Dairy downturn forces rethink

The impact of the dairy downturn could result in a return to the traditional mixed cropping and grazing model on Mid Canterbury’s arable farms, an industry spokesperson says.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury grain and seed council chairwoman Joanne Burke said to date this season’s harvest had returned “fairly average results” notwithstanding the record yields a handful of farmers had achieved.

Feed grain prices have dropped and there was still a lot of carryover grain which failed to sell last winter, due to declining demand from dairy sector,” Ms Burke said.

Contract prices are back for all grains, pinching returns for arable farmers. Feed wheat is back to $304 per tonne and feed barley $293, down from $379 last season.

Australian feed wheat is landing in New Zealand at $350t and the international price of feed barley landed in Auckland is $316, Ms Burke said.

“We always track just under the import price because of the cost of getting it here.”

These trends were likely to be the “new normal” for the arable industry, and it was crunch time in terms of decision making, she said.

The grazing relationships forged between dairy and arable farmers over the past decade were also breaking down as a result of the dairy downturn.

In an effort to pare back onfarm costs dairy farmers have cut stock numbers and many plan to winter over on the milking platform, rather than send dry cows off farm.

“So far the focus has been on dairy but the arable sector has been highly impacted by the downturn in milk prices,” Ms Burke said.

“Graziers seem to have responded to the dairy downturn earlier – not as much winter feed was sown in the spring.

“It it’s crystal clear that we’ve got a changing market – the benefits for arable is that we are so versatile. We can shift our focus.”

Tourist drivers ‘a massive problem’ Motorcyclist suffers By sue NewMaN

The Ashburton District might not be a tourist mecca in its own right, but that doesn’t mean it escapes the scourge of tourist drivers creating mayhem on its roads says Ashburton Police senior sergeant Scott Banfield.

In a recent report to the Ashburton District Council, Mr Banfield described overseas visitors as a “massive problem” on the district’s roads.

currently running during the peak of the tourist season and that saw a Canterbury-wide upping of vigilance around road policing, Mr Banfield said.

The number of incidents identified by both road police and general staff was huge, he said.

“We’re writing a lot of traffic tickets and we do take the keys off some and ring the rental companies.”

Across New Zealand the police were working hard to deal

with issues around foreign drivers and there were a number of initiatives either in place or being introduced, he said.

These included working with rental companies on driver education, videos and tests that were run before tourists collected vehicles and increased road safety signage in facilities such as toilets.

“It’s a huge problem and you certainly cringe when you’re out on the highway,” Mr Banfield said.

spinal injuries in crash A man has been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital with suspected spinal injuries after his motorcycle collided with a car in Rakaia yesterday.

The crash occurred shortly before 4pm on State Highway One just south of the Rakaia Bridge.

Senior constable Aaron Tapp, who is based in Rakaia, said the 24-year-old Christchurch man had ridden into the back of a northbound car which had stopped in a queue of traffic near the corners of

Dunford and Bridge streets.

A rescue helicopter was used to transport the motorcyclist to hospital. The driver of the Peugeot station wagon involved in the collision was uninjured.

Fire fighters from Rakaia and Ashburton were called to assist, along with police and ambulance officers from Ashburton.

Both north and southbound traffic was re-routed around the crash scene for about 40 minutes, causing a significant backlog.

Helicopter called in to tackle weeds A helicopter has been plying the Ashburton River bed over the past few days, waging war on weeds.

With a lack of freshes and floods in the river over the summer gorse, broom and lupin and Environment Canterbury has undertaken the spray programme to ensure maximum flood capacity within the river.

The Ashburton River bed has been sprayed from the state highway one bridge downstream to the sea over the past week, and the section from the road bridge upstream to the north and south branch confluence was sprayed yesterday.

The river bed is sprayed by helicopter once every two years using glyphosate herbicide.

This has no specified withholding period.

An ECan spokesperson said

that water samples were sent to a laboratory for analysis to ensure glyphosate concentrations did not exceed safe levels.

Signs are also installed at river access points to discourage public access during spraying, and are removed after the spray is absorbed by the weeds.

A side benefit of the spray programme is that it keeps gravel beaches clear for rare indigenous river bird species to nest.

The clear area ensured the birds had good visibility to reduce the chance of attacks by predators.

Spraying takes place after their breeding season.

Similar programmes have also been completed for the Rakaia River, and are being planned for the Hinds Rivers over the next month.

A Cuban flavour added to this year’s celebration of children

The lilt of Carribean music replaced the solemnity of the organ yesterday when St Paul’s Church hosted Ashburton’s World Day of Prayer celebrations.

This year’s international service were written by the women of Cuba and used the theme and centred around a celebration of children.

World Day of Prayer is an ecumenical celebration that is prepared by a different country each year, and in Ashburton is hosted by a different church.

The event is hosted by more

than 170 countries Local organiser Iris OfficerHolmes oversaw the transformation of St Paul’s into a tiny slice of Cuba using flags, flowers and scarves, many in the national colours of Cuba, red, yellow and green.

The service started with a processional of women of different generations who shared their testimonies before placing symbolic items – a candle, bowl of fruit, maracas and a bag of sugar – on the altar.

Each enacted the role of a Cuban woman and related the story of their lives and their relationship with God.

Patching residence given new lease of life

When painter decorator Francis McClimont saw a small historic house on Short Street for sale, he instantly fell in love with it.

“It’s one out of the box,” he said this week.

His passion has kept him going as he renovates the 1909 villa, repainting, installing new plumbing and electrics, replacing decaying wood at a section of the rear, and highlighting the home’s unique features.

The home was built for Ashburton harness maker William Patching and his wife Sophia, who together raised 12 children.

Among those pleased to see the renovation under way, is Ashburton man Alex Clark. His grandmother Lucinda was Sophia Patching’s sister.

Mr Clark would often visit Winnie Patching in the house in the 1950s, sharing a cup of tea with her. Winnie was one of the Patchings’ youngest daughters. She was unmarried and owned the home after her parents passed away, and was later joined in living there by a widowed sister.

Mr Clark was pleased the house was being restored.

wife Melanie planned to initially rent out the property, which they purchased last year, before moving into it permanently with their three children.

The couple currently live in Christchurch.

February hot, dry and above all sunny If you thought February was hot, dry and sunny in the Ashburton District you were right.

When it came to sunshine hours, Niwa figures show that we not only broke our sunniest February record, we dismantled it, with a reading of 246 hours, 153 per cent above normal. This is our highest ever reading since records started in 1930.

Ashburton’s high sunshine hours were not limited to February, across the three summer months at 663 they were the fourth highest on record for the district, at 120 per cent above normal.

The hot, dry summer experienced across the district was mirrored on much of the east coast, South Island, resulting in drier than normal soils.

Poll shows current flag out in front A new poll on the flag shows the current flag has almost twice as much support as the alternative flag although support appears to have softened slightly.

The poll taken by UMR Research shows 59 per cent want to keep the current flag while 32 per cent want to change. About 9 per cent were still undecided.

The poll of 750 voters was taken in the last week of February, just before ballot papers were sent out on Thursday. UMR Research also does polling for the Labour Party.

In the last UMR poll in January, 65 per cent said they would vote for the current flag while 35 per cent would vote for change.

The issue appeared to be split along political party lines – National voters were evenly split on it with 45 per cent voting each way.

Almost three-quarters of Labour voters said they wanted to keep the current flag and 19 per cent favoured change.

Almost 90 per cent said they were almost certain or very likely to vote. More men than women favoured change – 36 per cent of men said they wanted change compared to 29 per cent of women.

UMR’s earlier poll in January showed a significant chunk of voters – one in five – wanted a change but were voting to keep the current flag because they did not like the design of the alternative.

About 80 per cent of that same group were also likely to see a vote against change as a way to “send a message to John Key”.

The poll of 750 voters was taken from February 25-29 and has a margin of error of +/- 3.6 per cent.

Mid Cantabrians keen to stay healthy are encouraged to head to the Arcade next week for a free blood pressure check. Hosted by the local Ashburton Kidney Society, blood pressure checks are one of the easiest ways to detect kidney failure. The free checks are offered to the public annually, in lieu of Kidney Awareness Week.

Last year people as young as 17 and well into the 90s stopped by, with 180 blood pressure checks administered in total. Any concerns about blood pressure that was too high resulted in people being referred to the GP. People keen on getting a check and contributing to the local kidney society can head to Redmonds (East Street entrance) on Thursday, March 10 from 9am until 3.30pm.

Model trains on show Train and horticulture enthusiasts alike will converge on Melcombe Street for the Garden Railway and Model Train Display today. A fundraiser for the Tinwald School Year 5 and 6 camp, the display will take place at 132 Melcombe Street from 10am to 4pm. A gold coin donation per child, $5 per family or $10 per adult there will also be a sausage sizzle and raffle tickets on site.

Red Cross appeal March is a special month for New Zealand Red Cross but this year it is even more important. Alongside its annual appeal, Red Cross’s Fiji Appeal is also open. All donations since February 20 to the Pacific Disaster Fund will be transferred to this appeal which is intended to support Fijian communities. Later this month, Red Cross volunteers will also take to the streets, asking for donations in exchange for a smile and sticker. This year Red Cross postcards can also be purchased, with funds going to the national appeal.

Chest injuries A man has been rescued from the Kaweka Range, in Hawke’s Bay, after suffering chest injuries when he fell from a tree. The 72-year-old, of Masterton, was putting up a tent fly when the accident happened near the Mangatainoka Hot Springs. He activated a personal locator beacon and the alarm was raised with the NZ Rescue Co-ordination Centre, who called on the help of the Hawke’s Bay Rescue Helicopter Trust to attend to the man. He was treated at the scene by a St John advanced paramedic and was later flown to a Hawke’s Bay Hospital.

Tully refuses to take stand Ashburton Work and Income shooting accused Russell John Tully has elected not to call any evidence or take the stand in his high-profile double-murder trial.

After 73 witnesses, the Crown concluded its case yesterday on day eight of the High Court trial in Christchurch.

Tully, who before yesterday had spent just four minutes inside the courtroom over the first seven days of the High Court trial in Christchurch after twice being ejected for outbursts before the jury, sat surrounded by prison guards and manacled to a chair, quietly listening to the Crown’s final witnesses.

When prosecutor Mark Zarifeh concluded the Crown case at 3.30pm, Justice Cameron Mander asked Tully if he wished to call any evidence or witnesses.

“Not without instructing legal counsel, your honour,” said Tully who is self-represented and assisted in court by amicus curiae, or friends of the court, lawyers Phil Shamy and James Rapley.

On Monday, Tully claimed his trial was “fixed” and that he needs a lawyer and disclosure.

Justice Mander told the jury yesterday that closing addresses will begin at 10am on Monday.

The judge’s summing up of the case will then follow that, most likely on Tuesday morning.

Tully, 49, denies being the masked gunman who killed two Work and Income workers, shot and injured a third, and shot at and missed a fourth employee on September 1, 2014.

Identification of the masked gunman is key to the trial, the jury has heard.

The Crown says evidence that the shooter is Tully is “overwhelming”.

Yesterday, Tully sat through hours of testimony from police officers explaining the chain of evidence process.

After each witness gave their evidence, Justice Mander gave Tully the opportunity to ask them questions under cross-examination.

He shook his head silently on most occasions.

However, Tully asked amicus Mr Shamy to ask questions on his behalf of witness, armed offenders squad (AOS) member Detective Brent Lyford.

Mr Lyford arrested Tully and told him his rights more than seven-and-a-half hours after the shooting.

Medically-qualified AOS members treated Tully for a dog bite injury to his leg at the scene, Mr Lyford recalled.

Tully was then taken to Ashburton police station in what he described as a “police paddywagon”. “[Tully] continually moaned and was dribbling on the floor of the van,” Mr Lyford said.

At one point there was silence in the van, he said.

When he turned around, Tully was looking directly at the police officer, the court heard.

“When I looked at him, he began moaning and dribbling again,” Mr Lyford said.

Mr Shamy was asked by Tully to put some questions to witness Mr Lyford in cross-examination, including whether police strip-

searched him during his arrest.

Mr Lyford said Tully was not strip-searched during his arrest.

Asked if a backpack found at the scene was searched during his arrest, Mr Lyford said that it would have been as it was “standard practice that things like that are searched at the scene”.

Tully has pleaded not guilty to

murdering Ashburton Work and Income receptionist Peggy Noble, 67, and case manager Susan Leigh Cleveland, 55, inside the Work and Income office on September 4, 2010.

He also denies attempting to murder two fellow workers Lindy Curtis and Kim Elizabeth Adams and other charges that include two counts of unlawful possession of firearms, and one of setting a man trap.

Despite extensive searches around the Ashburton river, the murder weapon has never been found, the court heard yesterday.

Detective Robert Kennedy said it was a “huge undertaking” to find the gun, but proved ultimately futile given the “thickness of terrain” in the area.

Community rallying for Fiji

Donations raised by an Ashburton preschool will be hand delivered to Fiji.

Jigsaw Preschool asked its family’s to bring in a gold coin donation to go towards repairing some of the devastation caused

by Cyclone Winston.

The idea received overwhelming response and over $1000 was raised.

Teacher Ana Kaunilagilagi is planning on travelling to Fiji later this month, and will take the donations with her.

Originally from Levuka, a town

on the eastern coast of the Fijian island of Ovalau Mrs Kaunilagilagi will spend two weeks with her family, helping the community repair the damage.

Mrs Kaunilagilagi came to New Zealand in 2010 and spent time in Auckland. So taken by the country, she decided to come back in 2012 and work as an early childhood teacher.

With plenty of experience up her sleeve – she was an early childhood teacher in Fiji for six years before moving into primary and tertiary teaching – she is loving life.

“Early childhood teaching is

my heart, I love it,” she said.

In a couple of weeks Miss Kaunilagilagi will return home and work alongside her community.

Her village was ravaged by the cyclone, with only three houses still standing.

“Most of the houses are ground zero,” she said.

“They have only one wall left, everything gone the roof is gone, one by one the walls went down.”

Not only did the devastation touch her village, but her family too.

Mrs Kaunilagilagi lost and aunt and a cousin.

“It’s just unbelievable,” she said.

However terrible the circumstances, Mrs Kaunilagilagi said the village has not yet lost its spirit.

The community is working together to rebuild what can be rebuilt, taking things one step at a time.

“It’s just amazing to see them working together, they have lost everything but it hasn’t wiped the smiles off their faces.”

Borough’s Unesco kids launch can appeal

Thousands of Fijian people are still without basic necessities following the devastation caused by Cyclone Winston and kids at Ashburton Borough School are determined to help.

The brainchild of the school’s Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) group, 11-year-old Blair Donaldson came up with the idea after wondering how the people affected

by Cyclone Winston were coping.

With the help of fellow Unesco members, Jadah Wilson, Danielle Stevenson and George Goods, he decided to approach Ashburton New World to ask for a donation of dented and damaged cans to send over to Fiji.

A couple of days later banana boxes full of cans arrived but the students decided to go one step further and ask their fellow classmates for help.

From peaches and apples to spaghetti and corn, cans began to arrive at a rapid rate.

Miss Wilson said she was very pleased with the support and thought the number of cans was “pretty cool”.

Yesterday the Unesco group packed up the cans, ready for them to be shipped off.

Rare footage has been captured of a blue whale nursing its calf in New Zealand waters. The National Geographic has released the video, recorded by a group of researchers working in the South Taranaki Bight early last month. The mammals were sighted by staff researching pygmy blue whales in the region. When they spotted what appeared to be a mother and her calf, they kept their distance and sent up a drone to record some footage and take photos.

National Geographic explorer and marine ecologist Leigh Torres said “it was beautiful to see”.

The footage is thought to be the first time the rare event has been captured on video.

Huge drug bust A $40 million shipment of methamphetamine has been stopped by Customs, leading to the arrest of four men and the seizure of millions of dollars in cash and cars. Around 40kg of methamphetamine was found hidden in a shipment of tea-tray tables sent from China. Four men have appeared in court on charges related to the importation and supply of the drug. A futher kilogram of methamphetamine was found at an Auckland address following the seizure.

Bomb hoaxer sought Police are still seeking a woman who made a hoax bomb threat from a Christchurch payphone on Thursday.

The call was made at 12.30pm by a woman from a phone on Colombo Street. The caller said a bomb was situated at a business premises.

But after police visited the location, a bomb was not found. Police are seeking a woman identified in CCTV images who was seen leaving the payphone used to make the call after it was placed.

The name of a man tragically killed while hunting with a friend on Thursday in Central Otago has been released by police. The 61-year-old Cromwell man was Gary John Tall who died while hunting on the Old Woman Range, near Cromwell. A mob of wild goats is causing chaos in a small South Island town.

A gang of 16 goats is destroying gardens and roaming the streets in Blackball, population 330, 29km northeast of Greymouth.

Grey District Council animal control Murray Malloch said the goats hide at night and then congregate to walk through town during the day.

“They just come through and wreck everyone’s garden,” Mr Malloch said.

“They eat it and then move on to another one. Everyone said they’re lovely goats though.”

He said he’s concerned the herd will cause a car crash after a near miss last

weekend. The goats are believed to have been around for a couple of years, but have been breeding and are now causing problems.

Mr Malloch said the goats have two weeks to be claimed before they’re “taken care of”.

“A local said he’ll go get them for meat, but we’re not sure if they’re someone’s pets,” he said.

“Either someone has to put their hand up or I’ll put it in the hands of a couple of local guys that are shooters.

If they come on to their properties they’ll eliminate them – they’ll shoot them.”

The fascinating subject of death

Death is just another part of life, but a fascinating part, says Ashburton Museum’s senior curator.

Maryann Cowan is preparing a display on funerals, to be subtitled A Part Of Life, opening at the museum next week.

Mrs Cowan said people were curious about the way people farewelled their dead and the exhibition had been organised following cases of family disputes around burial places in the news and changes to New Zealand’s Burial and Cremation Act. Mid Canterbury’s funeral history reflected that from around New Zealand and there would be a number of items on display. They would include mannequins wearing clothing typical of those worn to a funeral in the early 20th century and casket accessories and part of a coffin loaned by local funeral director Roger Paterson.

There would be newspaper stories on early funerals, including that of Ashburton’s 13th mayor Henry Davis. Mr Davis was mayor from 1903 to 1915, passing away in 1917 at the age of 61 after he injured his leg and did not recover from surgery to amputate the limb.

procession, which would have moved slowly as pallbearers walked beside its cars and horses and carts, would have seen many take their hats off in respect as it passed them.

This differs from funeral processions today, where sometimes cars will even cut in between vehicles following the hearse. And the clothing worn at funerals today is also different.

Not only is it less formal, but dark colours were not always the order of the day. Funerals were more personal too, evident in songs chosen and items decorating coffins.

Former Prime Minister Sir Robert Muldoon’s rail pass is for sale on Trade Me. Touted as a piece of memorabilia “for the rail enthusiast who has everything”, the gold railway pass expired in 1987 and is personally signed and embossed with “Rt Hon Sir R Muldoon”.

The auction has a starting bid of $40 and includes a signed portrait of Sir Robert and a letter from his wife, Dame Thea Muldoon.

The seller, “desbookman”, promises the authenticity of the rail pass and is selling more historical memorabilia, including Henry Ford’s hair.

Sir Robert was Prime Minister between 1975 and 1984 and led the country in major changes to the economy. He died in 1992.

Free classes for first-time parents

First-time parents will now be able to access free parenting and pregnancy education classes through a new provider.

The news follows an announcement made late last year that stated one of the main providers of antenatal classes – the Ashburton Parents Centre – would have to begin charging for its classes after a funding cut. The Canter-

bury District Health Board funded the classes until January of this year, but changes to the Ministry of Health’s specifications around parenting and pregnancy education resulted in the CDHB working with a new provider – Plunket.

An announcement by the CDHB earlier this week confirmed Plunket would provide free antenatal classes throughout Canterbury as of March 1.

A spokeswoman for Plunket

confirmed yesterday classes in Ashburton were already up and running out of the Primary Birthing Unit, staffed by a child birth educator.

Running for six weeks at night, or two days over the weekend, they focus on reaching first-time parents, people living in remote areas, Maori, Pacific and Asian parents, parents under 24 years of age and people for whom English is not a first language.

The new contract places more emphasis on the importance of keeping healthy during pregnancy and supporting parents postpregnancy.

Plunket southern operations manager Sonya Marshall said Plunket was looking forward to offering families free parenting education at an earlier stage in their parenting journey.

lery, said Plunket’s involvement meant consistent services would be delivered close to home.

Ms Gullery said anyone booked into any existing Ashburton antenatal classes earlier this year would be contacted and advised about the location of classes.

Celebrating 50 years of friendship

Fifty years ago 75 women extended the hand of friendship to one another and Ashburton’s Wahine Club was born.

It’s a low-key organisation, but one of which its members are fiercely proud.

Nine have stayed the distance and today they’ll be leading the modern-day group as its 50th birthday is celebrated.

The organisation was established as an off-shoot of the Ashburton Savage Club by wives of members who wanted to be more than just anonymous faces who saw one another when their husbands’ organisation held a social event.

Gladys MacFarlane called the wives together, most of whom knew one another only as Mrs and received a huge outpouring of support for an organisation that would cater for women only and that would allow the women to meet and support one another.

One of those originals, Wendy Petrie, said that most of those early members did not work and many had young children.

Their lives were largely limited by family commitments and their interests to the organisations in which their husbands were involved. “Right from the start it was always Christian names only and that broke down any barriers immediately,” she said.

In an era where women were always referred to as Mrs, calling an older and often well-respected woman by her Christian name was a pretty uncomfortable thing, said another of the founding members Winsome Wear.

The group started with 75 members, all wives of Savage Club members and it was formed both as a friendship group and as a group that would provide itself with home-grown entertainment.

“We weren’t all musical, but most of us had young children and at that time there was nothing else for us to join.

“It was about entertainment, but it was about caring too. If someone has a problem there’s al-

ways one of us who will give you a hand,” Winsome said.

The group meets weekly to rehearse – sketches, dances, musical numbers – and monthly to perform. Mostly those performances are for one another, but members do invite guests occasionally to enjoy the entertainment.

Committee members are charged with coming up with the ideas for each month’s performances and the objective is to involve every member at every meeting – on stage, as the star or in the back row or back stage. Taking part is not optional.

In the early days performances ran like clockwork, dance routines were precise and every note was

perfectly hit in the musical numbers.

Today they’re pretty relaxed, Winsome said.

“We’re not paid, so if you make a mistake it’s okay. We’ve even been known to walk off stage and start again. There’s no pressure to be a star; most of us are pretty ordinary really, pretty average.”

And performance standards are not the only thing that has relaxed with time. In the beginning the wahine club was a closed group that only Savage Club wives could join. Today it’s open to anyone.

With shows staged every month of the year over a 50-year span, the club has amassed a wardrobe of costumes that would rival that

held by any major theatre company. Many of those garments were created out of dresses that had “shrunk” in members’ wardrobes.

Seams were unpicked and the fabric put to a new use.

In the organisation’s heyday there were several clubs around New Zealand and the Ashburton group paid regular visits to these on “raids”.

Now Christchurch has closed and those that remain have reshaped into more professional entertainment organisations.

Some of the early members went on to be regulars in public shows after the Ashburton Operatic Society was formed, but most were happy to keep their time on

stage to club level.

The group’s meetings might be about entertainment, but they’re also about food, with potluck suppers after hui and regular dinners.

In the past the group undertook fundraising to pay for trips to visit other Wahine groups, but the days of catering for weddings and large events, as well as raids on other clubs, have well gone, Wendy said.

The Wahine Club has stood the test of time and while its membership may not hit the highs of the past – at 35, and most of those being committed members – it is in good heart. And the turnout for today’s birthday celebrations is testimony to that, an almost full muster.

Mid Canterbury is doing its bit to help raise awareness for Shine, a national domestic abuse charity.

Safe Families co-ordinator Anna Arrowsmith is pioneering the movement to raise money for Shine’s national day of recognition – Friday, March 11 – otherwise known as Orange Friday.

Ms Arrowsmith is selling orange balloons for $5 a pop and everyone who purchases a balloon is guaranteed to go home with a prize.

From Lake House vouchers, to Tupperware, free movie rentals, crème eggs and drink bottles, there is a prize for everyone.

Panache Hair and Beauty on Beach Road is also chipping in to raise awareness for Shine, dying one lucky woman’s hair bright orange.

Manager Sam Urquhart said she saw the Orange Friday campaign advertised on television so suggested the business jump on board.

Kitted out with posters and a donation bucket she then decided to go one step further and dye someone’s hair orange.

The model has already been chosen and the colour transformation is set to go ahead on Friday, March 11.

Guardian Farming Out next Tuesday!

A touching video of a young man dancing with his “nanny” has gone viral and moved people to tears.

The video, posted by Jarryd Stoneman, has been shared more than 4700 times on Facebook since being posted Thursday morning.

He captioned the video, “Asked nanny for a dance she can’t remember much but she still knows how to move”.

The two dance together to the song 7 Years by Lukas Graham, and at one point he kisses his grandmother on the cheek and the top of her head.

He tells his nanny: “Can’t walk, but can dance”, as she smiles broadly.

The video has moved people to tears, and comments are calling it “beautiful” and “the cutest thing I’ve ever seen”.

Commenting on the video, Benita Burland said: “That was too beautiful for words. Literally bawling my eyes out. Thank you Jarryd for taking such great care of our most precious Taonga.”

Found: One long-lost dad After 32 years, Clive Stevens-Clark has been reunited with his long-lost dad. It was a reunion the whole country got to see on TV3’s Lost and Found on Thursday night. Erin Tasker reports.

live Stevens-Clark could never understand why his father left when he was just three years old.

He and his brother Daniel never heard from him again. They had no idea what he looked like, all they had was a name. Barrie Clark. They didn’t even know his middle name.

Now a father of six, with another on the way, Ashburton man Clive can’t fathom how a father could go 32 years without seeing or speaking to his children.

To him, family is everything.

So when his own family suffered the trauma of losing a child – three-year-old Benjamin died suddenly two years ago today from a heart condition – it not only broke his heart, it also got him thinking about the father he didn’t know.

Suddenly, he wanted to see him again more than anything. He wanted to know who he was, what he did and why he disappeared from his life.

So Clive contacted the producers of TV3’s Lost and Found – a programme fronted by David Lomas, who delves into people’s pasts and tries to fix broken families.

He didn’t hear anything back for about three months, until one day he was in a meeting at work – Rainer Irrigation – and his phone rang. It was David Lomas.

David then visited Clive’s home to find out more about the boys who were seeking their long-lost dad and set about finding him.

He soon found him. Barrie was living in Griffith, a town in New South Wales, Australia, where he’d moved to 25 years ago.

When David questioned why he’d left, Barrie told him he’d been told by the boys’ mum to leave, so he did. The reason why he’d never written or sent a birthday card?

He couldn’t read or write.

He’d never stopped thinking about his boys and Clive said he had tried to look for them in the years after he left, but they’d moved so Barrie didn’t know

where to look. Then he moved to Australia.

Clive was born in Lower Hutt, but the family moved to Dunedin when Clive was two and his mum was pregnant with Daniel. The couple separated when Daniel was one.

“When mum told him to leave, he did and he took it literally,” he said.

“It’s been 32 years, and (finding his dad) happened because of a tragedy. If we hadn’t lost Benjamin I probably wouldn’t have done it.”

Losing a child was every parent’s worst memory and Clive remembers the day like it was yesterday.

“I wanted to get it done for Benjamin’s sake because I wanted to know where the heart condition had come from, which side of the family,” he said.

“But there is no answer, it just seems to be a fluke.”

The loss of Benjamin is a chapter in what has been a book full of adverse events for Clive.

He said he and Daniel were known as the poor kids at their Dunedin school and their homelife was made less than ideal thanks to their stepfather. So one day, Clive took himself to Child, Youth and Family. Daniel soon followed.

“I said to Daniel, this is not us, we have got to get ahead.”

Clive was put with a carer, before going out on his own and taking on an engineering apprenticeship.

He had two children with a former partner, but the relationship ended and Clive became a solo dad.

“After watching that programme, dad admitted he made the wrong choice. To be honest, when I chucked in my engineering job in Dunedin to take custody of my oldest two kids I didn’t even think about it. They needed me,” he said.

“The thing I don’t understand is, you need a licence to drive, or to have a gun, but you don’t need

a licence to have kids.

“I just can’t see my life without my kids.”

He never saw himself having a lot of kids though; two would have been nice.

But then he met his current wife Monique through a Buy, Sell and Exchange. He’d bought it to look for someone for his neighbour who had been alone for a few years. But instead, he found Monique.

She lived in Christchurch, so that’s where he eventually went.

But after the earthquakes, the couple moved to Ashburton and have made a home for themselves here.

On February 1, 2014, Clive and Monique married after seven years together.

A month later, Benjamin died.

It’s a loss they’ll never truly get over, but it made Clive move to find his own dad. He wanted to know if he was dead or alive, and where he’d been all this time.

It was Labour weekend last year that he saw his dad for the first time in 32 years. David had found him and flown the brothers

to Australia – after first sourcing them passports for their first ever trip out of New Zealand.

As Barrie walked towards them, Clive said he had no nerves.

He was pumped. And his first thoughts probably weren’t what you’d expect.

“I said to Dan, ‘geez, he’s a midget’.”

As they’d waited, Clive and Daniel had debated what they should do. Should they shake his hand? Should they hug him?

“I gave him a hug and it felt so good, God it felt good,” Clive said.

Clive immediately called him dad – after all, that’s what he is, even after all the time that’s passed. It’s an emotional reunion which played out for the country to see on Thursday night.

The couple’s children knew he’d met his dad, but didn’t know it was going to be on TV. Clive made them popcorn and told them they were going to watch a half-hour movie. It’s a half -hour movie he watched 11 times that night.

Now, they’re planning a family reunion in November. Barrie is

coming to New Zealand to meet the many grandchildren he’s only known about for a few short months.

Clive can’t wait. He’s now met his dad, spent some time with him and they’ve exchanged many phone calls. But Clive still has many unanswered questions.

He’s taking it day-by-day though. Now he’s found his dad, he’s got all the time in the world to get to know him and find the answers he’s been waiting 32 years for.

“Sometimes I wish he had bit the bullet a bit more and didn’t just sit back.”

But he knows his dad cares, and always did care, even if he wasn’t there.

He’s forever grateful to David for finding his missing piece.

“What you see on TV is him.

He’s a real character; down to earth,” Clive said.

“Kids and parents … I am sure if you’ve got $1 million or 20 cents to rub together, family is the most important thing in the world.

“You should know where you come from.”

New toilet block open Community facilities in Hinds just keep getting better, with the opening this week of a new public toilet block.

With the new facilities ready for use a very old toilet block that has served domain users for decades will go under the demolition hammer.

As part of the upgrade a new septic tank has also been installed in the domain and this will be shared with new facilities being built for the Hinds Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Southern Rugby Club.

Trenching for the sewer line is currently under way.

The work has been funded by the Ashburton District Council and the upgrade will also include a renewal of the domain’s water reticulation system because of long-standing problems associated with its water pipes leaking.

Late last year a new playground was opened in the domain and this was well used by the travelling public over the summer holiday period.

Speculation is mounting the kidnapped Thai woman who escaped from a moving car only to die the next day was targeted by an international Asian gang syndicate.

Bound and gagged Jindarat Prutsiriporn managed to jemmy open the boot of the late model car she was locked in and escape as the car travelled along Huia Road in Papatoetoe on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old mother survived the initial fall but died the following night in hospital.

Details have emerged of the victim’s links to the underworld which include a recent jail sentence for conspiring to import pseudoephedrine and a new methamphetamine-related case due before court next month.

Criminologist Greg Newbold said there were disturbing hallmarks that steered towards the botched kidnapping being ordered by an offshore gang boss in a mafia-style hit.

“If we’re dealing with organised Asian crime groups who have links with big groups in Asia, then certainly it’s possible.”

He said this became even more

plausible if Ms Prutsiriporn was negotiating a deal to give information in return for a reduction in her sentence or some sort of concession from police.

He said it meant police could be looking at a sinister form of crime at a higher and more organised level than previously seen.

“The fact that they’re prepared to go that far suggests this particular crime is quite sophisticated and looks like high level activity.”

Police Commissioner Mike Bush yesterday said officers were doing everything they could to find out what happened to Ms Prutsiriporn.

He said police were determined to find those responsible and bring them to account.

They were also making sure the dead woman’s family had all the support they needed at this tragic time.

“They have lost a mother and a daughter and we are working round the clock to find justice for her,” Mr Bush said.

He reassured the public they were in no danger and encouraged anyone with information to contact police.

The two traversed the high country to meet at the Trysting Stone for a cuppa and a chat. The Guardian’s Caitlin Porter perused material provided by museum archivist Kathleen Stringer and caught up with local history buff David Howden to find out more about the pair’s story.

ecked out in long, lace-up boots and with a gaggle of children in tow, Mary Rutherford set off from Mt Potts on a 20km jaunt for a cup of tea.

Over the way in Hakatere, Elizabeth Lambie was doing the exact same thing.

Department of Conservation documents on the history of Hakatere Station tell the story of how, in the 1860s, Mrs Lambie and her nearest female neighbour, Mrs Rutherford convened at the Trysting Stone by Lake Clearwater.

The pair, whose existence centred around child rearing, cooking and cleaning in tiny stone cottages, had to contend with bitter winters spent in total isolation – women were scarce in the high country.

Reports from another local resident at the time states she did not see another woman for the better part of 10 years.

Excerpts from the book of Mrs Rutherford and her husband James, a boundary keeper, called Where the Willows Weep by Margaret R. Fitts, talks of Mrs Rutherford’s frustration at being stuck inside the cottage.

“As the days passed, Mary found the surrounding scene more depressing,” the book read.

“There was nothing in sight

except matagouri scrub and manuka and even the matagouri repelled the touch with its spiteful prickles.”

Flax, reeds and toi-toi flourished around her small cottage, but there were no trees – just tussock and rocky hillside.

Her fate, the book reads, was no better than a prisoner in a “remote and stony penal settlement”.

An aeon since she had left Scotland, Mary thought of her friend Elizabeth “Liz” Lambie of the Hakatere/Mt Possession area before one day deciding to put an end to her loneliness and see her.

“Women were just as capable of tramping over tussocks as men,” the book read.

“She and Liz would meet again

… the next time the stores wagon came up from Mt Possession she would send a note to Liz with all the instructions.”

It was decided the pair would meet halfway, somewhere near Lake Camp or Lake Clearwater where they could “boil the billy”.

However, meeting up was no easy feat.

It was a journey of 12 miles for each of the women, but Mrs Rutherford was so excited she could barely wait.

On the day of the first rendezvous it is said she strapped baby Margaret to her back in a canvas pack so only the baby’s head was peeking out.

Waving out to the rest of her family she set out and before long

she was quickly approaching Lake Camp.

After hours of trekking, she spotted Liz hastening her way towards her and the two “embraced in delight” before Liz declared they were both “the original swag ladies”.

They vowed to repeat the journey regularly for as long as Mrs Rutherford remained at Mt Potts.

Avid history buff and chairman of the Hakatere Heritage Committee, David Howden has spent time researching the famed Trysting Stone.

Named because of the tendency to “share confidences”, the Trysting Stone was not a well-known landmark or a place of significance, it was merely a convenient

meeting place, he said.

Located between Lake Camp and Lake Clearwater, the large boulder can be seen protruding from a hill.

Upon entering the Lake Camp reserve, Mr Howden said the easiest way to locate the rock was to stop at the old cattle stop and head due north for 300m or so.

While many might think it would make sense for the two women to meet near a lake, Mr Howden pointed out that with children in tow, dressed in heavy garb and most likely unable to swim, rendezvousing by a lake does not hold the same attraction as it does today.

Instead, the boulder – surrounded by tussock and matagouri – was the perfect meeting place, it provided shelter and also had a couch-like slant to it, perfect for perching.

There is also an inscription on the rock, commemorating a young man who loved the back country and died of cancer.

In one of the old buildings at Hakatere, Mr Howden said women’s lace-up walking boots, along with a walking stick, not heavy enough to belong to a musterer, were found and were believed to have belonged to Mrs Lambie, adding weight to the historic tale.

Each age group produced an overall champion on finals day and in the big age group – the under-19s – the boys’ winner was Gareth Hunt, while Mad-

die Evans and Felicity Dalzell couldn’t be separated for the girls’ title. Alifeleti Hala and Georgina Kelly were the two under-19 runners-up.

For the under-16s, Matthew Clough and Keegan Gentle were tied for the top boy title, while Veronica Wall was the girls’ champion and Kate Donald was the runner-up.

For the under-15s, Brynmoor Workman was the top boy, and Taonga Mbambo and Reece Watson were tied for runner-up, while Amy Pearson was the top girl, followed by Emma Stagg.

Lochlan Deuart was the top under-14 boy, with Phoenix Andrew and Quinn Ritchie tied for runner-up, while Jade Peters was the girls’ cham-

Lake will be teeming

McLaughlin sets the pace at Clipsal

With the countdown to the pinnacle of New Zealand secondary schools’ rowing on, rowers from around the South Island will converge on Ashburton this weekend to fine tune their skills.

Lake Hood is hosting the Canterbury Junior Championships, with both club and school teams among the 570 crews set to compete over what’s likely to be a tough two days of racing.

Ashburton Rowing Club’s Justin Wall said crews were coming from as far afield as Dunedin and Blenheim to compete across the age grade action.

“It’s a last shakedown for a lot of the crews, to sort out their crews and combinations for Maadi,” Mr Wall said.

Maadi Cup is the prestigious pinnacle of New Zealand secondary schools rowing and it will take place at Lake Ruataniwha from March 4 to 10.

“By now people’s form should have consolidated and after Sunday everyone would have a good view on who the frontrunners are and how they are getting on,” Wall said.

Ashburton will have some top prospects in action this weekend, including Veronica Wall who’s likely to feature on the podium in the singles.

Mr Wall said the boys’ under-16 quad should also be up there, as should the novice double of Molly Gibson and Emma Stagg, who will then also team up with Lara Biggs and Kate Dolan, and coxswain Emma Jansen, to form a promising under-15 girls’ quad.

“All in all, I think we will all do pretty good,” Wall said.

An American rowing scout is also rumoured to be in town for the weekend to take in the action, so rowers will want to be on top of their game.

Mr Wall said three major regattas were being held around the country this weekend – involving a reported 2749 rowers – as the countdown to Maadi continued.

“We’ll be getting up close to 1000 here.

“Some of the big schools like Christ’s College, they have 90, so that’s a few sandwiches,” he said.

Heats will be held today, with the finals on tomorrow, and action will get under way at 7.30am both days.

Dyke thrilled to make Rio eight By caitlin Porter and erin tasKer Rowing New Zealand has announced its biggest team to be sent to an Olympic Games, and it includes a young Mid Canterbury rower bound for her first Games.

Emma Dyke has been named in the women’s eight for the Rio Olympics later this year; one of 31 athletes filling 33 seats across nine boat classes in a squad officially named yesterday following trials.

It is the first time New Zealand has sent away a women’s eight and men’s lightweight four. The men’s eight will attend the Games for the first time since 1984.

Dyke admitted she didn’t think the 2016 Olympics were on the cards for her but after being named in the women’s eight last year it began to look more like a realistic goal.

“It just feels like a normal campaign.

“It doesn’t really feel like I’m going to the Olympics but I’m so excited, it’s cool,” she said.

“I am happy now that it is actually happening.”

While Dyke basked in the news yesterday, as of Monday it’s straight back into training.

Dyke has a full-on schedule in the lead-up to Rio, heading away in early May and competing in a regatta later that month.

Then it’s on to Poland and finally, Rio. “It’s going to be fun,” she said.

Former Mid Cantabrian, and multiple world champion, Hamish Bond has also made another Olympics, named with long-time rowing partner Eric Murray in the men’s coxless pair, while his

younger brother Alistair has also been named in the men’s lightweight coxless fours.

A further 15 athletes were named in five boat classes to contest the regatta of death at

Lucerne, Switzerland in May. In significant changes to the 2015 crews: - Genevieve Behrent and Rebecca Scown take over in the women’s pair from world championship silver medallists Kerri Gowler and Grace Prendergast.

All four athletes are part of the eight.

- Emma Twigg will aim to qualify for an Olympic single sculls spot in Lucerne.

- Peter Taylor replaces Curtis Rapley in the lightweight men’s four.

The medal target for the team is five and the squad is headlined by 2012 London Olympic gold medallists Mahe Drysdale, along with the fearsome duo of Bond and Murray.

Bond and Murray remain an unrivalled pairing with six world championship titles to their names and are contesting their third and fourth Games respectively.

Five-time world champion Mahe Drysdale is attending his fourth Games.

Two-time world champions in the women’s lightweight double sculls, Julia Edward and Sophie MacKenzie are also confirmed, as are world champion double scullers Zoe Stevenson and Eve Macfarlane.

World championship bronze medallists Robbie Manson and Chris Harris will compete in the double sculls, with Rio the second Games for both.

As the mercury rises in Adelaide, Scott McLaughlin is the fastest man at the Clipsal 500 after the opening round of practice for the V8 Supercars season.

The Supercars are back in action for the first time after Mark Winterbottom claimed a maiden title in Sydney last December.

Yesterday morning, McLaughlin took his Volvo to the top of the time charts, ahead of last year’s Clipsal winner James Courtney and veteran Craig Lowndes in their Commodores.

In the session used largely for teams to tinker with their setups, Winterbottom was well off the pace in 20th.

Shane Van Gisbergen, on his Red Bull Racing debut, was fourth, with Rick Kelly steering his Nissan to fifth.

The talk of pit lane is not the racing but the scorching weather that drivers and everyone at the season-opening Clipsal 500 will endure over the weekend.

Adelaide is forecast to hit 39 degrees today and 38 on Sunday.

Van Gisbergen said even with the sport’s safety features, the temperatures would still make for a gruelling weekend.

“We have cool suits and helmet fans in the car so we’re prepared for everything but if one of those fails it will be a race ender,” he said. “(The cool suits pump) cold frozen water over your body so it does help but when it’s up to 60 degrees or more in the car it’s very hot.

“When you’re racing for more than an hour or two hours on Sunday, it’s not easy.”

Van Gisbergen said he was eager to get behind the Red Bull Racing Commodore and start racing after his off-season move.

“Everything feels good and looks good so hopefully it goes well,” he said.

James Cochrane might be one of the smaller players on the handball court, but he certainly makes an impact. Recently he and his New Zealand team-mates beat Australia for the first time, in the beach form of the game. Erin Tasker reports.

Making a big impact W

hen the New Zealand men’s handball team beat Australia for the first time recently, a former Ashburton man was there playing a big part in it.

James Cochrane is a valuable player on the beach handball court.

Any goal he scores is worth double points and defies his small stature by using his speed and agility to make an impact.

That speed and agility helped him to make his first New Zealand age grade side in 2007, after only taking up the sport a year earlier, followed by his first official New Zealand men’s side a couple of years later.

Recently his attention has turned to the beach form of the game.

James headed to Coolangatta in Australia with his Wellington Parrots club team for the Australian National Beach Handball Championships which featured 31 teams from around Australia and New Zealand.

While there, he got a lastminute call-up to the New Zealand team for the Oceania Beach Handball Championships, which were part of the world cup qualifying.

He’d originally missed selection but was approached by the selector while in Australia and ended up making the side for

both trans-Tasman tests.

“I take a lot of pride in wearing the silver fern so was extremely thankful for the opportunity,” he said.

New Zealand were underdogs heading into the two-test series but won the first game – the first time a New Zealand open men’s team had beaten an Australian men’s side in either indoor or beach handball.

“We played extremely well and really exploited the Australian defence with smart attack and strong technical play for our wingers.

“This was helped with a solid wall at our defensive end as well.”

The first win came via a shootout after the halves were shared, and then the second test went Australia’s way, as the home side took out both halves.

So despite scoring more goals all up, New Zealand missed out on the qualifying spot for the world cup in Hungary by a half.

The news wasn’t so good for Cochrane’s club side either, finishing seventh.

“We underperformed in a couple of critical games to move further up the draw.

“I think those of us involved in the New Zealand team were focused too much on the second test which probably hampered our performance,” he said.

“But we love playing together and have been working hard in Wellington targeting this tournament for the past five months. “ The club side won the national championships earlier in February, and Cochrane said it was great to go on to test themselves in Australia, in the outdoor, beach form of the game.

Beach handball is to handball, like beach volleyball is to volleyball, or sevens to rugby.

“It’s played on a smaller court, there’s four-a-side teams, and it’s played in two halves, with specialist players who are worth two points if they score.

Cochrane is a specialist.

“I enjoy both beach and indoor handball, but I personally prefer indoor as I am quite small for beach so I need to utilise my strengths in other ways.

“Speed and agility is a lot easier to harness on a hard indoor court as opposed to the soft sand, but I do like the free-flowing game of beach,” Cochrane said.

He plays the centre position in indoor handball, which is like a playmaker role.

“I guess you could compare it to a point guard in basketball.

“My job is to control the tempo of the game and co-ordinate the offence in order to create space for the back players (big strong

tall players) and create space for the wingers (fast quick agile players).”

It’s a sport which has given Cochrane a lot over the years, although he wasn’t so sure of it to begin with.

“I started playing handball in 2006. I got involved with it through my mate Ryan Roselli who I used to give grief to before I learnt about the sport.

“I used to think it was like four square – a better description would be waterpolo on land.

“He encouraged me to go to some trainings, which led to a tournament which led to age group trials and so on.”

Since then he’s made the under-21 national side, the men’s national team, and captained the national indoor team.

“It has provided some great opportunities for me and I have managed to travel with it to Sweden, Denmark, Tahiti and Australia.”

The level of handball in New Zealand was getting better and better, and the country’s national handball teams improved with every test they played, he said.

“Our last world cup qualifiers we lost to Australia by four in the first test, which is as close as we have got to beating them.

“Four goals is not a lot in handball as it generally means two turnovers, as you don’t score off

your attack and your competitor does.”

Making it to the Olympics is the ultimate goal, but qualifying is tough, Cochrane said.

“More likely it would be to qualify for the world championships.

“We have got close in the past but failed to get over the line.

“In order for us to do this we would need to win the Oceania qualification and then beat a nation from South America in order to qualify - much like the football path for the All Whites currently.

“This would be a massive ask for us, but in order for us to get better, we need to play more often at this level.”

For Cochrane personally, the goal is to keep developing his game, and growing as a player.

“I have always struggled with my height and strength, being small as it is, so playing smarter and turning my weaknesses into strengths is critical for me to be competitive. “ Coaching could also feature in his future.

“I was asked to help with the coaching in the women’s national beach team for the latest qualifiers in Coolangatta which I really enjoyed.

“So maybe coaching a bit further down the track, but I still love playing and will continue to do so for as long as I can.”

Friendly rivalry to the fore South Island Marist rugby supremacy goes on the line at the Celtic Rugby Club today.

The club is hosting the South Island Marist Rugby Tournament, the second year in a row it’s been held after a 20-year absence from the rugby calendar.

Organiser Richie McCrea said it was a day all about friendly rivalries and getting things right before the rugby season proper starts.

“It’s a chance for the Marist clubs to get together for a lot of friendship and playing some pre-season rugby and enjoying each other’s company, and not being too stressed about the result; we’re not playing for the Rugby World Cup,” he said.

McCalman back early

Milner-Skudder out of final re-match It’s too early in the season to talk about must-win game scenarios, but the match-up between last year’s two finalists in Dunedin tonight is looming as a crucial encounter made more difficult for both teams following the withdrawal of their All Black strike weapons.

Hurricanes fullback Nehe Milner-Skudder was yesterday ruled out of the match at Forsyth Barr Stadium due to a bruised leg suffered during his team’s hammering at the hands of the Brumbies in Canberra, with Highlanders wing Waisake Naholo already sidelined due to a leg fractured during his team’s loss against the Blues at Eden Park.

Both are key attackers, and while coach Chris Boyd will miss Milner-Skudder for probably only one match, Naholo is out for up to eight weeks after fracturing the same leg which left him under-done for the World Cup. The Hurricanes, thrashed 5210 by a very good Brumbies side, are likely to find the going extremely difficult against the defending champion Highlanders, who were pipped 33-31 by the Blues in round one, but much will depend on, one, how Jamie Joseph’s men react to their defeat in Auckland, and, two, how they cope with expectation levels which have gone to a new level following their grand final victory last year.

It’s one thing to fly under the radar every week - despite having such talented invididuals as Ben Smith, Aaron Smith, Malakai Fekitoa and Lima Sopoaga in your team - quite another when you are expected to win every match.

Rebels to use the boot The Melbourne Rebels plan to unleash their twin super-boots Jack Debreczeni and Reece Hodge as they chase an elusive first Super Rugby win in South Africa.

The Rebels are facing the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria on Sunday and hope their kickers can extend themselves at altitude.

Five-eighth Debreczeni has previously slotted a penalty from 50m out while rookie fullback Hodge is also a noted goalkicker.

The Bulls are expected to play a traditional style meaning they will also rely on their set-piece and kickers rather than running the ball.

Spedding summoned Centre Wesley Fofana and fullback Scott Spedding have been recalled

by France for the visit to Scotland in Six Nations rugby next week.

Fofana missed France’s previous three matches because of a rib injury, but returned to competition with his Clermont club over the weekend. Spedding, who also plays for Clermont, did not feature in last week’s 19-10 loss to Wales because of an injury. Toulouse’s Jean-Marc Doussain dropped out of the squad in the only other change by coach Guy Noves.

Lapasset steps down Bernard Lapasset will not be seeking re-election as chairman of rugby’s world governing body as he focuses on leading Paris’ bid to host the Olympic Games in 2024.

Lapasset, who is co-chairman of Paris’ bid committee, said “we are now entering into the heart of the campaign. I hope to have the honor of being part of a successful bid from my home country.”

Lapasset informed World Rugby on Thursday of his decision not to seek a third term. He said “rugby has never been healthier,” pointing to the sport’s return to the Olympic program and the growth of women’s rugby.

In brief First blood to Broncos Brisbane have their 2016 NRL campaign off to a winning start with a conservative 17-4 win over a Parramatta outfit, missing star recruit Kieran Foran, in Thursday night’s season opener. Broncos winger Corey Oates was a first-half star, scoring one try and setting up another as last year’s grand finalists cantered to a 14-4 lead at the break. Still, Parramatta kept turning up with impressive defence to restrict the Broncos to just a penalty goal and a field goal in the second half.

Future stars sign up in droves for new season With the Mid Canterbury rugby season fast approaching, the district’s youngest aspiring All Blacks and Black Ferns have been signing up to play in droves.

The district’s rugby clubs have

been holding muster days for their junior players – from under six through to under 14.5 – over the past week.

Among those heading along to Collegiate’s muster day on Thurs-

Although many players register online to play these days, the muster days are a chance for

players and their families to meet up, and get a taste for their chosen club.

Primary schools’ Rippa Rugby started this week, while the JAB season will start on April 2.

Taylor welcomes the heat

By Matt Encarnacion Both coaches are under the blowtorch, but Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor has welcomed the sort of heat forecast for today’s NRL clash with the Warriors.

With temperatures expected to nudge the late 30s at Campbelltown Stadium in south-west Sydney, Taylor yesterday ruled out requesting drinks breaks, believing his team could handle it better than their Auckland-based opponents.

“I just hope that it remains that way and we don’t get a late change, because I’d like to think that that’s going to play in our favour,” Taylor said.

“There’s a lot of work to be done before we get a result, based on how hot it is, and we haven’t talked about that as a team for a second. “(But) it’d be nice if it’s nice and hot for us.”

Both Taylor and Warriors counterpart Andrew McFadden are under pressure to find success early in 2016 after their teams’ poor seasons in 2015.

McFadden’s Warriors were bolstered by arguably the best

recruitment drive of the summer, netting stars Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Issac Luke in key positions, while wily veteran Jeff Robson and prop James Gavet were also good additions.

Still, Taylor insisted mercurial Warriors playmaker Shaun Johnson remained the key threat, one to be ne-

gated by shutting down his forward pack.

“For me, Shaun Johnson is still the number one danger, he’s so talented.

“And then having TuivasaSheck and Luke around him, it adds another dimension,” he said.

“But it’ll be what happens in the middle.

“Their forwards are strong and we need to hold them.

“If we don’t do that, then those guys on the edges will be too hard to handle.”

After a disastrous 2016 where the joint venture won just eight games and finished equal last, a winning start today would be a big fillip for Taylor.

But the former point-scoring wizard insisted he wasn’t concerned by the heat on his job.

“I just want the guys to play well,” he said.

“We want to win in round one,

and we’ll want to win in round two, and we’ll want to win in round three. “(Pressure is) just part of this game.”

The Tigers are without key men Robbie Farah (knee) and Luke Brooks (suspension) who have been replaced by Jack Littlejohn and Manaia Cherrington respectively.

For the Warriors, McFadden has named five new faces; Tuivasa-Sheck, Robson, Gavet, Luke and Blake Ayshford while Robson’s inclusion at halfback means Johnson moves to five-eighth.

The NRL’s reduced interchange has had an immediate impact on the new season, with Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett making just two unforced substitutes in the first half of his season opener. An injury to Jordan Kahu midway through the first half meant the supercoach had to burn an early interchange card in the opening 40 minutes.

An interested onlooker, South Sydney coach Michael Maguire said the impact was evident on an Eels unit that was forced to do plenty of defending early. “I saw at times throughout the game there, you’ve got a lot of your forwards that have got to stay out there longer,” Maguire said.

Soward shoulders load He had back surgery over the summer but Jamie Soward has no problems carrying Penrith’s NRL premiership hopes in 2016.

After a sub-par 2015 campaign that resulted in a heart-to-heart with club boss Phil Gould late last year, the onus is on the veteran five-eighth to drive the Panthers back into finals contention this season. And the early signs are encouraging for Penrith fans, with Soward participating in three straight trial matches. Williams gets the nod Picking Sam Williams to start at five-eighth over Blake Austin in today’s NRL season opener against Penrith was an easy decision for Canberra coach Ricky Stuart.

Austin hasn’t played a match since having major shoulder surgery in September and will make his return via the bench in the roundone clash at GIO Stadium. Stuart said it was a good way to reintroduce the Dally M five-eighth of the year to the NRL and monitor his minutes. “It won’t be forever, it’s just a matter of doing the best thing for the team,” he said yesterday.

Bellamy stays put Coach Craig Bellamy is hoping his Melbourne Storm contract extension will help persuade star halfback Cooper Cronk to follow suit.

Bellamy has signed up through to the end of 2018, his 16th season at the helm of the Storm. With Australian skipper Cameron Smith locked in through 2018 and champion fullback Billy Slater till the end of 2017, the Storm’s focus now is on retaining the offcontract Cronk, keeping together a quartet that has conjured so much success over 13 seasons.

Cantilena to bounce back Pace will make the race for the smart filly Cantilena at Wingatui today.

Trainer Lance Robinson believes a genuine tempo in the Listed NZB Airfreight Stakes will bring out the best in the daughter of Per Incanto, who was foiled by a stop-start affair in the Dunedin Guineas last time out.

“She missed the kick a bit and when she got up into a position they pulled up in front and she over-raced,” he said.

“She was on the back of the winner (Son Of Maher) when they put the brakes on and she was never able to get balanced and into a rhythm.

“The winner was too good on the day, but she could have finished a bit closer.”

Cantilena, who had previously posted a hat-trick of race victories at Ashburton, Riccarton and Motukarara, has come through that outing well and she will again be ridden by Samantha Wynne.

“She’s bucking and kicking and I’m sure she’ll go well,” Robinson said.

“She’s got an awkward draw, but as long as she begins well she’ll press forward.”

Hanrahan brought up the double century when Cullen Keefe led over the last 1600m.

He later won with Pocket Of Jewels and Bute Courage, both rated in front by May. Cullen Keefe and Bute Courage are raced by Sam and Nancy Taylor, of London, Ontario.

Hanrahan had won a double for the Taylors with Kid Galahad and Bute Courage at Waikouaiti in 2014.

Kid Galahad, who won seven races in New Zealand, was exported to Canada.

Hanrahan races Pocket Of Jewels with his wife, Justine and father, Laurence, who raced Highwood, winner of the $20,000 group two Dunedin Trotting Cup in 1988.

Highwood was driven by May

and raced in partnership with trainer Warren Stapleton.

Laurence jun had his other training treble when he won with Cruzem, Mister Gee D and Sir Lance at Winton in December, 2003.

Re-writing the record books

Fourteen-year-old Jaidyn Busch has had a stellar 2016, taking home titles and breaking records all over the show.

The athletics champion recently broke not one, but two records at Christchurch Girls High School.

Originally from Hinds, Busch is now Year 10 at CGHS and boards at Acland House.

At the school’s athletics day Busch broke both the under-15 shot put and under-15 discus records.

She cleared 12m in shot put, smashing the 10.61m record.

While she wasn’t sure of the former discus record Busch threw a personal best of 31.40m.

“I was really shocked, I was just really happy when I threw that far,” she said.

From there the next step was to perform well in the South Island secondary school championships and following that, nationals, Busch said.

Prior to smashing her school’s records, a few weeks ago she competed in the Canterbury senior championships in Timaru

Battle of the titans Tom Walsh has won the highly anticipated head-to-head battle with Jacko Gill and smashed his own New Zealand Resident record to win the shot put title at the Athletics National Championships in Dunedin yesterday. Walsh fired a massive 21.12m throw with his third attempt to claim a seventh successive national title. Both athletes will contest the Indoor World Championships in a fortnight.

Once again, Busch broke a record and claimed a personal best with a 12.88m shot put throw.

As well as that, on Waitangi weekend she was asked to compete in The Big Shot event in Christchurch.

Held in a gap-filler in downtown Christchurch at a make-shift post-earthquake venue, Busch

liaised with the likes of shot put superstars Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill.

It was not all fun and games, Busch won her shot put category.

“It was so cool ‘cos I got to meet Tom Walsh for the first time, that was exciting,” she said.

While not yet halfway through high school, Busch has her sights set on continuing with athletics

Tactix in town today

Netball enthusiasts are set to converge on the EA Networks Centre to see the Mainland Tactix in action.

Tactix pre-season training will step up a gear this weekend, with matches against netballing neighbours the Southern Steel set to fine tune their ANZ Championship preparations.

The new-look squad will meet the Steel at the EA Networks Centre today and tomorrow with the New Zealand Men’s team, Canterbury Men’s team and the Tactix and Steel national league teams also making an appearance.

Coach Sue Hawkins said she was excited to get the team out on court.

“Playing the Steel in Ashburton’s fantastic indoor stadium will be amazing,” she said.

All games played at the EA Networks Centre over the weekend will follow the new international rules which Hawkins said were critical for season build up.

A busy weekend for netball, the EA Net-

works Centre will also play host to the Netball Mainland Superclub competition which sees the top club teams from within the zone compete with one another for the top spot.

The preliminary matches will be played in Ashburton before finals will be held in Blenheim next weekend.

This morning a sold-out children’s coaching clinic will also run, prior to games commencing.

Following that the Tactix will play the Canterbury Men at 11am and the Steel will have their run on the court with the men’s team at 2pm.

The two rivals will then take the court together at 5pm.

Games will resume at 10am on Sunday with the Tactix and Steel facing off once again.

Tickets for the pre-season netball festival are available on the door, $5 for adults and a gold coin donation for school children.

Netball relationship ‘still strong’ The head of Netball Australia insists the organisation’s relationship with its New Zealand counterparts is “as strong as ever” despite plans to split the trans-Tasman league.

The 2016 ANZ Championship is set to be the last of its kind and the New Zealand and Australian teams are expected to compete in separate competitions from next year.

Talks of a split were instigated after Netball Australia forged ahead with plans to

increase the number of Australian teams in the league.

The increase in the number of Australian teams next year from five to eight will force a restructure of the competition and the likely new format will see the league split into two.

It is understood the favoured option would have the New Zealand and Australian teams compete domestically and the top sides meet in a play-off series at the end.

African-based Kiwi distance runner Zane Robertson believes the threat of Kenya being banned from the Olympics has already had an effect. The east African country risks being banned from the Rio Olympics, unless it proves it’s up to World Anti-Doping standards by the start of next month. Robertson says it’s easy to tell who is doping and who isn’t.

The outlook was lowered to creditwatch negative, which suggests a 50 per cent chance of a further downgrade within a 90day period.

The downgrade came after the company exercised a 30-day “grace period” from having to pay US$17.3 million in interest to the holders of its US$400 million of bonds, appointed restructure specialist Alan Carr to its board, and said it’s in talks with “representatives of certain of the noteholders”.

Fine weather boosts apple sizes Coastal sea breezes during the night have kept apples cool and sunny and warm temperatures in the mid to high 20s have also benefited the crop.

Good weather over the past month has further boosted the apple crop, Pipfruit NZ said.

After four weeks of perfect apple growing weather, the $700 million record crop is looking good in terms of fruit size, quality and flavour, Pipfruit NZ chief executive Alan Pollard said.

“Global demand is for bigger apples and over this past month New Zealand’s apples have been feeding off the perfect growing conditions with plenty of sunshine,” he said.

Beijing Weying Technology Co is taking a 2 per cent shareholding in Vista Group International as part of a deal that will see the pair set up a new venture to tap into China’s expanding film market and is expected to generate more than $30 million for the New Zealand cinema software provider in the first year. Under the terms of the deal, which are both confidential and conditional on regulatory approval, Vista will provide the new venture with the distribution rights to all of its existing software.

e have been recommending that investors display patience over the past few months and hold a higher than normal level of cash and fixed interest in portfolios while the uncertainties of monetary policy divergence and economic transition play out in financial markets.

Recent price action suggests market capitulation in some sectors has already occurred.

The yield on UCI Holdings’ junk bonds has soared to 89 per cent, a sign investors are worried about the risk of default by billionaire Graeme Hart’s autoparts business.

The US$400 million of February 2019 bonds, which have a coupon of 8.63 per cent, were sold during the 2011 leveraged buyouts by Hart’s Rank Group of UCI for US$980 million and another auto-parts business, FRAM Group, for US$950 million.

Holders of the debt include BlackRock, JP Morgan, Credit Suisse and Pimco, according to Reuters data.

Events calendar a key tool Sue Newman

T

he key to a successful outcome is good planning.

And while the organisers of the vast array of events held around the Ashburton District every year plan those events down to the last detail, most of them leave one key element out of that planning – checking for a clash with other events that are planned for the same day or weekend.

Take a year-long look at events around our district. The numbers run into hundreds, but the weekends on which they are held probably run into dozens. It’s either a feast or a famine and that means everyone is a loser.

Ashburton desperately needs an events calendar that becomes the community-planning bible, one that will ensure that every event has its chance to shine, has an opportunity to capture maximum exposure and attract maximum numbers of attendees.

Experience Mid Canterbury does run such a beast, but it’s totally reliant on event organisers checking for date clashes before they schedule an event and logging their own event on the board well in advance. Few do.

Take last weekend. There were two major bike races in the district, one on-road, one off-road, but it’s likely that some cyclists could have been interested in competing in both. They couldn’t.

This weekend there are straw bale conferences, antiques shows, wedding expos just for starters. Yes, not every event appeals to everyone, but in terms of accommodation for out-oftowners and business for cafes, bars and restaurants, the clash of events means massive pressure on our service infrastructure one weekend and starvation the next.

We have a handful of signature events that are held every year around the district and that should make it easy to avoid some clashes, but it appears that isn’t always the case. Swept along by the enthusiasm of the moment, it’s easy to forget that what you’re planning might run headlong into someone else’s plans.

The framework of an events calendar is already in place but the key is ensuring that everyone uses it.

Unfortunately the human factor plays against the calendar being an up-to-date and living document, but until this happens we’ll continue to be an all or nothing district when it comes to entertainment.

YOUR VIEW Positive warning [It was] encouraging to see a police officer using their flashing lights to warn approaching traffic they were travelling a bit fast on Thompsons Track Thursday morning without stopping and ticketing, perhaps its not all about revenue gathering or had the officer already made his weekly quota?

I bet that attitude goes a long way to warn drivers without the anti-police attitude.

Tully trial harrowing for all involved

T

he eyes of the nation have been fixed on Ashburton as details of the crime that shook the town like no other before it have been laid bare.

I am of course referring to the trial of double-murder accused John Tully, under way in the High Court in Christchurch.

Tully stands accused of murdering Work and Income workers Peggy Noble and Leigh Cleveland and attempting to murder their colleagues Kim Adams and Lindy Curtis.

I’ve spent the best part of the trial to date in the courtroom, listening to the gruesome details of events as they unfolded on that fateful September morning in 2014.

It was officially the first day of spring; a day which usually brings with it the promise of new life, a day we associate with daffodils and frolicking lambs, a day we put the long cold nights of winter behind us and look forward to summer evenings spent outdoors.

It was a Monday morning. People were settling into the working week. It was a day like any other.

Murder was not on anyone’s radar.

No-one, except the masked gunman who calmly walked into the Work and Income office at 9.51am and in 61 seconds destroyed the lives, hopes and dreams of two women.

The lives of their families, friends and colleagues were irreversibly changed by what Crown prosecutor Andrew McRae described in his opening address as a premeditated act of murder.

Witnesses, included the woman who was shot as she cowered beneath her desk, have been asked to recall their experiences in explicit detail.

Each and every one have held up to the pressure admirably.

The jury has also heard chilling details of the lead-up to the crime.

A man matching a description of the gunman was seen eating while seated on the East Street green minutes before the crime.

The Crown has alleged the same person purchased items from the New World supermarket and from a local pharmacy earlier in the morning.

We have learned of Tully’s predilection for breakfasting on Couplands bacon and egg pies and cream buns and how, on the morning in question, he left empty-handed having discovered the bakery was out of his favourite pie.

Work and Income managers and caseworkers also detailed his fraught relationship with the agency, painting a picture of a difficult and demanding character who holed up in the office for six hours on one occasion, talking to media outlets with his phone on speaker.

His behaviour eventually led

to him being trespassed from the Cass Street office.

We have heard of how he chose to sign documents with an ‘X’ and that he had stickers printed with the letters inX, which he used to label his possessions, including a shotgun cartridge found in the Work and Income office in the aftermath of the shootings.

The Crown case against Tully is compelling. In addition to eyewitness accounts, physical evidence and DNA material has been produced, linking the accused man to the crime scene.

However, by way of refusing to plead to the charges, he has in effect denied them.

The trial has been highly unusual in that Tully was absent from the courtroom for all but four minutes during the first seven days.

Up until yesterday he had made just two brief appearances. On the first occasion Justice Cameron Mander ordered his removal after just a minute, the second time he lasted for three minutes.

On both occasions he repeatedly interjected with claims of unjust treatment at the hands of the legal system. He repetitively accused Justice Mander of trialfixing and claimed to have been denied legal representation.

In fact, Tully has chosen to represent himself – an impossible task when not in court while evidence is presented.

In his absence he has been assisted by two amicus, or friends of the court, lawyers Phil Shamy and James Rapley.

While his absence has been a

departure from the customary procedure, it must have offered a small measure of comfort to those required to give evidence, in particular those who witnessed the shootings.

Yesterday Tully chose to obey Justice Mander’s request for silence and remained in court to hear evidence pertaining to his arrest.

He went so far as to co-operate with amicus James Rapley, directing him to ask questions of a police witness.

The trial will have been a particularly harrowing time for the families of the dead women, who have courageously maintained their vigil in upstairs gallery of the High Court throughout proceedings.

They are there to see justice done for the women who can no longer speak for themselves and in doing so have been forced to hear details of their loved ones’ final moments.

The trial will continue next week, when Justice Mander is expected to sum up the evidence.

Tully’s fate will then be determined by the jury of seven women and five men empanelled in his absence on the first day of the trial.

We can only hope it will finally bring some sense of closure for all involved. However, it is unlikely we will ever understand the motives of someone who made a conscious decision to end two lives, and according to the Crown, went into the office with the intention of killing as many Work and Income staff as possible.

Foos’ big reveal a joke After teasing fans with news of a major announcement, the Foo Fighters have unveiled their big news with a video on YouTube. The clip addresses recent rumours that the band is going to split and that frontman Dave Grohl is pursuing a solo career. Earlier yesterday, a video emerged of drummer Taylor Hawkins saying the band is on “indefinite hiatus”, however, the official announcement video reveals that’s not the case. The seven-minute clip features Grohl discussing a solo career. Meanwhile, the rest of the band sit down to discuss possible replacement singers, including Phil Collins, Billy Corgan and Justin Bieber, before former boy bander Nick Lachey joins the group for a singalong. The clip ends with the message: “For the millionth time, we’re not breaking up. And no one’s going f***ing solo!”

Madonna goes topless

‘Do not come to Europe’ – EU’s Tusk

Madonna has gone to extremes to promote her upcoming New Zealand shows: she’s posted a photo of herself posing topless with a horse. The pop megastar is currently in town ahead of two shows at Vector Arena tonight and tomorrow night, her first performances here in a career spanning four decades. The shows are yet to sell out, but her latest tweet is bound to cause attention.

In it, the Like a Virgin singer posted a photo on Twitter of herself posing raunchily in front of a horse, and tells fans to “Giddy up”. The snap, showcasing Madonna’s toned back, had one fan calling her the “queen of back muscles”. Around 170 crew are in town for Madonna’s shows, who will perform on a huge crucifix stage set up at the venue. She has a full band, 20 back-up dancers, and will perform 23 songs, according to some statistics recently released about the show.

European Council President Donald Tusk has warned illegal economic migrants against coming to Europe, during a new push to solve the EU migrant crisis.

He said illegal economic migrants were risking “lives and money” for nothing.

Mr Tusk visited Greece and Turkey yesterday to discuss ways to reduce the flow of migrants travelling west.

More than 25,000 migrants have been left stranded in Greece by a tightening of border controls to the north, raising fears of a humanitarian crisis.

Yesterday, a group of mi-

grants blocked a railway line on the Greek side of the border with Macedonia to protest at the restrictions.

They were imposed after several Balkan countries decided only to allow Syrian and Iraqi migrants across their frontiers. Austria also decided to limit numbers.

The move effectively barred passage to thousands of people seeking to reach western Europe, including Afghans as well as some more likely to be regarded as economic migrants.

After meeting Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Athens, Mr Tusk said he was ap-

pealing to “all potential illegal economic migrants”, wherever they may be from.

“Do not come to Europe,” he said. “Do not believe the smugglers. Do not risk your lives and your money. It is all for nothing.”

He also said EU member states must avoid taking unilateral action to deal with the migrant crisis.

Separately, UK Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Francois Hollande discussed security and migration issues in the French city of Amiens, including conditions at the French port of Calais, where thou-

sands of migrants hoping to enter the UK have been living rough.

After the talks Mr Hollande warned of “consequences” for management of migrants heading to Britain if the UK voted to leave the European Union in a June referendum.

Earlier, French Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron said his country could allow migrants to travel unchecked to the UK in the event of a socalled “Brexit”.

He told the Financial Times newspaper that an exit vote could end a bilateral deal allowing the UK to vet new arrivals on French territory. - AP

Kim Jong-un urges nuclear readiness North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has ordered his country’s nuclear weapons made ready for use at a moment’s notice, the country’s official state news agency reported yesterday.

Kim also said his country will ready its military so it is prepared to carry out preemptive attacks, calling the current situation very precarious, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

The threats in the statement are part of the authoritarian

nation’s regular propaganda effort to show strength in the face of what it sees as an effort by its enemies South Korea and the United States to overthrow its leaders; it follows harsh UN sanctions over the North’s recent nuclear test and long-range rocket launch and comes ahead of joint USSouth Korean war games this month that the North claims are invasion preparations.

North Korea has threatened nuclear war in the past, but it is unclear just how advanced

the country’s nuclear programme really is.

Pyongyang is thought to have a handful of crude atomic bombs, but there is considerable outside debate about whether it is technologically able to shrink a warhead and mount it on a missile.

“The only way for defending the sovereignty of our nation and its right to existence under the present extreme situation is to bolster up nuclear force both in quality and quantity,” the North’s dispatch

said, paraphrasing Kim Jong Un. It said that Kim stressed “the need to get the nuclear warheads deployed for national defense always on standby so as to be fired any moment.”

On Thursday, North Korea fired six short-range projectiles into the sea off its east coast, South Korean officials said, just hours after the UN Security Council approved the toughest sanctions on the North in two decades.

Pistorius appeal bid rejected South Africa’s highest court has dismissed Oscar Pistorius’ appeal of his murder conviction, a lawyer said yesterday, signalling that the former track star’s long legal battle since he killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp may be drawing to a close.

The ruling by the Constitutional Court clears the way for a judge to sentence the doubleamputee runner for murder at a hearing scheduled for April 18.

“We’ll proceed to the sentencing,” defence lawyer Andrew Fawcett said.

Pistorius, who killed Steenkamp in 2013, had appealed to the Constitutional Court, saying another court erred when it overturned a manslaughter conviction and declared the Olympic athlete guilty of murder.

Pistorius spent one year of a five-year sentence in jail for the

lesser offence. He is currently under house arrest, staying at his uncle’s mansion in Pretoria.

The minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years, though a judge can reduce that sentence for what the law describes as exceptional circumstances.

Pistorius shot Steenkamp through the door of a toilet cubicle in his home early on Valentine’s Day 2013. Prosecutors said he killed her after an argument; Pistorius said he killed her by mistake, thinking there was an intruder in the house.

Pistorius, a multiple Paralympic champion, became the first amputee to run at the Olympics and the able-bodied world championships. He was known as “Blade Runner” for his carbon-fiber running blades.

The Republican’s most recent presidential nominees, Mitt Romney and John McCain, lambasted current front-runner Donald Trump yesterday, calling him unfit for office and a danger for the nation, in an extraordinary show of intra-party chaos.

“His is not the temperament of a stable, thoughtful leader,” Romney declared. He called Trump “a phony” who is “playing the American public for suckers,” a man whose “imagination must not be married to real power.”

Hours later, Trump lashed back, calling Romney “a choke artist” who lost to Barack Obama four years ago only because he was such a poor candidate.

The vicious feud marked a near-unprecedented scenario pitting the Republican Party’s most prominent leaders, past and present, against each other as Democrats begin to unite around Hillary Clinton.

Underlying the clash is a bleak reality for panicking Republican officials: Beyond harsh words, there is little they see to stop Trump’s march toward the presidential nomination.

Party leaders are poring over complicated delegate math, outlining hazy scenarios for a contested national convention and even flirting with the idea of a third-party effort.

Romney confidant Ron Kaufman, a senior member of the Republican National Committee, openly embraced the possibility of a contested convention: “If that’s the only way to stop Trump, it makes sense,” he said.

Honduran indigenous leader Berta Caceres, who won the 2015 Goldman Environmental Prize for her role in fighting a dam project, was shot dead yesterday by multiple gunmen who broke into her home, authorities said.

Caceres, a 40-year-old Lenca Indian activist, had previously complained of receiving death threats from police, soldiers and local landowners because of her work.

Tomas Membreno, a member of her group, the Indian Council of People’s Organizations of Honduras, said at least two assailants broke into a home and shot Caceres to death early yesterday in the town of La Esperanza.

“Honduras has lost a brave and committed social activist,” Membreno said in a statement.

The killing appeared to be targeted: A Mexican rights activist at the house was only slightly wounded in the attack, but Caceres’s body had four gunshot wounds. Police said they had detained a suspect, but did not identify the person.

Caceres, a mother of four, led opposition to a proposed dam on the Gualcarque river, considered sacred by the Lencas. Many of the project’s backers have largely abandoned building plans.

President Juan Orlando Hernandez wrote in his Twitter account that “this act has caused mourning among all Hondurans.”

His chief of staff, Jorge Alcerro, said “the president has instructed all government security forces to use all means to find the killers”.
