The demolition of one of the most recognisable buildings in the Ashburton CBD is well under way with plenty of action visible from the street. The frontage of the Ashburton MSA building has come down as part of the demolition of the building. “It certainly is sad, the building is about 80 years old and it could tell a lot of stories,” Ashburton MSA spokesman Simon McDonnell said. Crews were working on Friday to remove a large number of bricks from the site, a design feature of the building that has been causing plenty of headaches. “There is a lot to get out of the way, it is triple bricked because they didn’t have supports in those days which is part of why it has to come down,” he said. “There is a hell of a lot of bricks to move. “On the other bits they had to pick them away, especially where it backs on to the new building, but at the front they can just smash them out.” McDonnell said all going well there would be two more weeks of demolition work to be done before work can start on the new building. is just a general expectation and there is nobody tied to that,” he said. The demolition work had gone smoothly so far, said McDonnell,

Mt Hutt opening the slopes to locals Mt Hutt Skifield is hoping to enter into its final week for the season with a bang tomorrow marked down as the second Locals Day for the year. In an effort to try and encourage more people from within Mid Canterbury to make the trek up to the mountain and enjoy the slopes, Mt Hutt introduced the idea earlier in the year and did so as a fundraiser for local group Kidzmethven. They managed to raise $3000 for the organisation through the

Originally the day was set down for today, but inclement weather which is supposed to hit the mountain this morning resulted in a switch of days. “We want it to be a really good experience for everyone and the weather wasn’t looking too flash
for Saturday whereas the forecast for Sunday looks super.” Kidzmethven will again be the recipients of the fundraising efforts. Mt Hutt officially closes for the season next Sunday. Earlier in the week they received 15cm of new snow which sees them with a base of between 1.6 metres and 2.4 metres across the mountain. There is no intention at this stage to extend the season any further past next Sunday.
With just one week until voting closes in this year’s local body election, the Ashburton District is following the national trend of a slow return of ballot papers. Currently 28.36 per cent of the district’s 21,865 registered electors have taken the time to vote and return their ballot papers either by mail or by dropping them in a ballot box. With one week remaining in 2016, 29.03 per cent of voting papers had been returned. The Ashburton District’s return rate might be low, but it is significantly higher than for most local authorities around New Zealand, with many districts and cities counting returns in the midteens. In the 2016 election Ashburton was one of only a few councils to have a voter return rate higher than 50 per cent, at 53 per cent. Mackenzie had the best strike rate in 2016 at 64.3 per cent. In the 2016 election there was a significant surge in returns five days out from the close of voting. As a reminder to electors to vote, Local Government New Zealand is declaring today Vote Day and is urging people who have not completed their voting papers to do so and ensure they either drop them in a post box or leave them in a ballot box. The Ashburton District’s only ballot box is at the customer services counter in the Ashburton District Council’s administration building. It is available during office hours and will also be available on Saturday, October 12, until voting closes at noon. For people intending to return their ballot papers through the post, to ensure those papers are received by noon on Saturday, they must be posted no later than Tuesday.

A 26-year-old man has appeared in the Christchurch District Court charged with the homicide of a Rakaia dairy farm worker on September 18. The man, who has not been named, was identified as a Christchurch man who had been charged with the murder of Tony Grant Waldron in a media release issued on Friday afternoon. Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Quested, who is leading the investigation, praised the investigation team for their hard work, but said inquiries are still ongoing. “The investigation into Tony’s death is far from over and there is still a lot of work for us to do,” he said. “Our thoughts are very much with the Waldron family at this time and we are committed to providing them with the answers to Tony’s death.” Comments on the Ashbur-

The man appeared in the Christchurch District Court on the morning of September 20 charged with threatening to kill, possession of ammunition and having possession of a drug utensil relating to cannabis use. He was granted interim name suppression and remanded in custody to reappear at the Ashburton District Court on October 14.

Get there, it’s truly scrumptious Broadway legend Terrence Mann was once quoted as saying that movies will make you famous, television will make you rich, but theatre will make you good. It’s true too. So many stars of today cut their teeth on the stage – performing in the school band, featuring in the school production – and for those a little more passionate about the craft, it really begins when they step on to the big stage and perform for a group like the Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre. We’re lucky here, we’ve got this little hotbed of success for musical and theatrical skill and finesse. We’ve grown and fostered some remarkable talent. And everyone has to start somewhere. Here, that somewhere for so many has been the Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre which for years has provided a platform for young thespians and music lovers alike to bloom. Taking big name shows, or movies and adapting them to a younger cast and engaging a music-loving audience who appreciate the talent and effort it takes to pull off a show has become the modus operandi for the group and they’ve hit the nail on the head once again with their 2019 show, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr. With a cast of more than 60 children, some appearing as though they’re still in the very early stages of their schooling lives, it can’t have always been easy – but the passion, patience and pride that has clearly been introduced by director Alice Sollis, musical director Peter Cairns and choreographer Jessie Thomson is as evident as the sight of a car flying through the sky. From start to finish this is a toe-tapping show that will have you wanting to stand up and sing-along to all the songs that are known and loved from the original adaption of the movie. It’s all there, fine-tuned and perfected, although there’s the element of youthful enthusiasm that makes it endearing. Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre has again unearthed and propelled some rising stars whose names will be sure to feature in future shows as years progress. Michael Munroe played the role of the slightly oddball character Caractacus Potts with aplomb, producing a strong character and some strong solo vocal performances including the beautiful lead in Hushabye Mountain. He was ably assisted by Liam Walker (Jeremy Potts) and Cara Patterson (Jemima Potts) who filled the important roles of the two children excellently, showcasing
their broad-ranging talents with some solid vocals. Harriet Hill, who was charged with the role of Truly Scrumptious was excellent. Her voice, while gentle and still developing, is one that will be worth looking out for in the future as she grows in confidence and skill. Others to really grab the attention were
Ellie Lawn and Tom Patterson who played the roles of the Baroness and Baron while Freya Jemmett put some particularly impressive efforts into her portrayal of the child catcher. A particular highlight for this reviewer though, who does admit to being a sucker for a bit of comedy, were the performances of Brooke Miller and Emma Petrie as the Vulgarian spies, Boris and Goran. They didn’t beat around the bush and delivered comedy and fun throughout the performance. But while the solos are always the easiest to pinpoint, the vocal highlight of the show was the big numbers involving the entire cast. The sound that so many little voices managed to propel from the stage to around the auditorium and the final performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang had me singing away in the car the entire
way home. Cairns has done an excellent role in enabling his projects to really push their voices far and wide and that, alongside with slick dance steps which are now the expected from anything Thomson has control of and the usual flair and perfection from Sollis made for an entertaining evening. It’s heartening to see such talent and passion for the stage coming through in this show because it shows that the future of the craft in this region looks set to continue for many years to come. So many of those on stage this weekend will go on to perform for others, whether it be Big Little Theatre Company, the Methven Theatre Company or the Variety Theatre Ashburton, we are just incredibly lucky that they have this pathway to take those steps. The show officially opened last night to the public but there’s one show today (October 5) at 5pm and then another tomorrow (October 6) at 2pm. Make sure you get along, you won’t be disappointed. reviewed by Matt Markham
Ashburton Guardian Celebrates 140 Years Of Service BOER WAR, BRITAIN AND BURNETT STREET When Robert Bell strode to work in September 1900, he had a lot on his mind. The world was facing a new century and he’d purchased a partnership interest in the Ashburton Guardian. It was established 21 years earlier in 1879 and gone through a multitude of owners. That was to stop with Robert, a Scotsman, who was then manager of the Timaru Herald. Uppermost in his mind was the Transvaal War, later to be called the Boer or South African War. Sieges at Ladysmith, Kimberley and Mafeking had been relieved and the Boer stronghold of Pretoria fell in June, 1900. Ashburton was bustling with patriotism. Committees were set up to raise funds for “our boys” over there.
to families and their letters were reprinted in the Guardian. Supporting Britain and her empire was seen as the right thing to do by the Guardian and its subscribers. Robert Bell also had local issues on his mind. The town was growing and there was a feeling of optimism among its people at the start of a new century. Robert wanted to capture that because, first and foremost, he intended to dedicate his daily newspaper to the community. He did. By 1902 he owned the Guardian and his influence extended to readers and advertisers who populated the front page. That commitment to Mid Canterbury has extended through four generations of his family to the present Owner/Publisher, Bruce Bell.

ASHBURTON GUARDIAN IS IN GOOD HANDS Ashburton has been enriched by the number of people born and educated in Mid Canterbury, gone away to experience the world and returned, contributing what they’ve learned to the community.

Bruce Bell, Owner/Publisher of the Ashburton Guardian, is a great example.
“At first I felt very underskilled, but I was a quick learner and surrounded myself with a good team,” he recalls. “The legacy of three generations before me, burdened me and it challenged me to be the best I could.”
As a fourth generation Mid Cantabrian, it was preordained he’d join the family firm and eventually take a leadership role. That was far from his mind when, at 17 and a few months, he started in the front office. Bruce took classifieds, proof-read the advertising and served at the counter but “the ink didn’t flow in my veins.” The Ashburton Guardian was his father’s life, not Bruce’s. “Dad was a deep, logical thinker and a good administrator. After dinner he’d spend more time working on the paper. For me the job put petrol in the car,” Bruce said. At 21 he left for London. His OE was overdue. Bruce loved his time away. One abiding memory was journeying 8,500 miles from London to Sri Lanka in a Morris Oxford. With suitcases perched on the roof, Bruce and four companions took eight weeks travelling through Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India before reaching their destination. When he returned he’d changed. “I went away as a boy and came back as a man,” Bruce said. “I realised I was the next generation of family members to run the business. I needed to settle down.” He also realised the importance of The Guardian to its readers. For nearly a hundred years it was the glue that held the community together. It reported on every major event locally, nationally and internationally. It was the independent voice of Mid Canterbury. Bruce realised his calling and set out to be the best administrator he could. To manage The Guardian, he had to learn how to run a business, so he enrolled in the New Zealand Institute of Management. From Assistant Advertising Manager, he became
It can be lonely at the top. Many people will testify to that. Bruce was blessed he had insurance salesman, Bob Elliott, as a sounding board. The following years were buoyant for the newspaper. Bruce developed a strong commercial sense and expanded the business. Guardian Print, then Inkwise, printing arm of the Guardian, printed over 180 different publications, specialist magazines and catalogues. The Guardian also became an internet service provider. But he never forgot the newspaper and its subscribers were his core business and an essential part of Mid Canterbury life. He contributed funding to many major projects such as the Ashburton Trust Event Centre and EA Networks Centre. With the advent of social media, Bruce was keenly aware of changing times in daily papers when huge monopolies purchased newspapers, stifling their independence and often closing the least profitable down. But not the Ashburton Guardian. Today it’s one of very few locally owned and operated papers. It’s open-minded, even-handed and unbiased and provides a depth of daily information that can’t be found anywhere else. “Every day I’m reminded of the Guardian’s value. I get tremendous pride when I see the newspaper on my desk and know I have an incredibly talented team to thank.” The next 10 years, as The Guardian approaches its 150th anniversary, will be a challenge but he’s dedicated to keeping the newspaper profitable. The ink well and truly flows in Bruce Bell’s veins.

Anglers keen for brown trout By Linda Clarke

Mid Canterbury anglers will be hoping rain forecast for this weekend does not eventuate so they can catch brown trout in the Ashburton and Rangitata Rivers. The river mouth and lower sections of the rivers are a good place to target at this time of year if the water clarity is good, says Central South Island Fish and Game Officer Rhys Adams. But a wet day forecast for today might cause the river flows to rise and discolour the water, making for tough fishing. Rangers have been out and about since the sport fishing season opened on Tuesday, checking fishing licences and catches. The Ashburton and Rangitata Rivers, and their tributaries, are popular for brown trout fishing, while Lake Hood is a great spot to take the kids for trout and perch. Adams said Lake Hood generally fished best early in the season for trout, before weed growth kicked in. Perch fishing would improve as the water temperatures rose through to Christmas. “Perch are a great option for kids to hone their skills as they are aggressive and attack almost any lure or bait.” Some Mid Canterbury anglers travelled further afield on opening day to the Opihi River and Lake Opuha. Adams said rangers on both those waterways reported it had

Rangers encountered nearly 50 anglers who travelled from all around Canterbury, including Ashburton, to fish Lake Opuha on Tuesday morning. “They had some great catches of mainly brown trout in the 2-3-pound size class and a few hard fighting rainbow trout.” Adams said about 20 anglers were on the Opihi River, between the mouth and Pleasant
Point, on opening morning. “The river conditions were great with high water clarity and plenty of large trout that could be sighted and fished to. They weren’t too easy to catch though and most anglers caught 1-3 brown trout for the day. We had no compliance issues.” Rangers are reminding anglers to get their fishing licences, which can cover the whole season or just one day. A season li-
cence for an adult is $133, a junior licence is $27 and children 11 and under are free. A family licence is $173. Fishing without a licence is a criminal offence under the Conservation Act 1987 and offenders face a maximum fine of $5000. Anglers are also being reminded that many waters, including the Ashburton Lakes, are closed until “high country-opening”, the first Saturday in November.
Reminder for locals to get out and vote Ashburton District electors who are yet to cast their vote in the local body elections are being encouraged to complete their voting papers and put them in the post on Vote Day, today. Voting officially closes at 12 noon, Saturday, October 12, but Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach is urging people to get in early and ensure their vote makes it to the council office in time by posting their

Catholic bishop offers to resign
voting papers a week before the closing date. “We are now well into the election period, and voters should have received their papers in the mail in the last two weeks. With only one week left to make your voice count on who will represent our community, now is the time to complete your papers and send them in.” Saturday, October 5 is known as Vote Day and is being promoted
by the council as an opportunity to ensure voting papers get to the council in time to be counted. “Local body elections are the community’s chance to have their say about the future of their district and choose who will make local decisions that will affect them for the next three years. Make the most of this opportunity and exercise your democratic right these elections,” Riach said. People who have not received
their voting papers can still take part in the elections by casting a special vote. They can do this by visiting the council office or contacting their local electoral officer. Elections are being held for the mayoralty; Ashburton, Western and Eastern Wards; and the Ashburton Licensing Trust. A by-election will be called for the Methven Community Board later this year.
A Catholic bishop who is part of the church’s response to the Royal Commission of inquiry into state abuse, has offered his resignation to the Pope. RNZ understands the Pope will accept Bishop Charles Drennan’s resignation later tonight. The Catholic Church said it is unable to comment on the situation until that resignation is accepted. Bishop Drennan is based in Palmerston North and is also a member of Te Ropu Tautoko – the group set up by the Catholic Church to liaise with the Royal Commission of inquiry. Last month it also emerged that the partner and support person of one of the Commission’s survivor advisory group members is a convicted child sex offender. There were calls for the commissioners to resign following revelations the sex offender – who is a partner of a member of the advisory group – was involved in their meetings. The man’s partner said she had no intention of resigning from the group despite some of its members saying they had been retraumatised after learning of his convictions. The man told RNZ he hadn’t attended the meetings, but admitted being in the room. “I didn’t attend them. I was there to support my partner in the room. I didn’t attend any of the meetings per se,” he said. The man said he talked to some of the survivors at those gatherings, but his contact was limited and he did not join them for meals. “I was not sitting with them. Me and my partner were sitting at a table away from them.”

Car seat recycling coming to district Ashburton residents can now recycle their expired, damaged or unwanted child car seats, for free, through the SeatSmart programme, with collection sites in Ashburton, Rakaia and Methven. This comes after the Ashburton District Council partnered with the national child car seat recycling programme to offer the service. Ashburton is the only district where it is free to recycle a seat, thanks to support from the council. Service delivery group manager Neil McCann said the initiative supports the council’s goal of reducing waste ending up in landfill, which is a great outcome for the community.
“A variety of common household goods are already accepted free of charge for recycling at our Resource Recovery Parks and drop-off sites and we are pleased to expand this list to include child car seats. “It gives residents even more opportunity to reduce their waste and engage with more sustainable solutions.” Seats can be dropped off at the Methven recycling yard (corner of Methven Chertsey Road and Line Road), Rakaia Resource Recovery Park (West Town Belt) and Ashburton Resource Recovery Park. SeatSmart was created by Hastings-based recycling specialist 3R Group and has seen strong growth since launching in April 2016. The three new sites in the Ashburton Dis-
trict bring the number of collection sites in the South Island to 20 and the total number nationwide to 37. Programme manager Toni Bye says she is pleased to be able to bridge the gap between SeatSmart collection sites in Christchurch and Geraldine, increasing access to the programme. “We’re delighted to have the council’s backing for a programme that not only diverts waste from landfill but also raises awareness of expiry dates on car seats,” she said. Seats collected by the programme are dismantled by offenders in Department of Correction community work programmes as well as by social enterprises which em-
ploy people who have a disability or are disadvantaged or marginalised. Up to 70 per cent of a seat’s material (by weight) is recyclable. “Key materials such as plastic, metal and harnesses can be recycled or reused. The harnesses, for example, are made into bags, while the metal is easily recycled,” she said. SeatSmart also promotes road safety by encouraging parents and care-givers to check seats for expiry dates. “People don’t always know that child car seats have expiry dates. The extremes of temperature in cars, stress on plastic parts, all takes a toll on seats,” she said. To find out more visit www.seatsmart. co.nz
Take care answering the door Police are urging people to keep themselves and their property safe after a string of burglaries in Christchurch. In particular, Police have recently received two reports of offenders knocking on a front door, distracting the resident and then entering the home to steal items near the door. When the residents returned they have found items stolen and the offender gone. It is too early to say if the incidents are connected and Police are keeping an open mind.

The dates are locked in for one of Ashburton’s iconic fundraisers, with an environmentally friendly twist for this year’s edition. Toot for Tucker is once again being organised by the Ashburton County Lions Club, who this year will be distributing recyclable bags for people to place their food items in thanks to Property Brokers. The club’s publicity director Carolyn Nelson said the bags were all donated by Property Brokers, and would be distributed to households.
Toot for Tucker will be held on November 18 this year, with collection starting at 6pm. “The proceeds will be going to the same places this year, to the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul and Presbyterian Support,” she said. Signage will be going up around the town shortly to remind everyone of the dates. The operation will be run out of the Ashburton Racecourse once again, with helpers asked to arrive at 5.30pm to receive their running instructions. Food will be sorted and distributed the next day.

O’Connor: Expect changes By Damien O’Connor
I
n the past few weeks I’ve attended meetings about the Government’s freshwater proposals and visited farms around the country. I understand change of any kind can be scary, but people should be a little cynical about some of the misrepresentation taking place. Despite what some might say, the Government doesn’t “hate” farmers and we’re not interested in destroying rural communities. That kind of “them v us’’ talk isn’t helping farming families. We are interested in improving freshwater quality, something farmers and urban Kiwis agree is necessary. Doing so will help protect our farmers’ international reputation for sustainably-produced food and fibre and safeguard excellent commodity prices. At the meetings, I’ve heard and respect farmers’ concerns about proposed nitrate limits, fencing and other issues in the water proposals. There is work to do after submissions close and I’d expect changes. I’ve been accused of not mentioning the good work farmers do. Rubbish. Since starting as minister I’ve proudly and regularly praised work including riparian planting, protecting wetlands, tree planting, fencing and limiting fertiliser use. Those things are happening now and not hurting farmers’ bottom line. I’ve spoken many times about the need for change in urban centres – the often disgusting state of Auckland’s beaches is a prime example. However, I’m committed to meaningful baseline targets for things like nitrate levels in rivers – in urban and rural New Zealand – because that is a social, economic and environmental imperative. The targets that we finally settle on as part of the proposals will be met over time. I want to

see change over a generation and for it to be part of the good work already happening. Rural communities will talk with regional councils about the timeframe for achieving targets. To put the nitrate target in perspective, there are many catchments where rivers are about or near the suggested level. There are others which will require greater effort, but I’m confident we can adapt by using best practice and technology to get there. Last week, I visited several farms that have made environmental changes that did not hurt their bottom line. These things
are being done, but we shouldn’t ignore that in some places improvements are required. I reject that the Government is doing nothing to help farmers. The Government set aside $229 million to spend on things like boosting advisory and extension services and the establishment of local groups so farmers can learn from each other about what works. I’m talking to Beef and Lamb, Dairy NZ and others about integrated farm plans to lessen workload. We’re investing tens of millions of dollars in tools like Overseer to help farmers.
A Farm Debt Mediation scheme will be a safety net for farmers and improvements to NAIT will help prevent some of the tracing issues we’ve experienced with Mycoplasma bovis. Soon we will release an industry-backed plan to ensure the sector gets the skilled workers it needs. We’ve nearly doubled the funding for rural support trusts and the Budget had $1.9 billion for mental health to improve frontline services, rural communities included. Recently an independent survey found that the “urban/rural divide” is not the issue some make

out. People in cities are grateful and supportive of farmers’ work. Please be proud and talk to people about what you’re doing. I understand farmers’ concerns, but I know that good work is happening and I’m confident that by working together we can improve water quality over time.

“I don’t know how many people you’ve lost to cancer, but it’s too damn many,” says Bill Buckley. Over the past four years, the 76-year-old Buckley has thrown much of his wealth – recently estimated by the NBR Rich List at $110 million – into creating a new company, Neutron Therapeutics, which aims to treat deadly tumours using Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). In other words, a neutron beam that zaps a tumour cell-bycell. It’s a technology that could offer new hope for those who have been told they have terminal cancer, especially in the head and neck – and it’s gone way beyond the white-boarding stage. Neutron Therapeutics has just closed the first major sale of its $US20m BNCT Suite, to Tokushukai Medical Group, the largest private hospital chain in Japan. It’s hoped that the Kiwi-made cancer-fighting machine will be up and running by late next year. On a chilly September morning a dairy farm worker was found dead in his bed near Rakaia, what has unfolded in the two-and-a-half week homicide investigation since has left many questions and not a lot of answers. The Guardian’s Jaime Pitt-MacKay reports.
I
n this district there isn’t much that happens without someone hearing about it. Whether it is good news or bad news, much like bubbles in champagne, it has a way of finding their way to the surface pretty quickly. That is where my shock came in after learning there had been a killing near Rakaia on the evening of September 18 and that police had been swarming to a Gardiners Road property for most of the day. We would, of course, later learn that the person killed was 29-year old dairy farmer Tony Waldron, a father of two young children. By the time I first laid my eyes on the property where Waldron had been found by a colleague after he failed to show up for the morning milking, the property was
shrouded in the pitch black of night, with only the recognisable outlines of police cars cutting through the night by their headlights. The police media team remained tight-lipped that evening and for myself and those here at the Guardian that knew something had happened, we turned in for the night expecting big news to break in the morning. And break it did. Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Quested released a statement saying that a homicide investigation had been launched following the death of a 29-year-old man on a property near Rakaia. There was no more detail available than that and it was only through a manager of the property owners Dairy Holdings Ltd did we first
learn that Waldron was a father of two who had only started the job in the past few months. By all accounts he was a good worker, never late and there were no obvious reasons why he would be killed. Soon enough national media outlets were on the scene as well, sniffing around for a headline that could attract as much interest in Gore and Whakatane. By lunchtime on Thursday things seemed as under control as they could be in a homicide investigation as forensics teams in their baggy white suits were conducting their searches of the property while specialist teams scoured nearby fencelines to the home for evidence. Later that afternoon, we heard that police cars and am-
bulances were travelling quickly between Christchurch and Rakaia and, by coincidence, saw a number of the police Armed Offenders Squad outside the Rakaia Police Station. Within minutes they were in vehicles and heading towards Gardiners Road and myself and a journalist and cameraman from another news outlet were following as close as the trailing police car would let us. We arrived at the start of Gardiners Road to find it blocked by a police car and we had to wait patiently to see what would happen next. Unknown to us, they were conducting a search warrant at another Gardiners Road property, where it is believed one man was
arrested. The man appeared in the Christchurch District Court on September 20 charged with threatening to kill, possession of ammunition and having possession of a drug utensil relating to cannabis use. He was granted interim name suppression and was remanded in custody to reappear at the Ashburton District Court on October 14. Irrigation and effluent ponds on the property were later searched by the National Dive Squad. At the time, we saw the Armed Offenders Squad leaving Gardiners Road with nobody in the back of their vehicles.

From there, information remained scarce. Police officially released Waldron’s name on September 20. It had initially been reported that Waldron had suffered a gunshot wound. Police we spoke to were hesitant to confirm this and after a post-mortem examination, they confirmed that he was not in fact shot. But police were refusing to say how he did sustain the injuries that led to his death. Last week police expanded their search from the Gardiners Road area and moved to the Rakaia riverbed and a property and vehicle that were seized
following a search warrant. Not a lot is known about what was found at the Papanui address or why it was searched. A vehicle was seized by police and was being forensically examined. Police spent two days scouring the riverbed, searching both the water and land the length of the bridge. Police at the scene joked about it being much better conditions than when they were searching the effluent pond. Since then authorities expanded their search to the Selwyn riverbed late this week as they continue to search for evidence.
Police have maintained throughout the investigation that they believe that this was not a random attack and there was no threat to the public. A 26-year-old man appeared in the Christchurch District Court yesterday charged with the murder. Quested praised the investigation team for their hard work but says inquiries are still ongoing. “The investigation into Tony’s death is far from over and there is still a lot of work for us to do,” he said. “Our thoughts are very much with the Waldron family
at this time and we are committed to providing them with the answers to Tony’s death.” Police have remained tight with information throughout the investigation, as they should. Any more information that gets out into the public arena could have a detrimental effect on the investigation and possible court case. The Ashburton District is home to one of the most famous cold cases in the country, the Kirsty Bentley murder, and everyone would be hoping we do not end up with a similar
outcome here. Ashburton is no stranger to homicide and murder, with the fatal stabbing of Tainui Wano in 2016 and the killing of Sina Solomona at her Cass Street home after returning from a late shift at her job 2012. In total there are believed to have been 13 murders reported in the Ashburton District, with the first taking place in November 1913 when housewife Rosanna Lilley was murdered in her home at Mayfield.

Worker kills 4 colleagues AP A civilian employee raged through Paris police headquarters with a knife yesterday, stabbing four police colleagues to death before he was shot and killed, French authorities said. The man, a technology administrator in the police intelligence unit, launched the attack in his office then moved to other parts of the large 19th century building across the street from Notre Dame Cathedral. Three of the people he killed were police officers, the fourth an administrator, the Paris prosecutor said. An officer stopped the attack when he shot the assailant in the compound’s courtyard, said a police official. The employee who carried out the attack had worked for the city’s police force since 2003 without ever arousing concerns, French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said. “There were no warning signs,” Castaner said. “This man was known inside the computer department, he worked alongside his colleagues and never presented any behavioural difficulties,” he added. Two pilots among 7 dead in airplane crash AP A pilot with more than 7,000 hours of experience flying a B-17 and his co-pilot were among seven people killed when the bomber crashed and burned at a Connecticut airport, officials said yesterday. Pilot Ernest McCauley, 75, of Long Beach, California, had flown for over 20 years with the educational group that owned the World War Two-era plane and was also its safety officer,
according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The plane carrying 13 people crashed and burned after experiencing mechanical trouble on take-off on Wednesday morning from Bradley International Airport. Five passengers were killed along with McCauley and the co-pilot, Michael Foster, 71, of Jacksonville, Florida, according to the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection.
Investigators have begun securing evidence, including the engine in which the pilot had reported a problem, NTSB member Jennifer Homendy said at a news conference. As part of the investigation, she said, they also will look into witness reports that work was being done on one or two of the engines prior to takeoff. The plane had last been through a major inspection in January 2019, she said. Among the passengers killed
was Gary Mazzone, 60, of East Windsor, who was a history and military buff, according to his son, Daniel Mazzone. He didn’t know of his father’s plans to ride the B-17, he said, but knew why he would be interested. “I think he just wanted to see what it was like to be in the back of a B-17,” Daniel Mazzone said. “He loved World War Two. He loved people who served this country in any capacity.”

China urged to probe Bidens AP President Donald Trump yesterday publicly encouraged China to investigate Democratic political rival Joe Biden, snubbing his nose at an impeachment inquiry into whether a similar, private appeal to another foreign government violated his oath of office. Trump declared at the White House, “China should start an investigation into the Bidens”. He said he hadn’t previously asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to investigate the former vice-president and his son Hunter, but it’s “certainly something we could start thinking about”. By publicly egging on China, Trump was amplifying the message he’d delivered in private to the president of Ukraine. That message, revealed by a government whistleblower, has spawned the impeachment investigation by the House. Trump, who has defended his contact with Ukraine as “perfect,” went further in expanding his request to China, a communist world power that has much at stake in

questionable secret conversations into the open, helping to inoculate him against charges that he is engaged in nefarious action, cover-ups or obstruction of justice. Trump’s appeal to China evoked his public call in 2016 for Russia to track down his then-rival Hillary Clinton’s emails – a move that was seen as an unprecedented appeal for foreign election interference. It is a violation of federal campaign finance law to solicit anything of value from a foreign government to help a campaign.
Banksy sold at auction A painting by Banksy showing the House of Commons overrun with chimpanzees has sold at auction for just under £9.9m ($NZ19.4). The 4m wide artwork Devolved Parliament was painted by the anonymous Bristol artist in 2009. Expected to fetch between £1.5m and £2m, it sold for nearly five times its estimate at Sotheby’s in London. Banksy reacted on Instagram, saying it was a “record price for a Banksy painting” and “shame I didn’t still own it”. Sotheby’s tweeted the painting had sold “to applause at £9,879,500 – nine times its previous record – after a 13 minute bidding battle”. - BBC
Smugglers intercepted Mexican authorities say they have intercepted two trucks carrying 243 migrants in crowded conditions in the southern state of Chiapas. A government statement says the vehicles were discovered in two separate incidents by federal authorities. The migrants were from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, and 46 were minors. The statement said the migrants showed signs of dehydration and were treated and delivered to the custody of the National Migration Institute. The drivers and their companions were detained. - AP

AP North Korea said yesterday it has carried out its first underwater-launched ballistic missile test in three years, in an apparent bid to dial up pressure on the United States ahead of a weekend resumption of their nuclear diplomacy. Thursday’s test of the Pukguksong-3 missile, which North Korea describes as a type of missile capable of being launched from a submarine, is seen as the North’s most high-profile weapons launch since it began diplomacy with the United States early last year. Some experts say North Korea wants to show to the US what
would happen if diplomacy fails again The Korean Central News Agency said the missile test in the waters off its east coast was successful and “ushered in a new phase in containing the outside forces’ threat to (North Korea) and further bolstering its military muscle for self-defence”. The KCNA report didn’t initially elaborate on whether the missile was fired from a submarine, a barge or other underwater launch platform. North Korea-dispatched photos showed the missile rising and spewing bright flames above a cloud of smoke from the sea, but the launch platform was not iden-
tifiable. The Pentagon said the short-to-medium range missile was not launched from a submarine. Air Force Col. Pat Ryder, spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Pentagon reporters Thursday there was “no indication that it was launched from a submarine, but rather, a seabased platform”. Other defence officials described it as a barge or floating platform. South Korea’s Defense Ministry said the North Korean missile travelled about 450 kilometres at a maximum altitude of 910 kilometres. Ministry officials said it flew higher than any other short-range weapons North Korea test-fired in recent
months. KCNA said the missile was launched in a vertical mode and that its test had no adverse impact on the security of neighbouring countries. If fired at a standard trajectory, an analyst said the missile could have travelled 1500-2000 kilometres. He said the Pukguksong-3 is a medium-range missile. North Korea hadn’t tested mediumand long-range missiles since its entrance to talks with the United States. North Korean and US officials are to meet tomorrow in Stockholm to restart diplomacy on how to end the North Korean nuclear crisis.
‘Grave violations’ Deteriorating security across Afghanistan in the past four years led to over 14,000 “grave violations” against children, including nearly 3500 youngsters killed and over 9000 injured, according to a UN report circulated yesterday. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned “the alarming level” of grave violations committed by all parties and the fact that children “continue to bear the brunt of the armed conflict.” - AP

Time to look at how we’re voting C
onsider this a public service announcement. There will be no voting booths open next Saturday for you to cast your votes in this year’s local elections. None, nothing, zilch. That’s not how it works. Unfortunately. I’m probably speaking to the converted a little bit, but the number of people who have told me this week they’ll wait until they get to the voting booth before they make their final decision has been a little bit alarming. Unlike the General Elections, we don’t go the booths as such for the local stuff. We fill out mailed out voting forms and either drop them off or send them back. And today is the day that
we are all supposed to do it, if we haven’t already. But the misconception does beg the question as to why we don’t do it the traditional way. And then, even further more, why both the General Elections and the Local Government Elections aren’t done at the same time and in the same manner. Obviously the timing makes
things a little difficult – but surely the prospect of not only going to the booth to vote for what’s going on nationally but also locally would be far more enticing for potential voters. I look at our 53 per cent voter turnout at the last Local Government Elections three years ago and ponder how we can do more. How can we get more people to cast a vote and how can we strive to get that number up and around where it should be to get the best possible outcome. Combining the two elections into one could be a step forward in that sense. Basically it’s another couple of boxes to tick. Another few candidates to choose and little extra effort in
the big scheme of things. It was suggested by someone, who I ran this idea past, that local elections would become overshadowed by the General Election if that change was to be enforced. But I’m not 100 per cent sure I agree. I would hazard a guess that people seem to be more in tune with what is happening in their own area of the country and are influenced by decisions that will directly impact them when it comes to thinking about which boxes to tick. Or perhaps the problem is even simpler. The process of sending mail is a bit of a foreign prospect to a good portion of the community.
We, and I say we because I’m part of that generation, deal in a digital age and are much more open to doing things from the comfort of the computer screen or the cellphone. Introduce a method in which these things can be done digitally and I think the numbers would also skyrocket just through ease of access. We’re on track this year here locally to get close to if not finish just above the 53 per cent we gained at our last round of local government elections but should we really be happy with that. That’s pretty much half of our vote eligible community who aren’t voting. I’d suggest we shouldn’t be that happy about it.

Proud as Kiwi bro

ne of the more ridiculous letters to be published in the Guardian appeared on Wednesday. Penned by Allan Andrews, it claimed New Zealand was a nation we could no longer be proud of. Mr Andrews trotted out an unsubstantiated claim that 60 per

I’m proud to be part of a nation that recognises we didn’t keep the faith in terms of the Treaty of Waitangi, and have made attempts to rectify past mistakes. Mr Andrews believes the first 180 years were good, and then it went downhill two years ago. I’m not sure the 15 per cent or 600,000 Maori New Zealanders would agree with that. I’m proud we have a bi-cultural heritage and even though it redesigns my warehouse undies to speak Te Reo, I’m proud many people try to understand and
begin to know Te Ao Maori. I’m proud that this nation contributed and continues to contribute to global issues and events. Whether it has been through our armed services, our humanitarian responses, our export of goods, technology and solutions, or on the world’s sports stage. New Zealand will never be known as a nation that does not contribute. Locally, I’m very proud to be part of Ashburton. This is a town that has thrived because of the strong rural economy. Now Mr Andrews believes that this economy is being purposely targeted. What I am proud of, is the spirit of the rural industry to tackle challenges and innovate. This paper has continuously reported many stories of local people responding to opportunities and challenges. I’m proud that there are locals here who recognise the stress our farmers face and bring it to the open and push for support. I’m proud of the many people I meet here who forge their own path. No-one said it would be easy, but there are determined business owners here who have created and continued employment for themselves and others. These are the people who always contribute prizes for Quizcos and sponsor sports shirts in schools or children performing in Children’s Theatre. These are people who volunteer in our fire brigade and sit on boards of trustees. I’m very proud to be a Kiwi when I work with teachers who care far more for children than most people realise. This care leads them to pay for
food and clothing for children in their classes. I work with teachers who worry about the welfare of their children, who put many hours of thought into planning learning that is for specific children. I also work with support staff who spend unpaid hours creating resources or learning about how to be better in their job. I’m sure education is not the only industry with these types of people. I’m proud that we have public debate about issues that would have been suppressed just a generation ago. That New Zealanders can feel comfortable enough to speak about suicide, gender identity, mental health and the treatment of those in state care, demonstrates our maturing as a nation. I’m proud that the spotlight is turned on industries as our knowledge of humankind’s impact on this earth grows. We are responsible for our actions and if the creation of policies is needed to change practice, then at least we have the opportunity to speak out against them. In my short time as a school leader affected by political ideology, I can safely say that within three years of a policy being implemented, it will be modified. Politicians can’t leave major policy, good or bad, alone. The fabric of this nation is not being torn by a few sandle-wearing lefties, it is being rewoven time and time again by the many good people of this district. This is a place of great people and ever-evolving opportunities. Change is the one constant we can rely on and how we respond defines our character. If Mr Andrews cannot see what there is to be proud of as a New Zealander, then I hear that Pitcairn Island needs a groundskeeper.

Aiming high at school nationals By Erin Tasker

Maintaining momentum has been the key for Ashburton College’s A netballers since they qualified for the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Netball Championships. And it hasn’t been easy, given the time that’s elapsed since they gained qualification by finishing fourth at the South Island event. That was back in early September and the national event starts on Tuesday – more than a month later – at the same venue as the South Island tournament, in Nelson. That South Island tournament came just a few days after College A claimed the Mid Canterbury Netball premier one crown with a win over Celtic A in the final. The young College girls were playing a lot of netball, and playing it well. But that was essentially the end of the regular netball season. So with that place sealed at the national tournament, the Kaye Kennedy-coached side needed game time and set about finding some. Now, just a couple of days out from the tournament getting under way in Nelson, they’re as ready as they’ll ever be. They’ve played in a mini-tournament with the three other Canterbury teams that qualified for nationals, local players have helped out by providing games and on Thursday night they finished their build-up with a game at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre against another nationals contender, St Margaret’s, which has former Silver Fern Julie Seymour as part of their coaching line-up. It was a game played over six 10-minute periods and for Kennedy it wasn’t about the score, it was about getting things right before the biggest test in the young playing careers of the Ashburton College girls. Ashburton College will play Whanganui High School – the team that finished third in the lower North Island tournament – on Tuesday morning, followed by

what will be their toughest test in the afternoon. Their pool - pool A – includes the upper North Island tournament winners, St Kentigern College, and Ashburton College have them in game two. They’ll then finish pool play against Epsom Girls’ Grammar School – the team that came fifth in the upper North Island tournament – on Wednesday, before the
tournament heads into crossover play, with all roads leading to the big final on Friday at 1.40pm. Kennedy said her team has goals, but rather than where they finish, their goals related more to how many goals they want to score each quarter and limiting the opposition. Going to nationals is a fantastic opportunity and while the girls
know it will be tough, they’re determined to give it their all. “We aren’t just going up there for the experience, we want to perform well,” Kennedy said. For the side’s Year 13 players, the national event will be the final time they play netball for their school and the team want to do well for them, and for themselves. “It may be the only time that
most of these players will get that opportunity, so we’ve got to make the most of it,” Kennedy said. “We just need to go into every game and take it to them, and try our best.” Ashburton College last attended the nationals in 2017, when another team pulled out, but until this year, the last time they’d officially qualified was in 2002.

Mid Canterbury head to Oamaru today with nothing to lose but everything to gain in the penultimate round of rugby’s Heartland Championship. North Otago will play host to Mid Canterbury this afternoon and while it’s another game that will be far from easy at the tail end of a season where wins have been hard to come by for the Hammers, there’s a trophy on the line and a top eight finish is still within reach. Mid Canterbury coach Dale Palmer said his players will rise to the occasion. He said they’ve trained well this week and are determined to produce a performance that will see them return home with the Hanan Shield for the first time in three years. “Going into this game we will obviously be underdogs, but it’s always a fierce contest between us, South Canterbury and North Otago, so I’m sure the boys will lift for it,” Palmer said. Heading into the clash Mid Canterbury are second-to-last on the Heartland Championship table, with just one win on the board and only East Coast behind them. North Otago are up the other end, currently occupying fourth spot, with South Canterbury and West Coast tied at the top and Thames Valley third. After next week’s final games, the competition will split into the Meads Cup (top four) and Lochore Cup (fifth to eighth) semi-finals. Mid Canterbury are still a chance of making the Lochore Cup semis, but to do it they’ll need to beat both North Otago today and Wairarapa Bush next week. Palmer knows it won’t be easy, but he also knows he and cocoach Jason Rickard have got a good team and the position Mid Canterbury find themselves in has not come through a lack of trying. They lost it to South Canterbury on October 15, 2016 and today they’re looking to get it back with a team featuring a couple of changes from the one that lost to Thames Valley last weekend. For the first time this season, Palmer and Rickard have had to make a change to their front row,
with Sorby Sorvea unavailable and Adam Williamson coming in to start in his place. Palmer said Williamson has been making a big impact off the bench this season and is a good Mid Canterbury man, so the start was just reward for him. There’s also changes on both flanks, with Kody Nordqvist coming in for an injured Tom Blyth, while Seta Koroitamana returns to his preferred seven jersey today after filling a gap in the midfield last weekend. Also making a return is first-five Corey McKay, who sprained his ankle against Poverty Bay a fortnight ago, while Timoci Nabakeke will start at centre in place of an unavailable Josh McAtamney, and flying Zimbabwean Brian Matoramusha gets his second start of the season on the wing.

All Blacks team to face Namibia NZME Jordie Barrett will pull on the All Blacks No. 10 jersey for the first time, with Steve Hansen opting for the versatile Hurricane to play at first-five against Namibia tomorrow. With Richie Mo’unga and Beauden Barrett rested for the clash after both started against Canada on Wednesday, Jordie Barrett will steer the All Blacks around the field, with TJ Perenara his back-up on the bench. “Jordie can play multiple positions in the backline and we’re confident that he’ll handle the responsibility well. “He has all the skill-sets required and we’re looking forward to seeing him play there,” Hansen said. Aoraki grand finals spot on the line By Erin Tasker

One Mid Canterbury team will feature in next weekend’s Aoraki Rugby League grand final, it’s just a matter of which one. Today at Rakaia, we’ll find out, when the Rakaia Domain hosts a much anticipated semi-final between the Chertsey Oilers and the Ashburton Barbarians. The winner will head south next weekend to take on the Country Cowboys in the Duncan McGregor Memorial Cup final. On form and the fact they have home ground advantage, the Oilers head into the semi-final as the favourites, but at the same time, no one knows better than the Oilers that you can never write the Barbarians off. The Aoraki competition is short and sharp. With just four teams – the Oilers and the Barbarians from Mid Canterbury, and the Country Cowboys and the Timaru Outlaws from South Canterbury – it’s a three-week round robin, which this year was three weeks of double-headers in Geraldine, Rakaia and Timaru. The top team from those three rounds goes straight to the final, leaving two to play three to find the second team for the big dance. For the competition’s newest team, the Chertsey Oilers, 2019 has been their year. They’ve won two and drawn one – their last game against the Country Cowboys - but had to settle for second spot on the ladder after having to forfeit their points from round one
due to fielding an ineligible player in their win over the Outlaws. That win over the Outlaws, though, was the first in the club’s history. They then followed that up with a win over the Barbarians at the Rakaia Domain in round two, and today the two teams will be back at the Rakaia Domain for another showdown. The Oilers may have come out on top that day, but the Barbarians have built since then, picking up their first win of the competition last weekend, beating the Outlaws 34-22. While the Barbarians play all season, playing in the earlier Canterbury Rugby League division one competition, that didn’t give them much of an advantage over teams like the Oilers, who only played in the Aoraki competition. That’s because the timing of the Aoraki league competition, after the club rugby season finishes, means that there’s a few new league players around. Some of the Barbarians moved over to the Oilers and both sides picked up some rugby players looking to give league a crack. So it was like starting over for the Barbarians and although they won the Aoraki competition last year, this year they took a while to settle. The Oilers won that last game against the Barbarians 36-20, but the Barbarians never gave up and never went away, and today will be much of the same. Today’s semi-final kicks off at the Rakaia Domain at 1.30pm.

Raiders ready for drinks It has been 25 long years since the Raiders last tasted premiership glory, only 12 months for the Roosters, but one of these proud clubs will be lifting the Provan-Summons Trophy at ANZ Stadium tomorrow. The Raiders seemed to be on the verge of something special three years ago when they finished second, but they lost to Melbourne in the preliminary final and fell short of the finals in 2017 and 2018. Now the Raiders are back in the premiership decider and hungry for success after knocking out the Rabbitohs 16-10 in last week’s preliminary final. In the red, white and blue corner are the Roosters, who are shooting for back-toback titles after accounting for Melbourne in the other preliminary final.
The Chooks, who are chasing their fourth premiership in 18 years, will welcome back prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves from suspension. The Roosters are confident hooker Jake Friend and playmaker Luke Keary will be both back from injury to take the paddock. Meanwhile, Raiders’ coach Ricky Stuart has the luxury of naming the same 17 which got past Souths in the preliminary final. Canberra forward John Bateman was taken ill this week before Thursday’s training, but the Englishman is expcted to return for today’s captain’s run, while Josh Hodgson has recovered from the stomach bug that kept him away from training and media duties earlier in the week.

Title up for grabs for golfers
Doubles tennis as the sun sets Lining up a forehand return during the opening night of the Mid Canterbury Tennis Sunset Doubles competition on Thursday night was Ruapuna’s Andrew Lake. The popular competition, which sees teams of four play only doubles on Thursday nights at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre, has experienced a rare drop in numbers this season, but there’s still 31 teams taking part. Second spot for Ashburton College shooters Ashburton College’s team of gun shooters have had to settle for second spot at the national secondary schools’ shoot in Wellington. Held last weekend, the national event saw the Ashburton trio of Shania Harrison-Lee (captain), Emma Smith and Charlotte McKenzie line up against 20 other teams from schools around the country at the Royal Tiger Range in Newtown, to contest the Eddie Love Cup. After leading for two-thirds of the match, Ashburton College was just pipped at the post by Palmerston North Boys’ High School. Team manager Nina McKenzie said with
two experienced members and a new face, the team worked with real determination to achieve a fantastic result among very strong, and experienced, competition from around the country. After the three target (300.30) schools’ match, the top 12 qualifiers from each island were selected for the their respective island teams, with all three Ashburton College members being selected for the South Island team to compete against the North, in a two target match (200.20). Harrison-Lee captained the South side that was narrowly pipped by the North, but from the aggregate of those matches the
New Zealand Secondary team was selected, and Harrison-Lee and Smith were both selected, with Harrison-Lee again the captain. The New Zealand team then had a postal shoot against the Great Britain schools’ team, the results of which are not yet known, while the other competitors shot a plate match in a variety of selected teams. The national secondary schools’ shoot completed the indoor season for Target Shooting Mid Canterbury’s secondary members, but already they are thinking about going back to go one better at next year’s event, which will be hosted closer to home at Blenheim.
Four Mid Canterbury golfers are off to Timaru this weekend with a South Island title firmly in their sights. The four players make up the majority of the Aorangi golf team which will be contesting the Masters South Island Interprovincials at the Timaru Golf Club and hopes are high that they’ll be able to make the most of the home-course advantage and take it out. The team’s top two players are from the Tinwald Golf Club – Nigel Heney and Regan Stills – while Ashburton’s Blair Franklin will play at three and Andrew Peck from the Mayfield Golf Club will play at four. Geraldine’s Jason Leary is the side’s number five and Ray Grant of Timaru is six. The tournament will see the South Island’s best golfers, aged over 40, descend on Timaru for the annual tournament. Aorangi and Canterbury head into the tournament as the joint defending champions, after both finished equal on points at the 2018 event held at the Pegasus Golf Club. Aorangi and Canterbury have already played each other this summer, in an annual representative match at the Ashburton Golf Club a couple of weeks ago. There - for the first time in a number of years Canterbury came out on top in the masters matches. So Aorangi will have a score to settle this weekend, but it’s not just Canterbury they have to worry about. Otago, Southland and Tasman have also brought some strong teams to South Canterbury this weekend and all are keen to get their names etched onto the trophy. The interprovincial tournament will be contested over 72 holes, with each province playing each other in a teams match play format. For most of those playing, the event will be a warm-up to the NZ Golf Freyberg Masters which is also being held at the Timaru course in a month.
