Vaccines roll out By Susan Sandys

Mid Canterbury GPs are urging residents to be immunised against the flu this winter as the 2019 vaccine is rolled out across the country. At the Tinwald Medical Centre this week, Peter Sheate said there was a simple reason for him being one of the first to be vaccinated this year. “I don’t want the flu,” the 80-year-old said. GP spokesperson for the district, Eti Avnit, echoed Health Minister David Clark’s advice to get immunised. She herself was immunised against the flu at her practice this week. She said the death rate from flu last year in New Zealand remained relatively low compared to outbreaks overseas and this was thanks to people getting immunised.
Clark said around 400 New Zealanders die each year from the disease and many more needed hospital treatment. The influenza immunisation programme began a little later this year, on April 1, to ensure that the vaccine continued to provide protection through to the peak of the flu season, usually in late winter. The vaccine will protect against four strains, including updated strains of influenza A(H3N2) and influenza B. Clark said he was one of more than a million who would take up the vaccine this year. The campaign was particularly focusing on people aged 65 and older. “Even fit and healthy people can get seriously ill from the flu, and for older people, a serious case can have a long-lasting impact on their quality of life and independence.”

Mental health reports ordered NZME Mental health reports have been ordered to explore whether the man accused of the Christchurch mosque attacks is mentally fit to enter pleas. The 28-year-old Australian national appeared via audio-visual link from custody in the High Court at Christchurch yesterday morning. Around 50 family members of the mosque attack victims filed into the courtroom to watch the proceedings. There were also more than two dozen reporters from New Zea-
land and around the world, along with eight police officers and several security staff. The alleged gunman appeared on the audio-visual link booth from prison unshaved, in a grey sweatshirt, with his hands handcuffed in front of him. He was attentive throughout proceedings, at times leaning forward to better hear what was being said. He looked around the screen with various camera angles that showed the lawyers, judge, and some of the media. The families and survivors in the public gallery were not visible

to him. When Justice Mander asked if he could hear what was being said, he nodded. The accused, whose address has been listed on charging documents as Andersons Bay in Dunedin. At the conclusion of the hearing, he gave a small nod before the registrar ended the video link transmission. None of the family members said anything from the public gallery. Afterwards, they were given a briefing to ensure they understood the legal process and lan-
guage used in court. Justice Mander also reminded journalists present that given legal proceedings are now under way, media need to be aware of the sub judice rule in any reports. Police on Thursday confirmed that the alleged shooter now faces 50 murder charges and 39 attempted murder charges. Police have said other charges are still under consideration. Crown prosecutor Barnaby Hawes confirmed the Crown has filed the charges. The defence team asked for a mental health expert to assess the accused under section 38 of the
Mental Health Act to determine whether the defendant is mentally fit or impaired and whether he is mentally able to enter pleas to the charges. Justice Cameron Mander ordered two health assessors’ reports, which defence lawyer Shane Tait said could take two to three months to complete. The judge stressed that the move was “normal procedure” and an “entirely ordinary and regular step” to be taken at this stage of the judicial process. The accused was remanded in custody to reappear in court on June 14.

Two Ashburton performers are taking audiences on a wild ride as they tear up the stage in Showbiz Christchurch’s production We Will Rock You. In the lead female role is musical theatre star Jane Leonard. The Nasda graduate is relishing playing the feisty and funny Scaramouche. At the young age of 26, Leonard has managed to do what remains a dream for most – make acting her fulltime job. She performs in productions throughout New Zealand, while also teaching drama at Impact Dance and Stage School in Christchurch. She said playing Elphaba in Wicked last year was one of the highlights of her career and in this latest professional role she was enjoying an audience connection. “What was surprising and awesome about this role is the relationship between the characters and audience,” she said. The former Ashburton College and Burnside High student said there were some similarities between herself and Scaramouche, as she was quite opinionated herself and related very much to the spirit of fighting for freedom of expression. This is something the characters find themselves doing in the totalitarian world which is the backdrop to We Will Rock You. “I kind of really resonate with the underdog myself, so this kind of hits home in lots of ways,” Leonard said. Also performing in We Will Rock You, is Jack Bubb. Fresh out of Ashburton College, the 18-year-old is in his first year of jazz school at Ara Institute in Christchurch, where his main

course focus is piano. Having landed a role in the ensemble as one of the Bohemians, Bubb plays Katy Perry. “When you are on stage you just have to be larger than life, big expressions, almost unnatural body movements, because they are not contained in any way, shape
or form, you have to overreact to everything,” Bubb said. Katy Perry is one of the characters as the Bohemians create what they think are authentic renditions of pop stars from times gone by. As they have just fragments of information to base their re-creations on, they do not
quite get it right when it comes to finer details such as gender. Bubb is not only performing during his on-stage segments, but is performing off-stage as well, one of a team providing backing vocals. It’s a demanding role vocally and he finds himself warming up
his singing chops throughout the day. After this year, Bubb has another two years at jazz school and ultimately he would like to be a session musician on a cruise ship. We Will Rock You opened at the Isaac Theatre Royal on March 29, and it runs to April 13.

Trail to celebrate 10th birthday by

It’s taken 10 years of hard work, but finally Ashburton has a riverside trail that stretches over 70 kilometres from the coast along both sides of the Hakatere River to a point well west of Ashburton. Creating that trail has involved a huge amount of co-operation between community groups, service clubs, sporting groups, Environment Canterbury and the Ashburton District Council. It’s a trail that has its origins in the 1975 New Zealand Walkways Act, with what was then planned to be a track for walkers, first proposed by the Ashburton Lions Club that year. Over the following three years letters were written, discussions were had and reports commissioned but it took until June 1980 before the construction of the walkway was signed off. Work on establishing the walkway was carried out by using people on the Project Employment Project (PEP), a scheme for the unemployed from 1980 to 1984 with the walkway officially opening to the public in April 1984. From day one, Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin has been a part of the project. Over those 10 years he has been involved as the track has grown from a walkway that ran from the Ashburton River Bridge to Hakatere Huts to a trail that welcomed walkers, cyclists and horse riders. As its use increased, the trail continued to develop with signif-

Beef, Environment Canterbury, Ashburton Rotary and the Ashburton District Council. The 4WD Club will take care of a new area being developed for members and the Ashburton Motorcyle group takes care of their own designated area. The Hakatere River Trail committee is made up of members of all user groups and meets regularly. Over the years a number of community open days have been held to encourage people onto the trails and another is planned for next summer. The days are designed for people to walk to the end of the track at the Hakatere Huts, with return transport provided. Most of the work on the southern side of the river has been carried out by Ashburton Rota-
ry members. Initially this track linked the Ashburton River bridge with Lake Hood, but it has now been extended as far west as Timaru Track pushing the trail out to 70km. This section of track links with another that runs around Lake Hood and walkers and riders now have the option of returning to the state highway either by the river track or a new roadside track developed by the council. That won’t be the end of the trail’s development, however, with Askin looking at ways to create a link on the northern section with the EA Networks Centre. This would take users from the mountain bike skills park through a stormwater swale and around land that will eventually become the centre’s playing fields to rejoin the track proper. There is a ton of potential in the riverside area for future developments, Ashburton District Council service delivery group manager Neil McCann said. With the addition of the dog park near the Resource Recovery Park, the riverside area now had a wide range of users, he said. “It’s about trying to get everyone together to best use the land down there and making it a complete recreation area.” The trail had come a long way in 10 years, McCann said. and he credits Askin with a large slice of that success. Providing off-trail areas for the four-wheel-drive vehicles and motor bikes that were now banned from the track has been one of the keys of its continued success and in ensuring the track stayed in good condition, he said. A large part of the development of the trail west of the river bridge had been carried out by mountain bike club members and that was a great addition to the overall track, McCann said. The trail covered land owned by Environment Canterbury and by the council and there had always been a good working relationship when it came to developments, he said. “It’s been 10 years of really good community co-operation and goodwill and there’s still heaps of potential out there.”

Gumboots fly at celebrity throw By Susan Sandys

Gumboots were flying, not to mention crashing, at a celebrity gumboot throw at EA Networks Centre yesterday. Wet weather forced the event inside, meaning competitors were under more pressure than ever. The corridor to EA Networks Centre Gym provided a relatively closed-in area, only a few metres wide and several metres high. Consequently, some gumboots went sailing – into the ceiling, into the wall, and over a partition between the corridor and front foyer. CEO of the Ashburton District Council Hamish Riach impressed most of all in breaking the boundaries, although, thankfully for ratepayers, not the fittings. One brush with the ceiling and a boot ending up in the foyer aside, his technique proved the best and he was the winner on the day, recording a huge distance of 20 metres. Ashburton College principal Ross Preece was not left behind when it came to providing a spectacle for onlookers, impressing with a double overarm swing. He claimed second place, while mayor Donna Favel was third, radio personality Phill Hooper fourth and visiting Kiwi cook Ally-
son Gofton fifth. Hooper thought he could have done better than his 15-metre effort. “I came down here expecting to win, so I’m very disappointed. Obviously I’m a natural athlete,” he said. Compere Ken, aka Lynda Topp, had plenty of gumboot throwing experience under his belt, and said Riach’s technique of folding down the top of the boot to make it more rigid helped him take out top place. Gofton was in town as part of a nationwide promotional tour for her new book The Baker’s Companion. EA Networks Centre Gym manager Anna Johnson said it was fantastic to see good support for the celebrity gumboot throw, and Gumboot Friday. People participating throughout the day yesterday contributed to a gold coin donation. Nationwide, all proceeds go to mental health charity I Am Hope, funding therapists and counsellors for children. “It’s never that comfortable wearing gumboots and that’s exactly what it feels like for youth that are struggling,” Johnson said. “And we are struggling to give them the resources they need.”

All is in readiness, with only the final touches to be made, ahead of the third instalment of the CanInspire Colour Run at Lake Hood tomorrow. But for the late starters, it’s not too late to join the other 500-odd entrants with today one of the final opportunities to get an entry in to the hugely popular event. Online entries closed at lunchtime yesterday and event spokesperson Liz Wells said that although slightly down on last year’s starters, there was still hope that the number would rise. “We’re hopeful of getting a few more through – there are opportunities for anyone who still wants to take part,” she said. The CanInspire team will be in the new rooms which are attached to the Tinwald War Memorial Hall from 10am-12 noon today and there was potential to enter at the registration area tomorrow prior to the event too. “We’d advise trying to get to there today as the morning of the event can be rather hectic,” Well said. Tomorrow will be the third time the event has been held locally and all funds raised are going directly back into the Mid Canterbury community through the CanInspire Charitable Trust.
A community focused event, the key goal of the run is for family fun for all ages and fitness levels. Wells said that they had increased the number of colour stations on the course for this year with two additional colours added. They sit alongside other popular features such as the rainbow road near the finish line in which contestants are showered in all variations of colour. While the event relied heavily on community buy-in through the way of entries, it also counted on a huge amount of support and this year that support has gone to the next level. “We have been simply amazed at the support we have received from around the community, it’s been remarkable. “Especially from our platinum sponsor, Canterbury Long Run Roofing Ashburton who have been so generous in their support of us and the event.” Organisers had been keeping on eye on the weather forecast for Sunday morning for most of this week but were pleased to see that after looking a little gloomy at one point it was back to looking like a perfect morning for a jog or stroll around Lake Hood. The event begins at 10am tomorrow morning.

Air Rescue $32,000 richer Mt Hutt Ski Area and Methven Lions Club representatives handed over $32,000 to the Canterbury and West Coast Air Rescue Trust this week. Trust CEO Christine Prince gratefully accepted the donation. The first $18,000 was raised at the annual Discover Mt Hutt day in March, where skifield staff and Lions members volunteered their time to open the mountain outside of the ski season.
The day itself raised an unprecedented $40,000, and the team happily pledged half the proceeds to the familiar red rescue chopper. Averaging three missions a day the helicopter covers the largest single geographical area in New Zealand and is a familiar sight in the Canterbury region. Ski area manager James McKenzie said the trust needed to raise $4 million every year. “So we are delighted to be able
to contribute to this vital community service,” McKenzie said. “For the past couple of years NZSki has supported the trust and we have a system set up whereby anyone purchasing a Mt Hutt pass can opt to add-on a donation to the charity. “The extra $14,000 shown on the cheque today is the sum of funds collected over the last 12 months, and we will continue to collect donations throughout our
upcoming winter season. The sheer amount generously gifted by our guests just highlights how far and wide the Air Rescue Trust is valued.” Lions president Bruce Holmes said the club had been able to share out the remaining funds from the open day to other causes within the local community, including St John and Search and Rescue. “It’s just what we do,” he said.
Mt Hutt Ski Area staff are hoping 20 centimetres of snow will not hold up summer construction. Workers on the mountain left early yesterday as snow continued to fall and build up on the access road. Manager James McKenzie said hopefully all the snow would have melted by Monday, so personnel could get back to installing snow-making equipment and pipelines, as well as constructing new trails and a ski tunnel. Ideally it would be mid-May before there were any more significant snowfalls, as that would be just in time for ski season opening on June 7. The snowfall this week follows a strong nor’wester on the mountain March 25 to 26, when wind speeds reached 200 kilometres per hour at the summit. A well-stropped small temporary building used for construction work, at the top of the quad chairlift, proved no match. “We are finding bits of that around the mountain at the moment,” McKenzie said.

Brian’s drive to succeed When a national speedway title goes on the line at Ashburton Speedway tomorrow, Ashburton driver Brian Maxwell will be one of those lining up for a shot at it. He spoke to the Guardian’s Erin Tasker this week about what it would mean to him to win that title.
B
rian Maxwell tries to make the most of every day because he knows he’s lucky to be here. So when the Ashburton 50-yearold hops behind the wheel tomorrow afternoon at Ashburton Speedway, he’ll have his eyes firmly fixed on a goal. That goal is to win the CTRA New Zealand Limited Saloons title and, if he does it, he’ll be over the moon, because right now he really doesn’t know what the future holds for him. Maxwell’s health isn’t the best. A kidney that he received more than 17 years ago in a transplant that both changed and saved his life, is failing. So, Maxwell is planning to make the most of what life holds, including out on the speedway track. Today, he’ll be one of the drivers on the starting grid eyeing up the CTRA (Circle Track Racing Association) New Zealand Limited Saloon Title at Ashburton Speedway. “I’ve said to people this is my last-ditch effort,” Maxwell said. “I’m running out of energy. I’ll be absolutely drained at the end of the day.” But, he’s determined to give it his best shot. Maxwell knows he’s lucky. He’d been on dialysis for four years due to the hereditary kidney disease that has affected so many members of his family and knows he was on borrowed time when he finally got a call to say there was a new kidney waiting for him. At the time the average lifespan of a transplanted kidney was around seven years, so the kidney he received from a deceased person all those years ago has served him well. He’s always known it wouldn’t last forever, though. “They’ve told me a year, but I know personally in myself that it’s within six months or a year,” Maxwell said. He’s been there before and knows what’s in front of him, but that doesn’t make it any easier. He’s hopeful it won’t go that far this time. He’s already put a call out to his Facebook friends to see if anyone out there might be willing to donate him a kidney when the time comes. Some have said yes, but whether they’ll be a match remains to be seen. “If I can get a transplant before it really craps out, it saves me like two operations in the process,” Maxwell said.
The kidney Maxwell received all those years ago wasn’t actually meant for him, but the person it was intended for was sick and unable to receive it. So one afternoon, Maxwell got the call that changed his life and its timing couldn’t have been better.
“I was six months out of a hole,” Maxwell said. He knows the lady who received the donor’s other kidney and hers was also still going strong all these years later. Maxwell said he knows how lucky he is, so has been determined over the years to take care of
his kidney and it has paid off. But that hasn’t stopped him from living his life at the same time. After years as a jet sprint driver and winning a South Island title in control of a boat, Maxwell turned his attention to speedway cars five or six years ago.
An engine builder by trade, Maxwell built an engine for a guy about seven years ago, who had a spare car at home. Maxwell brought it off him, rebuilt the engine, and never looked back. Now, he races a 1967 Camaro. It has a 353 cubic inch special Chevy

US pop singer-songwriter Lauv has announced a one-off New Zealand show in Auckland this November. Lauv, known for the single I’m So Tired with Troye Sivan, will perform at Shed 10, Queens Wharf on Wednesday, November 20. The show is part of the Australian leg of the singer’s “~how i’m feeling~” world tour. Supporting Lauv will be 18-year-old US singer Carlie Hanson. Lauv recently performed at the 2019 iHeart Radio Music Awards, where he was nominated for Best New Pop Artist.

Nose dive ‘unstoppable’ A doomed Ethiopian Airlines jet suffered from faulty readings by a key sensor, and pilots followed Boeing’s recommended procedures when the plane started to nose dive but could not avoid crashing, according to a preliminary report released yesterday by the Ethiopian government. The findings draw the strongest link yet between the March 10 crash in Ethiopia and an October crash off the coast of Indonesia, which both involved Boeing 737 Max 8 jetliners. All 346 people on the two planes were killed. Both planes had an automated system that pushed the nose down when sensor readings detected the danger of an aerodynamic stall, and it now appears that sensors malfunctioned on both planes. Boeing acknowledged that the sensor malfunctioned and
CEO Dennis Muilenburg said yesterday a new software update would prevent future incidents. “It’s our responsibility to eliminate this risk,” Muilenburg said in a video statement. “We own it, and we know how to do it.” Yesterday’s preliminary report, based on flight data and cockpit voice recorders on the Ethiopian Airlines jetliner, showed that the faulty sensor touched off a series of events that caused the pilots to lose control of the plane. The report from Ethiopia’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau said the sensor problems began about a minute after the plane was cleared for takeoff. It said air speed and altitude values on the left side of the Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max conflicted with data from the
right sensor, causing flight control problems. Eventually the pilots couldn’t keep the plane from plummeting to the ground, killing all 157 people on board. The problems are similar to those reported on the Indonesian Lion Air flight that crashed last October. Investigators found that software on that plane took readings from the sensor and pointed the nose down. Yesterday’s revelations raise questions about repeated assertions by Boeing and US regulators that pilots could regain control in some emergencies by following steps that include turning off an anti-stall system designed specifically for the Max, known by its acronym, MCAS. The Max has been grounded worldwide pending a software fix that Boeing is rolling out,
which still needs to be approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration and other regulators. In a statement, Boeing said that to make sure unintended activation of the MCAS system doesn’t happen again, it is developing software and “associated comprehensive pilot training” for the Max. The software update, Boeing said, adds layers of protection and will stop erroneous data from activating the system. Ethiopian investigators did not specifically mention the MCAS, but recommended that Boeing review “the aircraft flight-control system related to the flight controllability.” They also recommended that aviation officials verify that issues have been adequately addressed before allowing the planes to fly again. - AP

Ethiopia denies Assange expulsion claims A senior Ecuadorian official said no decision has been made to expel Julian Assange from the country’s London embassy despite tweets from Wikileaks that sources had told it he could be kicked out within “hours to days.” A small group of protesters and supporters of Wikileaks’ founder gathered yesterday outside the embassy in London where Assange has been holed up since August 2012. He has feared extradition to the US since WikiLeaks published thousands of classified military and diplomatic cables. Earlier, Wikileaks tweet-
ed: “BREAKING: A high level source within the Ecuadorian state has told @WikiLeaks that Julian Assange will be expelled within “hours to days” using the #INAPapers offshore scandal as a pretext – and that it already has an agreement with the UK for his arrest.” Another tweet said it had received a secondary confirmation from another high-level source. Detention extended A Japanese court yesterday approved the detention of former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn through April 14 after his fourth arrest over financial misconduct allegations. Ghosn was taken into custody on Thursday and is being held at the Tokyo Detention Centre. The detention request was approved by the Tokyo District Court, the court said in a statement. Prosecutors can ask for another 10-day extension. Ghosn, 65, was arrested November 19 and released March 6 on 1 billion yen ($8.9 million) bail. He says he is innocent of all allegations. - AP

Family devastated by hoax
Forest fire under control
Eight years after an Illinois boy disappeared, his family began to think that their nightmare might be over at last. A young man found wandering the streets of a Kentucky town claimed he had just escaped from two men in the Cincinnati area who held him captive for seven years. And he told police his name was Timmothy Pitzen. It didn’t seem possible that someone so far away could make up such a story. So for a day and a half, relatives waited and hoped for a breakthrough. Then came devastating word from the FBI: DNA tests showed that the person was not Timmothy, a boy from Aurora who vanished at age 6 in 2011, around the time of his mother’s suicide. “It’s like reliving that day all over again, and Timmothy’s father is devastated once again, as are we,” said the boy’s aunt Kara Jacobs, her voice choked with emotion. Authorities said the person claiming to be 14-year-old Timmothy was actually a 23-year-old ex-convict who was recently released from an Ohio prison after serving time for burglary and vandalism. ‘A really terrible event’ Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has finally given his first interview on the Christchurch shootings. Zuckerberg told ABC News that the mosque massacres, which saw 50 people slain as the gunman livestreamed to Facebook, “a really terrible event”. But the Facebook founder had mixed feelings about a delay, just as “live” TV is on a slight delay, when the idea was suggested by interviewer George Stephanopoulos if it would help. “You know, it might, in this case,” Zuckerberg replied. “But it would also fundamentally break what livestreaming is for people. Most people are livestreaming, you know, a birthday party or hanging out with friends when they can’t be together. And it’s one of the things that’s magical about livestreaming is that it’s bi-directional, right? So you’re not just broadcasting. You’re communicating. And people are commenting back. The two climbed into FryPitzen’s SUV and went on an adventure that included a visit to the Brookfield Zoo outside Chicago, a suburban Chicago resort and another resort in the Wisconsin Dells, a region that calls itself the Waterpark Capital of the World. The next day, the boy and his mother were seen leaving the Kalahari Resorts in the Dells. That was the last time the two were seen together. When Fry-Pitzen checked into a motel in Rockford, Illinois on May 13, she was alone, according to police. The next afternoon, her body turned up but with no sign of her son. A note she left said the boy was being cared for by someone who loved him in a place where he would never be found. In the first days of the search, police said they found a significant amount of blood in the SUV’s back seat, and tests confirmed it was the boy’s. That news initially terrified Anderson, but the boy’s father explained that his son had a history of nosebleeds and had suffered a serious one just days before he disappeared. - AP
Firefighters by yesterday morning had extinguished large parts of a forest fire burning in the mountainous South Korean region that hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics. It has destroyed 120 homes, forced thousands to flee, and killed one person, with another dying because of a falling object in the high winds fanning the flames. The fire likely started from a transformer spark near a resort in the town of Goseong and then spread to the nearby mountains, according to Choi Jin-ho, a fire captain at Gangwon Fire Headquarters. Gangwon province is about 210 kilometres northeast of Seoul. Videos posted to social media in South Korea showed tall flames rising from large areas of forest, the air filled with embers and debris as cars drove by the raging fire. News photos showed a burnt-out bus, fire engulfing a hill, and residents evacuating apartment complexes and filing into gyms. Choi said nearly 2400 people in Goseong and almost 1250 in the city of Sokcho were evacuated. - AP
Japan’s space agency said its Hayabusa2 spacecraft released an explosive onto an asteroid to make a crater on its surface and collect underground samples to find possible clues to the origin of the solar system.Yesterday’s crater mission is the riskiest for Hayabusa2, as it had to immediately get away so it won’t get hit by flying shards from the blast. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, said that Hayabusa2 dropped a “small carry-on impactor” made of copper onto the asteroid Friday morning, and that the spacecraft safely evacuated and remained intact. JAXA is analyzing further details. JAXA plans to send Hayabusa2 back to the site later, when the dust and debris settle, for observations from above and to collect samples from underground that have not been exposed to the sun or space rays. - AP
Blast site shut down Authorities are shutting down an eastern China industrial park after 78 people were killed last month by a chemical explosion, the city government said yesterday. Local departments have met to discuss how to eliminate chemical plants with low safety standards and severe pollution issues, Yancheng city said in an online statement, noting that the site of last month’s deadly blast — Xiangshui Chemical Industrial Park — will be completely shut down. - AP
Guam okays marijuana The governor of Guam has signed into law recreational use of marijuana on the US island territory. Gov. Suspects killed Brazilian police say they killed 11 people who were part of a gang of at least 25 people that raided two banks and tried to blow up their automatic teller machines on the outskirts of the country’s biggest city. No police officers were killed or wounded in the incident, and three suspects were arrested. A statement from Sao Paulo state police said the gang was about to set explosives to the ATM machines when officers arrived. The statement said the agents seized seven assault weapons, four pistols, explosives and bulletproof vests. - AP

Winter’s coming, ready or not T
here’s a certain feeling in the air at the moment and although no one might be quite yet ready to admit it – it certainly feels like winter is on its way. The wind chill factor out and about the district yesterday, coupled with the precipitation falling from the sky gave the entry into the weekend a rather bleak outlook. The good news though, is that it’s supposed to improve over today and tomorrow, but don’t go rushing to get the jandals and the stubbies back out just yet – it’s not going to be that warm. Winter, for all its coldness and grim weather, is an exciting time for this district though.
The prospect of snow falling on top of the mountain that towers over us brings a certain kind of excitement as thousands start to gear up and think about getting up onto the slopes for another ski season on top of Mt Hutt. Snow fell on the mountain late in the week and then picked up some rather bone-tingling winds too which would have sent
shivers through even the most staunch of folk. Mt Hutt is one of our greatest assets and its contribution to the Ashburton District should never be underestimated. The people it brings into our district and the money that they then in turn spend is a huge part of what makes us successful and the prospect of another good season of visitors is just what the doctor ordered leading into the season. Winter also means winter sport and we wrote last week about the return of the club rugby season last weekend and I’m pleased to say that a quick head count around the Methven Domain saw my estimate
of 200 spectators well and truly surpassed. But it’s also football, netball, indoor bowls and all variances of sports that help fill the colder months. So, while we might at times bemoan the impending nature of the latter stages of autumn and then winter, we should also take the time to appreciate it in some ways too. However, like everything in life, there are things that come with the change in season that need to be taken into account when tackling everyday life. There’s a story further up in today’s Guardian about locals getting the flu jab for the season and there’s other simple tasks
like cleaning out the chimney before you light it for the first time, making sure your car is prepared against the cooler mornings and even something as simple as getting the heat pump filter cleaned out before it really kicks into life. No one should have to be reminded about the dangers of winter when it comes to driving, our roads are busier, they can hold ice and water, so people need to drive with caution. So, be prepared this year as winter approaches and on that note, don’t forget to put the clocks back an hour tonight. You don’t want to be that person who shows up to work an hour early on Monday morning.

o there may have been times when I have hassled our esteemed elected members of parliament and perhaps portrayed them as bumbling bureaucrats. I may have on occasion taken out the fun stick and poked them with it, or concocted a verbal waterfall of rainbow randomness and showered them with it. Therefore, it may come as a slight raise of the left eyebrow that I must say I am grateful I’m not an apartment dweller from Epsom (reference to David Seymour’s comments on social housing and mental health). For the mocha loving urbanites of Manukau Road have undoubtedly the King of Klutz, the Smiling Son of Silliness, the Apostle of the Act Party, David ‘See Me No More In Parliament’. That’s why I must give a huge shout out to Jo Luxton, Andrew Falloon and Amy Adams. Not long after the tragic events of Christchurch, I emailed the afore mentioned MPs along with the Prime Minister’s office. I emailed them as a private citizen and expressed my sentiment that they do whatever they can in their spheres of influence to ensure our gun laws are reviewed and written in a way that eliminates, isolates or reduces the likelihood of the March 15 events happening again. Now here is where you need to kick the cat off the couch and put down your crochet. It was after 10pm when I sent out the emails, and both Jo and Andrew replied personally that night! Seriously, at a time when most

Within days Amy and the Prime Minister’s office had replied. Now I hadn’t actually asked for a reply, but they all did. This is why I am so pleased we don’t have the peacock strutting type behaviour of David Seymour. For once I feel sorry for the affluent, affable residents of Epsom. MP Seymour crowed long and loud that he would slow down the gun law review, quoting democracy as the reason for doing so. He majestically held centre stage on Tuesday, while the media hounds circled and snapped at the sound bites he tossed. All the while the other 119 elected members got on with the job and voted to shift the bill through its first reading and into select committee stage. While making himself look ridiculous is not new to David, he also missed the point of being an elected representative, something Jo and Andrew with
fewer years in the job have easily grasped. There are times when we want the ones we elected to simply make the right decision and not muck around. We elected them to represent us, but that does not always equate to incessant consultation with us. If they have any nous they will know the thoughts of their electorate. Obviously 119 MPs did, and one simply wanted to be on TV. This was one of those occasions when it was obvious as to what politicians needed to do. Democracy does not mean every step taken is first discussed back and forward between Wellington and the voting public. Yes, there are systems to making these decisions, but there is also discretion and the ability to move within that process. People expect our politicians to make good decisions and not waste time in parliament when it is obvious what needs to be done. I truly believe that the actions of David Seymour were simply to grab some media attention. He and his party exist within the margin of error used by statisticians, as they only polled at 0.5
per cent in the last election. This is why I am so pleased we have the astute thinking local politicians we do. Current statistics show that the rate at which Act Party support is declining since 2008 mirrors the rise of our prison numbers, so that by the next election more people will be in prison than support this man and his conservative populist policies. Which ironically should please David, because they campaigned on a zero-tolerance policing policy as well as speeding up the court process. So it’s all right to crack down hard on crims and get them to jail as quickly as possible, but not all right to push through laws designed to have the events of March 15 never repeated. Time to loosen the Gucci belt David and sniff the underwear – I’m sure there is a whiff of hypocrisy coming from there.
On Thursday, April 4, around midday, I was driving from Tinwald to Ashburton. As usual for the highway through Tinwald very few drivers enable side road traffic the opportunity to enter the main road. Near Carters Terrace a car travelling under the viaduct travelled through the stop sign without slowing down.
The vehicle then continued over the bridge and into town. I drive SH1 daily and regularly observe traffic coming out of Racecourse Road and onto SH1 without stopping. If I see this happening on a daily basis how is it that authorities are unaware of it happening? Many of the offenders are driving vehicles with company names
on them. Young drivers get challenged about their driving on occasions, the people I see are so-called responsible people. Stop signs should become a focus for law enforcement attention. You want to reduce accidents and save lives? Take action on these problem areas now. John Lawler

An Otago farmer’s misplaced trust in a stock and station agent has ended with a judge saying the days of doing business on a handshake are over. Justice Gerald Nation of the High Court in Christchurch found largely in favour of Jasper Ross Clark against stock and station firm Rural Livestock. He awarded Clark more than $270,000 plus interest and costs – but far less than the nearly $640,000 the Milton farmer had sought. “At least historically, it was often a source of pride amongst New Zealand farmers and stock agents that all that was needed to secure their dealings was a handshake,” Justice Nation says in his judgment. “The experience of the parties to these proceedings may well suggest that should now be consigned to history.” Farmers should also know “what stock they farm and keep tallies”, he added. The judgment weaves a complicated tale of Clark’s dealings with stock agent John Williams with whom he had a long-standing relationship but who clearly
wasn’t that great with paperwork. His dealings are under scrutiny by the Serious Fraud Office. The total amount awarded relates to a number of different transactions, including Clark’s $210,277.50 purchase of 176 pregnant heifers which Clark never managed to clap eyes on, another series of deals or attempted deals involving 253 heifer calves, and 112 “empty” dairy heifers of which Clark received just 71 or 72. Justice Nation noted that Clark “put a significant degree of trust” in Williams and that even though he acknowledged having problems with Williams providing him with the paperwork for transactions, he “considered Mr Williams was a good agent in terms of setting up deals”. Clark bought the 176 pregnant heifers relating to most of the compensation to be put out to pasture on another farmer’s land until after they calved. The second farmer would keep the calves as payment, but the cows were to be returned to Clark. Williams had leased the cows to two different farmers, one of whom appears not to exist, and when it came time to return the

cows to Clark, they were nowhere to be found. Justice Nation notes that an unusual feature of the case was that Williams, “whose conduct is under challenge, gave evidence for the plaintiffs”. Although the judge accepted some of Williams’ evidence, there were some matters “on which
problematic. “Under cross-examination, Mr Williams said he had arranged the lease of 90 heifers to Mr Bouma and the remainder to a farmer in Canterbury,” the judgment says. “He said that he was under constraints through obligations of confidentiality in relation to his involvement in the investigation of the SFO but that he was able to say the stock leased to a Mr Greers or Giers in Canterbury had ultimately ‘gone north’,” it says. Apparently, some of the cows ended up being sold, but Clark was kept in the dark about this and never received payment. A Rural Livestock general manager suggested it was possible the proceeds were credited “to one of Mr Williams’ own fictitious accounts, although not paid out to him”. Rural had frozen all Williams’ accounts. That general manager acknowledged the firm’s “systems and management inadvertently allowed Mr Williams’ irregularities to occur unnoticed and then failed to detect them for some time”.
A company forced to rehire a woman they sacked for vomiting and allegedly sexually propositioning Sydney Opera House staff is appealing an order to reinstate her position. The woman, a project administrator for an electrical company contracted to install lighting to part of the Opera House, got so drunk at farewell drinks she vomited at the bar. She was also accused of sexually propositioning an Opera House employee and insulting staff at the night out in July last year. She had to be helped to a taxi as her night came to an end and said she’d “never being so drunk in my life”. The company, Ryan Wilks, sacked the manager for breaching their internal “code of conduct” after quizzing the manager on what happened in meetings about alleged “misconduct”. The woman denied the initial allegations that she sexually propositioned an Opera House employee and verbally abused other staff at the farewell drinks. She also contested the amount of wine that she threw up, claiming it was only a “small amount of regurgitated wine”. The woman described the case against her by Ryan Wilks as untruthful and said her claims for reinstatement were to “have her name cleared, in what she described as heinous allegations”. She launched a complaint to the Fair Work Commission against Ryan Wilks and provided “exten-
sive written submissions” and a slew of other materials to support the case for her reinstatement, according to Fair Work documents. She claimed she’d been kept in the dark about the extent of the allegations and had been unable to defend herself fully, saying there was no real reason for her to have been sacked. The woman claimed she had been treated differently and unfairly compared to other staff, who she asserted had both been more drunk than her and been “sexually provocative” at other staff drinks. She also complained that she wasn’t told about who had complained about her drunkenness on the night. In the claim, she made an assertion that the real reason that she was being sacked was that she was a “whistleblower”. These claims were denied by the company. The manager further claimed that Ryan Wilks’ investigative processes, that led to her being sacked, were inadequate. Fair Work Commissioner Ian Cambridge ordered that Ryan Wilks rehire the woman and called her sacking harsh, unjust and unreasonable. But the company said they’re appealing the decision. “The company relies on its code of conduct as to expected standards of behaviour for its employees,” Ryan Wilks told the ABC via a statement. “As the appeal is yet to be determined, the company is not able to make any further comment at this stage”. In the original submissions
Ryan Wilks claimed reinstating the woman was not an option. They claimed the woman’s conduct on the night had caused “serious damage to the relationship” between both parties. While the woman was attending a function out of hours, her employer also argued that it reflected poorly on her workplace. This is because, according to Ryan Wilks, it happened with colleagues and people associated with work, close by her workplace. The leaving do took place at the Opera Bar and then moved on to the Portside Bar downstairs. Cambridge, the commissioner, said employees need to take care, as they could increasingly be judged by management while at work functions outside of work hours. “The employer was understandably concerned that the misconduct of the applicant at the farewell drinks function might have some impact upon the renewal of its contract with its major client, the Sydney Opera House. “Consequently, in this instance, there would seem to be sound basis for the employer to have implemented some form of disciplinary action in respect to the misconduct of the applicant associated with her drunkenness,” he said. He said getting drunk, without aggression or being abusive, a single time at a work event does not add up to misconduct that can lead to dismissal. It was also noted in the case that the woman had an unblemished record before the drunken incident.

■■ In a food processor, blitz together the almonds, sage and panko crumbs to make a crumb. Set aside. ■■ Make a slit to the chunky part of the thighs and butterfly to make the chicken pieces into even thickness. ■■ Mix together the milk and egg. Set aside. ■■ Coat the chicken thighs in seasoned flour, then egg mixture, then almond crumb mixture. ■■ On the BBQ over a medium
heat, cook the chicken with a little drizzle of avocado cooking oil for 4-5 minutes each side until cooked through and golden. ■■ At the same time, fry the bacon until golden and crispy on the BBQ. ■■ Blitz the avocado, lime, apple syrup and vinegar together with a little avocado oil to loosen. Season with salt and pepper. ■■ Coat the cabbage in the avocado dressing. ■■ Grill the pita pockets on the BBQ last minute until warmed through and a little charred. Cut pitas in half. ■■ To assemble, spread some mayo and sriracha inside the half pita, add the avocado slaw, gherkins, chicken and bacon. Serve immediately. Devour! Mid Canterbury United will today embark on its first season in the Mainland Football division one competition in the strongest position they’ve ever been in. That’s according to the side’s coach and goalkeeper Marty Fitzgerald, and he should know. He’s been around the traps for a while now and is excited by the depth of this year’s squad, with a number of new young faces set to combine with the more experienced players to make what they hope will be a formidable team. Mid Canterbury United are stepping up to division one this year, after an unbeaten season in division two last year resulted in promotion to the next step up – and it will be a step up, Fitzgerald is sure of that. So he said it’s important the players don’t get ahead of themselves. For him, it’s all about taking it one game at a time. “We’ll take the attitude that last season is last season. “A couple of guys keep rabbiting on about how we were undefeated and want to carry on that run, but my thinking is it’s a new season and a new looking team, and our focus has got to be game by game,” Fitzgerald said. Mid Canterbury United begin their 2019 season at home today at 2.30pm against Halswell United, a club they played pre-season and drew 1-all, and Fitzgerald described the feeling in the camp as “nervously confident”. “My squad, on paper, I think we are going to be a force to be reckoned with and when we are on song we are going to rip teams apart,” Fitzgerald said. The side has welcomed Jamie Smitheram in the centre mids this year, Matt Boote in centre defence, Tom Dudley at right wing and Nick Campbell in the number 10 striking role. The young new additions mean Mid Canterbury United will be running a squad of 18 this season instead of 16, and there will

be competition for starting spots every week. “Some of the older guys are going to have to earn their spots with the young guys eyeing up a starting role,” Fitzgerald said. Many of the side’s returning players will take to the field in different positions than last year, including Stanly Pokipoki who has moved from defence to left wing and Sam Hall who will play at left back instead of right back. The side will be co-captained by Ed Kettle and Luke Martin, who is set to again be a force to be reckoned with up front. Fitzgerald said he’s asked his
side to play a passing style of football this year, which is set to be faster and more accurate than the style they played last year. So far it’s looking good and Mid Canterbury United are hopeful it will work well in a division that they know is going to be a step up from what they’re used to. Mid Canterbury United aren’t the only local team stepping it up a notch this season. Up the road in Methven, the Methven FC Seniors also finished on top and earned themselves promotion last season. They’re making the step up from Mainland Football’s divi-
sion four competition, to division three, and today they are also at home for game one. They’ll play Universities AFC Sisters at the Methven Domain at 2.30pm. The feeling in the Methven camp is good, too, with the team having taken out their own pre-season tournament late last month – the inaugural Methven SuperValue Cup. Both Mid Canterbury United and Methven United have another team in the Mainland Football senior men’s competitions this season, with both having teams in division six.
Methven FC’s division six team is away to Banks Peninsula in Akaroa today, while Mid Canterbury United’s division six team is also on the road. They are playing the FC Twenty 11 Memes at Avonhead Park in Christchurch. Mid Canterbury United also has a team in the senior women’s division one competition played on Sundays – the Mid Canterbury United Phat Ducks – and they’re also away for round one tomorrow. They’ll play the Western AFC Princesses at Elmwood Park in Christchurch.

Netball gets under way Premier netball teams from around Canterbury will make their way to Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre tomorrow for the first day of the 2019 inter-centre netball competition. Six Mid Canterbury teams will be among those taking part. Today, Guardian sports reporter Erin Tasker takes a look at who those teams are and what the inter-centre competition has in store for them.
Celtic Celtic finished the 2018 season with two teams in Mid Canterbury Netball’s top grade – premier one – for the first time. They’re heading into the inter-centre competition with just the one squad though, with Celtic A and Celtic B coming together for the pre-season tournament, and for them it’s all about challenging themselves. Celtic A coach Angela Leadley will lead the team through the inter-centre competition and she said it’s a chance to blow out the cobwebs and tidy up any bad habits, but also an opportunity to play unknown teams. “It’s a great opportunity to play different teams and styles, and challenge yourself,” Leadley said. Celtic’s sides have lost some key players from their 2018 line-ups, but Leadley said they’ve also welcomed some new blood and they are working together well as a group. Celtic will play Kia Toa and Old Boys A tomorrow, and Marist Albion and Hampstead A next Sunday. Celtic’s squad for day one of the inter-centre tournament is Anna Holland, Julia McLeod, Shannon Stockdale, Sala Bueta, Gemma Boon, Barine Ross, Elliotte Strange, Catherine Kuyf, Livvie Kennedy, Rebecca Cornish and Natalie Allen.
Methven A Last year’s beaten finalists in Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier grade Methven A would dearly love to go one better this season. And according to coach Maree Firth, they’ve got the team that could do it. They’ve lost a couple of key players, but have also picked up a few new players. “Second’s not where we want to be, so we are looking forward to a really strong season,” Firth said. Firth said the feeling in the camp is good heading into the inter-centre competition. “We don’t know a lot about the other teams that we will be playing, so the first round will give us a good idea.” Methven has drawn Selwyn’s Broadfield A in their first game tomorrow, and Timaru’s Craighead A tomorrow afternoon, and on day two next Sunday they’ll play Timaru’s Old Boys A and Rolleston. “The focus really for this weekend is just getting combinations going,” Firth said. “This year I think we have strength throughout the court, so it’s just getting those combinations together.” The main players missing this season, from the squad that took Methven to the final in 2018, are shooter Lana Ngametua, defender Sally Carr and mid-courter Sophie Lilley. Methven’s squad is Leanne Clemens, Hayley Duthie, Hannah McDougall, Amelia McKnight, Anita Watson, Sarah Stoddart, Lizzy Bell, Anna Poole, Kelsey Hart and Kate Brady.

Hampstead A
Only three players who were part of Hampstead A’s 2018 campaign have returned for another shot in 2019. But coach Janene McDowell is more than happy with her lot – she’s got a good mix of players with strengths across the court, and she said the inter-centre competition will provide their first real tests. “We’re just taking this as what it is – it’s pre-season so we won’t be looking at the scoreline or anything silly like that, and we will be distributing the work load around everyone,” McDowell said. After being unable to field a B team last year, Hampstead has both an A and a B team set to take to the court this season, and McDowell said that’s great for the club. A couple of the players from the B team are likely to make appearances during the inter-centre competition. This year’s Hampstead A squad is Renae Taylor, Emma Rosevear, Nicole Hands, Sophie Currie, Georgia Burrowes, Maddy Walker, Meg Ashworth, Anna Proudman and Olivia Proudman.
Ashburton College A In 2018, Ashburton College were a young and relatively inexperienced side. This year, it’s a different story.
College A coach Kaye Kennedy said her side has lost just three players from their 2018 squad – two have finished school and one has dropped back to the Bs – and they have been replaced by Faith Scott, Jasmin Strawbridge and Taylah Burrowes. “We are looking at being able to consolidate this year with some exciting new players in there to add to the crew,” Kennedy said. “I’ve been really impressed with the work that they have done in the off season, they look really fit and strong. “Most of the girls have been involved with the Mid Canterbury player development programme, so that’s really great, they have had a bit of a head-start with that.” College A will play Hampstead A and Timaru’s Harlequins A in the inter-centre competition tomorrow, and Craighead A and Rangiora High School A next weekend. Playing the two school sides will give College A a gauge of where they’re at heading into a season where they have to qualify for the Canterbury secondary schools’ SuperNet competition, having finished sixth in the top grade last year. That was a bottom three finish and the bottom three teams from the top grade and the top three teams from the reserve grade will play off on May 5, 8 and 11 for the right to play in that top grade in 2019.

United A It’s not hard to guess what United A’s goal for this season is. They were relegated from Mid Canterbury’s premier one competition to premier two last season, which is where they’ll start this season. So their aim is to get back to premier one. They’ll play in the premier two section of the inter-centre competition, too, starting against Tech B tomorrow followed by fellow Ashburton side Celtic – an extra game to make up for the bye that United has – and next weekend they’ll play Tech B and Marist Albion. Coach Claire Tappin said her 2019 squad featured a mix of experience with youthful energy, with five players returning from last year and three newcomers joining. Like United A, Southern A was also a premier one side when the Mid Canterbury Netball season got under way last season and they’re determined to get back to the top. Southern A were automatically relegated at the end of round one, with Mt Somers – a team that will not feature in the inter-centre competition – the team taking their place in premier one. Hampstead well overdue By Erin Tasker

Hampstead’s narrow one point loss to Darfield in round one of rugby’s Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Cup competition last weekend was as good as a win in their books. It showed them that after years of finishing at the bottom end of the table, this season it could be very different. So when round two of the combined competition kicks off at grounds around Canterbury this afternoon, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a team hungrier for the win than Hampstead. Today they take on Burnham-Dunsandel-Irwell (BDI) at Dunsandel and they’ll board the bus for the short trip up SH1 feeling confident. It’s a feeling that’s been in short supply at Hampstead in the past. They’ve won the odd combined competition game in recent seasons, but not enough to make them anywhere near contenders, and this year marks 10 years since they last won a game in the Mid Canterbury Rugby Watters Cup competition. But they’ve been working hard to change things both on and off the field, and the Shaun Bovey and Craig Dwyer-coached side is now a team to watch. The question now though, is can Hampstead remember how to finish off a game? They came so close on Saturday, and were even closer against Rakaia and Methven in the Watters Cup last season, but were denied in both by tries in the final minute. Bovey said today’s game against BDI will be physical, and while his players took a lot of heart from the fact that they led Darfield for long periods in round one, they won’t be getting ahead of themselves. “Just because we competed against Darfield, it doesn’t mean the job is done, but it is a building block,” Bovey said. “We don’t want to get carried away, that’s when you lose games that you had in the book to win.”

Just what BDI will offer today is unknown – they’re a team that can change a lot from year to year – but they put up a right fight against Southern last week. Southern won that match – the only win by a Mid Canterbury team in the first round. Southern coach Andrew Carr isn’t getting too excited about that either because he knows it’s just the first step, but he did say he was pleasantly surprised by what his team produced on the field in game one. He’s hoping they’ll do more of the same today when they head
to Ashley for their next pool A clash, where they will be reading nothing into Ashley’s round one 65-0 loss at the hands of defending champions Waihora. Also taking on a team that failed to post a score in round one, is Ashburton Celtic. They’re away to an Ohoka side which was last week beaten 41-0 by Springston, but Celtic also know they’ve got a lot of work to do too, after going down 51-24 to Prebbleton in round one. It may be early season, but Celtic is already struggling with depth due to both injuries and player
departures from last season. The match between Celtic and Ohoka is one of the weekly crossover match between Celtic’s pool C, and pool B – a pool which features Mid Canterbury’s other two teams. One of those – Methven – also has a big trip north to make today. They’re away to Glenmark-Cheviot today, a week after just falling short of a come-from-behind victory over Southbridge. That leaves fellow pool B team Rakaia as the only local side to have home ground advantage today.
Rakaia finished runners-up to Waihora in 2018, but showed they still have some work to do in their first round loss to Glenmark-Cheviot, and they’ll be hoping for an improved performance when they take on Rolleston at the Rakaia Domain. Kick off is 2.45pm. Meanwhile, Ashburton’s first senior women’s team – playing out of the Celtic club – will make their official competition debut today. The Celtic women are away to Lincoln University in round one of the 2019 Metro Open Grade women’s competition.
Dagg blows the whistle on unfulfilled career Israel Dagg played 89 of his 112 Super Rugby games for the Crusaders.
Former All Blacks fullback Israel Dagg has called time on an ongoing battle with injury and announced his retirement from all rugby. One of the most eye-catching players of his generation, Dagg spent the latter part of his career fighting a knee problem that hasn’t allowed him to play for the Crusaders, let alone add to his 66 test caps. While disappointed to step away, Dagg was grateful his All Blacks career fell during a period of enormous success, from 2010-17. Blessed with electric pace and elusive running, Dagg burst onto the international stage with a series of spectacular tries. His form was so compelling, he replaced centurion Mils Muliaina as the starting fullback midway through the victorious 2011 World Cup campaign in New Zealand.
When injuries slowed him, Dagg adapted his game, honing his aerial skills to an elite level and developing one of the game’s longest punts. New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew said Dagg’s running will be the abiding memory for most fans. “He leaves us as one of the greats of our game and the second most capped All Blacks fullback of all time,” Tew said. “He was an excitement machine on the rugby field and fans knew that when he got the ball in his hands that anything could happen.” Crusaders coach Scott Robertson said Dagg’s contribution had continued off the field in recent seasons, helping mentor some of the exciting backline talent that had kept the Super Rugby champions ahead of their rivals. - NZME

Litmus test for Brumbies Brumbies coach Dan McKellar is relaxed about throwing a green second-row pairing into Super Rugby’s version of the deep end. History, form and the emotion factor will all weigh heavily against the men from Canberra when they try to end a 10-year winless drought against the Crusaders tonight. It’s nearly twice as long since they’ve beaten the nine-time champions in Christchurch. Yet McKellar has taken a selection punt by omitting test tight forwards Scott Sio, Folau Fainga’a and Rory Arnold under the Wallabies rest protocol. He has also demoted experienced lock Sam Carter to the bench following their 3614 loss to the Queensland Reds two weeks ago. Into the middle of the scrum comes the Brumbies’ version of the odd couple. Well-travelled Scotsman Murray Douglas is joined by 21-year-old north Queenslander Darcy Swain, who last week signed a three-season contract extension. Both will make their maiden Brumbies start and are determined to provide grunt against an All Blacks-laden Crusaders pack which is rarely bettered. The hosts flexed their muscles last week in an emphatic 32-8 derby win over the Hurricanes and plenty is expected from them in their first match in Christchurch since the March 15 mosque terror attacks. McKellar had no qualms testing the met-
tle of Douglas and Swain in such an environment and expects they will respond to the tense introspection the Brumbies have undergone since their meek loss to the Reds. “It’s a great opportunity for players. It’s a special occasion, the Crusaders in Christchurch and there’s no bigger task in Super Rugby,” he said. “You can’t pick and choose your moments. It’s professional rugby and you have to turn up every week. “If you’re going to lack physical intent, then you’re going to get beaten.” McKellar’s bench has an even leaner look, with hooker Connal McInerney and flanker Jahrome Brown poised for rare minutes. Prop Vunipola Fifita is in line for a Super Rugby debut. Red Bull Holden Racing Team star Jamie Whincup set a new practice lap record of 50.5084 seconds at Symmons Plains to finish ahead of team-mate Shane van Gisbergen. Centre of gravity changes were made on the Commodore and the Ford Mustang following testing after the Melbourne Grand Prix event. The Mustang has dominated the season so far, winning all six races. Holden however locked out the top five spaces in Tasmania, with David Reynolds, Mark Winterbottom and James Courtney coming behind the Red Bull pair. I
’m a Crusaders fan, so I’ll dearly miss the horses. They were there at the start. After the Canterbury Crusaders first played at Lancaster Park in 1996, and were thrashed 48-19 by the Auckland Blues, I was one of many local commentators who suggested the most exciting time for the Christchurch crowd was when the horsemen dressed as knights thundered around the ground before the kick-off. I’ll miss the Crusaders’ name if it’s changed. There are a horde of thrilling onfield memories, from the stunning upset of the 1998 title win over the Blues, to the sheer joy the current side brings to their sport. Along with, I would imagine, most New Zealanders, I’m not a student of medieval history, and in ‘96 any vague ideas I had about the Crusades were based on the Monty Python movie. That sounds flippant now, but back then it was my innocent, albeit hugely ill informed, truth. But as a country we’re not innocent anymore. The horror from the country’s darkest day is at the centre of the sad change, felt nowhere more keenly than in Christchurch. On the periphery is the name of a rugby team, a team that in Christchurch has unified and uplifted. From the days of Wayne Smith, Robbie Deans, and Todd Blackadder, the Crusaders have been a byword for decency and inclusiveness. Having spent 50 years as a paid observer of rugby teams, no group has set better standards than the Crusaders, or had a more generous attitude to people outside the team. But now we know that the Crusaders’ name itself derives from groups as brutal and vicious as any other in medieval times, themselves a dark, cruel era in history. We can’t undo that knowledge now. While I can understand the stance of
those who feel something that happened 1000 years ago shouldn’t have any influence on our thinking now, I’d respectively suggest that tens of millions of people all over the world still follow the teachings of a man who was crucified more than 2000 years ago. I don’t hear people suggesting that Christians are idiots to follow beliefs so old. A name change in a city like Christchurch, where so many have an emotional connection to the Crusaders, is already stirring powerful emotions. An online petition opposing any name change has quickly gathered almost 20,000 supporters. In 1998 when the name of Lancaster Park was changed to Jade Stadium, after a sponsorship deal with a local computer company, there were, in those largely pre-internet days, a barrage of outraged letters to local editors. The Crusaders stir more visceral feelings. What’s important now, as the discussion swirls, is that some things are not only made clear, but are drilled home. There’s been no government request for a name change, and, more importantly, Colin Mansbridge, CEO Crusaders CEO, says the Muslim community has played no part in discussions, much less requested a change. For the “PC gone mad” group it’s vital they know this is a determination not being driven from Muslim agitation, but by rugby officials who are, as Mansbridge has said, “committed to doing the right thing”. Sensitivity and rugby management have rarely been automatically associated, but Mansbridge and New Zealand Rugby’s CEO Steve Tew were fair and thoughtful when they suggested the imagery of knights on horseback was no longer tenable. In all honesty, if the whole branding of the team, from the pre-match entertainment, the faux fortress at the home ground, the crest on the jersey, the song Conquest Of Paradise and the sword sunk in the ground, are all dropped, as it appears they will be, it’s hard to grasp how the name can’t go the same way as the symbolism.

Defending champs await Barbarians By Erin Tasker

The Ashburton Barbarians face a trip to Burnham to play the defending champions in an earlier than expected start to the Canterbury Rugby League division one competition today. They’re set to take on the Burnham Chevaliers at Coronation Park this afternoon and although they only found out on Monday that their season would be starting this weekend, they’re ready. In fact, Barbarians coach Steve Gamble said in all of his years involved with the club, he’s never seen them as ready for a season as they are at the moment. “It’s possibly the fittest that I have seen them for the start of a season anyway,” Gamble said. “Some of the boys are probably three times fitter now than they were at the end of last season.” Much of that goes down to the hard work of the side’s trainer, Len Wilson, and it’s actually given Gamble a good headache this season. “He’s got more fit forwards capable of playing for long stretches, than he can handle. But that’s a good problem to have. The side has had two good pre-season hit-outs and had been thinking they still had a week or two before their season started. At the start of the week they still hadn’t seen a draw for the season
and while an email on Monday advised them they’d be playing the Chevaliers in round one today, they’re yet to see a draw any further ahead than that. Gamble said starting the competition today is good for the Barbarians. With no more pre-season fixtures planned, they’d have just been spending their remaining Saturdays training anyway, so they are looking forward to getting into it. They know Burnham will be tough – they always are – but Gamble is happy with where his side is at and knows that if they can survive the initial Chevaliers onslaught, they could start the 2019 season with an upset victory. “If we can weather the storm in the early stages of the game we should be able to open up our backs and have a look in there,” Gamble said. But it’s in the forwards where Gamble really sees the Barbarians’ strength being this season. They’re big, they’re fit, and they’re keen. “I think the key for us is going to be our forward fitness and the fact that this year we have stripped things back and gone back to basic rugby league and are working on our one per centers every time we go out there,” Gamble said. Cronk plays down injury concerns Sydney Roosters veteran Cooper Cronk has played down injury concerns, insisting he came from the field as a precaution during his side’s 36-4 thumping of Brisbane. After spending the last fortnight on the sidelines because of a hamstring complaint, Cronk copped a series of stiff hits before being substituted midway through the second half at the SCG on Thursday night. Broncos forward Tevita Pangai Junior will come under the scrutiny of the match review committee after whacking the champion playmaker after he had passed the ball. The tackle was put on report and described as a “dog shot” by Immortal Andrew Johns. Cronk came from the field after seemingly copping friendly fire from Poasa Faamausili while tackling Corey Oates. However, Cronk insisted with his side up 22-0 at the time – it was job done and he came off for the final 28 minutes to give himself a rest. “No injury. I’ve been out with a tight hamstring for the last two weeks,” Cronk said. “The idea leading into the game was to get some real good quality minutes in. “Our first half was pretty good, we played real high-quality footy. “In terms of getting our bench some minutes, it was just precau-
tionary to come off.” Cronk stayed on the ground for several moments after being hit from behind by Pangai Junior but said he had come to expect that sort of treatment. “It’s part of the job description, it’s part of your role as a ball player, you’ve got to go into the line and create some space for your outside players,” Cronk said. “The officials will take care of all that stuff. “As long as I keep on getting up and standing, I’ll keep doing my job. “I’d prefer not to (get hit from behind) but sometimes that’s a part of football. “Sometimes they do it so halves don’t go into the line and create space. “I’ll keep doing it for my team as long as guys can take advantage of it.” Johns has long been vocal about the need to offer greater protection for playmakers and Cronk said there was no place in the game for cheap shots. “If it’s late, high, aggressive contact, wipe it out of the game completely,” Cronk said. “I’m not talking about that incident, I’m talking generically. “There was a question mark, it could have been 10 in the bin but I trust the officials.” - AAP Cooper Cronk’s exit from the field on Thursday was precautionary.

Andertons on a mission The Brian and Shane Anderton-trained Gallant Boy will head into the Listed Christchurch Casino Easter Cup (1600m) in a freshened state and his connections believe he is ready to make it back-to-back stakes victories today. The eight-year-old son of Gallant Guru was victorious laststart in the Gr.3 White Robe Lodge Weight For Age (1600m) at Wingatui in February and his trainers are eyeing a tilt at the Gr.3 Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup (2000m) at Riccarton next week if everything goes to plan today. “It was a great run (last start),” Brian Anderton said. “He got everything in his favour and it was a good ride. The horse pulled out all the stops to win. “He’s won ten races now, so he is a real honest type of horse. “He’s well, he has freshened up nicely and we intend to run him again at Christchurch the following week in the mile and a quarter (Gr.3 Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup, 2000m). Gallant Boy may be rising nine,

but Anderton said his gelding is improving with time and is in the form of his life. “The funny thing about him, when you get a horse who is an eight-year-old people start thinking they are getting buggered, but he’s probably the best we have ever had him,” he said.
“He’s matured now and thickened up and has improved with age.” Gallant Boy hasn’t raced since early February, but Anderton is happy with his charge, who will jump from barrier two under jockey Terry Moseley with 58.5kg on his back in the open handicap.
Big test for Kiwi duo Leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller will line-up two New Zealand-bred fillies in the Gr.3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) at Randwick today and believes both runners will be competitive in the race. Vale Trevor McKee Former thoroughbred trainer Trevor McKee (ONZM) has passed away at the age of 81, triggering an outpouring of tributes for the muchloved member of the New Zealand racing fraternity. McKee shot to prominence as the co-trainer of champion mare Sunline, whom he prepared in partnership with his son Stephen and their mare made the pair a household name. Sunline was retired from racing in 2002 after winning 32 of her 48 starts and $11.3 million in prizemoney, including two Gr.1 Cox Plates (2040m). - NZME

But we rode him too handy, he seems better when ridden back a bit.” The Andertons will be hoping to record further black-type success at Riccarton when Larippa lines up in the Listed NZB Airfreight Stakes (1600m). The three-year-old daughter of Rip Van Winkle is on a path towards next week’s Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Warstep Stakes, but Anderton said she will have to acquit herself well to warrant a start in that race. “She’s going to be tested, but our ambition has always been the Warstep Stakes over a mile and a quarter. We have just got to have a run and see how we shape up,” he said. “She’s got to measure up. She’s won her maiden, but as you go up it gets harder. If she runs on well in that field we would be going on to have a go at the Warstep Stakes.” - NZME
