Ashburton Library could become tourist information site

When Ashburton’s new library is built, providing information about the Ashburton District could become part of its growing range of services, says district librarian Jill Watson.

With Experience Mid Canterbury opting to close Ashburton’s i-SITE, Watson said it was important there was a central point where people could obtain information about the district.

That place could be the district’s new library, she said.

She’s aware of a number of other libraries that are multiple information sources.

With the library’s free internet service well-used by tourists, it might be a logical move to establish some form of information kiosk there as well, Watson said.

The library’s hours were much longer than the original i-SITE hours and if the council wanted to see an information base of some kind at the library, Watson said she would welcome the idea.

“It’s certainly worth exploring as a concept and before we put up a new building we have to look ahead and see what could be coming up in the future and what might be required.”

A library’s business was providing information of all kinds and information for tourists about the district would be just one more service, she said.

“In simple terms it’s about getting information out there and that’s what we’re doing now.”

information site, but council environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson said tight resource consent conditions on the building determined the business that could operate from the site and the amount of traffic

Experience Mid Canterbury intends to close Ashburton’s i-SITE and reduce the hours at Methven as it redirects money from this service into other areas of tourism promotion.

The booking service previously provided by the i-SITE is now being provided by Ashburton House of Travel, but there is no central point that provides information on the district for tourists.

had quite a quick change in our ethnic makeup.”

While migrants were filling many vacancies, productivity in many sectors was limited by the inability to fill staff vacancies, she said.

“Many of our big employers say their payroll is now 30 per cent immigrants. Where are the New Zealanders? They’re fully employed.”

opportunity available to sell itself and tell its story to the rest of New Zealand, Favel said.

“You can buy three houses in Ashburton for the price of one in Auckland, a traffic jam is only five minutes and we have plenty of jobs; our employers are struggling to get employees.

“We’ve got really stable employers, they’re open and generous and

we’re a welcoming community.”

It might have created a bit of an online log jam, but because there was no single, central job centre in Ashburton, Favel said she was happy for her Facebook page to fill that gap.

“Anyone in New Zealand who wants a job can go to the Donna Favel Facebook page. At least there’s a point of contact now.”

Wonky Donkey show captivates youthful audience

Dozens of youngsters gathered in the Sinclair Centre yesterday morning to be transported to the whimsical realms of the Wonky Donkey man.

Acclaimed children’s book author and performer Craig Smith staged a school holiday show featuring puppetry, song and storytelling.

As Smith strummed on his guitar, he invited the crowd to sing, clap and dance along.

Smith is Queenstown-based but has earned worldwide success with his storybooks The Wonky Donkey, Willbee the Bumblebee and Kaha the Kea, which have sold nearly a million copies worldwide.

Smith has also released four successful albums.

A book called The Scariest Thing in the Garden is Smith’s latest masterpiece, produced in conjunction with illustrator Scott Tulloch.

Smith is travelling New Zealand holding shows for three months to celebrate its launch.

Our Place project taken to heart

With two weeks left to run in round one of consultation, the community is taking the Ashburton District Council’s Our Place project to its heart.

The council is walking a new path as it starts reviewing its long-term plan and has asked residents to come up with ideas and suggestions for the new developments and projects.

Those ideas will be collated

and will then go back out for a second round of community input.

And two weeks down the track, the project is gaining momentum, council community relations manager Vincie Billante said.

“We’ve had several hundred responses so far and there have been a lot of good ideas. One of the things that’s come out is that people say there is a lack of really good promotion for the district,

it’s become a bit of a common theme,” she said.

To build awareness of the project, council staff will be setting up pop-up booths around the district next week.

“We’re doing this because it’s so important we get as many people involved in this process as possible,” Billante said.

“It’s a chance for people to say what they think and what they want.”

To ensure a wide cross sec-

tion of ages were involved, the council is also targeting specific groups such as secondary school students and the elderly.

“We want responses from across the district and it doesn’t matter how wild they are, how big or how much of an out-there concept it is.”

The council’s long-term plan spells out how rates money will be spent over the coming 10 years.

It covers infrastructural pro-

jects as well as the construction of community facilities such as the EA Networks Centre and the new civic centre and library.

Rather than building a plan based on councillor and staff ideas, this time round the council has opted to go to the community first and ask for their ideas.

Stage two will see community ideas collated and will ask for feedback on these and stage three will see the key ideas listed with costings.

Pop-up shop proves popular

When Jen Dearborn and Vashti Johnstone set up a pop-up art exhibition in central Methven this week, they hoped anyone would feel welcome to drop in, pick up a paintbrush and give art a go.

That’s exactly what’s happened, with the Methven Mall site luring a steady stream of visitors.

“We’ve had people coming in, remarking on what a lovely space it is and how cosy it is, and lots of people coming back after they’ve been once,” Johnstone said.

During the exhibition’s open hours the duo have not only been selling new and old works, but pottering away on pieces in progress, giving mono-printing demonstrations, and helping people with artistic queries.

“We had one woman come twice and tell us she felt that she’d just learnt so much about art, just by being here and seeing us work – and that’s just what we want, really.”

Alongside many of their own works is a communal canvas, consisting of colourful contributions from dozens of visitors.

“It’s getting hard to tell what each person has added,” Dearborn said.

House prices slump After months of climbing, house prices in the Ashburton District appear to be on a slow, downward slide.

QV figures show the average price of a house sold in the district has dropped over the past 12 months by 2.2 per cent to sit at $345,070.

There is, however, negligible change in prices over the past three months.

The district is in good company across the South Island in watching prices either drop or remain static, with only the Mackenzie showing any significant growth – up 28.3 per cent over the past 12 months and 5.7 per cent over three months.

Most centres south of Timaru are watching prices climb, with Queenstown Lakes maintaining its position as the most expensive place to buy a home with an average selling price of $1.079 million.

For more than 55 years the Diabetes New Zealand’s Ashburton branch filled a valuable role as a community support group for diabetics and their families.

But dwindling active membership meant the organisation has made a tough call, it’s going out of business.

In August chairperson Denise Wells signalled the group was likely to fold but said it would be up to members at the annual meeting to make that call. And they did. The 15 who attended all voted in favour of dissolving the Ashburton branch.

While the group had 62 members on its books, few turned up to meetings and fewer were willing to be on its committee. Meetings were often cancelled through lack of support.

Ashburton is not alone in considering dissolving its branch.

Timaru’s has already gone and some in the North Island are barely hanging on.

While there is no longer a Diabetes New Zealand branch in Ashburton, members intend to meet for morning coffee on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Columbus and people wanting support and information are encouraged to become members of either Christchurch Diabetes or Diabetes New Zealand.

Funds remaining in the now defunct branch have been given to charity.

McDonald’s Ashburton now holds second place in the country for the most cars through a drive-thru in an hour.

In an attempt to join the McDonald’s elite, global 100 Car Club and earn a plaque for their restaurant wall, McDonald’s Ashburton put out the call to drivers to join the drive-thru between 6pm and 7pm last Thursday.

“The 100 Car Club was something we’d been hunting for a while,” McDonald’s Ashburton owner Dave Whalley said.

“We’d tried a couple of times but ran out of cars.”

After days of preparation, practice runs and planning, he said the team set a date

and “just went all out”.

One hundred and eighty-six drivers successfully made it through at an average of 19 seconds per order, putting McDonald’s Ashburton in second place nationally behind the McDonald’s franchise in Hastings.

Customers could order anything from frozen cokes to full family meals, multiple orders from one vehicle were counted as one car through, but cars could return for a second order after going through once.

Whalley said weeks of preparation went into the attempt, with staff working extra hard to advertise, hand-out vouchers and ensure supplies were well-stocked.

“We even did a practice run,” he said.

The nearest other McDonald’s restaurant in the 100 Car Club is McDonald’s Rolleston.

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is joining the likes of Mount Rushmore in the United States and the ancient Roman city of Pompeii in being preserved through digital mapping.

The work will be done by US non-profit organisation CyArk, which specialises in heritage sites of global significance The aim is to make them available to future generations through an online 3D library.

The mapping of the treaty grounds and heritage buildings in the Bay of Islands will take place over two weeks this summer.

In a project supported by Air New Zealand, laser scanning, photogrammetry and drone imagery will be use to create a detailed surface map.

“Our cultural identity is a key element of both our nation’s history and of our tourism proposition,” airline chief executive Christopher Luxon said.

Luxon said the completed digital content would be gifted to Waitangi for use in Te Kongahu – Museum of Waitangi and on its website.

Dust off those clubs and give golf a go

If you want to give golf a go then three golf clubs in the Ashburton District are offering you a chance to have a game for just $10.

Over the daylight saving period, the Methven, Tinwald and Rakaia clubs will be holding social Sundays to encourage casual golfers to head out onto the course to play as many or as few holes as they want.

The social Sunday events will run on the second Sunday of each month and are all about enjoying golf in a relaxed atmosphere.

The event is the brainchild of Methven’s Barry Wackwitz who said the day was about getting new and casual golfers onto the course in a way that showed golf was fun and that clubs were welcoming and inclusive rather than stereotypically fussy, he said.

All three clubs will charge the same price, $10, and will open their bar and turn on a barbecue during the afternoon.

Players can choose to play at any time from early morning and can play as many or as few holes as they want.

For all clubs it was important to encourage new and younger members into the game, Wackwitz said.

“With memberships in decline the casual golf market is really important for the future of clubs, as green fee players now, and as future members” To gain maximum enjoyment from the game, casual golfers needed opportunities to develop the skills needed to play and enjoy the game before they become members, and clubs needed to facilitate that, he said.

Two gang members found guilty Two Auckland gang members accused of beating a young prospect to death in a bid to “harden him up” have been found guilty of murder.

Clayton Ratima, 24, was declared brain dead and died after being dropped off at Middlemore Hospital in February last year.

A jury yesterday found Tribesmen gang members Denis Solomon, 32, and Vincent Mana George, 33, both guilty of Ratima’s murder after two weeks of evidence.

The courtroom in the High Court at Auckland was otherwise silent as the verdicts were read, supporters in the public gallery simply shaking their heads and quietly crying.

“We love you, Mana,” one said as the pair were led away.

During the trial, the Crown argued the pair attempted to coax prospective member Ratima – who was manning the gate of the

As the reluctant pair failed to land blows in a messy exchange, the two accused men grew frus-

trated and launched a savage attack on Ratima, prosecutors said.

At 190cm tall and weighing 130kg, Ratima was an imposing figure.

But witnesses described him as a “gentle giant” and prosecutors said the two attackers knew that, as a prospect, he would never hit back.

Shortly after the beating, the pair went to a “gentlemen’s club” in central Auckland, leaving others to take Ratima to the emergency department with two fractures in his neck and a swollen brain.

Later, Solomon would ask younger gang members to take the rap for the killing, offering them a motorbike and cash, according to a statement by an associate to police.

But Solomon’s lawyer, Shane Tait, attacked this testimony and that of many other gang associates in the trial.

The defence said a key witness, the man told to fight Ratima, was very drunk at the time, and had initially not even mentioned the defendants to police – only changing his story later to protect himself.

The Crown had built its case on unreliable witnesses and fell well short of proving the men took part in the attack, George’s lawyer, Adam Simperingham, told the jury.

After not completing his first year of high school, Ratima fell in with the Tribesmen while changing tyres for a living in Otara.

Members of the gang attended his funeral, leaving a patch on his coffin, to the dismay of family, Walker told the court.

Solomon and George will be sentenced in November.

Civil defence apologises for alert Civil Defence has apologised after jolting Kiwis out of bed with an accidental overnight test of its new text warning system.

New Zealanders across the country were woken about 1.30am yesterday by a series of alerts – including with a loud ring tone – but not over any natural disaster.

Rather, the messages just said the system was being tested, prompting plenty of angry activity on social media in the middle of the night.

Civil Defence director Sarah Stuart-Black has apologised, saying there had been an error.

“Our provider, who is European-based, sends out messages.

They were supposed to be in a contained environment. There was an error in the system,” she told TVNZ yesterday morning.

“I’m just so sorry to everybody who was woken in fright.”

She said it was still unclear how widespread the message had been, but that it depended on phone providers and the kind

While the service would be tested again before launching later this year – this would be done with plenty of warning and at a more reasonable time, Stuart- Black said.

Telco provider Vodafone said its customers were among those receiving the alerts but said it was important “to clarify the ministry take full responsibility

“It was accidentally initiated by one of the ministry’s overseas technology suppliers, and not Vodafone or any of the other ISPs involved in the project,” the company said.

It said it would continue working with Civil Defence to ready the potentially life-saving alert system for use before the end of the year.

Fun events to mark quake anniversary Kaikoura residents are set to put a happy spin on last year’s devastating earthquake by marking it with a range of fun community activities.

These include an exhibition by the Kaikoura Museum, a community concert, shared church service, charity fight night and even a local version of the popular Ninja Warrior competition.

The events run all through next month after the 7.8-magnitude quake struck almost one year ago on November 14, causing destruction as far afield from Kaikoura as Christchurch and Wellington.

Two people died at the time, with the quake cutting-off Kaikoura by destroying the rail line and roads leading into the town and causing more than $1.8 billion in insurance damage.

But with the first freight train running through the town again in September and hopes of re-opening the damaged

State Highway 1 coastal route soon, Kaikoura locals are hoping to bring tourists back to the town this summer season.

The Kaikoura Trotting Club kicks off the celebrations on Marlborough Anniversary weekend on October 29 to 30 with its popular annual race meet, before local community groups and school kids tell their experiences during and after the quake in an exhibition run by the Kaikoura Museum on November 4 and November 13-15.

A free community concert named Shaken Not Stirred will be held on November 11, while the anniversary of the quake will be marked with a reopening of the town’s harbour facilities and a community picnic.

Other events include a Kaikoura Rumble charity fight night on November 18 and a fun run and Kaikoura Warrior obstacle course event on November 19.

Winslet joins Avatar It’s a titanic reunion — Kate Winslet is joining the Avatar franchise, reuniting the actress with Titanic director James Cameron. A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox confirmed the news yesterday. According to Deadline, Winslet will be playing a character named Ronal, but no word on just how many of the films she’ll be part of. Cameron said that they had been looking to work together again for 20 years. Four Avatar sequels are planned to be released in December of 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025.

Gunman moved cash The Las Vegas gunman transferred $100,000 overseas in the days before the attack and planned the massacre so meticulously that he even set up cameras inside the peephole of his high-rise hotel room and on a service cart outside his door, apparently to spot anyone coming for him, authorities said.

Meanwhile, investigators are taking a harder look at the shooter’s girlfriend and what she might have known about the attack at a country music festival, with the sheriff naming her a “person of interest” The girlfriend, Marilou Danley, 62, returned to the United States from the Philippines yesterday and was met at Los Angeles International Airport by FBI agents, according to a law enforcement official.

The official wasn’t authorised to publicly discuss the matter and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Authorities are trying to determine why Stephen Paddock killed 59 people in the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.

They have been speaking with Danley, who was out the country at the time of the shooting, and “we anticipate some infor-

mation from her shortly,” Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said hours before she arrived.

Lombardo said he is “absolutely” confident authorities will find out what set off Paddock, a 64-year-old high-stakes gambler and retired accountant who killed himself before police stormed his 32ndfloor room.

Authorities released police body camera video that showed the chaos of the attack as officers tried to figure out the location of the shooter and shuttle people to safety.

Amid sirens and volleys of gunfire, people yelled “they’re shooting right at us” while officers shouted “go that way!”

Clark County Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said the shooting spanned between nine and 11 minutes.

Paddock transferred $100,000 to the Philippines in the days before the shooting, a US official briefed by law enforcement but not authorised to speak publicly because of the continuing investigation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Investigators are still trying to trace that money and also looking into a least a dozen financial reports over the past several

weeks that said Paddock gambled more than $10,000 per day, the official said.

The cameras Paddock set up at the Mandalay Bay hotel casino were part of his extensive preparations that included stockpiling nearly two dozen guns in his room before opening fire on the concert below.

McMahill said the cameras included one in the peephole and two in the hallway.

“I anticipate he was looking for anybody coming to take him into custody,” Lombardo said.

During the Sunday night rampage, a hotel security guard who approached the room was shot through the door and wounded in the leg.

“The fact that he had the type of weaponry and amount of weaponry in that room, it was preplanned extensively,” the sheriff said, “and I’m pretty sure he evaluated everything that he did and his actions, which is troublesome.”

Lombardo said the investigation is proceeding cautiously in case criminal charges are warranted against someone else.

“This investigation is not ended with the demise of Mr Paddock,” the sheriff said.

Nobel winners find ripples in the universe For decades astronomers tried to prove Albert Einstein right by doing what Einstein thought was impossible: detecting the faint ripples in the universe called gravitational waves. They failed repeatedly until two years ago when they finally spotted one. Then another. And another.

Three American scientists — including one who initially flunked out of MIT — won the Nobel Prize in physics yesterday that launched a whole new way to observe the cosmos. Sweden’s Royal Academy of Sciences cited the combination of highly advanced theory and ingenious equipment design in awarding Rainer Weiss of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

and Barry Barish and Kip Thorne of the California Institute of Technology.

“It’s a win for the human race as a whole.

These gravitational waves will be powerful ways for the human race to explore the universe,” Thorne said.

The trio were part of a team of more than 1000 astronomers who first observed gravitational waves in September 2015.

When the discovery was announced several months later, it was a sensation not only among scientists but the general public. These are waves that go through everything — including us — but carry information on them that astronomers could not get otherwise.

“The best comparison is when Galileo discovered the telescope, which allowed us to see that Jupiter had moons. And all of a sudden, we discovered that the universe was much vaster than we used to think about,” Ariel Goobar of the Swedish academy said.

Weiss said he hopes that eventually gravitational waves will help science learn about “the very moment when the universe came out of nothingness.”

Gravitational waves were first theorized a century ago by Einstein, but he didn’t think technology would ever be able to detect the tiny wobbles, smaller than a piece of an atom.

Ashburton job seekers’ mecca

here’s an old saying that any publicity is good publicity and our mayor certainly did her bit yesterday to put us right up there in the nation’s face.

And good on her. Fronting up to the media, live, is no picnic. If you get it wrong there’s nowhere to hide. Whatever you say is out there for thousands to see and hear.

But Favel did not get it wrong, she got it very right, even if it was in a roundabout kind of way.

The interviewer was keen to talk about the district’s growing number of migrants. That’s a subject Favel is passionate about. And then he wanted to talk about the district. Again something the mayor has in her heart.

What she didn’t anticipate was that when she put the case for more workers to move to the district, in that moment she’d become a one-woman employment agency. Duncan Garner asked for an 0800 number. She said potential workers should contact her.

And then she sprinted back to her office and loaded a host of links to the district’s employment sources on her Facebook page.

Her phone has been red hot; Facebook has been going gangbusters.

The lid was ripped off the district’s yawning worker shortage, with everyone from schools to factories saying they were desperate for staff.

Well over 100 jobs are going begging in the district.

The rest of the country knows what we’ve known for years – we’re a district going places but we can’t get there because there aren’t enough people to do the work.

There’s just one issue that needs to be addressed. Talk to anyone who has friends elsewhere in similar jobs and odds are that they’re earning more than their counterpart on home turf.

It’s no longer enough to say that it costs less to live in a provincial town than it does in the city. Yes, our houses are cheaper, but our rents often are not. Food often costs more and we have no public transport.

Yes, we have an amazing lifestyle but why would you do the same job in Ashburton that you could do in Wellington for more money?

Whose life is it anyway?

C

onfession: I’ve developed an aversion to walking through the Ashburton

CBD. There I go, minding my own business, when periodically I’m aware there’s a crusty old dude stalking me.

Following my every move ... everywhere.

It’s creepy.

I stare back at him, wondering what he finds so interesting that he has to follow me like this. And then in a heartbeat, I realise “he” is me.

Those large glass business frontages are reflecting the 2017 Peter Mac right back. A figure I barely recognise. How can this be? How did the 19-year-old teenager with the flared purple trousers who used to run Ashburton’s first mobile disco at functions all over town in the 70s, become the grumpy-looking, old, bearded bugger that is staring right back at me?

I turned 60 this year and Mrs Mac quickly tired of hearing about it.

I spent a lot of time as the magical date approached reflecting on my past and daring to wonder about a future. The overall feeling once the day arrived was gratitude.

A huge humbling gratitude that, for some reason, I had arrived at this rather grand age when that simple privilege is denied to so many good people.

experience but for me there was, childhood, youth, teens and 29. I mentally cast myself as a 29-year-old for decades. And then bang, here it is, SIXTY! Along the way of course, there have been many memorable and some quite forgettable moments.

Among the latter were the school days responding to peer pressure to play rugby for Tech Old Boys B. I knew nothing about the game and had sub-zero interest. But before I developed the mantra to live my own life and not someone else’s version of it, I succumbed and dutifully lined up for the Saturday afternoon games.

I became paranoid about what would happen if the ball actually should come my way. Then, one clear blue Saturday afternoon in Ashburton it happened, in the second half. The ball literally fell into my hands and I Forest Gumped it.

Not daring to look around me, I put my head down, ball tucked under my arm, ran the entire length of the field and dived between the posts. A runaway try.

The stuff of which dreams are made. That first unforgettable try. Not quite.

I hadn’t quite grasped the concept that at halftime the teams swap ends and I had actually scored a try at the wrong end of the field.

Incredibly, as I gazed into the distance where the members of both teams were gathered, noone seemed to notice or care.

Maybe it was just more than they could cope with so it was ignored. At that point I deemed my life was mine, to do with that which spun my wheels and not try to appease others.

I can remember attending friends of my parents’ 40th birthdays. Back then they seemed so old. Hell, I’m now 20 years older than they were then.

Then there was that time when I turned 40 myself, a co-worker thought it’d be a hoot to get a stripper in to do a little dance and shave my head. And then left Mrs Mac with the bill. And the entirely memorable turning-50 trip to the UK. Most of those milestones came and went without the deep sense of nostalgia and gratitude that 60 brings.

Hell, I hope I’m around for a few summers yet, but the overwhelming sense is the realisation that not everyone gets this far, and too many of my contemporaries, and younger, are falling away, people I have known personally and also the musicians who have provided

the soundtrack to my life.

Here’s a little secret.

Whether it’s a project I’m involved with (and there have been many), or life in general, I always start with a vision of the end result and work back to achieve it.

I imagine myself on the deathbed reflecting on my life. What would I want to have done that I haven’t? Then set about filling in the blanks. These days they call it a bucket-list don’t they?

The worst thing you can die with is regrets. The one thing I have absolutely no regrets about is travel. You can’t have too much of that.

But for me, most of all the best thing about turning 60 is taking comfort that I’ve (as a co-host once called it) “beat to my own drum”, haven’t followed fashions and popular expectations, written my own script and along the way tried to do the right thing, by others and myself. And tried to find some magic and peace of mind.

Why wouldn’t you?

So whose version of your life are you living?

If you want it bad enough, it’s never too late too change.

Aiming for 200 new apprentices

A Federated Farmers roadshow launching a new dairy apprenticeship rolled into Templeton yesterday.

Federated Farmers and Primary ITO have teamed up for the initiative, which is designed to produce more capable people for the dairy industry.

The four-stop roadshow, which is also taking in Hamilton, Wellington and Invercargill, is designed to spread the word throughout the dairy industry, so as many prospective apprentices and employers will hear about the programme. The target is for about 200 new apprentices on-farm across the country over coming months.

The apprenticeship will be made up of formal training and qualifications, and upskilling through on-the-job training that aligns with farmers’ requirements and regional needs. It will last three years.

Federated Farmers Dairy Industry Group Chairperson Chris Lewis said both Federated Farmers and Primary ITO had key roles to play in supporting the apprenticeship.

“We’re both playing to our strengths and it’s a great fit,” he said.

Federated Farmers will identify dairy farm employers and ensure they are equipped to offer a quality work environment, while actively supporting the onjob training and development of their apprentice.

Primary ITO will recruit the apprentices and arrange the formal training towards the NZQA-recognised qualifications.

They will also support the apprenticeship through regular farm visits to ensure everything is on-track, providing extra assistance as needed.

Political uncertainty battering exchange rates

P

olitical uncertainty is never a good thing when it comes to exchange rates and that’s the unfortunate position New Zealand finds itself in postelection.

This week opened with the New Zealand dollar trading around the 0.7200 level against the US dollar. On Wednesday morning it had fallen to 0.71 during early trading, with it looking like it will slip further.

While part of that fall was likely due to an unexpected fall in prices during the latest Global Dairy Trade auction overnight on Tuesday, instead of a predicted 6 per cent rise, uncertainty over who will form the next government is not helping farmers either.

With that uncertainty likely to continue for another week, as the current timeline is telling us the final special vote count will not be known until October 12, farmers will be nervously looking over their shoulder to see if the exchange rate falls even further.

Unfortunately, if you’re looking at Forex (FX), the largest, most liquid current market in the world, the news is not good.

Earlier this week FX said that it was hard to be bullish about the New Zealand dollar, even if the fundamentals remain supportive.

“The downside remains favoured and we look for 0.7150 later in the week should upcoming US data re-

main solid,” it reported.

Whether we like it or not, currency investors, like any other investors, like certainty.

They want to know, as far as is possible, concrete information about the market they are investing in and how outlying influences, policies and trade-offs may influence that further down the track.

Governments play a big part in that.

That’s why farmers, and other exporters rely on the strength of the New Zealand dollar, need some certainty as to the political climate they will be operating under as soon as possible.

Sooner rather than later.

So, despite what Winston says about having the best interests of the country as a whole at heart, the reality is, the more he dallies in his decisions, the more it’s going to hit farmers, and the exportrelated companies they supply, bottom lines.

And that’s no good to any of us.

Sheep and beef profits forecast to improve

Contest to celebrate 50th The New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year competition is celebrating a special anniversary as it moves into its 50th contest season.

Beginning on Saturday in Lincoln and Fairlie, district contest and skills days for the contest will take place all over New Zealand, before regional finals begin in February and the 50th anniversary grand final takes place in July.

The Aorangi North district contest and skills day, which covers Mid Canterbury, is being held at the Pendarves Hall on October 14.

Building on last year’s record number of entrants and female competitors, contest organisers believe the enticement of being the 50th FMG Young Farmer of the Year will be a drawcard for an even wider field this year.

Contest chairman and former grand finalist, Dean Rabbidge, said the FMG Young Farmer of the Year was in good heart and remained an iconic event in New Zealand agriculture.

“For 49 years we have seen New Zealand’s top agricultural leaders fight it out for the much sought-after title. It is an honour that can never be revoked and with only 49 names on the winners’ board, you can be sure that the competition will be as hot as ever, to be named, the 50th champion.”

Rabbidge said the contest, which started out as a national radio quiz in 1969, had undergone many changes but the challenge remained the same.

“It’s the challenge second to none and

remains the pinnacle of achievement. We are proud of the history and contribution the contest has made to New Zealand agriculture and I’m sure this year will be no exception.”

In a new innovation this year, district contest and skills days will see pairs competing side by side, as a way of encouraging more members to “have a go”. Those competing in pairs will not be eligible to compete in regional finals, but instead will be able to split practical modules and encourage each other.

“We are all about showcasing agriculture to the next generation and introducing pairs will allow everyone to have a go at the contest while at the same time learning about the importance of agriculture, including the careers it offers.”

The grand final, where the top seven contestants around the country compete against each other, will be hosted by Invercargill and will feature many special celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary, including an exhibition of memorabilia and a function to celebrate past winners and grand finalists.

Among those finalists have been regional councillors, MPs, Nuffield Scholars and industry leaders.

It would be a special event, Rabbidge said.

“The deep south has always had a special relationship to the contest and many winners have come from our region. There is already excitement building around Invercargill and we know it will attract huge crowds.”

As the 2017-18 meat export season begins, Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s New Season Outlook 2017-18 report forecasts beef and lamb prices to remain similar to the previous season despite an expected weakening of the New Zealand Dollar.

The report estimates farm profit before tax to increase 6.6 per cent to $84,600 for 2017-18 on average for New Zealand sheep and beef farms.

“This outlook sets the scene for steady meat prices and production in 2017-18.

However, strong improvements are expected in revenue from deer and velvet, as production increases, and from wool, which is coming off low prices,” B+LNZ chief economist Andrew Burtt said.

Earnings before interest, tax, rent and manager’s salary (EBITRM) per farm, which provides a benchmark for viewing farms on a comparable base, is forecast to increase by 3.1 per cent to $158,800.

“A slight drop in the national sheep flock was driven by a drop in breeding ewes, but this was tempered by a lift in the number of hoggets, particularly on the East Coast of the North Island.”

A rise in the number of beef cattle (+2.8 per cent) was largely driven by weaner cattle being carried over into the 2017-18 farming year in response to good feed conditions and firm prices, which were due to tighter availability and strong store cattle prices in 2016-17.

“As beef cattle prices have continued at comfortable levels and production conditions have improved, some farmers have been motivated to increase the number of beef cattle they have because cattle are less labour-intensive than sheep.”

Burtt says much of the outlook depends on the value of the New Zealand dollar, which is expected to ease as major trading economies strengthen in 2017-18.

The New Zealand dollar strengthened in 2016-17, to average 0.71 cents against the US dollar, up 3 cents on the previous season.

“The US dollar is significant for New Zealand’s export-focused sheep and beef industry because 70 per cent of meat export volume is sold in USD-denominated transactions.”

Total farm expenditure is forecast to rise marginally (+0.5 per cent) this season.

Though fertiliser prices are expected to remain steady, a lift in spending on fertiliser is expected as farmers continue to focus on improving their soils’ productive capacity.

The increase is expected to outweigh a reduction in expenditure on interest, and repairs and maintenance.

Much of the 6.6 per cent increase in the average farm profit before tax on sheep and beef farms results from revenue of deer and velvet (+10 per cent), wool (+10 per cent) and cash crops (+4.8 per cent).

Sheep and beef revenue are expected to remain similar as small increases in production and easing exchange rates counter softening export prices.

Burtt said that while there were disruptions to the international beef market in 2016-17, demand is expected to remain reasonable this year, driven by China.

Continuing tight sheepmeat supplies in Australia and New Zealand, particularly mutton, are expected to support prices exchange rates the prime uncertainty.

Export lamb production is forecast to increase marginally (+0.5 per cent) in 201718. While exports to the EU, including the UK, dropped in 2016 17, the EU accounted for 36 per cent of exports and remained greater than China. However, China remained the largest single country market for New Zealand lamb, accounting for 33 per cent of volume.

New Zealand beef production is expected to be down slightly (0.9 per cent) on last season as the average carcass weight is forecast to be lower.

In 2016-17, the share of New Zealand beef exports to the US decreased to 48 per cent but increased slightly to China, which is the second largest market.

Countdown to drop plastic bags Supermarket store Countdown has announced that single-use plastic bags will be removed from its stores and online shopping by the end of next year.

About 350 million plastic bags are set to be removed every year, as supermarkets SuperValue and FreshChoice also commit to becoming single-use plastic-bag free.

“Now is the right time to take the lead, phase-out single-use plastic carrier bags and introduce better options for customers,” Countdown’s managing director Dave Chambers says.

“We have been tracking customer sentiment for two years and our most recent research, concluded in August, indicates that 83 per cent of our customers support phasing out single-use plastic carrier bags.”

Countdown introduced New Zealand’s first plastic bag-free supermarket on Waiheke Island in May last year. Customers bring their own bags or buy compostable bags for 15 cents.

Chambers said customers adapted quickly.

“We’re confident Kiwis will get in behind this change across the

country, and we’re committed to making the move from check-out bags as simple for customers as we can.”

Charging customers for plastic bags was considered, but rejected, Chambers said.

“Charging is also not the ideal outcome for the environment, because these bags are still provided,” Chambers said.

Over the coming months, more affordable and sustainable initiatives will be introduced, including permanently reducing their reusable bags from $1.39 to $1 from October 9.

The plastic bag target will become a key part of Countdown’s efforts on waste minimisation, which already includes Countdown’s target to producing zero

food waste. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said charging for or banning plastic bags could not be introduced through a council bylaw and he would continue to work with MPs to promote a change through a local bill in Parliament.

“I met with Countdown early in my mayoralty to seek their support for reducing plastic bags in Auckland. It is great to see them

responding positively to our discussion and to customer sentiment.

“Reducing plastic bag use is a crucial part of decreasing waste and protecting our environment.

I encourage others to follow suit.

“If other businesses make efforts to reduce plastic bag use and the Government introduces a levy on plastic bags, we can likely cut around 500 to 600 million plastic bags a year out of our waste stream in Auckland alone.”

Greenpeace is also offering high praise to Countdown for the plan to eliminate single-use plastic bags from its supermarkets.

“Massive props to Countdown today. They’ve taken a bold move that makes them leader of the pack on plastic reduction,” says Greenpeace spokeswoman Elena Di Palma.

“They’ve realised how strongly the New Zealand public sees these bags as pure environmental craziness.”

Rival supermarket New World are polling customers asking whether they want to pay a charge for single-use bags, something Greenpeace has criticised as a weak measure.

The New Zealand Superannuation Fund has made its first offshore farm investment, taking a stake in Australian beef stud Palgrove for an undisclosed amount.

The deal, which has received approval from the Australian Foreign Investment Review Board, will increase the fund’s rural land portfolio to 33 farms worth approximately $340 million, it said in a press release. In its 2016 annual report, the Fund said it owned 21 farms valued at $204 million. As at

Chief investment officer Matt Whineray said Palgrove is a high quality, highly successful business that complemented the Fund’s existing investment portfolio. “We are pleased to make the fund’s first offshore investment under our rural land strategy. We continue to see rural land as an attractive long-term investment and a good diversifier for our portfolio,” he said.

Palgrove is based near Stan-

thorpe, Queensland, but has livestock and properties now spread across Queensland and New South Wales, according to its website. The stud currently runs about 5000 head of registered cattle.

The Super Fund was set up in 2001 to help meet the country’s future pension needs. Its acquisition of rural land is driven by a desire to diversify its investments and to benefit from increased demand for meat and proteins as Asian countries become wealthier and favour a more western diet.

When should you worry about a crack?

Wall cracks are common in Australian and New Zealand houses and though some are nothing to worry about, others can indicate a sinking or damaged foundation.

Turning a blind eye to wall cracks may also result in the homeowner missing the warning signs for serious and ongoing structural damage.

& Employment (MBIE) has a range of resources describing the process of postemergency building assessment.

However, it is important to be aware that location-specific factors such as soil type, soil displacement, rainfall events and individual building design can also affect a building’s structural strength and lead to cracks.

If the root cause of wall cracks is not identified and addressed, the damaged foundations can quickly devalue a property.

Often it will be necessary to hire a professional to make an assessment on the type and severity of damage. Regardless of the cause, the solution for severe cracks will often be the same.

When do wall cracks indicate a structural problem?

Generally, smaller hairline cracks are not cause for concern. These are usually the result of seasonal expansion and contraction of clay soils beneath the house resulting in minor foundation movement.

These types of cracks can be easily patched and re-painted.

However, larger cracks that display the following characteristics may indicate a weakness in the property’s foundation: •

One side of the wall is higher than the other

•

Doors and windows no longer close in their frame

•

Cracks are wider than about 5mm (half a centimetre)

How to fix large cracks in the wall

Problematic wall cracks will typically start at windows, doorways or house corners.

What causes large wall cracks?

Large cracks may appear because the property’s foundation has shrunk or lost its strength, causing all or part of the house to sink.

This usually happens because the moisture in the soil beneath the settled section of the home is either too wet or too dry.

In a seismically active region like New Zealand, earthquakes are an obvious cause of structural damage. As homeowners it is important to take the necessary precautions following any seismic activity.

The best long-term solution for fixing large cracks is to lift, re-level and resupport the home. This process is called ‘underpinning’. As the house is elevated to a level position, the cracks may close or become smaller (plaster or render walls can then be patched and repainted).

Windows and doors will also usually begin to work properly again.

Scandinavian style The trend has been popular for some time now and although fading a little, it’s still extremely popular.

Encompassing natural wood, soft materials and clean shapes it has been best associated with calm, restful surroundings and can be done on a budget.

However, negative space can be really important as it allows the eye to rest so that a room reads as interesting and not chaotic.

In Scandinavian countries, the tree is sacred. As forests stretch as far as the eye, these people constantly take care of natural forests and have a special relationship with nature. Utilising pines, birch, firs, oaks and beech, the natural wood is clean and light.

Still struggling? Just remember these top five tips and you will be on trend:

To make a peaceful atmosphere in the living room use of timber is favoured with smooth and rounded shapes.

Wall-to-wall carpets never took off in Sweden and all truly Scandinavian interiors will have a wooden, preferably light coloured, floor in all rooms apart from the bathroom.

Other significant features are soft materials and clean shapes. Timber combines well with soft materials and these can be set in all rooms as soft cushions, wool sofas, rugs or furs at the foot of the bed.

The shape of Scandinavian furniture is about clean forms with rounded ends.

This combination of elements is reflected in a unique way. Colour also plays a major role. White colour symbolises immaculate expanses of snow. In combination with other elements the home gets a bright and relaxed atmosphere for which this style is popular.

Playing with textures in Scandinavian decorating can be just as interesting as playing with colour. Muted colours, rich textures from lamps, the pouf, the rug, the textiles on the couch and on the bed, keep things interesting.

Keeping the colour palette muted can help your room feel spacious even if there is a lot going on in terms of decorations.

Floors:

Colour: White walls and cool grey and blue textiles definitely gives off the right ambience of a Scandinavian interior however there are more colourful textiles from the likes of Marimekko in the 60s pop vein and the much more decorative Josef Frank from the 40s. Both very different, both very Scandinavian.

Materials: Wood, and don’t be afraid to show it.

Incorporate cladding on walls and even ceilings to add texture and warmth. Use a grey oil to take the yellow away from woods like pine or oak.

Form: Clean lines from architecture to furniture.

Function: A truly Scandinavian interior is very liveable.

Guardian employee Laura Bagrie adores animals, so much so that when she went on a trip to Auckland last week she made a special trip to BaristaCats Cafe, combining her love of food with her love of animals. Surrounded by friendly felines, she especially liked Miss Molly Snugglington, who has slightly crossed eyes. ■ Beef: Combine all the spice mix ingredients together in a small bowl. Rub over the beef roast and place on a wire tray on a baking dish. Reduce the oven temperature to 200°C and place in the oven to roast for 40-45 minutes for medium-rare beef.

■ Remove beef from the oven and place on a warmed plate, cover loosely with foil and a clean tea towel and leave to rest.

■ Crispy roast potatoes: Place

potatoes in a saucepan of salted water and bring to the boil.

Reduce the heat and allow to simmer for 5-8 minutes, just so they are slightly soft around the edges. Drain and place saucepan back over the heat. Shake saucepan to dry off potatoes.

Score the surface of each with a fork to scruff them up.

■ Place oil and butter into a roasting dish and place in oven to heat. Add potatoes, tossing well so that every surface is covered.

Roast for 45 minutes at least until thoroughly golden and crisp.

Sprinkle with a little salt before serving.

■ To serve: Serve slices of beef with the potatoes, peas, gravy and Yorkshire puddings if you wish.

Borough’s braided flock Borough School students got crafty for conservation last week. As the endangered black-billed gulls return to Ashburton River, Junior Greenies at Borough School met with a special visitor from Forest and Bird to learn about the species and create their own “braided flock”. Edith Smith helped the students decorate their own black-billed gulls, to promote the birds’ arrival and ensure they are welcomed and looked out for by their fellow Mid Canterbury humans.

Fire and ‘ice’ at Methven Methven students got a glimpse into life as a Methven firefighter when they took a trip to the local station. Using smoke machines and a tunnel, students enacted to the local volunteer firefighters how they would escape flames.

Club news 24 Ashburton Guardian Allenton Bowling Club Last Thursday the garden of Janet and Ian Kingsbury was invaded by a happy group of Allenton bowlers along with family, friends and other bowlers from around the district as we fundraised for the replacement of our all-weather green.

Our prayers were answered with no rain and only a gentle breeze. The garden was a picture where models showed off some lovely garments from Toni with more on display for sale, these proving very popular.

The baking, plant and jewellery stalls were well supported and the make-up and flower arranging demonstrations were very much appreciated. Devonshire teas were served and a very busy day concluded.

A very grateful thanks from the club to Janet and Ian for sharing their beautiful garden with all who attended and to those who assisted in any way to make the day such a success.

Ashburton County Lions Members arriving at the September tea meeting of the Ashburton County Lions were greeted with small sample packs thanks to Farmers Ashburton who also provided prizes for our monthly raffle.

The speaker for the night was Ron Trounson a local audiologist. Ron provided members with booklets about the ear and hearing loss. He outlined some of the different problems that can arise and how these can impact on wider health of sufferers. He also spoke about the different kinds of hearing aids available and financial help available to those needing it.

The other guest for the evening was the District Governor Lorna Inch from Tekapo. She congratulated the club for reaching its 30th birthday. She spoke of the focus areas for Lions projects around the world and the importance of clubs supporting the Lions Club International Fund and the great work it is doing especially in the many area of the world that are currently suffering from recent weather events and earthquakes.

In recognition of World Service Day members contributed toiletry items to be given to the Presbyterian Support Services.

The major focus for the club this month is the running of the Stars in your Eyes to be held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Saturday October 14. We hope that everyone out there buys a ticket and comes along to support us as we raise funds to help the young people of Ashburton.

Ashburton Horticultural Society President Trevor Gamblin welcomed 15 members to our September meeting.

John Keast from The Courier Newspaper was our guest speaker for the evening.

John gave a very informative talk on the preparing and printing of a Community weekly newspaper. The printing business has changed dramatically from most printing companies having a large staff with the process going through many stages before final print, now with modern technology it is all computerised and with the push of a button the paper is off to the printers.

Ashburton Ladies Friendship Club The monthly meeting was held on Wednesday September 27 in the Doris Linton Lounge where President Bev Gregory welcomed the members.

Margaret Taylor reported on a combined Friendship Club bus trip to Rolleston and Christchurch. New roading, housing and traffic lights were toured and the central city by tram accessed “the Crossing” retail development.

Mini-speakers Sheila Hare and Rona Hayward described the work of the Blind Foundation Ashburton support group, 90 members are registered. Most are partially sighted, but some folk are completely blind.

A monthly luncheon is held, catered for by committee and social outings are arranged. A technology officer checks any problems with “Talking Books” equipment.

The main speaker was Nancy Winter.

In 1934 Nancy was 6 years old, her sister 8 years old, and living in Dunedin.

Nancy`s mother became pregnant, but the doctor said something was wrong and sent her to hospital. X-rays revealed quadruplets. Nancy’s grandmother who was Polish asked ‘what’s the matter?’ “ I’m having quadruplets” replied Mother.

‘What disease is that?’ asked a puzzled grandmother.

The Johnson quadruplets were three girls and one boy. A photograph was shown of the four bonneted babies, tucked into a crib with hot-water bottles to keep them warm (no incubators in those days).

Little Nancy thought mother went to hospital to choose a baby to take home. “why did Mum choose so many,” she wondered.

The total weight of the quadruplets was 17lb7oz, which is considered a good weight for multiple births. They were then transferred to Karitane Hospital for 10 months. The babies cried for days before adjusting to their family home.

Dad and Mum were offered a five bedroom house for one pound deposit and a peppercorn rental. The Dunedin Town Hall Community Sing raised one hundred pounds in donations. Twelve dozen cloth nappies washed using a washing board as there was no washing machine.

Photographers were keen to set up interesting scenes, eg at the beach. A man arrived in a car collected them, bought buckets and spades en route and took his photographs. Mother kept her hat and overcoat on.

Music was a family talent and Nancy herself supports Ashburton shows. Her motto is “Everyone needs to have a laugh.”

Ashburton Photographic Society September has been a busy month for the Photographic Society; we have started the month looking at slides taken by past members. This was very much a walk down memory lane and enjoyed by all that attended.

Our field trip was to Plains Railway and those who attended had a fabulous time.

The results of our photographic workshop with Scott Fowler were very much on display in our portrait competition.

There were several images of the delightful Shyana for our judge Cushla Moorhead look at. During the course of the workshop all members had a chance to pose, this was quite an experience, as for most of us we enjoy being behind the camera not in front of it. As a consequence there were a number of images of Clarrie Brake, he made a very good subject and some of the comments resulted in quite a bit of laughter on as they were read out.

Noel Graham then demonstrated turning an off centre pendant as a necklace, this idea can also be used as earrings, though on a smaller scale. He began by creating a screw chuck followed by a square section of wood with a central hole and another hole 6mm off centre.

Following a strict procedure in order Noel produced a beautiful pendant, all that was required was a section of cord.

Coronation/Phoenix Target Shooting Clubs No trouble deciding what to write about this week. The New Zealand Secondary Schools Championship was contested in Palmerston North at the weekend and the Ashburton College team, made up entirely of shooters from Coronation, emerged winners. The team score of 875.33 was made up by Shania HarrisonLee 289.11, Lanelle McArthur 292.11 and Emma Smith 294.11. Second place went to Wellington College 866.26 and third was Fielding High School with 865.37.

As a result of their excellent scores in the Inter-School match all three girls were selected into the South Island team. As a result of her fine showing in the morning match Emma Smith was named as Captain of the South Island team. The South Island team defeated the North Island 1930.77 to 1924.75 with Emma contributing 195.07, Lanelle 195.12 and Shania 197.09 (including the only possible 100.6) It was no surprise to hear that the three Ashburton girls were then selected in the New Zealand Secondary Schools team to compete in a postal match with a group of United Kingdom secondary schools. Lanelle came to the party with a score of 197, Shania 188 and Emma 186.

The girls returned home on Sunday night fully loaded with trophies and certificates accompanied by Steve McArthur who had travelled with the team as Manager/Coach. Our club members are very proud of the huge effort made by the team and offer very sincere congratulations.

Diabetes NZ Ashburton Branch After struggling for several years to attract a bigger active membership of our branch, we held a Special General Meeting on September 26 where a resolution was passed that Diabetes NZ Ashburton be dissolved. This was attended by 15 members who all voted in favour of this resolution.

The branch has had various titles over the last 55 years but we were always there for our members, and enjoyed hosting open meetings 3-4 times a year with speakers on a great range of topics. The committee recently had a farewell dinner and were very pleased to have Mrs Val Hogg attend. She and her husband Alf were Foundation and Life Members. Other existing active Life Members are Mary Simpson, Denise Wells and Joan Healey. The late Carol Hill, our President for 25 years up to her untimely death two years ago, was a Life Member of both our branch and the national body. A tree was planted and a plaque laid in the Domain in her memory. Thanks must go to our Patron, Dr Murray Wackrow, and Nurse Educator Chris Harrison who were both very supportive of us.

Member Margaret Drummond told us of a visit she had to China. What an amazing country of contracts. Highlights were The Great Wall, Yangtze River, Silk factory, Jade and Pearl factories, Tea farm, Terracotta Warriors, Pandas, Bullet train rides, beautiful gardens and busy streets with dancing at night and exercises during the day. Margaret was thanked for sharing her travels with us.

Hope played a piano selection, lovely to listen to. Joy and Margaret cut the Birthday cake. Raffles were won by Colleen Wederell and Una Green. Hostesses Margaret and Wendy served afternoon tea to end a fascinating afternoon.

As human beings our prime requirements are food, air, water and shelter and so it is with all the millions of microorganisms in the soil.

It is important to use fertilisers that do not damage these microorganisms, such as compost although these do still need to be processed in the ground, superphosphate has produced excellent results, but excessive use does damage the microorganisms. An important quote was “Don’t fight nature - you will lose every time.”

Various samples of soil were displayed - soil is 50 per cent organic, 45 per cent air and water and 5 per cent organic, of this 5 per cent, only .005 per cent contains the power house of worms, compost, fibre, etc.

The magnetic composition of soil was discussed, showing how some substances have a negative charge, such as compost, and others such as calcium, potassium, nitrogen as ammonium have a positive charge. Mineral rich plants withstand insect attacks better than others.

Girls focused on Collier goals

The Mid Canterbury Hockey Collier Trophy team will be taking on the best young hockey talent for their age-group from around New Zealand next week.

The under 13 side travels to Tauranga early on Sunday morning, ready for their first game at 1pm on Monday.

The side has plenty of warm-up games under its belt and coach Skip Muir is pleased with how the team has come along.

“They have gotten better and better and better as we have gone along,” he said.

“From where they started to how they are playing now is good, it is just now up to them how they will put it together.”

The side has been drawn in pool C, alongside Tauranga, North Harbour, Wairarapa, Nelson and Counties Manukau.

“It is going to be hard, it was hard last year and it is probably going to be even harder this year,” Muir said.

“We will take it game by game but if we can get one win and a couple of draws we will be happy and if we can get a couple of wins we would be very, very happy.

“We are targeting Nelson as we have heard they might not be as strong as previous years but it all comes down to what happens on the day.”

Adams eases fears

Options galore for Ferns’ coach Once a straight-forward process, the task of predicting the Silver Ferns starting line-up has become more complicated this season.

Much anticipation surrounds the make-up of Janine Southby’s starting seven for tonight’s Constellation Cup opener in Auckland, with the Ferns’ efforts to develop genuine competition for positions over the past two series now causing some serious selection headaches.

It is a somewhat unfamiliar dilemma for a Silver Ferns coach, with a lack of depth in the national squad tending to produce a fairly obvious starting seven.

Having approached this season with the key objective of developing a range of options in each position, Southby said she is pleased to have the luxury of choice - even if it does make her job tough as a selector.

“Certainly [assitant coach Yvette McCausland-Durie] and I have some robust discussions about our starting lines. We have a really good look at what’s happening in training and also what we’ve seen from them in previous games,” she said.

“Also at the back of our mind is that we’re looking at still building to Commonwealth Games and knowing we still have some work to do in some positions to ensure we have strong cover.”

Katrina Grant has locked down the goal defence bib this season.

It may be tempting for Southby to reward the same starting line-up that upset the Diamonds 57-47 in last month’s Quad Series finale. But missing from that match were two of the Ferns’ more established stars in vicecaptain Maria Tutaia, and athletic midcourter Kayla Cullen.

The goal defence and centre spots are the only ones that pick themselves, with Katrina Grant and Shannon Francois having those respective bibs on lockdown so far this season.

While Southby has indicated she hopes to look at some more options in these positions over the course of the four-test Con-

stellation Cup series, she is unlikely to do so in game one.

The attacking combinations appear to be trickiest to predict, with a range of different permutations available. The recent experimentation with Bailey Mes at goal attack and Tutaia at goal shoot produced the desired results, with Mes’ speed and agility proving a handy weapon further up the court.

Although she has made no secret of her preference for goal attack, Tutaia said she is not fazed by the prospect of being moved around over the series.

“It’s just up to Janine and Yvette on where they see me best fitting in. Goal shoot is a very interesting position for me, and it’s good to change things up and refresh my brain with a new position.”

Having had few opportunities against Australia over the past couple of seasons, Tutaia said she is just happy to be involved with this series in any capacity. Tutaia sat out most of last year’s international season with a foot injury, only returning for the final two tests of the 2016 Constellation Cup, albeit on restricted minutes.

Following tonight’s opener the Constellation Cup series will move to Christchurch, before wrapping up in Australia with tests in Adelaide and Sydney.

by James Harden in a pre-season game against the Houston Rockets and left the court holding his lower back. Adams has battled lower back issues many times in the past few seasons, and ESPN commentator Royce Young earlier speculated that he could miss some time in the pre-season. Interdoms back for 2019?

Perhaps the most iconic race on the Australasian harness racing calendar, the Inter Dominion Pacing Grand Final, is likely returning to New Zealand.

Tenders closed over the weekend for the next three-year block of hosting rights and Harness Racing New Zealand, together Harness Racing Victoria and Harness Racing New South Wales, have lodged a joint bid.

Under the proposal, the Auckland Trotting Club would host the series at Alexandra Park in 2019 after it is held in Melbourne next year.

The series was last held in New Zealand in 2011, at Alexandra Park, under the auspices of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club.

This was owing to the fact Addington suffered significant damage in the catastrophic earthquake in February of that year,

just weeks earlier.

After the Perth series in early 2012, the old system of rotating it between eight states and islands across both countries was abandoned and a new tender process was implemented.

New South Wales hosted it for the first three years at Menangle and this year’s series, in November and December will be the last of three held at Gloucester Park in Perth.

Perth officials are not expected to re-tender for the series and, with Queensland and South Australia under immense final strain, it seems likely that the Auckland/ Melbourne/Sydney bid will be the only, and therefore successful, one.

Harness Racing New Zealand Chief Executive Edward Rennell says it was important to get a race the stature of the Inter Dominion Final back in New Zealand.

“It’s a well-established brand and as well as that it would be sad to lose touch with a race that is so iconic and has been an important part of our industry for so long.”

Rennell says the likely template will see the series continue to be run after the New Zealand Cup and before Christmas, and for a stake that is expected to be $500,000, under half of this year’s stake.

“It has to be done in a way that doesn’t compromise our existing racing schedule or funding.

“We’ve done the sums based on a $500,000 final and at that amount we are looking to contribute about $200,000 in terms of overall industry funding.

“It’s a significant amount, but not too significant when assessed in the big picture.”

Rennell says the requirement to commit to three years had

prevented Harness Racing New Zealand or the two flagship clubs bidding on it in the past six years.

“We didn’t see it as a viable option when you had to tender on that basis.

“But now, as part of a joint bid, we can see a lot of merit in the idea.”

The Inter Dominion Trotting Series was put on the scrap heap after the 2012 series and was replaced in each country by the Anzac Cup at Alexandra Park and the Great Southern Star at Melton.

But Rennell says that there will definitely be a feature trotting race programmed to compliment the pacers’ final.

“This is, of course, all subject to the bid being approved by the Inter Dominion Committee.

“But, I’d very surprised if there were any other tenders.”

Foster not expecting another thrashing Assistant head coach Ian Foster doesn’t think the All Blacks’ 57-0 thrashing over the Springboks will have any bearing on Sunday’s test in Cape Town.

While the Mid Canterbury Hammers continue a strong finish to the Heartland Championship, the younger generation will be hoping to do the Hammers name proud at their respective tournaments this weekend.

Both the Mid Canterbury under 16 and under 18 sides will travel to their respective three day tournaments.

The under 18 side will play in the South Island under 18 tournament, facing off against Canterbury Country Development, North Otago and Cavaliers.

Mid Canterbury Rugby development officer Jason Ree said they had played a couple of the teams before, but that there would be more bite this time around with a trophy on the line.

The under 16 side kicks off their tournament today against Southland, after an impressive unbeaten run in the pre-tournament games saw them placed in the top bracket of play.

If you look through the last three or four test matches over here, there have been some amazing games and we’ve had to put everything on the line to get the result we wanted.”

Foster said preparation is different this week following the

trip from Buenos Ares with the side taking on a lighter training schedule but admitted it’s something each team in the Rugby Championship has to go through during the competition.

“This week’s not so much about training hard, we got here, a big travel day on Monday, and every team in this Championship has a week like this and this is ours. So we’ve just got to make sure we’re really smart, get energy levels high, we’ve got to get the brain adjusted and clear.”

Hampton Downs Motorsport Park have announced plans to build a hotel on their premesis, with construction expected to reach completion in the first quarter of 2019.

Confirming the plans at this week’s launch of Toyota Racing New Zealand’s new headquarters, Hampton Downs Chief of Operations Josie Spillane said that the hotel would be a four-star establishment with more than 70 rooms.

“A hotel was actually a part of the original [Hampton Downs] concept, which a lot of the apartment owners bought into in terms of the promises that had been made,” said Spillane.

“The commercial reality of that for the previous owners was something that they could never actually quite realise.

“We’re working with one of the main hotel developers in New Zealand to realise the vision of having a four-star, 70-room hotel here on sight. It’s fair to say that we’re in our final stages. There are a few boxes to be ticked, ‘i’s to be dotted, and ‘t’s to be crossed, but certainly the negotiations are going incredibly well.”

Spillane says that the move is part of the facility’s drive to cement itself as a tourist destination, alongside being a marquee Australasian motorsport venue. Its crea-

Sport Cooper leads Baabaas Flyhalf Quade Cooper will captain a Barbarians selection against the Wallabies at Sydney later this month before the Australia squad’s end of year tour to Japan and Europe.

Barbarians coach Alan Jones tweeted the news of Cooper’s appointment yesterday. The 29-yearold former Wallabies playmaker has been playing for Brisbane City in Australia’s national championship after being cut from Australia’s Rugby Championship squad. The 70-test veteran played his last international against Italy in June.

Mid Canterbury tennis hotshot James Watt has his eyes set on making it big in the tennis world and picking up the Otago Open title has helped him start this season off in the best way possible.

Watt entered the tournament last weekend as the top seed, but was not letting that put any expectation on his shoulders.

“I went in with the mindset that it was just the start of the tennis season so I was going in to get some match experience really,” he said.

“I was just really looking at building to the ITF events later in the year.”

Watt said it was his probably his biggest win yet, given it was an open tournament.

The 17-year-old started playing tennis at the age of seven at the Mid Canterbury Tennis Centre, under the tutelage of Chris Anderson, but it was at Timaru Boys’ High School where he realised he could really make something out of tennis.

“My coach Kane Newlands, he has worked in with New Zealand and stuff like that, and he said I have the potential to go overseas and play tennis,” Watt said.

“I am looking at going to an American college to play tennis when I finish high school.

“A lot of the higher up Kiwi guys have used tennis to go over there for education but I am really looking to go there for the high level tennis.”

Measuring a dizzying 6ft 9in, Watt has size on his side on the court, which can be a benefit.

“The advantages are on the serve as you are able to get more power and quicker games, it is something a lot of people aren’t really used to,” he said.

Having given rugby a go when he was younger, as well as playing basketball this year, tennis has always been Watt’s main focus.

“I train five times a week. That is on the court, and in my own time I do fitness and go to the gym,” he said.

With a wealth of big tennis names to choose from, Watt said he is attempting to build his game around Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro.

Starting off the season with a win was important, Watt said. Bue he has a lot of overseas trips coming up and picking up good results there is his main goal for this season.
