Ashburton has earned itself a reputation it may not want – as one of the toughest places in New Zealand to gain your driver’s licence.

And that means Ashburton’s learners looking to pass their restricted test might have better luck if they look elsewhere to sit that driving test.

Figures released for 2015 show we’re the eighth hardest place in the country to move from learner to restricted driver. Statistics show that last year 52

per cent of drivers sitting their restricted test passed, the lowest in Canterbury. We stood out in Canterbury for our tough testing regime, with Sockburn, the next on the country’s toughest centre list coming in at 16th with a pass rate of 55 per cent.

Ashburton also had the lowest rate of full licence test passes, at 55 per cent.

Lower Hutt in Wellington posted the lowest pass rate of the country with just 37 per cent of prospective drivers earning their restricted.

The region with the highest rate was

the North Shore in Auckland at 85 per cent.

Robyn Elston, the Transport Agency’s National Manager, Delivery, said several factors influenced pass rates.

“It’s important to note that a higher or a lower pass rates for an individual site does not necessarily mean that an individual driver is more or less likely to pass the test at that site,” she said.

Candidates keeping quiet

If the community is looking for a lead from Ashburton’s two mayoral aspirants on the location of the district’s new civic centre and library, it will have to wait, say Angus McKay and Donna Favel.

Both may have their private thoughts, but both are wanting to let residents have their say before they’ll show their hands.

Opus Architecture, consultants on the project, has tipped Baring Square East, the site of the Methodist Church and old county building as their top choice, but an online Guardian poll tells a different story, it puts a town centre site in Eastfield as the community’s preferred option.

Also in the mix are the current site opposite Baring Square West and the Balmoral Hall site on Cass and Cameron streets.

For Favel, her thoughts are simple – “pause and take a breath”.

“My first hope would be we look at the wider issue of what is our town centre plan,” she said.

The Methodist Church location was not even on the board during the first round of consultation and fell out of those discussions.

And that could mean the second stage could come up with completely different options, Favel said.

Looking back, during debate on the location of the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre, a suggestion was made by a then councillor that locating the centre at the northern end of Baring Square West would create a civic precinct, with library to the south and administration building to the west, she said.

“While I opposed it, that was the outcome and a civic precinct was achieved. Now less than two years since build completion, we’re discussing relocation of both the library and administration building to the east side of town.”

She suggested Ashburton could follow the lead of Christchurch city.

In 2011 the council hosted a Share

an Idea Expo, where ideas were shared. Messages were left online, questionnaire answers and more than 100 meetings held involving 1000 people. This generated 106,000 ideas from the wider Christchurch community, which are reflected in the draft Central City Plan.

“Why can’t we do that?” she said.

McKay said he had made a commitment to hold back on voicing his opinion on the civic centre location.

“I’ll await what the public feels is right so they can decide without any politics involved,” he said.

“I’m not ducking the issue, I believe it should be made without any side issues coming in to play. And as a council, we have to be independent.”

As the site selection process had moved forward, the council had been involved to the extent that it gave its approval for the Methodist Church site to be included after it was suggested by the community, McKay said.

The project was hugely important for the district and that made it critical the community was involved and had a sense of ownership. The council would be guided by community feedback, he said.

“And that makes it doubly important that people take the time to understand the project and the options and that they provide us with their feedback and their strong views. It’s too important for it to become a political debate at election time. We’ll all have personal preferences but I’ve decided not to make mine known. The final decisions will be decisions for the new council.”

From the outset, McKay said he’d made it clear the debate around site selection had to be a debate for the community.

“And I don’t want to be seen to be leading the community on this.”

The Ashburton Truck Show did not disappoint on Saturday as locals flocked to the Ashburton Showgrounds and helped raise an estimated $10,000 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

Planning for the show began at the start of the year as Rick Harkness, whose father died battling leukaemia, and Steve

Keene, whose mother died battling blood cancer, looked to raise funds with four of their friends for a cause close to their hearts.

Around 150 trucks, as well as a crane capable of lifting 100 tonnes and reaching 70m, shone in perfect conditions for the show, while six food stalls catered for those in attendance.

A truck pull was also held and won by the six-strong team

from Rural Transport.

Harkness said the response has been positive.

“Everyone’s said they’re keen to come back next year,” he said.

“The final figure hasn’t been confirmed yet but it will be around the $10,000 mark.

“We would just like to say thanks the public for the turnout and donations and all of the local business for the support and sponsorship.”

There are also similar differences in pass rates for the computerised testing, despite being randomised and not subject to the same factors as practical tests.

“This again shows that individual practice and preparation is the most important factor influencing whether an individual passes or fails a licence test,” she said.

Ashburton licence tester Allan Baird also gives driving lessons and said there were some areas in Ashburton that posed challenges to drivers.

He said the train line running down the centre of town caused

some people to struggle around the intersections and roundabouts.

He said people also struggled on intersections across the train line where the road was two lanes on one side and it changed to a single lane on the other.

The one consistent factor, however, was that having taken driving lessons did affect your ability to pass, Baird said.

Few interlocks in Ashburton

Since they were introduced in 2012, only two interlock devices have been ordered in Ashburton District Court.

Between 2012, when the devices were introduced, and 2014, there were no orders.

An interlock is an electrical device that requires drivers to blow into it, if the breath test fails the vehicle “locks,” stopping the engine from starting.

Earlier this year Associate

Transport Minister Craig Foss announced interlocking devices will become mandatory.

Anyone convicted of two or more drink driving offences within five years will be required to have an interlocking device installed in their vehicle.

Nationally, in 2015 there were 275 devices ordered by courts, since 2012 there have been a total of 875.

Paul Bradford, a senior solicitor at Russell Moon and Fail in Ashburton, said he had been involved

in a few interlock orders. He said they are a good option for people who are looking at a permanent or long-term disqualification as having the device means they can drive with it after a three-month period, rather than an indefinite ban.

A potential reason for people to not opt for an interlock device could be the cost, especially if they had to drive multiple vehicles.

An interlock device costs the offender between $2400 and $2800 for a 12-month sentence, this cov-

ers driver licencing fees, interlock installation and removal fees, and monthly rental costs.

Drivers with a device installed must also travel to a service centre once a month to have information on driving downloaded.

The closest centre to Ashburton is in Christchurch. However, the Government will provide $4 million in financial assistance to enable offenders to have an interlock device.

Michelle Barrell, of Michelle Barrell and Associates, also said

the cost of the devices put people off.

“People often go for them who would not otherwise be able to apply for a work licence such as those who have had a previous conviction for certain traffic offending inside five years.

“In addition, as work licences are only granted to the minimum extent necessary to avoid hardship, the court often limits their scope in terms of driving hours, times and area able to be driving within,” she said.

Boy rescued from lift A boy dangling off a chairlift at Mt Hutt Ski Area skied off happily after he was rescued.

Ski patrollers were nearby when Jack Clulee, 11, was spotted hanging from a chair on the field’s Summit Six lift midmorning on Saturday.

They quickly pulled free a safety mat protecting a lift tower and he fell onto it.

“The little fella just popped off and went back into the lift queue to go skiing,” says James Urquhart, the ski area’s general manager of operations.

The chair was about 10m from the ground and the boy was hanging under it, being held by his arms by his father and uncle on the chair.

“Our senior patroller, John, was the person who thought on his feet. He just said this is what we are going to do, and he took ownership, and grabbed the tower pad and said everyone grab a corner.

“The kid just popped onto the mat and skied off again.”

Mr Urquart said it was a reminder of what could happen when not lowering down the safety bar on a chairlift.

The Summit Six is the ski area’s main lift.

Members of the family said Jack would have a great story to tell at school on Monday.

Jack tried to sit down too early, and slipped, missing the chair, the Press reports.

Rehearsals into final weeks

The Big Little Theatre Company’s production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe promises to wow the crowd with “groundbreaking” digital visual effects.

The show, directed by Georgie Sivier and Matt Van den Yessell, started rehearsals in June and president of the Big Little Theatre Company, Sue Farr, said as show time draws closer, the rehearsals are become more frequent.

“We were rehearsing three times a week but now that opening night is getting closer, we are bumping it up a little bit,” she said.

There are 45 young actors involved in the show, aged from six to 16 years and Farr said most of the performers’ parents have got involved.

“The parents have made all of the props, like the puppets and things like that.

Some of the characters will be bigger than life, thanks to the efforts of the parents, creating puppets of Mr and Mrs Beaver and the Ice Giant.

“It’s great to see the parents really getting behind their kids and getting involved,” she said.

Farr said the theatre have challenged themselves this year by moving away from last year’s performance of Blood Brothers.

Methven bookshop forced to close its doors Closing the doors on your business is a tough call, but that’s what Methven man Peter Gerard says he’s been forced to do with the Methven Bookshop.

He’s tried to sell the business, but said after a string of disappointments where potential buyers did not translate into sales, Gerard said he’d reached the

point where shutting the doors was his only option.

The bookshop has been part of the Methven retail scene for many years and has had several long-term owners over its lifetime, but four years down the track, Gerard said he had to make the hard call. It was time to sell, but no buyers were around.

“We’ve done our best to sell it, but we closed the doors and we know people will be disappointed because we’ve had some very loyal customers,” he said.

With a few gaps in Methven’s retail heart already, Gerard said it was difficult making a decision that would see one more shop sitting empty.

The community needed a good range of retailers, but it also needed a bit of a shot in the arm, Gerard said.

He believes that the hot pools complex planned for the town will provide that new life.

For Gerard, however, the wait for this to happen was just too long.

Former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark may be struggling in her campaign to become the next secretary-general of the United Nations, but the organisation’s staff have given her their backing. She’s come out as the preferred candidate for the UN’s top job in a poll of staffers.

The survey from Avaaz asked 1000 staff at the UN to name their top three candidates for secretarygeneral, with Ms Clark getting 439 mentions, ahead of Portugal’s Antonio Guterres on 381 and Costa Rican diplomat Christiana Figueres on 340, the Huffington Post reports.

Rain doing damage Strong winds that caused some damage in Dunedin are moving north ahead of a front that’ll dump heavy rain, mostly in the west. The culprit is a low pressure system from Sydney that’s deepening in the Tasman Sea, says Weatherwatch.co.nz.

New life sought for clubrooms

Looking for love and a new owner, the Mayfield Rugby Club rooms is ready for a new life.

New South Street traffic lights Ashburton is about to get another set of traffic lights, but they won’t be at either of the two sites that are top of the community’s list.

The NZ Transport Agency has awarded a contract for traffic lights to be installed at the intersection of South Street and East Street as part of the construction of a new Countdown supermarket by Progressive Enterprises.

Traffic signals at the intersection were part of the conditions imposed on the supermarket build and they will be funded

by Progressive.

Work on the $1 million project will start shortly and is programmed for completion

by Christmas.

Opus consultants have designed the in-

tersection in accordance with Transport Agency and Ashburton District Council standards and consent conditions, including landscaping features.

The pavement at the intersection is being completely rebuilt with new surfacing.

The contract has been let to City Care Ltd and there will be minor traffic delays during construction in coming weeks.

For several years the Ashburton community has been pushing for traffic signals in Tinwald.

The Ashburton District Council has also been working to have lights installed at the intersection of Walnut Avenue with East and West streets, but this project continues to be moved down the NZTA priority list.

Once it was a home for the Mayfield RSA, then it became base camp for the Mayfield Rugby Club and now the solid building on the outskirts of the rural village is about to have another new life.

With the Mayfield and Hinds rugby clubs now well combined under the Southern banner, games were still played regularly on the village’s rugby fields but the rooms no longer met the club’s needs, spokesman Wayne Schmack said.

“We’d like to be using it, but it’s just too far from the grounds and it’s too small now to fit everyone in,” he said.

The clubrooms haven’t been used by players for at least l2 months and are only opened up every second month for committee meetings.

While there was still plenty of rugby played at Mayfield by Southern teams across all ages, when it came to after match functions, almost by default the Mayfield Tavern has become the venue of choice.

That meant the clubrooms had become redundant, but the build-

ing was too good to leave unused, Schmack said.

There is still one hurdle to clear before the property can be sold, however.

Because the building is on a 1000 square metre site in the residential D zone (minimum lot size 4000 square metres), an application has been lodged for a resource consent. This would not be needed if its use remained as clubrooms.

A sale might be in the building’s future, but the money that sale generates won’t be leaving town, Schmack said.

“All the funds will end up in something like a trust, the money will be set aside for the Mayfield area so we can help with anything that might come up in the future.”

For selling agent Chris Murdoch, taking a rugby clubrooms to the market is a new experience, but it’s one he’s confident will have a happy ending.

He says the building is as solid as any in Mayfield and was probably built around 1960. It’s future could easily be as a family home, Murdoch said.

The building has a government valuation of $140,000.

oe and Judy Barker’s 1936 Wolseley Series II was manufactured so quickly, it doesn’t have a boot door, which is probably an advantage considering it was once used as a police car.

The 1936 Wolseley Series II Super Six Saloon was manufactured in England and the Barkers’ Series II is one of 3886 that were made.

“It’s one of five in the world that are still roadworthy, and one of only two in New Zealand. The other one is actually in Barrhill,” Joe said.

Joe has fitted the car with new indicators, because the car is only fitted with the original trafficators, which popped out from the side of the car in between the front and back doors.

“We had to put on real indicators because no one really knows what the trafficators are for,” Joe said.

Under the hood, the Series II has a 3500cc engine, which reaches 60 miles an hour in 196 seconds, which according to Joe, is pretty zippy for a car in 1936, and

why they were used as police cars.

Judy said the pair of them have travelled extensively in their Series II and said although they haven’t been out much recently, they are excited to get back into the swing of travelling around.

Joe said the car is in the same class as Armstrong Siddeleys and the cars in the tier up are Bentleys.

The other similarity between the Siddeley and the Series II are the suicide doors, which open the opposite way to the doors on modern cars.

The suicide doors come in handy when you want to access the back of the car, due to the lack of a boot door.

Joe and Judy agree that one of the best trips they have made in the Series II was when they drove the Molesworth Road in the Marlborough Sounds.

They have also been to a few rallies in the Series II, including one in Greymouth and the Blossom Festival Rally in Central Otago.

“We just enjoy getting to drive it around,” Judy said.

■ ■ Two Ashburtonians will be returning home for a performance with the Ashburton Musical Club on September 10.

Caitlin Young (nee Andrew) and Daniel Hitchens will be performing with the Musical Club for their show Classical to Jazz and Caitlin said she and Daniel want to give a special something back to the Ashburton community. Caitlin has a BMus in Jazz Vocal Performance and a post-

graduate diploma in secondary music and performing arts.

She has been teaching at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School in Whitby, Wellington for almost three years. She was also teaching private singing and piano lessons around secondary schools in Wellington before landing her position at Samuel Marsden.

Daniel completed his degree at the Jazz School in Christchurch and has since recorded an EP,

flown to Hollywood to promote and perform his EP and toured New Zealand with Stevie Tonks.

He is currently in a jazz quartet called The Madras Jazz Quartet which has performed at local events and functions across New Zealand. Daniel has a bachelor in musical arts (jazz guitar.)

Joining them on stage is pianist and harpist Joy Sun, who is currently studying harp performance at the NZ School of Mu-

sic with New Zealand Symphony Orchestra principle harpist Carolyn Mills. She is also a paper in chamber music where she plays piano and a course in conducting. Outside of her studies, Joy is taking piano lessons from Richard Mapp.

Caitlin, Daniel and Joy will be performing at the Ashburton Musical Club’s Classical to Jazz show at the Sinclair Centre on September 10 at 7.30pm.

Beatlemania set to hit Ashburton International hit tribute Beatlemania On Tour is returning to New Zealand this September and October with the second phase of their 2016 national tour.

Having already visited the North Island in May, the production will be performing the bulk of their spring dates across the South Island, with just a few selected dates in the North Island.

Bringing a new Australian cast of Cameron Charters (as Paul McCartney), Zac Coombs (as John

Lennon), Brent McMullen (as George Harrison) and Ben Harper (as Ringo), fans can expect a fresh experience with state-ofthe-art updates to production and lighting plus revamps to the show’s huge collection of reproduction Beatles costuming.

All of the Beatles’ biggest and most treasured hits – 40 songs in total, including Can’t Buy Me Love, Sergeant Peppers, Lonely Hearts Club Band, Yellow Submarine and Hey Jude – will be

performed live, in their original key and on replica Beatles instruments.

“There is so much detail to get right for a show of this calibre; aside from getting the music spot-on we’re expected to nail the characters, voices, little movements.

“It’s a lot of work but it’s worth it when you see the end result and know that real Beatles’ fans will appreciate it,” says Charters, who even went so far as to teach him-

self to play the bass left-handed for his role as Paul McCartney.

With previous sold-out shows across the US, Canada, Dubai, Hong Kong, Australia and South Africa under its belt, this production is looking to uphold its reputation as one of the world’s best Beatles tributes and producers are confident it will do just that.

Beatlemania On Tour will be at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on October 7 at 8pm.

Otago student’s pencil drawing up for awards It was a case of being in the right place at the right time.

Otago student Ashleigh McDonald, 14, was in a Year 9 digital technology class when Lily Van Buskirk, 18, came from the art studio next door, looking for someone to photograph and then draw as part of her Year 13 visual arts class.

Ashleigh was one of several pupils that Lily photographed for her art work portfolio.

But there was something about the photo of Ashleigh that

prompted Lily to pick up a pencil and turn it into a portrait.

Now that portrait has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious 2016 Wallace Secondary Schools’ Art Awards.

“I think her gaze in the photo is interesting. There’s something about the way she can hold a scene in the photograph, and that translates well to the drawing.

“Her eyes tell some unknown story. I think you can truly see the wisdom in her.

“It’s about looking at schools,

especially schools like Columba, which have such a strong character, and the aspects of Columba that went into building my character – looking at what it means to be a part of tradition and part of a school that has so much history, and what that means to me.

“It’s all encapsulated within this portrait.”

Ashleigh was delighted with the portrait.

“It’s freaky how much it looks like me. It’s like a black and white photo.”

Judges in the 2016 Wallace Secondary Schools’ Art Awards also found the pencil drawing to be freakily good.

More than 500 entries were received this year, and Lily’s artwork was among 38 from across the country (one of three from across the South Island), to be selected for the finals of the prestigious awards.

The awards ceremony will take place in Auckland on September 12, and Lily’s artwork will be exhibited at the TSB Bank Wallace

Arts Centre until November 6.

It is not the first time Lily has had success with her artwork.

Last year she received an NZQA Scholarship in Visual Art for a painting she did in Year 12 – a qualification that is traditionally achieved by Year 13 pupils.

Lily said she was excited to have reached the final of the competition.

“I have no idea what they are looking for or what they want.

But I’m looking forward to seeing what happens.”

All insurance clients are not the same Sue Newman

otorists around the country will be wailing and gnashing their teeth over plans by insurance giant IAG to raise excesses on policies and no one should blame us; there are better cash raising options.

Fact, no one likes paying insurance premiums.

Fact, premiums are already too high.

Fact, more of us than ever before are crashing our cars and making claims.

But the other fact is that many, many motorists are not crashing cars and making claims. They have an exemplary record as far as their insurer is concerned so if any costs need to rise, they certainly shouldn’t be the ones doing the paying.

What’s planned is an increase in excesses on all policies and while that might be a simple solution to the rising number of payouts to crashing drivers, it spreads the debt load and that’s just not right.

The insurer has come up with a cost recovery scheme that is blatantly unfair. Why should motorists who have a clean record pay more? A fairer regime is for policy excesses to be the same until a claim is made. First claim, up the excess, second claim it rises again.

If a motorist goes five years without making another claim, the excess reverts back to the original – a bit more paper work for the insurer, but it’s a whole lot fairer to the policy holder.

The insurer is claiming that upping the excess is better than raising premiums across the board. True, but for the majority of motorists who might make a claim once every 10 years it’s unfair if they’re hit with the same excess as a motorist who’s on the regular claims list.

Justifying the excess increase by saying a similar change was made in home insurance a couple of years ago doesn’t make it right. The same rational of raising the excess according to the number of claims could apply here too.

Insurance costs are significant for anyone who owns anything, but the cost of not having insurance is much higher. And yes, the mounting number of claims across the board must be eating into insurers’ profitability, but making the books balance shouldn’t happen at the expense of the careful motorist or home owner.

ecent reports have confirmed that the winter here in Canterbury this year has been warmer and drier than usual. I know this is something that many people have commented on when I have been out and about around the region.

Many farmers are concerned at the low rainfall and what this will mean as we head into spring.

Whether this particularly mild winter is due to climate change or is a result of local cyclical conditions is a matter for the weather experts to debate. What we do know however is that scientists agree that our Earth’s climate is changing and global emissions are a significant factor in this change.

The Government is taking the issue of climate change seriously which is why we have set an ambitious goal for New Zealand to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030.

This will require a massive effort across all sectors of society from local and central government, through to businesses, iwi and communities.

We have also announced our intention to ratify the Paris agreement on climate change before the UN’s Framework Convention on Climate Change conference in November this year.

Ratifying this year will formalise New Zealand’s commitment to addressing climate change and help support worldwide momentum to lowering global emissions.

The Paris agreement was final-

ised in December last year, when 180 countries that contribute 99 per cent of global emissions set reduced emissions targets.

Ratifying the agreement early gives our support to the global momentum to implement the agreement and helps ensure we have a strong voice at the table as the details of the agreement are negotiated.

Ratifying will also build on the solid work already being done by New Zealanders to reduce our emissions.

China and the US, who are jointly responsible for just under 40 per cent of global emissions, have indicated they will ratify this year, as have Australia and Canada.

The Government already has a number of initiatives under way as part of our work programme to address climate change. These actions include: • Reviewing and strengthening the Emissions Trading Scheme to

ensure it is fit for purpose and is encouraging emissions reductions and tree planting; • Investing millions each year to fund agriculture research to help the primary sector become more efficient and less emissions-intensive; • Spending a record $1.2 billion over three years on public transport and encouraging the uptake of electric vehicles; • Increasing the amount of electricity that comes from renewable energy from 80 per cent currently to 90 per cent; and • Developing measures on energy and fuel efficiency.

To help ensure we’re on the right track to reduce emissions and meet our ambitious target, we are also setting up three technical advisory groups covering adaptation, biological emissions, and forestry.

This is a big global issue and it is important that we get our response right.

Fast-track UK-US trade deal quashed US President Barack Obama offered Britain little hope of a fast-track post-Brexit trade deal yesterday, but said he would work to ensure the economic relationship between the two does not unravel after the British vote to leave the European Union.

Obama met with British Prime Minister Theresa May at the start of a G20 summit in China as Britain embarks on the long process of reinventing itself as an independent trading nation following the shock June EU referendum outcome.

Obama, who in April used a visit to London to tell Britain it would be at the back of the queue for a trade deal if it left the EU, met with May for the first time since she became prime minister to discuss Brexit and other global challenges.

He offered May reassurance that Britain’s closest political, commercial and

military ally would stand by her, but did not shrink away from his stance that Brexit was a mistake and that London would not be able to jump the queue to arrange a bilateral deal.

“It is absolutely true that I believed pre-Brexit vote, and continued to believe post-Brexit vote, that the world benefited enormously from the United Kingdom’s participation in the EU,” he said.

“First things first – the first task (for Britain) is going to be figuring out what Brexit means with respect to Europe, and our first task is making sure we get, first, TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) done and also that we move forward on the TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) negotiations in which we’ve invested a lot of time and effort.”

TTIP is a stalled US-EU trade deal, while

TPP is Obama’s signature Asian trade deal.

Both Obama and May said they would try to minimise the impact of Brexit, stressed the closeness of their relations and expressed a desire to strengthen those ties wherever possible.

“What I committed to Theresa is that we will consult closely with her as she and her government move forward with Brexit negotiations to ensure that we don’t see adverse effects in the trade and commercial relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom,” Obama said.

“We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that the consequences of the decision don’t end up unravelling what is already a very strong and robust economic relationship,” he said.

Bindi pays tribute to dad Steve Irwin Steve Irwin was one of Australia’s most charismatic and colourful sons.

But his untimely death after being struck by a stingray barb in waters off far north Queensland also robbed a family of a beloved father.

“You’ll be my hero for my entire existence. I love you more than words can describe,” his now-18-year-old daughter Bindi posted on Instagram on Sunday.

She accompanied her touching tribute with a picture of Steve, decked out in his trademark khaki, hoisting his infant daughter proudly in one hand.

Her words echoed the speech made a decade earlier, when she spoke movingly about her late father at a memorial service at Australia Zoo. “My Daddy was my hero – he was always there for me when I needed him,” the then eight-year-old Bindi said.

“He listened to me and taught me so many things but most of all he was fun.”

Then-prime minister John Howard described Irwin’s sudden and freakish death as a “huge loss” to Australia as tributes flowed in from around the world.

yesterday coincided with Father’s Day. Australia Zoo held a Father’s Day event but Bindi, her brother Robert and their mother Terri weren’t expected to make an appearance.

The trio would not be at the wildlife park and were keeping their movements private on the day, an Australia Zoo spokeswoman said.

Bob Irwin has also chosen not to speak publicly about how he’ll mark the 10th anniversary of his son’s death.

Earlier, he announced he had penned a memoir, which contains a touching letter Steve wrote to his parents 12 years before he died.

The letter turned up while the 77-yearold was researching for the book The Last Crocodile Hunter: A Father and Son Legacy, due for release in October.

“At 32, I am finally starting to figure it out. In good times and in bad, you were there. Your strength and endurance to raise me will not go unrewarded. My love for you is my strength!” Irwin wrote in the letter.

Crowded House have been announced as the next musical superstars to be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

It’s a fitting year to celebrate the achievements of the Australian/New Zealand band who released their selftitled debut album 30 years ago, the same year the ARIA Awards were born.

The band have won 13 ARIA awards over their career. Their first was in 1987 for Best Video for Don’t Dream It’s Over, which also won Song of the Year. That year they also won the award for Best New Talent.

Paul splits with husband Television personality Suzanne Paul says she has split up with her husband of more than a decade, Duncan Wilson, because his ‘meltdowns’ are becoming too much for them both. Speaking to the Woman’s Weekly, Paul said while she still loves her husband, they need to separate so he can “be true to himself”.

Wilson has been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome and though he is high-functioning, he often has episodes where he’ll start “acting erratically” and become obsessive, leading into full-on meltdowns. The pair describe the latest episode as “catastrophic” - he stopped eating, became depressed and switched between working frantically and sleeping for long periods of time.

Bono meets Boko Haram U2 singer and African activist Bono says he came face-to-face with the terrorism of Boko Haram Islamic extremists on a recent trip to Nigeria. “I have to admit I was not prepared to see a nine-year-old child bride,” the Irish singer said. The girl was surrounded by other child brides, the singer recounted. “At that moment I knew I had come face-to-face with Boko Haram.” Boko Haram poses an ongoing threat to communities in the northeast of Nigeria and has also launched offensives in neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon. The group’s goal is to enforce a strict interpretation of Islamic law, known as sharia. In 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped 276 girls and young women from their school dormitory in the north-eastern village of Chibok.

Spooked at the Stanley Hotel The historic Stanley Hotel in Colorado inspired author Stephen King to pen his novel The Shining.

I

n 1974, a young author and his wife checked into the Stanley Hotel, a historic hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. The pair were the only guests that night, as the hotel was about to close for the winter. During his stay, the isolation and eerie nature of the hotel inspired the author to write his next novel.

That author was Stephen King and the novel was The Shining.

A 1980 film adaptation by director Stanley Kubrick catapulted the story of a family stranded in an isolated hotel during a harsh winter into the pantheon of pop culture infamy.

Over the years, amid the collective conscious memories of bloody elevators, ghostly twin girls and a cry of “Here’s Johnny” breaking through the bathroom door, the Stanley Hotel’s role in the saga has been largely forgotten.

Just not by the Stanley Hotel.

The first thing that strikes me about the Stanley is just how isolated it isn’t. While it backs onto the amazing vista of the Rocky Mountains, the Stanley’s front porch provides a view of the Estes

Colorado’s historic Stanley Hotel claims to be haunted, and even runs a nightly ghost tour. Michael Wayne visited to see if it lived up to its reputation.

Park McDonalds.

Oh well: if the restaurant here sucks, at least I have options.

It’s not an axe-wielding Jack Nicholson or phantom caretaker who checks me in at reception, but instead a bubbly young woman who can’t wait to give me my official Stanley Hotel token, which is good to the value of $5 in the gift shop.

It feels heavy; heavier than five postcards, at least. I’d just keep the coin if I were you, she suggests.

Behind her hang keys to each of the Stanley’s 140 rooms. The only one that stands out is the key to room 217 - the room that features as a hotbed for supernatural evil in King’s novel.

“Your room will be...”

She’s done this a million times before, and has become a master of suspense; the Stephen King of key vendors.

“...222.”

Damn. She hands me a keycard; the physical key remains on the wall - just for show, like so much else at the Stanley.

Whether or not room 217 still harbours supernatural spirits, I’ll never know. But a special ghost adventure package, including a glow-in-the-dark ghost toy, the overnight loan of an EMF metre that measures surrounding electromagnetic fields, and the promise that Stephen King himself stayed in the room - is available for a few dollars more (glad I saved that token).

In the long, drab hallway leading to room 222, I encounter a pair of girls in 19th-century dress and goth make-up staring at me. I get closer, and they keep staring, unmoving. But then their make-up artist shows up to touch up their cheekbones, spoiling the effect.

The Stanley Hotel claims to be haunted, and even runs a nightly ghost tour. Tonight, the tour is sold out, so any ghosts I encounter will have to be found off the beaten track.

I find no ghosts on the ground floor, which features a mini-museum showcasing the movies that have been filmed at the Stanley.

I say mini because there are only two: a 1997 TV mini-series of The Shining, and the somewhat scarier Dumb and Dumber (1994).

I find no ghosts in the Cascades Restaurant, unless you count the signed glossies of celebrity guests adorning the walls. Stanley Kubrick’s picture is there, but it’s not signed.

I find no ghosts at the whisky bar - but plenty of spirits. It’s also haunted by a very loud man with a very annoying laugh, and I can only stay for about ten minutes before I’m driven back to my

room. And I find no ghosts in my room. But I do find that the TV features a channel that screens The Shining 24 hours a day. Curiously, it’s the Stanley Kubrick film, and not the 1997 version shot in the Stanley itself.

During the night, my alarm goes off at about 3am. I slap the snooze button.

At 4am, it goes off again. This time, I unplug it.

At 4:30, it goes off again.

Suddenly, I feel compelled to write.

Cleary man for the job

A

Herald on Sunday headline claimed the Warriors face a coaching conun-

drum.

I beg to differ.

If Ivan Cleary is available, bring him back.

Easy choice, people.

And according to the HoS, Cleary – who has made grand finals as a coach and player at the Warriors – sees himself as a career coach, and loved his time in Auckland.

This sounds like a declaration of availability without actually saying so, probably in deference to the current coach.

Wild prediction: Cleary – who in actors’ parlance is between coaching jobs – will lead the Warriors next year.

Cleary v current coach Andrew McFadden is not a fair fight.

Cleary’s record in Auckland is vastly superior.

In contrast McFadden’s team have gone backwards, and he has no proven track record.

The defence has been awful in 2016.

The attack was uninspired and one dimensional.

Key players, led by Ben Matulino and Issac Luke, were way below their best.

Rising star Tui Lolohea is confused and gun-shy.

Another rising star, David Fusitua, has been shifted around too many positions.

Nobody is in career best form, although the redoubtable Thomas Leuluai has been a rock and young forward Sam “Long Run Up” Lisone gives it everything.

There are a few rumours flying around out there, which actually

Ivan Cleary left the Warriors in 2011 under a cloud of acrimony. is the way it should be.

One of them is that the Warriors still desire the Melbourne coaching genius – and he really is a genius – Craig Bellamy.

Bellamy could complicate matters.

Otherwise, it should be Cleary in, McFadden out.

The 24-36 loss against the Wests Tigers last week was the Warriors coaching eureka moment – McFadden hasn’t got what it takes for now.

Everything was on the line.

The Tigers came to town in a shaky state, with their best attacking player James Tedesco missing.

They were there for the taking.

The Tigers scored 36 points, going away at the end.

All it took was a few things to go against the Warriors, and they kind of gave up.

The desperation of the situation did not translate onto the field, which says that the players don’t know where to channel

their energies under McFadden.

There is something very, very wrong with McFadden’s Warriors no matter what players like Ryan Hoffman and Jacob Lillyman say in support of the coach.

To get the platitudes out of the way, McFadden appears to be a man of integrity and honour.

But he is in a long list of those baffled by the peculiar problems in Auckland, the main ones being an uncompetitive junior/ club system compared to Australia and a Warriors history of management instability.

Cleary got close to unravelling the mystery, but left with a hint of acrimony in the air before the job was really done.

If there were any lingering problems between Cleary and the Warriors, the Herald on Sunday story can be seen as an olive branch, a clearing of the way for his return.

Cleary’s Warriors consistently made the top eight and one even made a grand final, if

slightly fortuitously.

His win ratio is around 50 per cent.

By Warriors standards, this is a roaring success.

At 45, Cleary is still a young coach.

Outwardly laconic, he still has a fire in the belly for NRL coaching left smouldering since being cruelly cut by his Penrith mentor Phil Gould after the 2015 season (Cleary’s Panthers finished 4th and 11th).

In contrast, McFadden’s Warriors have fallen apart, and the men who run the club – Eric Watson and Jim Doyle – won’t be amused.

They may even be embarrassed, particularly after losing eight straight at the end of 2015.

This was supposed to be a breakthrough year and Watson was confident: “We are very close” is how he put it to me before the season started, when I accepted his topeight-or-not wager following my prediction the club would fail yet again.

One of the key indicators to me had been the sight of Issac Luke turning up out of condition for a pre-season trial.

That was a dreadful sign from a big signing, a player who was there to kick-start a new era.

Succumbing to an impetuous side – fortunately I hardly ever gamble – I let the loyal owner have ridiculously favourable odds involving his favourite wine.

Wonder what odds he’d give on a Cleary return right now.

Most importantly, does Watson hold any ill-feelings towards Cleary over the way he left after the 2011 season?

Storm set their sights on reigning premiers Melbourne won’t take time to savour the NRL minor premiership with their attention turning to their qualifying final against defending champions North Queensland.

The Storm were at their ruthless best against the Cronulla, winning 26-6, to claim the minor premiership in the final round of the regular competition.

Captain Cameron Smith said winning the JJ Giltinan Shield meant a lot to his team, but realised it would be quickly forgotten with the finals

starting next weekend.

The Storm will host the Cowboys at AAMI Park – the same venue where North Queensland inflicted a painful 32-12 loss in the preliminary final last year to end Melbourne’s title aspirations.

The Storm have won both their clashes this year but Smith said finals were a different story.

“This is finals and these guys are the reigning premiers so they know how to play these big games,” Smith said.

“In recent years they’ve had

a pretty good record down in Melbourne and when you win a competition you don’t fear any team or any venue and we’re aware of that.

“But at the end of the day this is our home ground and we’ve got a pretty good record and our goal will be to keep that intact.”

The winner of the StormCowboys final will have week two off and move straight through to the preliminary final.

Tyson Frizell will be available for Kangaroos Four Nations selection despite missing St George Illawarra’s final NRL match this season due to a knee injury. NSW star Frizell missed the win over Newcastle with a slight meniscus tear. The hard-running back-rower has enjoyed a breakout year with his performances for NSW and will likely be among the first named today in Australia’s train-on squad.

Dragons physio Tony Ayoub said after the Dragons win that the club erred on the side of caution in leaving Frizell out.

Scott may be fit North Queensland coach Paul Green has kept his cards close to his chest when asked about the chances of Matt Scott playing in next weekend’s NRL final against Melbourne.

The Cowboys secured a blockbuster qualifying final against the Storm with a 32-16 win over Gold Coast. Victory came without rep prop Scott, who missed the clash with the Titans due to a broken finger. The 31-year-old is also battling a bulging disc in his back but Green was revealing nothing when asked if he would be fit to face the minor premiers.

Graham cleared Canterbury’s James Graham is free to line up in next week’s elimination final against Penrith after being cleared of a kicking charge by the NRL match review committee.

Graham escaped charge for an ugly looking incident in which he almost came to blows with English team-mate Sam Burgess in the Bulldogs’ loss to South Sydney on Friday. After Burgess came in late to hit Graham, the Bulldogs skipper lashed out with a leg. He avoided a charge because he did not make contact with Burgess.

Ennis free to play Cronulla hooker Michael Ennis is free to play in their NRL qualifying final against Canberra after he escaped any charge for his hit on Melbourne five-eighth Blake Green.

Ennis took out Green in the lead-up to Cheyse Blair’s try in the Storm’s 26-6 victory at AAMI Park. Ennis floored Green with what appeared to be a marginally late shoulder charge after he had passed the football.

Heartbreak for Hammers

Mid Canterbury fell to a last-gasp 34-32 defeat against Buller on game day two of the Heartland Championship in Westport on Saturday.

The Hammers were out to make it two from two while Buller were hoping to bounce back from their narrow loss to South Canterbury a week earlier, and they did just that.

Former Heartland Player of the Year James Lash let fly from a perfectly weighted drop goal in the 80th minute to secure his side’s first win of the campaign.

After poor starts in their preseason clash against South Canterbury and their opening Heartland encounter against North Otago, Mid Canterbury began with plenty of urgency at Victoria Square.

A try from lock Logan Bonnington put the Hammers’ first points on the board in the fifth minute before first five Jarred Percival neatly slotted his conversion.

Percival then added his third try of the season after posting a double last weekend and struck his conversion to put Mid Canterbury 16-0 ahead inside 12 minutes, but they would be the last points of the first forty for the green and golds.

Buller set about reining their 2014 final tormentors in as first five Lash touched down on the quarter-hour mark before converting to half the deficit.

Buller drew first blood in the second stanza with wing Joshua Tuidriva dotting down to put his

side ahead for the first time and Lash was on target again.

Mid Canterbury were quick to return fire through Irish prop Mike Lynch, who added his second try in as many weeks, and Percival converted to make it 2424.

Buller began to pile on the pressure and were rewarded for

their efforts when loose forward Dan Hytongue secured the bonus point with a fourth try.

Lash maintained his 100 per cent record with the boot as Buller held an eight point lead with time ebbing away.

Mid Canterbury continued to battle and found an opening through Timoci Nabekeke, who touched down for his side’s last try of the afternoon as he had against the Old Golds a week earlier.

Percival added two more points to his personal haul from the conversion to level the score again at 32-32, but the drama wasn’t about to end there.

In the closing seconds of what had been a perfect advertisement for Heartland rugby, Lash’s effort from a drop goal took a deflection before floating over the posts to secure Buller’s first win of the season.

Mid Canterbury will now hope to return to winning form when they welcome Wairarapa Bush to the Ashburton Showgrounds next Saturday.

All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster has put his hand up to succeed Steve Hansen as head coach of the world champions.

Hansen, who coached the All Blacks to a second successive World Cup win last year, signed a contract extension in August, which will have him in charge through to the 2019 tournament in Japan.

But former Waikato Chiefs stalwart Foster was open about his designs on the top job when it eventually becomes vacant.

Asked if he saw himself as an All Blacks head coach, Foster told Newstalk ZB: “I do from an ambition side, and I guess that’s part of the whole thought process for me.

“I love what I do.

“I love this group and it’s just a matter of thinking out, first and foremost, I want to do the best job I can with the role I’ve got right now, and secondly what do I need to do to make sure I can present myself and put my hand up and say I want to be a head coach for the All Blacks.

“That’s part of the next conversation, really, to see what can I do in order do that.

“Do you need to go somewhere else to do that or can you do it by staying within?

“That’s all part of a conversation that’s a little bit ongoing at the moment.”

Foster has precedent on his side, with Hansen stepping up to the head role after the 2011 World Cup after being an assistant coach to Graham Henry for seven years.

A formidable side under Henry, the All Blacks have only grown more dominant during Hansen’s tenure.

“There’s a strong logic to that (succession) and it’s one that’s worked well for the All Blacks,” said Foster, seen as one of New Zealand’s finest players to never earn an international cap.

“But to be the head coach of the All Blacks you’ve got to be the right person and the best person should get that job, whether it’s from inside or outside.

“I understand that.”

Foster’s contract expires in 2017 after the British and Irish Lions tour.

The All Blacks, who thrashed Australia in their opening two matches of the Rugby Championship, host Argentina next Saturday.

Cantabs pile on the points

By Niall aNdersoN There are few teams who can score 50 points and have a right to be disappointed, but Canterbury fit the bill.

A 52-34 victory over Northland provided their seemingly customary five points but conceding their biggest points haul since 2014 will have concerned coach Scott Robertson.

It hardly matters on the points table, which has Canterbury with a perfect 15 points through three clashes to top the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership.

Having swept aside Premiership semi-final contenders in Auckland and Tasman, their clash in Whangarei was always tipped to be lop-sided, despite Northland’s improvement after their horror winless season in 2015.

Northland have notched bonus points in close losing efforts against Otago and Manawatu, and put in a solid showing against Auckland.

Yet, their meeting with Canterbury was their third game in eight days, leading the bookmakers to install Canterbury as 30 point favourites.

Canterbury’s riches were shown in their pre-match rotation.

While young talents Jordie Barrett and Richie Mo’unga came off the bench, they managed to use services of Luke Romano, Ryan Crotty and

Codie Taylor to create potency at every position.

A romp looked on the cards as Canterbury scored three times in the first seven minutes, with Northland’s only touch of the ball being to kickoff into the hands of the Canterbury onslaught.

Running at the line at speed and stretching Northland’s defence, Canterbury racked up 233 metres before Northland gained 10, finding overlaps in the corners with simple set moves as their wingers dotted down.

However, Northland hung tough as the game slowed down and the deficit reached single digits, with lock Josh Goodhue showing a mix of power and anticipation to score a remarkable hat-trick.

Canterbury were still crossing at regular intervals in the contest in which 12 tries were scored, meaning Northland never really threatened an upset for the ages.

But, they snared another bonus point and displayed great promise to snap their 16-game losing streak this season.

Neil Wagner is threatening Sir Richard Hadlee’s record as the fastest New Zealand bowler to 100 test wickets.

Take a moment to breathe that in.

Of all those who have marked out a run-up for this country in 86 years of tests, Wagner could be fastest to the milestone.

Consequently, the 30-year-old might threaten Tim Southee and Trent Boult for their frontline roles.

Wagner has 94 wickets from 23 tests.

Hadlee reached a century of dismissals in his 25th.

To add further context, Bruce Taylor completed the feat in 27 tests; Danny Morrison, Daniel Vettori, Southee and Boult took 29.

The only recent bowler to loom into the reckoning for Hadlee’s mark was Shane Bond.

He reached 87 wickets in 18 tests before retiring.

Statistics should never be a definitive guide to someone’s team contribution, given the variables at play in a cricket team.

However, the fact Wagner has taken a wicket in each of his tests, and only missed collecting in five of 43 innings, indicates his value.

Whether that is enough to be retained in the starting XI for three tests in spin-friendly India will be an intriguing call.

Argentina will arrive in New Zealand for their Rugby Championship test against the All Blacks in Hamilton with hope rather than great expectation. They will arrive minus two of their best players due to injury – lock Tomas Lavanini and wing Manuel Montero – and with the knowledge they have never beaten the All Blacks. What they do have, however, is a notable recent scalp in South Africa, their 26-24 win last weekend the second time they have beaten the Springboks. They are also vastly wiser following the Jaguares’ inclusion in Super Rugby this season which tested them to the limit.

Ryan Crotty was again a force for the red and blacks.

Wagner eyes Hadlee’s 100-wicket record Assuming New Zealand opt to play Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi and Mark Craig, does that make the Southee-Boult partnership vulnerable?

The pair have been New Zealand’s finest new ball pairing since Hadlee and Richard Collinge, and arguably the best ever, but that does not guarantee selection given Wagner’s form and their respective slumps since the start of the year.

In six tests (two each against South Africa, Zimbabwe and Australia), Southee has taken 14 wickets at 46.14 with a strike rate of 90.

Compare that to a career average of 32.63 in 52 tests with a strike rate of 64.

In the same matches, Boult has 16 wickets at 38.62 with a strike rate of 82.

He averages 29.32 across 43 tests with a strike rate of 59.

This year, Wagner has 27 wickets in five tests at an average of 18.66 and strike rate of 43.

Those statistics give bowling coach Shane Jurgensen a clear working brief in an area in which New Zealand has lacked impact since Bond’s exit as a mentor after the 2015 World Cup. Wagner has always worked in the shadow of Southee and Boult.

He’s the chap who has toiled into the wind without a new ball; he tends to fight the teeth of opposition middle orders but gets few opportunities at tails; and,

Neil Wagner until the first test against South Africa, he laboured under a plus30 average.

That has reduced to 29.12.

His capabilities were also showcased by a first-class county campaign with Lancashire in which he took career-best match figures of 11 for 111 on debut.

He finished with 32 wickets at 29.28 from nine matches and took that form to Africa.

His current status is in marked contrast to a year ago, when he slipped off the selection radar for the Australian tour.

His chances of a return looked slim with Matt Henry and Doug Bracewell ranked ahead of him.

“I’ve got to work harder and fine tune so they can’t resist picking me again,” Wagner said at the

time. He has fought back.

The conundrum for selectors Mike Hesson and Gavin Larsen is whether Wagner is a suitable candidate to open in India.

The methodology behind many of his wickets has been to bowl a short-pitched length to attack the body.

Southee and Boult are renowned for pitching up and attacking the stumps or activating the slip cordon.

New Zealand will want to maximise the swing of the ball with conventional and reverse techniques on dry subcontinental wickets and outfields.

Minimising the footmarks which could assist India’s off spinner Ravi Ashwin and leg spinner Amit Mishra could also be considered.

Two left-arm pace bowlers might be preferable to using one of each.

Coach Hesson suggested Wagner exceeded their African expectations.

“In the last six months, since the test at Hagley Oval, where he got wickets against Australia, he’s gone from strength to strength.

“He’s established himself as the third seamer, which has been a revolving door for two to three guys, picking up three five-wicket bags in his past five tests.

“He keeps running in, even when it’s flat, and taking top order wickets, which is critical.”

The runaway leaders of the Mitre 10 Cup Championship racked up another win, 33-32, – but not before being pushed all the way to their limit. Otago yesterday made it a perfect four-from-four on the season, pipping the luckless Bay of Plenty by a point at Tauranga Domain. Otago have thrilled in the early weeks of the campaign, proving a little leaky in defence but possessing more than enough firepower to account for any deficiencies, while Bay of Plenty were without a win in their opening two games.

Challenges for Taylor Peter Taylor’s appointment to the All Whites coaching staff may prove a good move – but there are some aspects of it that don’t yet make sense. The former Leicester City manager was unveiled on Friday as the newest member of Anthony Hudson’s support staff, a little over 12 hours after a brief statement announcing the resignation of Alex Armstrong. It’s obviously been decided that Hudson needs more experience around him, and Taylor will certainly offer that, ahead of the challenges of the next 12 months.

Price could be right The promoters of New Zealand heavyweight Joseph Parker are open to their man getting his world title challenge against Anthony Joshua in November should the IBF champion not agree terms with Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev.

The possibility of Parker fighting Joshua in Manchester on November 26 rather than in London in March next year was raised by his probable opponent in the United Kingdom, Englishman David Price.

Price, a tall 33-year-old making a comeback after three defeats in the last three years, told World Boxing News of the possibility of losing his shot against Parker should Pulev fall through. Price would be an ideal dress rehearsal for the Kiwi’s mandatory title challenge.

With Australia and New Zealand battling for the main trophy, winless England and South Africa went head to head in the first game of the double header at Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena yesterday. Veteran English shooter Jo Harten finishing with 38 goals from 42 attempts.

Test schedule slammed Janine Southby has called for netball bosses to address the tight scheduling of international games, claiming the current programme reduces the team to “survival mode” for much of the season. Southby, in her first season in charge of the Ferns, had just three days in camp with her new line-up ahead of the Quad Series, which wrapped up in Melbourne last night with their third match in seven days.

The Ferns will head home for two days’ rest, before reassembling in Nelson for the opening test against Jamaica.

College ballers finish strong

Ashburton College placed 15th overall in the Secondary Schools’ AA Zone Four Boys’ Premiership Basketball Tournament at the EA Networks Centre Stadium on Saturday, while Christchurch Boys’ High lived up to their favourites tag with an emphatic final victory.

The tournament, which boasted some of the country’s finest young talent with Junior Tall

Blacks Angus McWilliam, Quinn Clinton, Jack Ansell and Toby Gillooly all in action, hosted 22 teams in four pools across five rounds.

Thompson Trophy winners Christchurch Boys’ High School were in dominant form throughout and swept Otago Boys’ High School aside 92-57 in the tournament’s grand final.

Meanwhile, Ashburton College recorded a mixed set of results.

After losses to Christ’s College

(95-70) and Shirley Boys’ High (71-61) in their opening matches, College posted their first victory over St Thomas of Canterbury (81-57).

A valiant 91-69 loss to eventual champions Christchurch Boys’ High followed before downing Southland Boys’ 76-72 in a dramatic overtime finish.

The home side then fell to an 84-64 loss to an impressive Waitaki Boys’ outfit before losing out 59-52 against St An-

drew’s on Saturday morning.

The tournament ended positively for the local boys, though, as College edged out James Hargest 86-84 to give departing Year 13 player Jayden Reid a fine send off.

“There were mixed results, but we’re pleased we ended the season with a win,” said Ashburton College coach Pip Johnston.

“There were some games that could have gone our way and didn’t, but that’s basketball.”

■ HARRIERS

Top times recorded at annual road race The Ashburton Harrier Club contested its annual club championship road race around the North Park Industrial Estate in fine conditions on Saturday.

The race was held in perfect spring weather and was hotly contested by the 12 runners and walkers.

Two juniors completed the two kilometre lap this year with Tom McKenzie placing first (19.57secs), followed by second

place-getter Jack McKenzie in 21.54secs.

The first senior runner home, who ran 10km (five laps), was Adam Marshall in a time of 41.42secs.

Senior and veteran men completed four laps and the female runners and walkers competed over three laps.

Brian Goodes (34.37secs) was the quickest of the veterans, with Ian Broadbelt (35.37secs) taking

out second place and Graham Wall (37.11secs) rounding out the top three.

Also running were John Van Polanen (41.17secs), Kenny Johnstone (46.20secs) and Trevor Cox (44.10secs).

The first male in the over 65 sections on handicap was Merv Gilbert (31.20secs) followed by Phillip Crozier (36.31secs), while the fastest veteran woman was Alison Conway (32.36secs).

Dave Strong (40.40secs) took top honours in the walking section with Judith Crozier (42.55secs) in second place, and Patrice Ansell (44.24secs) in third.

Also finishing were Bill Hood (44.36secs), Peter Larkin (46.46 secs), Lynda Bayne (47.18secs), Barbara Taylor (47.31secs), Karen Hodgson (50.42secs), Mike O’Callaghan (53.55secs), and Viv Strong (61.50secs).

Lydia Ko started this morning’s final round at the LPGA’s latest event in Ontario just four shots off the lead. Ko has closed the game on the leaders after an eight under 64 moved her to 10 under for the tournament. Korea’s Mi Hyang Lee had the lead at 14 under. World number two Ariya Jutanugarn was two off the pace in share of third.

Double for D’Llaro An emotional Graeme Lord joined a select club at Ellerslie following the commanding victory of D’Llaro in the Great Northern Hurdles on Saturday.

The Cambridge horseman won the event aboard Vincere in 1987 and 1988 during his riding career and on Saturday he was proud as punch to add a training success in the Schweppes-sponsored feature.

“My father and my grandfather rode over fences and so did my brother Murray and I and after winning it twice on Vincere this is just great,” Lord said.

“I’m just rapt and the bloke rode him a treat.

“He did exactly what I wanted him to.”

Lord was referring to the Australian Brad McLean, who let D’Llaro take up his customary role in front after the first lap.

“I’ve had faith in the horse all the way through and the hardest thing was getting a rider.

“Nobody wanted to stick with him so I got Brad to come over,” said Lord, who races the 10-yearold with the estate of his late father Ivan, farrier Kim Hughes and another former leading jumps jockey in John McGifford.

D’Llaro revelled in his work at the head of the field and he never looked in any danger.

Lasike ‘a beast’ New Zealand NFL hopeful Paul Lasike has made the Chicago Bears’ final roster for the upcoming NFL season, according to reports. The 26-yearold had a standout pre-season for the NFC North Division contenders, making numerous runs for the Chicago outfit. As a result, it appears Lasike has scored a spot in the Bears’ 53-man squad. Lasike’s spot in the Bears roster was reportedly confirmed following his performance against the Cleveland Browns last week, where one of his plays was tweeted out by the official NFL account, with the caption: “Paul Lasike is a BEAST”.

McEnroe attacks Kyrgios Nick Kyrgios already was flexing his injured right hip before a game late in the first set of his third-round match at the US Open.

Then came a wild point that ended with him skidding to a stop on his knees on the sideline.

Not long after that, the 14thseeded Kyrgios again tried to stretch out his hip, before taking a medical timeout for help from a trainer.

Soon enough, he was barely moving during points.

Eventually, Kyrgios stopped while trailing 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 yesterday, allowing 63rd-ranked Illya Marchenko of Ukraine to reach the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.

“My hip was bothering me my first two matches and I got through,” Kyrgios said. “I guess it was just a matter of time.”

Marchenko did not hide his excitement about what he’s now achieved, exclaiming to the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd dur-

ing an on-court interview: “It’s round of 16! Oh, my God!” He will face two-time major champion and No. 3 seed Stan Wawrinka next.

John McEnroe has challenged Kyrgios to quit professional tennis if his heart isn’t in it.

Commentating on American TV, McEnroe was scathing of Kyrgios’s demeanour before Australia’s last singles hope retired from his third-round match against Marchenko.

McEnroe has been critical and complimentary of Kyrgios in equal measure since the 21-year-old’s emergence as one of tennis’ hottest prospects.

Last year he lashed Kyrgios for his “bonehead” tactics during a first-round loss to Andy Murray at Flushing Meadows, while he also took aim at the world No.16 at Wimbledon.

But his latest attack was particularly harsh, given Kyrgios’ obvious injury concerns.

else,” McEnroe said. “He’s hurt because he’s not training enough.”

Meanwhile, two past men’s champions, Andy Murray and Juan Martin del Potro, moved into the fourth round.

Murray, who won the 2012 US Open, had trouble in each of the first two sets, but eventually became more patient during baseline exchanges and took control for a 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Paolo Lorenzi.

Murray joins Kyle Edmund – who won Friday to set up a match against No. 1 Novak Djokovic – to give Britain two men in the round of 16 at the American Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 1966, when it was known as the US Championships.

A third British man, Dan Evans, came within a point of also making the fourth round but failed to complete what would have been a significant upset, fading in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (8), 6-2 loss to No. 3 Stan Wawrinka.

Evans held a match point at 6-5 in the fourth-set tiebreaker, but Wawrinka erased it, then took that set and raced to a 4-0 lead in the fifth.

Wawrinka next faces 63rdranked Illya Marchenko, who advanced when No. 14 Nick Kyrgios quit.

There’s only one American man left: Jack Sock, who faces No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga today.

That’s because 19-year-old qualifier Jared Donaldson’s run ended with a straight-set loss to 37-year-old Ivo Karlovic, the oldest man to reach the fourth round in New York since Jimmy Connors was 39 in 1991.

Karlovic plays No. 6 Kei Nishikori next.

Del Potro’s resurgence continued with a 7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-3 victory over No. 11 David Ferrer.

The 2009 champion in New York missed 2 1/2 years’ worth of major tournaments because of three operations on his left wrist, which is why he needed a wild-card invitation to get into the field.

Another win, another milestone for Serena Williams who rolled into the last 16 of the US Open by crushing Sweden’s Johanna Larsson 6-2 6-1 to collect grand slam victory number 307 – the most by a woman in the Open era. As in the majority of her victories at the majors, Williams operated with ruthless efficiency but displayed little fire as she coolly dispatched the Swede in exactly one hour. The victory moved the 34-year-old American past Martina Navratilova and level with Roger Federer for most grand slam victories.

Moore still the man The Wallabies still have faith in Stephen Moore as skipper despite him coming under fire for his icy relationship with referees, Israel Folau says. Moore’s leadership and on-field contribution have been questioned since Australia’s Bledisloe Cup capitulation – in particular when coach Michael Cheika savaged referee Romain Poite for ignoring approaches from Moore to clarify some of his decisions. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen suggested that was because of Moore’s attitude.

Moore’s harshest critics believe he is no longer effective at Test level, but Folau still believes Moore is the right man to take them forward.
