Over the past year, tourists have pumped up the Ashburton District’s economy to the tune of $154 million. The spend is measured in electronic card transactions and is $1.5 million up on the previous year, and growing, says tourism leader Experience Mid Canterbury chief executive Bruce Moffat. While the way in which tourism income is measured has changed to a month-by-month predictive system, the numbers spoke for themselves and
achieving an increased spend for the year to March 31 was hugely rewarding, he said. “There’s been no real key point in the increase, but there was a slight rise in accommodation and greater spending on activities. “Looking ahead, things are looking really good,” Moffat said. The district’s regional status was now quite an advantage with tourists, some of whom were looking for experiences away from the most popular destinations such as Queenstown, he said.
Looking ahead, Moffat said the four key markets for Ashburton were domestic, then Australian tourists, followed by the United States and China. While it was too early to get a picture of the impact of the ski season on numbers, Moffat said people he’d spoken to in Methven were anticipating a strong season – weather willing.
