Hundreds of fireworks fans descended on Rakaia Domain on Saturday night to enjoy a “marvellous” night of family fun, food and pyrotechnic entertainment.

The district’s only annual organised fireworks display, the Rakaia Lions Club fireworks night proved a roaring success once again.

Though strong gusts left a few people questioning whether the event would still be held, Kevin Cameron of the Rakaia Lions Club said there were no issues.

“The wind didn’t end up being a problem in the end – it died down and we were still able to light the bonfire, and the fireworks still went really well,” he said.

He said Rakaia firefighters were close by to help if anything did go amiss.

Other entertainment on the night included face-painting, fire-juggling “Mullet Man” from Christchurch, Ashburton band the Kopy Kats, along with food stalls set up by the Rakaia Lions Club and local schools, kindergarten and scouting groups.

Cameron said he was very happy with the number of people who came along to enjoy the evening.

“I think the turnout was excellent this year – our stall sold out of chips and hotdogs.”

He said the money raised from gold coin donations at the entrance, along with that collected by the Lions stalls, will help fund the fireworks along with other community projects.

Driver injured in crash

One fire sparked by fireworks

A driver was left in a serious condition and his car totalled after an incident near Mayfield on Saturday afternoon.

The 35-year-old driver was travelling along Mayfield Valetta Road at around 1.50pm, when he lost control of his vehicle and rolled off the side of the road.

The incident occurred in a 100km speed limit zone, and the car rolled over a fence into a field.

The driver was tested for excess breath alcohol by police then airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in a serious condition by Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Mayfield Rural Fire Unit, Police and St John Ambulance also rushed to the scene. One lane was initially blocked, but cleared around 3pm.

Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. It is not yet known if the driver proved to have excess breath alcohol, or if any charges were laid.

All smiles when Malcolm met Jacinda It could have been awkward, but the first faceto-face meeting between Malcolm Turnbull and New Zealand’s new Labour prime minister Jacinda Ardern appeared to go as sweet as.

The prime ministers are from different sides of politics, of different generations and disagree on some significant issues.

But after a “candid” two-hour brunch on Sunday morning at Kirribilli House – the prime minister’s official Sydney residence – the pair announced the Jacinda Ardern relationship

between the two countries was as solid as ever.

“Some of the issues that we have been discussing today were challenging, but I appreciate that as close friends and allies who are able to discuss them quite frankly,” Ms Ardern told reporters, describing the relationship as “family”.

Mr Turnbull said they pair got on “very well” and would continue to do so.

“We trust each other totally – New Zealand and Australia are as close as can be and we always will be and the fact that we’re from different political traditions is irrelevant,” Mr Turnbull told media gathered at Kirribilli House yesterday.

There was no sign of any feared residual diplomatic ill-will between the prime ministers, after Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop suggested she would find it hard to trust a Labour government in Wellington when Barnaby Joyce’s citizenship saga emerged.

When asked about previous criticisms from Ms Ardern over the deportation of New Zealanders and a possible retaliation over a rise in tertiary fees, Mr Turnbull replied the Australian government was committed to its policies. While the pair started off covering the pricklier issues they told reporters they had bonded over both having a link to Ms Ardern’s hometown of Hamilton, where Mr Turnbull’s mother Coral had lived at one time.

They also joked about their musical performances – Ms Ardern DJing and Mr Turnbull rapping.

“This is not announcing our joint act,” Ms Ardern laughed.

While Ms Ardern didn’t make it on to Sydney Harbour to kayak with Mr Turnbull like former NZ PM John Key (who had also stayed at Mr Turnbull’s private residence), she did offer to take Mr Turnbull fishing.

“I am no kayaker but ... I can fish,” Ms Arden said.

Mid Cantabrian “common sense” has helped keep the number of firework-related incidents down for another year.

Ashburton fire and emergency services only attended one fire sparked by fireworks on Saturday night, and were yesterday crossing their fingers for another quiet night.

The incident occurred on Fords Road in Tinwald at around 12.22am on Saturday. Fire volunteers were working on the scene for about half an hour, after fireworks sparked a small vegetation fire.

Ashburton Fire and Emergency Chief Officer Alan Burgess said the rate of fireworks-related incidents was generally “quite low level” in the district.

“Generally people use common sense, and the message is really getting out there to be careful,” he said. However, he said yesterday’s wind could be a bit of a concern, and hoped that people would not continue to use fireworks if it became too extreme.

“It is a bit of a concern given that things are drying out – it ramps up the need to be extremely cautious,” he said.

Last year the fire service launched a system to specifically monitor and record the number of firework-related callouts.

Man hurt in bonfire A man was seriously burned after falling into a bonfire in Pukekohe as fire crews responded to a steady stream of Guy Fawkesrelated call-outs overnight.

The man was taken to hospital after falling into the fire about 8.30pm on Saturday night, a Fire and Emergency spokesman said.

He was in stable condition at Middlemore Hospital’s burns unit yesterday.

Social housing project a winner

Ashburton’s first community–social agency joint venture, a social housing project, is being hailed a success by its administrator Presbyterian Support.

Providing affordable living options within the Ashburton District for people unable to afford market rental had long been a dream for Presbyterian Support manager Jackie Girvan.

She’d explored a number of ideas but none gained sufficient

traction to become more than just an idea.

That all changed when developer Jamie Dalzell bought a large property on Miller Avenue.

He was prepared to reconfigure the house to accommodate up to eight people, he approached Girvan and the housing project was born.

Two weeks ago the first tenants moved in and now that number has now grown to five.

A sixth will take up residence next week.

Finding tenants wasn’t difficult, Girvan said.

“They really came to us so we haven’t had to go out there touting for business.”

While the initial idea was to provide accommodation for older people, current residents are a little younger, probably 40 upwards, but it’s definitely not for young people, she said.

“I’m just delighted with the way this is working out.”

The project had been helped significantly by a donation of

$5000 from Ashburton Red Cross.

“That was like magic for us,” Girvan said.

That donation meant the house is now well stocked with bedroom furniture, outdoor furniture, a chest freezer and a good range of kitchen equipment, crockery and cutlery. Residents are only required to bring their own bedding and towels.

As managers of the house, Presbyterian Support has set the house rules and these are all based around consideration for

fellow residents, she said.

Key in choosing tenants had been ensuring the mix of personalities would work.

“This is done very carefully as we have to make sure we’re protecting all tenants.”

While it was still early days, Girvan said the project was shaping up to be an excellent example of a partnership that offered a commercially viable deal for the property owner through room rental at the same time as it met the needs of the social agency involved.

Scout groups face off at rally

Seven scouting groups from across Mid Canterbury faced off at a rally at the weekend.

The Mania-O-Roto Scouting Grounds in Hampstead hosted the annual competitive camp from Friday to yesterday afternoon.

The rally saw groups assessed on a variety of activities, along with their behaviour, tenting skills and overall cleanliness.

Hinds scout leader Lori Rusbatch said the event was the result of two terms worth of meticulous planning, teaching and preparation.

“Overall, the scouts have done an awesome, awesome job,” she said.

“I’m very proud of them.”

During the camp, the scouts were tasked with creating a project for the younger kea and cub groups to enjoy.

The groups successfully created rope bridges, swings, slides and obstacle courses, and were assessed on the neatness and safety of their lashings.

Rusbatch said the groups were also judged on their ability to cook and present a meal on Saturday night, and their performance in a shooting competition yesterday.

The most improved group, the group with the best overall camping skills, and an individual who had received a Chief Scout Award were honoured at an awards ceremony held yesterday afternoon.

The Mid Canterbury, or Mania-O-Roto region, encompasses eight scout groups in total.

Hopes high for good season

A warm September means this season’s Mid Canterbury asparagus harvest will last longer than usual – but it’s been a little patchy in the first few weeks.

John and Helen Cunliffe grow asparagus on their Tinwald farm, following in the footsteps of John’s parents, who began growing the crop there in 1972.

The season normally lasts about six weeks, Mrs Cunliffe said, but warmer than usual September weather means this year it will likely last for around 10 weeks, finishing about the first week of December.

Although it was still early days, Mrs Cunliffe said she was expecting a pretty good harvest this year.

The Cunliffes sell their asparagus locally at the Ashburton New World and the Green Grocer in Tinwald, with the rest of it going to Christchurch.

After picking winds up the asparagus will be left to their own devices until next spring and the Cunliffes’ team will turn its attention to the courgette, pumpkin and gherkin crops, which should be ready after Christmas.

Man dies during race A man is dead after falling from his yacht during a race at Fiordland’s Lake Te Anau. Police say the man in his 60s fell into the water on Saturday afternoon during an annual event. Although other vessels managed to find him shortly afterwards, he could not be revived, a police spokeswoman said.

Kim Dotcom to marry German internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom is reportedly getting married on the sixth anniversary of the “military-style” raid on his mansion in New Zealand. The 43-year old is set to tie the knot with 23-year-old New Zealander Elizabeth Donnelly on January 20, he said. Last week Dotcom announced he had reached a confidential settlement in his lawsuit against the New Zealand police force over the raid, in which over 70 heavily armed officers descended on his $NZ30 million mansion near Auckland to arrest him at the request of the US. - DPA

Prices steady The October QV House Price Index paints a ‘steady-as-she-goes’ picture for many parts of New Zealand with property values shifting sideways for the month.

This trend was reflected in Ashburton where the average current value of $345,879 had moved very little over the past month. It was, however, down 1.4 per cent on October 2016.

Across the South Island values rose over the past 12 months in most districts apart from the West Coast and parts of Christchurch.

Values continued to race up in Mackenzie, by 26.4 per cent over 12 months with Southland next on 17.5 per cent growth.

Queenstown Lakes remains the South Island’s most expensive place to buy with an average value of $1.092 million and Buller it’s cheapest, $185,849.

Nine areas in Auckland now have average prices well above $1 million.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she supports the work of Kiwi troops in Iraq but hasn’t made any commitment to extend their role beyond next November. Troops won’t be withdrawn early but there will be a review of the joint training mission with Australian forces in Taji before their mandate comes up for renewal next year.

The mission came up in Ms Ardern’s talks with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in Sydney yesterday. Ms Ardern made no commitment to Mr Turnbull beyond what’s in place now. “It is a complex conflict, things could change dramatically between now and then,” she said. “Certainly we’ll be looking at the outcomes and what we’ve achieved through that joint deployment at the point that that mandate comes up for renewal.”

1. How many nurses and health care assistants work at Terrace View? How many are fulltime and part-time? How many women, how many men?

We have 10 registered nurses and three enrolled nurses, all female. Most are fulltime, however two have part-time contracts and two are on a casual contract. We also have 18 caregivers, 14 female and four male. Four are casual, two on permanent part-time and the rest are fulltime.

2. How many residents are at Terrace View?

Currently, we have 56 residents.

3. Are the nurses and healthcare assistants vs residents meeting the ratio implemented by the Ministry of Health?

The staff at Terrace View meet the contractual requirements of the Ministry of Health. There is one healthcare assistant to five residents in the hospital level of care.

4. Do nurses and healthcare assistants look after everyone, including people in villas?

Nurses and caregivers look after 44 residents who are either resthome level, hospital level or those who have nursing packages in their apartments. The rest are attended to as the need arises.

5. Do nurses and healthcare assistants have a daily routine?

Yes, they both do, however, routines are flexible depending on the residents’ needs and health status. Part of the nurses’ daily routine is to see every resident, follow up reports of being unwell and health monitoring requirements requested by GPs. For the healthcare assistants, encouraging residents to meet their daily health care needs and assisting them to attend the activities they wish to be involved with is part of their daily routine.

6. What training do nurses and caregivers have?

We have caregivers holding Level 3 Career Force National Qualification in Health and Wellbeing Health Assistance or its equivalent. There is one holding Level 6. There are nine fulltime, part-time and casual caregivers who are working towards this qualification at this time.

Registered staff are trained in syringe driver use, first aid, interRAI and palliative care.

Other training includes, but is not limited to, colostomy, urostomy, catheter care; alcohol abuse and management in the elderly; continence and catheter care; falls prevention, medication management; hand hygiene and infection control; dementia and challenging behaviour and many more.

7. Is there any ongoing training provided by Terrace View?

We offer ongoing training on a monthly basis or more often if required.

8. How about communication – is it easy or hard to deal with residents? How is the reporting to families of residents?

We have an open-door policy in Terrace View.

The residents can come and see the Facility Manager and Clinical Care Manager during business hours for any concerns. In the absence of the managers, the registered nurses are on duty 24/7 for any concerns. We report via phone, mobile or emails to the families regularly during reviews or sooner if there is a change in the residents’ health status. We also have regular residents’ meetings where families are welcome to attend. We also have special occasions where we invite families to join us to celebrate.

What are the most common residents’ fears?

Often, residents fear that they will lose their independence once they come into the retirement village. Another fear is not being able to do what they want, when they want like home. They are also afraid of losing connections to the community or that resthome life is boring.

9. How do you deal with those fears?

When a new resident arrives, he or she will go through an assessment organised by a nurse.

This assessment, both medical and holistic, will help the nurse develop a personalised care plan in order to know the new residents well and address his or her fears. This plan gives the healthcare assistants all the information they need to support the residents the best they can.

10. Do you have specialists coming in or do you take residents out in case of important medical problems?

We call specialists in on an as-needed basis.

We have a regular physiotherapist who comes in weekly. The podiatrist comes in every six weeks. We call on dieticians, an occupational therapist, palliative care nurse specialists, a speech language therapist, gerontologist and other specialists when the need arises to come and visit.

11. Do you do anything with residents other than providing medical care?

The nurses focus mainly on medically unwell residents, however, the healthcare assistants provide more of a holistic approach. We also have hairdressers who come twice weekly.

Volunteers come and take residents for a walk outside Terrace View.

The residents also enjoy varied activities from van outings, crafts, music and entertainment, happy hour, weekly movies and so much more.

The residents and family can look at our weekly activities schedule. The activities are facilitated by our activities team and diversional therapist.

12. Do some of your residents’ health improve once they have moved to Terrace View?

Yes, some people definitely improve as we promote their well-being by providing them with structures. For example their meals are scheduled at certain times as well as their medication, some of them exercise more and do more activities than they were doing at home which helps improve their health and well-being.

13. Anything else you feel is important about the nurses and caregivers that should be mentioned?

We have a passionate team of care staff and nurses who are resident-care focused. The team believes in providing a high standard of care.

We are very proud that we have a friendly and welcoming work environment created by our team.

The Ashburton Maori community has much in common with the many migrant groups in this district.

In the past 40 years they have come from another island, the North Island of New Zealand, leaving their families, local traditions and marae behind.

They have come from many different parts of the North Island to an area which had no history of Maori settlement, although it was widely known as a food-gathering area from the early days of the moa hunters, to the availability of birds in the foothills and fish in the lakes, streams, wetlands and rivers.

families lived in the district until the 1970s when a few, who had come from different areas of the North Island, decided to bring people together with help from neighbours from Taunutu on Lake Ellesmere.

A branch of the Maori Women’s Welfare League was formed; a Maori youth club, then a marae or meeting place was established.

People worked hard to establish a Maori community to make Hakatere Marae a home away from home, where weddings and birthdays could be celebrated and people could come together for tangihana (funerals).

Since those early days the Maori population has grown

to over 2000, but tend to stay within family groups and remain loyal to their home marae.

However, the spirit of Maoridom is still strong in the community with people supporting each other in time of tragedy and getting together when help is needed.

Shift work, sport and family demands have all impacted on our communities and the Maori migrant community is no exception.

Credit must go to those who give their time and energy to building healthy, vibrant and caring communities.

I

’m Katijah Hashim. I am a mother or four, three young men and a beautiful young lady. I’m in my late 50s and originally from Singapore.

My husband and I have previously lived in Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia. We decided to come to New Zealand when my youngest started experiencing some difficulties adapting to the Singapore school and education system. The education and lifestyle here in New Zealand have been perfect for bringing up our last two children, who were 7 and 11 years old, 11 years ago and so we decided to make the move to New Zealand.

Moving from home is not easy.

My eldest later settled back in Australia and over the years my third son also moved back home after high school.

Singaporean boys need to serve in compulsory National Service for two years once they are 18 years old.

With just the three of us here I started missing them a lot but I also felt nostalgic for my large family and the close bonds we all had back home.

I think that this is something all migrants go through. Half of your heart is here and the other still in the home you left.

I stayed in Ashburton since day one in New Zealand.

The most beautiful thing that touches my heart is that people can pass each other with a smile and a ‘hi’ and even ‘how are you?’.

But, alas, these had changed.

Over the years ‘hi’ and ‘how are you?’ have become less frequent … but the smiles remain.

I don’t know if this is because of the current global climate, but I hope that Ashburtonians will see that us Muslims who live here are regular people just like them, who want to contribute to making our community a better place for everyone.

I find Kiwis to be sincere and

honest with their smile and words. They are kinder in action and trusting towards others.

This doesn’t mean others are not.

But I have truly felt a very positive impact, communicating with Ashburtonians and Kiwis.

My neighbours, my friends, colleagues, people I work with around me have been very nice.

I guess they are okay that I go around with this scarf of mine on my head.

Since coming to New Zealand, my husband has found stable work at Anzco Foods.

I initially got a job with the NZ Sock Company. Then I worked as a caregiver with Coldstream Resthome and Hospital for about five years.

I love working as a carer because interacting and helping people is part of my passion and is the Islamic way of life.

Since resigning from being a caregiver, I spend my free time helping my community be it officially or not. I am active in our local Ashburton Muslim Association and have also volunteered for SEEDS. I occasionally help with the Mid Canterbury Newcomers Network and do anything I can to help welcome new members of our community and make them feel at home.

Coming into New Zealand is a little less challenging than my previous experience of living in Australia.

Being a Muslim as well as being from a different ethnic and culture is sometimes difficult for people to deal with.

Once, in Australia, I got rude remarks from someone who interrupted a conversation with my daughter.

The person told me off and said that I should speak English.

I’ll tell you something though … I’m not deterred by negativity. I believe everyone should be proud of their roots and culture.

Everyone has the right to be who they are.

I learn to use what I have. I have made efforts to improve my English and try to gain more confidence. My English is not too bad I think and it gets me around. I have been able to break down the language barrier and make new friends here from different cultures, who speak different languages.

It is in my nature to like to talk to people and get to know them!

I also like to cook and my neighbours and friends enjoy my food and company.

Food is a love that gets people together.

If I have a message for new-

comers and anyone who will read this it is this one; Be kind and you will receive kindness in return regardless of who you are. Stay away from negativity – life is too short for that! Be positive, find your voice and use it. Stay strong, create happiness and be a good friend/person; in fact, be the best you can. People are in New Zealand for various reasons. Starting life away from home is never easy. Lacking life skills in a foreign land deprives people from getting basic needs.

Please be a volunteer in whatever community work you can choose from. SEEDS needs volunteers from diverse ethnic groups at the moment. New mums who just migrated have often have doubts and worries.

They are more comfortable talking and trusting people they feel can relate to their experiences, may it be from the same country, or who share the same language or even the same faith.

If you are a migrant yourself you surely know what that is like.

Never think you can do nothing because everyone has hidden potential within them.

ummer is here and we are excited to make the most of the longer days and beautiful weather to take our activities outside and explore what Mid Canterbury has to offer.

Our October potluck dinner party saw us head to the Allenton Bowling Club to try one of Ashburton's favourite activities ... lawn bowls!

The weather turned it on and Richard, Wendy and Bob, our co-hosts and coaches for the day gave us a crash course before letting us loose on the green.

We then headed to the club rooms for a delicious dinner and were treated to a wonderful dessert spread by the ladies from Altrusa Ashburton.

We finished the evening challenging one another to impromptu speeches facilitated by Geoff from the local Toast Masters Club. It was my last potluck dinner party as the co-ordinator of the MCNN.

The theme for this month is “community”.

I thought it a fitting concept to explore, as our own community prepares itself to move forward with a new co-ordinator and invigorated by the successes of this year.

We are sitting at a crossroads between what we are and what we can grow into and the future of the network and its place in our community both look very exciting!

I am extremely proud to announce that the new coordinator of the Mid Canterbury Newcomers Network is Adi Avnit!

Adi and his family migrated from Israel earlier this year and he has been actively involved in the MCNN ever since as a volunteer.

Adi has brought fresh ideas and helped us improve our logistical and administrative efficiency and has been a great support with our monthly dinners.

He has a passion for newcomers and thinks in terms of what we can do for the community, which I think will bring a great new perspective to the role and

to the network.

Finding or rebuilding a community that we can relate to is one of the biggest challenges we face as newcomers.

This is something that Katijah, who has been profiled in this month’s interview, touches on as well.

Our community has evolved a lot in the past year. It has indeed been a great year with increased and more diverse membership, good attendance to our community events, the co-creation of a warm feeling of friendship among newcomers and the building of strong bridges with our wider local community.

When I look around I see a kaleidoscope of ethnicities, cultures, flavours, traditions and perspectives.

Of course, as any growing community, we are a work in progress but I am proud of what we have achieved here at the Mid Canterbury Newcomers Network and of our rich, multi-faceted and multi-cultural community.

We all have a role to play in this contemporary and multicultural Ashburton and it has been

an honour to bring my voice to our shifting collective consciousness.

Engage with your local community this summer!

Who knows, maybe you’ll make new friends, finally meet your neighbours, try different food, listen to cool music you’ve never heard and nurture your sense of belonging.

Finally, I want to say that it is together that we will grow so please continue to make others

feel as welcomed here as you have made me.

I would once more like to extend my sincere congratulations to Adi. I look forward to watching the network thrive with your leadership!

Art that invites intrigue

You won’t find Elfie Spiewack’s necklaces, brooches and rings sitting behind the glass panes of a jewellery store.

Instead, you’ll find them suspended on gallery walls, inviting open-minded intrigue.

Working with organic materials like bone and antlers juxtaposed with gold and pearl, the Lyttelton-based contemporary jeweller believes she can challenge pre-conceived ideas around the value of jewellery.

Next week, Spiewack will launch a new exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery, its first showing in New Zealand.

Entitled In Splendour Moot, Adornment Re-framed, the exhibition delves into the renaissance, baroque and Victorian era of jewellery, exploring the traditional pieces worn by those of high social ranking in their portrait paintings.

“I want to question traditional definitions of beauty,” Spiewack said. “To create a broader idea of what jewellery can be.”

In the exhibition, Spiewack has taken reproductions of the paintings, edited out the jewellery and created new, threedimensional pieces, which are presented on the flat printed surface of their paintings.

Materials used include those of high monetary value like gold, silver and pearls, blended with those of low monetary value like antlers, synthetic hair and animal bones.

She said each piece takes hours of painstaking work to prepare.

“For the animal bones, I literally get them from the butcher,” she said.

“I’ve been working on this exhibition intensely and full-time for about six months.”

In Splendour Moot also features an interactive mirror installation which gives viewers the chance to try on Spiewack’s adornments for themselves.

Spiewack said nature has always been a big inspiration to her work.

“Working with ordinary materials and elevating them, putting them into a different context, is what interests me,” she said.

Spiewack has worked in the world of contemporary jewellery since 1996, and immigrated to New Zealand in 1999.

She was born in Germany and studied Jewellery Design at the Pforzheim College of Design.

She also holds a BA in Jewellery and Object Design and has worked in Montreal, Canada and

While her European background has introduced her to aesthetics and designs, the abundance of organic materials

in New Zealand have also helped shape the direction of her work.

She said concepts are more and more influenced by her home here.

In Splendour Moot, Adornment Re-framed will open to the public at Ashburton Art Gallery from November 19 to January 21.

Spiewack will also be speaking the opening of the exhibition at

2.30pm next Sunday, discussing her practice and the concepts behind her work.

Summer school holiday activities inspired by the exhibition will also run at the gallery from December 16 to January 21.

Visitors will be invited to make their own adornment from recycled materials including bottle caps, old beads and buttons.

Kids-only exhibition challenges the cost of art

A one-day, kids-only exhibition is touching down at the Ashburton Art Gallery on November 16.

The Muka Youth Print exhibition will showcase original contemporary art exclusively for children aged five to 18, with free

entry between 1pm and 6pm.

A collection of 40 lithographic prints, 100x200mm in size, have been created by well-known artists from around the world for the event, and each will be up for grabs for $75.

The Muka Youth Print Project challenges the “stumbling block”

of the cost of artwork, which can be a problem for young collectors trying to get acquainted with contemporary art.

In the exhibition, the names of artists are obscured so prints are chosen for their appeal rather than monetary value.

Visitors can only enter once,

and buy a maximum of three artworks.

The Muka Youth Project was founded in the 1980s and has been travelling New Zealand since. It has helped acquaint more than 60,000 artworks with young collectors around the country.

NZ’s roads are killing us Katie Todd

A

s we clamber inside our vehicles to scoot up, down and around the country, we can all too easily be afflicted with a sense of invincibility.

Cloaked behind the anonymity of a metal shell and bearing thousands of horsepower underfoot, the roads become our concrete playground.

We can surge up and down State Highway 1 internally cursing at the tailgaters and slowcoaches, and weaving nimble paths around the plodding trucks.

We can lose ourselves gazing at the spectacular alpine scenery and chanting along to high-volume catchy tunes (Well, I know I do anyway).

And we can shake our heads at the dreaded New Zealand Police branded bills which occasionally land in our letterbox from Marion Square.

But the many liberties of driving belie a very ugly truth: New Zealand’s roads are killing us.

A whopping 373 lives have ended on roads around the country this year, including 45 in Canterbury and three in the Ashburton District.

That’s 101 more people than the year before, and the next notch in an ominously upward trend.

It’s also an unthinkable number of lovers, friends and relatives whose worlds have been shaken with devastating and completely avoidable news.

When will we start taking more care?

I urge each one of you to look at the flipped car on page two of today’s Guardian. This driver survived thanks to the hasty efforts of St John and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, but so many others aren’t as fortunate.

His crash happened in split seconds, and it could have been any one of us.

It’s never a bad time remember that every single crash is preventable. No destination, view, song or moment of road rage can possibly be more important than the safety of yourself and others on the road.

So here’s my plea to you, motorists of Mid Canterbury. Let that antsy vehicle past on the highway. Check twice before you veer onto a new road. Put down the phone. And when your blood is boiling at the slow driver in front – take deep breaths.

We don’t want to write about your fatal crash.

New government inherits strong tailwind L

ast week employment figures for the last three months were released.

They show that the unemployment rate across New Zealand has dropped to just 4.6 per cent, the lowest rate since the Global Financial Crisis nine years ago.

The employment rate is the highest it’s ever been. 2.6 million New Zealanders are now in work.

In Canterbury the numbers are even stronger. Unemployment here is just 3.6 per cent, the second lowest of any region across New Zealand.

We have one of the fastest growing economies in the developed world.

That growth has pushed up wages. The average wage across New Zealand is now $59,840, an increase of 28 per cent in National’s nine years in Government.

What’s worrying is, that set against this backdrop of strong growth, the new three-party coalition Government are already talking New Zealand’s prospects down.

Within hours of becoming deputy prime minister, Winston Peters, was warning of “dark days

ahead” for the New Zealand economy.

We shouldn’t accept that.

The Treasury, tasked with providing economic modelling to the New Zealand Government, have forecast strong growth if current settings are maintained.

The only thing that could upset that, and bring on the “dark days” Peters refers to, would be a significant shock to world markets, or major changes to domestic policy.

This is perhaps what Peters is worried about.

Between the three parties that now make up the Government there are a myriad of anti-growth policies that would harm our economy, and risk people’s jobs.

A series of new taxes.

Effectively dumping 90 day trials that have given thousands

of New Zealanders a foot in the door to employment.

A sharp cut to migrant work visas.

It’s these policies, particularly the final one, that could well lead to Peters’ prophecy.

Hundreds of businesses across our district rely heavily on employees here from overseas on work visas.

With unemployment locally so low, and growth so high, there just aren’t the people here to do the jobs that are available.

If those jobs go unfilled, that economic growth will stall.

It isn’t just employers in rural areas that will affected.

With less money in the district, our shops, our restaurants, and other small businesses will suffer.

Net annual migration into New Zealand stands at around 70,000.

Nearly half of that number is New Zealanders coming home, a major reversal from a decade ago when we lost tens of thousands of young Kiwis each year to Australia.

Labour wants to cut that net figure from 70,000 to 40,000.

10,000, a mathematical impossibility unless Peters wants to stop New Zealanders returning home.

I strongly oppose a major cut.

Issues in Auckland with housing shouldn’t be used to justify a policy that would substantially harm regional New Zealand.

Mid Canterbury’s success can’t be a casualty of the new Government’s focus on Auckland.

Over the next three years I’ll speak out strongly against large cuts to migration.

I’ll oppose tax increases that can’t be justified with the Government’s books strongly in surplus.

As an opposition, National will hold this Government to account, and fight hard against the dark days they predict are on the way.

New lead in McCann case Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are pursuing a credible new tip involving a dead paedophile and a mysterious “woman in purple”.

Detectives hunting for Madeleine McCann have travelled to Bulgaria to pursue a new lead, it has been revealed, said news.com.au Investigators are seeking a mysterious figure dubbed “the woman in purple” who may hold the key to the British girl’s disappearance a decade ago in Portugal.

The Sun newspaper has revealed that the woman’s husband, now dead, is a convicted paedophile.

The couple were working as domestic helpers near the Algarve holiday apartment where Madeleine vanished in 2007, aged three.

Locals reported them to police in the days following the disappearance but nothing was followed up until Scotland Yard officers re-examined statements recently.

Witnesses said the woman was seen close to the Ocean Club complex in Praia da Luz where the McCanns were staying.

She and her husband vanished after Madeleine went missing. Police have been unable to locate the wife despite extensive searches.

But a recent breakthrough has now taken police to Bulgaria in eastern Europe, it was reported overnight.

It comes after the revelation last month that police had identified a key “person of significance” in a shock new development.

Kate and Gerry McCann A source close to Scotland Yard’s search Operation Grange said the person is now a “critical line of inquiry” in the investigation, according to The Times.

Parents Kate and Gerry, both 49, were dining near their holiday apartment on the evening of May 3, 2007 when Madeleine was taken but her younger twin siblings were left.

When Kate returned to check on the kids at around 10pm that evening, she discovered that Maddie was not in her bed and was missing.

It remains one of the most high-profile missing person cases in modern history.

In 2010, Maddie’s distraught parents met with then-home secretary Theresa May to talk about the hunt for their daughter.

The following year, Scotland Yard launched its own review, named Operation Grange, into the case at the behest of the future PM. Two years later Scotland Yard said it had uncovered new leads while Portuguese police reopened their case.

In October 2015, Operation Grange was scaled down from 29 detectives to just four.

Maddie would have turned 14 on May 12, 2017.

Mysterious No sign Oswald linked death of to CIA, JFK files show 140 seals The discovery of more than 140 dead seals in Siberia’s Lake Baikal has puzzled scientists and led to fears of an epidemic among the rare species.

“All carcasses belonged to fullygrown and strong animals, 80 per cent of which are pregnant females,” officials in the nearby city of Irkutsk said.

Experts have been working for days to establish the cause of the mass deaths.

The Baikal seal is found only in Lake Baikal, the world’s oldest and deepest lake, and is one of the few species of seal found in fresh water.

Russian authorities estimate the Baikal seal population at around 128,000.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature includes the Baikal seal on its red list of endangered species, albeit in the category of “least concern”.

Hunting of the animal has been strictly regulated since 1980.

In the late 1980s, experts estimated that around 7500 of the seals died in an outbreak of distemper, a virus most commonly associated with pet dogs.

The mysterious plight is not thought to pose a risk to humans.

Newly released US government documents regarding John F. Kennedy’s assassination say allegations that Lee Harvey Oswald was connected to the CIA were “totally unfounded”.

A 1975 CIA memo says a thorough search of agency records in and outside the US was conducted to determine whether Oswald had been used by the agency or connected with it in “any conceivable way”.

The memo said the search came up empty.

The memo also said there was also no indication that any other US agency used Oswald as a source or for recruitment.

The National Archives released another 676 government documents related to the assassination on Friday, the third public release so far this year. Under law, all the documents were to be disclosed to the public last week.

Most of the latest release comprises 553 records from the CIA that previously were withheld in their entirety.

University of Virginia historian Larry Sabato complained that many of the documents in the latest release were still heavily redacted.

President Donald Trump has ordered the release of all records related to the assassination, and they are expected to be made public on a rolling basis during the next three to four weeks. He also directed agencies to take another look at redactions and withhold information only in the rarest of circumstances.

One record showed how US officials scrambled after the assassination to round up information about Oswald’s trip to Mexico City weeks earlier. Officials wondered

They both shared the same photo of them, lying on the floor surrounded by their three young children. Hilaria, 33, wrote in a caption: “Our Baldwinitos are getting a new team-mate this spring.

I’m gonna make them a special cake to tell them if it’s a boy or a girl...I’ll post it tomorrow midday. We are so excited!”

Baldwin, 59, simply wrote: “Here we go again...” The pair wedded in 2012, marking Baldwin’s second marriage since his split from Kim Basinger a decade previously. They share a daughter, Ireland.

Netflix cuts Spacey Netflix said that Kevin Spacey, 58, will no longer be a part of House of Cards and it’s cutting all other ties with the actor after a series of allegations of sexual harassment and assault.

Kevin Spacey “Netflix will not be involved with any further production of House of Cards that includes Kevin Spacey,” the company said. Netflix said it will work with the show’s production company MRC to evaluate whether it will continue without him. Netflix says it also will refuse to release the film Gore, in which Spacey stars as the writer Gore Vidal and also acted as producer.

A CIA message sent on November 24, 1963 – two days after Kennedy was killed – said an “important question” that remained unsolved was whether Oswald had been planning to travel right away or return to the US and leave later.

Another record dated April 11, 1964, recounted a visit to the CIA by three staff members of the Warren Commission, which was set up to investigate the assassination.

The memo said the staff members indicated that Thomas Mann, former ambassador to Mexico and then-assistant secretary for inter-American affairs, “still has the ‘feeling in his guts’ that (Cuban leader Fidel) Castro hired Oswald to kill Kennedy. They said, however, that the commission has not been able to get any proof of that.”

Lou Diamond Phillips

Arrested for DWI US actor Lou Diamond Phillips faces a driving while intoxicated charge in Texas for an incident that happened just hours before he appeared at a speaking engagement in Corpus Christi. Police in Portland, Texas, arrested Phillips in the early hours of Friday. Jail records show the La Bamba star was freed after posting bail, which had been set at $US2500. An officer was conducting an unrelated traffic stop when the 55-yearold Phillips drove up and asked for directions. The officer suspected Phillips had been drinking, Police Chief Mark Cory says. Serves 4 Creme brulee is quite straight forward to make. You can use mugs instead of ramekins. Vanilla is available in pods, as extract or as essence – use which ever you like.

500ml cream (2C) 1 vanilla bean, split, seeds scraped (or 1 tsp vanilla essence) 6 egg yolks 1/4 C caster sugar 120g demerara sugar ■ Preheat oven to 120°C. ■ Place the cream, vanilla bean and seeds in a saucepan over medium heat and bring to scalding point, then remove from heat.

■ Remove vanilla bean and discard.

■ Whisk together egg yolks and caster sugar in a bowl for 2-3 minutes or until pale.

■ Pour hot cream over egg yolk mixture, continuing to whisk until well combined. Strain mixture into a jug, evenly divide between 4x200ml ramekins.

■ Carefully place ramekins in a deep roasting pan lined with a folded tea towel. Pour boiling water into pan to come halfway up the sides of ramekins. Cover pan loosely with foil.

■ Bake in the oven for 40 minutes or until the custard has just set.

■ Remove ramekins from the water bath, and set aside to cool.

■ Sprinkle demerara sugar evenly over the surface of the baked custards.

■ Run a kitchen blowtorch over the custards, or place under a preheated grill until the sugar bubbles and caramelises.

Eilat soaks up winter sun

“I

have never seen snow in my life, and if it snows here, I will leave,” laughs our guide Naftaly Gal Or, who is skilfully driving an open-backed jeep through the dusty and mesmerising mountains surrounding the southern Israeli city of Eilat.

Nestled on the coast of the Red Sea with its crystal clear waters – home to an abundance of colourful marine life such as lionfish, parrotfish, octopus and seahorses – Eilat has plenty of potential for adventure.

Clinging to Naftaly’s bouncing jeep as he deliberately moves it up the inclines of the path ahead, singing the vaguely recognisable tune of “shake to the left, shake to the right”, it is difficult to believe he is approaching 70.

The back wheels are kicking up dust from the rocky track as we meander our way through the harsh and barren landscape of Solomon Valley – close to the Egyptian border – headed for our second viewpoint of the twohour excursion.

With the air invitingly warm as the sun is engulfed behind the

jagged edges of the mountains, casting a soft light amongst the crevasses and highlighting the many differing hues of red, browns and grey, it is hard not to be captivated by the immense natural beauty of the area.

Founded in 1950, the resort and port town neighbours the Jordanian city of Aqaba, which, from the height of the mountains, becomes visible as a mass of street lights as darkness descends.

But spectacular views are not all Eilat has to offer.

1. TAKE A DIP WITH DOLPHINS One of the resort’s more unique attractions is Dolphin Reef (dolphinreef.co.il), home to four bottlenose porpoises called Neo, Nana, Luna and Nikita, who live in their natural environment – a large netted part of the sea.

Instead of forcing the marine mammals to perform tricks, at Dolphin Reef the animals are treated with respect and sensitivity.

There’s the option to dive or snorkel with the sea mammals for 30-minute sessions, and once

immersed in their underwater habitat I’m overcome with a sense of excitement and joy that I know I haven’t felt since the Christmas Eves of my childhood.

2. MAKE FEATHERED FRIENDS In autumn and spring the skies above Eilat teem with birdlife as half a billion flamingoes, raptors, kingfishers and other winged creatures migrate across continents. In a typical March, more than 130 species can be seen in a day.

Providing a safe haven, a team of researchers and conservationists maintain an oasis of freshwater and saltwater ponds and lakes at the International Birding and Research Centre in Eilat, close to the Jordanian border.

You can take a pre-booked tour of the sanctuary.

The centre humanely catches and rings birds that pass through the area, to collect data for their work. Best of all, visitors can actively participate in the work. I gently undo a cloth bag to reveal a reed warbler ready for release, and am given careful instructions on how to hold its delicate

body. Watching the warbler fly away, I feel awed by the tiny creature which journeys thousands of kilometres every year.

3. EXPLORE THE JUNGLE “There are only two seasons here – summer and hot summer,” Yoram, one of the founders of the Eilat Botanical Garden, tells me as he guides us through the collection of plants and trees, which include the baobab, almond tree, the holy fig, and details how they keep them all alive.

The pinnacle of the gardens is a rainforest, where a misting water feature activates every six minutes and provides the most refreshing reprieve from the blazing Israeli sun.

4. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN HISTORY A mere 30km from Eilat is Timna Park, a 60,000sq km valley where copper ores were mined from as early as the 5th millennium BC. There are many mine shafts to climb into and discover, and geological formations such as the mushroom, a natural stone formation which resembles the

fungus, and the incredible King Solomon’s Pillars – imposing red sandstone cliffs that look like they ripple through the landscape.

The ruins of a temple dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Hathor can be seen at the base of Solomon’s Pillars; the outline of the walls and several basins are still visible.

5. SINK TO THE LOWEST POINT ON EARTH At 431m below sea level, the ever-shrinking Dead Sea is the lowest dry-land point on Earth.

It’s a two and a half hour drive away, but worth the effort to visit.

It is free to enter the public beach and there are full changing facilities available, but make sure you take waterproof reef shoes as the salt crystals that have formed on the water’s edge can be a little rough under foot.

With normal swimming strokes rendered impossible by the volume of salt, after spending just 15 minutes floating in the water your skin will feel incredible.

Black Caps’ depth on show

By Andrew Alderson The performances of Colin Munro and Ish Sodhi in New Zealand’s 40-run Twenty20 victory over India in Rajkot showed the value in persevering with them at international level.

Both have been on the periphery of the Black Caps for years.

Their contributions to level the current series demonstrated an ability to deliver match-winning performances.

New Zealand needs to spread the responsibility of building victories in all formats beyond the usual suspects of Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Ross Taylor, Martin Guptill and Tim Southee.

An example came in the recent one-day international series.

Test opener Tom Latham proved a revelation dropping to No.5 and taking the wicketkeeping gloves.

Munro and Sodhi continued the trend in the shortest format, choosing a savvy time and place to deliver skite reels ahead of next year’s Indian Premier League auction.

Munro maintained his ascendancy as a limited overs opener with 109 not out from 58 balls.

His clean striking anchored

New Zealand’s 196 for two after choosing to bat. He combined with Martin Guptill (45 runs off 41 balls) in a 105-run opening stand, and joined Brendon McCullum and West Indians Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis among those to score two centuries in T20 internationals.

The 30-year-old dominated on a surface which offered bowlers minimal assistance. His chances of missing the sweet spot were negligible when he hit through the line, but he also showed finesse glancing debutant Mohammed Siraj through his legs in the 15th over and paddling him fine in the 17th.

The question now is: can he do it when the ball nibbles about more at home?

“It’s a mind shift thing trying not to expect too much of myself, and not getting too high or low,” Munro said.

“The biggest part of being successful at this level is the mental side. I’ve put too much pressure on myself in the past regarding ‘what can I do to make the team?’

“Now it’s more about ‘what can I do to win or contribute to the game, even if it’s 20 off 10?”

Munro endured a couple of dicey moments.

Ish Sodhi He was dropped by Yuzvendra Chahal on 79 off Kumar in the 16th and avoided a run out calamity at the end of the 12th when Rohit Sharma threw wildly at the striker’s end. When he took the ball and broke the third wicket stand of 54 off 40 balls between Kohli (65 off 42 balls) and Shreyas Iyer (23 off 21), he could safely assume it was his day.

Iyer swung a knuckleball delivery high and, as it began a freefall of Felix Baumgartner proportions, Munro circled below. The all-rounder’s effort was living proof cricket hath no determination like a player chasing their own caught-and-bowled.

Sodhi produced breath-taking leg spin at times, extracting

turn where others couldn’t. The highlight was a signature googly which sawed through Handik Pandya and left the hosts flailing at 67 for four in the 10th over. “[Variations] are something I’ve been working on a lot and then it’s about figuring out the best time to bowl them,” Sodhi said. “These days in T20, variety is definitely something you want to keep adding to your game.”

The 25-year-old finished with one for 25 from four overs, backing up his figures of two for 25 from the first match where he received less support from the other end.

In Delhi, each pace bowler went at 11 or more runs per over.

In Rajkot, no one other than the 10 runs off one Colin de Grandhomme over, conceded more than 8.50.

The two developing internationals shone, but Boult’s dismissal of both openers in the second over was pivotal in ensuring India always struggled. He removed Shikhar Dhawan’s middle stump, and lured Sharma into chasing a ball angled across him which edged into Glenn Phillips’ gloves.

The left-armer finished with four wickets for 34.

The New Zealand Breakers’ winning streak has stretched to six after one of the most remarkable finishes in ANBL history.

With the scores tied and just 1.9 seconds remaining, a DJ Newbill inbound found Edgar Sosa in the left corner. He spun, rose, and fired – knocking down a turnaround three which gave the Breakers a 73-70 victory.

Sosa soaked in the adulation as the Breakers bench spilled onto the court to mob their game-winning team-mate.

There was just one problem.

There was still time on the clock, and Cam Gliddon threw up a full-court prayer, which remarkably went in, sending the home crowd into raptures.

However, there was also a problem for Cairns. After Sosa’s heroics, there was only 0.1 second left on the clock, and it is physically impossible to put up a “catch and shoot” shot attempt in less than 0.3 seconds.

As a result, Gliddon’s shot was rightly waved off, but not after mass confusion, and mass celebrations from both sets of players.

When the chaos died down, it was confirmed – the Breakers had a victory; their first over Cairns in six games.

It is a victory that keeps them at the top of the table with a 6-1 record – remaining alongside Perth as the only teams to have lost just one game. It continues a trend of the past few years – for all the talk about parity in the league, the season consistently ends with either the Breakers or Wildcats raising the trophy.

It’s too early to make such claims yet, especially after a game that could have easily gone either way.

Both teams came out firing, with the Taipans on fire from deep to start, including a (legal) buzzerbeater from over half-court by Jarrad Weeks, which gave the hosts a 25-21 lead after the first quarter.

The Breakers stayed in the contest thanks to a peculiar mix of offensive rebounding and threepoint shooting. Kirk Penney hit all four of his three-point attempts.

The two teams combined for just 53 second-half points before the final minute, which well made up for the dreary moments proceeding it.

A Newbill layup put the Breakers up by one with 16 seconds remaining, but Scoochie Smith responded for the Taipans. That left Sosa with just enough time to seal a stunning victory.

Southern celebrates great night, great season

After a fantastic night at the Mid Canterbury Rugby awards last Friday night, many associated at the Southern came away with big smiles on their faces after picking up plenty of awards.

Not only did they dominate the senior awards, they took out the club of the year award, as well as club captain Eric Duff taking out the Heartland player of the year.

“It has been a bloody good year and was great for everyone in-

volved,” club legend Jon Dampney said.

“There has been a lot of hard work put in by people and a lot that goes on behind the scenes that makes the club run.”

The remaining centurion caps were handed out on the evening,

including to Dampney, with only Grant Perry yet to be presented with his owing to him being in the United Kingdom supporting son Tim with his All Blacks endeavours.

“To get that was a bit of an honor,” he said.

Kiwis eye Tongan challenge

By DaviD Skipwith Kiwis captain Adam Blair is happy with his side’s progress after they annihilated Scotland 74-6, but knows the first real test of their mettle will come against Tonga.

New Zealand are brimming with confidence are running in 14 tries in Christchurch, despite some of their key players being rested, while Tonga continued their momentum after outclassing Samoa 32-18 in Hamilton.

The two sides will face off at Waikato Stadium next Saturday to decide who finishes top of Pool B to book a quarterfinal against the third-placed side from Pool A, while the runner-up will likely meet Pool D front-runners Fiji.

Both winless from two starts, Scotland and Samoa now face a do-or-die clash in Cairns to determine the third team to advance – to an expected and unenviable match-up against Pool A leaders Australia.

New Zealand’s next assignment brings Blair and his team-mates face to face with the four players that turned their back on the Kiwis to

turn out for Tonga – Jason Taumalolo, Manu Ma’u, Sio Siua Taukeiaho and David Fusitu’a.

Speaking to Newstalk ZB just days after the quartets defection was confirmed, Blair was scathing of the poor timing of the group’s decision and slammed them for disrespecting the Kiwis jersey.

Whilst his attitude has since mellowed, Blair was succinct in confirming Tonga would present a much stiffer challenge than their first two highscoring wins over Samoa and Scotland.

The Kiwis improved their ball control and dominated Scotland in all areas but the 31-year-old new Warriors signing says the Kiwis need to maintain their focus and accuracy in the weeks ahead.

“Without a doubt,” said Blair during Saturday night’s postmatch press conference.

“We wanted to make sure we were better with the ball.

“Again, it’s making the smart decisions at tough times and I thought we did that pretty well.

Tonga praise halves They were seen as a potential weak link but coach Kristian Woolf is delighted with Tonga’s young halves as his team eyes an upset victory over Rugby League World Cup heavyweights New Zealand.

Ata Hingano, 20, and Tuimoala Lolohea, 22, steered unbeaten Tonga around with poise, helping their side score five tries to three in a 32-18 win over Pacific rivals Samoa in Hamilton on Saturday.

Tonga’s forward stocks, including Jason Taumalolo, Andrew Fifita, Sio Siua Taukeiaho and captain Sika Manu, are the envy of many in the rugby league world, and the big boys certainly paved the way, earning almost 600 more running metres than Samoa.

Ready for trash talk Kangaroos winger Josh Mansour expects plenty of banter to come his way should he get selected to face Lebanon next Saturday.

Mansour capped off a memorable week on Friday when he returned to the Australia side in their win over France, almost one year after tearing his ACL during the 2016 Four Nations. BB’s baptism of fire

By Liam Napier As far as first captaincy experiences go, this proved a difficult one.

Beauden Barrett, in his first match of any kind as skipper, left the Twickenham field to get stitches in his thumb with the All Blacks down 10-5.

By the time he returned, the Barbarians had scored another try, only increasing pressure on his shoulders.

Talk about a tough introduction to Kieran Read’s job.

With an inexperienced team feeling the heat and clearly struggling to settle, Barrett had to help them regain composure to right the ship after a seriously scrappy first half.

“It was doing the simple things well and being patient and building pressure.

“Once we got our kicking game going we put the pressure back onto them,” Barrett said after the 31-22 win.

“I thought we adapted and adjusted well and that’s something we spoke about doing going into this game.

“It was a great learning experience for me. Going into the week I was quite nervous. I just tried to be as present as possible and take it one day at a time.”

Standing at the head of the haka was a unique experience.

“Quite daunting thinking about it but once I was out there I really enjoyed it. Going forward I think I’ll be able to assist Kieran much better than I have been.”

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen felt his young side got caught up in the festival nature of this game but he believed that they would learn and improve for the midweek match in Lyon where many of this squad will be involved again.

In an open, free-flowing spectacle, Hansen quipped Welsh referee Nigel Owens, who could be heard regularly bantering with the players, also didn’t have his best match.

The All Blacks appeared to benefit from Owens on one occasion in the second half where he did not use the TMO to check whether replacement Baabaas hooker Akker van der Merwe had grounded the ball.

“He’s like the rest of us you fall into the trap of getting caught up in it,” Hansen said of Owens.

“He did a good job but there’s no doubt in my mind he wasn’t as focused as he would have been in a test match. The crowd that came here want to see the rugby that was played hence why they clapped and then booed when the try under the post wasn’t awarded.

“It’s difficult for a player to get their head around it and it’s also difficult for the ref.”

Waisake Naholo was the best on the park for the All Blacks, setting up two tries with offloads to probably lock in his spot on the right wing next week in Paris.

Hansen singled out Luke Romano, Nathan Harris, Ofa Tu’ungafasi and Tawera Kerr-Barlow for praise and was pleased to

give his three rookies – Tim Perry, Matt Duffie and Asafo Aumua – a taste of this arena.

“It’s really not how much game-time they get that first one it’s about how they fit into the whole week and the experience you get.

“It’s not normally our modus operandi to throw them in the first week so to do what they did I thought they coped well all three of them.”

Crusaders playmaker Richie Mo’unga shone for the Baabaas, as did South African flanker Kwagga Smith. And Steven Luatua, with two intercepts, proved just what a loss to New Zealand rugby he is.

“The guys that were out there from New Zealand we were well aware of.

“The likes of Steven Luatua,

well, everyone got a taste of why we didn’t want him to go.”

As for the future of the Baabaas, a discussion point this week, Hansen, who has coached them twice, lamented the absence of UK players.

“There’s definitely a place for it.

“There’s a long history of Barbarians rugby that has inspired people.

“The hardest problem is getting it to fit into the calendar. We had a national anthem out there and there wasn’t one person from England in the team.

“It would’ve been nice if we could get some players from this part of the world but because the calendar doesn’t allow it doesn’t happen.

“That’s the big bugbear I have with it. You want it to be a truly global thing.”

Baabaas ‘a winning formula’ Robbie Deans surveyed 80 minutes of entertainment at Twickenham and said it was Exhibit A in the case for keeping the Barbarians.

Coach of the invitation club side for a second year, Deans’ men pushed the world champion All Blacks close before succumbing 31-22 at Twickenham yesterday. His Kiwi-dominated outfit stuck to the traditional Baabaas mantra while also providing a stuttering New Zealand with a keen examination to kick-start their European tour.

Pre-match criticism surrounded the complete dearth of northern hemisphere players in Deans’ match-day 23.

It also prompted suggestions there was no place in the packed professional calendar for a team regarded as a sideshow.

The former Crusaders and Wallabies coach was having none of it.

“It’s thriving, it’s alive and well,” he said of the Barbarians. “This is the way rugby should be, regardless of what comp you’re in.

“It’s a players’ game and I think sometimes coaches forget that and we produce stress.”

Deans believes it is no coincidence many of his 2016 Barbarians players went on to enjoy success this year.

He thinks New Zealand will benefit from having such a large number of fringe test players involved in the week and reckons the likes of England have missed a chance to develop and learn in a team built on cross-pollination.

For example, Crusaders coach Scott Robertson was Deans’ assistant this week and proved “irrepressible” with his ideas and methods.

“But it’s challenging getting players from clubs,” Deans said.

“I think if coaches can just look a little bit beyond, they’ll actually be the benefactors of that over time.”

Deans singled out a South African, flanker and man of the match Kwagga Smith, as his standout performer. The former Blitzboks sevens star is making a case for higher honours with his sheer speed, something that caught the All Blacks out more than once.

Barbarians the real winners from Twickenham spectacular

T

he Barbarians showed in their performance against the All Blacks in front of 65,000 at Twickenham that this is a worthwhile fixture in the rugby calendar because they played their part in an entertaining and valuable game for Steve Hansen’s men.

This match celebrated the history of the Barbarians club and their previous matches against the men in black and once again it was a great spectacle.

Near the start of the year there were some murmerings from this part of the world that the fixture should be changed to a test against England. New Zealand Rugby and the All Blacks stayed firm and there’s a good reason for that, because a lot of Kiwis have played for the Baabaas and we owe a debt of gratitude to the club.

I thought they gave everything they had. They played with a smile on their faces and tried things, as is the Baabaas way.

They didn’t go for goal, prefer-

ring to run just about everything and that put a significant amount of pressure on the All Blacks. It also meant they had to dig very deep and be disciplined.

There’s always a stage in a match where the Baabaas are going to run out of puff and that’s part and parcel of the week and the entertainment they enjoy off the field as well as on it.

The rain didn’t help the Barbarians. They stayed true to their values and tried to continue to move the ball and to be ambitous.

Once the rain came the All Blacks tightened up and become far more direct. They were far more disciplined with the ball and the Barbarians couldn’t adjust. The All Blacks’ changed game plan showed they had some leadership.

Any player who has come up against Baabaas will say they are difficult because they don’t play a normal style. You wait for them to kick to exit their red zone and they don’t and it can be frustrating because it seems they play with no real pattern.

The All Blacks might be a bit perturbed by how long it took them to get control of the match but there was always going to be rust given the changes and inexperience of many of their players.

The big winners were the Baabaas and many of the 10 New Zealanders in the starting line-up, some of whom are on the fringe of the national team. The All Black selectors might look at some of them and think ‘wow, maybe these guys can actually step up to international rugby’.

Reid, Wood fit to play Skipper Winston Reid and striker Chris Wood have shaken off late injuries and will lead an experienced All Whites squad in their World Cup intercontinental playoff against Peru this week.

Defender Tommy Smith has also overcome injury and is named in coach Anthony Hudson’s 23-strong squad alongside Reid, Wood and Ryan Thomas, who plays for PEC Zwolle in the Dutch Eredivisie.

New Zealand will host world No.10 Peru in Wellington on Saturday before travelling to Lima four days later in a bid to secure a place in next year’s World Cup in Russia.

Both Reid and Wood had missed English Premier League matches recently, centre back Reid standing down for West Ham with a calf strain while a dodgy hamstring had kept Wood sidelined for Burnley.

Reid lasted the full 90 minutes for West Ham in their 4-1 loss to Liverpool yesterday, while Wood played 65 minutes in Burnley’s 1-0 win over Southampton.

Hudson says he has named a squad with plenty of quality and experience which will be ready for the challenge of the fifthranked South Americans.

“The goal for our squad is simple – we need to deliver the best performance of our campaign and if we do that then we have a good chance of qualifying for the World Cup,” he said.

Umpires have success at tournament time Five young hockey umpires from Mid Canterbury have whistled their way to success at recent tournaments.

All five were involved in top 10 games at their respective tournaments with three going on to umpire gold medal matches and one a bronze medal match.

All five umpires are busy throughout the Mid Canterbury Hockey club season umpiring in various grades from primary through to senior levels and four of them play during the season also.

Rachel Law was the first umpire away to tournament in Timaru where the Under 15 Girls Championship was held.

After being involved in nine games, Law was appointed to the Bronze Medal match between Auckland B and South Canterbury.

This match had plenty of drama, ending in a 1-1 draw at the end of regular time, to then go to two extra periods of golden goal drop-off before being settled by penalty shoot outs.

His reward for an excellent showing in those games was his appointment to the Hatch Cup final, a prestigious hockey occasion dating back to 1920 when

the cup was first awarded.

In this game, Gray umpired a match that saw North Harbour crowned national champions with a 3-0 win over Bay of Plenty.

“It was a good game to umpire”, said Gray.

“The game was quite fast and the Harbour boys played a good brand of hockey against a Bay team that struggled to match them in the end.

“That meant the Bay team became a bit frustrated and some cards were handed out in order to keep the game tidy.”

Gray said the umpires became a close team over the week and supported each other well.

Mid Canterbury Hockey President James Tavendale said he was delighted with the performances and recognition of the umpires at the recent tournaments.

“It is great to see Mid Canterbury umpires appearing on the regional and national stage,” he said.

“This is a credit to the umpire development programme that has been operating for a number of years.”

Victory books Mile berth Shadows Cast will head to Riccarton at the top of his game following a dominant performance to beat the open class sprinters on his home track on Saturday.

The Awapuni five-year-old booked his trip to the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup carnival with victory in the Courtesy Ford Redcraze Bowl (1400m).

“He’ll go down for the Coupland’s Bakeries Mile after that,” said trainer Mark Oulaghan, who has previously enjoyed Group success on the flat and prestige jumping wins on the South Island’s premier course.

Shadows Cast is now a $14 chance for the Gr.2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (1600m) to be run on November 15.

The Per Incanto gelding, who is raced by Ron Cunningham, was making the second appearance of his current campaign on Saturday after finishing a first-up fifth at Hawke’s Bay in the Gr.3 Spring Sprint.

As opposed to his last preparation, Shadows Cast only made one appearance at that carnival.

“We took him to Hastings last year, but after three runs there he came to the end of it,” Oulaghan said.

“We’ve kept him a little bit

fresher this time and he’s fit and healthy.”

Shadows Cast travelled comfortably near the pace and rider Alysha Collett brought him with a well-timed run in the straight

Melbourne success a pinnacle achievement Despite enjoying some truly remarkable achievements over many years, thoroughbred identity Christopher Grace has no hesitation in labelling the results from Flemington on Saturday as the pinnacle of his racing and breeding career to date.

the John Sargent trained Luvaluva who had earlier won the Gr. 2 Wakeful Stakes.

Although they weren’t at Flemington to witness their success in person, Grace advised the pair were glued to their television throughout the day and celebrated with gusto with a small group of friends on Saturday evening.

“We had thought about going over, but I was busy at work hurs-

day and Friday, so we couldn’t make it,” Grace explained. “While it would have been nice to have been there the television coverage is marvellous and we probably saw as much or more than we would have being on course.

“Chris is also remarkable in the amount of information he provides so we had up to the minute snippets on how Shillelagh was and the general thrust was that

he was confident of a top performance.

“We just kept our fingers crossed but when she won it was such a marvellous feeling and one that I think rates as the best we have ever had in racing.”

Shillelagh is the daughter of Flying Spur mare Trocair who has proven to be a wonderful producer for the Grace’s after a relatively modest career on the track.

McGrath’s 500th win What better way to bring up your 500th training success than with a quinella, and drive the winner yourself?

Nigel McGrath achieved that milestone in the sulky of Maverick, who held out more favoured stablemate My Wee Man by a nose in the Riverton Trotting Cup at Ascot Park yesterday.

Less than 18 years since McGrath’s first two wins, Lasting Vance and Dresden’s Baby at Westport on Boxing Day 1999, his runners have accumulated stake earnings well in excess of $5 million.

With such success, he found the task of isolating the absolute highlight too difficult.

“There have been plenty of special moments,” said McGrath.

“Good owners and good horses.”

Maverick’s win from 35 metres behind was McGrath’s 476th win as a driver, achieved by holding out premiership leader Blair Orange aboard My Wee Man. Back early, the pair improved to be handy at the bell with Maverick parked and the stablemate in the one-one. Soon after straightening, they had the finish to themselves.

“He made up his handicap pretty quickly,” said McGrath.

“That helped, but I thought he’d been beaten,” McGrath said of the former entire that was gelded at the end of his previous campaign.

McGrath doesn’t often jump in the cart, but he has a soft spot for the six-year-old pacer.

“I don’t drive many but usually Maverick; he’s nice and quiet.”

It was the eighth win for the son of Bettor’s Delight and took his stake earnings past $100,000.

Franco Santino won the $12,000 Nugget Final in the hands of his trainer Nathan Williamson, who prepares the three-year-old for one of his major clients in Neville Cleaver.

Vital win for Whincup

By Dale BuDge Six-time series champ Jamie Whincup has won the Sunday race at the ITM Auckland SuperSprint to extend his championship lead over Kiwi Scott McLaughlin to 30 points.

The Shell V-Power Ford driver finished second but had no challenge for Whincup yesterday, who led from start to finish to take a big step towards a seventh championship.

Cam Waters finished third, recovering from a first lap mistake that saw both of his Prodrive Racing Ford team-mates Chaz Mostert and Mark Winterbottom spin and fall to the back of the pack.

Veteran Craig Lowndes was fourth while Kiwi Fabian Coulthard finished fifth a day after his Saturday race finished upside down and his crew spent the night repairing his car.

Saturday race winner Shane van Gisbergen ruined his race when he drilled Tim Slade in the entry to the pits – the Kiwi carrying too much speed to pull up in time.

He sat in the lane for a number of laps but got out to register as a finisher and pick

Sport Happy debut for Hodge Reece Hodge says his experience playing at five-eighth will improve his game wherever he ends up next in the Wallabies backline. Hodge made his starting test debut at No.10 in Australia’s 63-30 thrashing of Japan in Yokohama after being called in for an ill Bernard Foley. The 23-year-old, who has spent all of the Wallabies tests this year on the wing, and last year in the centres, held his own and provided some key plays and passes that helped set up the nine-try romp.

Hodge expected that Foley would recover from his stomach bug to face Wales in Cardiff next weekend.

Russian star in Classic Russian tennis prodigy and world No.35 Andrey Rublev has signed up for next year’s ASB Classic in Auckland. The 20-year-old just completed his first full season on the ATP tour, rising 120 places in the rankings and winning a maiden title in July. He was also a US Open quarter-finalist. “I first watched Rublev play at the US Open two years ago as an 18-year-old, and have been trying to secure his signature ever since - he is a special player,” ASB Classic director Karl Budge said.

Fairton wipes the court

It was a clean sweep for Fairton in the senior interclub tennis competition on Saturday, while Hampstead and Methven also picked up good wins.

Fairton proved nearly untouchable in their games, taking the victory six games to nil, winning both doubles matches in convincing fashion.

Rhys Cromie and Tyler Leonard were too strong for Jason Feutz and Luke Glendining, winning 6-2, 6-1. Philip Crozier and Erin Connelly-Whyte also dominated their doubles

match, winning 6-1, and 6-2.

In the singles it was all one way traffic except the clash between Leonard and Glendining, which went to a tiebreaker.

Leonard won the first set 6-3, before Glendining won a narrow second set 7-5, with Leonard getting the business done 10-5 in the tiebreaker.

In the closest clash of the day, Hampstead were able to sneak past Tinwald with a 4-2 victory.

Things could have very easily gone either way however, with Hampstead winning via a default in one singles game.

with Mary-Anne Thyne and Jade Brosnahan comfortably winning 6-2, 6-0.

For the other pair, it was a much harder challenge, with Tinwald’s Peter Leonard and Eddie Dargue forcing Aidan Mitchell and Pete Kirwan right to a tiebreak, which Mitchell and Kirwan won 10-5.

Leonard and Henrick Tawatao looked to have gotten Tinwald back in to the competition with their singles victories, but Brosnahan taking out a tiebreaker victory for Hampstead put them into the magic four-game buffer, with Kirwan having already

won through the default.

In the last set of games, Methven proved too strong for Allenton, with only Andre van Rooyen salvaging one game, with Methven winning 5-1.

Methven dominated the doubles, and it was all one way traffic in singles apart from the clash between van Rooyen and Sam Bubb.

After losing the first set 5-7, Bubb bounced back in the second, winning 6-3, sending the match to a tiebreaker.

The experience of van Rooyen shone through however, winning the tiebreaker 10-6.

Grizzlies’ bench roars Memphis have used a balanced offence and strong play from their reserves to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 113-104 in the NBA. The Grizzlies had seven players score in double figures, including all four of their bench players. Mike Conley returned to the lineup after sitting out the last game with a sore Achilles go lead Memphis with 22 points. The Memphis backups outscored the Los Angeles reserves 55-22. Tyreke Evans led the Memphis reserves with 20 points.
