Two people have died and another sustained serious injuries following a motor vehicle accident near Methven yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of the Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road and Waimarama Road after a serious crash between a car and a truck at around 11.15am.

The two people killed were travelling

in the car, while the truck driver was transported to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said fire crews from Methven and Alford Forest spent two hours cutting the man out of the truck after he had become heavily entrapped after the truck and trailer had come to a rest on its side.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said three ambulances and the Westpac

rescue helicopter attended the scene, which later transported the truck driver to hospital.

Large sections of State Highway 77 and State Highway 72 were closed for much of the afternoon.

Lost class time concerns Preece

More than 350 Year 9 students around the Ashburton District had an unexpected holiday yesterday as the first round of rolling strikes by secondary school teachers kicked off.

In support of their stalled negotiations over wages and conditions, secondary teachers across New Zealand have followed up last week’s strike action with a series of rostered home days for students that will see classes withdrawn one day each week for a set year group.

The rolling strikes started yesterday with Year 9 and will be followed with a Year 10 rostered home day next week.

Ashburton College principal Ross Preece is keeping his fingers crossed there will be some movement in the negotiations before the strike days start impacting on Year 11 to 13 students.

While he supports the teachers in their claims, Preece said he’s concerned at the loss of class time for senior students.

“We’re full of hope because that the ministry has said ‘we need to talk about this’ is helpful,” he said.

classrooms because there were growing numbers of higher needs students in schools, Preece said.

“Unfortunately what isn’t growing is teacher numbers.”

That there were only 11 trainee teachers currently with physics as a speciality demonstrated very

clearly the depth of the problem, he said.

The college employs two physics teachers and is one of more than 350 secondary schools in New Zealand, most of whom employ specialist physics teachers.

The college, like most schools

around New Zealand, was struggling to fill vacancies and was only able to ensure there was a teacher in front of each class through the good will of retired teachers making a temporary return to the classroom, Preece said.

“We have two or three now but

that’s not sustainable long term.

These are very capable teachers who are coming out of retirement to fill gaps and we’re very fortunate to find staff willing to do this.”

There was a large pool of teachers who had exited the profession, but for those who may want to re-enter after letting registration lapse there was little incentive, with six months retraining at a cost of around $6000 required, he said.

For teachers in the profession, the 10 per cent pay rise over three years on offer might address inflation, but it did nothing to address the 10-year lag where salaries had been almost stationary, Preece said.

“Even if they came up with a plan for the future, that would be something. Teachers don’t like being on strike because it’s impacting on their students, but there needs to be some sort of indication from the Government.”

The rostered home days are scheduled for June 11, Year 10, June 26, Year 11 and July 2, Year 12.

Marking 30 years of keeping district growing

Youth crime staying low

Addressing small issues early and taking a holistic approach to youth crime are some of the reasons Ashburton’s youth aid officer is happy to say youth crime is at a low point across the district.

Youth aid officer Rob Hooper said youth crime appears to be down across the board, despite small bubbles of offending popping up in rural areas.

“There has been a bit of rural activity around vehicles and opportunistic crime, but it is just about addressing that nice and early,” he said.

“There are dips and troughs and we appear to be at the lower end of a trough at the moment.”

Hooper said concerns around youth offending can start with school truancy and being out late at night, along with alcohol and solvent abuse.

“It is always a concern,” he said.

“We want to get on that prevention early and help out with those at risk.”

Hooper said the continued work with community organisations like Safer Ashburton were key to keeping the rates of youth offending down.

“It is about using those community groups to get the best outcome possible,” he said.

Social media has changed youth, Hooper said, but the tell-tale signs of a youth offender in the making had not changed.

“It is the same sort of stuff, not being at school, drinking and smoking that Adam has been doing since he was a kid,” he said. “It is about dealing with some of those challenges and the modern challenges as well.”

Hooper said they are starting to see the negative uses of social media show in youth offenders, using it for bullying.

“We want to see parents supporting their children, monitoring their behaviour and who they are hanging out with and if there are any issues utilising the supports that are available out there.”

When David Askin took up the job of superintendent of Ashburton’s parks and reserves it was something of a return home.

Askin was born in Geraldine and when the superintendent’s job came up with the Ashburton Borough Council, he decided it was time to move closer to his roots. That was 30 years ago and last week that long service was recognised by his employer the Ashburton District Council.

Over those years the shape of his job has changed, but what hasn’t is Askin’s absolute passion for growing things. If he’s not working alongside his staff caring for the dozens of parks, gardens and expansive domains around the district, he’s happily working in his own one-and-a-half acre garden.

Askin is also involved with the Trotts Garden Charitable Trust.

Today the number of parks and reserves in his patch has grown and the job itself has reshaped to include the district’s water races.

Askin completed his horticultural apprenticeship in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, before becoming superintendent of the Christchurch Airport gardens. He then moved to Invercargill’s Queens Park gardens for six years before heading for Cambridge and then finally Ashburton.

He admits that 30 years in one job with one council is a fairly long stint, but said he’s been well and truly pipped for the longest serving in his industry by Invercargill’s Robin Page who has just retired after 50 years. That’s a target Askin says he won’t be chasing.

During the past 30 years he has become the unofficial keeper of council newspaper clippings, filing every item written about the council as well as horticultural notes from other publications.

These are now in a series of scrapbooks at the Ashburton Museum.

His job may have changed over the years, but what hasn’t changed, he said, is his love of plants, trees and growing things.

Bus driver admits careless driving School bus driver Malcolm Gary Pluck, 79, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving causing injury following turning into the path of an oncoming car about 8am on May 2.

In the Ashburton District Court yesterday, the police summary of facts stated Pluck slowed the bus, with about 20 school children on board, with the intention of pulling into a driveway on Thompsons Track, which has an open road speed of 100 kilometres per hour, to uplift more children.

He had told police he did not see the oncoming car travelling in the opposite direction when he turned right, across the centre line.

The driver of the oncoming car, who had her toddler in a rear car seat, attempted to take evasive action but still collided head-on with the bus, sustaining a dislocated ankle and bone chips, bruised ribs, whiplash and a concussion.

She later developed pneumonia as a complication, requiring further hospital treatment.

“Thankfully no serious injuries were sustained by the pupils on the school bus or the victim’s daughter,” police said in the

Tessa Rose Kirdy, 21, returned 1086 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath following police stopping her on Moore Street on May 26.

“That’s a very high reading, and how you went through the thought process of having that much alcohol and getting behind the wheel, I can not understand,” Judge O’Brien said.

In normal circumstances Kirdy would be fined well over $1000, however Her Honour reduced this to take into account the expense of the alcohol interlock device she would now be subject to.

Kirdy was fined $500, ordered to pay court costs of $130, and disqualified from driving for 28 days, following which she was authorised to apply for an alcohol interlock licence, which should be in place for 12 months.

Following that the disqualification would continue until she applied for a zero alcohol licence which would have to remain in place for three years.

Stella Ann Bebbington, 43, was found to have an excess alcohol

level of 851 micrograms per litre when stopped at a breath alcohol checkpoint on Walnut Avenue on May 17.

Bebbington had been on the way home from a farewell party for a colleague at her workplace.

Due to the high level she will only be able to drive, after a 28day disqualification period, with an alcohol interlock licence.

She was also convicted and fined $400 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Te Aranga Hikurangi Manuhera-Hohaia, 20, pleaded guilty to driving with a breath alcohol level of 848 micrograms per litre of breath.

Police stopped Manuhera-Hohaia when he was driving the wrong way on St Asaph Street in Christchurch.

Judge O’Brien said it was his second excess breath alcohol charge in a short space of time.

Noting she could not rule for an alcohol interlock device due to the defendant not owning a vehicle, she fined him $820, ordered him to pay court costs of $130, disqualified him from driving for eight months and sentenced him to 60 hours community work.

Julie Zarifeh said it has taken up to now for her to believe a double tragedy which befell her family in 2017 really happened.

The Christchurch clinical psychologist will talk alongside fellow motivational speaker Jake Bailey at the Cancer Society Ashburton’s Wellbeing and Resilience Presentation tomorrow at 5.30pm at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Zarifeh lost her 27-year-old son Sam, who drowned in a West Coast river after falling from a raft, two weeks after losing her 60-year-old husband Paul to pancreatic cancer.

Sharing her gruelling personal story in public talks, such as the one this Thursday evening, is something Zarifeh is becoming more used to, even if she is still only beginning to process the shock.

“You can never guarantee from one talk to the next whether there might be a wee wobble. I let people know – if I do get emotional, it’s okay, you don’t have to rush up on the stage with tissues. That’s just how it is, it’s still quite raw,” Zarifeh said.

She plans to share five key strategies of working through grief, including activity, giving, connecting, choosing what to focus on and keeping on learning.

For herself, last year was one of “active grieving”, where she found walking the Camino de Santiago Trail, an experience which will feature in the upcoming Camino

The former Christchurch Boys’ High

School senior monitor of 2015 made international headlines with his valedictory speech, inspiring with phrases such as “be gallant, be great, be gracious”. He delivered it from his wheelchair following falling ill with Burkett’s Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma just one week prior, and being given only two weeks to live if it went untreated.

Bailey’s cancer was announced as being in remission in January 2016, and yesterday he said he was today feeling fitter and healthier now than ever before.

He had been taking part in endurance events including a 1400- kilometre charity cycle and the Coast to Coast in February.

In January he celebrated the three-year anniversary of his remission from the cancer, and had another two years to count down until he would be officially cured.

“I know that three years ago today, when I couldn’t walk unassisted and the doctors told me they couldn’t guarantee that I ever would walk normally again, I would never have dreamed of this day,” Bailey said at the time.

“I never would have foreseen myself being in this career or on the speaking circuit, and I never could have imagined how rewarding it would feel to be able to help people and give back to them as they gave to me when I needed it most.”

Cancer Society Ashburton spokesperson Mandy Casey said yesterday tickets for the presentation had sold well but some were still available.

The chilly weather was handed to the nation by a polar blast which brought heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail and even snow to much of the country over the weekend.

However, heavy rain is set to return and hit the entire North Island this week and temperatures drop as another weather system packs a punch.

We’re officially four days into winter and temperatures will continue to drop as we head further into the season.

Here are five ways to fight the cold: ■■ Remove the dampness from your home. Get your dehumidifier pumping to remove condensation from the air.

■■ Open and close your curtains. While the winter sun might not be as strong as in the summer, it’s important to open your curtains in the morning to let the sun heat your home and close your curtains as the sun goes down to try to retain the heat.

■■ Block those chilly drafts. Make sure all your doors and windows are sealed around your home to restrict and stop the impact of cool winds. Curtains help block any drafts but a door sausage can help block any draughts from sliding under doors.

■■ Layers, layers and more layers. Don’t be afraid to pile on the extra clothing. Wrap up warm when you’re outside with extra layers, including jackets, scarves and gloves.

■■ Stay warm in bed. Dust off the old hot water bottle and fill it up before heading off to bed each night.

Another way is to add extra layers of bedding, sheets, blankets and duvets all help.

Miller described the alleged offenders as being aged between 17-20 years old, two were Pakeha, while another was Pasifika.

He said they were wearing dark hoodies and red hats.

Police were reported to be reviewing CCTV footage from the liquor store.

A police spokesperson told the Herald they are currently investigating an aggravated robbery incident.

“Police are investigating this incident and are following positive lines of enquiries to identify the offenders involved.”

Miller is currently at home recovering from his injuries.

He has since issued a warning against hitch-hiking, no matter how friendly people appear to be.

“Don’t hitch-hike, don’t put yourself in a vulnerable position where your safety is in the hands of others.

“It’s not worth the risk.”

Police are investigating after a man who was trying to hitch a ride to help his stranded flatmate was brutally attacked by a group of men in Silverdale over the weekend.

On Saturday night between 9.15pm and 9.40pm, 22-year-old Valkerim Miller was at the liquor store and on the way to help his flatmates with car troubles when he was viciously assaulted in the back of a car.

Miller received a phone call from his stranded flatmate Jaydee Maclang asking if he could walk a can of petrol to their car after they ran out of gas.

While at the Silverdale Liquor Centre, Miller asked a group of three men if they would give him a ride up the road to the petrol station.

But his night turned to horror when he climbed into the men’s car, was driven 500m up the road and allegedly bashed and robbed.

“After jumping in, they drove 500m before putting him in a headlock, bashed his face in the back of the car, pushed him out and drove off,” flatmate Maclang told the Herald.

Twenty two-year-old Valkerim Miller was brutally assaulted in the back of a stranger’s car.

“He was walking to me and my partner to help us. In the meantime, they stole his cellphone and his wallet with $300 and booted him out the door like a piece of trash.

“It’s disgusting, and it’s absolutely heartbreaking. This person is trying to help someone and then they bash him. He’s only 22.”

Miller said he spent the night in hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.

Miller cannot currently see out of his left eye and received stitches for his injuries.

“My whole left eye is fully swollen, I can’t see out of it, and my right eye is swollen.

“I got six stitches in my eye and injuries to my elbow. They put

Hitch-hiker brutally bashed

NZME A Christchurch school was in lockdown during a police operation yesterday afternoon.

A Wharenui School spokesperson said police told them to go into lockdown. She said children at the school were in the after school care programme.

Police received a report of a person with a firearm at an address on Matipo St at about 3.30pm, a spokeswoman said.

Officers along with the Armed Offenders Squad responded. All units had now been stood down.

The police reopened Matipo St after it was closed between Riccarton Road and Blenheim Road due to a police operation, The Christchurch Transport Operations Centre said.

The manager of Wharenui Swimming Pool and Sports centre said police had first told the centre to go into lockdown at 3.30pm.

She said she had been told police had caught someone in the Wharenui School Grounds.

Police had earlier posted an officer at the swim centre’s front door.

“We had a lockdown procedure so we kept everyone in the building.”

Treasury boss under investigation over Budget comments NZME State Services Commissioner Peter Hughes has officially confirmed he will look into whether Treasury Secretary Gabriel Makhlouf misled the Government about how confidential Budget 2019 information was accessed.

This follows strong rhetoric from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern yesterday, when she said it was something she expected Hughes to look into.

Hughes said in a statement that the investigation will look into recent questions raised concerning Makhlouf, “and his actions and public statements about the

causes of the unauthorised access to Budget material”.

“The investigation will establish the facts in relation to Mr Makhlouf’s public statements about the causes of the unauthorised access; the advice he provided to his Minister at the time; his basis for making those statements and providing that advice; and the decision to refer the matter to the Police.”

Deputy State Services Commissioner, John Ombler QSO, will lead the investigation.

“Mr Makhlouf believes that at all times he acted in good faith,” Hughes said.

“Nonetheless, he and I agree

that it is in everyone’s interests that the facts are established before he leaves his role on June 27, if possible. Mr Makhlouf is happy to co-operate fully to achieve that.”

Makhlouf, who is leaving on June 27 to take up a role as head of the Irish Central Bank, will continue working during this period.

The commission is already holding an inquiry into the security of the Treasury’s website, but Ardern said at her post-Cabinet press conference yesterday that she expected the commission to look at the “quality of advice that was provided to ministers as well”.

National Party leader Simon Bridges has called for Makhlouf to resign for implying that the party had hacked into the Treasury’s website to obtain confidential Budget 2019 information.

But National staffers had simply used the website’s search function, and police have said that nothing illegal appeared to have taken place.

Bridges has also called for Finance Minister Grant Robertson to resign for being “donkey deep” in what happened.

National has also asked for communications between Ardern said Robertson’s office to be looked at, but Ardern said she

had already released that information.

Last week Ardern said in the House that she had found out about the Treasury’s referral of the matter to police only after Makhlouf had informed Robertson on Tuesday evening.

Ardern also clarified today that Treasury did not seek any Government advice before calling the police, adding that that was appropriate because it avoided any perception that the decision was a political one.

She had not received an offer or resignation from Makhlouf.

“As of now I do not believe any resignation has been offered.”

Praise for the boys and girls in blue I

t doesn’t seem that long ago that a serious youth crime issue was crippling this district, so news emerging from local authorities that it would appear that issue is on a decline should be welcomed by all corners.

A few years back now there were serious concerns for the safety of property, and the safety of individuals for that fact too, around the Ashburton District as a group of youths went on a spree, breaking into multiple premises on a number of occasions and were noted to be threatening and intimidating people, especially around the Ashburton CBD. It’s down to the good work of local police, in particular those

who specifically deal with youth crime, that we can rest a little easier on the matter, although it’s nowhere near obsolete with some areas still of concern around the district.

Too often we, as the public, are critical of the work that our policing staff do. They’re not responding to our calls quick enough, they seem ignorant to the fact

that there are issues going on or that they’re doing nothing for the safety of our community.

But the truth of the matter is that our police are actually quite remarkable.

The work they do, particularly in dealing with unruly youth or criminals of an older age must be both frustrating and emotionally draining. No matter what effort they put in, or what concessions might be made for youthful stupidity or other underlying issues, there’s always those same offenders who walk out the door one way and come back in the other almost automatically.

And it doesn’t stop with just youth crime. We can bemoan the policeman who sits down the

road and pings us for creeping over the speed limit, or being distracted by a cellphone as we go about our normal day – but they’re the first ones to respond if those same actions cause us to have an accident.

What they see on our roads must be horrifying and yesterday, watching all those police cars go flying from Ashburton up to Methven to attend and assist at the double fatality under Mt Hutt really hammered home that, at the drop of a hat, you can count on them to rush towards something that most other people would run from.

It’s easy to be critical. They’re public figures with nowhere to hide, but I’d much rather have

them there doing their best in some very difficult situations, than not have them at all.

What you tend to find is those that are incredibly critical of their efforts are those who find themselves on the wrong side of the law and they use social media and the likes to vent their frustrations at their own decision-making processes.

So, not that the majority of people reading this will need to know, but it’s worth acknowledging the efforts of our local girls and boys in blue. What they do is truly appreciated but most of all, the positive signs we are starting to see around the district, particularly with the decline in youth crime is a credit to those efforts.

Teaching not a profession and I’m sick of lip service

’m striking. Not so much about my own pay. I am middle-aged, single and financially comfortable, although not from teaching.

I am striking because I am tired of the lip service that politicians of all persuasions pay to education and teachers in this country. Lots of talk, no action.

They call teachers “professionals”. We are definitely not professionals. A profession controls entry into its own ranks.

Lawyers, doctors and even accountants are “professionals”.

Teachers are not professionals in this country.

We have little control over entry into our own ranks. We have little control over our pay and conditions.

We retain a colonial attitude to education in this country, likely a legacy of our youthful history. We were a society where land was the crucial resource for acquiring wealth. Formal knowledge and learning were held in little regard.

Getting on with doing the job was crucial. A number 8 fencing wire approach prevailed. Higher education was regarded as a luxury. But the world has moved on.

Education is crucial to our success as a country. We are living in knowledge based societies. Land is no longer the main source of wealth creation. Knowledge is.

Smart, motivated teachers are essential for the success of our

Forget about education hubs, technology devices and endless other curriculum and assessment reforms.

Smart, motivated teachers inspire students to succeed.

Everything else is peripheral.

One of the saddest things about the current state of teaching in New Zealand is not the teacher shortage. It is the fact

young. We need to pay our best teachers much more to inspire the best and brightest to regard teaching as a viable option. We are selling our children short and wasting a lot of potential talent in our young people.

There may be potential Thomas Edisons and Martin Luther Kings who are falling through the cracks because of the gaping holes in our schooling system.

But at the same time we need to ensure that great pay for great teachers is linked to greater accountability.

that principals are being forced to put warm bodies in front of classes to plug gaps.

That good kids are being put off learning because the calibre of teachers is declining as principals desperately search for someone to unlock the door and supervise the class.

The other sad aspect is that schools in poorer areas are the worst affected.

Teacher supply acts like a food chain. Private schools get first eating rights because they pay the most and provide the best conditions. Next comes high decile schools with access to extra funding, such as fee paying overseas students.

The schools that cater for the poorest in our society often get the teaching leftovers. Not always. There are some wonderful inspirational educators in our least affluent schools. But they are definitely at the bottom of the supply chain.

We were once a country that prided itself on equality of opportunity. No longer.

Fan gets to grope Miley Miley Cyrus was groped by a fan in Barcelona over the weekend. The 26-year-old singer found herself in a panic on Sunday when a fan lunged towards her while she and her husband Liam Hemsworth left their hotel in the Spanish city, threw his arms around her neck and pulled her in for a smooch.

The Wrecking Ball hitmaker managed to turn her head just before the man – whose identity is not known – was able to plant a kiss on her cheek. Security guards stepped in and managed to prise the fan off Miley, before she ran towards the 29-year-old actor.

Trade talks high on agenda AP President Donald Trump will turn from pageantry to policy today as he joins British Prime Minister Theresa May for a day of talks likely to highlight fresh uncertainty in the allies’ storied relationship.

Trump and May are due to meet with corporate executives from the United States and United Kingdom, before an afternoon news conference on the second day of Trump’s state visit.

The leaders’ top priority is a possible bilateral trade deal to

take effect once the UK leaves the European Union.

“Big Trade Deal is possible once U.K. gets rid of the shackles. Already starting to talk,” Trump tweeted yesterday, as he launched his visit with a day of royal pomp and circumstance.

A contestant from The Chase has revealed what it’s really like to appear on the show and what goes on behind the scenes.

A quizzer called Dorinda recently took part in the game show, where she and her fellow teammates each took home £6500. Class features has been fitted into its Boeing 777.200 aircraft flying the Auckland-Doha route, the second longest route in the world. The patented suites are a big step up on its existing seats for privacy and personal space for the 14,500km journey that can take 17h 30m.

Although some First Class cabins on other airlines feature seats and suites that can be made into double beds, Qsuite is the first-ever double available in Business Class. Panels that stow away allow passengers in adjoining seats to create their own private room.

The panels and movable TV monitors (which are 57cm wide) on the centre four seats allow workmates friends or families travelling together to transform their space into a private suite, allowing them to work, dine and

socialise together. It means Qsuite passengers all get direct aisle access from the 1-2-1 configuration, an improvement on the older style 2-2-2 seating.

But there is a catch for those not flying in the front of the plane. The Economy section has been retrofitted with more seats meaning the previous 3-3-3 configuration (with 217 seats) is now a tighter fit in the 3-4-3 layout in places to fit in another 13 seats.

Radwanski said the new slimline seats were more spacious and Economy passengers will get bigger and better meals from August.

The airline has a reputation for its attention to detail and the Qsuites make extensive use of Italian fabrics.

“That’s essentially who we are attention to detail and high standards,’’ said Radwanski.

Huawei New Zealand operation posted a slightly lower profit for the year to December 31, 2018 – $5.0m vs the year-ago $5.7m, according to accounts just filed.

Revenue increased by 25 per cent to $189m, but was paced by an increase in costs.The Chinese telecommunications giant had tax expenses of $2.1m in 2018, vs $175,000 the year before.

There have been big oscillations in Huawei NZ’s revenue. In 2017 it booked $151m; in 2016 $180m.

Earlier, a rep for the company sold the Herald it maintains between 150 and 200 full-time equivalent staff in NZ, with the number ebbing and flowing with contract work.

Huawei’s network infrastructure gear is used in around onethird of the Ultrafast Broadband (UFB) rollout, and it is also a primary technology partner for Spark and 2degrees with their 4G mobile networks.

The financial period included the November 28 political shock of the GCSB blocking Huawei from Spark’s planned 5G mobile network upgrade. However, any commercial impact from that decision will be down the track, with 5G upgrades not due to begin until early to mid-2020. Spark is still assessing whether to submit a revised proposal.

Wellington-based med-tech Volpara Health Technologies says has entered an agreement to buy 100 per cent of US company MRS Systems for $US14.6 million ($22m).

The deal will see Volpara jump from around 7 per cent to more than 25 per cent of the US breast screening market.

The purchase, and further international expansion over the next three years, will be funded by a $A55m rights issue, which will top up the company’s $14.4m cash.

The ASX-listed Volpara makes software for analysing breast images to aid in the early detection of breast cancer, plus cloud-based software for running a breast screening clinic.

Buying MRS (Medical Reporting Software) will boost Volpara’s presence in the latter market, where it’s currently at a single-digit per cent.

MRS’ software is used to run around 1700 clinics, giving it a 20 per cent of the practice management market, with most of the balance split between four rivals of roughly similar size.

The Seattle-based MRS is described as a “bootstrapped” startup that was founded in 1987 and now has 50 staff.

In an ASX filing, Volpara says MRS is “profitable” with a gross margin of 90 per

average revenue per breast screen from $US2.20 to $US10.00, though no timeframe is given.

Volapra, which is still in the early stages of commericalising its software, made a $2.6m loss in its March quarter.

Speaking to the Herald in April, Volpara co-founder CEO and major shareholder Dr Ralph Highnam would not give any forecast on when it would break into the black – and there was no updated guidance on that front in documentation around the capital raise.

Volpara shares closed flat yesterday at $A1.85, giving it a market cap of $A333 million.

One Australian commentator called that valuation “scarily high,” but investors have been buoyed by a series of positive developments.

The med-tech listed on the ASX at $A0.50 a share in in June 2016 and shares were relatively flat until a bull run that began in October last year on several pieces of good news, including a law change that made it compulsory for all US screening facilities to provide women with information about their breast density – a key indicator of cancer risk (no equivalent provision exists in NZ), and expansion of Volpara’s partnership with X-ray machine maker GE from the US to Europe, Asia and other territories.

Let a casserole warm you T

he key ingredient during winter when it comes to dinner is for food that’s warming, hearty and makes you feel good.

And with that in mind it takes a lot to beat a good casserole. Often that means you can use cheaper cuts of meat as slow cooking ensures what comes out is rich, tender and oh so tasty.

Potato, bacon and sausage casserole

Italian beef casserole 1kg chuck or boneless shin/ gravy beef 1 large onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 each red and green capsicum, chopped 2T plain flour 2T tomato paste 1 1/2 C beef stock 400g can diced tomatoes 1T dried oregano 400g can cannellini beans, well drained

1T oil 8 large pork sausages 4 rashers of bacon, cut into pieces 1 large onion 2 garlic cloves, crushed 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced 1/4 t fresh sage 1 1/4 C vegetable stock Salt and pepper ■■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■■ Gently cook sausages for 5 mins until golden. Remove from pan and set aside.

■■ Add bacon to pan and fry.

■■ Add onion and cook through.

■■ Add garlic and fry for another 30 seconds.

■■ Arrange 1/2 the sliced potato in bottom of casserole dish ■■ Add the bacon, onion and garlic mix.

■■ Sprinkle fresh sage over the mix.

■■ Layer remaining potato slices and then add sausages on top.

■■ Pour stock over and cover with lid.

■■ Cook on high for 1 hour until potato is tender.

■■ Cut beef into 2.5cm-3cm pieces and season with salt and pepper.

■■ Brown the meat in a frying pan over a high heat and transfer to a slow cooker.

■■ Scatter in the onion, garlic and capsicums.

■■ Stir the flour, tomato paste and beef stock together to make a smooth paste and pour over the beef.

■■ Add the tomatoes, scatter in the oregano and cover.

■■ Cook in a lidded ovenproof dish at 180°C for 2 hours.

■■ Add the cannellini beans, stir to mix and allow to heat through before serving.

Rich beef casserole

Sausage casserole

750g beef, diced 1T plain flour 1T olive oil 8 pickling onions, peeled 2 carrots, thickly sliced 1C (250ml) red wine 1C (250ml) beef stock 2T tomato paste Rosemary sprigs 1 bay leaf 400g baby potatoes 200g small button mushrooms Chopped parsley, to serve Steamed green beans (optional), to serve

1kg good-quality sausages 1T olive oil 20g butter 2 (600g) brown onions, sliced 1/4 C (35g) plain flour 2C (500ml) beef stock 1/3 C (80ml) water 2T worcestershire sauce 1/4 C (70g) tomato sauce

■■ Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced).

■■ Toss together beef and flour.

■■ Heat oil in a heavy-based flameproof casserole pan on high.

■■ Cook beef in batches for 3-5 minutes, until brown.

■■ Add onions and carrot and cook for 5 minutes, until golden.

■■ Add wine, stock, tomato paste, rosemary and bay leaf. Season to taste and bring to boil.

■■ Cover and cook in oven for 1 hour.

■■ Add potatoes and mushrooms and cook for another 30 minutes, until beef is very tender.

■■ Scatter with parsley and serve with steamed beans, if you like.

■■ Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced).

■■ Place sausages on an oven tray lined with baking paper.

■■ Bake for about 10 minutes or until browned. Slice thickly.

■■ Heat the oil and butter in a heavy-based pan.

■■ Add onion; cook, stirring, over medium heat for 5-6 minutes or until browned lightly.

■■ Add the flour to the onion; cook, stirring, for 1 minute or until browned.

■■ Gradually add the stock and the water, then add the sauces and sausages.

■■ Simmer, covered, for about 20 minutes or until the sausages are cooked through (or cover and cook in the oven for about 20 minutes).

■■ Season to taste with salt and ground white pepper.

■■ Serve with creamy mashed potato and buttered green vegetables.

Chicken casserole 1T coconut oil 1kg chicken pieces 2 shallots or 1 onion, finely sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 celery sticks, thickly sliced 2 carrots, cut into 2cm chunks 2 leeks, cut into 2cm chunks 600g kumara, peeled and cut into large chunks 1T plain flour 600ml hot chicken stock 2 rosemary sprigs Half a lemon ■■ Heat oil in a large, flameproof casserole. Season chicken pieces and brown all over for 10min.

Remove and set aside. Drain fat from the pan – there should be around 75ml. Pour just 1T oil back in to the pan and discard the rest. Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan oven).

■■ Add the onion, garlic, celery, carrots, leeks and potatoes to the pan, and cook, stirring, for 5-10 minutes. Stir in the flour, cook for 2 minutes, then pour in the stock. Season well, then return the browned chicken to the pan.

■■ Add the rosemary, squeeze over the juice from the lemon half and pop the squeezed lemon half into the pan. Cover and bring the casserole to the boil.

■■ Cook in the oven for 25-30min until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce is piping hot and thickened.

Hints:

■■ Remove extra moisture from wet vegetables before cooking if you don’t want to end up with a pool at the bottom of your casserole.

■■ You may need to partially cook your harder veges before throwing it in the casserole. You can par-cook vegetables by steaming, boiling and even roasting. Just remember not to cook them all the way.

■■ Don’t cook pasta all the way through before using in a casserole. Regular pasta doesn’t really have the chance to cook properly if you add it in its dry state to your casserole. And if you cook it all the way, it turns to mush.

blackened. Set aside to cool then rinse under running water rubbing off the skins and charred parts.

■■ Place chicken, onion, ginger, garlic, coriander root and stalks into a large stock pot, add fish sauce, soy sauce, sugar and water and bring to the boil. Turn down the heat and simmer for 35 minutes or until chicken is

cooked. Continue to skim off any foam building up.

■■ Remove chicken drumsticks, set aside to cool, take the meat off the bone and discard the bones and skin.

■■ Strain stock into a clean pot, bring to a boil and adjust seasoning as necessary. Add asian greens and chicken meat.

■■ Place a pot of water on to the stove and bring to a boil. Place noodles into a strainer with handle and dunk into the boiling water until soft.

■■ Divide the bean sprouts into bowls, add noodles and pour over stock, chicken and greens.

■■ Garnish with coriander leaves, a grind of pepper and serve with lemon wedges.

This season the Chiefs halfback has delivered one of the great battling-against-the-odds campaigns, where his energy, tenacity and ability to make things happen are the primary reason his team is still clinging to the hope of making the playoffs.

Weber has been irrepressible – seemingly powered by a conviction that if he keeps running and keeps believing, those around him will find it infectious.

It hasn’t always worked out, but it did against the Crusaders in Suva. There was this sense that at 20-0 down the Chiefs were ready to throw in the towel but then saw their indefatigable number nine ferreting here, there and everywhere and were inspired to collectively lift themselves to previously unknown heights.

The win in Fiji was the reward that Weber deserved – a kind of thank you from his team-mates for everything he’s done for them this year.

The Chiefs have managed to get by without the colossal presence of Brodie Retallick, Sam Cane and Damian McKenzie for much of this season, but it’s doubtful they would still have even a remote chance of making the last eight had it not been for Weber.

And that is, of course, what makes things fascinating as Weber has produced dynamic, in-

spiring rugby while the man the All Blacks selectors rate above him, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, has barely been sighted.

Such a situation is not unheard of. There have been plenty of occasions in the past where a club has ranked two players in the same position in a different order to the national selectors.

Cane hardly played Super Rugby in 2012 as the Chiefs wanted to start with Tanerau Latimer at openside, yet the All Blacks picked the former.

And as All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said earlier this week, Tahuriorangi didn’t play much for the Chiefs last year either, but they saw enough to pick him ahead of Weber.

Tahuriorangi has mostly played well and shown that he’s in possession of a natural passing game which makes him the closest player in style to Aaron Smith.

Potentially Hansen could justify selecting Tahuriorangi again on the basis that he wants a player in the squad with a similar skillset to Smith.

It won’t be a make-or-break selection in terms of the World

Cup defence – the third halfback may barely play in Japan, which is why it is probable rather than certain that the All Blacks will even take three.

But if the All Blacks do decide to take three halfbacks to the World Cup and Tahuriorangi is included alongside Smith and TJ Perenara, not many people will understand why.

It will be a hard argument to justify. Impossible almost because sometimes a player produces such an obviously brilliant body of work that to not reward them with national recognition is to endanger the entire ethos on which the selection system is built.

Weber has had an incredible influence. He’s damaged teams with his support running and vision and in a side often falling apart. He’s been instrumental in upping the tempo at which the Chiefs play and involving himself in those critical, game-turning plays. And most importantly, his work rate has been off the scale and there just can’t be any doubt that the All Blacks could make good use of what he is offering.

There can’t be any doubt that if he’s overlooked, it will send a terrible message about how much the selectors value work rate, influence, character and sheer determination to stay in the fight.

Weber has earned a call-up and if nothing else, a chance to wear the black jersey at least once before the World Cup squad is picked to show that he can deliver in the test arena what he has been producing in Super Rugby.

No luck at South Island champs

A quarter-final in the fours at the South Island championships was the best result for Ashburton indoor bowlers on the weekend at the championships held in Christchurch.

With some strong combinations heading up the road to compete in the event, local players will have left with some disappointment after looking set to enjoy a good long weekend of bowls in the wide-open competition.

The effort of Willowby players Mat Bassett, Graeme Chapman, Murray Bassett and Neil Chapman to make the quarter-finals of a strong field of fours teams was the weekend highlight, with the Bassett combination putting forward a strong weekend of play, making the knockout stages in all three disciplines.

Rakaia player, John Gibbs, playing with his brother-in-law and sister, Tony and Janet Fenemor from Blenheim and also Maurice Berkeley from Christchurch also made it to the last eight in the fours competition.

In the pairs on Saturday, the locals put themselves in a good position to push for higher honours, with five combinations making it through to the knockout stages.

Neil Atkinson and Bill Allnut, Mat and Murray Bassett, Maurice and Ann Sunbeam and Chris Guy and Cecil Tubb all qualified for post section play but were eliminated in the last 32 while Ken and Rowena Mackenzie made it through to the last 16 before being eliminated.

Waikato visitors, Shaun Blackbourn and Joy Archer won the title.

Murray Bassett produced some of the best results for the locals at the South Island Indoor Bowls championships on the weekend.

On Sunday the fours were claimed by former Ashburton player Simon Thomas along with Steve Fisher, Avon Compton and Nicole Singer.

In the triples event on Monday,

the Bassett pairing, along with Graeme Chapman and Gibbs playing with the Fenemor pair both made the last 16 before being knocked out.

The title was won by David

Archer, along with Blackbourn and Archer who capped off a great weekend after their pairs victory on Saturday.

cals this week with a contingent of players heading to Rotorua to compete in the National Championships which begin on Saturday and run for the course of the week.

Djokovic well-motivated at Roland Garros AP

Novak Djokovic faces up-and-comer Alexander Zverev next up.

Novak Djokovic is into his record 10th consecutive French Open quarter-final, something not even King of Clay Rafael Nadal has managed to do.

And Djokovic is yet to be challenged at all this year at Roland Garros. Not only hasn’t he lost a set – he’s only twice ceded as many as four games in a set.

Extending his Grand Slam winning streak to 25 matches and closing in on a fourth championship in a row, Djokovic was dominant yet again in the fourth round Monday, beating 45th-ranked Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

“Everything is coming together beautifully.

“I’m motivated to fight for the trophy, yes. I mean, that’s why I’m here,” said Djokovic, who owns 15 Slam titles, including one in Paris.

“But it’s still a long way to go.”

It’s helped, certainly, that the No. 1-ranked Djokovic has not needed to deal with a single seeded foe yet.

That will change now: He faces No. 5 Alexander Zverev for a spot in the semi-finals.

Have things been too easy so far?

Is it possible that Djokovic hasn’t had the proper preparation for what could be tougher going in the latter portion of the tournament?

“I don’t mind cruising along, to be honest,” he said with a smile.

“I have plenty of experience, I think, dealing with situations where you’re facing break points or where it’s tense. I have played plenty of, I think, tight matches in my career, that I can rely on that experience.”

He added: “It’s good to be tested, from that perspective, but at the same time, it’s also good to cruise along and kind of conserve the energy for what’s coming up.”

Djokovic and Zverev have split four previous tour meetings.

Zverev reached his second straight quarter-final in Paris by coming back to eliminate No. 9 Fabio Fognini 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

He’s only 22, but Zverev has been

touted as a future champion for quite some time.

He has yet to play in a major semi-final, though, and mentioned that he enjoyed getting to be a bit under the radar so far in this French Open, noting that 20-yearold Stefanos Tsitsipas was a subject of more focus until losing in the fourth round to Stan Wawrinka.

“For me,” Zverev said, “it was actually quite a nice thing that not all of the attention ... is only going towards my way.”

Unlike Djokovic, he has not exactly had an easy path to the round of eight: Zverev needed to win two five-setters in addition to going four against Fognini.

The other quarter-final on their half of the draw will be No. 4 Dominic Thiem against No. 10 Karen Khachanov, who got past 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro 7-5, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to make it to the final eight for the first time.

Thiem advanced by eliminating the last Frenchman in the field, No. 14 Gael Monfils, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

Another final, another draw I

t’s like kissing your sister.

They’re words I heard more than once in the minutes that followed the final whistle being blown on this year’s Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Cup final between Southern and Glenmark-Cheviot on Monday.

After an incredible 100 minutes of rugby the game ended in a 31-all draw.

After the usual 80 minutes, and 10 minutes each way of extra time, the two sides could not be separated, and it certainly was an odd feeling.

It wasn’t the first drawn rugby final I’d covered.

I’d been the reporter on the sideline for three drawn finals in my time at the Guardian – two in the combined competition and one in the Watters Cup – and unfortunately for Southern, they’d been one of those teams on all three occasions.

But I don’t remember the other two being quite as dramatic as the one that played out in front of hundreds of raucous spectators in Omihi on Monday.

It was a rollercoaster.

Glenmark had the better of the first half, but Southern had

the better of the second half.

Down 14-10 at half-time, Southern fought back into the match to draw level at 20-all, and that was where the rollercoaster really started tossing people around and toying with emotions.

Traded penalties, two of them to each side, took it to 26-all when the final whistle sounded to send the game to an extra 20 minutes.

Glenmark got a try in the first half of extra time, but Brook Retallick missed the conversion meaning that when Matt McAtamney crossed for one last try for Southern in the dying stages of extra time, a conversion would have won it for the visitors.

Up stepped the man some call Mr Rugby.

That sideline conversion attempt was on the shoulders of Jon Dampney, the barn-storming number eight who had played well over 200 games for his club and this year taken on the goal-kicking duties for the team with a pretty good accuracy rate.

But that one – the one I’m sure he’ll go to bed replaying in his

head for the next wee while – missed.

Yes, if he’d landed it, it would have won it for his side, but in reality it was just one of many moments that made up an absolute cracker of a game.

Southern should’ve had a try on the left flank in the first few minutes of the game, but a communication breakdown thwarted that one, and then they had two penalty chances in the second half where they instead opted to kick for touch.

They backed themselves to score, but didn’t, and had the decision or the outcome been different in any of those moments, the course of the game would have changed and the overall outcome would have been different.

Southern wouldn’t have been in the position of needing to

land a last-minute goal to go over, had they converted some of those other chances.

Had they crossed for that early try and followed that up with the one that Bryan Hazel did actually score a few minutes later, they’d have been out to a two-try lead and in any game that’s pretty handy, let alone in a final where early momentum is vital.

Games are made up by a series of moments, and even the smallest can end up having a big impact on the overall outcome.

A 50/50 call that went your way one week, might not the next, and sometimes the bounce of the ball went your way and other times it didn’t.

As hands were shaken, backs were patted and photographs taken after the final whistle, two young boys were standing holding the trophy.

One was one of Dampney’s children, and the other belonged to Southern prop Aaron Chudleigh, and I heard someone call them future Southern players.

Dampney senior managed a slight smile and replied “yeah, but hopefully they can actually win it”.

Mid Canterbury’s defence of the Ian Smith Trophy in Gore over the long weekend was unsuccessful, with the senior men’s rep hockey side failing to even pick up a win.

The Mid Canterbury men won the trophy for the first time in six years in 2018, but this year it was a vastly different experience, starting off with a 4-1 loss to Eastern Southland on Saturday morning.

They needed to bounce back in their second match of the tournament in the afternoon against Invercargill, and after a tight encounter the two sides finished level at 2-all.

On day two they took on North Otago and lost 3-1, before losing 3-2 to Central Otago in the afternoon.

The tournament wrapped up on Monday morning, with the defending champion Mid Canterbury side finishing the tournament off with a 2-0 loss to neighbours South Canterbury.

Eastern Southland ended up taking the Ian Smith Trophy home and Invercargill finished as runners-up, but Mid Canterbury did end up with two players – Sam Moore and Hayden Sinclair – named in the tournament team.

While the men were in Gore, the Mid Canterbury women were in Ashburton playing in the Finch Rosebowl tournament, which they won for the first time since 2003.

The son of rock legend Rod Stewart and Kiwi supermodel Rachel Hunter made an impressive debut for his Queenstown ice hockey team as they triumphed in a season-opening double header.

Liam Stewart, 24, Rod Stewart’s second child to his second wife, former model Rachel Hunter, signed with the Queenstown-based SkyCity Stampede ice hockey team for the 2019 season.

During their opening two games Stewart and his teammates enjoyed two comfortable wins over the Dunedin Thunder in Queenstown, 6-0 and 6-2 respectively.

Stewart said he was enjoying the team atmosphere, and was happy to score a goal on debut and for the team to get wins in both games.

British-born Stewart, a forward, holds a New Zealand passport through his mother, and has used it to play as a “local’’ in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League.

Talented jockey Alysha Collett has been presented with a major incentive to resume her riding career after eight months on the sideline.

The 25-year-old has been relicensed in Singapore from July 1 and is keen to take up the sixmonth contract once she has regained some of her race-riding fitness and focus in New Zealand.

“I see my surgeon next Monday and hopefully I will get my clearance to start race riding again,” she said.

“I have been riding horses as part of the ACC back-to-work programme and going to the gym most days.

“If I get my clearance I plan to ride at the Taupo trials the next day then hopefully be back riding at the races the following Saturday at Ruakaka.

“I’m happy to get my Singapore licence again.

“I enjoyed my time over there last year and, though it was a bit slow for me to start with, it was starting to go well until my fall.”

Collett has been off the scene since a fall in Singapore last October left her with serious damage to her L1 lumbar vertebra and a fractured right heel.

She underwent surgery in Singapore to have metal rods and screws inserted to stabilise her lumbar region and it has been a long, slow road to recovery.

“For four months I lost everything (fitness-wise) because I couldn’t move properly,” she said.

“I couldn’t do a lot with the rods in.

“They were a massive restriction.

“But since I had the operation about five weeks ago to have the rods (and screws) removed I’ve been able to do more and start to get my fitness back.

“There is a little bit of restriction because of the scar tissue, but I’ve been working on it and gradually in the last two weeks I’ve got more freedom.”

During her time on the sideline Collett did television appearances as part of the Trackside presentation team at the major summer racing carnivals and, though she enjoyed the media experience, resuming her riding career is her main focus.

Collett has kicked home 409 winners, 375 in New Zealand and 23 in Australia to go with 11 in Singapore.

The highlights have included her first Group One win on Consensus in the 2016 Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie and finishing second on the New Zealand Jockeys’ Premiership behind Chris Johnson with a personal best of 97 wins in the 2016-17 season.

Though Collett is licensed from July 1 in Singapore, she wants to ensure she is happy with her raceday fitness before heading there.

“It’s too good an opportunity to pass up and I want to get as fit as I can here before I go to Singapore,” she said.

“I know I won’t be as sharp as I was when I went over last year, but I know I’m going to get fitter and sharper as I go along.

“I’m really looking forward to being back riding and getting over there.”

Alysha Collett is well on the way to recovery from a major fall.

You can almost hear the sighs of relief from this side of the Tasman.

Because that will be the overwhelming response when the connections of Australia’s best young harness horses realise they don’t have to combat the full force of the All Stars machine this winter.

Aussies preparing horses for the elite races at the Queensland and more importantly Breeders Crown carnivals would have been waiting to hear which members of the Purdon/Rasmussen stable were coming to savage them as they so often have in the last five years.

The answer is: almost none.

In a remarkable change of attitude from much of the last decade Purdon has decided he may have only three, or even two, horses campaigning in Australia over winter.

He has confirmed impressive lower-grade Ashburton winner from Sunday, Self Assured, will head to Queensland and be aimed at the Derby and could have a maiden stablemate who joins him and stays on in Australia.

That is hardly frightening stuff for the Aussies but there could be a far more high profile stable rep should outstanding filly Princess Tiffany pass a coming veterinary examination with flying colours.

Purdon says the change of attitude this season comes as many of his horses have had long campaigns while others need remedial work.

Bangladesh a serious threat

By Niall Anderson They were easy-beats four months ago, but a change in conditions – and one key addition – is set to make Bangladesh a much tougher challenge for the Black Caps at the Cricket World Cup. As they were getting easily dismantled in a 3-0 series sweep in their New Zealand ODI series, few would have picked Bangladesh to be able to topple South Africa in their World Cup opener.

However, their highest ODI score – 330-6 – earned them a superb 21-run win, and reminded the Black Caps that this will be a far more potent unit than what they had seen on New Zealand soil.

Inspirational all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan – who missed the New Zealand tour – is a significant addition, and struck 75 in their opening win.

Bangladesh are also a much more potent side overseas than they are when visiting New Zealand, where they have never won.

That includes in the United Kingdom – where they claimed a stunning five-wicket win over the Black Caps in their solitary UK clash at the 2017 Champions Trophy.

So, the scenes from New Zealand – where Bangladesh were at 94-6, 93-5 and 61-5 on their way to eventual defeats of eight wickets, eight wickets and 88 runs respectively – are less likely to be seen in the Black Caps’ second World Cup clash tonight.

Few know what Bangladesh can produce better than Black Caps bowling coach Shane Jurgensen, who was at the helm as

Bangladesh head coach when they claimed a 3-0 series win over New Zealand in 2013.

He wasn’t surprised by the hot start from his former troops, and isn’t reading anything into their struggles in New Zealand.

“We’re taking them as a completely different team.

“What happened in New Zealand – that series is now long gone and this is the World Cup, they step up for every game, so we’re certainly going to have to be on our toes,” Jurgensen said.

“We know what they’re going to dish up in terms of their bowling, and with their batting they’ve got some really dangerous players.

“They have guys who can come out and really take the game away, they’ve got guys who can bat for long periods, they’re very clever in terms of their batting, and Shakib Al Hasan has the ability to take wickets regardless of the pitch.

“They can also change their pace with the bowlers’ little cutters.

“We know we’re going to have a really tough challenge.”

To help with that challenge, the Black Caps brought in spinner Ajaz Patel to help out at training.

Currently playing with Surrey club Cranleigh, Patel offered another quality left-arm bowling option in the nets; potentially an aid for the Black Caps batsmen before they have to face Shakib’s left-arm spin.

Henry Nicholls and Tim Southee trained under lights at The Oval as they continued their progression from hamstring and calf injuries respectively, with an unwell Martin Guptill the only absentee.

Juniors take centre stage

Some of the top young players in the Squash Midlands district battled it out on the courts at the Ashburton Squash Club on Sunday.

The club was hosting a J grade junior squash tournament, which attracted players from all around the Midlands district and

further afield.

The Midlands district spans from Ashburton down to Oamaru and takes in the 16 affiliated clubs within that zone, and it was a player from within that area who took out the main title on offer.

Two divisions were contested, and division one was taken out

by Pleasant Point’s Finn O’Keefe, who beat Jordan Barker from

Christchurch to claim the crown, while Riley Broker from the Ashburton Squash Club was third.

In division two, Alex Smith from Timaru came out on top with Marlie Ross from Ashburton’s Collegiate Squash Club the runner up.

The tournament was part of the Midlands district’s Alpine Energy Junior Series, which started at the

Temuka Squash Club in May. Ashburton hosted the second tournament and the series will move to the Timaru Squash Club on July 7, followed by the Oamaru Squash and Badminton Club on August 4.

It will then go to the Waimate Squash Club on September 8 and finish up at the Pleasant Point Squash Club on October 6.

Also on the junior calendar is the Midlands Junior Open, which will be hosted by the Temuka Squash Club on August 23 and 24, which will be open to all junior players.

In squash juniors are classed as those 19 and under and Ashburton’s tournament on Sunday attracted kids aged from around eight, through to about 16.
