17 laptops stolen from Hinds School

For the second time in less than six years, thieves have made off with a number of Hinds School’s laptops.

After staff returned from school holidays to discover 17 missing Chromebooks, police are appealing for any information the public can provide.

The Acer Chromebooks, a type of quick, low-powered laptops, are used at the Year 0-8 school for digital education programmes.

It is not known exactly when in the

holidays – between Friday July 6 and Monday July 23 – the burglary occurred, but police said they want to hear from anyone who has any information about the break-in – or if anyone has seen the Chromebooks for sale.

On Labour Day in 2012, six Acer Aspire laptops and two cameras were also taken from the school.

Following that incident, a member of the public came forward with an account of some “suspicious activity” they had seen and a detailed description of one of the alleged thieves.

With their help, police were able to track down the two 16-year-old males and a 17-year-old female who were responsible.

After the latest incident, a number of parents and community members have taken to Facebook to express their support for the small school – and their anger at what happened.

Police said they urge anyone with any information to contact the Ashburton Police Station on 307 8400.

An extravaganza of art, toys, clothes and acessories

An extravaganza of art, toys, clothes and acessories took over the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall on the weekend during the annual Methven Craft Fair.

Craft lovers from near and far flocked to peruse goods from more than 30 stallholders at the event, which serves as the biggest regular fundraiser for the Methven Playcentre.

Some sellers came from as far afield as Invercargill and North Canterbury, while a team of parents from the playcentre worked to ensure things ran smoothly.

Organiser Rosa Watson said an extra treat this year came in the form of freshly served Devonshire tea with scones, jam and cream, which they were hoping to continue in future events.

“It’s nice to have wee changes like that which give people an extra something to enjoy each year,” she said.

With a bit of sunshine and a leisurely atmosphere, she said it had been a fantastic couple of days.

■ RESCUE

Family thanks climber’s rescuers The family of an Australian climber who was rescued from Mt Aspiring after a week in the cold has thanked rescuers and medical crews.

Lieutenant Terry Harch, 29, was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital on Friday after activating his distress beacon four days earlier.

He spent the following days waiting for a break in the weather until search and rescue teams could locate him.

A search and rescue operation began on Tuesday, but poor weather meant rescuers could not reach the climber until Friday afternoon.

Harch was said to have used his military training and mountaineering skills to shelter from the freezing conditions. Four Wanaka Alpine Rescue crew members were also dropped off to look after him with warm clothing, tents and food.

“Mr Harch wishes to return to his duties as an officer in the Australian Army as quickly as possible,” the statement said.

Harch is an experienced climber who had previously scaled Mt Cook for charity.

On Saturday it was revealed it is not the first time Harch has called for help from New Zealand’s

search and rescue crews. In January 2013, Harch also had to be airlifted off Mt Tasman along with a British climber.

The pair had spent two nights sheltering in a narrow crevasse below a massive ice cliff, after veering off course during their descent.

Rescuers who found Harch said the Australian soldier would likely not have lasted another night on the mountain.

Funding windfall for foodbank

Growing demand and rising costs has seen Ashburton’s Salvation Army foodbank make a bid for community funding – and it has been successful.

In the latest round of donations from the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury, the foodbank was granted $10,000 to help fill its pantry shelves so it could support people in need.

And that windfall put a smile of the face of its manager, Judith Lilley.

“This is the first grant we’ve had apart from very early in the piece when the foodbank started in operation,” she said.

Traditionally the foodbank is funded through the Salvation Army Family Store but, like the store, it has to pay its share of the building’s rates and overheads.

Growing demand also puts pres-

sure on resources.

While the shelves of the foodbank were currently reasonably well stocked, supplies ran down very quickly, Lilley said.

“Winter has been busy – with some quiet patches – but we’ve been able to meet most of that demand.

“Our last appeal was very good and the community here is fantastic,” she said.

There was growing demand

from people who were ‘working poor,’ Lilley said, but people came to the foodbank for many reasons such as losing their job or simply a change in personal circumstances.

“Every case is taken on its merits and for some they might only need one food parcel, others might need more.”

St Andrew’s Church, Geraldine also received a grant in the latest funding round.

Other local organisations to share in the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury’s $47,416 donations were Life Education Trust Mid and South Canterbury, $8830; Age Concern Ashburton, $2000; Ashburton Barbarian Rugby League Club, $1539; and Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service, $1000.

The remaining funds were given to five South Canterbury organisations.

Ashburton health centre officially opened

Ashburton’s new one-stop health care shop was officially declared open on Saturday.

After years in the making, Health Minister David Clark drew open the curtains and marked the milestone opening of Three Rivers Health.

The comprehensive medical centre, located on Allens Road, Allenton, brings together the Gym Company and Allenton Medical Centre, Searles Allenton Pharmacy, podiatrists Feet n’ Motion and Pro-Active physio.

It covers 15,000 square metres and is already catering for around 10,000 patients – but can look after 18,000 in total.

Addressing a crowd including medical professionals, MPs and community members, Clark said the benefits for patients and the opportunity for professional learning and integration of services that have been created are immense.

“This building and the services within it are all focused on improving people’s access to high quality care,” he said.

Three Rivers Health was built

by Penny Holdaway, John Guthrie and Malcolm Wootton and prac-

tice ownership and support association, Southlink Health.

Allenton Medical Centre made the move from their old Harrison Street location to the new premises in December last year and first began welcoming patients on December 11.

It is nearly nine years since planning for the comprehensive medical centre began.

Clark said the new centre is a significant opportunity for professionals to provide world class health care in Ashburton.

“It signals greater co-ordination, greater co-operation and ultimately a journey toward fully integrated primary health care for the people in the Ashburton community.”

Those who attended the opening on Saturday had a walk-through tour, including a glimpse into the centre’s 15 consulting rooms.

Centre stage at ground level is a large waiting and reception area with the consultation and treatment rooms, while the upper level includes private work space for nurses and doctors, the telephone reception area and social and teaching spaces.

It’s hoped the new centre will appeal to young doctors – both in terms of the facilities and the opportunities it provides.

Ultimate skydiving marathon

On the morning of December 3 this year, Steve Gregor will wake up, strap himself into a parachute, hop in a plane at Skydiving Kiwis and take the plunge from 2000 feet.

He’ll then run to another plane, slip on another parachute and immediately repeat the jump – not once, not twice, but a jump every six minutes for the next 15 hours, right until sunset, when he has completed well over 100 consecutive plunges.

The Christchurch-based sport skydiver instructor is attempting the ultimate skydiving marathon over Ashburton to fundraise for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Assisted by more than 40 crew including three pilots, at least seven safety officers, parachute changing assistants and even an inplane nutritionist, he’ll be doing what hasn’t ever been done in New Zealand before – and now he’s looking for Ashburtonians to back his cause.

Gregor said it’s the way to combine an incredibly worthy charity with the sport he loves.

He’s not new to such challenges – in January, he did 30 jumps for his 30th birthday over Ashburton.

“It was right after that I said to the pilot – I want to do 100. They immediately came up with this big list of all the reasons it wouldn’t be viable … and since then I’ve slowly worked through everything on it,” he said.

“I presented my ideas to the team at Skydiving Kiwis and once they knew it would be highlighting the sport and sponsors in a safe way, they were totally on board.”

A regular skydive would involve a 20-minute ascent in the plane to 12,000 feet, a 60 second freefall and a four or five minute parachute decent.

But by jumping from just 2000 feet, Gregor will only have to spend two minutes in the plane at a time.

He also won’t have to worry about adjusting to the altitude and will be able to maximise the number of jumps he can do within daylight hours.

He’s taking a fighter pilot balance training programme to prevent any motion sickness on the day and has signed up to an intense physical training programme to condition both his body and mind.

On the day, if any safety officers are feeling uncertain about his capacity to make coherent decisions, they can immediately pull the pin on the attempt.

“I’m going to be showing up over-prepared,” he said.

Detective Sergeant Dylan Ross said shots were fired at an address on Surrey Street around 6am. The shots were believed to have been fired from a passing vehicle. The occupants of the house, who were home at the time, were not injured.

Alleged assault A 13-year-old boy has been referred to Youth Aid after two Waikato Hospital nurses were allegedly indecently assaulted as they walked to their cars on Friday. Police say the two separate attacks happened after 4pm in the Waikato District Health Board’s Pembroke Street carpark building.

DHB spokeswoman Kathryn Jenkin said the two alleged victims were both women nurses who were shaken by the assaults.

He said the team are the most far-reaching charity he could fundraise for. The Canterbury-West Coast team complete hundreds of rescue missions each year, yet are only 50 per cent government funded – and must raise $4 million each year to ensure their service can continue.

Gregor himself has had to use the service before and said it’s rare for them to leave a mission without a passenger.

“They’re a service that anyone might need at any time … I want to raise money for them but also awareness.”

Gregor has set up a website – hundredjumpproject.com – where people can find out more about his cause and leave donations – anywhere from $1 upwards.

He is also seeking a naming sponsor for his project.

On his Facebook page, “Hundred Jump Project” Gregor will be posting updates about his training and is giving away a 12,000ft skydive to one lucky winner.

Anyone is welcome to come along and watch on the actual day, he said.

The body of a man has been found north of Murchison. Police are investigating the circumstances of the unexplained death after the discovery was reported shortly before 11.30am. Toddler burned A toddler has been airlifted to Middlemore Hospital suffering burn injuries after falling into a fire pit in Northland. The incident happened yesterday on a farm south of Dargaville at Pouto.

Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust spokesman Lincoln Davies said the little boy was airlifted by Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter with moderate injuries. The boy was taken to the specialist burns unit at Middlemore Hospital and arrived there around 3.30pm.

Ready for a summer of learning

Summer might seem forever away but not if you’re the organising team behind the Methven Summer School.

The day last year’s school wrapped up, the team started planning for the next event and last week they released their course list for January.

Summer School 2019 courses

are now open for enrolments.

The courses have been running for over 30 years by successive committees of locals and while the committee members may have changed, the aim of the summer school is still to promote Methven and teach new skills to anyone prepared to learn.

While many old favourites will be back on the list a number of new courses have been added in-

cluding public speaking, artisan bread making and a new take on needlework.

The favourites that are usually fully booked within days of the early bird enrolment specials starting, home curing and cheese making, are both back for next year.

A taste of some of those courses – Painting all Things Water with Bronwyn Shimmin – painting wa-

ter in oils and acrylics for painters of all levels of experience; Delectable Desserts with Rose Groundwater – a day-long course that will provide participants with new culinary skills and Step up to the tee, intermediate golf with Jason Tilley – suitable for a wide range of abilities.

Any government funding for the school has long since evaporated so all costs to run the event have

to be covered by course fees but there is a growing trend for people to give course fees as a Christmas gift, said school committee chairperson Sandy Redmond.

Discounts are available on course fees during the earlybird period until November 30.

Stanislava Labecka My name is Stanislava Labecka.

I am 83 years old and was born in Poland.

As a little child I was exiled with my mother, father, brother and sister to the Ukraine because during World War Two Poland was over-run and occupied by both Germany (1939) and Russia (1942), dividing our country and our people, sending some one way, some another.

This was a very bleak time in the lives of Polish people.

After the war we were returned to Poland and took up our education, where I spent 10 years at school.

I went on to university studying for my doctorate (the equivalent to a New Zealand teaching degree) from 1955 to 1960 at the Agricultural University of Szczecin (Stettin) in subjects relating to animals; to their health and husbandry.

I lectured at that university for 35 years, where I loved both the work and the students.

During this time of study I met my future husband, Tadeusz, whose exile with his mother had been to Siberia, a train journey of 4000 miles and taking four months to complete.

We have one daughter, Kasia, who studied veterinary science and then went to England to continue her studies, qualifying in this discipline and working as a veterinarian.

In England she met and married her husband, Clive.

They emigrated to New Zealand in the mid 1990s and now have a lovely family of three fine sons.

Tadeusz and I came to visit them in 1999, stayed for three months and liked New Zealand so much so that we ourselves emigrated here in 2006.

Our reasons for coming were both personal, because we have our daughter, her husband and children here with whom we wanted to share our lives and, also, at that time the political situation in Poland was not a happy one, although my life was happy among my friends and the few family members left among us.

In Ashburton we first rented a house in Allenton and found the people friendly, although our limited command of English made communication difficult.

We found the weather in New Zealand to be very kind.

Winters here are not as harsh as in Poland.

After about two years we moved to our present home, a self-contained flat on the property of Kasia and Clive.

It is a big thing to pack up

all your belongings and leave your homeland as you, the readers, know.

Leaving family and friends and arriving in a land where the language is different was challenging for us at our ages, but we have settled very happily and would not consider returning to Poland.

One of the very good things for me about Ashburton is the pool at the aquatic centre in which I am able to exercise and find this so helpful for my disability management.

Also, the Time Bank has opened the opportunity for me to practice speaking English on a regular basis with a new friend.

I find that New Zealand English is different from the more formal English I had encountered in books and study materials.

Reading and writing English does not present quite such a problem for me as does the speaking of it.

We do miss Polish bread and Polish sausages. We have overcome this by making so much of our own traditional food at our home.

We miss the variety and abundance of mushrooms which are gathered freely from the fields and forests of Poland.

We celebrate Christmas Eve as the important festival of Christmas, in the Polish custom, with a dinner shared with family and friends and served in the traditional way of seven fish dishes, soup and dumplings, salads and breads. Then we sang Christmas carols together.

I miss hearing the Polish language spoken but overcome this by visiting Polish friends in Christchurch for special times like birthdays and other celebrations.

And I do miss my lovely holiday home which was seven kilometres closer to the Baltic Sea, away from the noise and bustle of the big city where I worked.

Back in Poland it was a long journey from our home to go skiing but New Zealand has many good skifields very close to the cities. There are so many facilities to enjoy here that are easily accessible.

We believe life is to be lived and enjoyed to the full among family and friends. There are too many things to do and experience, to waste the time given us.

Love and remember who you are and where you come from and as newcomers, take the opportunities this land offers and experience all you are able and can afford to do.

Newcomer rural driver licensing The first group of ladies have completed the road code lessons and they are now proud holders of a learner’s licence.

This is wonderful achievement for our ladies who, for most, English is a second language. They are so excited to be getting out on the road.

We have a great group of volunteer mentors who have offered their time to teach their allocated student to drive.

Our mentors have a wide range of driving experience and come from all different walks of life.

We really appreciate our volunteers and are sure the experience will be as rewarding for them as it is for our ladies.

We have held a training evening for the mentors and the feedback has been very positive with most people commenting that they enjoyed the refresher course and picked up a few tips to keep safer on the roads.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the students and mentors out and about and I know it’s going to make such a difference to their lives once they pass their restricted test.

Our aim is to reduce isolation and we are well on the way to achieving this with the group lessons which have given the ladies a new social network already.

It can only grow from there.

We also have a wonderful team of volunteers who look after the children while their mothers are in class.

They do a fantastic job keeping the little ones occupied so their mums can concentrate on their studies.

We are now ready to start a second group of 12 on the road code theory classes and are taking applications from interested women who are living in the country and

would like our help to get them on the road.

Always make sure your operating system and web browser are up to date on all devices: computers, smartphones and tablets. Software companies do their best to patch-up and close vulnerabilities when they are found, so keeping up to date is the best way to protect yourself.

Use anti-virus and a firewall on your home computer.

These applications protect you from the most obvious and often malicious threats.

And keep the anti-virus’ database as current as possible (mostly it’s done automatically).

Know about phishing. Phish-

vulnerability is found, and lack of technical knowledge only makes it more frightening.

What can you do about these threats?

The honest answer would be “not much”.

But you need only to do very little.

The fact it, if someone decides ing is an attack (usually through an email) in which you receive a supposedly legitimate email from your bank, from Microsoft, from EBay, the IRD, or any other similar organisation. It’s actually fake, and meant to get you to click on links on the email, and through that to login to the service, essentially providing the hacker with your login details.

The way to defend against this attack is very simple – ignore these emails.

These organisations would almost never email you. If you are really worried call the bank yourself or go to

to target you specifically they would probably find a way to hack you.

Then again, if someone really wants to break into your house they’ll be successful as well, yet you are not going to move to a castle on a remote island, are you?

What you really need to know

is how to defend yourself against common attacks, ones that target millions indiscriminately, and that’s what I’m going to discuss here (see points below).

This article is a partial transcript of a workshop delivered several times by Adi Avnit, a Newcomer himself, and a software developer in a past life.

the organisation’s web page (not through the email), login and check everything is OK. Be careful with clicking on email links or attached files, even from your friends. A friend may be infected and the virus would email their contacts automatically without them knowing, and you clicking on the file would infect your computer as well.

If you receive an unexpected email – call them and ask them about it.

Always backup. Some viruses encrypt your entire data and then ask for ransom to restore it. If you have a backup

you can always restore your files.

Don’t use obvious passwords. Some people still use ‘12345678’ as a password.

Longer phrases are more secure and easier to remember.

Try to avoid open WIFI networks (airports, cafes, etc), as they make you (while connected) more vulnerable.

If you did use such network, try to make your device ‘forget’ it afterwards, so it won’t connect automatically to a network with the same name (which could be faked).

And remember: Hackers don’t wear hoodies in the real world.

Israeli hummus Hummus is a big deal in Israel.

It’s one of the country’s iconic foods, and people often go to have lunch at a hummusia (hummus restaurant), which serve hummus with flatbread (pita) on the side and probably falafel (deep-fried ground chickpeas ball) as well.

You may hear people having long debates as regards to which is the best hummus restaurant (of course everyone has their own favourite).

The Israeli hummus, as opposed to the more grainy-textured hummus in most neighbouring countries (or the Kiwi hummus), is very smooth and creamy in texture.

This is achieved by boiling the chickpeas until they are very soft (and letting them cool down) before mashing them.

Adding baking soda is a sort of cheating, since it shortens the boiling time.

The serious hummus makers would use dry chickpeas (with require repeated rinsing and soaking in water for several hours), but this recipe is based on canned chickpeas, more easily obtained in a local supermarket.

The other major ingredient in hummus, beside chickpeas, is tahini, which is essentially sesame seed oil, and can also be served on its own.

I have had the pleasure of having a newcomers’ stall at the Back to Basics Expo, and this is the recipe of the hummus I was serving to expo visitors.

1 can of chickpeas (in water) ½ C (or a jar) of tahini Lemon juice (from one lemon)

•

3-5 garlic cloves (you can also use a big tablespoon of mashed garlic) • 1 t of cumin powder • ½ t table salt • ½ t of baking soda For serving • Olive oil, parsley and paprika 1.

Boil the chickpeas (on a low flame) with the baking soda while stirring the water.

When the chickpeas are very soft, (easily smashed), add the salt and continue cooking for a couple of minutes.

Remove from the stove and let cool down.

Poor the soft chickpeas and the garlic into a blender or a food processor and blend until you get a pastelike texture.

If the paste looks too thick add some of the water the chickpeas were cooked in.

Add the tahini, cumin and lemon juice and blend together. (You should add the spices gradually and taste it to prevent over-spicing).

Store in the refrigerator.

The hummus needs to be less thick than you need it, as it gets thicker when cooled down.

Serve on a plate – making a small valley. Pour about a spoon of olive oil in the valley and sprinkle some parsley and paprika for colour. You can also serve with whole chickpeas.

Quit the lumping and labelling S

ometimes us humans are a bit eager to put things in neat little compartments in a bid to understand them.

In the past week I have skimmed with intrigue three – mildly niggly – separate articles about new mental health conditions, all of which are openly attributed to my generation.

Firstly, according to the American Psychological Association millennials are suffering from Eco-Anxiety – a chronic condition where concern about the current state of the planet and the challenges of saving it manifest as extreme stress, depression and substance abuse.

Secondly, according to the World Health Organisation, we can now also be concerned

about Gaming Disorder – problematic behaviour linked to digital or video games. Yep, millennials can officially have their Fortnite Addiction treated as a serious condition under the International Classification of Diseases.

And in perhaps the most bizarre of the three, British doctors and plastic-surgery professionals have coined the term Snapchat

Dysmorphia to describe how photo filters are giving selfie-takers a false sense of perfection, in turn encouraging them to obsess over minor flaws in their appearance. As a result, the app’s users are increasingly seeking plastic surgery to replicate the effects.

Who ever knew the damn dog filter could ever lead to its very own mental health classification?

Now I don’t mean to question any issues that could mess with the mental health of my fellow 20 and 30 somethings, nor deny the fact that any of these matters are real, serious and worthy of acknowledgement.

But why we must make like the recent purchasers of a DYMO™ machine and put labels on everything?

It seems like a problem that we can’t just approach the conditions on a case-by-case basis, considering the factors around the individual and if needed – assessing it within the parameters of an existing, more general condition.

Surely, we can acknowledge the reasons behind mental health problems without creating specific categories, sub-categories and sub-sub categories.

By waving around big scientific labels it feels like we’re open real people’s struggles to generalisation and sensationalism.

We’re also give them the chance to internalise stigma as a formally diagnosed Fortnite Addict – and do tell me that’s not just a smidgen condescending.

In perhaps the most irksome aspect of it all – each article I saw on the three was accompanied by a flashy iStock image of the millennials affected.

All those new conditions, exclusively suffered by members of one collective, cohesive generation? Something seems a teensy bit off here.

The idea of a new, united set of humans every 20 years since the second world war is a bit arbitrary – and crediting so many of the world’s problems to either the Millennials or the Baby Boomers certainly hasn’t proven helpful yet.

So let’s put that proverbial DYMO label maker deep in the cupboard and leave the labelling behind.

Helping people to help themselves Y

ou may have heard the saying that if you give a man (or a woman) a fish, you will feed him (or her) for a day.

However, if you teach that person to fish, you will enable him, or her, to feed their family for a lifetime.

This Chinese proverb is applicable to our welfare system.

While it is right and just that we support individuals who are out of work, we should also help these people wherever possible to enter or get back into the workforce so they can stand on their own two feet.

For this reason, the Jobseeker benefit comes with obligations, including looking for work, turning up for appointments, and staying drug-free.

With unemployment still low and many sectors facing a shortage of workers, there are plenty of opportunities for people who are looking for work.

However, under the current Government, the number of

people on the Jobseeker benefit has risen by almost 2000.

This rise coincides with a 21 per cent drop in the number of benefit sanctions imposed.

These numbers are concerning given that between 2011 and last year, under the previous National-led government, more than 70,000 beneficiaries moved off the benefit and into work, and the number of children living in benefit-dependent households reduced by 60,000.

The number of people on the Jobseeker benefit should be continuing to fall, not climbing, and New Zealanders should be concerned at this increase in dependence on the state.

Fewer sanctions isn’t a sign that more people on benefits are being compliant. It is a sign that this Government is failing to ensure that beneficiaries are fulfilling their end of the bargain.

Sanctions are not imposed on benefits lightly.

In order for someone to have their benefit cut or reduced, they must repeatedly fail to meet their obligations.

We know benefit sanctions are an effective tool to help people into work, with 95 per cent of people who receive a formal warning meeting their obligations within four weeks.

The aim isn’t to be tough on beneficiaries.

People are better off in paid work so they can live independent lives and provide a better future for themselves and their children.

If the Government decides that mutual obligations shouldn’t exist, or shouldn’t be enforced, the incentives to get into work reduce significantly.

This signals a return to a system where the Government simply hands out cash and sends people on their way.

These latest figures should be a warning to the Government – a softening of mutual obligations will mean fewer people in work and an increase in the servicing of misery.

People’s lives are improved when they get off a benefit and into work and that must continue to be encouraged.

Unfortunately, this Government is showing they have no expectations or aspirations for people to get back on their own two feet.

Spears starts Euro tour

People sunbathe on a beach during a hot summer day in Barcelona, Spain. Hot air from Africa is bringing a heat wave to Europe, prompting health warnings about Sahara Desert dust and exceptionally high temperatures in Spain and Portugal.

Fans went wild as Britney Spears marked her return to the UK at the country’s biggest LBGT Pride festival by dancing with a rainbow flag. The popstar appeared at Brighton Pride on stage at the weekend waving the LGBT symbol during the encore of her headline act before blowing kisses to the crowd.

Organisers anticipated up to 100,000 fans flooded in to Preston Park to watch her perform. The performance kick starts her Europe tour and marks her first time on stage on UK soil since 2011.

Europe still sizzling Portugal and Spain are sweltering in a southern European heatwave that has produced near-record temperatures – with the hot conditions threatening to stick around for days to come.

The extreme weather, caused by an influx of hot air from Africa, is also carrying loads of dust from the Sahara Desert across some parts of the continent.

Portugal has issued red health alerts for extreme heat for more than half the country, with thermometers approaching 46C on Saturday.

The country’s highest ever recorded temperature was 47.4°C in 2003.

Spain also issued warnings of extreme heat for its southern areas, with temperatures expected to reach 45°C in the cities of Seville, Huelva, Badajoz and Cordoba.

Spain’s all-time record of 46.9°C was set in Cordoba in July 2017.

In southern Portugal, the town of Evora was almost at a standstill on Saturday as only a few foreign tourists dared to venture out to take photographs of the Roman ruins called Diana’s Temple.

Across the Iberian Peninsula in Barcelona, where the stifling air barely stirred during the night, Spaniards took to the

beach with families and friends, along with swarms of sweating tourists.

Those who could not make it to the sea had cold drinks under large umbrellas in city squares. Others doused their faces and necks in public water fountains, or simply pulled down the shutters and stayed at home.

Health officials issued reminders about the dangers that extreme heat can pose, especially for the elderly and the young.

The rest of Spain, including the normally wet and temperate northwestern region of Galicia, was also punished by the sun and heat.

The heat wave broke local temperature records at eight places in Portugal on Friday. It also played a part in the deaths of two men, one in Barcelona and the other in the southern Spanish region of Murcia, according to Spanish authorities.

The hot, dry conditions have led to several wildfires in Portugal.

Nearly 700 firefighters and 10 waterdumping aircraft are fighting the biggest outbreak, which has burned 1000 hectares (2470 acres) near the town of Monchique in the southern Algarve region.

“It’s a very serious situation of extreme

heat,” Portuguese president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said.

Meanwhile, the French energy company EDF says it halted a fourth nuclear reactor on Saturday, this time one at the country’s oldest nuclear plant at Fessenheim in eastern France.

In a statement, EDT said the Fessenheim nuclear reactor was temporarily shut down. Since Thursday, four French nuclear reactors in three power plants near the Rhine and the Rhone Rivers, including Fessenheim, have had to be temporarily shut down. EDF said the decision was made to avoid overheating the rivers.

Nuclear power plants use water from the rivers to cool down the temperatures of their reactors before sending the water back into the rivers.

Rivers that are unusually warm can experience mass fish die-offs, which has happened in Germany in the past week.

The World Meteorological Organisation said continental Europe’s heat record is 48°C, set in Greece in 1977.

Forecasts indicate that the hot air from Africa, which turned parts of the sky a dark yellow hue because of the dust it carried, will not abate until early next week. - PA

Bluebird returns to water after 50 years Bluebird, the hydroplane that reached record-breaking speeds, has returned to the water for the first time in more than 50 years after it crashed killing its pilot, Donald Campbell.

The jet-powered boat successfully floated in a loch on the Isle of Bute in Scotland on Saturday, in an operation watched by his daughter Gina.

Campbell died aged 45 on Coniston Water in January 1967 when the boat, travelling at more than 300mph, flipped into the air and disintegrated as he attempted to beat his own record.

Scenes were tense as the team struggled to get the Bluebird K7 into the water at Loch Fad. Project manager Bill Smith, who has worked on bringing up the wreck and restoring it for 22 years, hailed the achievement.

“It was like someone was making a Donald Campbell movie and they’d left a prop bobbing around – it was pretty good,” he said. “I had a big jump up and down, a clap on the back, but I wasn’t going to burst into tears or any silliness like that.”

intact, was pulled from the lake in Cumbria, north west England along with the wreckage from the depths in 2001.

Volunteers have worked to restore the boat to near its original state, but they said the engine had to be replaced.

The team hopes to make full displays in a fully-completed vessel a year later following the flotation test.

Having broken eight world speed records on water and land in the 1950s and 1960s, Campbell was attempting to break his own water speed record of 276mph when he was killed.

Wedding for Meghan Britain’s Prince Harry has assumed wedding duties once again – this time attending the nuptials of his childhood friend as best man. Harry, who was star of the show just weeks ago, stayed lowkey in morning dress and sunglasses as he accompanied Charlie van Straubenzee into St Mary the Virgin Church in the village of Frensham, in the county of Surrey. His wife the Duchess of Sussex attended separately and waved to crowds of well-wishers as she entered.

Stewart returning Patrick Stewart has announced he is finally returning to the Star Trek franchise for the first time in more than 20 years.

The star took to Twitter to make the announcement, confirming he will return as his original Star Trek: The Next Generation character Captain Jean-Luc Picard. “It is an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him,” the actor tweeted. The new series will be spearheaded by Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Alex Kurtzman.

Magic meets Irish dance

Magic tricks meet modern Irish dance in a unique and “explosive” event next month.

Celtic Illusion is coming to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on September 15 and it would be a surprise if anyone in the audience didn’t leave wowed, said director, producer, choreographer and lead dancer Anthony Street.

Think mind bending magic tricks, an enthralling soundtrack and some of the fastest tap dancing in the world, all neatly wrapped up in a cheeky, romantic storyline.

Street said it is the only show in the world to fuse Irish dancing and illusion – and it’s been a winning combination.

Since first premiering in Australia during 2011, the show has regularly performed to sell-out audiences across the globe.

Street, a Melbourne construction worker by day and performer by night, said he started magic at an early age and had always dreamed of having a magic show of some form.

“I was at a big fair when I was little and I saw this magician, and I was just instantly hooked,” he said.

But he wasn’t sure how to balance that with his second love, Irish dancing.

“So I thought. why not do the whole combo?”

The show has become more and more popular since its launch and has been constantly evolving.

“I’m always looking for what the audience likes, what they react to,” Street said.

“I’ve noticed that sometimes it’s the little things – like if a handkerchief goes flying across the stage, that often

gets a bigger wow than the big disappearing act.”

He said he is always looking to push the dancing to the next level, to make it more exciting.

He explained, for example, that traditional Irish dancing requires arms to be kept close to the sides of the body, but the Celtic Illusion dancers have crafted their own style, with much more arm movement.

The show also boasts a captivating soundtrack, courtesy of a music team who Street said have managed to capture the mood and beats he wanted, and churn them into “amazing pieces of music.”

In the music team are Angela Little, who co-composed Baz Luhrman’s film Australia, and Steve Skinner, who has arranged and produced for artists like Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder and the Broadway musical Rent.

Street said the team of producers and performers are very excited to make their debut in Ashburton, where audiences can expect a high energy, jam-packed, dance and magic spectacle.

He dreams of the show going for as long as he’s alive, and is eyeing up the end goal of Vegas – and ideally, a residency.

“The ultimate dream goal – and I feel like it’s getting closer and closer – is to be the biggest illusion show in the world.”

Celtic Illusion will dance into the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on September 15 and tickets are now on sale through Ticket Direct.

With castles dotted along the backdrop, a cruise is the only way to do the sights justice.

Gliding down the Rhine in style D

reamily gazing out from my private balcony onboard MS Emerald Sun, every bend in the river revealed another cultural gem.

Like a living history book, a river cruise on the Rhine is a pixel-burning photo shoot.

Plying the Amsterdam to Basel route, leisure seekers share one of the world’s busiest shipping rivers with a floating pageant

Gliding on the Rhine River is a classic cruise destination where dozens of robber-baron castles await, as Mike Yardley discovered. of commerce, with barge after barge packed to the gunnels with freight.

I gawped at gleaming new Japanese cars flowing down from Amsterdam, as sparkly German models for export, head north.

After departing Koblenz, the starring attraction of the Rhine Gorge soon beckoned, housing the river’s crown jewels within a 60 kilometre section, until you reach Bingen.

The essence of its charm is the

harmonious mingling of nature’s elements, with evocative human additions, adding frissons of delight all the way.

Jagged hills and projecting cliffs interact with perilously steep vineyards and tiny villages dotted with half-timbered houses, snuggled along the riverbank.

An eternal blue sky and gentle May sunshine accentuated the setting, as we glided by dozens of castles and fortresses, encrusting the steep hillsides flanking the river, like time-honoured sentinels.

Forty-six castles in fact, many reaching back nearly a millennium, each boasting their own distinctive back-story, although many of them were informally known as robber-baron castles.

The Germany we know today resembled 300 independent little countries in the middle ages, including scores of silly little kingdoms governing the Rhine.

A passing barge had to pay tolls to each robber baron castle, if they wanted to get through.

Just imagine it. Fast forward to today and these once rapacious and palatial cash-cows spangle the skyline with timeless imperious wonder.

Many were rebuilt after the notion of doing a Grand Tour of Europe became feverishly fashionable among English elites in

the Victorian age.

But some have withstood the test of time unmolested, like the 900-year-old Marksburg Castle – built so high up, it was impervious to attack.

Some of the Rhine castles, particularly the glorious towers and turrets masterpiece of Stolzenfels, also served as a design inspiration for many of the 19th century neo-Gothic fantasy Bavarian castles, including Neuschwanstein.

You can even stay inside some of these storied structures.

Rheinfels Castle, above St Goar, was once the largest fortress in the Rhine Gorge or Middle Rhine. First constructed in 1245, it withstood repeated attacks until 1791 under Napoleon.

The romantic ruins of the castle now include a hotel and a tour of the battlements with its underground passages is enthralling. Stahleck Castle in Bacharach now houses a youth hostel.

As we floated by this fairytale world of legends and confections, bristling with crenellations, one particular story made me chuckle.

The Mouse Tower is a column like castle on a river island, which ended up as the roost of the nasty Archbishop of Mainz, in the 10th century.

Kicking back on a sun lounger on the deck of a cruise boat is the only way to really soak in the sights.

The story goes his tower was besieged by thousands of mice, as rapacious as he was greedy, and they ate him alive.

But the most famous legend is the tale of Lorelei, a beautiful maiden who drowned for love and became a mermaid.

It’s said that her seductive song lures boatmen to their deaths and their vessels down to the riverbed.

You’ll find her statue on a narrow strip of land jutting into the river between St Goar and St Goarshausen, about 26 kilometres from Rudesheim.

Lording above the narrowest and deepest part of the Rhine is the dramatic Lorelei rock, which is the most difficult stretch to navigate, with treacherous currents, and probably the source of the legend.

Further downstream are the killer reefs called the Seven maidens. The story goes the prince of Schonburg Castle had

seven spoilt daughters who always dumped men because of their shortcomings. After inviting seven knights up to the castle, his daughters refused to choose any of them to marry, escaping in a riverboat, only to be turned into the seven rocks that form the reef.

Throughout the medieval age, the reef was apparently referred to, as local parents warned their children not to be picky!

Equally enchanting are the soaring wine terraces that rise up from the river to spectacular heights.

The vineyards date back to Roman times and the Rheingau wine region is considered as Germany’s most prestigious, bounded by Wiesbaden and Lorch on the right bank.

Riesling is the dominant variety, with south-facing protected slopes and the fact that the river acts as a heat mirror.

Around Assmannshausen, the

slate-containing soil in these delightfully wreathed terraced hillsides also produces splendid pinot noir.

Suitably, over dinner later that evening, we saluted our day of gorging on the Rhine’s timeless treasures with some winning vintages.

Few changes likely for ABs

Young fans dressed head to toe in green swarmed onto the field after the final whistle blew in Saturday’s Mid Canterbury Rugby Watters Cup final.

The team they’d been in full voice supporting for the past 80 minutes had just won the Watters Cup outright for the first time in almost two decades, after beating Southern in a hard-fought final 28-24.

Celtic had last made the final in 2012, where they lost to Methven, and they shared the biggest prize in Mid Canterbury Rugby with Southern after a drawn final in 2006, but it was 18 long years since they’d won the cup outright, so the jubilant scenes that followed that final whistle were no surprise.

It had been Celtic’s day right from the outset.

Light on finals experience compared to Southern, Celtic’s coach Shane Enright had pegged his side as the underdogs heading into the clash, but they didn’t start like underdogs.

Influential first-five Nathan McCloy crossed for the game’s

opening try with barely four minutes gone, awarded after a chat between referee and assistant referee as to whether he actually grounded the ball.

The decision went his way, and he added the extras to give Celtic a 7-0 lead, before centre Isireli Masiwini went in under the posts for the side’s second try barely three minutes later.

They were down 14-0 within 10 minutes, struggling to get their hands on the ball, and had lost prop Aaron Chudleigh – who had been a try-scoring machine for them this season – to a knee injury, but Southern were by far the more experienced side when it came to finals rugby, and eventually that showed.

Southern’s Hamish McCulloch crossed for a try to put his side on the board at the 30-minute mark, and as Southern’s experienced forward pack wound into full gear, they got another through Jon Dampney to narrow the gap to just 14-12.

A string of penalties against Celtic late in the first half resulted in the sin-binning of Angus Lindsay and with their opposition down to 14, Southern pounced

and took the lead through a try to hooker Angus McKenzie to take a 17-14 lead into the break.

They were still down to 14men, but Celtic started the second half like a team determined, and a barging captain’s run by Danny Hurley ended with him dotting down for his side’s third try of the final which gave them the lead back 21-17.

They soon found themselves under the pump again though, with Southern exerting huge pressure, which eventually told when McCulloch crossed for his second try on the 67-minute mark put Southern back in the lead 24-21.

A penalty or a dropped goal would have tied things up and potentially brought the 10-minutes of extra time – introduced after another Watters Cup final draw two years ago between Southern and Methven – in to play.

But Celtic didn’t want a draw.

Awarded three kickable penalties with less than 10 minutes to play, Celtic turned each one down, bravely opting for a scrum against the strong Southern forward pack for the first one and

taking quick taps for the other two.

It was from that second one that Celtic found themselves with an overlap out wide and they got the ball to winger Paovale Sofai to score the try that would seal the deal.

Coach Enright said he knew Southern wouldn’t be easybeats, so getting off to the kind of start his side did was perfect.

“The first 20 minutes was probably what we dreamed of,” Enright said.

And to see the sea of kids running onto the field at the end to congratulate their heroes made that winning feeling even better.

“Ged Rushton (Mid Canterbury Rugby president) came to see me afterwards and he said he’d never seen scenes like that before, and that’s great because that’s what it’s all about,” Enright said.

In his losing captain speech Southern’s Eric Duff said Celtic were simpler hungrier for the win, while Celtic captain Danny Hurley paid tribute to his team.

“We’ve tracked well the last few weeks and I’m proud of the culture the boys have created,” Hurley said.

Picking the All Blacks squad for the June tests was a touch taxing for the selectors in the end as they struggled to settle on their loose forward options and overall positional mix.

But the make-up of their Rugby Championship squad which will be announced today shouldn’t really be one that takes them terribly long to make.

The only major differences now compared with June are that Kieran Read has recovered from injury, while Dane Coles will come right at some stage during the competition.

Read, obviously, will return to captain the team and with Jordan Taufua – who was in the 33-man squad in June – out with a broken arm, there is potential for that to be a straight swap.

The All Blacks had seven loose forwards in the June squad and three locks.

They may look to redress that balance – dropping a loosie to make-way for one of Patrick Tuipulotu or Jackson Hemopo.

For much of the last three years the All Blacks have been content with just three locks in their squad and have frequently not had a specialist on the bench.

With Scott Barrett’s proven ability to play at blindside flank – albeit probably only against South Africa and Argentina where the tests will be slower but more physical – and Vaea Fifita’s potential to get by at lock, they have some flexibility in how they select the back five of the forwards.

Tuipulotu brings a damaging power with him and when he’s fit – which has only been irregularly in the last three years – the selectors like to have him on hand as his skills can be high value off the bench against the Springboks in particular.

If they do bring back the Blues lock, it would most likely be at the expense of one of Luke Whitelock or Shannon Frizell.

Presumably Liam Coltman will be named as the third hooker until Coles has some match fitness behind him.

And that is most likely it for possible changes.

Sonny Bill Williams will be named in a five-strong midfield – the same group that were used in June.

Matt Todd, who was called in as injury cover in June, is heading to Japan for one season and won’t be available and if there were going to be any changes to the back three, they most likely would have been signalled in the wider training squad that assembled in Christchurch last week.

The All Blacks had a training camp for those players not in the Crusaders and the back five asked to attend were Ben Smith, Nehe Milner-Skudder, Rieko Ioane, Waisake Naholo and Jordie Barrett.

Those five will almost certainly be the chosen five on Monday with the Crusaders’ impressive David Havili and George Bridge potential call ups if there are injuries.

St Bede’s too big, too fast, too strong The Mid Canterbury Combined first XV went down 47-3 to St Bede’s College at the Ashburton College field on Saturday. The loss to the currently third placed side in Canterbury secondary school rugby’s UC Championship – which featured Ashburton’s Felix Harnett – left Mid Canterbury Combined with just one more shot at getting a win on the board this season. That would come this Saturday, at home, to Nelson College. Nelson College beat Lincoln Combined 38-0 on Saturday. The biggest talking point of the UC Championship on Saturday was Rangiora High School’s shock win over competition leaders Christchurch Boys’ High School 35-33.

Crusaders not slowing down

By Daniel Gilhooly The Crusaders have warned their second coming as Super Rugby’s kingpins isn’t over.

The most dominant team in the competition’s history made it nine titles in 22 years with their typically ruthless 37-18 defeat of the Lions in the final in Christchurch on Saturday night.

Defending their title with virtually the same team who tasted glory against the Lions in Johannesburg a year earlier, the Crusaders are set to trot out close to an identical group in 2019.

Bursting with All Blacks forwards and some of the premier young backline talent in New Zealand, it seems even now it will take something special to prevent Scott Robertson’s men from claiming a hat-trick.

The charismatic coach told journalists his mind was “already wandering” to next year after a compelling display in the decider.

Before that, he was happy the Crusaders had reclaimed their status as indisputable competition top dogs. They went without silverware for eight years under predecessor Todd Blackadder before Robertson sparked them into life last season.

Retiring prop Wyatt Crockett and Bordeaux-bound winger Seta Tamanivalu won’t be back next season.

Winners are grinners – the triumphant Crusaders celebrate with the trophy.

Five-eighth Richie Mo’unga was otherwise licking his lips at the thought of playing in the same star-studded team, supported by a host of players who had made their Super Rugby debut this season.

“We’ve had to rely on a lot of our depth and no matter who we called upon, regardless of the age,

the number on the back, they were able to do a job,” Mo’unga said.

“When you’ve got the players that we do, we’re at a stage now where we just want to express ourselves.”

Mo’unga’s brilliant season ended with a man-of-the-match display in the final.

Yet while he is a sure selection in

the All Blacks squad for the Rugby Championship named on Monday, he is still unlikely to earn a test debut in the two opening Bledisloe Cup Tests.

The 24-year-old said he would remain patient and reflect on what he had achieved over the past six months.

inated vast chunks of a brutal decider but couldn’t match the composure and killer instinct of the hosts.

On the back of another exceptional performance from fiveeighth Mo’unga, the Crusaders scored four tries to two to defend their crown.

Mo’unga, who landed all seven shots at goal, made another claim for an All Blacks jersey as his general play hit the sublime level of last week’s semi-final win over the Hurricanes.

However, he didn’t have the freedom of a week ago as the Lions pack took it to their vaunted All Blacks-laden opposites in search of a maiden title.

They had to settle for a runners-up finish for a heartbreaking third-straight season.

Last year they were beaten 2517 in a Johannesburg final by a Crusaders team who have made an art-form of winning play-off matches.

Mo’unga wasn’t surprised to hear his team were forced to make 180 tackles.

“Defence goes to show just how much we love each other, how much we care,” he said.

“We knew the Lions were going to keep coming and they did.

“To invest so much and give every bit of yourself, for it to pay off, it’s just an awesome way to finish the season.”

Hampstead stays unbeaten

Two Mid Canterbury teams will head into the finals of the Mid/ South Canterbury senior hockey competition as the teams to beat after finishing top of their respective competitions on Saturday.

At the end of three full rounds Hampstead finished unbeaten at the top of the women’s competition to set up a semi-final clash with Cambridge, while Wakanui topped the standings for the men and would take on Northern Hearts in their semi-final.

Hampstead had the more convincing finish to round robin, beating Craighhead 8-0 thanks to three goals to Hannah Mowat, two to Cindy Lowe and one each to Emma Mealings, Jenna Turnbull and Sarah Hayman in Timaru on Saturday.

But coach Rex Turnbull wasn’t getting ahead of himself.

“We still have plenty to work on, but I don’t think you’ll ever get the perfect game,” Turnbull said.

Darren Lockyer has labelled South Sydney as NRL premiership favourites and livewire hooker Damien Cook their X-factor. Cook spearheaded the Rabbitohs’ 30-20 win over Melbourne, restoring them to top spot before Friday’s blockbuster clash with the Sydney Roosters. The 27-year-old is amidst a career year which has seen him play a crucial role in NSW’s breakthrough State of Origin series win and looks certain to inherit Cameron Smith’s Australian No.9 jersey.

After winning the first round, and finishing top after all three rounds, Hampstead had already locked two trophies away in their trophy cabinet this season, and the McLay Cup awaited the winner of the final in two weeks’ time.

“That’s the one we really want, the last one, the others are all just bonuses along the way,” Turnbull said.

“It’s no good going through the season unbeaten if you lose the one that matters.”

Wakanui had also locked the men’s McCosker Trophy away for the summer after topping the men’s competition points table, despite finishing the season with a 4-all draw with Cambridge on Saturday.

They’d now take on Northern Hearts in the semi-final, with the winner to go straight into the final to play for the Walker and Hall Shield, leaving the loser to play again against the winner of the three (Temuka) versus four (Cambridge) match.

Wakanui were made to work hard to salvage their draw on Saturday.

After Wakanui opened the scoring through a penalty corner nine minutes in, Cambridge struck back with two field goals, before Wakanui slotted a field goal of their own to make it 2-all at half time.

Cambridge converted a stroke early in the second half to make it 3-2, before a reverse stick boomer from Scott Marshall levelled the scores once again.

A fourth goal from a penalty corner put Wakanui back in front with 13 minutes to play, but with six-minutes to go Cambridge put the equaliser into the back of the net to see the game finish in a 4-all draw.

Mid Canterbury’s third senior team, the Hampstead/Collegians senior women’s team, finished the round robin with a 3-0 loss to Cambridge in Ashburton on Saturday.

They had finished bottom of the table and would play sec-

ond to last placed Craighead this weekend.

The winner of that match would then go on to play the loser of the three versus four game (Geraldine v Timaru Girls’ High School), while the loser would give the winner of the one versus two game a match heading into the final.

The loser of the one versus two game, and the winner of the three versus four game would then play for the right to take the second spot in the final.

Geraldine and Timaru Girls’ High School also played each other on Saturday, with Geraldine taking a 3-1 win to give them a boost heading into their rematch this weekend.

Geraldine were the only team to have come close to beating the powerful Hampstead side this season, having drawn with them twice, but Cambridge gave Hampstead a run for their money two weeks ago, with Hampstead eventually taking a narrow 3-2 win.

England beat India Ben Stokes has taken the key wicket of Virat Kohli and finished on 4-40 as England beat India in the first cricket test by 31 runs. The 1000th test match for England was evenly balanced as India resumed day four at Edgbaston on 5-110 in their second innings, chasing 194 for victory. India were all out for 162 when Pandya was caught by Alastair Cook off Stokes. England scored 287 in their first innings and India made 274 in reply, with Kohli hitting 149. India then dismissed England for 180 in their second innings. The second test starts at Lord’s on Thursday.

Just days out from heading to America to take up a basketball scholarship at a Tennessee university, Ashburton’s Josh Lowe will get the opportunity to test his skills against one of America’s top university sides.

The Saint Mary’s university team from New York was currently in New Zealand on a tour and Lowe had been asked to be part of a Mainland Eagles team to play

them both tonight and tomorrow night in Christchurch.

The call-up came just a few days ago, much to Lowe’s surprise.

“I was planning on going up to watch (tonight’s game) already and literally just before I was going to buy tickets I got a message asking if I would play,” Lowe said.

The 18-year-old was looking forward to the opportunity ahead of his departure for America on Sunday.

He was heading to Lee Univer-

sity in Tennessee where he would form part of the university’s basketball team, the Flames, when the American school year began in a couple of weeks.

The Flames were an NCAA division II School and they invited Lowe for a visit earlier this year while he was training at the Impact Basketball Academy in Sarasota, Florida. He impressed, and he was offered the scholarship.

Lowe, a towering 6’8”, said he was feeling a mixture of excite-

ment and nerves, but was excited to get the chance to really test his skills against Saint Mary’s before he headed to the States.

Pip Johnston, who had coached Lowe for three years in the Ashburton College basketball team, said the games would be a good chance for Lowe to see the quality of the division I US sides.

Johnston and Lowe played together for the Checkers club in Christchurch, and Johnston said Lowe’s game had completely

changed from last year.

He had become a lot more aggressive, had a lot more confidence on his own shot, and his footwork had improved.

“He could make it to the Tall Blacks one day, he has the right mindset about playing,” Johnston said. “He has a bright future in basketball.”

Both tonight’s game, and tomorrow night’s, would be played at Cowles Stadium in Christchurch.

On track for Grand National The old-timer Amanood Lad took a step toward achieving the dream result when scoring a fortuitous win in the NZI Koral Steeplechase (4250m) at Riccarton on Saturday.

It’s a day Paul Nelson will never forget as the win by the 14-yearold credited him with his 200th training success.

“He’s won the Great Northern Steeples and the Wellington Steeples and it would be nice if he could win all three big ones,” the Hastings trainer said, referring to the Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodge Grand National Steeplechase (5600m) which will be run at the Riccarton course next weekend.

Amanood Lad was right in contention early in the run home, but coming to the last fence Notabadrooster had swept to the front and looked likely to score while Chocolate Fish was unleashing a strong finish.

Just as Notabadrooster’s supporters were ready to celebrate, he came to grief on landing over the last obstacle and Chocolate Fish was checked when having to leap the fallen horse.

Meantime, Amanood Lad rallied again on the inside and took the lead for rider Aaron Kuru and stuck on strongly to win by a half neck from Chocolate Fish, who did well to recover and finish strongly ahead of The Big Opal and Kings Deep.

“It’s bad luck for Chris (Notabadrooster’s trainer Chris Faulkner), but we know about not jumping the last,” said Nelson.

“You’ve got to marvel at this old horse.

Young Japanese apprentice jockey Taiki Yanagida may have some good-natured ribbing coming his way this morning after he guided the Lee Somervell-trained Stradivarius to victory at Te Rapa on the weekend. Yanagida is apprenticed to the Matamata training partnership of Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott and it was stable runner Andoyas who Stradivarius held out in a desperate finish.

Somervell offered the mount to Yanagida after the O’Sullivan-Scott team opted for experienced jockey Michael Coleman to ride Andoyas.

It was an inspired decision as Yanagida produced a first-class effort to guide Stradivarius home after leading throughout. - NZME

Great Northern beckons Trainer Kevin Hughes has big plans for handy flat performer Speedy Jax after he broke his maiden status over the bigger fences in Saturday’s maiden steeplechase at Riccarton. Raced in the familiar colours of his owner/breeders Don and Dame Wendy Pye, the winner of seven races on the flat and once over the hurdles looks to have a future as a steeplechaser judging by the way he put his rivals away on the weekend.

Black-type breakthrough

Amanood Lad gets it by a narrow margin after a 4250 metre slog in the NZI Koral Steeplechase.

“We’re very lucky to get him to train.

“Thanks to Ben (Foote, former trainer) and the owners for letting us be part of it.

“The aim is to take the big three and it would be great if he could do it.”

Amanood Lad became the oldest horse to win the Koral Steeplechase and in winning he gave Nelson his second triumph in the race.

Nelson’s other Koral Steeplechase winner was No Hero, who completed the Koral – Grand

National Steeplechase double in 2005.

Nelson has also won the Grand National Steeplechase with Just A Swagger in 2008, but no victory would be sweeter than Amanood Lad winning again next Saturday.

Platinum Command landed a timely win to boost her broodmare value when charging home to take the Gr.3 Winning Edge Presentations Winter Cup (1600m) at Riccarton on Saturday. Platinum Command is in the twilight of her racing career and changed hands a few months ago with one of the original owners, Neville McAllister, benefitting from her biggest win by remaining in the ownership to breed from the seven-year-old daughter of Red Giant. It was the 10th win and first black-type success for Platinum Command.

SVG a thief in the night

By Oliver Caffrey Another safety car calamity has put a dent in Scott McLaughlin’s hopes of securing a maiden Supercars title.

Just as happened at Winton, the Ford flyer struggled from a restart and conceded a lead and lose a race that appeared his at Sydney Motorsport Park on Saturday night.

The safety car allowed Red Bull Holden rival Shane van Gisbergen to capitalise, entering all-out aggressive mode to fly past McLaughlin and claim a thrilling and historic race under lights.

McLaughlin, who started in pole, dropped further behind as van Gisbergen’s team-mate Jamie Whincup to overtook him with three laps to go and ended up in third.

With the 300km stanza at Eastern Creek worth double points, van Gisbergen’s fifth win of the season cut the gap on McLaughlin in the standings to only 89 points.

With six rounds to go, van Gisbergen is hitting top-form to create pressure on his fellow New Zealander at the top and put doubt in McLaughlin’s mind after the

A complex slow moving trough with embedded lows and fronts, weakens over northern and central New Zealand today. A weak ridge lies over the South Island, as another front approaches to move east over the island on Tuesday. A trough over the North Island moves away to the east early tomorrow.

Hanan Shield proves elusive

Mid Canterbury’s A netball team fell agonisingly short of coming home from Timaru with the Hanan Shield in their possession yesterday.

With only three teams contesting the annual tournament it was always going to be close, and after winning their first game but losing their second, Mid Canterbury could do nothing but watch as their fate was decided in the day’s final match between South Canterbury and North Otago.

Mid Canterbury had beaten South Canterbury but lost to North Otago, so heading into the day’s final match between South Canterbury and North Otago all three teams were in the running.

North Otago only needed to win to claim the shield, but if South Canterbury won by more than 14 they’d have won it, and if South Canterbury won but by less than 14, then Mid Canterbury would have won it.

South Canterbury led for much of the match and it was tight, which gave Mid Canterbury hope.

“We were doing the numbers manically on the sideline,” Mid Canterbury coach Claire Tappin said.

But North Otago came back and won it 33-30, to claim the title for the second year running.

It was disappointing, but Tappin was proud of how her team performed.

A relatively inexperienced side, Mid Canterbury were thrown a

late curveball when their pocket-rocket wing attack Shannon Stockdale had to pull out sick on Saturday night.

Non-travelling reserve Victoria Lewthwaite got the last-minute call-up and Tappin had to reshuffle her line-up, as Stockdale had been their only first-choice wing attack.

In their opening win over South Canterbury, 32-20, Mid Canterbury put in a strong defensive effort which their attacking end capitalised on, Tappin said.

“We got a lot of turnover ball from Gina Woodhouse and Anna Holland, an absolutely huge number of turnovers from those girls, so that enabled us to have a nice, strong win there,” Tappin said.

At the other end of the court

goal shoot Olivia McLennan was on song, converting that ball into points.

In their 37-27 loss to North Otago though, Mid Canterbury were on the back foot from the start, losing all three of the first quarters by three goals, but they only lost the final quarter by one.

Tappin said Celtic B’s Hayley Duthie took to the court at half time and shot at 100 per cent, ensuring Mid Canterbury finished strong.

“North Otago were just a step ahead and drove onto the ball really well, and while we got a lot of turnover ball again we just couldn’t convert,” Tappin said.

Rachel Curd was another of the day’s standouts, Tappin said.

She played at centre instead of

her preferred goal defence, and then moved to wing attack to try and cover for Stockdale.

“I’m proud of the team that had a lot of girls making debuts and I’m really proud of the leadership of the team.

“Anna (Holland) and Gina (Woodhouse) were absolute stalwarts for both games and kept us in both of the games,” Tappin said.

Mid Canterbury umpire Heath Lyttle was also in action at the tournament, called in for the injured Kevin Opele, and he performed well. Opele not only missed the Hanan Shield tournament, but the netball umpire and rugby referee also had to withdraw from refereeing the Watters Cup final on Saturday due to injury.
