Removing the cost stress from weddings

Ashburton has seen pop-up shops, pop-up gardens and even pop-up playgrounds.

But what about pop-up weddings?

Local celebrant Larraine McQuarters believes she has the solution for couples wanting to wed with “all of the emotion and none of the debt”.

She has launched packages she hopes will be memorable yet affordable, and can bring together the celebrant, venue, photographer, caterer, cake and even the celebratory bubbles for less than $3000.

McQuarters said she was inspired to start offering pop-up weddings because not everyone wants or can afford a wedding running into the tens of thousands of dollars, and not everyone wants to spend an entire day on their wedding.

However, her new packages offer two and a half hour weddings in an affordable, relaxed and fun format, she said.

“This way we cover all the bases, everyone has a lovely gathering and the couple is set

to commence their adventures together without the burden of paying off that one day for months or even years to come,” she said.

“In the end it is the sincerity and deep sense of commitment that are the all-important factors in cementing a successful union.”

Wedding planning website MyKiwiWedding reports that the average Kiwi spends around $35,000 on their big day, but pop-up weddings are the increasingly popular new “chic alternative”, alongside backyard weddings and weekday celebrations.

It is the first time pop-up weddings have been launched in Ashburton.

McQuarters concedes that pop-up weddings won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but said the way a wedding is planned is entirely up to the couple concerned.

“For some a larger wedding is the dream and that’s ok too ... however, in the end, a successful marriage will come from within the couple’s hearts and the support of their loved ones.”

Celebrant Larraine McQuarters has unveiled a concept for locals wanting to tie the knot without the stress of a sizable price tag.

Driver faces multiple charges

The man who was arrested in Tinwald on Thursday following a 180km police pursuit will face charges of reckless driving, failing to stop for police, possession of a taser, and stealing $52 worth of petrol from a petrol station.

Thirty-two-year-old Andrew David Hunter, from Nelson, was remanded in custody after appearing in Christchurch District Court yesterday.

He is expected to enter pleas to

the charges on May 25. Prior to the pursuit on Thursday, Hunter was wanted in Nelson on seven charges, including assault and unlawfully possessing firearms, police said.

The pursuit began at around 12.07pm on Thursday, when police attempted to stop a vehicle in Waikari that they believed the man was travelling in.

Throughout the afternoon, the pursuit was abandoned twice for safety reasons.

Hunter was also allegedly in-

volved in a petrol drive off in Christchurch and ran over road spikes on the corner of Beach Road and River Road before he was stopped and arrested in Tinwald at 3.30pm.

Meanwhile, parents are praising the reactions of staff at Active Explorers, a Tinwald early childhood centre that went into lockdown when Hunter was arrested outside.

“They had things locked down and under control before the police even had their hands on the

guy,” said a resident near to Active Explorers, who also has children that attend the early childhood centre.

The response from staff was outstanding, she said, and the centre deserve a heap of recognition for the way that they handled things.

“It was really professional,” she said.

“It’s nice to know that kids are going to be well looked after in a situation like that.”

centre manager Kylie Mactier said she was really proud of the team and the way they responded upon seeing the commotion.

Staff had previously been trained in lockdown procedures and knew how to react quickly and efficiently, she said.

On Thursday, police said they would like to thank members of the public who were affected by the ongoing operation.

They said they are unable to comment further, as the matter is now before the court.

Health care workers call for support

Toots, waves and cheers of support made it very clear to Ashburton’s health care workers that the public is on their side when it comes to wanting more money spent in the health sector.

Ashburton’s nurses’ rally was one of dozens that are being held around New Zealand to highlight the critical state of the country’s health sector.

The rallies are part of a campaign to garner public support for fully funded, quality, public health services and to secure fair recognition for the value the nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants bring to the well-being of all New Zealanders.

And that need is just as great in towns the size of Ashburton as it is in large cities, said Ashburton nurses Paula Burgess and Jane Worsfold.

now regular staff shortages, a situation that was not only detrimental to staff health but also compromised patient safety, they said.

“We’re only asking for what’s fair so we can provide the quality health care that everyone deserves,” Worsfold said.

Between the two women they have more than 50 years of nursing experience and say they’ve watched conditions steadily deteriorate.

“I’ve never felt as unsafe as I do now with not enough staff on the floor. We’re only asking for

enough staff to be able to do our jobs properly, the way we’ve been trained,” she said.

With Ashburton having a greater proportion of its population in the older age group, the pressure on the health system locally was even greater. In addition, Ashburton’s transient population put pressure on hospital services as people who did not have established access to primary health care often turned up at the hospital because they knew they’d receive the care they needed, she said.

12-hour shifts to ensure there was adequate cover for patients and that was resulting in burn-out, ill health and ultimately in nurses leaving the profession, Burgess said.

“They’re relying on our goodwill not to leave when our shifts are over.”

Last week the two Acute Assessment Unit nurses said they worked shifts where there was no time for meal breaks.

Burgess is a duty manager and said rostering was a nightmare because so many nurses were simply too burned out to do extra shifts.

“And people don’t feel they can ring in sick because they don’t want someone else to have to work a 12-hour shift to cover.”

While going on strike is the last tool in the health care workers’ kit, Burgess said she had been down that road before in 2001.

“No one wants to do it but it’s the only way to make people see how serious we are about this.

Our patients deserve good care and we can’t deliver this.”

The majority of nurses at Ashburton Hospital were in their 40s and 50s and had been forced to work within an underfunded industry for years. They were now burned out and leaving the profession.

Young nurses were heading overseas to work in countries where pay rates were higher and conditions were significantly better, they said.

The New Zealand Nurses’ Organisation (NZNO) campaign is designed to show the government that New Zealanders need it to prioritise rebuilding a quality public health system by investing in nursing, the largest health workforce.

District health board nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants earlier voted to reject the 20 DHBs’ pay offer as falling short of making up for underfunding and understaffing in the health system.

Goran Milosavljevic was allegedly attacked while at Countdown, and died from his injuries a day later. The store was blessed by a kaumatua on Thursday night. ManurewaPapakura Ward councillor Daniel Newman, who is now acting as a spokesperson for the family, said they wanted privacy. It was an “extremely traumatic” time and every support was being offered to them, he said.

For the past 12 months the bank operated from a temporary premises on Tancred Street while its East Street building underwent a full restoration and seismic upgrade.

On Monday it reopens for business, same bank, new look.

And that new look will see Heartland Bank step right into the 21st century, branch manager Andrew Wilson said.

It’s the latest exhibition to touch down in town, and it’s enrapturing locals with depictions of the world’s wonders – from the Northern Lights to the Giant’s Causeway, Mt Fuji and our very own Moeraki.

But it comes with one major difference – all exhibits are 50cm square quilts.

The World Exhibition of Quilts is now on show in Tinwald, bringing together “wonders of the world” themed works of 90 quilters from France, New Zealand and Japan.

Brought to town by Ashburton quilter Marie Williams and housed at Annie’s Country Quilts on Archibald Street, Williams said the exhibition has attracted a steady stream of visitors since opening yesterday morning.

The annual exhibition is organised by the Nihon Heritage Quilters’ Guild in Japan, who invite two countries to take part with them. It is the first year New Zealand has been selected, and the exhibition is currently on tour around the country.

Williams said all quilters were given eight months to prepare their quilt, and many would have been hard at work that whole time.

“We’ve taken the opportunity to redesign the branch layout as well,” he said.

The new-look bank has harnessed technology to step into the future and begin the move away from cash teller services.

Cash withdrawals, cheque deposits and some cash deposits, will however still be available via an ATM machine in the branch.

Perhaps the biggest change, Wilson said, is the development of a new retail contact centre on the upper level.

“This contact centre is providing local jobs and has room to grow as our business grows.

I’m really excited about this investment in my home town,” he said.

Ultimately Ashburton will be the bank’s national headquarters for a range of electronic banking platforms, Wilson said.

“We want to fill this building with Heartland operations, anything that can be done from an electronic perspective.”

In the new banking environment the work of the traditional

money processing teller was moving into the customer sales and service area, he said.

“They’ll be having conversations rather than counting cash.”

The new look branch opens for business at 9am on Monday and to celebrate, customers will be able to enjoy a cup cake with each business transaction.

Heartland’s association with the Ashburton District dates back to 1875 when the Ashburton Permanent Building and Investment Society was founded.

A construction roller has gone over the side of a bank in Queenstown, leaving a man with moderate injuries. A Southern Fire and Emergency spokesman said a fire crew attended the incident on Kingston Road and had extracted one person from the roller. St John South Island region spokesman Gerard Campbell said they received the call-out about 4.15pm. “There’s one male patient with moderate injuries and he’s been airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.”

Roofer fined A Kerikeri man who claimed he was a licensed roofer has been fined $2500. Aaron Connelly, director of Connelly Roofing Limited, has been sentenced in the Kaikohe District Court and ordered to pay a $2500 for falsely presenting himself as a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) and a member of the Roofing Association of New Zealand (Ranz), despite never being affiliated with either. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) brought the case to the Kaikohe District Court and MBIE investigations team leader Simon Thomas said the case should send a clear message to the building industry.

Chinese Village restoration no easy fix

The restoration and preservation of buildings in Ashburton’s historic Chinese settlement on Allens Road could become an expensive project for the Ashburton District Council.

A plan was prepared last year that detailed which buildings should be restored and how the site could be developed and tenders are currently open for this work.

But the project is proving to be a challenge for anyone interested in tendering for the work, said council community relations manager Vincie Billante.

“We’ve had a number of site visits as part of the tender process, but there are issues with the tenderers as they’re struggling with what exactly it is the council wants. There’s a complexity of issues there, it’s not just a simple cut and paste, it’s very complicated,” she said.

She anticipates tender prices will be high because of the poor condition of the buildings, particularly if the council wanted them restored to a water-proof standard.

“Councillors will need to decide whether they want the public to be able to go inside the buildings and that’ll come at a big cost or whether they just want the facades preserved.”

The Chinese Village working group meets in two weeks and could have to make some hard decisions, Billante said.

“Those buildings are derelict, there’s no getting around that and

there are some tough choices the working group will have to make on this.”

The old fruit shop had recently collapsed and while the shop sign had been salvaged the boards were not salvageable, she said.

The amount of work needed by structural engineers was taking a lot of time and effort and meant tenders were slow to come in. The closing date has been extended to May 14. Only out-of-town businesses had requested a site visit.

Chairman of the council’s Chinese Village working group Leen Braam is keen to find a workable solution for the buildings, but suggested council might need to look ‘outside the square’ to find an answer that was practical, aestheti-

cally pleasing and affordable.

The council’s agreement with the descendants of the Chinese families who owned the site is to manage the property and protect its heritage values through restoration.

Winz still looking for a new home The Ministry of Social Development remains hopeful of finding a new Ashburton building for its Work and Income office, which has been operating out of a temporary building since the shooting tragedy in its office nearly four years ago.

The government department has specific security requirements for the Ashburton Work

and Income office since Russell John Tully shot and killed two women working there in September 2014. He is serving a life sentence in prison.

A new building on Tancred Street now houses Oranga Tamariki Ministry for Children but Work and Income remains on a temporary site next to the Ashburton Police station.

“This set up is working and there is a degree of security for staff knowing that the police are next door,” said MSD’s Stephen Crombie, DCE corporate solutions.

“While this is in no way a permanent solution, it is allowing the ministry to be very selective in identifying long-term premises for the Ashburton office.

“The safety and security or our staff and the public who visit the office are our top priority and the ministry will not enter into an accommodation arrangement in Ashburton that compromises this.”

MSD said it had previously tested the market in Ashburton but no suitable site was available.

“We are about to re-test the

market and remain optimistic that a suitable site will eventually be found that meets the needs of the ministry and Ashburton community.”

Crombie said the department was continuing to work closely with staff, police and the Ashburton District Council to achieve the best long-term solution in Ashburton.

Ross and Lagmhor go hand-in-hand Throughout nearly 10 decades of Lagmhor School history, one fourletter surname has dominated the morning roll call.

The Ross family has forged a link to the school spanning four generations and dozens of family members – from its beginnings as a single-classroom sole charge, to its current status as a two-classroom satellite of Ashburton Borough School.

Needless to say, with the school’s centennial anniversary approaching in May, the Ross’ are gearing up to play a big part in celebrating and in remembering the school’s history.

Jock Ross said he was in the second generation of Ross’ to attend the school in the mid-1950s. He recalls how the teacher used to live in a small house on the grounds and take classes in the building which is now the school’s library.

“There were rows of desks, a big blackboard right along one wall and a big fireplace at the back,” he said. “Our teacher, he used to come in every day and give us arithmetic cards, and every single morning he’d spend the first hour of every day reading the Press. He’d stand in front of the fire for the whole hour and keep all the warmth to himself during which time he managed to puff his way through two cigarettes.

Jock was one of seven second generation Ross children to attend the school, and his own four children followed suit, along with five of his nieces and nephews.

From then, eight other “fourth generation” family members have been taught within the school grounds.

Jock’s nephew Stuart Ross said it was a “pretty unique” situation.

Many of the members of his family are now involved in fundraising and providing extra support to the school, he said, as part of a “very strong” network of parents and alumni.

“It’s a special school and that support is a real point of difference. Being rural, it’s quite nice because if we need a digger or any other machinery – if we need any work done, people are always willing to come on down and help out straight away.

Stuart said he was also grateful to Ashburton Borough School principal Sam Winterbourn for spearheading the amalgamation of Borough and Lagmhor when it was faced with closure under a government policy in 2001.

Lagmhor now offers all the benefits of both a small school and a large school, he said.

Next on the calendar for the school and its support network is the centenary in May, which will amass current and past pupils, teachers, board members and more. “It’s for anyone with anything to do with the school, family members, committees, boards,”

Jarrod Ross, chief organiser of the event, said.

Plans are under way for the celebrations on May 11 and 12, with a meet and greet on the Friday night followed by a kapa haka performance, pot-luck lunch and a look around on Saturday, leading into the main event at Hotel Ashburton on Saturday night.

Five arrested over Auckland kidnapping Two women were kidnapped, bundled into their car boot and taken on a horrific police chase after they confronted five people trying to steal their vehicle in Auckland.

Five people, four of them teenagers, have been arrested and charged after the incident that started in central Auckland – and ended 52km away at Ramarama in the Bombay Hills.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard, of Auckland, said the women were found by police in the boot of a vehicle. They had moderate injuries and were taken to Middlemore Hospital for treatment.

The incident began when the women confronted five people allegedly attempting to break into their car on Bowen Avenue, in central Auckland, about 10pm on Thursday.

“They were assaulted and then forced to comply with orders and made to walk around with the offenders while they alleg-

edly looked for a vehicle to steal,” Beard said.

“They were then forced into the boot of a stolen Mazda Demio vehicle and driven to South Auckland.”

Unaware of the earlier kidnapping or the vehicle having been stolen, a Counties Manukau Police unit saw the vehicle travelling in convoy with another car and attempted to stop them.

Both failed to stop.

“The stolen Mazda Demio continued onto the Southern Motorway and then exited at Ramarama and drove off the side of a bridge where the vehicle went down an approximately 5m bank.”

As well as the women, three alleged offenders were found at the scene and taken into custody, Beard said.

The Police Eagle helicopter found the second vehicle, now known to be stolen, at an address in Manurewa. Two more people were arrested in relation to this incident, he said.

The youngest of those arrested was aged 13. Two others were aged 15 and one was 14. The oldest was 20.

The 13-year-old girl has been referred to Youth Aid. A 14-year-old girl, two 15-yearold boys and a 20-year-old woman have each been charged with two counts of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of unlawfully taking a vehicle and unlawfully interfering with a vehicle.

One of the boys, 15, was also charged with two counts of dangerous driving.

The youths will appear in the Auckland Youth Court today.

Beard said the women and their families were being supported.

“This is really seriously offending and police are focused on ensuring the victims and their families get the support they need following this traumatic incident.

“As this matter is before the courts, we are unable to comment any further.”

Sex workers removed from skilled workers list Immigration New Zealand has removed sex workers or escorts from its skilled employment list checker online.

The agency’s area manager Stephanie Greathead said the removal of the listing from its list was to “avoid further confusion” that people could get a visa as skilled prostitutes.

The website had previously indicated that sex work/escort is a skilled employment and applicants could claim points if they were paid at or above $36.44 per hour, had a recognised qualification or at least three years of relevant work experience.

It defined a sex worker or escort as someone who provided clients with sexual services or social companionship.

“INZ does not grant visas to persons who are intending to provide commercial sexual services,” Greathead said.

“This is in line with the Prostitution Reform Act 2003 that states that only New Zealand citizens and residents can legally work in the sex industry. ” Sex worker/escort is on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) list which

appeared on the INZ website.

“INZ has no control over the occupations included on this list,” Greathead said.

“INZ has removed this occupation from our Skill Shortage List checker to avoid any further confusion that means we would approve a visa for this occupation.”

A hospitality worker originally from Brazil who wanted to be known only as Joy said she was disappointed to find the link to the information no longer worked.

Joy, who is on a work visa, has worked as an escort for the past three years.

She had hoped to gain extra points from being a skilled escort for her residency application.

“I understand I will not be granted a visa to work as an escort, but I thought that I will be able to gain extra points to help me get my residence visa,” Joy said.

She argued that her escort work – which did not include sex with clients – would fit the definition of “providing clients with social companionship”.

Reporter Sue Newman talks to two of those involved in taking the performing arts centre from dream to reality.

lmost 30 years ago Alan McQuarters stood on Wills Street and gazed at what was then Ashburton’s elderly Regent Theatre.

Where some saw a movie theatre that had seen better days, Alan saw a performing arts centre. He shared his vision with friend Russell Anstiss. Russell thought he’d taken leave of his senses.

“I looked at Alan and told him he was moonstruck,” he said.

Alan refused to give up on that dream and person by person he converted the non-believers and finally the Ashburton Performing Arts Trust was born.

Wind the clock forward a decade or so and Russell admits Alan was a man with a vision. He dreamed of a performing arts centre that would double as a town hall. This month Ashburton celebrates the 10th year since that centre opened for business.

in the early1990s lie thousands of hours of plans made and plans abandoned, new plans made and brought to fruition.

The distance travelled can be counted in millions of hours of volunteer time and millions of dollars loaned, invested and gifted.

It’s a ride Russell says he’s enjoyed every inch of the way, but it’s one he never intended to take.

He left on an overseas trip in 1992 having no real ties to Ashburton’s theatre scene; he returned to find he had been elected chairman of the group charged with planning and building a performing arts centre.

Hours of dreaming and planning followed and in 1998, the trust made its first move, buying the elderly theatre and a block of shops that gave it a large site on the northern side of the Cass and Wills streets corner. They envis-

aged a new picture theatre and their performing arts centre standing proudly on that site.

“If we hadn’t done that the theatre could have been sold and bulldozed and the picture theatre was probably the most consistently used form of entertainment in town,” Russell said.

That purchase effectively removed any physical stumbling blocks to the development of the performing arts centre, but there was still the issue of money.

The first step, however, had to be building a new cinema. The trust

built today’s multi-cinema theatre, eventually selling this to private owners and clearing the way for the original Regent’s demolition.

But before that could happen, there would be countless hours of hard work finding out what was needed by user groups and working out what would actually fit on the land available. To open up options the trust also bought land at the rear of the theatre intending to use part of this as car parking.

Russell reckons there were 10 years of planning and talking before the trust was even close to taking the project to the community.

That didn’t happen until 2004 when the ambitious project finally became public property. Then, the combined town hall and performing arts complex were estimated to come with a $4.7 million price tag.

A presentation was made to the Ashburton District Council along with a request for $1 million in funds.

Mayor Murray Anderson was keen. The council would do its utmost to help the trust achieve its goal; it had to proceed, there was no option, the mayor said at that time. The handover of $1m as required was a given.

With that support on board, we knew the project’s time had come, Russell said.

And that meant putting his head on the block and committing the community to raising $1.2 million through sponsorship, naming rights and donations. Additional money would be sought from several charitable trusts.

And the money started to flow – the Ashburton Trust, $800,000, the Mid South Canterbury Trust, $300,000. The Ashburton Guardian kicked off corporate donations with $100,000 and other businesses followed.

But as the money came in, the cost began to rise. By November 2005 it sat at $5.6 million.

One of the bigger fundraisers also started that year with the Ashburton Operatic Society taking over a portion of the land at the rear of the site on which it would build two houses. These would later be auctioned and $200,000 dropped into the trust’s bank account.

Another year ticked by, the old theatre was still standing and there was still a large gap between the money needed and the money raised.

“There’s no getting away from it, we were up against it financially,” Russell said.

An application for funds from a grant that should have guaranteed funding – the government’s significant community-based projects fund – was turned down and for a short time the performing arts centre looked in doubt if a community bail-out couldn’t be found.

Russell and his team refused to give up.

“That just made me very, very determined to forge ahead,” he said.

The trust’s ultimate vote of confidence in the future of the project came when the Regent’s demolition was signed off. Work started in September 2006 and was completed before the end of that month.

The old theatre was rubble, funds were short for the new centre, but the trust was pushing on undeterred.

Finally on March 5, 2007 the day some thought would never come, arrived. The first sod was turned on the new performing arts centre site.

In the years since it had first dropped onto the drawing board in 1999, the build cost had escalated alarmingly. now sitting at $7.2 million.

“He could see it wasn’t a tent, it was a state of the art opera theatre.

“In fact I don’t think anyone on the trust actually envisaged the building as it is today.”

Looking back at his 16 years leading the trust, Russell said it was exciting to be part of a project that galvanised the com-

He has less praise, however, for the lack of Government support.

“I remember at the opening.

Prime Minister Helen Clark was sitting on stage and she bent down to get something out of her handbag. I really thought it would be a cheque. It was her handkerchief. Not a cent came from the government, but buckets of money came from the commu-

nity.”

He says he’s proud of what’s been achieved by the community, but is adamant if it hadn’t been for Alan McQuarters’ courage in dreaming big, the project may never have happened.

“He was absolutely the catalyst of this, I was just the community driver.

“It’s Ashburton’s money providers who have built this. It’s

a brilliant asset for the town. I never had any doubt it would be successful.”

Russell said the trust was also delighted that the complex opened with everything that was planned in place. No short-cuts, no compromises. And he credits much of that achievement to architect Stewart Ross who bought into the project and concept from day one.

oday Roger Farr looks at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre and calls it his second home.

He’s the man who has driven the centre from the day it opened and says he’s as passionate about the complex and the role it plays in the district as he was when he first signed on for a one-year, temporary appointment.

For years Roger has been the nuts and bolts man who was happier behind the scenes than on stage. His specialty is the technical side of things and there’s not much about lighting, sound and special effects he doesn’t know.

His involvement also goes back to the centre’s foundations.

Back when it was still a dream, Roger had just taken over as chairman of Ashburton Operatic, today’s Variety Theatre. As planning for the project firmed up, operatic wanted to play a strong role in fundraising and that meant coming up with a bold plan.

“As president of Variety Theatre I was on the trust and we were looking at what to do with the excess land we’d bought for the carpark.

I said, ‘why not put two houses on there and sell them’,” Roger said.

The idea captured the trust’s imagination, but even better, it attracted the support of two people who were to play a key role in ensuring its success, Nigel Smith and Alan McCormick.

“It couldn’t have happened without them. We put it in their hands and the amount of community support generated was amazing.”

Two town houses were built in what became known as Project 101. The build generated a huge amount of public interest and when the two properties were auctioned, the prices were good, seeing $200,000 deposited in the trust’s bank account.

As the new centre took shape, the operatic team began to plan a show that would be a fitting tribute to its past, but would not put too much pressure on what would be newly installed technical equipment.

A compilation of numbers from many shows from the past was created and in the countdown to opening night, Roger says most of the moments and events were lost in a blur of last-minute activity.

“There were still builders on site on opening night and we were still in the auditorium putting hand rails on at midday.”

If things went wrong, Roger can’t remember.

He looks back and compares the old and the new.

quakes it wouldn’t have been standing afterwards,” Roger said.

“It was amazing the shows that were put on in that theatre in spite of its shortcomings.”

Today the theatre is a community asset vested in a trust and administered by a board, but it is Roger and his team who are the face of the complex.

They take an obvious pride in how far the event centre has come in 10 short years, the range of shows it now hosts and, importantly for Roger, there has been significant growth in the strength of local performing arts across all ages.

“The level of local productions is absolutely outstanding,” he said.

The event centre will be marking its 10th birthday with glamour show Mamma Mia!, with Roger doing double duty as centre manager and the show’s director. An official function will be held prior to the

show’s opening and a celebration cake will be cut in the foyer with cast members post show.

The 10th anniversary will be a quieter affair than the opening when the red carpet was rolled out and crowds dressed to the nines to celebrate the event.

Celebrations won’t end when the curtain falls for the final time on Mamma Mia!’s season, as Roger plans to bring a lead act to town towards the end of the year to mark the anniversary in another way. Who and when, he’s keeping under wraps.

As the event centre moves into its second decade, it won’t be standing still. Roger wants to see use of its various spaces increase, the range and number of shows staged increase and he hopes to grow his technical team to a level where they can be hired out to events around Canterbury.

1kg pumpkin, deseeded, peeled, cut into chunks Olive oil for drizzling Salt and pepper 1/2 C red or green curry paste 2C chicken stock 2 cans (400g) coconut milk 500g prawn cutlets, tails on Sliced red chilli Shredded spring onion ■ Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced). Line a roasting pan with baking paper.

■ Arrange pumpkin in the roasting pan, drizzle with oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden and tender.

■ Remove pumpkin from oven and transfer into a large saucepan.

Add curry paste (and a bit of oil if it’s a little dry). Cook over a medium heat, stirring, for 1-2

minutes until fragrant.

■ Pour in stock and coconut milk, and then bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

■ Remove from heat. Blend until smooth with a hand-held stick whizz or in a food processor.

■ Return to the heat. Add prawns and cook, stirring for 2-3 minutes until the prawns are just

cooked.

■ Serve hot, garnished with sliced red chilli and shredded spring onion.

■ Tip: To store cut pumpkin, wrap it tightly in cling wrap and keep it in the fridge.

The advertising watchdog has upheld yet another complaint over a Wicked Campers slogan, slamming “Kill or be killed” for promoting “violent behaviour”.

It appeared in a cartoon on a Wicked Camper van showed a woman holding a gun next to a skeleton.

The complainant said the slogan promoted an irresponsible message, particularly in light of recent gun violence, and the Advertising Standards Authority upheld the complaint.

This was the 14th complaint against the company upheld since 2015.

The complaints board agreed the image of the gun, in combination with the slogan “Kill or be Killed”, suggested violence and breached three rules in the Code of Ethics.

“It had not been prepared with a due sense of social responsibility to consumers and to society and was likely to cause serious or widespread offence.”

Hall said the company had embraced Alibaba founder and executive chairman Jack Ma’s vision of new retail.

“We’re filming video content live in New Zealand and streaming it to Chinese shoppers,” he said.

“You can look at e-commerce channels as a really low-cost way to get your product to market in terms – there are low barriers to entry selling on e-commerce but selling through Alibaba and what’s reasonably unique it is a great opportunity to manage our brand story through various forms of digital marketing.”

More than 50 per cent of Smartfoods revenue comes from exports.

Kiwi food producer Smartfoods has signed a $4.5 million sourcing deal with Alibaba to supply it with Vogel’s cereal to be sold to consumers in China.

Alibaba will sell the product through its various e-commerce channels including through popular online marketplace Tmall over the next 12 months.

Smartfoods has been selling in China for six years, originally through Taobao.

Company managing director Justin Hall said the sourcing deal would further increase the brand’s growth and presence in China.

“Partnering with Alibaba and Tmall will provide some enormous benefits for Smartfoods.

Chinese consumers are interested in healthy imported foods and are buying more of their food online than ever before,” Hall said.

“Working more closely with Alibaba will assure consumers of both greater accessibility to our products and an enhanced shopping experience.

Fly the flag in support of our nurses I

t’s easy to take the work people in the health care industry do for granted.

We assume that if we get sick, someone will be there to care for us.

We know the system isn’t perfect and that elective surgery will often mean either no surgery or years languishing on a waiting list, but we also assume that in times of urgent need the care we require will be there.

And it is, but at what cost?

Currently New Zealand’s nurses, midwives and care assistants are asking the public to support them as they battle the government for better funding for the health sector.

For years there’s been a yawning gap between the money available and the need on the ground.

That gap is now a massive chasm and it’s getting deeper and wider.

The problem is not peculiar to cities, it’s felt in every hospital of every size across New Zealand and it’s being felt in Ashburton.

Yesterday health workers rallied on the Ashburton chessboard to highlight their cause.

They’re hoping by holding dozens of rallies around the country the government might finally sit up and take notice.

If there’s no action or reaction

then they’ll take the one step they don’t want to take, they’ll go on strike.

And withdrawing their labour won’t be easy for the thousands of people who make their living caring for others. But they’re desperate.

They’ve been talking for years and no one has listened.

Talk to any nurse and they’ll tell you that overwork and burnout are endemic in their industry.

People in their sector are bound together by their desire and their training to care for others and they’ll go to extraordinary lengths to do what they’re trained for and are committed to doing.

The government has taken advantage of that for years, banking on nurses and care workers to go the extra mile, to pick up the

Finally those nurses and care workers have bitten back.

They’re fed up with watching their workmates drop out of their industry because they’re burned out, they’re fed up with working 12-hour shifts to fill roster shortfalls and most of all they’re fed up with working in an environment where they know patient safety is compromised by short staffing.

If something doesn’t change, if health boards are not better funded, if nurses are not better paid, if conditions within the sector do not improve, God help New Zealand.

We pride ourselves on our status as an affluent First World country. When it comes to health

care, that’s a joke.

Yes, if you can afford to go down the private path you can buy what you need, but for the vast majority of Kiwis who access health care through the public system, we’re being sold short.

The facts are simple – there’s not enough money being directed into health, the pay rates and conditions are not sufficient to attract and retain nurses, overworked nurses are walking away from the profession, young nurses are heading overseas and the average age of the profession is rising.

All of that equals two simple facts – patients are being placed at risk, staff can no longer cope and that equals a health care industry in crisis.

Without a good public health care system we have nothing.

What will Budget 2018 hold? In the words of the current, world’s leading political guru, the deep-thinking, President of the United States of America, “We shall have to wait and see”.

hat age-old political ritual is upon us once again; in a mere 12 days – and a corresponding number of sleeps – finance Minister, Labour’s, the Honourable Grant Robertson – first finance minister to represent that party for 10 years – will, with suitable solemnity, rise to his still youngish feet to deliver the details of this hallowed document to all us quivering Kiwis – and to billions of others round the world listening into, even viewing, this ancient ceremony on any one – or more – of the myriad of electronic devices available for purpose on such significant occasions.

For Robertson – when wearing his marginally less illustrious hat, as the Member of Parliament for the electorate of Wellington Central – it will be a day to remember. He is the master of the nation’s finances albeit, also, the representative of one of the weakest-looking administrations ever to grace the treasury benches.

In fact, many of us owlish gurus – of the society for whom I am proud to be a card-carrying member – wonder, perhaps a trifle lugubriously, whether Robertson will be around this time next year to comment on the longer-term effects of his 2018 efforts to procure financial fairness for those of us who live here

and plot a path for the economic security of the nation for the next several years.

In the word of our time, it is an “awesome” task for the fortysix year-old from Dunedin via Palmerston North. Will he be up to the challenge?

In the frequently-used – if seriously unoriginal – words of the current, world’s leading political guru, the deep-thinking, President of the United States of America, “We shall have to wait and see”.

As to what the minister will actually say, you can be sure there will be a series of brickbats aimed at his National predecessors, in particular, the now former MPs, Bill English and Steven Joyce, the first of whom had his hand on the financial tiller for an extended period of what seemed at the time to be a lengthy span of stability and strength.

Joyce will no doubt disabuse me of such opinions and tell me and others that National’s handling of the economy during

those years was a long-running disaster and he, as the immediate inheritor of this chaos, is the one chosen to sort it out.

As he has already said, “You don’t correct the failings of nine years in a single budget”, a fairly strong indication of the predictable line he is going to adopt.

Despite the many the platitudes and cliches Robertson will trot out – all part of this parliamentary rite of passage – it will nevertheless be interesting to hear how he proposes to finance the many expensive projects with which Labour has promised to bring succour to the sick – including “unmouldy” hospitals – housing to the homeless, public transport to those who prefer not to spend the greater part of their lives stationary on an Auckland motorway, schools – and teachers to staff them – to the young people of this land, and free first year university education to the graduates of these centres of learning.

To those not in immediate need of life-saving treatment, Robertson would like to have offered cheaper doctors’ visits.

It seems, however, that that is a hope too far and such reductions to the cost of doctors’ visits will have to be “phased in” rather than announced with a flourish on the 17th.

trackings” will there have to be to Labour’s “money-no-object” schemes as Robertson is, unavoidably, brought face-to-face with financial reality?

Once the minister has sat down, to a burst of almost manic applause from his colleagues and amid cries of “Good on ya, Grant”, “Great Speech”, and other plaudits of that ilk, the stonyfaced and silent National opposition will look to their finance representative, the graceful Amy Adams to speak on their behalf and, in the process, instantly, to rubbish almost everything Robertson has just said.

She will pick holes, criticise and find endless fault with what has been outlined by her opposite number, even though she would not have been in a position to prepare such a speech.

That is the legendary pattern of Budget Day proceedings and it seems unlikely that anything more constructive will emerge on Thursday week.

After it’s all over, some, no doubt, will make a bee-line for the bar while others will go home wondering.

Be assured, the democratic process in Aotearoa, New Zealand is in fine fettle, more than can be said of less fortunate countries round the world.

We need to guard and guarantee it.

New face on The Crown Helena Bonham Carter will be taking on the role of a middle-aged Princess Margaret in The Crown. She’s been the subject of speculation for months, since the makers of The Crown announced it was axing its entire cast for season three and replacing them with older actors.

The veteran actress, 51, will join Olivia Colman in the third and fourth seasons, as the pair play the royal sisters. Helena takes the role from Vanessa Kirby, who has played the notoriously carefree princess in the Netflix show for its first two seasons.

Molten lava fountains Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted yesterday, sending lava shooting into the air in a residential neighbourhood and prompting mandatory evacuation orders for nearby homes.

Hawaii County said steam and lava poured out of a crack in Leilani Estates, which is near the town of Pahoa on the Big Island.

Footage shown on local television showed lava spurting into the sky from a crack in a road.

Aerial drone footage showed a line of lava snaking through a forest.

Lava fountains were shooting 46 metres in the air, and molten lava spread out over an area about 183 metres wide behind one house in Leilani

Estates, Big Island resident Ikaika Marzo told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser .

“It sounds like a jet engine.

It’s going hard,” he said.

County, state and federal officials had been warning residents all week that they should be prepared to evacuate, as an eruption would give little warning.

The county has ordered evacuations for all of Leilani Estates, which according to the 2010 US Census has a population of 1500.

Nearby community centres have opened for shelter.

Ranson Yoneda, the recreation director for the Pahoa District Park, was readying the gymnasium for any evacuees after it was selected as a Red Cross evacuation centre.

He said so far, about 15 people have arrived, some with animals, and they are hungry for information.

“They just want to know what’s going on because they were told it’s a mandatory evacuation,” he said by telephone.

The US Geological Survey said new ground cracks were reported yesterday.

Hot vapour emerged from a crack and spattering lava began to erupt.

Scientists said areas downslope of the erupting vent were at risk of being covered by lava.

Leilani Estates appeared to be at greatest risk, but scientists said new vents and outbreaks could occur and it’s not possible to say where.

The eruption comes after days of earthquakes rattled the area’s Puna district.

A nearby school was closed due to the ongoing seismic activity and several roadways cracked under the strain of the constant temblors.

The Puu Oo crater floor began to collapse on Monday, triggering a series of earthquakes and pushing the lava into new underground chambers.

The collapse caused magma to push more than 16 kilometres downslope toward the populated southeast coastline of the island.

Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency closed the area to visitors and ordered private tour companies to stop taking people into the region.

Deathbed marriage challenged in court A live-in houskeeper tried to marry a millionaire on his deathbed in a bid to keep his fortune, a British court heard.

She then changed the locks on his home after his death to keep it from his children.

Bok Soon Song, 72, is at the

centre of a court battle over the estate of John Williams.

She claims she was more than his carer, and insisted they were a loving couple.

But Central London County Court heard 66-year-old Williams died intestate – without

making a valid will – and so his fortune would normally be split between his three children, Deborah John-Woodruffe and her brothers, David and Andrew Williams.

After his death from bowel cancer in 2016, Bok changed

the locks on his home and began a claim to over £500,000 from his £1m-plus fortune.

John-Woodruffe, however, claims Bok was nothing more than a “live-in housekeeper” who took advantage of her dying dad.

‘We’re not enemies’ Rihanna isn’t friends with Drake anymore.

The 30-year-old R&B star has admitted her friendship with the God’s Plan hitmaker ended after he declared his undying love for her in front of the whole world while presenting her with the Vanguard prize at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2016. When asked about the status of her relationship with Drake now, she replied: “We don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies either. It is what it is.”

New show for Matafeo Rose Matafeo’s Horndog, the follow up to last year’s widely acclaimed Sassy Best Friend, is a high energy hour of jokes and stories. Despite only being in her mid-20s, Matafeo has been in the comedy game for a decade already, and was last year named as a comedian to watch by the Guardian. Matafeo’s charm is evidenced by the fact that, despite her acclaim, international success and obvious drive, she wholly manages to convince the audience to buy into the idea she’s still the same 12-year-old dork who brought a leather briefcase to school every day and couldn’t figure out why boys didn’t like her.

AshColl the improvers Ashburton College A shooter, Hayley Tallentire, looks to feed her midcourt players in their loss to Methven on Thursday night.

The status quo continued on Thursday night at the EA Networks Centre in Mid Canterbury senior netball.

The four teams who started the round unbeaten remained that way by the end of the night, as the race for promotion and relegation really heats up with just two more games in the first round of the season.

As it currently sits, Premier 2 sides Celtic B and Mt Somers look likely to advance their way into Premier 1, while Southern and Ashburton College A will likely be left to fight it out for the right to stay in the top division as they both still search for their first wins of the season.

At the other end of the spectrum both Celtic A and Methven ensured they weren’t going anywhere with winning performances.

Celtic were too slick, but perhaps not as slick as they would have liked against a determined United side, winning 34-21.

At the end of the day a result is a result though, and it will put the defending champions in a good head space for a top of the table clash with Methven next Thursday night.

The Methven ladies had to fight hard for their victory too, with Ashburton College showing their continued improvement once again, picking up a valuable bonus point for losing by less than three goals in their 29-27 loss.

The AshColl girls had their opponents on the rope at the midway stage of the match, leading by two goals at halftime, through some efficient work towards the circle and

a strong presence on defence, but the experience shoulders in the Methven side were able to regather themselves and work back into the match and keep their unbeaten streak intact.

In Thursday night’s other Premier 1 match, Hampstead proved too strong for Southern, winning 33-22 in an entertaining clash.

That should see Hampstead safe from the relegation zone with key match-ups next week likely to determine who potentially could face the chop the following week.

Ashburton College A and Southern will battle it out next Thursday night with Hampstead and United squaring off in the third match.

In Premier 2, Mt Somers kept their goal

average per game at the 50 mark with a 5014 win over Celtic C. The new girls to the competition will face their toughest test next week when they take on the also unbeaten Celtic B, in a match which will determine who is most likely to advance into Premier 1.

With no promotion and relegation match in this round, the opportunity to achieve their goal in the first stage of the season will be strong motivation for the Mt Somers side.

Celtic B also had a big win, dominating the AshColl B side 48-15 in a polished performance.

Meanwhile Rakaia got their first win of the season when they beat Southern B 3018.

Jostle on for positions If the form books are to be believed, the majority of Mid Canterbury rugby teams should enjoy fruitful days on the paddock this afternoon in the Combined Country Rugby competition.

As things start to really heat up in the race to the playoffs, with just a month’s worth of play remaining before the knockout stage is reached, points on the board today are going to act as the perfect stepping stones for higher honours for a good portion of the five Mid Canterbury sides.

Both Hampstead and Methven can probably start to look at building momentum towards the Watters Cup, with their chances of reaching the top stage of the Combined Competition nonexistent.

Methven will host Hurunui in a match under the mountain this afternoon, and Andy Pearce’s men get the best opportunity to get things back on track after a few lean weeks on the paddock.

There’s been a lot of promise in the way Methven have played, but the execution at times has floundered and this afternoon is the perfect time to try and put everything together at once.

Hampstead’s season isn’t getting aNY easier, but they will be hoping for a big turnout of supporters in their clash with Saracens.

Saracens have proven to be giant killers on more than one occasions this season, including ending the unbeaten run of the

Female player dies Italian rugby has been rocked by the death of 18 year-old player Rebecca Braglia, who passed away after suffering a neck injury sustained in a match last Sunday. Braglia apparently injured the back of her neck when her head hit the ground during a tackle while playing for her club, Amatori Parma. The young player was then airlifted to hospital in Cesana, where her condition deteriorated. Italian rugby’s governing body, the FIR, confirmed that Braglia had died.

After stretching their resources

to the max over the hectic Anzac week, last year’s runners-up will be looking forward to welcoming back some key names to their run-on side today.

Southern have the luxury of enjoying the opening of duck shooting with the bye, meaning a weekend which traditionally would see them struggling for numbers, isn’t an issue this season.

World’s oldest player Getting too old for rugby? Tell that to 95-year-old Scottish rugby legend Easton Roy. Roy is thought to be the world’s oldest rugby player, having just laced his boots once more to commemorate his birthday – ten years after officially hanging them up at the age of 85.

But the 95-year-old made a return to the rugby field in a charity match featuring club legends and current players.

Australian rugby clinging by a precarious thread

T

oday the situation in Australian rugby is hopeful.

If the Waratahs lose to the Blues, however, the situation will suddenly be hopeless.

Properly, truly, pack up and go home hopeless.

Australian rugby will become the sort of thing to keep an eye out for in car boot sales: its only value being nostalgic, its only interested buyers the old time tragics who can remember the days when the Reds and Brumbies used to scare other teams with the talent at their disposal.

It really will be that bad.

The thread to which Australian rugby is clinging will snap and their place in the Super Rugby universe should be seen as tenuous.

No one should assume that Australia should be granted their wish of keeping four teams in a revamped tournament from 2021.

The Waratahs are Australia’s best Super Rugby team, the Blues are New Zealand’s worst and have headed to Sydney with essentially a rag-tag bunch of rookies and provincial journeymen with no

idea – none, zip, zero – how to stay united in the face of sustained pressure.

The Blues are in such a state that it is likely they don’t always score when they are unopposed at training and once the Waratahs have located the ground and are safely out of the bus, that will be 80 per cent of the battle won right there.

The Blues are a broken, bumbling mess and if the Waratahs don’t win, can’t win, then when will this 37-match losing streak for Australian teams against New Zealand opposition end?

It was fun at first, back in 2016 when the streak began. A bit of Aussie-bashing always warms the soul.

It started to feel a bit awkward at the end of last year when a whole season passed without an Australian win and if the sequence isn’t broken this weekend then it will be time for New Zealand Rugby to genuinely question whether they want any attachment to a vessel that is clearly sinking without a trace.

NZR will no doubt brush off a Waratahs defeat, should it come, as nothing more than an exten-

sion of a bad patch for Australia, one that the old foe will work through soon enough.

But three wins in three years is not a bad run so much as confirmation that rugby in Australia has set course for oblivion and intends to be in a thousand pieces by the time it arrives.

The question won’t be why give them four Super Rugby teams but why give them any at all?

A solitary Bledisloe victory over a half-strength All Blacks side last year can’t paper over the cracks of a sport in freefall across the Tasman.

The Wallabies were thumped

by England and twice destroyed

by Scotland last year and their coach, Michael Cheika, fluctuates between tactical mastermind and over-tired small child blaming anyone and everyone but himself and players for the Wallabies’ mounting losses.

They aren’t a bad team the Wallabies, it’s just they only prove that about one game in every five.

Which is maybe not surprising given the chaos around them.

The Australian Rugby Union is permanently rummaging down the back of the couch for cash

and have no rainy day fund to bail them out.

This week one of their most senior and best educated Wallabies dressed up as a cow and disgraced himself and captain Michael Hooper failed to make any reassuring noises about being interested in the five-year, one million dollars a season deal he has reportedly been offered.

Then there is the whole Israel Folau business where he has managed to alienate vast tracts of the population, drag rugby back to the dark ages and still avoid any official reprimand, solving the mystery of whether player or executive holds the power across the Tasman.

NZR chief executive Steve Tew said in early 2016, before the losing streak began: “If we want to play professional rugby, we can’t just play ourselves – we will go out of business very quickly.

“We can’t just play Australia, because the same will apply, it will just take a little bit longer to get there.”

But with a strategic paper in front of them about the future of Super Rugby, NZR can’t ignore what is staring them in the face –

which is, that allowing Australia to retain four teams in Super Rugby is maybe not wise.

NZR’s generosity might have to end.

They have, after all, killed their own provincial competition in the last 20 years to allow Australia to build theirs.

They have fairly shared the millions in Super Rugby TV revenue even though the Kiwi teams are the ones which have the vast majority of the audience and they indulged the ARU when they wanted to put a team in Melbourne and then in Perth.

To go suddenly cold on Australian rugby may seem like a radical departure from the current thinking, but maybe not so much as NZR appear hell-bent on making Super Rugby a procession of games between New Zealand teams and they have played a significant role in marketing the competition to perpetuate the growing sense that the only thing that really matters are local derbies.

This idea that New Zealand needs Australia is missing one detail ... which is the words like a hole in the head.

Warriors chasing a Dragon

By DaviD Skipwith The Warriors are hoping to lure home former club junior and St George Illawarra impact forward Leeson Ah Mau for next season.

The Auckland-born frontrower or lock is off-contract and the Dragons are keen to re-sign him but face serious competition with several other clubs also interested including the Knights, Titans, Panthers and Warriors.

With uncertainty over whether former Warriors captain and 284 game veteran Simon Mannering will play on next year into a 14th season, the club could have a spot in the starting pack they need to fill.

The Herald understands the Warriors also made enquiries earlier this year about signing Canberra, Queensland and former Kangaroos forward Josh Papali’i, but Ah Mau appears to be their priority.

Warriors general manager of football Brian Smith confirmed coach Stephen Kearney had recently spoken to Ah Mau, however the club is yet to table a formal offer.

“We have got some interest but that’s about all I can say at this point,” said Smith.

“Steve has quite a good relationship with Leeson and we’re certainly interested and know that he’s off-contract.

“We have had some discussions with his agent but that’s where things are at the moment.

Fonua keeping locks

The Warriors playing roster for next season is almost full but they have space for one more player, although Ah Mau won’t come cheaply.

The Dragons presented a new contract to Ah Mau last month but they may struggle to match rival offers with his asking price believed to be around $500,000 a season.

Talk is strong that Ah Mau would like to be closer to family in Queensland, but he and wife, Rose, also have family in Auckland, and a return home is not out of the question if the Warriors could make a competitive offer.

The issue of the club’s owner-

ship is believed to have delayed negotiations but with that matter now resolved the Warriors are expected to advance talks in the coming days.

The 28-year-old debuted and played two games for the Warriors in 2009 and has played another 160 matches after joining the Dragons in 2012 following two years at the Cowboys.

The Papatoetoe and Otahuhu junior has been outstanding off the bench for the competition leaders this season, adding plenty of thrust and aggression as a replacement for starting props Paul Vaughan and James Graham.

“He’s really improved in the last couple of seasons,” said Smith.

“He’s really tightened his game

up and he’s a player to be reckoned with these days, that’s for sure.”

Smith confirmed the Warriors are tight on money having recruited heavily last year in signing the likes of Tohu Harris, Adam Blair, Blake Green, Peta Hiku and Gerard Beale.

“That’s going to be the very, very limit of activity for us this year because we’ve got a full book almost already for next year,” said Smith.

“I don’t see it as a negative.

“With the strong influx of players that came into the club from last season it’s a bit much to expect your salary cap to be free of too much cash.

Suli back in limelight Manly’s reserve grade players say they have been nothing but impressed by young centre Moses Suli during his time with them before his first NRL game for the club.

Suli will turn out in the centres for the Sea Eagles tomorrow against the Sydney Roosters, after he was upgraded to Manly’s full-time roster this week. It capped off a remarkable four-month run for the 19-year-old, who has gone from being one of the highest paid youngsters at the Wests Tigers before he was sacked by two clubs over the summer.

e do a lot of good things in Mid Canterbury when it comes to sport, but unfortunately self-promotion isn’t one of them.

And it’s always the annual Mid Canterbury Sports Awards that brings it to attention.

The awards, which have been running for a number of years, should be one of the highlights of the sporting year – and while for some it is exactly that, it’s hard not to imagine what it could be if we had the buy-in from a lot more sporting codes in this district.

This year’s nominations were, for lack of a better word, woeful.

Across the board, with the exception of maybe one category – the Junior Sportsperson of the Year, the lists are barren, with just a couple of names here and there and far too many categories only receiving one nomination.

So, what’s the go Mid Canterbury? We are a proud sporting district with an incredible record

on the bigger stages, but are we too proud to seek out recognition from our peers?

The phone lines here in this office would suggest not.

But nominations for the awards would suggest so.

Weekly we will have a number of conversations with sporting organisations about how the media doesn’t give their field the exposure it deserves, or that we treat the minority sports with disdain and disinterest.

Yet here’s a perfect vehicle to gain some of that so richly desired publicity and exposure, yet only a few are taking the opportunity to utilise it.

This year’s awards have nominations from swimming, shooting, athletics, cross country, basketball, rowing, croquet, girls’ rugby, bowls, tennis, karate, equestrian, cycling, rugby league and hockey.

That’s a good comprehensive list, but where are the likes of rugby, football, squash, waterskiing, indoor bowls, golf and cricket – just to name a few?

We should be able to each year sit down and look at the nominations and have every sport played in this district involved in some way or another, whether it be coaches, participants, administrators and volunteers.

Of those sports listed as not holding nominations, I believe I could name at least one nomination that should have been submitted from each and in most cases there would be more than one.

Those sports feature national champions, New Zealand representatives, tournament winners as well as representative individuals.

Some would have actually pushed for higher honours in

some of the categories too.

While those individual titles and team titles are important and the lack of buy-in from around the district is disappointing, probably the most disappointing aspect is the volunteer awards.

A category that is not judged, it’s open to any sport to put forward someone who goes above and beyond the call of duty for their sport.

Sports who, without that person’s services, would struggle to operate.

They are guaranteed recognition – a moment in which an organisation can say thanks.

This year there are six deserving names put forward, but they come from just two sporting organisations.

We need to be better at this or the future of the Sports Awards looks pretty grim.

Perhaps it’s time to stand up straight, puff the chest out a bit and take a bit of pride in what we are actually doing in the space of a sporting year.

Fuming Canterbury coach Dean Pay may soon get even angrier with the NRL set to review his scathing criticism of officials after a controversial 22-20 loss to Brisbane. Pay blasted a number of calls but was most livid about a “ridiculous” 79th-minute decision to sin bin No.1 Moses Mbye for a professional foul, gifting Brisbane the match-winning penalty. Win comes at a cost Technically, the dreaded hook didn’t come out for Jack Bird. But the maligned half still looks set to miss game time along with boom prop Payne Haas after Brisbane’s 22-20 win over Canterbury. Origin star Bird slipped and suffered a quad complaint while Haas (ankle) left Thursday night’s win at Suncorp in a moon boot. At first Bird appeared to have been unceremoniously benched by Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett when he came off the field with the match on the line after another quiet game at halfback, but Bennett insisted it was injury.

La Fille En Jeu chases treble La Fille En Jeu will bid to join hallowed company when she contests today’s Listed Daphne Bannan Memorial Great Easter Stakes (1400m) at Riccarton.

The Mettre En Jeu six-year-old mare is shooting for her third straight stakes win, a feat Wanganui trainer Nigel Auret has achieved just once before – with champion two-year-old Pompeii Pearl more than 30 years ago.

Pompeii Pearl won the Listed Manawatu Futurity (1100m) at Awapuni before adding the Gr.2 Sovereign Lodge (now the Wakefield) Stakes (1200m) at Trentham and the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Awapuni in 1988 before she was sold to American interests.

La Fille En Jeu has won the Gr.3 South Island Breeders Stakes (1600m) and the Listed Easter Cup (1600m) at Riccarton in her last two outings.

“But I was worried about the track for her first race down there [run on a slow 7 track] as well and she won that.”

On tactics, Auret said little was likely to change with the freegoer.

“There’s a bit more speed in this race, but if something wants to take her on, we’ll see what happens. Plenty of horses have tried to take her on in the past and many of them have finished last.

“It might cost our mare, but it will cost them more.”

Auret said Saturday’s race would be the last of La Fille En Jeu’s campaign, with Hastings features likely to beckon her in the spring.

Langer and that line

J

ustin Langer, a cricketer renowned for mental fortitude, appears a sound choice to coach the Australian side after its plummet into a dysfunctional nadir on the South African tour.

To some, the 47-year-old’s appointment might seem disconcerting, given Cricket Australia continues to conduct a review of the team culture following a ball tampering scandal which saw former test captain Steve Smith, and opening batsmen David Warner and Cameron Bancroft banned.

The 105-test veteran’s opening statements suggested leadership was to the fore.

Ultimately that pre-requisite falls to new skipper Tim Paine, but having a resolute coach as standard-bearer could help.

Langer spoke about: - “Respect being worth more than all the gold in the world.”

- “Being good citizens and good Australians.”

- “Modify[ing] our behaviour a bit so that it’s not angry or not over-aggressive.”

Hear, hear.

Those steady one-liners were offered with oratory’s version of a high front elbow, as if the former opener was building an innings against the media attack.

However, he wafted at to one verbal half-volley which might raise concerns in the CA pavilion.

Langer described an incident in his career where sledging got personal and “crossed the line”.

Whoa, Justin.

Please be careful invoking “the line” to demarcate appropriate and inappropriate on-field chat.

We’ve heard too much about this nebulous, cliched stripe which conveniently comes into play like a wobbly popping crease every time banter turns sour on a cricket field.

Langer gave the example of Ramnaresh Sarwan insulting Glenn McGrath’s cancer-stricken wife in a 2003 test in Antigua.

“That was a very sensitive time for Pigeon [McGrath],” Langer said. “But it [the sledge] probably

crossed the line and there were consequences for that.”

Certainly Sarwan was out of order during what must have been a difficult period for McGrath, whose wife Jane died five years later.

However, McGrath had instigated the incident, didn’t like the response, then reacted.

Langer’s team can’t have it both ways. They’re on notice in the eyes of the world game.

“We’ve always played hard,” Langer said as insurance.

“I think some of the best banter’s among each other to try to get the opposition thinking about other things, but that mental toughness is about being

100 per cent focused on the next ball.

“We all know what the accepted behaviours are. There’s a difference between competitiveness and aggression and we’ve got to be careful with that.”

No doubt about that, Justin, given the behaviour of some Australian alpha-male bullies in recent years.

Langer incites “banter”, as he prefers to call it, at his peril, especially among a group who have proven they struggle to recognise when it morphs into abuse.

What he also needs to remember in his new role is if you sledge, forget about dictating the position of the line.

Nick Willis’ gold medal deadline looming A period of 107 days sit between Nick Willis having a chance at becoming a 2008 Olympic gold medallist, or settling for silver forever.

Asbel Kiprop, the Kenyan who beat him in the 1500m at the Beijing Games, has confirmed he recently failed an out-of-competition doping test for a banned substance.

The 28-year-old alleges officials who collected his drug test extorted money from him and tainted his urine sample.

If Kiprop’s claims prove false, any ban is only likely to backdate a couple of years, but it would raise a question: how long had he doped?

That prompts a step back to the Willis scenario.

Kiprop was promoted to Olympic gold in 2008 after a positive doping test saw original winner Rashid Ramzi disqualified the following year.

Add in the fact the World AntiDoping Agency revised its code in 2015 to extend the statute of limitations for retesting from eight to 10 years.

“The last time I had an injection was in 2014 when I was given a yellow fever vaccination before travelling to Bahamas for a competition.”

Kiprop’s failed test deals another blow to Kenya’s middle and longdistance running reputation. Doz-

ens of his compatriots have tested positive for an array of banned substances in recent years.

Willis described any potential upgrade to a gold medal as a “moot point”.

The 35-year-old said that having already endured the Ramzi saga, he preferred to reflect on the joy taken from an elite running career spanning most of this century.

However, he said it was “very important” justice was served for any doping violations.

“The public and fans have every right to assume a high percentage of everyone is on it [banned substances].

“I don’t judge anyone for casting doubt on anyone in races, including me, because that’s how poor our sport has done the job at keeping clean.

“That’s the most frustrating part.

“The most important thing is for them not to be afraid to bring down the biggest names, if and when they cheat.

“They’ve got to be prepared to take a blow to the image of the sport – not that it could be any lower – so it can be rebuilt.”

Ben

Ben needs a quiet home, one where he can adjust to home life at a calm pace as he scares easily to loud noises. He is a very affectionate wee man who needs the TLC of someone special and understanding to his needs for quiet living. He is microchipped and will be desexed at MCAS expense, and comes with food and litter to get him started in his new home.

We are looking for new, like-minded people to come onboard with us here at MCAS. Our AGM is scheduled for June, and we are looking for new faces with fresh ideas for the new financial year. At our annual AGM a committee is appointed to oversee the running of the Animal Shelter.

We meet every one to two months for an hour to discuss ideas and approve plans. If you would like to help animals in need within our community come join MCAS. For further details on how to join, email mcas@outlook.co.nz

Winter

Winter is a young lady looking for a home where her new family will be happy for her to be an indoor cat, outdoor under supervision only, as she is deaf. Winter can be a real character, and naughty at times too, she loves to jump up for a cuddle without warning. Winter is microchipped and desexed, and will be homed with food and litter to help her settle in to her new home.
