Ashburton’s future as a home for refugees could be squarely in the hands of Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel. At Thursday’s Ashburton District Council meeting Favel told councillors the district met all criteria as a refugee settlement town. “I’ve asked what the criteria is and
it’s about how the district is situated to cope with refugees. Because we’re close to Christchurch, have available jobs and houses and space in schools we could be considered,” she said. She asked councillors whether it was something they wanted to put their hand up for. The response surprised her. Some were against the idea, others were cautiously in favour and some
couldn’t decide. Russell Ellis wanted to know how much involvement the council would need to have if three or four refugee families settled in Ashburton.
