Roading crews still on standby Roading crews have been on high alert for the past three nights as they wait for the forecast heavy snows to hit the Mid Canterbury high country.

And they’re still waiting for the early morning call-out to clear roads.

On both Thursday and Friday mornings Fulton Hogan crews were out early, clearing the light fall from roads in and around the Methven area. And last night they were on the same alert, anticipating this morning the overnight falls might be heavier, said manager Darcy Roberts.

The snow predictions have also put the Mid Canterbury Rural Trust on alert. This organisation and its volunteers are the farmers’ lifeline during heavy snow events, but this time while they’ve had plenty of offers of help, they’ve had no calls for assistance, said trust member Sue Baird.

“At the moment we’re keeping a watching brief on things.

We spoke to farmers in the back country last night and at that stage they didn’t see too many problems,” she said.

Mid Canterbury schools took a wait-and-see approach yesterday when dealing with the

snow. Mayfield School delayed opening until 10am, but principal Richard Kidd said snow that was on the ground at 7am had melted and the school opened, though not all students attended. Buses did not run.

Mt Somers Springburn also opened, as did Carew, with procedures in place if the snow flurries throughout the day turned into something more concerning.

Otherwise students made the most of it, including those on Mt Hutt as part of scheduled ski programmes.

The skifield received nearly 40cm of new snow and staff said it has transformed the mountain.

Powder skiing and riding both on and off trail was excellent, and grooming teams opened new trails. Cold temperatures overnight caused ice which delayed the operation of the Summit Six chairlift; temperatures remained very cold throughout the day.

Police are reminding motorists to take extra care. Road conditions may be treacherous so motorists are being urged to drive to the conditions, or don’t drive at all if they don’t feel safe.

Rural schools to get recycling depots

Fairton School has joined forces with the Ashburton District Council for a community recycling depot.

The students, who are studying recycling this term, say it could be modelled on the depot that services the Mt Somers community.

Principal Rebekah Clement said the students had just begun a technology topic with the theme “pay now, or pay later” with the main objective to understand how recycled products could be used to give a cleaner, greener future.

“We’re looking at what we can

do today to help our tomorrow.

We’re going to be doing lots of making and doing, using recycled materials, we’ve already started by making garden art and pot plant holders using bottles.”

She said the idea for the depot came about during a waste education session run by recycling educator Sheryl Stivens.

The school’s own recycling was currently taken by a volunteer to Ashburton’s recycling centre.

“It’s all great timing and we’re really hoping the depot will go ahead, as it fits with our curriculum but also serve our local community.”

School had also asked to be part of a community recycling depot for its area and council was working with both schools to make it happen.

The Fairton depot would be on council land next to the school and be up and running by the end of the year. It would include bins for cardboard and plastic and three skips for different coloured glass.

He said rural schools were ideal spots for recycling depots as they were a central point in their communities. “ A lot of people outside the village bring their kids in for school or sport, so it is a natural focal point.”

Man found on boat in Nelson identified The victim of a suspicious death on a Nelson boat was a man of European descent, police say.

However, police would not release any further details of who he was or how he died during a

media briefing yesterday.

Detective Inspector Paul Borrell, Tasman District crime manager, briefed media near the site of the incident.

He said they would not release

the man’s name until a post-mortem examination is completed this afternoon.

Day in the snow at Mount Somers

The snow was out to play in Mount Somers yesterday and so came the children.

The area received about five centimetres of snow and despite some rain coming through around midday the snow managed to stick around.

Students of Mt Somers Springburn School, of which only about half of the 96 kids managed to get to school, spent time in the morning making a huge snowball in the field or riding on the school sled.

Teacher Ginny Neal said yesterday was the second day of snow after they managed to get a little bit on Thursday morning.

The year zero to one teacher said for health and safety reasons, only the students who came to school in full wet weather gear could play in the snow.

The snow proved to be too good of an attraction to miss for Rakaia family Libby and Aaron Chambers and their two sons Will, 4, and Lachie, 2.

Ms Chambers said they saw some people posting about the snow on Facebook and they decided to drive up to have a look.

However, local wildlife was less than impressed with what winter had to say.

Cows, sheep and ponies huddled next to anything and everything they could to get out of the snow.

Guilty verdict in neglect case A daughter accused of letting her elderly mother starve to death has been found guilty of manslaughter.

Ena Lai Dung, 76, was discovered in bed on a tarpaulin, lying in her own excrement, naked from the waist down, surrounded by flies, at a South Auckland address where she was a boarder, when emergency services were called on January 16 last year.

She weighed just 29kg when she died.

Her daughter Cindy Melissa Taylor, 43, has been on trial before the High Court at Auckland charged with her manslaughter.

She denied failing to provide her mother with the necessary care to keep her alive.

Luana Roberta Taylor, 56, and her husband Brian Frank Taylor, 62 – not related to the other defendant – lived in the same house in Clendon Park and denied failing to protect a vulnerable adult.

The jury yesterday found Cindy Taylor guilty of manslaughter, as well as two charges of dishonestly using a document.

They also found both Brian and Luana Taylor guilty of failing to protect a vulnerable adult.

The court earlier heard from

a paramedic who found Dung lying dead, covered in her own excrement, who described her as looking like a “scarecrow”.

One paramedic said there was an obvious smell of ammonia and stale urine when he entered the house and met the three defendants in the front room.

Pathologist Dr Fintan Garavan told the court Dung had no body fat when he examined her.

“I don’t think you need to be a qualified doctor to appreciate that’s a very thin, emaciated lady,” he told jurors as they studied photos of Dung.

The jurors were shown “dis-

turbing” pictures during the trial.

The pathologist detailed areas of the skin that had been chemically burned while Dung lay in her own urine and faeces.

He said he was unable to give a scientific measure of the pain Dung would have suffered, but said common sense needed to prevail.

“It’s not rocket science, these are not very good things to happen to your body,” he told the court.

Justice Edwin Wylie summed up the case to the jury on Friday.

Japanese students teach traditional arts, crafts

Hampstead School had special guest teachers in their classrooms yesterday.

The students visiting Ashburton from Tokorozawa-Kita High School in Japan spent the morning teaching the Hampstead School children Japanese arts and crafts.

They also taught the children why the crafts are important to the Japanese culture.

The children of Room 8 made carp shaped streamers and learnt about why they are used.

Carp shaped streamers, or koinobori in Japanese, are flown on May 15, which is the Japanese Children’s Day. The koi-nobiri are used to symbolise strength and courage and also represent the family, with the father as the top koi, the mother as the second and the children underneath.

There is also a collection of rainbow coloured streamers to represent the river that carried the family.

Powder in envelope Residents of a Hamilton home have been decontaminated after white powder “sprayed out” of an envelope delivered there.

Fire crews were sent to a house in Inverness Avenue, Hamilton shortly before 1pm. Fire Service spokesman Scott Osmond said the service was called after a suspicious envelope was found.

“Someone opened an envelope in a house and some white powder sprayed out of it,” he said. - NZME

The students have been in Ashburton since July 27 and have been staying with host families.

An elderly woman involved in a car crash in Rangiora yesterday has died. The 85-year-old was initially taken to hospital in a critical condition following the crash on Flaxton Road just before 11.30am.

Police said just before 4pm yesterday she had since died from her injuries.

Mums latch on to World Breastfeeding Week

Ashburton Baptist Church was overrun with mums and breastfeeding babies yesterday for the 12th annual Big Latch On. There were more than 35 mums at the event and nearly double the amount of babies, ranging from two weeks old to 31 months old.

Breastfeeding peer supporter and one of the organisers of the Big Latch On 2016, Anthea Moore, said the peer support group is not just for mums that are already breastfeeding.

“It’s a really supportive environment and it’s really good for pregnant women to come in and pick up some techniques.

“Even if they aren’t consciously doing it, they have picked up skills that will help them when baby is born,” she said.

The Ashburton mums joined

thousands of others from different cultures and walks of life who all latched on at 10.30am.

There were also spot prizes for the mums with the oldest baby still breastfeeding, the youngest baby in the room, as well as for the mums who donated milk to NICU or to babies in need and for the mum who had breast-fed for the longest cumulative time.

One of the mums was met with cheers when she told the group she is tandem feeding her babies.

World Breastfeeding Week began on August1 and the last day is August 8.

Man charged with murdering farmer A man has appeared in Kaitaia District Court charged with the murder of a Far North farmer.

The arrested man was granted interim name suppression when he appeared before Judge Keith de Ridder, charged with murder.

The charge comes after police were called to a farm just north of Te Kao shortly before 11pm on Thursday, after reports a man was badly injured.

When they arrived, they found the 77-year-old had died from knife wounds.

Far North District Council Te Hiku ward councillor David Collard said the Far North’s reputation was being tarnished by highly-

publicised violence in the community, including two other homicides since December 31, 2015.

“The media portrays it as violence all the time, but I don’t see that getting around the place. It seems the violence is hidden – it’s very sad and it becomes an indictment on all the good people who live here,” Cr Collard said.

Mr Collard said the community surrounding Te Kao was “wonderful”.

“I actually got stuck in a vehicle at Te Kao recently and the local people went out of their way to help me. They’re great people up there ... And for them to be condemned by the actions of a violent

minority is just not fair,” he said.

Police announced yesterday they were rushing extra officers to the Far North to help deal with the spate of homicides and other violent offences there.

Commissioner Mike Bush announced four new staff for the region where at least four homicides have been committed this year.

There have also been a number of violent assaults and robberies - including three knife attacks in Kaitaia in one week of July.

However, the officers will just be relocated from elsewhere in New Zealand - meaning there will be fewer officers in other regions.

Stabbed woman was screaming for help A woman with stab wounds ran onto the road carrying a baby and screaming for help yesterday, a witness has described.

Police were still at a house on Willis Road, Papakura late yesterday after a stabbing there about 12.25pm.

Daljinder Pangly said he was outside a nearby dairy when he saw an Asian woman in her 30s running towards him screaming for help and carrying a baby.

“She just ran out and was asking for help and I was outside the shop and I just ran to her and got the baby from her arms.

“She was very badly injured but the baby was fine.”

He said the woman had stab wounds on her face, head, hands and back, but the baby was uninjured.

“She was kind of unconscious but she was responding until

the ambulance arrived, so we just kept talking to her.”

Pangly said other bystanders also rushed to the woman and used nappies from the dairy to try to stem the bleeding.

“I held the baby from her first, then someone else took the baby from me and I was helping the lady. Two or three ladies came and were helping, too.”

Police said the 31-year-old woman was taken to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition. Her condition was later downgraded to serious and her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 16-year-old boy was also taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

The scene was cordoned off for a time and motorists were asked to avoid the area. - NZME

Self defence class for women

A group of Ashburton women have been taught basic self defence thanks to a grant from Advance Ashburton.

The 13-strong group of women received training on self defence as well as training on their mindset.

The course was taught at the Talbot Security Group building and the trainer was Talbot Security Group owner Dean Talbot.

Mr Talbot said it was a good afternoon and all the participants gained some knowledge.

He said the workshop was spilt into two parts, a session on mindset and a session dedicated to the physical aspect.

The mindset aspect is almost as important as the physical side as people need to be in the headspace to defend themselves.

“If they don’t have the mindset then nothing works.

“We teach them that the number one priority is them,” he said.

Mr Talbot said on the physical session they taught the group a few practical skills like grapples and holds.

Accountants’ world an evolving one

The world of the chartered accountant is changing away from that of bean counter to a new role as business partners for their clients.

Thursday night those business partners gathered in Ashburton to honour their own at the MidSouth Canterbury branch of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand presidential and awards dinner.

NZ Country Head Kirsten Patterson is a strong advocate for the changing role of accountants describing them as the All Blacks of the business world.

And she should know. Prior to taking up her current role with the accountants’ organisation, she worked for the New Zealand Rugby Union for nine years as general manager, corporate services.

“That meant I did everything that was off-field, none of the exciting, sexy stuff,” she said.

She might lead the country’s accountants’ organisation but her background is in law, rather than commerce.

Like law, the gender balance among the accounting fraternity

is changing, with 41 per cent of chartered accountants now female.

The growth in female numbers was borne out on Thursday night at the awards dinner where seven of the nine certificates presented to newly qualified chartered accountants were presented to

women.

“The majority of graduates coming through both law and commerce degrees now are women and that’s fantastic, they’re professions that can lead to many career opportunities and openings.”

Gone are the days where ac-

countants were perceived as middle aged beanies; today accountants were found in top positions across a range of careers, Ms Patterson said.

Technology had changed the world of the accountant – for the better, she said.

“A lot of people said things like MYOB would mean the death of accounting, but what they did was take over the book-keeping. New software has allowed accountants to move to a higher level of business advisory services.”

Far from becoming a dying profession, the number of accountants graduating was increasing, Ms Patterson said.

Hope for baby orca’s survival

The gift that could save lives When the Lions Club of Ashburton had a little spare money in their charitable trust account, they looked for a good cause on which to spend that money.

And that cause was donating a defibrillator to the Ashburton Golf Club.

There is a strong link between the Lions and the club as use of the course is given free of charge to the Lions each year for its charity golf tournament.

A baby orca is now at home swimming around a 6m wide Para pool on a council reserve overlooking the Tauranga harbour.

On Wednesday the calf, which has been stranded in Bay waters for 21 days, was distressed and almost catatonic when experts decided to move him to a land-based pool.

Once in the sea-water-filled pool, the calf was stabilised and fed a hydrating mixture of warm water and glucose.

As any mum and dad of a young baby would understand, it was a big moment when he pooped, volunteer Kit Wilson said.

“It means his metabolism is still working, his intestines are still working. It means there is a chance.”

Around midnight the orca was tube fed.

“Not with orca milk, as we don’t have any handy, but with a special mixture,” Wilson said.

Orca Research Trust founder Dr Ingrid Visser said the orca was in intensive care and doing 10 times better than he was 24 hours ago.

fish – a “fish smoothie”.

“He’s really alert, he’s watching people and you can see if you step away from him he comes back because he wants to re-engage,” she said.

Dr Visser was speaking to the Bay of Plenty Times while standing in the pool structure rubbing the whale’s tummy and scratching his back.

More experts from the United States flew in this week, bringing the expert rescue and rehabilitation team up to seven, evenly split between New Zealanders and Americans.

It was unknown how long the calf would be kept in the pool.

“It’s completely up to him. At this stage we are cautiously optimistic and we’re moving forward as fast as we can because obviously the faster we can get him rehabilitated the quicker we can get him back out with wild orca.”

Visser said the team was aware a pod of orcas had been spotted in Tauranga Harbour two days ago but they did not know if it was his family pod. A pod of orcas was also spotted on Thursday near Omanu beach.

Cafe named NZ’s Fawlty Towers

BY KURT BAYER It’s got some of the worst reviews of any cafe in the country and has been called New Zealand’s own Fawlty Towers.

Visitors to Springfield Store & Cafe at the base of the Southern Alps on the western fringe of the Canterbury Plains have little positive to say about their experiences.

On travel review website, Trip Advisor, it has been rated 27 times, and 18 graded Springfield Cafe as “terrible”.

They complain about the grumpy, “rude” staff and liken it to Fawlty Towers, the classic British sitcom about a badly run hotel.

Various negative encounters include being abused over tomato sauce or for asking for directions and featuring the “rudest woman in New Zealand”.

One reviewer said, “We asked if this cafe sold the local newspaper and were told that it was a cafe not a newspaper shop.”

But despite the overwhelmingly bad reviews, when I popped in today I enjoyed a pleasant, ordinary cafe experience.

The man behind the counter chatted cheerily about the prospect of the winter’s first snow as he made my flat white.

Disgruntled customers have likened Springfield Store & Cafe to Fawlty Towers, a dysfunctional hotel featured in a classic British sitcom.

When I asked for a powerpoint to plug in my laptop, he happily pointed me to one.

As I sat there working, sipping my coffee and nibbling on my coffee cake (cream cheese icing to cake ratio on the meagre side), we chatted more about

pending snow and was told how a local beekeeper predicted the cold snap last week when his bees finally shut up shop for the season.

Signs assured me the “Big Breakfast” was “a real good feed!” and of proper tongs eti-

quette when lifting food from the self-serve cabinets.

It was chilly, but when I went to the car to retrieve my jacket, and sleety snow flakes flecked my head, the owner appeared to crank the heater.

Customers who came and

went got the same polite, chatty, friendly service that I did.

Maybe it was the prospect of snow, and a pick-up in ski and winter sports trade, but the staff were smiling, happy today.

And I had a fine time. Three stars. Average.

AK-47, P, cannabis and $700k found in drugs bust P, cannabis, Ecstasy, $700,000 cash, an AK-47, two other firearms and five cars were found by police in searches in Manawatu recently.

Officers searched homes and storage facilities in Palmerston North, Feilding and Ashhurst as part of Operation Zippo, targeting organised crime in the area.

Detective Sergeant Dave Thompson said 13 people have been arrested so far – with four people arrested just on Thursday.

He said a specialist drugs dog was used in the searches, which found 580g of methamphetamine, 1.2kg of MDMA, 10kg of cannabis plants, 175g of hashish, 300ml of Fantasy, three guns including an AK-47 and $699,000 in cash.

Five cars, including European models, were also recovered.

Thompson said that Thursdayday’s searches, which netted a large amount of those items, resulted in the arrest of four people.

A 52-year-old Palmerston North man was arrested after stopping his vehicle for police just south of Paekakariki. Two women, 36 and 21, and a 21-yearold man were arrested at the addresses.

In the time leading up to Thursday’s operations, Thompson said nine others were arrested and all faced a range of serious drug charges.

“We are thrilled with the outcome of the investigation and are

confident the group involved in the supply of methamphetamine has been dismantled,” he said.

“It again shows that people involved in this drug are driven by greed and will continually look to profit from it. This is at the expense of those who are addicted to its use.

“The impact on our community with methamphetamine supply and its subsequent use is huge. Taking out any supply network is satisfying in our attempts

to lessen that impact.”

The 52-year-old man appeared in court yesterday charged with possession of methamphetamine for supply; possession of cannabis for supply; and the unlawful possession of a firearm.

The 36-year-old woman also appeared in court and was charged with possession of methamphetamine for supply.

The remaining accused were yet to appear.

A special haka for New Zealand’s Olympians will be beamed to them from Britomart in a gesture of support ahead of today’s Rio Olympics opening ceremony.

Organised by Moa Brewing, the haka in Takutai Square will be filmed and broadcast to the entire New Zealand Olympic team at Kiwi House in Brazil.

Moa chief executive Geoff Ross said the Western Springs Kapa Haka group was ready to “unleash a powerful statement of support to our men and women in black”.

Ross urged any and all to participate and hoped to draw in as many patriotic supporters as possible.

“This haka is going to show our athletes that the whole country is behind them,” Ross said.

“This will be the encouragement the New Zealand team needs to make us even more proud than we already are. We’re urging you to join the war cry and give our Olympians the send-off they deserve.”

It was New Zealand’s own unique opening ceremony, he added.

Longtime David Bain supporter Joe Karam has accepting a $1 million payout was a “bittersweet pill to swallow”, while acknowledging his fight to establish Bain’s innocence was over.

“The resolution that we now have is an abomination to the principles of justice and fairness,” Karam said at a press conference yesterday.

Karam also criticised former Australian Supreme Court Judge Ian Callinan’s report on Bain’s case for compensation after he was convicted of murdering his parents and three siblings in June 1994.

Bain served 13 years in prison before the Privy Council quashed his convictions and he was acquitted in a retrial in 2009.

“The legal advice in the Callinan report is riddled with errors and inconsistencies. These defects permeate every single aspect of the report,” Karam said.

He said he had been working fulltime on the case and said Cabinet guidelines used in Bain’s compensation decision were “contrary to justice and

Somerset raising the bar

BY SUE NEWMAN Ashburton’s much loved Somerset bar is about to be reborn.

The back room at the old Somerset Hotel was a legend on Ashburton’s hospitality scene, and Nicky and Mark Milmine plan to bring it back.

The couple bought the Somerset Grocer from the Ashburton Trust in April and later this month they’ll be adding the Somerset bar into their business mix. It’s a dream they’ve had for a while and after months of research, they know their new bar will neatly fill what they see as a gap in Ashburton’s hospitality offerings.

“There’s a real need for this, for somewhere that’s quieter and more relaxed.” Mark said.

Mark and Nicky believe the time is now right for the smaller, intimate type of bar that will offer good wine, boutique beer and cocktails along with platters and full meal options from a small, but changing menu.

“We’ve looked at a lot of different places and believe there’s a really good market there for what we’re doing. We won’t be in competition to everyone else,” Mark said.

Over the next few weeks the back room at The Somerset Grocer will be stripped out, painted, wallpapered, refurnished. A new bar will be installed and the area will go from unloved and under utilised to modern, chic and understated.

The industrial style of The Somerset Grocer will carry through into the new bar.

“We’re planning for the whole area to feel like a café by day and a bar by night,” Nicky said.

The bar will create new jobs.

A new chef is on the job vacancy list (contact Mark or Nicky) and with hours that won’t run beyond about 9pm, along with a few day shifts, they believe the position will be appealing to someone wanting out of the late night circuit.

The grocer will tackle catering projects of all sizes and that includes catering a course, platter or a full meal for private dinner parties.

They’ll also do private, onpremises dinners for larger groups.

To create a more intimate bar atmosphere, the new bar will be accessed from the grocer’s Somerset Lane doorway, but guests will have access to both the bar and the café.

The Somerset Grocer café will

be closed on Sunday, August 14 for a staff training day on cocktails, bar knowledge and the new menu.

Opening night is August 20 and the Somerset Bar will be open from Thursday to Saturday until 10pm.

Creating beautiful hampers is Nicky Milmine’s specialty.

One of Ashburton’s oldest family businesses is about to change hands, but the name above the door of the store at the north end of East Street won’t change, it will still be Todd’s of Ashburton. After 96 years and three generations, the Todd family has sold its business to the Preen family of Timaru, but the current crop of Todds, Tony and Christine, will still be on the shop floor. Reporter Sue Newman takes a look at the Todd business from 1920 to the present day.

W

hen Archie Todd bought Ashburton drapery store H.C. Barrett in 1920, he laid the foundations for a business empire that would span three generations and remain in family ownership for 96 years.

When he started in the trade with Fyfe and Cummings in Dunedin as an apprentice, his starting wage was 10 shilllings a week. He eventually went to two pounds and five shillings.

After 11 years in the Dunedin business, Archie moved to Ashburton in 1914 and started work with H.C. Barrett.

Like many who went on to establish their own business empire, Archie started out with no money, but he was fuelled by ambition and by a dream. He also knew the value of hard work and in 1918 his employer, impressed with the young man’s dedication, gave him a 25 per cent share of the company’s net profit.

And that made it logical that when Mr Barrett wanted to retire, he offered his valued employee the opportunity to buy the business, insisting he hold shares in the business. He battled 12 tough trading years, eventually buying out Mr Barret’s remaining shares.

On June 1, 1933, Todd’s Drapery Ltd was born, and under that shingle the business flourished.

In 1937 the old courthouse site on East Street became vacant, and Archie decided it was time to move a few doors north to his own premise. The new store was the start of a new era, the Todd family business in a store built to meet the modern drapery needs of the Ashburton community. Archie had taken a gamble, bought the site and built a new shop, signalling that the Todd family business was in Ashburton to stay.

The doors opened on Todd’s Drapery East Street on September 29, 1938.

Times were good for Archie Todd. His business was flourishing and his sons Archie, Jack, Raymond and Les were now part of the Todd business team.

Having his sons on board didn’t mean Archie was about to retire.

He was a veteran of the drapery trade and wasn’t going anywhere.

During his working lifetime he chalked up 60 years in the drapery business. Archie Todd was known as a hard worker and family lore has it that he did not take a penny in drawings from his business. Like his staff he drew only a wage, never a dividend.

He would remain at the helm of the business for many years, but that did not mean the business wasn’t changing to meet changing customer needs.

In the late 1960s the family decided there was a market to be met with fashion for younger people and the Todi Boutique was born.

It was located on the store’s first floor and attracted a new group of shoppers, fashion-conscious teenagers. The boutique also sparked fashion parades and was responsible for lifting the fashion stakes in Ashburton.

As part of the business’ ongoing change, it moved into the bridal and evening wear market, with a section dedicated to specialist fabrics. This was also located on the upper level and traded through the 1970s.

No matter how dedicated he was to the business, the time came when Archie could no longer ignore age and the need to retire. He died in 1975 at the age of 91.

With son Les at the helm, the business continued to grow and change, but the speed of change began to escalate. As owner Les made it quite clear that the pace of change would increase, what had happened in 40 years would happen in 10. And it did.

For the first 60 years of its life, Todd’s had been a shop for every stage of life, from babies through

to the elderly. And it was a shop that catered for every want or need in the drapery line, including a large haberdashery section that sold bolts of cloth as well as linen.

For many years the annual Todd’s Ball was a highlight on Ashburton’s social scene, but it too disappeared as those formal events gave way to more casual socialising.

Changes were ongoing as customer demands changed, but the one thing that remained was the family motto “customers are our future and our friends”.

s it does today, Todd’s held a sale at the end of winter and the end of summer. Those sale days were a highlight on most women’s calendars and it was the norm for long queues to be waiting

And for the sale’s early days the store would be packed with bargain hunters.

In 1991 the generational wheels moved forward and Tony and Christine assumed the business mantle. While the third generation with new ideas and new ambitions might have been in charge, what remained unchanged was the family commitment to providing customers with good service, quality merchandise and good value for the money they spent.

And Tony and Christine were quick to start the process of change and decided the time had come to take a long, hard look at the retail outlet and to identify the things that could be changed to meet the modern trading envi-

ronment. They studied overseas trends, talked to customers and suppliers. They took that feedback, consulted store designers and made plans that would see Todd’s take a bold and very positive step into a redesign that would take it into the 21st century.

The challenge was to make the change while continuing to trade.

The solution was simple, move a few doors down to a vacant shop, naming that shop Todd’s Tempo and letting the builders loose.

Months of work followed and the modern-look Todd’s opened its doors in August 1996 to a bright, airy store.

In the years since Tony and Christine have changed their business as customer needs have changed.

The business’ role as a full-scale

drapery that catered for people at every age and stage of life was changing and, as the third generation of Todds took over the business, the focus shifted exclusively into men’s and women’s fashion.

The haberdashery disappeared along with children’s wear and so did the word drapery from the company’s name.

Trading in the 21st century was focused on fashion and Tony and Christine continued to look to the future. For them that future has meant selling their business. With their children Nicola and Michael not wanting to make a career in retail, they faced the difficult choice – to continue in business themselves until retirement was their only option, or to sell to family friends who were already experienced fashion retailers.

They opted to sell to Timaru’s Preen family, but for them that is not the end of their links with the business Tony’s grandfather founded. When the sale is wrapped up in February, they’ll both still be on the shop floor doing what they love.

Rio extravaganza begins

By DaviD Leggat Sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke will carry the New Zealand flag at the Olympic Games opening ceremony in Rio this morning.

The London Olympic silver medal 49er sailors were named at a team function in Rio on Thursday night.

They were among a list of about five candidates in the pre-announcement speculation on who would get the honour.

Others regarded as being in the frame included fellow sailors, and defending Olympic 470 champions Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie, double Olympic eventing gold medallist Mark Todd – who also carried the flag at the 1992 Games in Barcelona – unbeatable coxless pair Eric Murray and Hamish Bond, world and Olympic champion kayaker Lisa Carrington and shot putter Valerie Adams.

Burling and Tuke have been unbeaten since the 2012 Olympics in all major regattas until finishing third at the South American championships in Rio last month. They will be hoping the loss, at that particular venue, won’t be a bad omen after a stunning run of results since taking silver at the 2012 Olympics.

The last member of a New Zealand Olympic sailing team to carry the flag at the opening ceremony was three-time medallist boardsailor Barbara Kendall at Atlanta in 1996. She had won the gold medal at Barcelona in 1992.

It will be the first time in New Zealand Olympic history that two athletes will share the flag carrying duties.

Three-time Olympian Burling will technically be the official flagbearer.

Effectively the honour has the pair named as co-captains of the New Zealand team in Rio.

“We are so incredibly proud to be leading the team together and to be honoured as a crew,” said Burling.

“We would not have had the success we have had without each other and we know this is the case for many of us in the New Zealand Olympic team.”

“We are just so proud and, by sharing our experiences gained as a team, we hope we can inspire incredible performances here in Rio.” New Zealand team chef de mission Rob Waddell acknowledged the joint appointment “is a step away from Olympic tradition but it acknowledges the importance of teamwork at the Olympic Games.

The pair will be in good company.

The United States will be led into the Maracana stadium by champion swimmer Michael Phelps, while the British team will have tennis star Andy Murray at the head of their group.

Kate gets the big call-up

Ashburton netballer Kate Lloyd has been called up into the New Zealand U21 side heading to Canberra next week for the 20/U International Tournament.

The 19-year-old 192cm defender is on a Prime Minister’s scholarship at Lincoln University where she combines study with a gruelling netball training schedule.

Lloyd has been part of the national age-group squad since last year and was named as non-travelling reserve last week for the Canberra tournament.

However, selectors called her early yesterday morning to say she would be among the 14 players now boarding the plane.

The age-group squad is partway through an 18-month campaign building towards netball’s world youth cup in Botswana in 2017 and Lloyd’s selection for Canberra gives her another opportunity for selectors to see her in action.

It has been a whirlwind past two years since Lloyd decided to give up her beloved basketball and devote herself to netball.

The former Ashburton College player was selected for the South Island secondary schools’ team last year and is playing for Lincoln University’s top team in the Christchurch premier league this season.

She was also a member of the inaugural Mainland national league team playing in the Beko Netball League, and a Tactix train-on player. She was also a member of the Canterbury Under 19 team that finished third in the national tournament in Nelson recently.

Lloyd’s mother Sharon said her daughter passed on the exciting news yesterday.

She said it had been a busy time for Kate, who gets up at 5am to train in Christchurch before returning to Lincoln for lectures at 9am, then heads back to the city for another training at night.

“She was so excited to get the phone call,” she said.

“It’ll be good to see where they’re at, where we are at and give us a bit more scope in our planning going forward,” Wills said.

“Winning is an important psyche to embed into the athletes but we’re also very mindful that we need to get some combinations sorted, how people react under pressure and try new things as a management team.”

Wills is excited by the talent in the team selected and is looking to build on the leadership skills of the group.

“We have strength and leadership across the court and they all offer different things in terms of leadership – Maia Wilson in the attack end, Fa’amu Ioane and Jamie-Lee Price in the midcourt and then defensively we have Michaela Sokolich-Beatson,” she said.

“We’d like to see a whole squad

approach – we need to get in there and be bold.”

Wills points to this tour as another crucial step on the road to defending their title at the world youth cup.

“We were fortunate to go to the Cook Islands at the end of last year but this is another step up,” Wills said. “Jill (team manager) and I were fortunate to learn a lot from our experience with the Hurricanes in South Africa. We’ve got a lot of protocols and bits and pieces that we want the squad to nail now.

“By the time we hit Botswana we want to make sure that nothing is a surprise; they all know what they need to bring on the plane, how much water they need to drink – all the little things that add up to performance – it’s going to be about the 1 percenters.”

Cooper Cronk is set to finish his career at Melbourne after re-signing with the club until the end of 2018. The 32-year-old’s future has been a point of discussion as he considered a shift to Sydney to move closer to his partner. However he has opted to remain with the Storm on a two-year deal, ensuring he will add to the 293 games he has played for the club since his debut in 2004. It means three of Melbourne’s biggest stars – Cronk, Cameron Smith and Billy Slater – will likely all finish their careers together as one-club players. - AAP

Southern upsets Methven

For its size, New Zealand is one of the best nations at winning medals.

Statistics New Zealand found Kiwis ranked fourth at the 2012 London Olympics when they looked at how many medals are won per capita, not 15th like the scoreboard said.

They will be doing a similar ranking for the Rio Olympics this year.

The traditional medal table ranks countries solely on the number of gold, silver, and bronze medals they have won.

Statistics NZ senior demographer Kim Dunstan said the percapita ranking is an alternative way to think about the medal tally.

“We’re crunching the numbers during the Rio 2016 Olympics to rank countries on how many medals they win relative to their population.

“There’s no doubt New Zealand punches well above its weight.”

At the London Olympics, New Zealand won six gold medals, two silver, and five bronze.

In the traditional medal rankings, this placed New Zealand 15th overall.

But in the population-based rankings, New Zealand was behind only Grenada, Jamaica and the Bahamas who came first, second and third.

New Zealand’s population has grown from 4.4 million at the last Olympics to an estimated 4.7 million today.

“For its size, or even in the traditional rankings, New Zealand produces some of the best sportsmen and women in the world,” said Dunstan.

New Zealand ranked 7th at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 15th at the 2004 Athens games using the per-capita system rather than 23rd and 44th on the traditional medal tally.

New Zealand has medal prospects across a range of sports including rowing, canoeing, sailing, shot-put, golf and rugby sevens.

Mid Canterbury Netball organisers scurried for their calculators on Thursday night after Southern upset Methven in the last round of premier play.

The upset meant Methven and Celtic were tied in top spot and Ashburton College and Southern were tied in fourth.

Netball co-ordinator Aimee Rickard said points differentials (based on goals for and against) were needed to sort out the top four teams to play in the grade semi-finals next week.

In the final wash Celtic ended up on top, followed by Methven, Hampstead and then Ashcoll.

Southern’s stellar performance did earn them some silverware though.

By beating Methven 28-18, they took home the Challenge Trophy (contested in every round) and will now keep it in their trophy cabinet until next season.

Rickard said the final round of pool play had been great entertainment and highlighted the fact that no one team had been completely dominant.

“Even United had a strong season.

“They were within three of Hampstead last night.

“It has been a really tight contest; if it had kept on going for another six weeks things would really have been pretty interesting.”

In the semi-finals next week, Celtic will play Ascholl and Methven will play Hampstead.

Ashcoll will be hoping for a different result from Thursday when they were beaten by Celtic 32-23.

A quick start laid the groundwork for Celtic’s win – they led 8-4 at the first break and then 19-9 at half-time.

Though the schoolgirls came good in the end, the early deficit was costly.

On the other court at the earlier timeslot on Thursday night, Hampstead beat United 28-25.

Hampstead shot out to a 12-4 lead at the first quarter and was up 17-10 at half-time.

United clawed back to be down just 21-19 at the threequarter break and with four minutes to play the scores were tied 25-25.

Southern fans had the biggest treat of the night when their team downed Methven 28-18.

The women in black took six minutes to score their first goal but Southern already had seven

by that point and their shooters were looking deadly.

They ended the first quarter 9-3 ahead, and were still in control 16-10 at half-time.

Southern kept up the pressure in the third and added five points before the Methven shooters finally got their eye in with a couple of minutes to play in the period, which ended 22-13 in Southern’s favour.

Methven’s roll continued into the fourth quarter, but the Southern women regained their composure and played on for a well-deserved upset win.

Their vocal supporters on the

sideline were equally thrilled.

Southern coach Sonia Frew said some super shooting was the difference.

“Our shooting was much better and in every other aspect we clicked too.

“Our defence and mid-court has been playing well and the shooting tonight capped it off.

“We told the girls to go out and enjoy themselves, and they did.”

Southern will play United for fifth place next week, while the semi-finals will decide who will play in the grand final on August 18.

NZ Breakers stars Alex Pledger and Shea Ili will be in Ashburton next weekend to host coaching and skills sessions for junior players and coaches.

Basketball Mid Canterbury president Wayne Rodgers said the pair would be coaching basic drills and skills at Oxford Street stadium on August 14.

It was perfect timing as the Breakers did not start formal pre-season training until September 1 and the local miniball season was about to get under way.

Mid Canterbury’s miniball competition introduces hundreds of primary aged school children to the sport, which is on a roll thanks to Kiwi Steven Adams now playing in the NBA and the players like Pledger, Ili and the rest of the Breakers squad.

Rodgers said more youngsters were taking up the sport and with older players able to chase scholarships at American colleges, it was a sport with huge current appeal.

He said 7ft Pledger, a centre, and point guard Ili, were an ideal mix and able to offer tips for all positions.

Speaking during a Team USA Olympic press conference, Durant, who is looking to win his second Olympic gold medal with the USA basketball team, spoke of how he is going to miss the Kiwi centre while he plies his trade with the NBA runners-up in the upcoming season.

“I am, that’s what made the decision so hard,” Durant said on leaving Adams.

“Steven is going to be great, man. He works hard, he loves the game, and he just had that pure fun and joy.

“He’s going to be great for them.”

Lions up against it

By Wynne Gray Rising rugby optimism in Wellington is understandable.

The Hurricanes are on a roll, have played strong, reliable footy in their backyard, have not had to travel and their Lions opponents are new to this pressure.

Conventional chat insists the Hurricanes’ orthodoxy and flair, mixed in with the superior level of rugby in this part of the world, will be too much for their South African rivals at the Cake Tin tonight.

Similar conversations were swirling around the same parts of the globe last year when the unfancied Highlanders came to town and dealt to their hosts.

It was a second title malfunction from the Canes to leave them as the only uncrowned New Zealand side in the competition’s history.

A decade ago, they made their first Super Rugby final.

They had a sackful of skill, especially in their loose forwards and, while the Crusaders had a better season record and were at home, there was a feeling their sameness and loss of injured halfback Andy Ellis had levelled the odds.

We travelled to the old Lancaster Park as fog began to envelop the area.

Up high in our seats, you needed infra-red night vision glasses to make much sense of the match as referee Jonathan Kaplan and his officials did their best to adjudicate.

The slogans were right when they suggested there was nothing like being at the rugby and seeing it live.

We could have been watching a repeat screening of some grainy, hazy footage from the 1905 All Blacks tour or their match at Gloucester in 1993.

A year ago, the Canes made it to centrestage once again.

This time would be different.

They were on their home turf and had beaten the Highlanders twice in pool play.

They’d blown the competition to bits, losing just twice in pool play and were favoured by most to deliver a victory for their departing crew of experienced stars.

Sitting up high in the stands, there was no fog to interrupt my view of the Canes’ collywobbles.

Where they had been secure and decisive, they flailed and fell as the Highlanders sniffed that uncertainty.

All year, that failure has hung around the Hurricanes, not as a massive sign but a niggle to contend with.

They began poorly and a repeat shot at the title looked as likely as Donald Trump making sense.

The Canes pared back their work, Dane Coles returned from injury, coaches Chris Boyd with John Plumtree sifted their plans and Beauden Barrett began to purr.

The absence of an injured Nehe Milner-Skudder, James Broadhurst, Jeff To’omaga-Allen and Reg Goodes, and a misfiring Julian Savea, have tested the Canes but they’ve found other ways to rise. Coles’ injury is a dent but they pushed past that to a semi-final triumph.

In May, they travelled to Johannesburg and beat the Lions 50-17.

What could prevent a grand final repeat tonight?

Memories will help.

The Hurricanes beat the Highlanders 56-20 last year and then felt the electric jolt of losing to the same mob in the final.

Boyd will lay down the guide to the game for men such as Barrett, TJ Perenara, Victor Vito and Ardie Savea to implement.

Public sentiment will be their stretcher-bearer but the Lions have a bit about them.

They want to attack with the ball, Rohan Janse van Rensburg bosses the midfield, they have a boisterous scrum led by Malcolm Marx and gnarly competitors such as Franco Mostert and Jaco Kriel.

History is not a kind companion for them, as 10 previous attempts by South African sides to win playoff games in New Zealand have failed.

These Lions should say, ‘that is history’, irrelevant to their work.

They need to feel the burn that Japan did for their stratospheric upset against the Springboks at the 2015 World Cup or the rare success England found in Australia this year.

Then we’ll have a humdinger of a scrap.

Stripper scandal escalating Gallagher Group corporate services executive Margaret Comer has apologised for her comments about the Chiefs stripper scandal.

Comer, a trustee on the board of Waikato Women’s Refuge, said earlier this week that hiring a stripper was a “stupid damn thing to do” but the matter had been dealt with appropriately.

But yesterday she said she was “regretful” about her remarks.

“I feel terrible that my poor choice of words have caused hurt and alarm.

“I am even more regretful given that I have always been passionate about championing causes and organisations that improve our communities both professionally on behalf of Gallagher’s philanthropic efforts and personally on a number of not-for-profit boards.

“I most definitely do not condone any kind of mistreatment of women and am extremely regretful that my words do not reflect the high standard I expect of myself and those I am associated with.”

Earlier in the week, Comer said she was “reluctant to say that the boys were out of line” after a stripper accused unnamed Chiefs players of touching her during the team’s Mad Monday celebrations.

“If a woman takes her clothes off and walks around in a group of men, what are we supposed to do if one of them tries to touch her,” Comer said.

Meanwhile, the stripper hired by the Chiefs rugby team has told Radio NZ players wanted her to be a “whore”. She was initially hired to do one-hour waitressing then a strip performance at a Waikato hot pools. However, things quickly escalated.

“Basically, they wanted me to be a whore, which I wasn’t there to be. Basically they just made it very hostile and I had to leave immediately, because I was quite upset.”

Tietjens’ legacy assured Sir Gordon Tietjens’ legacy won’t be tarnished if New Zealand fail to win an Olympic men’s sevens gold medal.

That’s the view of women’s coach Sean Horan, who regards the 60-year-old as a founding father of the abbreviated game.

Tietjens is quite possibly entering the last week of a decorated 23-year reign as national coach.

He’s staying mum on his future, telling NZ Newswire he hadn’t thought beyond the historic three-day tournament starting on Tuesday.

“I don’t want any focus around what I’m doing,” he said.

“I’ve got so much on my plate trying to put this team together to win a gold medal.

“All I’ll say is it’s the pinnacle of my career.”

Horan regularly shares coffee breaks and lunches with Tietjens in Tauranga but wouldn’t shed any light on what the future holds.

However, he says four Commonwealth Games titles, two World Cups, 12 of the 17 world series crowns and the nurturing of more than 40 future All Blacks speaks for itself.

If the team fall short in Rio, it won’t be because Tietjens hasn’t prepared them well, Horan says.

“He’s already a sir, I don’t think you can get much higher,” Horan said.

“Total credit to him.

“It’d be pretty harsh to say that if they don’t win gold, that’s a black mark against him.

“They have a phenomenal record and we (the women’s team) have jumped on their back and learned from it.”

Horan says Tietjens has been happy to share thoughts on selection and tactics throughout his own relatively short coaching tenure.

Of greatest value are his tips about mentally challenging players, be it through arduous physical training or discipline around nutrition.

His methods have been honed from a spartan beginning in 1994.

“When he started it was just him and the physio.

“He would manage the team, train it and run it.

“Titch was the pioneer.”

NRL match-fixing The NRL is reportedly investigating a third game for match fixing.

Manly’s round-seven loss to Parramatta from this season will also be looked into after $18,000 was placed on the game by one punter, according to the Seven Network. The match is the second between the two sides believed to be investigated for fixing, with Manly’s losses to the Eels and South Sydney also being looked into from last season.

Secret visit didn’t happen

Golf fans wondering how two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson could have slipped unnoticed onto the Methven course to promote a flying golf cart can relax.

He wasn’t actually there.

Images of Watson playing golf were spliced into video of the jetpack golf cart filmed at the Methven golf course earlier this year.

The clip, which follows on from Watson filmed in a hovercraft golf cart three years ago, has gone viral with over 33 million views on social media, You Tube and television.

The publicity had been great for the Methven Golf Club, said course co-ordinator Barry Wackwitz.

He said Methven and Tai Tapu were chosen from 18 courses to trial the fun jet-

Wackwitz said he was sworn to secrecy about the video and the course was hired for the day, and closed to all other players.

The film crew involved about 50 people.

He said Methven was chosen for its seclusion and its generic look.

Golf club members had taken the publicity stunt in their stride.

“I think they just appreciate that their own course is one of the best out there.

“It is as good a course as there is in New Zealand and they are very proud of that fact.”

Wackwitz said he still preferred to walk the course.

The Australian rowing team is already one up on their New Zealand counterparts before racing even gets started in Rio. The decision by the Kiwi crews to take up residence at the athletes’ village has meant some lengthy bus journeys to and from the rowing venue at Lagoa through Rio’s notoriously congested streets. Some of the 30km trips took as long as two hours.

“We’ve had a few long bus rides that haven’t been ideal,” said single sculler Mahe Drysdale.

Olympics are always a winner

T

he four-year sporting bonanza that is the Olympics is upon us again, and once again it has made it to the starting line despite a rash of dire doom-and-gloom predictions from all quarters, ranging from a new virus that threatens your grandchildren’s grandchildren to dodgy waterways that will kill you instantly should you consume more than a quarter of a teaspoon of their contents.

The doomsayers predict a massive debt burden for Brazil for the next zillion or so years, with huge new stadiums dotting the landscape that will in a couple of years be just giant weed nurseries.

Athletes’ accommodations were so far removed from what the glossy brochures promised a year ago that they thought they were in the wrong city, and the crime and traffic issues mean that nobody will be safe, or actually be able to get where they want to go.

But – we’ve heard it all before.

In different guises, but pretty much similar words of woe have come out for every Olympics since the good Baron revitalised them in 1896 in Athens, and while many of the criticisms are valid, when the Games actually begin they are all forgotten, while the athletes and billions watching around the world take part in another supreme sporting spectacular.

Yes there are health concerns, yes Rio will be like almost every other Olympic venue and have great concrete white elephants on its books forever, and Steve Devereux MY SHOUT yes athletes might not be as comfortably domiciled as promised.

But in years to come, when those who have been immortalised in gold by crossing the line first or leaping over the highest bar or beating the other guy into submission won’t be remembering the bad bits.

Who remembers the athletes who boycotted Montreal in 1976?

It’s a bit easier to recall John Walker’s massive victory in the 1500, or Lasse Viren’s incredible long-distance exploits, or Leon Spinks and Teofilo Stevenson’s efforts in the boxing ring, or gold for New Zealand on the hockey field . . . and it’s the same for any year you want to pick on.

This edition will be exactly the same.

Despite the obvious problems of a bloated, corrupt and overweight sporting organisation seemingly doing its best to destroy itself (in Tokyo there’ll be those old Olympic favourites skateboarding and surfing joining the fray) this will be yet another gargantuan celebration of sport, watch by millions of Kiwis on Sky’s 300 dedicated channels, as well as all the illegal streaming sites on the web, and it will finish up with a big tick in the win column.

Latta singing in the rain Nobody likes unloading a truckload of horses in pouring rain, but Awapuni trainer Lisa Latta was only seeing upside in the chore.

Latta has seven runners engaged for today’s Riccarton meeting and travelled them down overnight Wednesday, the float arriving at the track at 5.30am on Thursday.

Latta will saddle the favoured pair of Platinum Command and North And South in the Gr.3 eStar 119th Winter Cup (1600m) at Riccarton.

Both mares are at their best on deep tracks, hence the trainer’s delight with the Christchurch rain.

“It was pouring down as they were unloading the truck this morning and to be honest, we were pleased to hear it,” Latta said.

“She just doesn’t like those gluey tracks and that’s why we’re welcoming the rain with her.

“She’s best when the tracks are loose,” Latta said.

“I’m really happy with both of them and by all accounts they’ve both travelled down well, so here’s hoping anyway.”

Kerbside giveaways have to be a winner Sue Newman

he Christchurch City Council is grappling with an interesting problem – people running their own recycling depot on the footpath outside their home.

Apparently city dwellers, unwilling to pay to dump their rubbish or lacking a trailer or truck to take it to the recycling centre, are opting to move it kerbside.

They’re offering an opportunity for others to pick through the stuff they don’t want and to take it away if they have a use for it.

The council mightn’t be too happy with the situation, but in its purest sense it’s the ultimate in recycling.

Yes, you can understand the council does not want urban footpaths clogged up with rubbish that no-one wants and no-one will take away, but that aside, the impromptu recycling does have the makings of a great community recycling scheme.

It happens in Australia on two fronts – an official council event that occurs once or twice a year where you put out the stuff you don’t want and the council picks it up and unofficially most weekends.

It’s the unofficial one that has a heap of merit.

Ashburton could lead the way by setting up a simple community recycling option. Tag a couple of weekends a year where it is legal for people to put the furniture and household stuff they don’t want out on the street. Let it stay there until Sunday night and then it must be cleared away.

Those goods become a collection free-for-all for anyone who wants to pick them up and take them away.

It’s the ultimate “one man’s junk ...” story in action.

Kerbside giveaways might not appeal to councils wanting to keep streets neat and tidy, but if there are clear rules around what can be put out, when it can be put out and when it must be cleared away, and if there is a clear set of penalties in place if the rules are broken, it’s difficult to imagine how this wouldn’t work.

It’s a clear win all round – one household gets rid of the stuff it calls junk, another gets something it wants and needs, what’s not taken away is cleared away and if the rules are broken the offending householder is fined.

At last a local councillor who is demonstrating the necessary backbone to come out from under all the suppression orders to publish and inform Ashburtonians of the facts and the figures as she has researched them – albeit, I suggest, without the logic.

My understanding of the habit of water travel, either above or below ground, is that natural is downhill (mountains to seas) and not across country (Christchurch to Dunedin).

In my opinion it seems a great many more people (not only Donna and the Bung the Bore mob) appear to have (perhaps conveniently) lost all knowledge of that fact.

By including numbers relative to both Hinds and Selwyn, is Donna hoping to obscure or distort any given argument either for or against whatever expected or planned outcome might be wanted?

I support Donna’s point number two and the, as yet, unproven consequences of the consent and its recharge effectiveness (in spite of Guardian article of August 4 Aquifer recharge project working well). Mostly that article conveys that know-how has been gained and that such an exercise is achievable.

After 30 years of mostly active irrigation farming and over that period having no reported complaints of my pumping affecting any other downstream user (also monitored in part by observing and measuring of a second well, downstream by around 800 me-

tres) on our own property of the principal well, to which I refer.

The pertinent stats of that main well from memory are: Well depth, 130 feet; static water level, 60-70 feet; draw-down, inconclusive; water quantity, too much to accurately measure; well drillers’ calculation/estimation, 1600 gallons per minute.

My irrigator needed 400 gallons per minute.

Clearly, therefore, while in use at least 1200 gallons per minute are going straight past and still available for others.

I consider the consent part for aquifer recharge superfluous to requirements and one which in all probability will never need to be activated due to low water levels so long as in the first instance an adequate, constant and excess of requirements aquifer is tapped.

o here I am in Mrs May’s post Brexit Britain.

Even seven weeks after that seismic political upheaval, people still stand in small groups on street corners wondering aloud, with haunted looks upon their drawn faces, what next to expect.

Meanwhile, the man mainly responsible for the catastrophe – or triumph, depending on which school of thought you represent – “Smiley” Nigel Farage, has resigned from UKIP – United Kingdom Independence Party – his job, as he sees it, done.

Finding a successor, though, is turning out to be quite a challenge, as candidates with Smiley’s passion and persuasion seem not to be that numerous.

The party needs such a person if only to prevent the leavers being overwhelmed by the controlled lethargy of the remainers.

However, concern for that issue and for the situation in general has been temporarily overtaken by Mr Cameron’s wishlist of resignation honours – the traditional gift of an outgo-

ing English prime minister.

Both the number of them and the names of many of the chosen ones have caused a national sensation, to the point where the original impact of the Brexit vote has been cast aside.

Most notorious honour, the OBE for Mrs Cameron’s fashion and hairstylist (but not for the person who actually washed the hair of the Prime Minister’s wife).

Included, as well, all sorts of Conservative Party donors, some of whose financial sources seem less white than driven snow. It is the longest list of such awards since those of Harold Wilson in 1976, which became a perfect storm overnight.

All in all it has done little to

endear the recently – and precipitately – retired prime minister to his former supporters.

Newspapers are showing a front page photo of a “paunchy” Mr Cameron, paddling in Corsica, sporting a £225 ($450) pair of togs and enjoying, what we are informed, is a £15,000 holiday.

The political roof may have fallen in but only an imminent declaration of war seems significant enough for the House of Commons to be re-called during the summer recess.

Hardly surprising, when you think about it, Hitler never had a chance.

Meanwhile, news has reached me of the “spat” between Marama Fox, the second of the Maori Party MPs and Winston Peters, with Dame Turia commenting from the touchline.

I understand Ms Fox has been describing Helen Clark as a “traitor” to the Maori cause over the Foreshore and Seabed Act of 2004 and the activities of the police in the Tuhoe saga of 2007, with Mr Peters, foreign minister at the time, describing such

So Ms Clark’s bid for the top job at the UN is becoming a political football at home.

I suppose that was inevitable.

I am, though, on Winston’s side on this one, even if I might have used a lesser word than “treacherous”.

Helen needs all the support she can get if she is to be appointed to a position for which she is so well qualified and backbiting from however far away will not help her cause.

Of course, in the end, she is likely to be out-gunned by the lady from Bulgaria, simply because it’s the turn of Eastern Europe to hold the position.

Even so, we should be doing all we can to further Ms Clark’s chances.

Also coming in over the airwaves, a “suggestion” that voting in New Zealand should be compulsory, as per Australia.

I doubt whether anything will be decided in the next three weeks, but I would be against such a diminution of democracy.

I

can remember my father telling me, I suspect many times, “if you don’t know ask”.

There were also times when I was advised to ask even if I knew the answer.

You will learn if you ask.

At times I think I drove mum around-the-bend with innumerable questions.

Many questions we forget, some are important at the time,

Others are life changing: “Will you marry me?”

One question is the only real question. Jesus, as God living here on earth, asked it, “who do you say I am?” This has nothing to do with how good or bad we are, but everything to do with a God who loves us all equally and wants us to have a relationship with Himself.

Jesus asks the question of us all today, “Who do you say I am?”

Nearing retirement they wish to try to extract the maximum amount of value from the business.

Assuming they succeed in selling at an acceptable price, the issue facing them is how they replace the income they have been used to receiving, especially with interest rates at historically low levels.

The Official Cash Rate is currently at 2.25 per cent, and projected by many to be as low as 1.75 per cent by the end of the year.

Term deposits at the major banks are at 3.25 per cent for 12 months, with five year term deposits at the 3.60 per cent mark.

Take off tax and inflation (which is currently negligible) and the real return from bank deposits is not great.

So how does the newly retired business owner implement an investment strategy to achieve somewhere close to the income they desire and have been accustomed to?

Overall, it will depend on the amount they have to invest, the level of income they wish to receive, the level of risk they are willing (and can afford) to take, and whether they are prepared to use a mix of capital and income to meet their needs, or just rely on the income they generate.

For most people, there will be an element of compromise in this decision.

Investors seem now to be accepting that an “I want the best return with no risk” approach is no longer achievable.

The key to an acceptable solution is how risk is managed.

Structuring an investment portfolio may include investing in the main asset classes – cash (including short term deposits), fixed interest, property and equities (shares).

The return from, and risk of, the portfolio will be determined by the mix of these asset classes and level of diversification.

Investing in fixed interest should involve looking at who is providing the security and their creditworthiness, the length of term of the investment, the rate or yield that is offered, and the type of security.

Generally the longer the term the higher the yield you would expect.

From a credit perspective, the better quality the security the lower the rate expected.

A mix of local government, bank and good quality corporate fixed interest securities may comprise the fixed interest part of a portfolio.

A “laddered” approach will see a mix of maturity dates to manage interest rate risk.

In terms of property, given the capital gain achieved with the fast-rising New Zealand property market, now may be a time to look at taking the gains on rental properties.

Property syndicates offering attractive returns are becoming more popular however, the issue for these types of investments is lack of liquidity.

They are easy to buy into, but

difficult to exit at a market price.

Property companies listed on the sharemarket are generally well diversified, well managed, with consistent income yields, and offer liquidity.

Businesses that are listed on the sharemarket may also be attractive to business owners who understand the risks of business.

A diversified mix of companies could include sectors such as electricity, building and infrastructure, telecommunications, retail, transport, and healthcare.

Income is derived from companies paying out part of their profits by way of dividend.

The added benefit of capital growth is achieved over time as the business grows.

Ultimately, each investor’s set of circumstances will need a tailored approach to deliver an investment solution to meet their needs.

One that will provide flexibility to cater for changes that occur over time and one that will deliver peace of mind and meet “the sleep test”.

Isis Sinai head killed Egypt’s military said the leader of the Islamic State’s affiliate has been killed in the Sinai Peninsula, along with several key aides and 45 other members of the extremist group.

Few details were immediately available and there was no word from the extremist group’s branch in Egypt on what, if confirmed, would be a major setback for the Sinaibased militants.

A posting on the Facebook page of the Egyptian military’s chief spokesman, Brig-Gen Mohammed Samir, said Abu Doaa al-Ansari was killed in an operation south of the coastal city of el-Arish.

It said the operation was carried out by counter-terrorism forces backed by warplanes and guided by “accurate intelligence”.

The statement did not provide a total number of those killed or say when the operation took place, but two military officials with first-hand knowledge of the conflict in the turbulent northern part of Sinai said al-Ansari and his aides were killed in an airstrike that targeted a house located amid olive groves south of el-Arish. “Even if someone with this nom de guerre exists, this will be one more time Egypt’s military announces that it has killed the leader, or a leader of a group that never publicly named its leader,” Sabry said.

US woman dead, Aussies hurt in attack An American woman has been killed and five other people injured, including two Australians, by a man with suspected mental health issues who went on a rampage with a knife in central London.

Armed police were called late in the evening after a 19-year-old Norwegian man of Somali origin began attacking people in London’s Russell Square, a park near the site of a 2005 suicide bombing. Police said there was no evidence the attack was terrorism related.

The victim was identified as Darlene Horton, a woman in her 60s who was the wife of a US psychology professor. She was treated at the scene but pronounced dead a short time later.

A British man who was stabbed in the stomach remains in hospital in serious but stable condition, police said.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that two Australians, a man and a woman, received

non-life threatening injuries in the attack. The man, stabbed in the chest, and the woman, stabbed in the back, have both been released from hospital.

An American man and an Israeli woman also suffered stab wounds but have also been released from hospital.

“All of the work we have done so far increasingly points to this tragic incident as having been triggered by mental health issues,” London Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said.

“We believe this was a spontaneous attack and that the victims were selected at random,” said Britain’s senior anti-terrorism officer.

“So far, we have found no evidence of radicalisation that would suggest that the man in our custody is in any way motivated by terrorism.”

Police, who arrived within six minutes of being called, used a taser to subdue the suspect and he was later formally arrested on suspicion of murder.

ANC facing its biggest electoral setback South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC) looks to be facing its biggest electoral setback since the end of apartheid, after the partial results of municipal elections.

With 85 per cent of the votes in, the ANC trails its main rival, the Democratic Alliance, in the cities of Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.

The two parties are in a close fight in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

But the ANC is still in the

lead nationally. Unemployment and corruption scandals surrounding President Jacob Zuma have tarnished the ANC’s image.

“The ANC failed to enthuse their voters and give them a credible offer and that is what often happens to parties that have mismanaged the economy, mismanaged the city, but it also says that we are growing as a party,” Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane said.

“We’ve been able to make

an offer before South Africans that is compelling.”

Mr Maimane earlier told 702 radio: “We call this the change election because we felt that it was a referendum on Jacob Zuma as a national figure, but we also had a referendum about the future of South Africa.”

The municipal election result is probably the biggest wake-up call the governing African National Congress has received since it ushered in de-

mocracy in 1994.

Clearly the ANC still commands huge support across the country but that support is waning. It can no longer take it for granted that the black majority will blindly follow it.

Its power and influence is in decline.

In-fighting, public squabbles and a host of corruption scandals have been slowly eating away at the reputation of a once glorious movement of the people.

Seasonal Positions in Christchurch and Ashburton Branches HydroServices provides soil moisture monitoring and irrigation management advice to growers throughout NZ. We are currently looking for suitable people to join our Christchurch and Ashburton Branches; living in the local area would be an advantage. The successful applicants will be required to install aluminium tubes into soil using a motorised auger or breaker hammer.

You will also be required to monitor soil moisture using a neutron probe and provide scheduling advice to our farming clients on a scheduled basis. You will be assigned tasks as part of a team, with a strong support network to help.

Experience with operating small motors and a farming/horticultural background is an advantage. Full training is given.

The position is from September to April 2017.
