STORY, RESULTS

Jail time for drink driving ‘menace’ A 61-year-old builder has been sent to jail for six months for recidivist drink driving offences spanning decades. John Wilson McBride appeared before Judge A. J. Roberts in the Ashburton District Court yesterday for sentencing on his seventh count of drink driving. McBride was stopped by police on Cass Street late on the evening of April 6. He returned an evidential breath alcohol test result of 727 micrograms per litre of breath (727mcg/l), almost double the baseline, Judge Roberts said. He referred to McBride’s extensive history of drink driving and listed several high readings including two above 1000mcg/l. “This is the seventh conviction of a like nature,” Judge Roberts said.

Today you are going to jail.” Judge Roberts said he was not attempting to impose abstinence on McBride. “You are perfectly at liberty to tip as much down your throat as you like and as often as you wish, but do not drink-drive again.” In addition to the prison sentence Judge Roberts disqualified McBride from driving indefinitely. If and when his licence is returned he must obtain and use a zero-alcohol licence for three years. He will also be subject to special release conditions which include counselling as directed for six months upon his release.
