Mid Cantabrians are being warned to batten down the hatches and prepare for a nasty wintry outbreak featuring rain, gales and heavy snow. Forecasters are expecting weather systems to mingle over the district this week, bringing volatile cold weather and even the possibility of snow down to sea level. MetService meteorologist Claire Flynn said from today we can expect the departure of the weather system which brought rain to much of the country over Queen’s Birthday weekend, and the immediate arrival of another system from the south. While the new system will likely bring
strong southwest winds and put an end to the extreme low temperatures we have seen over the past few days, “it certainly will not be warm”, MetService warned. Ashburton is expected to reach a maximum of 13 degrees over the next 10 days, and Mt Hutt may experience temperatures of -10 degrees tonight. MetService also said there is high confidence that rainfall accumulations could reach warning criteria in Canterbury north of Timaru, with heavy snow likely above 400 metres. And Canterbury Weather Updates weather analyst Russell Voice was warning that snow could fall even lower down, to 100 or 200 metres or even sea level, and farmers should be prepared to bring
stock down from higher elevations. NZTA advised that the conditions have the potential to significantly disrupt travel to other parts of the South Island, particularly on the Lindis Pass, Arthurs Pass, Porters Pass, Lewis Pass and Haast Pass. “It is recommended that you carry chains as these roads are prone to snow and ice throughout this time,” they said. However, the forecasts brought good news for those preparing to head up to Mt Hutt on Saturday for the skifield’s opening weekend. The mountain is expected to receive a dusting of fresh snow today and tomorrow before conditions start to clear at the weekend.
