Maori trust in cultural row over bank note A Maori trust claims the Reserve Bank has used one of its cultural patterns on the new $10 bank note without seeking advice or permission. The tukutuku panel design, visible on the redesigned note, was taken from the Te Hau ki Turanga wharenui at Te Papa Museum in Wellington. The Te Hau ki Turanga Trust, custodian of the meeting house, has now sought legal advice over the issue. The bank, however, says it has used the pattern for more than 20 years without any dispute. The wharenui is owned by the Rongowhakaata Settlement Trust, which was confirmed in the Rongowhakaata Claims Settlement Act 2012.

World Cup anthem revealed New Zealand’s Rugby World Cup anthem has been revealed – a stirring rendition of an Ed Sheeran song by Kiwi opera trio Sol3 Mio. The hit singers have covered Sheeran’s song, I See Fire, originally recorded for Peter Jackson’s 2013 movie, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The video for the song, which includes a Maori haka, is streaming exclusively on The Express.

The Express reported that it’s the official anthem for the All Blacks as they seek to retain the Rugby World Cup, which kicks off in the UK in two weeks. The song is also set to appear on the group’s new album On Another Note.

Cranston: Fame like pregnancy Being famous is like being pregnant, according to star Bryan Cranston. The Breaking Bad star insists fame definitely has a down side in that complete strangers feel like they know you. “Being (famous) is almost like being a pregnant woman. People think they can just put their hand on your belly and tell you, ‘Oh, you’re going to have a boy!’

It’s like having a complete stranger fondling you,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “And they have this sensibility where they feel comfortable coming up to you and saying, ‘You know that thing you did?

I didn’t like that movie’.”

But the Golden Globe winner said he would rather people have a bad reaction to his roles than no reaction at all. “I’d rather have people fiercely angry with me so long as they’re moved to some emotion. Even if the emotion was off-target, even if I was trying to move the audience one place and they go another. You missed – but at least they felt something.”

Black Sabbath coming Down Under on farewell tour After five decades of making music, Black Sabbath will say a final farewell next year with a world tour that will take in Australia and New Zealand. The heavy metal band starring Ozzy Osbourne has announced dates for its The End tour, which kicks off on January 20 in Omaha, Nebraska. Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler will visit 17 North American cities before heading to Australia and New Zealand for seven shows. More concerts will be announced next month.

Pot message a downer Bosses of an anti-smoking organisation have complained to MTV network executives about Miley Cyrus’ constant marijuana references during this week’s Video Music Awards. The pot-loving pop star made lots of jokes about her love of weed, sang about it and even appeared in a skit about it. To hammer home her proweed message after the show, Cyrus hit the backstage press room with a lit joint and handed it round to event photographers.

Officials at The Truth Initiative weren’t impressed given they spent big dollars to sponsor ads about the dangers of tobacco use during the MTV awards telecast. The group’s spokesman Eric Asche says, “It is entirely understandable for viewers to be confused, after hearing so much about marijuana during the VMA broadcast, to see a powerful advertisement about the dangers of tobacco.”

Building boom continues

Over the past five years more than 1000 new homes have been built in the Ashburton district, 242 of those in the past year.

And those new homes have been part of a building boom that in the year to June 30 pumped more than $165 million into the Ashburton District’s economy as consent issues came close to hitting an all-time high.

During the year to June 30 1193 consents were issued for a range of building work, just five below the district record set in 2012.

Not only were consent numbers at a high, many of those consents were for large and quite complex builds, said Ashburton District Council build-

ing services manager Michael Wong.

In recent years the council had been working closely with the building industry, he said, to

ensure that building practitioners were well informed on the amount of detail required when consents were lodged.

This saved time on both the consenting process and later, with on-site inspections.

“We’ve also been providing more advice on site as we work with the industry to support higher success rates for building inspections,” Mr Wong said.

During the year, the council carried out 5051 inspections on building work and because most building companies ensured they were up to speed with council requirements, the

failure rate on any inspection was low, just 8.8 per cent, he said.

“We’re delighted with that result and we’re now having other councils contacting our team to learn more about how we’re working with the building industry.”

The first two months of this financial year 193 consents have been issued, for the first two months of the last financial year consent issues totalled 219. The number of new dwelling consents dropped markedly in August this year, to 20 from 31 last year.

In brief Daffodil Day funds More than $15,500 was raised for the Cancer Society at this year’s ANZ Daffodil Day Quiz and auction night. The event took place late last month, and this year marked the 25th year ANZ have supported Daffodil Day and in turn, the Cancer Society. Bridget Johnson of ANZ Ashburton said the generosity from the community was overwhelming. All funds raised go to the local Cancer Society to help support people living with cancer in Mid Canterbury.

Missing man found A former All Black missing in London has been found – and was rushed to hospital after a possible hit and run. His daughter-in-law told Newstalk ZB that Terry Lineen was found in Twickenham after a member of public reported seeing a distressed man they thought had been in an accident.

The 79-year-old was bleeding from his arm. Mr Lineen went missing from Heathrow Airport overnight Thursday, after missing a connecting flight to meet his son Sean in Edinburgh. His son is being taken to hospital by London police to be with his dad.

Hanging out under the Rakaia River bridge Motorists using the Rakaia Bridge this week may have wondered why road cones were out and why they needed to slow to crawling pace.

Those precautions were for

work that was taking place below the bridge surface, with crews from NZ Transport Agency’s contractors carrying out repairs on the bridge piers.

Because of the difficulty of

using scaffolding in a stony riverbed, the repair team used ropes to traverse the bridge’s 1.7 kilometre length.

While crews were working traffic go slow signs were

in place over sections of the bridge to minimise vibrations for workers.

Work on the 1.7 kilometre long bridge has now been completed.

Exactly five years on from the Fox Glacier skydive plane crash that killed nine people, an addendum to the report into the tragedy is still to be released. A draft addendum on the September 4, 2010 crash was released to the family members in May, and they were given a month to respond. Deputy chief investigator of accidents Peter Williams said the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) would reconsider the draft later this month, but it would not be ready before October and could take longer. Four overseas backpackers and five Skydive NZ staff members were killed in the crash.

Questions still unanswered

When you hand an organisation more than quarter of a million dollars you have every right to ask how that money is being spent, says Ashburton District councillor Stuart Wilson.

He’s challenged Grow Mid Canterbury on several occasions to come clean on how it spends $240,000 the council grants it each year, but says he’s still waiting for a satisfactory answer.

At Thursday’s council finance and business support committee meeting a document detailing the structure of Grow Mid Canterbury and its relationship with several other companies was tabled.

While that showed the organisation’s assets and liabili-

ties and financial situation at June 30, 2014, it didn’t provide the answers he was looking for, Mr Wilson said.

“As a council we should be very concerned about the balance sheet and what the situation is in 2015 and with the way things are intertwined with the people involved, I don’t think we’re getting value for money.”

The document might show relationships between organisations but it didn’t make it clear whether the situation was legally or commercially sound, councillor Don McLeod said.

“It might aid our discussions if we got an opinion from a legal or commercial source on whether or not we should have concerns.”

Councillor Darryl Nelson didn’t mince words. “It’s a dog’s breakfast,” he said.

With no clear indication where council’s money was spent, councillor Russell Ellis said as a custodian of ratepayer money the situation made him uncomfortable.

“This doesn’t make good reading.”

Council business support group manager Paul Brake said he was trying to finalise an agreement with the organisation that would make it “crystal clear” what was being delivered for the council grant. He expects the organisation’s accounts for the past year to be ready next month.

While the council might provide 30 per cent of Grow Mid Canterbury’s funding, it did not own the organisation and other than asking how that money was spent it had no right to launch any kind of investiga-

tion into the organisation itself, Mr Brake said.

Grow Mid Canterbury chairman David Dynes said the organisation was functioning well. While it could survive without the council’s grant, the money was key in helping it obtain other government funding.

Other companies linked to Grow Mid Canterbury are NZ Dairy Careers and Mid Canterbury Workers’ Accommodation, both of which Grow Mid Canterbury’s chief executive Rob Brawley is a director. Mr Brawley and Mr Dynes are directors of Grow Mid Canterbury.

Grow Mid Canterbury is also linked with Methven Travel, whose director is David Dynes and with Methven Hot Pools of which it is a 42 per cent shareholder.

The young occupants of car that plunged more than 30m down a cliff yesterday have “miraculously” survived. A rescue helicopter was able to winch the youths after they got out of the upturned car wreckage which had driven off a rural road near Taihape about 9am.

One of the car’s occupants, an 18-year-old man from Bulls, was hoisted into the helicopter on a stretcher due to suspected spinal injuries. He was taken to Palmerston North Hospital. Two other occupants were from Marton and Bulls. Police, fire and the ambulance service also attended the accident.

Petricevic bid fails Former Bridgecorp boss Rod Petricevic will leave prison on Monday as planned. It comes after the High Court dismissed an attempt by the Sensible Sentencing Trust to keep him behind bars. Petricevic was sentenced to six years and 10 months in jail in 2012 for misleading investors. Bridgecorp collapsed in 2007 owing investors around $400 million dollars.

After serving half his sentence, Petricevic was granted parole last month and was due to be released on Monday.

■ MAYORAL SUPPORT FOR REFUGEES

Strong support ‘a must-have’

Joining the growing throng of New Zealand mayors who say they would take refugees into their own communities could put huge pressures on social resources in smaller communities such as Ashburton says mayor Angus McKay. Yes, it could be manageable in very small numbers, but the successful integration of refugees into the Ashburton community could stretch many facilities and

helping agencies, Mr McKay said. Led by Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown, mayors from several cities and larger districts are asking the Government to double the refugee quota from 750 to 1500 over the next five years.

The mayors have said they would support the call as long as there was appropriate resettlement support.

And Mr McKay agrees that taking refugees cannot be done without a good support network.

He’s led a Canterbury wide project to increase the number of migrants moving into the region as part of the Canterbury economic strategy and said that even for migrants who arrived with jobs already in place, support service were needed.

Increasing the number of planned migrants was important to grow Ashburton’s population and while refugees could also play a part in this population growth, they were likely to need a higher level of support

on several levels, he said.

For people who may arrive without jobs and no support systems in place, the district would have to be able to provide job training and social support and while some of this was already in place, greater numbers would mean greater demand on what were already limited resources, Mr McKay said.

“We’re working now to put the backup in place. You need to be geared up for migrants and for refugees and there is a dif-

ference. With refugees it would have to be done in a very balanced way.”

Research is currently being undertaken by a mayoral group on the impact of increasing the number of refugees across the country and the resources that would be required.

Mayors who have given their support include Auckland, Invercargill, Christchurch, Dunedin, Marlborough, Gisborne, Lower Hutt, and Hamilton.

Sculptor flat out ahead of exhibition

Sculptor Hannah Kidd is busier than ever, preparing her works for the upcoming SCAPE 8 exhibition.

The award-winning artist has been sculpting in steel rod and flattened corrugated iron, which she welds together, for over 10 years.

She set up shop in Methven’s town centre in 2013, and that is where she is working on her current project.

SCAPE 8 Public Art Christchurch Biennial is a contemporary art event, which mixes new artworks with existing legacy pieces, an education

programme and a public programme of events. It features artists from Christchurch, Auckland, Berlin, Australia and London.

The title for this year’s biennial is New Intimacies and within that there are three themes artists will respond to – Sight-lines, Inner Depths and Shared Strengths.

Ms Kidd has decided to base her sculptures on the final theme.

Thinking about her own post-earthquake experiences Ms Kidd said she decided to base her artwork around people doing normal, everyday activities.

The inspiration for the work was “kind of immediate”, she said.

“I needed to make pieces looking at the heroes of postquake [Canterbury] but I didn’t fancy making firefighters or people in high-vis.”

Her work involves four separate figures - the combined piece is called Avonside Drive.

After working on the pieces for the past few months, she now only has a couple of weeks left to finish them.

She said her figures will probably be the most practical and hands-on, others are much more conceptual.

The exhibition will run for

six weeks and then the works will be dispersed. Where to Ms Kidd is not quite sure yet.

At the same time Ms Kidd also has other pieces on the go, she is working on Golden Horse for Sculpture on the Peninsula which begins the first weekend of November and runs for three days. She has taken part in the event since 2003.

The SCAPE 8 biennial will be located around central Christchurch and linked via an art walkway.

All pieces are free-to-view and will be available to visit from October 3 to November 15.

The jury on the Luke Tipene murder trial has reached a stalemate and been discharged by the judge.

Vincent Angene Skeen, 17, has spent the last two weeks on trial in the High Court at Auckland after he killed 17-year-old rugby league rising star on November 1 last year.

A jury of six men and six women deliberated for more than a day and a half before informing Justice Mark Woolford they could not come to a unanimous or majority agreement.

At the outset of trial it was conceded by Skeen’s lawyer Lorraine Smith that her client was guilty of manslaughter.

But the hung jury means he was not convicted on any charge and there will now likely be a retrial with 12 new jurors.

The defendant and victim – who were not known to each other before that night – each arrived in Grey Lynn as partygoers spilled out on to the street in the early hours of November 1.

It was alleged Skeen intervened in what was supposed to be a “one-on-one” brawl between his friend and Mr Tipene’s friend – actions to which the rugby league starlet took exception.

The national age-grade representative punched the defendant to the ground but he eventually got up and sought retribution.

After allegedly smashing a beer bottle, Skeen held the “glass dagger” while flailing his arms at Mr Tipene.

One of blows penetrated the victim’s neck up to 12cm and pierced his jugular vein.

Witnesses gave evidence of blood squirting from the boy’s neck as he staggered off and he eventually died in hospital.

The Crown will now decide whether there will be a retrial for Skeen.

Family thanks friends, whanau for support

By AnnA LeAsk The family of a 6-year-old girl and her grandmother who died in a fire at their Palmerston North home this week have thanked their wider whanau and friends for their support.

Police last night named the victims of Thursday’s Exeter Street fire as Eunice Felton, 6, and her grandmother, Bessie Tehuia Tokona, 61.

Reece Felton posted a heartfelt message on Facebook hours before the names were released publicly.

“Kia ora whanau, first of all I would like to thank everyone for everything they have done, the aroha and love they have

shown our whanau in this time of sorrow,” he wrote.

“I would just like to say on behalf of all my family we love yous (sic) all and are truly grateful for all you have done.”

Mrs Tokona and Eunice were taken to Monrad Intermediate School yesterday so their Palmerston North whanau could pay their respects.

Today they would travel “home” to Ruatoria at Mangahanea Marae for a service which would be held after 3pm.

“All who have known our nan are more than welcome to come along,” Mr Felton posted.

“Also another big thank you to all our friends and family for all there (sic) help and support

they have given us, I thank the lord for all my family we still have with us.”

Detective Inspector Ross McKay of Central District CIB said police were thinking of the family.

“Our deepest sympathies go to Eunice and Bessie’s family at this tragic time, and we are continuing to offer them the appropriate support,” he said.

Mr McKay said police and fire investigators had now completed the scene examination, which confirmed that the fire started in the kitchen area, but was not believed to be suspicious.

The deaths have been referred to the coroner.

Woman bitten on arm by large dog A Whangarei woman bitten by a free roaming dog while walking near a popular sports park wants owners to keep their pets on leashes or keep them contained.

Hayley Downes was with a friend on Western Hills Dr, near the St John base, about 7.30pm on Tuesday when a large dog came running across Kensington Park and bit her on the arm.

The 34-year-old mother-of-

one said the dog _ she believed was a Rottweiler _ reared up and was just as tall as her.

“It bit me on the back of my right arm, between the shoulder and elbow, on the fleshy part and then took off,” Mrs Downes recalled.

At first she thought the teeth had just pierced the arm of her sweatshirt but after her friend took a closer look, they realised the injury needed medical

attention. Ms Downes went to Whangarei Hospital where a puncture wound and a larger tear were cleaned and plastered.

“They don’t like to stitch dog bites because of the infection potential,” she said, adding the result could have been far worse if a child had been attacked.

“Owners need to make sure they have their dogs under control and on a leash,” she said.

Ewe makes history with six lambs Six spring lambs born Tuesday on a Greytown farm to a single ewe was a one-in-a-million event, says a Massey University lecturer on sheep production.

Dr Lydia Cranston said the successful birth and survival of the east Fresian lambs – at the Greytown farm of Rex and Pam Saywell on the first day of spring on Tuesday – was exceptional and could be put down to the breed, ewes in optimal body condition, and the feed and feeding times.

“I’ve never heard of that in my lifetime or career. It would be one-in-a-million for sure, pretty dramatic, particularly with the survival.”

Dr Cranston said the east Fresian breed was known for its fertility and “with a more fecund breed you can get four or five, which is getting up there, but I think to have six is amazing, especially in New Zealand conditions when they’re outside and that”.

“I’ve heard of five before in a straight bred Finn flock, but not six. That is rare and pretty dramatic,” Dr Cranston said.

Kiwis can expect a weekend of cold temperatures, strong winds and rain, as a front makes its way slowly up the country. MetService meteorologist Karl Loots said the whole country was going to be hit by a wintry blast this weekend. “For the weekend we are going to see a significant cold weather outbreak coming. “We have a front that is making its way, tomorrow morning, towards the lower South Island. It then moves up during course of tomorrow, it will be situated just south of Wellington at midnight tomorrow night.” The front would bring snow down to near sea level for places such as Southland and Fiordland, and snow to around 300m for Canterbury. “Behind it we have got strong south-westerly winds so it’s going to feel pretty cold.”

On Sunday the front would spread up through the North Island.

“Really, Sunday into Monday is going to feel a lot colder, windier and showery. The lowest snow will probably be around 400m for the lower North Island.

Wedding dress lost Whangarei bride-to-be Shelley Reymond is hoping her “something borrowed” won’t have to be a wedding dress, after the one she ordered was lost by a courier company. “My mate suggested I get a leather cat woman suit to go down the aisle in, or imagine walking down the aisle in nothing but a garter,” Ms Reymond said.

Despite the jokes, she said the experience has been anything but amusing, with the wedding day in less than a month. Ms Reymond sent her measurements to a Chinabased tailor in July, factoring in the 15 days it would take to make the dress and the wait for the courier.

The dress was in fact delivered in this timeframe – on August 15 – but not to Ms Reymond. The courier has no idea what happened to the dress. Ms Reymond said the incident had cost her two days off work for stress and “two weeks’ good sleep”.

Attacked by bull A man was flown to hospital after a bull attacked him and sent him rolling 20m down a bank near Hastings yesterday. The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter airlifted the 68-year-old man to Hawke’s Bay Hospital from a farm on Flag Range Road, in Sherenden, yesterday morning. Helicopter pilot Jeremy Bruce said the man was moving some cattle when he turned around and saw a bull standing 10m away from him. The animal started “putting its head down and lining him him up”. The bull charged, striking the man in the chest and inflicting chest wounds, and sent him rolling about 20m down a bank. When emergency services arrived the victim was conscious and talking, although he was “pretty sore,” Mr Bruce said. The bull had been known to attack people in the past.

“This particular bull has done this before to another man.” He said the rescue helicopter was called to up to three incidents in cattle yards per year. A hospital spokesman said the man was discharged yesterday afternoon. He declined to talk about his ordeal.

New head brings raft of skills

Mid Canterbury’s tourism industry will be capitalising on a large pool of commercial experience when the new head of Experience Mid Canterbury, Bruce Moffat takes over as chief executive.

Mr Moffat has an airline and travel background and had a significant sales role in the start-up Pacific Blue (now Virgin Australia).

He helped build this business from an airline operating 10 flights out of Christchurch per

week to an operation that ran in excess of 300 flights per week – both domestic New Zealand and internationally.

He was also responsible for the implementation of an “innovation lab” to improve customer experience directly from client feedback, a pivotal factor that differentiated the airline from the competition Experience Mid Canterbury board chairman Dominic Moran said Mr Moffat would bring an extensive background in the tourism industry and strong management experience to the

role. “We’re delighted with the platform we’ve built with Experience Mid Canterbury and Bruce will bring tactical engagement to the role, internally with management skills and externally with his marketing and sales skills.”

Mr Moffat would be a strong advocate for Mid Canterbury’s tourism sector, and the appointment came at a time when the district was working to develop a more diversified economy during a difficult time for dairying, he said.

“Bruce’s skills in develop-

ing and converting sales in the tourism sector will prove invaluable for Mid Canterbury and greatly assist our effort to build a “Team Mid Canterbury” approach amongst local tourism businesses and stakeholders,” added Dr Moran.

Mr Moffat said that his challenge would be to see the district gained more than its fair share of the predicted large increase in visitor numbers to the Canterbury region.

He takes up the position left vacant by Nigel Birt, from September 28.

Special donation Pupils from Ashburton Borough School made a special donation to St John last week.

After visiting St John in Ashburton, the children were inspired to collect soft toys to give to those children who may have to ride in an ambulance, or whose parents may have to ride in an ambulance.

Teacher Alice Czerski said some of the pupils had been in an ambulance, and they said it was “really special” when they were given a soft toy.

“It was great to see the action the children took in deciding to collect these soft toys from classes around the school,” she said.

“They enjoyed going to the other classes and explaining why they were collecting the soft toys.”

Deaths of two babies being investigated Police are investigating the unexplained deaths of a Canterbury woman’s two babies and say they are looking into Munchausen syndrome by proxy – a form of child abuse involving the exaggeration or fabrication of illnesses or symptoms by a caregiver.

It was reported last night that a 6-week-old boy and his 2-month-old sister died 14 months apart.

They died at a Canterbury rental property where they lived with their parents.

Police said the circumstances surrounding the deaths were

similar and neither infant had suffered identifiable injuries.

After both deaths the children’s mother, now 21, told police she put them to bed in the morning after they had been fed.

When she went to check them a short time later they had stopped breathing.

The baby girl died on May 15 and since then a team of detectives have been investigating.

A scene examination has been carried out at the house where the girl and her brother died and their parents have

been formally interviewed, it was reported.

It is understood both parents denied any wrongdoing.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said that as part of the police inquiry investigators had looked at a disorder known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

Also known as “medical child abuse”, the disorder is relatively rare and involves a parent or other adult closely involved in a child’s care making up or exaggerating symptoms. It is a mental illness and requires treatment.

Tests have been carried out to identify if there were any genetic factors that led to the children’s deaths.

Results were expected back in several months.

The woman’s 6-week-old son stopped breathing at home on March 6 last year and emergency services were called but he could not be revived.

Mr Cottam said the woman also had a four-year-old son.

She had voluntarily given up custody while the deaths of his siblings were investigated and Child Youth and Family were involved.

Toxic swede analysis ‘incomplete’ The vet who raised the alarm about the toxic nature of herbicide-tolerant swedes says the plant analysis released by DairyNZ yesterday is incomplete.

More than a year ago, VetSouth director Dr Mark Bryan started to voice concerns about the relatively new herbicidetolerant (HT) swede, which has now been linked to liver disease, photosensitivity, and the death of dairy cows near his Winton practice.

He said more than 200 cows died in the winter of 2014, and “many more” fell ill, after being poisoned by what they were eating through the winter.

Yesterday, DairyNZ released an analysis of plants gathered from 11 Southland farms where cows suffered health issues – seven of which used the HT swedes.

The HT swedes analysed had significantly higher levels of toxic glucosinolates in the stem, leaf and flower and DairyNZ warned farmers not to use HT swedes in the spring when the leafy portion of the plant had matured.

In what was its 11th advisory on the issue since September 5, 2014, the industry group reiterated its message that a warm winter with few frosts allowed all swedes to grow more leafy – and therefore all swedes contained higher levels of glucosinolates last year. Those cows that were fed too much of any type of swede were more likely to be affected by the toxic glucosinolates, DairyNZ regional team leader for Southland/ South Otago Richard Kyte said. “[The plant analysis] was just showing that in the reproductive state, in the spring, with that amount of leaf the HT is a problem,” Mr Kyte said.

“We’re recommending farmers don’t use it as a spring feed, because that’s where all the risk factors come together.”

Mr Bryan said while the warm winter played a role in the cow deaths, a complete analysis would have included plant samples from earlier in the season.

“We’ve got no analysis of HT swedes early in the season and we know they were killing cows, too,” he said. “We’ve got no evidence to say they were safe earlier in the season either.”

“Our advice to farmers has been, since last year, ‘It probably is a combination of swede variety and climate – and you need to pick the thing that you can control’.”

This year, informed farmers were still using HT swedes, PGG Wrightson Seeds New Zealand Seeds general manager David Green said.

Palliative care review much needed

Hospice Mid Canterbury is welcoming the government’s review of palliative care services.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman said the review would be undertaken by the Ministry of Health, with support from the palliative care advisory panel.

The review is expected to cover both primary and specialist services at home, in the hospital and in aged residential care facilities.

In Ashburton, palliative care is provided in the community and in the hospital.

The service is provided by the Ashburton Hospital Palliative Care Fund which is made up of donations used for purchasing equipment and other resources to improve patient experience – both in the hospital and at home.

Then there is the Ashburton Palliative Care Trust which was set up 20 years ago to provide support for palliative care within the community. Finally,

there’s the latest addition – the Hospice Mid Canterbury Trust.

The trust’s objective is to enhance the quality of life for all Mid Cantabrians dealing with life-limiting illnesses and bereavement.

Christine Dean, who is affiliated with both trusts and also works in the aged care sector said she believed the review, compiled with funding from this year’s budget announcement, would assist in developing the local workforce. “[It will] help address increasing demand by our ageing population who experience more complex and chronic health conditions in their later years,” she said.

Ms Dean said in Mid Canterbury, services already work closely with people and their families in primary care, as well as at the hospital. Extra support is also available from specialist clinical palliative care services.

“Strong local community support includes the Cancer Society … and other community services such as Presbyterian

Hospice Mid Canterbury is welcoming the government’s review of palliative care services.

Support, so this review will assist with even closer collaboration between these local agencies,” Ms Dean said.

“Improving existing palliative care services and identifying the likely demand for these over the next decade is vital if we are to

meet our community’s needs in the foreseeable future. The review will be a big step towards this.”

A no-nonsense judge with a sharp wit District court judge Lynton Edwin Laing 1935 to 2015

A

shburton may not have been his place of birth, but it’s the place former judge Lynton Laing made his home in retirement.

And as he did in every place he called home during his long career in the judiciary, Lynton Laing made his mark in his community. In retirement he remained a sharp observer and commentator on life, retaining his ready wit and continuing to keep his mind sharp and active.

He became a regular contributor to debate through the letters to the editor columns in the Ashburton Guardian and could always be counted on to provide a collection of facts that would neatly sum up and stop an argument in its tracks.

He may have stepped aside from his long career as a judge, but he never stepped aside from matters legal and was always happy to offer an insightful opinion or comment. His home library was stocked with legal tomes and he could almost instantly recall cases past and the passing parade of solicitors and offenders that were his working life.

The man from the deep south started his legal career after graduating from Otago University in 1959.

He joined a law firm in Gore, was offered a partnership, but elected to take up a command in the territorial army, transferring to regular force and moving to Malayasia.

It was there he met his wife Pamela and, with two young children in tow, the couple returned to New Zealand and Lynton re-established his legal career in Alexandra and then Invercargill.

He became Crown Prosecutor for Southland and later the first district court judge who was able to preside over jury trials.

He would go on to build a remarkable career as both a resident and a travelling judge, working out of Wellington and later Palmerston North.

Along the way he built a reputation as a no-nonsense dispenser of justice. Fair and firm and always to the point.

He believed the judiciary was not a popularity contest, it was about knowing the law and ensuring everyone in his courtroom played by the rules.

Time in a courtroom was not to be wasted. A good summation

Lynton Laing 1935 to 2015

was a quick summation.

While he may have retired after a stint of 20 years on the bench, Lynton never lost his love of the law or his love of words.

His years in retirement were spent happily fishing, hunting, reading and keeping in touch with the legal world.

Ashburton became his home, but his razor-sharp mind en-

sured he was still part of the world.

But time catches up with even the sharpest mind and most critical eye and only a few months before his death, Lynton and Pamela decided it was time to head back to their heartland, Dunedin.

Lynton’s untimely death, however, meant that as a couple they had only a very short

time to enjoy their new lives in Chatsford Retirement Village in Mosgiel.

Lynton Edwin Laing died on August 12, 2015, aged 80 years.

He is survived by his wife Pamela, his three children Ralph, Rachel and Rosaly and his four grandchildren Alexander, Charlotte, Sophie and Angus.

$100,000 levy hard to swallow

By AlexAndrA newlove He wants to create 20 new jobs, the council wants him to pay more than $100,000 for the privilege.

Businessman Alan Lints said there is something wrong with this picture and wants Whangarei District Council to reconsider its development contributions policy, which he said could put people off setting up businesses in the district.

Development contributions, introduced to Whangarei in 2005, help cover the infrastructure costs impacted by growth, including roading, wastewater and water reticulation.

WDC spokesman Paul Dell said development contributions were introduced at the behest of the community.

“The call came from many communities who said: we are experiencing major growth and we don’t see why us, as ratepayers, should have to pay the costs of all that growth.”

Northland Chamber of Commerce chief executive Tony Collins said council could consider a moratorium on development contributions.

“It’s the only way we could tell if they are a barrier to business growth,” he said.

Mr Lints is in the midst of building an Educare childcare centre at Tikipunga’s Totara Parklands development, which would employ up to 20 staff and would include a cafe.

Halfway through the build, he opened a bill of $105,000 from the council for development contributions.

“This has been quite a killer.

We want to create jobs and the biggest handbrake has been the council contributions,” Mr Lints said.

Mr Lints owned eight childcare centres in Whangarei, one on the Kapiti Coast, one in Waikato, and was looking to set up another under Hauraki District Council.

He said development contributions under other councils were negligible or non-existent.

“You want more people to invest in Northland, you can’t have it both ways,” he said.

Mr Dell said the council projected collecting about $30 million in development contributions over the next 20 years.

“If you look at the growing areas – for example, Tauranga, Hamilton – they all have development contributions.

“There are a lot that don’t have development contributions and those areas don’t have growth.”

The Blue September campaign aims to raise awareness for prostate cancer in New Zealand.

Not all hope was lost though, the business still had a gold coin donation sausage sizzle which attracted a few patrons looking to get out of the cold.

Clifford: Refugee centres i

Mid Canterbury is not resourced to accommodate newly-arrived refugees, but displaced people would be welcome to make the district their long-term home, Safer Ashburton manager Kevin Clifford says.

There are now about 52 million refugees around the world, the highest number since the end of World War Two. Shocking images out of Europe have highlighted the plight of these people. This week the heart-wrenching photo of threeyear-old Aylan Kurdi lying dead in the surf on a Turkish beach brought home the reality of the crisis.

In the past year New Zealand

has taken 756 refugees under its United Nations-endorsed quota, including 83 from Syria.

The Government has come under criticism for not immediately upping the ante, however Prime Minister John Key has cited a lack of resources required to integrate displaced people as a reason to proceed with caution.

Under the current system resettlement programme refugees are granted permanent residency and spend their first six weeks at the Mangere refugee resettlement centre.

“At the moment the only properly resourced refugee centres in New Zealand are in cities where they have staffing and knowledge to be able to support and cope with traumatised people,”

Mr Clifford said. “The support required would be quite specific.

“Refugees, after they have settled in, do move around the country to take up various opportunities and they would be welcome here – but we can’t offer the support they would initially require.”

Mr Clifford, who has worked with refugees as a Red Cross volunteer, said the initial costs of resettling would be recovered relatively quickly.

“By and large the people I worked with were grateful for anything – we didn’t have to work hard to attempt to accommodate them, they needed the support because of the traumatic circumstances which resulted in them being here.

“While there are initial costs

involved in bringing refugees into the country, long term I think you will find the substantial majority of these people settle in, take up jobs and contribute to the economy just as any migrant would.

Historically people who arrived as refugees have worked hard to create opportunities.

“Many people have come from countries where there was no social support and they were happy to get stuck in and work incredibly hard – they certainly were not looking to become a drain on the economy.

“Once they had dealt

with their trauma and settled in they were able to make a very positive contribution.”

Refugee crisis Q&A ...

How bad is the refugee crisis?

There are currently around 52 million refugees around the world – numbers not seen since the end of World War Two. Images coming out of Europe have highlighted the plight of millions of refugees who have fled from Syria since conflict began in 2011.

Closer to New Zealand, Burma’s persecuted Rohingya Muslim population has fled in droves, with many ending up marooned at sea on overcrowded vessels, often without food or water.

How is the world responding?

The numbers of refugees entering or attempting to get to Europe has caused a range of reactions from governments. In Europe, Germany has led the way with plans to take 800,000 asylum seekers this year.

Some Europeans have set-up voluntary campaigns such as Refugees Welcome, which is a scheme for sharing homes dubbed the “Airbnb for refugees”.

What is NZ doing?

New Zealand is in the UN’s refugee programme and has a quota of 750 refugees a year with leeway to take 75 fewer or more.

In the past year 756 refugees came to New Zealand under the quota, including 83 from Syria.

Refugees are given permanent residence and spend their first six weeks at the Mangere refugee resettlement centre.

Is that enough?

All parties within Parliament, except for National, believe the refugee quota should be increased, which would be the first increase in 30 years.

New Zealand is ranked 87th in the world for total refugee resettlement per capita.

Non-government organisations have also called on the Government to increase the quota or allow for an emergency refugee allocation, as happened with the Tampa refugees.

Prime Minister John Key has been firm on not increasing the quota, but has since softened his stance, and said the Government could move earlier than a regular review of the quota next year.

The Syrian refugee crisis is evidence of the collapse of the nation state and the world must do better than it is at addressing the problem, according to former finance minister Ruth Richardson.

At a recent Rural Business Network meeting in Methven, Ms Richardson said she had witnessed first-hand the tide of human misery that has washed over Europe on a biking trip though Austria and Northern Italy.

“Under every bridge and in every town you see a huge wave of human misery seeking to escape the atrocities at home.”

Ms Richardson said her daughter was deployed in Lebanon this year

where a population of five million now had one and a half million Syrian refugees to deal with.

“Imagine that on the Canterbury Plains. There are huge displacements and seismic shifts going on. Four million people have left Syria and are living in squalor in camps around the region.”

She said the idea of a nation state was something we took for granted because we live on an island.

“It’s very easy to think about the integrity of our nation state when the only big deal is the debate about the flag, but for many nation states (like Syria) it’s a debate about something much more profound and much more serious.”

Every day the world was seeing the

collapse of the nation state as “we know it” she said.

The Middle East particularly had nations without states and states without nations, with Iraq being an example of the former.

“Shias, Sunnis and Kurds are never going to hold hands and become a nation state. And then you think about Isis – a state without a nation and a most foul proposition occupying a third of Iraq, Syria and Libya.”

Ms Richardson said the Arab world was “toxic” and at war with itself, but New Zealanders must learn about it and would be impacted by it because we qualified as infidels.

“It is felt in every corner of the globe ... To me it’s cutting off the head of the snake that matters.”

Al Drye has taken up a new post, as the lay minister of St Mark’s Church. He sat down with the Guardian’s Caitlin Porter to talk about life in rural Rakaia.

If it’s farming or God, Al’s got something to say A

l Drye is spending his time introducing himself to anyone and everyone.

Originally from the United Kingdom, Al is a lay minister at Rakaia’s St Mark’s Church.

A lay minister is someone who is not fulltime paid clergy or ordained, but performs the same functions as someone who is.

Although Al is part-time at St Mark’s.

The father of seven began his job in Rakaia in February, after he decided to step away from his role of working with youth at the Parish of St John in Christchurch.

“I have been doing youth and children work in Christchurch for 15 years,” Al said.

He had trained other people to do similar work and thought it was time to move on and try something new.

Before making the move to New Zealand for his job in Christchurch, Al worked at St Andrew’s Church in Plymouth, England, and has also tried his

hand at primary teaching.

Al makes the trip down from Christchurch every Wednesday and Sunday, and spends his time visiting people in the community.

“People are so open [here],” he said.

He has a farming background and, as he puts it, “can talk the hind legs off a donkey about farming”.

When he was 18 years old Al came to New Zealand while studying at university in Aberdeen. He needed to get practical experience on a farm and found himself on the other side of the world, working in Winchester.

His interest in religion peaked while he was at university and it was then he became a Christian.

“Within that first year I started to get involved in children’s work, which I thoroughly enjoyed,” he said.

“I wanted to spend time with people and the community … that’s what Christianity is about.”

He loved the youth work so much that after graduating, Al decided to study towards a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching.

“I did that for a couple of years and worked in London.

I was persuaded by my friends at the time to go off to Bible College.”

Following that he did youth work in Plymouth, south of London, for three years. While there he met a man from Christchurch and they instantly became great mates.

“We got on like a house on fire,” he said.

While in Plymouth his friend suggested he set to work at the church where his friend was just finishing up – that happened to be in Christchurch.

It took some time to get the ball rolling, but he and his wife checked out Christchurch and were keen to make it their new base.

It took two years, but everything eventually fell into place.

Al, his wife and their two children moved to New Zealand

in 2000 and five weeks after their move they had their third child.

While Al said he enjoyed his work in Christchurch, he wanted to give others a chance so made enquiries within the Anglican Church about working as a minister. However, with seven school-aged children based in Christchurch, he didn’t want to move far.

The bishop then decided he could be placed in Rakaia. It is intended he will be there for a year, but is hopeful he will continue on next year.

It’s all up to the bishop though, he said.

Not only does he work parttime but he studies as well working towards a Post Graduate Diploma in Theology at the University of Otago.

He said his studies were going well and he should be finished by the end of next year.

Much of his course is done by video link, which fits in well with his schedule.

While he has been involved

with the church and doing ministry for a long time, Al has to finish his studies in order to be ordained.

However, he is enjoying the process and said Rakaia was a “perfect fit”.

Not only does the farming aspect work well, but he is also required to teach as part of his job. “[I have to] teach the Bible clearly to adults and children,” he said.

“So I combine what I teach … it is very user friendly.”

Al will be reviewed at Christmas time and it will then be decided whether he will stay on for another year.

“The bishop has to think about the needs all over Canterbury,” Al explained.

He wants to stick around though, as prior to him Rakaia had three ministers over the period of a year.

“I absolutely love it … my passion is to talk to people and have an opportunity to start talking about Jesus.”

Carl Middleton’s lifetime of work auctioned off Horses were Carl Middleton’s life, but ill health forced the successful owner, trainer and driver to put his horses and his training gear under the auctioneer’s hammer.

While the work of his lifetime was passing into new hands, Middleton lost his final race.

The cancer he had battled for some time claimed his life and he died in Christchurch Hospital part-way through the dispersal sale on Thursday.

During his racing career the 66-year-old had gained a reputation as a trainer of meticulous habits.

His horses were well bred, well cared for and well trained and his gear was maintained to the highest standard.

The sale attracted buyers from around New Zealand.

Trotters were the Highbank trainer’s speciality and his most famous moment on track would have been when the horse he owned, trained and drove, Fraggle Rock, won the Interdominion final for trotters in Auckland in 1991.

UFB install frustrations rising

The completion of Ashburton’s ultra-fast broadband roll-out may have put us at the head of the field in New Zealand but consumers are increasingly finding that taking advantage of warp speed internet is no easy task.

The Guardian regularly receives calls from disgruntled residents wondering how it can take several weeks to bridge the small fibre gap between street and house.

They say they call, but often calls go unanswered or requests are logged and nothing happens. They call to check where they are in the queue and they simply remain in the queue.

Nothing happens.

The UFB roll-out across New Zealand’s towns and cities is largely being carried out by Chorus and they’re well aware that there are many potential users who are becoming frustrated by long waiting times says communications advisor Nathan Beaumont.

“The time it takes to connect people to the UFB network varies from install to install. This is for a number of reasons including the customer choosing a time and date which suits them, but if there are customers who have had or are having an unhappy experience getting UFB connected, then on behalf of Chorus I want to apologise,” Mr Beaumont said.

The UFB programme was one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects undertaken in New Zealand and it was inevitable that not every connection experience was a good experience, he said.

“We want as many people as possible to experience it (UFB) and Ashburton residents can be assured that we are listening and we’re working as hard as possible to smooth out any issues with the roll-out.”

Across New Zealand there were tens of thousands of installs completed to a high standard, but it was inevitable that there would be occasions when expectations were not met, Mr Beaumont said.

“We’re just as unhappy as they are when this happens and we’ll work as quickly as we can to rectify any issues.”

Achieving a good install relied on Chorus and internet service providers working together and Chorus was focused on ensuring it achieved a consistent approach in its dealings with those providers and the rest of the industry, he said.

If Chorus has been earning itself the wrath of customers for its slow UFB installation programme, Spark was also under fire from people around the Ashburton District for delays in reconnections when people moved house and for the difficulty many with problems had in having calls answered, logged and responded to.

Several callers to the Guardian said they had been on hold for more than one hour as they tried to sort out their connection issues.

Over recent weeks Spark’s

call centre had been under intense pressure because of a big increase in customers signing up for UFB packages, communications advisor Lucy Fullarton said.

“Because fibre is a new technology and requires some physical installation as well as all the technical stuff in the backend, it is a far more complex process than simply switching a customer to broadband over a copper connection,” she said.

In July Spark frontline call centre staff were doing about 11,000 hours per week; in August that jumped to 15,000 hours, a 34 per cent increase, Ms Fullarton said.

Recent publicity around Spark reducing its customer service numbers were incorrect, she said.

Those that had taken place over the past year were mainly in the backend of the business.

New Zealand based frontline staff had increased slightly during the year.

“We agree the delays our customers face when they call us with a question or a problem are unacceptable and so we’re working hard to fix that. We’ve hired 90 new customer service agents recently and we’re recruiting another 100.”

For customers who were having problems installing fibre or with their fibre connections Spark had set up a specialised fibre team of around 30 customer service agents, she said.

INSTALLATION PROCESS ■ Customers contact Spark to let them know they want fibre installed. Spark checks to see if a fibre connection has been made.

■ An order is taken and the customer is told they will be contacted in about five days by the local fibre company.

■ The customer’s order is passed on to their local fibre company and a new modem is sent to the customer.

■ Either the fibre company or Spark will contact the customer and set up an appointment for a technician to visit their home and assess the work needed ■ The technician visits and works out how fibre will be connected to their home. A plan will be written and the customer asked to sign this off ■ Representatives from the fibre company will carry out work of extending the fibre cable from the street to the customers’ home.

■ An installation appointment will be made where the fibre company will bring fibre from outside the customer’s home to the inside.

■ Spark makes the new fibre connection live and checks the phone line is working.

■ Using a ladle, pour the mixture into the prepared pastry case, making sure that it doesn’t overflow.

■ Sprinkle the semi-dried tomatoes on top along with the pine nuts.

from the oven and set aside for five minutes.

■ Serve on a plate and garnish with pea tendrils, serve with your favourite chutney or sauce.

Poor finishing costs Mt Hutt basketballers

Mt Hutt were downed by Hagley Community College and Fiordland College in their A Secondary Schools’ Premierships Zone 4 matches at the EA Networks Centre stadium yesterday.

Mt Hutt faced Hagley first and trailed 10-9 after the first quarter before taking the lead for an 18-15 halftime score.

Both sides matched each other in the third quarter, but the Mt Hutt boys edged out to a 32-31 lead before the fourth quarter

ended in a 47-47 stalemate. Mt Hutt battled hard in extra time but eventually fell to a 62-54 loss.

Mt Hutt began their afternoon match well with a 20-16 lead after the first quarter and a 30-27 advantage at halftime, but

Fiordland found their rhythm in the third and fourth quarters to take a 67-46 win.

Mt Hutt coach Kaylib Gorrie said that his team performed well in both matches and will now be looking ahead to today’s games.

Long time between drinks The Warriors last savoured the sweet taste of victory on July 12, with their round 16 28-14 win over Melbourne Storm.

That game featured plenty of highlights of the Warriors at their attacking best with halfback Shaun Johnson running the show and Nathan Friend backflipping his way on to ESPN. The future looked bright, with the Warriors claiming a top four berth and looking on course for their first finals appearance since the 2011 grand final.

Shield going on the line

Stalwart wing attack Kirsty Naish is confident Mid Canterbury Senior A can reclaim the Hanan Shield when old rivals North Otago and South Canterbury arrive at the EA Networks Centre for the first time next Saturday.

Mid Canterbury played two preseason ties last weekend and showed plenty of grit to down Nelson 45-43 before toppling a local invitational side 49-26 over 15-minute quarters.

“They (Nelson) were real strong, real physical girls.

“We played 15 minute quarters, where we usually play 10 minutes and we just played outstanding.

“We really gelled, we just let the ball go and it’s probably the fittest rep team I’ve been part,” she said.

Naish, who has won the shield three times in her seven seasons as a senior player, said Mid Canterbury have a good blend of youth and experience this season.

“We’ve got a lot more experience, and we’ve got a bit of youth as well.

“Last year it was quite a young team with a couple of experienced players,” she said.

Mid Canterbury last held the shield in 2013 before North Otago were triumphant in Oamaru for the first time since 2007 last year, and Naish is expecting another tough challenge this season.

Ashburton College sports teams have reached the business end of tournament week with finals and playoffs being played across the South Island.

College’s senior boys’ basketballers were too good for St Thomas of Canterbury School with a 67-43 win on Thursday.

A strong team effort and a 17-point haul for Matt Rae saw the boys through before a disappointing 83-53 loss to Rangiora High School in the afternoon fixture.

Kody Stuthridge-Croot topscored with 13 points but the loss condemned Ashburton to fourth place in their pool.

Kiwi Paul Lasike’s quest to crack the NFL received a major boost yesterday after catching a touchdown pass in a pre-season game for the Arizona Cardinals. Lasike, who earlier in the week survived a round of roster cuts, caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Phillip Sims in the second quarter of the Cardinals’ 22-20 win over the Denver Broncos at Mile High Stadium in Colorado. Lasike showed great hands to snag the pass in the end zone, with the Cardinals’ Twitter feed praising the Kiwi’s catch.

“They’re quite often tricky to combat because of their flair, but I think we’re a lot stronger and fitter than we were in prior years.

“I think that the key is to just

The 27-year-old believes the side that makes the least amount of errors will take the shield home, with little between the three teams.

“We’ve played a couple of their (South Canterbury) club teams throughout the season

in friendly games, and they all play very similar styles of netball.

“All three regions are very similar, they’ll have some experience and youth but I guess at the end of the day it’s about who executes and makes less errors.”

Neither side dominated possession with chances few and far between before a powerful longrange effort beat goalkeeper Pat Sandrey.

The girls’ football team held their nerve to topple St Margaret’s on penalties and finish in ninth place.

College went behind early on due to some poor defending but the girls responded well.

A stinging shot from Ashleigh Leonard was parried away by the goalkeeper into the path of Amy Pearson, who slotted the

loose ball into the back of the net.

The two sides could not be separated at 1-1 in normal time, but a confident display from goalkeeper Jess Lima saw her side take the win in the shootout.

The girls’ hockey team’s run of fine results came to an end with a 3-1 loss in the final to James Hargest College in Cromwell.

id Canterbury’s stalwart hooker James Carr’s Heartland Championship season ended before it began, like last season, with another injury blow that leaves him sidelined indefinitely.

Carr tore his hamstring off the bone in a preseason clash against Ellesmere, and soon realised his 11th season with the Hammers was over.

“We were only about 10 minutes in to the game.

“I was in a ruck trying to pick the ball to go and I got scissored, I couldn’t get out of it and tore the top of my hamstring,” said Carr, who remains remarkably positive following two seasons marred by injury.

The Southern player was initially unaware of the seriousness of the injury, until an MRI scan revealed that 90 per cent of the muscle had been detached from the bone.

“I was trying to do rehab, but then it was evident when the MRI scan came through that the tear was actually really quite bad and I was going to need surgery rather than rehab, because it was only hanging on by a few strands,” he said.

Carr’s latest layoff follows a shoulder injury that kept him out of action for all but one match - the Ranfurly Shield challenge against Counties Manukau last season, but the 33-year-old reflected positively on the experience, and believes that he is now well-equipped

to recover for next year.

“I had ligament damage and tore tendons off the bone in my right shoulder,” he said.

“I guess last year helped me deal with this year’s issues, you just have to accept that it’s happened.

“I think it sometimes takes a couple of weeks to sink in, but last year probably prepared me and I know that when I get the operation done and the rehab that I can prepare for another season.”

Carr said his choice to have surgery on his injured shoulder was to ensure his longevity, with the hope of giving his all for the Hammers this season, before disaster struck in July.

“When you get to this sort of age it’s a year on year thing.

“I had shoulder surgery last year and I missed the season because I knew I needed to have it done to be able to play properly this year.

“The fact I’m missing out this year, it’s pretty gutting to have an injury like that,” he said.

Carr is now awaiting a consultation with a surgeon to discuss what is required to repair the damaged muscle, but is realistic that an operation will not solve everything at this stage of his career.

“The surgery is important.

“I knew that if I had the surgery on it I would be fit enough to have another season,” he said.

“My only worry, and I have been told by the sports doctor, that the chances of tearing the whole thing again is pretty

high, and the strength of it will be pretty weak due to the size of the tear.”

Despite being unavailable this season, Carr attends the Hammers’ training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and coach Grant Keenan is pleased to have his centurion around the squad.

“I’m just trying to be part of the team.

“I enjoy the environment, you can get an injury and put your feet up but for me it was about trying to maintain some kind of fitness and strength,” said Carr.

“I’ve still been going to the gym to know that going in to the operation I’ll be as fit and as strong as I can be, especially in the hamstring area to speed up the recovery at the other end.

“I’ve enjoyed being part of the team, but it’s never quite the same when you’re not playing.

“I’ll be excited to at least get another club season under my belt and if I’m good enough to be in Mid Canterbury, I’d like to be there next season.”

The veteran forward has high expectations of his team-mates for this campaign, and is confident the squad can deliver against King Country today.

“The key thing is being top dog, everyone will want to take you down, at the moment the squad looks as strong as it has been,” he said.

“We’ve typically always beaten them (King Country), we’ve never really had too many losses against them, so I’m confident.

“It’ll be tough but I expect a win.”

id Canterbury skipper Jon Dampney has called for his team to improve on last weekend’s performance against Wanganui and take a third successive win against King Country at the Ashburton Showgrounds today.

The Meads Cup holders have started their Heartland Championship campaign with two wins over South Canterbury (34-17) and Wanganui (30-28), but Dampney insisted the basic errors made against the Butcher Boys last Saturday cannot be repeated.

“We all have to put a hell of a lot better performance out there than what we did the week before against Wanganui,” he said.

“We didn’t really front up.

“The contact wasn’t what we expect of ourselves, it was just silly little errors, we fell asleep just before half-

time again, which proved costly for us as it let them back in the game when we could have really put it away.”

Despite some frustrating periods in last Saturday’s clash, Dampney was pleased with the determination his players showed to churn out the win.

“We showed great character to get the result and the four points which is the most important thing, and it’s the same going in to this week.

“We need four points and nothing less is going to be acceptable,” he said.

The 32-year-old loose forward said he is expecting another physical encounter against the Rams today.

“They’ve got a tough, physical forward pack, they’re always going to be strong up front,” he said “They normally have quite a few good, slick backs that like to play the ball out wide and we’ve found over the years that they use their pack a lot, but we’ll be up for the challenge.”

he All Blacks talk a lot about learning from success, not that they have much of a choice.

Over the last four years, they have built a winning record that is scarcely believable in the age of professional sport - 47 tests, just three defeats. That’s a lot of success to learn from.

The standard line, however, is that you learn from your losses; that you remember the uncomfortable moments, the pain of second, and then you use that to motivate you in ways victory never can.

Pain has been in short supply for this team over the last four years but, in the history of World Cups, the All Blacks have a reservoir of residual discomfort to call upon.

They will know this - none more so than their coach and captain, for whom 2007 remains a wound still not completely healed.

In 2011, the All Blacks had the chance to repeat history.

In 2015 they have an opportunity to create it, by becoming the first team to win consecutive World Cups.

“That’s the mountain we want to climb,” said Richie McCaw. It is a very tall mountain.

For the All Blacks to do what no other side has done, they will firstly have to do what no other All Blacks team has done - make a final in a World Cup in Europe.

It is easy to be fooled by the lack of realistic resistance in pool play but the easy stroll to the quarter-finals will quickly give way to a steep and more perilous gradient.

What will help is the experience - McCaw, Daniel Carter, Keven Mealamu and Tony Woodcock all have more than 100 test caps.

Make no mistake, those men understand what it takes to win, and they know something else, too. They know how easy it is to lose.

Brad Thorn believed the 2011 campaign felt like a job.

This tournament shapes as something far greater.

Meanwhile, the No 1-ranked side is heading to a Rugby World Cup on the back of four years of largely unadulterated success, which is what they have had to learn from.

Hewitt shows how it’s done

BY DARREN WALTON Roger Federer lauded Lleyton Hewitt for showing him “how it’s done” after his career-long friend and foe bowed out of the US Open for the last time.

Hewitt and Federer, a pair of 34-year-old fathers of three and four, have been clashing since they were 15 and played doubles together on their Wimbledon debut as teenagers in 1999.

As Hewitt rose to become the youngest-ever year-end No.1 following his grand slam breakthrough at Flushing Meadows in 2001, Federer took a few years longer to flourish.

The great Swiss lost seven of his first nine encounters with Hewitt, but now leads their head-to-head series 18-9.

“He was a big challenge in my career, to understand how in the world can you be so tough physically and mentally at such a young age,” Federer said yesterday.

“I think he really changed things around and showed me how it’s done.

“He made me work harder in practice, get my act together on the court, play tough but fair.”

In recent years, Federer and Hewitt have turned practice partners before the season’s four slams.

■ OPINION

Pushing the try-scoring bandwagon A six point try.

There’s a concept that’s jumped right out of left field this week, with the Welsh second tier rugby competition apparently all set to try it out, maybe starting this weekend even.

And it may well herald a raft of big changes, and that’s to a rule book that’s already about a thousand pages long.

It is a bandwagon that some big names have seen fit to attach their names to, right up to no less than Steve Hansen himself, who (rather weirdly I thought) tossed in the seven-point try as next cab off the rank.

Perhaps he was a little preoccupied with an upcoming task that may be requiring a fair portion of his concentration, and wasn’t thinking through the full effects of such a wide-ranging

statement, because changing the scoring even a little bit radically alters whole mindsets around the game.

Sure, every team will want to score more tries, which is the admirable aim of the whole idea.

But also the defensive systems, which as so many coaches will point out are the winning of big games, will get even tighter, and defenders will be even more willing to give away penalties in their own half to stop attackers progessing.

It happens in big matches, and you’ve seen it a hundred times in club games, your team defending desperately on your 22, and the penalties start coming thick and fast.

The players become more frustrated, the ref can’t help but dish out more penalties, and all

your supporters are screaming at the ref for unfairly picking on your side.

It’s a scenario that will happen more and more, especially if the points for a penalty were reduced to two points as well, as stopping tries becomes absolutely paramount.

And all that’s without thinking about the next step; the air will be thick with those yellow cards.

The five-point try was supposed to open up a world of running rugby in every game; what was the score in the last

World Cup final? 8-7.

The one before? 15-6.

Not exactly blazing try-fests.

Changing the scoring system isn’t going to fix anything; somehow the powers that be have to modify the way players and coaches approach the game.

I also wonder about the timing of this announcement.

Hasn’t Joe Rugby Public got quite enough to think about, with the Webb Ellis spectacular looming just over the horizon?

Usually that sort of timing is reserved for governments launching some sort of flagwaving exercise to take the public’s awareness away from things that might be happening in the background the pollies might not want them to think about too much - but that wouldn’t happen here, would it?

New names on court A shifting mindset in New Zealand netball has been reflected in the roster make-up of the Kiwi franchises for next year’s ANZ Championship.

The transtasman league office yesterday confirmed the squads for all 10 franchises, with the New Zealand team lists featuring plenty of unfamiliar names. There are more new faces than ever to take the court for the Kiwi teams in 2016. The Mystics and the Pulse have signed four rookies each next season, while the Tactix and Steel have brought in talented teens to fill spots in their already young sides.

Mortgage rates continue tumble

BY CHRISTOPHER ADAMS Mortgage rates are continuing to tumble, with BNZ cutting its one-year fixed rate to 4.35 per cent.

The new rate is the lowest seen in New Zealand since the 1960s, according to specialist finance website interest.co.nz.

BNZ said borrowers must have a minimum of 20 per cent equity, their everyday banking and at least one other BNZ product if they want to take up the offer.

Mortgage rates have been falling as the Reserve Bank has made cuts to the official cash rate, which was reduced by 25 basis points to 3 per cent in July.

With the economic outlook darkening, some economists are picking the OCR to be cut further to 2.5 per cent, back where it was set during the global financial crisis.

High levels of competition among banks are also driving mortgage rates lower. – NZME

Commodity prices adapt to supply and demand

P

art of the process of recovery in the world economy is the recalibrating of demand and supply settings.

In a world where vast populations suffer from a shortage of goods, it seems strange that a major economic problem is over-supply and lack of demand.

Rapid adjustment to the new settings is causing volatility in commodity prices and currencies, causing some markets to over or under correct.

In New Zealand we are feeling this most keenly in falling dairy prices and the falling value of the New Zealand dollar.

The flow-on effects from the movements in milk pricing

may prove to be widespread throughout the economy, from trucking to farm suppliers to retailers. Hopefully this will not be too long-lasting, but we have only to look at the weakness in the Australian economy due to falling resource prices such as iron ore, coal and oil to see what the potential impact might be.

These disruptions are causing volatility in the market value of many companies worldwide.

It is important for investors to be nimble in such times, well diversified and never over-exposed to a single sector.

In the present environment investors may wish to consider investing in companies with either strong defensive or growth prospects, rather than languish holding shares in commodity companies that may take a long time to recover.

Where’s our local flavour?

elf-expression, creativity, and individuality are all traits that Mid Canterbury schools pride themselves on.

As such, the news that prefab buildings will be the preferred option for all new classrooms has principals concerned that school campuses could become as uniform as the clothes their students wear each day.

With Mid Canterbury becoming an increasingly diverse district, schools have made a concerted effort to reflect this in the design of their buildings.

Visiting local schools, you would be hard pressed to find a classroom block that is not adorned with a mural or cultural design.

Each school also has buildings that are in some way distinctly “theirs”, whether it be in the colour of the paint or design of the doors.

The uniqueness of individual schools gives students a sense of pride, as well as a feeling that they belong to a community.

However, with classrooms now being built in a Christchurch factory and shipped out, there are concerns that schools could lose those unique qualities.

That the new buildings can be constructed faster than traditional classrooms is a fact.

As is the Ministry of Education’s assertion that they will meet the latest standards for innovative learning spaces.

However, it is also a fact that schools who see a drop-off in their roll numbers could have their new transportable classrooms shipped away again.

Therein lies the problem.

Why strive to make a building unique to a school’s environment when it could be relocated in six months’ time?

That the new classrooms will be constructed in Christchurch also comes as a blow to local builders, who will no longer be able to throw their hats in the ring for school contracts.

Ministry staff were taken aback that they would be concerned about the effect outsourcing would have, saying the classrooms are still being built in New Zealand.

While true, it will be cold comfort to those hoping to see a local flavour on what are effectively community hubs.

YOUR VIEW Refugees Yesterday, our editorial asked whether we were right not to publish a powerful photograph of a dead toddler, a refugee from Syria.

Here are some of your responses: I think you made the right decision. If you are engaged in any form of social media you will have already been confronted with the heartbreaking image.

I agree, as a parent, it’s not something that my children should have to be confronted with.

I understand the power of the image and what it will do to raise awareness to the tragedy unfolding, but the people that want to see it, already have.

He was someone’s baby, a little boy with a future not a marketing tool. My heart breaks for the family who not only lost him, but another child and their mother.

Prince Charles thought he could blow off some steam to a “trusted friend”. What a “friend”.

The great flag debate and our national symbols

S

o, New Zealand has whittled down the flag submissions to a final four.

The big question now is: fern, fern, fern or koru? If we applied the same logic that gets a “pass” mark in multiple-choice examinations, ticking one of the “fern” options would be a safe bet.

Pass marks aside, there is the small issue of whether any of the options really represent what we, as a nation, stand for.

What is that, exactly? It seems we’re still figuring that one out.

Radio New Zealand’s “make your own flag” template includes such Kiwi icons as kiwifruit, Redband gumboots, and hokey-pokey icecream.

In a somewhat controversial move, both Marmite and Vegemite make the cut. As for my favourite symbol? It has

James Gray’s Fire The Lazar has become a favourite in my office, where heated debates have erupted over the merits of this design versus the sheepand-hokey-pokey-icecream.

The fact that neither of these

Now that Shrek the sheep has lost the title of world’s woolliest ovine to an Australian cousin (named Chris, of all things), we might need to let the Aussies have the sheep symbol as their own. That’s OK though, because New Zealand has many more drawcards.

Take, for example, the South Island. In breaking news this week, the Huffington Post finally discovered that the South Island exists.

That’s right, you are currently living in the midst of a “sprawling, rugged paradise many tourists have shockingly failed to appreciate”.

Readers wishing to realise that appreciation were assured

not only that the island does exist, but that transportation to and from the mythical south is also available: “You can take a flight from North Island or Australia proper.”

If that direct connection doesn’t sell it, I don’t know what will. Lasers, perhaps. It’s always good to have one of those up your sleeve for emergencies: I’ve ordered a T-shirt too, just to be on the safe side.

With a laser-eyed kiwi emblazoned across the front of my clean and green tee, I won’t even have to open my mouth to say “fish and chips” for those Australians to know that I’m in the country on a Special Category Visa.

Instead, they’ll be able to tell at a glance. That’s what national symbols are all about, right?

Trouble at Big M McDonald’s in Japan said yesterday it was investigating an incident involving a customer who was injured by plastic shards found inside a drink, the latest in a string of food contamination scandals.

The company said it sent a notice to 95 other restaurants that offer the kind of green tea latte frappe sold to the woman. Dozens of pieces of plastic were found inside the beverage, a company spokesman said, adding that a plastic instrument used to make the drink may have been the source. “We think this plastic tool slipped into a blender to make the frappe,” he added. McDonald’s Japan unit has been battered by a series of scandals including a human tooth found in some fries.

Aunt Tima Kurdi, speaking outside her home in Vancouver, said she holds herself responsible for sending money used to pay refugee smugglers.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest says the haunting photographs of the 3-year-old refugee washed up on a Turkish shore are a stark reminder of the widespread toll that violence in the Middle East and North Africa has taken on innocent people.

Earnest says he has not yet spoken to President Barack Obama about the photographs, but he’s confident the president has seen them.

“Obviously, there are significant forces that right now are carrying out heinous acts of violence and it’s having a destabilising impact on the region and it’s disrupting the lives of millions of people, and it’s a genuine tragedy,” Earnest said.

He said there are obviously

some refugees from the Gulf region coming to the United States, but he wasn’t aware of any pending policy changes that would allow more.

“There is certainly capacity in Europe to deal with this problem,” Earnest said.

Canada has denied it received a refugee application for the Syrian family that drowned off Europe.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada said yesterday that it received no refugee application from the father of two drowned Syrian boys who have put a devastating human face to the Syrian refugee crisis.

It did, however, receive an application for Abdullah Kurdi’s brother, Mohammed, but said it was incomplete and didn’t meet regulatory requirements for proof of refugee status recognition.

Meanwhile Luxembourg’s foreign minister has criticised the prime minister of Hungary for saying the migrant crisis in Europe was really “a German problem”.

Jean Asselborn told German television station ZDF that “one sometimes has to be ashamed for Viktor Orban.”

Orban’s comments prompted

outrage in Germany, which has seen the biggest number of asylum applications of any European country this year.

Asselborn said he hoped Orban wouldn’t be an example to others. Citing the Hungarian prime minister’s comment that only Christian refugees were welcome in his country, Asselborn said that “if Orban is a Christian, then (former North Korean leader) Kim Il Sung is also a Christian”.

Asselborn is currently in charge of convening the European Union’s emergency meetings on the migrant crisis.

Italy’s coast guard says it is searching the waters off Libya for as many as two dozen people who are unaccounted for after a rubber dinghy partially deflated.

The coast guard said it rescued 91 migrants and recovered one corpse after receiving a distress call Thursday.

Survivors reported they set off from Libya with 115 aboard. If that figure is accurate, 23 people remain unaccounted for.

this year alone, the UN refugee agency says.

The United Nations says municipal authorities in Budapest haven’t accepted the UN refugee agency’s offers of help with the growing crisis there.

An estimated 3000 migrants have been camping outside a Budapest train station, hoping to leave for other European destinations.

Death penalty sought The white man accused of killing nine black churchgoers during a Bible study will face the death penalty, according to court documents. The documents filed yesterday state prosecutors would pursue the death penalty against Dylann Roof, 21, because more than two people were killed, and that others’ lives were put at risk. Prosecutors also said they intended to present evidence on Roof’s mental state, adult and juvenile criminal record and other conduct, as well as his apparent lack of remorse for the killings. Roof also faces federal charges including hate crimes and obstruction of the practice of religion, some of which are also eligible for the death penalty. - AP

Wing is from MH370 French investigators have formally identified a washed-up piece of airplane debris found in July on a remote island in the Indian Ocean as part of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, a Boeing 777 that disappeared more than a year ago.

Investigators have been examining the wing part since it was flown to a French aeronautical research laboratory last month. Malaysian authorities had already declared that the fragment was from the missing jet, but until now French investigators couldn’t say with certainty that it was the case. - AFP

Trapped by polar bears A team of Arctic researchers have become trapped in their Russian base after being surrounded by a pack of aggressive polar bears.

The meteorologists have appealed for help after fights broke out between the animals in their search for food near the Fyodorov weather station. They have struggled to scare them away with flares, have no other weapons and the area is not fenced off.

Holcim is investing more than $100 million to construct two new 30,000 tonne cement terminals in Timaru and Auckland. The terminals will be the first of their kind in New Zealand and will show case ‘best in class’ bulk materials handling and storage.

Based at our Timaru Terminal this hands on role will work as part of a small team who are responsible for the unloading of international shipments and the loading of domestic shipments. When ships are in port, the nature of the work is continuous and will be operated by two 12 hour shifts.

Flexibility to work on the day or the night shift is required.

The team at Timaru will sometimes provide support to the Auckland Terminal unloading operation, and travel to Auckland will be required from time to time.

You will be someone who: • can concentrate to execute machinery operation with precision • demonstrates a positive ‘can do’ and flexible attitude • works well as part of a team • works in a way to ensure your own safety and the safety of others

• has the confidence to make decisions to ensure operational, safety and environmental performance • is comfortable following standard operating procedures.

You will also ideally have: • significant experience in machinery operation • mechanical aptitude • a Class 1 licence with F endorsement (RTW endorsement would be an advantage) • familiarity with ship operations in a port environment would be an advantage.
