The Ashburton District Council followed the protocols outlined in its water safety plan for Methven when the supply treatment failed, assets manager Andrew Guthrie said.

The actions for inadequate disinfection in the plan are: Inspect treatment plant to identify cause of contamination and rectify problem as quickly as possible/Assess the situation and consider issuing a precautionary boil water notice if deemed

appropriate/Notify Drinking Water Assessor (DWA) of situation and actions taken/Consider provision of emergency treatment equipment or alternative water supply (eg. tankers)/Disinfect contaminated reservoirs and flush mains/ Keep customers informed and advise once regular service is restored.

“As advised previously, council followed the protocols all outlined in the water safety plan,” Guthrie said in an emailed response to the Guardian.

He continued: “The critical issue is to be aware it was

not from a point of contaminated water, as the testing being undertaken, in consultation with the DWA, was being done to find any evidence of contamination.

The advice from CPH was to issue a precautionary boil water notice if we could not prove the water was clean and safe to drink, which is exactly what the testing was trying to determine.”

“This incident has presented council with the opportunity to address some key issues that have arisen as a result, including investigating why the equipment failure did not generate an alarm to our contractor, as well as improving our notification systems in the future.

“We still want to acknowledge the Methven community were very proactive in working together to ensure the wider community was informed through their existing networks. This will be factored into the Methven Community Emergency Management Plan and we hope to provide some learnings from this situation into that.

“In due course there will be a report to our council about this incident and the learnings from it.”

All of this was done in consultation with the DWA, and as there was no indication of contamination, there was no need for actions such as tankers or emergency treatment equipment because the plant was fully operational.

The source water for Methven is of a very high standard and the reservoir was full of previously treated water.

24 hours untreated?

Methven residents may have been exposed to inadequately treated water for as long as 24 hours late last week, says the Canterbury medical officer of health.

Alastair Humphrey is advising anyone with gastroenteritis symptoms to see their GP as they normally would, and if they consumed unboiled water in this general time frame to report this to the doctor.

Symptoms were diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain with or without fever.

Chlorination of the Methven supply was compromised following a power outage at the Methven water plant on Thursday

night, reported to be 7.20pm, and it was not until about 6.45pm the next day that the Ashburton District Council issued a precautionary boil water notice.

Humphrey has highlighted a succession of failures by the council, including the fact the notice on Friday night was precautionary, when it should have been a full boil water notice by that time.

The council did not act on Community and Public Health advice to issue a boil water notice 11.40am on Friday, and could have issued a precautionary notice as early as the power failure was discovered on Friday morning.

The council had since played down the risk, by saying the un-

treated water presented “very little risk”.

“If there is any risk, you protect your community, you have a duty of care,” he said.

In addition the council had not explained the complexities of the notice to the community, such as the necessity to use only boiled water in restaurants for espresso machines and washing salads.

The boil water notice was lifted on Monday following three clear E coli tests, but that did not mean there was not E coli and other gastro bugs present during the time when the supply was compromised.

Such illnesses took time to incubate, and this week would be the crucial period during which

they could present. None had been reported so far, he said yesterday afternoon.

Methven Community Board chairman Dan McLaughlin said the new information from Humphrey raised concerns, and he was yesterday chasing up the council to find out more, and could not comment further until he heard back.

Council assets manager Andrew Guthrie said yesterday in an emailed response that the council had learned from the incident and it was to compile a report.

However, at the same time he seemed to disagree with the medical officer of health about the risk presented by the treatment failure.

Tickets were sold out on opening night of the Ashburton Society of Arts 53rd annual exhibition on Monday.

More than 200 gathered to view the works and awards were presented to winning artists.

Winner of the $2000 Russell Moon and Fail Premier Award was Marcia Scott for her work Global Spending!

It was the third time she had taken out the top prize, the previous two being over the past 20 years.

The mum of two teenagers, who lives in Timaru with her husband

Jeremy, said it had been “amazing” to win.

She had been painting for about 30 years, since her school days, and Global Spending! had been inspired by her love of words.

As well as painting, Scott enjoys working in other fields and does sculpture and furniture making.

Her mother Bev Macaulay of Ashburton was at the awards evening and said her daughter had always been creative and it was not uncommon to have things missing around the house, such as a skirt waistband she once had for sewing.

“And then I would find them in

a painting or a collage,” she said.

Lynda Topp of the Topp Twins announced the awards as the upper class art lover Dilly Ramsbottom, keeping the crowd amused.

Judge Jane Macknight, curator of Forrester Gallery in Oamaru, said she assessed works according to a range of criteria including initial visual impact, technical skill, communicating meaning and originality.

A wide range of awards were presented, including to Mehrdad Tahan for the $1500 Trustpower Water and Nature Award, and John Achten for the $1000 Rosebank Local Award.

Ashburton vet John Achten struck gold with his first artwork in a new medium, at the Ashburton Society of Arts annual exhibition on Monday night.

Having painted mainly in oils and watercolours for the past eight years, Achten tried out the medium of egg tempera recently, and it resulted in him winning the $1000 Rosebank Local Award.

His painting Carmine, of a girl sleeping, found favour with the judge.

Achten said the medium involved mixing powdered pigment with egg yolk. It was then painted on with fine brushes, and each

batch discarded at the end of the day.

And while new for him, the medium actually harked back to early painters, so it was fitting Carmine had turned out to have a classic look.

“I don’t think the classic scene is dead and buried, there’s still a place for it,” Achten said.

Achten lives in Ashburton with wife Delia and is a dad of three boys, two at university and one in his final year of school.

“They are quite artistic in their own right too,” he said.

He works as a vet in Methven four days per week, and enjoys dedicating the rest of his work time to painting.

College takes on recycling scheme

There’s a new set of three Rs coming to the fore at Ashburton College.

Reading, (w)riting and (a)rithmatic and now being complemented by their more modern-day cousins: “reduce, re-use, recycle” and to reinforce the importance of the latter, a new recycling scheme is being rolled out at the school next term.

Envirowaste educator Sheryl Stivens has been working with the school’s environment committee to get the scheme up and running.

Sponsorship of $3700 will mean 30 bright yellow recycle bins will soon be placed around the school, along with labels and promotional material so students are reminded what can be recycled and what must still be placed in rubbish bins.

Stivens, who was at the school yesterday to tell Year 12 and 13 students about the initiative, said the aim was to reduce the amount of material that ended up in the landfill.

“Not only is it a waste of resources, it’s incredibly costly,” she said.

She ran through a list of things that should go into the new recycle bins but stressed that disposable coffee cups and chip pottles were out, as they have a plastic or wax covering that makes them non-recyclable. Polystyrene cups fall into the same category.

All recycling collected at the school will go to the materials recovery facility (merf ) in Timaru, where it will be mechanically sorted and baled, ready to be processed and turned into new products around the world.

Stivens said it was very pleasing to see young people get behind the scheme.

“It’s absolutely brilliant. It’s the old thing – never believe that a single person, group or idea cannot make a change,” she said, referring to the drive behind the initiative was students wanting to take action and do something about the litter they saw.

Hearing delayed by fish screen concerns

The hearing of complex resource consent applications around the construction of a mega water storage lake at Klondyke will be deferred until next year so more work can be done on a multi-million dollar fish screen to deter salmon from entering the Rangitata Diversion Race.

The consents are set down to be heard in October by Environment Canterbury but RDR chief executive Ben Curry said it was more likely the hearing would be in the new year as the irrigation company was still working on the design of a fish screen.

A bio-acoustic fish fence is currently used to keep fish from entering the main canal where the RDR has an offtake from the Rangitata River, but it has not been performing to expectations.

Curry, and representatives from Environment Canterbury and Fish and Game, went on a fact-finding mission to the United States earlier in the year to look at fish screening technology, with the aim of finding a better solution.

The trio spoke to federal and state authorities, as well as private companies. “I wanted to see best practice and they’ve been dealing with the exclusion of salmon for a whole lot longer than we have.”

The RDR is now proposing a positive exclusion screen at its intake with some form of mechanical metal screen to stop fish entering. The location of the screen was important as fish needed to be swept past it rather than become stuck on it.

Curry said keeping the screen clean was also as issue because of the amount of sediment and organic matter in the river.

Overseas fish screens are required to meet design standards.

“It would be fair to say the new fish screen, whichever design we go for, will be reasonably expensive. It is hard trying to keep pretty small fingerlings out of the irrigation canal.”

Curry said it would potentially be one of the largest dams of its type in Australasia so it was important to get the infrastructure right and address concerns along the way.

Finding investors for the project would be the next challenge.

The pond could potentially cover 200 hectares and hold 53 million cubic metres of water, stored when the Rangitata River flows exceed predetermined levels.

A whitewater kayak course could also be included on the outflow of the pond.

An early price tag for the project was $260m, though it would be built based on demand for the water it would store.

New administration for historic Methven Road Board building

Methven’s oldest building is to come under the administration of the Methven Community Board.

The small weatherboard Mt Hutt Road Board building on Main Street was built in 1879.

Ashburton District Council commercial manager Colin Windleborn told board members at their meeting on Monday that a trust looked after the building, but with very few members today a new option needed to be considered.

He suggested the council be responsible for repairs and maintenance, and the board administer it.

This was accepted unanimously by board members.

The building is currently used by the

town’s library while a new library is being built, and it has been used in the past by SeniorNet and a pipe band.

Methven’s Unto the Hills history book records the building’s early days.

The road board was established in pioneering times to ensure quality roads were built.

“A pound keeper was appointed and paid 25 pounds per annum for his services which involved the gathering of stray stock, which the owners could recover on payment of a fee,” the book says. But then farmers complained about the fees and the pound keeper was replaced by an overseer instead.

“Maintenance and construction of new roads kept the board busy throughout the 1880s and steady progress resulted in the major roads being laid out.”

Cannabis bill yet to be debated The government hasn’t yet decided whether it will support Green Party MP Julie Anne Genter’s bill to legalise cannabis for seriously ill and dying people.

The bill was drawn from the members’ ballot last month and is on parliament’s order paper for a first reading, but it’s well down the list and probably won’t come up before the September election.

Prime Minister Bill English was asked about the government’s position yesterday, and said National’s caucus was still discussing the bill.

“We’ve had some discussion but we haven’t finalised all the issues,” he said.

“It’s really the issue of how the rules work and whether the bill amounts to decriminalisation or not.”

Also still to be decided is whether National will treat the bill as a conscience vote, or take a position on it as a party.

“Generally we have a party vote, we will discuss it in caucus,” English said.

Genter wants the drug, or any products that may be derived from it, legal for people with a terminal illness or a seriously debilitating condition.

They would have to have the support of a registered medical practitioner.

“No Kiwi should have to live in pain because of an archaic, uncompassionate law,” she said

The explosion that ripped a central Auckland house apart in the early hours of yesterday has been linked to a gas leak – potentially ignited when an occupant turned on the lights.

At midday fire investigators were only just entering the property, six hours after it exploded into flames.

The man and a woman living inside managed to escape with moderate to serious burns. They have been taken to hospital.

Avondale senior station officer Chris Power told NZME that the investigation is ongoing.

Power expected fire investigators would finish the inspection this afternoon.

The house has been levelled after a loud explosion rocked New Windsor just after 6am yesterday.

Little is left of the house after the massive explosion yesterday morning.

One of the walls can be seen crushed up against neighbouring property a few metres away from where it once stood.

Big change for Barnett after 26 years at More FM

S

ometimes, the timing is just right and for popular former local, Simon Barnett, that time is now.

The disc jock sent shockwaves up and down the country yesterday when it was announced that he would be leaving his regular slot on the More FM morning show and taking up a role within rival company, Newstalk ZB. For 26 years thousands of New Zealanders, particularly those from the Canterbury region, have enjoyed Barnett’s dulcet tones in the morning on their annual pilgrimage to the workplace or as they potter around at home.

But after close to three decades of doing the same thing over and over again, he’s decided enough is enough.

And good on him too.

After being so successful, for such a long period of time it can’t have been an easy decision to change things up.

Not so much changing roles, but particularly changing companies.

Barnett has been the face of More FM for longer than most of us would care to remember.

It’s been his voice we’ve associated with the channel. And it’s been his delivery style and passion that has helped give the station a rise in popularity over an extended period of time.

The shift to Newstalk ZB will bring a new version of the now jovial and almost joking type of Barnett than we are used to.

A more traditionally straight station which tends to tackle the harder issues constantly, Barnett will have to adapt himself into a new version of himself and his success will be a measure of just how he handles that change.

He also joins a whole new stable of hosts. His right-hand man, Gary McCormick won’t be there for familiarity. Phil Gifford is nowhere to be seen either. So, it’s Si on his own, but not quite yet.

Yesterday’s announcement included the fact that he would remain with More FM until the end of 2018 before taking up his new role.

That should give enough time for his current employers to sort out a decent farewell.

ouncillor Stuart Wilson’s thought that local authorities have no role to play in deciding whether the community should consume sugar-laden drinks is getting plenty of agreement from within the community.

t our full council meeting last week, we adopted the annual plan for the 2017/18 year and our district’s required rate rises for the upcoming financial year.

Pleasingly the rate rises were less than originally projected to fund the council’s work programme.

Overall, the amount of money required from rates will increase by 6.57 per cent, considerably less than the 11 per cent increase set out in the 2015/25 Long Term Plan.

Much of this saving can be attributed to a much better deal being reached for our new kerbside collection service than previously anticipated.

As you all undoubtedly know, rates are one of the council’s key revenue streams and help to fund everything from footpaths and solid waste management, to district water management, cemeteries and local civil defence.

Most of these services are business-as-usual activities that only come to our attention when something changes or needs work.

Our 2017 Annual Residents Survey has strongly indicated that Ashburton residents are very happy with the services they receive from their council.

The annual plan is council’s commitment to continuing to deliver at this high level to support the Ashburton community.

Our overarching goal is always to make the Ashburton District a great place to live and do business.

Some of you may be wondering why there was no formal community consultation on this year’s annual plan.

This happens when there are no substantial changes to be made to an annual plan. The extended kerbside collection service, to include properties not already receiving a council service, was consulted on separately as part of the revenue and finance policy. This was also adopted yesterday.

If you’d like to read the 2017/18 Annual Plan for our district, you will find it on the council’s website www.adc.govt.nz or you can pick up a printed copy from the council office.

The next step in the council’s planning processes will be to begin drafting the 2018-28 Long Term Plan, which will be adopted

Missile hits Japanese seas North Korea yesterday launched yet another ballistic missile in the direction of Japan, South Korean officials said, part of a string of recent test-firings as the North works to build a nuclear-tipped missile that could reach the United States.

The South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that the launch, which came before the US celebration of its national independence, was made from North Phyongan province. Other details were scarce. It wasn’t immediately clear if this was a routine firing of a short-range missile or an attempt to perfect North Korea’s longer-range missiles.

Since taking office on May 10, Moon has tried to improve strained ties with North Korea, but the North has continued its missile tests.

Pyongyang says it needs nuclear weapons and powerful missiles to cope with what it calls rising US military threats.

Samsung to recycle Note 7s

Huge oil deal signed

Samsung Electronics plans to recycle and sell its recalled Galaxy Note 7 phones starting this week in South Korea, salvaging their unused parts.

The Galaxy Note FE phone will go on sale in South Korea on Friday at 700,000 won, about three quarters of its original price, the company said.

Samsung said the Note FE has “perfect safety” – unlike the recalled versions that were found to be prone to overheating and catching fire.

The supply will be limited to 400,000 units. Overseas sales plans will be determined later.

The original Note 7 was one of the biggest black eyes in Samsung’s history. When it was launched in August 2016, the Note 7 was Samsung’s answer to Apple’s upcoming iPhone. It was also one of the most expensive Samsung phones.

After reports emerged that its batteries were prone to overheat and catch fire, Samsung recalled the phone in less than a month of its launch and released another one with replaced batteries.

Iran has signed a $US5 billion agreement with France’s Total and a Chinese oil company to develop its massive offshore natural gas field, the first such deal with foreign companies since the landmark 2015 nuclear deal.

Officials in Tehran signed the agreement, which will see the firms develop a portion of the massive South Pars offshore field that Iran shares with Qatar.

Total has a 50.1 per cent share in the deal. The stateowned China National Petroleum Corp has 30 per cent stake and Iran’s Petropars has 19.9 per cent.

Officials anticipate the deal will see gas production increase to nearly 600 million cubic metres from the current 540 million cubic metres.

During the ceremony, Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh congratulated all involved in the deal.

“People are not planning weekly meals in the way they were a few years ago. We’ve got busy with traffic and duel working households. So we have to adapt,” Bayliss said.

“Dining out, home delivery and takeaways is growing three times as fast as grocery sales,” Bayliss said, emphasising the need for his business to respond to those changes.

Chris Quin, Foodstuffs North Island chief executive, said: “The store joined the Foodstuffs North Island co-operative in May and has been operating under a temporary New World banner since then.”

The store has a new look, new layout and new product offerings, he said.

An in-house barista, made-onthe-spot smoothies, sushi, meal kits for dinners and meat from an in-house butcher were on offer at the new store, he said.

But everyday, food-focused topup grocery needs were also still being stocked.

“For some time now, we’ve been analysing what we offer our urban customers.

“We wanted to give them a smaller grocery experience that answers that question of ‘what will we eat tonight’ with plenty of fresh produce and take-home meal solutions,” Quin said.

“The store has fresh food at its

heart, with an extensive deli counter, a full specialty cheese range and an extensive range of fresh fruit and vegetables. It brings the best of what New World offers to a small, local store,” he said.

Urban customers pop in several times a week for different reasons, he said, so Fresh Collective aimed to satisfy that style of demand.

“Sometimes they’re just looking for a coffee or lunch, but might grab a couple of grocery items at the same time.

“Sometimes they’re looking for a handy meal solution for tonight’s dinner.

“Whatever their reason for shopping, they want the experience to be warm, inviting and full of the delightful sights and smells you get in a beautiful fresh food market,” Quin said.

“We’ve been working on this concept for some time.

“We created a prototype of what a Fresh Collective experience would look like, which allowed everyone involved to walk around inside it and comment on the design and customer flow.

“That was a first for us, and we found it a really useful, creative part of the process. To be able to pick up the deli counter and move it to another position, or make an aisle a little wider, was really helpful.”

The next Fresh Collective will be at Mt Albert’s Four Square and is due to open later next month.

Countdown fighting back Supermarket giant Countdown said it is continuing to invest in its stores as rival Foodstuffs launches a new retail chain in Auckland.

Fresh Collective by New World opened yesterday on Constellation Drive after a brief stint as a New World, and at Nosh before that.

Asked for an update on Countdown’s expansion plans, a spokeswoman said: “Over the last year Countdown has opened five new supermarkets around the country and refurbished seven of our stores.

“This year we’re continuing our focus to invest in our store network to make sure we have the best supermarket offer in the right places for our customer.”

Phil Mead, involved with the North Shore store at under all three brands, said the premises had undergone significant changes.

Mead is now the owner/operator of Auckland’s first Fresh Collective, a new brand started by Foodstuffs North Island whose other brands include Pakn’Save.

In changing from New World to Fresh Collective, Mead said extra checkouts were added, staff numbers rose from 18 to 29 and more of an emphasis was on read-to-go and fresh produce.

“What doesn’t break you makes you stronger,” Mead said of his time with all three brands.

The store drew about 600 people/day as a New World but he is expecting more as a Fresh Collective.

Steve Bayliss, Foodstuffs North Island’s group general manager, showed off new LED lighting, new signage and how a front wall facing Constellation Dr had been demolished to allow more natural light into the store.

Costs for the store upgrade were shared between Foodstuffs and owner/operators, Bayliss said.

Z Energy shares dropped 3.6 per cent yesterday after a government-commissioned report into fuel prices found areas of concern in petrol pricing.

In a statement released to the NZX, Wellington-based Z Energy said it had removed its main port fuel price (MPP) from its website, one of the recommendations made by the study.

The company said it has offered to provide the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment with more data including daily pricing data.

The shares fell 28 cents to $7.61 in the first hour of trading yesterday, having gained 8.7 per cent this year.

The studyfound New Zealand’s fuel market “may not be consist-

ent with a workably competitive market” with retail margins increasing over the past five years while more expensive petrol in the South Island and Wellington aren’t explained by higher costs in those areas.

The study couldn’t conclude that prices are reasonable, and the authors said they had reason to believe they might not be.

The report found retail gross margins on fuel have increased significantly over the period under review, between 2013 and 2017.

Fuel companies make the highest margins in Wellington, at around 31 cents per litre, with South Island margins about 30 cents per litre and North Island margins about 21 cents per litre.

Time to get the cauli out ...

lightly browned.

■ Add the potatoes then the ground spices and salt. Cover and cook for 5 or 6 minutes, stirring occasionally.

■ Reduce heat to low, add cauliflower, cover and simmer until potatoes and cauliflower are tender, about 12 minutes.

hile cauliflower prices went through the roof earlier this year, they have settled back down.

Now is a good time to make the most of this delicious, versatile vegetable.

Spicy cauliflower and chickpea salad 1 cauliflower 1t cumin seeds 1t coriander seeds 1/2 t cayenne pepper 1/2 t ground turmeric 1/2 t ground ginger 1/2 t garam masala 1/2 t salt 1 tin chickpeas, drained 3-4T olive oil (for roasting) 3 handfuls of baby spinach, washed, drained and roughly chopped 1/2 C unsweetened yoghurt Juice of one lemon 1/2 t dijon mustard 1T extra virgin olive oil (for dressing) Salt and pepper ■ Heat the oven to 220°C. ■ Place all the spices in a small bowl and stir well.

■ Wash and dry the cauliflower, then sit it on a chopping board, stem end down. Cut into 1cm slices discarding any large chunks of stem (save for soup).

Don’t worry if some pieces of cauliflower break up.

■ Place cauliflower into a large bowl, tip in the chickpeas, spice mix and olive oil and massage into cauliflower and chickpeas.

■ Tip into a large roasting dish and put in the oven for 20-30 minutes, until the cauliflower is tender, but still crisp. Leave to cool.

■ Combine yoghurt, lemon juice, mustard, oil and salt and pepper.

Cauliflower cheese bake 1 medium sized cauliflower, broken into large florets 60g butter 60g plain flour 450ml milk Salt and pepper to taste 100g tasty cheddar cheese, grated

■ Place spinach in a salad bowl, tip the cauliflower and chickpeas on top, then drizzle the yoghurt dressing on top.

Garlicky roasted cauliflower 1 large cauliflower, broken into florets 4-5 crushed garlic cloves 2T olive oil 1/2 C parmesan cheese, grated Salt and black pepper to taste ■ Preheat the oven to 220°C. Grease a large casserole dish.

■ Place the olive oil, garlic and cauliflower in the casserole dish and mix well.

■ Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes, stirring halfway through. Top with parmesan cheese and grill for 3 to 5 minutes, until golden brown.

Cauliflower soup with gruyere cheese 1/2 large head of cauliflower, roughly chopped 1T olive oil 1 small leek (white part only) roughly chopped 1 medium brown onion, peeled and chopped 3C chicken or vegetable stock 1/2 t dried thyme 1/2 t ground cumin Salt and pepper to season 3/4 C grated gruyère cheese ■ Heat oil in a large, heavy saucepan over medium heat. Sauté leek and onion for about 5 minutes until softened.

■ Add stock, cauliflower, thyme and cumin. Simmer, uncovered, for about 30 minutes until cauliflower is tender.

■ Season with salt and pepper to taste. Ladle soup into individual

bowls and sprinkle cheese over each serving.

Cauliflower and potato curry (gobi aloo) 1/2 cauliflower, broken into florets 2 large potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes 1T vegetable oil 1t cumin seeds 2-3 cloves of garlic, crushed 1t fresh ginger, grated 1/2 t ground turmeric 1/2 t paprika 1/2 t chilli powder 1t ground cumin 1/2 t garam masala Salt to taste 1T fresh coriander, chopped

■ Preheat the oven to 220°C. ■ Place in a large pot, add enough water to cover the thick stalk and boil for 8 to 10 minutes. Drain.

■ Melt the butter over a low heat in a small saucepan and add the flour. Using a wooden spoon to mix them together. The mixture should pull away from the sides of the pot and changes texture.

■ Warm the milk and add to the flour and butter mixture slowly, stirring continuously. When the mixture has started to thicken, then add more milk but keep stirring.

■ Continue to do this until the sauce has thickened but is still pourable. Add the half the grated cheese and stir well. Season with salt and black pepper.

■ Place the drained cauliflower in an oven-proof dish. Pour the cheese sauce over the cauliflower, making sure you cover all of it. Sprinkle over the rest of the cheese. Bake in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until the top is golden brown.

Chicken and asparagus risotto Serves 5 Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Breast 3 1/2 C salt-reduced chicken stock 400 Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Breast, cut into cubes 1T olive oil 10g butter 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 celery stalk, chopped 1 1/2 C arborio rice 1/2 C dry white wine 1 bunch asparagus, cut into pieces 2T chopped parsley 1/4 C finely grated parmesan ■ Place the stock into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Turn the heat to very low so the stock stays hot.

■ Heat the olive oil and butter in a medium sized saucepan. Add the Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Breast and brown over medium heat. Remove the chicken and set aside.

■ Add the onion, garlic and celery to the pan and cook over low heat for 5 minutes. Add the rice and cook, stirring, over medium heat for 1 minute. Add the wine and cook for a further 2 to 3 minutes, stirring, until the wine has evaporated.

■ Add a ladle of hot stock. Reduce the heat to low and stir constantly, adding a ladle full of hot stock at a time as the liquid is absorbed. After 15 to 20 minutes, taste the rice to check

■ Meanwhile, bring a medium saucepan of lightly salted water to the boil. Add the asparagus, bring to the boil and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until tender. Drain.

■ Once the rice is cooked, add the chicken and asparagus and cook for a further 3 to 4 minutes or until the chicken is heated through. Add extra stock as necessary.

■ Remove the risotto from the heat and stir in the parsley and parmesan. Cover and stand for 2 minutes for the flavours to infuse. Serve immediately with extra vegetables or a green leafy salad.

Langman rules out Ferns

By Daniel Gilhooly Laura Langman has ruled herself out of Silver Ferns contention again next year after agreeing to terms with Australian champion club the Sunshine Coast Lightning.

The Australian franchise have won the on-going tug of war battle with Netball New Zealand over Langman’s signature, with the midcourter deciding to resign with the Lightning for another year.

World-class centre Langman will be unavailable for the Commonwealth Games campaign as, under Netball New Zealand rules, she must play at home to be eligible for selection, a serious blow for Silver Ferns coach Janine Southby.

Langman recently helped the Sunshine Coast Lightning to their maiden title in the inaugural Australian domestic netball competition.

The Lightning have retained the same 10-strong player squad for next year, along with their New Zealand coach Noeline Taurua.

Langman, 31, needs to add five tests to her 141 caps to become the most capped Silver Fern in history.

Her decision once again stymies that prospect and casts doubt over her longer-term international future.

Langman was named in the inaugurual Australian competition’s team of the year, along with their captain Geva Mentor, the English defender who was named player of the year.

Star goal shooter Caitlin Bassett has also returned for the Lightning.

Taurua was delighted to confirm her entire team had been retained.

“We have players returning who were part of establishing this club and its values and that’s massive,” Taurua said.

“Those 10 athletes have the same mindset which is the intention to get better and build upon what we created.”

The next Super Netball season will begin in April 2018, after the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast that month.

Tiger out of rehab Tiger Woods says he’s checked out of the clinic where he went to get help dealing with pain medications, saying he will “continue to tackle this going forward.” The treatment follows the golfer’s arrest on a drug driving charge after he was found asleep at the wheel in Florida on May 29. Bowlers chasing top honours Ashburton indoor bowlers Grant Wilson and Chris Talbot will shoot for national glory later this season.

The pair have won their way through to the national final of the New Zealand Mixed Fours where they will take on other zone winners from around the country in a winner takes all,

round robin competition.

Wilson and Talbot travelled to Christchurch at the weekend to compete in the zone playoff against mixed pairs from Canterbury, South Canterbury and North Otago at the Canterbury Indoor Bowls Stadium on Kearney’s Road.

The duo did things the easy

way by winning all three of their matches to win the round robin competition outright.

They then returned on Sunday along with Graeme Chapman and Rowena MacKenzie to try and emulate their effort 24 hours earlier in the same zone playoff, but this time for the New Zealand Mixed Fours.

They started the day strongly, beating North Otago comfortably but lost their next match to eventual winners, South Canterbury, before dropping their final match against Canterbury as well.

Wilson and Talbot will head to the national final of the mixed pairs which is being held at Upper Hutt in September.

The clock is ticking on the McLaren/ Honda Formula 1 partnership. A decision on the future of McLaren’s engine-supplier is imminent with Honda desperately trying to make some break-through on making their power unit more competitive so the combination will continue together next year.

McLaren Executive Director Zak Brown admitted that decision time is looming and he plans on evaluating the next few races before making a final call. McLaren, the second-most successful Formula 1 team in history, has been a long way off the pace being set by rivals Mercedes and Ferrari this year.

Kicking ‘not a problem’

By GreGor Paul The Lions would love to believe that the All Blacks have a problem with their goalkicking.

They would love to think that Beauden Barrett is coming to Eden Park a bag of nerves, plagued by demons and ready to shut his eyes, hoof it and hope.

Is he jittery?

Is he likely, with such high stakes, to let nerves sweep through him and spray the ball anywhere but where he meant it to go?

A few New Zealanders will have their doubts, too, about Barrett’s goalkicking after he missed three from eight in Wellington, two of which had a relatively low difficulty factor even in treacherous conditions.

But no one in the All Blacks camp is worried. They have every faith in Barrett and why wouldn’t they?

In the first test he was 100 per

cent – striking the ball magnificently and knocking them over from tight spots.

He can do it. He can kick well under pressure.

Barrett is not a bad goal kicker, but perception is locking in to the contrary.

It may be because he hasn’t kicked regularly in Super Rugby this year.

It’s probably got something to do with the fact he had a few tests last year where he missed a few he really shouldn’t have.

Kiwis love to fret, so in the absence of genuine competition, it became proper sport to hypothesise that one day goal kicking would cost the All Blacks.

Barrett it seems, for all his brilliance, can’t or won’t be fully celebrated until he can find a way to convince the masses he can be trusted to knock the ball between the sticks.

Dan Carter built a reputation as being unflappable as a goal

kicker. His legend was founded on his consistency, accuracy and, whether it was justified or not, proven record to kick well under pressure.

Carter won the All Blacks big games with his boot and Barrett probably needs a breakthrough test where he does the same.

An iconic game where he nails the victory by holding his nerve from the touchline is what he needs to change popular thinking because the reality as it stands is not being widely absorbed.

According to the statistics from the test series so far, Barrett is the best goal kicker involved.

The Lions pin-pointed the All Blacks’ goalkicking as a potential weakness before the tour and highlighted their own as a strength.

Yet after two tests, Barrett’s success ratio in the series is 81 per cent – which is the mythical, aspirational figure all good, regular kickers aim for.

If they can knock over 80 per cent of their kicks per game, they go home happy.

In contrast, Owen Farrell’s success rate on this tour has been 71 per cent. The Lions midfielder couldn’t convert Taulupe Faletau’s try from the far touchline, andwasn’t able to convert Sean O’Brien’s try in the first test either and given that he pulled wide a reasonably simple penalty against the Highlanders at a critical stage in the game, there is more reason to question the temperament and ability of Farrell as a goal kicker than there is Barrett’s.

“I’m not worried about his goalkicking at all,” said All Blacks coach Steve Hansen about Barrett. “Games are won and lost with goalkicking – but they are also won by players doing a job from one to 23. And tonight the Lions did their job better than we did. He kicked 100 per cent last time out, so no, I’m not concerned.”

Gatland has tough choice with ‘loose cannon’ One of Warren Gatland’s biggest decisions this week before what must rank as the most important test of his career is what to do about Mako Vunipola.

The 26-year-old, a son of Tonga international Fe’ao, was born in Wellington, raised in Wales and represents England, and is one of

the most talented players among Gatland’s front rowers.

Vunipola is one of those rare beasts as a prop in the Northern Hemisphere in that he can run, pass and step off either foot. He’s powerful and quick too, and possesses a freakish ability to keep going for close to 80 minutes.

The problem is that he is also approaching loose cannon territory and, while reference to the Lions’ discipline was made by assistant coach Graham Rowntree a day after the visitors’ triumph, a failure to regain control of one of his heaviest pieces of artillery could be extremely costly for the Lions.

While Rowntree refused to single anyone out, it was as if he was in fact targeting someone in particular.

“We can’t lose a test series on the back of some stupid penalties. That would be unacceptable.

How would you live with that for the rest of your life?”

Johnny Sexton is one of a very few rugby players who have enjoyed two victories against the world champions. The second of course was in Wellington last weekend when he combined so brilliantly with his No12 Owen Farrell to contain and then expose the All Blacks in the Lions’ 24-21 victory.

The first was last November in Chicago when he orchestrated Ireland’s famous victory over the All Blacks which put a stop to their 18-test winning run. It was a thoroughly deserved win, too, one with daring and skill – a bit like the Lions’ triumph at Westpac Stadium.

Woodward said the Lions must reduce their penalty count or lose the series. But the tourists have already got a head start thanks to the presence of Poite according to Woodward, the former Lions and World Cup winning England coach.

The Lions’ familiarity with the northern hemisphere whistler was the important factor on Saturday, Woodward said.

As a result, only Anton LienertBrown and Ngani Laumape remain available out of the midfielders selected in the original squad. Former England and Lions legend Brian Moore has weighed in on the debate, suggesting that the combination of Lienert-Brown and Malaki Fekitoa is the best possible one for the All Blacks, as he expressed the importance of both experience over youth, as well as the variation in ability and game plan that stems from a team’s midfield.

Confidence in late bloomer Perseverance with the well-related Nordic Hero is being rewarded after the half-brother by Fastnet Rock to the Gr.1 Cox Plate winner Ocean Park showed no early signs of living up to his pedigree.

“He didn’t do much at all at the trials and it just shows you have to press on and give each horse his chance,” trainer Stephen Marsh said.

“His first up run was quite good and he’s just kept improving since then.”

While Nordic Hero is of illustrious parentage, his only focus is on the race track.

“He got very heavy so it was decided very early on to geld him.

“He’s owned in Hong Kong and that didn’t worry them.”

Nordic Hero was a debut fourth at Hawera in May before he won a mile maiden on a heavy track at Pukekohe Park last month.

“He just loves the mud, the wetter the better and I think he’s going to be a pretty handy horse over ground next winter.”

In the meantime, there is plenty of confidence in the three-year-old making his presence felt in the Hi Tech Floor Scrubbers Handicap at Matamata today.

“I can’t see any reason why he can’t continue on his winning way,” Marsh said.

A decision to be patient back in October looks like it’s going to pay big dividends for Leo O’Reilly.

The Rakaia horseman could have easily been forgiven for getting a little excited 10 months ago by the prospect of the exciting pacer James Dean, but he knew full well back then that what the son of Santanna Blue Chip was showing was just the tip of the iceberg and better things were in store down the track.

So, when he bolted in against a good field on the grass at Methven and then ran third behind a couple of smart types at Kaikoura, O’Reilly made the decision to turn James Dean out to the pad-

dock rather than chase the threeyear-old riches.

“He’s always been pretty smart in my opinion,” O’Reilly said.

“And I always thought that time was going to be really good for him and that’s why we went for the break when we did with him.”

With a record now of three wins and four placings in his five career starts, there are only positive signs ahead and if Sunday’s win at Timaru is anything to go by then O’Reilly can start getting really excited.

Despite being a three-year-old taking on the older horses, James Dean raced like a hardened stayer as he ran his rivals into the dirt over the 2600 metres.

“I was a bit worried when we

had Donegal Carrickfin sitting up outside up because he’s such a good stayer, but to my guy’s credit he just kept fighting and was pretty impressive.

“We need to pick and choose our battles with him a bit now, but a race like the Rangiora Winter Cup looks a good option, as does the Kurow Cup. “And he should still get better because he hasn’t really done a lot when you look at it.”

A half-brother to the wellperformed pacers Alexis, Jackaroozy and Alex, who all did good jobs here before heading off to Australia, O’Reilly has a halfbrother by Bettor’s Delight at home too who he is currently breaking in.

With eight horses in work,

O’Reilly’s race team is limited to James Dean and former pacer Jerry Garcia, who is starting to get the hang of the trotting game now.

“He’s going great I reckon.

“For six years all he has ever done is pace and now in six months we are asking him to trot and it’s taking a bit of time to get him sorted.

“But each time he races, he gets a bit better.

“I think he will win a few races trotting.”

He’ll have to do a pretty big job to catch up to James Dean though, with O’Reilly a big fan of the horse.

“He makes getting out of bed in the mornings a little easier, that’s for sure.”

Champion driver Dexter Dunn has answered a call-up to drive last-start Group One winner My Field Marshal in next Saturday night’s Sunshine Sprint at Albion Park. The drives on My Field Marshal and Australia’s best pacer Lennytheshark became available because of a date clash with the huge Vicbred Grand Final night meeting at Melton. Anthony Butt and Chris Alford had strong commitments keeping them at Melton.

High expectations Gary Moore believes his latest newcomer will eventually rival the current juvenile star of his stable, even though All Too Huiying is yet to win a race. The Rosehill trainer introduces Auchentoman to racing at the Canterbury midweek meeting and has high hopes after the twoyear-old won both his trials. “From what he’s shown I guess he’s up with the better two-year-olds I have under my care, except for a horse like All Too Huiying,” he said.

Higher honours await progressive 3YO Lisa Latta isn’t anticipating Almo Street having any trouble making his way through the grades.

“He’s a really nice horse with plenty of ability,” the Awapuni trainer said.

Almo Street collected a win and a placing in four starts during his initial preparation through the spring and summer and at Hastings on Saturday he made an impressive return to racing.

The Alamosa three-year-old was a clear last out of the gates, but recovered well under a nopanic ride from Jonathan Riddell to account for the R65 sprinters.

Fraser Auret is relaxed about Aide Memoire chasing back to back Group One wins some eight months apart. The Marton trainer has the lightly-raced five-year-old back in work after a lengthy spell following her breakthrough success at the top level in the Captain Cook Stakes last December. “She did jar up after the race, not too bad but just a bit scratchy,” he said. “We decided to tip her out and give her a really good break. She did about six weeks on the water walker and she’s been back in the stable for a while now. She’s doing well, I’m quite thrilled with her.”

“I was a bit worried about him earlier in the day when it started drizzling, but he was really good once he got out into the better part of the racetrack,” Latta said.

She has no immediate plans for Almo Street, who is raced by breeders and long-time stable clients Bill Gleeson, of Wellfield Lodge, and John Street, of Lincoln Farms.

“We’ll just look after him and there will be races for him at the Hawke’s Bay spring carnival,” she said.

Meanwhile, Almo Street’s talented stablemate Five To Midnight has begun his build-up

toward one of the spring’s feature events.

“We’ll only be looking at the last day, the Livamol Classic, at Hastings with him and he’ll probably run in the Merial Mile before that,” Latta said.

Five To Midnight hasn’t raced since he produced a dominant performance to win the Listed Hawke’s Bay Gold Cup. The rising five-year-old had previously placed in the Gr.2 Awapuni Gold Cup and at Group Three level in both the City of Auckland and Manawatu Cups.

Sport Durant takes pay cut One day shy of a year after announcing his decision to join the powerful Golden State Warriors, Kevin Durant has accepted a major pay cut to help make sure they stay winners and chase more championships. Durant wants to build a dynasty alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, agreeing to terms yesterday on a contract worth approximately $US53 million over the next two years, according to confidential sources. The deal is worth about $25 million in the first year with a player option for the second season.

Mid Canterbury have picked up their first win of the season after a hard-fought 24-20 result against Ellesmere at the Kirwee Showgrounds yesterday.

The pre-season run-out was a chance for the performers of the Combined Competition and Watters Cup round to prove themselves at the next level.

The match started in an even fashion, with neither side able to make any gains into the opposition 22.

Mid Canterbury were the first side to have a crack at goal, with fullback Jarred Percival unable to put enough oomph behind a penalty at around the 10-minute mark.

Unable to make any headway into the Hammers’ defence, Ellesmere decided teeing up a penalty not long after could provide an opportunity to get on the scoreboard. This proved

a smart decision, with first-five Shannon Donald able to knock it over from nearly halfway.

At around the 25-minute mark, hooker Jackson Donlan celebrated his first-time captaining Mid Canterbury, with a well-deserved try from a rolling maul formed from a 5m lineout.

Percival was not going to make the same mistake twice and duly converted the try to give Mid Canterbury a 7-3 lead.

A period of strong, last-ditch defending from Mid Canterbury kept Ellesmere off the scoreboard until a pass was intercepted in the Ellesmere half.

They countered quickly until they were stopped not far out underneath the posts. The hosts were able to win a penalty, which Donald was able to convert.

Right before halftime, Mid Canterbury were awarded a penalty from the scrum, allowing Percival to extend Mid Canterbury’s lead to four at halftime.

Mid Canterbury began the second half with a bang, with a brilliant kick and chase from winger Isireli Masiwini opening the Ellesmere defence, allowing some sharp passing from the Hammers to allow Seta Koroitamana to score the try.

Substitute Jason Kjestrup took over the kicking duties in the second half and converted the try.

From that point, Ellesmere put the pressure on Mid Canterbury, which paid off for the hosts, with Thomas Turner capitalising to score his first try. Tim Murgatroyd had the second half kicking honours for Ellesmere, and converted.

Mid Canterbury answered quickly, however, with Masiwini able to break off the back of a ruck for a clean run home, with Kjestrum safely converting.

With time and light fading, all the pressure was on Ellesmere to recover from being 13-24 down.

They kept the pressure on Mid Canterbury, taking advantage of a strong scrum to keep the Hammers on their toes.

Ellesmere were able to notch up one more try before the final whistle, with Turner dotting down for a double.

Murgatroyd converted, leaving the final score at 20-24 to Mid Canterbury.

Mid Canterbury will wait for the Watters Cup to wrap up before taking to the paddock again, with their second pre-season run-out of the season against Southland on July 29.

Then it will be pressure on the Hammers, with their Ranfurly Shield Challenge against Canterbury on August 4.

Former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry has endorsed home tests for the perennially-touring British and Irish Lions – and backed Warren Gatland as a future New Zealand coaching candidate.
