davidson produced a great ride off scratch to take fourth spot and fastest time honours, covering the course in 25.55.

Matt Clough and Jenna Borthwick rounded out the top six.

Next week the club travels to Chertsey to contest a 54km handicap event.

Top start for U17s Mid Canterbury Cricket’s under 17 rep team got off to a winning start on the first day of their tournament at Mandeville, near Christchurch, yesterday beating Christchurch Metro Red in the first of two T20s for the day. Mid Canterbury made 119-7 in its 20 overs (Will Smith 37) and contained Metro to 103-7 (Oscar Redfern 4-12 and Will Tod 3-25), winning by 16 runs. In their second game against South Canterbury, Mid Canterbury was chasing a target of 105 and worked steadily away, Ben Innes top scoring with 33. Oscar Redfern’s ball to the boundary, with an over to spare, won it for Mid Canterbury, who finished 106-4.

Rally teams’ rest stop Some of the toughest race cars and crews in the country were in Methven on Sunday for a pit stop and a quick lunch before they hit the road in the final leg of this year’s NZ Silver Fern Rally.

This year’s rally saw around 50 cars battling it out on some of New Zealand’s toughest gravel roads.

The rally started in Christchurch on November 27 and finished yesterday.

Darius Boyd has been named the Ron McAuliffe Medal winner as Queensland’s State of Origin player of the year. And Brisbane great Willie Carne believes Boyd should also receive another honour - the Broncos’ captaincy. Boyd, 29, was a revelation when he stepped up in the Maroons’ No.1 jersey for the first time in 2016 in the absence of injured Billy Slater. Bring it on, says Hughie Hughie Fury, the cousin of former heavyweight champion Tyson, has announced he is ready to take on the winner of the Joseph Parker v Andy Ruiz Jr title fight. The 22-yearold Hughie Fury, the son of Tyson’s trainer Peter, is ranked fifth by the WBO and is likely to be first cab off the rank in terms of a mandatory challenger for either Parker or Ruiz Jr. Parker takes on Ruiz Jr at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Saturday. The undefeated Hughie has fought 20 times as a professional since turning to the paid ranks in 2013. The decision by fellow Briton David Haye to fight cruiserweight champion Tony Bellow in a bigmoney fight has opened the way for Fury’s chance.

Ernie Merrick quits Coach Ernie Merrick has quit struggling A-League club Wellington Phoenix.

Merrick told players of his decision after Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Adelaide United. Wellington sit last on the ladder with two wins and six losses from their eight games this season and Merrick said he’d taken the team as far as he could. “I take full responsibility for thte position the team is currently in,” he said. “I feel that I have not performed well enough as head coach, as we have a very strong squad that should be higher up the table.” With a run of home games looming, beginning on Saturday against Central Coast Mariners in Hamilton, Merrick said the time was right for him to step aside.

BY MATT MARKHAM Simon Thomas is putting a lot of the credit for his recall into the New Zealand Indoor Bowls side down to a decision to ply his trade in the Ashburton district over the past season.

The Christchurch-based 41-year-old was named in the Mat Blacks’ squad to face Australia in the Henselite Trophy in Sydney next May after making himself unavailable the last time the two sides met in the biennial event.

It will be the seventh time he has worn the silver fern – an honour that he felt two years ago, he would probably never experience again.

“Last time I made the New Zealand team we won 55-11 and I thought that was it, I’d reached

my pinnacle and I could retire from the international side on a real high,” Thomas said.

“But then when the team was named for the next test and I saw everyone getting excited about it I got a bit of the bug back myself and wanted to be back in there.”

Playing out of the Canterbury region at that point, Thomas set out with a plan to get back into the squad for the 2017 test and made a few changes to both his mindset and how he approached the game.

“I think I was taking things a little bit for granted to be honest.

“I was going through the motions and expecting things to happen.

“Whereas last week I was more nervous leading up to the

team naming than I ever have been before so it was a new experience.

“I made the decision to play for Ashburton this year because I saw some real potential in some of the Ashburton players and felt it would be the best for me personally to be playing around and with some of the players from down there.

“I thought we could win a Welch Trophy but unfortunately we just missed out on that and finished second, but I’ve got no doubt that playing in Ashburton has been a big factor in making my way back into the the team.”

Thomas will play skip in both the men’s fours and men’s triples for the Mat Blacks in May and be looking to add to the nine Australasian medals he already

holds from his previous six appearances in the black blazer.

He has medals from wins in the men’s four in 2003, 2005, 2007 and the mixed (6-bowl) pairs in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2013 and the mixed fours in 2009 and 2011.

“I’m looking forward to it already, it’s a well balanced squad with some incredible bowlers and there’s a few new faces in there that I haven’t played with before which will be a great experience.”

The Mat Blacks squad will get together in April for a weekend long training camp ahead of the May fixture.

It was a case of close again, but no cigar for fellow Ashburton bowler Michael Lawson.

He was named as the men’s reserve for the fourth time.
