Debbie deluge to hit BY SUSAN SANDYS
SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mid Canterbury’s big wet keeps getting wetter. Today 30 to 40 millimetres of rain is likely to fall in the district, as the leftover tropical air associated with Cyclone Debbie moves across the district. Additionally the district was forecast to get up to 15mm yesterday up until midnight in an
easterly to south-east weather pattern. The rain comes after a wet March and wet start to April, frustrating farmers who are still harvesting. MetService meteorologist Peter Little said an area of low pressure would cross central New Zealand and turn winds around to the south-west today. This change could see some
early morning snow down to about 900m in The Canterbury High Country. The forecast is for periods of rain with heavy falls possible, with strong south-westerlies, rising to a gale in the afternoon. “A good day for the coat and gummies,” Little said. Meteorologists have not considered the weather is severe enough for the issuing of any
weather warnings and Little said this was unlikely to change. The Ashburton District Council will have contractors at the ready in case of surface flooding. However, assets manager Andrew Guthrie said the timing of the heavy rain could be in the council’s favour, because to date there has been little leaf fall, which can cause blocking of stormwater drains.
Nevertheless New Zealand Four Wheel Drive Association Southern Zone public relations officer John McDonald is reminding motorists who come upon flooding across roads, streams or rivers at any time – either within or outside of the district – not to enter if they cannot see the bottom.
