More than one person every day is referred to family violence services in Ashburton.

Stopping Violence Services has been operating in Ashburton since August and clinical director Pete Darrell said he is currently seeing seven to eight mandated (referred) clients per week.

However with no funding available for non-mandated clients the service cannot work with clients who cannot afford the fee, Mr Darrell said.

“So far two people have made a good decision that they need support to stop their violence and have paid for the services,” he said yesterday.

Work and Income New Zealand (Winz) also runs a Family Violence Intervention Programme, which averages around 50 clients a year in Ashburton, said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Social Development.

The aim of the programme was to recognise and identify where support was needed and if necessary, refer clients to specialist services.

Forty-nine people were tagged as being a part of the programme in Ashburton as at the end of June this year, which is consistent with previous years.

As at June 2014 and 2013 there were 53 clients and in 2012 there were 46.

Nationally, the number of clients has risen over the past five years from 9240

in 2011 to 13,666 as of June 2015.

However not all clients have their Family Violence Intervention Programme tag removed once they no longer require the service, which is a factor in the national increase.

To help cope with the demand on services a family violence counsellor has been appointed at Ashburton Hospital.

The need for the role was identified

by Ashburton Hospital staff and as a result Advance Ashburton has granted money to ensure the need could be met.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall touched down on New Zealand soil yesterday, with their seven-day tour starting in the capital. The focus of their visit would be largely on communities and culture. Prince Charles and Camilla’s royal visit coincides with the return of New Zealand’s rugby royalty – and the Prime Minister says the Prince and Duchess could possibly meet the All Blacks to “join in on the celebrations”. Mr Key said the visit was important as Prince Charles would one day become the King of New Zealand. “It’s really important he has that relationship with New Zealand and establish a rapport.”

He said the Queen had asked about the highly debated flag change when Mr Key was in England for the World Cup. “She asked about the process and I showed a couple of them. She’s actively engaged,” he said.

Top Gear editor dishes dirt Jeremy Clarkson’s fracas with a producer showed “a lack of respect” for the team behind the show, a Top Gear editor has said.

Richard Porter, a script editor on the programme for 13 years, has written about the punch that ended Clarkson’s time on the BBC hit show. Clarkson was suspended by the broadcaster after punching producer Oisin Tymon during a row over a steak dinner, before the corporation announced his contract would not be renewed. In the book called And On That Bombshell: Inside The Madness And Genius Of Top Gear, Mr Porter wrote: “Jeremy had let us down.” He went on: “We’d happily work long and late, trying to find a unicorn, a Talbot Samba and a cat that looked like Kylie Minogue if that’s what Jeremy wanted. But when the reward for the team’s hard work was a smack in the chops, that suggested a lack of respect for the people who worked so tirelessly to make his vision a reality.”

Council wages bill $10.7m

Over the past five years, the Ashburton District Council’s staff numbers have continued to grow and its wage bill has increased accordingly, from $7.862 million in 2011 to $10.704 million last year.

There are 235 people on the council’s pay roll, up from 154 last year, but most of that growth has come with the opening of the

EA Networks Centre.

There are now two council staff members earning between $220,000 and $280,000 per year.

Last year there were none.

The majority of staff, 163, earn less than $60,000 a year.

Thirty-six earn between $60,000 and $80,000, 15 between $80,000 and $100,000, 13 between $100,000 and $120,000 and six between $120,000 and $200,000.

In addition, the council employs a chief executive officer, Andrew Dalziel. His employment package is determined under the Local Government act and this sees him receive a salary of $268,000 as well as a company vehicle with a market value of $12,000.

Of the council’s 235 employees, 149 were in full time employment (up from 115 in the last financial year).

Pay for the district’s 12 district councillors and mayor Angus McKay is set by the Remuneration Authority.

Mr McKay earns $95,000 per year, while pay for elected councillors ranges from $29,000 for deputy mayor Darryl Nelson, $28,000 to committee chairs Alan Totty, Stuart Wilson and Neil Brown down to $23,000 to councillors with no additional responsibility.

Unemployed on the rise Unemployment in the Ashburton District has hit its highest level for several years, with 357 people registered as unemployed.

Job seeker numbers traditionally peak in the September quarter, but this year numbers were up 14 per cent on September 2014 and 6.5 per cent up on September 2013. Numbers were also up 2.8 per cent on June.

The figure is the highest for the September quarter since jobless numbers hit 633 in 1995.

Ashburton’s climbing unemployment was mirrored across New Zealand, with the national unemployment rate increasing by 6 per cent.

Across all categories, there were 1056 working age people in the district receiving benefits, but the number of sole parents and people on supported living benefits were lower than September 2014.

September job seeker numbers peaked in 1995 at 633 and by 2000 had dropped to 435.

Ashburton was almost at full employment in 2005 when there were just 70 people registered as looking for work, but numbers rose to 322 in September 2010, then fell to 174 in 2010.

Potting groups at loggerheads

Ashburton’s newest pottery club has a booming membership but it’s running out of workspace; it needs a new home.

Across town there’s the longestablished Ashburton Pottery Society with a small cluster of long-serving members, working from the town’s potting headquarters, Kirk House.

The new group, Hakatere Ceramics, is keen to strike a partnership deal with the Kirk House potters, possibly sharing membership and certainly sharing facilities, but the society’s members don’t want a bar of it.

Club president Sylvia Taylor said the matter had been discussed with the new group and they’d been told the answer was

no. The group did not want to discuss the matter further, Mrs Taylor said.

And that reaction has disappointed the Hakatere group.

They’re working in a garage but they’re out of space and believed a share deal with the pottery society would have made sense for both parties, said potter Vicki Blair.

“They’ve got a great set-up and it would be ideal if we could share this with them, but they don’t seem to want us. We’ve tried to mediate our way through it but they’ve said no, they won’t consider it,” she said.

Mrs Blair said the Kirk House group had only a small number of active potters, but had built up an excellent collection of equipment over the years that was now

largely unused. “We believe, if they have the facility it could be opened up for other people to use. It’s only used a very small part of the time.

“They use it on Wednesdays and we’d only want it at night and at the weekend and it would share costs.”

While member Mick Hydes believed two groups sharing one facility was a sensible outcome, if that deal couldn’t be struck, then Hakatere Ceramics members were prepared to set up an alternative potting headquarters if they could find a suitable place.

“We’ve been donated some equipment, five or six wheels and a couple of kilns, and if we get a base, then we’ll take classes. We’ve got 12 members and another 11 waiting to be part of our group

once we get a base,” he said.

Most of the Hakatere group are established potters and most were originally members of the Kirk House group but say the philosophies of the two groups didn’t mesh.

“We hit the dust because we were too enthusiastic and too fast-paced,” Anthea Reith said.

“We understand they want to run their club their way, but there’s nothing wrong with sharing. We don’t want to stop anyone doing what they do, we just want to do our thing at a different time of the day.”

Kirk House has been the Ashburton Pottery Society’s home since 1969. It was demolished in January 2013 because of earthquake damage and replaced with a new purpose-built structure.

From P1 Social worker Evans Chibanguza now spends the equivalent of two days a week in the role, dealing with referrals from within the hospital system.

Mr Chibanguza said he was unsure if demand for his role would increase due to the departure of Family Violence coordinator Sergeant Jim Sole, but was concerned there has been no replacement found.

Restorative Justice co-ordinator Toni Sowman was also concerned by the decision to not immediately fill Mr Sole’s position and believed vulnerable people would be left at risk.

Prior to his departure Mr Sole said there were on average between six and eight family violence incidents each week in the Mid-South Canterbury area.

Latest fall ‘no real surprise’

A second consecutive fall in dairy prices comes as no real surprise to Fonterra director candidate Ashley Waugh.

Prices dropped 7.4 per cent at Tuesday night’s auction, on the back of a 3.1 per cent decline in the previous GDP auction. The average price now sits at $US2569, below the $US3000 Fonterra needs to maintain its forecast $4.60 per kilogram of milksolids for the 2015-16 season.

With operating costs for most farmers around the $4kgMS mark, and a debt servicing load of $1-$1.20kgMS, according to DairyNZ, many will struggle to break even.

Farmer optimism had lifted

over recent months, but a slump of 10.5 per cent over the past fortnight has dampened spirits, Mr Waugh said.

Speaking in Ashburton yesterday, the Te Awamutu dairy farmer said the dip in prices at the last two GDP auctions was part and parcel of the volatility in the market and Fonterra needs to adjust its business model to deal with that reality.

“My view is that Fonterra needs to be able to run a business in volatile times and look after its shareholders through the ups and downs,” he said.

Mr Waugh admitted some of his views were not “politically appetizing”, but did confront the reality that longer term suppressed prices might well be on the cards.

He said assessing the co-operative’s performance on its annual report and EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) numbers failed to account for the plight of many of its shareholders in the current climate.

“The annual report numbers are great but that’s the stainless steel end of the business – from the factory to the market to the consumer.

“What it does not say is how much it has paid for the milk. If I look at the grass to consumer model, what returns are we getting?

“We’ve got to stop looking at the co-operative like a separate animal – it’s our company, we’ve got shares but we’ve also got land and animals.

“We’ve got everything we own

invested, and as farmers we deserve a return.”

Mr Waugh said Fonterra was good at communicating with its farmers, advising them to cut back on discretionary spending, supplementary feeding and shaving costs wherever possible, but it needs to heed its own advice and continue to improve efficiencies.

Mr Waugh and his wife Catherine purchased their dairy farm in 2012 after extensive management experience in the dairy industry across New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and the Pacific.

His CV also includes high profile positions with Ford Motors and National Foods, however he says he’s happy to be back in the cowshed.

Cadets bring home silver at the nationals

The Ashburton Cadet Unit proved their strength over the weekend by beating their opponents in tug of war at a national competition.

The group also came first in rifle safety and shooting and came second-equal overall in the National Area Skills Competition in Auckland.

Area support officer Major Cezarne Rodgers said the team of nine were over the moon about annihilating the other teams in tug of war.

“It was quite interesting to watch.

“They expected it to be a bit harder.”

Major Rodgers said she was very proud of them for doing so well in the competition and working so hard against the other two teams.

“They were absolutely exhausted by the last activity.”

The competition was also a good way for them to meet new people.

Ambulance calls Ashburton’s St John ambulance attended 11 medical-related incidents on Tuesday.

Sex offences An award-winning Kiwi entertainer has been accused of sex offences against four women. The man, in his 40s, appeared in Auckland District Court yesterday where he pleaded not guilty to four counts of indecent assault and two of sexual violation. The latter charges carry a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in jail. Court staff confirmed there was suppression on file but refused to disclose the details of the suppression order.

The defendant will be back in court in January.

- NZME A raucous crowd in Auckland welcomed home the victorious All Blacks under a spring sun yesterday. The team that successfully became the first in the world to win back-to-back Rugby World Cups spent half an hour signing autographs, taking photos with fans and shaking hands in Victoria Park yesterday. A crowd of approximately 25,000 people turned out at noon despite heavy rain throughout the morning. The clouds moved away from the city and just before the All Blacks arrived the sun came out for the entire event.

October sunshine was abundant in these parts, including Ashburton, which received its highest ever level of sunshine hours for the month, 271, since records began in 1930.

The town was still well behind Lake Tekapo, which received 291 hours, also breaking all previous records for the area, and Cromwell and Gisborne, which received 276 and 272 hours respectively.

Ashburton recorded a wind gust of 109 kilometres per hour on October 4, the fourth highest

speed recorded in the town during October since 1970.

The gust was representative of some of the windy conditions experienced at times throughout the month.

“The perfect recipe for extreme fire danger” was created on October 7, due to a combination of very strong winds, high temperatures and low humidity.

Fires throughout eastern parts of the South Island included several buildings destroyed by a vegetation fire between Dunsandel and Rakaia. Strong winds

struck eastern areas of the South Island again on October 21, and fire brigades were called to 15 wind-related incidents, mostly scrub fires.

AgResearch Winchmore received just 11 millimetres of rain during the month.

Meanwhile, NIWA’s seasonal climate outlook, for the three months through to January, suggests temperatures and soil moisture levels are likely to be below average, while rainfall is likely to be near normal or below normal.

Truck fire stunt The schoolgirl involved in a spectacular monster truck fire stunt being looked at by WorkSafe was a keen volunteer who has aspirations of becoming a stunt woman. Tori Giles, 13, was dressed in a fire-retardant suit and helmet before being put in a metal cage on the front of the monster truck that smashed through walls set alight at the Rangiora A&P Show over Labour Weekend. WorkSafe New Zealand has confirmed it is making follow-up inquiries into the incident. It has also been criticised on social media.

Mystery yacht found A mystery yacht found on the sea floor of the Picton Harbour could be the Sioux – an uninsured $150,000 vessel which went missing five years ago. Police said the wreck was about 10m long and had been found near the entrance to the harbour on Friday during a Defence Force training exercise.

Acting area commander Senior Sergeant Peter Payne said it fit with the disappearance of the Sioux, a 10m vessel which broke free from its mooring during stormy weather in June 2010.

Farm likely to sell for up to $22m

A large prime Pendarves arable farm is expected to fetch up to $50,000 per hectare when it’s sold later this month, despite the challenging farming conditions this season.

Belonging to South Canterbury family cropping mogul Turley Farms, Kyle Park, a 441 hectare property will be the largest of its type offered in recent years and has already attracted interest

from overseas buyers.

Property Brokers rural sales consultant Chris Murdoch said there had been “quite good interest” from overseas as well as local clients looking to purchase one of the three blocks within the farm.

Offers close on November 27. He expected it to fetch between $19.9 to $22 million.

“It’s a big block of land with the best arable soils right in the middle of Pendarves.”

Mr Murdoch believed it was

likely the spray irrigated farm would be retained as an arable farm once sold, or could be used for dairy grazing.

Mr Murdoch said there had not been many farm sales in the area over the past year but he believed that would change next year as some farmers look to exit before their March balance date.

The last sale near the Pendarves area was believed to have attracted around $55,000 per hectare – a new record for the district.

It was unclear why the farm has been put up for sale with Murray Turley unavailable for comment.

A director in Dairy Holdings Ltd (New Zealand’s largest dairy farming conglomerate), Mr Turley recently bought some of Canterbury large-scale agri-businessman Alan Pye’s divested shares, increasing his investment from 21 to 28 per cent.

At the time Mr Pye said he had become disillusioned with the management of the mega dairy-

farm owning company he started up in 2000 and was glad to be out of it. He held a 25 per cent shareholding, and was on the company’s board of directors.

Mr Pye was also critical of the company’s practice of expansion at the expense of production on the existing farms.

The Turley family were named in the National Business Review rich list this year with an estimated combined wealth of $135 million.

Hard work pays dividends for dux By ruBy Harfield

Years of hard work has paid off for Simon Reid who was named Ashburton College’s top student at the school’s Year 13 graduation ceremony last night.

The aspiring engineer received the 2015 dux award in front of a crowd of talented peers and proud parents at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

The Year 13 student, who received awards in a number of subjects including chemistry, graphics, mathematics and physics, puts his achievement all down to hard work.

Simon said it was a great honour to be named dux and is looking forward to the future where tertiary study is on the horizon.

This year had proved more challenging than other years but the effort he put in made it all worthwhile, he said.

Simon will be heading to Christchurch next year to study engineering at Canterbury University in the hope of branching into civil or chemical aspects of the field.

The recipient of the proxime accessit, or runner-up the dux, was Fergielyn Catayoc who credits her success to the extra effort she made in each subject this year.

She will be heading to Victoria University next year to pursue a career in law.

He reiterated the point that purpose and passion were the

main factors behind success.

It was also announced that three long-standing teachers would be retiring at the end of

the year – Chris Thompson (technology), Denis Saunders (Year 12 dean) and Steve Wood (head of technology).

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan’s message for the Year 13 students at their graduation ceremony last night was clear.

“You need to develop your own set of values that will form the foundation of the adult you are going to be.”

The students that stepped out into the adult world after last night would be given some time before they were expected to act like fully functioning adults, he said.

But when they did they needed to decide what type of adult they wanted to be and what beliefs they stood for.

The group of students, many of whom received a whole raft of awards and scholarships, were moulded by many parents, families and teachers along the way who needed to be thanked, Mr McMillan said.

TV programme show 3D may be on the chopping block It is “sad news” current affairs programme 3D may be on the chopping block, a media commentator says.

Mediaworks announced yesterday it may not renew the investigative show next year.

And it’s a move that might see current affairs fans switch off TV3, media commentator and former TVNZ head of news Bill Ralston said.

“That’s really sad news, but 3D is obviously a reasonably expen-

sive product to make. They’re in severe financial difficulty. It’s a shame to see any current affairs disappear, particularly a quality programme like that one.

“I think it just forces viewers who want current affairs product back to TV1 ... It looks like TV3 really is getting out of the current affairs market and leaving it to residual news programme with a 7 o’clock happy chat show.”

Mr Ralston said the series - that has undergone several incarna-

tions since it was first launched in 2013 - was not helped by a recent change in time slot.

Originally called Third Degree, the current affairs series underwent a revamp this year, as the network attempted to stem falling ratings.

It was cut to 30 minutes and moved to Sunday nights at 6.30pm, then later to Monday nights at 9.30pm.

“I think the changing of the management was the biggest

blow to it, then the changing of the slot. If you keep changing a programme’s time slot, you will very quickly lose its audience.

And that’s happened here I think,” Mr Ralston said.

In a statement, Mediaworks head of news Mark Jennings said: “Long-form current affairs is challenging to make commercially viable all over the world. Given the way media consumption habits are changing, unfortunately continuing 3D may not be possible.”

Consultation with affected staff is under way.

Hosted by Samantha Hayes, the programme is home to many of TV3’s most senior and respected journalists including Paula Penfold, Eugene Bingham, Sarah Hall, Melanie Reid and Phil Vine.

Reporter Paula Penfold tweeted it was a hard time for staff.

“It’s a shame when your kids find out your bad news before you’ve had a chance to tell them,” she wrote at 6pm.

Patient safety tops priority list

With monthly emergency presentations averaging around 450, and 160 other admissions at Ashburton Hospital, patient safety is the number one priority.

This week its importance is being highlighted through the National Patient Safety Week.

Ashburton and rural director of nursing Jan McClelland said staff at Ashburton Hospital intend to focus on communication and engagement with patients, to show them exactly how important their safety is.

Mrs McClelland said the Health Quality and Safety Commission had developed a number of resources for district health boards and other providers to use during the week and Ashburton wass on board.

All staff are wearing badges introducing themselves and their role, patient safety cards sit on each patient’s bedside

area and other safety resources are readily available throughout the hospital.

A new high-tech hospital patient information system is also being rolled out to not only improve patient safety but also ensure a better patient experience.

The South Island Patient Information Care System (PICS) is being phased in across Canterbury with Ashburton set to go live in the first quarter of 2017.

Canterbury District Health Board chief medical officer and PICS executive sponsor Nigel Millar said every patient at Ashburton Hospital would benefit.

Patient safety in regards to hygiene is also a top priority for hospital staff and this has been reflected in recent handwashing targets.

Survey results released earlier this year show that once again the hospital exceeded the national target for compliant hand washing, achieving a compliance rate of 84 per cent last quarter, up from 78.7 per cent from the previous quarter.

Ashburton College head girl and boy Kate Whiting and Lachie Davidson were among the multitude of Year 13 students that celebrated their last day at school yesterday with a few funny pranks.

Some of their antics included swapping uniforms, putting a for sale sign up outside the school and decorating their classroom walls with embarrassing photos of their teachers.

Taiwan, China summit The presidents of China and Taiwan will meet this weekend for the first time since civil war divided their lands 66 years ago, their governments said Wednesday, a highly symbolic move that reflects quickly improving relations between the formerly bitter Cold War foes.

The meeting on Saturday in Singapore between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Taiwanese counterpart, Ma Ying-jeou, could be China’s last chance to press its case for closer economic and political ties before Taiwan elections in January that may put the brakes on Ma’s pro-China initiatives.

Ma’s ruling Nationalists have been lagging in polls for the presidential and legislative elections. Saturday’s meeting could boost their credentials for driv-

ing progress in relations with China, but also carries the risk of appearing too close to Beijing, further damaging their chances with voters wary of the mainland’s government.

Presidents of the two sides have not met since Chiang Kaishek’s Nationalists lost the Chinese civil war to Mao Zedong’s Communists and the Nationalists rebased in Taiwan, 160 kilometres from the mainland, in 1949.

The two sides have been separately ruled since then, with Taiwan evolving into a freewheeling democracy.

Confirmation of the meeting from Chinese Cabinet’s Taiwan Affairs Office came hours after the Taiwanese side announced the meeting earlier yesterday.

First refugees to be relocated head to Luxembourg The first 30 refugees to be relocated from Greece boarded a plane in Athens yesterday bound for Luxembourg.

The six families from Syria and Iraq mark the start of a programme seeking to relocate refugees who have arrived in Greece from nearby Turkey to other European Union countries without them having to make the arduous and often dangerous overland journey across the Balkans on foot.

Thousands of tourists are stranded on three Indonesian islands after ash from the Mount Rinjani volcano forced the closure of airports and blanketed villages and farmlands.

Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island blasted ash and debris 3500 metres into the air on yesterday, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman.

Victims identified A Russian official says families have identified the bodies of 33 victims killed in Saturday’s plane crash over Egypt. The Russian jet crashed over the Sinai Peninsula early Saturday, killing all 224 people on board. Most of them were holidaymakers from Russia’s St. Petersburg. Igor Albin, deputy governor of St. Petersburg, said that families have identified 33 bodies. Russian officials have refrained from announcing the cause of the crash, citing the ongoing investigation.

NZ employment falls in third quarter By contrast, ANZ Bank New Zealand’s chief economist Cameron Bagrie told BusinessDesk the headline rise in unemployment, while negative, is not the only important figure.

“The whole household labour force survey has been incredibly volatile in the past few years,” Bagrie said. “Unemployment is a lagging indicator, and other indicators in the report were positive - hours worked, and filled jobs in the quarterly employment survey.

I place more value on leading indicators than on lagging ones.”

Bagrie expects a further cut to the official cash rate by the Reserve Bank “but I’m agnostic about whether that will be in December or later.”

Filled jobs, which includes fulltime, part-time and working proprietors, rose 0.7 per cent, seasonally adjusted, in the third quarter, having dropped 0.9 per cent three months earlier.

Hours worked increased 0.4 per cent, on the same basis, after falling 0.3 per cent in the second quarter.

The government statistician didn’t have a breakdown by industry of the drop in employment in the quarter.

The figures showed part-time jobs fell 4.1 per cent in the quarter, amounting to about 28,700 positions. Part-time positions tend to be seasonal and volatile. Total employment fell to 2.33 million from 2.35 million.

Employment rose by about 34,000 people in the year, which was attributed to demand in the construction industry, which added 20,500 jobs. Auckland contributed the biggest share of that, adding 14,700 jobs, while in Canterbury, there were 5000 more jobs. Yet in both regions, employment growth is slowing.

Auckland’s growth rate was 1.5 per cent, down from 3.9 per cent in the June year, while Canterbury’s growth of 1.3 per cent, while up from 1 per cent in the year to June 2015 is down from a peak of 7.6 per cent in the September 2014 year.

“It would be premature or negligent of me if I said anything more than that at this point in time,” he said.

Duke also refused to confirm or deny market speculation earlier this year that Briscoe was mulling a takeover bid for struggling children’s clothing retailer Pumpkin Patch, which never eventuated.

Briscoe’s cash reserves had reduced to $16.7 million by July 26 from almost $90 million at the end of January.

The drop mostly reflects the $68.7 million Briscoe spent on snapping up a 19.9 stake in Kathmandu before it launched the takeover offer.

Duke, who owns around 80

per cent of the company, said in September that depleted cash reserves wouldn’t stop the firm making another takeover attempt should the opportunity arise.

“We don’t stop assessing and looking and that won’t cease.”

The AFR also reported that The Warehouse Group was a potential bidder for Macpac.

However, a Warehouse representative said that speculation was “well off the mark”.

The Macpac spokeswoman said the company had not considered carrying out an initial public offering.

Macpac’s roots stretch back to 1973 when founder Bruce McIntyre began making backpacks in his parents’ Christchurch garage.

The company shifted production to Asia in 2003, at the cost of 150 Canterbury-based jobs.

Cameron’s association with Macpac began in 2011 when she invested $A20 million.

Outdoor retailer Macpac for sale Outdoor retailer Macpac has been put on the block and Briscoe Group boss Rod Duke, whose takeover bid for rival adventurewear seller Kathmandu failed in September, won’t be drawn on whether his firm has any interest in acquiring the business.

Privately-owned Macpac commenced a sale process after 58 per cent owner Jan Cameron, who cofounded Kathmandu in 1987, indicated she was looking to offload her shares in the Christchurchbased firm.

A spokeswoman said the company had performed “exceptionally well” over the past two years and there had been strong interest in the business from private equity investors on both sides of the Tasman.

Macpac operates 43 stores in Australia and New Zealand and employs more than 400 staff. Its products – which include tents, jackets, backpacks and sleeping bags – are sold in more than 30 countries.

The Australian Financial Review reported that Macpac was expected to fetch a sale price in the range of $A70 million to $A75 million ($74 million to $80 million), or roughly seven times its annual earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (ebitda) of around $A10 million.

The spokeswoman declined to comment on those figures, or when the sale could take place.

KPMG is advising Macpac through the process.

NZX-listed Briscoe, the operator of Rebel Sport and Briscoes

turned positive on the economic outlook and are more willing to hire workers, following a sharp deterioration of sentiment midyear, when dairy prices plunged and before the recent partial global price recovery. The ANZ Business Outlook showed those firms planning to hire staff rose to a net 12 per cent in October from 3 per cent a month earlier.

Yet there are job losses as well, in sectors facing tougher conditions, such as the dairy sector. In September, Fonterra Co-operative Group announced 227 job losses, adding to 523 laid off in July. And Westland Milk also flagged potential layoffs that month to cut costs in the face of the global slump in dairy prices.

Wage inflation was 0.4 per cent in the quarter for an unchanged annual rate of 1.6 percent, based on the labour cost index. Private sector wages rose 0.4 per cent in the quarter and 1.7 perc ent in the year, outpacing a 0.3 per cent quarterly increase for the public sector for an annual 1.2 per cent.

New Zealand employment unexpectedly fell for the first time in three years in the third quarter, stoking speculation among economists that a weak labour market gives the Reserve Bank another reason to cut interest rates as soon as next month.

Employment slipped 0.4 per cent in the three months ended September 30, for an annual gain of 1.5 per cent, Statistics New Zealand said. The participation rate dropped to 68.6 percent from 69.3 per cent. The kiwi dollar fell as low as 66.50 US cents from 67.05 cents immediately before the release and was recently at 66.55 cents.

The trade-weighted index dipped to 71.75 from 72.32.

Employment had been expected to grow 0.4 per cent in the latest quarter, according to a Reuters survey, while the participation rate was expected to hold at 69.3 per cent.

The government data did confirm expectations for an increase

in the unemployment rate to 6 percent from 5.9 per cent, which both the central bank and the market had expected.

The labour market data adds to the complex mix of factors Reserve Bank Governor Graeme Wheeler must weigh up when deciding whether to cut the official cash rate again, including the slump in the price of dairy products this year, Auckland’s overheated housing market and a kiwi dollar which has unexpectedly gained, reducing the amount of imported inflation. Most economists still expect a further rate cut by the Reserve Bank following today’s announcement, though they are divided on the timing.

“While some of the surprise could be attributed to the notorious volatility of NZ labour data, we must also take on board the labour market is softer than we were thinking,” said ASB’s chief economist Nick Tuffley. “The data reinforce our view that the RBNZ should cut the OCR again in December. And the risk is the OCR gets cut even lower over 2016.”

In praise of the quiet achievers Sue Newman

A

s the academic year winds down, it’s important to stop and take stock of what young people in the Ashburton District have achieved over the past year.

Last night signalled the start of the district’s end-of-year prizegiving ceremonies, a time when schools recognise the achievements of their best and brightest students – in the classroom, the sportsfield, in the arts and in life.

Awards are not handed out lightly and everyone recognises the effort that has been put in by a young person, sometimes against remarkable odds.

It’s easy to look at our two colleges and see them as little more than places where hordes of teenagers gather each day to socialise and, one hopes, to gain an education that will fit them for what is now a rapidly changing working world.

They enter those schools with one foot in childhood and the other in the stormy seas of adolescence. The next five years will shape their future and the people they’ll become. For some, those years will be relatively easy and orderly, for others they’ll be years of turmoil and challenge.

That so many come out the other end of their secondary education as well-rounded, high achieving young adults is a credit to the parents who raised them, the schools that have educated them and to the young people themselves for their determination to grasp what is offered, to learn from it.

Awards ceremonies cannot acknowledge the achievements of every student. It is right that the best and brightest have their moment of glory, that they are given accolades and are rewarded for years of hard graft.

But for every one of those achievers there is probably a dozen more who also deserve to be rewarded. They may not be top scholars or sportspeople, they may not be top at anything.

They’re the mainstream students who turn up to school every day, diligently work their way through assignments, do what’s required to the best of their ability. They’re the genuine nice guys who will become the society of tomorrow.

They don’t receive recognition, they don’t receive awards and scholarships, but those students should not be forgotten. In their own way they’re also winners, they’re life’s quiet achievers.

Fish fence Last week’s story about the Rangitata Diversion Race’s fish fence was disappointing journalism.

While the article contained a number of claims about the performance of our bioacoustic fish fence, at no point did the reporter attempt to run these theories past Rangitata

Diversion Race. Almost all of the article was given over to the viewpoint of Fish and Game, with comments taken from a meeting both parties attended (yet no quotes are attributed to us).

While we respect Fish and Game’s opinion, given the fish fence belongs to Rangitata Diversion Race, we would have thought it appropriate for the company to have an opportunity to respond.

The tone of the article was unbalanced; I note that there was no mention of the difficult operating environment that I spent some time explaining to the assembled group. I never indicated at the meeting that the fish fence is failing to deliver. We do have plans to improve its efficiency, but its current performance and reasons for any variability are still under investigation.

Including Rangitata Diversion Race in the headline and accompanying the story with my photo further cemented the impression Rangitata Diversion Race contributed to the article.

I expect a more professional approach from the Guardian and look forward to providing comment on any stories concerning the company in the future.

he gracious way in which the Wallabies took their heavy defeat by the All Blacks in the Rugby World Cup final suggests “mateship” between our two countries may, after all, still be intact.

In recent weeks that traditional bond has been quite severely under the cosh and the cause would appear yet to be resolved.

Our Aussie cuzzies seem suddenly to have realised the advantages of the harsh judicial system under which many of their ancestors first made it Down Under, namely deportation, for a fixed period of years or even, in very serious cases - such as stealing two sheep rather than one - for life.

Thus, so-called Kiwis, most of whom have resided in Australia for decades having moved there as toddlers with their parents, now find themselves doing time in a prison facility on a gale-ravaged island in the Indian Ocean facing indefinite separation from their own families back in the “Lucky Country” and, overall, a very uncertain future.

And these unfortunates are often the modern equivalents of the nineteenth century English sheep stealer or member of Fagin’s gang, “done,” for “lifting” a lady’s silk handkerchief, namely, more than a couple of parking fines or travelling on a train more than once without a ticket.

What’s more, when they have done their time for these heinous transgressions, they are not at once free to return to their loved ones back in their Aussie homes but are put in a primitive holding pen, awaiting forced repatriation to Aotearoa, where they know no-one and have absolutely no wish to be.

This man means business and - as I saw for myself in Sydney last week - he has his subjects eating from his hand.

However, never fear, New Zealanders, Kelvin “Serco” Davis is on the case though after predictable on-site delays, he is now home and matters on hold.

However, he had the initiative to make the journey, waited patiently at the gates of the “AlcaTraz”of the South Seas to be “processed” in some way, before being permitted to enter the fortress and speak to as many of the incarcerated Kiwis as he could reach as they went about their daily business breaking rocks and sewing mail bags.

Again, his photogenic features have been much in evidence second only, perhaps, to those of the handsome Richie McC - as he, Kelvin, attempts to sort out this uncalled-for Trans-Tasman imbroglio. vin 1 (or even two) Key and Little 0 (between them). So, “Vote for Kelvin; he gets things done”.

Meanwhile, the highly controversial TPPA (Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement) seems to have done the National Party in general and número primo negotiator, Mr Tim Groser, in particular, a power of good.

Latest polls have National up another 5 per cent, the massed Opposition down all over the place. Maybe the last-minute intervention on the side of the angels by former PM Helen Clark really did convince the doubters that Mr Groser was right after all. It seems to me there is a very strong opinion growing in these parts that Ms Clark “has to be” the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, and the successful completion of the tangled TPPA consultations will somehow help her cause.

Already, there is a groundswell of support for this latest exercise in international unanimity, significantly absent while the details of the agreement were being thrashed out, mostly at three o’clock in the morning in a darkened hall in Atlanta, Georgia.

And now, Arise Sir Richie!

1 small bunch spinach, blanched, drained and chopped 1/4 c pinenuts 1 c fresh breadcrumbs 1 egg, beaten 2 x pork fillets Streaky bacon (optional) ■ Mix the spinach, pinenuts, breadcrumbs and egg together.

■ Push a steel through the pork fillet and pipe the seasoning through.

■ Preheat the oven to 170°C. ■ Place the pork in a baking dish and cook for 35 - 40 minutes until the pork is cooked. The juices will run clear when the pork is gently pierced with a knife.

■ Wrap the pork fillet in streaky bacon before roasting (optional).

Diet fads, Global dairy prices fall, upgrade not likely Paleo give grains bad name

By AnnA Hyslop Dieting fads and self-diagnosed intolerances are dramatically altering the consumption of grains and legumes in New Zealand and impacting on growers, according to a national survey.

Over 500 people aged 2-70 years participated in the recent New Zealand Grains and Legumes Consumption and Attitudinal Study, which compared New Zealanders’ eating habits with those of our transTasman counterparts.

The survey, run by the Grain and Legumes Nutritional Council (GLNC), considered the consumption of different food categories, quantities and consumer profiles to gather a broad and accurate picture of consumer behaviours.

It found that New Zealand consumers have had a dramatic overall change in attitudes and consumption since similar information was collected in 2011.

Included in the survey were core grain products like breads and cereals, as well as non-core grain foods which covered a range of soy products, sweet baking and takeaways.

It was found that 95 per cent of New Zealanders are consuming grain foods, with men eating more than twice the number of serves per day than women.

Breads are the most commonly consumed foods, followed by breakfast cereals, of which wheat biscuits and oats are the most common types.

Results also showed that females are significantly more likely to avoid gluten and grain foods than males, attributing this behaviour mostly to weight loss. Respondents from this group said the gluten-containing products made them feel ‘bloated’ and they avoided them to ‘maintain energy throughout the day.’

Females aged 19 to 30 were the most likely group for these behaviours, and most of those who cited gluten intolerance and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) acknowledged they were self-diagnosed.

New dieting fads such as the low-carb high-fat diet, the Paleo diet and a mainstream shift to gluten-free diets appear to support a desire for lower grain consumption.

The Grains and Legumes Nutritional Council general manager Michelle Broom said the Paleo movement has seriously damaged the reputation of grains in the food industry.

“Even though diets like Paleo are nearly impossible to sustain, the belief that grains are ‘bad for you’ has spread so rapidly that many consumers are reluctant to trust one of our most reliable and nutritious food sources,” Ms Broom said.

“There is so much fear and confusion around what we put into our bodies that the word ‘refined’ has come to mean something other than ‘to break down grain’.”

The shift in attitudes is affecting New Zealand grain and legume growers.

“The apprehension towards grains and legumes inevitably effects our growers. As demand decreases, their crops are often coming second to other food alternatives,” FAR CEO Nick Pyke said.

Mr Pyke believes that the lack of nutritional knowledge around grains and pulses needs to be addressed, much as knowledge about the benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption has been.

The chances of an upgrade in Fonterra’s farmgate milk price forecast became more remote yesterday after world dairy prices fell by by 7.4 per cent at the GlobalDairyTrade auction.

The decline was sharper than futures market pricing had suggested.

Wholemilk powder prices, the key product for determining Fonterra’s farmgate milk price, fell by 8.0 per cent to US$2453 a tonne – well short of the US$3000 that farmers would be comfortable with.

Another key product, skim milk powder,

also fell by 8.0 per cent, to US$2018 a tonne.

Price falls were across the board, with butter milk powder dropping by 9.4 per cent to US$1844 a tonne and rennet casein falling by 11.2 per cent to US$5469 a tonne.

The market has chopped and changed in recent months, with prices firming dramatically over August and September, only to fall by 3.1 per cent at the last sale October 21.

Jon Spainhour, broker and partner Chicago-based dairy specialist, Rice Dairy, said buyers had “stepped back” from the market after its sharp run higher over. He

expected prices to fall again at the next auction later this month.

Fonterra has a $4.60 per kg of milksolids farmgate milk price forecast on its books – well short of the $5.30 a kg required for most farmers to reach break even. The cooperative is expected to revise its forecast later this month.

$100,000 fix to protect river birds

The Department of Conservation is looking for up to $100,000 annually to fund a predator control programme to protect vulnerable nesting birds in the upper Rakaia riverbed.

Senior ranger Paul Gasson floated the idea at a recent combined meeting of the Ashburton and Selwyn-Waihora zone committees.

New Zealand is the only country in the world where birds have adapted to breed in the braided riverbeds, Mr Gasson said.

“The breeds that inhabit braided rivers are specialists, including the wrybill, the only bird in the world whose beak bends off to the side,” he said.

“Bird watchers travel from overseas to see this bird, it’s on their tick list, and large numbers of the total population nest on the Rakaia.”

Wrybills are classified as nationally vulnerable as a species, and fellow braided river nester, the black-fronted tern as nationally critical.

Black-billed gulls, which favour nesting further down the river in large colonies are also vulnerable to predators.

Stoats, ferrets, weasels and feral cats are not the only introduced pests threatening the survival of these birds. Hedgehogs, rats and possums also prey on the eggs – which are easily ac-

cessible on the ground.

The ubiquitous black-backed gull presents a further threat.

Mr Gasson said he had watched the voracious predator carry off dotterel and highly endangered black stilt chicks.

“If we don’t do predator control these birds are in real trouble,” Mr Gasson said.

“DOC is now focusing on braided rivers and is trapping in the upper Rangitata on a large scale.”

The trapping plan identifies a large river bight, approximately 50 hectare, adjacent to a main channel which deters predators on one side.

The designated nesting area is cleared of predators prior to the vulnerable species arrival, and protected by a buffer of traps on the other side of the bight.

In addition to the three to five proposed mammalian predator control sites, DOC’s plans include poisoning and shooting black-backed gulls, and weed control in the riverbeds.

Under this scenario, three sites would be established in the upper Rakaia riverbed, and two below the gorge.

“DOC has a responsibility for species regeneration – but we can’t fund it,” Mr Gasson said.

Mr Gasson said to provide a complete service, including weed control at all five proposed sites on the Rakaia River would cost about $100,000 for six years.

Hoggets eased in price in line with schedule reductions, but prime ewes in good condition were still in demand.

Medium black face spring lambs in the store section sold from $69$72, while ewes with lambs at foot realised $54-$62.

Heavy prime spring lambs fetched $115-$123, medium weights $95-$110 and lighter lambs

$85-$93. Heavy hoggets made $118-$125, and medium weights $112-$115.

Kiwi electric farm bike generat The Ubco 2×2 electric farm bike will be in production by Christmas with initial marketing aimed at New Zealand and Australia. ecent drive time with Hyundai’s new Tucson, which replaces the slightly smaller ix35, showed it is a major step forward with its quicklynoticed advances in its driving dynamics, comfort and refinement, and that how closely it is now related to the Santa Fe. www.guardianonline.co.nz Ashburton County Lions At their October tea meeting members of the Ashburton County Lions Club were treated to a powerful and thought provoking speech presented by Fergielyn Catayoc. Fergielyn was sponsored by the club at the Lions Young Speech Makers Completion held in Oamaru earlier this year. Her speech was on the topic of how our personal identities create the fibres that weave together to create the fabric of our national identity. This earned her a well-deserved third place in the competition and we thank her for coming and sharing it with us. Donations from the club we given to the Karori Lions Spirit of Adventure Voyage of Inspiration Project, the Ashburton Safer Community Council Families without Violence Programme, the Mid-South Canterbury Plunket Society to help purchase a freezer for their rooms., and the Lions Club NZ Child Mobility Foundation.

The next two big events on the club calendar are the Garden Ramble on November 21 and the Toot for Tucker Collection on November 30. The club is grateful to the community for helping make the Toot for Tucker collection such an outstanding success every year and we look forward to receiving this fantastic support again this year.

After another busy year members will be rewarded with some relaxation and fun at the up and coming movie night, mystery outing and Christmas party.

Bit of a change with Rose and Iris strumming on the old ukeleles while the others sang along. When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold and Haeri Mai Rose chose Snow Waltz and Song for Anna and Verna Carnival is Over and Comin’ ‘Round Mountain.

Shirley gave the evening a bit of variety, and gave us three beautiful pieces on the accordion. Old Rugged Cross, In the Garden and Fields of Athenry.

And Janet sqeezed out a joke there somewhere.

Ashburton Golf Club Tales from the tour. The jolly boys have taken the mount by storm. Six of us are currently up in Tauranga playing some wonderful courses. Everyone is currently behaving themselves, and no major stories as yet. Mr Hunt is the only unbeaten player so far to everyone’s surprise. We have however had two rounds bought for not reaching the ladies tee and one for a gin shot, all shall remain nameless.

Well done to the Aorangi ladies for a great result in the SI interprovincials. Will sign off now as it’s hard to type on my phone as Hoppy bounces the minibus towards Matamata. Good golfing.

Mini speaker was Sonjia Mee whose family farmed in the Rakaia Gorge. After leaving school she worked for Mount Cook Airlines in Christchurch.

She progressed to promotional work for the company in the USA, and Australia and recounted some entertaining anecdotes from her experiences. When the Britannia visited Lyttelton with the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Princess Anne as passengers, Sonjia was asked to accompany the Princess socially. Sonjia gave a humorous account of how she got last minute answers to the “What am I going to wear?” and “How am I going to get there?” questions.

Guest Speaker was Andrew Dalziel, who gave an amusing talk about his life so far. He grew up in Port Chalmers with a family connection with the sea. His mother’s family owned a butchery where he had his first work experience. While at university studying commerce he worked as a hospital cleaner gaining more life experience. He became a participant and instructor in the martial art Tai Kwan Do eventually achieving black Belt status. He took up power lifting so his strength, size and martial arts skills made him a natural as a “bouncer” and “minder” for visiting celebrities. In one of his earlier local body roles he was responsible a Zoo, and once received a phone call along the lines of “the lion has escaped.”

Our top scorer and overall top scorer was Irene Herron with 65 points, which is the maximum amount of points which could be scored. Runner up with the point scoring was Stephen Kyle with 61 points. A thoroughly enjoyable day with a total of 20 players taking part.

Our next local event is on today when we have a “Bring a mate and a Plate” social day. Members are asked if they could bring along someone who may be interested in giving the game a go, followed by afternoon tea.

We have players entered in the Clubs NZ Tournament next weekend.

Ashburton Ostomy Society The Ashburton Ostomy Society held their last meeting for the year on October 28 at the Savage Club Rooms. On October 3 our branch celebrated World Ostomy Day with a sausage sizzle held in the Mitre 10 carpark.

Mitre 10 generously donated 50 sausages plus the BBQ. Theme for this year was Many Stories, One Voice. Along with the food we handed out information brochures and copies of our magazine to help raise awareness.

It was a cold day unfortunately with not so many people around but a tasty sausage was a good warmer for passers-by and also many questions were asked about our society so it was a successful endeavour all round. Christmas function this year will be held at Miyabi Japanese Restaurant on December 2. There has been a good response from members wishing to attend so a reminder to all to ring either Sally Lambert or Dennis Blincoe ASP if you wish to attend.

Roger Martin was our speaker. He gave an informative and interesting talk on various aspects of gardening with special emphasis on lawn care so as you drive around Ashburton and see green healthy lawns on display, chances are you are looking at a lawn cared for by an Ostomy Society member. Our next meeting will be on February 24 which ostomates and their partners are invited to attend.

Tinwald Garden Club Twenty-three members met at the Tinwald Hall on October 22, the two minute speaker was Pam Tait, who spoke about the Floral Art and Cut Flower classes at the forthcoming A & P Show.

The club bus trip on October 8 was reported, having visited Broadfields, a garden of national significance and Silverwood, a pretty farm garden not far from Leeston.

The speakers were Lynette and Michelle from K&L Nurseries, Leeston, who talked about their glasshouses in which they grow gerberas and open headed roses. We were told about their nontoxic spray programmes, their fertilising and irrigating regimes and general care and maintenance. We were shown beautiful examples and were amazed to hear that they pick every day of the year. They have floral shops in both Hornby and Avonhead Mall and sell their flowers by auction three times weekly in Tower Junction.

They heat their greenhouses with special wood chips and have won three Ballance Awards.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE CHERTSEY/PENDARVES Eleven members gathered on October 1 at the Ashburton Heritage Centre for a guided tour. Michael Hanrahan, Museum Curator, provided interesting information as we viewed the exhibits and the storage areas. Large map cabinets and movable units for storage were most impressive. A first class facility for our town.

Our meeting was held at Judith Nichol’s residence.

The Motto was “Life; no dress rehearsal – no refund” and the Roll Call was a treasured item from grandparents. The Replies included jewellery, furniture, a table cloth and a glass rolling pin.

Birthdays this month: Judy on the 9th and Joan the 25th. The President, Janice Allen thanked Judith for her hospitality and the afternoon concluded with a cuppa.

FAIRTON Fairton’s meeting on October 1 was held at Rosebank with seven members in attendance. Barbara welcomed everyone and opened the meeting with the Aspirations.

Our Motto was, “Much talent is often lost for the wont of a little courage.” With business concluded, Barbara reported on the Netherby Home Industries Show and Veronica on the half-yearly meeting at Rakaia both of which were enjoyed by all who attended.

Best wishes and flowers were given to one member recovering from an operation and another celebrating her Golden Wedding Anniversary.

Our guest for the afternoon was Judy Hay demonstrating the art of card-making, with a lot of fun and laughter we all completed one. Judy was thanked and presented with a fruit tray.

After enjoying a very pleasant afternoon a cuppa and social time followed.

HINDS The October meeting of Hinds WI was held on the 28th in the Davison room with a very good attendance.

Rosa Bennett, President welcomed members and also Jude Vaughan, Federation Presi-

dent. Following the Ode and the Aspirations and the formal part of the meeting which included the forthcoming A & P Show Bay and tray entries, the Delegate’s report on the Half- Yearly meeting held at Rakaia, an outline of the what is expected for the Charities Commission, the financial report given by Mrs Ruth Sheppard and a call for donations for ADARDS “cuppa for a cause”. Birthday ladies were: Elizabeth Bell and Jude Vaughan who were given a gift, and a raffle was circulated for funds.

October’s “thought for the day” was – “the grass is always greener if you care to stand and water it.”

A “Show and tell” of craft items was the next on the programme. The items included a display of Christmas cards joined together (like a concertina), home- made Christmas cards and a pair of stretch bootees, envelopes made from calendar pictures, a beautifully embroidered cushion, a Golden Wedding cardboard cube containing a set of family photos, and a dressed up soft toy goose.

A story including members’ names hidden in the text was read out as well.

During the meeting one of the members heard a train whistle sound, so many of the members went AWOL, dashing out the door and over the road to the railway line.

The “Passchendale” train had stopped for a few minutes so local people and school children were able to get a look at this lovely old train. When order was restored, the meeting resumed then a lovely afternoon tea was served by the hostesses Ruth Sheppard and Rona McConnell.

RAKAIA A rather smaller number than usual managed to attend the October meeting, but all present were delighted to hear the letters of appreciation from other branches who had attended the Federation meeting at Rakaia.

At the October meeting, much time was spent organising our entries for the Ashburton Show, particularly the “Decorated Bay” which we enter every year; on the stipulated theme.

The motto of the October meeting was “There are only ages of women - young, middle-age and won-

derful.” The Roll-Call was a recipe exchange and in the craft section of the competitions was a School photo. This would have been good for a laugh but we didn’t get round to it, with such a busy agenda.

The Monica Johnson trophy was won by Pat Duncan with some beautiful blooms.

TINWALD Our delegates attended the Half-Yearly meeting at Rakaia, Tinwald gaining first place for the most points in the competitions wining the Nola Bird trophy. A most delicious lunch was served by the Rakaia Ladies.

The indoor bowls play-off saw Christchurch East winning with 158 points and Tinwald the Runnersup on l56 and a half points.

October being our car trip, we decided that Geraldine would be our destination The first stop was to an orchard and cafe, north of Geraldine where we enjoyed morning tea.

Vice-president Ruth Logan presided over a recent meeting where the Motto for the day was “You can’t expect life to be one sweet song, if you don’t provide some of the harmony,” and the Roll Call – easy picnic food – listed favourites included sandwiches, hot chicken, egg ‘n bacon pie and quiche.

Members were also thanked for the collection of grocery items for Ronald McDonald House.

Our speaker for the afternoon was Sarah Clifford, founder of “Canbeads.” Sarah talked on how Canbeads started and how it helped her through her treatment; she is now holding workshops helping others. Members donated a box of beads.

Wakanui’s next meeting is to be an outing to Mayfield on October 28.

College 1st XI set for day two

Ashburton College’s 1st XI will head into day two of two with confidence against Shirley Boys’ High School in Christchurch on Saturday.

The home side were 22 for 2 in their second innings when play ended last Saturday, needing another 98 runs to send College into bat again.

After a drizzly few days, College captain Kieran Hunt won the toss and made the wise choice of putting Shirley Boys’ into bat.

The decision paid off with Shirley all out in the 37th over for a paltry 70.

Shirley’s opening batsmen survived the bowling of Josh Buchanan and Sam Hall but could not weather Hunt’s barrage.

Betham jnr claims title Former Kiwis and Warriors enforcer Monty Betham matched his father’s exploits by becoming a New Zealand boxing champion at the Super 8 Fight Night in Auckland.

Betham fulfilled his longheld ambition to claim a national title by winning the NZNBF cruiserweight belt with a unanimous decision victory over James Langton in a hardfought clash over 10 rounds.

The 37-year-old was pleased to have followed Monty Betham snr, a former national middle and heavyweight title holder, and two-time Commonwealth middleweight champion.

“I love the sport of boxing and have loved it for some time, even from back in the early days when my dad did what he did,” said Betham. “To get a New Zealand belt, which

This time Josh Buchanan broke the opening partnership quickly thanks to a good slip catch by Liam O’Connor. Sam Hall then had to thank Kieran Hunt for his wicket as the captain dived at gully to catch McDonald. The two remaining Shirley players managed to survive the rotation and stumps were drawn with Shirley on 22-2, needing another 98 to make Ashburton College bat again. Day two will begin at Shirley Boys’ on Saturday.

Fordyce well on road to recovery

Edmund Fordyce was scheduled to receive the most improved golf croquet player of the year award at New Zealand Croquet’s annual dinner in Wellington last month, before his congenital heart condition took a turn for the worse.

After becoming unusually listless and unable to eat, Fordyce was admitted to Christchurch Hospital. From there, the Mt Hutt College student was rushed to Starship Children’s Health Hospital in Auckland, by air ambulance, diagnosed with heart failure.

The 15-year-old was born with significant heart abnormalities and has already received two donor aortic valves in his short life, before having a mechanical aortic valve and his fifth pacemaker fitted last month.

Fordyce, who won New Zealand Croquet’s award for the most improved association croquet player last year and placed seventh in the Under-21 World Golf Croquet Championships, is now on the slow road to recovery.

Fordyce remains positive and is improving each day since his lifechanging operation.

“I’m obviously pleased that the operation was a success,” he said.

“I’m feeling stronger each day physically, but, at the same time, know that it takes weeks to recover fully because I’ve had to undergo open heart surgery before.”

The young player is gunning to compete at both New Zealand Croquet’s Golf and Association Annual Championships in January, before heading to the World Croquet Federation’s World Association Championships in Florida in April. New Zealand Croquet submitted two wildcard applications for the World Association Championships for Fordyce and another promising young player, 16-year-old Felix Webby from Taranaki, and these were the only two granted by the organising body.

Fordyce will lock horns with the sport’s finest in Florida before turning his aspirations towards earning a spot in the New Zealand team to defend world croquet’s most coveted trophy, the MacRobertson Shield, in Rancho Mirage, California, in 2017.
