The Ministry for Primary Industries has launched a massive response out of Ashburton to deal with the mycoplasma bovis outbreak.

The government department has set up a regional co-ordination centre, at an undisclosed location in the town centre.

The location is by no means a secret, says MPI, but it does not want the address publicly printed due to security concerns.

“Like any high-profile organisation

we take security measures to protect the safety of staff,” an MPI spokesperson said in an emailed response to the Guardian.

“We don’t publically advertise the locations of our mycoplasma bovis regional co-ordination centres for security reasons. However, we appreciate that the locations of our RCCs are widely known and are certainly not a secret,” the spokesperson said.

There are about 120 staff at the Ashburton Regional Co-ordination Centre, many of whom are in newly-established

temporary roles, specifically created to work on the response.

They accompany some staff who already had existing roles with MPI and have been seconded into working on the response, as well as staff from AssureQuality, which has been contracted by MPI to undertake some of its response operations.

Immersing viewers in their art work

It’s taken 10, long, “all consuming” days of work, bucket-loads of pink and blue paint even and a few pool noodles to prepare – but Ashburton Art Gallery’s latest exhibition is now open.

Christchurch duo Janna van Hasselt and Harley Peddie let the first crowds into their zany, immersive exhibition Snapdash! last night in the Carr family gallery.

The exhibition is the biggest project undertaken by the two artists and the first time the gallery has seen so much of its space painted, including the floor, said curator Nicole Bourke.

By combining 2D and 3D with big-scale sculptures and bright patterns, the exhibition is designed to completely engulf the viewer, Peddie said.

“It’s been a very intense project to prepare.

“It started with a fair bit of drawing and a few visits to the space … just trying to figure what worked here,” he said.

With the help of Bourke and Shirin Khosraviani, the two

have been able to do their own thing, as they have worked away throughout the past days, van Hasselt said.

Even during the hustle and bustle of the opening of the Ashburton Society of Arts exhibition on Monday night, the two were quietly working away behind closed doors.

What began as confined to one room has also spilled into the hallway adjacent for added dimensional effect, thanks to the trusting staff at the gallery.

Large sculptures, described by Van Hasselt as big, playful characters have also taken shape out of contemporary materials.

The duo have previously created an interactive ground mural for SCAPE festival in Cashel Street, Christchurch, and a psychedelic window installation at the Columbo for designer Annah Stretton.

It’s the first time they’ve tackled a whole room and Peddie said he hopes people will want to take photos in the space.

Snapdash! is now open daily at the Ashburton art Gallery, and will be in place until August 18.

Big response to M. bovis From P1 Centre personnel are undertaking a range of duties targeted at the phased eradication of M. bovis in Mid and North Canterbury and Banks Peninsula.

Roles include incident control point managers who work directly with affected farmers.

Some are in cleaning and disinfecting roles, while others are involved in functions crucial to the smooth running of the response and to achieving MPI’s goal of phased eradication.

The centre was set up at the new site following moving from a smaller office, due to having run out of room as staff numbers grew.

The smaller office was in an Ashburton District Councilowned building on Havelock Street, which the council provided rent free following the M. bovis outbreak.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel told district councillors at a council meeting last week that the building had been a good solution to start, as there had only been a couple of people working on the response.

“But the issue and the response has grown and so therefore they need to find bigger premises,” she said.

Rakaia Gorge delays from next week

With preparation work to strengthen the Rakaia Gorge bridge well under way, motorists are being warned of impending daytime and night-time delays.

The main work on the State Highway 77 No. 1 bridge will begin shortly, and see it closed for periods of between 20 minutes and seven hours at a time.

Beginning next week, the bridge will be open for 10 minutes every half an hour from 7am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.

It will initially remain open at night.

The following week, the same

daytime closures will take place, but the road will also be closed from 10pm to 5am Sunday nights to Friday nights inclusive.

NZTA advised the work will take approximately six weeks until near the end of August.

Electronic signs near the site are advising road users of the upcoming night closures.

“The work crews will do their best to minimise delays during the peak skifield traffic times,” Transport Agency Network Manager Jess McFarlane said.

“The alternative for anyone travelling from Christchurch to Mount Hutt is to go via SH1, Ashburton, to avoid delays in the

gorge.” McFarlane also requested drivers slow down on the bridge while this work is under way.

“Our contractor has noticed a number of vehicles speeding through the site well in excess of the 30km/h restriction. Please slow down through the work site.

The bridge movement caused by faster vehicles makes the work underneath the bridge much more difficult, and puts work crews at risk.”

The work will see the bridge deck replaced, the handrail refurbished and structural elements seismically re-strengthened among other minor safety improvements.

A figure of $1.2 million has been set aside for the project, which will be carried out by Downer and

Opus, under the monitoring and guidance by heritage conservationists.

Striving towards multi-million dollar goal

Methven Care Trust remains committed to raising $5.5 million for a new resthome, although have pushed out the timeline beyond the initial five-year goal.

“We just know it’s going to be a long process,” said chairwoman Joanna Suyker.

After three years the trust has accumulated more than $1m, and Suyker said she and fellow trustees were grateful for the fundraising momentum which had been retained in the community, and how much residents were supporting the project.

“It’s very humbling that it’s at the top of people’s minds,” she said.

Many organisers of community events had named the trust as a recipient, for example Bark Up at the Blue, Methven A&P Show gift calf auction, Methven Lions Club events, and the Methven High Country Fete.

In addition the trust has built up a suite of events and initiatives it continues to rely on, such as its flagship house and garden tour each November.

A farm owner has leased out a property for proceeds to go to the trust, and the trust has invested in 200 lambs which are growing on the farm.

Three anonymous donations totalled $400,000, and the $1m target was reached in April. Since then funds have grown by a further approximate $30,000, mostly from a successful car raffle.

Suyker said it was unknown

just how long it would take to reach the ultimate goal, and it would all come down to just how badly the community wanted it.

“At the end of the day it’s a community thing, and that’s what makes Methven House special.”

The new resthome is to be constructed on donated land in Camrose Estate, and will replace the community-run facility of Methven House, which is reaching the end of its useable life after 40 years.

Suyker said having $1m as the trust approached its fourth annual general meeting, to be held August 1, was fantastic, especially considering at the first AGM there had been just $160,000 in the bank, which had been the proceeds from what Methven House was collecting.

“I think one million in itself is quite credible, and that brings a lot of mana with it, that we are for real,” she said.

Trustees need to get closer to their overall fundraising target before applying for grants, as audit requirements mean they have to have an invoice to show the money has been spent.

“We need to get closer to our overall fundraising target, as we will then have certainty to start commissioning the project,” Suyker said.

Sharkey’s getting sheared

One of Ashburton’s most iconic beards is facing the chop, as its owner raises money for a cause close to his heart.

Mark “Sharkey” Sheard – avid bowler, ex-Sharkeys Takeaways owner and self-confessed Santa – is going completely bald next week to help the Ashburton Team of District and Palliative Care Nurses establish a social fund.

Why? Because it feels good to give a little back to those who give a lot, Sheard said.

Having seen first-hand the compassion and care they provide to clients like his own parents – especially his recently passed mother, he said he wants to put something in place that allows them to be rewarded.

“They do an amazing, selfless job in the community and I think everyone here has been touched in one way or another.

“They allow elderly to stay in their own homes and maintain their independence, and they come over and dress their legs, and call on them at night-time … with some of the things they must see – I think they’d be quite stressed sometimes, but you’d never know.”

Under their contract, nurses are not allowed to accept gifts from clients.

You can say thank you – with eyes full of tears, Sheard said, but at the end of the day it’s only a thank you.

“I want them to be able to have Christmas functions, to go out for a show, do a bus trip up to Christchurch for the day, without having to spend their own money. Because they don’t earn a lot for what they do … and they don’t have a fund of their own.”

Sheard said he had spoken to nurses and was putting things in place to ensure the money is not lost in administration fees.

Sheard is now accepting donations and hoping his cause might garner support from local businesses and even beyond the district.

The big chop itself will take place next Monday at 8am, livestreamed from the studio with Hokonui’s Hoops on Air. “I’ll be getting a blade shave, so hopefully I keep my ears.

Hopefully there’s not too much blood,” Sheard said.

And as for negotiating the winter cold – he said it’s amazing what beanies can do.

He has set up a bank account for the funds, and will be taking donations until the end of the month at ANZ 06 0837 0270192 01 “There’s a lot of charities out there, but nothing quite like this,” he said.

“It’s a pretty special cause.”

Looking good, but feeling even better

Makeup has been putting colour in the day of Look Good Feel Better participants in Ashburton.

This week five women receiving cancer treatment attended the workshop based at the Ashburton Cancer Society building.

Look Good Feel Better was introduced to New Zealand by the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association, which donate makeup and skincare products for the workshops led

by volunteers throughout the country. The Ashburton workshops have been running for about seven years, and about half a dozen are held annually.

Volunteer tutor and beauty therapist Caron Shanks said each workshop generally began with information on the effects cancer and treatment can have on skin and hair, and how to help combat these. It then went into using makeup with plenty of tips, as well as information on haircare and demonstrating scarves and wigs.

“We are so lucky in Ashburton, volunteers from the Cancer Society put on a beautiful lunch for our ladies so it’s more bonding time after the class.”

The women enjoyed not only learning about cosmetics, but also the camaraderie and connectedness the workshops offered.

Shanks had been participating as a volunteer since the programme began in Ashburton.

“I love dealing with makeup, and I love how makeup makes people feel, and I love uplift-

ing women’s spirits and making them feel good,” she said.

Meanwhile, Look Good Feel Better is the charity set to benefit this year from the nationwide Dry July initiative.

A Dry July NZ spokesperson said support had been fantastic, with 5865 people signed up already and $253,007 raised so far.

The funds would be distributed by Look Good Feel Better, and would help add classes, train new facilitators and set up new class locations around the country.

Methven Community Board members were in the fortunate position at the close of the financial year to have money left in their annual $10,000 discretionary fund.

Chairman Dan McLaughlin announced allocation of remaining money from the fund at their meeting this week.

He said $1400 would go to the Methven Action Committee town lighting project. The LED rope lights decorating the town each winter had not lasted as well as they should, so the allocation of funds would be well worth it.

The money would go towards new strands of lights.

In addition $500 would be spent on a workshop for board members to learn about positive

community relations and promoting the board, covering topics such as social media etiquette.

Two Mount Hutt College students who had requested sponsorship for attending a Chinese leadership summit would receive $500 each.

Money spent previously throughout the year from the fund had included $3000 on the Methven Walkway, $2500 on the

board’s Ignite Change project, and $500 on Methven Food Forest.

McLaughlin said it had been a widespread mix of projects the money had been spent on.

Councillor Liz McMillan agreed, and said it would be a good idea to have spending listed in future, and then to also plan for the next year on what the $10,000 would be spent on.

Bain judge for Watson The latest attempt by Sounds killer Scott Watson to overturn his convictions for murdering Ben Smart and Olivia Hope will be overseen by the same judge who presided over David Bain’s retrial. Watson was jailed for life after he was found guilty of murdering Smart, 21, and Hope, 17, on New Year’s Day in 1998. The pair went missing after attending a New Year’s Eve party in the Marlborough Sounds. Watson has always denied murdering the pair and maintains he never even met them. The Ministry of Justice confirmed yesterday that retired High Court judge Sir Graham Panckhurst had been appointed to review the appeal application.

Suppression lifted One of the men alleged to have committed murder while robbing the Red Fox Tavern more than 30 years ago can now be named.

Name suppression has been lifted from Mark Joseph Hoggart, 58, of Tauranga. Hoggart was arrested last August and charged with the murder of publican Chris Bush, who was shot during the armed robbery of the Maramarua Tavern just before midnight on a Saturday in October 1987. He has also been charged with aggravated robbery.

A man has died in custody three days after being arrested and tasered multiple times following an attack on an elderly man. The man was filmed violently attacking an elderly person in Freemans Bay on Sunday outside a residential address. The male offender was observed kicking the victim in the head while he lay on the ground unconscious. They instructed that the offender move away before he refused and moved towards them.

Auckland City District Commander Superintendent Karyn Malthus said the officers were forced to taser the man multiple times. The man was taken to the Auckland Police Custody Unit in an agitated state.

His condition began to deteriorate while in custody and police were required to perform CPR until an ambulance arrived. He was taken to hospital and died yesterday.

Trailblazer Clemens to relive her glory days

Thirty-seven years ago Denise Clemens was the first woman to compete in the grand final of the New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year competition and later this week she will get to relive some of that glory.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the competition and as part of the celebrations there is a special dinner in Invercargill today for everyone associated with the grand finals over the years – including former comperes Bob Parker and Jim Hopkins.

Clemens competed in the grand final in 1981, the first year the event was televised.

At the time she was living in North Otago and tried to win the regional final two or three times before being successful and booking her place in that year’s grand final in Auckland.

Clemens, these days living in

Dromore, said she was always proud that she reached the grand final and that she was the first woman to do so, although she remembers little of the occasion today. She did not win, although she wasn’t last either.

From what Clemens can remember the event was more knowledge-based than what it is today, which involves more practical challenges.

She is looking forward to the celebration dinner and catching up with other former finalists, some of who will also be from Mid Canterbury.

While she is in Invercargill she hopes to get along and support Ashburton College students Harriet Stock and Alex Jones, who will be competing in the final of the TeenAg contest, and Tim Connelly-Whyte, Austin Watson and Henry Gray from Ashburton Intermediate School, who will compete in the AgriKids final.

Youngsters competing in national finals

It will be a big day tomorrow for Ashburton College students Harriet Stock and Alex Jones, as they compete in the national final for the New Zealand Young Farmers TeenAg competition.

Held in conjunction with the Young Farmer of the Year grand final, which this year is being held in Invercargill, the TeenAg final brings together winners and placegetters from regional competitions held all around the country.

It’s the first time Harriet and Alex have reached the national final, and they’ve been working hard recently to give themselves the best possible chance of success in Invercargill.

Both of them are from farms,

Alex living on a sheep, crop and winter grazing operation near Ealing, and Harriet a dairy farm near Hinds.

They said that a farming background was a definite advantage, although they each have different strengths.

Alex said he was better at the physical aspects of the competition, while Harriet is stronger at the numerical and theory side.

Although they are looking forward to the experience, the pair are also nervous as they don’t know exactly what to expect.

What they do know is they will have to complete a one hour exam and give a speech before undertaking a series of seven modules that will test their knowledge and expertise in a wide range of areas includ-

ing nutrient retention against leaching, health and safety, tractor driving, management practices that influence water quality, sheep judging and meat and wool breeds.

They will also have to perform two tasks on a farmlet.

The top five teams will then go into a “face-off” quiz, which will be made up of agriculture and general knowledge questions.

Also being held in Invercargill tomorrow is the AgriKidsNZ national final.

A team from Mt Somers Springburn School, made up of Lachlan Rooney, Ruby Giera and Annabel Harmer, and another from Ashburton Intermediate School, featuring Tim ConnellyWhyte, Austin Watson and Henry Gray, both qualified for the final.

Denise Clemens won the North Otago regional final of the New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year competition in 1981 to earn the right to compete in the grand final that year.

Bad birds, bad birds, whatcha gonna do?

The days of fast food and easy living are likely over for the bad birds of the Ashburton River, the southern black-backed gull.

The adult gulls grow up to 1.4kg and eat the eggs of more delicate and endangered real estate rivals.

They are feathered bullies who dunk small chicks of other birds in the river and swallow them whole.

But their rule may be coming to an end as Environment Canterbury looks at the effectiveness and goals of its black-backed gull strategy around the region.

There are at least 60,000 gulls in Canterbury, with at least 5000 on the Ashburton River. The growing numbers have people concerned – from professional animal control to farmers and conservationists.

The black-backed gulls are also the cause of E.coli in the river and spread diseases, including campylobacter and salmonella.

Bird strike is also a problem at airports and they are known to pick the eyes from lambs or cast ewes.

They have colonies in Canterbury’s braided rivers and return there in the evening after a day of foraging up to 20km. For food closer to home, they raid the nests of threatened species like the

black-billed gull, wrybill, blackfronted tern and banded dotterel and swallow both eggs and chicks whole.

A group of Mid Canterbury people with a common dislike for the gulls met ECan representatives this week to share their thoughts on the birds with the authors of the planned gull strategy. They

included farmers, fishermen, conservationists, bird experts and four-wheel drivers.

They agreed the gulls were intelligent, beautiful and adaptable, but pests because of their sheer numbers.

Wildlife Management International Limited’s Mike Bell said the average lifespan of black-backed

gulls was 20 years, with the oldest known bird living for 27 years.

They took four years to develop from brown chicks into black and white adult birds weighing up to 1.4kg.

Special cameras on riverbeds have documented the gulls’ predatory nature.

They were one of the few na-

tive birds that had adapted well to land-use changes, foraging on pasture and in rubbish tips and offal.

Bell said poison was just one method of controlling numbers, if people wanted higher numbers culled.

This was usually mixed with margarine and spread on bread that was fed to the gulls; it is a carefully controlled and highly effective way to cull, with birds fed non-toxic bread for several days before the poisoning day. It is rare to find any bait after their feeding frenzies and the dead birds are collected after a week. The drug used is a fast-acting narcotic, similar to sleeping pills.

Rakaia angler Martin Baker said he had seen gulls pluck chicks off other birds from the river and their numbers had grown too large.

Forest and Bird’s Edith Smith said it would make sense to target large colonies close to known nesting areas of the endangered birds. The gulls needed to be controlled, rather than wiped out.

Need another wheelie bin?

Residents and businesses that have more rubbish and recycling than the kerbside collection wheelie bins can handle each week can now pay for additional bins to help meet their needs.

Earlier this week, the Ashburton District Council made additional red rubbish and yellow recycling wheelie bins available, which are charged to the user, rather than through rates.

The additional bins do not replace the wheelie bins and crates already provided through rates, but are an extra service.

Chairman of service delivery, councillor Stuart Wilson, said the current service has already seen more recyclable materials diverted from landfill into recycling – an increase of 32 per cent per household, however, some larger households and businesses are struggling to keep their waste and recycling within the service’s limits.

“We know that most people are happy with the current service and this was demonstrated in the annual residents’ survey.

“The additional bins will provide an alternative for people who are otherwise

making trips to the resource recovery parks with their rubbish and recycling that doesn’t fit into the current service each week.

“We are pleased to make this option available to help meet our community’s needs.”

The additional rubbish bins are available in three sizes; 80 litres, 120 litres and 240 litres; while 240 litre recycling bins are also available. Each bin has an annual collection fee – based on its size – that will be charged to the user.

Trapped boys healthy, joking The Thai soccer teammates stranded more than a week in a partly flooded cave said they were healthy on a video released yesterday, as heavy rains forecast for later this week could complicate plans to safely extract them.

The 12 boys and their coach are seen sitting with Thai navy SEALs in the dark cave with their visibly skinny faces illuminated by the beam of a flashlight. The boys, many wrapped in foil warming blankets, take turns introducing themselves, folding their hands together in a traditional greeting and saying their names and that they are healthy.

The video lasting about a minute was posted on the navy SEAL Facebook page yesterday morning. The navy later released two more videos of the boys.

The boys, aged 11-16, and their 25-year-old coach disappeared after they went exploring in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in northern Chiang Rai province after a soccer game June 23.

The teammates, who were trapped inside when heavy rains flooded the cave, were found by rescue divers late Monday night during a desperate search that drew assistance from experts around the globe.

In all of the videos the boys have appeared in good spirits. In the most recent videos a navy SEAL is shown treating minor cuts on the feet and legs of the boys with antibiotic ointment. Several of the boys

are seen smiling as they interact with the navy SEAL, who cracks jokes.

SEAL commander Rear Admiral Arpakorn Yookongkaew said there was no rush to bring the group out of the cave, since they’re safe where they are. The current flooding situation means the boys would have to dive, which rescue experts have said could be extremely dangerous.

While efforts to pump out floodwaters are continuing, some Thai officials have indicated that heavy rains fore-

cast for this weekend could force them to decide the boys should swim and dive out using the same complicated route of narrow passageways through which their rescuers entered.

Chiang Rai provincial Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said yesterday that the boys have been practising wearing diving masks and breathing, but he doesn’t believe they have attempted any practice dives.

He said it is unknown when an extraction could be attempted.

PM calls on convicted archbishop to resign Australia’s prime minister on Wednesday called on an Australian archbishop to resign after becoming the most senior Roman Catholic cleric to be convicted of covering up child sex abuse.

Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson was sentenced in a Newcastle court on Tuesday to 12 months in detention for failing to report to police the repeated abuse of two altar boys by a paedophile priest in the Hunter Valley region north of Sydney during the 1970s.

Wilson was once Australia’s highest-ranking archbishop as president of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.

He remains free on bail and will return to court next month to find our whether he will serve his sentence in prison or at his sister’s house in home detention. He must serve a minimum six months before becoming eligible for parole.

Two critical in UK near poisoned spy town A major incident has been declared in the English county of Wiltshire after it was suspected that two people left fighting for their lives might have been exposed to an “unknown substance”.

The man and woman, both in their 40s, were found unconscious at a property in Amesbury – close to Salisbury,

where former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and daughter Yulia were poisoned by a suspected military nerve agent in March.

Wiltshire Police initially thought the pair’s collapse on Saturday was drugs-related, but have since said it is suspected they “might have been exposed to an unknown substance”.

Detectives are “open-minded” as to the cause and further tests are being carried out.

The man and woman are in a critical condition at Salisbury District Hospital, which is where the Skripals were treated after their poisoning earlier this year.

Several places in the Amesbury and Salisbury area – in-

cluding Amesbury Baptist Church – that are believed to be areas the pair visited before they fell ill were cordoned off while authorities investigate.

Public Health England (PHE) said it did not believe there to be a “significant health risk” to the wider public, although its advice was being continually assessed.

It’s been revealed who will play Goose’s son in the Top Gun sequel. Miles Teller, who has starred in Whiplash, War Dogs and Fantastic Four, has landed the coveted role in Top Gun: Maverick which is due to be released in July 2019. Teller reportedly beat out X-Men star Nicholas Hoult and Scream Queens star Glen Powell for the role, with the latter joking about the casting news on Twitter. “I’m taking down all the Tom Cruise posters in my bedroom,” Powell tweeted. “Maybe, I’ll leave one. Black Keys rocker dead at 41 Musician, singer-songwriter and producer Richard Swift, who has been in bands such as The Shins, The Arcs and The Black Keys, has died. He was 41. A representative for Swift said he died on Tuesday in Tacoma, Washington.

A GoFundMe account for Swift set up earlier in June said he was hospitalised due to a serious medical condition. The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney said in a post on their Facebook page that Swift was “one of the most talented musicians we have ever worked with”. Swift released his own albums as well, but was a valued studio producer and musician for many rock bands.

Appearing at Chicago Comic-Con, 13-year-old Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, was asked by a fan what had happened to the dog, which had appeared in season one but not season two. “I think he died, didn’t he? He did — oh!” Schnapp answered, appearing to realise his mistake and cover his mouth. Realising the metaphorical cat was well and truly out of the bag, the teenager continued: “I’m sure you can tell, I guess. In this season there’s like a grave for him that you see.”

When Fonterra and Greenpeace agree I

never thought I’d see the day when Fonterra and Greenpeace agreed on the effect dairying was having on a particular environment – but it happened this week.

More than 40 Greenpeace activists protested at the site of a proposed dairy development at Simons Pass near Lake Pukaki on Monday, which led to 12 of them being arrested.

However, they didn’t mind that given the media attention it drew to their opposition to dairy expansion in the Mackenzie Basin.

The activists locked themselves to construction machinery being

used to excavate tussock land for an irrigation pipeline to serve the dairy conversion, stopping construction for nine hours.

Speaking about the protest, Greenpeace sustainable agriculture campaigner, Gen Toop, said the iconic and fragile area was no place for cows.

“For the sake of the fragile Mackenzie and our rivers, industrial dairy expansion has to stop. A line is being crossed here in the Mackenzie. If this precious and unique area can be converted into an industrial dairy operation, nothing is safe,” she said.

And it seems Fonterra agrees.

Chief operating officer Farm Source, Miles Hurrell, said the co-op had been saying for a while now that its strong preference was for no further expansion in the Mackenzie Basin “because we’re concerned it will have a negative impact on the region’s sensitive environment”.

However, Hurrell noted that under the current Dairy Industry Restructuring Act, Fonterra is required to accept applications to supply it from farms that are within its collection zone, although before it picks up milk, the farms would need to have all required environmental consents.

Which in this case, it does.

However, if the nation’s dairy giant is prepared to publically state that enough is enough in that particular part of the country, with any more putting the environment at risk, then surely that’s got to mean something.

I fully appreciate that rules are

rules and the farm’s developers have met all the necessary resource requirements, so as long as they comply with the conditions of their consent, there’s not much that can be done.

Dairy intensification in the Mackenzie has been the subject of debate for many years now and you would have to think that any new developments will struggle to get off the ground.

It’s a stunning landscape and special environment in that part of the country and one that we should value.

And if that means no more dairy farms there, then so be it.

The swinging 70s – AshVegas style I

f you have enough miles on the clock, take a look at your old photos from the 1970s and chances are you’ll think – what the hell were we all thinking?

It was the decade of excess, flamboyance, cutting loose mother goose and a party that ran for 10 years.

It was the age of deeply disappointing your parents while pushing new boundaries and, in turn, watching with disbelief as they themselves eventually embraced that change.

Ashburton came alive on Friday nights for late night shopping.

The town buzzed as people made it “the big night out”. It was a chance to meet up with others, the weekly late-night rendezvous took on a buzz all of its own as the sun set and the lights came on. It really was something.

There were no shops open at all on weekends, except dairies and petrol stations. So Friday night was the biggie.

I used to work after school and late nights at Hays and it was while there one Friday evening, I spotted something new I just had to have.

A pair of flared purple trousers.

The old man spotted me trying these on and he completely lost his mind.

There ensued a fairly robust discussion which I must have somehow won because I certainly remember going home with them and they loitered in the general area of the closet at home for a good number of years.

Between the purple flares and the length of my hair, every inch was a hard-fought battle.

The great irony is that by the 90s, he had a helluva lot longer hair than me! It isn’t easy setting a trend. Boldly going where your parents have never been before.

The passage of time tends to filter out all the shortcomings of those days and instead we recollect people, places and events with the warm fondness of nostalgia.

If you don’t think Ashburton was vastly different back then, have I got news for you.

news and occasional shows, the studio sets of which looked like the first effort of set builders for the Windwhistle Amateur Theatrical and Dramatic Society.

Compared to today, the presenters’ deliveries were wooden, staid and soul-less and the whole thing came to you in glorious black and white via a 25-foot aerial in your backyard.

They were so high, in fact, that the guy wires required to keep the monstrosity erect were often tethered by friendly arrangement to your next door neighbour’s fence.

Colour TV arrived in ’74 and suddenly everything was vivid, bright and alive.

An enterprising guy named Peter Thompson opened the Aquarius Nightclub in a now long-gone old ANZ bank building on Tancred Street.

I close my eyes and can still see that beautiful old building with its tall roman columns either side of the entrance and the pulsing coloured lights flashing behind the frosted windows with sounds spilling out from the John Byrne Disco inside.

Of course in those days of the trust-licensing monopoly, it was a soft drink-only affair, although I’m sure plenty of the hard stuff made its way inside.

Sure you could call someone back then, but it had to be from a red phonebox down the street to the house of the other person where a phone probably hung on the wall or on its own special wee table.

It was attached to the wall with a cord and, chances were, your recipient’s mother answered first.

In the 70s bars, pubs and halls all over the district rang out with live music at weekends provided by a good number of local working bands.

Solo and duo acts weren’t really a thing then. If your daughter was getting married or having a 21st, you could choose from several popular local acts featur-

It didn’t stop. The party was in full swing.

The Radiant Hall on Wills Street morphed into the Martingale Mews under the Redmond family’s ownership and once it had received the Barry Redmond touch, gave great service for many years as a good sized venue for fairly major functions. The stories from that hall over time are legend. For so many of us it is deep in our DNA. Up around the corner on East Street in Saunders Buildings where the Countdown carpark is now, the Malibu Steakhouse had a reputation for a great steak of consistent quality. It was a major haunt for those seeking a decent feed.

The Ashburton Licensing Trust-run Coach Wheels Restaurant upstairs in the Somerset was also a solid pick, with the adjacent themed Longbeach Bar a popular choice for a tucked away whistle-wetting rendezvous.

Warner Harris had all the latest 45s to add to your record collection and stores like Denim Den and Fab 40 had the threads to get you noticed.

Saturday Night Fever hit the Regent Theatre and it was the only way to see it.

Videos were still several years away from making their debut.

You could capture all this local flavour with your camera but you had to choose your shots wisely so as not to waste the film, and then wait nervously to pick up your developed film and prints up from Aytons or Binsteds to see if there was anything worthwhile.

As the decade closed, cordless cellphones, videos, DVDs, internet, smart devices and McDonalds were the stuff of an unknown and unforeseen future.

But the party had been long and the afterglow was pretty

Let’s hope unnecessary rules aren’t adopted A

nimal welfare hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons late last week, with video footage from hidden cameras in a cow shed exposing a Northland sharemilker hitting cows in his care with what looks like a metal bar.

Disgusting and cruel pretty much sums it up.

Unfortunately, it took away the focus from what farmers should have been thinking about at the time – the release last Friday of the Government’s Framework for Action on Animal Welfare.

The result of a hui held in Auckland about a month ago and released by Associate Agriculture Minister Meka Whaitiri, the first cabinet minister with a dedicated animal welfare role, the framework “signals the creation of an independent future-thinking voice on animal welfare, more inclusive decision-making and a strengthened, more effectively monitored codes of welfare system”, Whaitiri says.

Which on the face of it all sounds pretty laudable.

Farmers and people in the industry will get to have their say, along with “campaign advocates”, whatever that means, before the framework goes to cabinet for approval.

What worries me is the Northland sharemilker’s behaviour will be used as a reason for new and unnecessary rules and regulations, backed by an argument of “the evidence shows you can’t be trusted”. By the way those last words are mine, not Whaitiri’s.

No-one is saying that there’s not the odd person out there working on a farm who shouldn’t be let anywhere near animals, particularly unsupervised.

But the vast majority of farmers and those who work for them have the greatest respect for their stock and the last thing they want to see is them being mistreated.

They get into farming because they like working with animals, not because they want the chance to treat them poorly.

Then there’s the fact they deal with those animals regularly, sometimes daily, depending on the type of farming operation and that farmers rely on their stock for their livelihoods, so they want to look after them while they are in their

care, not hurt them.

So I’m just a little concerned that there will be people lining up to jump on an unnecessary bandwagon.

There are already calls for cameras to be installed in every cow shed around the country.

Who is paying for those and how are they going to be monitored?

That’s punishing the majority for the actions of a few.

There’s also been calls for the creation of a commissioner for animal welfare and the removal of MPI from its role in policing this area, because it’s a double standard, given the ministry’s role in ensuring the ongoing importance of our primary industry exports.

I don’t think a commissioner is necessary and the politicising of that sort of appointment is almost a given, while I also don’t buy the double-standard argument, as our farm-based exports will increasingly depend on our global reputation, which includes strong animal welfare standards.

However, while I believe our animal welfare laws are efficient and were updated only a year or so ago, the resources for enforcing them could do with beefing up.

I’m not sure of the exact number, but I’m pretty sure MPI only has around 20 inspectors working in this area, which, despite the ministry actively adopting a tougher stance in recent years by taking those who breach codes of practice to court, is plainly not enough.

Whatever happens with the framework, New Zealand relies on its good reputation for animal welfare to access a range of export markets.

That’s not something we can afford to lose.

Deer farmer wins trans-Tasman award An increased focus on production analysis has paid off for South Canterbury farmer Joshua Brook, winner of the Rabobank Farm Management Project award for 2018 and the $2000 prize that comes with it.

Brook, a partner and manager of Rupert Red Deer, is a graduate of the 2017 Rabobank Farm Managers Programme (FMP), which caters for progressive young farmers from a range of agricultural sectors from across Australia and New Zealand, providing the opportunity to develop and enhance their business management skills.

He was shortlisted to present his project at this year’s programme, highlighting the changes he had made to his business as a result of attending the programme.

Rabobank CEO Todd Charteris said Brook had applied the lessons from the programme into his business and was seeing tangible results.

“Through the process of completing the project, Josh really put himself and his business under the microscope which has given him a clear plan of how he can improve efficiency and further grow the business,” Charteris said.

“The programme develops the operational and strategic business skills of young farmers through a

mixture of real-life case studies and management theories. The management project is undertaken in the 12 months following the programme and gives graduates the perfect opportunity to immediately put the lessons from the course into action in their own business.”

Brook and his wife Kiri are responsible for Rupert Red Deer, a 324-hectare stud stock and velvet

operation located on two properties in Peel Forest, South Canterbury.

Brook said his attendance at the FMP in mid-2017 had “lit a fire under him” and, following his return from the course, he and Kiri decided to develop a business plan across a range of focus areas that included both short and long-term goals.

“One of the outcomes of devel-

oping the business plan was to start our own stud brand – Rupert Red Deer – selling our top genetics as sire animals and selling our surplus young stock,” he said.

“Having our first sale did two things – it increased our profit on selling our surplus stock and opened our eyes to what our stock were potentially worth.”

Brook said this first sale, along with a presentation at the FMP

from Paul Bennett, the director of Tasmania-based Ashgrove Cheese, were the catalyst for a thorough look at the farm’s existing production.

“I really enjoyed Paul’s presentation at the course on the expansion of Ashgrove Cheese and one of the key points he made was that it was essential to understand the numbers within your business.

I came away from his presentation thinking we needed to place a much greater emphasis on this within our own business,” he said.

“Through the use of computerbased technology we were able to strip out the data in our business and analyse our production dollar-by-dollar, cent-by-cent and kilo-by-kilo.”

Brook said while a significant component of his management project was focused on increasing farm profit, the business plan he and his wife developed also covered off on-farm health and safety, environmental sustainability and personal health, with objectives and targets set for each of these areas.

KiwiBuild clamour: 6000 sign up The Government has already received 5950 registrations of interest from Kiwis eager to gain access to affordable housing through the KiwiBuild programme.

The figure quickly reached 1000 applications yesterday morning and steadily increased over the course of the day to hit 5950 by 4.45pm. At one point, 15 people were registering a minute.

This means there have already been more applications yesterday than the number of homes that would be completed in 2020.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford said yesterday 1000 KiwiBuild homes would be built in 2018/19, 5000 in 2019/20, 10,000 in 2020/21 and 12,000 a year average through to 2028.

Twyford also revealed the terms and conditions of the new scheme aimed to develop 50,000 new Auckland homes.

The eligibility criteria for KiwiBuild home buyers are: ■ First-home buyers or “second chancers”; ■ New Zealand citizens, permanent residents or those who ordinarily reside in New Zealand; ■ Intend to own, and live in it, for at least three years;

Income below $120,000 for sole purchasers and $180,000 for couples.

“People can check the eligibility criteria and will soon be able to pre-qualify for the first homes currently being constructed and the thousands more that will be built by KiwiBuild in the years ahead,” Twyford said.

Given the enormous interest in the programme, the Government will use a ballot to ensure fair distribution of the affordable housing as it is built.

Twyford said that KiwiBuild’s major challenges are “land availability, workforce constraints, consenting time frames, development and build times and growth capacity constraints”.

But he cited the Housing NZ Corp development at Auckland’s McLennan estate at Papakura as the first KiwiBuild success where the first 30 homes are being built and threebedroom places are being sold for around $579,000 each and we will have families moving in in October.

These families will have to hold their new homes for a minimum three years, although exemptions will be allowed in some circumstances, Twyford said.

NZ house values fall as agents keep sellers’ expectations in check Winter seems to have put a freeze on New Zealand home values with a dip in national prices coming after years of growth.

New Quotable Value data showed national home values dropped 0.3 per cent in the last three months, while the number of homes being listed for sale was also down, according to realestate.co.nz.

The market plateau had forced some real estate agents to gently massage the expectations of owners intent on making a tidy profit from the sale of their homes, QV general manager, David Nagel says.

“After a sustained period of national value growth, sellers can sometimes have an inflated – even

unrealistic – view of the value of their property,” he said.

“This is resulting in slower than usual average time to sell properties across some areas.”

Further signs of a national slowdown came from realestate.co.nz figures yesterday showing new property listings fell in 15 of the 19 regions in June, resulting in a 9.9 per cent drop compared to June last year.

Gisborne property listings were down 41.4 per cent, West Coast listings 25.8 per cent and the Wairarapa region down 27 per cent were the worst affected.

Yet despite last quarter’s slowdown, national prices still jumped 5.7 per cent when compared to June last year to hit an average val-

ue of $675,680, according to QV. In the Auckland region, home values climbed 0.8 per cent yearon-year, but fell 0.2 per cent in the last quarter from April 1 till June 30.

QV Auckland senior consultant James Steele said it was no surprise values had remained flat because tougher lending restrictions and new Government regulations had dampened investor demand.

“We’re continuing to see a high proportion of properties come to market as price by negotiation as opposed to auction,” he said.

“With less demand, sellers are adjusting expectations and are more open to negotiation in order to get their property sold.”

Third bank appoints female CEO TSB bank has appointed a new chief executive – the third bank to name a female boss in the last year.

Donna Cooper will take the top job at the New Zealand bank on July 23 taking over from interim managing director Murray Bain who will step back into a board role.

Bain had been temporarily managing the business since February when its long-serving CEO Kevin Murphy resigned.

Cooper who was previously the chief executive of The Warehouse Financial Services Group and worked for Baycorp and American Express before that, is the third woman to take over running a New Zealand bank this year.

Donna Cooper Bank of New Zealand boss Angela Mentis took on the top job in January while ASB chief executive Vittoria Shortt moved into the role in February.

Ashburton Golf Club I didn’t manage to get down to the course last Saturday to see all the matches, but I have heard some great games were played in wonderful conditions on the beautiful course. It would seem my tipping was once again four out of four, just a pity it was four losses. Some players just don’t seem to carry the favourite tag very well, and others then rise up to prove the tipster wrong. Maybe I should stop tipping and make it an even playing field. Hell no, suck it up buttercup, here we go.

Gordy had a great win over Charlie and Leaky snuck past Barry. Obviously two form players. Gordy will be giving about 4 or 5 shots and about 30 years to Ray, who knows matchplay inside out, and is the master at sledging.

Can Gordy keep Ray out of earshot? If so he has got a good chance, but if Ray eyes a chink in his mental fortitude he will jump in with both feet. Who to pick? Well after much deliberation, I can quite categorically state without reservation, that it is Ray’s game, no I mean Gordy, no, no Ray. In the other semi, somehow Ian got past Chris. I’m not sure if Chris turned up, but if he did and Ian won fair and square, then I humble myself and if I was wearing a hat I would take it off.

Now Ian faces young Braydon who turned over Brian. I know for fact that Ian was Allenton School principal, and I know Braydon is an Allenton lad, so I presume he attended school while Ian was working there. I believe Ian would have delivered unjustified punishments on young Braydon over the years.

I reckon Ian will try and intimidate the young lad by walking round the practise area, flexing his old whacking cane and swishing it around like Zorro, but the shy young lad is now a strapping young man, and he will snap the cane over his knee and hand down a thrashing of his own, all done and dusted in 14 holes.

In the plate we have two very different games. Two young pups will chase each other’s tails, and two mature stags will lock antlers. Sean and Dylan will have a great fun game, and the form book says that Dylan should edge it. Then Spud and Murray will play a cagey match, but I believe that this is Spud’s year. Have fun boys, enjoy the games, see you soon good golfing.

Ashburton U3A The topic Rising China: Partner, Rival or Adversary – The View from Beijing and the renowned author/speaker Professor Stephen Hoadley from The University of Auckland, brought forth the largest attendance to date. It did not disappoint with more questions afterwards than time for answers.

American born Dr Hoadley, Associate Professor of Political Studies at Auckland was welcomed by Anne Fleming.

From a Chinese perspective, China covers the world, some of it hostile. A very old country, China has been the centre of its world for more than two millennia, from the Xia dynasty 2070 BC and by the Han Dynasty 206 BC – AD 220 including parts of Vietnam and Korea.

Always known as great innovators, among other things the Chinese invented gun powder, silk weaving and embroidery, bronze casting, the magnet compass, standard weights and measures, ocean going ships, moveable type printing and literary publishing. There was an orderly, authorative government but no elections.

In the 1800s China fell on hard times when lessons were learned from The Century of Humiliation which saw China embark on a massive modernization of the military as an answer to the threat of Western powers and Japan and is determined to regain control over all historically Chinese territory:

Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and the South China Sea Islands. Some of this has already happened. China says Colonial injustices must be acknowledged and redressed interactionally.

When China sided with the Soviet Union there began an Us and Them relationship throughout the Cold War. The despotic and cruel time of Mao Tse Tung was a disaster for the country when millions died from disease and hunger. The middle classes were sent ‘down to the farms’ and out of the way, their education, expertise and experience lost.

Better times arrived with Deng Xioa Ping who brought reforms and ultimately economic success to the country.

By world standards China is still poor though there is now more emphasis on domestic consumerism rather than exports. The Communist Party dominates. Churches are tolerated but keep a low profile.

Women and baby trafficking persists. Dissenters become political prisoners. The once enforced ‘one child’ policy led to female infanticide.

China claims offshore islands in both the East and South China Seas and is seen as becoming more aggressive with the risk of confrontation rising. With a now strong presence in the Pacific and Mandarin replacing English as the bridging language, there are many who are ‘jittery’ of the rapidly growing power of China.

However, President Xi Jinping has said that China will never seek to impose its will no matter how strong they become. If a trade war accelerates, stock markets could decline.

China is on the rise: ‘hegemony’ or ‘respect’ ‘threatening’ or ‘benign’ - ‘partner’ or ‘adversary’.

Every economic policy has losers as well as winners.

Edith Smith thanked Professor Hoadley for his excellent and stimulating presentation.

The next meeting on July 24 will feature speakers Kate Dewes and Robert Green on the topic Nuclear Weapons: UN Treaty or Prohibition at St. David’s Union Church, Allenton. Doors open at 9.30am.

Ashburton Woodworkers President, Bruce Ferriman welcomed 20 members to our June meeting. He mentioned that on the July 21 we have a demonstration by Chris Pouncy from Sorby Tools England.

He encouraged members to help themselves to several blocks of walnut wood and return to the next meeting with the walnut in another shape.

Chris Thompson demonstrated how to use the router safely and using ear muffs and safety goggles even if wearing glasses, fitting for a dust extractor pipe, a selection of push sticks to ensure fingers are kept clear from the spinning bits. Keeping router bits sharp, looking after them as they are expensive.

Chris demonstrated how his home made router operated and his ingenious ideas have enabled him to do remarkable work. Much discussion involved on his inventions and how he could perhaps improve on his table. His demonstration was a reminder that our club of woodworkers is not limited to woodturning. Thanks Chris.

Hinds Women’s Institute The Hinds Women’s Institute met for their June meeting at Val Goodridge’s home at Lake Hood for a Mid-Winter Christmas themed afternoon.

President Betty Wilson welcomed members to a Christmas decorated lounge. The Institute’s Ode and Aspirations were delivered, apologies accepted, and business attended to. Members were thanked for the floral posies delivered to Ward Six at the Hospital and arrangements were made for entries in the up-coming July Cup Day and Quizco.

Later in August we will host the Ashburton Blind Foundation to lunch and Fellowship.

We were then entertained by Coyla Chisnall and her wonderful collection of Christmas Santas. There was a Santa for just about every occasion – Santa on a motor bike, the Santa orchestra, the tipsy twins, numerous singing Santas and oh, so many more. An enjoyable collection which seemingly grows each year.

A delicious Christmas inspired afternoon tea was served upon a colourfully decorated dining table by hostess Val and her “little helpers”.

Plains Ladies Friendship Club Val Dellow welcomed a large gathering of members to our June meeting.

There were 13 apologies. Birthdays and Anniversaries were acknowledged and condolences expressed to those that had lost loved ones. Members were reminded of the Fabric and Craft Bazaar being held at the Sinclair Centre on July 7 and also reminded of our Birthday Lunch which will be held at the RSA rooms after our August Meeting. The next area meeting will be on 26th June. The South Island Fellowship Fun and Friendship Day will be in Christchurch September 21. The treasurer reported that most of the subs had been paid.

The film for the first Wednesday next month is ‘Tea with Dames’ and comes highly recommended.

A form was circulated for ideas for Speakers and Outings.

Our mini speaker was Elna Van Amersfoort who gave a very interesting talk, with the aid of a power point presentation, about her birth place South Africa.

She has been in New Zealand for nine years. Originally she lived in White River near Johannesberg, in the province of Gauteng, South Africa is bordered by both the cold Atlantic Ocean and the warm Indian Ocean. It is a beautiful country with many tourist attractions but it is also not an easy country to get to especially from New Zealand as there are no direct flight from here. Tourists have to go either via Australia or Singapore, Dubai or Hong Kong.

However the many attractions that South Africa has to offer are well worth the effort to get there.

Diverse cultures, wild life, beautiful plants and gardens and of course the National Parks and Game Reserves and Safari expeditions all add up to an exciting place to visit.

Elna’s favourite game park is Kruger National Park which she visited many times and where tourists are most likely to encounter the Big Five: Lion, Rhino, Buffalo, Elephant and Giraffe. Of course there are many other animals and much birdlife to see as well. Elna was thanked for her very interesting talk and the joined us for morning tea.

Our main speaker for the day was Coyla Chisnall, who through a chance encounter after dinner at a motel in Christchurch, started a new hobby collecting mechanical Santas. We were then shown 25 Santas which she has collected over the last 2-3 years.

There were Santas riding bicycles, Santas playing musical instruments: guitars, saxophones and drums. Singing Santas; singing Jingle bells, Santa

Claus is Coming, Jingle Bell Rock and Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer, various carols and Christmas music even in foreign language.

Dancing Santas doing the Twist and Square dancing and even parachute Santas to swing from the ceiling. Each new Santa produced laughter and merriment. We were then reminded that there are only six months to wait before we can all get into the Christmas Spirit again. Corla was thanked for her display and we were reminded about our birthday lunch in August.

RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed members on Thursday June 28. There was a good attendance on a lovely sunny afternoon. A special welcome was given to three new members: Nellie Burrows, Janet Smith and Lorna Wallace. Apologies were received.

With Hope, as usual playing the piano beautifully, the R.S.A. song was sung and happy birthday to one member.

Sympathy was given to anyone who has sadly lost a loved one. Sick members were wished a speedy recovery. The latest Bugle was handed out.

Member Elizabeth Davies displayed some of the porcelain dolls she has made. Elizabeth explained the making, firing, placing eyes, hair etc. And delicate painting of features. She made all the clothes, sewn, crocheted and knitted. Several dolls were winners in competitions. A truly fascinating hobby to have worked on over many years. Elizabeth was thanked for bringing some of her “family” along.

Members really appreciated seeing them.

Raffles were won by Adele Campbell and June Bain.

Target Shooting Mid Canterbury The last two championships of the Canterbury circuit were held at the weekend, Shania Harrison-Lee continued her good form to win the overall B grade championship. Those championships were also the final two qualifying events for selection in the South Island teams to compete against the North Island and selection to represent New Zealand. A number of our members will be keenly awaiting the announcement of teams due at the weekend.

I hope to be able to report a number of successes next week. Good luck to all of those nominated.

On the club scene this week Sandy Bennett showed a return to form with a couple of possible hundreds, while over at Phoenix a large number of personal bests gave a very clear indication that the coaches and club are doing something right. Aimee Harris has been trying to break the 90 barrier for some time and finally achieved it in spades, twice, earning her 95 badge in so doing.

Fiona McFall has been very consistent in producing scores in the 90s and along with Tim Ryan, Richard Pearce, Andrew McKenzie, Hiromi Horsley and Katie Ellis are forming a very solid senior section of the club.

Possibly the highlight of the week was the first training session held on Saturday afternoon of the Junior Training Initiative (JTI) where a group of promising juniors were afforded the opportunity to have 2 hours of concentrated, one on one, coaching. The improvement made was really something to see and the enthusiasm of all participants, including the coaches, guarantees continuation of this activity.

This weekend a team selected from the combined clubs will travel to Oamaru for a rep fixture with North Otago. Best wishes to those travelling.

Run and Walk Ashburton On Saturday June 30, five early bird runners enjoyed a mild -1 degree start with a 10km run down the river track. Coffee at Columbus Café after was appreciated.

The afternoon social meet had 12 walkers who did an 8.5 km block around Isleworth Settlement area. Three walkers did a slightly shorter distance out and back and two runners did a 12 km block. The weather was sunny without a breath of wind and it was worth taking a moment to enjoy the marvellous view of snow on the Alps.

Two members popped across the Tasman for the weekend to compete in the Gold Coast Half Marathon and 10km Races. Toresa Hooper ran her first half marathon in 1:57:08 and husband Eamon competed in the 10km race in 1:07:31. Congratulations to you both, an awesome effort to be proud of.

Acting President Pat O’Brien welcomed 12 Members and Lyn Oliver the Mid-South Canterbury Area Council Chair. After saying the Red Cross Principles members stood for a Minutes Silence for Moira Mackenzie who passed away in May. Moira was the Branch Patroness, Foundation member since 1965, Life member and dedicated active Red Cross member until recent months. Also to remember Lesley Sim another member who passed away last month.

General meeting recalled that members had attended World Red Cross Day held at Methven and the function for National Volunteer Week held at

Hotel Ashburton, hosted by Volunteering MidSouth Canterbury.

The knitting project saw 348 pairs of fingerless mittens distributed to New Entrant Classes in 14 Mid Canterbury Schools. Over the past four years 1591 pairs have been distributed. A discussion was held about the Psychological First Aid Course now available by New Zealand Red Cross and the possibility of one being held in Mid Canterbury.

Arrangements were made for the hosting of members of the Foundation of the Blind in September and final details for the Spring Raffle were determined. The General meeting closed and the Annual Meeting opened. Minutes were read and Acting President presented the Annual Report. Treas-

urer Audrey Bruce presented the Annual Balance Sheet. Lyn Oliver took the Chair for the election of Officers. Patroness – Mary Miles. President – Pat O’Brien. Vice President – Jill Bennett. Match Play/Stroke – Saturday June 30 Semi-finalists for the RSA Trophy were found on Saturday with two of the matches played being a one-sided affair, with the other two in stark contrast finishing on the 18th.

In the first set of matches unfortunately Richard Thompson’s game completely deserted him, not really firing a shot and going down to Paul Hefford at a canter 8 and 6.

Gordon Rennie found some top form against Pete Marshall, and this match was decided after 13 holes.

This was despite Goldie having the misfortune of his trundler collapsing as he attempted to cross the creek on the 1st hole, the result which saw his whole bag and clubs sinking to the bottom of the water hazard.

After some considerable effort the bag was retrieved, drained and returned to the trundler (water was still seen to be run from the bag 4 holes later!) and he continued on his winning way.

In the second set of matches Kevin Bishop got off to a flyer with a string of opening pars and the odd birdie thrown in, leaving Snow Pierce to battle to regain some ascendancy. This he did well (with the help of Bish, who’s front nine form somewhat deserted him on the back nine), but unfortunately Kev’s lead was too great and Snow fell at the final hurdle on the last.

Ross Preece took full advantage of his shots to finally overcome a valiant Terry Reynolds in a closely fought match all the way, but with Big Terry giving shots on the last two holes it was a bridge to far and he had to concede victory to a determined Ross, who drained a clutch 5-footer on the last to halve the hole and keep his 1 up advantage. Well done to all the winners.

Next week’s semi-finals will now see Gordon Rennie take on Paul Hefford and Kevin Bishop will play Ross Preece.

The balance of the field played the second round (best 3 of 4 rounds) of the Alan Teale Memorial Trophy.

Brent Kirdy followed up his strong form from last week to get one hand on the silverware with a nett 70 in the 0 -18 grade. Another good performance next week should put him in good shape to have the best three round total and lift the trophy. Time will tell!

Pete Nolan battled morning conditions to return the best score in the 19+ grade with a nett 70 also.

Double take for Celtic in new-look comp

The six teams who will fight it out for the title of Mid Canterbury’s best club netball team for 2018 have been decided.

Promotion/relegation matches were played on Tuesday night, with the big talking point of the night being the bottom side after round two of Mid Canterbury Netball’s ACL premier one competition, United A, losing their spot in the top grade thanks to a 3025 loss to the team that topped premier two, Celtic B. That means there will be two Celtic teams vying for the premier one title for the first time in the club’s history, and if Tuesday night’s win over United A is anything to go by, Celtic B could rattle a few cages in the top tier.

The line-up for the third and final round of the 2018 premier one competition has a very different look to it from round one of premier one. Only four of the six teams who started the season in premier one, are still there.

Automatic promotion/relegation at the end of round one saw Southern A drop down to premier two, and Mt Somers – a new team this year – made the step up from premier two to premier one.

The addition of Celtic B for the final round means there’s now two teams who started life in premier two this season, set to battle it out for the premier one title.

Those two teams have drawn each other in the first games of the final round, and just

who will come out on top is anyone’s guess.

When they met back in round one of premier two, Mt Somers came out on top by six.

Mt Somers have already had five games in the top grade under their belts, winning one and taking vital bonus points from two others, but Celtic B’s victory over United A on Tuesday night shows that they’re more than ready for the step up.

It’s their club mates Celtic A who are likely to be the biggest target for all teams in the final round though. Celtic A haven’t been beaten all season, but in the final two games of round two they were finally pushed – first

by United A, and then by Mt Somers.

They weren’t Celtic A’s best performances of the season by a long shot, but they will have given other teams a bit of confidence.

Mt Somers actually led Celtic A by one heading into the final quarter of their match last week, but the Celts came back.

Celtic A will be looking for a stronger start tonight when they face an injury-ravaged Ashburton College A side in the early match at 6.30pm, while the other game of the night will see Hampstead A take on Methven A. Both that game, and the one between Mt Somers and Celtic B, will be played at 7.30pm.

Down in premier two, United A will be looking to bounce back from their shock loss on Tuesday night against Ashburton College B, while Celtic C will take on Southern A. Methven B, who won their promotion/ relegation game to ensure they stayed in premier two, will take on Rakaia A.

AshColl sticks to winning script An 86-65 win over Ellesmere High School on Tuesday night was another step in the right direction for Ashburton College’s senior boys’ basketball team, according to their coach.

Playing at Leeston in Canterbury secondary school basketball’s Thomson Trophy division two competition, Ashburton College started with a zone press and attacked the Ellesmere guards with good results early.

But they soon started making some uncharacteristic errors and the effectiveness of the press waned, allowing Ellesmere to settle into their offence and bring their tall players into action.

But College’s zone defence worked hard, coach Brian Kerr said.

“The encouraging thing was that every time the ball was passed inside to the Ellesmere big men, the college defence was able to collapse back onto that player surrounding him and then applying immense pressure,” Kerr said.

College took a seven-point lead into the second quarter and continued to put pressure on, negating Ellesmere’s danger man and using their speed to get out to a 47-31 lead at halftime.

Ellesmere started the third quarter strongly though, as college’s intensity waned. But college’s bench players got that intensity back up and college led at three quarter time 70-56, with a strong finish seeing them take it out 86-65.

Kerr said it was a mixed game, with wonderful interplay between his players.

“Unfortunately, some of this good work was undone by stages of poor execution especially on offence.

“We probably missed a dozen easy layups which was both frustrating and unusual.

“Our break was also a little disjointed as our outlet passes lacked accuracy at times.”

Penuel Pantaleon was an absolute dynamo particularly on defence, Kerr said.

“He was into everything and created chaos for Ellesmere. He’s not a big guy but his defensive rebounding was great.”

Combining with Fotu Hala (who top scored with 20 points) and Harry Jackson (13 points) off the bench, they did a good job on the defensive boards, while Marc Juntilla (17 points) also had another strong game.

“I thought Abel Wilson (12 points) had a good all round game and produced some great drives to the basket. He just seemed to score when we were a little devoid of ideas on offence.”

Meanwhile, in the girls’ Whelan Trophy top division, Ashburton College played what coach Mark Douglas said was their best game of the season, but lost.

They went down 84-61 to top seeds St Andrew’s.

“We competed for the whole 40 minutes,” Douglas said.

“With eight remaining fully fit players they all played as good as I’ve seen them play this season.

“With a couple of weeks to refresh and rest injuries before we kick into the back half of the season there is optimism for the next round.”

Douglas said his side needed to keep building with South Islands looming at the start of September.

Ashburton multisporter Matthew Clough had two gold medals in his sights when he boarded a plane bound for Denmark this week.

His destination was the ITU World Multisport Championships where he will face a gruelling two-race schedule, but he was ready and hopeful of what he could achieve in his third shot at becoming the world’s best in his age group.

In 2016 at the world championships in Mexico the 17-yearold Ashburton College Year 13 student was third in the aquathlon, and a year later in Canada he was second. From there, there is only one way to go, and that is first.

An aquathlon is a 1km open water swim and a 5km run, but this year he has added a second race to his itinerary and it is one he can’t wait to line up for.

Clough wanted to give the cross triathlon a go at last year’s world champs, but wasn’t old enough. This year he is old enough though and he will be one of eight athletes lining up at the start line in the 18-19 year old age group.

A cross triathlon is effectively a cross country triathlon. It is a 1km open water swim, a 28km mountain bike ride and a 10km run, and it is actually his favoured event.

“I’m really aiming for a lot. It’s been my goal for a while to be world champion in my age group and now I’m doing that cross tri too and I can’t think of anything better than coming back with two gold medals,” Clough said.

He had no goals in terms of times because speed could be dictated by the conditions on the day.

“I sort of have this thing where no matter where I’ve placed, if I know I’ve done everything I can and have given it 100 per cent, I’ve pretty much won,” Clough said.

Ashburton 17-year-old Matt Clough is winging his way to Denmark this week, for the ITU World Multisport Championships.

A competitive swimmer growing up, it was in the pool where Clough claimed his first national titles and medals.

“I was swimming and swimming and swimming and I just sort of got sick of swimming every single day, and thought I needed to find something else,” Clough said.

After reading a story about Methven multisporter Braden Currie, Clough decided multisport was that something else.

Currie – a past Coast to Coast winner and world beater in multisport – became his idol.

“I love Braden and the things he’s doing and the way he portrays himself as an athlete,” Clough said.

But he doesn’t want to be like him, he has dreams of one day being even better than his idol.

He has worked hard on every aspect of his sport. Swimming and running came naturally, and his biking legs have continued to improve with time.

“My coach tells me if anyone asks me what my best discipline

is, tell them it’s triathlon. You can’t afford to have a bad leg,” Clough said.

A bad leg in Denmark could the difference between finishing on the podium, and not, and with a big few months on the world stage ahead of him, Clough is hoping to start the way he hopes to continue.

Clough will set sail again in October, this time bound for Maui, Hawaii, for the World Xterra Championships, and before that he’ll attend Xterra Townsville in Australia to help him acclimatise to the warmer conditions.

Warriors seek answers

Trio called up for Junior Knights camp Three young Ashburton rugby players will next week head to Christchurch for a Crusaders Junior Knights rugby development camp.

Ashburton College student Elama Touli didn’t make the first cut but had been selected in the Crusaders Junior Knights wider training group, as had a former Ashburton College player – Liam McCormack – who is now playing for St Andrew’s College.

volved in the camp.

One Ashburton player did make the first cut though and that is another former Ashburton College player, also now playing for St Andrew’s, Josh Ree. Touli was the only player from the Mid Canterbury Combined side who will feature in the camp.

The Crusaders Junior Knights rugby development camp will be held in Christchurch next week, focusing on educating young players on the physical

and mental skills required to perform at the top level.

A total of 70 players have been selected for the camp where they will learn from world class coaching and development staff.

A squad of 25 will then be selected to travel to Hamilton to play the Chiefs under 18 team on July 14.

A development team will also be selected to play a Canterbury Invitational XV on July 12.

Before the camp though, there’s another round of the

Crusaders region’s UC Championship to be played, with Touli and his Mid Canterbury Combined side set to go searching for their first win of the competition against Rangiora High School in Methven on Saturday at midday.

Ree and McCormack’s St Andrew’s side meanwhile face a big clash at Christchurch Boys’ School (CBHS) at 2.45pm on Saturday.

CHBS are currently top of the table with St Andrew’s back in sixth.

The Warriors are seeking answers from the NRL after a number of refereeing decisions proved costly in Friday’s controversial 18-15 defeat to Cronulla at Mt Smart Stadium. A try to Sharks wing Edrick Lee off a forward pass in the 77th minute robbed the Warriors of a one-point victory with the result seeing them drop out of the top four to leave them fifth on the premiership ladder.

The incident came after several baffling calls went against the home side as the Warriors found themselves on the wrong end of a lopsided 10-5 penalty count that helped the visitors come back from 0-12 down to win. The club has expressed its concerns.

Read set to start for Crusaders The Crusaders cemented their place at the top of the Super Rugby table last week without even having to play a match, and they’re now even stronger with the return of All Blacks captain Kieran Read.

After looking good in a 40 minute run out for Counties Manukau last week, Read has been placed straight back into the starting lineup by Crusaders coach Scott Robertson for their first game since the international rugby break against the Highlanders on Friday.

For Read, who underwent spinal surgery in December, it will be his first Super Rugby appearance of the season, and the All Black No. 8 said he was excited to get back out on the field for the Crusaders.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Read.

“I’ve obviously gotta keep the standard up cause they’ve been going pretty good. “[I’m] 100 per cent ready to go. Probably won’t be doing 80 [minutes] but I’m ready to get the game started.”

Read showed no signs of discomfort playing for Counties Manukau last week but admitted after the match that it will take time to get back to his best.

The 32-year-old says getting the start on Friday will be a good opportunity to work towards getting back to full fitness.

“I’m not [back] in terms of match fitness, a wee way off that. But I think starting, you get the opportunity to just empty the tank.

“In terms of the back it actually feels really good. It’s a bonus … [there’s] no pain at all. It’s all good.

“It was actually really good to get that hit out last week and go for it 100 per cent. The back’s not the issue, it’s gonna be all the other things.”

Joining Read in the Crusaders team for Friday’s southern derby are 10 All Blacks who will all be returning to Super Rugby action after sweeping France in their threegame series.

The Crusaders will be facing a Highlanders side who are coming off a 45-22 loss to the Chiefs, something Read says they won’t be taking lightly.

“They will be hurting and we’re expecting a real big backlash from them from last week.

“It’s always a great Southern derby so I’m looking forward to it.”

United A have been sent packing from Mid Canterbury Netball’s top flight for the first time in decades thanks to a 30-25 loss to Celtic B in a promotion/relegation match on Tuesday night.

The result meant there would be two Celtic teams in the third and final round of the ACL premier one competition this season – the first time the Celtic Netball Club has ever had two teams in the top grade at the same time.

Even the United A players and coach, despite their devastation at the loss, said Celtic B deserved the win.

“We were outplayed again, just like with Methven last week, we were beaten by a better team,” United A coach Claire Tappin said.

Both sides had everything to play for in the match, and it showed from the outset. United A got out to an early 5-1 lead in the physical clash, but Celtic B fought back to trail by just two at quarter time, 8-6.

For United their proud history in premier one was on the line – before the match Tappin said she’d been involved with the club’s A team since 1999 and they had never not featured in the top grade since then.

For Celtic B, promotion was something that had been a goal since day one this season, and they narrowly missed out on the automatic promotion spot after round one. That spot went to Mt Somers, who did just enough to avoid the promotion/relegation game that awaited the top team in

premier two and the bottom side in premier one at the end of the second round of competition.

Once they got back within striking distance, Celtic B knew all they had to do was win their pass and nab the odd turnover and they were in with a real shot of promotion.

But they did better than that, forcing numerous turnovers and putting United A’s shooters under immense pressure. They contested everything, and proved they were more than up to the task.

By the mid-way point, Celtic B had hit the lead, up 14-12 at half time, and a tight third quarter where United A clawed one back to trail by just one by three-quarter time set up a dramatic final quarter.

sights, Celtic B didn’t let up. United A were having to push hard and as a result, errors were made, and Celtic B pounced.

With two minutes to go, and Celtic B ahead by five, United A knew the game was gone and they were on the way down to premier two.

Nothing could wipe the smiles off the faces of the Celtic B players and their coaches Di Ness and Marie Kennedy when the final whistle blew, but it was a different story on the United A bench.

United A coach Tappin was in total disbelief straight after the game, but she was full of praise for Celtic B. She said Barrine Ross was a stand out for Celtic B at goal defence, taking a lot of turnover ball and making life incredibly difficult for United A’s shooters, while

they also picked up a lot of ball through the mid-court.

“Nobody for United had a terrible game, but nobody had a great game. Nobody stepped up when they needed to,” Tappin said.

Ness and Kennedy said premier one had been their goal from the start of the season and they were incredibly proud of their girls.

“They listened to us (on Tuesday night) and they did everything we asked of them,” Kennedy said.

“We had nothing to lose so we just said go out and play at 110 per cent and have fun, leave it all on the court, and that’s what they did.”

Meanwhile, the team that had finished bottom in premier two earned the right to stay in premier two with a narrow 31-29 win over Allenton A.
