Motorsport enthusiasts turned out in their droves at the annual Mountain Thunder motorcycle street race over the weekend.

Thousands of people packed into Methven on Saturday and lined the hay bale barricades to catch a glimpse of the riders.

The annual event, organised by the Methven Lions Club, involved riders making their way around a 1km circuit in Methven’s town centre.

Event co-ordinator for Methven Lions, Sue van den Heuvel, said the day was a success, and the weather too, played its part.

“I was a bit worried about those clouds, we had a few spits in the morning and I thought yikes, then the sun came out and it was hot in the end,” she said.

“It was a beautiful day, great atmosphere.”

People came from all over New Zealand to watch the 150 riders compete, up 30 from last year, reaching speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour around the town centre.

Spectator numbers could not yet be confirmed but Ms van den Heuvel said they were likely to be in the thousands, and numbers were most definitely up

on last year’s attendance.

One of the highlights of the event, she said, was 38-year-old Josh Coppins, a professional motocross racer and former world number two champion, who was one of the competitors on Saturday.

He was definitely a spectacle to watch in the motards, and there was some tight racing which was really good to see, she said.

As with any high speed event there is risk involved but this year, there were no serious injuries.

All in all it was a great day for Methven, Ms van den Heuvel said.

Williams takes eighth Miami crown World number one Serena Williams joined an elite club at the weekend, winning her eighth Miami WTA title with a comprehensive 6-2 6-0 win over Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro.

The 33-year-old US superstar, who won her 19th Grand Slam title in Australia this year, lifted the trophy in the elite premier level tournament for the third straight year. She also won three straight Miami titles from 2002-04 and back-to-back titles in 2007-08. Williams had already surpassed Steffi Graf for most Miami triumphs with her win last year. At the weekend she joined Graf, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert as the only Open Era players to win the same event at least eight times.

Graf won nine titles in Berlin, Evert won eight in Hilton Head, and Navratilova achieved the feat in seven tournaments, including her nine Wimbledon titles.

Celebrating all things Hobbit Five thousand people have convened in the German city of Bonn to celebrate all things Hobbit, in an event inspired by the high-fantasy work of English writer JRR Tolkien. The event, dubbed Hobbitcon 3, sees fans dressing up as the various characters from Lord of the Rings, which was adapted as a series of epic films by director Peter Jackson. The three-day event includes autograph sessions with actors from the films, workshops, a concert and a costume competition. It finishes today.

Cowell blasts X Factor judges X Factor creator Simon Cowell has spoken about the scandal that enveloped the New Zealand version of the show. Judges Natalia Kills and Willy Moon were kicked off the show last month after slinging insults at contestant Joe Irvine. They were replaced by Australian singer Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Kiwi drummer Shelton Woolright. “It was hateful. She (Natalia) sounded mad. It didn’t even make sense,” Cowell told the Daily Mail’s Weekend magazine. He said the judges didn’t apologise early enough and were quite defensive. Kills said it was “disgusting” how Irvine had copied her husband Moon and he went on to compare Irvine to the fictional Psycho murderer Norman Bates.

At the time Mediaworks chief executive Mark Weldon said both Kills and Moon made comments that were completely unacceptable. “While the judges on X Factor are expected to provide critiques of performances, we will not tolerate such destructive tirades from any of the judges,” Mr Weldon said.

More than 20 years after his death, the final album is coming out from prolific rocker Frank Zappa. Zappa’s estate announced pre-order sales for Dance Me This, saying it was the 100th and last album from the Los Angeles-based experimental musician who died in 1993 from prostate cancer. His official website announced the album’s release on April Fool’s Day - prompting speculation it was a spoof - but the estate confirmed that the album was on sale through direct orders and would be shipped in June.

Zappa had mentioned the album before his death, saying that it would feature the synclavier - a synthesiser and programming system developed in the 1970s - and, true to the work’s name, would consist of dance music.

Zappa’s estate has been releasing albums from him and his band, The Mothers of Invention, almost annually since his death. Zappa was often described as a hard rocker but his music was free-flowing with improvisation techniques from jazz and inspiration from contemporary classical composers.

Zappa was popular in the California counter culture but had an uneasy relationship with it.

There’s been a decent shake in Christchurch.

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake was recorded

by GeoNet at 4.08pm yesterday but residents tweeted it felt bigger than that.

The quake was 11km deep and was located 10km southeast of Christchurch, which is still rebuilding after being devastated by an earthquake four years ago. Within half an hour of the quake more than 1000 people had lodged felt reports with GeoNet. “Big quake just hit Chc. Hope all ok,” Labour MP Ruth Dyson tweeted immediately after the quake. She followed up after the magnitude was confirmed with “Felt bigger. Glad it wasnt!”. Other tweets included: “Was cleaning the car when that wee quake hit hard and fast. The car kept moving for a while. Saved me some elbow grease as I swore away.” “Huh. First time I’ve thought about a door frame in a while” was another tweet.

Plans to revive town party

Ashburton man Bob Gooseman wants to stem the flow of people out of Ashburton on new year’s eve by bringing back a year ender community celebration.

He’s talked to others, knows there’s support for such an event and now he’s determined to see Ashburton usher out 2015 in style.

“I went down to Timaru last

new year’s eve and they had a great show; most of Ashburton was down there,” he said.

That started him thinking about the Ashburton new year events of the past and whether these could be revived.

“I know we can do something like this in Ashburton.

“We’ve got plenty of venues and we’ve certainly got the talent.”

If an Ashburton new year’s eve party is held this year, Mr Gooseman said he’d like to see

it in a different format and a different location to the street parties that were successfully staged for several years.

“We want to see this done with some different ideas.

“You can have ideas that have been used before, we’re looking for something different and for some enthusiastic people to get behind this, people who’ll look at what you can do not say you can’t do it.”

He’s working with a group of people on a format and a

possible programme and when they’ve pulled their ideas together, Mr Gooseman said how it developed from there would depend on community input and support for the concept and on the enthusiasm the idea generated.

Ashburton’s first street party was held to celebrate the new century. It was staged by the Ashburton District Council and attracted thousands of revellers.

The street parties continued

for several years, until the council moved out of its organising role and the event was canned after the 2005 event.

Attempts were made to revive the party in 2007 and 2008 but it failed to generate the crowds of previous years.

The earlier event’s popularity indicated people definitely wanted home-grown entertainment on new year’s eve and the crowds that travelled to Timaru proved that a good event would attract strong support.

Scarecrows pop up around Methven

Stars of the Methven Scarecrow Trail have already attracted eager visitors, after only being open for one weekend.

The trail opened on Easter Saturday, the same day as Methven’s Mountain Thunder Street Race was held, but that did not deter people from grabbing a map and taking to the streets of Methven in search of scarecrows.

This is the third year Karyn Robertson and her mum Gillian Heald have organised the event, the proceeds of which go to Methven Preschool.

This year’s theme was animated characters from film and television, and more than 30 residents and business owners throughout Methven constructed scarecrows that are now scattered throughout the town.

“There are some wicked ones,

we went around the other day photographing them and there were some really cool ones,” Mrs Robertson said.

This year the majority of the scarecrows are located in Methven’s township, rather than on the outskirts.

“You could bike the whole thing, or you can walk it or you can scooter it,” Mrs Roberston said.

Yesterday, maps could be purchased from the gate at Mountain Thunder but the number of maps sold is still being collated.

“We definitely know that some people made the effort and did it, but not sure as to exactly how many yet,” Mrs Robertson said.

Maps and forms for the trail are available at the Methven iSITE and it costs $8 to enter, with prizes for the most correct answers and the best scarecrow.

The trail will remain open until April 18.

In brief Police notebook Incidents reported by police yesterday: - Police attended a single vehicle crash on Hinds-Arundel Road in Carew on Friday night. The vehicle allegedly went through a road sign and hit a large mound of dirt.

There were no injuries, and the car received moderate damage.

- Police attended to a driving matter on West Street at about 3am yesterday morning. The vehicle was impounded and the driver will be appearing in court.

Ashburton College jubilee mural finds a home A mural commemorating Ashburton College’s 50th birthday has finally found a home.

Principal Grant McMillan and mural designer Nicky Lewis showed off the finished

jubilee mural in its new home in the college administration block.

The artwork shows the college’s predecessor schools, Ashburton High School and

Hakatere Technical College, represented by the north and south branches of the Ashburton River.

The two branches then join to meet the sea, which repre-

sents Ashburton College.

The mural was designed entirely on a computer, and features the signatures of thousands of past and present staff and students.

Theatre company wins big in grants

Ashburton’s Big Little Theatre Group was one of the big winners in the recent hand over of grants from the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury.

More than $28,000 has been given to seven groups, with $3000 given to the theatre group to help it stage its 2015 production, Bugsy Malone.

The biggest winner was the Ben Ohau Golf Club in Twizel, $6530 towards its course enhancement project.

Other winners were the Geraldine Community Resource Centre, $5,000 towards operational costs; the Otipua Wetlands Trust, Timaru, $4,950 towards the maintenance of vegetation along the wetland walkway; the Pleasant Point Cricket Club, $3,571 towards the cost of a technical report for a new grass wicket, and the South Canterbury Pony Club, $400 to offset some of the cost of first aid attendance at one-day events.

EVolocity Ltd, a charitable trust which runs an inter-school competition involving the construction of prototype electrical vehicles was given $5000 to allow it to extend the scope of this competition to more secondary schools in mid and south Canterbury The community trust uses the returns from investments to fund its philanthropy.

A man’s body was found in the grounds of an Auckland school yesterday. The circumstances of his death were still unclear, police said.

An investigation is under way after the body was found at St Mary’s School in Avondale. It was not yet known how the man died, police said, and police were “currently investigating the circumstances” surrounding his death.

Fatal road crash The first fatal crash of the Easter road toll has been reported in Canterbury. The two vehicle crash is reported to have occurred shortly before 2.15pm yesterday.

One person has been confirmed as deceased at the scene and another was taken to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter in a serious condition. The death has been referred to the coroner.

Gunshot wound Two men who drove a man with a gunshot wound to the head to Christchurch Hospital overnight Saturday are being sought by police. The injured man, 40, had known gang connections, Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Stewart said. He was driven to hospital by two men in a green/ blue Subaru station wagon around 1.45am. The car was found by police yesterday at a residential address in the Addington suburb of Christchurch. “The car has been seized and will undergo forensic examination,” Mr Stewart said.

“Inquiries into the identities of the two men who took the 40-yearold man to hospital are ongoing.”

The man was in a stable condition in hospital yesterday, with his family by his side, Mr Stewart said.

He remained unconscious. Mr Stewart appealed for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with any information is asked to contact police.

Muliaina denies allegations Former All Black Mils Muliaina has “totally denied” sexual assault allegations that have been made against him.

Muliaina was arrested on Saturday in the United Kingdom after an alleged sexual assault in March.

Muliaina, who now plays for the club Connacht in Ireland, was arrested after his team’s 14-7 defeat to Gloucester.

He was led away from the ground and put in a police van minutes after the match.

Speaking to NZME. News Service yesterday, Inspector Andy Walbeoff of the South Wales police said a 34-year-old man from the Galway area in the Irish Republic was arrested on suspicion of committing a sexual assault.

“He has been released on bail pending further investigations.”

No charges were laid, and it was expected he would remain on bail for “a number of weeks”, Mr Walbeoff said.

He said police would review CCTV footage and speak to

witnesses as part of their investigation into the matter.

Mr Walbeoff was also able to confirm that the alleged victim was a 19-year-old female, who was local to the Cardiff area.

He was unable to confirm where the alleged assault took place, as it could “compromise further witnesses”.

Muliaina’s lawyer Matthew de Maid said that his client “totally denied” allegations made against him. “Mr Muliaina has been spoken to by police about an allegation that has been made,” Mr de Maid said.

“He’s totally denied the allegation that has been made, he’s not been charged with any offence and has in fact been released whilst police carry out further investigation.”

Speaking to Radio New Zealand, Muliaina’s manager Simon Porter said Muliaina was “pretty upset” and “shocked” by the allegations.

Muliaina was with teammates until 3am at an ex-pat bar in the Welsh capital of Cardiff on the night he is alleged

to have sexually assaulted the young woman.

The former All Black great and team-mates from his Irish club team Connacht then left Kiwis bar for a nearby nightclub.

“They were drinking quite a bit,” a worker from Kiwis said.

“They were in a really good mood, they were quite chirpy.

As far as we were concerned they were delightful people to have in - really friendly, really approachable. A few of them were quite oiled up.”

Connacht manager Tim Allnutt confirmed the team had all been drinking at the venue.

The bar worker said the Connacht contingent remained at Kiwis until its 3am closing.

Players then moved on to the Karma nightclub, which stays open until 6am.

He saw Muliaina and coach Pat Lam talking in the middle of a road while the remainder of the group went ahead.

What happened over the next few hours is now the focus of a police investigation. - NZME

Front-line hospital staff have been caught falling asleep during surgery, turning up to work drunk and even assaulting patients.

Other cases include a staff member who formed an inappropriate relationship with a chronically ill patient, another who sneaked a puff of laughing gas at work, and several who stole drugs.

The roll of shame, revealed in Official Information Act documents obtained by the Herald on Sunday, shows more than 350 staff across the country’s 20 district health boards have faced disciplinary action over the past six years.

The doctors’ union said that was a fraction of the vast number of staff working at DHBs, estimated at 60,000.

According to the documents, 356 staff have faced disciplinary action for inappropriate behaviour. Some of the most serious allegations included a trainee anaesthetic technician employed by Waikato DHB who fell asleep during surgery in 2011, and another staff member there who had an inappropriate relationship with a chronically ill patient last year.

The DHB listed 46 serious incidents, including one where a registered nurse was stood down last year after she allegedly took illegal drugs at work.

Another nurse faced disciplinary action in 2013 for “inappropriate use of nitrous oxide” – the anaesthetic commonly known as laughing gas.

Other incidents include staff members supplying illegal drugs to patients, a nurse stealing drugs and an anaesthetic technician who committed fraud.

The DHB declined to provide further details of any of these incidents.

Medical Council chairman Andrew Connolly said he had not heard of staff falling asleep during surgery but was aware of issues relating to drugs and alcohol.

“We’d be very concerned about doctors turning up to work drunk, and stealing drugs is totally unacceptable,” he said.

“If they took two Panadol because they had a bit of a headache we’d say to the DHB, ‘God, just sort it out yourself ’.

“But from time to time we do see a very small number of doctors who develop addiction problems and they may be taking drugs to fuel that.”

Connolly added it was also a very serious breach of professional standards when medical staff developed intimate relationships with patients.

“It is utterly crucial that the doctorpatient relationship remains purely professional. Even if the patient says it was completely consensual, it’s absolutely unacceptable.”

The Capital and Coast DHB listed 14 serious incidents, including one in May last year when a staff member in the mental health department resigned after assaulting a patient. Another staff member resigned after being found to be drunk at work after taking a DHB van without permission and being involved in a crash.

At Auckland DHB, only two staff were stood down between 2009 and 2014, despite 53 people having disciplinary hearings.

In brief Chopper crash kills six A helicopter has crashed south of Kuala Lumpur, killing all six people on board, including Prime Minister Najib Razak’s Chief of Staff and a former ambassador to the United States. The helicopter went down in a rubber plantation in the town of Semenyih with Najib’s principal private secretary, Azlin Alias, aboard. Also among the dead was Jamaluddin Jarjis, an MP and a senior member of Najib’s political party UMNO. Jamaluddin was a former Malaysian ambassador to the United States.

Battle leaves 185 dead Fierce fighting for control of Yemen’s main southern city Aden has left at least 185 people dead, including many civilians, a medical official says.

The port city, a last foothold of supporters of absent President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, has been shaken by more than a week of clashes between Houthi rebels and loyalist militia backed by Saudi-led air strikes.

At least 185 dead and 1282 wounded from the fighting have been counted in hospitals

in Aden since March 26, the city’s health department director Al-Kheder Lassouar said.

Three-quarters were civilians, he added.

The toll does not include victims among the Houthi Shi’ite rebels and their allies who do not take their casualties to public hospitals, he said.

It also excludes victims of air raids by Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Arab countries that have been pounding rebel positions across Yemen since March 26 to try to prevent the fall of

Hadi, who has fled to Riyadh, he added.

Meanwhile, in the rebel-held Yemeni capital Sanaa local residents said at least 10 people were killed and dozens wounded in a separate airstrike by the Saudi-led coalition.

Coalition jets targeted a camp manned by Houthi rebels in the eastern part of Sanaa, but one of their missiles mistakenly hit the village of Hajer Akash, the residents said.

“A search for survivors under the rubble is under way.

Several of the injured people are in critical condition,” a resident said. Lassouar called on international organisations and Arab states participating in the coalition to provide emergency medical assistance to hospitals in Aden.

“Medicine stocks are exhausted and hospitals can no longer cope with the increasing number of victims,” he said.

The United Nations said 519 people had been killed and nearly 1700 injured in two weeks of fighting.

Kenya parades al-Shabab corpses Police have paraded the naked corpses of Somali al-Qaedalinked al-Shabab gunmen who slaughtered almost 150 people in one of Kenya’s worst massacres, hours after the militants threatened “another bloodbath”.

Five men have been arrested in connection with Thursday’s attack, where the gunmen staged a one-day siege at the university in the northeastern town of Garissa.

Earlier on Saturday, the alShabab warned of a “long, gruesome war” unless Kenya withdrew its troops from Somalia. Meanwhile, President Uhuru Kenyatta declared three days of national mourning.

Hours after the group’s warning, police paraded four corpses piled on top of each other face down in the back of a pick-up truck followed by a huge crowd, saying the grim display was to see if anyone could identify the assailants.

But some threw stones at the bodies as they passed, others jeered and shouted at the dead.

Meanwhile, forensic investigators continued to scour the site where one student shocked security forces - who had said all students were accounted for - by emerging unharmed from a wardrobe where she had hidden for more than two days.

A Kenya Red Cross spokes-

woman said that the 19-year old was traumatised and dehydrated but physically unharmed and undergoing assessment by doctors.

The attack on Garissa University, situated near the border with Somalia, claimed 148 lives, including 142 students, three police officers and three soldiers.

“Those children were our future, so part of our future has been destroyed,” Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed said.

More than 600 students from the now closed university boarded buses for the home towns around the country.

The massacre was Kenya’s

deadliest attack since the 1998 bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi, and the bloodiest ever assault by the al-Shabab militants.

Interior ministry spokesman, Mwenda Njoka, said five arrests had already been made, including three “co-ordinators” captured as they fled towards Somalia, and two others in the university.

The name of the three suspected organisers were not given, but Njoka said the two arrested on campus included a security guard at the university, and a Tanzanian named as Rashid Charles Mberesero.

A hundred naturists have converged on a South African beach, which has become Africa’s first official nudist beach, despite objections from some locals. A 500-metre stretch of Mpenjati Beach, which lies on the Indian Ocean, received local government approval last year to become the continent’s first official nudist venue. “It was a fantastic day on the beach, we had lots of people on the beach, no problem whatsoever, wonderful weather, warm water, fantastic beach,” enthused Serge Pavlovic, chairman of the South African National Naturist Association (SANNA).

Saved from croc A woman in India’s Gujarat state successfully rescued her 19-yearold daughter from the jaws of a crocodile after a 10-minute battle, news reports say. Divali Vankar was washing clothes on the banks of the Vishwamitri river near Thikariya Mubarak village in Vadodara district at the weekend when a crocodile grabbed the teenager’s leg, the Times of India newspaper reported. The crocodile started pulling the girl into the river when Divali Vankar picked up a bat used to beat the washing and attacked the crocodile until it let go of the girl, a forest department official was quoted as saying. The girl was treated for injuries to her leg and was in stable condition, the report said.

Frost on sensors French investigators looking into the crash that killed all 116 people aboard an Air Algerie plane in Mali last July have said the crew apparently failed to activate an anti-frost system, causing some sensors to malfunction. Flight AH5017 was en route from Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou to Algiers when it went down in northern Mali just a half hour after take-off. The French civil aviation authority BEA, which at the weekend published its initial findings on its website, said the McDonnell Douglas 83 jet ran into trouble as a result of “frost on the pressure sensors situated on the nose-cone of the motors”. “If the system for protecting against frost on the motors is activated, the pressure sensors are reheated by warm air,” the BEA said, adding that an analysis of available data indicated that the crew apparently did not activate these systems.

With the sensors transmitting erroneous information, the thrust of the motors was hampered and the speed of the plane slowed, causing it to crash.

Losing the past for a different today Sue Newman

E

aster Monday in the Ashburton District in days of yore was a red letter day.

Back when entertainment wasn’t high-tech, when kids of all ages were happy to head off for a day out with mum and dad, community events were where it was at.

In the Ashburton District (or Mid Canterbury as it was back then), Easter Monday was all about the Chertsey Gymkhana, an event that attracted people from around Canterbury. It had it all – horse racing (albeit nontote), side shows, kids’ events, plenty of fatty food, competitions and entertainment. Pure, simple pleasure and much of it free.

The kids with some loose change in their pocket could run wild, fuelling up on hot dogs and candy floss, while mum and dad did what mum and dads did back then, walked around sedately, chatted and if dad could escape for half an hour, headed to the gymkhana booth for a beer.

It was all good harmless fun and by today’s sophisticated standards, it was pretty unpolished stuff.

But like many of those old style events, the Chertsey Gymkhana went out of fashion.

It’s difficult to imagine today’s youngsters being happy to be part of such a grassroots event, to take pleasure in a family outing that was likely to include picnic rugs, ham sandwiches and cordial in plastic cups.

Back then we arrived at Easter Monday after a Sunday that inevitably included church along with Easter eggs and most likely a mid-day Easter Sunday roast with extended family. It was a day of unbridled freedom.

Today, Easter Monday is just part of a glorious four-day break in the routine of work and school. For the fortunate, it’s about heading away to a holiday spot and it will inevitably be about a very different kind of entertainment – passive, electronic instead of imaginative and energetic.

Unfortunately, we’ve lost something special along the way.

was pleased to see statistics released last week which showed the annual crime rate in Mid and South Canterbury had fallen 11.3 per cent last year against the previous year.

Nationally, the crime rate is down 4.2 per cent per head of population.

This is the fifth successive year crime has fallen, and means recorded crime has dropped by more than 100,000 offences compared to 2009.

These results are great news for our communities here, and around New Zealand.

They reflect the hard work of our local police, as well as National’s commitment to tackling crime.

In the Mid and South Canterbury area thefts dropped by 9.3 per cent, unlawful entry 18.6 per cent and illicit drug offences by 8.1 per cent.

While the decrease of some crime types is very welcome, sadly other crimes such as theft, robbery and extortion have increased along with sexual crimes.

We are working hard to ensure our frontline police are able to spend more time on the streets preventing crime and building safer communities, and we will continue to do so.

More police, a prevention first approach, and Neighbourhood Policing Teams, along with additional frontline hours for officers created by the use of smartphones and tablets, are

Delivering better public services for New Zealanders is one of our priorities, and we have been exceeding our targets to reduce crime and keep Kiwi families safer.

ACC levy cuts ACC levy cuts which took effect last week are a further sign of the sound financial management of ACC under this government and I’m sure have been welcomed by everyone.

The cuts were made possible because the ACC scheme is now essentially fully funded, meaning it has enough money invested to meet the future costs of all current claims.

The average work levy paid by employers and self-employed people has fallen by around 5 per cent, and from July 1, the average motor vehicle levy will fall by around 41 per cent.

Specific levies for cars will be publically available later this month – from July 1, cars will

be ‘risk rated’ so that owners of safer cars pay lower levies.

New Zealanders will have around $480 million extra in their back pockets because of the levy cuts that take effect this year following on from cuts totalling $387 million last year.

We’re committed to keeping levies as low as possible, while also ensuring the scheme is sustainable and able to withstand economic volatilities. The scheme is now in the best financial shape it’s ever been.

Far from the maddening crowds of Los Cabos lies the untouched Baja peninsula. It’s a surreal place full of unique flora and fauna, as Dario Lopez-Mills found out on a recent visit.

Brimming with the exotic Far from the sprawling, all-inclusive resorts of Mexico’s Los Cabos is a part of the Baja California peninsula that few tourists ever see, but should.

In one of Mexico’s largest federally protected conservation areas for flora and fauna is a land forested with desert plants that look like they were drawn

by Dr Seuss: candle-like boojum trees and distinctively sculptural elephant trees, towering cardon cacti and other types of succulents.

Sitting in the middle of the peninsula, this little-known spot is the Valle de los Cirios, or Valley of the Boojums. The plants it is named for were dubbed cirios – or candles – in Spanish, evidently because of their resemblance to tapered church candles at the missions nearby.

frey Sykes later christened that same tree the “boojum,” for an imaginary animal character in Lewis Carroll’s nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark.

Birds like pelicans and ospreys abound and peninsular pronghorns, once hunted to near extinction, roam the desert landscape.

Under a Mexican government programme, the hoofed animals are now making a comeback from their once critically endangered status. Among the oldest known mammals in the Americas, the pronghorns are known locally as “ghosts of the desert” because their golden brown or tan colour and white markings helps camouflage them.

Nearby, visitors can see ancient cave paintings depicting deer, whales and humans with six fingers.

The stark beauty and solitude encountered are a far cry from the fancy restaurants, pools with swim-up bars, fishing, snorkelling and sunbathing popular on the southern end of the Sea of Cortez, the long slip of water sandwiched between the Baja Peninsula and Mexico’s mainland.

The peninsula was once eloquently described in a travel journal by American writer John Steinbeck; its stunning coral reefs were praised by ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau.

A short way to the south, magnificent grey whales arrive every year off the Pacific coast town of Guerrero Negro, following one of the world’s longest migration routes.

They mate and calve in the lagoons nearby.

Mexico’s government says there were more than 2600 whales in the lagoons at the end of February, including adults and calves – among the highest numbers in 19 years and 10 per cent more than last season.

It estimates whale-watching could continue through the end of April before the sea mammals head back to Alaska.

Guerrero Negro has a long whaling history and was named for the whaling ship Black Warrior that partially sank in the area in 1858.

Also located here is the largest salt-making facility on the planet. The salt is extracted from ocean water by evaporation, taking advantage of the region’s low yearly rainfall, its large areas of flatlands and high solar radiation.

In brief Blues lose their way It’s become a painful business watching the season play out for the Blues. It’s not purely their lack of cohesion and continuity, more the predictability and nature of the outcome. Once again, the game followed a well worn path on Saturday night. The Blues didn’t lack effort or desire. They stuck at their knitting for 80 minutes. But for all that they appeared to be in the contest, competing valiantly in most aspects, they never convinced as likely winners.

It couldn’t have been a surprise to anyone that after 67 minutes, Tom Marshall squeezed through a despairing tackle to dot down between the sticks and confine the Blues to yet another defeat.- NZME

Horwill misses tour Coach Richard Graham appears to have dumped former Wallabies captain James Horwill for the Reds’ two-match tour to South Africa after he was sent off for the second time this season. Horwill was an intriguing omission from Graham’s 27-man Reds squad named yesterday for the trip to play the Bulls in Pretoria on Saturday and the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein a week later.

Trailing by three points with time running out in damp Johannesburg, the Lions gambled by taking a tap penalty rather than a kick at goal that would almost certainly have ensured a draw. Substitute scrumhalf Faf de Klerk caught the Bulls napping with his tap-and-go penalty and passed to Van der Merwe, who barged over near the post.

AB selectors nervous Having seen Charles Piutau make the surprise decision to suddenly quit New Zealand, rugby officials are increasingly nervous about the intentions of Brodie Retallick and Colin Slade. Both men, as well as Julian Savea and Sam Cane, are yet to say what they will do after the World Cup. The New Zealand Rugby Union are wary. They have been talking for a while ... and still no outcome. The issue for Retallick is wear and tear and Japan holds appeal as a lucrative means to enjoy low impact rugby for a couple of seasons before resuming test football. He may only be 23, but Retallick has hammered his body for the past five years. He’s a full-noise player and while he’s avoided serious injury so far, he has picked up a few dings.

Not everyone will agree, but a season or two in Japan now for an enormous salary, would enable him to bank cash while his star is shining and preserve a body that has probably got a good 10 years in it if carefully managed. - NZME

Crusaders in try-fest The Crusaders scored eight tries to thrash Coastal Sharks 52-10 in a Super Rugby mismatch yesterday despite having only 12 players on the field at one stage.

South African referee Stuart Berry, a late replacement for ill compatriot Marius van der Westhuizen, yellow-carded three New Zealanders within four minutes approaching halftime.

He then red-carded Sharks loose forward Jean Deysel, leaving the home team to play the entire second half with 14 men after trailing 28-3 at the break.

Kings Park is becoming synonymous with red and yellow cards as two Sharks and one player from another New Zealand outfit, the Chiefs, were sent off there two weeks ago.

A Crusaders team dominant in all facets throughout were ahead within three minutes, and secured a bonus-point fourth try with five minutes left of the opening half.

The record seven-time Super Rugby champions cruised to victory despite starting without two All Blacks icons in fly-half Dan Carter and loose forward Richie McCaw. Playmaker Carter left South Africa last weekend after a cruel loss to Northern Bulls in Pretoria to be with his wife, who is expecting their second child.

And All Blacks skipper McCaw was rested, coming off the bench only after 52 minutes when virtually all the damage had been inflicted.

As if a humiliating defeat in the Indian Ocean city was not bad enough for the Sharks, flyhalf and skipper Patrick Lambie retired injured early in the second half.

Despite the walloping yesterday, the South Africans remained third on the combined southern hemisphere interprovincial standings while Crusaders climbed four places to sixth, the last play-offs spot.

McKenzie making every post a winner

By Kris shannon Charles Piutau will be a loss to New Zealand rugby, of that there is no doubt, but the last couple of nights have provided ample evidence that the loss will soon be forgotten.

Twenty-four hours after Nehe Milner-Skudder again shone in the Hurricanes No 15 jersey, Damian McKenzie on Saturday night enjoyed another strong outing at fullback in the narrow Chiefs victory over the Blues in Hamilton.

There is no secret surrounding the talent production line in this country.

With the unerring repetition of Whac-A-Mole, if one player is removed, there are generally two more popping up to take his place.

So while Piutau’s shock move to Ulster was a blow to both the Blues and All Blacks, the 23-year-old closing the door on New Zealand rugby simply opened the window for another crop of exciting rugby youngsters.

It took half a season for Milner-Skudder to emerge from relative obscurity and become an integral member of the highlights reel that is the Hurricanes’ back line.

Damian McKenzie: Attracting plenty of attention in a Chiefs jersey.

Last season’s ITM Cup Championship Player of the Year, Milner-Skudder has been a revelation in his maiden season of Super Rugby.

The 24-year-old’s dynamic footwork ensures him of a bright future and improved decision-making on attack should confirm his status as an All Black-in-waiting.

McKenzie is another who has quickly earned that tag in his debut campaign with the

Chiefs, still a fortnight short of his 20th birthday but performing like an established professional.

A first five-eighth by trade, having played the position at school and for Waikato in last season’s ITM Cup, McKenzie’s gifts are equally apparent while wearing both the No 10 and No 15 jerseys.

Saturday night was perhaps his quietest run at the back, absent of the electric attack-

ing raids he unleashed during an outstanding trip to South Africa, but an ailing knee explained some of that missing spark.

It also illustrated his qualities.

For all the flair on the ball, McKenzie is just as destructive in defence, proving they do indeed breed them tough in Southland.

He appeared to suffer the injury in a textbook tackle on a rampaging Frank Halai, a man who outweighs him by 25kg and a man he had previously bundled into touch to snuff out another attack.

“At times he’s so brave that he runs himself into a bit of trouble,” said Chiefs coach Dave Rennie.

“We’ve been trying to encourage him to link with some of the big guys and let them carry a bit of pill rather than him running into the big men.”

That’s one lesson of a continuing education at fullback - last year’s under-20 world championships supplied his first taste of the position - but McKenzie’s insistence on remaining involved all over the park should help ease the pain of Piutau’s departure.

Front-runners begin to emerge

Three Mid Canterbury sides are established in top four positions following the Easter round of the Combined Country Cup rugby competition.

There is still seven rounds to play before the quarter-finals, but the contenders are beginning to emerge in each section after round two.

Methven and Southern lead the way in section two with two wins to start the season.

Methven collected a second straight bonus point win beating Rolleston 47-3 on Thursday night while in Friday’s lone

fixture Southern held off a second half surge from Saracens to win 30-24 in Hinds.

That has Methven on top and Southern in second.

Hampstead picked up a consolation point in going down to fourth placed Waihora 10-14 to sit sixth - behind Darfield on points differential after Darfield’s 27-12 win over Ohoka.

Burnham-Dunsandel hold third after their second win, a 22-7 win over Ashley.

Rakaia and Celtic both collected their first wins in section two.

Rakaia’s 13-10 win over Prebbleton has them third af-

ter taking two points in their round one defeat to Southbridge.

Celtic secured the four points against fourth-placed Southbridge, but with the results not going their way they remain down in seventh behind Lincoln.

Section Two is led by Glenmark who surprised defending champions Lincoln at home 44-20, while the only other two-win team is Oxford after they beat West Melton 26-19 to sit in second spot, while at the bottom of the table Kaiapoi held off Hornby in a close one 28-26.

Johnson on ‘roving commission’ for Storm clash

By DaviD skipwith Warriors’ prop Ben Matulino has defended the form of halfback Shaun Johnson and says he is playing well on a right side that has changed each week since round one.

Johnson came under fire for a lack of involvement over the opening three games against Newcastle, Canberra and Parramatta and turned in a mixed display in last week’s loss to Brisbane.

Meanwhile, his halves partner Chad Townsend has benefitted from consistent selections on his left edge, forming impressive combinations with Matulino, back-rower Ryan

Hoffman, rookie centre Solomone Kata and veteran wing Manu Vatuvei.

Ahead of tonight’s showdown against the Storm at AAMI Park, Matulino spoke out against the criticism of his No 7 and insisted Johnson was playing his role within the team.

“Shaun’s got a whole new edge on his side and it has been chopping and changing,” Matulino said.

“Obviously he hasn’t really built that chemistry with his right side like Hoffy and Chad have but I think Shaun is playing well within the structure and he’s doing everything that he can to get himself into the

game. I know everyone’s expecting all the steps and cutout balls and flick passes from Shaun but he’s playing well within the structure.”

Despite being designated as the right side playmaker, Warriors coach Andrew McFadden clarified that Johnson had a roving commission to inject himself into the attack on either side of the ruck.

“There’s free license there and you would have seen him, he started to roll around on the other side of the ruck on the weekend (against Brisbane),” McFadden said.

“So you’ll start to see that a little bit more. He knows he’s got a role to play on that right

side but certainly there’s some flexibility around that.”

Meanwhile, Matulino has started the season strongly with impressive showings over the past fortnight seeing him top the rankings on the Dally M leaderboard.

The towering front-rower has set the platform for the Warriors with some good go forward while 11 offloads have helped engineer some dangerous second-phase attacking chances.

“My sister told me about that [Dally M rankings],” Matulino said. “That doesn’t really mean anything to me. As long as we get the win for the team I’ll be happy with that.”

The NBA’s top two teams flexed their muscles yesterday just ahead of the playoffs, with the Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks destroying potential playoff rivals.

Golden State made it 12 straight wins as they took apart Western Conference playoff rival Dallas Mavericks with a 123-110 victory in which they were never headed, despite giving up 54 free throws.

In Atlanta, the Hawks snapped Brooklyn’s winning streak in emphatic fashion, running out 131-99 winners over the Nets. The Boston Celtics re-took eighth spot with a 117-116 overtime win over the Raptors in Toronto.

Narrow loss to Japan The Black Sticks Women could not continue their winning momentum yesterday, going down 1-0 to Japan in a tough game in Auckland. The Black Sticks made one change from Saturday’s game with Rosie Keddell coming in for Kirsten Pearce. The first half was an even contest, with goalkeeper Amelia Gibson continuing her good form, keeping the Japanese at bay to see both sides head to the halftime break locked at 0-0.

The breakthrough came for Japan early in the third quarter when a searching long ball from the back found Mie Nakashima who pushed a square ball in to Akiko Kato to give the Japanese the lead. - NZME

Sharks stun Roosters A Jack Bird-inspired Cronulla have stunned the Sydney Roosters with a well-deserved 20-12 win over the 2013 NRL premiers at Allianz Stadium yesterday. The 20-yearold, playing in only his second NRL game and his first at five-eighth scored two tries as the Sharks sealed their first win of the year. It is their sixth against the Roosters since 2010 to end a run of 10 straight losses.

Adventador right at home Lightly raced six-year-old Adventador once again displayed his prowess in a fresh state when he led all the way to claim victory on his home track at Hastings on Saturday. The Guy Lowry and Grant Cullen trained speedster, who hadn’t been sighted since finished a gallant sixth in the Gr. 1 Telegraph at Trentham in January, displayed his customary speed from the barrier to head straight to the front and jockey Hayden Tinsley dictated the race to his five rivals.

Champ shows true class

It wasn’t quite the finale his fans were hoping for but Terror To Love walked off Addington Raceway on Saturday night with his head held high and his faithful singing his praises from the rooftops.

The champion pacer produced a stunning effort to finish third in the Group One Easter Cup after seemingly losing all chance with an early gallop that would have left many others hapless.

But Terror To Love, as he has shown time and time again, is no ordinary racehorse and has made a reputation for himself as being one who is capable of doing quite incredible things.

The performance was one more akin to a horse on the top of his game and not one who is facing life in the paddock as a retired racehorse-cum-stallion.

After adding a least another 20

metres to his 20 metre handicap, the three-time New Zealand Trotting Cup winner caught back up and had the audacity to run past some of the best horses in the country to finish less than half a length from race winner, Christen Me. The opportunity was there for the hundreds who had flocked to Addington to watch his final race to feel dejected and be asking the question of ‘what if ?’.

Instead they lined the fences and stood in the stands and applauded as one of the modern day greats of harness racing made his way back into the stabling enclosure for the final time. It was truly hair-raising stuff. And a sight often unseen on race courses around the world these days.

But as he has done from his first New Zealand Cup win almost five years ago, Terror To Love was the horse people

went to the races to cheer on.

Fans from all over New Zealand were in attendance on Saturday night and they didn’t leave disappointed, instead reflecting on what a great occasion it had been.

“It was just fantastic to say that we were here to watch him race,’’ a fan from Dunedin said.

“We have followed him with great interest for a while now and decided that he was worth making the trip up for and I’m so pleased we did.’’

Immediately following the race the word was being spread around that after a performance like that, Graham and Paul Court and owner Terry McDonald wouldn’t be deemed crazy to cancel their plans and look toward another Cup. But they stayed firm.

“He’s been a fantastic horse for me, my best mate in fact,’’ McDonald said.

“I’m so pleased he ran such a great race tonight and that the people out there got to see him turning in one of his brilliant races that have made me so proud of him.

“It’s been a fun, but all good things must come to an end - now I just need to find the next one which won’t be easy ... hopefully it’s one of his sons or daughters.’’

Terror To Love will stand at Court and McDonald’s Pinelea Farm in the up coming breeding season and he’s sure to attract the attention of breeders considering his ability to win at all ages over all distances.

And the chances of this champion producing a prodigy who could match up to him?

He’s been a horse who has been able to do the unthinkable, so you would suggest that the chances might just be better than good.

Marsh eyes black type prize Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh is expecting good things from promising two-year filly Girlsarebackintown at Ellerslie today but it is a bigger challenge in a fortnight where he hopes his charge will shine the brightest.

The showy grey filly has placed third in each of her three career runs to date and has been spotted finishing her races off strongly, a trait that Marsh believes will serve her well when she tackles the 1300 metres of the DJ O’Sullivan Salver at Ellerslie.

“I’ve been delighted with what she has done to date as I have always believed she was a filly who would be at her best over more ground as a three-year-old,” explained Marsh. “After her run at New Plymouth where she made really good ground against the pattern of the day we decided to give her a small break in the paddock and set her for the two-year-old mile at Ellerslie on Easter Handicap day.

“The way she has been attacking the line indicates the mile shouldn’t be a problem and she won’t mind any easing in the track if we get any rain.”

That race is the Listed Windsor Park Champagne Stakes that will be run on Gr. 1 Manco Easter Handicap Day with Marsh expecting to meet a number of the filly’s rivals on Monday again in a fortnight.

“Our filly has been working really well and I do expect a forward showing but she may have her work cut out against a couple of the smart ones who are lining up against her,” he said.

“Shaune Ritchie’s filly (Let Her Rip) looked exceptional in her debut and I think she will be the hardest to beat. Whatever we do I know that my filly will improve markedly and when we get to the mile I expect her to be at the top of her game.”

Marsh has a further two runners entered today where he will be looking to extend his current stable record tally of 41 wins for the season.

“Stars In Align is dropping back from the elite grade in the New Zealand Oaks to rating 65 company so she will definitely appreciate that,” he noted.

Treble for O’Sullivan The training partnership of Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott continued their stellar season when they registered a winning treble at Hastings on Saturday. The three victories took the stable’s tally to 40 for the season to date with plenty more to come judging by the performances of Saturday’s winning trio. Promising two-year-old filly Fascinate Me set the tone with a gritty performance to register her maiden victory in the Niagara at Lime Country Sprint (1100m). Chelsea keeps EPL lead

By Tom Williams Chelsea weathered an extraordinary 65-yard goal by Charlie Adam to re-establish their sevenpoint lead at the Premier League summit with a 2-1 defeat of Stoke City yesterday.

Arsenal had earlier trimmed Chelsea’s lead to four points by blitzing Liverpool 4-1 and a twist appeared in store when Adam cancelled out Eden Hazard’s 39thminute penalty in show-stopping fashion at Stamford Bridge.

A minute before half-time, the Scottish midfielder picked up a loose ball deep inside his own half and launched a raking shot with his left foot that Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois could only help into the net.

It was a goal that brought to mind David Beckham’s famous lob against Wimbledon in 1996

and Chelsea’s cause was further harmed when Diego Costa limped off with a hamstring injury.

But Loic Remy gave Chelsea victory in the 62nd minute, tapping home a pass from Hazard after Willian had intercepted Asmir Begovic’s throw, to leave Jose Mourinho’s side seven points clear with a game in hand.

“Every victory is one step ahead,” Mourinho told the BBC. “The others know they have to win every game. For us, we have to think about ourselves and forget about the others.”

By JusTin Davis Carlos Tevez hit his 17th goal of the campaign and Roberto Pereyra added a late second as Juventus beat Empoli 2-0 in Turin yesterday to restore their 14-point lead on Roma.

Roma had earlier ended a fourmonth wait for victory at the Stadio Olimpico when Miralem Pjanic struck in the 25th minute to seal a 1-0 win for Rudi Garcia’s men over Napoli.

But Juve’s 21st win of the season restored their sizeable advantage and underlined their status as champions in waiting.

Thunder rolls through Methven

Local racers got amongst the results in the annual Mountain Thunder street race in Methven on Saturday.

The race around the tight 1km circuit in the centre of Methven attracted a big field of 150 rid-

ers from across New Zealand.

Ashburton teenager Bailie Perriton bounced back from a troubled nationals campaign last month take out the Buckets, completing a three-year slide up the podium at the Mountain Thunder in Methven. Perriton’s Suzuki FXR150 was third in

20123 and came in second last year but was able to outgun fellow Ashburton teen Lewis Dray to take the win this time around.

Perriton was unable to defend his title in the Junior Clubman 250 class, settling for second behind Dennis Charlett.

Bryan O’Hara (81) showed

that age was no barrier as the local legend contested the Pre 63 350cc coming in third, and he also rode in the Pre82 junior class.

In the Formula Methven Ashburton’s Andrew Rudd rode his Honda CBR600 to second overall behind Dan McKenzie on a

Honda CBR1000, with Charlett third on a Suzuki SV650.

Special guest for the weekend, motocross rider Josh Coppins, swapped the dirt for tarseal and the 38-year-old former world number two showed his class in taking out the Super Motard class.
